tribute to a friend
In a fitting tribute to their mentor, balloonists Alex Jonard and Ted Watts decided to inflate their balloons on Friday evening to the delight of the crowd. Jonard inflated his brand new balloon “Cra-Zee” (above right) for the very first time while Watts inflated his new “The Legal Eagle” for only the third time. Both men had a special black “Z” built into the canopy of their hot air balloon in memory of long-time hot air balloonist, Bob “Professor Z” Zanella. Article on page 2. Beacon photo by Mark fortune

30th annual Hot Air Balloon Festival, presented by Frontier Power, the crowd delighted with a beautiful Saturday evening launch as colorful balloons filled the skies over Coshocton. With free entertainment ranging from Coshocton’s own Timothy Paul on Friday evening to Phil Dirt & The Dozers on Saturday evening, people came from cities all over central Ohio to catch a glimpse of a balloon rising on air. The event is now the oldest hot air balloon festival in Ohio and a special proclamation was delivered by the state of Ohio at the Friday evening pilots briefing. This year’s event was dedicated to the memory of long time balloon enthusiast Bob “Professor Z” Zanella, who passed away in December from a short illness. Balloon pilots Alex Jonard and Ted Watts both give Zanella credit for their balloon passion and in his memory and honor, boast a “Z” in the canopy of their brand new balloons, or in balloon parlance, “envelopes”. More than one tear was shed at the balloon pilots briefing as the pilots remembered Zanella, many of whom owe their passion for the sport to him. A hearty round of applause greeted event presenter Frontier Power representative Steve Nelson as he was introduced at the briefing.

pilots “The Legal Eagle”, sponsored this year by Clow Water Systems, said, “Coshocton is one of the first balloon competitions I ever came to and I’m always happy to be here.” Asked about the “Z” in the canopy, Watts said, “I met Bob in 1988 when he came to Meadville, (PA) to help us put on a balloon rally and through the years he taught me how to fly. He taught me everything I know about ballooning and Meadville owes him a great debt of gratitude as do I. Through the course of time he became a very close friend. In my opinion Bob epitomizes hot air ballooning and he is, probably, in my estimation is one of the men that’s responsible for the entire state of Ohio being saturated with hot air balloonists. I think it all started with Bob Z. This represents a great debt of gratitude to him but also in honor of the loss of a great friend.” Alex Jonard, who inflated a balloon designed by his son Nick for the very first time Friday evening, said, “We just got it off the freight truck yesterday afternoon. We live in Chicago and brought it over this morning. When Ted Watts and I decided to get new envelopes this past winter, we had a black “Z” put on the canopy. We wanted to remember Bob and have him flying and looking over our shoulder with us. “As far as the design goes, I turned Nick loose with some crayolas and some patterns we had, it’s designed after digital camo. He likes digital camo and Army so it should look like digital camo, except it’s orange, blue and yellow. We’re real anxious to see it tonight.” Nick said about the design, “Because I like digital camo, I have some digital camo shirts, so I used our old balloon colors and put them in a digital camo design. I’m looking forward to seeing it launch.” With arms around each other, Jonard and his wife watched as the new “CraZee” inflated for the first time. The Cra-Zee balloon was sponsored by Coshocton Tribune Media.

The 3rd Annual Dr. Mike McPeak Memorial Golf Outing will be Saturday, June 25 at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette. “This is an excellent opportunity for all friends, colleagues, patients, and others to join together out on the green for a great day of golf and fellowship, while raising money for Mike’s Scholarship Fund” said Dr. Chad Guess. All proceeds go to the Dr. Mike McPeak Memorial Scholarship Fund at Palmer College of Chiropractic. Dr. McPeak, who was a respected chiropractic physician in Coshocton for over 25 years, lost his valiant battle with cancer three years ago. This scholarship fund was started out of respect for the profession he dearly loved and Dr. McPeak’s desire to help chiropractic students in need of financial assistance. All proceeds from the event will help fund the permanent scholarship in Dr. McPeak’s name. The format will be a 4-Person Scramble beginning at Noon with a shotgun start. The cost is $75 per player, $50 for River Greens members, which covers golf, cart, range, gift, lunch, dinner and great prizes. All women’s teams will compete for their own prizes and first place winnings dependant on the number of teams entered. There are a wide variety of sponsorship opportunities, and an option for non-players to join the group for dinner. For registration and sponsorship forms,

Construction of the church
The Coshocton landmark with bright red doors, known as Trinity Episcopal Church at the corner of 7th and Main Sts., marked its 100th year at the location with a celebration on Saturday, June 11 at 2 p.m. The festival service was at the church, with
Bishop William Persell in attendance, who also officially installed the Rev. Dr. Diane Cook as rector of the church. During the service of installation, Dr. Cook accepted the responsibility for shepherding the congregation. She was presented symbolic keys to the parish that she may open doors for prayer, a book of the church Canons representing the parish connection to the Diocese of Ohio, a stole and oil for anointing the sick, and a cross symbolizing ecumenical ties to the whole community. Following the service, there was a reception in the church undercroft. Hon. Steven Mercer, Mayor of Coshocton, issued a proclamation commemorating the 100th anniversary of Trinity Parish, and presented it at the reception following the service on Saturday.

“The Event”, a program designed to save the unsaved in Coshocton County, is quickly approaching and is still in need of volunteers. Sign-up sheets have been sent to 25 local churches and most area pastors are in full support of “The Event”. “Whether your church is involved or not, you as an individual can get involved by inviting someone you know,” said Larry Massie, pastor of Solid Rock Foursquare Church, “Bring people you know so that they can know the same Jesus that you do.” The day of “The Event”, volunteers will meet at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds to begin setting up the stage, sound and props. They will meet back at the Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. to have prayer with the program beginning at 7 p.m. Ushers will be available to help direct people to the program which would best fit their individual needs, depending on their age. There will also be a map at the gates. Andy Loos, pastor at Liberty Church, is excited about “The Event” and fully supports any evangelistic event in the county. He said

By Jan myers Agene Parsons, Nathaniel Samsel, and Patti Amelotte. The concerts will take place on the Coshocton County Courtsquare and visitors are encouraged to take along their favorite lawn chair. The festival concert headliners are mountain dulcimer player, Rob Brereton and hammered dulcimer player, Sam Rizzetta. They will perform beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 at the Coshocton Presbyterian Church. Admission is free to the concert but there will be a freewill offering. Rob Brereton is considered one of the pioneers in contemporary mountain dulcimer playing. His years of studying classical guitar have polished his playing style while his degree in music theory and composition has given him a fresh approach to arranging. Brereton was one of the first dulcimer players to arrange extensively in the chromatic 1-3-5, and other alternate tunings. Although he specializes in the standards and early jazz tunes of Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, and the like, Brereton is equally adept at playing the more traditional styles and dulcimer repertoire. Sam Rizzetta has performed at numerous festivals as well as at the National Cathedral, the Kennedy Center, on National Public Radio, and on public television. A Rizzetta concert may blend classical, folk, gospel, new age, old-time tunes, ragtime, original music, and other surprises. He has designed and handcrafted musical instruments since childhood, and his dulcimers and guitars have long been prized by musicians. Rizzetta dulcimers have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution. He has recently been nominated for a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship for lifetime achievement in the arts. Sponsors for the Dulcimer Days Festival include Wildwood & Friends as the sponsor for the Mid-Eastern Hammered Dulcimer contest and The Coshocton Co. Chamber of Commerce as the sponsor for the Mid-Eastern Mountain Dulcimer contest. Other sponsors are Jim & Norma Trotter, Tri County Dulcimer Society, Harvest Moon of Berlin, Brenda & David Lozowski, Ohio Heritage Bank, Jacobs Vanaman Agency, Young’s Trophies/Second Chance Furniture, WTNS Radio, and Richard & Theresa Halsey. The festival raffle is for a dulcibanjo donated by festival sponsor Gitterpicker String Factory. I plan on being cremated, is embalming necessary for cremation? Answer: No. In most cases, it’s your choice. It may depend on such factors as whether or not your family selected a service with a public viewing of the body, whether there is to be a funeral service, or whether there is refrigeration available. Embalming may also be necessary if the body is going to be transported by auto, air or rail out of state or because of the length of time prior to the cremation. Certain factors have to be met before a cremation can take place, a death certificate must be completed, a cremation permit obtained, cremation authorization forms completed and at least 24 hours must have elapsed since the person passed away. As I always say, it’s an easy process to set up your funeral arrangements ahead of time. More and more families are finding out how easy it is to set up their own pre arrangements with Matt Miller or Jim Lapp. Please contact them at Miller Funeral Home, 622-8000 to make an appointment.

Since the spine protects the nervous system, problems in the spine can cause a large variety of health problems. Chiropractic care removes your body’s “short circuits” safely and effectively. 2. EATING RIGHT/GOOD NUTRITION – We provide clinical nutrition with the use of herbal and whole food supplements. Through simple, non-invasive testing we can customize a health plan for you that doesn’t involve hard-to-follow diets. Results are typically seen quickly and without great expense. 3. EXERCISE – This one’s up to you... walking, running, yard work, sports or just playing with your kids...whatever the case, regular exercise is of utmost importance in maintaining healthy bones, joints, heart, hormone balance, circulation and so much more! At the end of the week, all of the food will be donated to New Life Ministries’ Food Pantry. The Bible School week concluded on Sunday with their program during the 10:30 a.m. church service where they sang five songs, each with the daily Bible verse theme they had learned during the week.

Kids at Roscoe United Methodist Church were “Wild About God” last week as the church presented their Vacation Bible School program entitled, “Pandamania – Where God is Wild About You”. The entire church was decorated with pandas and all things wild and fun. There was even a friendly panda bear roaming the halls, Patty Panda, more commonly known as Susie Stout, and she spent time with the kids every morning leading them in songs and worship. “It’s actually been pretty awesome,” said Patty Panda, “You get to touch the lives of all these kids and share God’s love with them and encourage them to accept Him as their Lord and Savior for their life and to go out and tell others. It couldn’t be better.” Each day, the kids gathered in the fellowship hall to sing praises to God and to learn a new Bible Verse that was referred to throughout the day as the kids enjoyed crafts, games, snacks and story time. Almost 60 volunteers including 32 adult volunteers and 23 teen leaders, or ‘jungle guides’, led the kids throughout the day from station to station. Seventy-five kids pre-school age through 6th grade pre-registered for this year’s Bible School. However, every day, over 100 kids came through the church’s doors ready to learn about God and have fun. Jen Jones, leader of this year’s Bible School, believes it’s important for kids to come to Vacation Bible School each year and to understand that learning about God is fun. “I think, first thing is, they have fun,” she said. “But as they’re having fun, they’re learning about God. A lot of kids, this is the only exposure they have to God. If they can’t get to Sunday services or the Wednesday night programs, this is all they learn about God, so we want to make sure they have fun, and we don’t want them to think that learning about God is boring. It’s always great, it’s always fun. I think that’s the biggest thing. To give them a little taste of the miracles that are God and hope that they’ll want

The club donated $500 to R.E.A.C.T. from funds received via a Gratitude Grant from the Elks National Foundation. The lodge also donated $250 to the Walhonding Valley Fire Department. Coshocton County R.E.A.C.T. President Tim Wise said, “This is just great. This is fantastic. Organizations support R.E.A.C.T. and we like to give to the community and the community likes to give back to us and we really appreciate it. I just want to thank the Elks, and thank everybody involved. I was overwhelmed when they called and told me about it. This is great.” Marilyn Griffis, Past Exalted Ruler and current chair of the Veterans committee for the Coshocton Elks Lodge said, “The National Foundation was founded by the Elks in 1928 and they use the principle on the original money invested and they give back to the community via scholarships, hoop shoots, soccer shoots, Veterans and grants to the community. I applied for a $1,000 grant and we were able to put on a Veterans barbeque with that money (held on Memorial Day at the lodge) $500 to R.E.A.C.T. and we’re also giving $250 to the Walhonding Valley Fire Department. Elks are involved in the community. Most people don’t know what we do in the community so I’m making it my goal to make sure they know what we do.”

Rex Swartzbeck, who literally drove away in his yellow 2003 Chevrolet “T-Rex” Corvette with what is considered a most prestigious award; the Roscoe Village Choice Award, said, “It’s hard to explain because some things are really emotional. This is above and beyond, it means a lot, it really does. I’ve been coming to this show for a few years now and you see this award given out and I never thought that a newer car would be worthy enough for somebody to think that it’s worthy of that award. I know how much I have in it and it’s special when everyone else thinks it’s worthy and they’re willing to recognize that. It means a lot.” His 2003 Corvette features twin turbos, custom yellow and black seating, custom designed chrome plates with a “T-Rex” design on the door frame, in the cowling, and Swartzbeck even boasts a “T-Rex” tattoo on his lower left leg. The engine boasts 550 horsepower with the twin turbos, which Swartzbeck laughingly said, “I’ll never use.” Brad Birkhimer, who owns Birk’s Blacksmithing in Roscoe Village and who designed the custom forged black iron award, patterned after a 1954 Corvette front grille, said, “This was inspired by the 1954 Corvette. It’s not to scale or anything, it’s not a duplicate or a reproduction, it was just inspired by it. This incorporated a lot of blacksmithing technique with the twisting, drawing out and shaping of the iron. Every year I try to look at the Corvette and find another part off of the ‘Vette that I can use for the trophy. This is something you can’t get anywhere else but Roscoe Village. That’s what makes this show so special and I know all the guys and gals that have the ‘Vettes look forward to this show every year, so we’ll see what we come up new and exciting for next year. I appreciate all of the opportunity that Roscoe Village gives me to come over here and display my work at the show. I want to thank them very much.” With well over 200 Corvettes on display, Roscoe Village Marketing Director Debbie McDonald said, “It’s a great turnout, it’s probably the best turnout that I’ve seen in the past couple of years. The weather held off and that’s good. It’s great to have this for the community; it’s another activity and event for the community, along with the hot air balloon festival. It’s also good for the shops and the restaurants here in the Village. We have a lot of new shops and a lot going on in Roscoe Village right now.” The Corvette show was sponsored by Classic Glass Corvette Club, Inc. of New Philadelphia.
