of the community, and success starting up the Habitat ReStore facility, they recognized her as the strongest candidate. In her new capacity, Sue will manage the day-to-day operating issues of the affiliate by coordinating activities between the various committees and community entities. The paid, full-time position is funded by a Capacity Build Grant the affiliate qualified for earlier this spring. The Coshocton affiliate was one of 30 affiliates nationally awarded the grant this year. The grant describes the steps the affiliate will be taking over the next three years to increase the number of partner families served in the community. The Executive Director’s position will be funded over the same three periods with decreasing funding each year. During that time, Sue and the board will develop funding to assure the position is self-sustaining. The board is excited by Sue’s energy and commitment to Habitat. The new Executive Director’s position will strengthen the program to be more effective in providing housing for partner families in Coshocton County. The Habitat Mission Statement - Habitat for Humanity of Coshoct¬on County works in partnership with God, people, and families, from all walks of life, as a house building organization, revitalizing neighborhoods one family at a time. Their goal is to make decent shelter a matter of conscience within our community so that every person can experience God’s love.

FAMILY SHOE STORE COMING TO COSHOCTON
God took Dean so suddenly June 25 at such a young age. Words can’t describe how we feel. We loved him and miss him so. He was a fine young man and we are proud and honored to have had him for 18 years. Dean choosing to be a donor makes him a hero to the many young lives he will save. Dean’s memory is being remembered in many ways through his friends and that we are so grateful for. We the family would like to express our sincere appreciation to Coshocton React, EMS, Sheriff’s Department, ER nurses, Dr. Patel, Pastor Mathewson and Sandy, Ken & Virginia Free, CCMH staff, Rock Ten, Friends, Family, and neighbors for the lovely gifts, food and cards. We will have a celebration of Dean’s life for friends and family September 24 at 3:00pm at Lake Park. Further information at a later date.

Children that attend the Roscoe United Methodist Church join in the fun with the 120-member strong Sonshine Choir from Brentwood UMC in Tennessee. The choir performed at Roscoe as part of their Sonshine Choir Tour Saturday evening and again on Sunday morning. The choir consists of high school sophomores, juniors and seniors and is directed by Mr. James Wells. Les Widder, music director at Roscoe UMC, said about the Saturday evening performance, “The quality of their music and their spirit is what I really enjoyed and was uplifted with last night. The people that were here were moved to tears and blessed. We were able to have the choir thanks to Mr. Jim Humphrey, superintendent for the Three Rivers United Methodist Church District, who contacted our Pastor, Coralee Cox and told us that they were coming through the area. We just couldn’t pass up the opportunity.” Widder also expressed his appreciation to the many families that hosted the youth on Saturday night. Beacon photo by Mark fortune

Judges for America in Bloom visit Coshocton Letter to the editor by Evelyn Alemanni and Diana Weiner 2011 America in Bloom Judges Congratulations to Coshocton for your second year of participation in the America in Bloom (AIB) competition! Two AIB judges peered through your parks, neighborhoods and business districts on July 14 and 15. All this probing was to determine and praise your community’s progress in discovering and touting its amenities and attributes; and improving the environment and the quality of life of its citizens. America in Bloom’s goal is to assist communities in becoming a destination to live, work and recreate. America in Bloom is a community building endeavor. The eight criteria judged – Tidiness, Environmental Effort, Community Involvement, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscaped Areas, Floral Display and Turf and Groundcover – are designed to bring communities and people together to achieve improvements to their quality of life. The judges provide insight and consultation toward improvement and their recommendations will be available to you in October. AIB has involved nearly 200 towns across America. AIB offers
communities sustainable solutions in view of budget busting economies, out-sourcing, mobile lifestyles and environmental trends. The culmination of this awards program is detailed in a scoring and evaluation document presented after the Awards Ceremony and Educational Symposium, held this year in Washington, DC from October 6 – 8. While top honors are awarded to those who garner the most points among the eight criteria, all participants are truly winners by virtue of their participation. A healthy, functional community is like a loving extended family where each individual is valued for their intrinsic worth and contribution. A true sense of community is a thing of great beauty. For more information, check out the AIB Web site at www. americainbloom.org Our sincere thanks Bill and Carol Freund, Kerry Rapp, Connie Miller, and many others who made our visit so memorable.

Five-year-old Kendrick Brace takes a turn at cranking a 20 / 31 Ruffin street music organ at the 36th annual Band Organ Rally, held this past weekend in Roscoe Village. Kendrick and his sister, Jacqueline, are from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and were visiting Grandma, who lives in Newark. Pictured right is John Flint, from Livonia, Michigan, who owns the organ. He bought the organ in 1987 and explained that this type of instrument was popular in England following World War I, as veterans of the Great War had permits to perform on street corners. These organs and their owners were often accompanied by a monkey, who typically held out a hat or cup for coins from passersby. Beacon photo by Mark for-

Mentoring Center to have Mud Volleyball tournament The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County, formerly Big Brothers, Big Sisters, is hosting a Mud Volleyball Tournament on Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. at the City Rec Park. There will be a youth tournament, ages 9-14, and an adult tournament, ages 15 and up. The registration fee is $100 per team. Teams can range in size from 6 - 10 players. Team captains are encouraged to call the office at 623-8110 to register their teams. Spectators will be able to enjoy the event for just $1. In addition to the tournament, other family-friendly activities such as corn hole and face painting for kids as well as concessions will also be available. Spectators will be able to sit on available bleachers or can feel free to bring
lawn chairs. No coolers are permitted. According to Executive Director, Sheila Mayse, the idea for this fundraiser came from the agency’s Board Vice President, Jessi Marcincavage. “All the mentoring services provided by the agency are offered free of charge. So we are always looking for new ways to raise funds to support the agency’s mentoring programs. Jessi happened to attend a mud volleyball event in another community and brought it back to us with the idea to design it as a fundraiser. People seem to be really excited about the idea of playing in the mud for a good cause.”
The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County provides mentoring services to children throughout Coshocton County through the Bigs/Littles program, Peer Mentoring program, School Based Mentoring (SMILES) Program, and the Side By Side parent mentoring program. All programs are provided free of charge to children and volunteers. Anyone interested in registering for the mud volleyball event or learning more about any of the programs offered by The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County is encouraged to call the office at 623-8110. TMCCC is a United Way partner agency.

COLUMBUS—State Representative Troy Balderson (R-Zanesville) announced that he has been appointed to serve as Senator of the 20th District of the Ohio Senate. 1951
July 26th, 1951 West Lafayette was to celebrate their homecoming in just two weeks. Planned as part of the homecoming celebrations was to be a detailed history of the West Lafayette school districts. The history in 1951 said that about the time the high school was built, the total student enrollment was 350. Since that time, in 1951, the population of the student body was 638. It was also apparent that in 1951, staff and faculty were concerned about some of the same aspects of the school district as we are today including more space in the classroom for each child, better use of natural lighting, and more diverse activities for students.

July 23rd, 1961 Members of the Coshocton Fine Arts Guild were making their own unique contributions to the Sesquicentennial. For their summer projects, members were to create two paintings celebrating Coshocton’s heritage. One painting had been assigned to each member and the other was a painting of their choice. The finished paintings were to be on display at First National Bank and the public was invited to cast their ballot for their favorite painting. The top three paintings would be displayed in the bank for one week after the contest. The first, second and third place winners would receive a $50, $25, and $10 savings bond respectively.

July 26th, 1971 District Soil Conservational member Richard McConnell hosted a group of 35 prominent men from Kentucky the past weekend. The group, comprised of a court judge, lawyers, bankers, planning commissioners, and farmers were on an annual tour and stopped in Coshocton County to see what the Soil and Water Conservation District was doing to assist urban development and the problems of the urban communities. McConnell gave a presentation about the Lake Park development, the airport and other county developments and then led them on a tour of Roscoe Village. The group was unfamiliar with the Ohio-Erie Canal, so the tour was very interesting to them.
Rough Truck Contest depletes Jeep Sunday

With the Jeep Grand Cherokee supply now seriously depleted in the tri-state region following the annual Rough Truck contest held Saturday evening, July 16 at the fairgrounds, Steve Kash drove away with the grand prize of $500 for the fastest time. The original prize of $300 was bolstered with another $200 from Coshocton Recycling. Kash used a Ford Ranger to earn the prize while Andy Pursel took second overall and won the long jump with his GMC truck, named “Bad Company”. James Kandel placed third with his 2005 Toyota. The contest is held each July to raise funds for the Three Rivers Fire District and the Coshocton County Agricultural Society. Earlier in the day, trophies were awarded at the annual Car Show. This year’s event brought a special guest, the Lucas Oil monster truck from “Team Beast”. The crowd shouted its’ approval as the Lucas Oil “Stabilizer” spewed dust and dirt as it roared up and down the track in front of the grandstand. Following the event, the giant truck cleared the jump and proceeded to smash four vehicles flat into the ground. This surprise visit was sponsored by the Three Rivers Fire District and the Coshocton County Agricultural Society. Matt Jenkins from Coshocton brought a

July 26th, 1981 It was time for the 4-H Farm Picnic. The picnic was to be at the Coshocton Fairgrounds in the Commercial Building. All county 4-H members, friends, family and past members were invited. Everyone was asked to bring two covered dishes to the event and the Japanese 4-H exchange students were to be the guests of honor. There was to be a square dance at 8:30 p.m. and games for kids at 9:30 p.m. The Farm Bureau and county officials were also hosting an ice cream social. The track is in pretty good shape so we should have a lot of fun.” Jason Lindell, also from Coshocton, was driving a 1992 Chevrolet S-10 four wheel drive, with a four speed V-6 engine. He said, “It’s a stout truck. This is my second year at the Rough Truck. I bent the frame in half last year. I learned to have a better truck and a tougher frame. I just want to do the best I can – better than last year – it’s a good hobby and keeps you out of trouble.” Dylan Boorn, from Frazeysburg, said, “It’s fun to watch for the excitement and the thrill.” Boorn and his buddy, Blake Carroll, literally had a front row seat, camped out in lawn chairs in the bed of a pick-up truck near the fence. Chief Lynn Powelson of the Three Rivers Fire District, along with the members of the Agricultural Society, thanked the drivers, volunteers, crowd, local sponsors and those that served food, including the Three Rivers Fire District Ladies Auxiliary and the Junior Fair Swine board, for making the event possible. Jerry Lower provided the commentary for the evening.

Mention pigeons in Coshocton, and the most common response goes something like this, “If you want to talk about bird pests, talk about crows.” The great crow infestation of late winter 2011 remains vivid for most city residents. Back in the thick of the sticky mess, a crow sympathizer, and there were sympathizers, commented, “If we couldn’t complain about the crows, we’d be complaining about the pigeons.” It’s summer. The crows have dispersed to their nesting grounds as far away as Canada. Is anyone complaining about pigeons? In the fall of 2008, there were 364 pigeons that alternately sat on the roof of the Maria Hay Forbes Center and the electric lines passing over WTNS. Coshocton Opportunity School students counted them as part of a collaborative project with the Pomerene Center for the Arts. Since the demolition of the Maria Hay Forbes Center and its pigeon-friendly tower and ample eave returns, where have all those pigeons gone? Artists Anne Cornell and Amy Youngs are interested in learning where the pigeons have relocated. In turn, they are proposing to relocate 10 pairs from these current environments, where they are presumably unwanted, to the old PARK hotel space where they can be managed. They think in terms of deviating from the Elmer Fudd/Bugs Bunny prototype of human/ animal relationships and ask…Doesn’t Elmer
