From the Publisher... Welcome to the second annual edition of “Faith Renewed”. While this section provides information on upcoming church Easter services and programs, the overall purpose is much deeper. Including a directory of churches pulled from the 2010 edition of Portrait Magazine, “Faith Renewed” has articles on the lighthouse at Gospel Hill, Camp Echoing Hills, Missionary Maintenance Service, Women of Witness and more. If you know of a group, service or organization that should be included in a section of this focus, please let me know via email at: mark@coshoctoncountybeacon.com. As we move into spring and beyond the harshness and darkness of this past winter, the promise of spring endures with the constant singing of the birds, greening of the grass and blueness of the skies. Life is often like this. Challenges come at us on a daily basis – with some being more formidable than others. Sickness, health issues, old age and financial crisis loom large on our plates with seemingly nowhere to turn for hope. The goal of “Faith Renewed” is to provide you with articles on the people, groups and organizations that are keeping the faith in our community and are working hard to provide a spirit of optimism and filling unmet needs. As I write this introduction I know we missed several of these and can hopefully resolve that in an upcoming issue of The Coshocton County Beacon. Coshocton County remains a community filled with positive, optimistic and caring people. Friends and neighbors are helping one another,

Others work two or more jobs just to make ends meet, or are working at a job that fails to meet even their basic needs. So where can a person turn during these challenging times? The churches, groups and organizations contained in these pages all have a mission that provides a spirit of community, faith and fellowship. Find a group that fills your passion and start helping others. Only when we are helping others do we become truly empowered in the image that man was created. Regardless of your situation – helping someone else puts things into perspective and helps you realize that you are not alone and the entire world is not against you. Constantly fighting the upstream current can only work for so long as the adult salmon annually discovers. When exhausted, you need somewhere – and someone – to turn to. Find your solace and strength in these words; The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him. Teens today have so many negative influences in their lives. These influences may even come from adults who are only trying to help. These caring adults usually preach to the teen what not to do and how not to screw up their lives. Joel Penton, 2006 graduate of the Ohio State University, takes these concerns and spins them into a motivational speech. Joel will be speaking at the men’s gathering on May 21 at the Retreat Center in Warsaw at 8 p.m. His speeches are geared toward a male audience and any man in the community is welcome to attend. Mark Schwartz, camp manager at Camp Warsaw Retreat Center, first heard Joel speak at a state retreat. “His testimony of playing at a top-notch college and having the opportunity to play professionally and also realizing he could impact the lives of kids and the community is worth more than any amount of money,” said Schwartz, “He turned down a lot of opportunities to help change the lives of others.” Joel is a 2006 graduate of The Ohio State University and a former defensive tackle for their football team. In his senior year, Joel recorded a sack in the victory over Michigan and gave Ohio State their first Big Ten Championship since 1984. He also received the Danny Wuerffel

To each of us the words ‘summer camp’ bring back memories of campfires, horseback riding, splashing in a pool, hay wagon rides as the sun sets and laying in a field telling stories under the big open star-lit sky. However, for most people facing a disability, the words ‘summer camp’ take on a completely different meaning. To them these words mean it’s something I might never have the opportunity to do. Something I might never enjoy. Something I might never get to experience. Camp Echoing Hills offers this priceless opportunity to over 500 individuals with special needs each summer. However, it is so much more than just a summer camp experience. It is Hope. And, it is healing. Camp Echoing Hills encourages campers to reach beyond their limitations through participation in dozens of fun and therapeutic programs including swimming, horseback riding,
fishing, archery, team sports, arts and crafts, a nature program, and much more. They create the kind of experiences upon which to build hope, trust and healing which is an essential component in their challenging daily lives. so busy taking care of others. “Typically by the third day here they are learning how to relax and enjoy their time with God,” she said. “We have three things we don’t allow them to talk about while they are here—theology, doctrine and ‘shop talk’. These are all important, but just not here. The spouses really appreciate the ‘no shop talk’.” The Lembkes say that they have seen amazing things happen with pastors while staying at their inn. “The things the Holy Spirit does here is just phenomenal,” Nancy said. “The pastors truly need to get refreshed and renewed and that is what this ministry offers them. We had one pastor who told us that before he arrived he had decided to give his church his resignation but while he was staying with us, the Holy Spirit
worked through him and By jan myeRs by the end of the week, he knew what God wanted him to do.” Nancy says that she and Dan have noticed that a pastor’s life is rather lonely and guarded and that most people sitting in the pews at a church don’t realize that. “We try to give them hugs while they are here because many of them say they rarely get hugged,” said Nancy. Part of the mission at A Valley View Inn is to create an atmosphere where God can enhance relationships with the Lord. Their vision is to provide a safe place where God’s people can experience the four elements that sustain life in both the spiritual and natural realm—light, food, water, and rest. “We also have the option to offer the facility to other church retreat groups such as a women’s bible study group or a church council,” said Nancy. So far, A Valley View Inn has seen pastors representing 108 denominations from 57 countries and 6 continents. They even have had quite a few repeat guests. “It’s been a journey of faith,” admits Nancy. “God brought us on this journey to this ministry and we are always looking forward to where He will take us next.” For more information about A Valley View Inn, visit their website at www. In 1993, Dan and Nancy Lembke opened A Valley View Inn on State Route 643 near New Bedford. The Lembkes are originally from Toledo where their hobby of raising registered Belgian horses introduced them to the Amish in this area who purchased some of the horses. “We just fell in love with the area,” said Nancy Lembke. “We feel like we are just part of the neighborhood now since moving here in 1993.” On their 42-acre farm in Coshocton County, they continue to raise Belgians along with running the inn. The inn was originally built as a bed and breakfast for tourists visiting the area. “We had grown our occupancy rate to 90%,” Nancy said. “Then when 9-11 hit in 2001, occupancy fell to 5%. We knew we needed to see where the Lord had direction for us.” Nancy says they had been in contact with the Pastor’s Retreat Network in Wisconsin. In 2002 the president of that company visited A Valley View Inn and expressed interest in including the inn as part of their company’s network. “It is a ministry for pastors and their spouses to receive a week of rest and renewal,” explained Nancy. “We can take up to six couples a week. There is a simple program provided, but no real agenda. The only real requirement is that they need to attend the noon meal each day.” Nancy says it is often very difficult for pastors to slow down and relax since their schedules are

Final season for Behold the Lamb at Coshocton Nazarene By BeTh dulaney For almost twenty years, the Coshocton Nazarene Church has been portraying the life, death, and miraculous resurrection of Jesus Christ with their Easter musical, Behold the Lamb. This year will be no exception. However, this is the last year for this particular stage production. The walls of the Worship Center have been transformed back to 33 A.D. to the streets of Jerusalem. Roman soldiers wander through the audience asking for the man called Jesus and Jewish peasants walk through the city selling their wares and socializing with their neighbors. Once the play begins, audience members are drawn into this world of Jerusalem 33 A.D. and actors portray their parts so convincingly, that it’s almost like witnessing the real thing. “Playing Jesus Christ is overwhelming,” said Bryan Hardesty, “It’s one of those things that you’re trying to play Christ, but as a Christian, you want to be like Christ.” Sadly though, this is the last year for Behold the Lamb. However, the Nazarene Church will be back next year with a new production that has not yet been decided. It will still be an Easter story and of course, the ending won’t change. Kris Hardesty, director of the play, said she wanted to be open to whatever God has in store for next year’s production and that she’s still in the “praying phase” of the process. Hopefully, next year’s production will have the same effect on audience members as Behold the Lamb. For the last twenty years, people have flocked to see this play. “It’s not just a fable or a myth,” said Kris Hardesty, “It’s real. That hope resonates in our daily walk and that’s what drives us. It’s that hope of eternal life.”

Rehearsal for the play started in late January. However, the cast had to overcome some obstacles to get to where they are now. The harsh winter canceled a lot of rehearsals, and a possible gas leak in the church, which thankfully turned out to be a false alarm, sent all cast and crew members running home late one night. A lot of time and effort goes into putting on this production every year. Not only from the actors, but the many musicians who create the beautiful music throughout the play. When watching the play, it’s definitely evident that these actors and musicians put a lot of themselves into their characters. With that comes a lot of mental preparation before the play as well. Bryan Hardesty said about mentally preparing himself for the role every night, “You find yourself saying the same things that you would say in prayer.” The final production of Behold the Lamb will be March 26, 27, 28 and April 1, 2, 3. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the church office, Good News Book Store, Bakers, Buehlers, and GA Fisher. “We hope and trust that the Spirit will move and open eyes to the resurrection power,” said Kris Hardesty, “I don’t think the world will change the way we want it to until He comes back. We know our world is broken. Things fail. Politics fail, businesses fail. A few years earlier, Ron contacted Nussbaum Construction in Orville, OH, which dealt in constructing grain bins and silos, but when he spoke to the director of the company, Claire Nussbaum, he jumped at Ron’s idea and wanted to get started right away. Claire was a born-again Christian and had heard Ron speak at different events. When construction finally began, Nussbaum had sold his company and retired, but stood by his promise to help Ron’s vision become a reality. “It shows me how real God is,” said Ron, “Take a little country boy out here, speak to him, give him a vision, and make it a reality really increases how real God is to me. If God gives you a vision, stay by faith. It increased my faith when my vision became a reality. God will really do what He says.”

Sixty volunteers helped construct the lighthouse. Some professional workers had to be hired to make sure state requirements were met, but Ron had no trouble with the state. The International Chimney Corp, who moved the Cape Hatteras lighthouse 2,900 feet from its original site because of shoreline erosion, made the trip from Buffalo, NY to help advice Ron on its construction. There were no injuries during construction, and except for a heavy rain in November of 2002 that filled the base of the lighthouse, there were no major problems. Now, Ron can stand on the observation deck of the lighthouse and look down at the house where he grew up and where his vision of a lighthouse at Gospel Hill first began. The completed lighthouse stands 74 feet high, twenty-six feet wide in diameter, and has seventy-six steps to the top. It is an exact replica of what Ron saw in his vision from God. Every night, the light shines down through the hills at Gospel Hill Ministry and Ron hopes that people who see it will be reminded that Jesus is the real lighthouse to the world. “Jesus is the light in their lives,” said Ron, “They don’t have to have a physical lighthouse. He can be their lighthouse. I hope it draws people together in unity for prayer.” The public is welcome to visit Gospel Hill Ministries and tour the lighthouse. It is open every weekday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and opens by appointment on the weekends and in the evenings. There is no cost, but donations are appreciated. When evangelist Ron Davis was a little boy, he used to wander the hills where Gospel Hill now stands and imagine a lighthouse standing on top of the hill in his backyard. He imagined what it would look like and what purpose it would have here in Coshocton County. In April of 1976, Ron had a vision. While kneeling at the altar one morning in Ashton, IL, he looked up and saw his imaginary lighthouse, only this time, it was as real to him as if one was actually standing before him. The Lord spoke to him in this vision and said, “I want you to build a lighthouse and it will draw many people to Gospel Hill. It is to be used as a place of prayer and most of all, it will represent Jesus, the true lighthouse to the world.” Twenty-six years later, Ron’s vision became a reality. After returning to Gospel Hill in Warsaw, Ohio, he began by founding the Gospel Hill Ministry. The ministry began to grow in the late 1980s and the church started to expand. Additions were added to the church in later years, but none is so impressive and makes such a statement as the 74-foot high lighthouse. So far, visitors from thirty-four states and thirteen foreign countries have come to see the lighthouse, which is part of the reason why the lighthouse was built. Once the people have come to the lighthouse, whether out of curiosity or seeking the Word of God, the lighthouse serves its second purpose: revealing Jesus Christ as the true Light of the world. But the lighthouse’s main purpose is a place of prayer. There are prayer meetings in the lighthouse every morning on the prayer level, which is just a simple room with a desk and a few chairs on the second level of the lighthouse. For over twenty years, the Grace United Methodist Church hand bell choir has been blessing this community with the sound of music. The hand bell choir plays a variety of music including gospel, spiritual, classical, and various hymn arrangements. They ring their bells the first Sunday of every month at the traditional worship service at Grace United Methodist Church. But they don’t stop there. This hand bell choir plays for the Habitat for Humanity concert, which will be at the Presbyterian Church on March 27. Hand bell choirs from all around the area come to the concert and perform separately. At the end of the concert, all the choirs come together and ring their bells harmoniously for a grand finale. A donation is taken during the concert with 100% of the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. In addition to that, the Grace United Methodist Church hand bell choir has performed at the Coshocton Community Choir’s concert. Last year, they performed a beautiful rendition of the Catalan Christmas carol, “Fum, Fum, Fum”. The hand bell choir practices every Wednesday night for one hour at the Grace United Methodist Church. They work on their musical selections two months in advance to

Each plane takes anywhere between six months to three years to complete. “Maintenance is ministry,” said Dwight Jarboe, president and CEO, “Every Christian person is called to represent Christ where they are. By maintaining airplanes, it frees or multiplies the time available for the people who go out and do ministry.” Although MMS Aviation mainly maintains aircraft, they also have a Rapid Response program. Mission agencies notify MMS and request on-the-site assistance. The last Rapid Response location MMS responded was in Florida where they repaired a plane ready to take off for Haiti. They also helped airplanes arrive safely in Thailand after the tsunami struck the day after Christmas in 2005. MMS Aviation has helped an average of fifteen faith-based organizations annually. They are funded through contributions and have sponsors to help pay the staff paychecks and general operating donors to help with the general operating costs. These sponsors are from all over the world. “What is so rewarding is that the Gospel of Christ is advancing all around the world,” said Jarboe. When you think of missionaries, a mental image of someone trekking through the wild jungles of Africa or scoring mountains to spread the Word of God comes to mind. But Missionary Maintenance in Coshocton County is taking missionaries to new heights. In 1975, MMS Aviation began work on its first airplane. All airplanes that come into the program are used somewhere in the world for ministry. Each staff member at MMS Aviation walks daily with the Lord and is trained as an apprentice. This way, the program doesn’t charge the Christian ministries time or labor, which saves them thousands of dollars. However, they are charged for materials. Through this 30 month apprenticeship program, the apprentices can also experience multiple hands-on training and can receive their FAA mechanics certificate for air frame and power plant rating. The MMS Aviation mainly focuses on airplane maintenance. Their main goal is to prepare people and planes for worldwide mission service. What would originally have been a two week hike to reach a certain destination is now covered in a couple of hours. This way, the missionaries are no longer in potentially dangerous situations. Now, they are able to reach more places and spread the love of Jesus Christ that had previously been inaccessible.

‘Empowering women through faithful acts of kindness’ is the sole purpose of Women Of Witness (WOW), a local non-profit organization started in the late 1990s in Coshocton by founder Lena Crouso. This unique, nondenominational group of women come together to meet numerous needs in our community through projects such as their annual Helping Hands school supply drive, jail ministry, youth mentoring program, and payer quilt ministry. Crouso says she was inspired to organize this group after praying for guidance in how to share God’s love. “I saw the love of God impact

my life and transform me in an incredible way,” she said. “I saw that sharing God’s love through kindness was a real way to be the extended hand of God and out of that Women of Witness was born.” Crouso says they began to reach out to women and as they saw the needs. Whether physical, emotional or spiritual, they met the needs through faithful acts of kindness. “I knew there were other women in many different churches in our community who had the same burden for women and wanted to reach out, too,” she said. “This is what sparked the need to come together as a united group of women, without the church walls, to simply be God’s love to others. Our hope was that in this love of God they too would move from darkness into the LIGHT of CHRIST and meet Jesus as we had. His love is transformational!” Crouso says Women Of Witness has continued to evolve over the years as the needs in the community have changed, yet the group has not strayed from its roots. “I am thankful to God for giving me this vision and watching it evolve and grow,” she said. “We are definitely a grassroots movement using the gifts and talents of Christian women to love others. The ministry has grown and yet remained very much true to who we have always said we are—to be the extended hand of God here on earth.” One exciting way WOW is evolving is by moving beyond the boundaries of Coshocton County by establishing an international arm. Crouso says the group trusts the Lord to use this ministry as a bridge of love and hope in the lives of women all over the country and the world. “Last year we chartered the non-profit ministry WOW International,” explained Crouso. “It is now the umbrella under which WOW Coshocton exists. With this in mind, we are now being invited into other communities who also desire to establish their own WOW ministry in their communities. We have had over 50 women serve in leadership roles and over 200 women who have partnered with WOW Coshocton to make a difference in the lives of others through.
