EDITOR’S FOREWORD

W

ELCOME to our August issue. As I write this, the sun is shining brightly across the Cotswolds hills - a clear sign that summer is

well and truly here... finally. I don’t know about you, but I can sometimes take living in the Cotswolds for granted. It’s only when I catch myself taking in my surroundings, especially when walking our dog amongst the vast idylic countryside, that I think how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country. What are your favourite parts, are there any hidden parts that you would care to share with us? This month, we take a closer look at Stow-on-the-Wold (Page 39). I adore this village, with its quintessential Cotswold shops, pubs and cobbled paving. I recall one frosty December, sheltering from the cold in one of the pubs, cosying up by the roaring fire and enjoying a delicious glass of red wine (to warm up, of course!). It was just divine. August also welcomes a new feature in our magazine; ‘Castaway Collection’ (Page 77). Here, Ellie Mainwaring reveals what her essentials would be, should she ever become stranded on a desert island. I admit, I struggled to narrow my choices down, what would you choose? Send us your ideas and we will Tweet and Facebook the most interesting ones! Rajasthan, India, is the destination for our journey across the seas this month. Join Lucy Garbutt (Page 78) as she tantilises our senses with her words that conjure up vibrant colours, culture and unforgettable experiences. I’ve been told that India is the closet example of another world that we, as Westerners could see - I’m sure those who have been would agree. As you well know, this feature always leaves me itching to jet away and see these magical sights for myself. Before I leave you, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to our website’s version of Carley’s, ‘What’s On’ guide, (www.cotswoldstyle.co.uk). With over 2,000 listings, you are sure to find endless amounts of things to do with friends and family. Do take a look when you get a moment and let us know what you think. Have a simply wonderful August and we will see you in September! Natalie Day, Editor editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

GROWING FOR GOLD

There was a gardening theme to Airthrie School’s Sports Day, this year. Just as well, considering their Special Guest was Garden designer and BBC TV Presenter, Chris Beardshaw. Mr Beardshaw, whose two daughters Lily and Florrie attend Airthrie School, was on hand to award the winners medals and cheer on all the children, as they took part in their annual event. As parents packed the sidelines, there were races for all ages to compete in. ‘Fun’ events for the children in the Nursery, ‘Themed’ relays for the Early Years and exciting sprints, together with the ‘Long Distance Challenge’, for the older children. With beautiful sunshine and just a quick shower of rain, it was the perfect day for pupils and plants alike.

Exceeding Expectations We find out more about Amelia Roberts, Manager of Oxjam Cheltenham Takeover and her team to discover more about the events, their plans and the amazing success so far... Born and raised in Cheltenham, Amelia Roberts has been in the event planning business since the age of sixteen; whilst knuckling down for her A-levels, she worked with a company called Kooler, who put on live music events in Cheltenham clubs and pubs. Since then, she has worked with countless people such as Jonathon Lipman Ltd and now, Oxjam. Amelia is the Manager for this years’ ‘Oxjam Cheltenham Takeover’. Her ambition for the event series is to make bold local statements whilst trying her best to create an amazing turnout. Oxjam is a volunteer-run, national festival of independent events, designed to raise money for the efforts of Oxfam; it not only supports the local music scene and encourages the community to actively get involved, but also to raise awareness and money. Fundraising teams around the country battle it out to be top of the ‘Oxjam leaderboard’, a place where Amelia and the team are keen to be! Amelia joined the Oxjam team because it gave her a great chance to utilise her skills and talents to aid those desperately in need, making a difference to the millions of people who live unfairly in poverty. The first event, an Auction of Promises held at the Daffodil restaurant in Cheltenham on 11 July, was an uncontested success, exceeding the target not just for the event alone, but for the whole years’ fundraising! Amelia wasn’t able to do this single-handedly though; her amazing team of five aided her greatly along the way; Fiona Stephens of The

” I hadn’t realised just how bad poverty is and however small the difference, I want to make it.”

Daffodil, Kelly Ramsay of apt marketing & pr, Rowan Burton of The Production Works, John Madden of Cheltenham Underground and volunteer Anna Borysewicz. Talking to Fiona Stephens who is currently Events Manager at Oxjam Cheltenham Takeover, she says “I got involved because Amelia came to me at The Daffodil with a proposal for the auction; an hour later Amelia and I realised how well we got along and she gave me the job. I accepted because I hadn’t realised just how bad poverty is and however small the difference, I want to make it.” The next upcoming event is The Chelt’n’Jam Bake Off on 17 August, which encourages hopeful bakers to enter their creations to be judged by experts in the field, including Xavier Pelloux – former Harrods wedding cake designer. As well as takeover, Amelia also runs her own event management company; she attended St Edward’s and Pate’s, and felt it was about time she gave something back to her hometown. From weddings to product launch parties, her company AmeliaSophy can accomplish anything you throw at them. They also offer a unique “Proposal Service” for all you men out there, hoping to pop the question to your leading lady – flash mobs, hot air balloon rides... you name it! MARKET COMMENT After a frenetic and fast moving spring market, general stock levels are at the lowest we have seen for some years within most property sectors, whist the demand for quality housing stock in and around Cheltenham is at the highest levels we have seen since pre 2007. As a result of this renewed vigour in the market the Government along with the Bank of England are making some significant steps towards trying to slow the market down, where in particular London has seen yet further extraordinary growth over the past 12 months. Measures such as the introduction of the mortgage market review (MMR) has meant a far more ‘forensic’ look at applicants spending patterns and as a result the process of buying a property with a mortgage has been slowed dramatically.

people focus on holidays, sunshine and beaches. However, the stats show that this is unfounded, last year the Knight Frank App for iPad had a 65% increase in usage over the school summer holidays, so in fact this may be a period when people feel they have a little more time to consider their house move.

With the summer now upon us, one could be forgiven for thinking that the market will take a seasonal downturn as

“WE FEEL IT’S AS MUCH ABOUT PEOPLE AS IT IS ABOUT PROPERTY.”

Your Estate Agent We catch up with Paul Adkins of Adkins Estate Agents in Cirencester… Tell us about Adkins Estate Agents; when did you set up the business and what is your background and where do you cover? We are an independent family business. My wife and I handle all enquiries, valuations and viewings. Adkins Estate Agents officially launched on the 1st March this year, previously I was director of a successful local property development and contracting business. We added to our qualifications, having passed the level 3 technical course in residential sales endorsed by the NFOPP and recognised by the NAEA (national association of estate agents). We now cover Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds.

Have you always been based in Cirencester? We lived in Crudwell, near Malmesbury, for 12 years until two and a half years ago when we moved to Cirencester after

34 AUGUST 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

having our third child. We loved village life but felt that there would be more opportunities for us as a family in this beautiful town of Cirencester.

and we regularly update our website and Facebook page with the latest information to assist in the process.

What type of estate agent would you like to be renowned for? We are ‘YOUR ESTATE AGENT’ and as we are a small family business, we are able to provide a more personal approach and service. We are always available for advice or a friendly chat. We would like to be renowned for first Class customer service and being there for our clients when they need us most.

Do you have any top tips for those looking to sell their home and likewise, wanting to buy? For those wanting to sell, the best bit of advice is to make sure your home is clean and tidy for the photos and viewings, For those looking to buy, have a shortlist of requirements but be realistic as it maybe that you are not able to find exactly what you are looking for, there may need to be a compromise somewhere.

What type of properties do you have on your books? We have a great selection of properties at the moment including: family homes, period properties and holiday homes.

What would your dream client be? Our dream client is somebody with the same passion for property as us and with the same commitment to communication.

It must be satisfying being able to find people a home; is there a particularly memorable one? We get satisfaction assisting all our clients. We recently helped a couple find their dream home in Bibury, they are settling into village life nicely, which is very rewarding.

How can customers find out more about what you have to offer? We can be contacted anytime on our office line or mobile. Additionally, there is further information on our website. We are also easy to find on property portals such as Rightmove, Zoopla and Primelocation. Our Citroen DS3 enhanced with bright and dynamic branding can often be seen around town and local villages.

For those who are rather skeptical about the property market, what would you say? Don't worry! Do your homework and choose your agent wisely, we recommend that if your considering buying or selling that you use an agent that is a member of the NAEA and The Property Ombudsman. Adkins is a member of both associations,

Stow-on-the-Wold

Step into Stow-on-the-Wold Beth Mahoney experiences the quintessential market town of Stow… Balanced on top of an 800 foot hill, Stow is renowned for its rich historic heritage. Of course, many Cotswold towns are, yet this particular area has been witness to many historic events... During the Middle Ages, The Cotswolds were known throughout Europe as the source of some of the very best wool, with many Cotswold Abbey’s and Monasteries raising large flocks of the sought-after native breed known as the ‘Cotswold Lion’, a rather large breed of sheep with long golden fleeces. At the height of The Cotswold Wool industry, Stow became famous for holding huge annual fairs, where as many as 20,000 sheep were sold at one time.

During the English Civil War, Stowon-the-Wold became famous for its location at the meeting point of many major Cotswold roads, which both royalist and parliamentary forces would frequently travel along, subsequently becoming a tourist attraction – and still is today. Along with his royalist forces, King Charles visited Stow a few times, once spending the night in a local Inn before continuing his travels. Eventually, both royalist and parliamentary forces crossed paths in March 1646. As a result, this quaint

market town provided the setting for the very last battle of the English Civil War. Today, testifying to the town’s historic heritage, Stow’s large market square, complete with an ancient cross at one end, and the town’s old stocks at the other, is a truly impressive sight; surrounded by an old elm tree and an elegant array of glorious Cotswold town houses. As many of you will know, Stow-onthe-Wold is filled with fine antique shops; boutiques; gift shops; art galleries and a selection of cafés, bars and pubs. If you haven’t yet stepped into Stow, why not make time this summer to indulge in a spot of shopping, enjoy some lunch, or to simply soak up some historic heritage.

Once Upon a Time… Francesca Wylde reviews The Old Stocks Hotel in Stow For many of us, fairy tales play a central part in our imaginations as children. Even as we grow up, the idea of stepping into a favourite fairy tale setting appeals to our inner child – whether we are now in our early teens or mid-fifties. That feeling of escapism is precisely what captivated me as I entered the village of Stow-on-the-Wold. The fantastic beauty of this medieval village overwhelmed me. The thatched walls of old houses and even the penal stocks that still stand since the 17th century, allowed me to live the fantasy of a fairy tale. After parking the car, considering it is peak season for visitors the allimportant parking space was not very hard to locate, we went to investigate The Old Stocks Hotel where we would be spending our evening. The village’s beauty of a bygone era was not forgotten inside the hotel, as it so often is. The staff greeted us, and being a firm believer that first impressions are everything, this one was truly great. As we were shown to our room I was

surprised by the size of the room. It comfortably accommodated a double bed, en-suite and lounging area. Despite the hotel being over 500 years old, the modern essentials were not overlooked. The homely touches were there too with homemade shortbread biscuits, which were polished off very quickly. Having been to my fair share of badly kept hotels this one does not belong on that list. The sheets were immaculately kept and fit for a princess. Everything was tidy and not a dust particle in sight. The bathroom was also cleaned to perfection and I could not find fault. At about 7pm we were treated to dinner, beginning outside in the secret garden with drinks. The garden was beautiful and full of flowers along with fairy lights. After talking to the new mangers, who were very friendly and explained about all of the refurbishments that are taking place

under their new management, and basking in the sun we went inside to eat our dinner. I started with homemade soup of the day, which was cream of vegetable; it was a lovely and healthy way to start the meal, maybe minus the massive amount of lentil beans. For the main I had Three Gloucestershire Old Spot sausages and creamy mashed potato, priced at £9.95 and my mum had the roasted chicken supreme priced at £15.95.They were both lovely and the locally sourced meat made a real difference. We had a chat with Chris, the new head chef, in the morning and he explained how he had revamped the menu and made close relationships with the local food producers to ensure the best food possible. Overall, it truly is a magnificent building, only improved by the welcoming and chatty staff. With the new refurbishments and management at The Old Stocks Hotel I am very excited to see how it will improve and bring in more costumers to get a taste of the medieval town with the comfort of a homely hotel. CELEBRATING YOUR SCHOOLS’ SUCCESSES ACROSS GLOUCESTERSHIRE

BEAUDESERT PARK SCHOOL Countryside calls to London families Beaudesert Park School has been busier than ever recently, and will start this school year with four different year groups full, and waiting lists in place. The co-ed prep school on the edge of Minchinhampton Common incorporates a pre-prep and nursery, and has over 420 pupils aged 3-13. Staff have been trying to pinpoint the exact reason behind the surge of admissions which resulted in them having to reluctantly turn some families away. Headmaster, James Womersley, commented; “Beaudesert has proved popular for many years with families looking to swap the hullabaloo of London for a country life and education. But this year the number of people contacting us about places for 2014 was higher than ever. We never like to let a family down, but equally, we are very focussed on providing a

high quality all-round education which includes small class sizes. We already cater for over 400 children, and there is a limit to our total pupil role.” Beaudesert’s next Open Morning is on Friday 17th October 9.30 – 12noon.

THE KING’S SCHOOL, GLOUCESTER For for King’s and Queen’s! For parents seeking to nurture their child’s talent, a visit to The King’s School, Gloucester, is a must. With around 520 girls and boys aged three to eighteen it is the leading Independent Day School in the area. Set within the Cathedral grounds it offers an inspiring setting and provides a special sense of identity and powerful community unlike any other.

Academic excellence, small class sizes and outstanding pastoral care are provided throughout the school, plus the King’s Junior School is enhanced by the arrival of their new Headteacher, Mrs Anne Haas. For the past 10 years Anne has taught at Rendcomb College Junior School as Deputy Head, but she can't wait to start at the King's in September. “It will be a great privilege to work in a school with such a rich history, interested and engaged pupils, supportive parents and a hardworking teaching team,” said Anne. Monday to Friday a varied academic and extra-curricular programme is presented, with a vibrant culture of endeavour and scholarship, which has flourished since the foundation of the school in 1541. Come and discover what is waiting for your child at their next Open Morning, Saturday 18th October, 10am – 12pm. RENDCOMB COLLEGE, CIRENCESTER Roland Martin, Headmaster has been in post now for three years, he explains how his time has gone... As an old Rendcombian, returning after 12 years at Eton as an English teacher and Houseparent, I felt some sense of returning home; as a new Headmaster I felt an overwhelming sense of excitement and possibility. In my own experience, as pupil at the school, I have seen what it can do to unlock potential, to nurture and to support. As Headmaster, it is my job to take that experience and make it available to the next generation; to prepare them for the complex world in which they will live and work. This year’s Leavers include the academically talented,

CHELTENHAM COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL 21 years of Kingfishers (Pre-Prep) at Cheltenham College Prep School During an afternoon tea party, concert and exhibition, staff (past and present), current parents and past pupils truly united to commemorate and celebrate this significant milestone. Pupils, whilst wearing birthday badges and clutching balloons with pride, enjoyed a fun-packed afternoon of activities including face painting, disco dancing, circus skills and a bouncy castle. Kyle Stovold, past pupil and current teacher at Cheltenham College reflected on his time at Kingfishers, stating: “From humble beginnings as a green grocer, building

alongside gifted musicians, artists, sportsmen and women and a student theatre company taking their own production to Edinburgh Festival. They have shown initiative, common sense and a great sense of purpose: they are shining examples of what Rendcomb is all about. In September we will be joined by new pupils with new talents and I look forward to the new school year and to all that it will bring. www.rendcombcollege.org.uk

It is fantastic that Kingfishers has gone from strength to strength and is continuing to thrive. Today has been great and it’s wonderful to see many familiar faces.” Rachael Buttress, Head of Kingfishers said, “The children have worked so hard and were very keen to show our visitors what Kingfishers has become. It was super to welcome back some of our old pupils and I hope that our little ones will treasure this day among their memories of Cheltenham College Prep School”. AIRTHRIE SCHOOL Airthrie is an “Outstanding School” – OFSTED May 2014 Airthrie prides itself on the very high standards of care and individual attention provided for every pupil. Highly conscientious teachers plan lessons, carefully ensuring that thought is given to the learning style and capacity of each child. A positive happy approach with constant encouragement means that pupils enjoy school, display

motivation and experience a wide spectrum of subjects both in and outside the classroom. An added advantage is regular use of the excellent Ladies College sporting and swimming facilities, by all pupils from approximately 51/2 years. It is therefore no surprise that children between 3 and 11 years become successful, achieving students by the time that they progress to a variety of senior schools often having gained multiple scholarships and or Grammar school places. The recent OFSTED inspection confirmed this by awarding 'Outstanding' in all 5 judgements: • Overall Effectiveness • Achievement of Pupils • Quality of Teaching • Behaviour and safety of Pupils • Leadership and Management

Chic Not Shabby Left: Clanfield Sofa – www.wesley-barrel.co.uk – POA Below: Gilt gold porters chair - www.this-home.co.uk – £949

Rachel Vincent reveals how we can create something new out of the old... I’m sure you have heard the term, ‘shabby chic, be mentioned frequently in recent times. Yet, if you’re looking to achieve a truly authentic shabby, yet gloriously chic period feel to your home, you have to start thinking ‘Grand’ not ‘Brand’. It’s all about achieving a lived in, yet contemporary look to your home; creating a space that’s full of beautiful things from a bygone era that have been loved, often well made rather than mass produced. Under the hammer… So, where to begin? Head straight for the local auction house where you will hopefully find a treasure trove of period goodies, the key is to look for pieces that appeal to you in their shape, proportion or style as you can do wonders with some wire wool and wax or a tin of eggshell paint so make your search about what please the eye and with a little imagination and a trip the DIY store you can transform some often inexpensive yet good quality pieces into some true period gems. My all time favourite auction house is ‘Lots Road Auction House’ in Londons World’s End, just off the Kings Road. It’s a haven for just about anything and everything and there’s two live auctions every Sunday so worth the trip up to town. www.lotsroad.com Auction houses are also a great place to pick up some quirky artwork- again if the picture or even just the frame appeals then go for it and look to replace the element you don’t like. It’s all about buying what you love – so whether its

oversized antique gilt frame or a traditional but beautifully designed umbrella stand that would look fantastic sprayed silver be brave and think about what it could become rather than what it currently is.. Try The Cotswold Auction Company who have sites in both Cirencester and Cheltenham www.cotswoldauction.co.uk Are you sitting comfortably? Re-upholstering can be an expensive exercise but if you find a classic piece it could be well worth the money. A sumptuous George Smith Sofa or an original Chesterfield can look fantastic when upholstered in contemporary velvets or tweeds. You will also end up with an exceptional high quality sofa that will last you for decades to come. One of the country’s best upholsterers, Stephen Perkins, has his workshops in Cirencester and creates amazing, sympathetic restoration work, if you manage to get your hands on a gem www.stephenperkins.co.uk If buying new and looking for a quality piece that will stand the test of time, while complimenting a period room, try Wesley Barrell. Here you will find traditional period classics such as the Clanfield (pictured at top of page) which will be sure to add grace and elegance to any drawing room…

Illusions of Grandeur… Period properties can be easily transformed into beautiful homes, if not already so. There’s nothing more impressive than the preservation of original features – whether that be intricate plasterwork or beautiful oak panelling – they themselves create the stage and the furniture and accessories you place are simply there to showcase the natural existing beauty of the room. Farrow and Ball are a paint manufacturing company who have branched off into selling wallpapers, fabrics and painted furniture. I am a committed fan and think I have used pretty much every colour over the years in my own and clients’ homes. ‘Calke Green’ is a colour based directly on a cleaned version of the breakfast room at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire. It’s especially stunning when used to create a warm and intimate dining space. ‘Orangerie’ is inspired by the artistic style of the early 18th century, which is bursting with extravagant detail and would look sensational in both a small or large space If used sparingly, it can also create interest and texture. Remember to remain true to yourself Follow your instincts – a home is meant to feel just that – a home. Don’t feel pressured into purchasing items that fit the criteria of ‘period’. Go with what you like and make it your own. Besides, as Dorothy once said, ‘There’s no place like home’… I couldn’t agree more. COTSWOLD STYLE AUGUST 2014 55

THE SWEETEST OF PEAS Our media horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has just finished working as Assistant Producer on The Great British Garden Revival for the BBC. With a little more time on her hands this month, she turns her attention to a classic blossom that has much to thank our county for.... s the summer holiday M5 motor escape is in full swing and our Gloucestershire air turns a little fumy on a Saturday morning, we are equally engulfed by the fragrant fumes of lathyrus odoratus, or to you and I, the scintillating sweet pea. Is there any fragrance to beat this annual beauty? The name odoratus gives you a head start on the nasal nourishment heading your way. It’s almost too much to bear........ It is a 17th Century monk by the name of Cupani that we have to thank for their introduction to Britain and sweet pea ‘Cupani’ is still by many considered the best you can buy. The bi-colour lavender and wine colour is stunning and the fragrance is sweet pea at its best. However it’s not the largest of flowers and Gloucestershire can lay claim to the man that took sweet peas to another level! Dr Henry Eckford was working for Dr. Sankey of Sandywell Park near Cheltenham and it was during this time that he introduced larger more impressive flowers. These were known as Grandiflora blooms, still retaining the amazing fragrance of the originals. Following hot on the heels of the Grandifloras came the Spencer sweet peas, almost as if they were straight out of the horticultural hair dressers with their identifiable new wave. It’s a flower that has been celebrated and competed over across the country for years, with the Daily Mail famously holding a competition in 1911 to find the best bunch of sweet peas, with a staggering £1000 prize! We are still celebrating this flower in our county with a show dedicated to their beauty.

A

hedgerows on your approach from Bishops Cleeve. If only someone could breed scent into the perennial sweet pea! Back to the knock out scent annuals: a lovely recent introduction and definitely not to be boiled in a teapot, is ‘Earl Grey’ – patriotic in red, white and blue dappling and beautifully fragranced. You can’t go wrong with ‘Black Knight’ – rich velvet dark maroon, over 100 years old but still looks as fresh as a daisy (note to self: maybe avoid this phrase in the presence of the bloom himself, the last thing we want is a pea with a personality complex)! “IS THERE ANY FRAGRANCE The key to success is rich TO BEAT THIS ANNUAL soil, so add plenty of organic matter to give you a healthy BEAUTY? WHERE CAN I GET...? Q

Kelly James offers her expert advice for our interior dilemmas

I have recently seen a welsh blanket in a second hand shop but would prefer to buy a new version, can you tell me where to buy them?

A

Cold at night sell a selection of new welsh blankets that are woven in a tradition local welsh mill. Prices start from £220. www.coldatnight.co.uk

Q

I’m looking for a simple and easy to clean flooring for my kitchen that’s suitable for small children to crawl on but also looks stylish?

A

I would recommend either vinyl or rubber flooring as it’s easy to wipe clean and is a smooth surface for young knees to crawl on. The large selection of colours can make the choice difficult to make, something bright or classic? The Colour Flooring Company has a great selection www.colourflooring.co.uk

Q

My daughter likes rabbits and would like to have rabbit wallpaper in her bedroom, can you recommend something not too childlike but still fun?

A

This wallpaper from Rockett St George (www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk) is not only fun and very cool but it’s also magnetic so she can stick other pictures to her wall.

Q

I’m looking to decorate my bathroom in a monochrome theme; can you suggest black flooring that is suitable for under floor heating?

A

Hexagon tiles are a very current shape, walls and floors (wallsandfloors.co.uk) stock a matt black porcelain tile at £89.40 per sq m. Mix these with white wall tiles and sanitary ware to create a monochrome style!

Q

I’m looking for a local supplier that can supply and fit wooden doors, I would like to have the option to separate my living room from the dining room. Can you recommend?

A

I have used ATC (www.atcfloors anddoors.co.uk) based in Tivoli, Cheltenham and found them to be very knowledgeable, offer competitive prices and can also fit the doors for you. They would be my first port of call.

Surtees SPEAKS... Including why Dry Cleaners love to humiliate you and the trials and tribulations of pre-holiday trauma o it’s August and holiday time, and I’m hoping like me, you’re reading this on a sunny beach in Biarritz (and not crying over your cappuccino in Waitrose). As I smile and lie back on my sunbed, I’m the epitome of relaxed. If only you could have seen me last week. It all started with the curse of the cases, when I realised (yet again) that my suitcase is so old, it’s half my luggage allowance even when empty, bringing a whole new definition to packing light. No problem – I simply jettison the Alpha Scot’s shoe collection in order to stuff in more sequined tops for a “just in case millionaire yacht scenario”. Next stop, the dry cleaners – or as I prefer to call them, Public Humiliation Stores. “What is this stain?” they chide, as if cleaning wasn’t the purpose of their profession. As they gingerly hold your garments up to the light and wrinkle

S

”WHAT IS IT ABOUT GOING ON HOLIDAY THAT TURNS ME INTO A NAZI CLEANING OBSESSIVE? MY HOME IS NOT IMMACULATE. MOST DAYS I COME HOME AND IT’S IN AN ACCEPTABLE STATE – LIVED IN. ”

their noses in disgust, you cower before their might, signing disclaimers that you expect absolutely nothing from them and profusely apologising for having the nerve to bring them an actually stained garment. Packing and cleaning organised, that just leaves the house to sort. What is it about going on holiday that turns me into a Nazi cleaning obsessive? My home is not immaculate. Most days I come home and it’s in an acceptable state – lived in. But throw the chance of a few nights away on the Costa del Sol and you’d think I had an imminent visit from Kimye. Floors must be scrubbed, freezers defrosted, beds changed and laundry basket set to be empty at all times. Husband and kids skulk around the house wearing weird combinations of hooded parkas and tatty gym kit

because everything is in the wash/has just been washed/ is in the case (even though, as we’ve already established, I’m packing light). Then there’s security, and that’s Alpha Scot’s cue to turn all Guantanamo bay on me: Who knows our key code, what month did I give the Czech cleaners a set of keys, how many people know we’re going to be away, have I tested the alarm code recently? (to which the answer is of course is no, which is why even though the alarm has functioned perfectly for 50 weeks of the year, the day before we leave it goes off every 15 mins). Joy for the neighbours. Departure Day finally dawns. Like a Buddhist monk I’ve been chanting “passports, tickets, money” for the past week, so I’m already in a Zen like state when I get to the airport. But the magic does happen. After you’ve confirmed that you’ve packed your own case (who ever says no?) had your shoes scanned for weapons of mass destruction and HM Customs have checked your 30ml of Pantene for traces of Semtex, the collective mood suddenly lifts and you’re in that happy holiday bubble, where money cares evaporate and life is rosy. Or should I say rose. Alpha Scot has just called me from the bar - “fancy a wee glass of wine Sweetheart?” he asks. It’s 9am. He won’t be so happy when he finds out I’ve replaced all his shoes with my dry cleaning……Happy Hols everyone.

I would love to hear from you! Please write to me, Amanda Toner (maiden name Surtees!) via editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

and shelter to our beautiful birds. My favourite part of the Conservation Area though is the glassfronted beehive where you can sit and watch our 50,000-strong colony busily working away for their queen bee. As they’re responsible for pollinating lots of crops, they’re a vital part of our food chain. We have lots of fantastic information for fact-fiends as well. For example, when a bee has found a really fruitful patch of pollen, it will fly back to the hive for back up. All of the other bees will remove the pollen from their legs (so there’s plenty of room to ‘stock up’) and the bee will perform a ‘waggle dance’. The direction the bee moves in and ‘points’ at tells the other bees where they’ll find the pollen and the length of the dance signifies how long it will take to fly there! Isn’t nature absolutely fantastic? We want to get as many people as possible involved with the area and enjoying the brilliant outdoors this summer, come rain or shine. One of my teammates, Laura (fondly nicknamed ‘Laura the Explorer’) is a fountain of knowledge about all things conservation and is the brains behind a lot of the activities in this corner of the Park. She’ll be running fantastic Nature Weekends throughout the summer holidays, with pond-dipping and guest speakers, as well as bug house PHOTO: ROB WHEATMAN

here’s a corner of the Farm Park that some of you – even recent visitors – may not be aware of,. it is a beautifully tranquil Conservation Area, hidden away in the far right hand corner, at the end of our Woodland Walk. It was opened in May last year (by none other than the lovely Ellie Harrison) and the transformation it’s taken over the seasons is just staggering. One of our aims on the Farm is to show our visitors what we are doing to benefit our beautiful landscape. Over 75% of the total land in Britain is used for agriculture, so we have a responsibility to make sure that our 650 hectares makes room for our wonderful local wildlife, helping to sustain numbers. As we have been granted a Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) from Natural England, we can carry out some really worthwhile projects. The Conservation Area of the Park gives us the space we need to tell visitors more about this work and show the ‘softer’ side to modern farming. It also gives ideas for some great miniprojects people can take on at home. This corner of the Park houses our ‘Bug Hotel’, where we have created the perfect space for creepy crawlies. There’s also a natural pond that’s really starting to come into its own this year, with dragonflies, newts and frogs. We also have lots of different types of nesting boxes and feeders to offer food

building and sunflower seed planting, so that you can take a little bit of the Farm Park home with you. I know lots of children have bug projects at school so this is a perfect way to encourage them to take an interest. My daughter Lola is bug mad! We also sell some great items in the shop; magnifying boxes and different kits to help identify all the species to be found. The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. Nature weekends will be taking place throughout the summer holidays, 19th July – 31st August. For more information visit www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk. ASTAWAY Ellie Mainwaring will be delving into minds of true Cotswoldians in the next few issues, exploring the contents of their suitcase if castaway. Here are her choices... Where in the world will you choose to be a castaway and why?

Manhattan, New York! I’m probably bending the rules a little here, as it’s not your traditional idea of a Desert Island. Nonetheless it is the most phenomenal place and has such a wonderful vibe. Fashion gets me ticking and New York is an epicenter for great design and style – Patricia Fields, Betty Halbreich, Diane Von Furstenberg, Marigay McKee and so many of the fashion greats come together in this iconic city. I have been fortunate enough to visit New York a number of times, and each time I discover something different – a new street, view or restaurant – but I also love returning to my favourite places: Central Park, Greenwich Village, Buddakan – the list is endless! Jo Malone’s signature scent, Pomegrate Noir. For me, this totally encapsulates the smell of home and my Mum in particular. My Godmother – a very dear friend of the family, who is sadly no longer with us - introduced her to the fragrance as a 50th birthday gift and ever since my Mum has almost exclusively worn that scent. Smells are so evocative of memories, so this would be my little way of taking a piece of my mum with me to the island. What fragrance will you take?

You can take the entire works of one musician to your desert island, who will it be?

Well, it would have to be Sam Smith, in particular his début album, In The Lonely Hour. I absolutely adore the record and have listened to it back-to-back, non-stop since it was released. The album is a great mix of everything – gospel, soul, and house. The lyrics are also so beautiful and Sam Smith is such a talent. I imagine being isolated on an island would be something of an emotional rollercoaster so I think it would take me through that with a song for every mood. Pepper, my Miniature Dachshund. He’s my absolute pride and joy. We have somewhat of a menagerie of animals in the Mainwaring household: Alfie and Daisy our two Bengal cats, Henry, the floppy black Labrador and pampered pooch, goldfish and my brother has his own Gecko and then there’s Pepper, the newest edition. Pepper would have to be my choice as she would be small enough to snuggle in with me at night and keep me company. What animal or pet would you take?

Name one possession you would take with you and one to leave behind for a loved one? Take...

Floral Headband For my 21st birthday, my Dad and I had a joint 21st and 60th Birthday party at our home in the Cotswolds. We decorated a barn outside our house with fairy lights, paper pompoms, fresh flowers and candles and even had a vintage ice cream van arrive – complete with traditional musical jingles. In true ‘Mainwaring’ family style, 30 minutes before guests were due to arrive, the heavens opened and the marquees were blown away by a gust of wind. It will always remind me of laughing through the wind and rain and still having a great time with friends. Alex Monroe Bumblebee – This was a gift given as a congratulations present while I was working at Harrods. I spent some time last Easter working at the Knightsbridge store in the Buying Department for Menswear, Millinery and Luxury Collections. It was incredible to get to see inside a brand that has excited me since being a young girl. I wear my bumblebee every day and get so many comments on it. Leave Behind...

A TASTE OF INDIA’S FABLED MAHARAJAS AND SHIMMERING MAUSOLEUMS

A

Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt is left wanting another taste of India as culturally, artistically and scenically it is a feast for the senses and is one of the most diverse, dynamic and exciting destinations on earth journey in India is always unforgettable, but no other destination on earth can capture the romance, euphoria, rise and fall of human kind with such celebration as Rajasthan. The first experience of India holds an undeniable allure similar to that of tasting your first glass of champagne.

It’s an opinion of taste and everyone has to try it even if once is enough! Your first visit can range from a ‘Krug’ to ‘Prosecco’ moment. Just like Champagne, India was created under intense pressure, is associated with royalty and the uppermost echelons of society, holds huge mystique and intrigue, has depth and character and can

leave you with a light and elegant finish. On the other hand it can leave you with a hangover if you get your itinerary wrong! My first taste was arriving in Delhi as I plummeted head-on into the swirling energy, intense colours and exuberance of India’s largest city of over 20 million people. This was comparable to the cork popping and the bubbles fizzing and bursting out of the bottle. The ‘Krug’ moment for me was marvelling at one of the world’s greatest wonders located in Agra – the Taj Mahal. This stunning white marble mausoleum is one of the jewels of Muslim architecture and was built by griefstricken Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife and demonstrates a most remarkable token of love. The Taj is truly magnificent and as I wafted throughout the immense arched walls, cooling domed halls and ornate tomb chambers I became lost in its romance and imagined myself living as the ‘Chosen One of the Palace’. Visiting Rajasthan is to experience India’s ‘Land of the Kings’. The opulence of the Rajput Kings fuses with the Hindu love of exuberant décor, and today offers world-class heritage boutique hotels. Rajasthan is rich in history, with imposing forts, captivating Jain and Hindu temples and culture, creative art and flamboyant architecture. It is an intriguing region where India’s northern plains merge into the mighty Thar Desert. I would need the entire magazine to adequately describe my journey through Rajasthan so the following are some of my key highlights. Rattling by train from Delhi, I arrived into the beautiful Pink City of Jaipur. It is Rajasthan’s sprawling capital, with its ochre-washed palaces, fort and exquisite walled city at its heart and bustling

bazaars to explore. I spent days spellbound, lost in its extravagance. The scene on the streets is insane with tuktuks, traders, cars, buses, motorbikes, cows and the occasional ambling elephant, driven by a brightly coloured turban wearer, miraculously weaving in between each other in a medley of accepting chaos. Off-track, rural Rajasthan has interesting villages to visit en route where there are little known fort-palaces with panoramic views over colourful countryside and women displaying embroidered mirror-work clothing adorned with silver jewellery. It is the majestic lake city of Udaipur known as the most romantic city in Rajasthan that so enchanted me. Set on the shores of Lake Pichola, its streets are surrounded by beautiful palaces and framed with the backdrop of distant hills. I spent hours

ambling and ogling at the sights, smells and sensations of the most picturesque city imaginable. The narrow streets are a riot of colour, lined with shops, bazaars and markets ablaze with baskets of vibrant coloured produce, with stray cows meandering freely and helping themselves to vegetables. One morning I found myself at the ghats with the spectacle of women busy with their socialising and washing, wearing brightly patterned saris of all colours of the paint box. In my approach to the remote desert Citadel of Jaisalmer I had time-travelled to a 12th Century Kingdom. A shimmering vision of golden turrets, towers and battlements glowed like a mirage rising from the Thar desert. Inside the walls I wandered through a labyrinth of intricately decorated temples, palaces, streets, alleyways and

courtyards carved into the sandstone. Its idyllic medieval character now mixes with a vibrant community, shops, small hotels and restaurants and it is all the more enchanting. I can’t wait to reexplore the Citadel’s interior one day followed by a camel safari and a luxury tented camp experience – perhaps at The Serai next time! For me, Rajasthan is the ‘Krug’ of India and I can’t wait for another sip! Renew

& Re-energise

Our new beauty writer and makeup artist, Lucy Pearce of BooLou Make Up, reveals the secret to getting gorgeously glowing skin … As a makeup artist one of the most important things to me is the canvas I am working on – your skin. Skin condition is key to achieving a good makeup application. So, here are some great products and tips to help you get that beautiful skin base.

Exfoliation is one of the most importa nt steps in your skin care regime, it removes the buildup of dull, dead skin cells and help s to unblock your pores, in turn leaving your skin looking and feeling heathier. St Ives Apricot Scrub (£4) comes in three options for all skin types. Using it on dry skin before you shower will remove twice as much as using it on wet skin. You will see your skin brighten and glow beautiful ly within the first few uses.

I always recommend using serum instead of moisturiser in everyday life but especially before applying makeup. This is because serums are lovely and light and sink in to the skin much quicker than moisturisers do. Apply Clarins Double Serum (£55) to your face and neck and allow a few minutes for it to sink in before applying any makeup. It is a fabulous, awardwinning product and has so many great benefits including: anti-ageing, pore minimizing and skin tightening.

Have you have ever wondered why your lipstick is not going on smoothly A great lip balm is key to keeping or is looking patchy? Well, you are probably not your now beautifully smooth prepping your lips correctly. Lips are also skin and need lips in top condition. Apply exfoliating on a regular basis to ensure they are smooth and have Origins Drink Up the perfect base for your lipstick. Hydrating Lip Balm LUSH Lip Scrub (£5.50) is one of the best lip scrubs on the market, (£16) straight after made from completely natural ingredients you can even eat it. Use your exfoliating your lips, finger to scrub onto dry lips and rinse off, you will notice before bed every night and first thing in the your lips are smoother and more kissable! mornings. You can even use this as an alternative to lipstick or gloss as it comes in a variety of shades.

PERFECT PRINTS So it’s in full swing and what more could we want? Old Blighty’s done us well, we’ve had a sunny day or two, but all of this is nothing without the right tags on your gladrags. No, I’m not talking about designers, not this time. This time, it’s all about the prints... WORDS BY GRACE PARRY here should never be a right time of year for prints, but there’s just something about the summer months that just make them the right accessory. Whether it’s florals on your bikini, cutesy animal motifs or even exotic patterns, it’s difficult to imagine them working in any other way. August brings us the beautiful bridging in fashion where the summer sales are pretty much over and new lines start to take over. This, ladies, is known as prefall. Pre-fall gives us the beauty of summer styles with the warm and delicious colourings of the autumn winter lines. And do you know what the pre-fall styles love? That’s right, you’ve guessed it; prints. No much more than our beloved Karen Millen. Much less of a sun-dress, the kimono Karen Millen sleeves and structured silhouette scream style. We all know how well a stripe can work, but it’s time to ditch the classic Breton for something a little more magical and, after seeing this, wouldn’t you agree? As much as hanging on to the summer months can seem a little drastic, it’s oh so easy to achieve with fashion and especially with the right Ted Baker prints. When I say right prints, you must know I’m talking about Ted Baker. Ted Baker’s pastels, florals and all-round airy fabrics

T

are the ultimate in girly, summer prints. This clutch just says it all. For a print you can carry on through Autumn, look for brights with a bit of bite. French Connection have the most gorgeous collection of reds, yellows and greens against a nautical palette that will do the trick. Can’t you just imagine wearing this dress in August and October? Neutrals are also a must, especially when there’s so much scope to accessorise with pinks and oranges right now, then switching it up with reds and metallics to take you through the cooler months. You can even think dayto-night with this feather print Reiss number and that’s always Reiss a winner. Playful prints Oasis scream summer, but can always be kept back and enjoyed April to September as a treat, rather than be dragged through the darker days. Flamingos are fun and perfect for pairing with pastels. Can you see it now? This Oasis neck scarf teamed with pretty prints and your favourite denim cut offs

French Connec

tion

or a classic white sundress. And, as if by magic, prints could start from the bottom and be worked up, French Connection just read our minds. Scarf prints are always a classic and so easy to wear, pick out your favourite colour to dress and you’re good to go. Primary colours never looked so good! So where will you be starting this August? Feminine florals, bright blots or the cutest characters are all the rage, but whichever you choose, keep it classic and very much you.

Employees & Their Contacts

A

Darren Sherborne discusses termination restrictions and the effect of this on your business

sk an employment lawyer, and most will say that one sure sign that we are emerging from recession is the increase in work coming from employees jumping ship and taking work with them. In fact, chances are that those lawyers you ask have done it themselves. But mystery surrounds the extent to which an employer can stop this sort of thing, and yet every employer faced with losing business when a sales person or relationship manager leaves, wishes they had spent a little more time preventing this happening. The loss of customer contacts can be catastrophic. In my experience, a little horse sense doesn’t go amiss when recruiting. If a potential employee comes to you with a bucketful of your competitor’s customers and wants to dodge their obligations to their last employer, the chances are they will do the same to you when they go. It really should put an employer on notice that they need to get their own restrictions tied down tight. While a dry subject, the history of this is at least a little interesting. The courts don’t like post termination restrictions because we are a free country, free to work where we want and pursue any business endeavour that takes our fancy. After all, we abolished slavery over two centuries ago. It might be for this reason that employers think these restrictions don’t work. They are wrong, they do work, but they have to be drafted carefully with a view to the circumstances of the business and the employee. Generally you can’t stop an employee taking skills learned, or stuff that is in his head, but you can stop him taking unfair advantage for a period of time to give your own business a chance to keep the customer.

Darren Sherborne

“IF A POTENTIAL EMPLOYEE COMES TO YOU WITH A BUCKETFUL OF YOUR COMPETITOR’S CUSTOMERS AND WANTS TO DODGE THEIR OBLIGATIONS TO THEIR LAST EMPLOYER, THE CHANCES ARE THEY WILL DO THE SAME TO YOU WHEN THEY GO. ”

The latest case this year on the subject has given some helpful guidance to employers where they take on someone with an existing customer following. If you pay the employee a token sum (say £100) for his or her contacts and following, a sort of a goodwill payment, the courts are much more likely to favour the restriction on the basis that the employer has bought the contacts. This could apply equally to insurance salespeople as to hairdressers. (Incidentally, hairdressers are a common source of dispute over this sort of thing). I should add that contractual restrictions are not the only source of protection for the employer. For example, if an employee is a director they have a fiduciary duty to the company and can’t further their own interests over the company’s at least while they hold their directorship. (You may be surprised by the number of times directors have been caught out setting up in competition while still employed). Catch a director doing this and not only might damages be available, but also an account for profits. Basically the aggrieved company could take the money the employee makes as a result of their breach. It might not get the customers back of course, but it will certainly soften the blow and leave the errant director feeling thoroughly unprofitable. If you find yourself recruiting, give some thought to the protection of your business relationships at the outset, don’t leave it until you want the protection, it will then be too late. C2S Business Update Military campaign gains PM approval Words by Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Director of Circle2Success The Prime Minister recently hosted a reception in the gardens of No. 10 Downing Street for regulars, reservists, veterans, charities and employers who all gathered to celebrate a number of achievements across the armed forces covenant. The covenant seeks to recognise the debt owed to the armed forces for the sacrifices they make every day. At the reception, David Cameron welcomed everyone and particularly congratulated businesses on their achievements and he also launched the new Employer Recognition Scheme which saw a number of organisations acknowledged for the outstanding support they have provided, particularly to the reserves. The event also saw the two hundredth company to sign up to the Corporate Covenant. Gloucestershire based businesses have contributed significantly to this total with 25 companies having signed their respective companies up to support the armed forces and their families in just the past 8 weeks. More companies are signing up all the time. Gloucestershire businesses were represented by Suzanne Hall- Gibbins, from Circle2Success, which has been raising the awareness of the Covenant in the local business community. Suzanne said ‘it was a lovely evening. I was very proud to be invited and represent Gloucestershire businesses who have embraced the ideals of the Covenant. For many it is a visible badge of the things they already do and the support they already give. To date the Corporate Covenant has mainly

been supported by the larger companies but it’s the smaller and midsized businesses that can be flexible and who are growing so it’s important to get them +engaged.’ The Covenant is a voluntary pledge and consists of 3 pages that can be tailored by each company in terms of the support they are able to provide. Its powerful and emotional pledge is ‘We, the undersigned, commit to honour the Armed Forces Covenant and support the Armed Forces community. We recognise the value serving personnel, both regular and reservists, veterans and military contribute to our business and our country’. Paul Halfpenny, MD at Britannia said, ‘when we looked at our employees we found we already employ a few ex-military but we

Erin Sawyer answers your family questions Q

My former girlfriend of 10 years ended our relationship 9 months ago. Before we broke up, we were living in her house which she bought before we began dating, though I did pay toward the mortgage for a time. We have 2 children, aged 4 and 7. We had a somewhat unorthodox home life, in that my former girlfriend was the "breadwinner" while I reduced my working hours when our eldest child was born, and have looked after the children ever since. Now that we have split, I have moved out of the family home, but the children have stayed with their mother, and I see them 3 times a week during the day. I am living with my brother at the moment, but want to purchase my own property. I am trying to increase my working hours to increase my income, but my employer is not convinced my role needs to be expanded to support full time hours. My former partner has agreed to give me a lump sum to purchase my own property which amounts to 50% of the net equity in the family home, but I feel like I should have more than what she is offering me, because I have given up my career in deference to hers, and now I am struggling to get back into the workplace. Am I entitled to more?

A

Although I would need significantly more information about the history of your relationship with your former partner, and the current position in which you find yourself, generally speaking, people who have been in a long-term relationship with a cohabiting partner do not have any rights in relation to future income and capital needs save in respect of children of the family.

The way that the law stands at present, the only rights and obligations which former cohabiting partners may have as against their former partner relates only to children of the family, and, where appropriate in respect of assets which are either jointly owned between the former partners, or solely owned by one of the partners in the legal sense, but which the other partner has contributed toward in equity. In other words, if you have made a financial contribution to the property owned by your former girlfriend, you may be entitled to a proportion of the equity, the amount of which is to be assessed by the Court (or quantified by agreement). However, there are a number of factors which a Court would take

into account in attempting to quantifying any beneficial interest you may have in your ex-partner's property, to include the intentions of the parties during the course of the relationship in relation to your acquisition of an interest in her property, and the actual financial contributions made toward the property during the course of the relationship. You suggest that you should perhaps receive more than a sum equal to 50% of the net equity in the family home which you have been offered by your former partner, on the basis that you reduced your working hours raise the children of the family so that your former partner could progress her own career, and now you are unable to re-establish your role fulltime. Generally speaking, the legal position as matters stand at the moment does not allow the Court to consider contributions toward family life, i.e. looking after children, cooking and cleaning, as a means of acquiring an interest in a property owned by another party. Your former girlfriend is not likely to be ordered to financially compensate you for the fact that you reduced your working hours during your relationship, as the law stands at present.

Having said the above, a cohabitation rights bill has been presented to the House of Lords in June 2014, which, as presently drafted, would allow the Court to take into account various factors in assessing cohabitants' rights, to include foreseeable needs and income capacity. Thus, the proposed legislation would provide similar protection to cohabitants akin to that which is afforded to people who are married or in a civil partnership, though the present draft legislation does not suggest that income-related orders will be available to cohabitants, in the same way that married couples and those in civil partnerships are able to apply for orders for spousal maintenance. As the proposed legislation has only just been introduced to the House of Lords, it is some distance from being passed into law. The Falcon Inn Mark and Rachel Hopkins enjoy a midsummer dinner at the Painswick hotel... A warm summer evening, a beautiful little village nestling in the famous Cotswold Hills, a perfect English mid summers evening, a quintessential Cotswold village that is Painswick and dinner for two at the fabulous Falcon Hotel in the heart of its surroundings. As we arrived we were greeted by a relaxed but elegant atmosphere with a classy feel and look. Rachael and I were a little early so we made our way to the snug area of the bar. It was refreshing to see a large selection of tap, keg and bottled beer complementing a very well stocked top shelf of gins, vodkas, whiskies, brandy and many more. As our drinks were delivered we were shown to a delightful table set alongside a window offering stunning views of St Mary’s church with its famed 99 yew trees that stand proud as the centre piece of Painswick. It is said that every time a hundredth tree is planted it dies. Enjoying the view we were presented with the menu, which clearly demonstrates that the chefs and owner are passionate about food, with a wide variety of interesting and exciting offerings and a daily specials board full of treats to make your mouth water. We started with a refreshing sea food platter that included scallops, tiger prawns, and whitebait along with a fabulous crab and

shrimp mix in a parcel of smoked salmon all beautifully cooked and presented. We followed this with, for me the pork tenderloin served with a baked apple and stilton crumble and roast potatoes, and for Rachael the trio of lamb cutlets that were perfectly pink when cut with dauphinoise potatoes in a rich plush gravy, both dishes were accompanied with fresh garden vegetables. For dessert two very British classics a moist sticky toffee pudding served with a vanilla ice cream and a delightful selection of cheeses with homemade oat biscuits and bread served with fresh grapes and celery. We topped this all off with a cafeteria of fresh ground coffee. The food was full of flavour and

beautifully presented on the plate the service was warm and friendly with good advice offered if sort and our waitress was an absolute delight that was both knowledgeable about the food on offer at the Falcon Hotel the village and its surroundings. After dinner we moved to a small terraced area for an after dinner drink. The Falcon Hotel offers far more than dinner it has a lunch menu that expresses the same level of enthusiasm to its readers and on Sundays you can choose a traditional roast with all the trimmings or something from the A La Carte menu. The Falcon provides the perfect setting for a private function in the old stable block called the Shires with its own courtyard, ideal for small weddings and anniversary celebrations to corporate getaways. Live music events are frequent, there are Christmas and New Year parties, all this plus the 11 stylish bedrooms offering a warm welcome whichever room you book The Falcon Hotel Painswick gives a warm welcome to this small select establishment with a hilltop setting surrounded by beautiful countryside, it is as stylish as its surrounding and we can’t wait to go back. www.falconpainswick.co.uk

MEALS that HEAL Shelle Duffin experiences a different type of cookery course... have always been fortunate enough to eat whatever I like. Despite having to put endless, gruelling hours in at the gym to accommodate my healthy appetite and limit an ever-expanding waistline, my love for dairy, bread and all-things sweet continues. However, with respect to others, such pleasures can’t always be enjoyed. With a rapid increase in the number of people suffering from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and wheat intolerance, the ever-growing consciousness of a specific diet has led to a huge growth in commercial awareness. Supermarkets now offer a wide range of gluten and dairy-free alternatives, and a number of restaurants and cafes now provide gluten-free dishes and dairy-free drinks across their menus. However, when it comes to cooking up appealing alternatives in your own kitchen, culinary talent can easily yield. As a cook with a limited knowledge in this area, I was keen to expand my skills; with a growing number of family and friends with specific dietary requirements, I wanted to be able to cook them up a treat they could eat, allergies aside. Although the advance in commercial awareness has also generated a number of new cook books on the market, nevertheless when learning new skills it’s often beneficial to see it first-hand – and after all, we all love a good cookery demo. Therefore, I recommend that you attend one of Karen Maidment’s ‘Meals that Heal’ cookery courses. A renowned specialist in holistic lifestyle coaching, Karen’s extensive knowledge of practical nutrition and lifestyle management generates a high level of education, guidance and support, with her cookery course being true to its name. Thanks to her holistic approach, you feel relaxed and at ease from the moment you step into her kitchen. With a soothing herbal tea in hand, we sampled a freshly

I

baked chorizo, spinach and egg muffin; Karen’s option for a hearty breakfast to start the day – from her cook book ‘Meals that Heal’. We began with an insightful talk about the foods that cause negativity to the systematic functioning of our bodies, generating a bit of a reality check amongst us all on how some of the much-loved ingredients we enjoy on a daily basis can cause harm to our sensitive immune systems. Once I’d recovered from the momentary shock of the battering I’d bestowed upon my poor immune system over the years, we were each given a collection of recipes for the delicious dishes we would be making during the day. Throughout the course, Karen explained how the specific ingredients in each recipe remedied particular dietary issues, highlighting that despite having intolerances, there’s never

any need to compromise, and always an alternative. Being a day of learning new things, it was also one for trying new flavours, in particular, cow’s heart – in a burger! Although I am not one to shy away from eating offal it very rarely features on my menu of choice and heart was definitely a new one for me (and to my relief, quite a few others cooking around me). One of Karen’s ‘wild burgers’ is not your average quarter-pounder. Although, as she rightly explained, if we’re going to eat meat, we should respect the animal by using all of it, including the bones, which makes a very nutritious broth that is apparently very calming and soothing for the hormones. So with the freshly made wild burgers and sundried-tomato and caramelised onion flatbreads in hand, we lunched with wholesome salads overlooking a lake, adding to the relaxing vibe that was present throughout the entire ‘Meals that Heal’ cookery course. We spent the rest of the day making raw cacao and mulberry gooey cookies – a delicious and healthy alternative to chocolate chip – and strawberry shortcake grain-free muffins, all of which were ready to take home at the end of the day alongside a Wholefoods goody bag. It doesn’t matter whether you’re wheat or dairy intolerant, or if you’re just a keen cook, I would definitely recommend you attend a ‘Meals that Heal’ cookery course to broaden your knowledge and skills in the area of gluten and dairy free cooking. Karen is an enthusiastic teacher who offers an inspiring insight into nutritional eating and how it can lead to a healthier lifestyle. The next ‘Meals That Heal’ cookery course will be held on Saturday 4th October at The Foodworks Cookery School, near Cheltenham. www.purebodybalance.co.uk

They produce a wonderful French Malbec that truly represents this grapes’ heritage and history, named Gouleyant. It is a deliciously deep and dark wine with supple and expressive with soft, elegant tannins. Gouleyant has flavours of blackcurrant, elderberry, plump raisin and black cherry with smoky notes of violets, cocoa and liquorice. Having such good tannic structure Gouleyant is ideal with steaks, roast duck, goose, beef and lamb. It also pairs wonderfully with slow cooked or braised meats, hearty casseroles, smoky Hungarian goulash, tagines, rich beef curries, osso buco and aged hard cheeses. Beautifully balanced with great structure, I believe Gouleyant is a winner. I am convinced you will think so too. Its exceptional quality and value speak for themselves. Gouleyant Malbec, Cahors 2012 is available from Bordeaux-Undiscovered at £9.99 a bottle.

Summer SNACKING O

Summer holidays. Healthy eating. They don't go together very well, do they? At this time of year, I get asked this question on a daily basis: the kids are home for the summer, how do I avoid eating strawberry laces and ice creams every day? Is it even possible?

BY LUCY DENVER

f course my answer is always yes, it’s possible. And I’m going to tell you how. (Hint: it’s doable, but like most things worth having it does take a bit of willpower. Good things come to those who work hard!) Kids coming home from school or university for the summer can spell all kinds of trouble for your usual routine and what types of food you have in the house. Don’t let your children’s penchant for midnight cheese toasties and multiple Mars bar at 4pm send you off course! All you need are a few healthy snacks to keep you from temptation. These are some of the things I snack on and can personally recommend for taste as well as nutrition. BOUNCE BALLS Most snacks tend to be carbohydrate-based rather than protein, but protein fills you up for longer and is essential in a balanced diet. Try these for a grab-and-go snack you can keep in your handbag. Bounce Balls from Whole Foods Cheltenham.

EVERYTHING BUT THE COW Dairy can be an irritant in your diet so ditch it and instantly feel the benefits! EBTC smoothies are packed full of fresh fruit and soy protein to fill you up and get some of your five-a-day at the same time. From Whole Foods Cheltenham and Holland & Barratt.

GRAB SOME NUTS A handful of nuts is the best way to get some energy on board whilst being kind to your waistline. Yes, they have fats in them, but fats are essential (for example your body cannot absorb vitamins A, K, D or E without fat in your system) so munch away! Roasted almonds with paprika are amazing, cashews are great and walnuts make a great snack too. Don’t go crazy and eat a 500 gram bag in one sitting, and go for the unsalted ones, but definitely don’t overlook nuts as a great snack option. From Natural Choice (online) or East and West Foods.

For more recipe ideas from breakfast to bedtime, check out the born2move website: www.born2move.co.uk and click on the 'Recipes' tab.

BUTTER UP This isn’t a great snack if you’re on-the-go as you’ll see, but if you have a spare ten minutes grab an apple (Pink Lady or Golden Delicious work well) and a jar of Meridian Almond Butter. Slice the apple and dunk it in the almond butter. Heaven on a plate, and it’s good for you. Meridian Almond Butter (or grind your own!) from Whole Foods Cheltenham. TIME FOR TEA Often when you crave food, you’re actually thirsty. Keep a selection of teas close to hand: they are good for more than just helping you stay hydrated! Tulsi – a trio of basil leaves great for destressing and controlling cortisol levels, which if elevated can lead to fat storage. I know basil tea sounds weird, but trust me it works. Liquorice – if you get sugar cravings, drink this! Worth trying even if you don’t like liquorice as the taste is quite different. Peppermint – this will calm your digestive system and is a great one for after a heavy meal. Chamomile and Lavender – perfect just before bedtime or anytime you need to relax. Lemon – a slice of lemon in hot water is great for helping create an alkaline environment in your body. Yes, I know lemon is acidic, but in the body it’s alkaline and will help counteract any acidic irritants in your diet, so your tummy will be much happier. If you’d prefer a cold drink, grab a bottle of Liquid Chlorophyll to add a hint of mint to your water and to aid digestion. COTSWOLD STYLE AUGUST 2014 117

Creating Memories This month, Shane Duff considers all of the activities available for children during the summer holidays

The summer holiday are here and the sun is out... hopefully! What do parents do with their children for the six-week school break? Families will be setting off across the country and around the world bringing smiles to the faces of loved ones whilst creating memories to recall in the years ahead. Realistically, this may not be an option for the whole of the six weeks summer holidays, as parents cannot generally take that amount of time off all at once. Local providers of sports, entertainment and extra curricular activities get very busy at this time, creating an opportunity for ‘child care’ and somewhere for children to go whilst parents are at work. I run soccer camps out of All Saints Academy in Cheltenham on every day of the school holidays to provide a service to these children and parents. I look back on the years when I had school holidays and wish I’d the opportunity to do something similar. I feel like an old man thinking that kids these days don’t know they’re born but they really don’t. What more can they ask for? State of the art facilities to play football on, the chance of an injury is massively reduced with the long grass astro turf and one place to go to see all of their friends. Not like the distressed concrete driveways that I used to run around on and graze my knee every

second day, pulling off a slide tackle. The best thing to come out of the camps are the social side of them. Children can turn up not knowing anybody and be really shy, but before long you can see friendship groups forming into formidable bonds. One particular boy goes to a school out of the area and does not see any of the other children for six weeks at a time. He desperately looks forward to the half terms so that he can reunite with his ‘soccer camp friends’ and have a catch up with that they have been doing recently. The warm feeling inside is something else when you see children really enjoying the product that you have created with just a few people. The amount of repeat business we get is phenomenal which in my eyes is the best type of business. They are customers who have tried your product and have come back again and again. If you have a son or a daughter who has an interest in football, why not give us a try? Check out our dates at: www.shaneduffsoccer.co.uk Twitter: @duffo16

Fit& Fabulous Jodie Molyneux’s guide to circuit training, the benefits and 6 easy steps to designing your own workout!

C

ircuit training is the perfect for people who want an effective, total body workout. It’s a fab way to challenge your body as you put yourself through a mixture of cardio and strength training exercises. By doing circuits you will keep your heart rate up and burn fat. You'll burn more calories in 20 minutes than you would in an entire hour on the cross trainer. Plus, the effect of including resistance and compound exercise in the circuits’ means you will carry on burning calories for up to 48 hours after your workout ends! I am a personal trainer and group exercise instructor and help my clients and group members to hit their goals by designing sessions which will ensure they hit every major (and minor) muscle group. Here are my six easy steps to help you build your perfect circuit.

STEP 1: Select your time limit. Circuit training is a workout based around a set number of "stations" so, before you start, decide how much time you have available to work out. You can then determine how many circuits you’ll need to complete and how hard you'll need to work. (The shorter the workout, the harder you should be pushing yourself!) Anywhere from 10-45 minutes is ideal. You may do 20, 40 or 60 second stations. STEP 2: Pick an upper-body exercise. Depending on how many stations you decide to have in your circuit will determine how many upper body exercises you do. You can choose a variety of upper-body exercise, if you are doing a bigger circuit or repeat the

same exercise each time if you want to keep things simple.

Here are some examples: dumbbell shoulder press, tricep dips, push ups, frontal raises or side raises. STEP 3: Pick a lower-body exercise. Just like you did with the upper body, choose exercises that will work each part of your lower body. You can change up the moves each time through the circuit or keep them the same.

Here are some examples: lunges, squats, hamstring curls on a Swiss ball, deadlifts. STEP 4: Pick a compound exercise. Weight training is an excellent workout, but you'll really get your heartrate up by adding in some total-body movements. Here are some examples: jumping lunges, squat jumps, single arm or double arm kettlebell swings.

STEP 5: Choose a sprint to do for up to 1 minute. Short, fast sprints are a very effective way to burn fat—especially around your midsection. Pick any type of cardio

exercise you like and go all out for 1 minute.

Here are some examples: running, skipping rope, rowing. cycling or up-hill jogging.

STEP 6: Pick an ab or core exercise It is really important to have a strong core. Your core is like a girdle of muscle. Strong abs, strong back and strong oblique’s so pick exercises that work each area. Here are some examples: plank, side plank, ab twists, back extensions.

Once you have done one full circuit, take a rest of approximately 1 minute, get a drink and make sure your music is all set for the next round. I am also running my own circuit classes. I run one at CLC sports centre in Cheltenham on a Tuesday night at 7.45pm or come along to my new class in Bredon (Nr. Tewkesbury) at Bredon playing fields on a Wednesday night at 7pm. The Motor Trader Industry Award for Green Dealer of the Year 2014 has been awarded to T H White, recognising its achievement in developing its Fiat Brand Centre in Swindon, one of the most environmentally-friendly vehicle dealerships in the UK. The Green Dealer of the Year Award, sponsored by Black Horse, acknowledges and rewards environmental best practice in the UK motor trade. A panel of judges, made up of industry professionals and a roving judge who interviewed the team at T H White, were looking for car dealers who make a significant effort to run an environmentally friendly site, together with evidence of successful initiatives and programmes promoting green practice. The acclaimed awards ceremony took place at The Grosvenor House Hotel on 9th July, celebrating best practice and outstanding achievements in the car retailing industry. Managing Director of T H White, David Scott was on hand to receive the prestigious award, at the gala dinner, which is one of the most important nights in the retail motor industry calendar. The Swindon-based T H White Fiat Group Brand Centre represents Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Fiat Professional, Abarth, Jeep and Chrysler, and is recognised as one of the most eco-friendly dealerships in the country, featuring a

range of green, money-saving technologies, which were designed and built into the two-acre purpose-built site. The Green Dealer of the Year accolade follows the building achieving an ‘A’ Energy Performance Asset Rating, which has also been recommended for a Certified Project with a score rating of ‘very good’ with BREEAM, the world's foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings. A raft of eco-friendly technologies are used throughout the Centre, including a Rain Water Harvesting System with a rain-catching roof that provides water for car washing, toilet flushing and irrigation, with a Water Recycling System incorporated into its design. This Water Recovery System is reducing mains water consumption by over 85%. The Centre also boasts

LED Lighting, a Waste Engine Oil Heating System, Air Source Heat Pumps and an extensive Solar PV System fitted by the Energy Division at T H White. The Centre uses 75% of the Solar PV energy generated with the surplus passed back to the grid. David Scott, Managing Director of T H White, said “We are delighted to have been awarded Green Dealer of the Year at the Motor Trader Industry Awards. To win such a prestigious award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the T H White team behind this important project.” T H White Fiat Group Brand Centre Forest Park Road, Mead Way, Hillmead, Swindon, SN5 5QJ T: 01793 680480 www.motors.thwhite.co.uk

This Month with Kate Justice

Long Lost Letters This month, Kate Justice, discusses how the various forms of communication can be somewhat confusing... How many different ways are there to communicate with people? Apart from talking face to face. I’ve got friends and family all over the world, so the communication age is of huge advantage to me... but I have to confess, I’m finding it increasingly overwhelming to try and stay on top of all the options. Generally, I have emails and a phone for calling and texting – even that is fraught as sometimes the messages are iMessages which means internet based and not always sent straight away. In fact while I’m sitting at my desk writing this, I have more than ten different ways to communicate with people... Let’s start with the doorbell ringing. Alice my neighbour has popped round for a cup of tea. On her way in, she picks up the post and I have a card from my cousin in Wales. Then the phone rings – the land line – and it’s mother calling to check on child care arrangements for next week. When I get back to my desk, I’ve seven new emails – one includes pictures from my sister in law in California. I then notice I’ve missed a Skype call from my brother who lives in Copenhagen. My mobile rings and as I pick it up to answer it, I see I’ve had a text from Marf over the road to say my terrier has escaped again. As I check my phone, I’m told Nikki has sent me a picture of her puppy on Snapchat and my cleaner has messaged me on What’sApp to book my next appointment. Facebook has to inform me that I have twelve new notifications and someone I used to share a house with has Tweeted a picture of me with my dress on back to front at the cricket, insinuating I had far more fun than I should have done.... Another alert pops up on my computer to announce John Smith has endorsed my skills on Linkedin. Who is John Smith?! So far, no Facetime calls... that’s when you hold the phone in front of your face and look like a moron trying to have a conversation... and hope you’ve already put your makeup on. Plus I have a work email address 130 AUGUST 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

“SO FAR, NO FACETIME CALLS... THAT'S WHEN YOU HOLD THE PHONE IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE AND LOOK LIKE A MORON TRYING TO HAVE A CONVERSATION... AND HOPE YOU'VE ALREADY PUT YOUR MAKE-UP ON.” that I’ve not even opened yet. I’m feeling tired already and it’s still the morning. My iPhone does some bizarre contact cloudy thing that means from time to time, I inadvertently call people on their email address (this doesn’t work) and I also might accidentally Facetime someone when I’m hoping to just leave a message. And if they’re on my Facebook, (which has nothing to with Facetime) a lovely little image of them pops up when they’re calling me. All this before I even begin with the alerts and info buzz one can get from internet dating. Imagine my alarm when I got ‘winked at’ by Stavros after a brief foray into the minefield that is meeting people online. I have to admit here I was

masquerading as Lovely77 on behalf of a friend who suspected her boyfriend was still at it. He was. The irony is that for me, the best and most delicious form of communication has all but died out – the hand written letter. Knowing the person has actually handled that page themselves before taking the time to post it to you, can’t be imitated. So – you’ll find the address near the front page, I look forward to receiving yours. If you would like to share your stories about your pets with Kate Justice, please email the Editor at editor@stylemagazines.co.uk
