Welcome

Welcome to summer – not that we’d know it with this continuous washout…

The end of June was an extraordinary time for Britain; leaving Europe in the Referendum and England being knocked out of the football (though was that surprising?). Gloucestershire was split with their vote of whether to Leave or Remain with Tewkesbury, Gloucester and Forest of Dean choosing to Leave and The Cotswolds, Cheltenham and Stroud opting to Remain. While the current political instability still hangs over us, our financial analyst, Guy Shone from Explain The Market has written a study of the immediate, economic impact and it’s not all doom and gloom!

In this July edition we are celebrating summer in the Cotswolds.

Schools break up and for the many who may not be going away there is a wealth of opportunities for a holiday at home, right here on our doorstep. Our detailed article compiled by Cotswold Tourism showcases all the attractions on offer and a listing of events one can attend through the region.

For those who are wanting to head to the coast, Mrs & Mr Jones have been exploring in Devon. They spent a wonderful time at the South Sands Hotel in Salcombe, which is the perfect holiday destination for the whole family, including the dog!

From a foodie side we have been in gastronomic heaven. Food Writer Rachel Cappuccini spent a day with the Cotswolds’ most famous Michelin star chef, David Everitt-Matthias at his restaurant in Cheltenham, Le Champignon Sauvage. While I was lucky to spend a morning chatting to Masterchef: The Professionals 2015 winner, Mark Stinchcombe and his wife Sue at their restaurant based at Eckington Manor near Pershore.

Cotswold Style attended the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo and The Jerudong Park Trophy recently, where Royalty and many household names were participating. This month’s front cover has Prince William playing Polo, along with his cousin Zara Phillips and former Olympian Victoria Pendleton.

Let’s hope we have a gloriously, sunny July and are able to watch an uninterrupted fortnight of Wimbledon, cricket at the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival, The Open golf and start getting ready for some British success at the Olympics!

MARK & SUE STINCHCOMBE Emma Logan met with Masterchef: The Professionals 2015 winner, Mark Stinchcombe and his wife Sue, who are the Head Chefs at Eckington Manor near Pershore The backbone to any superior, culinary kitchen is where the ‘lackey’ has to start.

The individuals who slave for 18 hour days, often in conditions which most mere mortals would find unbearable, with little regard to viewing daylight, sweating over steaming pots, tirelessly chopping an endless array of produce and then at the end the day scrubbing it all down; all in the quest of satisfying the hunger and taste buds of an ever-increasingly, sophisticated market of diners all of whom are competing to have eaten the best thing yet. It’s a tough industry!

To discover you want to become a chef has to be a vocation and with this I don’t mean the ‘chef ’ who pulls the packaging off some ready-made concoction and bungs it in the oven to feed 100 at the local carvery. A real chef, a proper chef of the epicurean variety is a different breed altogether.

Mark and Sue Stinchcombe are like a pair of highly prized, rare breeds. They happen to be newly married and work together as a formidable, young duo who are destined to be amongst the most recognised chefs in the country through their gastronomic quest.

Television has made stars of them both but it isn’t all down to the recognition of appearing on our screens that has done this, it’s the fact that they are the future generation of cookery artisans who are reaching into the periphery to give us the most creative and best food they can devise.

Mark and Sue grew up around the Cotswolds’ honey coloured boarders.

He is was born in Bath and she in Pershore and after years of learning their artisan skills whether it was in London, Cheltenham or Australia they have returned to Sue’s home area and are now Head Chefs of the beautiful Eckington Manor between Bredon and Pershore.

Mark had what he calls a ‘fairytale’ introduction to cooking. He loved his Home Economics classes at school conducted by an inspirational teacher and when having his careers chat, it was recommended that he work for a hotel in Bath which had a Michelin star and three Rosettes. He said, “I went for a week and fell in love with the atmosphere, the smells, the camaraderie.

Everyone was what felt a lot older than me at 23 and 24; I was 16 and looked up to these people – you want to be with the older ones and be a part of it all. So

I left school with just my GCSE’s and didn’t go to college and threw myself in the deep end at the hotel.”

Sue meanwhile led a more military style of learning and likes order. She found her mother’s cooking stimulating and her father was passionate about his allotment ensuring their food at home all came from the ground. She says, “I was lucky, my mother gave me a lot of free reign and we made so much food together which ignited my passion. I knew full well I wanted to go to college and this is where Mark and I differ, as I can sing the praises of further education whilst Mark accolades the apprenticeship scheme. Both have pros and cons but I loved my time at college with old-school but amazing tutors, the style of which I flourish under and which led to my first job in quite an authoritative kitchen which was perfect for me.”

Three and a half years later and unbeknown to each other they met while working at Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham, headed up by David Everritt-Matthias, who has held two coveted Michelin stars for over twenty years. “David is the founder of foraging food in Britain,” said Mark and they couldn’t praise David’s wife Helen enough, whom they both think is ‘phenomenal’.

“We get to work together which we absolutely love – this is a hard dream we are both going for, we are trying to do something different here. We don’t argue because we both have the same goal and we are very blessed.” headed off to Melbourne to work with Ben Shewry at Attica, the only restaurant in Australia to have made the world’s top 50. Sue says, “When I spoke to Mark on the phone I knew something had changed in him working there - he had fire in his belly and he was ignited.” Mark says, “Ben is astonishing – he has an enormous personality and huge business sense and regardless of the fact there were twelve of us sharing three bedrooms; this was probably my favourite place I have ever worked. What I admire about Ben is that now he has achieved it all, he religiously takes Wednesday nights and Saturday lunchtimes off, to coach his children’s basketball teams before coming back to service. I’ve never seen chefs before, say ‘this is what I have created and my family have suffered so I am doing something to give back to them.’ There’s not a lot of chefs in Britain who stand up and say ‘my family deserves more’.”

Mark continued, “There’s a lot of stigma about money within the restaurant industry where people will lament a chef for driving a nice car, so he must be charging too much - but what these people forget, is it takes 17 hour days to get to this point, so why shouldn’t they be able to reap the benefits?”

Sue eventually joined Mark in Sydney and the day she arrived, he proposed to her. They then spent what they say is the happiest time of their lives to date, travelling around New Zealand and Thailand for 8 months, eating out all the time on a culinary journey in the wild.

On returning to the UK 18 months ago, they commenced their job at Eckington Manor and it was then that the massive whirlwind started. Mark had entered Masterchef: The Professionals, which was filmed in May and June of last year and their wedding in the grounds of Eckington followed in October. They admitted like any couple getting married, it was a busy and full-on 14 JULY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

day but thankfully for Sue, not cooked by them. She laughed, “Mark would have had me in my wedding dress and apron but I put my foot down and luckily Andy Waters (the prominent Birmingham based chef), was able to cook for us and we ate in a marquee overlooking the surrounding, beautiful hills.”

All this colossal activity was continuing while also running the restaurant and cookery school. Sue says, “Our style of cooking and how we want to run the restaurant mirrors the image of Judy Garner, who owns Eckington Manor. Our ethos is reflected in the rooms which have been renovated and now between us all, we are producing the absolute best.”

The owner Judy is a dynamic woman in her own right, who founded Garner’s Foods, which specialised in quality pickles and dressings. She perfected all of the recipes herself, building a brand through the 90s which became synonymous with ‘the best’ amongst retailers and consumers alike before selling her business to Baxters. Mark and Sue said, “It’s like a chefs dream working here at Eckington Manor; we have access to all the fresh food that is produced on the farm’s land and this includes the heralded lamb, pork and beef we rear as well as having our own allotment for vegetables and orchards for fruit. Everything is traceable and we utilise all the ingredients grown, straight into our cooking.”

Mark’s rise to fame came last

Christmas when he was crowned champion of Masterchef: The Professionals 2015. Sue said, “The programme was aired on Christmas Eve so it was all a bit strange. Mark had had to sign a confidentiality agreement that he couldn’t tell anyone the outcome beforehand and of course being Christmas Eve, not a lot of people watch television. We weren’t working over Christmas and had gone to Mark’s mothers.

“After the announcement of Mark’s win, the Eckington Manor website crashed and the phones were relentless – we even had to take on another receptionist just to answer the calls. We had 170 individual, new bookings between Christmas Eve and 27th December!

“Consequently things have been so manic with the restaurant, we were only able to celebrate the win a week ago when Judy threw a party for all the staff and our family and close friends here at Eckington. We had a marquee and we didn’t even have to cook the food ourselves! It was the first time since Mark won that we were all able to get together which made it the most lovely of Sundays. Everyone here deserves the pat on the back for Mark’s win. When he was away in London the whole team rallied around filling the void and helping with the preparation for the show, as well as assisting me with the running of the restaurant.”

Sue herself has enjoyed her own taste of fame and has appeared on programmes such as Hairy Bikers, Britain’s Best Dish and Great British Menu. She and Mark both love competitions so competing in Masterchef: The Professionals was Mark’s turn for some potential glory.

“Becoming accepted to appear as a contestant isn’t just about being a great cook,” Mark said. “First I had to apply online detailing the kind of food I like to make and after phone calls checking my credibility, I was screen tested to ensure I

looked right for television, whether I could talk and was I passionate enough – there wasn’t any cooking involved so noone really had any idea whether I actually could!”

The ‘Skills Test’ is the first participation of cooking that the chefs actually do on Masterchef. Though we, as the viewer, are shown an hour’s programme, each of these takes up a full day in London. Mark continued, “For your own dishes you submit your recipe two weeks in advance along with your lists of ingredients with a detailed method and equipment list. You need to be methodical in writing it all down and then you still have a restaurant to run and are continuing to practice your dishes.

“I wasn’t nervous. I knew what I wanted to do and my food speaks for itself – it’s more whether they liked it or not. One becomes anxious ensuring you have your timings right and the food is consistently perfect, which is the toughest part of our job.

“The hard bit was when I got back from London and I had a wedding

tasting or cookery demonstration in our cooking school and then a full dinner to cook for the restaurant. In fact doing Masterchef was quite cathartic!”

Obviously the Michelin star dream would now be the crowning glory in their lives but as Sue says, “If it comes it comes; that’s what all chefs aim towards and we have both worked so hard all of our lives. Mark has worked in Michelin star restaurants for 8 years of his life so it is obviously something one aspires to, as everybody wants that gratification at the end of the day and you don’t produce the style and level of food that we do, without hopefully one day it being recognised.” There can be a flip side to all this recognition though, the couple shares a massive respect for the people who live in the village of Eckington and would never want to antagonize them by not being able to offer them tables due to their popularity, especially when the village has supported them so much.

They translate their knowledge into the cookery school which runs throughout the year at Eckington Manor

and with which both Mark and Sue are passionate about. We say to our guests, “We’re chefs, we have been doing this and the skills we have learnt, for many years but we are also normal people and on our days off, we want good food, we want it quick and with little washing up.

So we put these together with all the tips we have learnt along the way plus what we like to do at home.”

Mark continued, “We’re not aiming for people to cook our kind of food as that is why they come here to us for that special occasion and they’d take our jobs if we taught them too much! It’s about home style cooking that is achievable and we teach total nervous beginners to incredibly talented, amateur chefs.”

Mark finishes by saying, “Yes, the phones have been ringing off the hook since I won Masterchef but we have something very unique where we are.

We get to work together which we absolutely love – this is a hard dream we are both going for, we are trying to do something different here. We don’t argue because we both have the same goal and we are very blessed.”

Make Waves…

Don’t go with the Flow!

Clive Burling has been experimenting again love to try new things as well as finding new ways to do old things.

It’s a great philosophy for life by the way, not just for interiors! I am always experimenting with different finishes, trying new paints and, as you know, mixing things up a bit. Each piece I work on is different and has it’s own ‘personality’.

I would never be happy doing the same thing day after day and I really enjoy working with clients who are prepared to push the boundaries. A recent example is a large rustic armoire (pictured). To say that the final result ‘evolved’ from the original brief would be an understatement! It was probably

made in the late 18th century and had been painted white many years ago. I was asked to re-create a look seen on a different piece of furniture. When it was completed, however, that finish simply didn’t look right. I therefore reworked it, having been given a free hand by a very understanding client. The level of distressing really reflects the age of the piece and it is now one of her favourites.

Mine too.

The advertising industry strive to convince us that their product is so different from the competition and you will stand out from the crowd and be an ‘individual’ if you purchase the latest whatever it is they are selling. The truth is we all want to be different; we want to impose our personality in our daily lives, whether it’s the car we drive, the clothes we wear, our gardens or our interior furnishings.

made or off the rack, the difference is usually decided by budget. With interiors it doesn’t always have to be that way.

Rescuing unloved and unwanted ‘brown’ furniture and giving it a new look and another life has been the name of the game over the past few years.

However, to pinch a lyric from my youth ‘the times they are a changin’! Those lovely old pieces of furniture are getting harder to find, the ‘painted look’ has hit the mainstream and is now, it seems, available almost everywhere. The quality of available pieces can, to say the least, vary enormously.

In my article in February looking ahead to trends this year I included a prediction from Daniel Hopwood, president of the British Institute of Interior Design; “The recent up-cycling craze is about to become more sophisticated. This year is about taking the shop bought product and customising it to add character and personality or finding the craftsmen or artist to create the bespoke.”

My latest commission illustrates this prediction very well. My same client mentioned to me earlier this year to expect two pieces she was having made and a few weeks ago two semi circular cupboards with drawers arrived, designed to stand together and create a circular unit in the centre of a dressing room.

They had been designed and made by

‘Scumble Goosie’ a local company who, in my opinion, owe their success to staying ahead of the game. They supply a huge range of furniture and accessories in many styles, based on 18th and 19th century originals including Georgian, Empire, Country and French.

Even better, it can be bought ‘raw’ or painted, which gives clients the option to either keep the bare wood or put on their own finish. Perfect! Most pieces are made from mango wood, which has a lovely grain, so my plan was to create a slightly metallic ‘washed’ look for the doors and drawers so the grain would still be visible and provide contrast by painting the ‘frame’ with a solid colour.

Rather than do ‘mood boards’ I painted a miniature chest of drawers with some suggested colours and finishes, a mix of metallic and china clay paints and silver gilt. This really helped my client visualise the finished result and a decision was made very quickly! The finished pieces will be topped off with a circular mirror and placed in the centre of the dressing room under a low hanging chandelier. They are beautiful and a great use of space and sit well with both the rustic armoire and the other more contemporary pieces in the room.

So my advice this month; get out there and make waves, be different and don’t, whatever you do, go with the flow!

New Blinds, Cheltenham Q&A with Nicki Cook who owns New Blinds a Cheltenham based company that specialises in all types of bespoke window furnishings Please tell us a bit more about your company, New Blinds and your background experience?

With my partner Tim, I have been involved with the trade for over 20 years and together we have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the blind and awning industry.

Our aim is to provide a personal service to all of our customers from start to finish. The showroom appointments we offer, allow our customers to look at all of the products available in a relaxed environment with one-to-one service and plenty of time to ask any questions and advice one might need.

I look after most of the sales whereas Tim’s role is the technical and survey side of the business.

What types of blinds do you offer?

We offer every type of blind on the market that customers are aware of and many more that most people have not seen before. We also sell Shutters, Awnings, Curtains and Wallpaper.

We use well known suppliers such as: Luxaflex, Markilux, Creation Baumann, Shade Haus, Weinor, Silent Gliss, Prestigious Textiles, Romo, Voyage and Vanessa Arbuthnott.

New Blinds has the largest indoor showroom by appointment only in Gloucestershire.

How has the style of blinds changed over the past five years?

Blinds have changed a lot over the last few years and because of the child safety law coming in, we sell a lot of cordless, wireless and electric blinds now.

What do you see as the next trend for window furnishings?

I see the trend going more towards these wireless, electric and home automation systems as customers are becoming more aware of the options available to them.

What are the benefits to having blinds instead of curtains?

We sell and fit an enormous amount of shutters and they can be fitted on most window styles; we can also fit them onto shaped windows. One of our main suppliers, manufacture a shutter in Birmingham which means a delivery time of approximately 4 weeks compared to most, where you have a delivery time of 8-10 weeks. It also carries a 10-year guarantee compared to others that are 3 years, so this shutter is probably the most popular with our customers at the moment.

Please give us some details of projects you have recently completed?

Recently we have been getting quite a number of jobs where customers are having a mixture of blinds and curtains, as in some rooms they want it to have a

cosier, softer feel so they will curtain these rooms to create this. A number of customers want day and night curtains, so we are fitting 2 x curtain rails and 2 x curtains onto a window. We have a lot of awnings on order at the moment and have fitted a number recently. Over Glass Awnings (over conservatories) are becoming increasingly more popular to help keep out the heat.

We offer a no obligation Showroom and Home appointments, full survey and fitting service.

Do you also work in other markets such as commercial properties?

We work in the domestic and commercial market and are happy to do jobs of all sizes and to suit all budgets.

This month, she takes us through the rather grand RHS garden show gate. elcome to The RHS Shows: the Botticelli of botany, the Pavarotti of plants – the best of the best and a chance to view all that is fashionable and respected for gardeners across the country.

I’m very honoured to be able to view the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on the Monday and this year did not disappoint.

Of all the Main Avenue Show Gardens, it was Cleve West’s planting that I really loved – here is a man at the top of his game who this year presented a very personal garden paying homage to Exmoor, a place close to his heart. The frothy blues and whites lining the path summoned up a Somerset summer’s day with Gloucestershire featuring too with stones used from The Forest of Dean helping to secure this work of art with a gold medal.

fashion to add a dash of orange or yellow amongst blues, purples and pinks.

Geums seem still to be one of the plants of choice. Arid planting is also popular with bronzes and sweeping grasses among sandy paths and rocks – it was in fact this look in The Telegraph Garden that was voted Best In Show and helped the Winton Beauty of Mathematics Garden achieve silver.

Press Day is as much about the people as the plants and smiles are raised in every walkway as you bump into yet another familiar nurseryman or presenter or television production team, all enthused and keen to share thoughts on the planting or the design of floral jacket passing by. In front of the Royal Hospital, blooms of a different kind were blossoming: thousands of crochets poppies to commemorate soldiers from Australia and New Zealand who died during WW1, were certainly eye catching, the patience and time taken to create these akin to a gardener’s dedication to his craft.

Of course it’s not just gardens and plants, furniture, fabrics and fragrance are just some of the other delights on offer when the RHS comes to town.

Heyland and Whittle provide all the soaps and lotions which accompany you on your visit to the on-site facilities, a clever bit of marketing as I challenge anyone to come out wafted in citrus or rose scent and not head to their stand! A fun new introduction for dramatists amongst you is their ’To Beard or not to Beard’ soap bar in a book.

Burgon & Ball showcased the new ‘Poc-kit’, a finalist in the RHS Chelsea Garden Product of the Year 2016 – a most handy adjustable belt with pockets to fit secateurs, pen and mobile phone amongst other items – everything you would want in the garden – although if you’re like me, you’ll definitely be turning your mobile to

silent to prevent disturbance!

As I reached the end of my day, Pepe of Evesham’s double sunbed looked like required rockable recharging ahead of my return journey.

Of course, Chelsea is over, but we are spoiled by the RHS with Hampton Court and Tatton Park still to come this month.

Hampton Court this year opens on the 5th July and highlights include a butterfly dome with thousands of tropical butterflies, a 6,750 square metre Floral Marquee and Plant Village and a Festival of Roses Marquee inspired by Beatrix Potter’s garden. I particularly loved the Yardley Garden last year – so soft, so traditional, so My Fair Lady. Hope to see more like this!

I’ve never been to Tatton Park so maybe 2016 will be my year – if so, I’ll be sure to report back.

With smash hits including ‘Dream Catch Me’ and ‘Teardrop’, Newton has been hailed as the UK’s answer to American surf-dude Jack Johnson. Where in the world would you choose to be castaway to and why?

The Galapagos islands or perhaps the Scottish Highlands. I’m pretty happy wherever I am, as long as there’s a guitar kicking around. I’m not built for hot, desert island life though – too ginger!

You can take the entire works of one musician. Who will it be and why?

Randy Newman. His songs and film scores cover all bases. Everything from ‘I Think It’s Going to Rain Today’ and the score from Seabiscuit, to ‘You Got a Friend in Me’ from Toy Story – ultimate classics!

I’d need something for protection while on The Galapagos Islands, so would choose a Silver Back Gorilla. Good for sorting out a sticky situation and hugs too I’d imagine.

What animal or pet would you take?

Name one possession you would take and one to leave behind for a loved one?

I’d take my guitar to pass the time writing music and I’d leave behind the PS4 for my brother so he could immerse himself in the games to avoid missing me.

Another guitar! That’s a great idea, you can never have too many guitars. It’s not like I need a hairbrush anyway.

What would be your luxury item?

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. It’s great to listen to, as well as watch. Bill Murray – what a legend!

What movie would you take?

What would be your last supper before departing for your desert island?

Really good Sushi please, with brown rice… and Banoffee Pie for pudding.

You can take one celebrity companion, dead or alive. Who will it be?

Sammy Davis Jr. We would chat into the small hours and have a proper jam session. It would be a blast.

Biggest memory item and what’s the story behind it?

I’ve got a plastic sword that was handed to me by a girl in the front row at Beautiful Days Festival. I held it up, let out a war cry and the massive crowd went completely mental. It’s currently on top of the air conditioning unit in the studio.

Teleportation! Touring would be much easier, with much less time travelling. I could get so much done. I could even write a book.

Cotswoldia Angela Chancellor’s is getting smooth for the summer urrah! The sun is shining, at least occasionally and so far we have been blessed with better weather than last year. Some early good sunshine has fortuitously resulted in focusing my attentions on the presummer holiday primping and preening in a more timely fashion, unlike the usual last minute panic preparations of a quick groom and a last minute spay tan before putting ones mottled and sadly increasingly dimpled limbs on display.

The annual struggle to get summer ready seems to become more elaborate and arduous in direct correlation to getting busier and poorer on time, so for this month’s column I am going to put my India Knight hat on and explore some beauty time-saving 'devices' I have discovered along the way. Having recently discovered shellac for nails, goodbye hours of enduring inactivity while the blasted traditional polish dries, a nigh on impossible task for me, inevitably resulting in a mess and often having to repeat the hated procedure a second time driving me to the brink of insanity. I have now decided to see if I can find a similar magic wand for my dreaded summer hair.

No matter what the mirror tells us, in our minds we still dream of looking like the Disney princesses we grew up with, not helped by an endless bombardment of images of models and celebrities flaunting

their glossiness at us from any conceivable outlet capable of sending us an image.

These are made even more demeaning by the now ubiquitous selfie, implying an unmade-up naturalness we all know is a complete con but which our subconscious still cruelly serves up when we are having an ugly day. So in the quest to be more effortlessly glossy but without the hours in hair and make-up that a Kim Kardashian can devote in her obsession to be the fairest of us all and show us at any given opportunity, I decided to take the plunge and try a Keratin hair smoothing treatment in the hope it would free me of the tiresome hairdryer, at least for the summer.

Follicly speaking, I have always been more of a Merida than any of her Disney colleagues. Now many of us are huge fans of Merida, so much so, that when a 'glammed up' version was introduced there was an audible public outcry and it was swiftly removed. Nonetheless, more often than not, left to their own devices, the locks on my head wander dangerously into 70's rock star territory, which is difficult to pull off if you don't happen to be a young Jon Bon Jovi.

So in my quest for effortless or at least less effort hair, I booked myself into Toni & Guy in Cheltenham for a Nanokeratin Smoothing treatment. An initial consultation involving an assessment of my mop and a bit of tentative probing for

what my expectations were, I thankfully received the good news, that indeed yes, I was an ideal candidate for creating a smoother me.

As with most things likely to make a noticeable difference to your appearance, you either have to invest in a bit of pain or time. Thankfully the Nanokeratin treatment does not involve any of the former but you will have to expect a good few hours in the salon, which may or may not be a hardship depending on your point of view but there is the more considerable commitment of not being able to wash your hair for 3 days, nor tie it up, tuck it behind your ears or hold it back with your sunnies, my go to hair management tool for most of the summer, which is harder than it sounds but definitely doable.

Now for the results...the anticipation had been lurking, never far from my thoughts, for 3 days solid and it was like waiting for a set of dreaded exam results but I am pleased to report that the hours spent in the salon on one of the hottest days of the year has definitely paid off. The miracle I was hoping for has occurred and I have much smoother hair - even the dreary drizzle that has allowed me to tear myself into the house to write this column has not fluffed up my hair like some sped-up footage of a mushroom growing on an Attenborough documentary. The cycle is finally broken; no more now you see me, humidity, 10 minutes later you see me with 5x as much hair, yippee! The summer holiday test has yet to commence but I will bore/delight you with a small follow up later in the year.

The next quest will hopefully involve the smoothing of the limbs as the only place for cauliflower is in a dish baked with a nice cheesy sauce and most definitely not trying to hide at the top of my thighs! Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

Cotswolds Culture MEN IN LYCRA Susan Blanchfield has identified the new brand of MAMIL Never let it be said that this column does not address the more intriguing aspects of British life, nor does it ignore rising trends and changes to our gloriously eccentric culture. This month we address the burgeoning phenomena of Lycra; or more specifically, men in Lycra. Not since the 1990’s Reebok step class trend has the figure hugging stretchy stuff been so prevalent…except now it has escaped from the confines of the village hall and the gym and entered into cultural consciousness via Waitrose car parks and public highways. Thanks to Tour de France winners, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, the new demographic that has risen out of our burgeoning cycling culture is the middle class, affluent, man with the Mintel inspired acronym of ‘MAMIL’ or Middle Aged Man in Lycra.

Mamils are easily identified by stretchy uniform attire, specifically characterised by ‘bib’ shorts, a sort of mankini with padding around the nether regions or, as some cycling dissenters rather rudely refer to as; ‘budgie smuggling trunks’. Wearers of such attire make no apology for delving into the joy of Lycra as they claim snug fitting clothing is essential to enhancing the enjoyment of cycling. It won’t snag on equipment, or fill up with air and act like a parachute to slow them down they say, as they cram their spreading midriffs into their slinky spandex - it’s not just a fabric, it’s a state of mind they insist. The snug fit of the Lycra can be problematic however as one hapless cyclist discovered when, following several calls to the police from outraged shoppers; he was arrested wandering around a Manchester M&S with what appeared to be, not one, but two budgies stuffed down his pants. The police later released him without charge.

Aside from sweat inducing, ‘fun’, 60 mile Sunday bikes rides, Mamils are characterised by their propensity to spend unfeasibly large sums of money on

Mamils with small children are also more likely to spend long hours of family time out 'training'.

A new survey by the British Heart Foundation has suggested that the thought of wearing Lycra is enough to put middle-aged people off cycling.

Apparently, a third of the 2,000 professionals it polled, thought that men over the age of 40 should never wear the stretchy stuff. All evidence points to the contrary however, with hundreds taking up the Lycra loving sport each week, as with other Mamils: they ride in a ‘bunch’ which is the official collective noun to describe a group of Mamils…And they are not confining their activities to these shores either. Board an Easy Jet flight bound for the Alps or Mallorca and you will find that stag parties have been replaced by groups of middle-aged men heading out for a rendezvous with

complete strangers to ride in single minded, pursed lipped, unison towards utopia.

So, what's so bad about being a Mamil?

Society may label them faintly ridiculous, with the slighting acronym but nonetheless the air is alive with the sound of sweaty manmade materials rubbing together as male cyclists fill every road, eschewing any notion of sedentary middle age. They may be pottering around the Gloucestershire hills but in their minds they are riding Paris-Roubaix. Or as one enthusiast put it, ‘I own my Mamilhood: I'm a middle-aged man in Lycra – and proud’.

Budgies. Beware.

The Cotswold Gent Is Dipping into Expensive Waters eaders may recall in my last article my observations concerning the competitive stress of mounting a suitable picnic for school events during the course of the summer.

Indeed the apparent desire to focus the attention of ones peers on ones ‘uber lifestyle’ via the medium of fabulous pork pie, quashing smoked salmon and Bolly, combined with Maharajah style accommodations has sent your faithful scribe and his beautiful Memsaab into something of a quandary about where to pitch ourselves in our relative penury.

A decision was therefore taken to consider the matter further whilst enjoying a mini-break on the sundrenched isle of Capri. We arrived by speed boat (quite a glamorous way to travel), after a it's fair to say, deeply underwhelming flight from Gatwick to Naples in the extremely cramped, horrifically uncomfortable, squished section of the aeroplane.

I feel bound to observe at this point that over a period of two and a half hours yours truly was offered 150ml of Diet Coke and a rather desultory chicken sandwich (this is in flight catering apparently these days). Flying has never been so glamorous.

Upon arrival in la piccola marina, the sun had already set and we were whisked the remaining couple of kilometres or so to our hotel where after a delightful late supper we retired to bed and awoke to the beautiful vista of the blue

Our view of the sea - resplendent with its enormous private yachts - suggested that Capri might not be a place to recherché the simple life of a world without Maharajah style picnics. For it is fair to say, Capri is clearly a magnet for some of our fellow earth citizens who in their own special way - it seems are unlikely to have ever encountered a pork pie, a tent of any description, or indeed the squished section of a public aeroplane.

After a hearty croissant and glass of freshly squeezed gold bar (sorry orange juice - one could easily be fooled by the bill), my dear lady and myself trundled down the hill to the beech - a somewhat vertiginous journey descending about 350 vertical metres. Upon arrival we were greeted with it’s fair to say, by one of the most delightful coves the island has to offer for those seeking the simple life of a Mediterranean pecheur. Gazing as we did at the azure waters (now I understand why the Italian football team is called the Azzuri) we noticed the unmistakable lines of a sleek speed boat puttering in to the pier to unload its passengers.

Upon closer inspection the vessel’s name was preceded by the initials T/T, which as a result of a little previous top trump lifestyle type research, I knew to mean ... "Tender to". The boat can't have been more than about 10 metres in length and apparently only had room for four crew and two passengers - the crew

distinguished by their smart ‘boaty’ type uniforms - and the passengers being clad in brightly coloured Lycra. It was of course, as my Cotswold Style readers will have readily recognised, the support vessel for the truly enormous yacht bobbing gently at anchor a hundred yards or so offshore.

The purpose for this trip then revealed itself; off came the passengers, followed by two crew members each carrying a stylish electric cycle type contraption for the passengers to enjoy their morning workout on their bikes. One supposes cycling around and around the deck of ones private battleship may become boring.

At this point my dear lady and I exchanged glances - and concluded that even with picnic Armageddon - there were many levels of lifestyle which were elevated way further above the parameters of a mere Gloucestershire picnic.

As we contemplated the scene unfolding before us, I was strangely reassured that however well some folk may have done in life - there were always those who appeared not only to have the cake so to speak but the entire cake factory as well. Returning to the Cotswolds would remind us once again of the beauty of the countryside we inhabit - and by great food fortune because of the lack of sea adjacent to it there would be no need to enter a super yacht race as well. Suddenly picnic Armageddon looks positively affordable!

Somewhere for the Weekend?

Our very own Cotswoldia couple, Mrs and Mr Jones, hosts our travel section.

They thoroughly investigate destinations ideal for a little trip away revealing vital tips on a glamorous getaway and also provide the inside track to ensure the destination caters for a range of tastes and wallets. From the slickest city hangouts to peaceful boltholes, you won’t waste a moment planning your travels.

This month we visit SALCOMBE in Devon “Ah-ha!” roared Mrs Jones in delight, after she received notification of where they were heading, “The Cotswolds-bythe-Sea.” It had to be Salcombe; the absolute favourite destination of anyone who regards themselves as ‘one who is in the know.’

And it wasn’t just a much needed escapade for Mrs Jones this time, faithful Fido was joining them on the jaunt as Mr Jones had made sure his really favourite companion was also going to receive the best holiday.

Getting There It’s so easy – hop on the M5 South then the A38 towards Plymouth and within 2 ¼ hours you are pulling off. Mrs & Mr Jones knew from past experience that the M5 can be highly unpredictable especially with road works, which seem to have been in existence for the past 5 years, so Mr Jones had decided to visit a fabulous pub en route, 20 minutes before Plymouth and only a few miles from the main road to south Devon and Cornwall.

Ugborough This is a picturesque Devon village, a stones throw from Dartmoor National Park and the perfect place to explore stunning landscapes avec Fido as well as being on the edge of South Hams with its array of wonderful 52 JULY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

beaches and coastal footpaths.

Nestled in the village is The Anchor Inn (www.anchorinnugborough.co.uk Tel: 01752 690388). A charming, traditional yet contemporary pub with ten bedrooms, Fido friendly and if one was travelling with the ‘Little Jones’’, they offer large family and interconnecting rooms.

Mrs Jones by now had her usual thirst upon her and was delighted to sit in the oak window seat to peruse the menu and wine list while Mr Jones enjoyed sampling some of the local Real Ales.

The food was scrumptious – Salt & Pepper Local Cuttlefish with tomato, chilli and red pepper salsa. “Much, much better than rubbery calamari,” Mrs Jones chomped approvingly, while her husband tackled a huge slab of creamy Duck Liver Parfait with truffle butter, onion relish and warm brioche. The mains of

Steak & Bay’s Gold Ale Pie and Bay’s Gold Beer Battered Hake with the best chunky chips and pea puree were just as good. The quality of the food was top notch and it would have been more preferable to head up to the very pretty rooms and get a good kip. But Fido needed a serious walkies, so Mr Jones took to the wheel of the car and headed off where they discovered….

Bigbury-on-Sea The Jones’ were openmouthed and Fido was in his utter element. Miles of white sandy beach lay in front of them including the notorious Burgh Island, with its Art Deco hotel which was the inspiration for Agatha Christie’s Evil Under The Sun and has been the host to many famous as well as infamous playwrights, actors and stars. one can walk across to the island for a pint in The Pilchard Inn adjacent to the hotel, which has been quenching the thirst of the island for 700 years but Mrs Jones wanted to head left, up the vast spans of beach to check out some serious ‘muscle’, snapping the waves on their surf boards.

One can very easily walk the 13 mile coastal path from Bigbury to Salcombe but Mrs Jones was by now ridiculously over-excited to reach her final destination so the final part of their drive took them to….

Salcombe “Utterly delightful,” Mrs Jones purred on entering the town at South Sands where they would be staying for the next few days. She marveled at the position of the South Sands Hotel – it was there, right there on the beach. “My goodness it’s as good as a ski-in, ski-ski out chalet!” she exclaimed.

The boutique South Sands is the kind of hotel you see in glossy travel supplements but don’t actually envisage exist in the UK; the setting is a kind of Californian Santa Monica but with none of the brassiness. It’s a piece of heaven and so close to The Cotswolds.

Salcombe town centre itself is only 1.4 miles away therefore it was time to explore….

Getting Around The roads are narrow hence the Bentley must be left at home. During the daytime the obvious way to get into Salcombe is to catch the sea ferry on the beach directly in front of the hotel, which goes every half hour but Mr Jones

(who thinks he is Chris Hoy), insisted that they cycle using the hotel’s electric bikes. Mrs Jones is sniffy when it comes to cycling - she despises it; its not good for the boobs or face but it was a better alternative than knowing she may have to walk back after many, large glasses of vino. Much to her surprise, she found that these electric bikes were one of the most exciting things she has experienced and - tra-lala - switch the ‘engine’ on up the hill and she had become Vicky Pendleton.

Eating & Drinking There is an array of teashops, pubs and cafes in Salcombe and there is a choice for everyone but without doubt Captain Morgan’s (www.captain-morgans.co.uk) where the ferry to and from South Sands is based, is the only place to go for a big (non-greasy) fry-up, a crab sandwich

lunch or just a take-away coffee. Mrs Jones liked the look of dick and wills (www.dickandwills.co.uk), which is a buzzing waterside brasserie and bar with a sophisticated, friendly atmosphere and The Winking Prawn (www.winkingprawngroup.co.uk) in North Sands, a shabby chic beach café offers delicious seafood and BBQs and well worth a visit after having a dip in the sea which is across the road.

The incredible beauty of the English coastline is none more apparent than in this part of Devon. Mrs & Mr Jones couldn’t wait to don their boots and with a yapping, highly excited Fido decided to walk the route from South Sands to the bay of Hope Cove just over 6½ miles away. Most of the land in this area is National Trust owned and therefore the paths are immaculate, well signposted and relatively easy walks for people of all fitness levels. The views are breathtaking, trekking over the cliff tops and 2 hours later, the Jones’ arrived in Hope Cove for a pint and spot of lunch at the Hope & Anchor pub >>> COTSWOLD STYLE JULY 2016 53

The South Sands Hotel

This idyllic hotel offers an outstanding stay for all; whether you would like time on your own, with friends and family (perfect to take grandparents with you too) and of course the beloved mutt. The sea facing rooms are fabulously appointed with large contemporary bathrooms, L’Occitane products and all the luxuries one would expect from a hotel of this quality. The Beach Suites are ideal if you are with children and families and they include fully equipped kitchens

with a dishwasher and washer/dryer as well as a dining room table, chairs and sofas for which to chill.

South Sands has recently appointed Allister Bishop as their new Executive Chef. After 25 years working in prestigious restaurants including Harrods, Le Meridian and Hilton in London, Allister brings with him a wealth of experience and is highly creative bringing masterstrokes into the food he serves. Mrs & Mr Jones were fortunate that during their stay, one of the hotel’s monthly events, the Wine Supper was happening. Five mesmeric courses were served with five of the most delicious (and much to the agreement of Mrs Jones), generous glasses of matched wines.

The ‘Wine Supper’ runs once a month throughout the year (excluding July,

A couple of cooling ciders later, there was no way Mrs Jones intended to go back the way she came, so all it took was a quick phone call to those charming people back at the South Sands Hotel and 15 minutes later the hotel Land Rover appeared, to whisk them back to a hot, luxuriating bath.

Water Sports You don’t need to go far to get onto the water around Salcombe whether you are a sailor, kayaker, surfer or even if you’re not any of these things. Mr Jones being the highly competitive type offered his wife a sporting dual – Paddle Boarding.

for giving it a go. Sea Kayak Salcombe (www.seakayaksalcombe.co.uk) is situated on the beach in front of the South Sands Hotel and provides all the equipment you need. After a safety briefing, the Jones’ headed into the sea and started by kneeling on the boards before the transition to standing up and

Even if one isn’t staying at the hotel, no holiday to Salcombe would be complete if you haven’t experienced a long Dunch (lunch stretching into dinner), sitting on the glorious terrace overlooking the sea, whilst enjoying delicious food and wine.

What the South Sands Hotel should really trademark though ( apart from their mesmerising views), is the tremendous, friendly service you will receive from all the staff that will do anything for you. With chortles of mirth from Mrs Jones, her husband was in the water within minutes as she glided along using her elegant, balancing skills acquired from years of yoga. Not only is this a hilarious activity, it is a wonderful way to see the houses, inlets and secluded beaches from the sea.

Kayakers of all ages (many in their 70s) paddled past and Mrs & Mr Jones realised this is a great way for couples to spend some solid hours together.

When to go All year round but highly recommended out of peak holiday season when the town and walking footpaths are quieter.

Do you find yourself struggling to go off with a million things whirring around your mind, panicking how you are going to get it all done? Do you wake up in the night perhaps in a massive sweat with the realisation you have forgotten to do something or are dreading going into work tomorrow? Do you stress about your children and your own happiness, which leaves you feeling exhausted, constantly anxious and throughout the day, finding your panic escalating as you still haven’t achieved everything you were meant to have done?

I have been living like this everyday… for months.

I try and de-stress by exercising as regularly as possible but my mind is one constant anxious, panic and I can’t switch off. A friend recommended I saw Reut Sapir who is a Naturopath and Reflexologist who works from Neal’s Yard in Cheltenham. I knew I just had to make the time to see her or my world was going to come crashing down.

Reut believes that all of us have the potential to nourish ourselves to good health and wellbeing through balancing ourselves by taking a holistic approach – something I was sceptical about.

On my first visit Reut talked calmly and gently to me, about ‘me’ and I found myself opening up to her. Do you know what? Though it’s very self-centered, it’s actually rather nice to talk about yourself for a while especially while someone is patiently listening! We discussed past emotional events, my current state of lifestyle, diet and of course all my anxieties.

I ascertained that ‘trying to do it all’, is the reason why I can’t sleep and this often brings on the horrendous night sweats which I can’t even put down to the menopause!

Being a conscious eater I didn’t think my diet was a particular problem but there is

no question after consultation with Reut, there is huge room for improvement and by adding some supplements such as Spirulina to an ‘on the hoof’ protein shake for example, can make all the difference as well as being stricter in getting more greens into my body through making a quick smoothie.

Whilst being a Naturopath, Reut is a renowned Reflexologist and she finished my sessions with caring attention, massaging my pressure points and enabling me to unwind and stop panicking.

Reut had recommended some herbal balancing supplements, which I was to take for a month and within 4 days I noticed a small difference… 8 days later, a substantial difference. They were alleviating my panic I felt on driving the kids to school (in fact there was very little shouting of ‘hurry up’ at the children before even getting in the car!) and I was

able to work much more effectively throughout the day. The evening tablets made me look forward to my bed, as I was more relaxed rather than completely exhausted. Reut has taught me a fantastic, deep breathing exercise, which on occasions, knocks me out and I sleep so soundly.

I was cynical before seeing Reut but am, no longer as I need to keep my life on this even-keel, so I will now be going to her once a month to check on my progress, change the supplements which address the root cause of my problems rather than just the symptoms and above all enjoy the indulgence of the Reflexology which I believe, is ten times more effective than massage as it heals the body from within.

COVER UP TO KEEP SAFE THIS SUMMER There may be clouds in the sky but that doesn’t mean your skin is safe!

That’s the message skin experts are hoping to get across as summer approaches and people start shedding their shirts in an attempt to get their annual sun tan. With summer now upon us dermatologists are taking the opportunity to highlight the dangers of spending too much time in the sun, and they are keen to point out that it doesn’t have to be ‘a scorcher’ before people should start taking protective action.

“When the sun is blasting down everyone should know the drill by now,” explained Dr William Porter a consultant dermatologist at The Spire Clinic, Cheltenham Spa. “The danger is when there is a cloud cover or breeze, everything appears cooler. Clouds reduce the amount of ultraviolet A and B radiation that reaches the earth's surface and our skin, but they don’t stop the damaging rays. Clouds block more visible light than ultraviolet radiation,” he explained.

Government figures show that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and rates continue to rise with at least 100,000 new cases diagnosed each year resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths.

Dr Porter added: “In the case of young children if it is warm enough for them to be playing out in shorts and t-shirts then the sun is usually strong enough to merit covering them in a protective cream or lotion. I would also advise that, particularly between 11am and 3pm when the sun rays are at their strongest, children should wear long sleeved tee-shirts and light, long trousers.”

The Gloucestershire Festival of Polo at Beaufort Polo Club Jockey's v's The Olympic Legends was the must see match for Sundays charity polo playing action. Spectators were highly entertained watching Zara Philips up against the newly knighted AP McCoy. On several occasions, players were forgetting which direction their goal end was and the basic polo rules certainly went out the back door!

Both teams showed great enthusiasm, throughly enjoying the experience in front of a great crowd who enjoyed their traditional sideline picnics and Pimm’s with the occasional shower. Strike Out this Summer Cotswold Style’s Beauty Columnist, Catherine Shortall presents a mini make up masterclass to revamp your look for this coming season here are some strong looks and make up techniques out there at the moment, especially focusing on brows, contouring and many others that I shall look into covering in more depth in future columns. But for starters, I thought I would focus on three of the seasons hottest on-trend looks that women of all ages can try out and adapt into their beauty regimes. For those feeling a little bit overwhelmed by the choice of products and looks out there, others who are just needing inspiration for new products to replace their make up bag mainstays, or beauty aficionados looking for some on trend technique advice…here are three of the hottest looks for summer.

colours in the boldest abstract pieces of art. The look is bold, bright, brave and alarmingly beautiful. Striking is a perfect adjective and the boldest looks certainly require an element of confidence but a strong Matte Lip with toned down eye make up can take the edge off (if you feel you’ve gone a little too overboard).

Keep your complexion muted down (BB Creams and just a touch of tinted moisturiser and highlighter work well with a bold lip) and work that smile.

The Natural, Dewy Base

The Matte Lip Whilst the ‘Matte Lip’ has been around for a few seasons now, the focus has been mainly on the ‘Nude’ palette of colours, from light tan shades through to toned down hues of plum and berries. However, this season is seeing a slightly more dramatic edge with a lean on the bold matte look, with brighter shades seeing a come back and the emphasis on being slightly more daring is all the more encouraged.

Think matte scarlet lips, reflecting the kind of shade you see in the darkest summer cherries, matte peach hues that mirror golden summer evening skies and matte pinks that match the kind of

Dewy and natural are the key words, which in warmer weather is actually a bit of a relief from having to apply heavy foundations and powders. BB Creams, Highlighters and Lighter Foundations are the products du jour and elements of all of these products can be included to create the perfect summer canvas for your make up look. Here are the steps to create this super natural, glowing look: 1. Apply a decent primer – Elizabeth Arden Flawless Start Instant Perfecting Primer (£28) (you only need a minuscule amount and let it soak into the skin for a couple of minutes).

2. Mix a Highlighter with a BB Cream and apply sparingly (we want to show off those freckles) – I recommend La Roche Posay

Hydreane BB Cream (£15) mixed with a small amount of MAC’s Strobe Cream (£24.50). Apply in sweeping downward motions on the face and aim for light to medium coverage.

3. Dust Benefit’s Hoola Bronzing Powder (£23.50) (with an angled brush) onto cheekbones, temples, down the sides of the nose and around the jawbones to give a very lightly contoured effect where the Sun would naturally catch.

The Metallic Eye For Day Time looks with a Matte lip, it’s good to keep the eye make up pretty basic but Night Time allows for a slightly more alluring look, a la Metallics.

NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD By the time you read this, the result of the EU Referendum will be known.

Many of you will know my long held views for us to play a leading role in Europe and so for this issue I thought I would write about some of my work with local organisations in the Stroud Valleys and the Vale. Following the tragic news about Jo Cox, she would want all Members of Parliament to carry on serving their communities and this country so that is precisely what I will continue to do.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be invited to visit so many fabulous and worthy organisations that we have here in the Stroud Valleys and Vale.

These are places where day after day people are working tirelessly to either provide a brilliant education for our young people or create a homely environment for people less fortunate than ourselves or giving of their business facilities for the benefit of charities.

The Door Youth Project recently celebrated their 25th Anniversary. Their team work with young people and their families between the ages of 11 - 25 and provide a safe space for them to socialise and feel supported. One of the ways that they do this is through their mentoring program; if you'd like to make a positive impact on someone's life and have a few spare hours each week 74 JULY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

you could join their team of trained volunteers who support young people and their families through tough times.

Roselea Care home in Slimbridge provides a wonderful home environment for a small number of people with either learning disabilities or complex health needs. It's been part of the local community for 15 years and the people that live at Roselea are also themselves very much part of that community. The staff at Roselea are all dedicated individuals who provide flexible and responsive support recognising that everyone at Roselea has differing needs.

I was thrilled to be asked to present the Court Artist prize to Millie Townsend from St Dominic's Catholic Primary School in Nailsworth. This is part of the 'Mock Trials' initiative run by the Magistrates' Association aimed at creating an awareness of how a court operates.

The Multiple Sclerosis Society is set to benefit from the generosity of a local eLearning company, nimble. Local companies are invited to enter into a free draw to win one of three eLearning bundles, with the winners being asked to donate between £200 and £500 towards the charity. This is being run in conjunction with Sterling Business Networks and G Acceleration.

Over the summer I'm looking forward to meeting many more inspirational people that live and work in our fabulous Constituency.

GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN, MP FOR COTSWOLDS Readers will want to know my views about the EU referendum result.

I was at The Cotswolds count until 4am of the morning, so I was able to witness in detail the results in The Cotswolds.

However, we all now have to accept that the nation as a whole voted to leave the EU. Whatever the individual constituency result our democratic system dictates that the majority view should prevail, as the Prime Minister has done on behalf of HM Government.

The basis of the referendum, as agreed by Parliament and the Electoral Commission, was on the 'One Man One Vote' (OMOV) system and the constituency and local authority areas were chosen simply for administrative purposes. Every person in the country's vote was equal!

Furthermore, I was one of 84 MPs who signed the letter urging the PM not to resign immediately but for his own reasons he has decided so to do and

Style Politics therefore a leadership contest in the Conservative Party has now been triggered to elect a new Prime Minister with the aim of concluding by Friday, 2nd September.

The result of the referendum gives this country a huge opportunity but it is imperative that we make the right decisions. Therefore there needs to be a period of calm where the entire nation coalesces around a sensible plan and supports the next Prime Minister to negotiate a positive way forward in our future relationship with the EU and the wider world. We will continue to have excellent relations with our EU neighbours but it will be on a different basis.

ALEX CHALK, MP FOR CHELTENHAM With school almost out for summer, education continues to remain high on my list of parliamentary priorities. I was pleased to welcome Education Minister Nicky Morgan to Cheltenham to meet local teachers and discuss my reservations about Government plans to force all schools to become academies.

Whilst academies have been a huge success in many parts of the country (just look at our outstanding schools here in Cheltenham) I made clear that I was not convinced that this justified a one-size-fits-all solution. If we believe in trusting teachers and governors – which I do – then so long as their school is good or outstanding we should leave it to them to decide what governance arrangements suit them

best. I am delighted that the Department for Education has listened to my representations and those of some colleagues, and will not now be pursuing the plans.

In Parliament, I am proud to be a founding member of the new Parliamentary campaign group to support women hit by the acceleration of the equalisation of the State Pension Age, first in 1995 and then in 2011.

Around 3,960 women In Cheltenham are directly affected. I am lobbying the new Work and Pensions Secretary on their behalf and will continue the fight for a fair deal for the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) women.

I am campaigning to improve tongue tie services for mothers and new-born babies and the war on ‘grot spots’ continues. In June I met with senior councillors and road contractors Amey to raise my concerns about Cheltenham’s dreaded potholes. I was pleased to secure a pledge from Amey to fix the 50 worst offenders across the town, as nominated by local residents, within 28 days.

I’ve also been supporting some of our great local causes, including abseiling down the Eagle Tower in aid of St Vincent’s and St George’s, and joining Eddie the Eagle for the ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ walk in Pittville Park for Gloucestershire Carers. I continue to be humbled by the kindness and compassion of so may people in our local community. It’s part of what makes Cheltenham such a special place to live. www.alexchalk.com LAURENCE ROBERTSON, MP FOR TEWKESBURY I should like to pay tribute to David Cameron. Since he became leader of the Conservative Party and particularly as Prime Minister, he has demonstrated great courage. He has also tackled the deficit, increased resources for the NHS, improved our economy and has given the British people a say on our membership of the EU. I'm sorry that he is resigning as Prime Minister but I understand his reasons. He has campaigned passionately and very strongly, in favour of our staying in the EU

and I can see that it would therefore have been very difficult for him to then negotiate our exit from the EU. I do, though, of course, wish him well for the future. We must now look to secure someone as Prime Minister who can unite this great nation.

I am, of course, pleased that the British people have decided that we should leave the EU and that my own constituency supported this view. It is now for us to negotiate new relationships with the EU and indeed with countries across the world. In doing so, we must ensure that the voices of all our citizens, including those who voted to remain, in all corners of our Kingdom, are heard loud and clear.

I understand the concerns, which such people expressed and we must listen to those concerns and move to reassure people.

These are exciting times for our country.

We are the fifth largest economy in the world, sit at the table of international committees and organisations, have the second largest defence spending in NATO, have a independent judiciary, are world leaders in technology and finance and have a mature Parliamentary democracy, so we are quite capable of governing ourselves.

However, with power comes responsibility and it will be for all of us in Parliament to deliver progress and security for all our people.

BREXIT Explain The Market’s Guy Shone, gives a detailed analysis on the financial impact of Britain leaving the European Union The vote is over. The British people have spoken and all eyes are now on the financial markets.

It was always clear that a decision to leave the EU would cause some economic turbulence. Markets don't like uncertainty and we do now enter a period with lots of unknowns. However, there is no reason to equate this situation with the global crash of 2008 triggered by the Lehman Bros collapse. The situation is very different.

Our economic infrastructure is more resilient, our leaders are pre-warned and the market volatility is not as severe. Market fluctuations are though already upon us and will be with us for some time yet as such massive adjustments pan out. But in the words of the former Bank of England Governor Lord Mervyn King there really is "no need to panic".

In an interview with the BBC, King said: "What we need is a bit of calm now, there's no reason for any of us to panic. Markets move up, markets move down. We don't yet know where they will find their level and the whole aspect of volatility is that there is a trial and error process going on before markets discover what the right level of stock markets and exchange rates actually are."

Kit Juckes, Head of Foreign Exchange at Societe Generale, also said Brexit is a not a 'Lehman moment' that will trigger an unforeseen chain of events.

"Policymakers and companies have had time to make contingency plans, even if they can't fully offset the impact."

Property investing and mortgages have attracted concern but the real impact of Brexit on this part of the economy so far has been a mixed picture. Some of the biggest listed UK homebuilders have suffered big share price drops since the Referendum result but many

commentators believe that this plus the sharp fall in the pound could also stimulate international investment into the market.

The latest mortgage lending data also highlights both the positive and negative impact of recent turbulence. Conventional lending for home purchases has slowed but lending to support investment is on the rise. The Council of Mortgage Lenders said mortgage advances worth £18.2million were handed out in May, a 4 % increase compared to April and 14 % higher than last year. It was the highest May figure since 2008, when gross mortgage lending hit £23.7billion. Property developers are borrowing more, second mortgages are also on the rise - However lending just for house purchases has slowed compared with this time last year.

Those of us with a mortgage might well welcome the prospect of ultra-low interest rates. The flipside though is the negative impact on our savings.

Laith Khalaf, Senior Analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said, "The Brexit vote has substantially moved the dial on interest rate expectations, with markets now expecting rates to go negative in the UK. "This is good news for borrowers, who can now expect lower mortgage rates for even longer but cash savers will be wondering just how many years they have to wait to get a decent return on their deposits. The Bank of England may soon find itself between a rock and a hard place, if the economy and inflation start pointing in different policy directions.”

Brexit brings some economic uncertainty. Time will tell the extent of the financial disruption but the signs so far have not been exclusively negative. A falling pound causes worry but it is also likely to encourage more foreign investment; a fluctuating FTSE makes morbidly compelling viewing

but short term volatility rarely really tells us very much about the true health of an economy. One thing markets do need is a plan for progress – a clear path for how banks, businesses and governments will work together to ensure economic growth.

There is no reason why the UK cannot thrive in our newly independent state – but we mustn’t wait for the politicians’ permission. Neither should we expect our millions of amazing entrepreneurs to take up the slack. Big business is the cohort in this story at conspicuously highest risk of dropping the ball economically. Our largest corporations frankly need to step up their game.

The public rightly feels let down by the Davos club. Far too much corporate cosiness, behind the scenes deals and too little accountability has long been a serious issue – but better, braver corporate leadership is needed now more than ever if we are going to make a success of our new future. Big business must deal quickly with the reality of a referendum result they didn’t want and get much braver with investment decisions. Corporate leaders need to grow up, stop all the hiding, hedging and career management and show some metal.

Fearful of the Internet With concerns growing for how safe children are online, Sharon Copsey, NSPCC regional head of service for South West England, discusses the issues of internet safety and cyberbullying and how parents can help to keep their children safe online “Every parent knows that keeping their children safe online is a daunting and challenging task.

Young people are growing up in a world where they access the internet with ever-increasing ease, now spending an average of 12 hours a week online.

Along with the undoubted benefits come a number of dangers that can pose a risk to any child at any time.

Figures from children’s charity the NSPCC reveal one in five children aged between 8 and 11 who go online has a social media profile, rising to seven in ten children aged between 12 and 15, but do parents know how to protect them?

While online grooming and child sexual exploitation may grab the headlines, cyberbullying is an increasingly worrying phenomenon with lasting psychological, emotional and physical effects.

Research has found that one in four children has experienced something upsetting on a social networking site and one in three children has been a victim of cyberbullying.

Last year there were 7,296 counselling sessions with young people who talked to ChildLine about online bullying and safety and three-quarters of parents have looked for or received information or advice about how to help their child manage online risks.

Despite these statistics, many adults are still struggling to keep up with the best ways to keep children safe from harm and abuse.

When bullying and abuse happens online, using social networks, games and mobile phones, a child can feel like there’s no escape because it can happen wherever they are, at any time of day or night.

The NSPCC’s Net Aware guide, in partnership with O2, has tried to tackle this by informing parents and professionals about the most popular sites, apps and games that children are using online.

The guide offers tips on a number of the factors that can affect a child online, including seeing inappropriate content, ignoring age restrictions and communicating with strangers.

It also stresses the importance of setting parental controls, which can be used to filter and block content, restrict information that can be shared, set limits on time spent online and at what time of day and set different profiles for different family members.

Most internet providers offer free filters that control the content any device connected to the home broadband and search engine can be set, to block inappropriate or explicit content from search results.

Smartphones, computers and tablets also come with controls that can be set up to restrict access to explicit content, in-app purchasing and other content that is not suitable for children. Mobile networks are usually set to block all 18 plus content, although each network does differ so it is best to check with the network provider what is covered.

Many entertainment platforms and sites have safety settings. Each is different and some, such as Netflix, allow the user to create individual profiles with different control levels, so that each family member only sees content appropriate to them.

More advice on making devices and content child-friendly is available on the

Internet Matters website, which offers a step-by-step guide to setting up internet safety.

At the NSPCC we want parents and guardians to talk to their child about their favourite sites and what they like doing online, just like they would with offline activities.

Exploring online together can also be a good way to offer children support, while finding out what they know.

It’s easier to have conversations about online safety little and often, rather than trying to cover everything at once.

As children get older and technology changes make sure you keep talking about what they’re doing and how to stay safe.

We would urge parents to keep their knowledge up to date. Having the right information at their fingertips will help them feel confident and in control.”

The NSPCC currently has a five-year strategy running until 2021, which includes five goals to make five million children safer. One of these goals is to make children safe from abuse online.

It is a hollow victory if we do not work to keep the ‘Great’ in ‘Great Britain’. Sandra Paul discusses the social and political divide over the Referendum almost can’t believe it. I urged everyone to take heart and to vote Leave and 52% of the UK did. I urged readers not to vote Remain solely because they were afraid of the unknown. To be unafraid of taking a leap into new waters because I have absolute faith that we can make a new Britain – one that is not tied politically to Brussels.

My views are not those of an isolationist or a UKIP supporter. But I am strongly in favour of an accountable leadership and I do not believe that the bureaucratic monster that is allowed to live and grow in Brussels is either accountable or democratic.

Middle England joined forces with the country’s industrial heartlands of the Northeast, Northwest and Wales to comprehensively reject warnings of economic Armageddon and voted to leave.

Yet this isn’t a moment for jubilation.

We proudly call ourselves the United Kingdom and yet today we are not united. With Scotland voting overwhelmingly to Remain, and a similar picture in Northern Ireland, there will be powerful pressures upon the fabric of the UK. We are a country deeply polarised. Narrow margins between Remain and Leave in many areas were matched by opposite views in families and amongst friends. What surprised many was the overwhelming Leave vote in many working class regions that were traditionally Labour strongholds. Is that the fault of the Labour leadership that demonstrated a desultory wish to Remain or is it disenchantment with politicians on the whole – both in Westminster and Brussels?

London's overwhelming vote to remain will simply be seen as evidence of how out of touch it has become with the rest of England. Cheltenham, The Cotswolds and Stroud split with the rest of Gloucestershire by voting to Remain.

The country versus city divide is matched

I

by a generational divide: young people largely supported Remain. Today we are witnessing real anger among young people asking why the older generation is making decisions that will affect their future?

Why is there this generational polarisation? Is it because our youth embrace cultural differences through travel and social contact? And why did older people largely support Leave? Is it because they are more aware of the impact our union had on the country’s pocket and sovereignty? I’m sure there are a myriad of reasons.

In the days leading up to the referendum, Brexit supporters were advising each other to take a pen along to the polling station rather than use the pencil on offer when voting, suspecting the establishment would simply erase their ‘x’. That belief in an establishment conspiracy will not go away with the result.

It’s a real wake up call for Westminster and Brussels.

It has revealed an electorate that is fed up with being unheard, un-listened to.

Fed up of being told they are racist simply because they mention concern about lack of control on immigration.

And defiance against the status quo that has shored up big business, the political elite and the bureaucratic structure of Brussels.

We need to be calm and have a period of reflection. The world isn’t falling to pieces. Markets are always volatile and our referendum will obviously have an impact on global markets. However, the fundamentals in our economy remain strong and if we keep calm and take measured decisions it will be fine.

The Germans will still want to sell us cars. They will not want to have a tariff war with Britain. Trade agreements will not stop now. Things will go on. There will be change, obviously. But change can be good.

Those who campaigned to Remain must stop the emotional Armageddon rhetoric. All they are doing is talking down our financial markets and our standing in the world. Listen to what the Bank of England Governor has said. We need a period of stability and calm and to remember that the UK was on a solid footing on 22 June. Britain is the 5th largest economy in the world and there is no reason why we should not continue to be.

The break with the EU will not be straightforward or swift but that does not mean it needs to be poisonous. There is no need to rush it. A new Prime Minister will take us forward and I hope whoever it is, they will listen to the people.

The decision has been made – it is now up to everyone to make it work. We have weathered storms before. We cooperated with Europe before we joined in 1973 and we will do so again but we will have taken back control.

Now is the time to repair relations internally and to embrace change. Why not consider this an opportunity for Britain to be an even greater success story?

A Michelin Star Day Food Writer, Rachel Cappuccini learnt a new thing about cooking at Le Champignon Sauvage here are still a number of things I want to do before I throw in the towel and go live by the sea with my dogs. To work in the kitchen of a Michelin star restaurant was top of the list. So I was thrilled to be invited to spend the day at Cheltenham’s very own Le Champignon Sauvage in the Suffolks, the longest standing two-star restaurant headed by legend David Everitt-Matthias and his gracious wife Helen.

There are many misconceptions about restaurants blessed with such accolades.

Possibly dating back to the 80’s and early 90’s when many Michelin star restaurants were considered rather stuffy, formal places, serving over-fussy food and certainly not for the likes of you and I. Far indeed from the original concept of the guide, first produced in 1900 for motorists travelling around France listing useful information such as petrol stations and hotels and then from1926, restaurants. The Guide is now published worldwide and with it grew the desire for chefs to achieve the ultimate three-stars.

I still remember the shocking news that the celebrated three-star chef Benoit Violier had killed himself in 2003 after losing a star.

I arrived bright and early at the discreet front door feeling a little nervous. I was met by David himself, who introduced me to his team before a quick tour of the kitchen. I was then handed some rather large chef ’s whites! My day was spent at the various chef stations learning new skills and then I prepared a dessert for the new menu. I soon forgot my nerves as the atmosphere in the kitchen was possibly the most relaxed and calm I have encountered, yet as finely tuned as a Ferrari engine with clear discipline. I loved the singing too, perfect harmony just like the food prep. No shouting or swearing in this kitchen, leaving room for focussed creativity and achievement.

Chatting to David during the day I learnt that like me he gained his passion for food at a young age and in particular from an aunt who was a ‘hedgerow cook’ using nettles, elderflower and wild garlic.

Just like my mother! After a promising career in the city or indeed a professional cricket career beckoned, David made the decision to follow his passion for food instead. The very fact that he has never missed a service in over 29 years (apart

from one night off following a knee op) speaks for itself. He mentioned Tom Aitkin, Brett Graham and Phil Howard amongst those he admires, as well as all his ‘boys’ who have worked for him and gone onto great things themselves. If one day he should throw in the towel, David spoke of his desire to visit Japan: “…where discipline and respect are found in such simple things…”

So, having skinned pig’s trotters and made caramel fudge, my dessert was a joy to make. Please do not be put off by the very mention of tapioca. Hopefully most of you are too young to remember tapioca on the school dinner menu otherwise known as ‘frog spawn’. Do try this recipe, it’s a wonderfully clean and refreshing dessert, perfect for a hot summers day. Otherwise, you could go and enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner at the restaurant and order it for your pudding! Thank you David, Helen and the team for a day I will never forget.

Tapioca 125g tapioca 450g coconut milk 5 lime leaves 1 stick lemon grass Juice and zest of ½ lime

Marinated pineapple ½ ripe pineapple peeled and cored 30g caster sugar Juice of 1 lime 8 leaves of mint shredded Palm sugar syrup 100g palm sugar 200g water

Plus 1 Peeled and Cored Pineapple

Meet Rachel...

After moving from London to the Cotswolds to bring up her family, Rachel Cappuccini bought and ran the legendary Lamb Inn in Burford, before relocating to Cheltenham, where she set up and still runs highly acclaimed Gusto café and its catering business, now in its tenth year.

Method: Tapioca

Place the tapioca in a bowl and cover with cold water, allow to soak overnight, to swell.

Place in a strainer, drain and remove all the excess water.

Bruise the lime leaves to release their flavour and place in a thick bottomed saucepan with the coconut milk, lime zest, and the tapioca and simmer for between 10 and 15 minutes, stirring very frequently as it can stick. The pearls should be opaque and just tender. Most of the coconut milk should be absorbed making it thick and creamy.

Remove from the heat, cool, place in a bowl and refrigerate.

When ready to serve squeeze in the Developing innovative menus, forging links with local companies and working as a private chef means that Rachel is still very much hands-on.

Rachel’s consistent love affair with food means the next meal is never far from her mind; day-today nutrition and nutrition in sport are of particular interest as well as bigger issues such as school meals, food wastage and animal welfare.

Nestled in the valleys, on the border of Worcestershire and the Cotswolds, 25 minutes from Cheltenham and close to Pershore, one couldn’t ask for a more tranquil venue for a local night away.

Set on a 260-acre working farm, the family run Eckington Manor is a beguiling blend of medieval architecture and entirely up-to-the-minute contemporary buildings and interiors. Just across a courtyard is the acclaimed restaurant run

by Masterchef: The Professionals 2015 winner, Mark Stinchcombe and his wife Sue. The building also hosts the renowned cookery school all of which is surrounded by rolling fields and glorious views.

The Eckington Manor staff, all of who are utterly delightful, welcomed my man and I and we were made to feel instantly at home. We were shown to our charming, spacious room (there are 17 luxurious bedrooms and suites) situated in the barn, which had lovely features such as a beamed ceiling, a super kingsize bed with Egyptian cotton linen and a freestanding bath while in the ‘Fired Earth’ bathroom, there was an enormous walk-in shower. All the rooms are individually designed to the highest level of comfort.

Being a warm summer’s day it was a delight to meander around the farm soaking up the views before heading to the honesty bar situated in the Manor to enjoy a few G&T’s in the evening dusk.

The oldest part of the hotel’s venues, the Manor boasts fine antiques, leather sofas

and roaring log fires for the cooler months and is a wonderful place to settle down with a good book.

We wandered over to what we knew was going to be a highlight of our stay – dinner cooked by Mark and Sue Stinchcombe. With Mark’s momentous achievement in winning Masterchef: The Professionals, the interest in dining here is at a peak. People have been travelling from across the country to taste the gastronomic menu provided by him and his equally talented wife Sue. Most of the ingredients they use in their food comes directly from Eckington’s award-winning farm which hosts an orchard and vegetable and herb gardens to illustrate the importance of using good, seasonal ingredients.

The restaurant is full every night so if you are wanting to head to Eckington Manor for a fabulous dinner or superb Sunday lunch, be sure to book well in advance. Our 3-course dinner exceeded our expectations enjoying salivating starters of Confit guinea fowl terrine, turnip & golden raisin & mustard seeds and Roasted beetroot, watercress, goats cheese fritter & curd; followed by succulent Pork belly with prune, sweet potato & spiced granola and Stonebass accompanied by wild garlic gnocchi, asparagus, red pepper, tomato & almond pesto. The divine puddings just melted in the mouth and we shared a Tonka bean

parfait, honey cream, apple sorbet & oat crumble and the Rhubarb soufflé, ginger bread ice cream & rhubarb juice. The food was out of this world!

We found the extensive wine list to be very reasonable considering the quality of bottles offered – a refreshing change from other establishments of similar ilk, which infuriatingly think its acceptable to charge astronomical prices for decent wine.

The following morning, we wandered over to take a look at Eckington Manor’s state of the art cookery school where they teach budding cooks the story of food - from garden fork to dinner fork.

The cooks learn how to choose and treat quality ingredients, creating dishes with wonderful flavours using simple recipes to enjoy again and again. Whether one is a beginner or an advanced home cook, they offer a range of fun and simple courses to choose from including Indian, Pasta Making, Thai, Fish and Shellfish as well as Easy Entertaining and Restaurant Cooking At Home (see the website for a full list of courses). The school boasts the largest number of AGA’s in a UK cookery school as well as a selection of Range cookers. The cookery school will also provide tailor made one-to-one and professional chef courses.

Claire in the County Kids Clubs – Claire Thayers mourns lost days with her children hank GOD my children have grown up – I remember this time of year – every year, the dreaded summer school holidays.

When the children were in nursery school, I didn’t have a worry in the world, it was only when they went to primary my stress levels went up 500%!

I was only talking to my youngest about this last week, coincidentally and we were both laughing (and almost crying) recalling the dreaded kids clubs that I sent her to.

We lived in Cornwall and I truly thought that by sending her to an outdoor activity centre, she would have such fun – well it sounded fun to me!

Kayaking, coasteering, rock climbing… little did I know she hated EVERY minute of it.

Bless her, she shared her stories with me and I had no recollection of any of them – how she was bullied by little ‘Johnny’ what chased her wanting a kiss, the blisters on her hands from paddling out to see the grey seals – which, when you grow up by the sea may seem enchanting for most but for her, just

another average day. Wetsuits that didn’t fit, sandwiches that were inedible, fear of heights (not helpful when you had to scale up a rock face) and a genuine hate of anything that required any sort of physical activity.

Yet my eldest LOVED it all, in fact so much so, she became an instructor.

So when you are having to decide what to do, don’t rush into it – take your time, do the research, try and work with some of your friends to share the picking up and dropping off, and ensure they have friends to go with, rather than turning up being ‘Billy no mates’.

I am sure there are many more kids clubs now than there was all those years ago, or was that because I was in Cornwall – but I have seen all sorts of great clubs up here in the Cotswolds.

But my best advice to you all … don’t be like me… don’t work through the WHOLE of the holidays and make sure you do take some time out. The saddest thing when I was talking to the girls, was that I don’t remember any of those stories… none! I was too busy thinking about deadlines, budgets and keeping

clients happy, rather than rock pooling, eating fish and chips by the sea, and sharing ice creams…because I got it all wrong! At the time, you don’t think you have an option but looking back I should have just taken the time out. In Cornwall there are few decent jobs and working for a male boss, in a professional firm, you didn’t want to let them down, when in fact, their wives were having a whale of a time with their children. What was I thinking of – I can never turn the clock back and I didn’t listen to those wise friends of mine who warned me.

So this year, book a week and do all those activities but do them together, take the ‘go pro’ and make some memories, because you know what… those memories are far more important than the over time money in the bank.

Just remember to take two boxes of plasters, make your own pack lunches and invest in a wetsuit!

On and Off the Pitch at The 2016 Brewin Dolphin Cricket Festival Charity Yogathon, Ladies Day and a Five O’clock Fun Club are on the agenda for this year’s Cheltenham’s Brewin Dolphin Cricket Festival The 2016 Brewin Dolphin Cricket Festival is the bringer of new experiences for everyone with its new look and new vibe this July. With cricket at both county and international level, there is also a smouldering array of new entertainment around the ground.

Up to 1000 people are expected on The College ground cricket pitch in the evening of Saturday July 16th in support for Hiren Joshi (pictured), a well loved face about town in Cheltenham, who is currently battling with Pancreatic Cancer. Shares of the proceeds from the event will be given to his chosen charity Pancreatic UK and the new Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospital Charity to support their campaign 'Hit Cancer for Six'.

Yogis and anyone who would like to try yoga have the opportunity to be part of the crowd that that will fill Cheltenham College cricket pitch this summer. The event has been created by Gill Kirkham of Rare Event and it promises to be very unique and special.

Sarah Jane Griffiths (SJ) and her brand ‘The Yoga Rebel' and other professionals are to give a taste of their individual styles, so the event will be an awesome collaboration of tuition offering participants nearly 3 hours of stretching, bending and exercise, with options for all levels of fitness. The evening session will take place after the cricket and is a County first.

The yoga team are SJ, Roman Wroth, Tom Burlinson, Karen Maidment, Evelyn Cribbin, and Sharon Branagh. This collaboration unites all yoga centres and represents six styles of yoga with lots of fun and level options. The 20 minute yoga segments are named STRALA, THERAPUTIC FLOW, BROGA, CRAZY NINJA, GENTLE CALM, and LAUGHTER. People can come along for the full

three hours or choose from the menu above. Entry is a very reasonable £15 for participants and £5 for friends and supporters.

In fact, the whole team at Laura Leigh down scissors and foils every Friday for private session in the salon.

holding The Yogathon and both were thrilled when Will Brown Chief Executive and The Gloucestershire County Ground agreed to hold the event as part of the new feel theme.

Gill says: ‘The festival has a new vibe for 2016 that is all about vitality, with a really exciting Ladies Day planned, and guests are to expect a day full of surprises following their champagne reception for a reduced hospitality rate of £72 . Some benefits to your children strength training Cotswold Style’s Fitness Expert, Luciano Kydd gets your kids off their social media With many young people today spending more and more time in front of the television, surfing the Internet or trying to impress each other on social media platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram; coupled with a sedentary lifestyle during their early childhood and adolescence years, there is an increased risk of this generation developing some chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis later in life, along with the rising cases of child obesity in the UK. Before we get into the benefits of strength training for children, I know there are worried or anxious parents out there who would want to ask the following questions: wouldn’t strength training or lifting weights place too much stress on growing muscle? Or stunt his/her growth?

Or isn’t it downright dangerous? The truth of the matter is these are just misconceptions, with no real science based foundation or proof and usually stems from parents’ own self-doubt or lack of understanding in the area.

The truth is that strength training, when conducted in a safe and supervised manner by someone like myself, is safe, effective and an efficient means of: conditioning young muscles, increasing muscular strength and endurance, improving their overall body composition which can help with controlling their weight to some degree, improving aerobic and anaerobic fitness, flexibility and an improvement in overall personal

self-confidence and esteem.

With regular participation in strength training programmes, children can have a more favourable impact on skill related/base fitness components that can be transferable in sport such as power, speed, agility, reaction time, balance and coordination. These are particularly useful for sports such as rugby, tennis, cricket, swimming, basketball, rounders, football and cross-country activities.

From my personal experience of working with clients looking to lose weight, get fitter or get stronger, it is usually individuals who didn’t like to participate in regular physical activity either by their own choosing or lack of not being motivated properly during their early years.

Furthermore this then has an adverse affect as seeing physical activity as something not for them, or something they cannot do on their own when asked to. This has a knock on effect later in life on their own bodyweight and coupled with poor nutrition advice over the years, sees their overall health, strength and wellness suffer with both their physiological and psychological wellbeing.

For me that’s one of the beauties of

doing strength training - it doesn’t discriminate against how you look or feel or even what age you are. You have just got to start from the place you’re at, doing basic movements using your own bodyweight, then include equipment such as bands, a med ball, machines and later on freeweights.

So begin today with getting your children off the couch or social media and doing some kind of physical activity, regardless whether it’s a sports or some type of strength training programme.

As it’s Olympics year there is a veritable smorgasbord of sports that have a passing appeal and then are forgotten for another four years.

I have a list of broken promises with sports that I really would love to try but geographically, the luge has discovered insufficient ice and snow to be cited on Cleeve Hill whilst the Cheltenham Lido doesn’t freeze over in winter for a rubber or two of curling.

Many years ago when we just had three channels on our TVs, equestrian events were trotted out with some regularity from the Horse of The Year show at Olympia each Christmas, to the Hickstead Derby bank in the summer with Burghley and Badminton somewhere in between.

Four years ago at the London Olympics the dressage event was the surprise package that kept on giving.

Next to a dog the British love the horse.

As such this is one Olympic sport that curiosity can repay with a call to the saddle.

Horse riding is extremely versatile; whatever your age, ability or location there are countless ways to get involved.

School’s Out! Kate Justice is finally taking valuable time to be with her family I was at a dinner party last week with friends who have children aged 16 and 18. The conversation was dominated by talk of exams and revision. My own children are still a few years away from GCSEs and A levels but listening to the comments about studying and books while the sun shines brought back memories so familiar, it felt for a moment, that it was only last year I did my own (it was actually more than 20 years ago).

The hot weather we had in June, revision chat and the impending long summer break all seem to go together so well. However, I've now worked through more summer holidays than I ever had off while at school. Having the kids at home does change the atmosphere though – even if my own routine stays the same.

Being freelance, the summer holidays (and any school holidays for that matter) are my busiest time – which is rather a pity when you're a parent... but it's difficult and impractical to turn down much needed work while it's on offer. But this year, I have made a slight change. Helped by a long contract of 18 months that finished in April, I have saved up and made the decision to keep the school holidays this summer, free.

There are a number of reasons why.

My son is in Year 7 – his first at secondary school – and he'll be 13 years old in November. He absolutely ADORES school and is rather obsessed with his social life too. I can feel him drifting away from me a little. My daughter is about to move up to year 7, leaving primary school and the innocence that go’s with it, behind. This might be the last summer holidays that they actually want to hang out with me – so I want to be there! Over the last few years, I have missed so many day trips, exciting visits, relaxing picnics, opportunities for weekends away, visits to friends, chances to have friends to stay, that I am actually quite cross.

Also, now that the kids will both be at secondary school, the prospect of taking them on holiday in term time 106 JULY 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

“This might be the last summer holidays that they actually want to hang out with me – so I want to be there! ” becomes even more problematic than it was before. Not simply to save money, we have sometimes elected to holiday in term time, because all my work is during the term breaks. (Start turning it down and you might not get asked next year).

But goodness me, the level of dread involved in taking the children out of school is rather high; probably rightly so.

Well, whatever the consequences for future bookings, I am quite pleased with myself for saving up and taking a gamble... I know I am now rather privileged to have 5 weeks off with my children and although it means we will have to holiday in the UK, rather than the Virgin Islands and wait on upgrading the car – I know by their level of excitement that I'm doing the right

thing. Daughter is still only 10, so all she really wants is my time and attention... but even the often aloof son is actually looking forward to it just being the four of us (Husband can work whenever he wants so will also take time off). Son doesn't even mind going away without bringing a mate, or meeting up with another family – so pleased is he at the unusual situation of having me available.

I've just got to be careful it doesn't disappear before we get anything organised to actually 'do'. Time goes so fast and there's so much to distract us... operation Plan The Summer starts here!
