As a small crowd of onlookers watched, the sturdy construction of the tower proved especially resilient to the wrecking ball before succumbing to the forces of physics and modern technology. This is a story about a November 2010 family trip by four boys and their 90 year old Dad. I suppose that I should say at this point that the boys were in their 50`s & 60`s. We had a good time. Traveling in a 32ft motor home is the way to go especially if you do not have to do any of the driving. Heading south we stopped along the Ohio River, had dinner with a nephews family who also had us stay overnight. They have a beautiful home overlooking the river. Thus we left Ohio and proceeded on into

West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, stopping whenever we ran across a point of interest, especially an eating place that looked good to us. We continued into North Carolina and then into South Carolina heading for the coast and the outer banks off North Carolina. Driving north, we headed for Nags Head and on to Kitty Hawk. Here we spent some time taking in the sights and of course, searching out for the better places to enjoy our meals. I especially enjoyed the rest and relaxation at Hooters restaurant and bar. The Hooter girls were beauties and did a good job taking care of us. Continuing north past the Naval base with a target destination of the National Civil War Museum at Harrisburg in eastern Pennsylvania. This is a “must see” for anyone interested in the various battles of the Civil War. Headed for home, we stayed the last night in the vicinity of Wheeling, WV. I`m proud of my four sons and their concern for well being. They planned the trip, looked after me, and took care of the many details. Max A. over the summer by the school’s maintenance team. Curriculum Director Eddie Dovenbarger, along with Sandy Hess, CSI program instructor, were looking for a way to help students better relate the marketing concepts taught in the program to real business operations. This sparked the idea for creating a small supply and gift store that would enable students to apply these instructional concepts to real-life. “We started with a business plan and surveyed our students and staff to see what kinds of items they would want in a store,” said Hess on Thursday morning just prior to the official ribbon-cutting ceremony that officially opened Lobo-Mart. “We promoted the store with posters and advertisements to build interest and enthusiasm and ordered and priced our products. We’ve had fun arranging our merchandise and decorating the store and now we’re finally ready to open.” The store sells an assortment of office supplies, personal hygiene products and other gift items that CSI students hope will appeal to the store’s primary customers, Career Center students and staff. Those gift items include jewelry, greeting cards, clothing items, purses, key chains and stuffed animals, among others. The store has holiday music playing and is decorated in a Christmas theme, something that students
hope will draw customers into the store, which is open during both lunch periods everyday but Tuesdays. “About a month into school, we started clearing the space out; it was full of old books that no one wanted,” said 17-year old Sandy Meek, a student in the CSI program. Before ordering inventory to sell, students decided to survey Career Center students and staff to discover the types of merchandise the store should stock. “As examples of stuff to sell, we used my input, as a teenage girl and Chris Maloy’s input as a teenage boy, and then we gave them extra space to write in other ideas for products,” Meek said. “We were actually pretty close to what students said they wanted in the store.” Display cases, racks and other props used to display merchandise and decorate the store were purchased or donated by Career Center staff and family members, as were some of the items available for sale. Now the students are working in the store as sales clerks in 2-person shifts, which rotate week-by-week. Hess says her students will track sales and profits, and make any changes needed to ensure its profitability and long-term health. “It’s such a great experience for us and it teaches our students how much work is involved in opening a business and making sure it can be successful.”

Coshocton Hospital and the Coshocton County Career Center have joined together in a program that offers students the experience of learning social and occupational skills in a business environment. The Career Skills Investigation Program (CSI) was formed last year and focuses on students with learning disabilities. The main goal of this program is to allow students to acquire skills not normally offered in a classroom environment. The program has a positive impact on the community also. It makes residents aware that there is a place in society for everyone, including individuals with learning or physical disabilities. “The program gives students the opportunity to find a way they can contribute to the community and become productive citizens,” said Sandy Hess from the Coshocton County Career Center. Currently students are volunteering on Tuesdays in various departments. Dave Powers, Dietary Director, and Joe Slominski, Director of Facility, are assisting students at the hospital in their departments. “This program is another example of how Coshocton Hospital continues its involvement in the community, and we are pleased to play a small part in the development of tomorrow’s leaders,” said Robert Miller, Coshocton Hospital CEO. Coshocton Hospital is a non-profit organization located at 1460 Orange Street in Coshocton Ohio. Currently the largest employer in Coshocton County, Coshocton hospital celebrated 100 years of service to the community in 2009. With a complete line of services available, they are dedicated to providing “The Right Care…Right Here”. For more information, contact the hospital at 622-6411 or visit them online at www. CCMH.com

The Generals had an 8-point lead at the end of the half, but the Trojans came back strong in the third quarter and with 4:55 left in the game, the score was 40-39, Generals. Danny Olinger, named the game’s most valuable player, hit the court and scored the remaining points for the Generals. Soldiers photos looking for new home For several years, visitors to our community and area citizens have gazed upon the dozens of photos that graced the Window of Honor at SOTA Technologies on Main Street in Coshocton. Each photo represents a member of our community that is currently serving or has served their country since approximately 2005. Irene Crouso Miller, who has helped coordinate the placement of the photos, commented, “This window was donated by SOTA Technologies to display the military personnel from our county and the surrounding area. At this point, we have 112 pictures in the window that display the name, rank and where they’re serving at the time their picture is put in the window. We have some people that have served and have gotten out; others are serving still and have been deployed several times to the Middle East. But the interesting thing is that these pictures have been accumulating since 2005, so for five years we’ve been displaying these photos for people. The inspiration came from the Women of Witness, which is a local organization of Christian women that wanted to display photos of our military personnel so the people of our community could see the names and faces of the people that are serving our country and pray for them and use their names in their prayers. So, this is a service that the Women of Witness has done.”

Miller continued, “We have to remove the photos today, because SOTA, in the goodness of their heart let us use this window for five years. Now they’ve rented out this part of the building and the renters need the display window. So we are actually looking for a place to house the Window of Honor. If someone is interested or knows of a possible location they can call the Women of Witness office at 740-622-3797 or me at 740-545-9554. We do have another local organization that is possibly looking to take over this project but that is not yet confirmed.” Miller added that visitors to our community were impressed with the display, oftentimes remarking, “I wish we had something like this in our town.” Miller also said that she often shed tears with parents and grandparents as they handed her a loved one’s photo for display in the window.

Jeff Wickerham, representing the Muskingum Valley Council, “This is a great opportunity for our Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts to hear about the ten different commandments. We have a duty to God and it’s also an opportunity for our scouts to get out in the community, get physically fit and hear about the history of these churches. We do have a duty to God and we’re very proud of that and won’t stray away from that because we feel it’s an extremely important part of the youth in our program as well as the volunteers – it’s one of the most important aspects of scouting.”

Students in the Culinary Arts program at the Career Center worked diligently to prepare and box-up holiday cookies for this year’s Miracle on Main Christmas celebration. To be exact, the students baked and delivered over 100 dozen cookies to the Towne Center-sponsored event, which took place Friday, Nov. 19. “Many in our community see this event as the start of the holiday season,” said Ginger Reiss, Community Relations Coordinator at the Career Center. “Mr. Cichon and his students are always thrilled with being able to prepare what so many residents enjoy about the celebration: the cookies!” This is the third year that Mike Cichon, Culinary Arts instructor at the Career Center, and his students have baked cookies for the event. Several types of cookies were prepared including sugar, spice, chocolate and snicker doodles among many others.

We’re going to deliver over 400 meals today and last year we served 160 meals inside.” When asked what he thought about the local economy and in particular, reports in the national media that the economy is getting better, Granger responded, “I see about the same as last year here. We cooked some extra turkeys
this year because we ran out of meat last year and I think it’s going to be at least the same if not a little bit more. The need is still there and there are just a lot of people with nowhere to go or who don’t have families. Families will come in at Christmas but not always Thanksgiving.” Volunteer Haley Wiggins said, “I just wanted to help people and its Thanksgiving and it’s a good time to be together and enjoy a good meal together. It’s a really good feeling to do this.” Floyd Booth, who brought two hams for the dinner, said, “We just like to help people. It makes you feel good.”

Connect Your Community (CYC) Team Coshocton will be opening their doors to all families with military personnel or college students that cannot make it home for the holidays. Through the use of SKYPE and the Internet, family members can communicate with loved ones stationed around the globe. CYC will open up their facility and make available their computers, speakers, webcam, microphone, Internet connection, and assistance so that family members can talk and possibly see each other via an online call. SKYPE is a software program that allows people to communicate with each other via the Internet. In addition to making only voice calls, it also provides the ability to carry on two-way video conferencing. For computer-to-computer connections, using SKYPE, all calls are free. CYC is a federally-funded grant program whose purpose is to train individuals to use a
Penny West, who was cutting up pumpkin pie, commented, “This is our first year and we’ve always looked for ways to give back to the community and we just thought this would be a great opportunity, especially for our fifteen year old son.” Granger added, “I always say it’s more therapeutic for us in here working because some people have been through bad divorces or have lost spouses, some just have nowhere to go and some want to get plugged in and make new friends. The people that deliver the meals come back the happiest people because the people receiving the meals are so thankful.”
