Coshocton Hospital and the members of the Ohio Nursing Association (ONA) have announced the selection of Charli Guthrie, RN, as the 2011 Coshocton Hospital Nurse of the Year. Guthrie began her nursing career as a registered nurse on the 4th floor medical/surgical unit of Coshocton Hospital in 2003 after attending Ohio University. She has since received her certification in palliative and hospice nursing and works in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital. Nominations for this honor are accepted from Proud to have served the people of Coshocton and our surrounding communities for over 115 years!

Coshocton Hospital’s nursing union members, who vote by secret ballot to select the winning candidate. The nurse of the year selection is based on overall aspects of patient care as well as the nominee’s overall commitment to the practice of nursing reflected in leadership, commitment and organizational involvement. In expressing her pride in receiving the award, Guthrie recognized her fellow nurses and the nursing aides who have worked with her over the past nine years. “I would not have received this award without my co-workers who have taught me so much about caring for patients with level of dignity, respect and compassion - skills that can’t be learned in nursing school,” Guthrie said. “I am extremely flattered that my co-workers have honored me with this award.” Guthrie and her husband, Timothy, have four children: Tyrus, Aliyah, Adison and Pyper. In addition to working full time and raising her family, Guthrie is also working on her final classes to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ohio University. Coshocton Hospital nurses and staff will honor her with a Nurse of the Year Tea on Friday, Dec. 9 from 2 - 4 p.m. in the Orange Street Station meeting room at the hospital.

This year has gone so quickly, and I have now celebrated my first anniversary as treasurer. We are now upon another holiday season, and soon another tax collection. I would like to thank each one of you who paid your real estate and manufactured home taxes this year. I appreciate your diligence in keeping your tax obligation current. We are working toward a mid February due date for 1st half 2011 taxes payable in 2012. I would also like to thank the more than 175 taxpayers who entered into a delinquent contract to make monthly payments, and the many who paid their delinquencies in full this past year. As a result of the over 1.5 million dollars in delinquencies collected prior to August, the three Coshocton County school districts received the following additional amounts in 2011: Coshocton City - $351,427.00, Ridgewood - $271,428.60, and River View - $370,405.20. The total delinquencies collected this past year totals over 2 million dollars. I realize many are struggling to make ends meet during our current economic conditions; however, we must continue as landowners in Coshocton County to strive to keep our tax obligations current. Delinquent taxes make it a challenge for the various county departments when they do not receive the expected revenue each year. We still have many real estate and mobile home parcels remaining unpaid for this tax year. If you have delinquent taxes, please do not just ignore them. Please come to the Treasurer’s Office at the Courthouse Annex, or call 622-2731 to make arrangements to pay them. My goal is to help taxpayers meet their tax obligations, not to add to the present foreclosure list. I thank my staff for their continued hard work. They are very caring and dedicated to serving the residents of Coshocton County. I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

“We have looked good at times through the scrimmages and then not so good at times as well,” Bowman said. “We need to defend and rebound and hopefully wins will happen.” In regard to the East Central Ohio League Gray Division race, Bowman sees Zanesville Rosecrans being the front runner with River View right behind them. “River View has a great tradition and (Coach Kevin Smith) Smitty’s kids play with a lot of effort. As for the Scarlet Division Dover should be very good teams with Zanesville close behind and New Philadelphia should be real athletic.” The Lady Redskins opened the season with losses to Licking Valley (48-33) and Carrollton (48-41) and were to play at Cambridge in the ECOL opener on Monday. Other non-league games include Waynedale, Newcomerstown, Danville and Philo. “I’m trying to get back to the fundamentals of basketball with these girls,” Bowman said. “Having five returning letter winners and the addition of Tanisha hopefully will help the cause. “These young ladies have been around me since they were playing little league basketball so they know what I demand from them on and off the floor.”

There about two directions a basketball program can go after a winless season. Upwards or no place at all. For first year head coach Paul Bowman, he is not willing to settle for the latter. The Coshocton High School girl’s basketball team fell to defeat in all 21 of its contests last season but Bowman is optimistic that there are brighter days ahead. “I’m hoping these girls can get a few wins early which will help their confidence for the remainder of season,” said Bowman. “Maybe we can get this program back to the tradition we had a few years ago when our teams thought they could win every night. “We are looking to get back to fundamental basketball and playing better defense. We have some quickness which will allow us to run the floor which I hope will lead to some victories but we must learn to play with effort every night in order to accomplish some of our goals we have set.” Coshocton graduated leading scorer and rebounder Rachel Zimomra, but five letter winners are returning, including seniors Brittany Neiger, Nichole deJesu and Katie Clough. Also back is junior Julia Kittell and sophomore Kasey Means. Others expected to contribute will be seniors Jenny Eikenberry and Tanisha Means as well as junior Emilee Pell, sophomore Kylie Brown and freshman Katie Tupper. “I really believe Brittany and Nichole are capable of some big things this year,” Bowman said. “We have moved Katie more into the post and I think she can give us some scoring down there with her quickness.

Black Bears focused on season under new coach It may be unrealistic for the River View High School boy’s basketball team to duplicate the feat achieved by the 1975 team, which brought home a state championship. However, that doesn’t mean the 2011-12 Black Bears don’t have their sights set high. “People here, I think are hungry for a winner,” said first year coach Jason Trout. “But, it would be foolish for me or anybody else to think that it’s going to turn around in a week.” River View’s program has struggled in the past several years, finishing last year with a 0-21 mark, but Trout and his coaching staff have seen their team make strides toward turning things around. “I feel good about this team,” Trout said. “We’ve had some pretty good practices and we’re getting the kids ready to go. We’re trying to change the mindset of going from being 0-21 to trying to turn it into a winning mindset and just getting them to understand what it takes to win instead of going through the motions and being happy with that.” The leaders of the team include seniors Jason Hammond, Michael Adams, Jamie Schwartz, and sophomore Cory Miller. All lettered last season. In fact, Hammond and Adams will be vying for their fourth varsity letter, stepping into key roles as freshmen. Hammond will man the point guard position while Adams will be out on the wing. “Jason does a tremendous job at the point and he shoots the ball extremely well,” Trout said. “And with Michael, I have never seen such a quick trigger for someone who shoots as well and as deep as he does. He’s pretty much got the the green light from anywhere this side of half court.” Schwartz has demonstrated excellent versatility and could fill in at virtually every position while Miller, at 6-foot-4, provides excellent athleticism in the post. The other starters will be selected from juniors Hunter Winegar and Tyler Triplett,

As a varsity assistant at Groveport-Madison, the team went from 0-21 to garnering 11 wins. “I knew up front when I interviewed, this is where it’s at but really, the demand of what we expect the kids to do is intense and the expectation is that we get there now and we do it the right way or there are consequences,” Trout said. “There is a wrong way and a right way. “We made it pretty clear from day one that this was how it’s going to be. This is the expectation and they’re not going to drop. Even if you’re a guy who scores 20 a game, everybody is going to do it the right way. I told them that’s why there are hinges on the door. “It’s a pretty high-energy practice and I have an extremely good coaching staff who helps with that. Some of the things we do maybe are not for everybody but in my experience, in order to get things turned around, to where it needs to be headed in the right direction.” Again, it won’t be easy, especially in the talent-laden East Central Ohio League where the Black Bears will compete in the Gray Division teams against Claymont, Coshocton, Meadowbrook and Rosecrans. The Scarlet Division includes Dover, New Philadelphia, Cambridge, Zanesville and Marietta. “When you look around the state as far as programs that are perennially good, I think the ECOL is one of the best in the state,” Trout said. “You have tradition at every single school. “It’s going to be a fight for us every night. We’re trying to rebuild and turn things around and the way we’re going to get there is to play well every night and not take any possessions off. The Black Bears opened the season last Friday at Harrison Central and will play their home opener this Friday against New Philadelphia.

For Coshocton’s bicentennial holiday season, you can share in the “Lighting of the Trees” by sponsoring one of the crabapple trees on Main Street. As a tree sponsor, you will help the Canal Festival Queen and princesses in their fund-raising project for the Coshocton community. Their efforts will help offset the cost of the needed replacement of all the holiday lights for the crabapple trees on Main Street. Each tree will have a seven by ten inch double sided laminated holiday card attached with the sponsor’s name. Any individual, family, club, church, business or organization can sponsor the purchase of a tree. Coming off a season in which it compiled 14 victories, the River View High School girl’s basketball team is looking for even bigger and better things as the 2011-2012 season gets underway. The Lady Bears, coached by Kevin Smith, return just two letter winners, but a solid cast of newcomers should make the team even more competitive this year. “We need to have consistent improvement throughout the season,” said Smith. “There will be great challenges every night in league play.” Among the returning letter winners are senior Peyton Stipes and sophomore Andi Daugherty. Stipes will manage the offense from the point guard position while Daugherty, who stands 6-foot tall, is versatile and could play guard, wing or post. “We are going to relay on Peyton and Andi to lead the other girls who don’t have a lot of varsity experience,” Smith said. Vying for the other starting spots will be juniors Kylie Hawkins, Sami Straits and Ashton Clarke, along with sophomore Sam Ringwalt. Adding depth to the roster will be juniors Katie Daugherty, Justine Moran and Tyler Lahna River View will compete in the Gray Division of the East Central Ohio League, twice battling the likes of Coshocton, Claymont, Meadowbrook and Zanesville Rosecrans. Smith acknowledges Rosecrans as a young but talented team last year and expects them to be very competitive and have the inside edge for

Steve Fox, of the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office and who works closely with the Realtors and coordinates Sheriff’s sales, was presented with the Affiliate of the Year award. Fox said of the honor, “It’s extremely humbling to be placed among these people and find that they recognize and appreciate the service that we have to do. It’s a very difficult and very unpleasant service that the Sheriff’s office has to do. I’m sure that they recognize it and they feel the pain. We just do the best we can and to be honored by the members in this association is very humbling to me.” Fox began his career in law enforcement with the Coshocton Police Department in 1973. The Generals faced off against Maysville, Licking Valley, Shenandoah, Canton Central Catholic, Steubenville, Claymont and Buckeye Trail in the preseason. Last year’s team captured a Division III sectional title, the school’s first in 17 seasons, beating Barnesville and Tuscarawas Valley. In the district tournament semifinal, the Generals fell to St. Clairsville by a 52-51 score. “We have a hard-working group and they are fun to be around,” Keesee added. “I’ve probably enjoyed this first 3-4 weeks more than years past because these kids are sponges. They’re always trying to learn and improve their skill level as much as they can. “We’re anxious to start the season and see how we grade out on game night.” The Generals opened the season with backto-back home games against Peoples Baptist Academy and Sandy Valley. Non-conference foes include Carrollton, East Richland Christian, Indian Valley and River View.

Nothing comes easy in the life of a high school boys basketball team affiliated with the InterValley Conference. At least as long as schools such as Hiland, Garaway and Malvern are involved. That’s why the Ridgewood Generals will be facing a difficult task when it embarks upon the 2011-12 season. Defending champion Hiland not only won the IVC crown, but provided the proverbial icing on the cake when it captured the Division IV state title. The Hawks return their top two scorers and will have a pair of 6-foot-7 bodies in the front court to contend with. “The league should be as strong as always is, making every night a challenge,” said Ridgewood head coach Alan Keesee, who enters his third season at the helm. In his first two campaigns his teams have combined for 28 wins and 17 losses. Ridgewood was a combined 1-5 against the aforementioned conference foes. But the Generals will be no push-over for any of its conference foes as four returning lettermen give the team a solid nucleus and will help reduce the pain of losing four starters from a year ago. Among the returnees is 6-foot-4 senior Tanner Stoffer, who last year earned AllIVC honorable mention, Division #5 Coaches Association second team and Eastern District honorable mention. A two-sport standout, Stoffer has signed a letter-of-intent to play golf at West Liberty State College in West Virginia. Also back for the Generals are 6-1 senior Chris Saylor and a pair of 6-3 juniors in Zak Keesee and Christian Grove and 6-0 junior Josh King. Newcomers include 5-11 senior Scot Dawson, 6-0 junior Dillon McPherson, 6-2 sophomore Ryan Lowe and sophomores Seth Bergeron, a 5-9 guard and Brandis Allen, a 6-6 post. “The kids are getting comfortable with each other but we are looking for more out of our bench and hope that as the season goes on, they’ll be able to come in and spell our starters,” Keesee said. “Overall, our kids are more transferrable and aren’t locked in to specific positions,” he added. There is a lot of diversity with our top seven guys and that will allow us to be more creative.” Four starters are gone from last year’s 16-7 squad, including Evan Jones, a Michigan State football signee who opted not to play his senior season, and Thomas Ellis, the team’s leading scorer. “Our kids are working pretty hard to develop a cohesive unit,” Keesee said. “We played more scrimmages and got a lot of actual playing time in rather than the normal 2-3 scrimmages. I felt that with the system in place, it was important to mix it up with other teams as much as we can and we did that to the max.”

Coshocton County Master Gardeners received a grant from American Electric Power in honor of AEP employees Teresa Donley and Tracey (Stephen) Wiseman’s significant volunteer service. The AEP Connects program recognizes the commitment of AEP employees and retirees to their communities and supports causes that are important to them, according to Michael G. Morris, chairman, president and chief executive officer. More than 600 grants were made companywide last year representing more than 57,000 volunteer hours donated by AEP employees and retirees and their families. “Although no monetary grant can compare to the value of the time our employees and retirees give to worthwhile causes, the $150 grants made by this program in the names of AEP volunteers will help schools and nonprofit organizations meet the challenges of fulfilling important human needs,” Morris said. Tammi Rogers, OSU Extension Program Assistant and Master Gardener Coordinator, said, “The Coshocton Master Gardener Volunteers are very pleased to have been awarded this grant. The monies will be used for future educational programs and continuing to beautify Coshocton County.” Teresa Donley has been a Master Gardener Volunteer since 2004 and has volunteered over 370 hours since. Tracey Wiseman has been a Master Gardener Volunteer since 2004 and has volunteered over 340 hours. OSU Extension-Coshocton County Master Gardeners have volunteered over 1100 hours toward educating the public and beautifying Coshocton County in 2011 alone.

When Coshocton Hospital moved urgent care services to its current location last December, it was the first step in the process of bringing minor medical care walk-in service closer to their emergency department (ED). With the space now vacated by the patient accounts staff’s move to the Coshocton Hospital Business Annex, phase two of the process is underway with plans to merge urgent care services with the ED to create Coshocton Hospital QuickCare Services. Effective March 1, 2012, the medical clinic will become a service of the ED, with treatment rooms moved to the vacant office area next to the ED on the first floor of the hospital. Emergency department patients and QuickCare patients will enter through the emergency room entrance and be directed to a triage nurse. The nurse will determine if the patient should be seen by an ED physician or by the QuickCare nurse practitioner who will work under the supervision of the ED physician. QuickCare patients will proceed to the nearby QuickCare registration desk and waiting room, where they will receive care in one of five new treatment rooms. With the QuickCare alternative, all patients will arrive at the ED and the triage nurse will make the appropriate determination. This new service will provide care for minor health issues that is faster than a traditional ED visit, due to the level of care necessary to treat the conditions triaged as appropriate for QuickCare service. The QuickCare services will be supervised by Premier, the physician group that currently staffs the emergency department with physicians. The medical assistants working in the current medical clinic will become a part of the new ED, with support staff moving to other departments within the hospital. Using the ED physician group will provide the additional patient benefit of QuickCare clinic service available seven days a week, with hours tentatively planned for 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily. The addition of patient care hours will result in the need to hire two new nurse practitioners, with additional staff considered as the need arises. Renovation of the first floor office space to create the new QuickCare treatment rooms has already begun in anticipation of the March 1 completion date. The current medical clinic location will remain open on the ground floor of the hospital until the QuickCare location is completed. Patients enter the existing Coshocton Hospital Medical Clinic through the main entrance at 1460 Orange St. The clinic’s hours are Monday through Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. - Noon and 4:30 - 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Four Paws Pet Adoption Center is now taking applications for temporary foster families for the holidays. Foster families are needed from Dec. 23 – Jan. 2. Families can request the cats or dogs they want to foster on a first come, first serve basis if they have not been adopted by Dec. 23. The Foster for the Holidays program will give the animals a family for Christmas, getting them out of their cages and allowing them some extra play time. Crates are available for on loan during this time, if needed. In addition to temporary Foster Families, regular families are needed for some of the larger dogs now at the Adoption Center. Crates and pet food will be provided for regular foster families. Toy Chest in need of Toys. The Firefighter’s Toy Chest is still in need of lots of toys. They have 747 children in Coshocton County this year that they are serving for Christmas and at this time, they only have toys to fill about 250 of those children. Toys are needed by Dec. 13.

Christmas banquet. The Coshocton County Genealogical will have its annual Christmas banquet at the Roscoe United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20. Newly-elected 2012 officers and induction of members into the First Family, and Pioneer Family will highlight the evening. Regular meeting will resume Jan. 17 with Larry Stahl as guest speaker.

Newberry College, a Division II school located in South Carolina. There, he will join cousin and former Redskin teammate David Brown, who is enrolled at nearby Southern Wesleyan College. A 6-foot-6 guard, Taylor earned All-Ohio special mention, first team all-Eastern District, District #5 Coaches Association and ECOL honors last year when he averaged 17.7 points per game. He was also selected as a Top 50 participant in the Ohio Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association and will achieve a rare feat by becoming a four-year letter winner. Brandon will be a four-year letter winner at the close of the upcoming basketball season. Also back is the very talented Clay Turner, whose early season contributions could be limited due to an injury he suffered during Coshocton’s football campaign, along with Brennan Bowman, Brody Philabaum, Evan Johnson and Drew Jarvis. Turner, Jarvis, Bowman and junior Tanner Cognion, who will also be a major contributor, also received several post-season accolades last year. “We have a veteran team with a lot of experience, but early on we will need to fight through injuries,” Hilgenberg said. Hilgenberg is also counting on the contributions of underclassmen Curtis Blake, Kyle Corder and C.J. Helter. Coshocton finished last year with a 13-8

Following back-to-back championships in the East Central Ohio League, the Coshocton High School boys’ basketball team will face a monumental task if it hopes to make it three in a row. The newly aligned ECOL places the Redskins in the Gray Division, which includes the likes of Zanesville Rosecrans, Meadowbrook, Claymont and River View, all whom must face twice this season. Adding to the degree of difficulty is the fact that all teams in the Gray Division must contend with the schools in the Scarlet Division one time during the campaign. Making up that division are powerhouses Dover, Zanesville, New Philadelphia, Cambridge and Marietta. “We have a chance to compete for a divisional championship. The league will be extremely tough and Rosecrans is the team to beat,” said Coshocton head coach Tom Hilgenberg. Rosecrans was the number one-ranked team in Division IV for much of the 2010 season before being ousted by eventual state champion Hiland and returns all but a few components to that squad. The loss to Hiland was the Bishop’s only setback. But the Redskins also bring back much of last year’s firepower, including six seniors and one junior whom all lettered. The 2011 Coshocton Canal Festival royalty, with the help of the community, have reached half their goal in helping their sponsor the Coshocton Towne Centre Association raise $4,000 for the replacement of the mini lights for the 100 Spring Snow Crabapple trees that line Main Street. Fifty of the crabapple trees have sponsors. Queen Kassidy Meek and Princess Amy Jo Johnson along with their attendants are still competing among themselves to see which of them can get the most individual tree sponsors. At the present time Princess second attendant Rebekah Lillibridge is in first place. The girls are asking for a donation of $40 to sponsor a tree. Each tree will have a seven by ten inch double-sided laminated holiday decorated card attached with the sponsor’s name. Any individual, family, club, church, business or organization can sponsor a tree. Trees can be sponsored as a memorial gift and will have the dedicated name along with the name of the sponsor on the holiday card that is attached to each tree. Deadline for the competition to sponsor a tree for the holiday season is Saturday Dec. 17. Donation applications can be picked up at WTNS, Carroll’s Men Shop, or Sue’s Hallmark & Florist or by contacting one of the Canal Festival Royalty. The Ridgewood Drama Team presents Dramatic Publishing’s Those Crazy Ladies in the House Around the Corner on Dec. 15 and Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. This heartwarming piece is loaded with wisecracks and one-liners that keep the laughter flowing. What do you do when you have three geriatric sisters, portrayed by seniors Meghan Cunningham, Celia Gress and Hannah Miller, as patients and all they want to do is sit at home and talk to one another all at the same time? You move another person in with them. At least, that’s what Doc Lomax, portrayed by senior Matthew Brown, does when he has a new nurse, portrayed by senior Katie Share, needing a place to live, a nurse with a secret, that is. The hard part is convincing the sisters they need a roomie. In no time, however, Nurse Jean has them planning parties and wearing jogging suits while they race each other. But when the nephew, portrayed by freshman Jacob Panteloukas shows up with a plan to sell the family house, things get complicated again, especially with Christmas just around the corner. The production also includes senior Elizabeth Layman, as Nurse Jean’s mother; junior Jantzen Allen, Jean’s boyfriend; and sophomore Hayden Burkholder, those crazy ladies’delivery boy. Admission for students is $3 and for adults $5. The high school is also hosting a luncheon for the senior citizens in the school district on Dec. 14.

Ridgewood High School girl’s basketball team as the 2011-2012 season unfolds. Last year, the Lady Generals finished with a 12-10 mark and placed fourth in the Inter-Valley Conference but return five letter winners from that team, creating optimism for head coach Doug Patterson. “We have a good mix of returning lettermen and talented young players,” Patterson said. Among the returning players are seniors Kayla Tedrick, Alaynee Wright, Ali Lusk, Roxann Thursby and Kelsey Miller. Tedrick raked in several post-season accolades last year, including first team IVC, District 5 Coaches Association Player of the Year and second team on the Associated Press’ All-Eastern District team. She averaged just under 15 points per game. Miller, a 6-foot center, and Wright also earned All-conference, and All-district honors, giving the Lady Generals a group of proven commodities. Lusk also returns seeking her fourth varsity letter, stepping in as a freshman while Thursby should provide a spark with her hustle and quickness. Adding to the mix will be several newcomers. Rounding out the roster are sophomores Bailee Haynes and Brittany. “We want to be challenging for the league title and playing our best ball at tournament time,” Patterson said. “Our goal is to be in that top one or two.” He believes Hiland will have the inside track to the IVC title, but thinks Garaway and Strasburg could be in the mix. Also on the non-conference slate are the East Central Ohio League’s River View and Dover and River View. Other games will pit the Lady Generals against Indian Valley, Loudonville and Johnstown. Conotton Valley has withdrawn from the IVC but one game with the Lady Rockets remains on the schedule. “The big thing for us is to improve defensively,” Patterson said. “I think we will be good on offense but we need to get better at the other end of the floor.” Now in his eighth season as head coach, Patterson is nearing the century mark for victories with an overall mark of 97-76. The Lady Generals opened the season with a bang, beating up on Sandy Valley for a 60-22 win. In that game, Tedrick tallied 30 points while Miller added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Saturday, the Ridgewood girls hosted Conotton Valley and on Wednesday, face Newcomerstown at the Woodshed.
