Hello and welcome... to issue no 24 of Costa Life. With the beginning of the year now out of the way, Christmas, New Year and the Three Kings are now well behind us. The team and myself are settling back into the work place. Looking forward, can you believe to Valentines!! So for all you lovers out there, young and old, why not take the opportunity to use our advertisers and choose a special gift for that special someone, (hint hint Ronan) traditional or unusual; from cards to balloons, homemade chocolates or a romantic weekend away, you can pamper him or her the list is endless, so use your imagination… The feed back we have received on the last issue has been very positive, and it is nice to know that we are doing something right. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the writers and contributors for their articles and hard work over the last year, they make the magazines humorous and interesting, and of course as we have said before ¨the best magazines on the Coast and Inland Andalucia¨ but you know that! Also I have had quite a few comments on the editor´s picture saying it is definitely an improvement on the last one!! Sorry Ronan. But the reader is always right. We have added a new section to this months copy called “Costa Companies” where we take an in depth look at some of the new and old companies in Andalucia. We are quite confident when we make the claim that we give more editorial space to our clients than any other publication so give them a read. If you fancy using their services give them a call (make sure you say where you saw them). Starting a new business is hard anywhere but more so here so we pride ourselves in giving as much publicity to our advertisers as possible. Well that’s it for me; wow can you believe it will soon be Easter. Enjoy this issue, and have a great Valentines. See you in March

was flicking through the channels on Spanish TV the other day – a thing I occasionally do to relieve the tedium of listening to the Breaking News stories on Sky News for the umpteenth time in as many minutes – when I stumbled upon a Spanish programme that I thought I’d linger upon for a while to see how good my Spanish was coming along. It was a mistake. What I ended up watching was a really bad Spanish soap opera with really bad acting and really bad sound and probably, if I could understand a word of what was going on, a really bad storyline. This is why not having a particularly great conversational command of the Spanish language – or any kind of command of it, to be honest – can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. Ignorance is bliss, as they say. If you could understand what the two old Spanish women in the checkout line were talking about you would wish you couldn’t understand them… believe me. But anyway, watching this Spanish soap opera made me realise how polished the production of British soaps were, and probably still are, especially when you compare them to the ones over here. The thing is, when I lived in England I couldn’t stand the likes of Corrie and EastEnders and I always figured that the people that watched them must lead sad and pathetic lives if they found it entertaining to watch people on TV living in Manchester or London or Birmingham leading sad and pathetic lives. (Oh how my breast swelled with joy when Crossroads got axed.) And have you ever noticed that all these soap operas are set in places where most of the people in it have a funny accent, like Cockney or Brummie or Manky. This is because the producers of these things realise that people listening to other people’s broad local dialects feel better about themselves inside because they don’t have a silly accent. This is probably one of the reasons for the success of the Aussie soaps like Neighbours and Home and Away when they hit the British screens – they spoke with funny accents. But the Aussie soaps also had many other things that you don’t often find in
places like London or Birmingham or Manchester that apparently made them so attractive to the hoi polloi of the British public… like sunshine and sandy beaches and pretty girls in bikinis and people with a totally different and seemingly much better way of life. After seeing the success of this imported soap opera formula, the BBC – in their infinite wisdom – thought that they could go one better than the Aussies by taking the winning format of EastEnders and throwing it into some Aussie-soap-opera-type location with sunshine and sea and sand and… and?... and sexy señoritas! That’s it! We’ll take a bunch of cockneys and dump them in Spain. It’ll be a lot cheaper than taking them to Australia. And from that enlightened moment came forth Eldorado – EastEnders on the Costa del Sol. Do you remember it… that ill-fated British soap opera that ran for only one year, from July 1992-93, with Patricia Brake and Jesse Birdsall? Set in the fictitious Spanish resort of Los Barcos, it focused on the lives and loves of British expats and their attempts to make a new life for themselves in a new country. I’m sure that on paper it truly looked to the Beeb as though it possessed all the ingredients of a successful, entertaining soap opera (and if that’s not an oxymoron, then I don’t know what one is). But there was a minor flaw in the plan that Aunty Beeb hadn’t bargained on. A minor little flaw that, if undetected, would be a major reason for the premature and catastrophic collapse of what should have been the flagship of the BBC’s light entertainment department. Suffice to say, it went undetected. At this point I’d just like to point out that I do not do soap operas and hence never saw this soap flopera when it was originally screened. However, being a conscientious kind of guy, I obviously felt the need to do a bit of research on the subject to be able to put together an accurate and wellinformed article for you all to enjoy. Part of this research involved subjecting my tiny, fragile little mind to two whole hours of this so-called light

entertainment. Light entertainment!? Is that what they call it? Nah… this is heavy going, dude. Just as I was starting to work as a team with the people in my head, I go and stumble across Eldorado and all of a sudden I’m sliding down another snake in the Snakes and Ladders of life to find myself back at Step 1 of my 12-step programme again. This sort of stuff should carry a very prominent health warning from the Governor of the Department of Psychiatric Soundness. What on earth is it that could be so horrific in a person’s life that would lead them to feel so much better within themselves after watching an episode of Eldorado? Personally, it had me running to the bathroom cabinet in search of something to take away the pain. So it comes as no surprise to me that it only lasted for as long as it did. And, as I mentioned earlier, its demise was due to a small but significant flaw that was overlooked in the original plans. However, after my extensive research on the subject, I can confidently say that I have uncovered not just one, but several issues that together contributed to the downfall of said soap. So, pop-pickers, allow me to present to you the top five charttopping reasons that lead to Eldorado forever being banished to Room 101.
5. Far too big a build-up. “Are you ready for Eldorado,” read by actor Campbell Morrison, was the main strap-line in the pre-launch advertising trailers. Well, the simple answer was “No!” Everyone was so fired up with anticipation over the hype that, when it was finally aired, expectations were far, far beyond what was delivered.
4. Unbelievable storylines. The series opened with the controversial story of middle-aged man ‘Bunny’ returning from the UK with a 17-year-old bride ‘Fizz’. Everyone knows that story won’t wash… it certainly didn’t when I tried it on my mother. Implausible and seedy. If you want a proper story line, then just come over here, you fools, and look at life on the coast for yourselves. Yeah… believe me it’s a real life soap opera here. We’ve got lots of people
struggling to keep hold of their dreams. We’ve got waves of infidelity sweeping through the streets. We’ve got liars, thieves, cheats, muggers, drug dealers, con-men and ex-cons. We’ve got grapevines and gossip and smalltown talk. We’ve got fools with money and the seemingly helpful un-foolish trying to part them from it. Oh… yeah… and we’ve got sun, sea, sand and sexy señoritas.
3. Amateurish Acting. We’re talking acting that would make Bill and Ben look like Emmy award winners (although they were terracotta pots, not quite so wooden). Sure, there were a few reasonably well-established actors and actresses like Patricia Brake and Jesse Birdsall, and reasonably decent up-and-coming ones like Julie Fernandez, who, incidentally, was the first character in a soap opera to be played by a real-life wheelchair-bound actress, and who also later appeared in Ricky Gervais’s The Office. But the rest of the cast were a bunch of inexperienced actors whose limitations were clearly exposed. Before filming, some of them didn’t even know what a read-through was.
2. Totally un-sound sound. So bad, in fact, that the mocking phrase ‘Eldorado-Sound’ became a term that is still used today around the BBC to describe an out-of-place, echoing sound in a recording. It was actually the result of filming in barewalled villas with marble floors and concrete ceilings, rather than in a studio. Come on, don’t you people know why we sing in the shower? But there were also the familiar authentic Spanish sounds like sirens and aeroplanes and car horns, that are just a part of the everyday background soundscape here… but they really stand out when you’re sitting quietly at home in England watching soap operas on TV. And now, pop-pickers, are you ready for the number one reason why Eldorado failed? The one flaw in the original plans that got overlooked… the one thing that nobody thought about or took into account when putting together such a new and ambitious
project... a project that relied on endless strict and tight deadlines…. a project based in Spain that required the number one reason for its failure….
1. Spanish workers. Ahh… the producers weren’t ready for that one, were they? Oh, you foolish brave. Do your homework next time, girls. Spanish workers meeting deadlines? Endlessly? Now there’s two non-runners to start with. There’s more chance of finding an English bar in town that’s NOT for sale! And then there’s the ‘quality’ issue with Spanish workers – again, a non-starter. This was a project that was clearly destined for failure well before the Spanish workers had got their asses off the ground. And now, as the dust settles, Eldorado is just remembered as an embarrassing failure for the BBC, and is even used as a byword for any unsuccessful, poorly-received or overhyped television programme. Far from being The Golden One, as Eldorado translates from Spanish, it’s more like the South American El Dorado, the mythical lost city of gold, except it is just lost, and hopefully lost forever. But there is still something to be learned from this whole tragic saga. If, like me, you didn’t even know that the programme existed, then walk on, my friend, and find your dream. If, on the other hand, you have found that by reading this it has reminded you of how much you used to enjoy watching the thing, and how much you wished it was still running, because it really was just getting better wasn’t it?, then let me ask you this. What are you doing sitting watching other people’s fictitious problems on TV when there’s a whole real world out there, with real problems and real issues? Maybe you’ll end up like Eldorado Dingbatti, the character from the “Coping With…” series of books, and you’ll confuse yourself with the ill-fated TV show and your worst nightmare will be that, just like the real Eldorado, no-one will pay you any attention and eventually you’ll be killed off. But then, on the plus side, we would only have to put up with you three times a week… and then just for half an hour!

I
have been fortunate enough in the past to have wined, dined and stayed in some of the most salubrious establishments around the world; for instance the Mansion at Turtle Creek in Dallas, the Ritz in Paris, the Plaza in New York, Raffles in Singapore, the Peninsular in Hong Kong and, in the UK, the Savoy and Claridges. These are just a few of the many places that I look back on with the fondness of time. Now one other comes to mind – the splendid Ritz Hotel in Madrid. In fact the whole experience of visiting Madrid left me with a wonderful feeling of excitement and discovery.
Madrilènes as the locals are called (also known as a tomato and onion flavoured soup served cold that we know as Gazpacho) describe their city as such: “She may not be beautiful, but she sure is a looker!” Historically Madrid became the capital by accident. In its early days it resembled an old Mexican western style border town, a swirling dust bowl with a small collection of adobe style houses situated near the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsular that the Spaniards call the heart of Spain. Madrid became the capital in 1561 after King Felipe IV remodelled the city. Over the centuries, Madrid exploded from a dusty collection of rickety shacks into a massive modern city that is spread over 234 sq miles. It can now boast wonderful historical landmarks, museums, broad boulevards and umpteen outdoor cafés; a 24-hour lifestyle city with major plazas and monuments that mark the old inner city centre which is an easily walkable 1.5 square miles.
Madrilènes have a very apt nickname – Gatos – as most are nocturnal, with the workday not beginning until 10am. The locals quite often will not have dinner until midnight and this often leads to traffic jams at 3am or even later. The region that Madrid occupies is divided by two mountain ranges, the Sierra de Guadarrama and the Sierra de Gredos mountains, spread over a series of rolling hills on the edge of the area known as New Castile which is situated at about 2,100 feet above sea level. Until 1960 the small Manzanares River marked the western and southern boundaries of Madrid. However since the increase in the populace has risen to around 4 million, these boundaries have spread across the river onto the area that was once green belt, and now the river is bordered by high-speed roads, providing motorist access to the city centre. Madrid’s development started five years after it became the capital. Around 1656, King Felipe IV had a wall built around the city, giving it a look of importance. Over the next 200 years it grew, with the construction of taller buildings on the open land within the walls. The first major expansion outside the walls was to the east. This area, known as the Barrio de Salamanca, is considered to this day as an exclusive neighbourhood for the rich and famous set of Madrid.

>> costaGETAWAYS Look for the Velázquez (1599-1660) collection on the first floor in rooms 12, 14, 15,15a, 16 and 27; more than 50 works from when he was the official court painter to Felipe IV. His masterpiece of realism (originally called La Familia de Felipe) portrays the King and Queen being painted by Velázquez, with Velázquez himself on the left and the infanta Margarita in the centre. World renowned art experts all agree that this painting, now renamed as Las Meninas (Maids of Honour 1656), is a mastery of light, colour, space and depth. Other works to look for are Las Hilanderas (The Spinners 1650), La Infanta Dona Margarita de Austria, the Cristo Crucificado that conveys the agony of the Crucifixion and La Rendición de Breda (The Surrender of Breda) – all are classics.
The Ritz My exploration of Madrid started from the magnificent 5 star hotel The Ritz. It is quite rightly regarded as being one of the leading hotels in the world, with 137 rooms and 30 suites, each furnished in the true belle époque style. The elegant Goya restaurant offers a splendid cuisine with a surprisingly wide selection of Spanish and Mediterranean specialities. To take tea shoulder to shoulder with the cream of Madrid’s fragrant society and film stars in the spring or summer, in the wonderful equally fragrant terraced gardens, snacking on a variety of elegant sandwiches and mouth-watering pastries is not cheap, as one could imagine, but this once in a life time experience is worth every euro. The Ritz is slap bang in the city centre, situated 15 kilometres from Barajas airport and across the road from the world famous Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. With your jacket casually slung over one shoulder, a short stroll takes you to the Retiro Park and botanical gardens. If New York, Paris, Rome and London can boast of their art collections, well Madrid can shout it from the rooftops. The Museo del Prado is a complex of three buildings on the eastern side of the Paseo del Prado. It has arguably one of the best collections of European art in the world, as well as having a magnificent collection from the Spanish school that includes artists such as El Greco, Diego Rodriguez de Silva Velázquez and Francisco de Goya. Through the eyes of these incredible painters you are transported back hundreds of years to see the people and Spanish life as it was then, captured by the masters of brush strokes, as these were the ‘photographers’ of their time.
The Museo Del Prado

The whole second floor wing is devoted to Francisco José Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), an enormous collection that ranges from religious paintings to passionate portraits such as the intriguing oils of the La Maja Vestida (The Dressed Beauty) and La Maja Desnuda (The Nude Beauty) said to be of unknown women, but it is believed that the woman in both paintings is the Duquesa de Alba, possibly Goya’s lover. Then there are the scary images of war that Goya, like a war photographer, brought to the canvas of the extremes of hope and misery Spain experienced before, during and after the Napoleonic invasion. El Dos de Mayo, and even more dramatically El Tres de Mayo, give an insight into the revolt and executions of insurgents in Madrid (1808). These are on the first floor. Then in rooms 60a, 61a, and 62a are the rooms for El Greco (the Greek) (1541-1614). This Cretan born artist (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) lived and painted in Toledo, mainly for the church. Amongst his many religious paintings, and possibly his best, is the portrait of El Caballero de la Mano en el Pecho (Gentleman with his hand on his breast). Opposite the Prado is another feast of art, the Museo ThyssenBornemisza. Formerly the private collection of a Hungarian-German

Las Meninas family of magnates, it was bought by Spain in 1993 for US$ 300 million and these almost 800 works of art have hung in the gallery since 1992. It is believed that it is the most comprehensive collection of historic art, from the masters such as Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Cézanne, Monet, Van Gogh, Miró, Picasso, Gris, Pollock, Dali, and, finally and breathlessly, Lichtenstein. If none of these please your taste, well it is back to painting by numbers. If after several days of casting your eyes over the Masters fresh air could be next on your list, retire to the Parque Del Buen Retiro. Here Madrid can offer you a traditional Sunday stroll through splendid open spaces which were once exclusively for the Royal family and their entourages.
Parque Del Buen Retiro
Plasa Mayor During the summer it is open until midnight. Here you’ll find a kaleidoscope of street performers singing and playing virtually every instrument you could think of with professional dexterity. I would like a euro for every ice cream that is consumed by the strollers. Catch one of the puppet shows in Tiritilandia (puppet land) or just sit by the lake and enjoy the whole ambience of the Madrilènes enjoying their leisure. No city, town or village in Spain would be worth its salt without a Plaza Mayor and you could bet that Madrid’s is one of some distinction. It was originally designed by Juan Gomez de Mora for Felipe III whose statue still adorns the centre. In the 17th century, the Plaza was used for executions, bullfights and a market. It had to be rebuilt several times over the years after being destroyed by three separate fires and its final renovation came in the early 1990s. Now it is arcaded with the Casa de la Panaderia and endowed with colourful facades.

Plaza de Oriente finished in 1850, in its time it has been burned down and blown up in the civil war – how’s that for theatrical licence.
Palacio Real As Madrid has been home to many generations of Royal Families, you could expect that the Palacio Real would be unique. Described as a jewel box of a palace, it is adorned with priceless paintings, tapestries, frescoes, and statues, though now only used for royal ceremonies. (The present royals live in Palacio de la Zarzuela which is slightly more modest.) When the old Alcazar burned down on Christmas Day in 1734, Felipe V immediately went to work on the plans for a new palace that would outstrip other European royal homes. If built as originally planned it would have been grotesquely vast but now with 2,800 rooms it is less than a quarter of the size Felipe wanted. Take the official tour that walks you through 50 rooms from the splendid to the sublime, with Goyas by the truckload, hundreds of ornate clocks, and more Stradivarius violins than you can imagine. The main stairway is an over-the-top statement of grandeur. However if you want mouth-watering opulence then maybe the Salon del Trono (the throne room) will suffice. Its sumptuous walls are covered in velvet crimson, and it also has an exquisite Tiepolo ceiling. Then, just as you’ve thought you have had your fill of opulence, next is the Salon de Gasparini that may have imported all the silks from China to decorate the walls. Outside the main palace on the southern end of the Plaza de Armas is the Farmacia Real, a pharmaceutical wonderland of medieval medical jars, lotions and potions. Then try Armeria Real: as you would guess this is the royal armoury; a shiny collection of 16th and 17th weapons and armour, including a full suit of armour that was worn by Felipe III. Plaza de Oriente is the Palace’s front garden – a riot of colour with manicured lawns lined with statues of monarchs. These were intended for the roof of the Palace, but Carlos III deemed that they would be too heavy. Also you can visit the Campo del Moro which is where the Muslim army camped in the 12th century before their attack on the Alcazar, and the more formal Jardines de Sabatini. On the eastern side of the square is the Opera house, now splendid after a 100 million euro renovation in the late 1990s. Built in 1818 and

Skin Care... More men than ever are interested in taking better care of their skin & a simple daily ritual of cleansing & moisturising will keep skin & hair looking healthy. Some of today’s men are increasingly aware and concerned about the health and appearance of their skin, although for many men skin care is a mere after thought .Beyond the world of shaving their faces, it is rare for a man to devote time to his skin, especially the skin on his face. Skin is the body’s first line of defense against sickness, germs and disease, so men should practice a skin-care routine twice a day, just as many women do.
A man’s skin is approximately 20% thicker than a woman’s, and is typically firmer because it’s richer in collagen and elastin. However, because of more active sebaceous glands, men’s skin tends to be much oilier. It is also more prone to dehydration because of daily or regular shaving basically, this means you get dirtier. It is very important; no matter what skin type you have, to clean your face every day. Deep cleansing is important. It keeps pores clear, skin healthy and you looking good, and only takes a few minutes a day
Words of wisdom... Learn to live every moment in your life as though it were your last: leave work earlier, experience new adventures and laugh all day long
It’s painful, it looks unsightly and can scar.
Ingrown hairs... Quotes... Try not to become a man of success but rather to become a man of value. Albert Einstein We mustn’t let our passions destroy our dreams. Anonymous
Exfoliate regularly. Using a facial scrub, which will help remove dead skin cells and encourage hairs to grow without obstructions Shave properly. Bad shaving technique is one of the main causes of ingrown hairs .The biggest mistake is not following the direction of the hair growth, particularly on the neck area.If you get an ingrown hair, never shave it off. You’ll make things worse and cause scarring, instead use sterilised tweezers to lift the hair out. If its grown into the follicle, cut it at skin level and allow to heal. It’s going to be decisive. - (Newsweek, Sep 24, 2001) You can fool some of the people all the time, and those are the ones you want to concentrate on. Look After Your Skin this Spring… There are four essential steps to healthy Skin Care: Cleansing, Exfoliation, Moisturizing, Protection (against the sun and elements). This is the time of year we start to think about Detoxing our inner selves. No doubt your skin is also feeling tight and a bit neglected. All your skin needs is some nutrition. Remember when cleansing your skin not to use products that include soap, this strips the skin of its natural moisture. Use a cleansing milk or wash-off cleanser that suits you, this should leave your skin feeling clean, fresh and uplifted. If you use a wash off cleanser, splash your face with cool water not warm. Exfoliating is an all important step; this removes any dead skin cells. It is not necessary to over exfoliate, a good product should only need to be used once or twice a week for normal to dry skins and once a week to every 10 days for sensitive, oily or combination skins. Your choice of moisturizer, where possible, can include a protection from UVA and UVB rays. Whichever moisturizer you choose, this time of year always use one that is of a richer consistency than you would normally use to give your skin the extra nutrition that it needs. If your moisturizer does not include sun protection, use something that does over the top of your day cream. Wherever you are it is important to protect your skin not just from the sun, but from other elements such as the wind and heating.
Ageless beauty comes from within… A good person with a calm, peaceful inner world generates true beauty, regardless of age. So often, simple-looking, down-to-earth people impress us in the first very instance. They are the ones who carry an inner, positive influence as a beautiful mark on their faces.
TOP TIP… When choosing the best eye concealer, use the product that is thin not thick and then build it on in layers, patting each layer until you cover the flaws. A blue based concealer has better under eye coverage, it will reflect light and make the eyes look brighter. For dark circles use a yellow or orange based concealer as this will neutralize the dark area.
Beauty tip… Cleanse your face way before you go to bed, research shows skin repairs itself best around 10 p.m. So let skin breathe long before you start snoozing.

LET’S BURN CALORIES & GET ACTIVE
A
n average person will burn around 30% of their calories through daily activity, sedentary people will only use around 15%. Think of these statistics – and keep active! Keep thinking “keep moving”.
- Swing your legs - Stand up & stretch - Move your head from side to side - Pace up and down - Use the stairs - Park in the furthest corner of the car park - Stand up when you are on the phone Weight loss will be quicker and easier by increasing metabolic rate – this will burn more calories. Metabolic rate is the rate the body burns calories. If you eat 2,500 calories worth of food per day and burn up 2,500 calories, you will stay the same weight. Do you get the idea? So while “keeping moving” will burn calories, speeding things up a bit will give better results.
Stay fit & burn calories Speed up – When you walk anywhere, to the shops, around the shops, to the school, around the golf course, try to walk a bit faster. If you feel your heart beating faster and you are slightly out of breath, then you are doing it properly. Tighten your bum and swing your arms to get a better workout. Big steps – Take stairs whenever you can. Two at a time will help your heart and lungs work a bit harder, improve your fitness and burn calories. Go the extra distance – Take a longer route to get to your destination. All the extra distance over a week will add up. Goal setting – Plan your activity. If you want to walk ten miles in a week, for example, break this down into daily mileage, making it seem more achievable.
Bottom squeeze. Tone up your bottom by contracting the muscles around your bottom 10 – 20 times a day. Downward foot press. Press your feet down hard against the floor, and then raise your heels and toes. This will improve circulation. Repeat 15 – 25 times regularly. Leg tucks. Sitting with feet firmly on floor, keep feet there, contract the back of your thighs as though you are trying to pull feet towards you. Then contract tops of your thighs as though you are trying to pull feet towards you. A great thigh workout!
Stay motivated! If you are tired remember exercise will give you energy. You will feel better once it is done! If you are stressed, exercise should help you to relax and destress.

Minimum 5 minutes warm up and a gradual cool down of at least four minutes. Keep breathing regular. If you have high blood pressure, don’t lift heavy weights and don’t do any stretching exercises that involve pushing against a stationary object. No pain no gain is a myth. If it hurts, stop! Take it easy if you are ill .Do not train. Give your body a chance to recover.
Quick ways to keep your body toned and trim Thigh squeeze. Sit with feet slightly apart and squeeze your thighs together and release. Repeat 20 – 30 times at least once a day.
Do not train when using prescription drugs or have been drinking alcohol.

T
he elixir of life that can turn back the clock and prevent ageing has been sought since time began. Scientists now realise the food we eat may hold the answer. So move over expensive wrinkle creams anti ageing foods are here.
The general guidelines for the anti-aging diet are: keep your calorie consumption and saturated fat intake down; eat plenty of wholegrains, oily fish and fresh fruit and vegetables; and cut down on salt and sugar. In addition to these general guidelines, there are specific foods that have a role in anti-aging and that you should regularly include in your diet.
Avocado…
this fruit, which is usually eaten as a vegetable, is a good source of healthy monounsaturated fat that may help to reduce levels of a bad type of cholesterol in the body. Avocado is a good source of vitamin E and can help to maintain healthy skin and prevent skin aging (vitamin E may also help alleviate menopausal hot flushes). It is rich in potassium which helps prevent fluid retention and high blood pressure.
Berries… such as blackberries, blueberries, blackcurrants and black grapes contain phytochemicals known as flavonoids – powerful antioxidants which help to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals and aging.
Cruciferous vegetables… these are cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, turnip, brussels sprouts, radish and watercress. Cruciferous vegetables assist the body in its fight against toxins and cancer. You should try to consume at least one or a combination of these vegetables on a daily basis. If possible, eat them raw or very lightly cooked so that the important enzymes remain intact.
Garlic…
eating a clove of garlic a day (raw or cooked) helps to protect the body against cancer and heart disease.
Ginger… this spicy root can boost the digestive and circulatory systems, which can be useful for older people. Ginger may also help to alleviate rheumatic aches and pains.
Nuts… most varieties of nuts are good sources of minerals, particularly walnuts and brazil nuts. Walnuts, although high in calories, are rich in potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium. Nuts may also help control cholesterol levels.
Soya… menopausal women might find that soya helps to maintain oestrogen levels. Soya may alleviate menopausal hot flushes and protect against Alzheimer’s disease, osteoporosis and heart disease.
Vitamins and your skin… You’ve probably noticed vitamins in facial creams and as skinfriendly supplements. So which ones should you wear and which ones should you swallow?
Vitamin A
Mariah Carey´s
Purple Pledge The pop diva is convinced that mauvecoloured foods like red grapes, plums and beetroot – known for their anti-ageing benefits – will stop her developing wrinkles. The songstress, who dev ised the die t with her nutritionist, now munches purple meals three days a week. Purple food can prevent breakdown of collagen and slow the wasting of muscles. There’s a saying that ‘a plum a day keeps a facelift away.’
Orally… Most people get enough in their diets to make supplements unnecessary. Topically… It’s been shown to clear up acne and reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores. Wear it… Vitamin A is most effective in prescription form. A less potent option, retinol, is available in over the counter creams (RoC Retinol Actif Pur line).
Vitamin B Orally… Unless you suffer from a deficiency, supplements won’t noticeably improve your skin. Topically… Research shows that panthenol (B5) and niacinamide (B3) added to skin care products help hydrate skin and even out tone. Wear it… You can find it in the Olay Total Effects line.
Vitamin C Orally… Taking vitamin C counteracts the effects of sun exposure by reducing free-radical damage, which can lead to wrinkles and cancer. Topically… It can decrease sun damage and enhance collagen production if it’s in an effective, stable form; look for ‘Lascorbic acid,’ ‘ascorbic palmitate’ or ‘magnesium ascorbyl phosphate’ on labels. Take it and wear it… Pop 500 to 2,000 mg a day and use a C cream.
Wholemeal pasta and rice…
complex carbohydrates provide a consistent supply of energy throughout the day and should make up the bulk of your diet. Wholemeal pasta is an excellent complex carbohydrate. It is high in fibre and contains twice the amount of iron as normal pasta. Brown rice is another recommended complex carbohydrate, which is high in fibre and B vitamins.
Watermelon… both the flesh and seeds of the watermelon are nutritious so try blending them together in a food processor and drinking as a juice. The flesh contain vitamin A, B and C; the seeds contain selenium, essential fats, zinc and vitamin E, all of which help against free radical damage and aging.
Vitamin E Orally… Taking 400 IU of vitamin E daily can reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture. Look for ‘natural’ or ‘d-alpha tocopherol’ on labels. Topically… Preliminary studies suggest that E reduces chronic UV-induced skin damage. Take it now, wear it later… Pills are the way to go, but E creams are showing promise.
Water… drink at least eight glasses of water every day in order to remain healthy. Water helps us to get rid of the toxins and unwanted waste materials from your body. Don’t rely on thirst; this sensation diminishes with age.
Other anti ageing foods: Nuts, including almonds, seeds Fruit and green leafy vegetables especially sprouts Lentils Organic cottage cheese and yogurt Goji juice possibly the best anti-aging substance in the world Seaweed Aloe vera Antioxidants (eg vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10) Olive oil Foods with omega 3 fatty acids (eg flaxseed oil) Foods with omega 4 & 5 fatty acids (eg evening primrose and fish oil).
So do Purple Foods work? Purple foods like grapes, different berries, some sorts of figs etc, contain so many natural anti-oxidants, which are mainly in the form of beta carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and are all fighting the free radicals in the body, so they are called antiagent substances. Purple food also contains very important substances called bioflavonoids, which are also a powerful source in anti-age programmes and also work as an antiinflammatory. By the way, all of those products are with little calories, a great plus. Enjoy your purple diet.

Obese women told to get fit not fight fat… Women should stop dieting and focus on becoming healthier instead, they said it is possible to be fat and fit and that restrictive diets do not work. After 12 weeks of exercise and guidance on eating patterns, a group of morbidly obese women were healthier even though they had not lost weight. Their blood pressure and cholesterol levels improved as did their psychological well-being.
Get in touch with your inner fat… It is commonly assumed that people who are slim must be much healthier than those who are obviously overweight. It used to be said that inside every fat person was a thin person trying to get out. Now it seems it could be other way around.
Mix Up Your Fiber Fix… Man shall not live by whole-wheat bread alone. To get the full range of heart benefits from fiber, think outside the bread box once in a while. Whole grains are great, but dip into fiber-rich fruits and veggies, as well as nuts and seeds. Fiber from different sources protects your heart in different ways.
Scientists have discovered that many outwardly slim people are storing up dangerous layers of fat inside their bodies. And while they may look thin on the outside their health is often far more at risk than those people who are obviously fat or obese.

The Trigger Finger T ‘When a finger gets stuck’
rigger finger is the common name for a problem that physicians call tendonitis stenosans = tendon inflammation causing impingement. A frequent problem of this ‘little’ disease is that the physician often overlooks it or even misinterpreted for a different kind of problem.
To understand the meaning of the term ‘trigger finger’, we have to talk about anatomy first. Every finger has two flexor tendons on the side of the palm, both of them gliding on top of each other, and they run through a tunnel at the level of the wrist (the carpal tunnel, together with a nerve and another tendon of the thumb), before becoming the muscle at the forearm, which bends the finger. To control the gliding direction during motion of the finger, both flexor tendons for each finger are passing through several small ring bands, which are located across the palm side of every finger and hold the tendons down to prevent bow-stringing. For several reasons, like local tendon disease, tendon injury, systemic diseases or even after hand operations, it can happen that the flexor tendons of one or more finger get stuck in one of these ring bands. If this happens, it most frequently occurs in the ring band, which is located close to the base joint of the finger, at the level of the knuckles (see diagram). The first symptoms are usually a sensation of stiffness in the affected finger, followed by pain on any motion and occasionally ‘pins and needles’ in the fingertip. If untreated, the problem will deteriorate until the finger gets stuck in a bent position and it will need the help of the other hand to extend it. This is often first noticed in the morning after waking up, and it is very painful.
Complicating matters, the pain is frequently felt in the back of the finger or in its middle joint instead of the base joint. For this reason the trigger finger can be misdiagnosed as arthritis in the middle joint of the affected finger, especially in people over 60, who in general suffer from joint degeneration. But on palpation at the level of the base joint on the palm side of the finger, one can feel a little nodule, moving forward and backward during motion of the finger. If already in the deteriorated stage, even little pressure in this area causes significant pain. The treatment is straightforward. In the stage of stiffness and some pain on movement, a local infiltration of cortisone, under local anaesthetic, can cause a decrease in the swelling of the tendon and leave it with more space in the track of ring bands to allow free and painless movement of the finger. These injections can be repeated a few times, but the recurrence rate of the problem is up to 50%. If this does not work, or if the stage of the ‘stuck finger’ has already been reached, a small operation would be the solution. This operation is performed under a local anaesthetic, as an out-patient in the practice, and takes about 10 minutes (if done by an experienced surgeon). During the procedure, after performing a small (1/3 inch) transverse skin incision, the ring band will be opened, the free passage of the flexor tendons will be ensured by moving the finger and the skin will be closed with a couple of stitches. The patient should start to mobilise the finger immediately after the operation, the stitches are removed after 10 days and the time off work should not be longer than two weeks. The recurrence rate after this procedure is between 1 – 5%. Should you have any further questions to this or any other hand problem, do not hesitate to ring us at Clínica Sandalf at 952 57 77 66.

New Tax Legislation Personal Income and Savings Tax Brought to you buy The Torresol Group
T
he 28th November 2006 saw the long awaited publication of the latest Spanish tax legislation which came into force on 1st January 2007. I say “long awaited” because once outline proposals were published by the Hacienda way back in the summer, many column inches and minutes of airtime were dedicated to this theme in the Spanish media due to radical nature of some of the reforms. Several months of frustration followed as we speculated whether all or only some of the proposals would pass successfully through the Courts.
The text of the law - Law 35/2006 of 28th of November concerning the Income of Physical Persons and the partial modification of the laws regarding Taxes of Companies, NonResidents and Wealth Tax – runs to 76 pages. After ploughing through this tomb, with the view of seeking clarification on a couple of sections, I paid a visit to Málaga and consulted with Landwell (Price Waterhouse Coopers Spain) who provided me with their own commentary in Spanish and an extremely shortened version in English. More study and cross-referencing – at least my job leaves me no opportunity for boredom and I guess I ought to be thankful that for the rest of 2007 there is no danger of suffering from writers block! I have commented many times that the Spanish fiscal system is completely different to the UK and that local advice from an established company is far preferable than attempting to try and work out a tax liability on your own. A professional who can speak both Spanish and English can not only offer an analysis in your own language but is also capable of conducting their own research without relying on third parties (apart from seeking a second opinion which is sometimes useful). Spanish tax liability depends on how individual cases are reported and it is very important that your advisor understands how all the nuts and bolts of your financial circumstances fit into the Spanish system. Please note that any technical observations published are for general orientation purposes only and should never be used as a substitute for professional advice that takes into consideration personal financial circumstances. Revised Personal Tax Structure: The most revolutionary change to previous legislation concerns the creation of a new structure for

the taxation of income which operates though two concepts – the general base and the savings base. The general base is taxed on a sliding scale whereas the savings base is subject to a fixed flat rate of 18%. Using a very simple example, employment income would count towards the general base whereas interest gained in a bank account would be taxed at a flat rate of 18%. So far, so good – but then we have to consider the precise definitions as to what is regarded as savings income and what is looked upon as general income. This is a complex area, particularly when there are non-Spanish accounts/products involved so I would encourage you to seek individual professional assessment. However, just to give you a very rough idea: Savings: 18% pa Investment income and Capital Gains and Losses Individual stocks and shares and/or collective investments. This includes ISAs/PEPs but not necessarily schemes taken out with life companies.. Whether such products are included in the annual savings base or general savings base depends on policy conditions and finer points of Spanish fiscal law. Interest bearing bank accounts
General: Progressive tax scale 24% to 43% Employment Income Pensions Lifetime income plans – the nearest UK equivalent is an annuity These have special treatment depending on the age of the individual on commencing income drawdown. UK private pensions held with life assurance companies would fall into this category. Asset Holding Companies: In essence, these are companies that were set up merely to hold property or other assets (perhaps in an effort to avoid inheritance tax) and not used for business purposes. The new regulations rule that Asset Holding Companies will now come under the general corporation tax rules and not a special regime similar to personal income tax as was the case previously making them less tax efficient. A transitional period exists whereby such companies can be dissolved free from transfer tax and stamp duty on corporate operations. In addition, a company that is dissolved will not pay corporation tax on assets or rights allocated to shareholders resident in Spain. The decision to dissolve a company must be taken in the first 6 months of 2007 and completed within 6 months. Further information will be published next month. In the meantime, you might like to browse the Downloads section of our web site or call the office for a general chat.
Exemptions: Dividends received up to a maximum €1.500 pa Rule is not applicable to profits or dividends paid out by collective investment institutions. Gain generated by savings schemes held with life companies during the capitalisation stage prior to taking an income. Please note that certain restrictions apply

ithin the beautiful southern Spanish region of Andalucía, to the east of the city of Málaga, lies an area known locally as La Axarquía. It has remained mainly unexplored by tourists until the last ten years or so, when some northern European expatriates, wanting to “get away from it all”, discovered the beautiful hilly region that included the village of Cómpeta. They started buying up some of the run-down fincas and farmhouses in the area, and put it on the map. Today, rural tourism comprises a large part of the local economy. However, the area is still breathtakingly beautiful and has not been spoilt by the interest and influx of foreigners. The main attractions are the area’s dramatic hill and mountain scenery, its unspoilt whitewashed villages and the predominance of fruit trees, which include tropical fruits such as mango and kiwi. Axarquía is excellent for hiking and several companies now run walking holidays from the UK, centred on Cómpeta. Horse trekking is similarly popular here. Deep valleys lined with terraces and irrigation channels that date back to Muslim times cross the landscape. Nearly all the villages that dot the olive, almond, avocado and vineplanted hillsides are of Muslim origin, with narrow winding streets. Following the 1569 Morisco rebellion, the inhabitants of Axarquía were replaced with Christians from further north. The so-called capital of the area is Vélez-Málaga, which boasts a hilltop Muslim castle, and the coastal towns of Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar and Nerja are within easy reach. The small Spanish town of Rincon de la Victoria, in the southwesternmost point of La Axarquia is also the starting point of the Route of Sun and Avocados.

rquía Rincon de la Victoria is 12 km from Malaga and 20km from Velez-Malaga. Its population has soared recently due to the increasing numbers of Spanish people from Malaga who have chosen it as their residence. Its importance as a tourist resort leads to its population rising to some 40,000 in the summer months, with many other Europeans also choosing to settle in the area. The main attractions of the town are it’s almost ten km of peaceful, sandy beaches. Hotels, residential areas and leisure amenities are all provided to give the visitor maximum comfort and enjoyment during a stay here. Inland, in the valleys of the Totalan, Granadillas and Benagalbon rivers, the cultivation of sub-tropical fruits abounds. Besides the town of Rincon de la Victoria, the municipal area also includes La Cala del Moral and Benagalbon.
The entire coastline of Malaga is dotted with watchtowers built for defence against the attacks of pirates from the North of Africa. These towers are known as almenaras (beacons) and were either built by the Moors of the Kingdom of Granada, continuing to be used after the Christian reconquest, or were ordered to be built by the monarchs of Castile. Some have fallen into ruin, though others, better preserved, remind us of how messages were sent by means of lighting fires to warn of possible attack. The most important festivities of Rincon de la Victoria are in honour of the Virgin of Carmen, which take place on 16th July. These celebrations include a procession by sea, carrying the statue of the Virgin on the typical vessels of the area, and exciting boat races also take place at this time. This, and all the other fiestas which seem to be so vital in Spain, make Rincon de la Victoria an exciting and stimulating place to live!
Settlement in this area goes right back to prehistoric times, and important late Palaeolithic (35000-10000 BC) sites have been discovered here, from which an interesting collection of tools and StoneAge art has been extracted. The most important cave is Cueva del Higueron , also known as La Cueva del Tesoro (the Cave of the Treasure) due to a legend in which it was used as a refuge by five Moorish Kings, who hid great riches here. The cave is an important tourist attraction, and has been equipped with a sound and light show.
The excellent main road, the N340, which currently reaches Nerja and is due to extend to Almeria within the next few years, divides the coastal areas from the countryside and improves access to this lovely part of the Costa del Sol. Once off the main road, however, you can be sure of typical winding mountain roads, fed by unmarked stony tracks leading to a surprising number of fertile fincas.
The Romans also settled in this area, as is demonstrated by the remains of a 3rd-century AD fortress.
This is an open area, where it is possible to breathe, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist spots to the left of Málaga towards Marbella. It is beautifully rural and inviting, with clusters of white villages clinging to hillsides, but very little in between.
The Moors founded a settlement here to which they gave the name Bezmiliana. In the interior close to the Granadillas, at the site known as El Castellon, there are remains of an old Moorish fortress. After the reconquest, Bezmiliana was abandoned, and later a fishing village was established nearer to the coast, at the foot of Mount Victoria, and it is from this settlement that Rincon de la Victoria takes its name. The only ancient monument conserved in the town is a 19th-century fortress, of which remain the walls, with turrets at the corners.
If you have decided to move to Spain to experience not only the amazing and continuous pleasant weather, but also to become part of the Spanish way of life, then Axarquía is the place for you. But, don’t worry about being completely alone - others have discovered its beauty too!

ow that the hullabaloo of Christmas, New Year and the Three Kings is over and long forgotten for another year, the almond trees are breaking into blossom and the birds are hopping about twittering to each other eager to find a mate, there you are sitting in the warmth of the midday sun in just a t-shirt, and your thoughts wander past Spring and on into Summer. Hot sunny days, friends coming over for a sundowner, the long school holidays, the children visiting with the grandchildren – last year it was up and down to the beach, nowhere to park the car, the crowds, and a small fortune spent on drinks and ice creams. So this year, you say to yourself, a swimming pool is a must, a number one priority.
N
It is without doubt that the incorporation of a swimming pool into the garden of a private villa adds for its owners an extra quality of life, a sense of tranquillity and relaxation. A quick dip in the early morning to wake you up, another coming back from taking the dog for a walk or after a game of tennis or golf. Siesta time becomes dip and dose time. Another dip before supper and there is nothing better than a skinny dip before bedtime (but that is my secret)! A pool also adds to the quality and the value of your property.
With young children in the house it is nice to make a shallow play area for them. This can be done at the end of the pool, or to the side, or have a walk in pool. Children very quickly learn to swim and soon they will be racing you up and down in the main pool. Leave them to it; take your tipple and a book and go and sit in their shallow end and just relax. With very young children, toddlers, then a thought must be given to fencing to keep it safe. As to where to site the pool, this will depend on the amount of space that you have available. I personally do not like a pool directly in front of the lounge or kitchen. A pool is only in use four months of a year (unless it is covered and heated) and whereas during the hot summer months its appearance is cool, refreshing, inviting, the remainder of the year it can appear sad and cold. Ideally the pool should be placed in full sun, away from trees and with enough room for a terrace for the sun beds. If you have even more space available, add a barbecue, a garden room for storing the sun beds in the winter and a shower and toilet.
When planning a pool, ask yourself a couple of questions first. Is the pool going to be for just a jump in and cool off? Or are you into serious swimming? Are there children in the house? And where will it be sited?
It is a shame that when designing a pool most people do not think any further than a rectangular pool, tiled in blue with a Greek key frieze with maybe a dolphin or a shark on the bottom, half moon steps at one end and a white concrete border. With a little thought pools can be made much more interesting and either blend into their surroundings or shout out and make a statement. Here are a few ideas.
The most popular size for a jump in, cool off, play ball, float around on an air bed pool is 8 metres x 4 metres, 1.20 metres in the shallow end and sloping to 1.80 metres in the deep end. However if you are going in for serious exercise type swimming make the pool as long as possible. Also if you like diving in, it is a good idea to make the deep end no less than 2.00 metres.
If you live in an urbanization with a small plot try a free form pool, a figure eight or a kidney shape; if your plot is larger then let your garden flow into the free form and plant palms. If your plot slopes and the pool is to be down a level you could incorporate a waterfall. If your plot is very steep but you have a large flat area around your villa then an infinity pool is very impressive. Add interest to a rectangular pool with a fountain at

the end or maybe a fish pond, or place the pool steps to one side. In the campo go for the natural look. Think of an old ‘alberca’ – a water reserve – where the natural spring water would flow into a cattle trough and on into the tank and plan the filter return to do just that. Tile the campo pool with white or green tiles. The white gives a pale blue luminosity and reflects the colours of the vegetation surrounding the pool, whilst the green mixed with the blue of the sky turns into a soft, quiet turquoise colour. The construction of a swimming pool is simple but precise. There must be no shortcuts, no skimping on materials used. After the excavation has been made, a layer of concrete is poured to give a base for the execution of a double framework of steel reinforcing rods. These rods are 6 metres long and 10 mm thick and go down one side, across the bottom and up the other side with as few joins as possible. They are set 18-20cm apart. Horizontal rods are then tied to the vertical rods, again 18 – 20cm apart. With spacers in-between, more vertical and horizontal rods are placed to form a double framework. All the rods where they cross are tied in with wire. Shuttering will then be erected and secured. The plumbing and the light casings will be installed. Next comes the concrete, slowly poured and vibrated to eliminate any air bubbles. After the shuttering is taken down, the steps are constructed, the border put in place and the pool tiled. Then comes the housing for the motors and their installation along with the pool lights. Turn on the water and fill it up. The terrace is an integral part of the swimming pool and is best constructed at the same time. Allow at least a three meter wide terrace on one side of the pool, preferably at the shallow end, and one meter wide terracing on the other three sides. However, if space allows, have as large a terrace as possible. Many terraces here are tiled in the clay tiles
and, although there is a large choice of tiles, these come out tops as they are inexpensive, smooth on bare feet, and easy to sweep. At last all the work is finished, and all that remains to be done is to call all your friends over for the long awaited inauguration.
Tips and advice When requesting a quotation make sure that everything is included, ie the excavation and removal of earth, the tiling, the motors, together with their housing and installation. All concrete used should have a waterproofing agent added to it for extra security against leaks. Install an overflow and connect to a surface water drain – then when you forget to turn off the tap or a thunder cloud bursts, the terrace and garden do not get flooded. Install a tap for filling – saves using the hose but don’t forget to turn it off! Calculate the time necessary and use a kitchen timer (pinger) to remind you. A raised border stops a lot of dirt and dust getting into the pool. If constructing a terrace at the same time as the pool, tie reinforcing rods to the pool rods so that the terrace and pool is all one unit. This will reduce the risk of movement. If your pool motor room is under the terrace make sure the terrace is properly waterproofed with an asphalt membrane. Blue is not the only colour for a pool. Be different – try green, black, pink or mauve! Nor is the Greek key the only frieze – there are waves, geometric squares or zigzags. Let your dog enjoy the pool with you. It keeps the mobile dandruff at bay.

Costa Business Advice … Brought to you by David Fairweather from Bars in Spain SL
Is your business fit.... for business? (part 2)
PEOPLE Last month we discussed how as individuals we often start the New Year with new resolutions such as losing weight, giving up smoking or getting fit, but how as business owners we rarely question the performance of our business in the same way. Irrespective of the type or size of business there are a few fundamental “Fitness Tests” that we can carry out to see if we can improve the performance of a business. In order to do this we need to look at 4 main areas: Business Planning or Strategy (our Direction) People (our staff....including ourselves) Processes (The Systems we utilise in our business) Technology (The gadgets that we use to make our business more efficient) Last month we looked at Business Planning and highlighted the need for a plan to give our business direction. This month we look at the People working in your business and the important contribution they can play in making your business successful. “The people employed by any organisation are by far its most important asset” This is a term that some may argue or disclaim as not true, but one I personally believe to be completely true. You could invent a world beating product but if you don’t have good people to make it, market it, sell it, deliver and install it, your world beater will not pass Go! So ensuring that we use intelligent processes to recruit, train, motivate and manage a company’s workforce is absolutely fundamental to the success of our business. Another worthy principle is to..... “Make sure that your people have the skills to do the job.... before they need to do it!” This is something that we often find sadly lacking in the Costa del Sol. How many times have we all sat in restaurants here waiting to actually be served or hoping to get our meal at the same time as our fellow diners? This is either because the personnel in these businesses are wrongly recruited, have not been trained properly or are not motivated or committed to do the work they are being paid to do.
44 costa life
Getting the Right People So firstly we have to make sure that we recruit the right people to work for our business. To help achieve this we really need to write a job specification. This will help us to focus our minds on exactly what we want our staff to do, what skills they will need to carry out the work, and what business specific training they will need to work effectively for your business. It is also a useful discussion document for your applicants so that they can see clearly in black and white what the job entails and what will be expected of them. It is often said that when recruiting staff we subconsciously make our mind up whether we like someone within the first four minutes. We have to be careful though that we don’t recruit someone just because we like them. Conversely if we think they can do the job but are not so likeable, will they get on well with your clients and the rest of your team? It’s a delicate balance, but remember we need to recruit “the best qualified person to do the job” and that takes into account all aspects of the job! Will they “Fit” in? It is always important to make sure that any additional staff are going to fit in well with the existing team and that all the team are made aware of each others role in the company so that the proverbial “treading on toes” can be avoided. Take responsibility for your people I have always adopted the approach that as an employer I am responsible for my staff and if they fail as individuals then I have failed, either because I have recruited the wrong person or not given them the skills they needed to do the job well. Of course it is not always that simple and there is always the odd applicant that gets through the net for a free ride (albeit a short one), but if we do our recruiting correctly we should be able to eliminate those at the interview stage. Define their role Having determined our job specification we then need to advertise our vacancy in the right place, be it local paper, newsagent or daily national. When we get replies it is our first opportunity to assess them as potential employees, i.e. how do they handle themselves over the phone, what is their CV like and their covering letter or e-mail? Check their ability and suitability It also pays to devise some short tests depending on the nature of the vacancy. If you are looking for someone to work with figures then it is important to check that they can add up or at least use a calculator accurately. If you are looking for someone to be a team player then there are simple profiling tests that can be used to make sure that they can work well in a team environment. I have used a simple 15 minute test for over twenty years that is
incredibly accurate if used correctly. Remember also to check references where possible, many employers look for them but not many actually check them out! Motivation and Incentives I am also a great believer in staff incentives for all the company, not just sales and marketing personnel. This could be a form of performance related bonus, profit sharing, sales commission etc., but the more staff in the company that stand to benefit from the company’s success the more motivated and committed they will all be to making it happen! Give them a “Plan” In the same way that we need to create our business plan to give our business direction, it is also a good idea to create individual staff plans, particularly if they are new to the company or to the type of work they will be performing. Again this will help give them direction and performance milestones for mutual review and discussion at regular intervals. Monitor their Performance It is important that they know that their performance will be reviewed regularly and that such reviews are a forum for both employer and employee to air their views. Feedback from our staff is often invaluable and as employers we should promote as much interaction as possible from all our staff as they will have their own ideas on how their role and indeed the company’s role may be improved. Staff meetings provide a useful forum for such interaction but should always be well structured with an agreed agenda, held at a regular time and date, and should run for a pre-defined time period, say 1 to 2 hours for each meeting. Let them know they are doing a good job! So hopefully, you have the right people, they are well trained, well motivated and committed to making their job and your company successful, so remember to make them feel valued as members of your team, and if they are doing a good job, reward them accordingly! Take them out somewhere special occasionally and treat them to lunch or dinner. Try to remember their birthdays and remember to show your appreciation at Xmas........your investment will be well rewarded! In summary then, make sure........ Your People are Fit.... for your Business! Next month we will take a look at the different Processes or Systems that we use, and the use of Technology within the business. STEP BY STEP GUIDE
to buying a property in Spain brought to you by Richard Borthwick from European Mortgages
W
hen you have finished your long hard search and settled on the right Spanish Property for you, please don´t trip up at the final hurdle. Make sure you are never pushed into making a rash decision on a property until you are perfectly happy with your choice, and that you are sure you want to complete on the sale. There are, sadly, still horror stories of people being ripped off and conned out of small and large amounts of money, but if you go through an established estate agent and arrange suitable legal advice, your buying process should be smooth and trouble free from start to finish. One thing you will have to accept when buying a property in Spain is that the world of officialdom and paperwork is not quite what it is back home, and some things are done quite differently from the UK. You must try to accept this early on, to avoid more worry than necessary. Hopefully this short guide will give you some useful pointers to guide you through the process as smoothly as possible.
THE PROPERTY SEARCH >> Always do your research! The increasing use of the internet has proved a significant to both buyers and sellers of property, and is more and more becoming the first place people look for Spanish property. Some websites provide even more useful information such as area guides, property news, and even newsletters. Try and go through as many magazines as possible to get a feel for prices. You can pick some up in the UK in places like WH Smith´s but there are many more to choose from once you have arrived in Spain. Once you have narrowed down your search, it is time to contact an agent. Don´t be scared, many of them don´t bite! There are many more estate agents in Spain than there are in the UK, mostly because of the recent property boom, so you should try to use a little care when selecting an agent. Ask them if they are part of any recognised professional body, and maybe how many property listings they have on their books, or how long they been established in Spain, for example. The fact is that your feeling is usually the best judge. Other than that, a recommendation from someone who bought from the same company is probably the best way to choose.
DECISION TIME >> SO, you have seen 100´s of properties, your agent´s going grey, you can´t quite decide between property a and property b, it´s all
46 costa life
getting a bit much… and then you find it: The property you always imagined! Now the fun begins, as it´s time to make an offer. At this stage the Spanish system is no different to the UK. The buyer makes an offer and the vendor either accepts or rejects that offer. If agreement is reached verbally you should instruct a lawyer immediately to act on your behalf.
PRIVATE CONTRACT – The point of no return. This is the most important stage in the whole process, as if either party pull out afterwards, they must compensate the other party with (typically) 10% of the purchase price. On signing the private contract, the buyer will deposit 10% with the seller´s lawyer, and the other reason why this stage of the process is so important is that it defines a date by which time the parties must complete.
INSTRUCTING A LAWYER >> Choosing the right lawyer is a very important part of the buying process, and bear in mind that you could well be dealing with the same lawyer for some time to come, and they will probably end up acting on your behalf if you should sell the property. As in so many things, the best way to find someone good is a recommendation.
PAYING A HOLDING DEPOSIT >> Once you have made your decision and your lawyer is happy with the terms and conditions of anything you are asked to sign, it is time to pay a holding deposit. This deposit is usually 3000 Euros on smaller properties, and 6000 on larger properties, and is usually held by the estate agent, in order to take the property off the market until the private contract is signed. These deposits are often paid “subject to mortgage” until a certain date. This means that buyers are given a certain amount of time to arrange the finance, and will not lose their deposit if the finance is not granted.
PUBLIC CONTRACT – The notary public. This is the final stage in buying a Spanish property. Both parties must attend the notary on or before the date stipulated by the private contract, at which time the balance of the purchase price is paid, and a new title deed is prepared and signed by the notary. Mortgages will also require a separate deed, and outstanding mortgages must also be cancelled at this point. Once the deeds are signed they will be then be submitted to the land registry for registration.
THE BUYER´S COSTS >> As a general rule, the costs of buying a property in Spain should be no more than 10% of the purchase price. These costs are as follows: Transfer tax: the Spanish equivalent of stamp duty, currently 7%. Lawyer´s fees: most lawyers in Spain charge 1% of the purchase price, depending on what services you ask them to proved. They will probably charge more if you ask them to act as “Power of Attorney”, for example. Notary and Registration Fees: These should be no more than around 1000 Euros, depending on the price of the property. The fees may rise if you are taking a large mortgage, for example, as banks and mortgage brokers in Spain charge higher opening fees that UK equivalents. They will be repaid as part of the mortgage total, however, so it is difficult to give an average figure. All other costs should be paid by the seller, including all estate agents fees, capital gains tax, and an incremental land tax called “plus valia”. As a final piece of advice, the oldest one in the book probably holds more true today than ever before: Buyers beware, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

We were delighted with the work that Paula Monaghan Interiors undertook for us in our El Soto property. Paula provided a pleasant, cheerful and helpful service which resulted in a beautifully furnished apartment that perfectly fits our needs. Amazingly, this all took place without the need for us to visit Spain as the whole process was undertaken by emailed photographs and telephone conversations. On our arrival in Spain, we were amazed to find the apartment complete in every detail and ready for our use – even the beds were made up! The service that Paula provided for us was excellent and we have no hesitation in recommending her to others.

Y
es, retro is back, with its funky colours, bold patterns, curvy appliances and cheeky themes: all the ingredients for an easy to assemble krazy kitchen. A time of the Ford Mustang, VW Beetle, poodle skirts and an explosion of colour, the retro years just keep coming back with their original schemes and with a modern twist so, whatever tickles your fancy, you’re sure to add a little splash of the past to your home. The retro years are mainly the 1950s to the 1970s, and the word ‘retro’ means reminiscent of the past. This was an era that started a revolution in design, introducing pop art, bold design motifs and pushing the word ‘funky’ into our dictionaries. This look is so easy to achieve, even on a small budget, or whether you just want a dash of the retro bug added to your home. The kitchen is a room of many functions, becoming the centre of family life. It’s a place for getting together to cook, to dine, relax and entertain, so the kitchen must offer an efficient and comfortable environment where the family congregates, chats and feels at home. Why not add a little fun to it too…
Bright & Beautiful: Start by choosing the colour you want your kitchen to be, ranging from deep to pastel shades. Be it bright yellow or luscious red or soft green, you can also use all tones of this shade or different tones/contrasting for a unique look. The most common retro colours, especially in the modern world, are red, black and white. Themes were also very popular in the Retro years, particularly cherries and strawberries, along with cows, pigs and flowers. You may not wish to use one of the above themes but it certainly would add some fun to your kitchen.

Funky Bits:
If you don’t have the budget to install a new kitchen, you can easily change the look of a fairly average kitchen by just changing the colour of your tiles, both on the walls and on the floor. A melamine floor with a large square pattern in black and white or red and white is another cheap option to install, and creates the same effect as a tiled floor. If you have a white kitchen you have the easiest task as black and red tiles (or even yellow and orange if you’re a real funkster) can be added on a cheap budget, whether you change your tiles completely or just paint your existing wall tiles with specialist tile paint. With an existing wooden kitchen you can paint it whatever colour you want, or just use a simple paint and grain and add colour with accessories.
Vintage trays hung on the wall can add a colourful twist. Grommets and beaded chains can be used instead of a door into the kitchen or used as a window treatment. Add a shelf with old collectables as a visual display. Light up a vintage sign to add a touch of drama. Make your own vintage sign using a scanner and decoupage the image onto wood for an original piece. You can pick up some great pieces and little gems to use in your retro kitchen at your local car boot sale. Add canisters to your shelf for a true ’50s look. There are fabulous retro style clocks, electricals, radios and other accessories available in stores and shops nationwide. You can even get your hands on an old fashioned telephone in a range of colours and styles. Add an apron in a bright colour to create a vintage effect and give quick visual impact.
Grub’s Up: Today there is a large variety of kitchen electrical appliances including the funky Smeg fridge in a choice of retro colours and styles. There are also fantastic cooker/ovens from Baumatic Retro 2 and Candy ranges that instantly give a kitchen that funky edge. There are also retro ranges from Hotpoint with that typical authentic look.
TIPS:
Sitting Pretty: Create a typical diner area in your new retro kitchen using an island unit and bar style stools complete with a chrome frame, or have a booth fitted. Diner booths are available in a range of seating options, making it fun and functional, and instantly giving the room personality.
If you research and plan your retro kitchen you should not go wrong. Just don’t overdo it by adding too much as you will miss the look and theme. COVERING UP THE WIRE ver the last ten years there has been a noticeable increase in the use of wire fencing to enclose fincas and other plots of land. People have various reasons for doing this, whether it is for security and privacy or to provide pets and animals with a safe space, allimportant to our lifestyle here in Spain. Small plots are often enclosed by walls, especially in towns and villages. Inland, chain link fencing crowned with barbed wire is usually perceived as the most satisfactory and economical way of enclosing a plot. Most people would probably agree that the use of this material is an extremely unsightly solution.
O
There are things we can do to cover up ugly fencing whilst making the environment more beautiful and increasing the security and privacy of our property. One solution is to cover the fence with shade netting. In my opinion this increases the ugly appearance of the fence. It is better to cover fences with plants.
56 costa life
We have a wealth of plants that can be used for this purpose and which can also add much to our enjoyment of life in rural AndalucĂa. The climate of Southern Spain enables us to take advantage of a huge range of climbing vines that are ideal for covering fences. The choice is simply vast. There are excellent evergreen climbers, such as ivy, which are cheap and need minimal maintenance. Many people prefer climbers that provide flower colour; others prefer flowers with scent. Climbers that are evergreen, with flowers having both colour and scent, are enduringly popular. Few are better than the jasmines. The genus Jasminum has been used in Spanish gardens as far back as Moorish times, when scent was an essential element of the formal garden. There are several species of jasmine for use here and most are available in local garden centres. Some climb indefinitely, while others become shrubbier with age. On the
whole, all will withstand direct sun. By far the most common jasmine is Jasminum officinale, which carries white, scented flowers from summer onwards. Depending on the weather this jasmine may flower throughout the year. Without support it will remain shrubby so it is important to train it over fencing, if that is the desired effect. Flowering about now is the most powerfully scented of the jasmines in our area, Jasminum polyanthum. This will ramble and climb easily over shrubs and fencing, even electricity pylons – another ugly sight in many gardens. The flowers are white with a pink blush, carried on panicles amongst green fernlike foliage. Unfortunately this species can be cut down by frost during harsh winters, but is well worth a try in any area. Another commonly seen jasmine is Jasminum azoricum, which has a luxurious scent especially during the evening after long summer days. This species is pollinated by moths that are drawn towards its scent.

Rosa banksiae
Written by
Simon Hill Jasminum polyanthum Pyrostegia venusta) has been The Flame Vine (P flowering since late last year and is one of the most spectacularly showy plants around, particularly when set against a background of evergreen foliage. This climber will grow to great distances and happily grow over fencing or into trees. Panicles of bright fiery orange flowers attract everyone’s eye when passing this outstanding plant. Although tender to frost, it is well worth trying to introduce this plant into your garden where the brightness of the flowers compensates for the lack of scent and lifts the spirits during the short and sometimes gloomy days of winter. From the rose family, the evergreen Banksian Rosa banksiae) is not commonly seen in Rose (R our region though is extremely rewarding growing over a fence or garden wall. There are several forms though we are most likely to encounter ‘lutea’. Double lemon yellow flowers are carried on panicles densely covering long, arching stems. Unfortunately, there is little scent but this rose always delights the eye. It begins flowering at the beginning of the New Year and lasts over a couple of months. There are some forms and varieties of Rosa banksiae that have scent but are not easily found in our area. Even a non-scented variety of this rose amply rewards the gardener!
To discuss all the plants that can ‘cover up’ our fencing will take up too much space, however it is important to plant what you like, whether it has colour, scent or evergreen foliage. People either love or loathe Bougainvillea. Bright blousy flowers aside, the only thing in favour of Bougainvillea as a hedge is its sharp spines on long, arching stems which give added security to any property. Mature specimens of Bougainvillea can become a serious menace that is difficult to eradicate. In the end gardeners must plant what they want to see when they are in the garden. Successfully growing species that are ‘risky’ with respect to the weather is often one of the greatest joys of gardening here in Spain. Many climbers may be seen at their best when planted against the background of a hedge or other green shrubs. This background itself becomes important and creates a different effect when the climber is no longer in flower. We have many options. Maintenance should be an issue people take into account before deciding whether to plant a hedge. Cypress hedging is a popular choice in the ‘campo’ and need not be dark green. Cupressus arizonica is a silver-leaved cypress that has proven to be excellent and can be left to its own devices or maintained by clipping annually.
A common misconception here in Southern Spain is that Leyland Cypress will grow well. This is not always true. Northern Europe has a greater amount of rain and there this species grows very quickly, whereas here it is not a water-wise choice and it does not like extreme heat. Try Thuya instead. Other options Laurus nobilis) available to gardeners are Bay (L Punica granatum). Bay is and Pomegranate (P slow growing and low-maintenance and Pomegranate, which makes an excellent hedge, grows quickly and needs clipping twice a year. Many climbers look well growing through and against these plants, which will shelter the more tender climbers from cold winds and frosts. So if we have to fence our properties, then we also have an opportunity, by clothing ugly wire with beautiful plants, to retain and also add to the beauty of the surrounding environment. DON’T LET YOUR COMPUTER CATCH A COLD If your computer is running slow or opening web pages you didn’t click you could be suffering from a virus? Hardly a month goes by without a story in the news about a clever computer geek that has written a virus that is designed to take over all the computers in the world. Even before the last chime of 2007 had bonged computer users were bombarded with an email titled “Happy New Year” and, as it played a nice message on the screen that said “Happy 2007” the nasty email contained a virus that turned off your antivirus software and downloaded other malicious software that sent your personal data to the virus writer.
Virus removal is not home user territory these days, so if your computer does get infected, seek professional advice.
This type of computer menace was first written about as long ago as 1995. The menace is called spyware, adware or malware and is designed to, infiltrate your private files, collect your personal information then cause as much damage to your files as possible. So how do you protect yourself from these emerging pests? The New Year worm taught us that on its own antivirus software are not enough and most experts recommend beefing up your protection with software called anti-spyware in addition to your antivirus tools. These nasty additions can, if left untreated, damage the data in your hard disk. Some antivirus tools now recognise spyware but tools like Microsoft’s defender and Lavasoft’s Ad-aware are a must.
Internet and Telephone
IN THE CAMPO There are many companies here on the Costa del Sol that are offering Internet and Telephone services, some in places that telecom operators like telefonica can’t reach, all without the need for an existing telephone line. Most use their own system; some provide excellent customer service (not all mind you!) and rates start from around €29.99 per month and connect you FREE or for a small connection fee. Even in campo areas. High speed Internet access is essential, modern technology allows some companies to offer blistering fast speeds so you no longer need to be cut off in the countryside. Telephone services can be added by the better companies and they will supply you with a standard Spanish telephone number, cheap calls and will work with all types of projects from 1 line to a complete PBX. The more technical companies will supply systems that cover your home, office, building, complex or town. Security Cameras are a must when living in the countryside. Security cameras are usually wireless and can be situated at any location and monitored from anywhere via a web browser, with motion detection that can send a sms message to you mobile phone or pager this is the modern way to secure your home in the country. In the past few years there have been a crop of these companies growing

Back up devices Have you got a back-up copy of all those valuable photos, music files or work documents that are stored on your computer? There are many reasons computer users lose data, apart from virus infection, hardware failure and accidental deletion, theft of your computer or fire are another major causes of data loss. Back-up devices are available in all shapes and sizes. If you have only a few files to back-up and have a DVD or CD writer you can store your files on CD or DVD disk and if a disaster happens you have copies of your valuable files. If you have many files to store and need to access them on a regular basis an external hard disk will allow you to keep an archive that you can access just by plugging the device into your computer, another convenient option for storing and transporting copies of your essential files is a USB Flash Drive. STRANGE BUT TRUE Celebs say the strangest things… Brooke Shields ‘Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life.’ Britney Spears ‘I get to go to lots of overseas places, like Canada.’ Christina Aguilera ‘So, where’s the Cannes Film Festival being held this year? Colin Farrell ‘It’s not that I’m stupid. I just don’t think sometimes.’ Keanu Reeves ‘I’m a meathead. I can’t help it, man. You’ve got smart people and you’ve got dumb people.’
Thought for the day… FUNNY JOKE…
Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.
Only three doors… an airline captain was breaking in a new blonde stewardess. The route they were flying had a layover in another city. Upon their arrival, the captain showed the stewardess the best place for airline personnel to eat, shop and stay overnight. The next morning, as the pilot was preparing the crew for the day’s route, he noticed the new stewardess was missing. He knew which room she was in at the hotel and called her up wondering what happened. She answered the phone, crying, and said she couldn’t get out of her room. “You can’t get out of your room?” the captain asked, “Why not?” The stewardess replied: “There are only three doors in here,” she sobbed, “one is the bathroom, one is the closet, and one has a sign on it that says ‘Do Not Disturb’!”
Is this your kid?
It took me along time to learn… Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them. You should not confuse your career with your life. Never lick a steak knife. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she’s pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time was age eleven. A person, who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person.

Considerations when Travelling with our Pet

W
e are going to explain in a few words what are the rules of travel for some countries that have some strict laws for some animals. To travel with dogs, cats and ferrets to the United Kingdom , Ireland, Sweden, Norway and Malta , apart from the European passport, rabies vaccination, external and internal desparasitation and microchip, it will also be necessary to have a blood test to measure the rabies antibodies levels in your pet. The European passport registers the record of all vaccinations, against rabies and other illnesses, also the date and time of the last internal and external desparasitation. It also provides the number of the microchip and the implantation date. Also contains a specific place for a sign “veterinary health certificate. The rabies antibodies levels are measured by taking a blood test from your pet at least a month after rabies vaccination. The serum is then sent to a special laboratory where they analyze it and return the results to us. This process takes between one and three months depending on the lab we’re using. Then, if the results are favourable, to enter U.K or Ireland you must wait six months from the day we took the sample of blood from your pet. To travel to Morocco we need, apart from the European passport, an official health certificate from the vet, stating the

If the chosen country to go with our pet is Russia , apart from the European passport it is also necessary to vaccinate against rabies at least one day before travelling, and also a health certificate signed by a vet one or two days before the journey to stated that the animal is in healthy condition. It is important for us to realize that in order to travel with our pets to some countries we must plan at least six months before the journey. If it is not possible to take our pet with us, we can look for a good kennel to send him while we are abroad or find a person we trust to take care of him. In order to obtain the exact information applicable to the country of your destination, it is advisable to speak to the embassy of that country. More information you can ask your vet and they will give you the best advice.

Where are you
Going?
H
ave you ever watched a hamster on a wheel? It runs frantically trying to keep going without falling off and yet it’s not going anywhere!
On the other hand, have you ever stopped to think about the human race? How many climb on to a revolving wheel and start running, trying desperately not to fall off, but yet not really knowing where they are headed. There is no destination – just a frantic running to keep up with the spinning of the wheel with all the energy they can muster. Some think the faster they can run, the more successful they will be. Others think that with a lot of effort they might just be able to run past all the others and get to the front. The front of what? Of where? Where is everyone headed? Some are aiming for success in business, to make a fortune and live like kings with power at their fingertips. Others are running to escape the rat-race and achieve freedom for themselves but running nevertheless. Some are running at top speed to keep up with the Joneses and are in fact secretly desiring to overtake them. So most people are running somewhere towards something but very few have any clear idea of their ultimate destination, rather like the hamster in his desperate attempt to stay on the wheel which keeps spinning. If we simply slow down for a while to look around at the beauty surrounding us, we may realise just how much we are missing. Take a moment to watch a butterfly flit from shrub to shrub or take time to observe a bee settling on the stamen of a flower. Look at the Mediterranean sea stretching out to the horizon with some clouds scudding across the sky and enjoy the beauty of nature. The sea, the mountains, the flowers and shrubs, the magnificent trees are all part of the amazing creation around us. Simply stopping in our busy lives to examine the hibiscus flower with its simple but incredible beauty can be a joy beyond description.
Whether or not you believe in a Creator, it must still be acknowledged that the natural world around us has a beauty which cannot be ignored. For those who believe in God, we know that all this beauty has been given to us to enjoy during our time on this earth. If we ignore it in our headlong dash towards an unknown destination, we may find ourselves one day realising that our life on earth is drawing to a close and we have wasted so much time. It is a known medical fact that stress is the modern day cause of most illnesses and yet many people seem driven to live at a pace that causes continual stress. Why not take time out to meditate on the beauty of nature all around us and make a decision to start enjoying it. Take a leisurely walk along the beach or in the country and ask the Creator to show you His creation. If you doubt the existence of God, try sincerely asking Him to reveal Himself to you. We have the pressure of success forced upon us from all directions. Advertising insists that we MUST have this or that car, we MUST live a particular lifestyle, we MUST smoke a particular brand of cigarette or drink a particular brand of alcohol. We must, we must, we must! But God says “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:2830) God’s desire is for us to live a life of rest in Him, enjoying His peace and joy. Slow down and let the Lord lead you into a new life for the rest of the time you have left on this earth.

L .I.V.E. Fungerolia was alive with laughter and Christmas cheer on the 19th December when over 50 young people from the ‘Ciudad de los Ninos’ (Children of the City) came to a Christmas party hosted by the Charity L.I.V.E and the owners of El Potro restaurant. Adam and Wendy owners of the El Potro, offered their well known and much loved restaurant to be the venue for the party, the tables were decorated by Creative Parties adding a real sense of fun including a large Santa made out of balloons being stationed by the front door, all this added to the wonderful spread of food that was laid on for the Children really got the party started. The Entertainment was a mixture of puppetry, circus acrobatics and comedy that kept the children occupied for hours, Santa also managed to put in an appearance, but of course Santa couldn´t do his job without a sack full of toys. It was wonderful to see the looks on their faces as Santa called them up by name and they were given individually selected presents:- Rita the volunteer and coordinator for the ‘Children of the City’ had kindly supplied the ages, gender and names of all the young people and children to ‘Andalusian Dream Homes’ who donated all the toys. They allocated individual staff to go and purchase gifts and they also donated a further 200 toys so that any children who attended the home but could not make the party didn’t feel left out.
Thank you’s to:El Potro’ Restaurant: 952 470 284 For food/Venue. Andalusian Dream Homes’ For ALL the presents. Creative Parties’ 637 015 089 for the decorations All the volunteers & of course Father Christmas It is important to state that the Spanish authorities give the ‘Children of the City’ just enough money for the full time residence. It is only the private donations from people and organisations such as L.I.V.E. that allow the priests to offer extra services. One of these services includes going into the city each day to offer a service that involves them taking a mini bus through the streets of Malaga each morning. Picking up young people and children as young as six who are put on the streets each day. Giving them housing, food, clothing, education and returning them back to their families in the evening. L.I.V.E representatives have visited this home and were incredibly moved by the work going on there. If living in Spain means more to you than just ‘sitting in the sun’ then help L.I.V.E to support this wonderful work. L.I.V.E. ‘Los Internacionales Viven en Espana’ (The International Community Supporting Life in Spain). L.I.V.E has been created to enable ex-pats to be involved in helping needy people who live in Spain, raise and extend their quality of life. Another BIG thank you must be said for all the people who have been so generous in their donations to the charity and indeed have attended our fund raising events, there are more to come in 2007 and If you wish to go on L.I.V.E’s mailing list for future fund raising events please call:Brian Marsh 620 791 441 – Charity Director Lisa Grant – 666 11 3839 – Public Relations

eople driving from Alhaurin el Grande to Coin may have noticed a big shop window in the industrial area Poligono la Rosa in Alhaurin el Grande with the name of inter-data in the window. “Seems to be a computer shop” most people definitely think. But it is much more than a computer shop. Not many people know that these premises actually contain a local manufacturer of quality computers, a distributor of IT equipment and a very rare multilingual environment.
The company which is now named Inda-data was founded in April 2005 in Alhaurin El Grande, Malaga. It started as an affiliate of a Danish manufacturer and distributor of IT equipment. During its first year the company soon showed that focusing on good “old fashion” values like, service, support, after sales service added to quality, development and maintenance was a winner and drew in customers. Inda-data is a multilingual environment, our staff and technicians speak many languages and are able to help customers from most of the major European countries in their own language. The also open 6 days a week with no siesta. In October 2006 the management bought the shares from the Danish owner to be able to focus even more on the maintenance and service part of the company. With a new name and a new attitude inter-data is now known as Inda-data. The company still has it headquarter in Alhaurin el Grande but is now expanding its business to more areas inland and on the coast. At the Inda-data shop in Alhaurin el Grande you will find the biggest specialized computer shop in the Malaga area with an integrated internet café. Inda-data only do computers. No hair dryers, refrigerators or other electrical goods that can take away the focus from the computers not jack of all trades but masters of one. And we have parking right outside so you won’t have to carry your computer half way across town You will also find a “business to business” corner in the shop where you can discuss your needs and get the best advice for your business. Basically Inda-data handles all IT related issues from removing a virus to a complete computer network, an upgrade to your existing system to adding a webcam. The philosophy of Inda-data s.l. is simple, says Gert Uth, the MD of the company. “Our biggest asset is satisfied costumers. That is what we are aiming for and our service and support of existing customers proves this over and over. We want to deliver a quality service every time”. “This is only possible if our employees have the same goal, which is why we put lots of effort into the training and development of our staff and management. We want to be an attractive alternative – for our clients as for our employees.”

Specialising in providing Independent Financial Advice and Management Services for expatriate and international investors worldwide, we are one of the region’s premier Independent Advisors. This independence ensures unbiased and experienced recommendations for both private individual and corporate clients.
We offer services covering all the key areas of financial planning, not only basic investment, tax planning, retirement planning, saving, protection and mortgage advice, but also including the provision of international corporate and trust services both to private and corporate clients.
We have a network providing advice to clients not only in Europe but throughout the world from fully committed and qualified consultants, with a main administrative office providing support in Spain.
Investment and tax planning can be likened to a visit to the dentist, it is something we all know we should do but we put it off until tomorrow. It is often too late once the pain has set in; the tooth has rotted and needs to be extracted. The only difference between this consultation and that with a financial adviser is that the “patient” is probably not aware that he may have a problem until it is too late. It is also unlikely that the “patient” went along to see the adviser; unless he had been referred by his lawyer, accountant or a good friend. To use a common tag line “Prevention is Cheaper than the Cure”
Our policy is very clear and simple - “To optimise the financial position of our clients through a firm commitment to excellence and a quality of service that is second to none.” We currently place business with many Internationally recognised institutions, fulfilling their requirements in terms of business standards and efficiency, whilst also maintaining quality of service and impartial advice for our clients.
From our Head Office based in Estepona, Southern Spain, O.I.B. represents many financial institutions including international banks, leading investment and insurance houses. All of our consultants are trained to the highest standards and are fully qualified in international finance. They are able to offer a truly ‘bespoke’ and discreet service. This provides an ability to retain the loyalty of existing clients, whilst also attracting increasing numbers of new investors, “based on mutual trust and quality performance.”
A common enquiry we receive will be from a widow or widower, recently bereaved who has just received the Inheritance Tax bill. Where do they find the funds to pay the bill? Can they afford to stay in the house? It is tremendously important to plan and clearly quantify your tax obligations now and in the future. Putting your affairs in order early helps not only you but your beneficiaries The options available to investors have never been greater in number than now, regardless of where you may be living. The opportunities open to the expatriate can be even more favourable and are well worth investigating since such doors are closed to the domiciled resident. . Many people living in Spain are not Tax resident either in Spain or their country of Departure for a period of time. These people will have to “choose” eventually ……the European Union Savings Tax Directive will force this.

P
osh Pets – Spain is getting known as “The small company with a BIG heart! - Everything that surrounds the business of Posh Pets – Spain is small, personal, quaintly unique & all under one roof!!
A new venture that is commencing this month is Polite Pets which is a “workshop”
It moved location in May 2006 to just 3km outside Alhaurin el Grande on the A404 between Alhaurin el Grande & Coin just 20 minutes inland from Marbella. It all started for its founder Rachel here in Spain with the starting of an English dog grooming salon “Hair off the Dog II”. Opening a salon in rural Spain was not easy but as the salon was not attached to a Spanish veterinary practice Rachel was able to prevent the “fear” factor for pooches when visiting the establishment for a “doggy makeover”. Rachel was born & bred in the canine world so her experience & expertise in this area is what helps promote Posh Pets-Spain. Twelve months after opening the grooming salon it then also became a Training Centre for potential Canine Beauticians. The intense two week course is aimed at the UK market and students can enjoy the Spanish sunshine at the same time as learning a new career; however students are now coming from further a field in Europe as the course has proved to be far more cost effective than other courses that have been on offer particularly those in the UK & Ireland.
combining obedience classes, behavioral & animal understanding as well as pet Reiki. There is a lack of anything like this inland so Rachel has teamed up with friends that are specialists in their own field to help produce this fabulous opportunity for pet owners to teach, understand and care for their pooches!!
For further information on all the above please visit: www.poshpets-spain.com or telephone 952 597 035
Due to the demand from Rachel’s clients Posh Pets offers small scale pet care for some of the dogs that are clients of the salon. Posh Pets offers Homecare as well as onsite private boarding. More often than not these pets need a little more TLC than what can sometimes be offered at a large kennel environment, whether it be because they are nervous, on medication or because they need a more “kindergarten like” stay. Posh Pets launched its Pet Relocation service by land which is the kinder means of pet travel - www.poshpets-can-travel.com is the only company DEFRA APPROVED COMPARTMENTS” whose customized vehicles have “D To ensure the full safety of your pet, so luxury travel in customized people carriers with onboard fridges, DVD players and Music systems are all part of the chauffeur driven service by land for pets traveling to & from the UK, France or Spain offering an alternative to flying. Posh Pets-Spain also boasts its own on-line designer pet clothing range as well as distinctively different, beautiful collars & leads from the “Up Country” American collections. The online shop has top quality pet clothing, designer beds, Personalized “bling bling” collars, there is even a section of of items for the “Posh Parents” too – hand designed Paw print “bling” t-shirts with matching hand bags & matching pooch T-shirts are a few of the unique designs on offer.

Costa Shopping
I
f you can drag yourself away from the beach long enough to venture out shopping, the Costa del Sol offers a wide selection of retail outlets catering for all tastes and budgets. From shopping malls such as La Cañada shopping centre in Marbella, La Colonia shopping centre in San Pedro de Alcantara and the new Myramar centre in Fuengirola to small boutiques and markets, there’s something for everyone. Along with those favourites from home, United Colors of Benetton and Dunnes Stores, Spain offers its own chain stores such as El Corte Ingles, Zara, Bershka and Oysho. El Corte Ingles is one of Spain’s leading department stores, featuring Spanish aswell as International designers. Zara and Bershka offer a wide selection of up to theminute fashions for men and women at high street prices. Oysho, one of my favourites, sells the best sexy/sporty underwear and nightwear. Marbella and Puerto Banus are where you’ll get the chance to really flash your cash, featuring stores selling Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Gianni Versace and Gucci to name but a few as well as smaller boutiques selling lesser known designer wear. Most large stores open 10am till 9pm but many of the smaller boutiques will shut for siesta. Credit cards are accepted in all department stores and most shopping outlets. Proof of identity may be requested to complete a credit card transaction.
MARKET PLACES
L
ooking for a bargain? Try one of the open-air markets that most towns on the Costa feature. Leather goods, linen and ceramics are particularly good value but there’s always a very varied selection of goods on sale. Many of the markets combine antiques and new goods aswell as local fresh produce. On a Saturday, Fuengirola hosts the biggest flea market on the Costa.
