Donovan selected as grand marshall of air show World War II veteran Dal Donovan was born April 2, 1923. He graduated from Coshocton High School in 1941 and is a 1949 graduate of The Ohio State University. Donovan also is married to Lois Morrison Donovan and they have three children, Lisa Sellan, Zachary Donovan and Ann Slusser. Donovan served with the Army Air Corps 39th Bomb Group and was a navigator on a B-29 called the Piledriver, which accidently buzzed the USS Missouri on an important date in history. The USS Missouri was the site of the official surrender of the Japanese Empire On Sept. 2, 1945, also known as VJ Day (Victory over Japan). The Piledriver was one of several planes flying over the ship that day as a show of force. Donovan explains how his plane got a little too close to the USS Missouri in a book titled, “History of the 39th Bomb Group, World War II.” His article appears on pages 208-209 and is called, “Ending it with a Bang.” The following is a brief portion of what he wrote for the book. “…..You would turn toward the oncoming craft, wondering about its direction. Then you stare in disbelief as it roars directly toward you, gradually becoming bigger and bigger, like a kamikaze. An American kamikaze, but without the evasiveness or the intentions of the Japanese suicide planes. You watch, transfixed, until you barely see the startled faces of three airmen, their expressions grim in disbelief. The mist and the abruptness of the airplane’s turn would suggest the wandering to your ship was not by design and no hot-shot piloted the only B-29 flying 200 feet above the water. As it suddenly ascends and banks to your right, you pivot 90 degrees and for a fleeting

moment see the cherubic face of Bill Harter, the tail gunner from Salisbury, N.C., looking more perplexed than the entire Untied States Navy; and the identification, P-32. Plain as the nose on your face. An unintentional buzz job of unprecedented proportions. Below decks, several brass wanted to know, “What was that?” For a moment the edgy Japanese thought it might be one more bomb. And the crew of the Piledriver thought they would be in irons moments DONOVAN after the engines shut down on Guam. But it wasn’t to be. None of the Navy men could remember the number. Or so they said. And no airman knew which comrade broke formation. After a late meal, exhaustion supplanted the excitement of an incredible day, including the realization that no one else in this universe could ever experience the up-close scenes of devastation followed by the near-kiss of the Missouri. Dal drifted off to sleep that night wondering if an Admiral hadn’t drifted off to sleep, smiling and thinking, ‘What a hell of a way to end a war!’”

Ohio Flags of Honor and a Tribute to Our Veterans Beginning at 11:00 a.m. We are truly humbled to be hosting the Ohio Flags of Honor as part of our 2013 Wings Over Coshocton Air Show. The Ohio Flags of Honor is Ohio's traveling memorial to our men and women who have given their lives in Afghanistan, Iraq and throughout the world in the war on terrorism. During this emotionally moving ceremony, the names of all those from Ohio who have been killed in the current conflicts are read as a flag is raised in their honor. By the end of the ceremony, 288 flags will be flying in tribute to our fallen heroes. Visitors to the Wings Over Coshocton Air Show will also see 350 sponsored tribute American flags flying along the road on the way to the airport. For more information about the Ohio Flags of Honor visit www.OhioFlagsofHonor.org.

You have to see this young man fly a plane! The 2013 Wings Over Coshocton Air Show on Saturday, Sept. 21 will feature Jason Flood, a young aerobatics pilot that survived a horrendous crash near the New Jersey shore and returned to the air as soon as he could. Hailing from New Jersey, Flood flies a Pitts Special S-1S, which is a single seat biplane highly modified aerobatic aircraft built especially for the stunts you will him perform at the air show. Flood became involved in aerobatics when he was growing up and flew his first solo flight on his sixteenth birthday. For the past six years, he has been competing in aerobatic contests and began performing in air shows in 2010. “Being a young man flying in front of a large crowd knowing there are people on the ground looking up at me and perhaps feeling inspired to follow their dreams and realize their passion for aviation is what I enjoy most,”, said Flood. “Flying is my passion and to be doing what I love at an air show is the ultimate experience.” Follow Jason on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ jasonfloodairshows.floodairshows

Mike Vaknin & his Extra 300 Michael’s Passion for flight has started at the age of 18 as a paratrooper and later as an airborne instructor. In his 4 years service Michael had performed hundreds of static line jumps sky-dives from C-130’s, DC-3’s and more. The passion for aviation led Michael to take flying lessons and earn his commercial pilot and flight instructor certificates. Instructing at local flight schools Michael logged hundreds of hours helping new pilots achieve their goals in aviation. The affair with aerobatics started immediately after earning the private pilot certificate, a short ride in a ZLIN Z-242 and Mike was hooked. Today Michael is an active IAC Competitor and an ICAS member performing at air shows around the Country. Michael’s style brings precision, speed, head dazzling Gyroscopic and high G maneuvers. When Michael is not flying aerobatics he enjoys.... thinking of aerobatics.

Jim ‘Fang’ Maroney & the DeHavilland Super Chipmunk

7

With a distinguished military career, having flown the top fighters of both the Air Force and Navy, to include being rated 'Top Gun' at Miramar in 1983, and flying combat patrol over Washington D.C., following 911, to his accomplishments and commitment as a commercial pilot and airshow performer, Jim Maroney truly exemplifies dedication to aviation as a professional and as an American.

Dave Dacy & Tony Kazian Super Stearman Wingwalking Team Whether performing a solo aerobatic routine, or with wingwalker, Tony Kazian, ‘on board’, the Super Stearman brings to crowd center the thrill, excitement, smoke and noise of true airshow entertainment! In a low level, aggressive aerobatic display of barnstorming maneuvers Dave Dacy’s self-styled routine in the Super Stearman continues to be a ‘front page’ story, captivating the attention of event attendees, sponsors and media alike. The incredible talents and capabilities of two high skilled professionals come together as Dave Dacy and Tony Kazian present a tremendous aerobatic wingwalking performance that is ‘second to none’.

Doug Dodge and Machaira, a ‘One of a Kind Muscle’ Biplane Doug Dodge began flying airshows in 1974, in a Messerschmitt Monsun and Bucker Jungman. Since that timeframe Doug has flown both as part of two formation teams and in solo performances throughout much of the United States and Canada. Doug is Airport Manager for the James Clements Airport, located in Bay City, Michigan, where he also owns a shop specializing in aerobatic aircraft. ‘Machaira’ named for the Greek word meaning two edged sword, was designed and built by Doug based on the size and dynamics of the Pitts Special. Machaira is powered by a Lycoming 10540, modified to produce 325 h.p.

The Aerostars Aerobatic Team

Combining both precision formation and graceful aerobatics, there is never a moment the spectators are not totally captivated by the Aerostars thrilling demonstration. Performing in the Yak 52TW, a 400-hp Soviet Trainer, the Aerostars fly within a few feet of each other at speeds exceeding 250 mph. From graceful formation loops and barrel rolls to a break-away cross, bomb bursts and opposing passes, the Aerostars make formation aerobatics look effortless. A unique design of the Yak 52 allows the Aerostars pilots to perform sustained inverted manuevers not possible in most other aircraft. The deep roar of three 9-cylinder radial engines singing in harmony and billowing smoke will surely bring crowds to their feet.

2013 Wings Over Coshocton AIR SHOW

Flying the DeHavilland Super Chipmunk, one of the classic aircraft of all times, Jim's performance is an aggressive display featuring tumbling lomcevaks and the always impressive 'Waldo Pepper' Loop. A unique aircraft, an 'edge of your seat' routine, and the multi-faceted talent of Jim Maroney, make the Super Chipmunk a 'must see' performance.
