friday evening, Nov. 18 was the annual Coshocton Christmas parade and the realtors at Century-21 Court Square realty took this opportunity to support their community through the New Life Ministries food Pantry. The Century-21 realtors served 240 hot dogs and popcorn in exchange for a donation to the food pantry. The hard work paid off with a total of $325 raised for the food pantry. This was a first time attempt at doing this and Phil Covic, Broker and owner of Century-21 Court Square realty, said he is very proud of his realtors’ hard work and the generosity of the people of Coshocton. She will begin her Doctorate of Pharmacy in the fall of 2012. The future bridegroom is a 2007 graduate of River View High School and a 2011 graduate of Ohio State University, where he received a Bachelors Degree in Animal Science with a minor in Ag Business. He is currently employed as a supervisor at Indiana Packers Corporation, in Delphi, Indiana. A summer 2012 wedding is planned.

Coshocton County Memorial Hospital employees, Helen McClain, Information Technologies, Robert Miller, CEO, and Suann Maher, Laboratory, share a “high-five” as they represent just a few of the hospital’s “my fair share” contributors. The hospital awarded fairshare givers, or one hours’ pay per month, with a fleece pullover, pictured, and the number of MFS contributors more than tripled. The hospital employees’ pledges are nearly double that of last year with departments being awarded a holiday pizza party for 100% participation and

contributors names were entered in raffle drawings for additional prizes. “When you look at everything that is good about Coshocton, it all boils down to hard work and generosity,” said Lyn Mizer, Executive Director of Coshocton United Way, “CCMH employees should be very proud of their gifts back to Coshocton, and I know we and our agencies are very grateful. “Current campaign totals are about 30% of the $365,000 goal with the majority of campaign packets still to come in,” she said. “Don’t be fooled by the low amounts on the thermometers so far. Last year they shot up in December and January, so I am hopeful this year will be similar. With the tremendous pledges received so far, I am certain that we as a community are going to continue to invest our time and treasures into Coshocton.”

Ridgewood third graders receive new dictionaries

NEW DICTIONARIES Christmas came early for third graders at Ridgewood Elementary when three members of the West Lafayette Rotary Club visited the school and handed out dictionaries to all the third grade students. Dan Markley, Ed Chapdelaine, and Catherine Miller, president of the club, passed out about 100 personal dictionaries to each student. These weren’t just ordinary dictionaries either. In addition to all the words in the English language, including the longest word which is 1,909 letters long, the book featured maps, facts about each country, the nine parts of speech, biographies of all the United States presidents, the Declaration of Independence, weights and measurements, and other useful information. trays with freshly prepared food, they put down the carving knives and paused promptly at 10 a.m. for Pastor Mark Granger to give thanks. The annual tradition of serving the community a warm and nutritious meal on Thanksgiving Day complete with turkey or ham, noodles, green beans, pie and more continued this year with a system honed over several years. Pastor Mark Granger said, “We had a lot of help come out so we’re starting to deliver our meals early and that’s always good. People like to eat by noon. We’ll deliver over 460 meals – that’s right now – we’ll have some more come in, plus all of the help gets to eat. We cooked eighty turkeys and forty hams. “People like to help other people, and they like the feeling knowing that they’ve helped someone else. It’s a very special quality here because the people are giving people and they’re caring people. Some of our regular help passed away this year but there have been new people that have never helped come in this year, or gave money. The manager from Bob Evans is here today and they brought some meals to go to families and people love those. “I’m excited because it’s therapeutic for the helpers, a lot of them say, “My husband’s been gone but you give me a place to come for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Families will come in for Christmas and not Thanksgiving because it’s hard to come in for both if they’re from out of town. It means so much that people come in to help. “I’m just thankful for the community and everybody that helps us out each year. People look forward to these meals. The volunteers always come back with good feelings about what they’re doing to help, people like them to stay around and talk, we have to keep moving but we encourage them to talk. And if people want to pray, we pray with them.” Paul Gettle, who along with his family was preparing to deliver meals to the high rise apartments, said, “We’re just glad to help. We really believe in what Mark and New Life is doing here and we’re glad to be a part of sharing some Thanksgiving. This is our third year of helping, it’s something we can do as a family and just remind ourselves that today is about being thankful for what we have and who we can help.”

4-H leaders, advisors and friends were recognized for their volunteer service at the 2011 4-H Leaders’ Banquet, held Monday evening, Nov. 21 at the Presbyterian Church. The event was sponsored by the Coshocton County Agricultural Society, 4-H Endowment Committee, Farm Credit Services and Coshocton Grain Company. The event, which was not held for the past two years, recognizes those that volunteer their time and talent to the Coshocton County 4-H program. The successful passing of the five year OSU Extension levy last November has allowed the 4-H program to continue in Coshocton County and in particular, hold Coshocton County 4-H Camp Ohio this past summer. Following a delicious dinner prepared by members of the 4-H endowment committee and 4-H advisory committee and served by the Coshocton County Junior Leaders, certificates of award and pins were presented to first year key leaders; Beth Anderson, Timothy Anderson, Sarah Jane Lindsey, Amanda Poorman, Dana Markley, Garth Regula and Hannah Worthington. First year, five year, ten year, fifteen year, twenty year, twenty-five, thirty year, thirty-five, forty-five and fifty year advisors were also honored, with Jean Rausch recognized for fifty years. Cristy Gilmore, 2011 Coshocton County Junior Fair Queen, and Michaela Elson, 2011 Coshocton County Junior Fair Queen attendant, welcomed everyone to the event and Bob Buxton gave the invocation. FHFH Coshocton has been truly blessed in the fact that not one deer donation by a hunter has been turned down because adequate funding was not available to pay processing fees. More recently, the challenge has been finding an adequate supply of hunter deer donations to sustain the local feeding missions. There is a high demand for protein with unemployment rates rising; local missions have been stretched to the limit. Demand for primary domestic living supplements are at an all time high with protein at the top of the list. Hunters who wish to donate whole-dressed deer may contact the following processors direct. The donation is made by delivering tagged deer carcasses to the approved processor and assigning ownership of the venison to FHFH at no cost to the hunter. The following is a list of FHFH approved processors in the area.

provide matching funds to FHFH Ohio chapter accounts. The Ohio Division of Wildlife has committed to over $500,000 matching funds statewide to the program since the matching concept began. For every $1 local chapters’ raise in donations that are deposited into the FHFH chapter account, $1 of state matching money is contributed. The chapter’s account is used to pay deer processing fees for services provided by FHFH approved butchers. Coshocton County’s average cost for processing is approximately $1 per pound. When an individual business mission or foundation contributes $1 with the match, the chapter can process two pounds of venison. The lean protein product is equivalent to ground round quality. The consumer cost of ground round at the grocery is $4 per pound. The conversion value to the donor is $8 for each $1 donated to the program. Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry is a nonprofit Christian Mission located in Hagerstown, Maryland that focuses on providing processing services and a distribution network to hunters who wish to donate venison to feed the hungry. There have been 34 chapters of FHFH that have been established across the state of Ohio. Each chapter is headed up by a local volunteer coordinator. To date in the 2011/2012 Coshocton County season, FHFH has processed over 5,000 pounds of venison for local food missions. Deer gun season is Monday, Nov. 28 through Sunday, Dec. 4. FHFH expects a heavy intake of deer donations during gun deer season. During the 2010/2011 hunting season, there was 2,500 deer donated to the program statewide providing 131,000 pounds of meat or 524,000 servings. FHFH Coshocton County is now entering its seventh season of operation. To date, over 47,000 pounds of venison has been processed and distributed to local food banks in the greater metro Coshocton area. These donations have provided enough protein supplements for 188,000 servings. During the 2010/2011 hunting season, FHFH Coshocton delivered 12,000 pounds or 44,000 servings of venison to three feeding missions including Coshocton Salvation Army, New Life Ministries, New Philadelphia Salvation Army and Shepherd’s Christian Assembly. Ohio’s resident veterans of the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan eras have been paid over $33.1 million so far, with more to come as additional veterans apply for the Ohio Veterans Bonus. A total of 198 Coshocton County veterans have received a total of $169,452.54 for an average of $855.82 which ranks ninth among the 88 counties in amount received per veteran, according to information recently released by the Ohio Department of Veterans Services. A significant amount of it is likely to go back into the local economy.” Mercer County veterans received an average of $887.05, topping the state. Franklin County veterans have received more than $3.6 million. In addition, more than $8.1 million has been paid to 7,389 Ohio resident service members who are currently serving outside Ohio. The Ohio Veterans Bonus Program provides compensation to veterans who served on active duty with the U.S. armed forces, including the Ohio National Guard, anywhere in the world during specified periods of time. Eligible veterans may receive $100 for each month of active duty service in the following locations, with a maximum benefit of $1,000. Persian Gulf: Between Aug. 2, 1990 and March 3, 1991. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus until Dec. 31, 2013. Afghanistan: Since Oct. 7, 2001. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus for up to three years after the President declares an end to U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. Iraq: Since March 19, 2003. Eligible veterans can apply for a bonus for up to three years after the President declares an end to U.S. involvement in Iraq. Eligible veterans serving on active duty, except active duty for training, anywhere else in the world during the specified dates may receive $50 a month up to a maximum of $500. Eligible veterans may combine their service bonuses for a maximum payment of $1,500. To be eligible for the bonus, one of the following stipulations must be met: 1) The veteran must have been separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions; 2) The veteran remains on active duty; 3) After active duty service, the veteran remains in any reserve component of the armed forces, including the Ohio National Guard. The holidays are right around the corner and the Pomerene Center for the Arts is searching for the best holiday cookie in Coshocton County. The 3rd annual holiday cookie contest will be judged by Cheez-Kake Bakery owner David Smith on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Pomerene Center, corner of 3rd and Mulberry Streets, Coshocton, Ohio. The event is open to the public. The Village of West Lafayette’s Chamber President Christie Maurer announced plans are complete for Christmas in the Village to be on Saturday, Dec. 3. The Chamber has announced a couple of events to their holiday lineup including a Christmas lighting contest for all resident in the 43845 zip code and a pretty package contest to benefit Toys for Tots. The Christmas lighting contest is sponsored by the West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and is for anyone in the 43845 zip code. Registered homes have a chance to win a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. The judging will be done on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 7 – 10 p.m. There will be one grand prize winner. The West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce is also sponsoring a pretty package contest. Drop off your pretty package to the Chamber of Commerce table at the Club Aries Christmas Craft Show on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Ridgewood High School. During the holidays, the little things you do or don’t do can also mean a lot when it comes to protecting yourself from identity theft. The holiday season is rife with opportunity for identity thieves, as shoppers swarm malls, stores and websites looking for the perfect gift. Unfortunately, holiday shopping and identity theft go together like holly and evergreen. It may be hard to keep minutiae in mind when you’re in the middle of the holiday hustle and bustle, but small steps can help ensure identity thieves don’t enjoy the season at your expense. At the mall * Only carry in your wallet what you absolutely need. Take only the credit cards you will use and leave your Social Security card, library card and other potentially identifying

Ellen also wants to thank her many friends for their support, especially Cara Kaufman. “I especially thank my husband, Max,” said Ellen. “He is the one who has made this all possible. We have been competing against each other and supporting each other for almost 40 years.” A third Coshocton County equestrian, Darcy Bussard from the Warsaw area, also competed in the NBHA world competition on her horse “SHS Adeline Blanton”. She knocked down a barrel in her first run, and in a competition where placing is won in thousands of a second, she didn’t qualify on her second run to make the finals. Lori and Ellen both received several prizes for their placing as well as the coveted silver belt buckles that each can proudly wear, showing that they are ranked among the best barrel racers in the world in 2011. Lori Childress and Ellen McKee, two Coshocton County residents hold world championship placing in barrel racing. The world contest is at the Georgia National Fairgrounds at Perry, GA and draws contestants from all over the world. The world championship is sanctioned and governed by the National Barrel Horse Association. All contestants have to qualify in their respective divisions by earning enough points at competitions to earn the right to compete at the world championship. Contestants earn their points a year prior to the competition. This year’s contestants all qualified in 2010. This year’s event was Oct. 23 - 29. From the thousands who compete over the year at barrel racing, 974 qualifying contestants competed to have a shot at the world championship. Each of the 974 get two runs to make a qualifying time to make the finals. On each of these two qualifying runs, the top twenty places advance to the finals. Of the 974 entries, 186 advanced to the final round. From the 186, Lori Childress won third place in the third division and Ellen McKee won tenth place in the fourth division. In the second division, Lori came in 109th place on her first run, .385 of a second behind the first place runner. Between Lori and the first place, 107 riders placed less than four tenths of a second. On Lori’s second run, she placed

ninth in the fourth division, .042 of a second behind the winner. For the championship round, Lori and her horse “I’m Just a Little Squirt” ran a time of 16.164, placing her third in the third division and the 37th fastest time of all divisions. Lori had the highest place of all of the 24 entries from Ohio. “Squirt’s” dam, “Annie” has also qualified numerous times for the world championship, both in adult and youth categories. Lori resides near Bakersville with her husband Bruce Childress where she raises her horses on their Double Bar C Ranch. Lori’s winning horse, “I’m Just a Little Squirt,” was one Lori bred, raised, and trained herself. Lori has been competing in barrel racing for over 25 years. Lori has been to the world championship three times and placed ninth in her last appearance at the world championship in 1995. Lori has qualified several years for the world championship and has qualified in 2011 to compete again in 2012 at the nationals. “I would like to take a moment to thank my wonderful family and my many friends for all of their support,” said Lori. Ellen McKee has been competing in barrel racing for over 60 years. Ellen has made the cut to compete in the world championship several times, making many trips to world competition. This is the first time in her long career she has placed in the finals. Ellen has been involved with the NBHA since its formation and is currently a director representing the state of Ohio. On Ellen’s first run, she placed 15th in the fourth division with a 16.977, which qualified her for the finials. On her second run, Ellen placed fourth in the fourth division on her horse “TNT Red Money.” In the championship run, Ellen placed tenth in the fourth division with a time of 16.725. Ellen is retired from teaching at the Coshocton County Career Center. Ellen and her husband Max McKee live near Fresno where they ride and train their horses. Both have long been fixtures at local horse shows for decades. Max has also qualified numerous times and has competed in the world finals. Ellen has qualified in 2011 to go back to the nationals in 2012 and

Coshocton Convention and visitors bureau board hires new director The board of the Coshocton Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) has hired Jan Myers as their new director, beginning on Monday, Nov. 28. As Director of the Coshocton CVB, Myers will work with local attractions, lodging and events, to market Coshocton County as a tourism destination for day trips and overnight travelers. “I am thrilled at the opportunity to get to do this job,” said Myers. “I am so passionate about Coshocton and all we have to offer visitors. Marketing tourism in Coshocton is enjoyable since we already have such a positive image out there with our many wonderful attractions like Roscoe Village, Unusual Junction and our wineries, plus, our numerous popular festivals. We are so fortunate to have so much to share with visitors.” Myers most recently has been serving as the temporary part-time project manager for the newly-formed Our Town Coshocton board, which is an Ohio Main Street initiative. Her duties with that project were to prepare the organization to officially form as a non-profit corporation, file for non-profit status, and prepare to enter the Emerging Level of the Main Street organization process. “We are at that point now,” said Myers, “so this transition to the CVB comes at a good

She has worked in marketing for a number of years at both Unusual Junction and Roscoe Village. For several years, she has also worked as a freelance writer for numerous magazines, newspapers and online publications, and as a writer for the Coshocton CVB writing

press releases, travel articles and marketing copy. She also worked on the Coshocton Bicentennial Committee, specifically with the Ohio Chautauqua program and the Civil War Encampment. “The Coshocton CVB board was so pleased to have had several applicants apply for the position,” said CVB Board President, Carol Remington. “We are very happy that Jan Myers has agreed to take the position and feel confident she will hit the ground running to continue bringing tourists into our county.” The Coshocton CVB is funded through the bed tax paid by overnight lodging guests in Coshocton. Central Elementary School shared Project MORE, one of its outstanding programs, during the 13th annual Student Achievement Fair on Nov. 15 at the 2011 Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference and Trade Show. OSBA showcased 100 innovative programs at this year’s fair, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus. Central Elementary was selected to participate based upon its program’s creativity and positive impact on student achievement. Students and staff from districts across the state exhibited their innovative programs at the fair. The event offered an opportunity to observe and learn what public school districts in Ohio are doing to enhance learning and achievement in their schools. Benefits Higher Hopes Auction. The Higher Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center will have their 10th annual auction on Dec. 10 at the River View High School.
