editor’s foreword
Welcome to our April issue! Summer is not far away now and I, personally, could not be happier. With this in mind, we have a fresh, Spring-filled issue that we hope will provide you with endless inspiration and be your perfect companion while you eat your chocolate Easter eggs! I simply adore fashion and so I’m particularly excited to share with you a stunning fashion shoot that took place at the stylish, Cotswold88 Hotel in Painswick (page 56). Working closely with Ted Baker, our photographer, Stefanie and our stylists, Lisa and Serena, have pulled together the ultimate spring/summer 2014, ‘Pastels’ trend perfectly. I’m sure you will agree that it’s beyond beautiful. If you head over to our website, you will be able to view the photo-shoot in its entirity, together with exclusive behind-thescenes gossip. We’re also proud to showcase a fashion shoot that took place at Rush Skate Park; the only indoor skatepark in Europe (page 72). Our model, Wallis Day who was in featured in Hollyoaks and is from Gloucestershire, is in fact making her way to Los Angeles to start work in Hollywood! So, we are delighted that she is our cover model. As part of our focus on the Cotswolds, we are taking a closer look at what is described as the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’; Broadway (page 40). The quintessential English village is somewhere where people travel from afar to visit. So we felt it necessary to find out a little bit more about the people who live and work there. Another new feature to Cotswold Style is ‘Travel Style’ (page 65). Our first visit overseas is the spectacular Indochina; which forms part of the former French colonies of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Our travel writer, Lucy Garbutt, notes “The trek was a most peaceful, spiritual and rejuvenating experience; the benefits of which I still feel today”. How wonderful does that sound? It makes me want to reach for my passport, immediately. I do hope you enjoy this issue, and hope that you all have a gorgeous Easter (with lots of Easter Eggs, of course!). Don’t forget to enter our competition for a free membership to Fitness First – I love this gym and know you will, too. See you next month! Phil made a conscientious decision in February 2013 , to set up on his own and join forces with Gordon Wigginton, whom he had met when Gordon was on the main board of the Grosvenor Hotel Company and Gordon’s son in law Nick Allen who spent 9 years with the world renowned Dorchester collection. Between them they have 90 years of experience and share a huge passion for food and wine. Guests were treated to Spanish tapas and sherry on arrival and ushered into the rustic dining room for a sumptous Spanish themed tasting menu. Local Trainer Kim Bailey entertained diners with a post lunch summary of his tips for the 2014 Cheltenham festival. Foodies who enjoy a trip out into the country this is a must visit venue which is developing a great reputation for excellent Food Drink and friendly hospitality.

“I work continuously, but I love it” Natalie Letch caught up with artist, Wendy Thompson, the creator behind ‘Cheltenham In Art”. Cast your minds back to December. You may recall a week back, where Eagle Tower (you know the building; the big, concrete tower block in Cheltenham) was transformed by having its grey exterior lit up through a spectacle of art, business logos and colour; a far cry from its usual appearance. I had the pleasure of meeting the artist behind, what was named, ‘Cheltenham In Art’, Wendy Thompson. “We've had a lot of response from the Cheltenham in Art, especially with the press and social media.” Promoting art through a new medium, in this case, digital, meant that art could be exposed to whoever drove or walked past the Tower. The market response propelled Wendy Thompson’s into the spotlight and she has since had a variety of exhibitions, most notably at the Wilson Café. I soon realised that Wendy is a multi-tasker who can turn her hand to anything; drawing to painting, sculpture to digital art and was even commissioned by the Prince of Wales and Camilla. ‘Cheltenham In Art’, proved to be an immense task for Wendy and her business partner, Paul. Nevertheless, it was worthwhile in the end. Wendy added, “Where we came from in a short space of time was really surprising. There were difficulties, of course; the shape of the building, having to wait for the lights to go out before projecting it up. We gave ourselves six weeks, so we had to pull it altogether really quickly. The impact and ‘wow’ factor was great. We even had press coverage from ITV West and around APRIL 2014
four radio interviews”. Paul added, “We had such positive, responses from new media, which was something we were hoping to attract; a new audience. However, it was most definitely a learning curve.” Having worked within outreach programmes, Wendy has worked alongside hard-to-reach, including young adults and prisons, an aspect of her career that she found particularly satisfying: “The prisons were challenging and you have to be careful. One lad refused to take his hat or gloves off. I thought to myself, ‘how can I get through to him?’ so, I got him to scribble something like they did in 'Quick to Draw' and I created something from it, which he was impressed by. At the end of the six weeks for an hour a week, I got them round - he bought me a Mars bar! One of them even went on to art college afterwards.” Wendy lives and breathes art. Paul even jokingly added that it is almost as though creativity “runs through her veins”. Laughing, Wendy agreed, “To be honest, I don't sleep for thinking about different ideas. I wake up and write all
my ideas down in the sketch book by my bed. I always carry a sketch book as I walk about and I then add the sketches I have made in my paintings.” I was keen to find out where Wendy draws her inspiration from: “I love the Impressionists - that's what I do. I don’t do the details. The Cheltenham Racecourse painting reflects that. Rather than a focus on the detail, it's more of an impression and a feel of the races. I'd never drawn a horse before but it’s my vision and interpretation”. Wendy added, “I like to use every material possible and love experimenting. I like to sketch but will like an embossed relief on work. It's the tonal value; I like to make it stand out.” Wendy and Paul have many exciting projects going forward, most recently at The Bear of Rodborough. Brimming Broadway... It’s like stepping back in time, but in a wonderful way. The past meets the present here in an elegant tete a tete that is both reflective and yet somehow modern. Broadway is a keen and vibrant village with a superb range of unique shops and designer boutiques, but it is also deeply steeped in history with its origins dating back to Roman times. Over the centuries it has made its mark in many different ways. In the 1600s it was a major stopping place for the stage coaches that travelled between Worcester and London…and I’ll bet there was some retail therapy taken on board even then. A flagon of this, half a pig and some treacle. You know the kind of thing! The array of shopping these days on offer on Broadway is as wide as it is chic. Here’s our peek at the best of the best… PRIORY GALLERY
The Priory Gallery was launched in 1998, developing contemporary art and sculpture. Liz James has been associated with 19th, 20th & 21st Century art for over 25 years. Liz runs this bijou gallery with her daughter, Lucy. They have over six exhibitions per year promoting quality artists. Most of the artists have been resident with the gallery for many years now and have a large following of clientele. The gallery also offers a plethora of services that includes; restoration, framing, world-wide shipping, home appraisals together with valuations and consultancy provision for homes and businesses. 34 High Street, Broadway Worcestershire WR12 7DT Tel: 01386 853 783 www.priorybroadway.com LOVE HAIR

They act on behalf of private collectors, interior designers and museums; advising on every aspect of sourcing, buying, selling and maintaining fine art. The business was
established as a response to a changing art market and the need to recognise that many clients want not only to be offered fine paintings and works on paper but also to receive expert, straight-forward advice on buying art and building a collection. There’s no doubt that Trinity House want to break down the barriers when it comes to affordability. In fact some of their pieces can start off from as little as £1000. 20 High Street, Broadway WR12 7DT www.trinityhousepaintings.com THE GOLDSMITHY
Jewellery is always a special purchase, but having something handmade for you by skilled craftsmen make it particularly rare and totally unique. They are Members of the National Association of Goldsmiths which was founded way back in 1894. They can also boast being three times winner of De Beers Diamonds International Award which is the most prestigious awards for jewellery design in the industry. No mean feat. At The Goldsmithy they make jewellery to suit all budgets and tastes; wedding rings to large ornate, dramatic pieces. No challenge is too small or too big. From taking part in the design stage, precious metal choice and gem selection, to seeing the completed article you’ll really feel part of the complete process. Art and Barriers Eric Barton leans on his easel to take a glimpse at art gallery, Trinity House in Broadway I know what I like. Whoops there I’ve gone and said it. You know perhaps ten years ago that would have had me being ducked in the village pond as some sort of art heretic. Not so these days and it’s certainly not the case at the Trinity House gallery in Broadway. The building is elegant, the village is elegant and the art on display is eclectic. The environment is a happy mix of very collectable art set in a gallery that is both inspiring and warm in its mien. Trinity House is in fact an international art dealership specialising in Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, Modern British and 19th century works. They also have an exciting collection of modern and contemporary works. In fact, the gallery will be hosting a contemporary exhibition starting 18th April, with a personal appearance by the featured artist on the opening two days. Steven Beale, Trinity House comments, “Now in our eighth year in Broadway Trinity House is pleased to be showcasing what we feel to be our strongest collection to date”. The gallery is absolutely stunning and in a sense is a work of art in itself. You can’t display art in an underpass. It just looks wrong. Beautiful art deserves a beautiful place to show off its character and its statement. The provision of environment and setting is somehow key to delivering the artists intention. I can’t think of any artist that would be happy with his work buried in some dingy unlit basement. Not right. Trinity House has built up a strong reputation for both the quality of the paintings, drawings and sculpture that it exhibits… and for the in-depth expert knowledge that it offers to clients. They act on behalf of private collectors, interior designers and museums; advising on every aspect of sourcing, buying, selling and maintaining fine art. a changing art market and the need to recognise that many clients want not only to be offered fine paintings and works on paper, but also to receive expert, straight-forward advice on buying art and building a collection. Theirs is a culture aimed at making the market approachable and acting as guides throughout the international art world. The range that they cover is vast. From Moore to Matisse the list is as endless as it is spellbinding. There’s no doubt that Trinity House also want to break down the barriers when it comes to affordability. In fact some of their smaller pieces can start off from £1000. The team at Trinity are determined that art should be made available for
everybody and that any misconceptions about visiting galleries should be addressed. Now we’re back to knowing what I like. Art galleries aren’t a secret that are somehow only accessible by those ‘in the know’ or by invitation only. Art needs to be approachable and David Hamilton, Trinity House comments, “We want everybody to be very welcome at our gallery. We are here to help and are very keen that people do come in and browse”. Trinity House and its team also make a huge effort to support local causes such as the Broadway Library with occasional fund-raising events throughout the year. So the next time you’re in Broadway press the buzzer on the door at Trinity House, go in and have a browse. The staff are hugely welcoming and you’ll be amazed at what’s on offer. It might just be the start of a love affair with art or a golden opportunity to add to your collection. And if you know what you like, then so much the better. Take Pride in Priory Gallery Bruce Yardley ‘Picnic Parties’ Signed oil on canvas 31 x 51 cm
We look closer at one of Broadway’s intimate art galleries...
Broadway, one of the most beautiful villages in the Cotswolds, boasts many art galleries, but none as delightfully engaging as The Priory Gallery. Run by Elizabeth James and her daughter Lucy, this intimate gallery houses an outstanding collection of paintings and sculpture of not only national, but alsointernational acclaim. Elizabeth, highly respected, has promoted quality artists for over 25 years. Artists such as Tony de Wolf, from Belgium, who studied the techniques of the Flemish 17th century masters to develop his own stunningly unique contemporary style. Bruce Yardley, whose sundrenched interiors transforms us to a sphere of elegant beauty. Jacqueline Williams leads us into a world celebrating nature, beauty and tables. Paul Hedley’s female figures gracefully contemplate, read and play in their charming surroundings. The sculptures, all limited edition bronzes, from the finest artists, some of whom have worked with the Crown Jewellers are the epitome of grace and form. Benson Landes’ works exemplify his thorough understanding of the female form at rest and dancing, together with a delicate flow of fabrics. Animals from other sculptors inhabit the gallery, each creature possessing their own carefully crafted characters. These are just some of the many cherished artists at Priory Gallery Broadway. CS

Time to relax Surround yourself with luxury, says Rachel Vincent... I had always been a shower girl and found the concept of lounging around for hours in a hot bath surrounded by candles a complete female stereotype... Why would anyone want to become increasingly wrinkly in a large, hot bowl of water surrounded by candles? Surely candles are for romance and baths are for washing? Yet that was before I had the utmost pleasure of diving into a fabulously oversized copper bath, in a hotel in France – from that moment, I admit I was totally converted!
Submerge yourself in the sublime…
If you are re-modelling your bathroom, try and squeeze in the biggest and deepest bath you can. Not only do oversized or freestanding baths look attractive but they completely change the entire ritual of bathing; they cry out at you to fill them with luxurious oils and bubbles, they are decadent and comforting and wrap themselves around you, keeping you warm and relaxed for far longer than a standard bath. Freestanding baths have come down in price dramatically, and retailers such as bathstore.com, have a wide selection of oversized baths from as little as £299. My next priority, space dependent, would be a double sink or a two-sink unit if you share your bathroom with a member of the opposite sex , then a must, it will create the feeling of opulence and balance out the space. If you have an oversized bath installed, not to mention being time efficient on those busy mornings. “There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure but I don’t know many of them” Sylvia Plath.
If you’re not lucky enough to be remodelling your bathroom, you can still create a beautiful bathroom to spend time in. Here’s how…
• Light – lighting can be harsh and not conducive with relaxation, but at the APRIL 2014
same time it needs to be practical. I would always opt for central ceiling lighting, with the option to dim or central ceiling lights, with the addition of wall mounted down lighters that can be controlled independently. This will give you that softer warmer glow for moments of calm and relaxation. • Colour – The key is to create the right ambience in a bathroom; contrary to popular belief, bathrooms do not need to be blue. There are blues which have warm tones suitable for a bathroom, but for the most part, blues can be cold and un-inviting. Warm neutrals work really well and Fired Earth do a great selection of neutral tones such as, “Old Ochre”, that look fresh and clean against white porcelain. • Warmth – Boring as it may seem, a heated towel rail could well become your best friend on cold winter mornings. White fluffy towels from The White Company, gently warmed, have got to be the perfect ending to any bath time ritual. If you’re re-modelling, I would recommend also opting for underfloor heating. Together with a heated towel rail you will be basking in luxury! Heated towel rails are available widely. Head over to bathstore.com -they are sure to fit your space and budget.
• Scent – Fabulous bath oils are essential to pleasurable bathing. I am addicted to Jo Malone’s Lime Basil and Mandarin bath oil £52.00 for 200ml; it will leave you and your bathroom smelling amazing. Alternatively, try Aromatherapy Associates Deep relax bath oil, £39.99 (pictured below) for 55ml which will have you sleeping on clouds.
Whatever size your bathroom is, however new or old the fittings are, by focusing your attention on what will make you feel good when in that space, will improve the space dramatically. It may not look any different but it will feel different; you will feel pampered and relaxed. You will then, of course, have achieved your goal… Happy bathing! CS

Muscari Mutiny! Cheltenham born and bred, our Media Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith, loves the spring. This month Camilla celebrates a baby bulb with staying power...
As guaranteed as your toasted soldiers landing butter side down, grape hyacinths are the spring friend that will never leave your side. Reliable radiance for your rockery – these are the 3 Rs that matter when observing your April border and these baby bulbs tick all the boxes! (Or should that be terracotta pots)?! Grape hyacinth is the common name for this flower which lives in the genus of muscari and gets its name from the Greek word muschos, meaning scent, thought to refer to its light musk like fragrance. The common name is thought to have evolved from the clusters of grape like flowers which huddle together to form the flowering spike. This spike also gives rise to another occasionally used name ‘Church Steeples’. Muscari armeniacum is the one you will see everywhere, our old Charlton Kings garden had a border running the length of the house that was a river of rich vibrant blue every year. I think they look beautiful, especially left to creep on to a gravel pathway. However, to those who see the mundane in these common muscari, let me introduce you to a few cultivars with a difference: Muscari armeniacum ‘Peppermint’ is light blue with snow white tops like mountain peaks and a good scent, while ‘White Magic’ is a sophisticated option for those of you following in Rita Sackville West’s APRIL 2014
shoes and creating a white garden. The common armeniacum is not one to grow for tickling your nasal passages but macrocarpum ‘Golden Fragrance’ has fabulous perfume in spades! Plus, it’s a really unusual flower spike with a yellow lower half and purple tops – nothing like a grape hyacinth really and a good one to test garden visitors with. For the pastel shade lovers amongst you, a recent introduction in the last few years: ’Pink Sunrise’ will keep you
“Not one to introduce to an area where you want five or seven neat flowers consistent every year. If you’re not happy for a spreading display, prepare for muscari mutiny!!”
happy. Strong and confident, covering the border with a mass of beautiful pink blobs; it will easily stand up to and compete with the baby pink confetti like canopies of those large spreading cherry blossoms who could otherwise look down their petals at the dull earth below. The ancient bulbs of muscari love a well-drained sunny site and are perfect for a rockery or walled border. Like Olympic athletes of horticulture, vigour is their name and they will sprint forward and multiply before I’ve even got round to unpacking my ‘squeeze between the arms 50 times a day and feel better’, equipment! Not one to introduce to an area where you want five or seven neat flowers consistent every year. If you’re not happy for a spreading display, prepare for muscari mutiny! Even early herbalist, John Parkinson, noted the bulbs’ tendency to choke surrounding ground. That said, they were a popular choice in Elizabethan gardens and even John Ruskin found time to comment positively about the grape hyacinth. Often taken for granted these days, grape hyacinths are one of the easiest and most un-demanding of our spring flowers. They may not be seen in Chelsea displays or celebrated in the local fashionable press but they are the faithful old friend that I believe every garden needs. CS

The Personal Touch We find out from window shutters specialist, Matt Blewett of Shuttercraft, why shutters will compliment your home perfectly... 1) Can you tell us about Shuttercraft, how you started and what you specialise in? Shuttercraft are the UK’s leading interior window shutters company and have been in business for over 12 years now. I joined Shuttercraft in 2011 and took out a franchise in Gloucestershire. I provide a local service in and around Gloucestershire supplying and fitting the finest quality interior window shutters and blinds and have become an expert in this field.
2) What are the benefits of having shutters in the house rather than curtains? As well as looking stunning in your home, interior window shutters offer many unique benefits over more traditional window coverings, such as curtains and blinds. Window shutters are made up of shutter panels and louvres that are fixed/hinged to a frame that is then fixed to the window recess, wall or door. This helps provide a barrier against unwanted outside noise and also helps retain heat in the winter months whilst providing a barrier against excessive heat in the summer months. Having hinged panels and operable louvres allows the shutters to provide many unique light control and privacy options that curtains can’t offer. Shutters are very easy to clean and virtually maintenance free – making them beneficial for dust allergy sufferers. Because I offer a made-tomeasure service, I can supply shutters to fit just about any window, door or room divider space no matter the size, shape or complexity. 3) I would like shutters and blinds in the same room, can you provide both of these in the same colour to match? Absolutely! I’m able to provide shutters and blinds in a good number of matching colours and often supply clients with shutters for the feature window in a room and then a blind APRIL 2014
window shutters to many converted barn doors, which can present a challenge when you consider the sheer size of the windows/doors, but have become an expert in these style installations. You might be surprised; I can provide a shutter solution to fit just about any window size, shape or complexity. Give me a try!
for a secondary window. Our PURE Wood Venetian Blinds, are of the highest quality and can be ordered in the same slat size as the shutters, which provide the perfect compliment to each other.
4) I live on a very busy road; do the shutters have any sound insulation? Yes! Window shutters offer excellent protection against unwanted outside road, pedestrian and air traffic noise. Because the solid wood, or MDF, panels are fixed to a frame that is fixed to the wall, this provides an added barrier against outside noise and many of my clients come to me for this exact reason. With the louvres and panels closed right up, shutters make your room and home feel incredibly private from the outside world. 5) Do you offer any guarantees when you fit the shutters? Yes, all my shutters come with at least 3 years manufactures guarantee. In fact, my range topping White Teak Sumatra shutters come with 5 years guarantee to help safeguard my clients investment in them and provide added peace of mind. 6) Can you fit blinds or shutters for different shaped windows such as a window shaped as a circle? My shutters are perfect for all special shaped windows from small port holes, octagons and arches to large triangles, bay windows and gable ends. I’ve fitted
7) Do you offer home visits, so that you can recommend a style for our period house? Yes, due to offering a bespoke made-tomeasure fitting service, it’s very important for me to survey your windows and measure them correctly because if your measurements are wrong, even by the smallest margin, there’s a chance they won’t fit when they arrive. Also, my shutters are available in a large number of styles, options and colours and I like to make sure my clients are fully aware of what they’re ordering. I also like to offer my clients my expert advice and recommendations to find the right shutter for their home, style and budget and offer a free consultation and survey to all my clients, with no obligation or pressure to buy. 8) Are your shutters ideal for bathrooms and rooms that suffer from excessive moisture? Yes, I’m able to offer my clients a 100% waterproof shutter in the form of my Java range. The shutter is made from a high quality ABS plastic that makes it completely waterproof and therefore ideal for rooms such as bathrooms, wet rooms and indoor swimming pools that suffer from moisture, condensation or humidity. The range is also incredibly hard wearing – great for family homes and high traffic areas. CS For more information contact me on 01242 649592 or visit my website and request a free quote

Mandy Hall tells us about her bond with Dave, one of Cotswold Farm Park’s calves... PHOTO: ROB WHEATMAN
St George’s Day (April 23rd) marks the beginning of the Great British Beef Week. It’s organised by ‘Ladies in Beef ’, a group of brilliant female farmers who are passionate about championing British beef. My boss, Adam Henson, is a patron of the organisation, so naturally the Farm Park will be joining in the festivities for the week. I thought this month would be the perfect opportunity to talk about Dave, a beautiful Gloucester calf, who I hand-reared “This was my favourite part of over a full season in 2012. His the day; feeding him, checking on mum, a very beautiful and placid him and making sure he had a cow, is used in our milking demonstrations and so her calves lovely clean bed. I absolutely are hand-reared from an early age fell in love with him.” so that she can continue to produce milk. Dave’s mum was milked twice and chin in the familiar way I always daily and I would fill a huge bottle of did. As I walked to the other corner of her milk to feed him with. This was my the barn, he started mooing loudly and favourite part of the day; feeding him, didn’t stop. I ran back to make a fuss of checking on him and making sure he him and on my next attempt to leave, he had a lovely clean bed. I absolutely fell even tried to jump over the gate to get to in love with him. me. I went back one last time and then As the weeks passed and Dave began left for good. Just writing this has given to grow, he became much stronger so me a lump in my throat! the daily challenge of mucking him out One day, nearly 15 months later, Mike became a game to him; he used to skip, Caunter our stockman asked if I would bounce, buck and chase me around his like to go and see Dave. I was delighted, stable. He was still too small to cause me jumping about the place with any harm and my colleagues used to hear excitement. We got in his truck and me in fits of hysterics. headed off down the track to the barn We entered into the winter months he was now kept in. I started to wonder and the farm park was due to close. if he would remember or recognise me, Dave would not be going back on I was worried he might not. display again, he was being moved and I hopped out and followed Mike into put out to run with his herd. the barn, full of Gloucester cattle. I He seemed to sense what was thought it would be practically happening as I walked over to the gate impossible to spot him, so I stood at to say goodbye. He looked up at me, his the gate and called him… chin on my shoulder, leaning into me. I I was gobsmacked as he came scratched and rubbed his ears, cheeks bounding over to me. It was as if no APRIL 2014
time at all had passed. It was truly a memorable and magical moment. In May, Dave will sadly have completed his full farming circle of life with us. It's a part of my job which I have to admit I do struggle with but as strange as it sounds, our farm animal breeds survive because of the public demand for their meat. Gloucester cattle were on the brink of extinction in 1972, and if it hadn’t been for the hard work of Gloucester enthusiasts, promoting the superb beef and cheese from Gloucester cattle, this beautiful breed would no longer be seen grazing in our countryside. I thought it was very fitting to dedic ate this month’s article to Dave and to include some beautiful shots of him and his father Izaac. I’m passionate about supporting our farmers and buying local and seasonal produce, so the Great British Beef Week, is close to my heart. You can do your bit to support British farmers by choosing British meat during your weekly shop. CS The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. SPRING has officially SPRUNG… Nina Acton is the Show Development Officer for RHS Malvern Spring Festival that takes places at the Three Counties Showground from May 8 until May 11. Nina has worked at the Three Counties for the last 15 years. She has Sir Alan Titchmarsh on speed dial and is best buds with Carol Klein. Here, Nina shares with Cotswold Style her top April tips for the garden. April is a month for action in the garden. It is the month where given the chance the weeds will run amuck, the pests will wreak havoc and molehills will become mountains. I’ve taken the liberty of drawing up a little list of things to think about this month. FEED – After our apocalyptic amounts of rain that we have experienced in previous months, the water will have leached the nutrients from the soil. Everything in your garden could do with a good feed. Trees, shrubs and hedges would benefit from a scattering of Growmore or Blood, Fish & Bone. Then for a treat you could give them a nice top dressing of 2-3 inches of mulch. Feed and mulch your roses as well. They don’t like to be left out!
WEED – Hoe, hoe, hoe. Weeds have a tendency to go forth and multiply at an alarming rate so get in early and cut them off at the pass. Also now’s a good time to stake those cottage garden favourites like the lovely lupins and delicious delphiniums. SEED – If you were organized and sowed your sweet peas in the autumn, you could plant them now. Or if you were busy reflecting, (like me) then now’s the time to sow. An apt choice as the sweet pea is April’s flower of the month.
April is also the time of year when people start reusing their garden again and think about digging out their garden furniture. If your outdoor pieces need a

To whet your appetite, here are a few examples of what you can expect. Here are some little known facts about April that may amuse… • April is the second rainiest month of the year after, believe it or not, July. • April always starts on the same day of the month as July and always ends on the same day as December.

INDOCHINA – VIBRANT CULTURE & NATURAL WONDERS Self-professed adventuress; Lucy Garbutt is left serene and spiritual when she takes an iridescent journey to some of Vietnam’s natural wonders
The former French colonies of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are known collectively as Indochina. The mighty coffee-coloured Mekong River carves its course through these countries to connect Thailand and the cultural and geographic spirit of the region. I was lucky enough to visit Vietnam on a recent trip.
Vietnam
Vietnam is a vibrant country of Asian tradition and colonial influences. Its people are diverse and remarkable – wherever you go they display a gracious hospitality which makes Vietnam a very special place to explore. Rumbling North by overnight train through iridescent rice terraces, with a bustle of life beside the track, I was soon in Sapa, in the far north-west of Vietnam in a world of towering peaks and lush river valleys.
Trekking through intriguing hill tribe villages while breathing in the dramatic scenery and crystal clear mountain air, I was in a land time has truly forgotten. The trek was a most peaceful, spiritual and rejuvenating experience the benefits of which l still feel today! Serenity was maintained by views of the distant mountains as the train meandered its way gently back to the bustle of Hanoi, the delightful capital of Vietnam. The exotic style of old Asia with its traditional coffee bars and ancient French townhouses blends with APRIL 2014
the new, with its Parisian-style pavement cafes perfect for some people-watching and sampling the local cuisine – favourite travel ‘must-dos’ for me! Even more exciting was the opportunity to trundle around the tree-lined French quarter by rickshaw or head deep into the narrow streets of the interior to explore the wonderful bustling markets, the rather unusual people who run them and the delicious street cuisine they provide. I found myself enveloped by the serenity of Vietnam once again, a short drive from Hanoi - at Halong Bay. The area is a stunning seascape of over 2,000 magical limestone islands and lovely beaches bathed by the warm crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Basking in glorious hot sunshine and a warm
rippling breeze, I explored the area floating aboard a junk. The tiny islands are dotted with caves, grottos and beaches and the surrounding scenery of towering mountains and lush forests is one of Vietnam’s most dramatic natural sights. With its colourful markets, dramatic mountains, cosmopolitan cities and golden beaches, Vietnam enjoys the full spectrum and is blessed with an intoxicating mix of cultures and stunning natural beauty. Itineraries can be tailor-made for you by World Odyssey – for more information on anything to do with Vietnam, Indochina or anywhere on the planet, please visit www.world-odyssey.com or call one of our travel specialists for advice on: 01905 731373. Always a Good Hair Day We speak to Lisa Walby, owner of hair salon, Francesco’s and got some much needed advice to give us all luscious locks… What made you decide to become a hairdresser? I always loved playing with hair when I was younger and loved being creative with my hands. Initially when I told my mum she said "There’s not much money in that", but when she realised she would get free hair for life she soon changed her tune!
What’s the history behind Francesco group, where did it originate from? We started in 1967 from Francesco’s van! His brother, Peter joined in the 1970’s and in 1983 they introduced franchising, and continues to maintain an Italian ethos; stylish, unique and luxurious! Is the dip-dye trend over yet, and if so, what is the next trend for Spring? The dip-dye hasn’t had its day just yet it’s now called ombré and is now much more subtle. We’ve started using colours that are more natural, blended and warmer tones as opposed to dark roots and blonde ends. Although we still do a lot of the original look and it looks great.
What advice you can give to someone getting married in six months but wants to improve the condition of their hair? Regular trims every six weeks, use a salon professional shampoo and conditioner, one I recommend is Wella SP repair), always apply wearable oil such as Wella lux oil and a heat protector before drying. Most weird and wonderful tips to keep your hair looking healthy? Rinse your hair with cold water at the very end of cleansing your hair to close the cuticles for more shine and tighten the follicles to prevent the scalp producing too much sebum. This will help to keep the scalp cleaner and oil free for longer.
Do you offer blow-dry’s for special events? Yes we do, blow dry’s, hair ups and even
offer tutorials for people who are not having their event locally and want to be able to do their own hair.
How do I know what hairstyle will suit my face shape, can you advise customers? Yes we can advise on suitable styles for different face shapes, but it’s very personal to each individual so a consultation is necessary.
Which products would you recommend for troublesome hair? Kera straight is the leading brand we use for helping to control unruly hair. Otherwise known as, a ‘permanent blowdry’ or a ‘Brazilian blow-dry. It helps to dry the hair in less than half the time, eliminates frizz, repels the moisture in the atmosphere and leaves the hair feeling softer and shinier. SPRING
Professional Makeup Artist, Samantha Davis, shows how to get the sweetest looks for Spring
Making a welcome return this spring are pretty pastels and a pop of colour. Not only will candy shades and block colours be gracing our wardrobes, they’ll also be a big feature in our makeup bags too. So put away those neutral eye shadows and rich berry lipsticks, it’s all about a fresh-faced look. Here, I will share my top picks for wearing this season’s biggest beauty trends. If you’re looking to emphasise those beautiful eyes, take a peek at Dior’s Pastel Fontanges Couleurs Couture Colour Eyeshadow Palette (£41). It contains five fruity shades with a blend of sugared-almond pink, baby blue, and golden yellow for a fun pop of colour. It’s the perfect spring eye look combination! For those that don’t tend to wear
much eyeshadow, try using the light blue shade as a wash of colour over the eyelid, keeping the rest of your makeup very natural looking – this is a great alternative way to subtly incorporate this pretty spring trend. Key to this look is radiant skin with a fresh and pretty flush of colour. Benefit’s box blush in Sugarbomb APRIL 2014
(£23.50) is one of my favourites with its four girly shades of peach, soft plum, pink and rose. To apply, swirl your brush to combine the shades, and dust it on the top of the apples of your cheeks. Another must have this spring is Benefit’s Lollitint – a beautiful candyorchid shade (£24.50). This product is perfect to pop in your handbag as it doubles up as a cheek and lip tint – a great time saver! I also love how light it feels on the skin. Another key trend seen hitting the runway for this season is the bold lip. Electric orange is tipped to one of the hottest makeup trends this spring and fear not, it’s a lot more wearable than you think. The key is finding one that will suit your skin tone. For fairer skin, choose one with a peachy undertone – I love Bobbi Brown’s
lipgloss in Nectar (£18). For medium to dark skin you can opt for a more intense shade such as Nars lipstick in Heat Wave (£18.50) for a fabulous stand out pout. Pair this gorgeous look with your favourite spring dress, and for the finishing touch chose a complimentary shade of nail polish for prettiness from head to toe! CS

EASTER BUN in five easy stages Update your look with a seriously stylish up-do this April In association with STAGE ONE To start creating this popular look, you need to curl all the hair, which makes the hair a lot easier to work with. Start by sectioning the hair, working on small and neat sections.
STAGE TWO Next, we will put the hair up. To do this, you will need a hair bobble. First gather up all the hair and hold it in place with the bobble depending on how high you would like the bun. Then create a secure pony tail.
Repeat this all the way around the bobble and you will start to see the bun shape come together.
You will need to curl every section, without missing any. Start at the bottom of the hair and work up, each time releasing the next section; big clips are best used to keep all the upper sections out the way. Continue this way until all the hair is curled.
STAGE THREE Now we need to back comb – as the bobble is secure you should be able to do this without the hair moving. Take hold of some of the curls and lightly comb back on the hair to create volume and texture.
88 COTSWOLD STYLE
STAGE FOUR You are now ready to start pinning up the hair. Take small sections of the hair, pulling out and away from the hair bobble, twisting around your fingers into a barrel shape, then whilst holding it against the head, slide the grip into the bottom of the barrel.
STAGE FIVE After pinning all the hair there may be a few gaps within the bun – to get rid of these, take your brush and lightly smooth over and pin where needed. You now have a gorgeous and fabulous new look! CS

A spring in your step Spring is the season for many things we await, but shoes should always be at the top of your list. Put away those winter boots, freshen up your pedicure and take your toes out for a spin. It’s time to appreciate the finer footwear months… Words by Grace Parry, fashion and lifestyle writer Part of me really wants to say that there is no best time of the year for shoes; every time of year should be a great time for shoes. But, as the weather starts to warm up, I bet you’ll agree that the change in our footwear choices is like no other. Boots are great. I do love boots. But they’re nothing compared to an opentoed sandal, beach style flip-flop or, the summertime classic, the wedge! Wouldn’t you agree? It’s never been much of a surprise that I love shoes. I’d much rather watch my footwear collection grow that build my wardrobe, but I know I’m not alone. It does seem to be much more of a woman thing to obsess over shoes and that’s okay. Most of my outfit choices are (annoyingly) built around shoes and I always weigh up the financial value of everything against the equivalent cost in shoes. It may seem a bit excessive, but with this fuelling my topic this month, I hope you’ll love the staple summer style’s that have popped up on my radar for spring summer 2014. As soon as the sun pops out, even for a second, I feel the need to bring out my favourite pair of wedges. The wedge is always my go-to shoe for summer and is so versatile. The brown leather APRIL 2014
pair from Carvela will be perfect for this year. They’re easy to wear and can take you from day to night without a second thought.
If I could only choose two pairs to take me from spring to autumn, my second choice would always be a simple, yet smart, flat sandal; like the pair from Topshop. When it comes to holidays, they’re exactly what you want and make it easy to channel that effortless summertime look we’re all lusting after. Courts probably wouldn’t be the most obvious choice for the warmer months, yet I’d always argue otherwise. If there is a chill in the air of an evening or you just really want to smarter up your look – there I no other option; the court is queen. Kurt Geiger stock statement styles you can always rely on and take away the boring shoe-stigma courts tend to get labelled with! You know when I mentioned the effect of the open toe just a few short paragraphs ago, well here she is. Isn’t this
LK Bennett number a beauty? Opentoed sandals are must during summer. I’ll often try and wear them through autumn, refusing to let the cold bother me, but I soon have to store them away and wait patiently for just this moment. And finally, the staple, sensible and (hopefully) statement flat shoe, just like these Russell & Bromley leopard slippers. Whether this be a loafer, ballerina or tennis shoe, admit it – you know you love them. They’re probably the shoes you live in and refuse to give up. But worry no more, you need them to get through the summer and hey, they’ve been with you this long, so why stop now? CS

“Some in society now express views not to a few, or even hundreds, but thousands or tens of thousands of people, and they do it in black and white, for their employer to enjoy as well” When you really think about it, we all spend about 8 hours sleeping, about 8 hours at work (or considerably more) and the rest of the day is spent eating, bathing, carrying out our ablutions and watching television. So the most meaningful part of our waking life is spent at work. It is no wonder then that what we do at work not only defines us as human beings, but events in the workplace and its regulation act as a barometer for what is going on in society itself. For example, in the 20th Century, the workplace cause celeb was the bad back. You couldn’t see it, doctors couldn’t really treat it, and it meant a period off work without any meaningful challenge. Strangely, in the 21st Century we don’t seem to suffer with the bad back so much anymore, and its place has been taken by work place stress. I don’t doubt the existence of stress; I feel it personally every day, but I remain curious as to why it was not prevalent 20 years ago? Having said that, it is only 20 years ago that emails first began to intrude on our lives and require immediate written responses whereas before this, we had to rely on the mail, or the internal memo which acceptably sat in Intrays on the corner of our desk for days, sometimes weeks before requiring a response. Further evidence of this barometer nature of employment relations would be how the blossom of young love now presents itself. I don’t consider myself old, but when I was courting a girl, it would involve a trip to the pictures, and those awkward, fumbling conversations as to what a girl was doing one evening. This year I saw the modern version of this; a young employee used text to send a photo of his own genitals to a girl who worked on reception! I have to say it was a new one on me and I thought I had seen everything before. I have no idea if the ploy was successful for this young Romeo, but it was not quite as successful APRIL 2014
for his employment, which came to an abrupt end. On a similar note, only as little as 10 years ago, if an employee wanted to complain about their boss (I know it seems unlikely but it does happen), it would happen in the pub or the tea room, and it would be a hushed conversation overheard by few. Now, we employment lawyers are faced with questions from employers resulting from such employee opinions being posted on Facebook or Twitter. For some reason, some in society now express those views not to a few, or even hundreds, but thousands or tens of thousands of people, and they do it in black and white, for their employer to enjoy as well. It should be little wonder that what was a little moan, now becomes the cause to dismiss employees. In fact many of my employer clients now check prospective candidates for jobs by looking at their Facebook page, and teenagers who have never known better, effectively scupper their chances of a good job perhaps 5 years after writing something foolish; (you might recall the first youth police and crime commissioner who resigned after tweets she made some years before were discovered). Employers have struggled to cope with the rapid change in society, seeming to me to become unnecessarily paralysed in the face of new problems arising from the way our society is evolving at a rapid pace. In the coming months, I will be looking at the myths that surround employment law, as well as some of the more bizarre behaviour that gives rise to such myths, outlining developments and demonstrating hopefully that these issues which employers believe are hard to deal with are in fact much simpler than they imagine. The wheels on the bus…
102 COTSWOLD STYLE
The mighty Commercial Group has recently invested in local company In2Print. Eric Barton digs out the deal renowned for consistently delivering superior quality products, services and consultancy to businesses on a nationwide scale. Arthur Hindmarch is a hugely affable and elegant man, who as CEO of the group has a depth of vision and business acumen that is as sharp, as it is innovative. Arthur comments, ‘In the early days of Commercial our biggest challenge was people. It wasn’t about me, it was about finding the quality people who I knew would take the business forward in the direction I had in mind.’ It’s clear that the business relationship between The Commercial Group and their customers is crucial. Arthur goes on to say, ’We really care about how we do things. Being customer focused is an integral part of our business operation’. Every successful company has at its heart a strong business ethos. The Commercial Group is no different. They engulf themselves in five core values that they know work. It’s a happy cocktail of team work, innovation, thinking
outside the box, going the extra mile and being considerate. In fact that’s not a bad plan for life! Arthur Hindmarch further comments, ‘The recession did bite a lot companies but we weathered it very well enabling us to sustain and grow our staff numbers throughout the whole downturn. We also remained very cash positive during this period and really swam against the business tide at the time’. As we all know in business

If it isn’t broken don’t try and fix it. It’s an old adage, but seems to be a fair modus operandi for a plethora of investments and some take over’s. Like the children’s nursery rhyme; if ‘the wheels on the bus are going round and round’ then let it be, take an interest, look to develop and expand the model. Sounds about right. The mighty colossus, The Commercial Group, based in Leckhampton has done just that with local print company In2Print. The Commercial Group and its founders are no strangers to investment and development. It’s a business story that’s goes back to 1991 when The Commercial Group was first established in a single sparse room with only one telephone. Humble beginnings indeed. The growth of this company has been steady, well-planned with the business goals crystal clear. Arthur Hindmarch, his sister, Simone Hindmarch-Bye and longstanding university friend Alastair de Q Adams formed the firm which has now grown to become the largest independently owned business services group in the UK. It’s an amazing success story born out of vision, sheer hard work and business guts. The scent of success with this group hangs heavy on the air. Today the company comprises four divisions; office supplies, IT services, interiors and print. This £35 million turnover company is

sometimes its sink or swim and with staff numbers expected to reach almost 200 in the not too distant future and turnover set to soar to £40 million it’s very much ‘swim’ at The Commercial Group. It’s this success and strategic planning that fuels expansion and can often lead to investments in other companies. It’s this very achievement that has enabled Arthur Hindmarch to look towards like-minded individuals and companies that fit his vision and desire for future growth. Blipping on Arthur’s radar was local print company In2Print. This is a company that Arthur APRIL 2014
Hindmarch has viewed with interest for some time. Arthur goes on to say, ‘Investing in In2Print was always going to be a great fit for us. It’s a wellmanaged company that holds close the very same core values that we cherish. It’s always my aim to make two plus two equal five or six. In2Print has always been a good company and we aim to help make them even more successful’. Like North Sea oil the pipeline of supply will one day run out if not continually fed and new resource/business found. Pete Cassidy, MD at In2Print comments, ‘We have a
very strong business model here, but do want to expand the business in terms of sales. We are nowhere near our full capacity and we were looking for another pipeline of sales and growth. This relationship with The Commercial Group will produce another flow of new business into that funnel’. The very fact that The Commercial Group has a vast array of customers with print requirements will in effect send new business gushing down this pipeline. Arthur finally says, ‘The printing market in Gloucestershire needs in my view to consolidate itself. There are simply too many printers chasing work. Bringing In2Print into the fold will help create this consolidation’. Selling services up at the sharp end of any business coalface is always a challenge. And it’s this activity that The Commercial Group excel at. Pete Cassidy goes on to comment, ‘Arthur and I have known each other for a number of years and have in the past invested in other companies together. Providing The Commercial Group with a raft of print and finishing services for its customers will enhance our planned growth over the next eighteen months and as Arthur said, this is a really good fit for us too’. Both companies have a deep-rooted belief in developing strong, longstanding partnerships with their customers and being solutions focused in the services that they supply. This is a good marriage and not just one of pure convenience. It’s their desire to strategically co-create a situation where the slack capacity at In2Print is taken up and the future is planned with healthy growth and direction in mind. Seeing the possibilities is what drives most investments. It’s certainly about the present, but probably more about the future …and if the wheels on the bus are firmly attached and performing well, then perhaps seek to develop rather than replace? The switched-on brother and sister partnership at The Commercial Group know this only too well. Very refreshing. CS For more information www.commercial.co.uk www.in2print.com

Your questions answered by Barbara Jordan at Jordans Solicitors
Q
I have three children, and wish to divorce my husband. He is simply never at home, and lives as though he is a single man, leaving me to look after the children all the time, deal with the administration of family finances, and I also go out to work part time. We have been together quite a long time, and I am very worried that I have heard that if I divorce my husband I will have to leave our home, which is worth somewhere in the region of ÂŁ300,000 and is subject to a mortgage of ÂŁ150,000. If I am forced to leave the house then my children and I will have no alternative but to go into rented accommodation, which would, I think, be very unsatisfactory and give me no security for the future. My husband has a large income, although we have not managed to save very much due to his extravagant lifestyle. What can I do?
A
I think you are worrying unnecessarily. Your home does not sound as though it is particularly large or luxurious, bearing in mind the number of children you have and the accommodation that they are going to need. In the case of M v B (Ancillary Proceedings: Lump Sum) [1998] 1FLR 53 CA, the Court of Appeal had to deal with a similar situation where there were insufficient assets to easily meet the immediate housing needs of both parties at a time when their needs were comparable. In this case Lord Justice Thorpe said:
'In all these cases it is one of the paramount considerations, in applying the s 25 criteria, to
endeavour to stretch what is available to cover the need of each for a home, particularly where there are young children involved. Obviously the primary carer needs whatever is available to make the main home for the children, but it is of importance, albeit it is of lesser importance, that the other parent should have a home of his own where the children can enjoy their contact time with him. Of course there are cases where there is not enough to provide a home for either. Of course there are cases where there is only enough to provide one.' In your case it seems to me likely that there is only enough money here to provide an appropriate home for you, and I think it is therefore going to be the case that your husband will have to look at saving with a view to remortgaging until you can take over the mortgage on the former matrimonial home or downsize, when your children are older.
Whilst this may be a harsh outcome for your husband, the Court will have no alternative but to put the children's housing needs first.
This does not, of course, mean that you will be entitled to take in the long term all of the equity from the family home in which you were living, and in due course there will no doubt be an Order for Sale requiring some division of the equity in the family home, which will offer your husband a capital sum at that time. Restaurant Review
By food writer, Shelle Duffin
MONTPELLIER BRASSERIE, Cheltenham On a trip to Cheltenham, aside from visiting the notorious racecourse during Gold Cup week, Montpellier is the place that holds the buzz factor. Nicknamed ‘The Chelsea of Cheltenham’, this trendy part of town models luxury and elegance with its stunning architecture and string of stylish boutiques, jewellers and galleries stretching from one end of the street to the other. With its stunning architecture and string of stylish boutiques, jewellers and galleries, it’s the most sought out place in town. And of course, where there’s a stylish street, there’s a trendy wine bar where Cheltenham’s fashionable locals assemble for a relaxing ‘bucket’ of wine after work or a leisurely lunch on the weekend. Since opening in 2011, The Montpellier Brasserie and Gallery has become the hot spot for many of the town’s sociable residents and prestigious events. Arriving on Saturday night following a raucous race week, one would expect Cheltenham to be somewhat sedate since the departure of the Irish, leaving the locals to nurse some rather sore heads following the celebration (or commiseration) of Lord Windermere’s Gold Cup victory. Not least myself and my dining partner, ‘The Duchess’ (aptly nicknamed by our race-going companions), who were definitely in need of a little rejuvenation. Montpellier Brasserie certainly provided the tonic; a lively tone stemmed from the bar into the restaurant with cocktails shaken and
bottles of fizz freely poured, as people laughed amongst friends or huddled intimately on corner tables, enjoying the good company and culinary treats before them. Sat comfortably in the candlelit corner we began with a ‘Montpellier’ cocktail, a refreshing ‘Daisy Cutter’:crushed mint leaves shaken with yellow chartreuse, elderflower, vodka and dry vermouth, which we sipped as we assessed the vast amount of choice on the menu. Dishes on offer include a selection of classic French dishes from Moules Mariniere to Steak Au Poivre, injected with some ‘Best of British’ from the selection of local 28 day matured steaks and beer battered fish and chips. Whilst we reviewed our options, we were offered a selection of homemade breads, olives and spiced cashew nuts to nibble on until ‘the big decision’ was made. Starters range in price from £5.50 for a seasonal Jerusalem Artichoke Verlouté to £9.50 for a trio of Cornish scallops with a lightly spiced shellfish bisque. Main courses offer seasonal ingredients with additional exclusives on the daily specials, and range from £12.50
for a refreshing pea and mint risotto to £17.95 for roasted lamb loin with rosemary dauphinoise potatoes, aubergine puree and salsa verde. For those seeking something a little more luxurious, there’s also whole Cornish crab to share and various cuts of beef from the grill to make up a fine selection of steaks. The food here is good, but doesn’t go without fault. The trio of scallops, which on any menu is a personal favourite of mine, were slightly disappointing. Despite these little succulent gems being perfectly cooked, they were slightly gritty from where, one can only presume, they hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned and were inconsistent in presentation, with one of the three still having its roe attached. I’m personally a fan of the roe being left on; sweet in flavour, I always find it a waste when removed. However when it comes to consistency in a dish, it’s either all or nothing. In the mood for indulgence, we both opted for the 8oz fillet steak priced at £24.95, and were not let down by the quality and quantity of the meat. The accompaniments of chestnut mushrooms and grilled cherry tomatoes however were overloaded and felt unnecessary, as the meat was more than capable of speaking for itself. Nevertheless, washed down with a glass of rich Argentinian Malbec specifically recommended by our attentive waitress, the experience as a whole certainly wasn’t too shabby. If you still have room, the hot chocolate fondant with white chocolate jelly and salt caramel ice cream is definitely worth a look in, and was wolfed down rapidly. Choose wisely at The Montpellier Brasserie and the odds are the experience will bring in a definite winner. CS The Montpellier Brasserie, Cheltenham T: 01242 228 666 W: www.themontpellier.co.uk

Seasonal Goodness This month food writer, Shelle Duffin, gets us all in the mood for Easter and gives us the perfect recipe to celebrate the end of Lent Easter is one of my favourite occasions in the year – winter is over and Spring is back on the scene with more bloom and colour than ever before, bringing with it a real feeling of excitement. A burst of brightness stands before us as we take in the lighter nights that landscape the evening sky and smell the sweet scent of the blossoming daffodils that carpet the ground before us. As we pack away the thermals for another year and come out of hibernation, new life is also born in the many fields surrounding us as lambs hop, skip, and snuggle up to their mothers’ for warmth – I feel this cue to play ‘Greensleeves’ as I write this.
Easter, for me, marks another very special occasion – the end of the Lent. Forty gruelling days, and forty even more gruelling nights of avoiding all the things I love most in the world – cheese, chocolate, gin, mashed potato drizzled with Cotswold Gold Truffle Oil, cake; the list could easily go on a lot longer, although the accomplishments are unfortunately a little shorter. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 4 hot-crossed buns, sliced into halves 100ml dry sherry 500g rhubarb, ends trimmed 2 x 298g tin of mandarin segments, drained 1 x 135g pack of strawberry jelly 1 x 135g pack of orange jelly 1 orange, juice only 50g caster sugar 500ml good-quality, thick vanilla custard 500ml double cream 50g icing sugar To decorate 2 bags of mini eggs Chocolate flakes METHOD • Preheat the oven to 180ºC. • Chop the rhubarb into 3cm pieces
and place them in an ovenproof dish with the juice from the orange and sprinkle with the sugar. • Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until the rhubarb has softened but still holds its shape. • Make up the jelly according to the packet instructions. Put the orange segments in with the orange jelly, and the rhubarb in with the strawberry jelly and place in the fridge to set.
• Toast the hot-crossed buns and cut them into bite-sized pieces and arrange them in the base of a large trifle dish. Drizzle with sherry, ensuring each piece gets a coating. • Slice the rhubarb jelly into cubes and assemble on top of the hot-crossed buns and then repeat the method with the orange jelly and position over the rhubarb custard. • Pour the custard over the jelly and then place in the fridge for an hour to set. • Using an electric whisk, whip the cream, icing sugar and the other half of the sherry (to taste) until the mixtures thickens, peaks and holds its shape. • Spoon the cream onto the custard making sure you cover the trifle all over. • Finish by crumbling the chocolate flake over the trifle and sprinkle with the mini eggs. Easter Trifle
onto the path of temptation, remember the art of confession is discretion! So whether you’re gloating following a triumphant Lent or playing the discretion card and turning your attentions to celebrating Easter, here is a treat for you to serve up to family and friends on Easter Sunday. A British classic with a few seasonal twists, which as a whole, incorporates both occasions perfectly. And if you can manage to keep any mini eggs aside (or my advice would be to buy quadruple the amount) no Easter Sunday can go amiss without a traditional Easter egg hunt (no matter how old you are!)

Restaurant Review
TARRAGON, Cheltenham Mark Hopkins dined at Tarragon, Cheltenham recently and told us all about his experience... A perennial herb from the daisy family?; a theatre in Toronto, Canada?; or a Catalonian city on the Spanish Mediterranean? No, this Tarragon is to be found in the beautiful Montpellier district of Cheltenham. A little gem of a restaurant that offers an outside the box approach to its cuisine. The Tarragon is unassuming and unpretentious. Its owner and chef, Sadek Ahmed, is passionate about food with a truly international flavour allowing those who wish to be adventurous the opportunity. The menu is original but boasts a few traditional dishes with the chefs own little twists. As you wander along the Regency, Montpellier street, you spot the Tarragon restaurant seated casually amongst the stylish surroundings; it has an inviting feel that draws your attention. As we enter the restaurant we were greeted by friendly and welcoming staff. First impressions are important and you only have one chance to make one; as we were shown to our table the pristine table linen along with gleaming cutlery and glasses reflected the Tarragon’s attention to detail. As we deliberated over the small, but lively ,international menu our drinks arrived; a fruity Chardonnay. The menu requires a time to ponder as there are some interesting options. Offerings for the main course included: Saddle of Wild Boar, alpaca, the ‘Catch of the Day’, Red Mullet, along with more traditional options such as cod and chips, lamb shank and pork bellies all with a little twist unique in its style, starters ranged from Beef Carppachio, a fabulous crab pannacotta, to a cauliflower and vanilla soup. The desserts ranged from the usual suspects but with the chefs own added twist from the chef. To begin I had the scallops that were simply amazing. Rachael chose the crab pannacotta, which looked as good as it tasted! We continued with pork APRIL 2014
“The food was truly spectacular in conception, preparation, preparation and taste” belly for me, and red mullet for Rachael. The pork was succulent and tender and was served with crisp, fresh, local vegetables in a tasty jus. Rachael’s fish was beautifully presented with locally grown potatoes and a creative aubergine pasta. The food was truly spectacular in it conception, preparation, presentation and taste. The wine list is extensive and exclusive to the Tarragon with suggestions under each description of main course dishes to help you make the right choice to accompany your meal. The beers and ciders on offer are all local with a selection from a Cheltenham brewer, along with a few large brand options. The Tarragon is also open for breakfast from 10am till 12pm, then their lunch menu is available until 5pm, dinner is served until 11pm. The breakfast and lunch menus offer the same kind of style and variation as the dinner menu. There are also special wine tasting and food tasting evenings combining 6 courses with 6 wines for you to taste and discuss.
The Tarragon is a unique and refreshing venue. Sadek actively discusses his visions on flavour, texture and preparation with his guests and values the feedback; making him a proactive restaurateur with a can do attitude and approach. CS

Easter Roast Leg of Lamb and Pauillac Amongst the symbols of Easter the lamb is one of the oldest. In past centuries it was considered a lucky omen to meet a lamb because of its religious symbolism. The oldest prayer for the blessing of lambs can be found in the 7th century sacramentary of the Benedictine monastery, Bobbio in Italy. Two hundred years later Rome had adopted it, and thereafter the main feature of the Pope’s Easter dinner for many centuries was roast lamb. In Eastern Europe the lamb pops up at not just as a main meal, but in the shape of pastries as well, and often forms the centrepiece at an Easter table.. This is a custom in France as well – in Alsace if you ask for Easter lamb you’ll most likely be directed to the bakery! Here you’ll find lambshaped brioche sprinkled with sugar, wearing ribbons around their necks as they sit temptingly in the shop windows. Pauillac in France is not only famous for its wonderful wines but also for its lamb, which is a delicacy in the area. The lamb comes from sheep that graze on the Médoc marshes and amongst the vines after the grape harvest. However, you don’t have to live in France to enjoy lamb from the salt marshes – Salt Marsh Lamb is available a little closer to home from the estuaries around the UK. In fact, our Salt Marsh Lamb is much sought after by the French, to whom most production is exported. Rick Stein served it (Agneau Pré-Salé) to Jacques Chirac at the AngloFrench summit in 2001 to celebrate the President’s birthday. Considering that chefs and celebrities are extolling its sweet and tender virtues you may be wondering what Salt Marsh Lamb actually tastes like. The lamb doesn’t taste of salt or seaweed, but has a darker colour and more delicate, sweet flavour. It is usually very tender, probably because there are no hills for the lambs to walk up and down. The lambs graze on APRIL 2014
Nick Stephens shows us the perfect way to serve lamb this coming Easter marshes in coastal estuaries that are washed by the tides and support a range of salt-tolerant grasses and herbs such as samphire, sparta grass, thrift, sorrel and sea lavender. If you are serving Lamb this Easter then the wines of Pauillac are perfect as an accompaniment. This appellation has been hailed as legendary, having no les than 3 of Premier Grand Crus Classés (First Growths) out of the 5 in Bordeaux in its fold and boasting fabulous terroir. The vineyards of Pauillac lie on the undulating hills above the marshland and produce unique wines with a great concentration of flavours. Pauillac is the home of Cabernet Sauvignon based wines, with elements of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. I have just discovered a fantastic new Pauillac which is new to the UK. Named, 'Pauillac' after the appellation, it is very typical of the region with polished, velvety tannins and great depth. You'll often find that top chateaux produce classic wines that represent the appellation from parcels of vines that don't make the Grand Vin and as such, these are insider choices from those in the know. They are made by the same winemaker who creates the Grand Vin to a very high standard. 'Pauillac' is a wine with intense flavours of cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) and soft black fruits. It's nicely rounded and has an elegant finish with hints of liquorice and black cherry. I'm sure this will be enjoyed by those who prefer sophistication and subtlety to power in a wine. It will be the perfect partner for pink lamb, moist roast pork, duck and veal. Why not try Pauillac wine with this lovely recipe?
Gigot D’agneau A La Francaise (Roast Leg Of Lamb French-Style)
Ingredients 1 leg of lamb 1 tbsp peanut oil salt & freshly ground pepper ½ tsp thyme 2 large cloves garlic, each cut into slivers 2 onions cut crosswise in half 2 bay leaves 1 carrot cut crosswise into 6 pieces 1 cup water flageolet beans
Method • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Rub the meat all over with the oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper and the thyme. Make gashes in the flesh of the leg and insert the garlic slivers. Place the leg, the thickest side down, in a roasting pan and scatter around it the onion halves, bay leaves and carrot pieces. Place in the oven and roast for 1 hour. Remove the lamb and pour off the fat from the pan. Return the lamb to the pan, the thickest side up. Pour the water into the pan and continue roasting for about 30 minutes – longer if you like your lamb well done. Remove the lamb from the oven, discarding the vegetables, and serve with flageolet beans. Enjoy!

SMILE PLEASE!
We regularly visit the dentist, we know about plaque prevention; we brush and floss, twice a day to keep our teeth healthy and avoid bad breath. Despite our awareness of human dentistry, many pet owners do not realise that their pets can get the same problems as us. So, why should you care for your pets teeth? Well, for the same reason you care for your own. The most common disease in pets is periodontal disease. Plaque and gingivitis (red gums) are seen regularly by vets and theses symptoms can quickly lead to periodontal disease – which cannot be reversed and leads to circulating bacteria in your pet’s bloodstream. This can cause damage to the heart, liver and kidneys. In other words, bad teeth can lead to a sick animal. Often when dental disease is pointed out to owners, they say that they hadn’t noticed any change in their pets behaviour so it can’t be causing them any discomfort. But remember, our pets are descended from wild animals, and some of those instincts have remained with them; advertising that you are sick or not
eating because you have toothache will not do you any favours in the wild! As a result, many pets continue eating even though they are experiencing chronic pain. So, what can you do to look after your pet’s teeth? Firstly, have a look in your pets mouth, or ask one of our nurses to do it for you. This should be done regularly. Check to see if the gums appear red or inflamed, if your pets breath smells foul or if you can see broken teeth or infection then urgent veterinary attention is needed A longer more preventative solution is daily brushing to remove plaque before it mineralizes and becomes tartar (the
stuff that needs cracking off whilst your pet is under anaesthetic). Plaque builds up within hours, just like it does in our own mouths, and it only takes a few days for it to become tartar. It’s important that owners commit to brushing, ideally daily. Here at Vets on the Park, we can help you start your homecare programme with a series of nurse consultations that will help you through each step, as slowly as necessary, to avoid upsetting your pet. With plenty of positive reinforcement and a handful of liver treats we hope that your pet will actually come to enjoy brushing! The secret? Start them young, as early as 8-12 weeks old. However, we often find that even the old timers can learn quickly to accept toothbrushing If your pet needs a scale and polish to get them started we are offering half price dentals for the month of April 2014. “After completing these two rides I already have a sore backside and I am not looking forward to this feeling getting worse in the coming weeks as my training miles increase.”
’’
The sun has been making an appearance recently and so have many locals in the shape of running and cycling. I have always noticed that the sunshine gets people get outside and start exercising outdoors, which is so good to see. A few months ago, I mentioned that the weather tends to have a big impact on youth sport and this is highlighted further here. When I played football full time, you would never see me running or cycling around the streets, as I did enough exercise at ‘work’. I didn’t feel the need too. But now I don’t play, I have joined forces with the fitness vibe and have been out twice in the last week on my new road bike, getting some much needed fresh air into my lungs. In fact, I recently signed up to take part in a charity bike ride for Prostate Cancer UK that will begin in London and finish in Amsterdam. I will be representing Cheltenham Town FC, as each Football League club are sending at least one representative to take part. The event will be highly publicised in media outlets such as Sky Sports News and TalkSport. After completing these two rides, I already have a sore backside and I am not looking forward to this feeling getting worse in the coming weeks as my training miles increase. I must say, I now
have new found respect and admiration for avid cyclers. Looking forward to the coming spring months generally sees the average golfer dust off his/her clubs from the garage and get out onto the course. I have already thought about getting mine out and if I have the time, I will. The best Golf major tournament of the year is in April and is played at Augusta national, Georgia. For these four days I will be glued to the television, as I love this event. I only heard this morning that Tiger Woods is in doubt for the competition due to back spasms and although he will only be one player, you cannot argue that the tournament is a bigger spectacle with him in it. I am due be going skiing this month something that I have NEVER been allowed to do as a footballer, so I am very much looking forward to that. Having said that, I am not looking forward to being a beginner. I do like to do well at things and I really hope I pick it up quickly. I will report back in next month’s issue, hopefully not from a hospital bed! CS @duffo16

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY Laura Milne tells us how we can feel healthy, energised and feel great? Want to be healthier and re-energised but not necessarily lose weight? Not everyone wants to shift those extra pounds; wellness is so important to everyone, regardless of size. Interestingly, my guidance is never about going on a diet and restricting calories, even if weight loss is your goal; it’s about getting healthy. Being healthy means feeling good, boundless energy, a strong immune system, silky hair, glowing skin, no excess weight and no health problems. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Let’s fact it, being 100% healthy is hard in our society, but there are very simple steps you can take to help make big changes to your health and well-being.
My Top Ten Tips
1
REMOVE OR LIMIT TOXINS Wheat, gluten, excess sugar, caffeine, dairy and processed foods are all toxins to your body and put pressure on your liver and gut. Try to limit or avoid these as much as possible.
2
GO ORGANIC WHERE YOU CAN AFFORD TO Pesticides and chemicals are destroying our brain cells, causing cancer and puts pressure on our bodily system, amongst other things. Try to buy organic where you can or at least wash all fruit and veg thoroughly before eating.
3
GO WALKING Take advantage of our beautiful countryside and go walking. Leave the phone at home, and take in your surroundings. Just by doing this, you are practicing mindfulness; engaging your body, getting your blood and hormones moving, breathing in fresh air, and getting vitamin D from the sun. is vital for your wellbeing.
4
GOOD SUPPLEMENTATION Unfortunately most of us don’t get what we need from diet alone. If you have been on medication, drink alcohol each week, or eat a lot of bread, I am pretty sure your gut needs lots of support. The main supplements I recommend are: omega 3 fish oils for brain health, probiotics for gut health and a greens drink to help your body absorb extra nutrients easily. Wholefoods, nutrition centre or Aliment online are all great places to go and stock up.
will help your brain to recover and maximise your homone function, which will help your body. As a guide, try getting to bed by 10pm. Keep your electrical devices out of the room, room temperature cool and fall gently into slumber.
5
INCREASE YOUR GREENS These are your superfoods; they give you lots of nutrients, fibre and energy. Your body craves nutrients not sugar - feed it what it needs and it will thank you for it. Remember, your ‘Super Four’: spinach, watercress, kale and broccoli.
6
DO YOGA OR MEDITATION Do you work hard all day; have kids, busy social life, so much to do and not enough time? Well, you need to unwind, find time to relax, or you will crash and burn. Yoga and meditation are simple, enjoyable ways to help switch off your brain and become relaxed. You can download an app called ‘digipill’ that has some meditation tracks that you can follow anything from 5-30 minutes.
7
SLEEP We all know the importance of sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours a night. This
8
HYDRATE If you are even slightly dehydrated, your body cannot function at its best. You need a minimum of 2-3litres a day; even more so if you drink alcohol, caffeine and exercise.
9
COOK FROM FRESH Instead of reaching for ready meals, cook from scratch and you will know exactly what is in your food and no surprises! Prepare food in advance to save time. It will taste even better.
10
LAUGH AND LOVE There’s no better medicine than this. Each day, show someone you love them and always try to smile. Release those happy hormones and embrace life! smile as your brain recognises the muscle change in your face and it will begin to release those happy hormones. CS

KEEP FIT, NOT INJURED! How to protect yourself from injury when exercising Do you remember to warm-up, stretch and cool down when you exercise?
It is a fact of life that people get injuries when they exercise but many are preventable and are often due to lack of a proper warm-up or stretching exercises. Inflexibility of muscles can contribute significantly to injury, so it’s important to work on this when you exercise, and make sure you do a proper warm-up and cool down as part of your workout. It’s also important not to increase the level of intensity of any workout too rapidly so that your body slowly adapts to the extra load that is put on it. Common injuries include: • Achilles tendonitis – when the tendon at the back of the ankle is overused,
inflammation and pain can occur • Groin strain – pain, swelling and sometimes even bruising on the inside of the thigh • Shin splints – when the muscles of the lower leg to the shin bone become inflamed from overuse • Lower back pain – this comes in many forms from slipped disks to back spasms, and sciatica • Hamstring pull – a pain or ache in the back of the thigh • Ankle sprain – pain in the ankle, with potentially lots of swelling, bruising and tenderness Remember, when you are injured it is always best to consult a medical expert. However, here are some helpful hints to help you steer clear of at least some of these common sports injuries.
with Jodie Molyneux Preventing Achilles tendonitis: Stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf muscles can help prevent injury to the Achilles tendon e.g. calf raises on the stairs both up on to your tip toes and down to stretch the calf. Prevention of a groin strain: As with most muscle pulls, the best way to prevent injury is stretching before exercising. Warm-up and gradually increase the intensity of the activity to help prevent injury.
Prevention of shin splints: To avoid shin splints it is best not to do too much too fast. Get some good trainers with good shock absorption and stretch properly before and after exercise. Running on softer ground can also help, as will exercises to strengthen the legs to take the pressure off the shin. Prevention of lower back pain: Some lower-back injuries cannot be prevented and are often down to just bad luck, but you can reduce the risk by warming up properly before exercising. Ensure you do core strengthening exercises as part of your workout.
Prevention of a hamstring pull: The chances of a hamstring injury occurring can be reduced with a proper warm-up and with a thorough stretching of the hamstrings. Prevention of ankle sprain: Wearing supportive shoes, taping your ankle or wearing an ankle support can help prevent sprains, but these measures in no way guarantee that you won't be injured if you fall hard or make a false movement. As the Easter holidays approach, I guarantee parents up and down the land will be driven to distraction by the sheer lack of common sense that seems to evade most teenagers. Appearances can be deceptive, because the brain of a teen isn’t always in sync with their (outwardly) grown-up appearance. But if you find yourself pulling your hair out in frustration, be reassured that they do mature eventually and take solace in knowing that the following characters successfully made it to adulthood (well kind of…) It was the age of FlashDance & “feel the burn aerobics” and Julietta felt her boring old gym kit just didn’t cut it anymore. With a purchase of silver footless tights and matching legwarmers, her new high cut turquoise leotard made the transformation to a Jane Fonda clone complete. Striding into the studio, MC Hammer blaring on the beat box, she noticed (but ignored) the snide glances coming her way. It was not until the class instructor quietly pointed out that the narrow thong of her leotard was supposed to go at the back and not at the front, that she understood the commotion. The camel toe was well and truly born. Or how about Beccalina, who in her teens worked for the quintessential luxury jewelers, Ratners. After a long day advising the masses on the merits of sovereign rings, she was bored and ready to party; but not before her final duty of the day: vacuuming the grubby velvet trays, which displayed the luxury £5 trinkets. Beccalina in her 17 year old wisdom reckoned the managers were
Why we need an age of common sense, and embarrassing episodes with tape measures….
being too fussy – why not just vacuum around the rings instead of removing them all first? One hour later, picking the gold from a vacuum bag of dust and filth, she conceded that perhaps the mangers had a point…. And then there was Helena. Having lost her purse and terrified of her mum’s reaction, did what any sane teenager would do in her situation. She dialed 999. But as the operator asked “Emergency – Which service do you require?”, she realised that helping her find her lost purse was probably not the best use of police time... But the top award for stupidity goes to myself. As a young trainee Manager with M&S, I had visions of glamorous and fast fashion (c’mon – it was the 80’s). Instead, stuck in a tiny menswear department in the Durham store, I spent my days looking at XL viyella shirt and polyester coats that crackled with static
when I walked past. One day, however, things were looking up. As a 6”2” rugby player walked in looking for a suit, I almost vaulted over the counter to assist him and his hunky frame. “Could I help?”, he asked. Indeed I could, but not before I’d measured his chest to be sure of his size. Moments later I was crestfallen; “I’m afraid there’s nothing on menswear that will fit you”, I said, “You’ll have to go to childrenswear since you’re a 32” chest. Readers, he was an ox of a man – did I not question my metrics? As he looked on in disbelief, my supervisor sidled over and reversed the tape measure – I’d started measuring from the wrong end. Red faced, I slunk back to my corner, and my (imminent) departure from M&S. Ah common sense; makes life a lot easier, but it certainly doesn’t give you as many laughs! CS

Don’t Forget Your Passport Kate Justice discusses the trials and tribulations of planning a holiday abroad Have you planned a summer holiday yet? Once the clocks change and the weather shifts, it is hard not to imagine yourself picking up a glorious tan while lying on a beach, reading and taking a break from work, housework and all the responsibilities that go with those. But I’ll warn you now (just in case someone else hasn’t); If you plan to leave the country… MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PASSPORT! And, if you plan to leave the country with any of your family, MAKE SURE THEY HAVE ONE, TOO! We recently booked a skiing holiday, so have just been through this traumatic memory lapse ahead of the summer sun. Children’s passports only last five years and so, if you have a ten year old son (as I do), the chances are he will just be on the way out of his second passport. You can’t get a child’s passport in one day either, forgoodnesssake, whowouldn’tknowthat...? After being ever so clever and getting pictures done and picking up forms, we thought we were ahead of the game and then promptly left the half filled in paperwork without a counter signature, which was collecting dust on the massive ‘to do’ pile in the kitchen sideboard. *breathe* I think husband thought I’d do it and I, of course, thought he would. I then embarked on the busiest week of the year at Cheltenham Races and completely forgot about it...until ten days before we were due to leave. A frantic search for, “Someone we’ve known for more than two years, are not related to, with a responsible enough job and their own British Passport”, ensued. Steve, the dentist neighbour was away on holiday himself; Rebecca the Magistrate hasn’t had a passport for twelve years and Daniel, the Airline Pilot, broke his wrist last week and can’t sign anything. Step forward; other school mum and

friend, Rachel, from the Police Control Room. The plan was then to drive to Newport with at least a week to go and submit the application in person, paying a hefty fee and guaranteeing the new document would arrive before our flight left. Of course, there were then no appointments available in Newport until it was TOO LATE. For one heart stopping minute, there were no appointments at all and I started agonisingly, calculating the cost of changing all our flights and weighing it up against the heart wrench and possible legal implications of leaving a ten year old home alone. (This was ONLY for a second). What if he and I followed on later? Could I maybe pack him into my carry-on? Or, what about asking my friend with a boat if we could smuggle him out of the country? Luckily it wouldn’t have to come to this – as finally, a free appointment was discovered in Liverpool the next day at
8:30am. With my work commitments, it meant Husband had to go; a six hour round trip, beginning at 5am. And, it was his birthday. Fortunately, Husband elected to make lemonade from the lemons he’d been dealt and had a grand day taking a ferry across the Mersey and going to the Cavern Club. I’d love to conclude that we’ve really learned our lesson. Honestly. Never again will we be caught with our pants down and paperwork in the kitchen sideboard instead of at the Passport Office. But I’m afraid I have to admit, with some embarrassment, that an incredibly similar story evolved roughly five years ago… and may indeed occur again when Will is 15. Oh, please remind me in 2019. Thank you. CS If you would like to share your stories about your pets with Kate Justice, please email the Editor at editor@stylemagazines.co.uk
