EDITOR’S FOREWORD ELCOME to the November ‘vintage’ edition of Cotswold Style. After enjoying Guy Fawkes celebrations, it will be time this month to reflect. Remembrance Sunday, which is 9th November, is a time to think of all our wonderful service men and women who are still serving on the front line protecting us from current world conflicts, as well as those who have died in action over the past. We mustn’t forget that the Cotswolds is an active part of current military action with bases throughout the county, including Brize Norton where are mortally wounded troops are returned home and of course all the staff working terribly hard to combat terrorism at GCHQ in Cheltenham. On Tuesday 11th November, Armistice Day, Nicholas McCarthy, an extraordinary one-handed pianist will be performing a concert of “Music in Remembrance”, marking the 1914 centenary of WWI, at the beautiful Pittville Pump Room in Cheltenham. We have a pair of tickets to win to this concert so please see the article in the magazine. The Pittville Pump Room has been the setting of our fabulous fashion shoot this month, organised by new Fashion Editor, Yvette Brentnall. Yvette has taken us back to the glorious vintage era of 40s and 50s glamour with stunning furs and hats amongst the dresses; appropriate this month for those dressing up for the second biggest racing meet of the year at Cheltenham, ‘The Open’. We meet Cheltenham Racecourse’s Managing Director, Ian Renton, who is in charge of the £45 million re-development taking place at the course and Betlive Radio’s Nigel Aplin, shares some tips and inside knowledge of who to bet on during the event. Continuing our vintage and clothing theme, we also meet this month Joanne McKerlie who has launched Downton Abbey at Home. A wonderful selection of furniture and accessories that have been photographed on the actual set of the TV programme and Victoria Suffield, who has recently opened The Hambledon shop at Cowley Manor. She has an array of stunning clothes for men and women, with some new labels you may not be aware of. Her snuggly jumpers are perfect for this changing weather! Our spotlight on Cirencester showcases what is happening in the capital of the Cotswolds. There are many extremely successful shops and businesses throughout the town all of which are worth visiting, especially if you are looking for some different presents this Christmas. Whilst there, why not enjoy some R&R and pop into the recently opened King’s Head Hotel in the centre of the town and enjoy a lovely lunch or overnight stay?

CIRENCESTER The capital of the Cotswolds irencester was the second largest town in Britain during Roman times. Today the former Corinium Dobunnorum is home to more than 18,000 people and a service centre for the thousands more who live in surrounding villages. In past years it was a very prosperous medieval wool town. Cirencester’s market square is dominated by the Cathedral-like Parish Church of St. John Baptist (one of the largest in England). The large south porch with its impressive fan vaulting was built about 1490. The town contains many interesting buildings spanning several centuries. Cirencester’s market town status was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. Traders still set up their stalls every Monday and Friday and since 1999 the town has had its own farmers’ market. Crafts and antiques markets are also regular attractions at The Corn Hall. This month we look at some of the fabulous businesses that operate in the town:

Cotswold Ring Maker Des began his apprenticeship in London’s famous Hatton Garden nearly 30 years ago. Over the years he’s gained a wide variety of experience in the jewellery trade. As a Jewellery Designer he has worked on many pieces with his specialty in wedding and engagement rings. No job though is beyond his capabilities and he’s also keeping up technology wise, with his own 3D printer to work in-house on jewellery CAD Designs. CAD is short for Computer Aided Design. Computer software programmes enable Des to make a design and produce an interactive 3D model – which can be adjusted to customers’ specifications. He will then export your design to produce a physical wax model to create a cast for your intended piece. As well as Jewellery Design, Des offers a full range of jewellery services from the shop and studio. So if you are looking for adjustments, repairs or any other service, please get in touch. www.cotswoldringmaker.com

Business

It’s all about living in the Cotswolds Q

Emma Logan meets Adam Brown, co-owner of Cotswold Living and the Painted Furniture Company, based in Cirencester

Cotswold Living is a business with a great reputation. How long has the company been established and who owns it? Cotswold Living is a small family business which was started by Adam and Rosy Brown in 2005. Both are still very active in the business on a daily basis and the great thing about being small and flexible is, we can source the furniture which we consider a little bit different and a little bit better than the norm.

Q

Tell us more about the ranges you offer for the home? We offer a full range of Bedroom, living room and dining room furniture. We usually have 10-12 bedroom sets on display at any one time and about the same number of different Dining Table sets. Of course within each of our collections there is a wide choice of pieces from small nests of tables and TV units to full Dressers. Oak furniture and hardwood furniture has historically been our specialty, and I think it will always be a favorite with our customers but the exciting thing recently has been the development in quality painted furniture. Painted Furniture is now a significant part of our portfolio.

Q

Do you design your furniture yourself and where is it manufactured? Much of our furniture is designed and made in the UK and we have a factory in the South West, which produces our

Island Breeze collection and the new Oxford Collection. These are two of our painted furniture collections, which have a lot of colour and styling options and this is only achievable when you have each piece specifically built for each customer. We also have a good selection of what we term our off the peg furniture, these collections won’t usually have all the options of the bespoke built furniture but they do offer great value for money.

Q

Two years ago you started the Painted Furniture Company. Tell us more about it? The Painted Furniture Company was started after we developed our first high quality painted furniture collection called, not surprisingly, the Cotswold Collection. Up until then painted furniture had always been something of the poor relation in furniture terms, available in any colour so long as it was white and usually built using low-end materials. We took a different approach and starting with a hand-built, oak furniture collection, we developed a range that allows customers to choose from a whole range of contemporary colours, which we adapt for the interior trends of each season. The success of the Painted Furniture Co. brand has been phenomenal and in less than two years we have seen it grow from nothing to a strong business and a recognised brand in itself with customers all over the UK.

Q

The range is contemporary. What is the choice of colours you offer customers? All of the different painted furniture collections are available not just in the classic White or Ivory but also a whole range of modern pastel and earth tones, sage greens, earthy greys and blue tones which are the serious contenders at the moment. All of the colours have

interesting names like Sea Mist and Moonlight Grey and if our customers have a specific requirement we can match colours from any of the major paint manufacturers such as Farrow & Ball or Fired Earth.

Q

Do you sell painted furniture ‘off the peg’ or does it have to be commissioned? Any of the collections where our clients choose the colour or select specific size or style options for their furniture are built to order at our UK factories and will take around 6 weeks to complete. Our off the peg collections are usually available from UK stock and can sometimes be delivered within a few days. We try and have something for every taste and every budget.

Q

Do you provide children’s furniture too? We are very excited to be launching a brand new Children’s bedroom collection for the Winter 2014 season. We’ve spent a long time developing a collection that will appeal to the widest range of ages, so it needed to be fun but not too babyish! The first preview pictures will be available soon and the full launch will be just in time for Christmas. www.cotswoldliving.co.uk www.paintedfurnitureco.co.uk

From Home to Business Interior Designer Kelly James transforms a bed and breakfast into the new home for The Regency Clinic PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOWPLAY Being an established business in Cheltenham, Hales Road has been home to The Regency Clinic for many years. Due to expansion, the business has made the move from 76 to 147 Hales Road to accommodate their growing health care practice. They are a team of specialists who work together in a unique way to provide a long-term solution for pain relief and to restore good health. The owner Rob Grace wanted to keep within the same community and offer more treatments and additional parking. This was the perfect opportunity to rebrand the business that married perfectly with a new interior design scheme. Shadowplay Design was part of the interiors project from before completion; they spent time discussing what was important for their business and clients and from a design aspect, the architecture of the building. The building is beautiful and full of original features that made the job a true pleasure to be involved with. Taking inspiration from the new logo, the colour scheme was to include blue and white and build on those colours to create a welcoming environment with the brief of being clean, crisp and professional. Introducing the colour teal, accessories, rich floorboards and striped stair runners, this property feels very much like a grand home. The reception has decorative cornicing and ceiling roses that any historian would be

proud of and fall in love with. The large, square bay windows flood the room with light, with bespoke skeleton artwork produced by Shadowplay Design. Charles Eames’ chairs and a wall graphic remind you of their motto: Relieving Pain, Restoring Health. The hallway is very inviting; Farrow and Ball paint colours have been used here and throughout the building. The hall not only leads you to the reception area but to 2 of the 7 treatment rooms and the gym. The gym was once a large dining room and generous kitchen that has been knocked through to create a spacious area where

Pilates, yoga classes and personal training takes place. The petrol blue coloured flooring sits perfectly with the new brand colours and the bright walls offer a blank canvas for the mind. A glass wall for the corridor that leads to the x-ray room was built and it borrows light from the gym to provide an open plan feel. The treatment rooms are all bathed in light from large picture windows and block-colour flooring with dark charcoal grey through to light china blue. There have been two key elements to this project: • Practical planning where Shadowplay was involved with making the floor plan work for the running of the business, from considerations such as plumbing constraints, using as much natural light as possible to knocking walls down. • Designing the interior space such as paint colours, commissioning bespoke and choosing furniture, lighting, flooring and accessories etc. Kelly James from Shadowplay says, “This project has been the perfect balance between the practical and aesthetically pleasing sides to interior design and in my opinion they complement each other; you can’t have one without the other!” To discuss your interior design project contact Kelly James at Shadowplay Design on 01242 253700.

Behind the Garden Gate This month our Cheltenham Based Media Horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, turns the handle of a garden gate with glitz.... ondon – a far cry from the bellowing grasses and wistful poppies of the Cotswolds – or is it? As I looked around the verges of Cheltenham over the summer, taking in the expanses of multi-coloured patchwork quilts of wildflowers newly sown around Cox’s Meadow and The Honeybourne Line to name a few, I was reminded of a horticultural surprise of a five star nature about a 90 mile drive away in the Easterly direction.

Not any ordinary garden gate, this is the astronomical art deco polished, box lined entrance to The Savoy Hotel in London. The iconic hotel was built 125 years ago by Richard D’Oyly Carte following the success of his neighbouring Savoy Theatre which housed the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan. I have a great passion for this musical partnership, with a G&S spattered CV: performer in many of their works (obviously not in the 1880s not quite that old!), one time member of

The Cotswold Savoyards, owner of rabbit named Gilbert and grower of a vine from W. S. Gilbert’s garden which has actually in 2014 provided me with its first grape harvest! I could go on about books and other items collected over the years and could write an article alone on

the lives and works of Gilbert & Sullivan, however I will attempt to keep to the horticultural topic in hand and return to gardening glamour. Where the Thames meets the Embankment having set off from its long journey from Gloucestershire, it appears that one river is not enough for The Savoy and this year has seen the hotel lead an initiative called ‘The River of Flowers’. This is the capital’s first ever central wildflower walk and sees areas including the courtyard garden at the back of The Savoy turned over in part to environmentally friendly wildflower patches. So just as Richard D’Oyly Carte sowed the seeds of success for Gilbert & Sullivan, now his pride and joy is busy sowing seeds of another kind. Who knew that behind the stone and concrete partnership of ‘the big smoke’, little cornflowers were collaborating? Made up of native flowers, the wildflower mixes that have been planted along parts of The Thames include field scabious (beloved by the butterflies) and corn chamomile. Bird’s foot trefoil also joins the garden guest list, a little fellow prevalent in The Cotswolds due to its love of chalk grassland but clearly happy taking a break in the big city. The bird’s foot analogy refers to the shape of the seed pods, also known as Granny’s toenails! A member of the pea family, look at its flower and you’ll see the sweet pea and gorse resemblance. At first thought, it does seem strange to partner the natural often messy wildflower mix with the formal London planting of box, canna lilies and palm

”THIS IS THE CAPITAL’S FIRST EVER CENTRAL WILDFLOWER WALK AND SEES AREAS INCLUDING THE COURTYARD GARDEN AT THE BACK OF THE SAVOY TURNED OVER IN PART TO ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WILDFLOWER PATCHES” trees that have taken up residence around The Savoy but it works. It’s the lazy Sunday lie-in, in contrast to the formal day packed with engagements. It’s the letting down of ones hair after a society dinner dance, it’s England stripped back to nature, the wildflowers content in their native only private members’ club. Of course maintaining wildflower areas really is an important business, it’s our future. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust states that over 95% of our wildflower meadows have been lost in recent years. We just can’t afford to let this happen – don’t be surprised to see a little line of bees sometime soon, waving

flags made of cocktail sticks and postage stamps written on in bright orange pollen (that is if there is any remaining). Thankfully though, it seems the tides (or winds) are starting to turn and due to the efforts of councils such as Cheltenham Borough and institutions such as The Savoy, we may be able to save our sacred seedlings for future generations. Of course now it’s November and the flowers have chosen to bow out for a while, (well it must be exhausting living in the heart of London), their legacy now is a collection of seed heads and this is where we leave them, busy scattering and increasing their stock ready for next year. sturdier), with a trailer hitched on the back, to a paddock which was holding about 15 of our lovely rams. Thankfully, we had Millie and Meg the sheepdogs with us, as we managed to lose 15 Norfolk Horns at one point. They completely foxed us and had us running ragged for ages, whilst they hid out of the way. Finally our lovely sheep dogs caught up with them and we managed to deliver them their ram. It was important that the ewes had sight of him, as we’re on a bit of a schedule for the ‘magic’ to happen and in a big field like that, they might just not find each other! So that we know the ram has covered/mated with the ewe, we attach a ‘raddle’, a harness with a large, coloured chalk on the chest plate. The chalk marker is changed to a darker colour each week. Once a ewe becomes pregnant, the ram will stop trying to mate with her, so we can tell by the colour of the mark on the ewe’s rump when she is due to give

birth. It’s all very organised… who knew there was so much preparation involved? I often see Adam and the film crew whizzing about the farm on a weekly basis and it’s always very interesting and exciting to have this going on around us. I was thrilled when Adam invited me to come and watch him filming whilst he put our Whiteface Dartmoor ram out to his flock of girls for the first time. It was great to watch up-close and behind the scenes. It was blowing an absolute gale, with the rain pouring down almost horizontally… but from watching Adam you would never have known. What a professional!

upping’ is the farming term for the sheep mating season. Our Livestock Manager, Mike Caunter has everything planned to precision over the next 12 months. From late September, he’s been preparing for our spring opening next year on February 14th, when our live lambing demonstrations will begin. Last year we had 650 ewes, a combination of our commercial flock and beautiful rare breeds. All give birth in our multi-purpose demonstration barn, often in front of the public, with one of the display team talking our visitors through the process and at times assisting to ensure a safe delivery. We’ve had ewes give birth to 5, 6 or even 7 lambs at a time. As mum only has two teats, often just two of the lambs will be kept with her and the others will need to be bottle fed by members of the team. It’s all hands on deck but I think it’s fair to say that it’s our favourite time at the farm. We want to ensure that lambing will be underway when we open next year, then ideally staggering the arrivals out over a period of 8 weeks, as we wouldn’t be able to cope with a sudden influx. This way, the ewes and lambs will have our undivided attention when they arrive. I accompanied Mike this week to distribute the right rams to their awaiting ladies, which are usually in flocks of up to 20 rare breed ewes. We went out in our Polaris (like a golf buggy but much

Mind, Body & Soul We test some wonder treatments available in the Cotswolds, to get you ready for the festive party season and recuperate your mind, body and soul Massage at Tonic – Emma Logan Tonic, a newly established beauty salon, is committed to offering clients natural, results with driven treatments in a simple but luxurious environment. Many years experience within the industry means they can target treatments to suit, giving a personalised experience every time. If you want treatments that work, in a client-focused environment then Tonic is the salon for you. I experienced The Neroli Serenity Treatment - a relaxing massage using an essential oil massage candle. The treatment started with a hot towel, pressure point foot massage to relax the mind and stimulate the senses, which was followed by a full body, relaxing massage. This was focused on soothing the mind and body whilst providing a heavenly sensual experience. Once turned over onto my front, my therapist used hot mitts to cleanse the back, in preparation for a totally indulgent back of the body massage. Again this is focused on relaxation and following this, pressure was applied all over the body to bring the mind back to the room and aid further relaxation. The massage was finished with a touch of Phyto 152 - a stimulating, vivifying body cream around the shoulders. One is advised to let the oils soak in overnight for a great nights sleep. A delicious glass of cucumber and lemon infused water was needed to revive from the relaxed slumber! TONIC 10 Great Norwood Street Cheltenham GL50 2AN Tel: 01242 260425 www.tonic-cheltenham.com

pass judgment or comment on any treatment I haven’t experienced myself and with growing concern over the lines and wrinkles on my forehead area, I decided to take the plunge and get rid of them. Rachael Grey-Smart is the owner of Enhance Medical Centre in Cheltenham, which has been on the Promenade for 12 years and was the first clinic in the town. Rachael is a Registered General Nurse and one of the most experienced practioners in the county. Trained in Harley Street, Rachael has over 25 years of nursing experience and has specialised in the field of aesthetics and cosmetic surgery for more than 15 of these. As an Independent Nurse Prescriber, Rachael is legally able to prescribe treatments such as Botox® without supervision from a doctor, in accordance with the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council). Rachael I know, is known for her perfection, attention to detail, care and professional, discreet service and she has thoroughly researched all the products availabl, to safely deliver natural rejuvenation techniques and the best injectable products on the market. I visited her at her luxury Regency clinic in the centre of Cheltenham. Though I felt some initial trepidation about the Botox procedure, Rachael put me thoroughly at ease after we had been through an intensive consultation process. I then lay on her medical couch and frowned so she could see where she needed to inject and probably not even 3 minutes later, the treatment was finished – simple, painless and unbelievably quick without being rushed. The truth though is always the result. Over the next couple of days I could still see my gashing lines – skepticism was building but then by day 5, glory, they have all gone and I am completely thrilled with the result as my face looks completely natural and subtle and I can still move my forehead. I can frown with

no lines and my husband has commented that the new cream I am trialing in my own beauty salon must definitively be a wonder cream - it isn’t, as I haven’t actually even taken it out of its box yet! I will be highly recommending Rachael to my own clients for a free consultation. ENHANCE MEDICAL CENTRE Tel: 01242 221999 www.enhancemedical.co.uk The Ionzyme Facial at Escape @ McDiarmid-Hall Clinic – Emma Logan Escape is a boutique spa that uses the world-renowned South African skincare range Environ, designed by cosmetic surgeon Dr Des Fernandes. On arrival, my delightful therapist Jenny showed me around the lavish surroundings at Escape, that include a decadent chill-out drawing room, as the spa is situated in a magnificent former Regency home in Imperial Square, Cheltenham. I was to be treated with The Ultimate Ionzyme Facial, which is without doubt the most wonderful facial I have ever experienced. Jenny explained that this facial is also rather unique in that it works perfectly in tandem if you have had Botox or fillers as it enhances what they do. For the next 1hr 30 minutes my face was treated to an indulgent programme of extensive cleansing using fantastic feeling creams that nourish you. Where the facial really stands out, is the deep pore cleanse that you receive early on. Jenny examines your face for irregularities and you can be assured, she gets everyone of them out. I do wonder why so many beauty salons no longer make facial extractions an essential part of a facial? We all want it and need it! Jenny has an excellent massage technique and this is an essential part of the facial. Once she had applied a thick,

By this stage I was so ‘out of it’ and relaxed I literally couldn’t move my legs and wanted to lie-there forever and an eternity, being pampered to within an inch of my life. Sadly the treatment did have to end and struggling to reawaken I was treated to some hot lemon and ginger tea with fresh fruit to revitalize my body. On looking in the mirror, my face was totally smooth, bags had gone from under my eyes and not a visible pore in sight. Absolutely brilliant! This is a truly heavenly, worthwhile facial and should be an absolute essential treatment in everyone’s little black book. ESCAPE @ MCDIARMID-HALL CLINIC Tel: 01242 571020 www.mhclinic.co.uk

SHELLAC at JOSSPA, The Urban Retreat – Kathy Snowden Chipped finger nails, grubby toenails, the bane of every girls’ life. There are a number of salons that offer Shellac, which the product says provides chipfree, high shine colour for up to 2 weeks. I have been to plenty locally that use the Shellac procedure but rarely do I get beyond a week without the nail colour starting to peel away or in fact the whole lot falling off. With party season underway, it is essential that we are able to plan days of festivities without having to cover breakages with unattractive plasters, as the problem with Shellac is, that you

can’t just use normal nail polish remover to remove the colour, your nails need to be soaked, buffed and polished to prevent any damage. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t have anything on my nails now except Shellac and that is because I have it applied at Josspa. The technicians have been highly trained and due to their experience and diligence I just don’t get those early chips. They also have an additional product they use in the early stages of the application which gives not only added longevity to the colour, it actually protects your nails from any damage. THE SEYCHELLES A journey of archipelagon glory

he Seychelles archipelago is paradise on earth and I will remain forever enthralled by its purifying effect. The Seychelles are a cluster of over one hundred granitic and coral islands lapped by the clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. It is pure heaven on earth. Whilst the inner granitic islands such as Mahe, Praslin, Silhouette and North play host to luxuriant, tropically forested hills dropping down to stunning beaches, the outlying coral islands such as Desroches, Denis, Alphonse and Bird are flatter with groves of palm and casuarina trees. Ringed by powdery white beaches and dazzling coral reefs teeming with marine life, the islands make ideal bases for some world renowned scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. These hideaway retreats weave a magical blend of exquisite isolation and complete tranquillity – perfect when seeking your own secluded corner of paradise. The much awaited time had come when the anticipated moment of arrival and next far-flung adventure was nigh, with the promise of exploring the famous emerald ‘Gardens of Eden’. Excitement mounted as the plane approached Mahe flying above the scores of glistening islands below.

Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt is spellbound by the hypnotically beautiful Seychelles

Island hopping by boat between these heavenly hideaway islands took my breath away, with dramatic granite rocks towering from snowy soft sand bays fringed with swaying palms. In my opinion Praslin’s beaches are the most beautiful in the world showcasing nature at her most luxurious. I spent the day in a dreamy shipwrecked fantasy sprawling on powder soft virgin white sand and the sheer bliss of dipping into the soothing, seductive and warm, gin clear Indian Ocean. The Seychelles are known as ‘The Galapagos of the Indian Ocean’, a conservation hotspot boasting two UNESCO world heritage sites: Vallee de

Mai is home to the endangered Coco de Mer tree only found in the Seychelles and Aldabra Atoll which is home to the world’s largest population of giant tortoises, as they have remained isolated and protected from human influence. Praslin’s Vallee de Mai is an untouched emerald forest entwined with primeval palms and every step was a journey back to prehistoric time. Giant palm umbrellas cast a vast iridescent canopy overhead with towering tree trunks disappearing out of view, creating distorted beams and shards of sunlight to bounce to the forest floor. The path undulated past tumbling waterfalls over boulders of moss with serpentine vines,

tangling and exotic birds, (including the endemic black parrot), geckos, skink, several chameleons and insects flittering through the canopy. The Coco de Mer palm nut is a mysterious shiny, black seed resembling a huge gorilla’s bottom. It is actually the largest seed in the plant kingdom. There are spas with tailor-made treatments, adventures galore and plenty to explore whether that be an aerial island hopping experience by helicopter or a journey to Aride Island - home to

one of the most important seabird populations in the Indian Ocean. You can hike to find the hawksbill turtles of Silhouette Island who inhabit a remote secluded cove. Alternatively you can follow the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall’s lead and head for pure island bliss on North Island, arguably the most stylish beach resort in the whole of the Indian Ocean and only accessible by helicopter. The Seychelles is perfect for those searching the ultimate idyllic hideaway.

ASTAWAY The Sunday Times Style Editor, Tiffanie Darke headlined at last month’s Cheltenham Literature Festival. Here our columnist, Ellie Mainwaring uncovers Tiffanie’s Castaway Collection following her Literature Festival debut Where in the world will you choose to be a castaway and why?

Name one Wild Card possession you would take.

I would choose a Scottish Bothy on an island in Orkney so I could watch seals and sunsets, and be close to the pole and the Northern Lights. I think that would make me feel very cosmic and essential - pretty crucial as I’m not going to have anyone else to talk to apart from gulls. I would take the full collection from Atelier Cologne, which is quite simply the best fragrance collection ever. Mistral Patchouli for day, Ambre Nue for night when I shall be communing sexily with the stars.

I would take my Missoni floor length evening gown – singularly the most decadent, beautiful and exquisite thing I own. I want to be buried in it, so I would have to make sure I was wearing it on the island when I met my end. I can also imagine myself drifting about on the sands in chiffon and sequins. You can’t wear sheepskin all the time, after all!

What fragrance would you take?

Missoni dress

What item of jewellery or accessory would you take?

I would take my Solange AzaguryPartridge engagement ring, which made me realise that the man who had just proposed to me was very rock ‘n’ roll indeed. It’s got a ruby, his Great Grandmother’s diamond and is designed a little bit like a Pope’s ring. It’s the most amazing piece of jewellery ever made.

What would be your last supper before departing for your desert island?

You can take the entire works of one musician to your desert island, who will it be?

Nick Drake. I never get bored listening to Nick Drake. Also the lyrics are nothing short of ‘poetry proper’. I would not take my cat Norfolk because he is very unfriendly and would completely ignore me. He What animal or pet would you take?

A Ralph Lauren double cashmere blanket. My Style Team gave me one when I went off to have my first baby, and we (the baby and I) spent months together swaddled on the sofa in it. As that baby grew up he became very attached to the blanket. It is his and my security blanket. Quite literally – when Doctor Who is on we can’t watch without it. What would be your luxury item?

would also not be very useful. Perhaps something more practical like a goat, because then I could have milk and cheese.

Avocado on spelt toast with lemon juice, sea salt and pepper and butter on the toast – I know you are not meant to but I can’t help it. I love dairy! In fact I would have to plant an avocado tree on the island as I think I could live on them for the rest of my life. I did once live on them as a student travelling in Central America with very little money. There were avocado trees everywhere and the ground was littered with the fruit. No need to buy food when you can forage that kind of treasure.

Interview

Music in Remembrance Emma Logan meets Nicholas McCarthy, award winning one-handed pianist who is performing on Armistice Day at the Pittville Pump Rooms Being a concert pianist may not be the most obvious career choice for a onehanded person but it was Nicholas McCarthy’s dream. Nicholas was born without his right hand and came to the piano at the late age of 14. He then went on to gain a place at the globally acclaimed Royal College of Music where his historic graduation made world press in 2012, closely followed by a performance at the 2012 Paralympic Closing Ceremony televised around the world. Nicholas specialises in left hand alone repertoire, which began in the 19th Century and was developed as a result of the First World War, largely due to injuries sustained by pianists in battle. The award winning, one-handed concert pianist is delighted to be bringing to Cheltenham, an intimate concert of “Music in Remembrance” marking the 1914 centenary on Armistice Day, Tuesday November 11th at the beautiful Pittville Pump Rooms following a performance at The Royal Albert Hall. This concert is a poignant culmination of Nicholas’s dedication to one-handed piano music in this First World War Centenary year. The concert features great works that Nicholas has performed across the BBC, ITV and the Cheltenham Music Festival including music from Scriabin, Bridge, Liszt, Ivor Novello and a rare arrangement of ‘Ave Maria’ by a soldier who lost his right hand in WW1. Nicholas will also perform his own left hand alone transcriptions of ‘Roses of Picardy’, ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ and Elgar’s ‘Nimrod’. Nicholas will introduce each piece giving the interesting, humorous and poignant stories behind the music. Nicholas will

“THE CONCERT FEATURES GREAT WORKS THAT NICHOLAS HAS PERFORMED ACROSS THE BBC, ITV AND THE CHELTENHAM MUSIC FESTIVAL INCLUDING MUSIC FROM SCRIABIN, BRIDGE, LISZT AND IVOR NOVELLO...” dedicate Ivor Novello’s Second World War hit, “We’ll Gather Lilacs” to those that served in that conflict. The concert is in tribute to all of those that have suffered through war, whether at home or overseas and is dedicated to the memory of those that made the ultimate sacrifice during two world wars and in conflicts since 1945. Nicholas has strong connections to Gloucestershire being a patron of Carers Gloucestershire and his involvement through the Cheltenham Music Festival and Cheltenham Festivals Education programme. Tickets are available from: The Cheltenham Town Hall Box Office: 0844 576 2210 www.cheltenhamtownhall.org.uk

WIN... To win a pair of tickets to the Music In Remembrance concert on 11th November, please answer the following question:

Where did Nicholas McCarthy study? The first correct answer emailed through to Simon Robinson at info@inspire-management.com by 10th November 2014 will win. Please include your contact details along with your answer. Good luck!

Hair

Keep Your Hair On! Laura Leigh delves into the important issue of hair thinning and loss… Stress, flu, fever, fluctuating hormones, antibiotics, skipped meals, fast foods, sleepless nights - you name it, if it disrupts your body it’s very likely to affect your hair! Hair is an incredibly sensitive barometer to internal imbalances and for two simple reasons; it is both a non-essential tissue AND the second fastest tissue your body produces. Your hair will not prioritise its needs. Thinning hair in women occurs much more frequently than you might think and can affect anyone from puberty upwards. On the plus side, combating women’s hair loss is much easier than tackling it in men. The best approach really depends on the underlying cause and whether it is a case of excessive daily shedding, gradual reduction in hair diameter, breakage or all of the above. However, there are a few things that you can always do to strengthen your hair and get your growth cycle back on track.

SCALP MATTERS

CONDITION COUNTS If you keep your hair in good condition, its overall density will immediately appear greater and over time will actually improve. This is simply because there will be less breakage and damage to the hair cuticle. Our recommendation is to use a product that nourishes the hair whilst protecting it against heat styling and the daily elements with our favourite being Keraste Ciment Thermique. This is a resurfacing, reinforcing, blow-dry milk, for weakened damaged hair (www.kerastase.co.uk). On the days that you don’t have to style your hair, give it a break a break and leave it to dry naturally. Also try to limit heat styling to once a week if you want to improve the condition and use a brush with round tipped prongs, not hard bristles.

Regardless of the trigger of hair loss, supporting hair growth via a healthy scalp is key. Shampoo your hair as often as you can and if you have a tendency towards itching and flaking, use products to clear it. You may also want to reduce full-fat dairy and alcohol intake. A flaky scalp is known to exacerbate hair loss. L’Oreal has recently launched an anti-thinning programme called Serioxyl (www.loreal professionnel.com), which has both antimicrobial and stimulating agents. It gives immediate volume and texture whilst helping to minimise excessive hair shedding within 6 to 12 weeks.

INTERNAL SUPPORT Your hair is provided with the nutrients it needs to grow via tiny blood capillaries attached to each follicle. Perhaps the most important aspect of improving and maintaining hair density in the long run is your diet. As said before, hair is a non-essential tissue and so your body will never give it a priority at meal times no matter how depleted it is. You can get various blood tests done to check your vitamin and mineral levels but unfortunately these don’t always take into account levels needed for hair growth. Furthermore external factors such as stress and illness can also affect how your body absorbs and uses the foods you eat. It’s a good idea to supplement your diet with a multi vitamin that is easily utilised by your body.

WINTER WARMERS When the weather gets colder, what’s the one thing we can't complain about? You know what it is, surely? That’s right it will always be the winter warmers Hobbs have even somehow managed to transform a classic coat into something chic and edgy, just by adding a killer fold and creating the entire look in a sort of shade of moss – a little something to watch for this season. Hobbs I definitely couldn’t cover the ultimate winter warmers without first talking about a faux fur and secondly, Whistles. Whistles have given us a simple faux fur in the most complex and covetable form; the sheepskin biker. Can’t you just see it being worn with everything from denims to satin for Whistles this season? For a staple wool notquite-blouse, yet not-quite-jumper top, Mango has us covered. These beauties are popping up everywhere and seem to be an upper body hybrid; nobody really knows what article of clothing they are, all we do know is that we want at least one – perhaps even one in every colour. There’s

t this time of year, there isn’t all that much to look forwards to. Yes Christmas is around the corner but we’ve still got a long old wait and there’s nothing like good old British weather to leave you feeling down in the dumps. But does it really have to? Isn’t there a little something we can all look forward over the next few months to make the colder seasons seem much more exciting? Of course there is and thankfully it involves a lot of warmth – and a lot of wonderful warmth at that. Winter fashion has long had the frumpy stigma, with layers being unattractive and winter coats being a lot worse but that’s a thing of the past and wrapping up to keep out the cold has become almost cool, pardon the pun, and definitely on trend. Take this striped Reiss number. Seasons before, a knitted pullover wouldn’t have been the most fetching, yet the stylish stripes and almost geometric air is so fashion forward you almost forget it has a practical purpose first and foremost.

A

Reiss

Warehouse

nothing better for a dress-down day or to dress a little something up – it’s a simple all rounder. And for the bottom half, because there’s always got to be a bottom half option on offer, there’s just too much to choose from this year. From knitted skirts to wool blend trousers and woven shorts and texture, texture, texture, the edit was tough – but this Warehouse wonder won. Being tweed, how could it not? Style it up with sequins and studs, or play it cool with collars and cuffs; but whichever you choose to wear any of these with, you know you’ll be warm this winter.

y inspiration for this month’s shoot came from the iconic Audrey Hepburn, walking in Central Park. I wanted to recreate autumn leaves, lakes and glamour so Pittville Park, the Boathouse at the park and the Pittville Pump Room fitted the bill to produce a like for like fashion piece. Trending this autumn/winter is a take on the 40s and 50s glamour and style. who are based in Stow-on-the-Wold and Cheltenham. On my travels through France and stopping off in Lyon my favourite shopping destination, I found some wonderful pieces by Maje, a well priced French range. The designs by Libelula, Katrina Wildman and Marilyn Moore are all stocked at Foundation. They were pieced together with items from new, vintage boutique in Montpellier in Cheltenham, Chapters. A young local dress designer called Sophie Belinda designed the Audrey dress, while the very talented Fern

Berreen, a local milliner, supplied some of the hats. Talented photographer Stefanie captured the whole look perfectly with my stunning models Lucy Thayers, Daisy Ganderton and Lauren Exell who worked tirelessly on a wet and windy autumnal day. Amy Hickey a superb makeup artist and Nicci Pestridge with the team at Vallenders Hair Salon created the movie star glamour of the era to perfection. Granddaughter doggie Miss Nibbles behaved impeccably as did our lovely horse kindly provided by Will Hunt from Breaking & Training.

Pets

KEEPING YOUR PETS WARM IN THE WINTER MONTHS Animal advice from our friends at Vets on the Park Its that time of year again, the nights are drawing in, the clocks have gone back, the heating is on and there is nothing nicer than curling up on the sofa in your jammies with a mug of hot chocolate. But during the winter months we must also consider keeping our pets cosy too, this is especially important for smaller furries that may be living outside. Keep your small furries, such as rabbits in pairs, they are social animals and they will keep each other warm! However make sure they are neutered if you are mixing sexes! Also keep in mind that mixing rabbits and guinea pigs together is not a good idea- rabbits have been known to bully guinea pigs. Make sure you provide plenty of good quality hay and extra food, they will use up extra calories keeping warm Check the hutch, make sure it is water tight and there are no draughts. If you notice patches of damp, then the roof may need replacing. Insulate the hutch using old blankets or carpet, it is possible to purchase specially designed hutch covers and clean out the hutch daily, since wet

bedding will become cold Microwavable heat-pads can be used over night, they will give up to 10 hours of heat but do not be tempted to use hot water bottles- they could easily be chewed. Check water bottles regularly, the nozzles can become frozen cutting off the water supply to our pet. Wine bottle insulators can be wrapped around water bottles so help stop them freezing. Guinea pigs will require extra vitamin c during the winter months as they cannot synthesize their own so make sure the food you select has plenty. Cats and dogs should never be left outside or in cars, unheated conservatories or caravans. Do not let your pets lie on frozen ground for long periods of time If you have a dog breed with a fine coat invest in a warm coat for them – these days you can get a large selection of lovely coats for your dogs to keep them warm and cosy this winter Consider keeping cats indoors during winter nights as we find many cats go missing at this time of year. If your dog gets wet during a walk

make sure you dry them off as soon as possible Salt used for de-icing pavements can cause irritation to the delicate pads of dogs feet so always dry them off after a walk. Ensure that your pets are microchipped and are wearing tags in case you lose them in the dark and remember to invest in some high visibility clothes to keep you safe when out walking in the dark. Why not invest in a light up collar or tag for you dogs collar so you can see them when out on walks in the dark evenings? We have ordered in a range of fantastic new light up collars called Lumitubes. Available now at the surgery. A New Noise in PR Emma Logan meets Laura-Jayne Roberts, an experienced PR girl about town IGGLING over a glass of fizz, it is hard to believe this young girl is launching her own business but look a little closer and the excited twinkle in her eye, the hunger in her voice and the enthusiasm of her beaming smile, reveals a true dedicated passion for her new venture. Readers meet Laura-Jayne Roberts and Ivy PR; her boutique PR and marketing company, specialising in the luxury lifestyle industries, has arrived in the Cotswolds. Founded and run solely by LauraJayne, Ivy PR offers clients years of media and public relations experience, hundreds of local and national media contacts – from working as a journalist on a daily national, the Racing Post in London, accompanied with an appetite for creative marketing delivering the perfect PR solution to suit a company’s goals and budget. Laura-Jayne said: “I am really excited to set up Ivy PR, named after my late grandmother, who always said I would run my own business one day. It is something I have always dreamed of doing. I feel the time is right to attempt to fulfil those dreams and to me, the Cotswolds is the perfect place!” After moving back from the ‘big smoke’, Laura-Jayne began working as a freelance writer for a luxury PR company. She said: “I quickly learnt that I could use all of my skills from working as a journalist and more. I fell in love with another career all over again.”

“I QUICKLY LEARNT THAT I COULD USE ALL OF MY SKILLS FROM WORKING AS A JOURNALIST AND MORE, I FELL IN LOVE WITH ANOTHER CAREER ALL OVER AGAIN.” Subsequently for the past two and a half years Laura-Jayne has worked at The King’s School Gloucester, handling all aspects of their marketing and PR – a rewarding and varied role which has enabled her to further enhance her skill repertoire in areas such as event management and creative design. Ivy PR specialises

in fashion, beauty, home, travel, food, and the health and wellbeing industries – the sectors which Laura-Jayne has significant experience in and is particularly passionate about, a passion which breeds her creativity. Using the media as a powerful channel to reach target markets, Laura-Jayne uses her creativity, connections and expertise to capture the attention of journalists, who will create the ‘noise’ she knows businesses deserve. “I can offer affordable, bespoke PR packages and services, tailored to suit a client’s exact needs, in order to help their business achieve the recognition it deserves to grow in style and be successful in today’s competitive climate. I will personally manage each client relationship, taking the time to really get to know a business and its objectives, in order to achieve its goals. “From local and national PR campaigns to copywriting, social media management, event management, strategy planning and videography, I am somewhat of a one woman band! This does aid affordability for clients, as I don’t need to outsource work.” Situated in the Eagle Tower in Cheltenham, but hoping to attract clients from all over the county, Laura-Jayne is very ambitious about her projects going forward and although starting up a business on your own can be a nerve wracking time, with clients already signing up to her services, the future for Ivy PR looks bright. C2S BUSINESS UPDATE High energy generated at EDF by counties leading businesses Words by Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Director of Circle2Success A FULL house of over 50 people attended a meeting at EDF Energy Generation Business HQ at Barnwood. A combined meeting of members of the C2S Leaders and Executive Forum came together to listen to Bob Fenton, Head of Communications at EDF Energy Generation as he told members about EDF’s approach to Employee Engagement and answered a variety of questions. EDF Energy is the UK’s largest electricity generator, generating 1/5th of UK electricity and operates 8 of the UK’s 9 nuclear power stations and plans to build up to 4 new nuclear reactors. It employs over 15000 people with 6000 of those being involved in the generation business making it a huge task to successfully engage with its staff across the UK. Forum members also discussed their own approaches to employee engagement, sharing best practice and new ideas. Companies attended the workshop included ILEC IMEC; Renishaw; Creed; Harrison Clark Rickerbys; PwC; Britannia; Tayabali Tomlin; Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust; GillFoxJames; Markey Group; Eurolink and HR Champions. Chris Haslam, Robert Hitchins said that ‘the joint leaders and exec meeting on Tuesday worked extremely well and C2S events have become a “must go” in busy diaries”. The next Forums in November will be hosted by members Robert Hitchins for the Leaders Forums and Manor by the Lake for the Executive Forum.

C2S members Omega Resource Group; Renishaw and BPE are involved in supporting this year’s Festomane, a week-long series of events taking place 24th - 29th Nov in celebration of the world-leading manufacturing and engineering sector that makes up such an important part of Stroud

and Gloucestershire’s economy. Alan Beresford from Omega Resource said ‘we are delighted to be supporting the event for the 3rd year running as it is a great opportunity for companies involved in manufacturing & engineering to showcase their businesses and engage with young people’. Neil Carmichael, the Stroud MP who’s brainchild Festomane is and who has been driving its expansion told us “As manufacturing and engineering output continues to grow in the county, I am delighted the third Festomane is being supported by so many innovative firms keen to recruit skilled young people”. Expectations! TEMPORARY MEASURES Temporary staff are usually accounted for as a ‘cost’ to the business, yet their value is underestimated. One of the statements we hear most often about temps is that they’re a cost and actually, ‘we’ll just get by’; but with approximately 15.2 million working days lost to businesses due to stress related illnesses each year and the advent of a major UK skills shortage, can you really afford to see temps as just a ‘cost’? Speaking of temporary workers, Abi Howell, Director and Manager of the Cheltenham branch says “Larger businesses and corporates both locally and nationally have embraced the use of temporary workers for many years but SMEs are slow on the uptake and spend a lot of time focussing solely on the costs. Whilst there are immediate fees and wages payable, very few businesses actually identify the costs of not using temporary workers; a mistake, particularly in the current market.” She continues “Temporary workers are flexible, skilled and affordable, delivering not only their appointed role but also supporting existing staff, reducing pressure and stress and increasing overall productivity. Opting just to ‘get by’ can result not only in lost productivity from the vacant role but also lost productivity from other staff, potentially increased sickness days as a result of stress and even missed deadlines or orders. Whilst many hope this will not be the case and opt not to employ temporary workers, it is worth considering the pros and cons very carefully.”

So what are the benefits of temporary workers? • Cost benefits; temps have to be paid and there are agency charges, but for ad hoc needs like holiday cover or support on large projects, temps are a great option without increasing payroll costs; they also save on overtime payments for permanent employees too. • Flexibility; temporary workers can be added or removed as required, giving the business far more flexibility when it comes to filling gaps. They can also be made permanent in the long-term if demand remains high and there are business benefits; they will already understand the processes and business culture – an added bonus! • Drive & productivity; many businesses report that despite having incentives in place for permanent staff, temporary workers’ output can be more in the same timeframe. This is most likely because temps are on short-term contracts so are really motivated to fulfil the role, and are also determined to prove themselves in the hope of future work. What’s more, team productivity often goes up along with the temps as they provide an injection of new ideas and can help motivate existing staff too.

• Low-risk; if having a temp isn’t working out, you don’t have to keep them! Unlike permanent staff, there are no costs involved in finding and appointing a temporary member of staff and if they are surplus to requirements, you just finish them – no strings attached. It’s difficult to estimate the true value of employing temporary workers as it will be affected by how long they are employed, in what capacity, the size of the business and many other factors; that said, the majority of businesses that use temporary workers report a range of unexpected benefits. Given the current skills shortage, temp staff can be great to support a restructuring or to plug specific gaps, freeing skilled workers to deliver additional output and much more. If you want to find out if temporary staff are right for you, call your local Expectations! branch and we’ll be happy to help!

Business

Is your Life Assurance Relevant? Do you have a successful business that gives you and your family a rewarding lifestyle that you have worked hard to achieve? Did you know that as a director of your own company, your life cover could provide tax benefits whilst giving you the peace of mind that your family would be provided for should the worst happen? Charlotte Tupper from Montpellier Asset Management explains more... I have been talking about Relevant Life policies since they were introduced a few years ago when I was Business Development Manager at a large life assurance company. We were at the forefront of this new innovative product and had one of the first ‘off the shelf ’ trust deeds available for financial advisers. It was exciting back then (as exciting as life assurance gets!) as it was new and we were some of the first people offering training sessions and discussing its potential.

So what is Relevant Life? A relevant life policy is an alternative way for an employer to set up life cover for an employee in a tax efficient manner, without using a registered death in a service group life scheme to benefit the employee’s dependents. It is set up on a single life basis and is suitable for small businesses that might not normally be able to access this type of death in service cover. A relevant life policy is suitable in many situations, not just for SMEs looking for life assurance or an employee benefits package. Company directors of limited companies can enjoy these valuable tax benefits as well, if the premiums for life insurance are paid by their company instead of from personal income after tax. Although the company pays the premiums, they are not normally

Cost to Mrs A and LBD Ltd company paying personally = £313.93 • Paid from Pre Tax Income • Add on Employee's and Employer's National Insurance • Less the amount of gross salary and NI allowable deductions against Corporation Tax at 20%* Cost to LBD Ltd paying through RLPT = £160.00 • No employee Income Tax or NI • No employer NI • Relevant life policy is an allowable deduction against corporation tax at 20% Saving

= £153.93

Or 49% assessable to income tax on the employee as a benefit in kind. This can be a significant saving, particularly for a higher or additional rate taxpayer. It continues to be something that people don’t talk about much even though it’s been available for a few years now. Detailed below is a working scenario so you can have a look to see if you or your employees could benefit. Compare the cost of Mrs A arranging her own life assurance against the same cover arranged and paid for through her employer’s scheme using a Relevant Life Policy.

Mrs A is a shareholding director of LBD Ltd. She currently pays for her life assurance personally at a cost of £200 per month out of her post tax salary. Mrs A is a higher rate taxpayer. She also pays the additional 2% rate above the upper earnings limit for National Insurance. I have assumed the policy premiums for her plan are taken from her higher marginal rate of tax. LBD Ltd pay employer’s National Insurance contributions at the ‘contracted in’ rate of 13.8%. In this example salary, National Insurance contributions and Relevant Life Policy premiums are all treated as allowable deductions for the purposes of Corporation Tax. *Figures based on HMRC Tax and NI rates applicable as at 06.04.2011 *Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and may change in the future

If you would like to discuss this or many more tax efficient options, please come and talk to me at Montpellier Asset Management, 7 Imperial Square, opposite the town hall. E: charlotte@montpellierasset.com T: 01242 530999 W: www.montpellierasset.com

Servicing the Cotswolds on the M5 Emma Logan met the team behind Gloucester Services Farmshop and Kitchen, a truly unique service station

“I

f it feels different here, it’s because we are.” Gloucester Services, a rare breed of motorway services is certainly out of the ordinary. Opened in May this year on the northbound carriageway of the M5, Gloucester Services is dedicated to local food, farming and the surrounding community. Created in partnership with the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, a social regeneration charity, the services aim to redistribute an estimated £10 million over 20 years back into local charity projects and also provides employment opportunities for the surrounding Gloucester estates. The story of the service station has its roots 200 miles north of the Cotswolds in Cumbria. The Dunning family opened the acclaimed Tebay Services back in 1972 when the M6 was built through their hill farm. Tebay service station started as a 30seat café serving good quality, homemade food that was sourced from the best local producers and suppliers. These values remain at the heart of the business today at the newly opened site in Gloucester. Refreshingly different, there are no chains, no franchises and no fast food on the premises. Instead there is a farmshop stocked with locally produced food, a butchery offering Gloucestershire meat and a café serving homemade dishes created from locally sourced food every day. Gloucester Services work with 130 suppliers within 30 miles and a further 70 from the South West, providing a huge opportunity for local producers to reach a new and ever-changing customer base, thanks to the busy M5. All this results in a significant boost for local business. Research by Oxfam shows that every pound spent on locally grown food, gives back at least £3 into the local economy. Local sourcing on such a large scale will have genuine and measurable results for Gloucestershire’s rural economy. The services have revived the format of an old fashioned butcher, such as hanging meat on the bone and offering traditional cuts of meat alongside seasonal specialities like sweetbreads and seasonal game. The deli offers a huge range of local specialities including Double Gloucester and the rare

Single Gloucester. The farmshop has been described as a ‘who’s who’ of Gloucestershire’s best food producers. The Gloucester site recently hosted a lunch with Sarah Dunning, the CEO of the Westmorland group, on behalf of Jennifer Bryant Pearson of JBP. Jennifer’s esteemed guests including Neil Carmichael, MP for Stroud and Laurence Robertson, MP for Tewkesbury gathered at Gloucester Services to hear Sarah Dunning’s inspirational story including the history and values behind the business and what the future holds. Gloucester Services southbound site is due to open in the summer of 2015, creating a further 150 local jobs. At the lunch, guests enjoyed exquisite canapés using the finest local ingredients including Jess’ Ladies Organic Cream, whose herd of ‘ladies’ graze on organic pastures just a stone’s throw from the service station, alongside Simon Weaver’s Cotswold blue veined brie and Severn and Wye smoked salmon. The guests were highly impressed by the quality of the produce, which was all made on site by Gloucester Services talented chefs. You can visit Gloucester Services Farmshop and Kitchen on the M5 northbound between junctions 12 and 11a. The main services are open 24 hours a day. The Kitchen Café is open between 6am- 9pm and the Farmshop is open from 6am- 10pm.

Which team do you Choose? Shane Duff analyses parents’ thought process

SOCCER

SCHOOL

www.shaneduffsoccer.co.uk Twitter: @shaneduffsoccer Facebook.com/shaneduffsoccer

Being a sports coach, I often wonder what perception other coaches have of me and how parents decide where they take their son or daughter to play local sport. My sport is football and the amount of football teams in and around Cheltenham is phenomenal. Hundreds of parents give up their time during the week to train the children and then more hours at the weekend to take them to a competitive match. This is a big commitment and a real credit to all involved. But where does this all start? How do you decide which club to take your child to? Is it the reputation of the club or is it one particular coach of a specific age group? Or is it just simply the closest club to you where all your neighbours go too? Let’s be honest this decision could impact heavily on enjoyment level, development and longevity in the game. I have been doing some research on coach feedback to players and amazingly, international managers cannot accurately recall 58% of the games event, so I do wonder what the statistic would be for a grass roots level parent who doesn’t have as much expertise. I hear horror stories of managers getting angry with youngsters matches, but how much of their feedback

is accurate? Does this feedback impact on the weekend of a whole family? Will your child be grumpy for the weekend if they get criticised by the coach? A father I know says his whole weekend is dictated by the result of his son’s game on a Saturday morning. I often wonder if talented players in this country are just the lucky ones who signed up for the right team, at the right time, with the right mother or father as the coach. Is it luck or should parents be picky in their approach. I am interested to hear how much thought goes into it. Sport is full of opinions and that is part of the reason we are all addicted to it and enjoy a good old-fashioned debate about who should play where and for the national team among other things. But some opinions should be filtered before being delivered, but there seems to be no way of this being implemented. Twitter: @duffo16

Fitness

Keep your training consistent Fitness Expert Luciano Kydd explains the importance of being consistent with a training programme if you desire results ONE of the most important reasons individuals don’t achieve their goals or get the desired effect when trying to change or improve their physiques, is mainly due to a lack of consistency in a sound training and nutritional plan. This can be down to a few

things such as lack of experience in the gym arena or just not knowing where to begin. Finding a good Personal Trainer or coach is the best way for individuals to reach their goals such as Fatloss or building lean muscle mass. The training programme

needs to reflect the objective in mind, so let’s take a closer look at the following tables below to emphasis my point. For example, an individual looking to lose fat whilst building lean muscle mass ie. Toning up.

You can see right away the difference in training design and variables from the two plans. In Plan A, I as a trainer can guarantee the client a greater chance of results due to a structured plan, knowing exactly what the client is doing on any given day even though I might not be present, whilst expecting an outcome week by week. This also gives me a system to work from every 3-4 weeks when I need to change or adapt the training programme/protocol with regards to things such as sets, reps, rest period, changing of individual exercises and tempo if incorporated. Some days I might include outdoor events the individuals like, to boost adherence to the plan and give the client the illusion that they are in control of the overall programme. Whilst on the Plan B programme, there never seems to be any consistency with the individual in terms of the outcome they are trying to achieve. There are a lot of changes in

different energy systems used; along with energy expenditure, some days are a miss match of low-level intensity, high intensity exercises, lots of cardio, whilst others are based around free weights and then rest days when there might not be a need. This leaves the individual with the belief that because they are doing different exercises and sweating, they are closer to their goal but the true specific outcome might not be guaranteed by this plan. Point to note: All exercise is a positive and many exercise classes are successful in making physical training fun and engaging and provide general fitness for most individuals who wouldn’t otherwise bother. However, if you have a specific body goal, then a specific, wellplanned and CONSISTENT training plan is needed! Truth be told, getting results while building a lasting and great body takes time, a lot of hard work and more so, consistency with

the plan. The people who are successful are the ones who show up day after day, work the system and get the results, others just complain. When it comes to guaranteeing a client results whether that is Fatloss or muscle building, not only is having a great training programme a must but a good nutritional plan is crucial. More about that subject matter in my next article, stay tuned. Luciano Kydd is a personal trainer based in Cheltenham. Email: kyddfitness@hotmail.co.uk – (for 1-2-1 personal training). Claire in the County Claire Thayers reveals there is a life of laughter as well as great food at the Bourton Market

umptuous dining room, delicacies galore, Champagne flowing, top totty opposite, the perfect romantic meal, just about to pick up the silver to tuck in… BEEP BEEP BEEP… Damn it – woken up before I could even sample one tasty morsel, or sample anything else for that matter! Then through the fog, I remembered that it was time to get up – 5.30am on a Sunday morning, time to help my dearest friends with their stall at Bourton market. Good job I love them I thought, as I prized myself out from under the warm duvet, into the dark, preparing for the autumn chill. There’s nothing like a shower to get you going but no time for breakfast. Jo and Myles arrived and off we trundled, non stop chatter all the way and by the time we got to the market, tummy rumbling there was still no time for that much needed bacon sarnie. I had far too much to do such as the tent to put up and the trestle tables to fight with (why don’t they make ones that just bloody well pop-up?) and boxes to unpack. The tables were groaning under the biggest cheese selection ever, delicious

pies and honey roast ham carved off the bone, all so tempting to scoff there and then and next to us the famous bread stall that usually sells out in no time. There were delicious fruit juices opposite and local to me, Winchcombe pottery for sale. Finally the lull before the storm and perfect time for that much needed breakfast and prepare for the onslaught…pinny on! I just loved it. The people that you meet come in all shapes and sizes, from all sorts of walks of life and in Bourton, you would not believe the number of different nationalities. The clothes they wear; the odd Gloucester rugby shirt, straining at the seams (biggest mistake made by sports clubs, lycra looks great on a fit, hunk of a Billy Twelvetrees but on a 50 something, 50 stone supporter… really?) There was the occasional twin set, the odd leather jacket and Oxford brogues to crumbling trainers. Dogs were trying to snuffle some pork scratchings off the front of the stand, kids were peering over the top of the table desperate to snatch some goodies, motor scooters stopped by laden with bags of lovely local stuff…their drivers

desperate to chat and ‘chew the cud’ and that’s what its all about! So many come to the market because Myles and Jo cheer their day – they have the time to gossip and they love to show off their exciting new cheese and share all the stories. They delight their customers with a bit of money knocked off, or a bit ‘thrown in for good measure’. You don’t get that at the supermarket, so why don’t we support our farmers markets more? Time – I really think that’s the only reason, as the quality is far superior, the service out of this world, the basics are all there from bacon, to bread, to locally grown vegetables and home produced meat, so why wouldn’t you shop there? Maybe it’s just hectic lives – we are too busy and we only want to do one shop and buy everything in the one place so perhaps Bourton should encourage a stall that sells washing up liquid and polish! So the morale of this story is do support your local farmers market. The selection and quality is second to none and what a lovely way to spend a morning – tons of laughter, lots of banter and by shopping there you are supporting our local producers, which benefits our local economy – what’s not to like? So now back home remembering the day, sitting down at my scrub topped kitchen table, no flutes of fabulous fizz unfortunately, just a chipped mug of good old ‘builders’, tucking into a pickle topped pork pie for supper and resting my aching, old legs. I had the best day, with ribs still aching from the laughter and a fridge bursting at the seams with delights for the week…. Just a shame I was missing the top totty to warm my bed but hey ho, can’t have it all – let’s hope I can pick up where I left off on that dream again! Heartfelt thanks to Myles Salmon and Jo Ward, Cotswold Pudding and Pie Company for being brave enough to invite me to help. Betting Banter at The Open Betlive Radio’s Expert racing pundit Nigel Aplin, tips us all the way for The Open meet this November hen the first sharp scent of cooler air titillates the nose and autumn leaves brighten the eye, the good racing folk of winter months know the ‘new year’ has come; time for tweed, trilbies and tipples. For those fresh faced youths up from Chelsea, shireside farmers rosy red and cider soaked, binocular strapped aficionados with pink and yellow badges and those that just love to see horse pitted against birch, the Cheltenham Open Meeting is upon us. Three days of the very best of National Hunt racing and the chance to see horses setting out their stalls for the season to come and hoping to be back in March for Festival glory. Friday 14th November is Countryside Day, steeped in the days when Dowager Countesses preceded online dating and there was still honey left for tea. An early opportunity for Christmas shopping in the tented village, the perennial Injured

Jockeys Christmas cards and that stalwart of a wall calendar. As ‘le terroir’ is to the French, so is the food tent to Countryside connoisseurs, fur and fin, artisan pies, succulent sausages and jolly good snifters to keep seasonal sniffles at bay. I don’t mind if I do, Colonel. Talking of which, one of the feature races of day one is the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase; that hurly burly of a whip round the hedges and traps of the racecourse’s inner. For those sharpening your pencils, look out for the pale green and yellow stripes of J.P McManus, anything with Nina Carberry on board

and a horse who has shown a liking for this course and race before. Saturday stages autumn’s biggest race of the season, the Paddy Power Gold Cup. Bluebottle, racing expert for betliveradio.com, tells me to look for a progressive, young chaser with winning Cheltenham form. The market has also been a tremendous guide. Of the last 42 winners, just eight did not start in the first four in the betting. Last year’s winner had previously impressed when winning at the October Meeting, meaning that he became the eighteenth winner in the last 22 years to have already tasted success over the course beforehand. At the time of writing there are some serious quality horses at the head of the market; Oscar Whiskey from the Nicky Henderson yard and Taquin Du Seuil, who was something of a standing dish at Cheltenham last season for Jackdaw’s Castle, Jonjo 0’Neill. At a bigger price Present View is of interest, having won the same novice handicap at the Cheltenham Festival that L’Antartique won and then added the Paddy Power Gold Cup eight months later. It is also interesting to note that this handicap was the key race last year as the Paddy Power winner, second and fifth all contested that prize the previous March. Sunday’s big race is the Greatwood Hurdle which invariably throws up a horse that can be followed with profit for the rest of the season and often goes on to win a Festival race. All in all a cornucopia of the finest that only Cheltenham in November can offer. Pass me the old flask, Carson. The Open takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse on 14th, 15th and 16th November. AUTOVILLAGE 10 successful years in business One of Cheltenham’s largest independent car retailers is now approaching 10 years in business. Autovillage has been trading very successfully for the past decade and is now about to reach this important milestone in the company’s history Autovillage has grown enormously since its creation as a quality used car dealership by Paul Boyce in 2005. During that first year more than 400 used cars were sold. Today, there are two sites, Autovillage’s SsangYong, Great Wall & 4x4 Centre which also encompasses a thriving servicing and repair workshop operation on Tewkesbury Road, Swindon Village in Cheltenham, and Autovillage’s used car centre on Gotherington Cross, Evesham Road, Cheltenham, where a wide variety of superbly prepared used cars from every area of the market are offered. The Great Wall franchise at the Swindon Village site arrived in 2011 while the SsangYong franchise started operations two years ago. Autovillage has enjoyed considerable success with both brands while used car sales also continue to power ahead of expectations.

SSANGYONG Sales of new and Approved Used SsangYong models have remained so strong that Autovillage is now acknowledged as the England’s number one SsangYong’s main dealer. Every model is new and stylish, and in addition to the 4x4 and Pick-Up product line-up for which SsangYong is particularly well known, its range now encompasses the all-new Turismo MPV, one of the roomiest people carriers on the market offering not just seven seats, but a massive boot with enough capacity to swallow several large suitcases even with everyone on board. Sales Manager, Philip Lean comments: “With prices starting at just £17,995 there’s really nothing to touch it. Several manufacturers have left the ‘people carrier’ market and so the Turismo is proving very popular, and we’re still selling its predecessor, the Rodius, in used form. Both are in great demand as is the New Korando pick-up range priced from just £14,995 plus VAT, with its massive 3-tonne towing capacity. The Rexton range is selling well

too, including the CSX commercial version.” SsangYong offers customers real value, and every model is reliable and mechanically. What’s more, all SsangYongs cars sold in the UK come with a marketleading five-year limitless-mileage warranty.

GREAT WALL Demand for the rugged Great Wall Steed pick-up has never been stronger. With additional equipment, more refinement, new Euro 5 diesel engines and disc brakes all round, the latest 2015 Model Year version is better than ever. Philip says: “We receive around 10 calls a month for the Steed. At a time when so many pick-up manufacturers are softening their products by fitting sumptuous carpets it’s great to be able to offer customers a good, honest workhorse that’s easy to clean inside. It’s not only popular with farmers but people from all walks of life. And with prices beginning at only £14,995 plus VAT, we can’t get enough of them. The Steed is covered by a comprehensive 125-mile / 6-year warranty. Our Tewkesbury Road dealership is also well known for its used 4x4s, and in addition to approved used Great Wall Steeds and SsangYong Korandos, you’ll find popular models such as the Suzuki Vitara, Nissan QASHQAI, Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV.”

SERVICING In addition to providing full-aftersales for the news and used car sales operation, Autovillage’s workshop technicians on Tewkesbury Road perform servicing, repairs and MOTs on any make or model of vehicle, their labour rates being extremely competitive.

rise. We offer a wide range of models encompassing city cars, hatchbacks, saloons, estates and MPVs. You’ll find a terrific selection of prestige sports cars, convertibles, saloons, coupes and 4x4s displayed, each one prepared to our extremely high standard and covered by a reassuringly comprehensive warranty.”

AUTOVILLAGE OUT AND ABOUT Autovillage has been out and about around the area bringing its cars to the public within shopping centres and various regional events such as the Cotswold Show, the Frampton Show and the Gloucestershire Motor Show. This year, Autovillage is the new main sponsor of the Cotswold Team Chase Point-To-Point meeting on Sunday October 26th. The dealership is to supply four-wheel drive vehicles to the event’s official vet, doctor and Clerk of the Course.

“OUR PHILOSOPHY IS SIMPLE” Paul Boyce concludes: “We’ve enjoyed considerable success over the past 10 years and would like to thank our customers and suppliers for their support. Our philosophy is simple. We like to treat people in the same manner as we would expect to be treated ourselves, whilst at the same time recognising that buying a car, or having one maintained, can often be a very stressful experience for many people, but never at Autovillage. Here’s to the next 10 years!” Find out more logging onto www.autovillage.uk.com. You’ll find Autovillage at the following two locations:

More than a TIN BOX… Eric Barton borrows the new generation Land Rover Defender from T H White Land Rover and puts it through its paces It may be the end of an era for the Queen’s favourite 4x4, but this steadfast beauty has a legacy that’s as long as a coat of arms. The current Defender is due to halt production in 2015, due to legislation and we’re keeping an eye out for news of its replacement, which is sure to be just as impressive. The Defender can be traced back to early 1990s but is in fact based on a 1948 design. The last models will roll off production lines next year, and as a nod to it’s incredible history it has featured in James Bond and Tomb Raider films, among others, but as we all know it was originally built with farmers, and sprawling estates in mind i.e. mud and farm tracks! A cracking all-new successor for the 21st century is ready to step into the fray. Big changes for a big brand. The Land Rover Defender is, like the original MINI, one of the most iconic British cars of all time, renowned for its rugged capability and dependability. Its much-loved design has remained largely unchanged since its launch 65 years ago. While it’s still unbelievably capable offroad, given its age, the Land Rover Defender is something of an acquired taste if you have to travel regularly on motorways. But remember that’s not its primary function: It’s made to be ploughed through the up’s and downs of the countryside in and around Wiltshire etc. The vehicle was picked up from the knowledgeable T H White Land Rover, which is just five minutes from junction 16 of the M4, so it was put through its paces on a stretch of motorway, and to my surprise it was quieter and more comfortable than I expected. Who’d have thought it to look at it. All Defender models are built to be basic. But to me that’s no bad thing, as there’s very little to go wrong. This means that like some old opera singers, it will go on forever, and as such there’s still a strong demand from urban and country types alike. As another bonus it really holds its value. The Land Rover Defender is available in a wide range of body styles, the most

“For what it lacks in luxury, and understandably so, there's absolutely nothing that can touch the Land Rover Defender off road or round slippery country lanes.” popular of which are the short-wheelbase 90 model and the long-wheelbase 110 variant. There is also a Defender van, as well as the enormous 130 double cab pick-up truck, plus some special editions. The Land Rover Defender X-Tech gets a trendy body kit, plus special edition alloy wheels and a range of colours. On the inside, it also received non-standard Defender options such as airconditioning, a heated windscreen and electric windows. The 2.2-litre engine is both simple and robust and returns a respectable 2528mpg with emissions ranging from 266g/km of CO2 to 295g/km. Unlike many modern off-roaders, the Land Rover Defender is a no-nonsense looking vehicle with its boxy shape, sturdy abrupt lines and wide panel gaps adding to its chunky character. Step inside the Land Rover Defender and you’re in a world of sparseness. This is good. Remember this is a utility vehicle. The seats are adjustable with the driving position offering good visibility. The dash is super simple to use because they’ve kept it, quite rightly, to the basics. It’s more functional than it is aesthetic. Land Rover gives most Defenders electric windows, a CD player and remote central locking. Alloy wheels, extra speakers and sat-nav are also available as options. For what it lacks in luxury, and understandably so, there’s absolutely nothing that can touch the Land Rover Defender off road or round

slippery country lanes. The solid chassis feels like granite and the high ground clearance, amazing axle articulation and four-wheel drive with low range gearing options will get you over anything. The Land Rover Defender is powered by a 120bhp, 2.2-litre diesel engine and has loads of torque. The short-wheelbase Defender 90 models return 28mpg, while the long-wheelbase 110 manages 25mpg. Defender buyers can choose between two and seven seats, all of which include a huge amount of boot space and a hosedown floor. While it may not be glamorous, it’s incredibly useful if you need a workhorse…and that’s really what the Defender is all about. This incredible utility vehicle has been largely unchanged for 6 years. And why? Because it’s a brilliant design made to do a job... and do it well. No wonder Her Majesty loves it. If you’ve always fancied owning a Defender but never quite got round to it, the only note of caution I have is to encourage you to put your order in soon, as time is limited and like any iconic vehicle coming to the end of its era, the last few models are bound to be snapped up quickly. Why Jeremy Hunt should call me for an NHS Birth Plan

ow, I’m not saying I’m an expert, but when did we lose so much confidence in parenting, that we started giving a food width selection to children? I only ask, because last week my friend not only offered her 3 children a choice of meals but having established that pasta had the royal seal of approval, she then asked if they wanted tagliatelle or spaghetti with their “special red sauce” (that Annabel Karmel’s got a lot to answer for). Not only did they get to specify the content, they had a choice of materials! Unsurprisingly a unanimous decision couldn’t be reached, so yet more choices were proffered. Reader, I couldn’t help myself; Nanny McSurtees had to step in to show them how mealtimes should be conducted: “Either sit down and eat it – or be put outside in the cold? Which do you choose?” Unsurprisingly, dinner was then, literally, back on the menu but it made me realise that when your kids are young you’re so bloody knackered most of the time you don’t have the strength to set boundaries, never mind

enforce them. Surely there's a market out there for a teatime help? A NaziNanny who swoops in for those stressful mealtimes, sits with the little darlings and forces (sorry encourages), them to eat the nutritional meal you’ve lovingly cooked? It’s such a shock when you first become a mother. I’ve no complaints about our hardworking midwives or NHS obstetrics but the services are so driven by targets nowadays, new mothers are urged to get out of their hospital beds before you can say stitch me up and pass me my breast pad. You’re more exhausted than you’ve ever been in your life (it’s not called labour for nothing) but simultaneously have complete responsibility for this amazing, demanding, crying creature, which insists on waking you at the darkest hour of the night, as your husband lies sleeping soundly beside you (4 nights of wetting the baby’s head can really take it out of a man....). You’d pay anything to hand over your bundle and sleep for 14 hours straight without having to worry about the washing mountain piling up and remedies for colic. So here’s my idea: Instead of going straight home within 8 hours of giving birth, how about have a really useful medical insurance, which paid

”YOU’RE MORE EXHAUSTED THAN YOU’VE EVER BEEN IN YOUR LIFE (IT'S NOT CALLED LABOUR FOR NOTHING) BUT SIMULTANEOUSLY HAVE COMPLETE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS AMAZING, DEMANDING, CRYING CREATURE, WHICH INSISTS ON WAKING YOU AT THE DARKEST HOUR OF THE NIGHT... ” out for you to go on a luxury mini break with a difference. One that specialises in looking after new mothers, providing them with delicious hot meals (prepared for you), luxurious linen (washed for you) and supportive staff who can let you sleep with abandon, knowing your little darling is in safe hands. After all you’re not strictly ill when you’ve had a baby – you just need a bloody good rest. The NHS would save a fortune because as many of us know, sleep deprivation is the worst part of becoming a new parent. But since The Surtees Sleeps Hotel Group doesn’t yet exist, why not just utilise a bit of schadenfreude. To make your partner share your suffering during childbirth, copy an ancient South American tribe; the elders simply tie a piece of rope to the fathers’ testicles, and every time the woman has a contraction, she pulls on it. Hard. It won’t ease your labour pains. But at least he’ll have to cut back on his nights out....

I would love to hear from you! Please write to me, Amanda Toner (maiden name Surtees!) via editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

I

Unbelievable!! Columnist Sandra Paul looks at some of the excellent standards she has recently experienced in the service industry

started off last month bemoaning the state of the nation and the appalling service standards we in Britain almost expect when we walk into retail stores or talk to a call centre. This month, however, I want to applaud those people or brands who make my heart lift and make me think life isn’t all that bad. I love Waitrose. Don’t dismiss me just because you think I’m that stereotype of loaded mummy, loving her free coffee and essentials from Waitrose. I love Waitrose because the staff are oldschool. I’ve even experienced a smile or five and in my life – someone who smiles makes my day. Even better, one day, at the checkout, the man on the till told me practical, real ways I could save money. He didn’t need to go this extra step. He wasn’t in line for a bonus by giving just that extra bit. But he demonstrated great customer service. In most supermarkets one is lucky to get a please or thank you. My personal oasis of good service and serenity, however, is Waterstones. From the moment you walk in you can sense order, niceness, intelligence, pretty knickknacks, not too many young children screaming around and an upstairs floor where the real nerds lurk. I love the staff – they actually seem to enjoy their work. I love the books obviously too and I like the different nooks and crannies where you can browse and while away a few minutes or have a coffee upstairs. I have often dreamt of working in Waterstones. I know I live in la la land but in my head, all the job spec requires you to do is read books, write the occasional review and do a stint or two on the till. And talk to people nicely. Like me. I would love to spend my days reading and talking to people about books. In Waterstones, each time I order a book or ask for some help, I get eye contact – I mention this, because it seems just not normal anymore in the British service society. A good friend of mine took the time to let me know about some sterling

service she had received recently. What a remarkable situation we have created - a society where we don’t expect good behavior or service, so when we do get it, such as, ‘Wow, I had eye contact!’ you want everyone to know. Anyway, Hannah a waitress at Ask! Restaurant in Cheltenham – is another example of someone who always gives unbelievably good service. To quote my friend: ‘She’s always happy, she rushes around making sure ones order is being handled super efficiently, nothing is too much trouble and she is brilliant with children.’ Give that girl a bonus because she deserves it! Speaking of things that make me happy. Rain does not. And this recent weather has highlighted to me, once again, the failing state of our society – or parts of it at least.

With the non-stop rain, we have to live with non-stop puddles and I’ve have witnessed more than once this week, cars driving deliberately close to pedestrians to soak them. I have been desperately trying to memorise their number plates so I can report them to the police. How can these people sleep at night? Why can’t I memorise more than 3 letters and numbers at a time? Unbelievable. Use me to rant and send your examples of ‘unbelievable’ behaviour – or indeed great behavior!
