By Beth Scott Gallagher has been with Thompkins Treatment, Inc. since 1998 and uses behavioral intervention to help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Thompkins Treatment, formerly known as Thompkins Adolescent and Children Services, is a non-profit organization that has been treating children two years to 18 years who may exhibit behavior of depression or anxiety. Recently, they started accepting adult patients as well. Depression and anxiety affects each person differently. Some of the main symptoms are loss of interest in activities, withdrawing from family and friends, eating too much or too little, and sleeping too much or too little. While many think of depression as sadness, teens especially tend to express their depression through angry outbursts. “Parents need to talk to their kids,” said Gallagher. “They need to point out the changes they’re seeing in their children’s attitude or behavior and ask them what it’s all about.” In some cases, children and teens who experience depression feel they can’t approach their parents for support. According to Gallagher, there are many other adults they can turn to for support such as a youth pastor, a friend of the family, or guidance counselors at school. “Guidance counselors in schools are doing a great job identifying kids with mental health issues and getting them connected to the resources available,” said Gallagher. Social media has also played a large factor in the increase in teen depression as it can be used as a platform for bullying. Depression can also stem from long periods of inactivity. “It’s important to get out in the fresh air with the sunshine,” said Gallagher. “Do some physical activities. It doesn’t matter what you do, just make sure you get some type of physical activity. Any exercise you get releases endorphins that help battle depression.” Gallagher encourages parents to keep their children involved in social activities and to do fun activities together as a family, and to support one another through open communication. COSHOCTON – Depression and anxiety in young children and teens has been steadily rising throughout the last few years and could be due to more stress at home and in the classroom, the type of music they listen to, movies they watch, and video games they play. Fortunately, treatment for and awareness of mental health has also increased. “People are more aware of mental health issues now,” said Chris Gallagher, LSW/PCC-S at Thompkins Treatment, Inc. “Mental health issues are being put out there to be talked about. Years ago, it wasn’t talked about and families actually hid members with mental health problems. People still do that today, but not as much. There’s not so much of a stigma attached to it anymore.”

All of our residents enjoy:

that people do a 12 hour fast prior to the tests and have only water during that time frame. She also noted that results will be sent to participants’ physicians, they can stop by the hospital lab to get them or they can access the results through the hospital’s online health portal. “We will also be there doing a big focus on online health records,” Given said. “You can go online and compare your tests results from year to year, see when you were in the ER or admitted to the hospital and even see what allergies we have listed for you. As time marches forward you will have a big bank of records.” The program is extremely safe and also can help families keep track of minor children’s records or with proper consent, view the information of parents they may help care for. Given said the hospital also will have representatives from other departments at the expo. Attendees will have the chance to learn about cardiac diagnostic and rehabilitation services and stress tests and EKGs; get healthy eating tips from food and nutrition employees; meet and greet nurse practitioners; get a pulse oximetry test to see how oxygen is flowing in their blood stream; and learn how to improve their balance, avoid sports injuries and what the Graston Technique is at the physical and occupational therapists’ table. “We want to help people be more aware,” Given said. “We’ve been at events before where we’ve found people who needed to go to the ER for their own safety. You can be a walking time bomb and not know it.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

SELF DEFENSE Brad Birkhimer and James Wilson are both trained martial artists who want to use their knowledge to help people learn the basics of self defense. “We want to teach them how to be aware, avoid situations and if they find themselves physically confronted be able to end it in a very short fashion,” Birkhimer said. Their self defense class is designed for people of a variety of ages and levels of physical ability and they also are working on a class just for children. “We want to give people the confidence and ability to not be afraid of the unknown,” Wilson said. Because their business is mobile, they also plan to host classes at a variety of locations. To learn more about the new Mobile Martial Arts business, visit their booth at the Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Kids America. Third annual Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo coming up COSHOCTON – Amy Stockdale, executive director of the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, is super excited for the upcoming third annual Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo. “Last year there was someone there who had their blood pressure checked and it was sky high,” Stockdale said. “We got them to the ER and helped save a life. That’s what we want to do, get people healthier and teach them to be safer.” The third annual Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Kids America, 1660 Otsego Ave. The event is co-sponsored by the Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, Coshocton County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) and Coshocton County Safety Council. Admission to the expo is free and there will be more than 35 exhibitors, kids’ activities, numerous health screenings, and wellness and safety information. “I think we have as many new vendors as we do returning ones,” Stockdale said. “We also have more safety type people this year and a lot of the vendors will have door prizes.” She also was excited to report that the Walhonding Valley Fire Department will have a booth with fire safety information and bring equipment to look at, MedFlight plans to land at Kids America and Dingo the Deputy Dog from the Sheriff’s Office will again visit the expo. “Last year the kids loved Dingo,” Stockdale said. Fun activities for the kids also are being planned by Miss Jenni-

fer’s Dance Studio, which is located in Kids America, and by the Youth Asset Leadership Team (YALT) from Coshocton Behavioral Health Choices. Another key part of the expo is the flu shots that will be available from Interim Healthcare and the blood tests that Coshocton Hospital and Health Services of Coshocton will be partnering to offer the public. Results will be sent to the patient’s physician. The tests that will offered for a reasonable fee include: CBC (Complete Blood Count); Chem8 (Glucose, BUN, Creatinine, Potassium, Chloride, Carbon Dioxide, and Calcium) test; Lipid Profile test; Thyroid Stimulation Hormone test; and the A1C test. There will also be many other free health screenings offered such as blood pressure screenings and a Dermascan. “This is an event that really highlights services that are available right here in your own community,” Stockdale said. Last year more than 500 people attended the free, family friendly event. “You can stay 30 minutes or you can stay three hours,” Stockdale said. “We had people throughout the whole expo last year and even children were walking around, finding out about services and really participating.” For information about the Health, Safety and Wellness Expo on Saturday, Jan. 17, call the Coshocton Chamber of Commerce at 6225411.
