Sisters Debbie (Dunlap) Booher and Pam (Dunlap) Deibel, who lived in Canal Lewisville growing up, participated in the Canal Festival parade and Mayor’s Promenade with dresses made that closely resembled the dresses they wore as young ladies during a previous Canal Festival. They said they were “Glad we did this. America’s Farmers Grow Communities is a program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, to support farming communities by offering farmers the opportunity to register to win $2,500 for their favorite community charity, including United Way. For every farmer that applies for the program, which ends Nov. 30, Monsanto Fund will give $1 to their local United Way to help food banks, food pantries, Meals On Wheels and other charitable organizations dealing with hunger in their respective county. Rural communities are the heart of America. It’s where people work hard to feed, fuel and clothe our country, and the world. Monsanto believes in rural America, and wants to support the communities where farmers live and work. To date, they have donated $4.2 million to rural areas across our country. Farmers can register for the program at www.growcommunities.com. Your registration will assist efforts to combat hunger. If you’re not a farmer, please share this information with those you know that farm. It’s an easy way to do a lot of good in our community.

The United Way of Coshocton County received a $1,000 donation from AK Steel to be given to an agency that is to be used for energy assistance measures. With this summer’s tremendous heat, the United Way voted to award it to the Handicapped Society of Coshocton County for help with the purchase of air conditioners for those suffering with chronic breathing issues that are exacerbated by the excessive heat. “The donation couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Tracy Haines of the Handicapped Society, “With the high temperatures we had been experiencing, we have seen an increase in applications for air conditioners. This donation will allow us to provide ten additional units to the citizens of Coshocton County. The Handicapped Society is very grateful for AK Steel’s generous donation.” In order to receive an air conditioner from the Handicapped Society, one needs to complete an application and have a written prescription from their doctor. 1951

August 26th, 1951 The Coshocton JayCees always presented some form of entertainment to finance their many youth activities project. For this event, the Coshocton JayCees had chosen to present a ‘turtle derby’ at the Coshocton football field in September. Bob Thomas, chairman of the event, said that although turtles are considered slow, past events have shown that these turtle derbies can be exciting. Local boys would race the turtles, so the event would be both entertaining to the public and serve as a youth program. Local businesses and organizations each had a turtle they sponsored in the race and hundreds of turtles were purchased.

1961

August 26th, 1961 Mad Marshall Jacobs came out of ‘retirement’ long enough to perform a stunt in connection with the Sesquicentennial celebrations. In front of approximately 2,500 spectators, Jacobs, shoeless and wearing a beard and a hat, scaled the courthouse as music played from a nearby truck. He lost his hat twothirds of the way up, but received thunderous applause when he reached the top. Jacobs had a stand on Main Street opposite the courthouse where he had on display some news clippings regarding his previous stunts and many postcards. One newspaper clipping was placed in the time capsule that was buried at the courthouse.

1971

August 27th, 1971 Through the Kno-Ho-Co Community Action committee, approval had been granted from the U.S. Health, Education and Welfare Department to establish a year-round Head Start program in the county. The program would run from September to June. The first year of the program would be in the Coshocton Drive-In Furniture building, which was purchased by a Coshocton resident and dedicated the building to Head Start and other community programs. Coshocton County Head Start Inc. had worked to raise money for the repairs through donations. The program would hopefully begin in October enrolling 30 – 40 children.

BANKRUPTCY

August 30th, 1981 For the first time in its 47-year history, the VFW Post 1330 of Coshocton had both a mother and son in elected positions in the organization. Delora Bailey had been elected president of the Women’s Auxiliary and her son, Robert Jennings, was elected for his second term as post commander. Bailey had been active in the auxiliary for 14 years and she thought it was just wonderful that she and her son had officer positions for the same organization. Bailey was in charge of the auxiliary’s work and Jennings was responsible for daily operations of Post 1330.

redskin football still alive and well

COSHOCTON - Knowledge goes a long way in sports and there is one thing that the Coshocton High School football team has learned over the years. “Our kids know what it takes to be successful,” lauded Redskins head coach Jim Woodrum. Among those traits include dedicating themselves to the weight room in the summer months and carrying their enthusiasm onto the field and the grueling two-a-day preseason practices. “Their work ethic is so good,” said Woodrum, now in his second season as the chief of the Redskins. “That’s probably the biggest key.” Coshocton’s squad will be attempting to achieve a first in school history as it tries to win its division in the newlyaligned East Central Ohio League, and at the same time try to continue a rich tradition of making it to the playoffs. The Redskins have been in the Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason in each of the last four years and are shooting for their 13th overall. Woodrum says that task will be made realistic primarily because of his solid senior class. “We’re very lucky because this class has seen a lot of leadership,” Woodrum said. “That just goes to show that the groups ahead of them have taught them to take on that type of role and they have accepted it and ran with it. They are very good with the underclassmen.” There are 14 seniors on the squad this season, in which the Redskins will compete with Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans, Claymont, Meadowbrook and River View in the ECOL’s small-school division. The big-school division consists of Zaneville, New Philadelphia, Marietta, Cambridge and Dover. “One of our biggest goals is that we want to win all of our home games,” Woodrum said. “We always want to protect our home field and to win the league. This is a new era in the ECOL and we want to be the first league champions in that division and obviously to go on to the playoffs and be playing in week 11.” In regard to the Redskins’ offensive attack, Woodrum feels good about the mix of blocking, passing and rushing. At the skill positions, senior Brody Philabaum returns at quarterback and will be anticipating his fourth varsity letter. He lettered as a kicker his freshman season and has progressed into an

excellent leader. “Brody is such a competitor,” Woodrum said. “He always does a nice job of making good decisions on the field and has performed well under pressure. He took on the kicking duties as a freshman and won the New Philadelphia game for us that year and got us into the playoffs.” Joining Philabaum in the offensive backfield will be seniors Clay Turner and Brandon Walker, as well as junior Sequore Harris. Senior Dylan Ogle also returns at split end where he will pair up with junior Curtis Blake. Junior Tanner Cognion will play tight end. “All these kids are gamebreakers,” Woodrum said. “They can take it to the house about every play.” Senior Drew McNichols returns to help anchor the offensive line at center. The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder will be flanked by senior Jacob Bresciani and senior Nate Conidi at the guards and senior Shane Appis and senior Ren Simpson at the tackles. Bresciani played fullback last season but graciously accepted his new role. “The kids have really taken on that challenge of moving around and sacrificing their individual success for team success,” Woodrum said. “That’s a good feeling for a coach and a good thing to see, especially for the young kids.” Brock Bolden, a junior, will provide a solid back-up at quarterback. “He’s doing a great job and he’s been pushing Brody,” Woodrum said. “If the unthinkable would happen with Brody, I’d feel very comfortable with our situation at quarterback.”

by jim barstow

Defensively, Bresciani and Cognion will be at the inside linebacker positions with Turner and Bolden on the outside. On the line, McNichols and Appis will be at tackle, Conidi and Simpson at the end while Walker and Philabaum play at halfback and Ogle at safety. Chris Huebner and Zach Ball will also see plenty of action both on the offensive and defensive lines. Philabaum will do the punting, senior Evan Johnson will perform kick-offs while both players are capable of extra point and field goal attempts. “We’re very fortunate to have two very good kickers,” Woodrum said. “I’ve coached 15 years on special teams and that’s quite a luxury to have two guys who can do that for you.” Woodrum thinks it will be an exciting season in Redskin Country. “This team works very hard and when you come to watch them play they’re going to be fun to watch,” he said. “They are very enthusiastic. They run to the ball and they love playing defense. “They’re just a great group of kids. They deserve a lot of support and hopefully the community will provide that for them.” The Redskins open the season August 26th when they host East Knox. The ‘Skins also have non-league games against Tuscarawas Valley and West Holmes in weeks two and three. They will also play at Maysville and at Columbus Bishop Hartley in October.

ground while being one of the Generals’ stoppers on defense. At safety, he was the team’s thirdleading tackler with 63 and paced the team with five interceptions. Also back as offensive starters are senior tackle Joe Holmes, senior split end Dakota Albertson, junior center C.J. Grove and junior guard Coy Johns. Senior Chris Saylor will be the team’s quarterback. He saw limited action last season but Slusser is confidence in his leadership capabilities. Dakota Albertson will be the split end with Chris Davidson joining Holmes at tackle. Ben Newell will pair up with Johns, who played tackle last year, at the guard positions. Brian McElhaney, Brett Mitchell and Landon Smith could all see action at wingback with Jerod Lindig, Andrew Vaughn and Derrick Lahna rotating in on the line. Sophomore Ryan Lowe will be the back-up quarterback and Kody Hains will see action at split end. On defense, Jones and Lingo are back at

the ends with Grove and senior Derek Lahna at tackle. At linebacker it will be Zeigler and sophomore Garret Bethel. Albertson and Saylor will man the corners while senior Brian McElhaney returns at safety along with Lenard Davidson and senior Landon Smith. Key reserves include Seth Bergeron at linebacker, Tommy Layman, Holmes and Johns at tackle, Vaughn at end, Cole Zeigler and Tevis Whitt at cornerback and Mitchell and Laken Bluck at safety. Lingo returns at punter with junior Bret Mitchell the kicker and Albertson the holder. Also vying for playing time will be senior Seth Mason. Ridgewood’s roster contains a total of 34 players who donned a uniform last season. Slusser enters the campaign with a 59-10 record, including a stellar 47-1 mark against IVC opponents. The Generals open the season on August 29th at home against Buckeye Trail. New opponents include Waynedale and Martins Ferry in weeks two and three, and Liberty Center in early October.

15 football preview

West Lafayette - Only three Ohio programs have compiled more wins since 2005 than the Ridgewood High School football team, which brings to the forefront one word that every sports squad would like to add to its vocabulary: Perennial. The Generals have simply become winners. They rank statewide behind only Bucyrus Wynford (59-1) and Steubenville (57-3) in total victories since ‘05, having won 56 and lost just four and it is their hope to once again be flirting with another double-digit victory season. That has become a common thread throughout John Slusser’s coaching career at the school where expectations are once again high. “There is always pressure to win,” said Slusser, now in his seventh season as head coach. “This season is no different. Every year is a new challenge.” Ridgewood returns six starters on offense and six on defense from a team that notched the school’s 13th Inter-Valley Conference and 9th consecutive berth in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s post season playoffs. The Generals were 10-1 last year. Among the returnees are seniors Evan Jones, Jake Zeigler, Trent Lingo and Lenard Davidson. Jones, a 6-foot-6, 244-pounder intends to play at Michigan State University once his high school career ends. He was a threat on both sides of the ball. Fourteen of his 59 tackles last year resulted in lost yardage with six quarterback sacks. He also caught 10 offensive passes. A linebacker, Zeigler will be shooting for his third 100-plus tackle season. He led the Orange and Black with 118 stops last year. In his spare time, he will shift over to offensive guard. Lingo is another multi-faceted weapon. A starter at defensive end, he had 60 tackles (11 for loss and six sacks) a year ago and rushed for 314 yards and six touchdowns. He will be at fullback on offense. Davidson chipped in 273 yards on the

black bears relying on experience WARSAW - With a senior-laden squad and a lingering hunger for success, the River View High school football team enter the 2011 season with enthusiasm and excitement. “We’re excited to get started,” head coach Chad Massie said. “We have a nice group of returning players and a lot of kids with experience. We’re anxious to get out of two-a-days and into the season.” Massie emphasized that the Black Bears’ attack will begin up in the trenches where a lot of the experience lies. Colten Kelso returns as the center while Steven Betz and Dane Weaver will man the tackle positions. Shawn Walters and Clay Wilson will play guard. All are seniors. There is a battle for playing time with juniors Kurt Strongosky and Heath West and sophomores Tyler Triplett and Jake Matthews. “Up front with our line we’ve got four seniors who had playing time and within the offense, that’s where it’s going to start,” Massie said. “The guys are beginning to gel well.” The Black Bears average just under 6-foot and 235-pounds. Junior John Brillhart returns as the

quarterback with junior Clay Holsclaw and seniors Shawn Wagner and Gabe Mitchell at running back. Rotating in will be junior Kevin Shroyer and sophomores Brandon Adams and M.J. Carey. “We’re not real strong in terms of depth across the board but running back is probably the place where we are the best at,” Massie said. “I feel good about all six of those guys.” Wilson and West will play tight end with the wide receiving corps consisting of seniors Austen Guthrie, Devin Smith and juniors Jason Hammond, Seth McMahan and Brendon Wriston. “The older guys are getting pushed by the young kids and competition is a good thing,” Massie said. “They’ve had a nice camp.” Defensively, Kelso will play nose tackle while sophomores Josh Kempf and Jordan Mullet backing him up. There is a four-way battle for two defensive end positions with Betz, Weaver, Wilson and Matthews. Inside linebackers are Holsclaw and Walters along with Strongosky and West. Vying for playing time at outside linebacker are Shroyer,

Adams and Wagner. In the defensive secondary will be Smith and Guthrie along with Hammond, McMahan and Mitchell. “Our challenge is to develop a third guy for each spot,” Massie said. “With our lack of depth, a fourth will be tough.” Betts will perform the punting duties while Hammond and Bryce Parkhill will compete for kicking duties. “We feel optimistic,” Massie said. “Every team has their battles that they have to get through but I really like the competitiveness of the kids. They complete every play and that is what we stress. “We have a good senior bunch who’s eager to turn things around.” The Black Bears will compete in the newly-aligned East Central Ohio League with Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans, Claymont, Meadowbrook and Coshocton in the small-school division. The big-school division consists of Zaneville, New Philadelphia, Marietta, Cambridge and Dover.

WARSAW – Chad Gress has experienced a lot of success on the golf course, first as a high school player, then in college and most recently in the area amateur circles. Now his challenge will be to impart the ways of success to the River View High School golf team as the 2011 season unfolds. Gress takes over as head coach from Brad Baker, who spent 14 seasons at the helm. “It’s exciting and a lot of fun, but it’s also a learning experience for me,” said Gress. “Every player is different so you need to learn what motivates them and what doesn’t. I’ve been pushing them quite a bit and have been seeing improvement little by little.” The Black Bears return seven seniors with David McPeak having garnered the most experience. Wade Garret, Sam Hall and Daniel Gwinn all saw varsity action last year with Zach Grier, Andy Raber and Ali rvhs golf team David McPeak, Daniel Gwinn, Wade Garrett, Sam hall, Zack Underwood all hoping to break through this season. Ross Anglin and Riley Zimmerman, and freshman Trenton Elliott. PhoTo ConTriBuTeD To The BeACon By LenZo STuDio Gress believes that through inter-squad competition, more solid golf play will emerge. “We have been playing qualifiers before every match. There are no guaranteed spots,” he said. 8/25 West Holmes (Fire Ridge) A 4:15P “We have seven golfers who are very close and by having them qualify each time, it puts more pressure on them to perform and that should pay off 8/29 Claymont H 4:00P as the season progresses,” Gress said. While there is improvement shown, it has not yet translated into 9/01 Claymont A 4:00P success. The Black Bears opened the season by placing eighth in the 11-team 9/08 Rosecrans (Jaycees) A 4:30P Indian Valley Invitational at River Greens, shooting a 368 behind McPeak’s 81. 9/15 Coshocton (River Greens) A 4:00P That performance was followed by a seventh-place finish in the East Knox Invite at Apple Valley. McPeak led the way with a 90 with Anglin 9/16 Coshocton Inv. (J.V.’s) (Hickory) A 8:30A and Hall both shooting 94s as the team carded an overall score of 376. Then, at the Utica Invitational, Garrett emerged to shoot an 82, Gwinn 9/17 RIVER VIEW INVITE H 9:00A 91 and Anglin 92 as the Black Bears shot a 363 and finished eighth. “All the kids have been getting to the course early and putting in the 9/19 Dover H 4:00P work which is what it takes to improve in this game,” Gress said. “We still have a lot of work to do and all the kids are accepting the challenge. Board members, family and friends – including several King Midget car owners – were on hand to help dedicate the ninth Habitat for Humanity home built in Coshocton County last Friday. Located on S. Eleventh Street in Coshocton, the dedication included Coshocton City Mayor

Steve Mercer, Habitat Board President Ernie Galadja, Sue Hardesty, Executive Director of Habitat and a special presentation by Coshocton Rotary Club representative Heather Guess. Rotary will be providing labor and resources for landscaping of the home. Prayers and bible scriptures were also read, blessing each of the rooms in the new home. Along with the key to the new home, a bible was presented to the couple by Reverend Everett Stoddard. Choking back her emotions, a tearful Ann Jenkins said, “We’ve waited a long time for this. We didn’t think we would be able to do it

and as Sue can testify, I just about got up and walked out because I didn’t think we could do the hours and the down payment. We’re blessed to work with Habitat. Each and every one of you has been super good to us. We couldn’t ask for a better group to work with. We just want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts.” Habitat Board President Ernie Galadja said, “I just want to thank everybody for coming here, for the King Midget folks that were in town and shared the day. Thank you for helping make this a special day for the Jenkins family.” Ann Jenkins remarked on how the day made her and husband Dwight feel, “We’re so excited. It’s unbelievable. A dream come true that we never thought would happen for us.” (Editor’s note: The King Midget cars were in Coshocton for the Canal Festival Parade and staying at the Coshocton Village Inn & Suites, which is where Ann is employed. They discovered that the dedication was Friday and made the trek through town to show their support)

Museum Encounter. When we think of artifacts of the Civil War, sword, musket and uniform come to mind as well as insignias, buckles and medals. For loved ones at home, the war was packaged in the dearly cherished letter. Children will begin Museum Encounter: The American Civil War by viewing the special exhibit and learning about the Civil War through the displayed artifacts. Then they will read a selection of soldiers’ letters to learn what the men were thinking while on the battlefields. Children will then use this experience to create a memorial in the form of a mixed media art project. Homeschoolers will participate in the program on Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. – Noon and school children will participate in the program Sept. 17 from 1 – 3 p.m. Program fee is $8 and $7 for Friends of the Museum.
