ational Vocational & Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) in collaboration with GIZ has taken a positive initiative to form the Sector Skills Councils for the Hospitality, Construction and Textile sectors in Pakistan. Sector Skills Councils are meant to support the reform of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system in Pakistan. They are intended to be a mechanism to secure the greater involvement of employers in the design and implementation of Government-funded trainings and to increase the quality and scale of training. The country has many natural resources, ambitious infrastructure developments, a growing domestic market and expanding middleclass, and its geographical position places it close to some of the world’s largest and growing markets. A better skilled population will help to explore the country’s economic potential. The SSCs will work in the following areas and will play a vital role in achieving the intended objectives. •
Providing labor market information and assessments to the employers and policy makers for the skills priorities and policy development
•
Providing practical guidance and assistance to employers on training policy and practices
•
Supporting and developing skill standards, competencybased training programs and customized training solutions to meet the human resource demands
•
Addressing the capacity-building needs of the training service providers in order for them to better respond to the human resource demand, including training of trainers and strengthening the ability of individual employers to develop their employees Advocating and lobbying on issues, challenges and opportunities of all the three sectors, as and when required
•
NAVTTC’s initiative with the support of GIZ to set up these sector skills councils will pave way for improving the TVET sector and strengthening the selected economic sectors in Pakistan.

Chefs around the globe celebrate their ‘Day’ on 20th October every year. International Chefs Day 2017 was celebrated by the chefs of Pakistan with all the dignity and grandeur. Chefs Association of Pakistan (CAP), which is the only representative association of the chefs of Pakistan, is maintaining a tradition of celebrating the day with zeal and commitment to unfold new horizons of learning, growth, development and exposure for the chefs of Pakistan in harmony with international fraternity of Chefs.

his year the celebration of ICD 2017 was organized by its strategic partner, C o l l e g e o f To u r i s m & H o t e l Management (COTHM) Pakistan. As is the tradition every year, a large congregation of hundreds chefs marched together to show their solidarity and togetherness with the chefs nationally and internationally. In a formal ceremony at the conference hall of COTHM, the event was initiated with the recitation of the Holy Qur’aan. Mr. Zaheer Ahmad, the COO of COTHM in his welcome address extended his warm felicitations to the chefs of Pakistan and the ones celebrating their day internationally. He expressed his resolve to support and promote the talent of chefs at all forums of the world. Later, the senior chefs and executive members of CAP expressed their best wishes for the chefs around the globe. In a betting arrangement, the ‘Professional Excellence Awards’ were conferred on the chefs who made their invaluable contributions while serving in their profession. They reiterated their commitment with their profession and promised to transfer their knowledge to the younger generation of chefs. Based on the theme of WORLDCHEFS, ‘HEALTHY FOOD FOR HEALTHY HEROES’ a culinary competition among the school children was organized at COTHM in which the young students freely demonstrated their talent. A three days event culminated into the ICD 2017 celebrations and the young students were generously acknowledged by the senior chefs. The Chefs

Muhammad Zubair Khan, who graced the event as the Chief Guest, praised the precious contributions of the chefs in raising the standards of culinary arts, food safety, hygiene and the presentation of food. He expressed his resolve to provide the chefs of Pakistan with every possible support in bring their talent in front of the world. He also thanked the management of WORLDCHEFS for keeping CAP abreast with the world and engaging its chefs in the international culinary competitions. He said, Pakistan has enormous talent but we need to nurture it and showcase it in front of the world. In the end, Master of the Ceremony, Babar Sheikh, expressed his gratitude for the participants for taking out their precious time to attend the ICD 2017 event celebrations.

TRAVELING
IN AMERICA People around the world like to give the US a hard time - they like to make fun of their accents, they're bewildered by the many friendly smiles, and overactive air conditioners are a great source of concern (and cold). But stereotypes aside, what are the real-life American quirks that shock foreigners? We looked at a recent Reddit thread that had non-Americans share the strangest things they learned about the US after visiting.
American portion sizes are bewildering to foreigners TheMediumPanada said that “The size of food servings in restaurants is 50-100% bigger than in Europe.”
They're surprised by the number of drive-thru establishments Outofplaceandstrange was surprised by the number of drive-thru establishments the US features. Others agreed, citing drive-thru liquor stores, and even drive-thru Daiquiri stands in Louisiana. In general, foreigners find it weird how Americans seem to drive absolutely everywhere, resulting in parking lots the size of small villages.
They don't understand why there are so many ads for lawyers Hn-t mentioned how ubiquitous ads for lawyers are stateside. According to the Redditor, "Most of the time you couldn't go anywhere without seeing any ads for lawyers."

They're terrified by the many ads for prescription drugs Many others added pharmaceutical ads to the list. According to crunchymush, “Sitting in our hotel room in Vegas and listening to the horrendous lists of possible side-effects for drugs made me wonder how anyone can bring themselves to take them. Lunesta is terrifying. I don't remember the specific ‘possible side-effects,’ but I just recall the fact that ‘death’ wasn't the most troubling one.”

British user BloatedBaryonyx said “I see American houses on TV and am amazed by how they have all these massive detached houses. I thought the people living there were rich or something, but I eventually picked up enough context to know that this was a standard suburban house.”
Visitors are awed by the country’s sheer size “It took me a while before I realized that a person cannot drive from New York City to
the Grand Canyon in one day,” wrote Toykolunchboxes.
They also think cars are really big Crunchymush recounts renting a Ford Taurus, "which by Australian standards would be a ‘family sedan,’ but I felt like I was driving a go-kart. Everywhere I looked there were massive pick-ups with dual rearaxles. I'd look out my side windows half the time and all I could see was hub caps."

Several offering rides back to their hotel." TheRider1 describes Americans as having a "lack of inhibition with strangers," while others highlighted how often Americans "smiled at strangers." In general, foreigners seem perplexed at how open and comfortable Americans are with complete strangers. The gap between toilet stalls’ doors is disconcerting to visitors Bedsheetsforsale is American, but only realized how exposed American toilet stalls leaves users when traveling to Europe. "I remember being in England, and seriously every bathroom stall was sectioned off with a full door and everything. Seriously, the gaps in between American stalls are horrible and I always think someone is watching me."
Foreigners don't understand taxes, and why the price listed on an item isn't the price expected at the cash register Foreigners complain about how the price tag on an item changes once you get to the cash register. Ahphoque says “Price tag says $5, you take a $5 bill out of your wallet, then bam, you're asked to pay $5.86 or whatever.”

By signing off with IATA, Canada, COTHM has become the rst and the only IATA-Authorized Training Center (ATC) spreading its educational wings across Pakistan. T h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l A i r Tr a n s p o r t A s s o c i a t i o n ( I ATA ) i s t h e t r a d e association for the world’s airlines, representing some 275 airlines or 83% of total air trafc. In view of the increasing air travel and ight operations in Pakistan, there is a huge emerging demand for the professionally-qualied and skilled work force in the travel, tourism and airline sector. COTHM has established a fully-equipped and personalized professional training facility as per IATA standards to implement the IATA training programs. In a serene ceremony, the IATA training and qualications were launched. Mr. Kazi M. Mashkoor (Sr. Analyst, IATA Pakistan) graced the launch ceremony as the Chief Guest. Mr. Saman Ratnayake, Area Manager SriLankan Airlines, Lahore, attended the ceremony as the guest of honor. They expressed their optimism about the growth and development of the airlines industry in Pakistan.
The ceremony was attended by the leading professionals from the Travel, Tourism and Airline Industry. Mr. Ahmad Shaq, CEO of COTHM Pakistan & Dubai, said that with the collaboration of IATA, we will train hundreds of aviation professionals each year with a commitment to developing careers and a workforce that makes our industry safe, secure, and sustainable. Through IATA training and qualications it is possible to share understanding of best practices, international standards, and industry regulations, which ensures to address real workplace challenges. 8 TRICKS FOR SAVING MONEY AT EXPENSIVE RESTAURANTS

t’s never fun to go out to a nice meal and feel by the end like you got ripped off. Which is why it’s important to go into any restaurant, whether it’s fast food or haute French dining, with some education about what you’re getting and what you should be getting. We talked to Mark Pastore, president of N e w Yo r k C i t y ’s acclaimed meat purveyor Pat LaFrieda — which works with h i g h - e n d establishments including The Spotted Pig and Minetta Tavern — about how to look for value when you go out to eat. Pastore knows of what he speaks: He says he eats out four to five days a week. Next time you’re ordering at a restaurant, keep these tips in mind.
1. It pays to be vegetarian. “There’s really no cheap meat” in the United States, Pastore says, as long as it’s quality product. So if you’ve been thinking about removing animals from your diet, it certainly won’t hurt your wallet.
2. But not every type of meat is created equal. At least in terms of cost, there is a clear order. “Poultry is always going to the be the cheapest,” Pastore says. From there it goes: pork, beef, veal, and then lamb, which is the “most expensive.” So load up on duck and pork chops.
3. Forget about any unusual meats. “Once you delve into the wild game market, it’s all very expensive, because there aren’t many people raising the animals,” Pastore says. “A whole rabbit would sell for close to $7 a pound fresh on the street. A whole chicken goes for about $1.25 a pound.” Elk and bison are delicious, but know you’re paying a serious premium for them.

4. Steak isn’t as expensive as you think it is. At least, if you know what cut you’re getting. Prime beef, the highest-grade option (or as Pastore calls it, “the Rolls-Royce” of steaks), has gotten “very expensive” this year thanks to supply and demand. But look out for “lunchtime cuts” that can be amazing in the hands of a talented chef, even when it’s not lunch: flat-iron steaks, skirt steaks, hanger steaks, and flank steaks.
5. Try lunch instead of dinner. “Lunch menus will always be more inexpensive than dinner,” Pastore says. The same dishes will go for less, and restaurants are more likely to feature budget-conscious items in the middle of the day.
6. Seek out the neighborhood standby. Restaurants that specialize in one thing come with an added cost. “If you want a great steak and you want a steakhouse experience, you go to one of the classic steakhouses, and you’re prepared to pay those prices,” Pastore says. But New American-style restaurants, especially ones full of locals, offer a wide variety of dishes at different price points.

8. But don’t be afraid of the prix fixe menu. A number of great, normally expensive restaurants offer fixed-price menus, whether every night or only at certain times. They limit what you can experience, but they also tend to highlight signature dishes at a discount. “They’re generally a great deal,” Pastore says. The best news? There’s never been a more affordable time to eat out. Across the board, restaurants have gotten more casual while paying more attention than ever to ingredients — which means great food at a better price. “We’ve gone from a lot of white tablecloths to a lot of wooden tables that we sit at, and people enjoy a more communal style of eating,” Pastore says.

The Australian city of Melbourne has taken rst place for the world’s most livable city for the seventh year in a row as part of The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Report for 2017.
T
he report gives cities around the world a livability scores based on 30 different factors that fall into ve broad categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. A total of 140 cities are surveyed, with scores being weighted on a scale of 1 to 100, with one being considered intolerable living conditions while 100 is considered the ideal. Each of the broad categories has various subsections to it. For stability, factors include the prevalence of petty and violent crimes and threats of terror, while culture and environment is weighed on factors that include average temperatures, levels of censorship, and social or religious restrictions. Many of this year’s top 10 most livable cities hail from Australia and Canada. Issues of civil unrest and violence from terrorism has left cities like Damascus, in Syria, and Tripoli, in Libya, as two of the 10 least livable cities in the world this year. Whether you're traveling the globe in search of paradise or are considering life as an expat, these 10 cities around the globe are where you can expect to nd the highest quality of life.

4. Toronto, Canada Considered the No.1 most livable city on Earth this year, Melbourne earned an overall score of 97.5, with perfect 100s in three categories: education, infrastructure, and healthcare. Melbourne has a stability score of 95 and a culture and environment score of 95.1.

Toronto came in at fourth place this year, with an overall rating of 97.2. Its healthcare, stability, and education scores were all perfect 100's. Toronto's infrastructure score was 96.4, while its culture and environment score was 89.1.

Only 0.1 percentage points separated Vienna from this year's top city. Vienna's overall score was 97.4. This Austrian city has a stability score of 95, while its healthcare, education, and infrastructure scores are all 100. Vienna's culture and environment score was 94.4.

Finland has a density that ranges between 15 and 18 people per square kilometer of land, which is quite small in comparison to the global land average of 57 people per square kilometer. Helsinki earned an overall score of 95.6, with stability and healthcare scores of 100, an infrastructure score of 96.4, an education score of 91.7, and a culture and environment score of 88.7.

If you're really lucky, you might win free Starbucks for life, like one lucky lady in Kansas did earlier this year.

But if you want to take matters into your own hand, you can follow in the footsteps of one horrible Starbucks customer who used this so-called hack to get free Starbucks that's actually more of a dick move than anything else. As Brad Halsey, a Starbucks barista, wrote in an email to J e z e b e l ' s Kitchenette, one customer at his store, "purchased 365 Starbucks cards and registered every one of them online with a different birthday so that he gets a 'free birthday drink' EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR." That means that every single day, this customer walks into Starbucks and orders a free "birthday" drink.
Halsey, at this point, is wise to this man's trick to get free Starbucks, and yet, the customer continues to maintain that it's a fluke in the Starbucks app. "Even though I know exactly how he 'beat the system' there, he pretends that his app is just malfunctioning and it magically gives him the same free birthday drink every day," Halsey complains, adding, "If he was a nice guy, I might not be so irritated." Apparently this customer is a total brat who insists on writing his own order on the cup in black marker. And it's complicated: He draws lines and arrows and writes all over the cup while telling me: 'Two pumps of white mocha here, then add five pumps of vanilla. That should take us to this line here where you’re gonna add cold heavy cream up to this ridge here...it should be halfway between this line and this line. Make sure to add the heavy whipping cream before the espresso, it changes the taste if you do it out of order. Then add your four shots, three regular and one long shot. That long shot is important, since you guys reformulated your machines, it’s been Hell trying to get my drink right. That long shot helps balance it. Then stir it for me, Mister Brad. Now do me a favor and add ice to the top there and it’ll be easy as pie. I’m not picky so don’t worry about shaking it or anything like that.' Then, this customer doesn't even pay the proper amount for this extra complicated drink because of the "app malfunction.” So sure, you could absolutely buy 365 different Starbucks cards (366, if you're factoring in a leap year) and register each of them with a different birthday. It's kind of an ingenious hack, when you think about it. But chances are good that your barista will start hating you if you come in every single day claiming it's your birthday. Plus, it's definitely unethical. So be a good customer, and just take your free drink on your actual birthday, OK? And always remember to tip your barista.

Since the Rio Earth Summit held in 1992, there has been a steady increase in the awareness around the world for the need to consider environmental and cultural issues in the Travel & Tourism industry and not simply its economic returns. There has been growing recognition that those who pro t from tourism are not always those who have to bear its costs.

ustainable tourism refers to a broad range of tourism ventures that take into account ideas of sustainable development. Importantly, sustainable tourism development is supply driven rather than demand driven with consideration given to social, economic and environmental factors. It is planned within the carrying capacity of an area – both ecologically and culturally – and control of the development remains within the community as much of the economic benets as possible. The United Nations 70th General Assembly has already designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. This has created a unique opportunity to raise awareness of the contribution of sustainable tourism to development among public and private sector decision-makers and the public, while mobilizing all stakeholders to work together in making tourism a catalyst for positive change. In the context of the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the International Year aims to support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behavior towards a more sustainable tourism sector that can contribute to the SDGs.

HOW TO LOOK AND FEEL HEALTHIER IN ONE WEEK Didn't hit your fitness and diet goals in time for summer? Don't fret.

here are still plenty of things you can start doing now to look and feel healthier.

You're probably not going to wake up looking like an underwear model tomorrow — but you can certainly start feeling better and improving your digestion in a week, according to registered dietitian and nutritionist Andy Bellatti. Here are a few things Bellatti and other nutritionists recommend. Water is essential — it regulates the shape of every cell inside our bodies. If we don't get enough, in fact, these cells begin to shrivel up. The CDC recommends choosing water instead of sugarsweetened beverages to "help with weight management." Swapping a cold glass of H2O for a single 20-ounce soda will save you about 240 calories. So hydrate, Bellatti told Business Insider, "ideally with water."
DON'T: Go on a juice cleanse. If you're considering a "detox" or "juice cleanse," you might want to reconsider. Drinking just water, juice, or any other liquefied concoction for more than a few days can set you up for unhealthy eating behaviors, and can often lead to spikes and drops in blood sugar levels, which can spawn cravings and mood swings. "This is a recipe for ‘hangriness,'" Bellatti said, "that also inaccurately paints all solid food as problematic."
DO: Cut back on sodium. Most of us — 89% of US adults, according to the CDC — eat too much sodium, and that's not including any salt added at the table. Too much salt in your diet can cause puffiness and bloating, so cutting back can help you avoid that. MONTHLY HOSPITALITY PLUS
"Sodium retains water," Bellatti said, "so lowering sodium intake also reduces puffiness."
DON'T: Start banning foods. There's a difference between cutting back on things you eat in excess and banning certain food groups entirely. Diets that rely on avoiding ingredients (like sugar or
gluten) can lead to replacing those things with other ingredients that play the same role in the body (like honey or corn-based foods). Doing this can be dangerous if the replacement products are nutrientdeficient.
DO: Fill up with fiber. Writer Michael Pollan said it best: "Eat

food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Fresh, high-fiber vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, and brussels sprouts — which the CDC calls "powerhouse foods" — are a great source of key vitamins and nutrients, including fiber, which helps keep you feeling full and satisfied until your next meal. "Whole, plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds) are best," Bellatti said. "One quick way to add extra fiber to your day: sprinkle chia, hemp, or ground flax over whatever you're eating for a boost."
DON'T: Rely on powders and pills. The problem with diet powders and pills, Bellatti says, is that they often take something that was once a whole food, like a fruit or a vegetable, then process it to separate out one ingredient. That's alright for things like cocoa powder, which does have nutrients, but it shouldn't make up the bulk of your dietary intake. "When something is a powder, you're probably using what, a teaspoon or tablespoon at most? And you have to wonder how much that can really do. Versus a cup of broccoli or a quarter cup of cashews. That’s something significant," Bellatti said.
DO: Be mindful of portion sizes. The baseline portion sizes of our snacks and meals have ballooned over the last 40 years — even the plates and cups we serve them on have gotten noticeably bigger. The average size of many of our foods — whether fastfood, sit-down meals, or even items from the grocery store — has grown by as much as 138% since the 1970s, according to data from the American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of Nutrition, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. So be mindful of portion sizes, and if you're eating out, consider taking some of your meal home for later.

DO: Think positive. Thinking positively about eating and feeling better can help motivate some people to stick to a new lifestyle. "In terms of changing the way you eat (it's much more than a 'diet'), focus on the opportunities and what you can eat as opposed to what foods you're trying to cut down on," Dr. Donald Hensrud, who chairs the Mayo Clinic's division of preventive, occupational and aerospace medicine, wrote in a blog post. "There are many wonderful foods and recipes to explore, and believe it or not, we can learn to like new foods."
DON'T: Expect miracles. Let's be real: Eating right for a week isn't going to counteract decades of subsisting on fries and Frappuccinos. But it is enough to reduce some of the more irritating aspects of those symptoms, like the bloating linked with a high-salt diet, and the fatigue associated with blood sugar crashes. "The most that can happen in a week's time is that you make choices that help reduce bloating and puffiness. Any promises beyond that are more about marketing and hyperbole than anything else," said Bellatti. But committing to treating your body well — even if only for a few days — might be enough to lay the foundation for months or years of future healthy eating. If you can prove to yourself that you can treat your body right (and that it feels good to do so) you just might be more likely to keep it up later on.
DON'T: Focus exclusively on calories. Focusing too much on calories can be dangerous, too, since the measurement falsely makes it seem like a calorie of one food is exactly the same as that of another. "This is especially true when eating at restaurants," Bellatti said. "Many low-calorie items are loaded with sodium, which retains water and can leave you feeling bloated." Plus, keep in mind that for sustained weight loss, you're only supposed to lose about 1-3 pounds each week. "That tends to be a lot more sustainable than losing a whole bunch MONTHLY HOSPITALITY PLUS
