ictured is 11 year old Kyle Daugherty, son of Bill and Caroline Daugherty of the Keene area. Daugherty will be a sixth grader at Keene Elementary this fall and this was his ﬁrst time pulling. The tractor is his Uncle Vern Mizer’s 1950 McCormick Farmall – and Daugherty said, “We still use the tractor for square bales and as a utility tractor. This was my ﬁrst time to pull – it was fun!” When asked about his pull, the 11 year old simply replied, “Well, I got caught up a bit in the beginning – there was a hole and I couldn’t get out of it like I wanted to”. As many readers know, Kyle’s mom, Caroline, recently retired as the head coach of the River View High School girls basketball program. The Beacon asked the young man about that, and he said, “I’m going to miss seeing all the girls – and all the fun we had. It was great”. (Beacon photo by Mark Fortune)

ell friends, we’ve got some trouble in River City, as they say. No, I‘m not talking about Coshocton County! I am referring to Tehran. This election dispute could get real bad, real quick. Any opinions on this situation? Should we get involved? Stay out? If we were to get involved, what would we do? This is a sticky one that seems to have ﬁred up the younger voters – especially the young women – in Iran. This is one example where the social network of Twitter, Facebook and other sources has allowed the people to communicate with the world despite the government crackdown on the tried and true news media. It is highly possible that we have just witnessed an historic event in that realm. Dictators and tyrants beware. On the local scene, our sources tell us that around

3500 people went to the calling hours for Matt Lingo. What a tremendous outpouring of community support for this family! Let’s make sure that the support continues. Another family that needs our support is that of two year old Reina Patterson. This young child’s tragic death is just simply inexcusable and abhorrent. Let us hope that some lesson is learned in some way from this horriﬁc tragedy. Our community is better than this – and now we need to prove it. This does not mean that Coshocton County is “lily white” nor does it mean that we do not have some bad apples. EVERY community does. It is HOW we respond that will set us apart from other communities around our state and the country. If you had the opportunity to attend some of the many events held over the past couple of weekends – Dulcimer Day’s, Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department Chicken Barbeque, Corvette Show at Roscoe Village, vacation bible school programs, or any of the other events – you know that Coshocton County con-

tinues to be blessed with giving people that volunteer their time, energy and talent to provide food and sponsorships for the events throughout our community. Did you know that people from Oklahoma, West Virginia, Indiana and our own community were here for Dulcimer Days this past weekend? Held at the Courtsquare under the cool shade provided by the trees that our forefathers had the foresight to plant many years ago – the event was a success. This is great music performed by great people. Have you been through Roscoe Village lately and stopped in at one of the shops that are owned and operated by local families to show your support? How about Main Street? Warsaw? West Lafayette? Downtowner Plaza? Maybe you’ve been to a corner store or diner located in one of the more outlying communities like West Bedford, Plainﬁeld, Cooperdale, or perhaps, like me, you enjoyed the delicious chicken barbeque at Bakersville on Saturday night. And my favorite time of the summer is approaching! It’s ice cream social time! The Keene Grange social was fabulous and Isleta UMC is coming up!

I am sure there are others. Speaking of homemade ice cream, I have attempted to make homemade ice cream twice this summer – and each time the freezer just keeps on running. This is not good. We are using the same recipe that we have used for years – I am thinking that the freezer motor is just plain worn out and can’t turn the crank fast enough anymore. Sound familiar? It could be time for a new one! Motor, that is. Oh, almost forgot to tell you, follow The Beacon on Twitter – Beacon43812. Seems like progress, huh?

eople from the Bakersville area and other locations in the county always turn out in a big way for the annual Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department Chicken Barbeque and Tractor Pull. Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bill Burgan said that the event has been going strong since the late 60’s and early 70’s. Burgan said, ‘This is our major fund-raiser for the department, we cook 900 chicken halves and started about 9:30 am (Saturday) this morning. We currently have 21 volunteers on the department. Burgan said, “I would to thank all of the volunteers that help make this event a success. Without their help it wouldn’t happen”.

I am sending this THANK YOU to each and every person who has ever stopped by the New Life Ministries Food Stand at the Coshocton County Fair for the last eight years since I have been the Pastor. We have decided to no longer operate the food trailer at the fair for a number of reasons. As one person summed it up, “The trailer is wore out and so are we.” That sounds funny but we have had to put most of our profits into the trailer to keep it going each year and we have worked our helpers long and hard, and this will give them an opportunity to enjoy the Fair with their families for a change. We will dearly miss seeing all of you at the stand and have enjoyed the friendships we have developed over the years. You are the best! Over twenty students from Coshocton, Ridgewood, Newcomerstown and River View have been practicing four and five days a week for the past several weeks plus additional workshops on Saturday’s to prepare for the summer youth production opening of “Grease” at the Triple Locks Theater on July 9 at 8:00 pm. Directed by Shelly Lillibridge and Lynn

Jacobs, this school version of “Grease” is based on the Broadway musical and follows the exploits of “The T-Birds” and “The Pink Ladies”. Lynn Jacobs explained, “All of these kids are uber talented!” Shelly Lillibridge stated, “The talent for the musical is there – there is so much talent in this group of kids. Hopewell celebrates people with disabilities Hopewell Industries will have a Freedom Celebration on Wednesday, July 1 outside in the parking lot that celebrates the independence and choice of people with disabilities. Any disabled person in Coshocton

County is welcome to attend. The event will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and will feature a guest speaker from People First, a free lunch at 11 a.m. and live music. At noon, people with dis-

The amphitheater is intended to be used for weddings, music, garden lectures, and much more. The first wedding took place over Memorial Day weekend and there are several others booked into next year. Adjacent to the amphitheater is the new Rose Garden. This spring, over 100 bareroot roses were planted and are now in bloom.

Clary Gardens will be celebrating the Grand Opening of its new amphitheater--Theatre in the Ravine. The event takes place this July 4th and will include musical performances by the Rube Band (1:00 to 2:30 p.m.) and Wildwood and Friends (3:30 to 5:00 p.m.) The public is invited to come out to the garden and enjoy live music and free ice cream, provided by Coshocton’s Dairy Service Unit. The objective of this program is to foster trust and build relationships with law enforcement, as well as to increase awareness of law enforcement through practical experiences. Examples of the day’s activities include crime scene investigation tactics, simulated suspect chase, simulated civilian rescue, exploring the features of the Mobile Command Unit and

armored personnel carrier, and demonstrations from specialty units such as the Mounted Unit, K-9 unit, and tactical squad. This event is open to all community children, ages 8-18. Bikes and Bands join together to raise money for Hospice By Jan Myers The 5th Annual Coshocton Memorial Fest Poker Run and the Sam Rivera Memorial Bike Show will be Saturday, July 11 at Agents Realty and Auction Complex, 23024 County Road 621, Coshocton. The Coshocton Memorial Fest Committee hosts this event each year to raise money for Hospice of Coshocton. Over $32,000 has been donated to Hospice from the previous four years’ events. Mickey Smith of Twisted Image Cycles, and Mike Parks are the co-chairs of the Memorial Fest Committee. “We definitely couldn’t do all this without our committee of six or so other people,” said Parks. “We have all had personal family experience with Hospice and feel strongly that we want to help contribute to the organization.” The event will include a motorcycle poker run. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the last bike is to go out by noon. The cost to participate in the poker run is $15 per driver or $20 per couple. The poker run registration includes all the days’ events including the bike show and the concert. New to the event this year is the Sam Rivera Memorial Bike Show. “Mickey Smith held the bike show last year at Gators,” said

Members of the OSU Fencing Team and treasure hunts will both add to the fun at this year’s 4-H Junior Camp, July 5th- July 9th at 4-H Camp Ohio! “4-H Camp: A Pirate’s Life for Me” is our theme for 2009 as we do different fun activities around our pirate theme at camp. A special event this year following our pirate theme is an all-camp session with students and a coach on the OSU Fencing team demonstrating fencing skills and telling about the equipment. Campers will also be working in groups one evening to follow treasure maps and clues to search all over camp to find hidden treasure boxes. One afternoon will be “game time” as campers play “Human Fooseball”, “Fun Noodle Games”, and “Human Plinko”. The last day, the camper groups will also be building cardboard pirate ships at the stream, putting a camper inside, and seeing which ship floats the longest time. Any youth, boy or girl, ages 8 and in the third grade on January 1, 2009, may attend 4-H Junior Camp. Youth finishing the 8th grade and entering the 9th grade will attend as a last-year camper. Also campers should consider making a 4-H Camp Lamp taught by personnel from The Frontier Power Company. Surf’s Up serves up ice cream with a smile

Surf’s Up, a new ice cream shop with a purpose much greater than just serving ice cream cones, is now open. The business is located on State Route 83 north, just past the turn to Lake Park and the soccer fields. The shop opened with economic stimulus funds under a program to hire youth and young adults and operates under Community Family Ministries, a local non-profit agency. to drain). After learning these valuable lifelong lessons, students were very eager to do their part in assisting the City of Coshocton to protect our water quality. Groups were led by school teachers and Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District personnel. Over 125 storm drains have been labeled thanks to the efforts of these students. Students not only labeled storm drains, they were also asked to list the possible sources of pollution they found entering the storm drains. Students found the following: a lot of cigarette butts, dirt, cans, gasoline, candy and gum wrappers, gum, oil, dead grass, tree branches, roof shingles, soap from the car wash, chemicals, paint, glass, chipped paint, Styrofoam, food containers, part of a rake, chunks of wood, chunks of concrete, and rusted pieces of metal. One group actually found a dead animal in the storm

drain, and a group found a puddle of antifreeze on Main Street. Once again, in the City of Coshocton, anything that goes into a storm drain will end up in the Muskingum River. Students also took a look around the storm drains they were labeling and were asked to list any evidence of people doing something to protect our water quality. Students listed: areas of grass planted, flowers, riding a bike instead of driving a car, drain at the car wash, trash cans placed along the street for people to dispose of trash properly, edging the property, and metal grates to catch trash before it enters the storm drain. There was also evidence that people have cleaned the storm drains around their property. Students listed problems they saw that could be improved including: quit throwing trash out (there is a proper place to put your trash), clean storm drains (especially gather up the

Nancy Nixon was recognized during the evening concert held at The Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 20. A near capacity crowd filled the sanctuary during this warm summer evening and enjoyed songs by Susan Trump and the Lindsey Family. Trump played a repertoire of songs about Americana – about making hay and songs from “O’ Brother Where Art Thou”. Belinda Williamson, Director of the Coshocton County Convention & Visitors Bureau explained the importance of keeping Dulcimer Days in Coshocton, “We’ve had such a positive response to this event. Heather LePage, scholarship committee chairperson, said, “Education is the most important thing. What better investment can we make as Realtors than to invest in our future leaders and our children for our community”. The Coshocton County Board of Realtors has presented four area seniors with these $1,000 scholarships for several years. State Representative Troy Balderson was

in attendance for the presentation. Heather Ames Guess, Special Events Committee Co-chair also presented a check in the amount of $400 to Coshocton County Red Cross board member Dave Powers. The money was raised during the May First Friday bake sale held by the Board of Realtors. Christi Olinger, President of the Coshocton County Board of Realtors stated, “We are proud to be able to help these young people further their education. The community is very supportive of local Realtors and this is one way that we can return that appreciation to our community”.

Local Blood Drive To Be Held In Roscoe Village. The Roscoe Village Business Association will sponsor an American Red Cross blood drive in Roscoe Village on Monday, July 13th at 10am to 4pm at the Visitor Center. According to Brad Fuller of the Coshocton Chapter for the American Red Cross, “The summer months are quite challenging for the Red Cross to schedule enough blood drives to meet our goals. We are always looking for groups to have blood drives in the summer”. In the unique setting at the Visitor Center, donors will be able to enjoy the dioramas and other canal related items with a special guest appearance by our 1800s doctor, Dr. Maro Johnson. He will enlighten our donors on the 1800s medical practices, however, we guarantee you the actual blood collection will be performed by a trained staff member with the Red Cross.
