Șezãtoare - An Updated Concept

objective/context

general presentation

Assan’s Mill is one of the oldest and most valuable industrial landmarks still left standing in Bucharest. After a series of fires, it is left abandoned and in the verge of being demolished. The project aims at reactivating the site as a center that revolves around traditional crafts, strongly playing into the strong, lasting bond between Assan’s Mill and the surrounding area. By using modern day adaptive re-use techniques, the project aims at revisiting and updating local customs, striving towards bringing back the environment that was part of Bucharest’s essence. One of the project’s main concerns is to take advantage of the site’s layout, comprised of multiple, separate, buildings, in order to create spaces that work great individually but also complement each other, creating a rich, immersive user experience. The project focuses on a fist stage of development for the site, the reuse and extension of the site’s valuable buildings - essentially creating a core structure that truly captures the overall vision. An Open Air Bazaar

Only the external brick walls of the original, nineteenth century mill remain. It now becomes a multipurpose space. When it’s empty, the building becomes an exhibit in itself. When in hosts events, such as a bazaar focused on hand made products and traditional techniques, it becomes a place full of life. A steel support system is set in place, with a roof covered with Efte waterproof netting, providing a clear perception over the original structure and what’s new.

A Museum Of Traditional Fairs

The former grain silo now hosts a museum of traditional Romanian fairs - a look back at their evolution and contribution to Romanian culture throughout history. The ground and first floor host a D.I.Y. shop and a specialty bookstore, focused on traditional craftsmanship techniques. The museum itself is located on the upper floor, a massive free space fit for large exhibitions.

Șezãtoare - an updated concept

“Șezãtoarea” is a Romanian tradition in which people gather to work, but also socialize. The building aims at revising that concept by creating fluent, communicative spaces geared towards traditional cratfsmanship. The building’s core consists of a series of interconnected workshops combined with spaces for socializing.

EXPO CENTER ACADEMIC BUCHAREST, ROMANIA octavian NECULAI 2011/ 5th year of study “Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism” Bucharest

objective/context general presentation

Situated in Bucharest’s East city limit, the site must become a focal point for the town’s future development. The proposed architectural program is an expo center, meant to attract both the city’s residents as well as tourists. Having little to no adjacent constructions, the site may be viewed as a blank slate and the perfect opportunity for a more conceptual approach. Inspired by Salvador Dali’s surrealism, the proposition strives towards establishing a connection between different parts of the city’s outer limits, making them collide into a central area. The complex combines organic forms with severe straight lines under an industrial aesthetic, highlighting 3 experimental spaces - Dali’s elephants.

COLLECTIVE HOUSING ACADEMIC BUCHAREST, ROMANIA emil BARBU POPESCU 2010/ 3rd year of study “Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism” Bucharest

SITE PLAN

objective/context general presentation

A former industrial lot in Bucharest’s city center must be transformed into a collective housing project. The site is constrained by an existing building, as well as multiple blind walls from adjacent lots. The proposed layout draws inspiration from the site’s characteristics - the blind walls are used as generators for the playful volumetry. The lot’s industrial origins are also referenced by the aesthetic. However, for a project that involves housing, green spaces are desirable, so the solution sets a balance between construted and free spaces.

CONCEPT COLLAGE

objective/context general presentation

The project is defined by new beginnings. Following the demolition of several buildings, a now vacant plot of land in the center of Bucharest must be home to a new cultural center. The project must pay tribute to the history and tradition that surrounds it. A transparent, almost invisible, ground floor allows people from different social circles to come together and interact, while the upper levels feature an auditorium and multiple experimental spaces and workshops, in order for various artists to be able to use them as a means of teaching their trade to others. A 50m observation tower becomes both a signal for what’s hopefully to become a landmark, as well as a reflection on the project’s surroundings.
