Caught ya!
The 158th Coshocton County Fair is now but a fond memory and these ladies were caught “napping” in the art hall. From left to right are; Cathy Wegener, Marilyn Todd, Katie Hill and Dianna Moran. (Relax Mr. Markley; this photo was staged for The Beacon!) Seriously, from the folks that staff the buildings, stay overnight, watch the art hall, grange hall, livestock barns, commercial buildings, educational exhibits, keep the restrooms clean, help with parking, staff the food stands and to anyone that helps make our Coshocton County Fair the best in the state – you deserve a big THANK YOU! corn dogs, three dishes of ice cream, several slices of pizza, one Stromboli, donuts, numerous Cokes, sandwiches, bowls of beef and noodles, chili and other goodies and enough coffee to keep those ladies on mark Fortune the front cover awake for the entire fair. And that was just what I had the first two days of the fair! Ha, ha, not really. But all of the above and more were consumed by the thousands of fair goers last week during our community’s signature event, the 158th annual Coshocton County Fair. Now that the midway is silent, the rides have went to Lancaster, the concessions have split and the livestock has either returned to the farm or maybe in some cases, the dinner table, the fair is but another fond memory. CRAFTERS WANTED Call Kathy - 824.4246 | Sherry - 824.4376 It is always a joy to see the fair come – and usually as Wednesday rolls around – to see it go. And I imagine anyone that has a booth, animals or serves on the senior or junior fair board, agrees with that statement. It was really a great fair this year, and with the exception of Friday and Thursday, the weather was “fair like” with cool temperatures and

Michelle Stipes and the Stipes family would like to extend our thanks, appreciation and love support in our time of sorrow in the loss of Keith L. Stipes. The cards, food, flowers & money gifts were so touching to all of us. Thanks to the friends who took their time to build a deck & ramp for Keith. The friends who put their time and energy towards the benefit that was held at the Coshocton County Sportsmans Club. Thanks to all the businesses that gave donations for the benefit. Special thank you to all the doctors, nurses, therapists, hospice & handicap society. Coshocton Christian Tabernacle, Pastor Dan Keaton, George Roberts & Sheldon Mencer. sunny skies. The businesses and organizations that came out to support the junior fair livestock auction deserve some appreciation and more importantly, your (and our) business. It’s always interesting to note the out of town businesses that garner a lot of our dollars being absent at this event. Be sure to take note of those that did support this worthwhile event for the 4-H and FFA youth of our community – and support them. It looks like the Buckeyes moved past Cincinnati with their victory over Wisconsin this past weekend. The Bucks could make the BCS real interesting if they keep winning. That team up north could prove to be a bit of a challenge this year but Jim Tressel always has the team prepared for that one. On the local level, the Generals and Redskins are positioning themselves for a football playoff run while a few of our cross country runners are having exceptional years. And boys and girls soccer and high school volleyball is also gearing up for the tournaments. The young people of Coshocton County are exceptional in many ways and whether it is with the band, sports, academics, the fair, or other pursuits, be confident in our youngsters. They have what it takes to lead. I want to wrap up this column by thanking each and every one of you that stopped at our fair booth and made a point of saying positive things about The Coshocton County Beacon. The thousands of you that have requested The Beacon either by returning your postcard, signing up online or registering at the fair tells us that we are on the right track. As we start publishing The Beacon weekly, you can expect further improvements in this locally owned newspaper. If you have some ideas for content or an interesting story angle, send me an email: mark@coshoctoncountybeacon.com. And please continue to let us know what you think. Thank you.
THANK YOU! Thanks to everyone for your support and generosity during our 1st Annual Butch Bowman Scholarship Fund Softball Tournament. Butch would be so happy to know that 2 kid’s dreams can be made a little easier in accomplishing their goals. Whether you sponsored a team or played in a game, umpired, worked on prepping the fields, a concession helper or donated food or baked goods, you are all very special people. Thanks again to all of you,

Teresa’s last official day of work was Wednesday, Sept. 30 where she had lunch with her coworkers. “I’m going to miss the people,” said Teresa, “When you work with agricultural people, they are so great to work with. I have a lot of great relationships there.” At her retirement party, Teresa greeted all of her guests and everyone could not stop saying what a wonderful person she is. Finger foods were served and consisted of cheese, chips, pretzels, vegetables, cookies and a celebratory cake. A picture slideshow was also shown and many guests brought gifts. “I have worked with Teresa for over twenty years,” said Mary Beck, Administrator/Clerk for Commissioners, “She is very meticulous. Her information is always correct and she’s always on top of things. That’s Teresa in a nutshell.” Teresa said one of her plans for retirement is to volunteer at the office. “I’m going to help take care of my grandchildren and I’ve already signed up as a Federal Government Earth Team Volunteer,” said Teresa, “I want to help the office because they’ve been so nice to me.”

We are grateful to the many local businesses who donated items for this event." Lowe says the Trirosis Club is a service group that provides for the community by raising funds and giving it to non-profit organizations. "We have donated to groups such as Missionary Maintenance Service, Girl Scouts, Higher Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Women of Witness, Project Lifesaver, Life Line, Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum, Dollars for Scholars, and the Coshocton County Animal Shelter," she said. "Everything we raise from fundraisers such as this event goes back into the community. Last year we gave $3,800 to the community." The Trirosis Club was formed in 1944. They currently have 35 active members who meet the first Monday of each month September through May. On December 7, the club will hold a 65th Anniversary Program for past and present members.

Interested in meeting people from other schools? Do you enjoy trying new activities— anything from art and drama to games and creative activities? Want to help the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum out with art projects, children’s programs, visitor relations, etc.? The Museum Teen Volunteers is a group of high school students (grades 9—12) who meet monthly during the school year. A different activity, often based on the interests of the group, is offered at each meeting. In the past, activities have included making beads, cream puffs, and pottery. The group has also played memory games, followed clues on a treasure hunt, and shared music. The Museum Teen Volunteers has often planned activities for the wider teen community such as an open mike night and murder mysteries. The first meeting will be on October 19th, 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum, located in Roscoe Village. We meet on the lower level so use the back door entrance. The Museum Teen Volunteers was started with these hopes: 1. To involve young people in the work of the museum—from organizing its collections to helping with children’s programs. 2. To give young people the opportunity to engage in casual, creative activities based on their interests. 3. To receive input from youth on the programming of the museum. 4. To foster friendship between members of the area high schools. For more information contact the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum at 622-8710 or e-mail at jhmuseum@sbcglobal.net

Fair
By Dianne merrill
Well, it’s now kind of official… at least for our fun news-feature purposes. Coshocton County residents and others who frequent the Coshocton County fair each year all visit for different reasons and take home a new memory each time. I asked a slew of random people the same few questions to see how different, or alike, the answers would be. Surprisingly enough, it’s not always the French fries! With many of the fair activities already underway on the junior and senior fair schedule, by mid-week the fair was still packed-full of excitement and fun for all who chose participate. Dave and Elanor Smith of West Lafayette took advantage of senior day to take in the sights, sounds, and savor of the fair. Eleanor says, “It’s a nice day to relax and there is a lot to see.” Seeing everything there is to see is exactly what the Smith’s came for. “It’s easy to get around,” says Dave, as compared to the big fairs like the Ohio State Fair.” The couple, who has been together over 30 years, obviously enjoys the same taste when it comes to tempting their palates, but not when it comes to their favorite thing to do at the fair. “We love the shredded chicken from the Ridgewood stand,” said Dave. “They know how to make it!” Dave admits being involved in 4-H when he was younger probably has a big part in what he likes to do most at the fair…see the animals. Dave showed dogs some 50 years ago and remembers enjoying showing lambs while a 4-H member. “I like to go through the animal buildings,” he says. “And she likes to get the free stuff in the commerce building.” Whether young, old, or somewhere in between, the chosen fairgoers all were taking in a bite to eat when I happened to stop them. Linton Township residents Starkey and Carol Lawrence love the Italian sausage and kettle corn respectively , but do agree that their most memorable fair was when their children who are now ages 29, 26, and 23 were knee-high to a grasshopper and full of spunk. Carol says, “When the boys were still little and we brought them to the rides …and that is what I remember the most.” “They grow- up quick,” said Starkey, “Now we can take time and see things. She (Carol) likes to go through the buildings…I still like seeing the bulls just like the boys!” 11- year old Brice Hammond, and Braiden Smith of Ridgewood Middle School tried to attend the fair everyday they said. “I like to see and hear the girls scream (while on the rides),” says Hammond, while Smith just likes to “go upside down the most.” “I can always remember the smell of the fair,” said Hammond, “and that’s my favorite part.” For some visitors who strolled the midway, it was just another way to spend a work day. Chapman and McKenna Toler talked about their favorite foods of apple dumplings and fried Oreos while helping resident 94-year old Myrtle Davis with a treat of her own. Toler still remembers her high school days at the fair the most, as so many may do. “My sophomore year was my favorite,” she said. “I had my first boyfriend.” The Coshocton county fair was family friendly as promised according to Joshua Adelsberger and Stephanie Thomas of Coshocton who brought halfdozen kids out for a day. “Only one is mine and three belong to him,” Thomas joked. “The other two are friends.” Even though the common response for most fun with the joined- at- the- hip friends and siblings was “all the rides,” this year’s fair was great for Adelsberger because “it’s my first time,” he said. “The kids had fun and that’s what’s it’s about.” Meanwhile, Thomas didn’t know what she had until it was gone. She was happy to return to the fair this year. “We have lived out of the country for a year and it’s was nice to come back because we missed it.” Common sights at the fair are the many youngsters and teens working hard primping their prize possessions and projects. Teenage friends, 15 year-old Michaela Elson of Keene and 13- year old Lyndsey Mills of Coshocton were eating their favorite fair delights this year, a “buck-tater” and the famous “midway fries.” The girls, who mostly enjoy “hanging with other friends,” also show animals at the fair. Elson, a member of Kamelid Kushers 4-H, presents her llamas, and Mills of Active Achievers raises goats. “Last year was my favorite fair,” says Elson, “because I won Supreme Showmanship.” Mills says this year will be memorable for quite some time because, “My pigmy goat is reserve champion!” Classmates 17-year- old Jasmine Valdez and 16year- old Alyssia Schlarb have been in Ridgewood FFA for 3 years now, and are even amazing themselves with what they can do. “This may be my most favorite year,” said Valdez. “I made my project all by myself! When I was a freshman, I never thought I could build anything!” The class was required to make a step stool this year. Schlarb, who also shows hogs at the fair, was thrilled that she placed this year. She says it’s a lot of hard work for anyone getting ready for the week- full- of –fun… but it’s worth every minute. Now, if your fair visit is done just right for the entire week every year, there could be just one down side. According to frequent -fair-goers, and as demonstrated by the girls, this could also be used as a method of record keeping of personal fun-levels attained while at the fair. Schlarb says, “Your feet will ache.” “And I have a blister too!” says Valdez. Yes, that is correct. 11 year old Shyann Boone is getting to show her rat “Lucky” at the small animal show. rally held in support of State issue 2
Affordable...low down payment
Area farmers, Farm Bureau members, legislators and agricultural leaders met on Sunday, Oct. 11 at the farm of George and Bev Darr near Newcomerstown to raise awareness about Issue 2, which is on the Nov. 3 statewide ballot. Members of the agricultural community are urging Ohioans to vote “Yes” on Issue 2, which is a ballot issue that will create a board that will set standards for livestock and poultry care that takes into account issues of food safety, local availability and affordability of food, and best farm management practices for animal well being. The Board will be made up of Ohioans, including; Three family farmers, two veterinarians with one of those being the state veterinarian, a food safety expert, a representative of a local humane society, two members from statewide farm organizations, the dean of an Ohio agriculture college and two members representing Ohio consumers. The 12 members will be appointed to the Board, including 10 by the Governor and one each by the House and Senate. The director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture will serve as the 13th member and chair of the Board. Why is this Board necessary? According to information published by the Ohioans for Livestock Care, out of state activist groups have signaled that they would like to bring an initiative to Ohio that would set rigid, inflexible and impractical rules for how livestock and poultry are housed. The regional rally held at Darr Farms was to encourage those present to “get folks out to the polls”. Jack Fisher stated, “Consumers take food for granted. With 3 or 4 generations removed from the farm – we need the awareness now. There is no greater bond between farmers and their

animals. This board will raise the bar in animal care and allows us to validate what we do. Right now, 75 to 80% of Ohioans have no clue as to what Issue 2 is all about. This issue will become part of the Ohio constitution, which is a working document for all Ohioans. This initiative is one step in many to come”. State Representative Alan Sayre told those in attendance, “Ohio farmers and agriculture generate $93 billion for our state’s economy and you have the support of the majority of our state’s legislators and the support of Governor Ted Strickland”. Jerry Lahmers, Tuscarawas Farm Bureau President, said, “34 state organizations support this issue. This is not just about chickens or hog farmers. It is not a question of who will get the regulations – this initiative is about letting the farmers have some say in what is regulated – and how it is regulated. With only 1% of the population producing the food for our country – people trust you as farmers”. Following Lahmers, Brent Porteus, President of the Ohio Farm Bureau, spoke. Porteus stated, “This is a very important issue to the state of Ohio. We must have a passion to be involved in the things that are important to our industry. This is about us taking responsibility for what we do and increase the level of confidence to the consumers. How dare the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) tell us how to do what we do . . . and what we deeply care about. This is all about an agenda coming from someone outside our industry and outside our state. We do care about our livestock and that we are doing the right thing”. The Sew & So’s 4-H club celebrated fifty years of serving the youth of Coshocton County during the 158th county fair. The club is one of the oldest clubs in the area and the original name was “The Needleworking Friends”. Mrs. Louise Passow was the advisor for 32 years and started the club. The club currently has three advisors; Paula Hathaway, Susan Brouse and Betsy Brown. There are twelve youth in the club with each holding an office. There is a $5,000 scholarship that is awarded each year at Coshocton High School in Louise Passow’s name, called The Blue River Scholarship. The Passow couple never had children of their own so they established a series of scholarships that are awarded locally and in each of the couple’s respective hometowns. The club has always been very active in home economics, cooking, sewing, baby-sitting and public speaking. The club has taken field trips to the state capital and according to the current advisors, Louise loved kids. Susan Brouse commented, “She did not have kids of her own – she treated the girls in the club like her own – the girls cooked and sewed at her house”. Karen Erman, who was in the club said about Louise, “If there was a hard way or a more detailed way, Louise had us go the more detailed way. She also helped start the food and fashion board”. Cemeteries can be a pretty creepy place, especially with Halloween approaching. But what some people don’t understand is that cemeteries are actually historical documents ofpeople, a family, and a community. On Saturday, Oct. 11th, Roscoe gave an historical tour of Caldersburg Cemetery, which is located behind the church. The “Sorrow of Stones” tour started at 2 p.m. behind the Roscoe United Methodist Church and was free of charge. Spectators were given a different view of the community’s “forgotten” cemetery. The event started with a brief history of Caldersburg Cemetery, and cemeteries in general. Caldersburg was the original name of Roscoe and was founded by James Calder. The name was changed to Roscoe after a poet bearing the name moved to the community from England. The cemetery itself actually went through many different name changes. The first burial was in 1822 and the last in 1907. The “Sorrow of Stones” name was chosen for the tour because it was a common term given to cemeteries back in the Eerie Canal days. In the older cemeteries, family members placed different symbols, or epitaphs, on their loved ones grave, and each symbol had a different meaning. For example, a weeping willow stood for sorrow, a rose meant the person died in the prime of life, and a handshake symbolized the deceased taking the hand of God.

“Where you can have just about anything printed, except money!”
CalDerSBurg continued from pg 17 a fascinating look into their lives. Unfortunately, the Browns had lost four children to typhoid and influenza and were all buried with their parents. We also met Mr James L Retilley (Chris Hart) who gave us a humorous look into his life story in Roscoe. “I’m hoping people have an understanding of life in canal times and how these people lived, and also of this forgotten cemetery in Roscoe,” said Alice Hoover, who portrayed Lydia Brown. Hours upon hours of research was invested to make this event possible. Alice said she spent months looking up old deeds, court records, church records, among other things. She spent approximately 150 – 175 hours researching, and there were other stories she found about the Browns that, in the interest of time, just could not be shared. “We both really enjoy portraying historical figures, especially during canal times,” said Rev. Dick Hoover, who portrayed Samuel Brown. “I hope the people here today can connect to the people of the past. We are not that much different than they were.” Roscoe is also doing another “spirited” tour on Oct. 16 and 17 for the Halloween season. It will be a look back in time and will portray the life and times of the people of Roscoe back in the 1800s. Reservations are required. The event begins at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $9.95, students are $4.95 and families are $29.95. Visit www.roscoevillage/ history for more information. The Geneology Society is selling a book about the township. The book is $30 and has a lot of information about the cemetery and the Browns, and is full of photos. To purchase a book, contact the Geneology Society at 623-0343. “We wanted to portray a different side of Roscoe,” said Chris Hart, researcher and curator, who also portrayed James Retilley, “These are real folks who lived and died here and we wanted to bring them to life.”
