Welcome Welcome to the Rugby World Cup edition of Cotswold Style. While we may not be basking in any on-the-field English success so far, I am sure most of you will agree that this massive, global tournament has been a huge triumph for our small part of the country with Gloucester Rugby Club hosting a number of high profile fixtures. Our Fashion Editor Yvette Brentnall descended with her crew to the base of the Tongan rugby team, Cheltenham Tigers Rugby Club for a shoot with a difference. Gorgeous models and a fine array of players from the club’s 1st XI showcased collections from local menswear designer Raging Bull, along with glamorous dresses for the girls. Our rugby theme continues as we meet this month’s Real Life, Trevor Woodman who discusses his triumph winning the Rugby World Cup back in 2003. Former Springbok, Thinus Delport is Castaway to Fiji and some of our feature writers relate their hilarious stories attending matches – Claire in the County has been checking out some chunky thighs and The Cotswold Gent is nostalgically singing rugby anthems. Cotswold Culture looks at the history of the “hooligans game played by gentlemen”. This month we have also been looking after the neglected teenager. I’m sure there’ll be many of you who realise your teenagers’ bedrooms are still a mass of fairies and cowboys, so Interiors Editor, Emeline Watchorn has been looking at quirky ideas to update their rooms without breaking the bank. Angela Chancellor has been busy nosing around Cotswoldia, checking out some of the smartest parties of the younger generation and Shelle Duffin creates a ‘match tea’ of cheese and pickles sausage rolls, perfect after a hard game of rugby for those testosterone filled boys. Our travel adventuress Lucy Garbutt has been on an iridescent journey to view the natural wonders of Vietnam while our intrepid couple, Mrs & Mr Jones have been dipping their toes into the crystal clear waters of the Aegean while weekending on the Bodrum Peninsula in Turkey. An action packed October of rugby and the start of the racing season at Cheltenham awaits us.

REAL LIFE

TREVOR WOODMAN Eloise Hillier-Richardson spoke to 2003 Rugby World Cup winning player, Trevor Woodman he roar of the Australian Olympic Stadium is almost too much to bear, the scoreline is 17-17 and everything rests on these final moments. The ball is thrown back into the hands of Jonny Wilkinson, he kicks, it fizzes towards the posts and over it goes, silhouetted against Sydney's inky black skyline. Jubilation from the crowd and a look of delighted bewilderment on the face of Wilkinson as the ball is seen safely through. But it’s not over yet as here comes the all-important restart. Clinched by Trevor Woodman, it’s sent back to Mike Catt to be kicked securely into touch. They had done it. The score, 20-17 in the closing seconds. The Rugby World Cup belonged to England! In the autumn of 2003, Trevor Woodman alongside a 30-man strong England squad, stepped out to gain an historic and euphoric victory over Australia to win the Rugby World Cup. Twelve years on, on the eve of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, hosted in part here in Gloucestershire, Trevor spoke about his career, the importance of perseverance and his family life in the Cotswolds. For Trevor, rugby was woven into the tapestry of life growing up in Cornwall and watching his father play the game, so for him playing the sport seemed like the path of inevitability. It wasn’t though until making the Cornwall Under 16’s that the realisation dawned upon him, that this could be a full-time career. “I guess it all started, going down to the rugby club on Saturdays and watch-ing my dad play. Coming from Cornwall, everything is rugby, farming and tourism – my life started playing at the same rugby club where I’d meet my friends and hang out and it wasn’t really until the Under 16’s that I thought I could make something out of this. You get through all the trials and you play for your county, which was a massive thing back then,

T

14 OCTOBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE

then you represent the South West, you’re playing against London and the South East and suddenly you start thinking, if I knuckle down here I can actually do something.” Moving to play for Gloucester in 1995, this nascent realisation was blossoming into a reality. Trevor said, “I first knew then that I was going to be a professional rugby player. My good friend Phil Vickery had joined a few months earlier and we decided ‘let’s move up together, let’s get a house together, let’s give it a crack’.” And so Cornwall’s loss was the Cherry and White’s gain as they procured two stalwarts of rugby who did indeed ‘give it a crack’. Yet the path to success wasn’t a simple one, amongst the euphoric highs came shattering lows and throughout Trevor’s career he experienced knocks, which would put lesser men off the game for good. At this point in his career the next obvious move was working towards representing England. “Playing for England A back then, was the realisation that you’re not far away, you can represent your country. I was very fortunate to have such a decent group of players at Gloucester that were playing a good brand of rugby, with great coaches and it was that, that put me to the next level. I received my first England cap in 1999, which was actually the preparation for the 1999 World Cup squad, for which I was hoping to be selected.” Trevor’s high hopes of making the final 30 were, however, dashed within the last

week of selection. Although admitting this was a brutal blow, his even temperament and enlightened outlook ultimately meant this decision acted as the driving force for the next step in his career. “I said to myself ‘right I want to make the next one’. I didn’t want to do all that hard work and training, two or three months of preparation, to then have that disappointment again. I was determined to knuckle down but in my career I was often affected by injuries.” Only one year out from the 2003 Rugby World Cup, Woodman faced the biggest blow to his career to date. Two days after playing an integral part in England’s emphatic defeat over New Zealand, Trevor popped a disc in his neck during in a scrummaging session. “I was on a complete high beating New Zealand at home; Twickenham was absolutely rocking you couldn't even hear yourself think the crowd was so loud and then two days later I’m laying in bed, I could hardly move my neck, thinking will I may never play rugby again.” His reaction to this potentially career-ending event is testament to his character. “My mentality was always - you get knocked down, you don’t get selected or you have an injury you have fight to get back up - I mean you can take the other route and chuck your toys out the pram and give everything up but I refused to do that.” It is this stoicism, which is attributable to his successful selection for the 2003 squad and subse-quent coaching career. Yet, the pattern of exalting highs and

Style Real Life

crushing lows which plagued Trevor’s career was to repeat itself once again when injury only two years post the World Cup victory forced him to retire from playing professional rugby for good. “Sometimes you’ve got to realise you could be just one game away, one injury away and suddenly professional rugby is gone. I had to go through that when I retired [at 28]. I took a year to get fit again, to try and get back but couldn’t.” For someone whom Rugby has been such an integral part of their life it would be difficult to see how you would face such adversity but Trevor returned to the scene of his victorious World Cup triumph, to the sunny skies of Australia, where he turned to train as a professional rugby coach. After a successful three years coaching at Sydney University and as Wallaby National Scrum coach developing all age

groups, Trevor came back to Britain, firstly to coach at London Wasps and ultimately to return to the Cotswolds to bring up his daughter, where to his delight he found himself dividing his time between coaching the rugby teams at Cheltenham College and as the Scrum coach for Gloucester. “I’ve always kept a base here in the Cotswolds and I love living in Cheltenham. It’s been pretty much been my home for the past twenty years. I thought I would prefer to have my daughter in a setting like this where I have a support base and friends rather than in London. I spoke to Cheltenham College about coaching their pupils while I put Charlotte through school. It was interesting to coach at grassroots level as it was something I’d never done before. It actually opens up your coaching style because you have to work right from the basics up.”

Keen to improve his coaching style this situation was ideal, as it was good for his development and meant he could coach day in, day out on the field, taking a more hands on approach, not simply stuck watching and analysing rugby on a screen. Asked what the pressure is like on young people in rugby today from his experience and how to cope with them as a parent, Trevor said, “As a parent you always want to think you’re doing the best for your child. I think there is far more pressure on young people than in my day when you just went down to play rugby for fun and there was no academies to be selected for. The kids nowadays are going to academies for under 15s and they could be one of a hundred kids. Obviously you can’t take them all through to the next level, you have to cut it down. How do they cope with that rejection at such an early age and how do the parents react to it, do they just say, ‘Look give it the best you can and if it works out great, if it doesn't at least you’ve tried your hardest’ and encourage them to still enjoy it for the same reason they started – it’s very difficult.” Finally, I couldn’t leave without tapping Trevor for his predictions for this year’s World Cup and if the England team has what it takes to triumph? Going into the 2003 World Cup, England had an air of invincibility about them; they had made Twickenham a fortress and won overseas in the hosts’ back yard. Now, in what Trevor refers to as ‘the group of death’ and facing the stark reality that a top six rugby nation may not make the quarter finals, what are England’s prospects? Trevor emphasises the importance of not under-estimating teams from smaller nations, like Fiji, who proved to be a tough start for England and then of course as writing this, the emphatic victorious Japanese win over the mighty Springboks. Referring back to 2003 he said, “We (England) had done all the preparation; everyone trusted each other with regards to their position, there were obviously a few sticky moments along the way against Samoa and Wales but ultimately we knew that if we were behind in a game whether it 10, 15 or 20 points down, it didn’t matter, we could still win and that’s where we had that sheer self-belief.” Does the England team going into it this year have that confidence? A question we are eagerly awaiting the answer to! COTSWOLD STYLE OCTOBER 2015 15

“Give a man a fish...” Clive Burling encourages you to DIY ollowing my piece in August, entitled ‘Don’t Skip it’, I was amused to see that the huge list of interiors related TV programmes covering home improvements, antiques restoration, rejuvenation, recycling and car booting has increased by one recently. This latest offering called ‘money for nothing’ comprises of someone hanging around a local tip somewhere on the south coast and asking people who are about to about consign various unwanted items to landfill, if they would give the item to them instead. The items are then ‘refurbished’, ‘transformed’ or ‘rejuvenated’ and then sold with the proceeds given to the person who was intending to throw the item away. There seems to me to be quite a few flaws in this process, not least that the practice of accosting people at your local tip was outlawed many years ago. Secondly, why on earth, having in one case spent £900 refurbishing a battered chest of drawers (and still selling it for a profit!) give the profit back to the person who was quite happy to throw it away in the first place? Surely that cash should go to a deserving charity and the owner informed of the good deed. Either way the message is clear.... Don’t skip it in the first place! There are so many other options, which should be pursued first; local auction houses, house clearance companies and the numerous charities that will collect any unwanted items, including that battered chest of drawers. As usual I digress - my topic this month is based on the old saying “Give a man a fish and

F

you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for life" or in some cases he’ll just sit in a boat drinking beer all day - but that’s another story! Over the past few months readers will have seen some of the projects I have undertaken to refurbish and rejuvenate all types of furniture, kitchens etc, which have seen better days. The final result in all cases is that the items then takes pride of place in their various homes and takes on a new life. Apart from the follow up requests for more commissions I’m often asked if I can teach the process so that clients can try it Kate Holloway

for themselves. So much so, that I started running a series of painting courses throughout the year in association with my good friend Kate Holloway at Water Lane Workshops in Selsley, near Stroud. These were so popular that Kate has now expanded the workshops to include all kinds of ‘do it yourself ’ one day courses, including garden design, lampshade making, lino cut printing, needlepoint, flower arranging and the ever popular ‘home-made Christmas’ wreath making day. Courses run from 9.30am-3.15pm and include a delicious 2 course lunch, tea, coffee and homemade cakes. The cost is £85 for most workshops, so for full details and dates go to; www.waterlaneworkshops.co.uk or find Water Lane Workshops on Facebook. The next painting day is on Thursday 8th October. Compiled and written by Interiors Editor Emeline Watchorn www.emelinewatchorn.com

For those of you blessed with children, this month we are looking at one of those oh so grey areas in interior design – the teenager’s bedroom. Having outgrown their Cath Kidson cowboy print curtains and pink fluffy fourposter beds, our teens are desperate to have a space they feel reflects their individuality with minimal interference from their parents. So with a bit of luck, these ideas will give you hope and inspire your teenagers as although the ideas are groovy, they hopefully don’t offend your own refined tastes!

A Girl Can dream by Jackie Magzine from The Beano Collection, Mural from £60, Surfaceview. www.surfaceview.com

Above: “Benzene” wall sticker is available in 5 sizes and 35 colours: 40x45cm - £18.32, 60x68cm – £32, 80x90cm – £45.60, 100x113cm – £59.92, 120x135cm – £78.32, www.wall-art.com, +44-20-86380150, info@wall-art.com. This very cool on line company stock hundreds of wall stickers from footballers to rock stars and everything in-between. It’s a quick and easy way to spruce up your teenagers room and relatively reasonably priced. I may be ambitious in assuming your teenager wants a chemical symbol to go on their walls but you never know! With such a big selection on offer, there is bound to be something that he/she likes. Right: Zig cushion, £12, Habitat. www.habitat.co.uk. Bright fun and well priced, these cushions should go down well with the teens.

Selje Bedside table with wireless charger pad, £50, Ikea. www.ikea.com. Where would be without Ikea? It’s the perfect place to find some great buys and is always fresh, youthful and modern. I loved this bedside table as it comes with a wireless charger. How often do teenagers loose their chargers and ‘borrow’ their parents? This way they have no excuse!

‘Plan to wash’ laundry bag, £14, Bodie and Fou. www.bodieandfou.com. There is nothing like a good hint. This stylish laundry bag should drive the point home! Seletti Neon Font Wall Light, Heal’s. www.heals.com. 0207 896 7451. Attitude goes with the territory with our teenagers and I thought this sign was uber cool and fun. Again a quick and simple way to make a statement that won’t break the bank.

Through the Garden Gate

alk of a milestone usually drums up images of impending age and the ever quickening passage of time, however I’ve found a milestone in Greet where time stands still as the plants and goodness surrounding you can’t help but raise a smile. The charming Helena Cavan and her family moved to Milestone House and its overgrown garden 13 years ago. The home had once belonged to an artist who provided the nature themed artwork for cigarette cards (funnily enough, I have been sorting lots of these lately including some stunning Kensitas floral silks from 1933). It would seem that the creative energy of this previous resident lives on and has joined forces with another nature lover in Helena. For here is a lady who is all about loving the land and the fruit of the land. With this is mind, her garden is now positively brimming with a heavenly harvest – apples in particular sway proudly in the breeze – from ‘Sweet Discovery’ to ‘Braebern’ which, Helena tells me, can keep from November to March in the fridge. Talking of her fridge, it is less of a fridge and more of a three-storey townhouse to my mind, or in this case, fruit house, as it stores

T

Camilla Bassett-Smith is our Cheltenham based media horticulturalist. In a bid to keep healthy and in celebration of the harvest month, she visits a garden that has more than an apple a day on offer… produce for her business but more about this later. Espalier apples have been planted to scan the whole season from June to October and a gorgeous old variety which can cook or eat was inherited with the property. Minarette ‘Williams’ pear trees (small enough to grow in pots) also feature, displaying their Buddha shaped wares – in fact a Buddha shaped fruit seems very apt for this garden as it is all about peace and authenticity. The Morello cherry crop earlier this year was fantastic and I’ve never seen so many damsons on a tree. Rhubarb rubs shoulders with autumn raspberries and a grape vine which comes from cuttings from the famous grape vine at Hampton Court is romping away towards Cleeve Hill with every tendril. So a theme is developing here, surely too much produce for just one family? Well you are correct my clever Cotswoldians – Helena uses these

perfectly pipped fruits, along with a plethora of vegetables, to create juicing and raw food programmes as part of The Milestone Detox which Helena founded in January of this year. With the power to cleanse our body and soul, delicious juices provide us with all the goodness we deserve. Health holidays here offer four juices a day, but these aren’t your ordinary fresh with bits breakfast brand, as Helena says, “We take the energy of something alive and it gives us life”. I partook of an apple and rhubarb concoction and it was sublime – sweet, smooth and surprisingly filling! When not using crops from her garden, she buys organic produce from less than two miles away, often with harvest and consumption on the same day. Cotswolds through and through. Back outside and the autumnal colour in the flower beds creates a wave of hazy peace with ribbons of sedate sedum and the rich dark reds of dahlias opening

“With the power to cleanse our body and soul, delicious juices provide us with all the goodness we deserve.” up their arms for a full bodied embrace as you pass by. Helena created cool colours for the front area of garden – blues, pinks and whites but left room for the back South West area to host the hot contenders, with a late rudbeckia showing off its bright yellow colour and deep black eye. This really is no garden for showing off though, nobody is judged here, you are what you are and that is what makes it so refreshing.

I forgot figs – loads of them and a magnolia grandiflora, which is standing majestically as yet refusing to flower – but Helena has faith that it is only a matter of time and with her on your side, flower it will. Weeds are encouraged much to the joy of the local buzzy things but don’t think they’re escaping the juicer (the weeds that is, not the buzzy things, they are most welcome to spend the rest of their days at The Milestone!). For it’s not just

fruit and vegetables: nettles and dandelions also play their vital liquid part. So here’s to a local garden with a harvest to behold. Let’s sit back, pour a juice and in the words of Helena “Cheers, life in a glass”! Milestone House opens for Winchcombe Open Gardens or is available to visit as a retreat. Style Culture

Cotswolds Culture Susan Blanchfield explains ‘RUGBY FOR ROOKIES’ Almost faint with excitement at the current crop of world class non stop rugby matches and wall to wall TV coverage? The biggest tournament in the rugby world is being hosted on our fair Isle and if you still believe that a ‘Hooker’ drives a hard bargain, a ‘Maul’ is a mean character from Star Wars, if your interpretation of the O2’s ‘wear the rose’ campaign causes you to think you might have to brush up on your Tudor history then you still have work to do. The Rugby World Cup is in Town. And that’s a big deal. Like all sports, rugby is about scoring more points than your rival, by either touching the ball down behind your opponent’s “try line” or kicking it between the goalposts. All very simple, until you throw in a number of seemingly arbitrary rules and terms like ‘forwards’, ‘rucking’ and ‘scrummaging’ and if this isn’t confusing enough remember the ball must always be passed backwards away from the direction in which the players are running. Don’t assume that rugby is like American Football either - NFL is all metal helmets and moisturiser; rugby is the type of sport where player can have his scrotum ripped open and still be totally up for a cheery post match 15 pints with the perpetrator. For the first time viewer, it can appear to be a chaotic collection of indecipherable movements and haphazard collisions but rugby is highly technical and organized with specific laws governing all aspects of play. So, if you want to learn about it you need to watch as much of it as you can. The history of rugby, like football, traces its roots back to ancient England when villages would compete against each other for the possession of a pigs bladder by any means. In the late 1700 and early 1800s, a more civilized type of mob football was a common pastime at English schools. Such games had very loose rules but running with the ball was outlawed. Legend has it that it all changed in 1823 when young William Webb Ellis, a student at Rugby School, picked up the ball and ran toward the goal. After Webb’s scamper, the debate

over whether or not the ball should be carried continued for 40 years until October 1863 when representatives from schools and clubs met at the Freemason’s Tavern (where else!) in London to all hash out official rules of the game. This was the start of amateur Rugby Union Football which led to the professional game of Rugby League.

“Most rugby pitches are windswept and exposed. Be prepared and wrap up in sensible clothes; no-one cares that you own the latest Ilse Jacobsen rub short wellie. No-one.” Rugby is now generally acknowledged as the ‘perfect’ game. The toughness of it – is itself a virtue and there are few games that accommodate such a discrepancy in the physical sizes of the players; the short and squat find a place in the front row; the tall and thin in the second row; the smallest and niftiest is scrum-half; the speedsters are on the wings. Partly because of the way a variety of roles combines in a single purpose, rugby is an excellent way to teach

children and young adults how to become part of a team as most of what happens depends on the co-operation of 15 players, not the flair of one. Rugby’s exacting requirements extend to spectators too – remember this is a winter game; unless you are fortunate enough to enjoy the comfort of hospitality or you have a ticket to a top league stadium, you will stand on the sidelines of pitches and wonder how it can be this cold. Most rugby pitches are windswept and exposed. Be prepared and wrap up in sensible clothes; no-one cares that you own the latest Ilse Jacobsen rub short wellie. No-one. 02, the official sponsor of the Rugby World Cup is calling on the nation to get behind England and the Rugby World Cup so you won’t be able to ignore it. The RFU are desperate to promote rugby and they have produced “an idiot’s guide” to explain everything to the uninitiated so that hopefully, the sight of sixteen chaps in a scrummage will not be mistaken for a sort of male bonding ritual group hug. If you need to, read the RFU idiots guide, brush up on your Sweet Chariot and get tribal; this is one World Cup we might actually win. Castaway COLLECTION

Former Springbok Rugby player, Thinus Delport is a stalwart of the Gloucester and Worcester Rugby scene. From touching down on the pitch to holding the scrum when presenting on Sky TV, Thinus has earned his place in the Rugby fraternity. The Rugby World Cup will be taking over host cities and dominating our TV screens this autumn, with nearby Gloucester a hive of activity. Ellie Mainwaring caught up with Thinus ahead of the Rugby World Cup kick-off. Where in the world would you choose to be castaway to and why?

An Island in Fiji. Besides the glorious sunshine and stunning scenery, I’m sure I would be able to kick start a game of beach Touch Rugby somewhere to keep up my skills. What item of jewellery or accessory would you take?

My Suunto Core watch. I bought it in the land of gadgets when I was living in Japan. It has features including a compass and barometer, which would prove useful for predicting a tropical storm brewing. You can take the entire works of one musician to your desert island, who will it be and why?

Bon Jovi. His back catalogue would give me a great mix of classic feel good anthems to liven my spirits on more lonely days and also the occasional power ballad for more dramatic moments. Our family dog Rocco the Hungarian Vizsla. He’s a great companion and an enormous piece of my family back home. He would also help me forage for food on the island – although no doubt the greedy pooch would snaffle it up before sharing it with me. What animal or pet would you take?

Name one possession you would take and one to leave behind for a loved one.

Take – I’d take a photograph of my family; a carefully chosen reminder of a holiday or fond memory together. Leave – A sack full of rugby balls to keep my children entertained with hours of endless fun. There’s a well-known saying, “you should always invest in a good bed and a good pair of shoes, because if you are not in one, you are in the other”. With this in mind, my luxury item would be an inflatable mattress. Not only would this provide me a good night sleep but would also double as a raft for exploring the surrounding ocean. What would be your luxury item?

What would be your last supper before departing for your desert island?

A touch of my wife’s fantastic home cooking - a good quality fillet steak served medium rate with strong Stilton sauce and roasted seasonal veggies. You can take one celebrity companion, dead or alive, who will it be?

Bear Grylls. For sure he would be a resourceful partner on the island and could help us tackle a sticky situation or two!

Style Cotswoldia

Cotswoldia Angela Chancellor has been nosing around some of the smartest parties… of our bright young things s damp descends on the English countryside it’s time to say goodbye to the jollities of summer and prepare for the bleaker times ahead. As if the prospect of permanently wet feet and soggy Spaniels’ hair isn’t bad enough we now have the prospect of ‘Jezzer’ dominating our current ‘affairs’. Yes, there will be a lot of mirth and hearty snorting at dinner parties up and down the land and especially throughout Conservativeshire for the season ahead but despite the AGA being turned back on; there will remain a bit of a chill underfoot. While we are waiting for the invitations for dinner to role in and our little darlings have gone back to school, I am catching up with all my girlfriends and hearing about their summers and here is what they had to tell me... Welcome to the teenage party challenge. You’ve done laser tag, quad biking, had the make-up artist down from London and frankly they have outgrown the ‘entertainer’ format, no matter how much neon is involved. Lets face it they are past all that, so lets take a look at what ‘that’ can entail. One friend recently hosted her daughter’s first teen party at their new house near Stroud. Delighted with her nice, shiny new pool, she thought she had it made... daytime pool party followed by a bit of camping with a handful of mostly Pate’s Grammar educated friends. What can possibly go wrong? All went swimmingly while the sun was out but along with twilight the uninvited guests started descending down the drive. The likely lads of course professed to be ‘invited’; at this age you might be expecting a few chancers trying for a freebie, we are living in the era of social media after all but turns out they were trying to deliver herbal refreshments. Luckily mum was a bit more street smart than her grammar educated offspring. Cheltenham Ladies girls are no slouches either and not shy of a few celebrity offspring. If your little princess is being

A

“One little darling that couldn’t face the long arduous journey by something as pedestrian as a car (even if said car was a plush limo with all the toys), sent for daddy’s helicopter to drop her off...” educated here, chances are you might have an invitation coming your way. No one wants to be a bore but if your 14 year old is invited to a party in London it is fairly normal to have a quick parent-to-parent chat first, to get the lay of the land. Even more so if the parents are famously jetsetting partying types and may not have the same idea of what constitutes ‘appropriate’ but if said parents have spent the last decade honing their ‘civilian avoiding skills’, good luck, as their contact details most certainly won’t be on the RSVP and it can take a good few weeks to track them down. Limos to London are becoming more and more de-rigueur at some of the choicer educational establishments these days too I am afraid and the fun is certainly not expected to stop there. Anything less than a prime seat in VIP and the obligatory ‘Dom’ with sparklers on tap will not make a suitable impression. One little darling that couldn’t face the long arduous journey by something as pedestrian as a car (even if

said car was a plush limo with all the toys), sent for daddy’s helicopter to drop her off just in time for the fun to start, thus also neatly avoiding the rather uncouth choice of burger restaurant that was being proffered. Jolly marvellous to receive invitations like these but how does one measure up? A night at the movies with a bit of pizza is not going to excite I am afraid and certainly won’t hold much sway on FB or Instagram. So for the more normal of us parents it’s probably back to the garden arrangements and make it all look as glam as possible in the vain hope it might pass as a ‘festival’ of sorts. If you are thinking that delegating the sleeping arrangements to a tented abode will at least keep the worst mess out of the house, you have made a wise choice in this respect. Nothing though, will prepare you for what you may find littering corners that offer any privacy to the revellers the following morning. I think you can probably guess what I am alluding too. Yikes!

Keeping your pets SAFE AND SOUND Animal advice from our friends at Vets on the Park Now I know you probably think that summer is just over but this is the time of year that we start preparing for the dangers of bonfire night and New Year fireworks. So many owners come to us each year with dogs that suffer from extreme noise phobias that are triggered, yet again, at this time of the year. We cannot tell you how important it is to try to be prepared and start behavioural modification therapy as early in the firework season as you can, to help prevent this problem. If you’ve not left it too late then you can try desensitisation, using specially recorded ‘Sounds Scary’ CDs. These special discs contain a variety of sounds that dogs often fear and they can be played at a very low volume and slowly increased as your dog because tolerant to the sounds. They work very well when used hand in hand with some natural calming products. We find ‘Zylkene’ a natural product made from milk protein very useful in promoting relaxation and helping dogs cope with these louder and louder sounds. If you’ve not got much time or you’ve

tried behavioural modification and it hasn’t worked for you then it is vital that you are very well prepared for the big night. Ask your vet about ‘Adaptil’ collars, diffusers and sprays. These pheromones cannot be smelled by you but will only be detected by the target species. It is the same smell that is released by bitches after giving birth and when detected later in life, dogs feel a sense of calm and well-being. A safe

hide-away or den is also vital, where your pet can go to get away if things get too much. Most vets can give you detailed advice about how and where to build your safe den. For cats you need to think in 3 dimensions and allow your cat to retreat to a hiding place up high, so maybe start clearing to top of the book case or wardrobe. Some pets need more intensive help with drug therapy but by working in partnership with your veterinary practice most dogs and cats can get through the long dark winter evenings ahead without being too worried about things that go bump or bang in the night. At Vets on the Park we run free firework advice consultations so if you need help with this problem then simply call us on 01242 517199 or visit our website www.vetsonthepark.co.uk where you can now book an appointment online.

VIETNAM Vibrant culture & natural wonders Self-professed adventuress and Travel Writer Lucy Garbutt travels to Laos, one of Asia’s most beautiful and untouched gems in the heart of the Golden Triangle he former French colonies of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are known collectively as Indochina. The mighty coffee-coloured Mekong River carves its course through these countries to connect Thailand and the cultural and geographic spirit of the region. I was lucky enough to visit Laos - a gentle country of Asian tradition and colonial influences. Its people are diverse and remarkable and wherever you go they display a gracious hospitality which makes it a very special place to explore. go they display a gracious hospitality which makes Vietnam a very special place to explore. A railway journey is an excellent way to explore Northern Vietnam and watch life outside the window pass you by and my first experience was from Hanoi to Sapa. Rumbling North by overnight train through iridescent rice terraces, with a bustle of life beside the track, I was soon in Sapa, in the far north-west of Vietnam in a world of towering peaks and lush river valleys. Trekking through intriguing hill tribe villages while breathing in the dramatic scenery and crystal clear mountain air, I was in a land time has forgotten. The trek was a most peaceful, spiritual and rejuvenating experience the benefits

of which l still feel today! Serenity was retained by the spirituality of the mountains as the train meandered its way gently back to the bustle of Hanoi, the delightful capital of Vietnam. The exotic style of old Asia with its traditional coffee bars and ancient French townhouses blends with the new, with its Parisian-style pavement cafes perfect for some people-watching and sampling the delicious local cuisine. Even more exciting was the opportunity to trundle

around the tree-lined French quarter by Cyclo or head deep into the narrow streets of the interior to explore the wonderful bustling markets, the rather unusual people who run them and the exquisite street cuisine they provide. A four hour drive from Hanoi is Halong Bay. The area is a stunning seascape of over two thousand magical limestone islands and lovely beaches bathed by the warm crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Tonkin and once again I found myself enveloped by the serenity and spirituality of Vietnam. Basking in

glorious hot sunshine and a warm rippling breeze, I explored the area floating aboard a junk. The tiny islands are dotted with caves, grottoes and beaches and the surrounding scenery of towering mountains and lush forests is one of Vietnam’s most dramatic natural sights. With its colourful markets, dramatic mountains, cosmopolitan cities and golden beaches, Vietnam enjoys the full spectrum and is blessed with an intoxicating mix of cultures and stunning natural beauty.

A trip to Vietnam combines very well with Cambodia and Laos. r M & Mrs Jones

Somewhere for the Weekend? Our very own Cotswoldia couple, Mrs and Mr Jones, hosts our short haul travel section. They thoroughly investigate destinations ideal for a little trip away revealing vital tips on a glamorous getaway and also provide the inside track to ensure the destination caters for a range of tastes and wallets. From the slickest city hangouts to peaceful boltholes, you won’t waste a moment planning your travels. This month we visit Bodrum in Turkey

BODRUM

Mr Jones observed to me that there have been varying degrees of bellicose unpleasantness between the Turks and the Greeks over the years and oddly enough, there are still two camps; those who firmly favour a holiday in Greece and those in Turkey. Those in the Turkish camp find the drier intense heat of Turkey far less humid than Greece, the water bluer, the food more varied and the people more hospitable and charming. Mr Jones would say Bodrum in particular, has always been highly underrated as a European holiday destination. To some it is the ‘new age’ Nice with its wide range of hotels and restaurants that are of surprising high quality to those that think Turkey has never been up with the pace of other destination thoroughbreds. The Bodrum Peninsula is located on the western coast of Turkey. It’s fringed with a crystal clear stretch of the Aegean, and is only 20 minutes to the recently established international airport. The Peninsula is a multi-dimensional gem with varying small bays and inlets, each having their own micro culture, catering to varying budgets and tastes. At its centre, tall, proud and exotic sits the seductive port of Bodrum.

The Peninsular...

Ignoring at all costs Gumbet, ‘All about Essex’ says Mr Jones, look to many of 56 OCTOBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE

the other areas; Turkbuku , has been touted in the NY Times as Turkey’s San Tropez and attracts the glitterati from Istanbul and various European cities. Take a jeep or hire a gulet and visit the long stretch of sand that is Ortakent, the sea side village of Torba , the calm waters of Bitez, the virgin cove of Mazi and fishing haven of Yalikavak. Lazy bay-hopping in a gulet, the traditional boat for these waters, was conceived in Bodrum. You can sail for a bit, drop anchor in some empty little cove where nothing has changed in 2,000 years and swim around in clear blue water. There are many boats for hire in the port of Bodrum, but fortunately Mr Jones, who considers himself quite a sailor and adroit in all matters nautical, has struck a maritime deal, exclusive to Cotswold Style, with the Captain of Bodrum Yacht Club, Gunel Zafer whose yacht is for hire with or without crew. Contact Gunel at +90 532 231 7804 or gunelzafer@gmail.com. Mrs Jones prefers to leave any forays into the unspoiled peninsula until after 3pm, when the heat drops. Hop on a dolmus public minibus. They’re cheap and handy and criss-cross the high and ancient terrain of terraced fields, giving thrilling glimpses of islands, capes and inlets on a brilliant aquamarine sea. Take a good guidebook to seek out deserted villages, monasteries and ancient rock tombs.

Eating and Drinking... As sophistication has sensuously and seductively smoothed its way up the side of Turkey’s coast, so has its cuisine. Its traditional food is still to be found for the traveller who prefers to go native whilst international tastes are matched by good quality cosmopolitan restaurants.

Go Native...

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for Turks with which they drink tea saving the famous coffee for after the meal. It’s a salty and sweet experience, crumbling white creamy cheeses, black and green olives, big juicy tomatoes and cucumbers and sucuklu, a spicy egg and sausage combination followed by homemade jams and honeys. Mrs Jones has a nose for finding out what the native’s prefer. For a truly Turkish experience she found SoganSarmisak Kafe at the southern end of Gumusluk, literally the onion and garlic café! In essence, it is an invitation to eat traditional Turkish food with a Turkish family but has evolved more into a Turkish café for guests, even the former German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder has been spotted eating here. For the very best kebabs, and let’s be honest, says Mr Jones, there are no authentic kebabs in the UK, make a special trip to Yalikavak where you will find Kavakli Kofteci. - a place where most tourists pass by. After a salivary

Bartering in Bodrum – Shop Local... nosh wander up the road to Bitez Dondurma for some extraordinary icecream to balance the unctuousness of the kebabs with the frozen creaminess of Turkish milk and fruit.

Eating Up...

Mr Jones has his own black book of favourite restaurants, one of which is Kocadon, just tucked away from the main drag in a cobbled courtyard. The owner is a delightful Dutch lady and her husband, the Turkish chef. This is a Turkish restaurant bordering on the seriously quite good, their starter plate of calamari ‘three ways’ quite exceptional. www.kocadon.com Very much it’s ‘Nice-ist’ and ritzy restaurant, the Bodrum Marina Yacht Club is the place to look in and out – in to see who has just moored their yacht next to yours and out to the best view in Bodrum. The Roof Marine restaurant is the best option and I enjoyed an extremely good sea bass cooked in salt. www.marinayachtclub.com

Staying Up...

Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay Apparently favoured by a few of the top European footballers. Yes, I know who they are, says Mr Jones but he’s not allowed to say. If you really want to live the life of the seriously spoiled then this self-contained complex is for you. In a private and secluded bay, a taxi ride from the airport and outside of Bodrum , nobody will recognise you or say anything if they do. www.kempinski.com/en/bodrum

Macakizi More of the feel of a Caribbean Island hotel, this is another hotel where you want to be seen but not recognised. Great Turkish chef masterminding his open air

restaurant on the jetty. Sexy and slightly chic, the rooms are housed in a series of stone white-washed cottages spilling down the hillside to the sea where the sun decks are lipped by gentle waves. www.macakizi.com Casa Dell’Arte Very much in the fashion of the new ‘ house party’ hotels, says Mrs Jones, this is a ritzy boutique temple to art and fine living, an art gallery with rooms, that probably should read the other way round…. has a high opinion of itself and so it should. With a library, lounge and dining room, bar and Jacuzzi giving on to a jetty and a stretch of beach, this certainly is so exclusive you certainly won’t be seen by anybody else. www.casadellartebodrum.com The Marmara Bodrum Very much the place to stay in Bodrum with marvellous views as it stands above it. A central pool neatly sculpted into the hillside, behind it is an artfully furnished bar and lounge with a shady, cushioned, outdoor chill-out area one this hotel has the best views over Bodrum. Corridors are hung with wrought-iron objets d’art, the passageways framing vistas of the gardens and town. The bedrooms, all with a terrace or balcony, are supremely comfortable, their marble bathrooms dramatically punctuated by large picture windows with views of the grounds beyond. www.slh/themarmarabodrum

Mick Jagger and Donna Karan are among the celebrities who have picked up handmade ‘Bodrum’ sandals from the bazaar. If you’re looking for some retail therapy, Bodrum has it all. The modern bazaar area is an upmarket take on an original Turkish market with proper shops rather than stalls. There’s everything here from gorgeous Turkish and Central Asian textiles and colourful local pottery to a bling-fest of gold jewellery and snazzy beachwear. There is always room for bargaining, a favourite pastime of Mr Jones, who would certainly not put you off haggling for a Turkish rug or carpet. The exchange rate, lira not Euro, is exceptionally good and there is enormous value in Turkish luxury goods.

Night Life...

Very much the centre of night life is the open aired Amphitheatre Halikarnas, a hedonistic Roman orgy of everything a nightclub should be, in a sophisticated fashion of course – brash , bold, camp and completely out there, anybody is welcome. “We’re only young once”, says Mrs Jones. www.halikarnas.com

Style Health

Treating a debilitating health condition Dr Arnold Deering, consultant Physician at Winfield Hospital, explains the challenges for people with Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS). Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) can be a life altering and debilitating chronic health condition. Simply standing up can be a challenge for people with PoTS as their body is unable to adjust to gravity. This condition is characterised by the development of symptoms when upright that are relieved by lying down. Symptoms include headaches, fatigue, palpitations, sweating, nausea, fainting and dizziness and are associated with an increase in heart rate from the lying to upright position of greater than 30 beats per minute, or a heart rate of greater than 120 beats per minute within 10 minutes of standing. Many symptoms are similar to those seen in people diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), so not infrequently PoTS is mistaken for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The treatment of these conditions is very different. PoTS is an abnormality of the autonomic nervous system (sometimes called ‘dysautonomia’). The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is in charge of bodily functions that we don’t have to think about, such as: • Heart rate and blood pressure control • Digestion • Bladder control • Sweating • Stress response

The sympathetic nervous system is part of the autonomic nervous system. It produces the ‘fight or flight’ or ‘stress’ response. When activated, a chemical called noradrenaline is released. Amongst other things, this causes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Symptoms can be debilitating, ranging from mild to severe and varying day to day.

• Dizziness/light-headedness This usually occurs when standing up but

can occur with prolonged sitting. • Fainting/blackouts Approximately 30% of people with PoTS experience fainting. • Palpitations Palpitations are a sensation of your heart pounding in your chest. • Headaches Approximately two thirds of those with PoTS have orthostatic headaches. • Tiredness This is common in PoTS and can last for a considerable time after a bout of PoTS symptoms. • Brain fog Difficulty when thinking or concentrating. • Shakiness Often worse when upright. • Shortness of breath • Chest pain • Gut problems Nausea is common. Other symptoms include diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, abdominal pain and vomiting. Many people with PoTS are told that they have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) • Poor sleep This can be trouble getting to sleep, waking in the middle of the night and trouble getting back to sleep. • Sweating Winfield Hospital offers a full range of diagnostic facilities including: • Blood screening • 24 hour urinary sodium excretion • Tilt table testing • Autonomic nervous system function testing • 24h, 7 day ECG recording • 24h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring

symptoms will improve with a combination of life style changes and medication. Winfield Hospital can provide respite and convalescent care for a range of conditions including acute medical conditions such as, undiagnosed elderly problems, long standing leg ulcers, Diabetes, Cardiac problems, Neurology, Gastroenterology and many more. Whether you are looking for a couple of days of respite care or maybe recovering from an operation or recent illness, our team of specialists can cater for your needs every step of the way. With a single, en suite room and a restful and calm environment to aid your recovery whether self-pay or insured. For further Information speak to your GP or if you have any questions about Medical Services at Winfield Hospital please call us on 01452 337 277 (senior nurse).

Following diagnosis various treatment options will be discussed and a management and follow-up plan will be drawn up. Fortunately, for many patients, COTSWOLD STYLE OCTOBER 2015 59

THE HAIR CONTOURING REVOLUTION nspired by the make-up trend of the moment, hair contouring is a custommade colour application technique that has revolutionised the use of hair colour and what it can achieve. This innovative technique uses the careful placement of colours around the face and thanks to a play of light and shadow, can alter the appearance of your face shape by accentuating your best features and enhancing your natural skin tone without the application of make-up.

I

What is hair contouring? Hair contouring is a colouring technique that uses a combination of free hand application and highlighting paired with the careful positioning of different tones and depths around the face to highlight and shadow targeted areas. Darker tones create shadows and are used to shorten or narrow the face shape, whilst lighter tones elongate and lengthen the face shape by reflecting light. This clever placement of colour and the careful selection of complimentary tones perform an optical illusion and make your face appear more defined and features more accentuated.

Will hair contouring suit me? Definitely! Hair contouring is a 100% bespoke colouring service that is literally designed to suit your unique facial structure, features and skin tone. The colours are selected based on your skin tone and positioned based on your structure and features.

How will a colourist create bespoke contouring for me? Contouring requires the eye of one of our expert colourists. First they identify your unique face shape and bone structure by brushing your hair backwards and behind the ears to expose the full outline of your face. The benchmark that is most commonly used is the ‘oval’ shape due to its

well-balanced and symmetrical proportions. The next step is for your colourist to decode where the darker and lighter shades need to be positioned around your face in order to re-sculpt the appearance and achieve a more ‘oval’ shape. To keep the effect looking natural and subtle, the colour shades chosen should not exceed two shades above or below your natural hair colour and tones should be selected to compliment your

skin. The different colour shades and tones are then applied either free hand for a more subtle finish, or highlighted separately for more defined pieces. This combination allows the colourist to tailor the application to suit you. For more information on hair colour contouring book a bespoke consultation with one of the colour specialists at Laura Leigh Hair and Beauty.

Mind, Body & Soul We discover some of the new, sensational treatments or products available in the Cotswolds and surrounding areas to recuperate your mind, body and soul. Participation in any sport, especially the brutal game of rugby can provide you with some seriously torn and aching muscles. We review two of the best massages to help ease those aches and pains away and leave you feeling revitalized and refreshed.

Angela Chancellor visited the C-Side Spa at Cowley Manor Oh I do like to be beside the seaside ... actually I don't particularly fancy our nearest sandy spot of Weston-SuperMare, even on the occasionally sunny day our climate has to offer. You could tempt me with tickets to Dismaland but so far no one has offered. Much better to head to the C-Side Spa at Cowley Manor. Architecturally you are entering telly tubby land but in a really good adult and sophisticated awardwinning sort of way, as you venture from the main hotel building down into a secret little play land for pleasure seekers. If the sun decides to put his hat on – into the

pool and sun lounger heaven you can play. But the clever bods at Cowley Manor know that an equally stunning 'back up' indoor pool, elegantly lined in soothing green slate is guaranteed to keep even the fussiest customers in a suitably soporific spa mood. In pursuit of a bit of Zen after a long summer of children and husband 24/7, it was high time to find a bit of me time. So off I went to Cowley in my quest and was duly rewarded with a little slice of heaven. Bliss came in the form of C-Side's 'Repair & Restore' massage, which promised nourishing (yes!), releasing tension (snooze mode 5 minutes in, so definitely yes!), boost micro-circulation, skin elasticity and condition (after such a fullon summer running around, much needed!). So I expertly received a combination of deeply nourishing techniques to calm and release tension along with a hand and foot massage focusing on key acupressure points which restores vital energy. My only regret is that I didn't go with a

friend and try lots of other treats, which would make me feel just the littlest bit Miss Greedy.... Repair & Restore Massage - 60 mins ÂŁ75. C-Side Spa at Cowley Manor Tel: 01242 870900 www.cowleymanor.com

Style Health Tim Le Koock visited JOSSPA in Cheltenham I made the huge mistake (in my rather maturing years) to agree to participate in a charity game of rugby during the build up to this Rugby World Cup. What on earth was I thinking as I was left with one collapsed shoulder, a neck that couldn’t turn more than 20 degrees and hamstrings so raw, I felt like the butcher had me maturing upside down on his meat hook for 28 days. The road to recovery was blessed by a Balinese massage with the ‘matron of masseurs’, Johanna Donald, from her urban retreat, JOSSPA in Cheltenham. Balinese is a full-body, deep-tissue, holistic treatment. The Balinese method uses a combination of stretches, acupressure, reflexology and aromatherapy to stimulate the flow of blood and oxygen around your body to bring a sense of calm and utterly deep relaxation but this is a massage with attitude! First I was seated in a chair while Johanna kneaded my neck and shoulder – the pain was actually glorious as she used a variety of techniques including skin rolling, as my shoulder slipped back into its joint. A full body massage followed with expert

There was no gouging here, (as there certainly had been under the scrum!) just sheer relief that I would now be able to maneuver my body about without feeling like the entire Samoan front-row had smacked into me.

Pitch Perfect o it’s Rugby World Cup 2015 and our mad keen Editor challenges me with a shoot at Cheltenham Tigers Rugby Club, who are playing host to the Tongan national team during the tournament. Along with some of the club’s 1st team players as props (excuse the pun!), three rather well defined, beefy guys and two exquisite doll-like girls add to the picture rather like beauty and the beasts… How was this going to be made glamorous? My memories of prep school rugby in the wind and rain, embarrassing the sight out of my son and his school was never a memory of high fashion (fun though!). We used the ‘Raging Bull’ clothing brand,

FIT OF RAGE Shannon Mercer, Managing Director of Raging Bull introduces the brand’s collection for this autumn / winter s a genuine rugby brand we want to keep our look authentic but still develop our ranges and extend into new areas. This autumn we have all the usual subtle rugby references but have included beautifully cut tweed jackets, cashmere/wool sweaters and even more choice of crisp, cotton shirts. Our in house design team is constantly seeking ideas and inspiration, which often comes from our countryside setting just outside Gloucester. There is a gentleman farmer influence to the designs this season, with colours including warm tones of russet, green and blueberry mixed in with the classics. Phil Vickery always runs his eye over the finished collection and has certainly given this one the thumbs up!

TOP TIPS FOR TEENS Amy Hickey checks out the key make up trends for teenage beauty as that dreaded day arrived where your teenage daughter brings out the black kohl liner in force and her lips have taken a bashing with the latest trend of ‘in colour lippy’, giving Boy George a run for his money? Or perhaps your teenager has expressed concern that everyone is wearing make up but doesn’t know where to start? Fear not follow the simple steps below and check out great products to help you and your teenagers out! Make up is a great way to accentuate your natural beauty, to bring out your best features and can aid confidence but if you are just starting out it can be a daunting experience. Get it right and you’ll never look back, get it wrong and you’ll never live it down...

H

Try out these SIX TIPS for an everyday makeup look unique to you: SKINCARE ROUTINE Keep it simple and use as natural products as possible. Cleanse and moisturise your face before you begin. This is an important start to your make up routine.

1

FOUNDATION AND CONCEALER Here’s the key: less is more. Foundation isn’t for everyone because sometimes it can feel and look heavy. If you do want to use it, be sure to always match your skin tone. If you want a lighter coverage, try a tinted moisturiser. I recommend laura mercier’s oil free tinted moisturiser as its silky feel, hydrates the skin and covers imperfections without feeling heavy. Concealer is going to be your go-to beauty item for any unexpected spots that may pop up overnight (or during the day). Pick a colour that works for your skin and lightly dab and blend it over a red spot. Let it dry and then set it with a cotton swab dipped in loose powder.

2

It won’t make your spot disappear but it will definitely be less noticeable so you can go on with your day confidently. Remember you can cover the redness but you can’t get rid of the bump so go easy on how much you shovel on! BLUSH When using blush on your cheeks, go for a natural look. Try using a lightly coloured bronzer for a sun-kissed touch or a light pink rosy colour to accentuate your natural glow. Lightly brush blush over the ‘apples’ of your cheeks (to find your ‘apples’, just smile) and finish with lighter coverage on the bridge of your nose and your forehead.

3

EYESHADOW AND LINER Eyeshadow can be a great way to bring out your eye colour. Select a natural shade with a bit of shimmer for an everyday look. Brown and hazel eyes look best in warmer colours like copper and gold. Blue and green eyes really stand out with grey and plum coloured shadows. You can also use eyeliner to accentuate your eyes, but the less-is-more rule also applies here. Try eyeco selection of liquid eyeliners.

4

LASHES To make your lashes look lifted, use an eyelash curler at the root of your upper lashes and hold it for five seconds. Then wiggle your mascara wand in an upward motion through the lashes. Sweep across lashes once, twice or however many times you feel looks enough. Nars audacious mascara is fantastic at thickening, lengthening and accentuating lashes.

5

LIPS For a fresh look on your lip, apply some lipgloss. It’s light and looks natural while also adding a shimmery glow. You can even use a lightly coloured lip stain

6

for a look that needs no reapplying. I’m loving Barry M’s Genie Lip shade, it’s green but magically turns your pout an ultralong lasting personal shade of pink. It does this by adapting to the Alkaline in your lips. In other words, every person is different and every look is unique! Genie lasts for eight hours. Apply the stain to your lips and wait for it to dry. You can finish the look with a clear lipgloss. Booking a make up lesson will help bring a newly found confidence to application. You can learn new tricks, address areas of your face you feel less happy with and enhance your favourite features. It takes time to create a look that works best for you, but practice makes perfect.

Below I’ve featured my favourite kits to help you on your way... Benefit Do The Bright Thing. This is a chic palette which is simple yet effective to use. It will leave you a glowing beauty at the school gates. Bare Minerals Get started kit. Perfect for foundation-wearing teenagers. This clever kit helps conceal and hide all imperfections without clogging up your pores. Smashbox Try It miniatures is a great way to get started with the essentials.

EXPLA N THE MARKET This month, Cotswold Style would like to introduce you to our new columnist, Guy Shone, who is an economist & business expert and runs the research business ExplaintheMarket.com anks are a just a bit less boring now than when I started work in the 90’s. We can bank on our mobile, research investments online – the adverts even sometimes vaguely match our real lives. Many things remain the same though, like the way economists love to claim certainty in their theory when markets become volatile. None of us likes to admit we don’t know – particularly not on television. The recent China stock market crisis has caused many people to look for reassurance in the economy and their investments but it is not all bad news. Here’s some things we do know: The recent crash is nowhere near as severe as 1987 or 2008, the Chinese economy is not a bad as it looks and importantly, the stock market isn’t always the best indicator of the health of the global economy. China accounts for a quarter of the world's economic growth, its hugely important but the Chinese economy is really changing rather than just ‘failing’. After years of big global partnerships with the world clambering to join the Chinese party, the focus is slowly shifting. Policy makers and business leaders in China are turning to things at home. The domestic economy actually looks quite healthy inside China. Retail sales are growing at 10% a year and indicators like mobile phone contracts and airline ticket sales are all increasing. Stock market volatility is likely to continue for some time but it shouldn’t cause people to panic. The stock market has always been a pretty straightforward idea but unfortunately it generates so much data and opinion, it often seems very complex. It is split into different indices - the most famous in the UK being the FTSE 100, comprising the largest 100 companies. Investing in the stock market is usually done through some kind of third-party broker or adviser but increasingly online platforms like Interactive Investor and

About Guy...

Hargreaves Lansdown are being used by people looking for share dealing services without the added expense of advice. Research now suggests women may be better at investing in volatile markets than men. Interesting when you consider the vast majority of stockbrokers are still male. Most studies show that men and women perform about the same when it comes to final financial returns but women score significantly better when it comes to risk management. Men appear to be much more prone to harming investment performance by ignoring advice. Male investors are almost six times more likely to display erratic behaviour and trade too frequently. Women are also typically better savers. Research from Fidelity Investments showed that while men save 7.9% of their salaries, women save 8.3%. A small difference that adds up to a lot of money over a lifetime. I can feel my wife and daughter nodding in agreement as I type. The evidence is that men invest more than women but when women invest they do it better. Sorry chaps! Part of the problem here is that the finance industry is still rather stuck in its ways. Financial Advisers, Banks and Wealth Managers have made some efforts to modernise but often, new technology has just been added to an old fashioned attitude producing a more efficient version of the same old story. The industry still has a long way to go. New regulations now mean independent financial advisers need to explain how they earn your money more clearly than

Guy Shone appears regularly on BBC News, BBC Breakfast, BBC World, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 5 Live and is also the former City & Business columnist for the Metro. Guy spent most of his 17 year career in the City. His previous jobs include the Head of Research for global investment group Old Mutual plc and Research Director for the government backed Money Advice Service. In 2012, he was commissioned by the UK government to produce the largest study ever done into the financial behaviour of UK families. Guy has recently moved to the Cotswolds with his wife, daughter and dog (called Lollipop).

ever before. The focus now is on earning a fee from the client rather than earning commission behind the scenes. Change is happening but an industry built on decades of earning money ‘behind the scenes’ isn’t going to easily adjust to transparency. I have worked with big investment houses, wealth management firms and even directly with the industry regulator themselves. I have seen excellent advice and bad advice; delighted clients and confused ones. My advice about advice is to test your adviser. Ask them to explain how they earn your fee and any relationships behind the scenes with investment 'platforms' and other businesses. If you are met with a grimace and the attitude that it’s ‘all too complicated to explain’ then seriously think about going to someone else. Investment products can be complicated but explaining how you've earned your pay today should not be. So ask your adviser this month and apply the grimace test. He said that spousal maintenance should only be payable if the “choices in the marriage generated hard future needs.” To decide this, he looked at the length of the time during which the wife had not worked and had looked after the children.

WESTMINSTER IN THE COTSWOLDS Emma Logan has asked the county’s MPs to inform Cotswold Style readers what they have be doing to represent their constituencies both locally and from Westminster

Neil Carmichael

NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD In the last Parliament, there was a strong campaign fighting for fairer funding of schools, led by the F40 group of English local authorities with historically low funding for education – including our own county Gloucestershire. The essential problem has been and alas, still remains, the disparity of pupil funding between different local authorities. The scale of this was illustrated in the summer in a presentation to Members of Parliament when attention was drawn to a comparison between a primary school in Chalford in Stroud, with £4914 per pupil and a primary school in Tower Hamlets where equivalent funding is £7630. The reasons for such disparities are complex but most revolve around local government funding formulae, aimed towards tackling depravation as assessed through taking a number of factors into account but often weighted in favour of urban areas. This is why a London borough like Tower Hamlets is so much 86 OCTOBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE

better funded than Gloucestershire and other rural areas. The inconsistencies in the national formula mean that schools in deprived rural areas are getting an extremely bad deal. To move towards a fairer system, the Government at the end of the last Parliament provided substantial funds of £390 million to the most deserving authorities including Gloucestershire. This will be repeated for 2015-16, but is only a short-term solution to reforming the whole of the Direct Schools Grant. The weight of argument for fundamental reform of pupil funding is now greater than ever. The F40 Group, which represents the lowest per funded authorities will keep applying pressure. The Education Select Committee will be writing to the Department of Education calling for its proposals for reform to be brought forward as soon as practical. These will require extensive consultation, as it’s important that any changes are got right and disparities finally resolved and it is my intention that at the consultation stage the Committee will fully scrutinise the proposals into how a new mechanism can be constructed. Neil Carmichael is the Member of Parliament for Stroud and Chair of the Education Select Committee. Contact Neil at neil.carmichael.mp @parliament.uk or his constituency office on 01453 751 572

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown

GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN, MP FOR COTSWOLDS This month saw a particularly sensitive and emotive issue discussed in Parliament. Rob Marris MP tabled a Private Members Bill on Assisted Dying. I wanted to explain why I voted against this bill as I appreciate and respect, that people feel strongly on both sides of the argument. Terminal illness is an issue, which I have dedicated a lot of time to. On behalf of my late constituent, Les Halpin, who died last year of Motor Neurone Disease, I have spearheaded a campaign to grant greater access to clinical trials and medicines for patients with terminal illnesses. I was delighted that the campaign appears to have succeeded with the Secretary of State for Health, the Rt. Hon Jeremy Hunt MP launching the Early Access to Medicines scheme.

Style Politics All human life is intrinsically valuable and as such I am against moves to allow assisted suicide, which is currently a criminal offence under Section 2 of the Suicide Act 1961. I believe it should be the medical profession that determines what treatment patients receive prior to death. I would not want to end up in a situation where terminally ill patients feel pressurised or convinced that they should end their lives. Everyone deserves equal protection under the criminal law. I think we should be focusing on ensuring that all terminally ill patients receive the best end of life care they possibly can. I recently saw for myself the excellent and compassionate care that the Cotswold Care Hospice provides to terminally ill patients. I think the service provided by them should be an aspiration for all organisations treating end of life patients. I also welcome the Department of Health’s End of Life Care Strategy which is intended to improve access to good quality palliative care and encourage the Government further to develop specialist palliative care and hospice provision. www.geoffreycliftonbrown.co.uk

Alex Chalk

ALEX CHALK, MP FOR CHELTENHAM The image in the Independent of the three-year old Syrian boy washed up, alone, on a European shore was incredibly harrowing. Like many here in Cheltenham, I found it difficult and painful to look at. Being the father of a three-year old myself did not make it any easier. I have personally read many powerful and poignant emails from Cheltonians on this issue. I said from the outset, my guiding principle is that our country

must act with scrupulous humanity. It is the British way and it means doing our duty by those who are fleeing violence and persecution. One of the things which I believe makes our country great, is our proud history of offering help to those who need our protection. That’s why I believe it was right to take our share of refugees. We couldn’t simply have walked on by. The question of how many is very difficult. But as to whether we should have gone further I would merely offer the following reflections. First, the grim truth is that none of the figures bandied about could ever meet the need. Eleven million people have been displaced from Syria alone. That’s before you even think about the people of Libya. This is a crisis on an epic scale. Sadly, it is beyond our country alone to solve. Second, it is not just Syrians of course who are in need. That poor young boy could just as easily have been Libyan or Afghan. Should they be treated less kindly? Of course not and the truth is therefore that there may be future appeals for our help and in case we’d forgotten, the state of Iraq is hanging by a thread. Just think what could happen if that country disintegrates and thousands flee. Third, I think we can take real pride in the extraordinary efforts our country is making in the Middle East away from the TV cameras. For months Britain has stood head and shoulders above our European partners in providing aid to the border camps, where the majority of displaced Syrians are. Just three per cent have embarked on the perilous journey to Europe. Britain has helped those who stayed behind, giving £900m to keep alive hundreds of thousands who are too weak to travel or determined to stay and rebuild their country. The French have provided less than £100m. Finally, we meet our promises to those in need. We are the only country in the G8 to

have delivered on its commitment to spend 0.7 per cent of GDP on international aid. Whilst other countries talked a good game at the Gleneagles summit in 2005, only Britain followed through. Not France. Not Germany. Not Japan. We have led the world on this. So whilst this is an immensely difficult situation and no response is perfect, I believe our country is showing its heart. It is using its head too. www.alexchalk.com

LAURENCE ROBERTSON, MP FOR TEWKESBURY Strange things sometimes happen in Parliament during the long summer and the Conference weeks are often referred to as the “silly season”. However, the strangest event of all took place in between the two when the Labour Party elected Jeremy Corbyn as its leader in September. It’s yet to be seen how the election of a career-long backbencher (nothing wrong with that in itself), who has been so far out of mainstream thinking on so many issues (again, nothing wrong with that, depending on the issues), will play with the electorate. Already, the man who was going to introduce a new style of politics has backtracked on a number of his core beliefs, so perhaps as in George Orwell’s Animal Farm where the pigs and the humans became indistinguishable, Mr Corbyn will turn out to be an establishment figure after all! Locally, I am continuing to visit individuals and local organisations, and will take the issues, which everyone raises with me back to Parliament when we sit again on 12th October – at the end of what this year will have been a very silly season indeed! www.laurencerobertsonmp.com COTSWOLD STYLE OCTOBER 2015 87

Part-time superhero encourages leading Gloucestershire recruiters to push themselves to the limits

A group of top recruitment experts were last night encouraged to push themselves to their physical and emotional limits during a talk by the vivacious explorer, Jamie McDonald. McDonald – who famously ran 5,000 miles across Canada from coast to coast all by himself-was the guest of honour at Ambrose Recruitment’s first birthday party at The Daffodil. He entertained over 40 staff and clients from the Cheltenham-based recruitment firm as he divulged his life story as an adventurer, fundraiser, speaker and part-time superhero. “We wanted to do something a little different, and with Jamie – a self confessed part-time super hero – we certainly got that,” said Director Robert Dove, from Ambrose Recruitment.

“It sounds like a cliché but he was one of the most inspiring speakers I have ever heard. His tales of exploration are Forrest Gumpesque. Coupled with his passion and commitment to fundraising, he is one in a million. He made many people in that room last night sit up and take note of their own lives, realizing what is important and trying to identity how to achieve one’s own ambitions.” Ambrose Recruitment, based in Cheltenham’s Ambrose Street, specializes in recruiting professionals for roles in engineering, technical and supply chain positions. Founded 12 months ago, the business has gone from strength to strength. In what has been a whirlwind year, Ambrose Recruitment has successfully placed hundreds of professionals into jobs within the

engineering sector and related industries, working with many leading global businesses including Gloucestershire-based PKL, Corin Group, ASSA ABLOY, Kohler Mira and SAPA Profiles. Robert added: “It’s been a wonderful first 12 months, whereby we have exceeded our initial targets and are continuing by the day to build an impressive portfolio of clients throughout the whole of the UK. By continuing to focus on the first rate service we offer to both clients and candidates alike, the aim is to have significantly grown our business base by the time our second birthday comes around”. www.ambroserecruitment.co.uk info@ambroserecruitment.co.uk Tel: 01242 505417

Financial Surgery Robert Ward is here every month to guide you through your financial questions

Q. Dear Robert, I’ve just had power of attorney given to me over my mother’s accounts, who is now living in a nursing home. Can you help me understand the best way I can manage her finances to preserve as much of her money as possible? She owns her £280k house, has about £30k savings and various share schemes. Belinda, Worcester

Dear Belinda, It is good to see that you have taken a power of attorney over your mother’s affairs it is a very useful way forward when unfortunately our loved ones have to go into care. I have two questions that I would have liked you to have clarified, the first is what type of power do you have - is it just to deal with the financials? Or do you hold both parts which enables you to deal with the physical care of your mother? These two elements need to operate together when care is involved. The second is that as you say that she has some share schemes. I would want to know what was involved, for example, were they from an old employer who she worked with and therefore both saved for and became entitled to shares at prices that may have been advantageous at the time? The last point that I want to cover off before I comment is that you refer to the home as a Nursing Home not a Care Home. A Nursing Home implies that around the clock nursing care is on hand, where as a Care Home indicates hotel costs with nurses over viewing her daily condition. The first is very much more expensive than the second but also is indicative of ill health with life expectancy usually very much shortened. I note that you have to hand circa £30k, plus one assumes any pension income and ancillary income, such as attendance allowance. I tend to put to one side a years’ costs, less the pension and ancillary income, as this will be

If you would like to ask Robert a question please email info@bankhousegroup.co.uk

needed immediately and can only benefit from current a/c interest. The balance can be used to do a cash ISA in the knowledge that you will need it next year. The major asset is the house about which you can do little, apart from let it deliver income. You may be able to get a few years rent from it together with the pension income, but it all depends upon the cost of the care. The reality is that you need to sit down with a specialist to put all of these numbers into a realistic plan which will determine when the house has to be sold if at all. Many IFA’s have a long term care qualification and can advise carefully on this subject. Q. Dear Robert, Is there such a thing as a joint pension? We both have individual work pensions at the moment, is there a better way to save for our future together? Francesca, Leamington Spa

Dear Francesca, Thank you for asking what is a very sensible and straightforward question. “Is there such a thing as a joint pension?”

It is what I would describe as an egg box question. The answer is simply no but that is confusing because of a lot of jargon in the industry. We are very good at Jargon but not very good at explaining or simplifying things. Back to the egg box. When you buy your dozen large beautiful blue eggs from a supermarket or farm shop you get 12 eggs all sat in their own individual space, they are all separate even though they have arrived together. They probably all came from different hens even though they look the same. Your pension is the same. You can be in your own scheme or policy in the same way that you can be in a company sponsored scheme - branded the same, but each person is treated separately. Today many schemes are under auto enrolment where you will be contributing alongside your colleagues and employers, they all look the same but are in fact entirely separate. There are some complicated types of schemes where by people band together to something, such as buy their office building, so that they pay the rent to their schemes, but even these that look and act in unison with others are actually totally separate. It is one of the only simple principles of pensions. Bank House Group, 125 The Promenade, Cheltenham, Glos. GL50 1NW. Call 01242 520074 or email info@bankhousegroup.co.uk. Winning Match Tea Shelle Duffin provides the perfect sausage roll after a hard game of rugby roll is the flavour in the sausage meat, so even Mary Berry wouldn’t strike you down on this occasion for using shopbought pastry but in doing so means there’s definitely no excuses for any ‘soggy bottoms’. So, I’ve taken the cheese and pickle sandwich and a hearty sausage roll, each earning a culinary peerage in their own right and put them together in holy matrimony to create a little bite of heaven. This is one match tea, which even if you have the misfortune of being on the losing team, a bite on one of these and everyone’s a winner! >>>

ith the Rugby World Cup now in full swing, all eyes are on the pitch whether you’re lucky enough to be watching from the sidelines or from the comfort of your sofa at home, or even playing in a game yourself. All the excitement surrounding this much-loved sport is enough to generate a hearty hunger for a good feed, the moment the final whistle is blown. A post-match tea is always an indulgent affair - sandwiches, cakes, pastries, even the odd hotdog or burger has managed to find its way off the pitch. However, as much as I and I’m sure many of you

enjoy a good juicy burger, I’m also a lover of great culinary traditions. For example, you can’t go wrong with a simple cheese and pickle sandwich and a sausage roll or two, or several, as most cases would have it! Once the taste of a freshly baked sausage roll hits your lips, the shop bought ones will be nothing more than a distant memory you will never look back on. The smell of a fresh batch straight from the oven is enough to send your tastebuds into a state of culinary ecstasy and the sound of rumbling bellies from then until the first bite can be heard in timbucktoo. The secret to a good sausage

Makes 24 (generous mouthful-or-two-sized rolls)

Cheese and Pickle Sausage Rolls

W

This is a winning recipe that’s easy to make and takes no time at all to whip together before the big game. You can even make life super simple and buy the pastry already rolled - who’s judging! These are delicious served both warm or cold and whether you’re in front of the big screen or out on the sidelines.

Ingredients: 12 Cumberland sausages (roughly 800g) 150g breadcrumbs 1 jar Branston Pickle (small chunk version) 200g strong cheddar cut in small cubes Handful of fresh thyme leaves 800g puff pastry sheets 1 egg, beaten Salt and pepper

Method: • Preheat the oven to 180°C. • Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. • Mix the sausage meat, breadcrumbs and thyme together in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. • Stir in the cheese chunks and mix until they are all nicely embedded and equally distributed within the mixture. • Sprinkle a little flour over a smooth service and lay out the puff pastry sheets. Cut each one lengthways down the

middle leaving you with long, even rectangular pieces. • Spread a thin, even layer of Branston Pickle along each pastry rectangle, leaving the edges clear. • On a separate board, divide the sausage meat mixture into equal portions for each rectangle and mould each one into a sausage shape. • Place each sausage on the middle of the pastry rectangles and gently fold one side of the pastry over to enclose the filling. • Using your fingers, seal the edges and to

make them look that little bit more impressive, use a fork to press down and pattern the edges at the same time. • Brush the pastry with the beaten eggs and cut each one into mouth-sized pieces, or alternatively, the sizes you want. • Space them out evenly on the baking tray and bake in the oven for 25 minutes until the pastry is puffed, golden and cooked through. • Simply serve with the much-loved tomato ketchup or brown sauce for dipping.

Unbelievable! Sandra Paul urges us to keep Cotswold cows in their rightful fields have to talk about the Labour leadership election because I am still chuckling. It really is unbelievable! I want to see a credible opposition because it makes for a healthier Parliamentary process but electing a nice man who doesn’t stand a chance of leading Labour to an election victory is just nuts. Yes, it is rather wonderful that Jeremy Corbyn has engaged the youth back into politics and encourages them to dream that they can make a difference. But to the rest of us who are working and paying taxes, the prospect of having a far left Government in power putting a cap on earnings, renationalising utilities and pumping borrowed money into the UK, thereby taking us further into debt, is simply a nightmare scenario. The UK is becoming more and more polarized and Corbyn’s election has thrown this well and truly into the spotlight.

I

Also in the spotlight is milk. As regular readers of this column will know, I recently wrote about the badger cull debate and in particular, how farmers were being affected because of a boycott of their milk - if it came from the affected areas. It’s an emotional issue and a complex one. Living in the Cotswolds, we can’t really ignore the issue. Indeed, I pointed out that Cheltenham’s branch of Caffe Nero was boycotting milk from our region. Instead, their supplier, Cotteswold Dairy, is supplying the chain with Welsh milk in order to get

“Supermarkets use milk as a loss leader – so they are not making any money on the milk itself but research shows that shoppers never pop into supermarkets for just a pint of milk” around the issue. So rather than be supplied with milk from around the corner, Caffe Nero’s carbon footprint leaves a larger dent because they reacted – in my view – in a knee-jerk manner. Farmers themselves have been targeted but it is not the farmers’ fault there is a problem with badgers. I don’t believe the general public realizes how hard it is to be a farmer and that any boycott threatens their livelihoods. Some farmers are housing cows inside and not allowing their herd to graze outside because of possible TB. What has it come to that our green grazing fields are empty because of the threat posed by badgers, it’s just unbelievable? Cotteswold Dairy supplies my milk. I am happy to pay a little bit more for my pint of milk purely because they deliver to my door and it forms part of my love affair with the Cotswolds. You might not think this is a big deal but I assure you, in most areas of the UK, the doorstep milk delivery is a thing of the past. Cotteswold Dairy pay their farmers over and above the rate paid by the supermarkets but this is because they know their customers will pay more for it. The Cotteswold Dairy’s processing

site is based in Tewkesbury and the farmers that form their co-operative are within a 30miles radius. Their milk is Red Tractor accredited and basically, it ticks all the boxes for me as a consumer. But over and above this, they remain an independent dairy. They have never supplied major retailers and it’s not on their spectrum. In their words, ‘you can’t produce quality milk and survive for the price the supermarkets are willing to pay’. Supermarkets use milk as a loss leader – so they are not making any money on the milk itself but research shows that shoppers never pop into supermarkets for just a pint of milk. They can afford to reduce the price of their milk but I want to be assured of what I’m drinking and where it came from. We need the public to think about buying British, buying local where possible and making sure our beautiful British countryside has cows in the fields. Style Review

R&R A monthly column exploring the perfect location to clear your head and spend quality time with the ‘lovely one’ in your life This month Emeline Watchorn reviews The Falcon Hotel, Painswick Despite having moved to the Cotswolds from London in 2009, I regard myself as a newbie and can still have a child-like reaction of delight to all that it offers. So when I got the request to review The Falcon in Painswick, I felt the familiar tingle of excitement at the prospect of spending a night away in this gem of a Cotswold village. I am pleased to say, it didn’t disappoint! Painswick straddles the A46, the route joining Stroud and Cheltenham and is perched hillside in a truly pretty country setting. Aptly named ‘The Queen of the Cotswolds’ Painswick is a labyrinth of narrow windy streets packed full of gorgeous listed buildings. The Falcon is a Georgian flat fronted handsome hotel that sits on the main road so is pretty straightforward to find. Consisting of 11 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, this family run hotel has a cosy, unpretentious feel that makes you feel instantly welcome. Behind the hotel are some pretty outbuildings that have been converted into a fabulous little interiors shop called ‘Meggie’s’ and larger converted stables called The Shires that can be hired for events. First impressions were therefore good and the mood was set for an enjoyable stay. We arrived early evening on a Wednesday to see a full bar and restaurant which was a good sign as it was at the tail end of the tourist season and the children were already back at school. We asked whether the diners were still tourists or locals and were told in September it was a mixture of both. Obviously these heavenly Cotswold villages attract a great deal of tourism and being on The Cotswold Way, it also attracts walkers. So in my mind it was reassuring to see that the locals were also choosing The Falcon. We were shown to our room on the top floor at the front of the building, overlooking St. Mary’s Church with its famous 99 clipped yew trees. The building dates back to 1554 and is full of character, which I am pleased to say, has

been kept with the sympathetic but not dated interiors. The look was fresh and neutral and full of little quirky details such as binoculars left on the seat pad in the window (should we want to count the yew trees). We headed to the bar and were delighted to see a Gin menu propped up. It’s a modern concept that ordering a gin and tonic has now become a complicated decision making process involving 9 or so different choices but it shows the hotel is on the ball and catering to a market that expects exciting gins as well as looking after their older market of tourists and walkers. The barman explained to me that they have plenty of wedding parties, mostly from London staying over the summer, hence the up to date touches. Dinner was a candlelit and pleasant experience. I ordered from the Special’s board and had a goat’s cheese and pepper salad as a starter and a lobster and crab dish for main served with salad and chips. My less adventurous husband ordered from the main menu and had chorizo and scallops followed by chicken kiev. The food was delicious and had a gastropub feel to it rather than a formal high dining experience and the service was attentive without being invasive. So much of a food experience to me can be affected by the atmosphere and here they had created a lovely one that in combination with the food and wine

meant the conversation flowed and we felt warm and at home. A good night’s sleep in the seriously comfortable bed was followed by a delicious breakfast. I had time to explore the interior’s shop Meggie’s that turned out to be the brainchild of the proprietor’s daughter Meg and was packed full of goodies all of which stylistically complemented the shabby chic look of the hotel. Husband and I both agreed that The Falcon made a lovely country retreat that was comfortable and inviting with the added benefit of being in an elegant Georgian building and a stunning village setting. With room prices starting at £69 for a double, it is also really good value. It was a restorative stay and I’m sure will always remain popular with the tourists, walkers, locals and the odd ex-Londoners like us! Lucy Garbutt took her sons on an oriental, culinary experience ne of the most treasured and unifying motherly experiences this summer was to share an oriental cooking experience with my children at ChenMoore Chopsticks. My boys aged 11 and 13 and a chatty 14 year old friend are very lively and I was slightly nervous as to how the gang would manage to concentrate from 10am to 3pm without starting a food fight or worse! Not one scrap of humiliating behaviour surfaced as they were all entirely mesmerised and captivated by Pamela Chen Moore from the onset. Pamela is a beautiful pocket rocket of dynamite, energy and enthusiasm with a passion to bring people together with good, healthy food. The boys’ attention was immediately grabbed by Pamela’s homemade feast of divine chocolate biscotti and lemon drizzle cake. Pamela’s introductory talk about the versatility of oriental cooking in terms of cost, time and special dietary requirements was fully absorbed along with the great wedges of cake that were consumed. The ‘Bare Necessity’ course is an introduction to oriental cuisine with Pamela ingeniously guiding us through

O

the basics with some practical hands-on experience. We all learnt how to cook using the most common items found in ones kitchens, together with the basics of an ‘oriental shelf ’, combined with Pamela preparing a selection of fabulous recipes for us to enjoy over lunch. We received tuition on cutting skills and multiple ways to chop carrots, spring onions and ginger and how to organise the preparation of food and flavours. Finally we sat down to a banquet of Seaweed and Silken Torfu for a starter,

followed by Poached Salmon oriental style, Stir Fried French Beans with mushroom and garlic, Egg and Tomato stir fry and a Cabbage and Carrot salad (which non-salad eating Harry wrote in his take home recipe book, ‘BEST SALAD EVER’). We even took away food boxes to enjoy at home! Following our oriental cooking course the boys produced the very same feast for my husband and I to celebrate our recent wedding anniversary. Neither of us assisted in any way at all and the meal was absolutely delicious, unique and better than anything you could buy in a restaurant. The ‘Bare Necessity’ course is the best value for money, activity and memorable life experience any parent could hope to give their child or for friends and family to enjoy together (I’m thinking Christmas presents!). We’ve earmarked the Dimsum Dimsum course next! Apart from teaching from her kitchen at home, Pamela also cooks on live shows and teaches at prestigious cookery schools as the guest chef. Pamela provides demonstration and sampling sessions for schools for cross-curricular themed events, equipping students with basic cookery skills in preparation for independent living. Pamela also runs these sessions for companies as part of their staff wellness programme, team building, office socials and corporate entertainment. Pamela’s ambition is to eventually work with under-privileged communities to give them the basic knowledge and skills to shop, cook and eat healthily. The long-term effects of this will be closer family bonds and better eating habits and health. Watch this space for Pamela’s first recipe book highlighting how to cook attractive, tasty and trouble-free oriental dishes. Style Fitness

THE Super Shake... Cotswold Style’s Fitness Expert Luciano Kydd, is whipping up new, healthy recipes orget about juicing, here is a smoothie ‘The Super Shake’ that will rock your world and give you health benefits far superior than juicing on its own. It combines high-quality protein, fibre, healthy fats, antioxidants and more, in a tasty formula that ensures lean muscle mass, fat loss and a healthy snack or as a meal replacement in some cases for the time-poor individual. Compared to most energy drinks or shakes on the market that are full of highfructose, trans fat or low grade protein, a good way to indulge in some extra protein and calories, when you’re trying to build lean muscle mass and lose fat/weight loss, is by consuming high quality ingredients. The great thing is, that you’re in control of what goes into your shake. So, how do you make a Super Shake? OK, so let’s assume you have a blender and it’s powerful enough to do the job and now all you have to do is follow some step-by-step instructions for creating awesome Super Shakes. For optimal mixing, flavour and consistency, follow the steps in order. Mix and Match, as you like, adjusting portions of each ingredient to build yourself an 8 to 12-ounce Super Shake. And if you discover any new fantastic combinations, don’t be afraid to share them, it’s always great to get feedback at info@kyddfitness.co.uk

F

STEP 1: Start with ice - Use 1 to 4 cubes for a thin, chilled shake. Use 5 to 10 cubes for a thicker, pudding-like consistency shake. STEP 2: Pick a fruit - Apple, orange, banana, pineapple, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry etc — any kind will work. If you like a thick shake, go with frozen over fresh. Add ½ cup for a smaller shake and up to 1 cup for a larger portion; adding fruits along with some vegetables will count for your carbohydrate portion of the shake. STEP 3: Throw in a veggie - I know it may sound gross to put veggies in a shake but if you use the right ones, you’ll barely taste them. Plus, you get the added benefit of extra nutrients. My favourites are spinach, kale, celery, powdered greens and

beetroot. Adding ¼ -½ cup of veggies provides a good nutrient boost, without adding a veggie after-taste or too much volume to your shake. You can also use frozen veggies if don’t like fresh ones, either way is ok. You may not be a fan of eating veggies but do include them, as they are needed to complete the Super Shake. STEP 4: Scoop some protein - Here are two different UK produced brands I think you will like, plus I use them myself on a regular basis as they are of high quality and don’t contain bulking agents rubbish inside. ‘Genetics’ is a supplement made from dairy although they have a plant version and the ‘Sunwarrior’ brand is made from plants and can be purchased at most whole food markets or via the internet. Unfortunately, not all protein powders are created equal. The supplement industry can be a shady place. Largely unregulated, consumers are stuck being their own experts for what they should and shouldn’t buy. STEP 5: Select a nut or seed - Aim for 2 to 4 tbsp of nuts/seeds per shake, which will cover your fat intake, meaning you will be getting all your macronutrients in one place. Eg: walnuts, cashews, almonds, etc or any kind of nut butter, flax, hemp, chia seeds. STEP 6: Pour in some liquid - How much depends on how thick or thin you want it. If you have a weak blender, more liquid makes it easier to blend. Water, chilled green tea, almond (unsweetened), or coconut milk. Whatever your liquid of choice, somewhere around a cup will get you in the ballpark. STEP 7: Choose your side - This step is optional but it nicely finishes off any shake. With these toppers, a dash will do your taste buds well. Dark chocolate, ground coffee beans, coconut, oats, cinnamon, vanilla extract, organic chlorella (good for helping with detox), organic spirulina (good for helping with detox and added protein)

Here’s a tasty and simple Super Shake example from me:

Chocolate Peanut Butter Shake • 1 cup of almond milk (unsweetened) • 2 scoops chocolate flavoured protein powder • 2 tbsp natural peanut butter • 1 tbsp ground flax seeds • 1 tbsp raw, mixed nuts • ½ cup fresh celery • ½ banana If the flavours in this recipe aren't your thing, use the ingredient amounts as a guideline to create your own Super Shake. Blend up the shake in the morning to drink throughout the day as a snack, or have before leaving the house if don’t have time for a proper breakfast. It can also be consumed before or after your workout session, during mid-evening if you need a snack or after coming home and have nothing in your fridge. There are some who like to take a view on next year’s festival and secure rather large prices on horses they can follow through the winter. More of that anon, first an update on how the refurb at Cheltenham goes. Cheltenham Racecourse is nearing the end of a £45million redevelopment project and one new feature that will be in use for the meeting is the crescent walkway, which has been installed over the summer. The walkway will attach the ‘See You Then Terrace’ to the new grandstand, which is to open later in the autumn and will include viewing steps around the Winners Enclosure from which racegoers can enjoy watching the victorious horses and their connections celebrate wining at the Home of Jump Racing. Racing actually returns to Cheltenham Racecourse with The Showcase on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October, 2015. To get the season back in full swing, the leading Jump trainers, jockeys and owners will return for two days of action. There will be seven races each day for racegoers to enjoy as well as the

Showcase Food and Drink Zone, which returns to Cheltenham for the second year. This is a great innovation and verges on a mini food and drink festival. Looking ahead to next March and the opening Tuesday, favourite for the Champion Hurdle is last year’s hugely impressive winner, Faugheen. At around evens this represents absolutely no value and an awful lot can happen between now and next March. The Supreme Novices is the opening race and evolves as the season progresses as horses make their bows, impressive or otherwise. Early favourites were involved in the finish of the Cheltenham Bumper, David Pipe’s Moon Racer and the third Modus, trading around 10/1. Willie Mullins’s early candidate is Bachasson who won recently at Galway. Annie Power is an early 6/4 favourite for the Mares Hurdle, who saved bookmakers literally millions when she fell at the last, in this race last year ending the Willie Mullins accumulator that was mounting after Douvan, Un de Sceaux and Faugheen had already gone in. Douvan the winner of the Supreme Novices that day is as short as 11/4 for next year’s Arkle. Wednesday’s Champion Chase is many peoples idea of the race of the meeting and was won by Dodging Bullets back in March. He is 5/1 to

repeat that but the mightily impressive Un De Sceaux is 5/4 , again ridiculously short at this stage. Annie Power has also been installed as favourite for the World Hurdle underpinning my contention that she doesn’t really have an ideal distance. Cole Harden was a worthy, albeit unfashionable winner in the last running and at 20/1 warrants a small each way bet. The Gold Cup has Willie Mullins’s Vautor as favourite, again far too short for a novice. Current champion Coneygree is 6/1 but I quite like Uxizandre at 40/1. Very good news from the Cotswold’s smallest but largest flat trainer, John Gallagher, whom we recently featured. At the time of writing, 18 horses have run so far this year notching up 14 winners with Majestic Moon winning nicely at Ascot and en route for the Ayr Gold Cup. Only two of their horses have not picked up any prize money. I shall be back to preview the Paddy Power and the first big meeting of the year at Cheltenham in November. Toodle Pip ! Claire in the County RUGBY – It’s not just for the boys laments Claire Thayers um I love watching the rugby – I like a good fight and the thighs.” In truth, I can’t really argue with my 18-year-old daughter… in fact it made me stop and think about why I love watching. Is it the power of the scrum, the ball handling skills, the accuracy of the kicking? No, I think it must be the same adrenalin rush that the Romans gained from watching their gladiators fighting! Awful to own up to but watching two well matched sides, battling for 80 minutes is gripping, there is no other sport like it. For teenage girls, I think it is all about working out which player is the best looking, with the broadest shoulders, the most muscly thighs and biggest biceps – and if they can play rugby, then that’s just a bonus. Scrabbling around for the programme, finding the head and shoulder shots (ie. sorting out the talent), is all so important before kick off. Then there is standing down at the sideline watching the warm up which is a must. Oh to slip under a player doing a press up... Shimmying under a scrum or becoming the physio, who with a magic

“M

sponge runs on in the middle of the game to administer instant pain relief for cramping thighs and groin strain or just eagerly awaiting the exchange of rugby shirts at the end of the match; teenage imaginations can run riot (and you thought it was me in fantasy land).

“For teenage girls, I think it is all about working out which player is the best looking, with the broadest shoulders, the most muscly thighs and biggest biceps – and if they can play rugby, then that’s just a bonus.” I have to say it really isn’t difficult how we can instantly tell the difference between a rugby player and football player, off the field and it is not just about their size. It’s the amount of hair gel that’s been used and fake tan that’s been applied VS the wonky crooked nose and an ear that wouldn’t be noticed if it made a sudden appearance in a cheese sauce (guaranteed there’d be no

earring attached to it either!). So with the Rugby World Cup upon us, take the time to study the difference in the nations. Having recently watched Georgia vs Japan at Kingsholm, my daughter and I felt most disappointed not only because we didn’t know who to shout for but there was also a serious lack of talent. For me the South Africans always turn out a hunky looking bunch and those All Blacks scrub up well – but brawn aside, I will be watching every game because I love it so and with the best of them, will be singing ‘Swing Low’ at the top of my voice. Even if you don’t follow rugby, do watch the World Cup, not just because it is an amazing spectacle and the fact that it is here in the UK as well as in the Cotswolds and not only for the rugby skills but as a bonding exercise with your children. Just take the time, sit next to your teenage daughter and connect over the admiration of the toned torsos and tree trunk thighs and if there are fall outs and handbags for you both to scream at – all the better! The Cotswold Gent Heads off for a good bout of sing song m I alone in thinking that this year and indeed generally recently, we seem to be invited to get excited by evermoreimportant sporting spectaculars? This year (and I am sure I may miss a few here), the media gods have implored us to consider the epic battles within the Women’s Football World Cup, the Rugby World Cup, the World Athletics championships, the European Hockey championships, the Ashes (obviously not a world event but nevertheless apparently of critical importance to our collective national self esteem), various diamond leagues and equestrian Rolex championships - the list appears endless. Am I about to experience epic sport overload, just at the time that the only true Gents sport (well excluding cricket and shooting) rolls into town? It seems to me that this event - now much hyped and sadly ever more commercialised has been driven into our collective consciousness for ages now. Relentless marketing and promotion selling us ‘packages’ of entertainment - usually to include a match ticket, a vastly over priced and indifferent meal accompanied by ‘fine wines’ (although goodness knows whose palate was hijacked to legitimise that sobriquet) and some washed up decrepit ‘legend’ of the sport - for an obscene amount of money - seems the way forward. I am sorry to appear to be a

A

curmudgeonly old sod about this but it is a teensy bit irritating! Worse than the naked attempts at theft by miss-selling however, is the complete takeover of cracking songs and tunes that historically have risen from the spectators’ deep emotions as the drama on the pitch unfolds. Blake and Parry would be certainly spinning in their graves if they were aware of the now relentless adoption of Jerusalem at every conceivable England related match fixture, belted out by over amped, frequently very average, singers of moderate ability. It is a becoming a rather hackneyed and depressing part of revving up the crowd. As I gaze out of my study window whilst writing this, looking across the top of the Severn estuary towards Wales (admittedly a dark and somewhat scary place), visits to the old Arms Park in Cardiff spring to mind, where completely unprompted and hyped, the deeply stirring sound of a Welsh rugby crowd in full voice would occasionally echo around the park. My last visit to a Rugby World Cup was to watch the French play the Australians some years ago now at the Millennium Stadium. “Allez les bleus” I found myself singing, along with a somewhat cheeky version of the Marseillaise involving a Frenchman’s ablutions! Highly unlikely I know but really no Englishman will ever support an

Australian (except in trying to get a ticket back to Oz). Singing songs at rugby was fun unscripted, passionate and deeply traditional. The famous low - swinging sweet chariot beloved of England Fans was frequently suggested by the Scots to be inserted somewhat uncomfortably where the sun didn’t shine! Now we are handed chorus sheets and words so that the ‘effect mikes’ will not pick up any ungentlemanly but highly amusing interpretations of old classics. All I can say is (somewhat surprisingly here because he is Australian and a cricketer), thank goodness for Mitchell Johnson the Aussie swing bowler and star of a famous song, which even the cricket behaviour police have been unable to drown out! This Rugby World Cup, the great Kingsholm Stadium down the hill in Gloucester is rightfully playing host to a number of matches. Tonga, Japan, Argentina and even a tiny little country called Scotland, will be showcasing their sporting talents in this great county. Let’s hope that their fans have managed to smuggle in their own tunes past the media scripted, music police and that we will hear Tongans and Scots in full cry. Let’s also hope that we may also revisit the old favourites involving incontinent Frenchmen, large Welsh fish and something to do with General Galtieri. I am not sure what the Japanese sing - but let’s hope it’s a cracker! Now bring me my bow of burning gold... COTSWOLD STYLE OCTOBER 2015 121

This Month with Kate Justice

The Million Dollar Rider Kate Justice witnessed history at the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping ometimes, you can be lucky enough to witness history unfolding before your eyes. Good or bad, seeing and experiencing huge dramatic moments or events that will be talked about for decades to come can be enormously emotional and overwhelming. Sport is one platform where this does tend to happen. I was in Calgary, Canada last month for the Spruce Meadows 'Masters'... one of the biggest and most prestigious show jumping competitions in the world. (No, I wasn't riding.) The venue is incredible - and also has a beautiful story behind it. Spruce Meadows is Disneyland for horse lovers. The 'Southern' family set it up as an equestrian sporting venue 40 years ago its grown and expanded, yet it still feels like they're having us all over to their place for a horse show. How they manage to blend the relaxed, friendly atmosphere with world-class international sport and a multi million dollar prize fund, I do not know but somehow that's exactly what they achieve. The main competition and show highlight at the Masters, is the CP International Grand Prix, presented by Rolex. It's the second in the calendar of the three equestrian Majors that makes up the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. The first is in early summer, Aachen in Germany and the third is just before Christmas, Geneva in Switzerland. These are all massive contests that only the most brilliant horses and riders can win. But if you're exceptionally brilliant and … well, quite frankly, living legend material, then maybe you can win all three in a row and take the Rolex Grand Slam – oh and the million euro bonus prize. That ought to pay for a few bales of hay and a shiny new horse lorry! When the series was launched in 2013, there was much speculation around whether or not it would ever be done but astoundingly, this fantastically prestigious and lucrative prize has now been claimed. By a Brit. Scott Brash, riding Hello Sanctos won the Grand Prix in Geneva in 2014 and

S

122 OCTOBER 2015 COTSWOLD STYLE

followed that up with a consecutive victory in Germany the following spring. That in itself is considered an incredible feat. Can you imagine the breakfast table discussions in the Brash household after that? To do all three back to back...? An immeasurable challenge but with enormous reward. Rightly so, Scott and his team then did everything they could to prepare for Spruce Meadows and have Sanctos the horse in peak condition at precisely the right time. It paid off. On the day itself, Scott was the last rider into the ring, knowing he had to have a clear round inside the time to win the most valuable prize in the sport - and go down in history. I cannot even begin to imagine the pressure he must have felt, cantering up to the first fence. I was in tears just watching.

When he cleared the last fence, the stadium erupted.... and history was made. Scott Brash has been the world’s number 1 show jumper for almost two years; he's an Olympic Gold Medalist and now the first rider ever to win the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. I didn't ask him what he was going to do with the money and he is such a legend now, that it's practically irrelevant. What's nice... is that he seems to care more about the horse than the cash AND in true sporting legend style, he's looking ahead to the next Major (Geneva) – with victory on his mind. If you would like to share your stories with Kate Justice, please email the Editor at editor@stylemagazines.co.uk
