was recently named as an Academic All-Ohio Athlete by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association for 2011. Bryce was nominated by, then, River View Head Coach, Rod Lindsey. Bryce was the starting varsity catcher for the past three seasons for the Bears. As a full-time post-secondary student, he earned an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from Kent State University, and an Honor’s Diploma from River View, both in May of 2011. Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) invites all members of the community to a public unveiling of a portrait of Coshocton visionaries, the late Edward and Frances Montgomery. The event will be Thursday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Montgomery Hall parlor, COTC Coshocton Campus, 200 North Whitewoman Street. The college commissioned the portrait by local artist Kathy Thomas to honor the Montgomerys’ civic and philanthropic legacy. It was the Montgomerys’ commitment to higher education that laid the foundation for the COTC Coshocton Campus. It was also this remarkable couple’s extraordinary vision that led to the restoration of Roscoe Village. “COTC is a proud partner with the Coshocton community, and will be forever indebted to the hundreds of community residents and business owners who recognized the need for a quality higher education institution in Coshocton,” said COTC President Bonnie L. Coe, Ph.D. Artist Kathy Thomas of The Loft Studio in Zanesville will be present for this community unveiling. The event is free and open to all.

The Coshocton Towne Centre Association extends an invitation to all city and county schools, local businesses, civic organizations and service groups for participation in the Bicentennial Christmas Parade. This parade will be one of the last events celebrating Coshocton’s Bicentennial and the first event kicking off the festivities for the holiday season in Coshocton Towne Centre. The parade is scheduled for Friday evening, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Line up begins at 5 p.m. at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Note this is a new starting point for the parade. The parade will travel north on 7th Street and west on Main Street with disbandment near Stewart Field on Water Street. This is an excellent opportunity to promote your school’s spirit, demonstrate your organization’s service to the community, promote your business and encourage shopping locally or to show everyone just how proud you are that you live in Coshocton. You are encourage to participate as appropriate for the event with floats, motorized or walking units, carolers, etc. All units are requested to have lights and complete the entire parade route. st. John’s to have annual holiday bazaar St. John’s United Church of Christ, located at 808 Orange Street in Coshocton, will have their 39th annual Holiday Bazaar on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The 2011 Bazaar will start at 9 a.m. with baked goods going on sale at that time. Pie and coffee will also be available. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., lunch will be served consisting of sloppy joe’s, coneys, kraut dogs, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, vegetable soup, chicken noodle, and potato soup, potato salad, fruit salad, cake, pie, and beverages. The evening meal will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue until they run out of food. Take-out dinners are available by calling 622-2781. Baked goods and candy will be sold at the Country Store along with homemade mincemeat, noodles, fresh sausage, and vegetable soup. The women of the church get together a few weeks before the bazaar and make the

mincemeat and the soup. This year, Carol Schuler, a member of the church, has donated a double/queen sized “Heart Flower” design quilt with red flowers, green leaves on a light background, to be given away the evening of the bazaar. See any church member for tickets or call the church office at 622-2781. The St. John’s Untied Church of Christ looks forward to again serving the Coshocton resident at their annual bazaar.

Several hundred area high school students and parents attended the annual College Access night event held at the Coshocton County Career Center on Monday, Oct. 10. The event is hosted by the Coshocton C.A.R.E.S. program. Brian Crilow, C.A.R.E.S. program director, said, “We had over sixty schools that said they would be here – between students and parents we will have well over five hundred attend. We try to provide the opportunity to all students in Coshocton County to come and browse around and look at different schools – look at what they are planning to major in and what schools may offer those types of programs and talk directly to the admissions people. We hope that the students benefit from the opportunity to attend. “The support we get for this is wonderful, I have two super advisors; Lynn Hill is our advisor at River View and she’s a real strength to the C.A.R.E.S. program. And new to our team this year is Ellen Fritz. She was the former guidance counselor at Coshocton until her retirement several years ago and she is now the advisor at Coshocton High School and brings a wealth of experience to the program. The students still remember her from when she served there and she is going to be a true attribute. “We’re also very thankful to Mike Cichon and his culinary arts students, they put on a wonderful buffet for the admissions people and it’s kind of a lure to get them to attend. Mr. Reveal, who teaches criminal justice, provides students for security purposes and we’re very grateful to both of those gentlemen and for what they’ve done to help us tonight. We try to work very closely with the area schools making sure that they are well informed of the different programs that we’re offering and it was great to see several of the superintendent’s show up to see what is going on. We are always glad to see them.” Crilow added that he is, “Grateful to the Career Center and especially the janitors who set up – it’s a tremendous task to set up that many tables and get ready for that many colleges. Thank you to them, their staff and their teachers as well.”

Supporters, family members and committee members are asking those that want to know more about – and show support for - Alzheimer’s to join them at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 22 at Kids America for the Coshocton County “Walk to End Alzheimer’s”. Connie Lahna, a member of the committee, said about the event, “We’re going to have lots of different venues, including things for the kids like pumpkin coloring contests, some puzzles and things like that. It’s important that the kids learn to relate to Alzheimer’s because it’s going to be Grandma; it could be mom and dad having this disease. We want the children to understand what is happening with Grandma or what is happening in this situation. We want to bring an awareness of what Alzheimer’s is, it is fund raising but it’s also about awareness. “The proceeds will go to research and support groups for Alzheimer’s, helping families with Alzheimer’s and the different options that are out there for them.” The name of the event has changed from a “Memory Walk” to a “Walk to End Alzheimer’s”. Lahna explained that, “We know that with Alzheimer’s, the memory is fading so we wanted to reflect more on what the goal of the walk is; and that is to find a cure.

While the walk is largely symbolic at the event, friends and family members are urged to attend to show support for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and their families. “We need to walk for those with Alzheimer’s”, said Lahna. Along with entertainment and the auction, Rick Phelps will be the guest speaker. Rick will be very inspirational, as he can relate firsthand what an Alzheimer’s diagnosis feels like. Rick is a young man who has Alzheimer’s and will talk about what he has already experienced and what his family is going through. Lahna added that the event is, “To show support for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. This event would not be possible without the tremendous time and energy from the members of the committee.” “We have worked hard as a committee to raise money locally for Alzheimer’s and this walk. We had a bake sale at Pearl Valley Cheese – they’re always so gracious to help us out – we had a toll booth on Main Street (in the rain), and we had a three day event at Woodbury Outfitters. Woodbury Outfitters was very gracious to help us out and give support to this event. We purchased some items and sold raffle tickets to raise money. Mary Louise Newell and Debbie Arden combined to make a beautiful quilt, and Ralph Myers made the quilt rack that is also being raffled off. We have been and will continue selling raffle tickets on these two items and the drawing will take place on the day of the walk. Each of the committee members in their related facilities is raising money on their own. The community has been very supportive and we are still looking for auction items. Not only can you still submit an auction item personally, or though your place of business, but we hope the area businesses and community will come to bid on these beautiful and practical items. The O.M.E.A. marching band adjudicated event is held each year and River View hosted nine bands this year ranging from Class “AA” Thomas Worthington to Class “C” Fort Frye. In Class “B” Ridgewood High School picked up awards for best auxiliary, best percussion and overall first place in Class B. Coshocton High School earned best outstanding field commander. Conesville Elementary, located at 199 State St. in Conesville is hosting a Fall Harvest Festival on Thursday, Oct. 20 from 6 – 8 p.m. for its students and their families. The Scholastic Book Fair will be set up in the Art Room and be open during the event. Games and Bookmarks will be set up throughout the school building in various classrooms and hallways. To play the games or make a bookmark, the cost will be one ticket. Tickets will be on sale that night. Tickets are five for $1. Candy prizes will be awarded for playing the games. October 12th, 1951 Each Friday during the school year, students at Coshocton High School would have their own page published in the Tribune. Each week would feature various activities or events the students were involved with. For the 1951-52 school year, the English students had chosen Dick Delong to be editor-in-chief for the weekly student page entitled, “The Red and Black”. Joanne Wharton had been named editor of the Coshocton Yearbook, “The Tomahawk”. The class had already been working hard on the 1952 yearbook. They hoped to create a new and different yearbook that year with pages filled with student accomplishments.

October 15th, 1971 The River View FFA had really outdone themselves. Dale Hendrick of the FFA had placed first in the nation in the meat judging contest. All three members of the River View judging team, Jim Rich, John Moran and Hedrick received gold medals at an award banquet, the whole team placing second overall in the nation. The team competed against 34 other teams and Hendricks against 102 other contestants for the awards. The team had been chosen to attend the national convention when they were selected as an outstanding chapter based on a 10-page application and by winning first place at the Ohio State Fair.

October 18th, 1981 Each year, members of the Nellie Chapel and New Castle United Methodist Church planted corn for Friendship Acres and donated the profits to CROP-CWS. But because of a rainy spring, they planted pumpkins that year on June 20 and had recently harvested more than 4,200 pumpkins, each weighing up to 35 pounds. The pumpkins were loaded on trucks to be sold in Coshocton, Zanesville, and Wooster, and would most likely be used as jack-o-lanterns for the upcoming Halloween season. Nearly 700 man hours went into planting and harvesting the crop, not including delivery. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

October 15th, 1961 Sammy Kaye, nationally-known orchestra leader, was planning to purchase the Lake Park Hills golf course and nearby areas for developmental purposes. He and his fellow incorporators planned to improve the golf facilities and build a housing development including a motel, swimming pool, and reserved seating to the Guy Fieri Show, and a recreational areas. Mr. Kaye announced he snack for the ride home. This year was no exception as ten year old Alyssa Lambert and eight year old Michael Lambert from heath are pictured enjoying their lunch at keene United Methodist Church. For a donation you could choose chili, chicken noodle soup, Coney’s, chicken sandwiches, sloppy Joes and your favorite from among several varieties of delicious pie. The kids said they, “Liked the lamb meat, the cows with long horns and the food.” This was their second year of taking the tour. The kids were with Brenda (St. Louisville, oh) and Sarah Lambert (heath, oh). The tour was about 30 miles long and started at Finton equipment with a map and sign-in. Stops included MMS Aviation, Rocky Top Acres, the north Appalachian experimental Watershed, Carson house Farm, keene United Methodist Church, Millcreek Farm, Fenders’ Fish hatchery and Pearl Valley Cheese. character, “I’m not a very nice guy which is a bit of a departure for me. I said when I took this role, “I’ve played not nice guys before but this is the first real “not” nice guy – I’ve always been a funny mean guy before – it’s been a lot of fun, it’s been a good chance to stretch my legs. People will see a different side – a person who is very different from my day to day appearance and my normal personality. It’s been a stretch, it’s a challenge and it’s always good to branch out and stretch your legs as an actor, and try something new. At first I was a bit intimidated but now I’ve found a way to get into the character. It’s been a lot of fun.” Hardesty said he thinks that, “This is a piece of our culture that people need to appreciate. It’s great entertainment, it’s inexpensive entertainment and it helps support the community and the arts and it’s an enjoyable evening out. There are so many things to do in our community like coming to the theater and enjoy an evening out.” Sarah Fornara, who is cast as heiress Elaine Wheeler, said, “My character might have some issues, some difficulty sleeping, and I’m not quite sure why I have these difficulties and I kind of get to bend what’s real and what is not real. My character has a lot of depth, she has a lot of layers to her and so it’s kind of fun exploring those layers but mostly I’m just really enjoying the rest of the cast. They’re a great group to work with and it’s fun to come out here and work with them every night. It’s a great time. “This play will keep people on the edge of their seat the entire time. You’re always guessing and trying to figure things out, it’s very suspenseful, there are a lot of layers to the play to and a lot of twists and turns. You think you’ve got it figured out and something changes and you have to change your perception – you’re not going to get bored.” Renate (Reni) Akers, who is cast as the German maid, Helga, said “My sister’s name is Helga. It’s enjoyable and a bit nerve wracking too, but this is my first time on stage. The first weekend went fine. I think people will be amazed at the outcome; it has so many twists and turns. “I think there is a lot of suspense in this play, you have to think about it, it’s like “Clue”, it’s a good play. It’s very enjoyable. I wish people would come out to support the community and the theater. I have to come to the home and check everything out. This is the first murder mystery I’ve done; it’s a bit of a change compared to my other roles. It’s quite contrasting. I’ve never done a police officer. Each person in the play really could be the murderer – the writer could have just twisted it one little way with all of the information they’ve given you. It’s fun to do the Brooklyn accent – I looked it up on the internet. I think people will enjoy the play.” The play also features Jill Fry and Dan Relic. One of the main reasons to support this co-op is economic; it keeps all of the money that goes into the processing end of food production here in the county.” Shirley Norris, who attended the opening, said, “I see a renovated building that is full of excited people ready to share their talents whether its breads, jams and jellies, homemade soaps, organic things, with the public year round, kind of a continuation of the Farmer’s Market. I’m impressed with the fact that things are as much organic as possible and I’m looking forward to the produce from their greenhouses this winter. “I think people will be impressed with the homegrown things, more and more families have people with allergies and children that may have some sort of issue in school and they are trying to eliminate preservatives in their food so this is the way to go.” Heather Armstrong, who is one of the local vendors, said, “My husband and I are making jams and jellies and fruit butters, we’ll also be offering some different spice mixes and bakery items. It was a great opportunity for us to get started in a farmer’s type market without having a lot of expense and travel involved. October 22nd, 1961 Parents of the 418 students of Coshocton’s newest high school, Three Rivers, would have the chance to meet the teachers and look over the facilities used by their children during Parents Visitation Night. The new high school consolidated the Conesville, Keene, and Roscoe high schools into the Three Rivers High School in the Roscoe building. There were 161 freshmen, 104 sophomores, 85 juniors, and 68 seniors. The enrollment expected to pass the 500 mark within the next three years. Teachers had commented that their working conditions had improved greatly.

1971

October 24th, 1971 Mary Lower of Fresno represented Coshocton County at the 34th annual Poetry Day workshop in Columbus composed of 23 different contests. Mrs. Lowe placed first in the Kathryn Marshall contest with her poem, “Farm Auction”. She also received honorable mention in two other contests for her poems, “Walnut Tree” and “Chicken Lickin’”. She said one of the most unusual contests she had ever entered was a Death Contest where the author could not say any words that had to do with death. So she wrote about a merry-goround and related it to life, saying she never wanted to stop riding the merry-go-round. She was a teacher at River View and had recently published a book of all of her poems.

1981

October 23rd, 1981 Magic Holiday Fantasy, a national touring production, was to appear in Coshocton at the end of October and was being sponsored by the Coshocton Music Boosters. Don Rinehart, president of the boosters, said it was an attempt to bring clean, wholesome family fun to the area. The show was now in its 10th annual tour and would feature illusions, jugglers, acrobats, balancers, aerial stars, and trained animals. Tickets were $2.75 each. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.

October 24th, 1951 Four members of Boy Scout Troop 4 were presented with their Eagle Scout emblems at the Salvation Army. The boys were Bob Powers, Carl Shutt, Ralph Levell, and William Dile. These boys were the first in Troop 4 to earn their Eagle Scout. M.D. Custer, member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army and the Coshocton Kiwanis Club, co-sponsors of the troop, presented the foursome with their award. Life Scout pins were also awarded to Gary Jameson and the Star Scout pins were awarded to Raymond Maguire and Billy Andrews. William Brown was awarded his Tenderfoot badge and four members received their first class pins.
