fit you could hurt later,” Hardy said. She plans to have shoes on display at the expo along with different boot laces and Yaktraxs. “You can put Yaktraxs on your shoes and they help you walk on ice,” Hardy said. “They’d be good for delivery people and helping them from falling and hurting themselves.” People who stop by the Shoe Sensation booth will have the opportunity get giveaways with the store logo on them, win one of four $10 gift cards and have their feet measured to find out what size shoe they wear. “If you aren’t wearing the right shoes or size you could end up with health problems in places like your back or your legs,” Hardy said. The company’s new children’s charity coordinator also will be there promoting how they try to help children in the community. “I’m excited to be at the expo,” Hardy said. “I’m looking forward to meeting people and seeing new faces.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

The Health, Safety and Wellness Expo isn’t just about doctors and medical tests. Denise Hardy, store manager at Shoe Sensation, is ready to show attendees how the right shoes can make a world of difference in their lives. “We always try to get out in the community and get our name out there, but we also want people to know we do a lot with safety shoes,” she said. “We have everything from steel toe, slip resistant to electrical hazard shoes. If we don’t know something we can get our book out and help you find the shoe you need. There also is the voucher program where you can come in and get the shoes you need, we bill your company and then they take it out of your paycheck.” There are even shoes out there that could help people with certain medical conditions. “In men’s we have a shoe with Velcro that could help someone with diabetes that deals with swelling,” Hardy said. “Then there is the Skecher GOwalk shoe that is real light weight and has memory foam and would be good for someone that had a stroke and has trouble walking. We’ve also had people come in that have a brace on their foot and can help them find a shoe that fits.” Employees also can help you find the right shoe for running, walking or for a job that requires you to spend a lot of time standing on your feet. “If you are working out and don’t have the proper shoe or

From the moment a woman finds out she is expecting another addition to the family, she does everything in her power to make sure that child is safe and healthy. There are many decisions to make before the birth of her child, but one decision will help secure the safety of her child for many years. Despite parents’ best intentions, three out of four car seats are improperly installed, which presents a danger to the child in the event of an accident. When choosing a car seat, it’s best that you first check your vehicle’s manual to see which type of car seat best fits your vehicle and which will best fit your child. It is also important to ensure that the car seat has not expired and there

have been no recalls on the model you decide to purchase. When it comes to installing your car seat, make sure you first read through the car seat manual to ensure proper installation. “Every car seat is different and every vehicle is different,” said Kimberly Schwind, senior public relations manager at AAA Ohio Auto Club, Zanesville. “The best advice is to thoroughly read the owner’s manual for the car seat and the vehicle. The big manual that comes with your car seat, that’s your best friend. That’s going to have all the information you need. In your vehicle manual, there’s also a section in there on how to properly install a car seat.” AAA Auto Club also offers free car seat inspection. Some of the most common mistakes in car seat usage include using both the LATCH system and the seat belt, incorrect recline angles for infants, not installing the car seat tight enough, harness straps too loose, chest clip positioned too low, and wearing bulky clothing while riding in a car seat. “More than half of the seats that come in for inspection, there’s something wrong with them,” said Schwind. “You want to use the car seat the way it was crash-tested. The car seat shouldn’t move more than one inch at the belt pass. If you have an infant car seat, make sure the seat is at its proper recline angle. Infants’ heads are heavier than the rest of their body and if the car seat isn’t at its proper recline angle, they could suffocate.” With the cold weather in Ohio, many parents purchase heavy coats for their children, which is great for playing outdoors, but should never be worn while in a car seat. “If you have to loosen straps to put coats under them, the coat is too heavy,” said Schwind. “This creates a slack in the harness system, and if there was a crash, it puts more stress on the child and can cause internal injuries.” Make sure the harness is secure and snug and that the chest clip is positioned at armpit level. If the chest clip is too low, it can cause internal injuries during an accident. An infant should be in a rear-facing car seat in the center of the back seat of the car until about the age of two or until SEE ‘CAR SEAT’ ON PAGE 5-B

they have reached about 35 pounds. A rear-facing car seat should never be placed in the front seat of a vehicle. When it’s time to switch to a front-facing toddler car seat, your child should be about 35 pounds and should still be placed in the center of the car and always in the back seat. Children should be placed in a booster seat when they reach between 40 and 65 pounds until they are at least four feet, nine inches tall and are usually between the ages 8 and 12 years old. Booster seats should always be installed in the back seat. “If the child is taken out of the booster seat too soon and you’re in a crash, the seat belt can cause internal injuries,” said Schwind. When a child can sit with their back straight against the vehicle back seat cushion and knees bent over the seat edge without slouching, they can wear an adult seat belt. Children under the age of 13 should still remain in the back seat until that age due to basic child development. For more information on car seat safety, visit safeseats4kids.aaa.com. Skin Cancer Screenings Doctors Hoang Lim and Keith Harmon are general surgeons with the Coshocton Surgical Center and will be at the health expo to provide free screenings of skin lesions to help determine if a suspicious mole or skin lesion requires further analysis. If it is an area of concern, they will work with the individual to schedule an appointment to have it removed and analyzed. This is a great opportunity to have a surgeon look at an area that is causing concern and find out if it needs further evaluation. These screenings are free and will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The surgeons are also available to answer questions about other important screenings such as colonoscopies and to discuss the advantages of minimally invasive surgical procedures. Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) Screenings A simple, painless PAD screening takes only a few minutes to check for potential blockage in the arteries of the legs that can be a sign of a widespread problem of narrowed arteries blocking blood flow to your extremities and to the brain. People at risk for this life-altering problem include those with diabetes, high blood pressure or a history of coronary artery disease. Those with these risks, or symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the legs, loss of hair on toes or feet, and cramping in the legs that is relieved with rest, should be sure to participate in the free P.A.D. screenings, available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Blood Draws Coshocton Hospital Laboratory is offering blood screenings beginning at 9 a.m. For best results, participants are advised to fast for 12 hours prior to completing the test. The tests and pricing are as follows: • CBC (Complete Blood Count) – $12 • Chem 8 (Glucose, BUN, Creatinine, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Carbon Dioxide, and Calcium) – $11 • Lipid Profile (Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL) – $18 • TSH (Thyroid Stimulation Hormone) – $24 • A1C – $14 Total for all - $79
