EDITOR’S FOREWORD

W

ELCOME to our July issue. Can you believe that we

are already in July? I hope you are all looking forward to the Summer, I certainly am. There are so many

events taking place across the Cotswolds this month; the ACP Festival, Gloucester

Quays Food Festival, the Brewin Dolphin Cricket Festival and Giffords Circus will

continue to amaze audiences with their superb tricks and hilarious routines. Don’t miss out on any of these events – there is something for everyone and perfect for the entire family. If you enter our competition, you could win a cookery Master Class with either Paul Hollywood or James Martin – we have five sets of tickets to be won!

This month we have filled our pages with so many wonderful features. Included in

this issue are over 60 pages of property and interiors. So, I would suggest you pop the kettle on, (or pour a glass of wine!) and peruse this inspirational section.

Our county can, of course, rival any of our fellow counties. Made In Chelsea? We

offer you ‘Made In Cheltenham’! Shot on location at the exclusive, Foxhill Manor, we showcase the very best of what the Cotswolds has to offer for the fashion conscious amongst you (page 102).

The medieval town of Tewkesbury is our town focus this month. Here we take a

closer look at some of our favourite aspects of the historical town. Did you know that Tewkesbury was mentioned in Shakespeare’s, Henry IV? I didn’t until I read Beth Mahoney’s feature on page 46.

As you know, I do enjoy our travel features and this month Lucy Garbutt takes us on

a simply stunning adventure to Botswana (page 96). I have always wanted to visit

Botswana; even more so since reading this piece: “The watery scene below was surreal, vast bloats of hippos wallowing in the shallow water channels, parades of elephants feeding on emerald leaves...”. I could go on, but I will let you read it for yourself. Have a truly beautiful July and we will see you next month.

WIN A COOKERY MASTER CLASS WITH PAUL HOLLYWOOD OR JAMES MARTIN Five lucky readers have the chance to win a pair of tickets to an expert master class with either Paul Hollywood or James Martin at the Gloucester Quays Food Festival on Sunday 18th July. To enter, simply email editor@stylemagazines.co.uk quoting ‘Master Class Competition’

“Catering Chooses You” Natalie Letch catches up with Hotel Du Vin Cheltenham’s new general manager, Ed Duley... Charisma. I personally think charisma should be an essential ingredient in the job description of a general manager. Luckily, this comes rather naturally to the new general manager of Hotel Du Vin, Ed Duley. Ed has a great sense of humour - a personality that is always needed in a highly pressured role. It is clear why he was chosen for the job. So, let’s find out a bit more about the new man about town. Since relocating to Cheltenham with his wife this Spring, settling into his new job and town has been somwhat of a breeze. Ed explained that his main reason to move to the Cotswolds was primarily down to his wife: “She had lived in Wrexham all her life and was keen to relocate and did not mind where. I have always loved the Cotswolds. Most years I have been here for the Gold Cup – I was the one on the other side of the bar, having too much to drink and be at the point when I really should go home!” he laughs. I like finding out facts about people. So, I was particularly pleased to learn that Ed is a loyal Aston Villa fan. After his grandfather bought him their football kit for him, aged four, he has remained a fan ever since: “My brother got the Wolves kit, so I guess I got the better deal there!”. We all know someone like Ed. You know the type, a people’s person’; enthusiastic, positive that glass-isalways-full, can-do attitude – frustratingly admirable! They are characteristics that I often wish I could own from time to time. Such a personality is crucial in his role. It is he who his staff respond to, are encouraged and motivated by. In that sense, it’s certainly refreshing to see someone both passionate about his work and the people around him. Speaking of his role, Ed says:“I’m very much a mentor and I care about the development of people. Far too often people perceive catering as being an under-achieving role. I don’t believe that at all. There’s a lot of money to be made

”FAR TOO OFTEN PEOPLE PERCEIVE CATERING AS BEING AN UNDER-ACHIEVING ROLE. I DON’T BELIEVE THAT AT ALL. THERE’S A LOT OF MONEY TO BE MADE AND A LOT OF SATISFACTION TO BE HAD. IT’S INCREDIBLY REWARDING.”

and a lot of satisfaction to be had. It’s incredibly rewarding”. At this point, I became intrigued to discover if catering was an industry that he fell into or if he had always had a love for it. Ed’s response was straight to the point: “Catering chooses you”, he smiled. Ed admits that his work ethic can sometimes be a bit frustrating to staff,

yet reinforces that he does this to their benefit: “I can be a bit of pain in the neck; I like to know what people are doing, and what they are contributing. If the right people aren’t here or haven’t had the right development then they will not succeed”. The environment that Ed clearly thrives on will undoubtedly propel Hotel Du Vin towards even greater success. How would Ed like to be remembered during his tenure as a general manager one day in the future? Ed laughs, “Oh that fussy bugger, I’m glad he’s gone!” Now, I think that couldn’t be further from the case. I have a sneaky feeling that Hotel Du Vin has stumbled upon someone really, rather inspirational. Don’t believe me? I urge you to go and find out for yourself! www.hotelduvin.com

TEWKESBURY This month, we turn our focus towards the beautiful riverside town of Tewkesbury Renowned for its medieval heritage, Tewkesbury is a town so steeped in culture that it continues to captivate visitors from across the globe today. Nestled at the confluence between the meeting point of the River Severn and the River Avon, the flood plains that surround the old town mean that its structure has barely altered since the Middle Ages. Rather magical, isn’t it? Tewkesbury thrives off its heritage with a selection of museums and aweinspiring architecture. Half-timbered Tudor buildings, overhanging upperstorey’s and elaborately carved doorways are just some of the examples. You can almost sense how inhabitants of

Tewkesbury from years gone by may have gone about their day. The grand 12th century Abbey dominates the town and is a much loved aspect of Tewkesbury. Locals even refer to its grand stature as the ‘Westminster Abbey’ of the feudal barony. As a modern Gloucestershire town, Tewkesbury is a beautiful place to either live in or visit. The network of alleyways attracts a variety of visitors, which only add to the medieval charm of the town. Of course, many of you may be very familiar with Tewkesbury or even be residents. We’re sure you’ll agree that a blissful afternoon can be spent pottering around the boutique shops, tearooms, and we cannot forget to mention the pubs! Tourists can choose from an array

of accommodation to suit everyone, from classy boutique hotels and relaxed and informal B&B’s to camping for the more adventurous amongst you. Yes, the possibilities are endless. You may also have heard about Tewkesbury Mustard. No? Well, let us fill you in. Again, another medieval tradition that dates back to before the 16th century, unique to Tewkesbury and it is an artisan product that is even mentioned in many a history book. Oh, and Shakespeare’s Henry IV! Now, we did say that there is something for everyone in Tewkesbury. There are a wide range of water-based activities, including gentle river-side strolls boat trips, river cruises and day trips. The river-based entertainment also offers excursions, boat hire, canoeing and kayaking lessons. For those who prefer to relax with a spot of fishing, the Rivers Avon and Severn both provide excellent fishing waters that play host to a large variety of fish including: Barbel, Bream, Carp, Chub, Dace, Pike, Roach and Rudd, making Tewkesbury just perfect for a fresh water fishing holiday or day trip. So, join us over the next few pages, as we take a journey where we will experience all that this magical town has to offer…

Along with the delicious authentic food on offer, the restaurant itself has been decorated in true Italian style with gorgeous wooden tables and chairs, table runners, and of course a beautifully well stocked bar. Adding to the restaurants classic charm is The Well, an old Tewkesbury well that dates back as far as 1650, which is now on show in the restaurants conservatory seating area; The Well was originally used by local townspeople to collect water. With excellent service by Bruno and the front of house team, complete with a relaxed atmosphere, the team at Salerno is nothing short of impressive, with head chef Lupo previously having worked with renowned television chef Jamie Oliver, as well as in a range of independent restaurants perfecting his passion for food. Chefs Angelo and Vito, who have previously worked in some of Venice’s top restaurants prior to their move to Tewkesbury, deliver beautiful, hearty Italian food.

CGT Lettings In 2002 when Cheltenham and Gloucester Residential Lettings grew, it seemed like a natural choice to extend the business to Tewkesbury, forming Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury Lettings, otherwise known as CGT Lettings. Managed by Anne Horton, the property rental portfolio has grown dramatically to over 300 units, and with new housing developments taking place in the area it is set to grow again. Gupshill Manor Originally built in 1431 as a functioning family manor house, Gupshill Manor is steeped in history, from bloody battles to destructive fires, the manor house has a truly captivating past. After being built on the site of an earlier house, known as Globes Hall, Gupshill Manor became a thriving part of the local community, and in 1471 was at the very centre of one of the last and bloodiest battles of the War of the Roses, known as the Battle of Tewkesbury, which later led to the rise of Edward, the Duke of York to the throne. Originally double the size of the building that stands today, Gupshill Manor was severely damaged by two fires that swept through it in the late 17th and early 19th centuries, leaving half the building missing. Prior to becoming a public drinking house in the early 1950s, the manor underwent a range of refurbishments

and style changes, ready for its opening. Today Gupshill Manor is one of Gloucestershire’s leading pubs, offering a range of beers, ales and wines, a delicious menu of dishes, and a relaxed and informal service – perfect for a family meal, a quick bite to eat, or even a function or event.

The Albion Inn Established around the time of the 1830’s, The Albion Inn started life as a beerhouse; prior to enlargements which were made sometime in the late 19th century, including the incorporation of a cottage in the 1940’s, it would have been a much smaller building than the premise today. Now a modern, family run business, The Albion Inn prides itself on offering a warm, friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Stocking a delicious range of local beers and ales, as well as a range of wines, spirits and mixers, The Albion Inn is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon or evening relaxing in the lovely courtyard garden, or perhaps to enjoy an evening of entertainment, from pool and darts, to disco’s and live acts, there is always something on at The Albion.

Dudley’s with all chicken, beef, lamb, and pork farmed in Gloucestershire and the Midlands. heritage; at the rear of the pub is a barn which is believed to be the town’s oldest nonecclesiastical building with many of its roof supports made from the timbers of old ships. Butwell & Jones Jewellers Located in the heart of the town’s bustling high street, local jewellers Butwell and Jones are set in a beautiful grade two listed building that dates back as far as the English Civil War. Festivals

A Canvas for Creativity It’s that time of the year again when the ACP Festival descends upon picturesque Painswick... On Sunday 13th July, creative people of all ages, ranging from students to established designers, will arrive in Painswick to display their astonishing creations on a London style catwalk in the village’s iconic St Mary’s churchyard for this year’s one-of-a-kind acp Festival. The Festival, now in its fifth year, is looking to be bigger and better than ever, with more than 80 designers signed up to create works of art, displayed on the body, in line with this year’s themes of ‘Reflections’, ‘Invasions’ and ‘Legends’. The event will be compered by TV celebrities Dr Dawn Harper from Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies and Lisa Maxwell from Loose Women. Lady Gaga designer Adnan Bayyat and Harriet Verney (Isabella Blow’s niece and Vogue contributor) are among the names from the worlds of fashion and art announced as judges at this year’s event. Other confirmed judges include contemporary artist Daniel Chadwick, abstract artist Rachel Howard, Denise Innes from the British School of Millinery and professional artist Swarez. In 2013, 10,000 people flocked to view the incredible outfits, including Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw and local pop sensation Lily Allen. As well as the churchyard catwalk show, the streets of Painswick will be filled with a colourful array of stalls selling hand crafted goods, food and delicious offerings from local suppliers. This year there will also be circus skills’ workshops amongst the street fun and entertainment, and the pinnacle of the day will be an impressive flypast from RAF Dakota. Cheltenham based, BPE Solicitors are the Festival’s headline sponsors. Their Business Development Manager, Claire Harrison said: “We are thrilled to be involved with the festival this year, it is a brilliant reflection of the entrepreneurial spirit of the Cotswolds and it is set to be a fantastic day out for all the family”. acp is an artistic venture that encourages creative people of all ages,

and from all walks of life, to participate in making works of art that are displayed on the body. A wealth of design talent – ranging from school children to professionals – will enter the Cotswolds’ most talked about event, displaying the highest levels of creativity, skill and imagination, dressing their models in mind-boggling materials ranging from electrical wire and clip ties to full body paint. Models will present the designs on catwalk nestled in the St Mary’s Churchyard yew trees. As well as cash prizes, the festival competition offers work placements as prizes to college students, including opportunities with fabric designers Nancy Parker and Lewis and Wood.

The festivities will kick off on Saturday afternoon at 3pm, when the Paris-based quartet Hermes will perform a recital as part of the Cheltenham Festivals, followed by a display of classic and veteran cars around the village, compered by none other than Top Gear’s Richard Hammond. acp is a registered charity, and is run by an enthusiastic local team. The charity works with schools, colleges, local businesses and arts enterprises to encourage creativity and a love of the arts. The festival’s headline sponsor for this year is Cheltenham based law firm BPE Solicitors; a firm whose belief in the spirit of entrepreneur fits in well with the essence of the festival. “Without the mix of local business support, creative talent and enthusiastic volunteers, the Festival simply wouldn’t happen” explained one of acp’s Trustees, Debra Drew. Admission to the festival will be £5 on the day, or £4 in advance, children under 12 go free. See website for details www.canvasforcreativity.com

Gardening

Expand your LIVING Space Jennie Herrington set up The Green Room in 2002, and ever since she has made it her mission to make England’s land more green and pleasant. Working on hundreds of gardens and homes all over The Cotswolds, Oxfordshire and the South West Jennie has transformed spaces to become both more functional and beautiful. Jennie shows us how to take the inside out and make the very best use of your outside space. Right now I’m sitting here writing this with all the doors open gazing onto another room of my house. This room hasn’t got four walls and a ceiling but there is no mistaking that it is a room and we use it as such. This balmy summer’s evening of course helps but we use this space all year round. It is an enclosed courtyard, it’s lit at night, it has comfortable seating and heating and it also ticks the holy grail of gardening box by being truly low maintenance. The point that I’m attempting to make is that with some careful forethought and following some simple design ideas anyone can create what feels like an internal space externally. A space that can be used all year round, has ever-changing interest and is definitely cheaper than moving house in order to gain that vital extra living space. A garden is not simply space that surrounds the house only to be enjoyed in good weather. It is part of the home, part of what that hard earned cash bought and perhaps played a large part in the choice of house in the first place. Making the garden part of the home will ensure that every inch of space is being made the most of. We are all time poor. There are now so many demands on our day and our time that gardens are often neglected as a further drain and not worthy of those precious minutes. With some careful planning though that doesn’t have to be the case. ORGANISE the outside space. Think of what is needed in the house and there is usually a means of gaining externally what is lacking internally.

• Cover walkways to protect from the elements. • Add seating areas with light, power and some form of heat. • Create storage whether it is under a seating area or an attractive feature for stacking logs.

UTILISE the hundreds of products that are now suitable for outdoor use from furniture to lighting and heating or sound and entertainment systems. Sonos is a brand I can recommend for sound www.sonos.com or Planika Fires for heating www.planikafires.com

MANAGE those spaces so that they are enjoyable rather than act as a drain on our precious time. • Block plant borders for maximum weed suppression and minimum input • Consider container planting to allow for seasonal interest and maximum impact.

• Contrary to popular opinion, lawns are high maintenance so consider astro-turf as an option. www.easigrass.com It no longer looks like it should grace a butcher’s window, the products are tough, hardwearing and incredibly realistic. ENHANCE the space. See where the eye is naturally drawn to and place something beautiful there. Sculpture can be something as simple and inexpensive as gnarled old piece of driftwood. The garden pictured is from RHS Chelsea 2014 and perfectly epitomizes this notion of bringing the inside out and how it can work on both a functional and beautiful level.

DAIRY QUEEN The owners of The Old Dairy, a pretty double fronted, rendered residence, tucked away in a quiet backwater of Cheltenham, have spent 4 years tweaking the interior to create the perfect family home. WORDS BY RACHEL TOZZA PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM EVANS

‘We used to live across the road’ laughs Sophie Paul. ‘We walked past this house every day, and then one day my husband pointed to it and said ‘We need to live there’! ‘It wasn’t on the market at the time’ she continues, but the Paul’s had set their hearts on The Old Dairy. They eventually made the purchase and the 4 bedroom cottage became home to Sophie and her family. The interior of The Old Dairy reads like a wish list of design covetables. From the moment you reach for the antique brass pear door knocker on the painted & panelled front door, you know that every detail of this beautiful home has been considered. The entrance opens up to a sunny central hall. The flagstones are the originals from the Dairy’ explains Sophie. Leading off from the main hall, at the front of the house is a bright and airy study complete with Vanessa Arbuthnott linen drapes, an antique bureau, bare painted floorboards and shelving packed with well read books. To the other side of the hall is the sitting room, which is testament to Sophie’s laid back, almost effortless elegant style. Nothing is forced or overly edited, it all seems to have occurred quite naturally. ‘I grew up on the west coast of Scotland’ explains Sophie. It is a subject she talks about with great fondness and the inspiration she draws on from this time in her life is apparent in the palette she uses throughout her home. It really does evoke feelings of being close to the sea - which is no small feat in landlocked Cheltenham! The bare painted floorboards, the bleached woods, baskets and natural textures used in abundance. The sitting room scheme is pulled together with stunning linen drapes in fabric from GPJ Baker, puddling to the floor and injecting the room with a shot of colour. Opening up at the back of The Old 78 JULY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

Dairy is a huge kitchen, dining area and garden room that can easily accommodate a crowd. Yet the large space does nothing to detract from the cosy feel of this family home. Any notion that it is not possible to combine & maintain a stylish interior, with 4 children under the age of 7, does not apply here! ‘My husband and I are both from large families’ Sophie says warmly and you can see that ‘family’ plays a starring role in the Paul residence. Artwork created by the children is framed and takes pride of place on the wall, aside contemporary typographical prints, old watercolour paintings and pencil portraits. The garden room with its high ceiling makes the most of the stunning garden views. The windows are dressed with custom made linen curtains trimmed

with a pretty floral fabric from Cabbages and Roses. There is an inviting sofa upholstered in linen, which is full of cushions. ‘My friends laugh at me...I’m always plumping cushions!’ jokes Sophie. When she has a rare moments peace, Sophie is to be found tending to her garden.‘I didn’t realise how much I would love gardening’ says Sophie of her new found passion. ‘When we first bought the house, the garden was very over-grown and needed completely returfing and we put in new flower beds’ she continues. It was in stocking the new flower beds that Sophie discovered her new horticultural capabilities and regularly cuts and carries armfuls of her own grown florals indoors to arrange and display in her home. With a Degree in Fine Art, Sophie no doubt has a skill for the visual. Upstairs, the aesthetic continues with modern, french inspired, oak furniture sitting effortlessly next to family heirloom pieces. Everywhere you look, every corner, is dressed, creating narrative and depth. The vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms create an interesting backdrop to Sophie’s vignettes. The original building has been extended over the years, which if anything has added to the character of The Old Dairy. The interior too reflects this and provides rewards in additional character from years of collecting. ‘I am very lucky, my family have some great pieces of furniture which I have managed to collect’ says Sophie. There is nothing forced about the home and that comes from Sophie. She is so natural in her approach to everything, it is inevitable this shines through in the look she has created inside and out. If ever you were looking for a serious dose of style inspiration, and a master class in how to make the most of everything you treasure, then look no further than The Old Dairy.

Wabi Sabi The Japanese art of imperfect beauty Interior designer, Kelly James explores the interior design style of Wabi Sabi – flawed beauty! PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOWPLAY MEDIA

Wabi sabi is a concept, an aesthetic, and a worldview. Simply, an intuitive way of living that emphasizes finding beauty in imperfection, and accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay.

The words ‘wabi’ and ‘sabi’ do not translate easily. Wabi originally referred to the loneliness of living in nature; remote from society; sabi meant ‘chill’, ‘lean’ or ‘withered’. Around the 14th century, these meanings began to change, taking on more positive connotations. Wabi now connotes rustic simplicity, freshness or quietness, and can be applied to both natural and humanmade objects, or understated elegance. It can also refer to quirks and anomalies arising from the process of construction, which add The meaning:

uniqueness and elegance to the object. Sabi is beauty or serenity that comes with age, when the life of the object and its impermanence are evidenced in its patina and wear, or in any visible repairs. In today’s Japan, the meaning of wabisabi is often condensed to ‘wisdom in natural simplicity.’ In art books, it is typically defined as ‘flawed beauty.’ When researching this style I found many individual opinions, different ways of describing the same thing: ‘it’s a way of life’,

‘the Japanese philosophy of appreciating things that are imperfect, primitive and incomplete’ and also ‘appreciation of modest, the handmade, the recycled, the cracks, the mistakes, the frayed edges, rust, the natural aging caused by the ravages of time and weather’. All of these descriptions to me say – natural! If you apply Wabi Sabi to us, to our faces; the aging lines, that add to and enhance our personalities, that without fads like botox and plastic surgery, tell our life stories, that add to the interest of our character and say unashamedly and happily who and what we are! So when applying this style to interiors just think – naturally aged. To discuss your interior design project contact Kelly James at Shadowplay Design on 01242 253700.

Darling DIANTHUS This month our media horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith is in the pink with a border beauty… Where would our florists be without dianthus? The large blousy carnations that are among the UK’s best-selling cut flowers. Restaurants everywhere serve their paying guests under the watchful eye of a lone carnation quietly observing all around and hoping not to get too close to the raging flame of its neighbouring tea-light. I prefer my dianthus in the garden however, free to expel their delightful scent without being masked by a chicken tikka. It is of course the more delicate old fashioned dianthus that exhibit the best scents, rather than the larger border carnations. ‘Mrs Sinkins’ is a favourite of many and rightly so. White, shaggy heads like half melted marsh mallows, dripping with the most delicious fragrance. Dianthus means divine flower and ‘Mrs Sinkins’ is certainly worthy of this accolade. It is confusingly referred to as a ‘pink’ – this refers to the crimped or pinked edges of the petals though, rather than the colour as is often assumed when the term ‘pinks’ is applied. For a modern take on ‘Mrs Sinkins’, South West based Whetman Pinks recently introduced Dianthus ‘Memories’. A runner up as plant of the year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show a few years ago, this plant has good scent, repeat flowering and strong full flowers. Sales of this plant have also raised much money for The Alzheimer’s Society and continue to do so to this day. Alpine dianthus are perfect for rockeries or pots and it was in fact a Gloucestershire man, Clarence Elliot, who in the 1920s worked hard to popularise the growing of these and other alpine plants in troughs and planters. ‘Pike’s Pink’ is awash with double light pink heads while alpinus ‘Albus’ is delicate white and definitely single but happy that way! A new one for me this year was

“THESE DARLINGS OF THE BORDER ARE CERTAINLY CELEBRITIES IN THEIR OWN RIGHTS HAVING APPEARED IN WORKS OF ART AND LITERATURE FOR YEARS.” Dianthus ‘Icomb’ – low growing, bright pink small flowers with a very nose catching sweet shop scent. Named after the Gloucestershire village, a good choice for a Cotswolds garden, where good drainage and sunshine are their required ingredients. These darlings of the border are certainly celebrities in their own rights having appeared in works of art and

literature for years. Rembrandt was one such artistic admirer who I’m sure would be pleased that a cultivar now bears his name, no doubt in recognition of his choice of floral subject in one of his 17th Century paintings. They also made an outing into the world of pop in the 1950s, all together now: “A white sport coat (and a pink carnation)”. If you’re short of artistic ideas for that last minute birthday cake, then fear not, reach for a dianthus as many of them are edible and look fantastic as cake decorations! They have a sort of clove like spicy taste that you might expect given their fragrance. Sweet William petals look great on a cake or in a salad and also fall into the dianthus family. It was in fact a new type of Sweet William that jumped out at me last year while filming ‘The Big Allotment Challenge’ for the BBC. Grown by one of our couples, the large green pom-poms of Dianthus ‘Green Trick’ were probably my favourite plant of the series! A very new introduction and fantastic as cut flowers, these look like bright green moss balls on sticks and add such a talking point to your border. One of my ‘must have’ plants and gladly now one of my ‘do have’ plants! So I’m off outside with my trowel now, have a good July and we’ll meet again next month, I’ll be wearing a pink carnation.... Behind the Brand

IAN MANKIN At Just Fabrics we have a huge selection of fabric books to browse through, in addition to our stocked fabrics on the roll. We have several fabric books by the brand Ian Mankin, as well as selling their fantastic deckchair fabrics. So we took the opportunity to have a chat with the Managing Director David to find out a bit more about the brand... What makes Ian Mankin different from other brands? Unlike most other brands Ian Mankin designs and weaves its own fabrics in its own weaving mill in Lancashire. The brand has a very simple, timeless and classical look and uses a small and traditional colour palette throughout the range. This means that fabrics from all the collections work well with each other and do not date. We are accredited by the Soil Association to produce organic fabrics and have a strong environmental ethos, using only natural fibres across the range. Which of your products and designs are the most popular? Our most popular designs are simple ticking stripes. They have an elegant simplicity that works in all sorts of rooms from Georgian townhouses to coastal cottages. You manufacture all your products in the UK. Tell us a bit about your mill? Our mill is in Burnley, Lancashire, once the world centre for cotton weaving. In the late 1920s there were 100,000 looms working in Burnley – now there are just 30 and all of these at Ian

the dyes we use have been carefully selected to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Our fabrics are washed in pure Pennine water leaving a cloth that is just as nature intended! The fabrics are all recyclable at the end of their life. What is your personal favourite fabric or item that you produce? What a hard question to answer. It is like having to choose a favourite child in your family! One of my favourites at the moment is our Plantation Herringbone. It is a very simple natural cotton undyed fabric that looks absolutely fabulous as large curtains.

“THE BRAND HAS A VERY SIMPLE, TIMELESS AND CLASSICAL LOOK AND USES A SMALL AND TRADITIONAL COLOUR PALETTE THROUGHOUT THE RANGE.” Mankin’s mill. We are proud to be keeping many generations of skills alive and kicking! Your fabrics are made from natural fibres, do you think this is important in fabric manufacture today? Natural fibres offer a unique handle and a connection back to the earth. Our organic cotton is grown without the need for pesticides and all

Are there any key design trends that you predict will be big in 2015? At Ian Mankin we take very little notice of trends! We pride ourselves on producing fabrics in colours that will stand the test of time. The last thing we would want is someone to invest in new curtains that became unfashionable again in a few years. You only have to look back at old family photo albums and you wonder what on earth you were doing wearing that jumper! The

Good Life

The first is Meredydd, a beautiful White Park bull. You can recognise this breed by their very distinctive markings, they look quite majestic. They have beautiful, black and shiny wet noses, black ears and rims of eyes, teets and feet.... sometimes even a black tongue to match! They all have horns, even the girls. They’re an ancient breed and are part of our heritage, listed back as far as 2000 years ago. They used to roam around huge country estates and were considered a sign of wealth. Sadly, by the Second World War, most herds had died out and there were only a few left. The breed was considered a national treasure, so in fear of it being wiped out entirely, a few breeding pairs were shipped out to Canada to start their own breeding programme. Now where was I, after my short history lesson...? Fascinating stuff though, isn’t it? We do already have a White Park bull called Inspiration, but as his daughters are now old enough to come into the herd and produce some lovely calves for us next April, we need to replace him with another bull. Meredydd featured on a recent episode of Countryfile, where Adam and our stockman, Mike went on a search to find our new boy. Most rare breeds such as the White Park cattle have an annual sale at market. So Adam and Mike looked through the auctioneer’s catalogue and headed off to Worcester, where there were 6 bulls for sale that day. One of them was our own, one of Inspiration’s sons who we couldn’t keep in the herd with his sisters. Adam and Mike were looking for very specific characteristics in our next bull. He’ll have to produce girls that look the part and display all of the beautiful characteristics we associate with the breed, as they will be kept or sold on to other breeders. Any boys that come along will be sold on as bulls to sire

calves in another herd, or to sell on as beef. So when it comes to the bull, he needs to have large and firm testicles, good conformation (meaning all four legs standing evenly set, nice and square) and a good shape and form. Meredydd stood out from all the rest and Adam and Mike were thrilled to secure him in the end. Back at the farm, we all think he’s great and hope visitors enjoy him as much as we do. I have cooked with – and eaten! – quite a lot of White Park meat and it’s absolutely delicious. If you’re wondering how to get hold of any, we sell some of our meat through the Farm Park shop, so there’s always a chance of getting your hands on some if you’re coming to see us. Our second celebrity bull on the farm is, of course, the fantastic Archie! He’s our new 16 month old Highland bull and as he’s following in the footsteps of Eric (a firm Countryfile favourite), he’s had a

lot of media coverage already. Archie’s official breed name is Gilleasbuig of Balmoral, as he was bought from Her Majesty’s Balmoral Estate. It’s far too much of a mouthful! So we just call him Archie. He is, quite frankly, just the full package. You don’t need to know anything about the characteristics of his breed as he really is absolutely perfect. He’s been settling in nicely and getting to know all his new girls. We believe that he is going to grow into a fine gentleman of a bull and hopefully produce us lots of beautiful Highland offspring that even the Queen would be proud of! Overall, I think our new boys have the X-Factor and I hope you’ll think the same if you come and see us. Let me know what you think on Twitter @mandyfarmpark. BOTSWANA HAUNTING BEAUTY & THE WORLD’S FINEST WILDLIFE Home to the ‘big 5,’ Botswana remains one of Africa’s premier safari destinations; with its startling diversity of natural habitats and wildlife, fromthe haunting beauty of the harsh dry deserts of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Makgadikgadi salt pans, to the effervescent Okavango delta. The Okavango Delta is the greatest of all Botswana’s natural wonders. Over one thousand kilometres away in the mountains of Angola, the Kavango River starts its incredible journey towards Botswana and, owing to the earth’s fault lines, is unable to reach the sea. After flowing down the ‘panhandle’, the river hits the sands of the Kalahari Desert, which transforms into a unique watery oasis and wildlife haven. We all love a journey but this was to be my journey of a lifetime; to the remote north eastern heart of the Okavango delta to get closer to African animals than ever before. I was off on a water safari in search of the elusive Sitatunga – a webfooted, semi-aquatic antelope – and the best way to find him was by traditional Mokoro dug-out canoe! I had driven through Botswana on a previous trip from West to East Africa, and (painfully) straight past the Okavango Delta – and always longed to experience this ‘mustsee-in-your-lifetime’ aquatic spectacle for myself. My safari to Botswana was in full swing. With each leg of the journey the plane decreased in size as my anticipation increased, adrenalin surged as I journeyed closer to Botswana’s soul. From the sky, I marvelled at how the vast Kalahari wraps its harsh dry desert protectively around the mysterious wonderland of the Delta. I was entering the great watery wilderness I had always longed to visit. Pretty soon the Kalahari was left behind as the light aircraft chased its own shadow still deeper into nature’s core, skimming the surface of floodplains, swamps and swollen water ways. Self-professed adventuress; Lucy Garbutt is left with indelible memories when she takes an ethereal journey to one of the most beautiful places on Earth in search of the elusive Sitatunga …

“WITH EACH LEG OF THE JOURNEY THE PLANE DECREASED IN SIZE AS MY ANTICIPATION INCREASED, ADRENALIN SURGED AS I JOURNEYED CLOSER TO BOTSWANA’S SOUL!“ watery scene below was surreal, vast bloats of hippos wallowing in the shallow water channels, parades of elephants feeding on emerald leaves, dazzles of strikingly camouflaged zebra converging on small islands and gangs of buffalo feasting on the grassy floodplains. Excitement reached fever pitch as the plane touched down on the sandy runway sending a flurry of impala bounding to safety and a pair of giraffes lolloping into a thicket of palm trees. Following the first

of many ‘long lost adventurer’ sort of greetings and ice cold drinks, I was ushered aboard a safari jeep where perching high in the comfort of an ‘armchair’ I was treated to a transfer like no other through the bush while keeping my eyes peeled for glimpses of the big five!

Bubbling over with anticipation, this time aboard a motor boat, I was zipping through papyrus swamp and mirrored water channels to the exquisite palm fringed island of the Shinde Private Reserve and the intimate hideaway of the Shinde Enclave. With just three close-to-nature eco-lux tents and a guide, private chef, housekeeper and waiter I was treated like royalty! Following a sumptuous al fresco candle-lit dinner, hot bath, blissful sleep and breakfast banquet – the search for the Sitatunga commenced. I hopped aboard a traditional Mokoro and found myself being poled along by an African gondolier, gliding silently along crystalclear winding waterways brimming with a dazzling array of birdlife, frogs and dragonflies. We slipped through lagoons of water lilies as dozy hippo flicked their ears and snorted and kingfishers darted. Rounding a bend along an old hippo trail hugging the banks of an ebony grove, we disturbed a gigantic bull elephant feasting and with a hearty flap of his sail size ears he sent us, together with a rare Pel’s fishing owl on our way. We didn’t actually sight the Sitatunga but there were many occasions when we thought we caught a glimpse of its thick water-proof hide

disappearing amongst the reeds. There are countless highlights of this very special journey to Botswana. The early morning walking safaris in the Moremi Game Reserve were sublime. The conventional game drives in unspoilt big-game country and close encounters with elephant, buffalo, zebra, lion, giraffe and antelope incredible – pulling up beside a spectacular leopard snoozing on a fallen tree trunk – the following day a pride of lion lounging on ancient sand dunes on the savannah plains! Perhaps the most thrilling was a traditional ‘hunt’ with the Kalahari San bushmen through acacia woodland where we startled a white rhino and her calf – they stood their ground as we gingerly backed off! The memories and sounds of Africa are indelible – peeping frogs, roaring lion and the hyena’s whooping call. AWoman’sWork

Surtees SPEAKS... Why match pots should come with a health warning, and the curse of the doggy fleece… Tired of not being able to find the right words for er, certain situations, I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and invent a lexicon of my own – Surtees Style. Watch out Oxford English Dictionary, there’s competition! Allow me to clarify: BAGASSEMENT The feeling you get when you realise your dog has chosen to christen the pavement outside school with his finest, steaming specimen – and you’ve forgotten a doggy bag, so instead have to use an old tissue. As the children and their parents’ walk by, their noses wrinkled in disgust, you crouch down, performing the scrape of shame, and wonder why they never mentioned this at puppy training. COSMOPHOBIA The panic that results when you can’t decide what to drink. It used to be so simple – ½ a lager, a glass of chardonnay or a vodka & coke. Now you order by brand – a Hendricks & tonic, a belvedere rocks. Do you want lemon or lime, cucumber or flaming orange peel? As you lurch through the cocktail menu, from daiquiris to an old fashioned, you long for the good old days when a G&T with and ice and a slice was classed as a cocktail. And muddled meant confused – not squished up fruit in a glass. WWMD Have you seen “The Good Wife” – the TV programme about an uptight, conservative lawyer who wouldn’t dream of acting inappropriately? Friends of mine who admire her sangfroid have adopted ” WWAD” as their mantra – ie, “what would Alisha do” when they’re

faced with a moral dilemma. But why have someone like Alicia with her pursed lips and demure attitude as your guru? Instead, I prefer to live by this slogan – WWMD – what would Madonna do? The answer generally involves a hot, young Latino dancer, excessive lycra and some sapphic action. Much more fun than boring old sour puss Alisha…. (KELLY) HOPPENITIS The palpitations you get when you realise you’ve now spent over £50 on match pots from Little Green & Farrow & Ball – and they’re all essentially the same, ie beige. And that you hate to be suburban, but you actually prefer the original colour the builders put on the walls; which was magnolia. ANORAKNAPHOBIA When you’ve carefully dressed to impress for speech day; a perfect blend of not trying too hard – attractive but not mumsy. Think more Notting Hill than Benhall. But as the British Summer kicks in and the temperature plummets, you’re forced into pulling on the fleece you keep in the car for dog walking. And end up looking like one of THOSE mums. COITUSCANIS The embarrassed look on dog owners’ faces when their loved up canines enthusiastically slobber over another

dog’s genitals. The pooches are in heaven; for them it’s the canine version of Tinder. As the mortified owners drag their charges away, the dogs have the last laugh – They’ll be back here doing it all again the next morning.

BENJAMBUTTONITIS There’s something about throwing alcohol down your neck that has a magical effect: as the night progresses you start to look younger! Happy and flushed, each time you look up from your glass you smile at your reflection – why, you could almost be 25 again, you feel so good! In the grey light of morning however, your bathroom mirror tells another story. You actually look 125.

Who out there hasn’t experienced at least one of these? Although obviously I’m not speaking from my own personal experience..…

I would love to hear from you! Please write to me, Amanda Toner (maiden name Surtees!) via editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream Nourishing Lip Balm (£20) will keep your lips soft and supple for the whole duration of your flight and beyond. I love that this also has the added benefit of SPF20 so it will keep your lips protected when you make it to the beach!

Get the celebrity look and live the high life. Have you ever wondered how the celebs keep their skin looking so great, even after a 10-hour flight? Keeping your skin hydrated whilst up in the air can be difficult, and you may have noticed that the reduction in oxygen can play havoc with your skin. So when it’s time for a skin refresher mid-flight I recommend this little beauty secret: the Caudalie Beauty Elixir (£11). It tightens pores and gives the complexion a burst of radiance for skin that feels awakened. It even comes in a handy travel sized bottle too, so it’s a big tick on your holiday beauty checklist.

Trying to get some beauty sleep? We all know planes aren’t the comfiest places, so for help getting some much needed shut eye use a pampering eye mask such as this one by Sanctuary Spa (£7). It’s cushioned for extra comfort on the eye,

blocks out light and has a gentle lavender fragrance to aid relaxation and help you drift off to sleep. With this nifty beauty buy, you’re sure to be the envy of all your fellow holiday-makers!

And for an extra step, why not try this genius product from Soap & Glory – The Beauty Sleep Accelerator Night and Flight Moisture Miracle (£13) is formulated with nutrients that feed and plump your skin while you sleep. A super easy way to feel rejuvenated when you wake up for landing.

And just before you land, don’t forget to refresh your makeup. A great multitasking product is the NARS’s Multiple (£30). It comes in a beautiful shade range, and provides that pretty flush of colour whilst also doubling up as a lip tint. With its creamy formula it’s a dream to blend – I really wouldn’t be without one of these for the summer! Follow these beauty tips for your own flight skin pampering experience, and you’ll be holiday ready in no time.

FATISM COULD BE OFF THE MENU In previous columns, I have made my intentions clear in that I intend to focus on where the law is failing to keep up with modern society, especially in the sphere of employment law. Therefore I apologise in advance as I outline below an area where the law is, just perhaps, being a little too enthusiastic... Statistics, (if they can be believed) tell us that in the UK, 64% of people are now officially overweight. It should be no surprise as portions “Supersize” and we no longer even have to get out of the car to buy them. Hectic lifestyles mean convenience food is often the only choice and we all suffer the consequences. I myself have been described politely as “well nourished”. So my despair over this month’s interesting legal development is tinged somewhat with relief which I have to admit is purely selfish. The European Court of Justice is considering the case of a 26 stone nanny called Karsten Kaltoff (according to the Times 9th June) who is claiming that being obese is something that should be protected and discrimination on the grounds of someone’s portliness should be prohibited. If this is approved by the court, then employers are going to start to need to consider making adjustments for the larger lady or gentleman in order to allow them to do their job. Before I hear cries of “more Euro lunacy” I should point out that this principle has already found favour in the UK through the Equality Act and protection for those who are disabled. If someone has a medical condition that has a substantial adverse effect on the person’s ability to do day to day tasks, which could well be obesity, then they are protected. In short, it’s not being fat itself, but if a disability makes one fat that attracts

Darren Sherborne

protection. I should be pleased, (having consumed my share of pies) but my joy has a bitter flavour. Where will it end? Critics in the legal world are already ruminating the consequences; could employers have to provide parking spaces closer to the door for example, or on the contrary should employers provide spaces further away in order to provide a bit of exercise? Will we need to provide stronger chairs, and if this was offered without being requested would it be harassment? Naturally any harassment would include micky taking by other employees and this in itself could be an issue for employers. No more calling colleagues “lard arse” as I have heard happens at some

“IN SHORT, IT’S NOT BEING FAT ITSELF, BUT IF A DISABILITY MAKES ONE FAT THAT ATTRACTS PROTECTION.” workplaces. Clearly in our drive to protect everyone’s rights we may be overlooking our obligations and of course, common sense. The fact is that if someone was disfigured due to a disability, there are not many of us who tolerate jokes about it. This is not that different. In reality, much of this talk is panic driven nonsense. At least in the UK, the protections described apply only where an unfortunate soul suffers obesity through a medical condition. If like me the source of the problem is simply eating habits and lack of exercise, there is no underlying condition and so no protection. It’s a shame, but there it is. Employers can breathe a sigh of relief, but a guarded one. We await the ruling from the European Court on this one. In the meantime, if someone’s size is a result of a medical condition, they may already be protected. Barbara Jordan answers your questions on divorce Q

I am in the middle of a divorce, and have found a bundle of papers belonging to my husband, who has left the former matrimonial home. They were at the back of a chest of drawers in our bedroom, and clearly my husband had been hiding them.

I have looked at them, and they contain a lot of information about my husband's financial circumstances that are really relevant to the divorce. However, my solicitor says that I cannot use them at all, which seems really strange to me.

A

What is the position?

In a recent case the Court of Appeal decided that, if a spouse finds and looks at documents that clearly belong to the other party, they cannot copy them in a furtive manner, and if they do so the spouse who has found private documents and tried to copy them furtively could be found guilty of Breach of Privacy Rules and find themselves facing civil and criminal penalties. However, you are entitled to give the documents to your solicitor who can arrange for them to be copied without reading them, and then should return them to the other parties solicitor.

Your husband's solicitor, on receiving these documents owes a high duty to the Court and must read the documents, disclose all which are admissible and relevant to your divorce and retain the documents if your husband disinstructs him, pending an Order of the Court. If your husband has no solicitor your own solicitor must retain the documents and seek Directions from the Court.

In all probability, therefore, these documents will, in due course, be disclosed, and you should follow the above Rules.

Q

I got divorced two years ago, and had understood at the time that I had received a full 50% of all the assets.

However, that calculation included ÂŁ100,000 worth of

pension funds in my husband's name, which he transferred to me, and I now understand that this money was treated as if it was cash that I could use. I have now been told that I can never have ÂŁ100,000 from this pension fund, but have to receive it month by month as an annuity, and that it will only yield about ÂŁ6,000 per annum.

Had I known this at the time I would never have agreed the settlement that I made.

A

Is there anything I can do?

Firstly, you need to find out whether your husband's pension which was transferred to you was a money purchase pension and which may be capable of being encashed under the rules that the Government are talking about bringing in. If not, then it does seem to me that you may well have accepted less by way of settlement than you were entitled to, as pension funds that are not capable of being converted into 100% cash are not usually treated in the same way as other assets, such as the equity in a property.

You may well be able to sue your former solicitor in negligence for the loss you have sustained, and I would suggest you investigate this immediately. Under the Professional Negligence Law, your solicitor's insurers would be obliged, were you to win your claim to put you in the same position as you would have been had the negligence not occurred.

My firm deals with Professional Negligence claims on a No Win, No Fee basis, and thus I suggest you take advice as soon as you can, with a view to righting this potential wrong. For more information please contact Barbara Jordan on 01242 851619 or email BJordan@Jordans-Solicitors.com.

HILDEN HOUSE We find out more about why Hilden House is the perfect venue for every occasion... Tell us about Hilden House; when did you decide to open and why in Cheltenham? Our owners fell in love with Hannaford’s, as it then was, in January 2010. It was a rather tired guest house, but in a great location and they saw the potential. They redecorated all of the rooms in a more traditional Regency Style, renovated the existing bathrooms and opened up the dining room uncovering original wooden mouldings. Hilden House opened for Gold Cup Week 2010. Cheltenham was their first choice location because it has so much going on all year round – the races, the festivals and the entertainment events. What’s more it is a perfect base to explore the Cotswold’s. You have been awarded Gold Bed and Breakfast/ Guest Accommodation of the year 2014 – that’s must have been a proud moment? Considering that we haven’t been in business, in Cheltenham, for many years, it was certainly a wonderful acknowledgement of all the passion and hard work that has gone into improving and upgrading the business, by all of our staff. What would you say sets you apart from the other B&B’s in Cheltenham? Aidan and I enjoy the company and the diversity of the guests we meet at Hilden House. Coming from New Zealand and

Rooms and five minutes’ drive from the Race Course, we are ideally placed for wedding receptions, Christmas Parties and family gatherings at local restaurants. House parties are our specialty and because of our beautiful dining room, bar and sunny courtyard, we are ideal for gatherings to celebrate special occasions. We can cater for buffet meals and cocktail parties for up to 25 guests with ease.

Ireland we are pleased to help our guests see the wonderful aspects and highlights that Cheltenham and the Cotswolds has to offer. Suggesting places we have explored thoroughly since arriving here three years ago. We offer friendly hospitality, a comfortable room and an excellent freshly cooked breakfast. With parking often a problem in Cheltenham, do you have any parking for your guests? Rarely does it prove a problem because we offer the use of Parking Permits and these enable our guests to park very close-by. We do offer a personal service by helping guests with luggage and of course have large umbrellas available for those wet days. Since the Cotswolds is such a desirable place to visit, can you offer exclusive use of Hilden House for a big group of friends or family? We have 12 rooms, all en-suite and because they are a mixture of Twin and Double rooms, we do have a room to suit everyone. We have two Four Poster Double rooms, some rooms with baths and two rooms in our Coach House at Ground Level. Because we are just five minutes from Cheltenham High Street, ten minutes’ walk from the Pump

For those who require a little pampering time after experiencing all Cheltenham has to offer, do you have access to a spa? Chapel Spa and Hilden House do have a special relationship whereby we offer several packages especially designed for our guests, whether they be business guests with limited time or guests wanting to spoil themselves for a more leisurely pampering. Do you have any special offers for anyone booking with you this coming Summer? We always have offers for two and three night stays which is so much more relaxing for guests attending weddings in Cheltenham, or those guests who are visiting family and wish to explore the Cotswold villages and countryside as well. We often help guests with itineraries, mapping out the must-see places and helping with restaurant recommendations and reservations. We want to stay! How can we reach you? If guests call or email us, we can personalize their stay with a room to suit. If you are planning a house party we can offer discounts and make suggestions for your catering needs. Going back to your roots, Organic Wine in Bordeaux Why vintners are opting for organic grapes and how this will tantilise your tastebuds... By Nick Stephens Organic wines are growing in popularity and you will often see these wines in France displaying the green and white ‘AB’ label. This stands for ‘Agriculture Biologique’ and the vineyards have to meet certain criteria in order to qualify. The wines have to be made from organically grown grapes which means that the winemakers do not use chemical weed killers, pesticides, fertilizers or fungicides on their crops. An increasing amount of winemakers are concerned at the amounts of chemicals being sprayed on the land, the vines and the grapes. They believe that the use of chemicals destroys the uniqueness of the land and the individuality of the flavour that this terroir imparts to the wine. They have a good point. Some of these chemicals can have a significant impact on soil and water quality. They are also hazardous to vineyard workers if they come into direct contact. Most vineyards use chemicals to combat pests and these can be absorbed into the grape vine, passing into the fruit. As a result, residues of these chemicals find their way into the finished wine. This has worried consumers for some time and many wine lovers are turning to organic wines for health reasons and because of their desire to support ecofriendly vineyards. In Bordeaux there has been an interesting trend to go back to the vineyards roots (literally!) and the number of organic estates have increased from 3% to 7% in the last decade, with organic wine production growing at a higher rate than non-organic in some recent years. Chateaux are focused on increasing biodiversity and promoting more sustainable wine making. Several of the famous Grand Cru Classés have adopted organic methods in the vineyards, some even going back to horse power (notably Chateaux Margaux, Pontet Canet, La Lagune and Domaine de Chevalier).

Chateau Pape Clement has gone one step further and has returned to its 19th century past with the reintroduction of oxen. They are powerful, as an ox can pull and hold more than twice its weight. Marel and Blanc, the names of the oxen at Pape Clement, will be able to pull mowing and cutting machinery. Many of the smaller estates, the Petits Chateaux, are also organic. One in particular, Chateau Rioublanc, produces both a lovely red and a white wine. This is a family owned winery located in Saint Ciers d’Abzac, not far from Pomerol and Saint Emilion. Philippe Carretero represents the latest generation to handle the reins at this small chateau, which is certified both ‘Agriculture Biologique,’ ‘Ecocert’ and ‘EU Organic’.

The soil is worked by hand – sometimes the tiller is helped along with a helping tow from a quad bike with light low pressure tyres if they going gets tough. Philippe says that hand tilling is precise and only an experienced worker can achieve this efficiently. The vines have not been fed chemical fertilizer for 20 years, instead they are fed with compost that slowly release nutrients into the soil. Grass grows between the rows of vines and Philippe believes that competition with the grass is really beneficial as it limits the vine’s vigour, protects from erosion and limits soil compaction. As he does not use weedkillers he found an original solution – a tool created in Italy for ecological weed control which he had specially adapted to suit the vineyard. Philippe’s background is not only in oenology (the study of wine making) but

engineering and he knew from an early age that his destiny was to make wine at Rioublanc. The development of the chateau has always involved long term vision and Philippe says that ‘it takes time, lots of time and you are always thinking of the future. When you plant a vine, you are investing in it for 50 years. Most of what we do, we do for our children. It is a gift and it’s a duty... that’s life!’ The result is superb. The red Chateau Rioublanc has great structure with intense aromas of black fruits (blackberry, blueberry) and spices (vanilla, pepper) with notes of oak. On the palate the balance is perfect, with forceful and elegant tannins. Nice lasting finish. I’d recommend you open the wine 2 hours before serving and it’s lovely with red meats, casseroles, roasts and of course with cheeses. The white Chateau Rioublanc is very aromatic with an intense and fine nose of acacia blossom, pear, peach, citrus and a hint of minerality. It’s fresh and round on the palate with lovely balance. Great with seafood and fresh fish it’s also good with salamis, pâté, cold meats, poultry, creamy pasta dishes and goats cheese. Both these wines are available at Bordeaux-Undiscovered for £9.99 a bottle. Enjoy! Vintage Delights If you adore revamped vintage furniture, you will be amazed at what The Lavender House has to offer... Tell us about Lavender House, what inspired you to open and did you have a vision of how it would be? I had always looked for pieces of furniture with character, which I had then painted for my own home. I was also always passionate about the French look. Ali and I met 4 years ago and discovered we shared the same passions and over a cup of coffee one morning, we decided to go into business together. We booked a place at the Corn Hall in Cirencester for their Christmas market and 10 days later we had chosen the company name, sourced stock, painted our finds and nervously decorated a 6ft pitch with our new pieces. By lunch time, that same day we had sold all our stock. Little did we envisage we would be opening a shop 3 years later! Has this vision altered over the years; growing organically or have you retained your core goals? At first it was all about the furniture and then people wanted to buy the lovely trinkets we used as display. From there we set out to source beautiful French style lamps, cushions, clocks, vases, gifts accessories that complemented the furniture. Our passion for the French /Mediterranean/Scandinavian look has, therefore, developed and grown beyond just the furniture. Why do you think there has been such resurgence in people wanting to upcycle furniture? New pieces of furniture can be expensive and not always as well made as the furniture from yesteryear. In this present climate, people are often loathe to invest in anything new when they have good solid pieces that they have already bought or inherited. However, the ongoing trend is very much the light, muted tones of Provence which works well in people’s homes – especially if rooms are dark and need lightening. This is where our painting service comes into play. It is more economical to give a piece

of furniture a facelift rather than buying a new piece – the result is a brand new look, in a well-made piece which already has character and a history of its own. What has been you most exciting project to date and is there anything that you would love to work on? Every project we tackle is different and exciting/ Whether we are turning an orange, pine kitchen into a cream and lavender Provencal dream; sourcing and painting all the furniture for a Scandinavian style bedroom; or designing a new look and style for any of the pieces we sell in our shop. We have also gone into our client’s homes to offer advice and inspiration which is fun and have even been asked to travel to France to give a French feel to a clients existing furniture and to help interior design a home! What type of customer do you most attract? Mostly women who share our passion for the same look, and especially those who are time poor and who need help to transform their home. We love your grey console table; are you able to source similar pieces should something be sold? We are always on the look-out for new pieces as most of what we find and supply are one off’s. We have a long shopping list from people who have asked us to source pieces for them, which we are very happy to do and we can sometimes find the same or similar pieces for clients. Can customers commission you? Definitely – we are always painting pieces for people from their homes or looking for that special piece that the client just doesn’t have the time to search for themselves.

It must be wonderful to make a hobby your career, what is the best part about running The Lavender House? The passion for what we do hasn’t died off and we enjoy searching for pieces both here and abroad as well as sourcing all the wonderful smaller bits that we sell in the shop. We also love the painting and creating of the new pieces. We have a great team of helpers and are therefore able to be there to collect the children from school and to spend time with them in the holidays – so the flexibility is a massive plus too. Where do you see Lavender House in 5 years time? Alongside the furniture, interiors and gifts, we also serve excellent, freshly brewed coffees and delicious homemade cakes. Therefore, not only can people come to see the one off pieces of furniture we create, but also come and enjoy a coffee, collect a gift or greetings card. We also have parking right outside so there is no charge for parking, either. People comment on the lovely, friendly atmosphere too, which is immensely flattering. Perhaps we could use the same formula to open a sister shop elsewhere... Who knows! We think that would be a wonderful idea. 000 Shelle Duffin Gifford Circus July 14:Layout 1

Shelle Duffin experiences the latest performance from the most unique circus in town... Last night I dreamt of running away with the circus. This may sound a little familiar to a dream many of us had during childhood, but I very nearly did it. I would’ve been gone in a flash if it wasn’t for the small issue of now being a girl in her twenties who can scarcely balance on one leg, struggles to hold a handful of oranges without dropping at least one, and has difficulty riding a horse in anything other than the upright position. Unfortunately, I feel my only contributing talent would be to sell candyfloss and even that comes with no guarantee that it wouldn’t be devoured before purchase – and so the fantasy lives on as a dream. No summer spent in the Cotswolds would be complete without a trip to Gifford’s Circus, which over the past 13 years has become a local tradition to attend. I normally go at least twice every season and each experience is unique and even more bonkers than the last in the picturesque setting of their various locations. Created in 2000 by talented Oxford graduate Nell Gifford and her husband Toti, they have bought local village greens to life with a magical sellout show of good old-fashioned entertainment which truly represents the ‘Best of British’. With this year’s tour of 136 JULY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

Gifford’s Circus ‘The Thunders’ in full swing, they’ve already charmed the crowded audiences who’ve flocked from all four corners of the Cotswolds to see their favourite circus. Directed by the brilliant and award-winning Cal McCrystal, this year’s production has been injected with more creativity, cleverness and hilarity than ever before, causing the show to be labelled as their best yet. We are taken on a journey back in time to ancient Greece, surrounding tales of myths, a curse on true love and a plague of spots; lots of spots in all forms, shapes and sizes. The theme is brought to life by the artistic décor, glamorous outfits and magical flamboyancy of each individual act. Supported by the charming music of the live band lead by our favourite, although rather conservative maestro, the two-hour spell-binding performance leaves the audience enchanted. We welcome the return of old favourites like Tweedy the Clown (causing chaos wherever he goes); a lap of honour by Brian the goose; the gravity-defying acrobats, The Godfathers, whose shoulder reflexes leave you perching on the edge of your seat; the hunky, cheekychappy and highly flammable juggler brothers, Bibi and Bichu; and the lovely Nancy Trotter Landry with her many white doves. Alongside the thundering

hooves of Nell’s beautiful horses is Herman, the adorable little spotted Shetland pony, who leads the curse of the spots with new friends Tarquin and Domino the Dalmatians, and Griffin and Hades, who were both rescues from Birmingham Dogs Home and became part of the circus team last year. Brian the goose even has a new pal, a turkey called The Oracle, both of which are battling it out for their place off the dinner table this Christmas. Tweedy, the Cotswolds much-loved clown leads the show with humour and hilarity aimed at all ages, allowing adults to revel in the fun and excitement on a more grown-up wavelength. No performance at Gifford’s goes by without encouraging a little audience participation, and this year, you are invited to be part of the magic from beginning to end, with Tweedy, of course at the helm the majority of the time. Without giving too much away, pack your waterproofs, and if you’re a strapping buff male with plans to still reproduce, whatever you do, avoid looking Tweedy in the eye at all costs if you wish your pride to remain intact! No circus visit would be complete without some memorabilia to remind you of the magical experience of Gifford’s. During the interval when you’re tucking into the delicious homemade Victoria

presents ‘The Thunders’ sponge and gooey chocolate brownies, or fresh stone baked pizzas served up in one the famous burgundy painted wagons, be sure to stop by the shop. Here you will find hand-painted circus mugs, exclusively produced by the renowned potter, Emma Bridgewater, who also happens to be Nell’s sister, and a copy of Nell’s new book ‘Gifford’s Circus – The First Ten Years’ alongside her first publication ‘Josser – the secret life of a circus girl’. If you dream of running away with the circus, I strongly advise you find room for these on your bookshelves. Like any good experience, you never want it to end. But at Gifford’s, the curtain might come down, but the fun sure isn’t over yet – great news for those who like me, still haven’t given up all hope of enrolling in the circus. As you walk out of one theatrical tent,

“NOTHING CONJURES UP A HEALTHY APPETITE FOR A HEARTY FEED MORE THAN A TWO-HOUR DOSE OF RAUCOUS EXCITEMENT AND ENDLESS LAUGHTER”

you are instantly invited into another as Gifford’s welcomes you to dine in their very own pop-up restaurant, Circus Sauce. Nothing conjures up a healthy appetite for a hearty feed more than a two-hour dose of raucous excitement and endless laughter, and as soon the smell of home cooked food from the in-house kitchen reaches your nostrils, the magical allurement of Gifford’s is in full swing once more. There’s nothing more thrilling than going backstage following a performance and meeting the stars of the show who inspire you, and at Circus Sauce you’re in for a real treat. As we settle around the oak tables surrounded by twinkling candlelight, countless pieces of Emma Bridgewater, and beautifully decorated circus tapestries, any momentary quietness is soon replaced with mischievous laughter as Tweedy walks through the door with fellow circus acts in tow. Throughout the three-course banquet conversation is lively, mainly revolving around Tweedy who never appears to fall out of character. The exhilarating vibe of Gifford’s continues throughout the

evening with even the chefs performing their very own act from their culinary stage. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed as artistes and audience discuss the talented display of creative eccentricity performed in the show – great for those looking to pick up any tips. Dishes served consist of wholesome comfort food, made with seasonal ingredients sourced, foraged and farmed locally, which is evident in the refreshing, vibrant flavours in each course. A threecourse banquet is reasonably priced at £25 for adults, £14.50 for children, and because they are not licenced, diners are invited to bring their own booze free of charge. When the evening eventually draws to a close, there’s a strong feeling of reluctance to leave the magic behind for the reality that stands just a short walk away. However with a long glorious summer ahead, there’s plenty of opportunity to visit Gifford’s on tour at one of the many picturesque destinations across the Cotswolds. Like any form of magic – you have to see it to believe it, and I strongly advise you to do so.

REVIEWED BY STEVEN LEE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROB WHEATMAN The Enchanted Tea Room is nestled under an archway in the busy high street of Cheltenham and is a great new venue for those of us that enjoy our tea and cakes. The menu consists of anything from a cup of tea and slice of toast right up to the ‘full on’ High Tea. On a recent visit I chose the high tea and asked if I could be seated in the private saloon as I had some serious reading to do. The main tearoom is tastefully decorated in a Victorian style and for those visiting for the first time you will hear the sounds of tweeting birds at the top of the stairs. There is also a well placed delightful seat for those in need of a brief respite after ascending the staircase. The female staff were very friendly and helpful as I seated myself on a comfortable sofa in preparation for my high tea. The tearoom serve an

Some facts you may not know about the drinking of tea The drinking of tea not only became a social event for the upper classes, it altered the time and manner in which they took tea. Afternoon Tea became the bridge between meals because many wouldn’t eat their evening meal until maybe 8pm. As such, Afternoon Tea became a ‘mini meal’ in itself.

Why is it called ‘high tea’? extensive list of teas including English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Fruit tea’s as well as a good selection of Coffee. Soon I heard the rattle of teacups and saucers as my piping hot English tea arrived. It was served in a nice china tea cup along with a stand crammed with freshly prepared sandwiches – coronation chicken, egg mayonnaise tuna and sweet corn. The cake plate caught my eye with some mouthwatering coffee as well as carrot cake and a traditional courgette and coconut cake with rose icing. No high tea would be complete without scones, cream and raspberry or strawberry jam and I wasn’t disappointed in this regard but confess to being rather full. Then as if I hadn’t eaten enough there was a top layer of petite fours – strawberryand pistachio macaroons. Ooh la la!!!

A possible explanation why this type of meal was called high tea is the fact that it was eaten at a table. In comparison, Afternoon Tea was taken whilst seating in low, comfortable chairs or sofas. Of course, soon after, the upper classes developed their own variation and also called it ‘high tea’. It was a meal that could be eaten when their servants were away or not available, as it was so easy to prepare. The upper class ‘high tea’ involved the amalgamation of Afternoon Tea and high tea, with the addition of pigeon, veal, salmon and fruit.

Yorke Construction Ltd team up with The Princes Trust to deliver the first ‘Get into Construction’ to be held in Gloucester

Yorke Construction & The Princes Trust Graduation Event Yorke Construction have been very busy over the past two weeks after combining with The Princes Trust to aid some of the Gloucestershire’s under privileged young adults. Richard Yorke MD of Yorke Construction, has consistently been providing an apprenticeship scheme for young adults. After meeting with The Princes Trust, Richard realised that there was more that he could be offering to young adults in the area. Following a brief meeting, at a separate event, plans begun for Yorke Construction to hold their own ‘Get into’ scheme. The Prince’s Trust offer ‘Get into’ programmes to disadvantaged young people across the country, in a wide variety of industries, but this is the first ‘Get into Construction’ course to be held in Gloucester. Richard explained “A few months ago I was invited to a Prince’s Trust event, I was introduced to a young lady that had set up a successful business following a Prince’s Trust programme. I instantly knew that Yorke Construction could offer something similar. As a smaller building contractor

there were some initial doubts, due to the fact that this is the first time we have ever attempted something to this scale. These doubts soon went away as the course begun and the students really brought in to what we were trying to achieve.” “Personally the whole experience has been brilliant and I would like to thank the Princes Trust and a big thank you and best wishes to all the young adults who have taken part.” The course was based around the con¬struction of two miniature housing structures. One structure was made solely from timber with the other from block and brick, this allowed the students to learn techniques in both carpentry and bricklaying. Pat Rowhan, Get into programme

Executive at The Prince’s Trust,:“These are continuing to be tough times for our young people with high youth unemployment in the UK. At The Trust, we know the damaging impact unemployment can have on a young person’s self-esteem. Working with Yorke Construction has meant that they have gained valuable industry related experience and as practical people who enjoy manual work the construction industry gives them a real chance to progress in their careers.” “The programme is intensive and delivers CSCS training and card aswell as vocational experience that could make all the difference when job-hunting in the construction industry. Young people recieve sup-port from The Trust following the course and three or four move onto work or training.” Curtis Motherwell a student that took part in the course added “This Course has helped me to engage with other young people. It has helped me to build my confidence and social skills. I would recommend this course, to other young people, being in the same situation as I was.”

July brings many sporting events to our television screens: the World Cup will be reaching a climax, Wimbledon will be in full swing; the Tour de France will be commencing in the North East; and the Commonwealth Games is due to commence in Glasgow. With such a choice, I’m sure there is something for everyone to be involved with. I will have to pick and choose as I don’t have the passive income that allows me to sit in front of the television all day, especially as the tennis runs from 11am and long into to the night; the Tour de France and the Commonwealth Games is throughout the day and night. You couldn’t even get away with recording it as it would take you weeks to catch up. You may recall me telling you about the charity cycle ride to Amsterdam that I was embarking on. Well, I have returned and can safely say that I have had a small insight into what the cyclists in the Tour have to put up with. Of course, the only difference being that we only had to do 90 miles to cycle in one day and we were on English terrain, and not the Alps. I could not believe how much a relatively small incline can affect you. It was like cycling through wet tar; I had no answer to the hills – it felt like the

hills were laughing in my face! The professionals will have to cycle so much further in one day, on steeper hills and do it all back to back with very little rest in between. I appreciated what they did before, but even more so now. And yes, those saddles do hurt... The World Cup’s latter stages will be upon us now, but will England be featuring? Of course, that is the burning question. The hopefuls amongst us will be confident – I am an optimist and really want the nation to have something to cheer for, so would like England to have a good tournament and progress through to the knock out stages. My expectations are low right now, so anything is a bonus, I feel. Andy Murray will be defending his title on home turf for the first time since his dramatic win last year. He has had a rollercoaster year with injuries, loss of form and a change of coach. Let’s all reach for the strawberries and cream and don the white clothing and cheer him on. I have never been to Wimbledon but would love to go… Invite anyone? @duffo16

Prince Harry’s team had the support of two top professional English players: Satnam Dhillon and Malcom Borwick, who managed to score against tough opposition by staying in play. William scored two goals in quick succession using good horsemanship and speed, much to the excitement of the crowd. William’s team remained ahead throughout the game, perhaps to be expected with one of the highest rated international players on his side, John Paul Clarkin.

It was a fantastic day for Princes William and Harry at Cirencester Park Polo Club this past Fathers Day. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere, electric. William and Harry were competing raise money for their respective charities: Centrepoint, Child Bereavement UK and Well Child. The public turned up to show their support in large numbers, hoping for a fast and competitive game. They weren’t disappointed. Both Princes took to the pitch mounted on matching greys for the first chukka. Harry’s teamwere in green, sponsored by BMG Financial Services, started with a one and a half goal advantage. Prince William, playing as number four in white, had teamed up with the two legendary New Zealand cousins, John Paul Clarkin (number one player in New Zealand on a eight goal handicap) and Simon Keyte. Their team, sponsored by Maserati, managed a quick goal within one minute.

The teams played four, seven and a half minute chukkas. Each player would have used up to four to five horses to play the whole game, with two grooms to care for their horses. It’s left to the grooms to make sure the correct horses are prepared for its chukka. The final score saw Prince William and the Kiwi’s beat the English players by eight goals to seven and a half. This was followed by a fast, forward moving game with great competition between the Princes. Another highlight, was seeing The Duchess of Cambridge turn up to support her husband with their son, Prince George, on Fathers day. Of course, the paparazzi were far more interested in snapping pictures ofPrince George’s first steps in public than the Princes game! Prince William received the best players trophy and John-Paul Clarkins best mount, coincidently also called Maserati, was nominated champion pony. Overall, the day was a great success. The Princes play a number of charity matches throughout the summer to help raise money and awareness for good causes. This event was sponsored by Jerudong Park, Maserati, BMG Financial Service and La Martina. For further fixtures at Cirencester Park Polo Club please look at their website. www.cirencesterpolo.co.uk

A LIFE OF

LUXURY Our fitness writer Lucy Denver shows us how to make a seamless transition from a gruelling military-led bootcamp to a high-end luxury drinks reception in style. Challenge accepted! Slogging through pools of mud, being bossed around and doing press ups until my arms shake? It’s no secret I like hard work but that seems a bit excessive, even for me. As a result, you can probably guess what I’m going to say: I went on a bootcamp. Even more surprisingly, I LOVED it. Every sweaty minute and every last burpee (and believe me, there were many). What’s more is that upon exiting the vast oak doors of The Colloquy, the sumptuous base for the Xtreme Luxury Bootcamp, I headed straight to the drinks reception of a global Luxury Law Summit hosted by the New York Times. From one end of the luxury scale to the other in 12 hours: how does one dress for such occasions? And why should you embark on a bootcamp in the first place? To go from bear crawling through a field (before breakfast, I kid you not) to a five-star hotel is no mean feat but if you’re up to the challenge, here’s how to do it (and, more importantly, how to dress for it).

such luxury was that our team of military personal trainers expected 100% effort from us at all times, and there were penalties for slacking off (which luckily we didn’t have to face, because no one dared try it). We were up and running by 8am, and by lunchtime we’d completed upwards of 200 sit ups and numerous exercises including the ‘bleep test’, which brought back memories of sprinting across the school hall in a gym slip and plimsolls (I love plimsolls. I hope they have a fashion revival soon). We worked our socks off, sweated buckets and most definitely earned our lunch which was prepared for us KETTLE-BELLES by a talented ex-RAF chef and was so One primary reason why I had a good feeling delicious we all went back for seconds. about this bootcamp was the name: ‘Xtreme Xtreme Bootcamps believe in quality nutrition Luxury’. Those who know me will vouch that as much as exercise: “If we don’t give you I’m liable to be pretty enough energy, how can we expect you to grumpy if I can’t have push your bodies in our classes?” says Zoe, a hot shower and a owner of Xtreme. Wise words indeed, and as decent night’s sleep an advocate of encouraging women to eat (surely that can’t just properly, one that I was very glad to hear. be me?), and this Over the course of the weekend our group bootcamp was located – which ranged from journalists to triathletes in the picturesque to Miss England competitors – ran, crawled, Herefordshire push upped, boxed and kettlebelled our way countryside. CROSSFIT TO COCKTAILS With my stint over, it was time for my next engagement: a drinks reception at the upmarket ME London Hotel. It was like an extreme version of the typical female dilemma of going to the gym and catching up with a friend for coffee or a cocktail afterwards. What does one wear? Men can get away with wearing sportswear for almost any occasion: Pete Howe, athlete and owner of CrossFit Taunton (pictured above) wears a Reebok CrossFit Triblend Tee and Performance Shorts with Adidas Adipower Weightlifting Shoes. Pete wouldn’t look out of place in his CrossFit box or a coffee shop. What about us ladies? Well, I have sourced the perfect bootcamp outfits for you. Say Goodbye to your

Mummy Tummy Fitness expert and new mum, Jodie Molyneux offers her top tips to banish that mummy tummy for good... Having a baby is truly amazing in every way. Our bodies grow this little miracle inside of us and we are truly blessed to be able to bring a new life into the world. I look at my little baby girl and I constantly think to myself: “WOW - We made her! What an absolute treasure.” It makes me go all squishy inside. So, when we look at our mummy tummies, or as I like to call it my little girls sleeping bag, it is just a very small sacrifice we have to make, unless of course you are one of the lucky few who bounces back into shape straight away. As a personal trainer, I realise that there is immense pressure on us ladies to get back to our pre-pregnancy shape. Following my 6 week check with the GP, I set about gradually working on building up my core strength and fitness levels. Gracie is now 20 weeks old and I feel fitter, my core strength is stronger and I am back into some (not all) of my pre-pregnancy clothes - Whoop! When you are thinking of getting back into exercise after having a baby, the first thing you need to think is how your tummy has responded to pregnancy and birth. Your abdominal muscles may have separated during and after pregnancy. This is called ‘diastasis’ - which isn’t as scary as it sounds. Around a third of women experience this, myself included, so don’t worry. At the end of the day, your tummy had to expand to allow your little one to grow. If you want to check to see if you have this separation, or not, try this: Lie on your back with your feet on the floor. Bend your knees and raise your head and shoulders. Place you fingers above and below your belly 148 JULY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE

button to see if you can find a gully between your tummy muscles. Remember, you should avoid all sit-up type exercises until this gap has closed to less than two fingers in width. Once you reach this point you can begin to focus on your core. Your core is like a central pillar of strength. Imagine you are wearing a girdle or an internal corset of muscles. Once these muscles are strong, you will be able to gradually build up a wider variety exercises. Need some help or mutual support? Well, in July I am starting two new Buggy Bootcamp classes in Cheltenham and Bredon (near Tewkesbury). These classes will allow you to bring your baby along with you whilst you get fit. We will target all of those areas you want to tone up, increase your energy levels and self- esteem and meet other mums, too. It is my aim to inspire mums to live healthy, happy and balanced lives. It doesn’t matter what your fitness levels are; I will help you to learn how to exercise safely, teach

you correct exercise techniques and we’ll have fun at the same time. My classes will be taking place on a Wednesday at CLC sports centre at 12.30 (from 9th July) and on a Thursday on Bredon playing fields at 11am (from 10th July). For further info please feel free to give me a call on 07787 561 303 or drop me an email Jodie@hartfitness.co.uk

Motoring Eric Barton takes a lingering look at the new Porsche Centre in Tewkesbury

History has a habit of repeating itself. No truer situation than the legacy of Dick Lovett and the brand new gleaming Porsche Centre in Tewkesbury. The Dick Lovett legend is a beautifully crafted obsession with performance motor cars going back to 1959. It started as a two-man operation called Ross Motors selling motorcycles in Leicester. Dick Lovett, supported by his wife Stella, had a real zeal for sports cars. At that time they lived above the business, on hand to cater for enquiries from all over the UK. In 1966 Dick relocated the business to the South-West and started trading under his own name from the family home near Swindon. The business simply grew, got much bigger and now Dick Lovett is the official franchise holders for Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche, Lotus, BMW, MINI and KTM. It’s an automotive empire that employs 530 people, stretching the length of the M4 corridor from Hungerford to Swindon, Bristol and Cardiff. And now they’re in Tewkesbury. The fourth Dick Lovett Porsche Centre is scheduled to open in Tewkesbury on the 14th July. It’s a direct and incisive move enabling Dick Lovett to better serve customers in Gloucestershire, Cheltenham and the Cotswolds. This new development brings the total Porsche Centre network in the UK and Ireland to thirty five. This really does empahsise a robust investment in the Porsche business and the local region in particular.

LEGACY Spread over two acres, Porsche Centre Tewkesbury features a twenty car showroom together with a ten ramp workshop and an M.O.T. bay. It’s a truly imposing building hewed from the very foundation that Porsche and Dick Lovett covet; it’s modern, beautifully sculpted and totally eye-catching…a fitting automotive altar to the Porsche brand. And because they’re smart they located the Centre to have easy access to the M5, Gloucester and Cheltenham. Visitors to this new shrine will also benefit from access to a Direct Dialogue bay, which is a dedicated area where a car can receive an immediate on-the-spot technical examination by Porsche-trained Technicians prior to any necessary work. In a sense it’s like turning up at the doctor to get a diagnosis. This spanking new, glitzy Centre will also have a vast range of new and pre-owned Porsche Approved cars, servicing, parts, a service loan fleet and a full range of Porsche demonstrators. It’s the ultimate try before you buy experience. And of course because it’s Porsche there’s a local collection and delivery service. We all know the rigours of, ‘can you come and collect your car now?…blah blah’. A real pain. Not the case at Porsche Centre

Tewkesbury. Their collection and delivery service ensures any servicing or repairs are conducted ‘fuss free’ to the customer. The showroom is to my mind a small piece of automotive art in itself. It’s a very calming place to be. Quality drips from the walls like diamonds from a mine. The showroom display also hosts a wide array of items from the Porsche Design Driver’s Selection range of clothing and accessories. In addition, Porsche Tequipment personalisation options are also available; everything from floor mats to Aerokit. And all fitted on-site. The Dick Lovett story has been a shimmering success, fuelled by the very passion I’ve been banging on about. Today, it delivers through this new Porsche Centre in Tewkesbury, increased levels of enthusiasm and gusto that can only be a good thing for the customer. So, if you’re in the market for an Approved Used or shiny new Porsche… then look no farther. This Month with Kate Justice

Volunteers, anyone...? This month, Kate Justice, discusses the trials and tribulations of being a working mother while the husband is across the pond... I’m no stranger to life as a single parent; Husband is often away on business or having to leave the country to renew his VISA (he’s American). But this last stint has been quite a while and I’m afraid the lawn is getting WAY too long. Odd, as it may seem to site that issue first, but the weather has been such that I can practically see the grass growing. Yes, I could probably mow it myself, but I HATE that job (and I might accidentally chop my feet off). As a result, I am on a continuous quest to find volunteers. A volunteer saves me fifty odd quid, at least once a week. But it is a big ask and there simply aren’t enough people. I recently started a new job and spent the first few days assessing all my new colleagues for their lawn mowing prowess. By the end of week one, I had to provide proof that I am happily married and that the phrase, “don’t suppose you fancy coming to mow my lawn”, means exactly that and is not a euphemism. Gawd! Other issues that have cropped up

include fixing the leaky outside tap and unblocking the downstairs toilet. I have a friend who is a plumber, which is wonderful, but imagine my shock when I arrived home from work to find my child minder had rushed off to sort a family emergency, dropping my children off en route. Nick (the plumber) had ended up looking after them all day. Awkward? Yes, very much so. Getting everyone in the family to all their different events and appointments

plumber to run my son, Will, to football practice... but showed him the lawn mower instead. Poor man. We’ve made a few changes: piano lessons have been put on hold, a school dad has semi adopted Will with regard to weekend sport and Libbi, our daughter has been picked up from ballet by a succession of different besties for the past seven weeks. It’s all going fine – there’s only been one occasion that NO ONE turned up to collect them from cricket.

“GETTING EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY TO ALL THEIR DIFFERENT EVENTS AND APPOINTMENTS IS ALSO A MEGA CHALLENGE. ANYONE WITH CHILDREN WITH BE FAMILIAR WITH THE MILITARY LEVEL PRECISION REQUIRED TO PUT THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM TOGETHER.” is also a mega challenge. Anyone with children with be familiar with the military level precision required to put the after school program together. Ours was designed when both parents and both grandparents were available. My poor dad has been ill, so is not driving... leaving myself and mother to do ALL the running around! We’ve discovered that with just two of us, it actually can’t be done. For a nano second I thought about asking

the

That was a catastrophic melee of mother thinking it would be me, me thinking it would be another parent and cricket being cancelled anyway. How did I not notice when I dropped them off ? Apart from that - and a slightly alarming moment when they came home from school with a leaflet for Childline - things are going OK... I’m told everyone was given a leaflet... Vacuuming and cleaning of the bathrooms have all but vanished from my life. The animals are slightly taking over the house but in general we are keeping appointments, eating three square meals a day (well, maybe two) and have clean-ish clothes on most of the time. Husband may be gone a few more weeks - I won’t get started on the upheaval to the family and the emotional side of our situation. However, at least for this week, the lawn is reasonably short: In a moment of great independence I rolled out the mower and did it myself (and I am still all in one piece!)
