Sophia Amoruso and her Nasty Gal The brilliant brainchild of L.A. native Sophia Amoruso, Nasty Gal was created as a go-to resource for funky fashion goods, both vintage and new. Sophia Amoruso was never a stranger to the business of retail, having worked at more than 10 different retail stores by the time she was 22. It was her rebel-like persona that triggered the conceptualization of Nasty Gal in 2006. After moving to San Francisco to study photography, Sophia started re-selling vintage clothing bought at thrift stores and estate sales on her eBay store which she ran out of her step-aunt’s garage. Her inspiration for the name of her store came from the funk song “Nasty Gal” by Betty Davis, 1970’s rocker and former wife of Miles Davis. Using her friends as models, Amoruso utilized her photography skills and styling capabilities to create product images which she featured on her eBay auctions as well as her MySpace page. It wasn’t long before her business outgrew the garage and she had to upgrade her workspace. During the good old eBay days, one of Sophia’s most notable sales was a -MORE-
Sophia Amoruso and her Nasty Gal/page 2 neon-checkered boy’s sweater purchased at a thrift shop which she resold for $550. After a year and a half selling on eBay, Nasty Gal had brought in $115,000 in sales, generating a $20,000 net profit. Deciding to purchase her own web domain, nastygal.com, Sophia started directing eBay customers to her newly launched retail website. Sophia swapped out eBay and MySpace for her own web store and Facebook. Her web traffic relied solely on social media as a means of advertising, and still does to this day. Nasty Gal’s marketing tactics may seem unconventional, however they work efficiently for her target demographic of young twenty-something’s. Impeccable timing and a few blessings in disguise may have only slightly contributed to the highly-motivated self-driven business woman that Sophia Amoruso is today. Coining the phrase “Nasty Gals do it better”, the company has gained immense popularity with young women worldwide. -###-

Nasty Gal is a global online destination for fashion-forward, free-thinking girls. In 2006, founder Sophia Amoruso started an eBay store selling a highly curated selection of vintage pieces out of her step-aunt’s garage. In just five years, the shop has grown to become an international style source offering both new and vintage clothing, shoes, and accessories. The name of the company was inspired by the song and album “Nasty Gal” by Betty Davis. Nasty Gal founder Sophia was featured on the cover of the January 2013 issue of Entrepreneur magazine, named as a “woman to watch”. The company received $40 million in funding from Index Ventures, the same investors of Skype, Dropbox, and Blue Bottle Coffee. In 2012, Nasty Gal had international sales of $128 million, which was four times higher than the year before. The company currently has over 583,000 likes on Facebook, 420,000 Instagram followers, and 68,000 twitter followers. NastyGal.com generates over 2 million monthly unique visitors each month. The company now operates out of a 10,000 square foot building in downtown Los Angeles. Nasty Gal opened a 500,000 square foot warehouse in Louisville, Ky. during the fall of 2012 to keep up with product demand. The brand launched its debut collection of its in house label in 2012. -###-
