on their playoff victories and an extremely successful season to boot. You will find a poster printed inside this edition of The Beacon that you can display in your home, vehicle, business or on the wall. The Beacon is proud to support all of our area youth regardless of their pursuits. Good Luck Redskins and Generals this weekend! Speaking of our area youth, I was disappointed that the OSU Extension Levy failed. This sends a not so positive message to the youngsters in our community – yes, we realize that the passage would have meant additional taxes – and hopefully that is the only reason it did not pass. The staff at the OSU Extension office work very hard and long hours to ensure that our youth have the opportunities to learn and grow in many ways. And not all of the programs are geared toward the youth – with the Master Gardeners, nutrition and other assistance offered by the Extension office. And I would not dare to compare state issue 3 on casinos to this – because the voters in Coshocton County turned that one down. I know that not everyone agreed with our stance – and that is the way it should be. Why? Our veterans sacrificed in blood so that we can vote, speak and express our personal opinion in this country. Thank God for that right. Let’s all remember that this Wednesday, November 11, the day that most of you receive your Beacon, is Veteran’s Day. Please take a few moments from your busy schedule to reflect on the courage, patriotism, bravery and sacrifice that so many men and women in our country have given so that we can live free. And let’s also remember that we are still a country at war with thousands of young men and women putting their lives on the line for us. Be sure to thank a veteran this week. Regardless of our political opinion, our men and women in uniform don’t get that choice. They go where sent when ordered. Let’s keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Your Family

For over 60 years, the Kiwanis Club has been a part of Coshocton County and has been serving pancakes to the community for just as long. Every year, the Thursday after Election Day, the Kiwanis Club serves pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee to the community. The main goal of the Kiwanis Club is to serve the children of the world. The Pancake Day is the largest fundraiser Kiwanis has all year and all the money made goes toward sponsoring the Special Education Olympics, Dollars for Scholars, HOBY (Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership), Presidential Classroom in Washington D.C., and many other local groups whose goal is to benefit children. This year, Pancake Day was Thursday, Nov. 5 at Roberta’s Catering. “Keith and Roberta have made this event run so smoothly,” said Belinda Williamson, Pancake Chairwoman, “They have been doing a wonderful job helping us. If we were left on our own, I would be a little fearful, but we get a little better at this every year.” The doors were open at 6 a.m. on Thursday morning and the last pancake was served at 7 p.m. that night. A total of 35 10lbs bags of pancake mix were used throughout the day. Kiwanis also has a group of younger members called the Key Club, which consists of 40 Coshocton high school students who were there to help out for the day. “We would not be able to have this event without them,” said Williamson, “They help so much just

The Coshocton County Senior Center recognized area veterans and their spouses at a special luncheon and ceremony on Monday, Nov. 9 at the facility on Brown’s Lane. Senior Director Jamie Thomas announced the branch of service and each veterans name while they were presented with a token of appreciation. Thomas told the veterans, “This is a small token of our appreciation and we want to honor and recognize you for your service”. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer, Edwin Lee sang and led the group in a patriotic rendition of “God Bless America”. The veterans, spouses and seniors enjoyed a meal of meatloaf, corn, rolls and butter, mashed potatoes, fruit and a special treat of ice cream bars.

Individual Kiwanis members sponsored each class. A lot of people in the community have been involved in Kiwanis for many years. Ed Gehrke has been involved for 25 years and this year marked his last pancake day with Kiwanis. Tom Leech, retired attorney, has been a member for over 60 years and is one of the original members, and John McPeek has been a member for 45 years and is a past president of the club. “The best memory that stands out to me is just the many things we have accomplished throughout the community,” said McPeek, “I have to give credit to Clancy and Grace Miller, who are both deceased, because they left a very substantial sum of money to Kiwanis. Earnings from that are spent annually in the community and through scholarships.” McPeek remembers when Kiwanis had over 90 members. Today, the Club has around 60. He says that Kiwanis is very important to the community, especially to newcomers. “I think this club would be a value to newcomers in the community because they can become acquainted with other people in the community,” said McPeek. The Kiwanis Pancake Day truly is a longstanding tradition in Coshocton County. According to Williamson, back in the 1940s, Aunt Jemima herself came to sample some good old-fashioned homemade

pancakes. The pancakes are still just as good today. “It’s become a tradition they all look forward to, kind of like the fair,” said Williamson, “I remember coming to Kiwanis Pancake Day when I was a kid.” “We have a great turnout every year,” said Jerry Stenner, “I’d like to thank the citizens of Coshocton County for all of their support because the money we raise goes toward helping children in the community. All our works go toward the children and that’s our focus.”

There are a few important corrections that need to be made in the previous H1N1 article that ran in the Wednesday, Nov. 4 issue of the Beacon. Children age 6 months to 2 years, women who are pregnant and people with certain types of chronic illnesses SHOULD receive the H1N1 vaccine in the form of a flu shot. They should NOT receive the vaccine in the form of the nasal spray. To prevent spreading the virus, wash hands in plenty of soap and water, or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Lastly, the Coshocton County and City Health Departments sponsored the H1N1 clinic at the Career Center. The Beacon apologizes for the error.

On Saturday, November 21, the second annual Armed Services Ball will be held at the Ohio Army National Guard Readiness Center (The Armory) located at 24680 Airport Road in Coshocton. The event is sponsored by the Coshocton County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Jen Fannin is the director of the Coshocton Red Cross. She says the event was a great success last year and they are looking for an even greater event this year. “The community really supported this fundraiser last November and everyone enjoyed it so much,” she said. “We are excited to have it again this year.” Fannin says the ball is open to anyone and any age to attend. “One of the big questions we’ve been getting is whether people have to dress up to come,” said Fannin. “Even though it’s called a ‘ball’ formal dress is not required. Last year people were in attendance dressed in anything from jeans to formal wear.” Fannin says the ball includes a social hour, dinner catered by CCMH, 50/50 drawing, the Lake Park Big Band for dancing, followed by a DJ later in the evening for more dancing. “Last year we had a full crowd, not an empty seat,” she said. “We had quite a few people dancing.” “We will have the Armory decked out like you wouldn’t believe,” Fannin continued. “We have lots of flags that were donated by Annin last year and we put them up all through the room for a complete Americana décor. Plus, several people bring memorabilia from a variety of wars, so there are lots of things to look at as well.” Fannin says that all the funds raised from the ball and 50/50 support the Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces. “The Red Cross is the official emergency communication link from the soldier to their family back home,” she stated. “The Red Cross also provides other services for those in the military including mental health services and financial assistance. We are available 24 hours a day.” “This ball is to honor all those who have served, are serving and for those who will serve in the future in the armed services,” said Fannin. “That is the main reason we chose to have it in November in honor of Veterans’ Day. We really encourage veterans and their families to attend. It was so interesting last year. We had several veterans there sharing their stories and how the Red Cross had been there for them and their families.” Fannin explains that the Red Cross’ slogan ‘Get to know us before you need us’, is another good

their annual litter sweep along the Muskingum River in October. Approximately one pick up load of litter was collected. Members of the club covered the City of Coshocton boat ramp, the Baird access area, along the West side of the river near Three Rivers bridge, and at other river fishing locations. Three Rivers Bassmasters is a local bass fishing club that is affiliated with the Ohio Bass Federation Nation and the Bass Anglers Sportsman’s Society, (B.A.S.S.) The litter sweep was coordinated with the Coshocton County Recycling and Litter Prevention Office. That office provided gloves, trash bags, and removal of the collected litter. phOTO CONTRiBuTed TO The

Crafts, blankets, pies, noodles, jams and other festive creations were displayed at this year’s 28th annual holiday bazaar at the Conesville United Methodist Church on Thursday, Nov. 5. The church has a craft group that meets twice a month and makes projects especially for this event. “This is such a bond for everyone in the congregation,” said Zoe Worthington, cochairwoman of the bazaar, “We all work together and it’s important fellowship.” This year, 186 lbs of flour and 66 dozen eggs were used to make noodles. Eighteen people volunteered their time this year to help make the noodles. The church also makes its own mincemeat, homemade pies, cakes and jams and jellies. All the money raised at the event goes into the general fund and helps pay for the upkeep of the church. Apparently, the bazaar is not only famous in Conesville, but throughout the whole state of Ohio. One person travels all the way from Cleveland just to buy some noodles for Thanksgiving dinner and another comes from Columbus to buy the homemade jelly. “A lot of work goes into this bazaar, but it’s great fellowship,” said Marilyn Fuller, co-chairwoman of the event. “People really enjoy this every year.”

Scouts in front are; Jacob patterson, Chris Aronhalt and brothers Collier and Gerik Snow. patterson’s cake, designed as an eagle, was selected as both the “Best Overall” and the “Best Scout Theme” cake. Jacob said, “i got the idea from my dad. i was excited to win!” Chris Aronhalt, whose cake won the “Best Space Theme”, had a cake designed as Apollo 11. Chris explained that he went with the Apollo because, “the theme was space”. Collier and Gerik Snow, who had the tallest cake (about as tall as the younger brother!) said that the most fun was, “Cracking the eggs and taking the yolk out. it took us two days to make the cake”. Their cake was purchased by Grandma Sharon and Great-grandparents Bill and imogene Bush. BeACON phOTO By MARk FORTuNe Cub Scout Pack 438 held their annual “Fellers” cake auction on Friday evening at the Coshocton County Career Center with local auctioneer Ryan LePage donating his time and energy for the auction. The goal of the Fellers cake auction is for the boys – who are in first through fifth grade – to work with their Dads or a male figure in their lives to make the cake. Cub Master Shanda Huston said, “We’ve always had this at our annual blue and gold banquet but it has gotten too large for that event so we decided to try the auction this way. The money goes into each scout’s individual account – they can use it for items purchased at the scout store, field trips, scout camp, uniforms, etc. We have 29 cakes here this year to auction and our committee has done a great job of organizing the event. We have kids from Conesville, Keene, Warsaw and the city of Coshocton in our pack. We really appreciate Ryan donating his time and for coming out to help us here tonight”. Prior to the cake auction, each person in attendance had the opportunity to vote for the tallest cake, best cake overall, best scout theme and best themed cake. This year’s theme was space with several cakes taking on a spaceship design while others were more traditional, with green grass, rivers, lakes and more. Regardless of the design, the boys were all enthusiastic in selling their cakes to aunts, uncles, friends, grandparents, great-grandparents and moms and dads. Cub Scout Pack 438 is chartered at and meets at Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church.
local election responses
The Eastern part of the county was not without anticipation and excitement on Election Day. In the village of West Lafayette and surrounding townships, voters were deciding upon school board officials, township trustees, fire protection, village operating expenses and state issues, as well as the Coshocton County OSU extension levy. Election Day presiding judge for West Lafayette, Christie Patterson, says the day went smoothly with all voters now centralized in one location at the First Baptist Church. “Now that we have combined North and South, we have had a good turn-out,” says Patterson. “It’s been working well, and we have had constant traffic all day.” Wanda Unger, presiding judge for Lafayette Township said besides being busy, “things have been really smooth,” (with the combined districts), it’s worked out very well.” Patterson thinks the state issues and the races for township trustees were part of the reasons for good voter turn -out. As promised, the state issues were popular for local voters. Rob and Angela Euton of West Lafayette turned out just to vote primarily on them. “That is why I came to vote,” said Rob, “It’s a big deal to us.” The Euton’s are talking about Issue #3, the state constitutional amendment about legalization of gambling and Ohio casinos in cities such Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo. Angela says, “We think it’s a good thing, people are always going out of town so we might as well have the money come to us (in Ohio).” Shirley Wiseman of Lafayette Township says, “I voted for the casinos because I like to go gamble,” she says. I have Lou Gehrig’s disease, and if we get one closer to home I can make that trip.” Mike Williams of Lafayette Township had indifferent feelings on the state issue 3. “I don’t believe in gambling, but in these economic times it will help nowadays, and the schools can only stand to benefit from it.” State issue 3 was defeated in Coshocton County, 48.50 % to 51.50 %. A good deal of voters from outlying townships had an interest in state issue 2, which would create a 13 member board governing livestock standards. That issue passed locally with 8091 voters says YES for 73.68% and 2891 people casting NO at 26.32%. Wiseman and her family have been raising cattle in the county for 80 years. She says there are good and bad components of the implementation, “but I hope it helps save some of the farmers in our area right now.” Williams says he is an animal- rights activist and that it’s good to keep an eye on the livestock and poultry.” Williams says there will now be a “watch-dog and stiffer laws.” Jackie Wiggins lives in White Eyes Township. Her family raises goats, horses, and other animals. She says “I would rather a board be making decisions rather than PETA fanatics governing our farms.” John and Tammy Johns own a wean -to -finish swine operation in which a big part of their income is raising breeding gilts. Tammy says that the passage of Issue 2, “Is a step in the right direction,” but she hopes “it is enough to take on the big powers of HSUS and their upcoming ballot issues.” The Ohioans for Livestock Care Political Action Committee (PAC) released the following statement in response to the passage of State Issue 2. “Ohioans have spoken and clearly understand that a board of experts is the appropriate entity to make decisions on behalf of animal agriculture and food production in our state. Passage of Issue 2 is a win for everyone who acknowledges the essential relationship between excellent farm animal care and a safe, affordable, locally grown food supply. Voters agree with Ohio’s farm community and our diverse base of supporters decisions about food and farming should be made in Ohio, by Ohioans. Knowing that the issue is about conditions of livestock, Tammy says, “My pigs have a good life and are healthy… I also want to eat healthy food.” A bit closer to home were some concerns about the continuation of the Junior Fair Board through County 4-H of the OSU extension Office, the village operations in West Lafayette, and a replacement of expiring levies for the West Lafayette Fire Department. Sarah Jane Lindsey with OSU Extension says “For the services it brings to the county for agriculture, the community, and the youth…it’s a great investment.” The levy however, was defeated county-wide, 43.37% to 56.63%. The extension office and the County 4-H program served more than 870 youth this year. Lindsey says in 2009 the funding cuts from the ARTICLE CONTINUES ON PAGE 16.........

A big part of extension office is the youth programs offered by 4-H which is imbedded in the Junior Fair Schedule of the Coshocton County Fair. OSU Extension levy committee member Jim Overshot says the fair will go on, but maybe in a different way. “The county fair won’t go away, but it (the result) would change it,” says Overholt. “We are at the county commissioner’s mercy when it (the levy) doesn’t pass.”

Kelly says though the OSU extension levy option was in her opinion a bit high, “My kids need 4-H and would be bored (without it).” Fire protection for the township and village will continue to be an added service with the support of the voters, 74.16% to 25.84%. The 1 mill levy replaces a .25 mill and .75 mills which both were expiring. Fire Chief Gaylord Hill says, “People expect us to be there, and we need them to support us.” Voter Mike Williams says he appreciates the help and, “You always support your fire department.” West Lafayette Fire Captain Chad Hains says passage

of the levy will, “help continue the same level of quality service” for residents. Children seemed to be at the heart of county voters as the Coshocton County Children Services levy passed, 62.53% to 37.47%. Francie Shuck, of Precious Treasures Day Care in West Lafayette, says the passage “helps those kids in unfortunate situations…anything that supports children I’m in favor of.” Overall, Eastern County voters were in favor of county-wide and township issues with passage of all options on the ballot.
