Double stabbing in La Regia results in psychiatric evaluation

A 38-year-old Bulgarian man has been arrested for allegedly trying to murder his brother-in-law after an argument turned violent at the family home in La Regia, Orihuela Costa. The 62-year-old was stabbed in the neck and his wife, the attacker´s sister, also sustained knife wounds during the incident.

Investigating court number 2 in Orihuela

has sent the man to the psychiatric hospital at Fontcalent Prison where he will be evaluated after relatives reported that he suffers from schizophrenia.

According to the Civil Guard the attack took place at 5.30pm at a house where the married couple and the woman`s brother lived together. The wife heard loud noises coming from upstairs and found her brother attacking her husband, stabbing him in the neck with a knife. She suffered knife wounds to her hands as she tried to defend her husband and wrestle the knife from her brother.

The attacker fled the scene by car and the injured couple were rushed to Torrevieja Hospital. The woman was released later the same evening whilst her husband underwent emergency surgery for the injuries to his neck.

Guardia Civil officers from Almoradi inspected the crime scene and located the knife used in the incident, whilst colleagues launched a search for the attacker. Traffic monitoring showed that the vehicle had initially headed towards

Andalusia, but later doubled back and returned to Alicante Province. The man was finally arrested two days later in Pilar de la Horadada.

He will now be evaluated, and a medical treatment plan will be put in place before a decision is made regarding his culpability.

Man arrested for robbery at Playa Flamenca restaurant

The Orihuela Local Police arrested a man in Orihuela Costa accused of an alleged crime of robbery with force. The events were brought to the attention of the Orihuela police after the owner of a restaurant on Calle Orquídeas at Playa Flamenca promenade, saw that someone was robbing his restaurant through the security cameras.

The man called the 112-emergency number and o cers rushed to the scene.

Aa they arrived o cers saw a man and a woman acting suspiciously and proceeded to identify them. Next them there were two laptops, a tablet, a mobile phone, a cash register drawer full of coins and a set of keys. The owner of the restaurant then arrived

at the scene and con rmed that the objects were his property and that they had been inside the premises that day.

The o cers subsequently carried out a visual inspection of the restaurant and observed that the lock on one of the access doors had been forced and broken, the door being found open when they arrived and the interior of

the premises was in disarray, particularly in the bar area, where the cash register was located. They also found a screwdriver and a wrench among the belongings of the alleged burglar.

The Orihuela Local Police proceeded to arrest the alleged burglar and to initiate the corresponding judicial proceedings in light of the events.

How Orihuela plans to raise 20 million EU funding

Orihuela is seeking to be a benchmark in sustainability and quality of life, promoting inclusive and equitable development and at the same time strengthening its historical and cultural wealth. To this end, it has proposed implementing an Integrated Action Plan (PAI) that includes projects to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants through urban regeneration, heritage protection and resistance to natural disasters and climate change, as well as the digitalisation of services and the integration of disadvantaged groups.

Within the framework of the Local Integrated Development Strategy (EDIL), the City Council intends to obtain funding of up to 20 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), rea rming its commitment to the Urban Agenda. Its approval is expected by resolution of the Mayor next week.

The plan includes nine major projects between 2026 and 2029. The rst block involves the transformation of the city, focusing on the integration of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods and the improvement of services. It includes the rehabilitation of the Teatro Circo and its surroundings as a cultural space, with an investment

of 2.8 million euros.

The redevelopment of the entrance to the city via Avenida de la Constitución to the historic centre to promote integration with the city of one of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods will be allocated 5.6 million. Work will be carried out in Plaza de la Salud and Calle Hospital to eliminate architectural barriers, widen pavements and improve the surroundings of emblematic buildings such as the Rubalcava Palace and the Municipal Library. In addition, the children’s play area will be renovated, turning the square into a meeting place for residents and visitors.

Another project is the rehabilitation of the Regional Archaeological Museum (1.6 million), restoring the most deteriorated areas of the old San Juan de Dios Hospital.

The Plaza Santa Lucía and adjacent streets will also be completely renovated to improve pedestrian mobility and accessibility (1.2 million), eliminating architectural barriers, installing shaded areas and expanding rest and play areas, in order to consolidate an axis of improvement in the centre of Orihuela.

With one million euros, the Miguel Hernández House Museum

and Birthplace and the museums of the Reconquista Wall will be digitalised.

In addition, the oldest and most leaky drinking water networks in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods (San Isidro, Rabaloche, Miguel Hernández and San Antón) will be replaced, which will cost 1.5 million.

Another 1.9 million will be allocated to transforming the Las Espeñetas park into a ood-prone park, adapting this space to function as a rainwater lamination and storage area, mitigating ood risks. Sustainable drainage techniques will be implemented, integrating the hydraulic infrastructure with a recreational and ecological design.

In a second block, the “connected and integrative Orihuela” has been designed , with initiatives aimed at promoting social inclusion and urban cohesion through the digitalisation of public services, educational training and the integration of vulnerable groups. The actions include the creation of smart city digital platforms to centralise the management of services such as security, transport and waste management , as well as an Open Data portal for citizen access to key information about the city (one million euros).

Truck hits cyclist in Pilar

A 20-year-old cyclist was injured this on the CV-930, near the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada, after colliding with a truck.

The call was received at around 2:35pm and a BLS unit and a medical helicopter based in the province were both dispatched to the scene,

according to the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU).

The cyclist was treated by medical services for multiple injuries. He was subsequently evacuated by air to the Doctor Balmis Hospital in Alicante to be treated for his injuries.

Irish man arrested with 18kg of drugs at Alicante-Elche Airport

An Irish passenger attempting to y from Alicante-Elche Airport to Liverpool was apprehended with 18 kilograms of hashish concealed in his suitcase.

The 36-year-old man was charged with drug tra cking and smuggling o ences. Following his court appearance in Elche, he exercised his right to remain silent and was subsequently granted bail. However, he is required to report to the court every 15 days as the

legal proceedings continue.

The discovery was made when a private security guard, monitoring luggage via X-ray screening, noticed suspicious acornshaped packages inside a suitcase. Alerted to the potential presence of illegal substances, the Guardia Civil intervened and intercepted the passenger at the boarding gate for his Ryanair ight to Liverpool.

Upon being escorted to luggage control, the man

complied with o cers as they opened his suitcase. Inside, along with his personal belongings, authorities uncovered multiple vacuum-sealed bags containing hashish.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody and later appeared before a judge in Elche. Further legal proceedings are expected as investigations continue into the attempted smuggling operation.

La Siesta ‘love triangle’ killer strikes deal

Wayne Walsh from Kilkennny, will serve a sentence of just six years in prison after a plea bargain deal for the September 2018 murder of Carl Carr, 38, at a property on Torrevieja’s La Siesta urbanisation. The Irishman beat his friend to death in a jealous rage.

Walsh had faced the possibility of spending nearly two decades behind bars for the killing before reaching a plea agreement that signi cantly reduces his sentence.

The 37-year-old, who had previously been caught boasting on TikTok that he was ‘chilling like a villain’ after securing bail ahead of trial, has now sealed a deal reducing his potential 18year sentence to just onethird of that term.

Despite confessing to Carl Carr’s homicide and unlawful possession of a rearm as part of the agreement, Walsh has been granted the unusual privilege of remaining on bail to settle his personal

a airs before serving his sentence. He has been ordered to surrender himself to authorities between 11th March and 20th March. Should he fail to comply, he faces immediate arrest.

Walsh and his friend Simon Fahy (who died in 2023 in a drug related incident) both of whom shared a at with Carl Carr, were accused of his killing which prosecutors claimed was “by common and prior

agreement, acting with the intention of ending his life.”

This came after Fahy told Walsh he had seen Carr having sex with Walsh´s ono girlfriend Milly Leonard.

Carl Carr’s body was discovered buried in woodland by the AP-7 motorway between the Costa Blanca towns of Benijofar and Algorfa at the end of January 2019, just over ve months after he was last seen.

‘Peace in Ukraine and EU security are two sides of the same coin,’ says Sanchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said that the EU faces a ‘de ning moment’ regarding the future security of Ukraine, and that ‘peace in Ukraine and EU security’ were ‘two sides of the same coin’.

His remarks followed an emergency summit in Paris, organised by French President Emmanuel Macron, where leaders from several EU nations, EU institutions, the UK, as well as NATO, discussed the future of Ukraine and European security amid uncertainty over the transatlantic alliance.

Macron had invited the leaders to his ornate Elysee Palace in reaction to the United States beginning direct negotiations with Russia about the future of Ukraine. The aim of the Paris summit was to discuss a joint EU stance on any possible peace

deal in response to the plans of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, who want to exclude Europeans and the Ukrainians out of their negotiations.

‘We need to stop underestimating ourselves,’ Sánchez told reporters after the summit. ‘Europe is a powerful political project and the world’s largest trading bloc. Together, we form the biggest economy in the world. We have capabilities, we have strengths, and we must continue expanding and reinforcing this great project for Europe and humanity.’

Sánchez welcomed the development of peace talks, saying the US was ‘laying the groundwork’ for talks ‘that could lead to peace’. But he also said that as no agreement has been reached, ‘the conditions for peace have not yet

been met for us to think about a plan’ – and that whatever deal is reached should include the ‘active involvement of the EU’.

‘We reiterate: this cannot be a false ending. This isn’t the rst time Russia has annexed territory … this must be a lasting and just peace,’ he said, referring to Moscow’s illegal 2014 takeover of Crimea.

The Spanish prime minister said that any just solution must involve Ukraine and the EU. He also said it should reinforce ‘multilateralism, international law and national sovereignty’ and lead to a stronger, more united Europe.

‘Ukraine’s struggle wasn’t just for its independence and freedom – it was for the defence of a model of peace, prosperity and respect for human rights,’ said Sánchez.

Rubiales fined for “that kiss”

The Spanish National High Court has sentenced Luis Rubiales, former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, for the unsolicited kiss on Jennifer Hermoso after the nal of the 2023 World Cup. Judge José Manuel Clemente Fernández-Prieto, head of the Central Criminal Court, imposed a ne of €10,800 for a crime of sexual assault, but acquitted Rubiales of allegedly coercing the player after the incident to publicly justify his actions.

The prosecution had sought two and a half years in prison for the former federation president. The ruling also prohibits Rubiales from approaching Hermoso within a radius of 200 meters and from communicating with her for a year, as well as obliging him to compensate the victim with €3,000 and to cover 50% of the costs of the judicial process, “excluding those caused by the class action” brought by the Spanish Footballers’ Association.

Judge Fernández-Prieto summarised his decision as follows: “It has been duly proven and is thus declared that on August 20, 2023, in Sydney, State of New South Wales,

Australia, on the occasion of the presentation of medals to the players of the Spanish women’s national soccer team after their victory in the World Cup nal, and at the moment when the player Jennifer Hermoso was receiving the formal greeting and congratulations from the defendant Luis Manuel Rubiales, the latter held the player’s head with both hands, and surprisingly and without the player’s consent or acceptance, gave her a kiss on the lips.”

After being banned by FIFA on 26th August, 2023, Rubiales eventually resigned as RFEF president on 10th September, 21 days after the kiss and amid strong public and political pressure to step aside.

The court showed clear support for the player’s account and her teammates in the locker room. The magistrate considered it proven that, after Hermoso had left the stage where the medal ceremony was held, she communicated “her displeasure” over the kiss to her brother, friends, and teammates and that, due to the unfolding scandal, the RFEF concocted a series of schemes for the victim to publicly justify Rubiales’

actions. In this sense, for example, the judge stated that Vilda approached the player’s brother on the plane back to Spain and told him that, “if the situation became more complicated, heads would roll and things would not go well for [Hermoso] or for anyone else.” These manoeuvres continued in Ibiza, where the team travelled to celebrate the title, on the part of Luque and Rivera.

Despite considering all this to be proven, Fernández-Prieto concluded that there was no act of “violence” or “intimidation” that could be considered a crime, as required by legislation and jurisprudence. The sentence can be appealed before the Criminal Chamber of the National High Court. The Prosecutor’s O ce, which requested a prison sentence for all the defendants, will decide whether to le such a motion after studying the resolution in depth, according to sources from the constitutional body. Sources from Rubiales’ defence team con rmed that they will appeal.

Cambiemos Orihuela to question tree felling plans

Cambiemos Orihuela announced today that it will submit a question for the February ordinary plenary session to inquire about any plans to address the tree felling that has occurred in the city in recent years. The party criticizes the Infrastructure department for its “abandonment” over the past eight years. However, they also emphasize that the current government team is responsible for

ensuring the conservation and replacement of Orihuela’s tree heritage.

To address this issue, they plan to question the Department of the Environment during the plenary session about whether there is a plan to replace all the trees that have been cut down. They also want to know if the Municipal Ordinance for the Promotion and Protection of the Date Palm is being

followed, which requires the planting of a new palm tree on the same plot whenever one is cut down.

Quique Montero, a councillor for Cambiemos, expressed his concern over the situation, pointing out that it follows the fall of a banana tree a few months ago and the recent felling of two more trees last week. He attributes these incidents to “a lack of work and planning.”

Top Court Awards €95K to Torrevieja Officer for Harassment

The Constitutional Court of Spain has ruled in favor of a Torrevieja police o cer who claimed workplace harassment by the municipal government. The unanimous decision awards him €95,816 in damages, plus interest from 2016, and underscores the need for better protections for o cers.

The court, led by Justice María Luisa Segoviano Astaburuaga, found that the o cer’s rights to physical and moral integrity were violated between April 2013 and September 2016. The harassment began after he reported irregularities in cash handling from nes and selective inspections of local businesses.

The o cer faced unannounced schedule changes, denied vacation requests, shifts without breaks, withdrawal of his service weapon, noti cations to tra c authorities questioning

his driving capability, and denial of additional pay and bene ts. Witnesses con rmed a toxic work environment marked by daily insults and humiliations from colleagues and superiors, ultimately leading to his resignation.

The harassment was o cially reported in 2016, but no investigation followed. Legal proceedings began in 2017, and the Constitutional Court issued its nal ruling in 2023.

This case is part of a larger issue within Torrevieja’s

police department, with over €200,000 spent on harassment cases involving at least seven o cers in the past 15 years. The ruling highlights failures by the municipal government, particularly under Mayor Eduardo Dolón and Security Councilor Agustina Esteve, to address the problem.

The verdict stresses the need for stronger antiharassment policies and serves as a reminder to local governments about their responsibility to protect employee rights and maintain a respectful workplace.

Guardia Civil dismantles a cyber fraud gang for 180,000 euros car scam

The Guardia Civil has dismantled a cyber fraud gang operating in Torrevieja, Orihuela, and surrounding areas, which used advanced identity theft and document forgery methods to scam auto dealers. The operation, named “Saxum24,” led to the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of vehicles worth over €180,000.

The investigation began in August 2024 after a vehicle sales company reported suspicious transactions in dealerships across Torrevieja, Orihuela, and Elche. The gang targeted victims by posting fake real estate ads to collect personal and nancial details from those seeking rental properties. They then used this information to apply for fraudulent loans and buy vehicles under false identities.

SNOW ON THE COSTA BLANCA?..

It may look like it, though this is actually the spectacular Salt Water Trail of Albatera located in the Vega Baja Region. Known to locals as the Ruta Rambla Salada, this trek consists of impressive geological rock formations, natural salt springs, clear water pools, and a series of old aqueducts. The salt that you see along the way arises from contact between the permeable materials like limestone and sandstone, with the impermeable materials like clays and gypsum. The filtration of rainwater between the rocks pushes water with very high salt levels outwards, forming this beautiful landscape. In addition to the huge amount of salt accumulated in the

bed of the boulevard, as well as the brown coloration due to the oxidation of the minerals, some large rocks that can be found on the route really stand out, such as the Barrón Negro or the large green ophite rocks. This route is of medium to high difficulty with a duration of up to four hours, and includes some steep rocky pathways. Dogs are permitted along this route, though there is no wheelchair or pushchair access.

Urgent call for more nursing staff in Orihuela

The Nursing Union (SATSE) has raised serious concerns about the ongoing shortage of nurses in the Orihuela Health Department, which is impacting patient care and straining working conditions for existing staff. Despite repeated requests for more hires, the situation remains critical as the healthcare system struggles to meet growing demands.

The Orihuela Health Department is currently relying on temporary contracts of just three to five days to address its nursing shortages.

However, SATSE argues that this short-term approach is inadequate to relieve the increasing pressure on healthcare workers. The union has called for at least 14 additional nurses specifically for Emergency Services, emphasizing that the reliance on temporary contracts prevents the stability needed for

effective patient care.

SATSE insists that structural solutions are necessary, urging for stable and sufficient hiring practices rather than temporary fixes. On January 8, the Orihuela Health Department requested authorization from the Conselleria de Sanidad to hire more nurses on two-month contracts, but no action has been taken. SATSE criticizes the delay in processing these requests, pointing to a lack of commitment from health authorities.

The shortage of nursing staff is affecting not only the efficiency of the healthcare system but also patient safety and the mental well-being of nurses. The increased workload is leading to burnout among existing staff and compromising the quality of care. SATSE emphasizes the need to prioritize patient

safety and maintain healthcare standards.

In response to the staffing crisis, SATSE is committed to pressuring health authorities to allocate necessary resources and ensure equitable healthcare services for residents in Vega Baja, comparable to those in other regions of Valencia. The union is pushing for long-term staffing solutions to provide quality patient care and protect the well-being of healthcare professionals.

The ongoing nursing shortage in the Orihuela Health Department demands immediate and strategic action. SATSE continues to advocate for structural changes, hoping that a comprehensive approach will finally resolve this long-standing issue.

Mercadona speeds up expansion in Portugal with new stores

Spanish retail giant Mercadona is accelerating its expansion in Portugal with plans to open 10 new supermarkets during the 2025 financial year, bringing the total number of stores in the country to 70. Currently, the Valencia-based chain has 60 stores and two logistics centres in Póvoa de Varzim and Almeirim. The expansion will begin in March in Santa Iria de Azóia, in the municipality of Loures, and will include two new stores in Lisbon. One will be in Alta de Lisboa, where it will be accompanied by a corporate office, complementing the company’s headquarters in Vila Nova de Gaia. The other store will be located in Quinta do Lambert, in Lumiar.

Mercadona currently operates in 12 districts of Portugal with a

workforce of 7,000 employees, including 1,700 new hires in 2024. To support its expansion, the company is actively recruiting for several positions. This commitment to expanding in Portugal underscores Mercadona’s strong dedication to the country and its residents.

In terms of job creation, Mercadona recently implemented an 8.5% salary increase for all its workers, effective as of January. The starting salary is now €14,963.90 gross per year, with the potential to increase up to €20,465.10 over a maximum of 4 years. Employees also enjoy additional benefits, such as daily food allowances, Sunday breaks, public holiday pay, and an annual bonus based on company and individual targets. This bonus is equivalent

to one extra salary after the first year of seniority, and two extra salaries after four years.

Woman jailed for collecting dead husband’s pension for years

A court in the Castilla-La Mancha region of Spain has handed down a twoyear prison sentence and a ne of €78,643.72 to a woman for concealing her husband’s death from the Social Security authorities, the bank, and his heirs in order to continue collecting his pension. She exploited her status as an authorized person to make cash withdrawals and card payments for six years after her partner’s death in Ecuador.

The sentence was initially issued by the provincial court of Guadalajara and has now been con rmed by the regional court of Castilla-La Mancha. The court also found BBVA to be vicariously liable for the incident, despite the bank’s request to be acquitted of all charges. Although the report did not explicitly state that the bank failed to check or verify the

bene ciary’s status, the judges accused BBVA of a “total lack of action” in the necessary processes. According to the court, the bank neither monitored the situation nor sought assistance from the provincial authorities when needed.

The court’s ruling highlighted that the continued use of the account by the defendant would not have been possible if BBVA had followed its legal obligations under article 17.5 OMTSS, which requires the bank to monitor pension payments. Despite this, the civil and criminal court clari ed that this article does not place the sole responsibility for verifying the continued existence of bene ciaries on the banking entities that handle the direct deposit of bene ts. Rather, it allows the paying entity to request

the provincial Social Security directorate to verify “all or some of the account holders receiving deposits” by providing proof of life.

Nevertheless, the court concluded that, even though almost six years had passed since the death of the account holder, the defendant was still able to use the account. This continued misuse was solely and exclusively attributable to BBVA for failing to notify Social Security annually, as required by law, regarding whether the account holder was still alive. This negligence continued until February 2021, when the bank nally informed the bene ts management entity that it would no longer be paying the pension due to the holder’s death.

RENFE plans to hire an additional 470 train drivers across Spain

Renfe, Spain’s stateowned train company, has unveiled a new public employment offer (OPE), opening 470 positions for entry-level train drivers to work across its nationwide passenger and freight services. The application window for these roles will remain open until Thursday, February 27. The positions will be subject to the working conditions and pay outlined in the collective agreement of the Renfe group, and applicants must meet the specific eligibility criteria detailed in the application notice, which can be found on Renfe’s official website.

The recruitment of these 470 new train drivers is part of Renfe’s ongoing effort to replace personnel who have retired or left the company. Renfe estimates that the company will have integrated approximately 2,500 new drivers over the past four years to address staff shortages. Additionally, Renfe has announced another OPE this week for its engineering and maintenance division. This will see 210 new positions filled by maintenance and manufacturing operators, contributing to the company’s broader workforce renewal.

supplies. Additionally, after the completion of the current academic year’s course, a further 20 positions will be available in the specialty of railway equipment maintenance, which is part of the dual vocational training modality.

This new hiring drive is part of Renfe’s 2025 public employment offer, which will cover a variety of roles within the public railway operator. Specifically, it will include 102 positions for fitter assemblers, 66 for electrical-electronics, 7 for machine tools, 7 for painting, 13 for boiler-making, sheetwelding, and 15 for

Renfe’s recent hiring efforts are notable, as last year the company held two large public job offers: one for 650 vacancies for commercial operators and workshop staff, and another for 600 vacancies for train drivers. In total, Renfe added approximately 1,350 new workers in 2024, including 71 positions filled by professional military personnel. With these latest hiring initiatives, Renfe will have brought over 8,000 new employees into its workforce since 2018.

Number of births increases for the first time in a decade in Spain

For the rst time in a decade, Spain saw an increase in the number of births in 2024, with a total of 322,034 births—an increase of 1,378 compared to the previous year, according to data from Spain’s INE national statistics institute.

This marks the second time in 16 years that the country has de ed the downward trend in birth rates, a trend that began in 2008 due to the impact of the global nancial crisis. The crisis led to increased family hardships and a decline in immigration, which at times even saw more people leaving Spain than arriving. The only other brief reversal of this trend occurred in 2014, when the number of births increased by nearly 2,000.

The modest recovery in births is closely linked to the signi cant in ux of immigrants over the past two and a half years, which has contributed to Spain’s

population growth. Since the end of 2022, more than one million new residents have been added to the national census, helping the country surpass 49 million inhabitants by last Christmas.

However, immigration remains the primary factor driving Spain’s population

growth. Despite the slight increase in births, the country’s natural population remains in decline. In 2024, Spain saw 439,146 deaths, about 3,000 more than the previous year, which led to a natural population decrease of 114,937 people, highlighting the ongoing demographic challenges faced by the nation.

Consumer group warns slimming product contains potentially harmful ingredient

Spain’s consumer organisation OCU has reported finding an active ingredient commonly associated with medicines in a slimming product sold across various online platforms. The ingredient, ephedrine, was discovered in the food supplement Fasterdetox, which the OCU has flagged to the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan).

Ephedrine is a natural alkaloid with stimulant properties affecting the central nervous system and the heart. It is used in medicines to aid breathing and raise blood pressure. While it is regulated and authorized for medical use, the OCU has raised concerns about its inclusion in a slimming product, which is not subject to the same safety scrutiny.

The organization warns that uncontrolled consumption of ephedrine can lead to harmful side effects, including nausea, vomiting, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, dizziness, tremors, muscle weakness, tachycardia, and palpitations. The OCU emphasized that as a food supplement, Fasterdetox should not contain such

an active ingredient.

The OCU has already informed Aesan about the presence of ephedrine in Fasterdetox, urging the agency to withdraw the product, which it describes as both illegal and dangerous.

Aldi recalls storage jars from shelves

Aldi has initiated a recall of all Crofton brand storage jars sold in its supermarkets due to concerns about the potential breakage of the glass container when the lid is closed. This recall includes two specific types of storage sets: one with a glass lid, identified by the EAN code 4068706031380, and the other with a wooden lid, identified by the EAN code 4068706031373. Both sets

contain three jars each.

The supermarket chain issued a statement informing customers that the glass in these containers could break or splinter when the lid is sealed, potentially contaminating the food stored inside and posing a risk of injury. As a result, Aldi has advised customers to stop using the affected storage jars immediately.

To ensure the safety of its customers, Aldi is offering full refunds for the recalled products. Customers who have purchased any of these Crofton storage jars are urged to return them to their nearest Aldi store for a refund. For further information or assistance, customers can contact Aldi’s customer service by calling 900 902 466 or by emailing contigo@aldi.es.

Pupils in Pilar wear gold ribbon to mark International Childhood Cancer day

The educational centers in Pilar de la Horadada participated in events to mark International Childhood Cancer Day, aiming to raise awareness about the challenges this disease presents for many families. A series of activities were organized, including the display of the golden ribbon, a symbolic representation of childhood cancer. Students wrote supportive messages on the ribbons for children, adolescents, and families affected by this difficult illness.

Nearly 2,000 students took part in the initiative, learning the importance of providing support, empathy, and affection to those battling the disease. The students emphasized that “their fight is everyone’s fight.” This event was made possible thanks to the involvement of local educational centers, which worked hard to instill values like empathy, resilience, and solidarity in the children.

The Department of Health praised such initiatives for shedding light on the reality faced by thousands of families, noting that childhood cancer results in more than 1,500 new diagnoses in Spain each year. Despite a five-year survival rate of 83.9% for children aged 0 to 14, the department stressed the ongoing need for

continued research, prevention through healthy lifestyle habits, and the importance of early diagnosis.

The golden ribbon, now a symbol of childhood cancer awareness, was first introduced in 1991 by a group of parents of children with cancer in the United States, who felt the need for a symbol to bring visibility to the challenges of the disease.

Rojales Local Police rescue two minors locked inside vehicles

Agents from the Rojales Local Police were called into action to break into two vehicles parked within the municipality after two minors were accidentally locked inside, and their parents were unable to open the cars.

The rst incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. on February 3, when a local resident reported that a minor was trapped inside a car and the parent could not access the vehicle. A police patrol responded to the scene, assessing the situation before deciding to break a window to rescue the child. The window was broken with minimal risk to

the child’s safety, choosing the window furthest from the minor to avoid any injuries from the glass.

The second case took place on February 10 around 1:30 p.m., when another local resident informed the police that a child was locked inside a car near the health center, and the parent had accidentally locked themselves out. Similar to the previous situation, the police broke a window to safely retrieve the child.

The Rojales Local Police have issued a reminder to the public, stressing that it is never advisable to leave a child unattended in a

vehicle. They warned that such situations could be considered cases of minor abandonment, and while these incidents had happy outcomes, there have been numerous reports of similar occurrences that ended tragically, including instances where children were either harmed or cars were stolen with the child inside. They emphasized that in an emergency, if the keys are inside, it is crucial to open or slightly lower a window, even if the engine is running, to prevent such incidents. However, the police also stressed the importance of always keeping a close eye on minors and never leaving them unattended.

understand what to expect during the procedure and to be aware of any potential risks involved.

I am 37 years old, and it is fair to say that I have always held my father in high esteem; possibly even idolised him. He always purported to be this successful business man, but lately I have been suspicious about his ‘wealth’. My mother always told me he was a spoofer and a ne’er-do-well; and that one day the scales would fall from my eyes. Six months ago, quite out of the blue, he asked to borrow several thousands of pounds from me. I was dumfounded but he told me he was having some cash-flow problems and that the money was owed to him, and he would pay me when his debtors paid him. I talked to my mother about it and she reminded me of her opinion of him, and advised me not to give her now ex-husband, a penny. She had fallen foul of him years since when she had an inheritance... she never got her money back; and that, along with other reasons, led to the divorce. Stupidly, I ignored my mother’s advice and now I am in debt, and my father is ignoring my calls and messages. I looked further into his situation and it turns out the ‘successful business man facade’ was just that. He is WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. If you’re looking for noninvasive alternatives to Botox and llers, treatments like microneedling, LED light therapy, HydraFacial, photo facials, and dermaplaning are excellent options. Here’s how each one works and why they’re gaining popularity:

1. Microneedling

Involves tiny needles that create micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production.

Helps with ne lines, acne scars, and overall skin texture.

Results in rmer, youngerlooking skin over time.

You love your father, that is clear. There is probably not much you can do here but lick your wounds. If your father is ignoring your requests to be repaid, it is unlikely you will ever be repaid. This may be something you’ll need to take on the chin; but make sure it doesn’t happen again. You idolised your father and respected him as a successful businessman when he was nothing of the sort; you tell me everything he owned was hiked up to the hilt, and whilst this made him appear to be doing well, you discovered hundreds of letters from debt-collectors going back years. When you visited his home recently there were Bailiffs there banging on the door. Speak with your bank or a financial adviser and see if you can find an easier and more affordable repayment deal to repay the loan monies. You may have to face the fact that you may not hear from your father any time soon. Seek solace with your mother; learn from this and try to put this behind you and move on.

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves using tiny needles, or microneedles, to create shallow, repetitive punctures in the skin. This treatment is commonly used to address various skin concerns such as scarring, stretch marks, and pigmentation issues.

The process works by causing slight damage to the skin, which triggers the body’s natural healing response. As a result, the body produces more collagen and elastin during this healing phase, improving the overall appearance of the skin.

While microneedling can be e ective for treating several skin conditions, it’s important to

Microneedling has gained popularity due to its numerous bene ts, including its minimally invasive nature and minimal downtime.

The primary bene t of microneedling is its ability to improve skin texture and appearance. It can help reduce the visibility of enlarged pores, dark spots, and stretch marks. In one study, participants underwent four microneedling treatments spaced 30 days apart. They experienced noticeable improvements in skin lines, wrinkles, elasticity, and texture, with results becoming evident 90 to 150 days after the rst session.

2. LED Light Therapy

Uses di erent wavelengths of light to target skin concerns. Red light stimulates collagen production and reduces wrinkles. Blue light kills acne-causing bacteria and reduces breakouts.

A painless, relaxing treatment with no downtime.

3. HydraFacial

A multi-step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and hydrates the skin. Uses a vortex suction tool to deeply cleanse pores while infusing serums.

4. Photo Facial (IPL – Intense Pulsed Light)

Targets pigmentation, sun damage, redness, and broken capillaries.

Uses light pulses to break down discoloration and promote even skin tone.

A great option for those with sun damage or rosacea. 5. Dermaplaning

A manual exfoliation technique that rem oves dead skin cells and peach fuzz.

Leaves skin ultra-smooth, glowing, and helps skincare products absorb better. Perfect for a refreshed, polished look without chemicals or downtime.

Why These Treatments Over Botox & Fillers?

Natural-Looking Results – They enhance your skin rather than

altering facial structure. Minimal to No Downtime – Most treatments allow you to resume daily activities immediately.

Safe for Long-Term Use –Unlike llers that can stretch the skin over time, these treatments promote natural collagen production.

DGT to install 122 more speed cameras on Spain’s roads this year

Spain’s Directorate-General for Tra c (DGT) is set to install a total of 122 new speed radars in the coming months, adding to the existing 2,010 cameras already on the country’s roads. Of the current radars, 780 are xed, 1,325 are mobile, and 92 are average speed section cameras. In January, 24 of the new radars were installed across several locations in Spain, including in the provinces of A Coruña, Asturias, Lugo, Orense, Pontevedra, Almería, Málaga, Granada, and parts of the Levante region such as Alicante and Valencia.

For example, a pedestrian has virtually no chance of surviving a collision with a vehicle traveling at 80 km/h or faster, while the survival rate rises to 95% when the speed is reduced to 30 km/h.

A study from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) indicates that reducing the average speed by just 1 km/h across all EU roads could prevent 2,200 deaths annually.

from nes has been a point of controversy. Current legislation mandates that all ne revenue be allocated to improving road safety, including infrastructure, road safety education, research, and victim support. However, there is a lack of clarity about where the funds actually go.

Alongside the increase in the number of speed cameras, the DGT has seen a signi cant rise in the collection of speeding nes, driven by several factors including more stringent speed controls, a higher number of vehicles, and an increased public awareness of the importance of adhering to speed limits. O cial data reveals that in 2015, the DGT collected €413,254,703 in tra c nes. The Covid-19 pandemic caused a temporary dip in tra c and nes, with only €45 million collected in 2020, but this trend reversed quickly after restrictions were lifted, with a record €507 million in nes collected in 2022.

The placement of speed cameras has drawn criticism from road user organizations and tra c experts. Legal experts from Pyramid Consulting argue that while radars in high-risk areas are necessary, many cameras are placed on stretches with unrealistic speed limits. This, they claim, results in automatic penalties and serves as a signi cant source of revenue for the DGT. Speeding nes alone make up 70% of the total ne revenue. The critics suggest that a large number of radars are set up on roads that are not particularly dangerous, often with low speed limits that generate nes without the loss of points. This has led some to believe that the primary goal of these speed cameras is nancial rather than focused on safety.

In defense, the DGT maintains that high speed remains a contributing factor in 21% of fatal accidents. According to 2023 data, 211 fatal accidents occurred in a 24-hour period due to speeding. The DGT points out that maintaining appropriate speed limits could prevent a quarter of all deaths in tra c accidents.

Regarding speed limit compliance, data from the European Baseline project shows varying levels of adherence depending on the type of road. On motorways, 63% of drivers comply with speed limits, while the gure drops to 51% on dual carriageways. On traditional roads, the compliance rate is just 43%, a level similar to that of Belgium. In urban areas, compliance is higher, with 65% of drivers adhering to the 50 km/h limit, and 32% respecting the 30 km/h limit. This lower average speed on streets with a 30 km/h limit signi cantly reduces the risk of fatal or serious accidents.

Speeding is the most common tra c violation, making up twothirds of all nes, followed by nes for expired vehicle inspections, improper mobile phone use, failure to wear a seatbelt, and driving with an expired or no license. Since the introduction of speed cameras in Spain 20 years ago, road fatalities have decreased by 75%, suggesting a link between the increase in speed cameras and the reduction in serious accidents.

The destination of the revenue

Patricia Navarro, president of the Partido Popular in Málaga, has called for the money collected from speed cameras in the province to be used for improving local road infrastructure, which she believes would reduce accidents. The Automovilistas Europeos Asociados (AEA) has also criticized the focus on speed cameras on motorways and dual carriageways, noting that 70% of fatal accidents occur on secondary roads. AEA’s president, Mario Arnaldo, believes the DGT should rethink its speed camera strategy, as it is not e ectively preventing accidents or speeding but is instead being used as a tool for revenue generation.

The increase in penalties has been another point of contention. While the DGT justi es these measures as a means to reduce accidents, experts from Pyramid Consulting question whether the real intention is safety or revenue, especially given the growing nes and the penalties associated with license points. This has led to an increase in the legal challenge of nes, particularly in cases where procedural errors are alleged, such as a lack of su cient evidence. Experts argue that this highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability from authorities to ensure the funds collected are used for their intended purposes.

Love was in the air (still close enough to Valentine’s Day, me thinks to use that analogy). A dewy start up at “The Hills” this morning for a slightly reduced field of 41 for the first game of our President’s Trophy, with people suffering the dreaded flu that seems to be so generous in passing itself around currently. The forecast was nice, but not as nice as the preceding days of 24c and it truly didn’t disappoint very quickly! You can’t complain about over 20c as it is February and many of the players’ native countries are still in the throes of very cold weather. Layering was so passé today…

The course didn’t disappoint, the greens were in great condition, as was the whole course, bearing in mind other courses’ greens and how over-used they currently are. There were some little “in four

ball comps” going on and handshakes were spied on various greens with matches clearly being won. Money certainly changed hands. Back at the beautiful setting of the clubhouse, sustenance was imbibed and late afternoon sunshine was enjoyed.

The yellow tees and pin positions were like chalk and cheese compared to the last time we played here in January (thankfully).

The scores today ended up as follows:

Gold: Barry Roehrig (aka BTB) (34 points)

Silver: Peter Spinks (33 points)

Bronze: Yvonne Davies (38 points) and a fabulous, best score of the day

Lots of “Twos” this week, which means nobody got rich and was divided between Alan Bryce, Steve Davies, Darren

Strugnell, Robin Eastman, Mike Stoff, Dave Rowe and Carmel McCann. Nearest the Pins were Barry Roehrig (5), Nigel Wilks (7), Darren Strugnell (10), Paul Kelsall (15) and Mike Stott (17). Dave Blackburn won the football card.

Vistabella for our third Eclectic meet next week which is already fully booked with a reserve list running. As a note, our membership is unfortunately closed but guests can register on the reserve list on our website (smgs.org).

The phantom photo-bomber reappeared this week – I need to brush up on my Photoshop skills – anyway – Left to Right: “Photobomb” Tony Smale, Lee Eastman (Captain), Barry Roehrig “aka BTB” (Gold), Yvonne Davies (Bronze), Norman McBride (Abacus with his wine!) and Peter Spinks (Gold).

LaLiga clubs choose representatives to reform Spanish football

In a signi cant move aimed at reforming and enhancing the Spanish football landscape, LaLiga clubs have recently voted to select their representatives for two key commissions within the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The chosen clubs will focus on important areas related to arbitration and competition regulations, underscoring LaLiga’s ongoing commitment to driving positive change within the sport.

During this week’s meeting of the Coordination Committee between LaLiga and RFEF, two clubs each from LaLiga EA Sports and LaLiga HyperMotion were elected to represent their interests in the Commission for Reforming the Arbitration System. The selected clubs are Sevilla CF and Real Betis from LaLiga EA Sports, and Granada CF and Albacete BP from LaLiga HyperMotion. The main goal of these representatives is to contribute to the transformation of the arbitration system in Spanish football, ensuring it aligns more closely with modern

standards and practices.

In addition to the arbitration representatives, the clubs also designated members for the Commission of Competitions, which oversees the rules governing league and cup competitions. Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal CF were selected from LaLiga EA Sports, while Racing de Ferrol and Málaga CF were chosen from LaLiga HyperMotion. This collaborative approach aims to improve competition governance, ensuring fair play and clear regulations for all participating teams.

The selection of these clubs represents a proactive step by LaLiga in involving its members in critical decision-making processes, paving the way for a more transparent and e cient administrative framework in Spanish football. As these representatives begin their roles, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the impact of their contributions on the future of the sport.
