Cannons roared, hooves thundered and the crack of Civil War muskets rang out as smoke and commands filled the air during a Civil War reenactment on Saturday afternoon at the top of airport hill. Civil War reenactors portraying both Union and Confederate forces came to Coshocton from several states and camped last weekend. During the weekend, mock battles, a Civil War ball, demonstrations and discussions were held. While the outcome of Saturday’s battle was clearly won by the boys in butternut following a valiant bayonet charge across an open meadow into the face of overwhelming cannon fire, the Union forces never wavered, fighting to the last man. The Confederate forces had wisely chosen the higher ground and used that to their advantage as several Southern artillery barrages gave the Yankees more than they wanted, opening the way for two companies of Rebel infantry – accompanied by the Rebel yell - to cross the open ground as the Rebel flag waved proudly and bayonets glistened in hot afternoon sun. If not for the crowd dressed in modern day clothing, it would have been fairly easy to immerse yourself into a Civil War battlefield. A large crowd gave the reenactors an enthusiastic round of applause even as they faced down a bayonet charge from the remaining Confederates. Seven year old Autumn Jones said the battle was, “scary”. She was not rooting for anyone in particular. Her eleven year old sister, Halley Jones, said, “I thought it was neat. I thought it was really cool that they had all the weapons out and they were firing them.” She did know that “we” won the war. Their five year old brother Jayden Jones, said, “It was nice. I enjoyed the cannons the most.” The children’s father, Jason Jones, said he brought the kids because he thought it was important to see a part of history and what went on during the Civil War. Cub Scout pack leader Shawn Brink, who brought some of the boys from Cub Scout Pack 400, who meet at St. John’s Church, said, “We camped up here this weekend. The boy’s have had a great time, the cannon blast last night (Friday night) that was real nice. We’re camping by the runway so we’ve seen some planes land. We really enjoyed the reenactment, they’ve asked a lot of questions, and everyone is real excited about talking to the boys, it’s been a good weekend. The boys really wanted to understand more about the Mason-Dixon line, and where it was and that was pretty neat for them.” The Beacon wants your opinion! Tasting Bar Assistants, Kitchen Staff & Hostess Interview hosted on site - Bring resumes & references

August 22nd, 1971 Two Pennsylvania women were visiting Coshocton to try and trace their ancestors. The two were related to each other and were descendants of the first white couple married in Coshocton in March of 1779. Miss Esther Baird, great-great-great-granddaughter of the couple, and Miss Virginia Leith, another descendant, were in Coshocton for the Canal Days Festival. Both women commented that they were impressed by how many people participated in the festival. They hoped to visit the library before they left to research their ancestors, John and Sally Leith, and to tour the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum.

1981

August 23nd, 1981 While most senior centers offered lunch meals just during the weekdays, Jean Borden of Kno-Ho-Co in Coshocton saw a need for meals for seniors on the weekends as well. Borden was convinced that weekend meals were necessary to offer to local seniors when they told her they often get lonely on the weekends. She was also afraid that senior citizens may be eating poorly or not at all during the weekend, especially if they had no families to take care of them. So the Senior Center in Coshocton opened their doors for meals during the weekend for local seniors. Home delivery was also available. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

THE PAST

August 19th, 1951 Believe it or not! Ripley’s Believe it or Not exhibit came to Coshocton and featured many strange artifacts people found hard to believe. Most of the exhibit featured part of Ripley’s amazing collection of oddities as well as some of the original drawings from Believe it or Not cartoons. Some of the amazing and strange artifacts included a working model of an inventor’s attempt to perfect perpetual motion, a knife that cuts cold steal, and an Indian necklace made from human fingers of the men massacred at Custer’s Last Stand. But even more terrifying was The Maiden of Nuremburg, a medieval torture device. All of the proceeds from the exhibit would go to the Coshocton County Disabled America Veterans.

COSHOCTON – Not always in the game of golf are lower numbers better. Take last year as an example. The Coshocton High School golf team played solidly as a team, but with only five members on the squad, there was little margin for error. As the 2011 season gets underway, part of the problem has been rectified as four players return from last year’s team while an influx of eight promising freshmen will provide instant depth. “Last year, the kids knew they couldn’t afford to have an off day,” said veteran coach Kevin Kittell. “Our goal is to be competitive this season which last year was tough for us at times because of our numbers.” Senior C.J. Helter and juniors Kyle Corder and Jordan Thompson return to lead the Redskins. Also back is senior Katie Clough, who will play with the boys’ team until she can compete in girls’ competitions. Hoping to break into the varsity group are freshmen Patrick Brouse, Luke Sutton, Thomas Gauerke, Jim Magness, Sam Magness, Jake Glasure, Tristen Spinks and, J.T. Rodgers. The Redskins have had some measurable success early in the season, placing third at the Indian Valley Invitational at River Greens with a score of 329. There, Helter and Brouse both carded 78s, and Corder shot a 79 for the Redskins. A day later at the Garaway Invitational, the Skins placed fourth with an identical score of 329 as Corder shot a 4-over 76, Helter an 83, Sutton 84 and Brouse 86. Kittell sees the Redskins as making an impact in the East Central Ohio League race behind Marietta and Zanesville Rosecrans. “I think we stand a great chance to do well and finish towards the top of the pack this year,” he said. “We also have a goal to advance to district play this year.”

Due to a scheduling conflict, the River View Golf Team will be featured in the Aug. 24 issue of the Beacon. The Ridgewood boys and girls golf team are featured on pages 18 and 19.

Mayse, the idea for this fundraiser came from the agency’s Board Vice President, Jessi Marcincavage. “All the mentoring services provided by the agency are offered free of charge. So we are always looking for new ways to raise funds to support the agency’s mentoring programs. Jessi happened to attend a mud volleyball event in another community and brought it back to us with the idea to design it as a fundraiser. People seem to be really excited about the idea of playing in the mud for a good cause.” The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County provides mentoring services to children throughout Coshocton County through the Bigs/Littles program, Peer Mentoring program, School Based Mentoring (SMILES) Program, and the Side By Side parent mentoring program. All programs are provided free of charge to children and volunteers. Anyone interested in registering for the mud volleyball event or learning more about any of the programs offered by The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County is encouraged to call the office at 623-8110. Answer: The publication of an obituary notice is a matter of your or your family’s personal choice. You and your family are able to control what information is published, if any at all. There isn’t any type of law that mandates you must publish an obituary in a newspaper.

Please feel free to stop by our funeral home and get your family information down on paper with us. It’s doesn’t cost anything to come in and talk with myself or Jim Lapp if you have any questions or concerns about your personal funeral arrangements. When I meet with our client families, I gather the family information and prepare a draft of the obituary. Then, we all proof it together to make sure all of the information is included and correct. As a side note, most newspapers charge for placing an obituary in their newspaper for each day it’s published, typically the price goes up the bigger the city. We are fortunate in Coshocton, our local radio station announces death notices three times a day for no charge.

2010 canal princess letter Hi everyone, my name is Tea’ Boyer and I am the 2010-2011 Coshocton Canal Festival Princess. I have had a great year traveling to different festivals around Ohio and representing my hometown, Coshocton. Some of my favorite festivals that we went to are the Geneva grape and First Towne Days. Oh, and I could never forget the Welston Coal Festival. We found a kitten in the trunk of our car at that one!!!! Talk about surprises!! I have met many new friends this year and the memories we have had will stay with me forever. I have also had the pleasure of traveling with some old friends and our friendships have just grown stronger because of this experience. I was also able to travel and share this experience with one of my best friends, my little sister

Shayna. We have all had some great times together. Amy Jo, Maddy, Haylee, Shayna, Dalton, Marjorie, Aerika, Kassidy and Cali, I will miss you all very much and hope we can all stay in touch!! I hold your friendships close to my heart and I love each and every one of you!!!! I am thrilled to get to be part of this year’s Bicentennial Celebration and I hope everyone will come out and enjoy the festivities. If you see me, come on over and say “Hi!!”. This has been an amazing experience and I want to thank everyone from the Towne Center Association for allowing me the privilege to represent Coshocton. Sincerely, Princess Tea’ Boyer

2010 canal Queen letter

Early American Days to the Genvea Grape Festival. From peppermint lemon sticks at the Old Settlers Day to the downpour of rain at the Dennison Railroad Festival, the experiences will never be forgotten. Each festival gave me a chance to make new friends, catch up with others and share the wonderful things to see and do in our community. I enjoyed traveling with my court and will truly miss all the fun times we had. My advice for the new Queen would be to always remember that you are representing Coshocton, share our community with others, encourage them to visit and of course have fun. The year goes faster than you think. As I crown the new queen there will be a bit of sadness in my heart, but also happiness for the time I have had. Thank you to all of Coshocton for allowing me the privilege to represent this fine community. Cali LaVigne 2010-2011 Coshocton Canal Festival Queen

Representing Coshocton the last three years as Queen’s 1st Attendant and then Queen was not just an honor, but a privilege. Ridgewood high school Boys Golf team Ridgewood hopes to roll through 2011 season By jIm BaRstow WEST LAFAYETTE – The Ridgewood High School golf team has gotten a swift kick of confidence as the 2011 season gets rolling. The Generals have started the campaign with outstanding performances in Invitational play, winning the Garaway Pirate Invite at Willandale Golf Course in Sugarcreek and the Indian Valley Invitational at River Greens. There was already optimism surrounding the team with the return of a nucleus which barely missed advancing to the state tournament in 2010. One of those players was senior Tanner Stoffer, who last year was able to advance to states individually. He has followed that up with a highly successful summer of open tournament play. Returning lettermen Tyler Davis, Dillion McPherson and Howie Young – all juniors, and seniors Austin Manning and Seth Finton make up a group who will compete for varsity time. Hoping to make their way into the lineup will be senior Andy Callahan, sophomores Wesley Cochran, Nathan Hoffman and Kody Dreher, and freshmen Sam Bucher, Austin Brown and Cameron Mizer. Ridgewood also has three girls who are members of the team, including Paige Lane, Shelby Matchett and Amanda Matchett. Stoffer earned medalist honors at the Indian Valley Invite by firing a 1-under-par 71 while Davis and McPherson both broke the 80 mark as the Generals posted and overall score of 309 and easily outdistanced runnerup Maysville, which shot 326. At the Garaway Invite, Tyler Davis stepped to the forefront and fired an even-par 72 to combine with his teammates for a score of 316 and edged co-runnersup Garaway and Zanesville Rosecrans by seven shots in the small-school division. Stoffer shot a 6-over 78, Dillon McPherson finished at 10-over and Seth Finton finished at 12-over (84). The Generals also competed in the first round of the highly-competitive Inter-Valley Conference on Thursday at Hickory Flats and came out on with a score of 301 to remain unbeaten on the year. Garaway was second with a 312 and Hiland took third with a 326. McPherson led the winners with a 72 and Davis was right behind with a 73, Stoffer 77 and Finton posted a 79. The Generals beat Garaway by 11 strokes. “This group has set a goal of making the state tournament as a team and I think they have a very good chance of doing that,” said first year coach Doug Davis said. “They play all the time so they are definitely working at achieving that goal.”
