Teachers Rock! The United Way Campaign for the Common Good mobilizes millions of people and organizations across the country to take action and improve the education, income and health of America’s communities. The national campaign continues with a focus on education and an ambitious goal to cut the high school dropout rate in half by 2018. Every day, in communities across the country, America’s teachers put their hearts and souls into the important work of educating young people. We believe they deserve the encouragement, support and training they need to be great teachers. United Way Worldwide is inviting people of all ages to share a story about a teacher who changed their life. These stories will be shared with partners at the local, state and national level to send a strong message of support for educators across the country who need our help right now. The future of our country depends on it. To submit a teacher for recognition, please fill out the form at http://liveunited.org/page/s/teachers-rock We invite you to LIVE UNITED by helping America’s youth succeed in school and life. Please consider making a donation to United Way of Coshocton County to ensure that programs and initiatives which support the education of our youth can continue to be offered in Coshocton County. Historic Roscoe Village held their annual recognition dinner for volunteers on Sunday, Nov. 14 with a dinner at The Warehouse Steak ‘n Stein. 31 Roscoe Village volunteer members, eleven friends of Roscoe Village and three friend organizations dedicated a total of 1,666.75 hours of service to Roscoe Village. The invocation was given by the Reverend Philip Hunt of the Central Christian Church. Jim McClure, executive director of Roscoe Village remarked, “We couldn’t operate the village without our volunteers. We appreciate all of our volunteers, from those that give one hour to those that give 200 hours. You’re all specific in what you do”. The evening was organized by volunteer coordinator Rolanda Hunt, who said to the volunteers, “You play a key role here in the village”. The phrase keyed in on the fact that the village blacksmith provided a specially crafted key ring for the event. 10 individuals met the criteria to become Roscoe Village volunteers; Pam Anderson, Karma Chaney, Deborah Crowdy, Carol Hadrosky, Chris Hart, Judy Holz, Sharon Hunter, Jan Kinder, Emily Klesner and Marlyce Parker. Volunteers of Merit for 2010 were also named; Carol Guthrie, Carol Hadrosky, Jim Jones, Jayne McClure and Betsi Newman with 50-74 hours, SuAnn Duda and Edna Jones with 75-99 hours
and Ann Baker, Wilma Hunt, Emily Klesner, Phyllis Rice, Sharon Rice and Ada Wagner with 100 or more hours. Those names will be on a sign that is displayed in the Visitor’s Center. It is also a custom to recognize a volunteer once they have accumulated a total of 100 hours of service. Four volunteers were recognized at this year’s ceremony; Wilma Hunt, Emily Klesner, Betsi Newman and Sharon Rice. Ada Wagner was recognized for the most volunteer hours recorded during the 2009-2010 season with 144 hours and 45 minutes of time. Wagner spent most of that time piecing the top for this year’s quilt and quilting, quilting, quilting! It is also a tradition to recognize the volunteer with the most accumulated volunteer hours. A volunteer since 1983, Natalie Ott was honored for a total of 3,284 hours volunteered for Roscoe Village. In addition to assisting with selected landscape projects and preparing and roasting chestnuts, Ott also spent many of those hours as a quilter. Pastor Tim Thomas of the Warsaw First Presbyterian Church provided the program of southern gospel music. Connie Miller gave a power-point presentation on the new picnic shelter, which is now open and located near the Visitor’s Center.

of the group involved each year, Haumschild responded, “Well, I think probably because we’re a family. We become a family and the story always is, if you think it’s funny at the show, you should see what goes on behind the scenes. So, I think that’s what brings everybody back each year. Sometimes people get tied up with other obligations and they say, “I can’t be involved this year but I’ll be back next year.” Monies raised from the Minstrel Show goes to support community activities and the Lions main mission, eyesight. Each year, the Warsaw Lions Show inducts someone into the Minstrel Show Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is designed to honor members, past or present, of the Minstrel Show cast who have made significant contributions to the production of the show. This year’s recipient was Todd Lupher. The Jason Pendola band provided the music for the show.

The annual Warsaw Lions Minstrel show provides an annual respite from the daily stress in our lives and is always a breath of fresh air prior to the holidays. This year’s show was no exception, combining quality musical performances; large doses of humor and of course, the obligatory jabs at friends and family. In his usual role as interlocutor, Jim Bartlett’s sense of humor kept the crowd on its toes, while director Jean Haumschild kept the entire company in line. If that is even possible. Haumschild said of this year’s show, “I think we have some really neat interruptions that we surprise the crowd with, and even surprised the chorus with last night. Some of the jokes pulled across really well. I think our music is really strong this year. I think that the solos are strong, they’re ones that people are familiar with so people can sing along.” Haumschild added, “I think that people just enjoy a night away – from all the troubles of the world. It’s a night where you can come here and just laugh. And you see people that you know from other occupations come and act like a fool, and make fools of themselves and its funny. And I think people just enjoy that.” When asked what keeps the members

This was Habitat for Humanity ReStore’s first year at the Senior Expo. They offer economical ways to pick up items to work on houses or to donate. They also are accepting volunteers. Sue Hardesty of ReStore said her favorite part of the Expo was, “Meeting all the people and getting the word out about the Habitat ReStore.” “This is just a great time for us at Novelty to be here and to support the community,” said Casey Claxton of Novelty Advertising, who has been at the Expo for four years, “We meet a lot of seniors who have either worked at Novelty or possibly had family that worked at Novelty. November 26th, 1950 The Sunday after Thanksgiving, old man winter reared his ugly head in Coshocton County and blanketed the streets with over a foot of snow. Residents watched in disbelief as the snowfall continued constantly from Thanksgiving night until that morning. One resident said it was the worst snow he’d ever seen in Coshocton County. Temperature highs stayed in the mid teens and motorists were urged to stay off the roads. The Tribune reported that it was the heaviest snowfall in almost 50 years. However, it was not the worst snowfall to hit our county. The worst occurred April 19 – 21, 1901 with a total of 36 inches.

November 26th, 1960 More than 1600 children gathered at the Courthouse to await a special arrival from the North Pole, the jolly old elf, Santa Claus. Mr. Claus and his elf helpers weren’t scheduled to arrive until 2 p.m., but at least 500 children and their parents had already started to assemble near the Courthouse at around 1 p.m. They listened to Christmas music played over the loud speakers while they waited. At promptly 2 p.m., Old St. Nick arrived and passed out candy to all the children, which took over an hour. He was then escorted to his sleigh for photos. The Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce said that at least 500 more children had come to see Santa than the previous year. What a great day to be a kid!

November 28th, 1980 Band students at Coshocton High School were thrilled when they learned they had been chosen to play in Gimbel’s Thanksgiving Day parade in Philadelphia. The band played their hearts out and entertained the masses with traditional Christmas carols. Although they did not receive any television coverage, the band still considered it an honor to have been chosen.

November 28th, 1970 The Village of West Lafayette received some new Christmas decorations thanks to the Chamber of Commerce and other generous donors. During previous holiday seasons, the village had Christmas lights strewn across the Main Street about 15 feet in the air. These were taken down the past year because of faulty wires. Now, the village celebrated the holidays with their new four-foot red candles topped with wreaths and greenery fixed to light posts. These candles can still be seen in West Lafayette during the holiday season.

from 200 – 250 benefit auctions. Some of these auctions were for cancer patients, some were for medical and funeral expenses, others were for accident victims as well as people who had lost their homes due to fire. One special auction was for a former Coshocton woman who needed a double organ transplant. In October, 1994, Sam was hospitalized due to a brain aneurysm. A benefit was held for him at the old American Legion. Several local auctioneers participated. In 1998, Sam was awarded the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce Community Improvement Award for holding so many benefit auctions. He was helped throughout the years by his children and grandchildren as well as his wife’s sisters. Also helping Sam throughout the years was his fellow auctioneer Bill Ogle. All of these benefits were done at no expense to the families. All goods sold at the auctions were donated by local businesses and friends all the auction supplies were donated by Sam himself.
