the First Baptist Church in West Lafayette when the Soul’d Out Quartet makes their appearance. The Soul’d Out Quartet is based out of Georgetown, Ohio and is a group of five young men who write and perform gospel music. They sing everything from contemporary Christian music to old hymns passed down through the generations. The quartet is returning due to overwhelming requests from last year’s performance. It will be a free concert with a love offering to be taken during the event that will go toward helping the

mission auto nominated for Quality dealer of the year
Les Revennaugh, owner of Mission Auto Connection located at 44672 US 36 in Coshocton, Ohio has been nominated for Quality Dealer of the Year for the State of Ohio. Every year, the Ohio Independent Automobile Dealers Association (OIADA) accepts nominations from individuals honoring their choice of Independent Automobile Dealers to compete for the honorary title of Quality Dealer of the Year. Although there are many nominated, few are chosen and only one dealer will be named Quality Dealer of the year for the state of Ohio. To be nominated for this coveted title is a high honor for Mr. Revennaugh as there are more than 5,250 dealers in contention throughout Ohio. Nominations are received by the OIADA throughout the year and the separation process begins. Only nominees who have displayed a career of professionalism, financial stability, support of their community and dedication to their church are considered and Les Revennaugh is one of the three finalists who will compete for this award. A selection committee, including the previous years’ winner, will decide which of the finalists are chosen to receive the award. The committee members
submit their individual ballots to the OIADA by Nov. 15 where the votes are tallied and the final selection is decided. All of the nominees will be honored on Dec. 3 at the OIADA Annual Awards Banquet, which will be at the Conference Center at Northpoint in Lewis Center, Ohio and the name of the Quality Dealer of the Year will be revealed. The dealer who is chosen will represent Ohio and the OIADA at an annual convention conducted by the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NIADA) in June of 2012 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, NV where they will compete against all the other state award winners from around the country for the title of National Quality Dealer of the Year. The OIADA, located at 2040 Brice Road in Reynoldsburg, Ohio was chartered as a nonprofit corporation in 1985 under the acronym of ADAO or the Automobile Dealer Alliance of Ohio. It was renamed in 2004 to the more universal OIADA to conform as an affiliate of the NIADA located in Arlington, TX. The Ohio Quality Dealer of the Year program is an honorary award dedicated to one of the late founders of the OIADA and its first Executive Director, Mr. Jack Denney.

November 24th, 1951 The Roscoe Tigers opened their 1951- 52 basketball season with a crushing victory over Adamsville. The Tigers started out strong with a 23 – 9 lead in the first quarter and never faltered. Center Keith Whitaker racked up 16 points for the Tigers. However, the scoring honors in the game went to Ken McNeish from the opposing team. But that fact didn’t affect Roscoe’s performance as they went on to win it with a 60 – 47 final score. It was a good night all around for Roscoe as the seventh and eighth grade team also defeated Adamsville with a final score of 45-22.

November 29th, 1961 The 1961 – 62 school year marked the last time Coshocton would participate in the AllCentral Ohio league football team, and since Coshocton hadn’t won a COL game, it was more than impressive that three Redskins had been selected to be among the 20 other athletes in central Ohio. Gary Jones, William Stoner, and Richard Walsh had been chosen by the sports writers of the circuit to the annual honor team. This was the second year Jones had been chosen, and all three were named to the defensive unit.

November 27th, 1971 It’s Christmas time in Roscoe Village and “Christmas by Candlelight” promised to be yet another old-fashioned special Christmas for visitors to the village. The tree was scheduled to light on Dec. 11 followed by the lighting of hundreds of candles throughout the village. The decorations had been chosen to recapture the spirit of Christmas at eventide during the 1800s. After the lighting of the tree, visitors could take a ride on a bobsled, visit Santa’s sleigh outside the Olde Warehouse Restaurant, or stroll through the village as carolers dressed in period costumes sang oldfashioned Christmas carols. Throughout the holiday season, carolers as well as sleigh bells were heard throughout the village.

The Coshocton Footlight Players will be presenting the comedy “The Kitchen Witches” over the next three weekends at the Triple Locks Theater. Shelly Lillibridge, cast in the role of Dolly Biddle, has her own cooking show, but, in the words of Lillibridge, “It is tragically coming to an end, or so she thinks. And things happen to make it not so. I enjoy the costumes, the sarcasm, and the fun, of this character. This play is non-stop comedy, there’s always something happening, it’s a busy set. Every character brings something to the table; it’s a nice story that rolls into a nice heartwarming Christmas.” Dana Kittner, who is cast in the role of Isobel Lomax, “Busy Izzy”, said, “My character is named “Busy Izzy” for a reason. She likes to get her nose into other people’s business.” Kittner was in a Christmas play a couple of years ago at the Triple Locks Theater as a Scrooge character.

He’s in a program called, “Keep our kids off the street program”, and that’s the only reason he’s here doing the camera, so he’s not in prison or juvenile or wherever it is he would be if he wasn’t in the show.” Asked if the character bore any similarities to himself in real life, Boffo chuckled and said, “Well, in high school I did dress a lot like the part but other than that, I wasn’t really mentally like this character.” “This character is a challenge for me because there’s not a lot of speaking parts, so therefore I kind of have to build the character all by myself; I have to breathe life into the character all by myself and kind of figure out how he would react to what they’re talking about.”

November 23rd, 1981 Hopewell Schools received some good news from members of the Ohio General Assembly when a capitol improvements bill, containing 1.7 million dollars for a new school building, was passed. Assistant Superintendent Rick Edmonds said the new Hopewell School would probably begin construction after all operating budget problems were solved. The state’s capitol improvements bill originally excluded funding for a Hopewell School, but thanks to a State Representative from New Philadelphia and Coshocton, that changed. Edmonds said he planned to write to both thanking them for their generosity.

A pair of local concerned citizens is the energy behind the effort to keep Peebles on Main Street following reports that the company may be seeking to relocate to the Wal-Mart shopping center. Cheryl Cooksey, a Realtor with Real Living The Right Choice, and Sam Wereb, a local web developer, have joined together to keep the downtown vibrant. One of the keys to the campaign is in form of emerging technology, QR codes, or Quick Response. You’ve no doubt seen these small boxes that combine patterns of black and white squares that allow you to “quick link” to a website with your mobile phone. Large retailers and Fortune 500 companies are using the technology in their printed inserts, mailers, print ads and in their stores. The effort to retain Peebles is linked to this technology with 45 decals that have been placed in Main Street store windows by merchants. Wereb explains, “A quick response is a square, a two dimensional bar code that has binary encryption in it that encrypts letters or numerals. The ones you see on the decal in the windows contain encryption for a phone to read a website address, in this case its www. mainstreet43812.mobi. Using the QR code makes it easier for someone to scan that and go

Any type of barcode would work but this is the format used. They were actually invented by Toyota or a Toyota subsidiary back in the early 1990’s so it is not new. It was used to track all the parts and inventory. Cooksey explained that she is currently using the technology in her Homes & More real estate magazine advertising. (Homes & More is published monthly by Good Fortune Advertising LLC, the publishers of The Coshocton County Beacon, which can be accessed by scanning the QR code located in the upper left of the front page). “If you scan the code it will bring up every listing that I have”, said Cooksey. Cooksey said about her initiative to focus on keeping Peebles on Main Street, “I became aware of this about three weeks ago and my first inclination was to do a letter writing drive. But when thinking about it, I realized that everyone is busy, everyone else is busy, it’s going to get lost, and you’re going to forget. So I thought, it’s probably going to be easier to stick a petition under someone’s nose and say, “Hey, we’re trying to keep Peebles on Main Street, would you sign it.” We’re having a lot of success in that. I had a phone call from a business on Main Street last week who said, “Hey, can you bring me a new petition, this one’s full, can you bring me another one.” “We’re getting good response from that, Sam has helped tremendously in setting up this mobile website, we’re getting some letter from merchants’ downtown. When you go to the website, you can email your support, you can put your phone number, your email address, and you send them a message. We have some merchants who have done this, that are strongly encouraging them to stay on Main Street. We want more of

We’ve got to keep the small businesses on Main Street and once they start to come back and start to show success, you’re going to see your bigger corporations start to pull jobs back to this country, but it’s going to take the small business people.” Wereb added, “We’re using the web to make this petition drive more effective. Those who can’t make it to the stores in the downtown district can sign it online. Peebles is free to operate their business however they like, but as Coshocton business people we cannot have another vacant building on Main Street. We want a stabilized downtown. The most salient thing that we are trying to show them (Peebles) is that they do not have a parking problem, it is entirely imaginary, and that they have more support for their store at its current location than they think. Senior citizens in Coshocton County had the opportunity to browse the 37 different vendors at the 19th annual Senior Expo hosted by the Coshocton Village Inn and Suites. In 2010, this expo was a huge success with over 500 visitors. This year, the expo easily topped that number with 260 visitors within the first couple of hours. Senior county residents went from table to table collecting brochures, free samples, and learned about the benefits each vendor had to offer local senior citizens. “It’s to provide an opportunity for seniors to have one place to go where it doesn’t cost them anything to get in and they can find the opportunity to visit with different businesses that provide services and products for people of the 50 and over range,” said Tom Thompson, sales manager for WTNS. members learn their music through listening to mp3 files, learning their music by ear, large-print music for those who can use it, Braille music sheets, and through the computer by using Smart Music, where students can send their recorded music to Director Dan Kelley and he can hear and grade their progress. The band began in 2005 and is composed of about 20 students who are either blind or in some way visually impaired. Before their concert at Hopewell began, Mayor Steven Mercer presented Director Dan Kelley with two lapel pins, one with Coshocton’s City flag printed on it. Throughout their concert, the band played about 10 songs including, ‘Dynamite’, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’, ‘Hey, Jude’, ‘Let it Be’, ‘Eye of the Tiger’, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’, and ended their concert with the Ohio State Fight Song. Director Kelley said that the band practices marching with the Ohio State University band leaders. Director Kelley said that instead of spelling out the word, ‘Ohio’ in script on the field when they often perform for the Ohio School for the Deaf, they spell out ‘Ohio’ in Braille. Bob Nicholson, who works at Hopewell, has a son, Reed, who plays in the band. “Reed became involved two years ago, and this band has given him more pleasure and a feeling of belonging than I have ever seen in his life,” he said. “He has met life-long friends and has given him a skill. Before this, he had never played an instrument besides the piano, but never played an actual wind instrument. To actually see him do it and to work with the other members is giving him tremendous self-esteem. Rediscover the meaning of christmas through music at the annual community choir concert
‘Come to the Stable’ is the theme of the Coshocton Community Choir’s Festival Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Over 200 musicians from throughout central Ohio will weave together the Christmas Story at Coshocton High School’s McKinley Auditorium. Musical selections during the 90-minute concert span the centuries as the choirs, under the direction of Charles R. Snyder, perform a mix of sacred and secular choral music. Snyder says the crèche was his inspiration for the Christmas Festival concert this year. “Most churches and many families have a crèche to help remind the family of the Christmas story,” he said. “In a way, these yearly concerts are like that, reminding the community of that story. Donning mufflers and mittens, they step from the shops or the restaurants into the crisp December evening air. Volunteers distribute candles to everyone in attendance. Guests enjoy an enchanting story, Christmas carols and at last, the lighting of the tree.

Then, in the silence of the night, the honorary candle lighter begins to pass the flame first to the choir and then to the audience. As each individual receives their flame from someone near them, they pass their flame along by lighting a neighbor’s candle and begin singing the first verse of Silent Night. As the light from the candles grows, so grows the music until all the candles are lit and everyone has joined in song. The candlelighting ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3, 10, and 17 and are free to the public. It’s that time of the year when people usually start their holiday shopping. While many people will be out on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, to buy just the right gift for family and friends, there’s another movement that started last year called Small Business Saturday where people are encouraged to go out in their communities the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year and shop locally at small businesses, boosting the local economy. “The best way that we can be sure that our small businesses thrive is by shopping at our small businesses, especially on Small Business Saturday,” said Carol Remington, Executive Director of the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce. Don’t forget that many small businesses in Coshocton County support other local organizations as well, so by shopping local, you’re also supporting other organizations in the county. “When one shops locally, they not only have the experience about supporting local businesses, but that local business will be shopping at other local businesses, and supporting local sports’ teams, and local events,” said Jim McClure, Executive Director of Roscoe Village. “It’s a win-win situation when one supports local businesses.” Small Business Saturday is always the Saturday after Thanksgiving, this year being Nov. 26. On Sunday, Nov. 27 from 1 – 4 p.m., there will be a unique opportunity to visit and tour Frederickson Manor at 905 Cambridge Road in Coshocton during their Holiday Open House. The event is a celebration of the season, with area businesses showcasing holiday decorating ideas. Participating businesses include The Unusual Junction, Kiefer Florist, The Warehouse Steak N Stein, Canal Cargo, Roscoe General Store, Roma’s Gifts & Florist, House of GA Fisher, Medbery Marketplace, Liberty House, Linnet’s Flowers on the Square and more. Admission is $5 per person, with proceeds being donated to Coshocton Firefighters Toy Chest. Frederickson Manor was a home built in 1929 for Mr. Charles Frederickson, owner of the American Art Works in Coshocton, which specialized in the making of Coca-Cola trays. forTune Santa arrived in grand style atop a Coshocton City fire department ladder truck to the delight of children young and old on Friday night, Nov. 18. The Bicentennial Christmas Parade drew thousands of people downtown and had a record number of parade participants. The parade is sponsored each year by the Towne Centre Association. Hot chocolate and cookies were served by friendly volunteers to hundreds at the Courtsquare and Coshocton Christian Tabernacle youth handed out popcorn balls that were sponsored by Wood Forest Bank along the parade route. Preston Dodd (4) and Alyah Allen (6) were looking forward to the parade. Preston was looking forward to seeing Santa while Alyah was waiting to see her friend Emily, who was going to be in the parade.

lions minstrel show all wet
The 54th annual Warsaw Lions Minstrel Show, “Water Time” held in the auditorium at River View High School this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday, provided lots of smiles, jokes and laughter. Directed by Jean Haumschild and with the ever popular Jim Bartlett as Interlocutor, the annual minstrel show raises funds for Lions Club projects throughout the community. Members of the River View Park Board served food prior to the shows to raise funds for the Warsaw Park. Dave “Bones” Woodmansee, a long time Warsaw Lions Club member, said, “I really enjoy working with the people, working with the community and seeing them all work together because they do such a nice job. Our directors are fine, fine people, they’ve brought the best talent to bear for this show. The sense of humor is appropriate, it balances everything out and it’s just a good fun time for family and friends to get out and enjoy.” When asked about some of the talent that typically fills the stage each year, Woodmansee said, “I think a lot of people enjoy coming back to their community and being able to share with their community, even if they’ve been able to
have me.” Gary Kilpatrick, current President of the Warsaw Lions Club, said, “This is a fun thing to do. The biggest thing is making the people in the audience happy. We just want people to have a good time.” Ruth Mason, who was packaging cookies along with Betty Fry, said, “We are head of candy sales and baked items, available before the show and in between. We’ve been doing this for thirty some years, as Lioness and combined with the Lions.” If you missed this year’s show, here is just one fine example of a joke from one of The End Men, in this case, Fred “Choo Choo” Wachtel, “My wife’s credit card got stolen this summer.

Three women recently completed the Business and Professional Women (BPW) Individual Development Program (IDP) on Nov. 19. Graduates were (l-r) Mary Mason, Agents Realty and Auction Service; Lena Stubbs, The Coshocton Yard; and Tracey Vlahos, Primrose Retirement Communities of Zanesville. Each was presented a certificate of completion, which included 1.4 CEUs, and are eligible to compete in the local Individual Development Speak Off Competition in January 2012. The 14-hour course included modules on BPW, Behavioral Styles, Creating and Presenting Presentations, Networking, Interviewing, Negotiating, Leadership Skills, Parliamentary Procedure, Business Etiquette, Legislation, and Media Relations. Facilitators for the course were Marilyn Lauvray, Tomma Bordenkircher and Liz Herrell. BPW promotes equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information. Moore lives in Mansfield, Ohio, and describes himself as a person of ‘mixed blood’. His father is of Native American decent of the Melungeon (Mel-un-Juhn) tribe, which was part of the Eastern Woodland Indians. “Because of my Native American background and knowledge of the culture, I have had the opportunity to be in several films on both the History Channel and A&E,” he said. “Most recently, I was involved in the PBS mini-series, ‘The War that Made America’, where I played Chief Hendrick of the Mohawks.” Locally, Moore is known for his silversmithing skills and for his jewelry, which is sold at Liberty House. Becky Lowe, owner of Liberty House says she is thrilled to have Roger Moore’s items in her store. “He makes beautiful handmade copper and silver jewelry that has been very popular in the store,” she said. “I like to carry Ohio and locally-made items with this kind of high artistic value. J & J Refuse, the City’s contracted trash hauler, will not run on Thursday, Nov. 24. Trash pick-up scheduled for Thursday will be on Friday and trash pick-up scheduled for Friday will be on Saturday. Seasonal Flu Vaccines. The clinics at the County Health Department will be giving flu vaccines on Nov. 23, 28, and 30 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. For adults 18 and over, the vaccine costs $25. Christmas Caroling. Isleta United Methodist Church invites the community to an evening of food, Christmas caroling, and fellowship on Sunday, Nov. 27. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. and there will be ‘old fashioned’ Christmas caroling on a hay wagon at 6 p.m. throughout the Isleta neighborhood, weather permitting. There will be hot chocolate and cookies following the hay ride and all families attending will receive an Advent wreath and Advent devotional.
HEAP Applications Available. Applications are available at the Coshocton Senior Center for the Home Energy Assistance Program. HEAP is a federally funded program designed to help eligible Ohioans meet their winter heating costs. Assistance is available at the Center or for those unable to stop in, an in-home visit can be scheduled.
