editor’s foreword

And so it begins! Not only The Olympics, but also our summer it would seem. As things hot up on both the sporting and the weather front (at least at the time of us going to press), we look ahead to the launch of Cheltenham Fashion Week with four pages of stylish Olympic fashion from page 88. Tickets are now on sale for what is set to be a fabulous event, launching on September 17th. I met up with local singer songwriter, George Montague, and discovered a little more about the quirky 21-year-old star. George is taking the music world by storm with his eclectic blend of musical genres and his debut album is now on general release. No stranger to playing live sets at Cheltenham Jazz Festival, amongst many others, George represents everything that is great about raw musical talent. Read the interview on page 18. Gloucester Quays Food Festival took place between July 20th-22nd and was a huge culinary success. TV chefs Gino D’Acampo, James Martin and Tom and Henry Herbert delighted crowds over the three-day event. Turn to page 150 to see some of the highlights from the weekend. Hop Skip and Jump Foundation, official charity of The Gloucester Quays Food Festival 2012, were also honored with a very special visit from the Archbishop of Canterbury the Rev. Rowan Williams as the charity celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the opening of the Hop Skip and Jump Cotswold Centre. We have two special features in this month’s issue. Read our school report on page 102, featuring comments from local schools and colleges and the story of their successes. And our 20-page wedding special begins on page 61 for any blushing brides looking for a little inspiration. Follow wedding planner, Sophie Taylor’s, top 5 tips to planning your big day and take a peek at a truly glamorous old Hollywood style wedding that she styled on page 68. Whether you desire the dress of your dreams, fabulous florals or heavenly hair, be inspired this month. I hope that you enjoy the issue and make the most of the glorious sunshine... fingers crossed! JUBILEE QUILT AND BUNTING AIRTHRIE SCHOOL A very loyal and patriotic grandmother, Mrs Edwina Cross, proposed that if art teachers were willing to direct the production of individual square craft portraits of The Queen, she would undertake the task of stitching them all together and producing a professional quilt.

Leading art teacher, Ms Dawn Niven worked tirelessly alongside form teachers, encouraging Airthrie pupils to design and make their own artistic interpretation of The Queen’s portrait. Each square was enhanced with ‘jewels and diamonds’ and the end product is both glamorous and intriguing. The onlooker can’t fail to appreciate the huge amount of care, attention and effort that went into the final result. Huge thanks to all who helped in this project. The quilt will be displayed both in school and at ‘The Darkness into Light’ art exhibition at Christ Church between 7th and 16th June. Our younger pupils were kept very busy on their own designs and have created some beautiful bunting which will be used to decorate Airthrie for our Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Curious about George? Local singer songwriter and musician, the phenomenally talented George Montague, talks to Emma Roberts about his musical journey to date… With over 2 million hits which came from just on YouTube and a first wanting to expand my album now on general writing. No diva demands on show here. really open with people, and using daft George was born in Surrey, but moved voices or pulling silly faces helps me to to Gloucestershire 12 years ago and so get that across”, he says, “ My greatest we’re claiming him as our own. Rockfield when I wanted to record as much of it ‘live on the floor’ as possible. That’s where my personality really comes across on the record, because I was working so hard solidly for those five days at Rockfield, but I was without doubt the happiest I had ever been. At Yellow Shark we laid down my vocals in two days – my voice was about three octaves lower for the rest of that week!” George performed at The Cheltenham Jazz Festival earlier this year and holds the event with particular affection. It was here in 2004 that he first saw Jamie Cullum play live and that AUGUST 2012

was the performance that encouraged him to explore the piano more. “There is a great wealth of talent and appreciation for that talent around the Cotswolds”, George enthuses, “Wychwood Festival was amazing to play, as was Nibley. We recently played a two-hour gig at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester and that really was just like being told that you can have the whole playground to yourself for as long as you like!” The rising star has fans across the world, from London to LA, and it’s easy to see why. He is a musician in the truest

sense of the word, not a Karaoke star, and a talented one at that. I foresee big things for Mr Montague, but where does the man himself hope to be in the next 12 months? “I could dance around this question for ages saying I want to be doing this and that, but honestly my three main goals are to have played live on Later with Jools Holland, have album number two recorded and be on a US/world tour!” He laughs, but I have a feeling he’ll make all three happen. The Park Cheltenham Setting the scene: Clarendon is an elegant Grade II listed Georgian villa arranged over four floors with beautiful proportions and fine period features. The property, situated in one of Cheltenham’s finest locations, enjoys ample parking, garaging and manicured enclosed gardens. Why we love it: Dating circa 1834-1838, Clarendon is one of the original villas on The Park. The property has an immediate feeling of elegance with the accommodation being synonymous with the era. Leading off the hallway the beautifully proportioned formal drawing room runs from the front to the rear of the house and benefits from a dual aspect making it a wonderfully light room. On the opposite side of the hallway, a formal dining room focuses on a marble fireplace. Overlooking the garden to the rear of the house, the kitchen opens into a breakfast/family area with French doors opening onto the garden. The lower ground floor has previously been used as a self-contained apartment and could be once more if desired. The original stone staircase leads down from the ground floor to a second sitting room or guest suite with shower room, a further guest bedroom and a study. The first and second floors comprise the master bedroom suite, three double bedrooms, a further single bedroom and two well-proportioned bathrooms. Lansdown Road Cheltenham Setting the scene: A wonderfully proportioned and beautifully presented first floor apartment with parking and communal gardens, set within a handsome semi-detached building in Lansdown, 800 meters from Montpellier. Why we love it: Set back from Lansdown Road, occupying the entire first floor of this handsome semi-detached building, this wellproportioned apartment has recently undergone a thorough and very tasteful refurbishment. A lift from the communal reception hall on the ground floor leads directly into the apartment where a stone tiled floor leads through to a well-appointed kitchen/dining room. The drawing room focuses on an impressive granite fireplace with a gas fire inset. A large picture window overlooks the communal gardens to the rear of the building. The master bedroom has use of a luxury en suite bathroom and a guest shower room serves two further bedrooms. Outside, the apartment has allocated parking to the front of the building and an attractive enclosed communal garden at the rear. The property is being sold with private shed storage set in the corner of the garden. hot property Lower Farm House Cheltenham Setting the scene: Lower Farm House is a comfortable detached family home offering particularly well proportioned and spacious accommodation laid out over two floors. Constructed in Cotswold stone and brick under a tiled roof, with double glazing, the property underwent a major renovation and refurbishment programme just under ten years ago. Whilst the outbuildings are particularly suited to equestrian use they offer a variety of other possibilities subject to any necessary consents being obtained. Why we love it: Lower Farm House is situated at the end of an unmade track on the outskirts of the village of Bishops Cleeve, away from passing traffic and just three miles north of Cheltenham. Local amenities include two Primary Schools and a secondary school in the village, several local pubs, a Church, a comprehensive range of local shops and supermarket, sports and healthcare facilities. Further educational, shopping and leisure amenities will be found in Cheltenham. The area also offers easy access for the centres of Gloucester and Tewkesbury and the M5. hot property Leckhampton Cheltenham Setting the scene: A substantial semi-detached period house extended to both the lower and ground floor and offering the opportunity for further improvements. Why we love it: Ideally located moments from the desirable amenities of the Leckhampton shopping district, this fabulous semi-detached family house is spaciously arranged over three floors and offers well-balanced accommodation with period features. The property has been extended to both the lower and ground floor increasing its already good- sized accommodation and providing the opportunity for a basement flat separate from the main accommodation. To the raised ground floor is an entrance hall, cloakroom, two formal reception rooms and a fitted kitchen with access to both a breakfast and dining room. The lower ground floor is accessed by a staircase from the kitchen and provides a garden room with folding doors into the garden, study, work room, utility room, cloakroom and a store room. Sydenham Villas Cheltenham Setting the scene: A substantial detached Victorian villa, with lovely-proportioned accommodation, situated in a tree-lined avenue a short walk to both Sandford Park and the town centre. Why we love it: Glenroy House is believed to date back to c.1870 and is a substantial detached Victorian villa, having rendered and painted elevations, with deep sash windows, under a pitched and slate-covered roof. Internally the accommodation is beautifully proportioned whilst retaining a wealth of character. Having been retained under the same ownership for over 30 years the property has been well-maintained and looked after but would probably benefit from updating in parts. To the ground floor is a reception hall, 2 principle reception rooms, kitchen, utility and a garden room. Over the upper floors are 7 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The lower ground floor provides a living room, 2 bedrooms (1 en suite), kitchen and bathroom. Outside there are attractive grounds and a detached double garage. The abundance of natural light is a rare commodity in period villas however the bright, light airy ambiance offered in Glenroy House is noticeable regardless of weather. From the top floor an unrestricted vista awaits over the east and south Cheltenham skyline. Guide Price: ÂŁ1,275,000; Details: Read Maurice; Tel: 01242 241122 www.readmaurice.co.uk AUGUST 2012

property advice

Eric Barton takes a look at local builders’ merchants Staverton Building Supplies

For more info Tel: 01452 712108 or email – mark@stavertonbuildingsupplies.co.uk

Six years ago Mark Hanks and his business partner, Mansell Husselbee set up Staverton Building Supplies. This new business was born from their years of experience in the landscaping and building trade. This allowed customers old and new to enjoy the level of service they had enjoyed before. Staverton Building Supplies is situated just by Gloucestershire Airport on the Meteor Business Park. It’s a tip-top location for Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury and only a stone’s throw from the M5. The shop itself is absolutely full to the brim with over seven thousand product lines. There’s everything from decorating materials through to door furniture, hand and power tools, mouldings and fixings. It’s a veritable treasure-trove of products – an Aladdin’s Cave. Mansell comments, ‘we are very particular in our AUGUST 2012

choice of products. Providing the best quality at the best price is what we do’. The outside yard area (which sits in over an acre) showcases the decking and fencing, together with an incredible landscaping and patio display area. The display section features sandstone imported from India, slate imported from Mongolia, and all manner of stone edgings and decorative gravel and chippings. This whole area allows you to visualise your build or garden project. Every member of staff is extremely knowledgeable and are all on hand to advise and assist at every stage of every purchase. Mark further comments,’ we always aim to provide a very personal service and take enormous pride in being flexible and reliable in the way that we do business. We treat our customers the way we would like to be treated’.

They operate a local delivery service and will also happily split loads and do refunds on stock lines, which is a great bonus if you’ve over – ordered. The landscaping side of Staverton Building Supplies accounts for around 40 per cent of the sales and they’ve got a customer database of over two thousand which includes builders, retail customers and hotels, schools etc. This really is a one- stop- shop and it’s right on the doorstep. Mark finally comments, ‘I take great delight in seeing customers smile and leaving here with the right products at the right price. It’s all about customer satisfaction and providing a pleasant purchasing experience for all’. So if you’ve got the landscaping/DIY bug or are in need of building supplies, then you’d be far stretched to beat the Pandora’s Box that is Staverton Building Supplies. CS

Create the perfect colour scheme...

PATSY HOLDSWORTH, OF FORUM INTERIOR DESIGN IN CIRENCESTER, SHOWS YOU HOW TO CREATE A COLOUR PALETTE TO MAKE THE VERY BEST OF YOUR HOME.

Forum Interior Design 20 West Way Cirencester GL7 1JA 01285 642 282 www.foruminteriors.co.uk AUGUST 2012

We spend all day here at the showroom helping customers put Farrow & Ball colour schemes together but you don’t need to be an Interior Designer to achieve your perfect look. Here are a few guidelines which may help you make the right choice for your home: Before committing to colour, consider the amount and direction of light in the room, as well as the architecture, purpose and shape of the space that you are intending to decorate. Start with the hallway and find a colour that feels comfortable for you. This will set the tone for the rest of the house and create a natural flow from room to room. By using a darker colour in the hallway, you will automatically make the rooms leading off the hall seem much brighter and bigger. Farrow & Ball neutrals are far from impartial and never boring. We love to create colour schemes in neutral shades. Playing around with light and dark tones can give a really interesting and elegant look, in either a traditional or a contemporary palette. A great way to create light and space is to use the lightest colour on the walls and a darker tone on the woodwork. The use of a dark colour on skirting boards in particular will make everything above

seem much lighter in contrast. Dark colours also work well to pick out interesting architectural features such as window frames, banisters or recesses. Using the same colour on walls and woodwork creates a clean, strong and calm look. It will exaggerate the size of the space as there are no contrasts to draw the eye. This works well too if you have a lovely view outside your windows. To create more ceiling height, it helps to use the same colour on the walls, skirting and coving as the walls will then appear taller. Contrary to popular belief, a brilliant white ceiling will actually make the room appear smaller. Use a sympathetic colour on the ceiling so that your eye is then less aware of line around the top of the room. In order to make the best of that small, dark room, try to resist the natural urge to paint it a bright white. Instead, use a warm or dark colour, or opt for a bold wallpaper, to create a dramatic, yet intimate atmosphere. The most important thing to remember is that it is your home, so go with the colours that you love. If you need any help, please do come over to our showroom in Cirencester for a coffee and lots of advice or book a Farrow & Ball colour consultation at home. CS

holidays are here with Jon Hodder

Head Gardener at Sudeley Castle, Jon Hodder, gives an insight into summer holiday season in the grounds Photograph Xander Casey August: the holiday month. For those of us not involved with school or teaching it is a glorious period, when the morning commute flows and much of the traffic one sees is people on holiday. The beauty of working at Sudeley Castle is the daily presence of visitors in the gardens who are generally in a holiday mood. This has the effect of setting their minds at ease and temporarily freeing them from their dayto-day cares. Most of their comments are kindly, and we find that many are surprised when we tell them that there are only four and a half gardeners in the team. “Four and a half ?” Quite so: one of the girls is employed on a permanent part-time basis. We have a lot of families visit us during this period, and many of the children enjoy rolling down the grassy banks at the back of the Queens garden.

AUGUST 2012

There is also a certain amount of chasing through the double yew hedges. The dads invariably undertake this and on a busy day the shrieks of delighted children fill the air. It is good to see the garden so full of life, but the old hedges need treating with a certain amount of respect. They may appear to be big and solid, but the fabric of their branches, which forms the 'walls' of the hedges, is susceptible to damage. For their sake, we ask that our energetic visitors only use the openings that are already there. We will begin the task of trimming our hedges this month. Their mass engenders stoicism in the toiling gardener. In a good year, whilst also undertaking other gardening tasks, we would hope to finish trimming by Christmas. The amount of hedging at the Castle is deceptive. The real heart of the task is trimming the tops of the double yew hedges, each one of which is about ten feet wide. The Katherine Parr Festival continues, and I’m looking forward to a talk about the Tudor composer Thomas Tallis on the 20th. Tim Porter will be giving the talk, which promises to be an interesting address about a fascinating composer. Tallis trod an interesting path through a turbulent period of history, but his music is able to create a transcendent feeling of otherworldly calm. The grass growth has begun to display signs of slowing, and here and there some farmers have been able to cut and gather hay. The want of a few clear days

has hampered things this year, and I wonder about the future price of a bale come the winter. A meadow near to where I live flooded earlier in the summer, washing out the breeding skylarks. It may appear to us as a disaster, but we must remember that some grassland is liable to flooding and has done so for many centuries. The community of wildlife that inhabits the meadow is able to recover. Some weeks have passed since the moistening, and once again the larks are pouring out their familiar celebration of high summer. As for August gardening tasks, it probably doesn't need me to encourage you to dead-head your roses. What you can do is apply a little blood fish and bone after the first flush of flowering, just to help things along. Cut out any rough and dead looking pieces while you are there. Then your roses should reward you with further flowering and a bit of new growth, which will be able to harden off fully before the winter. CS Check the website for full details of Queen Katherine Parr Quincentenary Festival which includesTudor Family Fun Days, literary and historical talks and events, www.sudeleycastle.co.uk or call 01242 602308. DAISY WITH A DIFFERENCE! with Camilla Bassett-Smith

Gloucestershire Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has a Chelsea Gold Medal and was part of the production team for BBC Gardeners’ World. She has just finished working as horticultural consultant on BBC programme ‘The Flowerpot Gang’ which debuts this month. Here she spends a summer evening with a cone and flake in one hand and a purple coneflower in the other…

AUGUST 2012

As we welcome August, we often say goodbye to many of our perennials which have seen their best and now bid us adieu until next year, however among the few who shine as the summer comes to an end is the purple coneflower, or Echinacea. Many will know this as the celebrated cold remedy, more about that later, but as a border plant these long flowering, spectacular tall daises are a late summer delight. A member of the Aster family, this plant has increased in popularity as prairie style planting has become fashionable thanks to the work of Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf. Plant with grasses and achilleas to achieve bold drifts. A visit to RHS Wisley offers perfect displays of a vast array of Echinacea including Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus’, which holds an award of garden merit, and boasts dark pink petals surrounding a burnt orange centre. There are nine species of Echinacea which originate in North America, but despite being known as the purple coneflower, these perennials are also available in other colours including white, yellow and pink! A recent introduction ‘Coconut Lime’ has, according to Cotswold Garden Flowers, “double greyflecked lime green flowers” and will brighten your garden as the nights draw in. In my opinion, their double cones bare a striking resemblance to an inverted high quality lavatory cleaning brush! Each flower contains a central cone which is prickly and scented, and butterflies and bees adore this nectar and pollen-rich feast. The prickly nature of the cone is echoed in the name Echinacea, which is taken from the Greek word meaning hedgehog or sea urchin.

The claims of this plant’s health benefits are nothing new, with Native American Indians apparently using Echinacea to cure many ills including toothache, burns, sore throats and snakebites. Between the late 19th Century and the 1920s, it was one of the most widely prescribed medical plants in America. Falling out of favour with the introduction of modern anti-biotics, it has in recent decades grown in popularity as one of the best known herbal medicines. It It is said to help fight off infection by stimulating the immune system, but there is controversy over these beliefs. Some reports have claimed that by taking Echinacea, chances of developing a cold can be cut by 30-60%, but other reports show no beneficial effect. Recently an Australian study suggested that taking Echinacea tablets may half the number of travellers who suffer from respiratory problems following long-haul flights. The Indians apparently used Echinacea juice to make parts of their bodies insensitive to heat, when walking on hot coals or eating fire in ceremonies. Maybe friends of mine could have tested this at a Gloucestershire County Association for the Blind fire walk in Cheltenham a few years ago! Modern breeding has concentrated on introducing plants with less reflexed petals, and also cultivars of a more compact nature, but whichever you chose to grow, pick a sunny, well drained site for best results. Finally, don’t be tempted to chop down spent blooms, you can be just too tidy! Leave the seed heads to provide a winter treat for your feathered friends and add architectural interest to your winter garden. CS

How to plan your

wedding style

BE ORGANISED Organising a wedding while remaining busy with work and life in general can be a little stressful (to say the least). The foundation for any successful wedding is for couples to have a support team. Trusted friends and advisors are not only essential for creating a beautiful wedding, but will also keep you sane! Buy a notebook as soon as you can; this will become your bible. Write down everything, and you won’t go far wrong! There will be a lot to think about and so seek help and advice. It’s easy to forget about the actual running of the day, you may have organised and bought everything for the wedding but have nobody to greet suppliers or dress tables. If you plan on being hands-on and organising the entire wedding, I would still recommend hiring a wedding planner for the last few weeks, especially the big day. This means you and your nearest and dearest can fully enjoy this time, knowing that everything is taken care of.

wedding

1

TIME As with any event, time is so important. Give yourself enough time to organise your wedding. Set your date and book the church and/or venue . Then give yourself a realistic timeline complete with a checklist of when to send out invitations, when to confirm suppliers etc. Many bridal magazines have generic planners for you to fill in. Invite your guests in good time; consider sending ‘Save the Date’ cards to give guests as much notice as possible to book your wedding in the diary! On the day of your wedding the time will fly! Make sure to stop, take it all in and enjoy the moment with your partner - you'll want to remember the day for a lifetime to come.

2

AUGUST 2012

Don’t feel overwhel med by the endless options available to you. Follow these 5 top tips from Wedding Plan ner, Sophie Taylor, and feel cool, calm and colle cted ahead of your big day… BUDGET When setting your wedding budget, match expenditure with priority. Think about what is most important to you… a £500 pair of shoes or a few more familiar faces seated at the Wedding Breakfast! Research suppliers, item costs and alternative solutions. Compare high, low and middle of the road alternatives before setting absolute values to your budget. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of the honeymoon. If you can’t afford your dream holiday, use a site like www.honeyfund.co.uk as an alternative to a gift list. Budgeting is where a good wedding planner is invaluable and can save you time and money in the long run. They will have a little black book of trusted suppliers to suit every budget and reliability is not something you want to put to the test on the big day. As well as an artillery of cost-cutting tricks up her sleeve (ahem). Once you have worked out your main expenses, leave yourself a small, running budget for all the little extras that can sneak up on you.

3

THEME Having a theme to your wedding allows you to add personality to the proceedings. A theme can also make the planning easier and the decision making a litle smoother. Start with making mood boards of potential looks with your partner. At this stage, my job is to give creative and practical suggestion whilst a theme unfolds and then later make the clients ideas a reality. Once you have defined your theme, even if it is just a colour palette, be sure to stick to it; from flowers to stationery. Being consistent with your theme will give greater impact and will also help early on with budgeting.

4

ALL ABOUT YOU Don’t try to please everyone, this is your day and it should be everything you’ve dreamed of. This is an exciting time for family and friends but too often even the most well-meaning may become heavyhanded with their demands. Don’t alienate people, but try to find a balance between taking on the advice of others and sticking to your guns. This day is about you and your partner, communicate with one other and work as a team when making decisions about your wedding day. Take time out throughout the process to relax and refocus. Make time to talk about other things in your life, not just the wedding. Remember why you’re getting married. Your wedding day will soon be here for you to celebrate! CS

All things ‘bride’ and beautiful Words Lesha Chaplin-Park Photographs Gayna Tapper www.sarafayphotography.com

This year’s remake of ‘The Great Gatsby’ has seen a flurry of vintage trends on the red carpet. From the Marcel curl of the roaring twenties, to the old school Hollywood pin curled glamour of Rita Hayworth, one thing is clear – Style never goes out of fashion.

GET THE

L

This style is great for fine hair, providing the correct products are used.To begin, apply Mousse Forte by Wella to washed hair to create volume before blow drying into large ‘Chelsea Curls’, (think Kate Middleton curls.) Then crimp the hair at the roots to help shape the style and give the required width. To create the modern Marcel curl (otherwise known as ‘Summer Waves’,) use GHD Straighteners to straighten each section, curl under, and then bend back on itself. Repeat the process, and when the entire hair is curled, shape into finger waves, then with each section and clip in place until ready to go. Finally use a back combing technique with the fingers to define the shape and finish with a spray of Wella’s Shine Define and Shaper Fierce Spray.

“Bridal hair has come a long way from the predictable French pleat and ringlets favoured in the 1980’s.” says award winning hairdresser Lisa Wilde of Francesco Group Cheltenham. “Brides are now happy to experiment and push the boundaries, but the key is to create a look that stands the test of time” A vintage style will tick that box

beautifully - almost a century on and we are still looking to it for inspiration. “Of course one doesn’t have to go the whole hog with vintage.” Says Jed Magadia “A simple ‘nod’ to the era with classic hair and vintage accessories will add a dash of glamour to a traditional theme. It’s about making it work for you. When it comes to your wedding, there really are no rules.”

These styles work on both European and afro hair. Prewash the hair using hydrate detangling shampoo and a moisturising conditioner by Keracare. Then blow dry the hair using a medium sized barrel brush. Starting underneath the hair, take small sections, and using a large barrel tong, curl the hair and set each curl with a pin curl clip. As you move towards the front of the head, curl the hair towards the face to create the ultimate 1940's loose wave. Once all of the hair is curled and set, spray with Keracare Medium Hold Finishing Spray and leave for 15 minutes to cool. After removing the clips, brush the curl with a soft bristle brush and tease into place with the fingers. Finish the look using Silken Seal Shine Spray.

The above style can be transformed effortlessly into a side bun for a very different ‘evening reception’ look. Simply bring the hair to one side and split into three sections. Take the middle section and place through a ‘hair donut’ (a donut shaped hair piece used to add padding.) Backcomb the hair that has been placed through the donut, and secure the hair around it, ensuring all of the padding is hidden. Take the remaining two sections of hair, back comb slightly and loosely incorporate them around the donut to add volume then pin into place. Spray with Keracare Medium Strength Finishing Spray to finish.

This style works well on long thick hair. Start by prewashing the hair and blow drying using a large barrel brush to create maximum volume. Then take a section of hair at the back and gently backcomb to create a nice rounded shape and secure with pins and spray with Wella Professional Hairspray. Next, take a second section from the crown of the head and gently backcomb to create height, and smooth over to create shape. Bring in the side sections of the hair, smooth and curl to finish the look. Spritz with Wella Shine Spray and Wella Professional Hairspray to enhance the look and ensure it stays put all day. AUGUST 2012

Weddings are guaranteed to elicit a mixture of emotions from me. Now before I elaborate, there is perhaps one key thing you should bear in mind; I am not married. I am with who I believe to be my life partner, yet thirteen years, two children and one mortgage in to our relationship we have never felt the urge to walk down the aisle and legally alter our status in front of the eyes of witnesses. I’m not exactly sure I can tell you why either. I could argue that the waning influence of the church in our society or the increase in divorce rates have helped turn me off the institution, but I think the simpler truth is that neither of us have ever felt the need. Therefore I have no experience of being a groom, or even a best man. However, a large family with eight siblings, seven of which are or have been married, and a large circle of friends means I am as experienced as they come when it comes to being a guest. So, back to the emotions I feel when the invitation drops on to the doormat (or even a ‘keep the date free’ card, a new invention I recently received from a niece who is making plans far into the future). Firstly, delight. I may not be married myself, but I have no negative feelings towards the concept of marriage or being married. Hence it is a heart warming feeling to know that two acquaintances feel a strength of emotion towards one another that they feel the

need to publically, in the eyes of God or the state, make a pledge of future togetherness. Secondly, I must confess an element of curiosity usually arises. Why have they decided to do this now, what does the thought process that leads to a proposal feel like, and as I am nosey by nature, how much will this cost them? And finally, a wedding invite makes me feel hope. Practically, I hope the organisation, the day itself and the future relationship all transpire in a way that the couple hope for themselves, and in a greater overall sense I am filled with hope because if two people love each other enough to embark upon this type of journey together then humanity must be doing something right. Happy then, perhaps best sums up how I feel, and hopefully that is how all your guests will feel towards your news. Remember a wedding is your day, with you being the most important person and your happiness on the day will help your guests relax and have a good time. Just one personal request for any future brides or grooms that may be honouring me with an invite to their nuptials in the future, be explicit in telling me the rules. Don’t leave me guessing, I like a dress code, a wedding list and exact instructions where to stand, sit, eat and perhaps even sleep. Do these things and I will enjoy your day almost as much as you! A flawless finish for brides with Amazing hair and makeup play a major part in making the bride look and feel special on her big day. At Laura Leigh Hairdressing we appreciate what an important decision this is and how stressful it can be, but rest assured you will be in very capable hands Professional hairstylist Laura Leigh offers top tips and the hottest trends for 2012

• Book a consultation for your hair three to six months in advance of your wedding, this allows the stylist to assess your hair and recommend the best treatments and advice to get your hair in the best possible condition and shape ready for the big day. • Before the big day we recommend frequently using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner as well as treating yourself to a monthly in salon deep conditioning treatment, this will help condition the hair and will ensure your hair looks healthy and glossy.

• Plan your cut and colour appointments so that your last visit to the salon is one week before the day. Make sure that you have your hair trimmed regularly to prevent split ends and any breakage. • It is a good idea to start looking at websites and magazines for ideas before you meet your stylist, pick out styles that you like and feel will suit your hair type and that will compliment your dress. It will give the stylist something to work with. It is also good to bring along

pictures of the dress and ideas of the kind of accessories you would like to use.

The hottest trends for brides in 2012… we have a wedding hairstyle to suit every type of bride

Vintage style brides This is one of our favourite looks for 2012. Vintage styled hair has a youthful yet glamorous appeal especially when paired with vintage accessories and bold lips.. The style needs to be worn with a vintage or antique styled gown or the effect will be lost. Look for bird cage style veils embellished antique combs or pearls to complete the look.

Classic brides We can’t mention bridal hair without talking about the classic chignon. They are as modern as they are timeless and will always be fashionable in the wedding world. They can be worn loose or sleek. The more fashion conscious bride can wear it high on top of the head for a ‘straight off the catwalk’ look. Finish the look off perfectly with a classic full length veil, flowers, or

embellished hair pins. If you prefer to wear your hair down go for a big bouncy blowdry. It’s an elegant hairstyle that doesn’t require too much effort or fuss.

The natural bride The perfect style to compliment this look is the ‘wave’ loose relaxed curves in the hair that are effortlessly chic and made to look like the bride created them herself Depending on the hair type this style only requires a blowdry and a slight curl created with an iron or curling wand. The hair should be separated using a large brush or your fingers to create the perfect tousled look. If you prefer a more bohemian look add braids or twists. Braids are huge on the catwalk this year. Pretty plaits or twists that swoop around the head or playfully cascade down the neck ooze femininity. Accessorise with flowers head bands or feathers. At Laura Leigh Hairdressing we have developed unique packages so that the bride can receive the best possible service for her special day. The packages have been created to provide the bride with the flexibility she needs, peace of mind and pure indulgence. AUGUST 2012

Blushes share the secrets of their success...

OUR OUTSTANDING SALON EXPERIENCE IS WHAT KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK.... Blushes are renowned in the hairdressing world for being one of the most successful salon groups in the country and people often ask us ‘whats the secret?’. We think its time to share that secret with the rest of the hairdressing industry... hence being in the grand finals of the UK'S most prestigious hairdressing business awards... CREATIVE HEAD MAGAZINES MOST WANTED... as finalists in the ‘Best Salon Experience’ category.... simple things like treating every single client as an individual and looking at their whole image. Cofounder Mark Blake says “your hair should be a reflection of who you are and also who you would like to be”. There’s so much more to a hair salon these days than just cutting and colouring it's about the whole client journey. Our specialist team of hairdressers is what makes the difference.... take Laura Cambridge Manager of our Cheltenham salon as an example.... Friendly, intelligent, caring, genuine, efficient and much more (and she’s young and beautiful).... For me she personifies the Blushes brand says cofounder Darrell Blake.

WE KNOW ABOUT HAIRSTYLES OF THE MOMENT.... Because of our work on fashion shoots for many of the UK'S leading consumer magazines. We know what works because we’ve usually just styled it on a shoot for YOU magazine, Grazia, Red, Easy Living or one of the leading UK glossies. When your team are fresh off a shoot for one of next seasons leading fashion trends you know what the looks of the moment are and so they are easy to replicate in the salon. We can tell you that following the sad loss of Vidal Sassoon that there is definitely a nod back to the ‘sassoon way’ look out for strong definitive hair styles.... big bold statements.... think Jesse J .... proper hairstyles return!! AUGUST 2012

WE SHARE OUR HAIR TIPS AND ADVICE

FEED YOUR HAIR Hair is made up of between 6595% protein, the high protein content of both hair and scalp demand that an adequate supply of protein in the diet is consumed on a daily basis. Some protein should be eaten with every meal to help feed your hairs needs. Breakfast is possibly the most important meal as the body may have been without nourishment for up to 12 hours after the overnight starvation period. WE KNOW THAT YUKO IS THE ONLY STRAIGHTENING SOLUTION FOR LONG TERM DEAD STRAIGHT AND FRIZZ FREE HAIR.... Blushes are always leaders in providing what our clients are asking for.... in response to the backlash on everyday straightening (I'm afraid even with protection sprays there is always hair breakage) we are now providing PERMANENT STRAIGHT HAIR WITHOUT THE HEAT DAMAGE CAUSED BY EXTENSIVE USE OF STRAIGHTENING IRONS. After extensive research we know that YUKO is the only system that really is proven to radically and permanently straighten hair. Usually straightening carries a great risk of permanent damage.... YUKO simply defies all risk of damage and actually strengthens and conditions hair while it straightens. The only catch is you are paying for the very best in Japanese excellence.... you will have poker straight hair for the length of its life and the price ultimately reflects that. Yuko straightening system is ONLY available at BLUSHES Cirencester Branch please call 01285656091 for details and pricing structures. CS

SUMMER SUN BAKES YOUR HAIR TO DEATH! Im loath to mention the sun in the current continual torrential conditions but just a gentle reminder for those of you going in search of the large yellow one this summer.... If you leave a cake in the oven for too long it will shrink, burn, crack eventually disintegrate .. your hair’s not so different!! Lie in the sun with no protection for too long and you’ll get the same result. Every year we warn our clients and although this year you won’t catch a glimpse of any sun unless you jump on a plane you have to take note – protect your hair or watch the results! L'Oreal Solar Sublime conditioning spray £14-90 is a spray and forget sun protector ideal for sun bathing. Remember too that Blushes salons are one of the few salons that now stock the hugely successful PUREOLOGY range of products exclusively designed for coloured hair, designed to retain your hair colour. www.blushes.co.uk

Fashion forward

CHELTENHAM FASHION WEEK 17th-21st September 2012

We are in the final stages of our planning now, hurray! Tickets are now on sale from our website www.cheltenhamfestivals.co.uk

One of our priorities is giving opportunities to young people to get involved in Cheltenham Fashion Week by showcasing their designs and attending one of our career talks. With this in mind we have created our Student Education Show on Tuesday 18th September which will run alongside a series of educational and inspiring discussions with fashion professionals. The response from schools for this show has been fantastic, our Schools, Colleges & Universities are already making & creating Fashion – and our Catwalk Show will give them an opportunity to show off their work. The myriad of styles will take us from the grass roots of creativity starting with children as young as 7 years of age creating their first paper body covering, to secondary school teenagers experimenting with sewing machines, through to the fully fledged graduate starting their career in the Fashion Industries... There are sensational prizes to be won including work placements, a styling day out, plus cash for schools - all made possible by our lead sponsors for this event GC, and George Davies, the style visionary who founded Next, George at Asda and Per Una at Marks & Spencer. Fashion is something that interests everyone, and of course with something that popular comes a lot of competition to get into it. Hence another reason why we aim to give our young people an opportunity to get involved in the event side of our events, allowing them the

AUGUST 2012

health

This month, Dr Vicky Blackburn, shares her health advice for teenagers...

with Dr Vicky Blackburn I remember my teenage years with clarity: that juxtaposition of cocky confidence and crushing insecurity. The tempers and the tears. I remember being collected from school and my mother asking me what I had been up to, and saying ‘nothing’, or worse. Suddenly my daughter is doing the same to me! I was beginning to dread the teenage years, having had friends ‘warn me’ about what was to come. Then I had a chat with my mother, who despite my sulky disposition said that she found the teenage years ‘ the most rewarding’. When I asked her why, she said it was because she could enjoy doing more things with us, without the worry and stress of smaller children. She also said that it was great fun watching our opinions and personalities forming. Well, we shall see. One other tip regarding teenagers, is not to forget that they still need their parents. They may be rude, and insulting and unpredictable, but they still need the emotional and physical support of a parent. So even if they fail to respond: please keep asking the questions! Teenagers need to know that no matter how hard they push, that you will still ‘be there’ for them, and love them. All sounds like having a toddler again, doesn’t it? This month’s questions focus on common teenage questions that I have been asked.

Q

BREAST DEVELOPMENT Dear Doctor, I am concerned that my breasts are weird! I am 13 and have one breast larger than the other! I have not noticed this problem in other girls, and I am too embarassed to ask my friends if they are the same. Am I abnormal? Thanks for your brave letter! You are not abnormal! A large number of women have breasts that are different sizes, and at 13years old, you are not yet ‘fully’ developed, so things may change further.

A

AUGUST 2012

If, once you reach 18 or 19 years old you still notice a size difference, and it is upsetting for you, then speak to your GP. Occassionally a breast reduction to one breast (or implant in another) will ‘equal things out. In the meantime, do not worry.

Q

STRETCH MARKS Dear Doctor, I have noticed over the last 6 months that I have stripes around my tummy and thighs. They are red and angry, sometimes itch, but are not painful. They look horrible. What are they and will they go? These sound like stretch marks. Similar to those in pregnancy, they form on the belly, or thighs when there is fast growth under the control of hormones. They sound very normal, and are there because you are likely to have had a growth spirt. They will not vanish, but will fade dramatically over a few months- going from red/brown ‘stripes’ to silvery ‘slithers’. They will be barely noticable once you are ‘fully grown’. Very rarely, a disproportionate increasing girth around the tummy, with stretch marks can be a sign of a hormonal disorder, or the marks can be associated with taking medications ( such as steroids). If you are not sure if this applies to you, speak to your GP.

A

Q

SHORT STATURE Dear Doctor, I am a 14year old boy who is significantly smaller than the rest of my class. I look like I am still at Primary School, whilst some of my friends look like they are about to start University!! My Dad is quite small (5ft 8inches), but my Mum and her family are all tall (over 6ft!). My Mum says that I will grow when I am older. Is she right? Thanks for your questions. The answer is ‘yes: you will probably grow fine!’ But without seeing you, assessing your growth and plotting the height of your parents on a chart, it is difficult to predict your ‘final’ height. Short stature can run in families, but as neither of your parents is ‘abnormally’ short, this is unlikely.

A

Unlike girls, who tend to grow gradually, boys tend to have a second growth phase in their later teens. It may be worth asking your Dad if this was the case for him. It is certainly worth you seeing your GP and asking their advice. Your GP will listen to your worries, and examine you. The will be able to monitor your weight and height. If you have a growth ‘problem’ this can be monitored and if necessary you can be referred to a growth specialist. Growth problems can be treated (with hormones) if necessary.

Q

INFECTED TOES Dear Doctor, I keep getting red and inflamed toes, my doctor says it is the nails- I have required antibiotics for this. Is there anything that I can do to prevent these infections from coming? Thanks for your letter. Infected toes from in-growing toe nails are very common in teenage years, especially amongst sporty boys! Infections thrive in sweaty socks and smelly trainers! It is important to keep your toenails short, and cut them straight (not curved) to minimise the chance of the edges splintering. It is a splintered edge, piercing the skin at the sides of the nail, that causes infection. If you are prone to these infection try and was your feet every evening, once home from work or school. Then wear flip flops around the house to let air get to your feet. Wear clean cotton socks everyday as cotton allows the skin to breathe. Once infection starts- speak to your GP promptly as early antibiotics work very effectively. Occasionally troublesome toe nails are surgically removed.

ART COUTURE PAINSWICK

An estimated 10, 000 visitors flocked to picturesque Painswick for the Art Couture Festival on July 15th. Artist, Lorraine Taylor, won second place in the body painting competition, with this wonderful work of art. Lorraine says: “The name of this piece is Eureka, and the theme of the body paint competition was ‘Celebrating Britain’. My inspiration was British Inventors. So I used the cogs to represent clock making and the eye piece was the iris of a camera. I used film and photography, the computer, cat’s eyes and fingerprinting, and then the kaleidoscope and mass production of stockings. My model was Jo Paul and my assistant was Simon Smith. We were delighted to win 2nd place in the competition.” All In The Image www.allintheimage.co.uk and Ben Roberts www.bloomingphotography.co.uk

Wycliffe College Athletics success

Following Year 7 pupil, Holly Bank’s recent success during the X-C season and in the Severnside Athletics, Holly entered the Mercia Prep School Athletics Championships at Radley College on Friday 15th June to compete in the 800m and High-Jump. These are the qualifiers for the National Prep School Athletics in July. Despite the appalling weather, Holly was 2nd in the High –Jump with 1m25 but went one better in the 800m and won in a time of 2.29m – she then went represent Wycliffe at the National Finals in Birmingham on July 2nd. In the national finals, Holly competed in the 800m. In appalling weather (that had caused the cancellation of our Inter House Athletics) Holly was pushed hard in a close race but won to become IAPS National 800m Champion.

Big success for student publiaction

Dean Close School’s student publication, THE QUAD, has won a National Award for Best Feature Article at the Shine School Media Awards 2012. Sixth Former, Sam Prance, won the prize for his piece on homophobia in schools. The citation was read out by renowned journalist Simon Heffer, Chairman of the Judging Panel. He said: "The judges awarded this prize to Dean Close School for its 'funny, very relevant and in many ways brave content.’ It related very much to the School community in a very readable, intelligent and witty way. This was supported by a team who had gone outside of school and spoken to people on issues of interest. The judges felt that Dean Close School's feature article really stood out in this category." The Quad, founded in 2010 by Sam and Crissy Ryan, is already on its 11th edition with features ranging from August Riots and School Gossip to Tuition Fees and Being a 'Geek'. Headmaster Jonathan Lancashire, commented “It took a lot of courage for the editorial team to run this article and I am delighted that the Shine Awards have recognised its worth."

an invaluable service

investment

Brunsdon Financial Services CEO Brian Morman explains why a skilled Financial Adviser could be your greatest asset Here’s a question for you. What do you think has been the most successful industry in the world in the last 25 years? I guarantee that the first answer to pop into your head is the computer industry. Right? Well you’d be wrong, because the computer business as a whole has lost more money over the last 50 years than it has made, incredible as that may seem. The total losses of the losers in that industry to date are still greater than the total winnings of the winners! The correct answer is the financial services sector. Put aside the current turmoil in the markets and the negativity generated by the dubious activities of some of the banks, and the financial services industry is one of the best in the world at utilising breakthroughs in technology to its own advantage – and the advantage of its customers. But there’s another reason which is equally important.. Back in the good old days, most large employers, both public and private, provided ‘jobs for life’ and with that came a measure of lifetime financial security. In effect, the employer took on the role of financial adviser, career counsellor and retirement planner for you. To a large extent, your thinking and decision making about the future was taken off your hands. Over the last 30 years or so, as companies have had to concentrate more on just keeping afloat, this paternalism has largely disappeared and it has become important for individuals to take personal responsibility for their financial wellbeing. That’s why the role of financial adviser has become so important. Skilled financial advisers are fast becoming the new providers of plans and strategies for

those individuals who want to take greater self-initiative to move upwards and forwards, or for those that want to maintain what they’ve already achieved. I believe that competent, experienced and qualified financial advisers deliver an extremely important service in today’s society. At Brunsdon, this philosophy forms the basis of our financial services processes, which are geared towards helping our customers achieve their financial goals. These processes form the basis of a lifetime financial game plan. Such a plan, tailored to each individual client, can be continually updated and improved to react to changing circumstances and external forces. We are able to assess a client’s situation and identify decisions that need to be made and actions that need to be taken to produce immediate progress and lay down a plan for the future. This is our new model of financial services that is entirely client-focused. I also believe that in many ways, skilled financial advisers, more than advisers from any other profession, are ideally suited to be the most useful experts in a crowded and confused society. Whilst there are specialists in other fields that we may consult during our lives, financial advisers must be at or near the top of the list of those who will have the most enduring impact on the greatest number of consumers in the marketplace. A solid foundation of adaptable financial advice can provide invaluable peace of mind in a world that will continue to change in somewhat unpredictable ways. The Montpellier Asset Approach to Investing

business

At Montpellier we understand that capital exists for a particular purpose. Whether this is to provide you with an income now or in retirement, or to build a portfolio to pay for school fees, we accept that money and assets are nearly always required for some ultimate aim or objective in your life...

Q A

How do you approach a client’s request to invest their money? All of our clients are different, have different approaches to investment and are all willing to accept varying levels of risk. At Montpellier, we focus on diversifying our client’s investment portfolios in line with their risk level and we look to reduce the overall volatility by investing in a spread of different types of asset class. We will look at our client’s total asset base as well as the investments that they hold to ensure that their net worth is structured as efficiently as it can be. We accept that not all risk can be removed, but we look to manage risk where possible and reduce tax where appropriate. A client’s attitude to investment risk is evaluated by using a robust online Q&A process that determines a client’s appetite for risk by asking important questions of a financial nature.

Q A

Is there a general approach that you adopt when reducing risk? Investors can generally reduce risk on a portfolio by holding a range of different asset classes. There are four key asset classes:

AUGUST 2012

1. Cash 2. Property 3. Equities 4. Fixed interest (i.e. bonds)

Each of these key asset classes tend to perform well in certain market conditions. By broadening the portfolio across a range of areas this should mean that any fluctuations caused by financial and economic events can be smoothed out over the long term. This is however just the starting point!

Q A

How would you describe the Montpellier Approach to Investments? There are numerous different methods by which our clients’ funds may be invested. It is well known that active fund managers continually buy and sell their holdings to meet their investment objectives. This ‘portfolio turnover’ can be significant with corresponding costs that eat into investment returns. We have adopted what is known in the industry as a passive approach to investing, using funds that track indices with annual management fees as low as 0.20% At Montpellier, we build our client

portfolios to suit individual risk profiles and investment objectives by choosing from the growing number of passive and ‘enhanced index tracker’ type funds. By removing the need for a fund manager we can save our clients significant management costs. An index is a group of securities designed to represent a broad market. It provides a benchmark for that market’s performance. The range of funds available is growing apace and investors can gain access to various UK and global markets.

N.B You should also remember that index and passive funds don’t lower overall market risk. When the stockmarket falls, the price of shares in an index fund falls too. CS

On 13 June 2012 the Government launched its consultation on proposals to ensure that both parents remain in a child’s life after separation. Currently, the majority of parents who separate reach their own agreements about the care arrangements for their children. When disputes arise however, the Family Court needs to become involved in order to make a decision for the parents. Any decision made by the Court about the upbringing of a child is based on the principle that the child’s welfare is the paramount consideration. The Court will apply the factors contained within the Children Act 1989, which does not currently explicitly state that the ongoing involvement of both parents should be factored into such decisions. The Government believes that this has contributed to a perception that the law does not fully recognise the important role that both parents can play in a child’s life. The Government are therefore considering a change to the Children Act 1989 which would place an explicit requirement on the Court to consider the benefits of a child having a continuing relationship with both parents alongside the other factors affecting their welfare. The aim would be to re-enforce the expectation in Society that both parents are jointly responsible for their children’s upbringing. The Consultation paper states that the suggested amendment is not about equality in the time that a child spends with each parent. Rather, every family and every child’s circumstances are different, and the Court will continue to make decisions on this basis.

The Family Court and Family Law Specialists already adopt a starting point that contact with both parents is in the best interests of the child unless there are exceptional circumstances or concerns for the welfare of the child that justify departing from that starting point. However, there have been concerns raised by various organisations that amending the current legislation could actually cause more litigation and potentially place the child at a greater risk of harm. These are the concerns which the Consultation will no doubt seek to address. The Consultation is also to consider tougher sanctions to enforce breaches of Court Orders regarding care arrangements. It is unacceptable for a parent to disregard or deliberately disobey Court Orders and where this happens it is likely to be the child of the centre of the dispute who suffers most. The existing sanctions available to the Court include fines, imprisonment or an Order to undertake unpaid work. The Government therefore believes that a tougher approach is needed in such cases, and it intends to explore the scope for additional enforcement sanctions for the Court. This is likely to be a welcome development for parents that have been denied contact with their children by the other parent contrary to a Court Order, who in the past may have felt that there were no real consequences for them doing so. The Consultation is due to close on 5 September 2012 and the results of the Consultation are due to be published no later than October 2012. CS

“Giving something back” Emma Roberts meets Lorrin White, Operations Director at Cheltenham based Telecoms company Total Ltd…

Lorrin joined Total in 2002 and is responsible for administrative, service and back office functions. With over fifteen years’ experience in administration, service and project control within small to medium-sized companies in the financial services and international software sectors, Lorrin joined the company as an admin assistant and has enjoyed incredible growth within the business. “I really enjoy it!” she explains, “ Somebody once told me never to remain in the same role for more than 8 years! After more than 10 years here, I have incredibly exciting goals and want to be around to experience these challenges for myself. There is so much scope for

progression and success.” Lorrin’s business journey is one that I’m sure many can relate to. “I first started as a single mother with two children and it was difficult”, Lorrin says, “But I love the fact that my children have a very confident outlook on life and understand that you really do get what you work for. I was made redundant from an earlier role and obviously situations such as those can feel demoralising. But it was in fact my lucky break. Had that not have happened then I would never have had this opportunity.” Lorrin remembers the day that the recruitment agency told her about the position with Total, “They said that they thought I would really like this business and they were absolutely right! In my first interview here, I sat in the office and had an overwhelming feeling that there were real opportunities to be grasped. I am now a member of The Board and have never looked back.” Lorrin is very keen to give something back to other women in business and feels strongly that a lack of mentoring in business is a real problem. “It’s all too easy to hide behind a desk in my role”, she says, “but it’s getting out there that builds confidence and that’s a message that I like to spread. Just talking to

people can help you to learn so much and really grow as a person. Take nuggets of information from each situation and build on these. I do feel that a lack of mentoring in business is common and at times I felt that perhaps I needed a little more guidance. I made the decision to become a mentor and really enjoy it.” “My biggest support has come from my partner of nine years, who understands how hard I want to work. I returned home from a Board meeting yesterday and he persuaded me to go for an 8-mile walk! An exchange of views with him also adds clarity as he runs his own business and sometimes sees something that I don’t. I think it can be so rewarding to run ideas past a loved one.” Lorrin firmly believes that she doesn’t want to be a person that is sat behind her desk and is actively involved in the local community, as well as mentoring within the workplace. “The business is expanding quickly, but at a controlled rate and so we cannot allow volume to impact on the service which we provide. My focus is on ensuring that we continue to provide a high level of service. I have a personal plan and am now very outward-looking. I am learning all of the time and don’t want to stop!” CS

Meet inspiring student, Sara... Sara was like any other teenager before meningitis changed her life. Aged 18, Sara was struck down with meningococcal meningitis, which left her with a severe brain injury and little hope of recovery. Before her illness, Sara was like any normal teenager. Afterwards, she struggled to speak, to remember things and to see. The only way Sara could communicate was by pointing to pictures and phrases in a book. She relied on somebody else to be there to help, and communicating the simplest thing could be extremeley lengthy and frustrating. But, with the support of specialist technology and training at National Star College, Sara’s life has been transformed. She now uses an iPad to communicate independently and to remind her when tasks should be done. This has opened up new opportunities that she otherwise would not have had. “Learning to use an iPad has made me much happier. I can talk to people who come to the Bistro, and use it when I’m out and about as well” says Sara. Subsequently, Sara is now part of a new and popular enterprise at National Star College, Star Bistro, where she works to develop her confidence, selfesteem and independence as well as pave the way for future employment. Without your support, none of this would have been possible. What is the charity’s ethos? We provide education and training to equip young people with disabilities to face the world with confidence and aspiration; ultimately helping shape a society where people with disabilities have equal rights.

What are your challenges for 2012/2013? Recent cuts in government funding and the disbanding of support agencies make times particularly tough for both service users and providers like us. This, alongside rapidly outdating specialist equipment and technology (due to increasingly complex student needs) means that if we are to continue giving students like Sara the best chance in life, we need public support. A local delight

Page 128

Food writer, Ali Nightingale, reviews the new menu to tantalise your taste buds at Hotel du Vin CHEF PROFILE: PAUL MOTTRAM

“Home Grown Food Heroes” are the inspiration behind Paul’s food, combining the best local produce with classic Bistro style cooking. Learning his trade in the seafood restaurants in his hometown of Looe in Cornwall, Paul has since travelled the world as a Chef on the QE2 and worked in acclaimed hotels and restaurants across the UK, including time served under the tutelage of my own personal food hero, Nico Ladenis at Chez Nico in Park Lane. After years of fine dining and exotic food on his travels, Paul Mottram appears to be a relaxed and happy man now he is heading up the brigade at the Hotel du Vin Bistro. Chatting to Paul after service, he is obviously at his most animated and passionate when he is talking about food, specifically locally sourced and perfectly prepared produce. He uses mushrooms from the Forest of Dean, ducks from a family run business in the Wye Forest, salmon smoked to a bespoke Hotel du Vin cure. “My ethos is simple food, done really well. At home I’ll cook a big casserole or lasagne, put the pot in the middle of the table, and enjoy with a loaf of freshly cooked bread. It’s how everyone ate when I lived overseas. Professionally, I love to cook with fish, on the bone of course. You can’t beat Lemon Sole; our cool waters make for the best Sole in the world. That is the kind of food that I have introduced on the Plat du Jour menu; an unpretentious French Onion Soup, followed by Sole and maybe a Tarte au Citron.” 2 or 3 course Lunch menu £12.95 and £14.95 respectively.

I have a real affection for the Hotel du Vin in Cheltenham; it’s a beautiful building, luxuriously decorated, so elegant and stylish. Fortunately it is also on my doorstep. HdV came to town five years ago, and quickly became something of an institution, blending in seamlessly with the fashionable and historical Montpellier sensibility. I have eaten there regularly because the service is slick and the food is so reliable. The only thing that frustrates me is that I have no valid excuse to book a room, but there is such a relaxed atmosphere I can momentarily forget that I am not an overnight guest, and lounge the hours away in a comfortable chair after dinner, without outstaying my welcome. The bar staff appear to anticipate my needs with telepathic skill, and a perfectly mixed drink is never more than a raised eyebrow away; but let me tear myself away from the tranquil lounge and my cocktail long enough to recommend the food. The purpose of my recent visit was to try the new menu, which is a “back to our roots” affair focusing on Bistro classics; the tried and tested favourites that feature throughout the chain. French in origin, these are the dishes that sit best with the excellent wine on offer, for which Hotel du Vin is celebrated. In practical terms the philosophy is to allow the hotels to offer consistency from the du Vin family to the customer nationwide, but essentially allows the individual Chef to work with the best available local ingredients, to make classics as tasty as they can possibly be. The menu is selected to

happily compliment the superimpressive wine list, but rest assured, the food in the Bistro is not the poor relation in any way. Whilst perusing the menu, we ordered an aperitif. My request was for a cocktail of the bartenders choosing (I like to be surprised). We were presented with deconstructed champagne cocktails; a flute of the sparkly stuff served alongside a small glass of super-sweet berry liqueur, which also contained the most delightful miniature wild strawberries. Taste buds merrily tickled, the first course arrived. I chose a Goats Cheese and Beetroot Salad and Mr. N opted for Dressed Crab. Absolutely tip-top on both counts. We had decided to wine match our meal, and left the selection up to the Sommelier, Roberto, who was a superb guide and as knowledgeable as you would expect in such a wine-centric establishment. He chose a Chablis (Domaine Bernard Defaix) for the crab dish, and my goats cheese was paired with a classic N.Z. Sauvignon Blanc. My main course of Roast Cod on Buttered Leeks with a stunning Salsa Verde was light and flaky, packing a knock-out punch of fragrant Mediterranean herbs. This was paired with a floral, un-oaked Italian Friulano (Bastianich, Colli Orientali del Friuli). Mr. N chose a dry-aged Fillet Steak, with an acidic, perfectly balanced Sauce Béarnaise, and Roberto selected a low tannic Californian Pinot Noir to accompany the richness of the griddled meat. We were beginning to feel a little giddy AUGUST 2012

with the attention; a Sommelier that knew what we had ordered food wise, without having to ask, is a joy to be served by. The where, the why, the how he arrived at his choices on our behalf was helpfully explained without a hint of superiority. As the headiness of the grape began to work magic, I got a little carried away and was prompted to discuss the importance of heritage vegetables for ten minutes with my rather bemused husband, who can hold his drink far better than I can. Puddings often pose a problem for wine matching but we threw down the gauntlet when my husband chose a light as a feather White Chocolate Pave with a strawberry compote. Notoriously AUGUST 2012

difficult to find wines to match, Roberto decided to experiment and brought a glass of Tannat Reserve Marichal, from Uruguay (hints of jam and vanilla) which was spectacular. A perfect pairing. I went for the retro option, and ate a wicked Rhum BaBa, alongside a traditional Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, Domaine de Durban. It was a splendid meal, albeit enhanced by the glorious grape, and the wine matching experience was an especially enjoyable indulgence. There are not many restaurants that you can play with food and wine pairing so successfully, and with such inspiring results. Service was faultless. The atmosphere is relaxing and unchallenging. I would love to see

the Bistro buzzing and fully booked every night, not just with hotel guests, but with local customers too, taking advantage of a super restaurant and surprisingly reasonable prices. Verdict: Top-notch wining and dining with a warm, professional welcome. The combination of a skilful chef, a knowledge Sommelier in Roberto Zanca, and an attractive venue continue to impress me. The Hotel du Vin make every guest feel like a V.I.P. CS To find out more or book a meal at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham, call 01242 588 450 or email Info.Cheltenham@HotelduVin.com

Independents Day

comment

On 4th July Gloucester held its first “Independents Day”, aimed at supporting and promoting our independent traders. We also held our first Night Market in Kings Square, where 40 traders took stalls and people turned up in their hundreds to browse, to buy, to eat and drink and to listen to the entertainment on the stage alongside the market. It was something of a coincidence that both events fell on 4th July, which is, of course, American Independence Day. Gloucester’s links with the US are many. John Stafford-Smith, the composer of the American anthem, was from Gloucester and a plaque to him stands in our Cathedral although marketing bosses there admit that they

“don’t get people flocking to it”. George Whitefield, the evangelist, was born at the Bell Inn and preached his first sermon from St Mary de Crypt Church in Southgate Street. He is, perhaps, better known in the US than the UK because of his travels through the American colonies. And there is a Gloucester in Massachusetts, although the City Council has never really made much of the link, stopping short of a formal twinning arrangement. So, with all of these connections, it’s not surprising that some people have called for us to do more to market the city to our friends across the pond. A few years ago, Gloucester (like many other places) was accused of being a “clone town”. We are, of course,

a city not a town and I dispute the “clone” label too. We’ve moved on a lot since then anyway. We do want the big name retailers and the multi million pound refurbishment of Debenhams and our new, bigger and better M&S store are testament to that. But we do recognise the value of our independent traders and the way in which they make our retail offer unique. To give you some examples, Miss Silver in Commercial Road sells handmade retro dresses in 1950s and 60s styles. StanMan’s Kitchen in Westgate Street is a delicatessen and cafe selling good food from the local area and further afield. And the House of the Tailor of Gloucester in College Court is owned and run by local people and sells all things Beatrix Potter. The Night Market gave our independents an opportunity to show off their wares. As well as traders selling crafts and fashion, stallholders also included some of our local restaurateurs. What Gloucester may lack in fine dining it certainly makes up for with the diversity of our restaurants. C&W African Experience in St Catherine Street, in the shadow of the Kingsholm rugby stadium, is a hidden gem and a popular one at that. I tried their goat curry at the market and will certainly pay the restaurant a visit too. Lizzie Abderrahim’s El Bahdja café in Westgate Street also had a stall serving some of their North African cuisine. Gloucester’s Kings Quarter development, which recently took another step forward, will bring in some of the major retailers not represented in the city. Gloucester Quays are working hard to attract new retailers to their outlet shopping centre (so expect some news soon) and the next phase will bring in a host of big name restaurants alongside the new cinema. Our high streets of the future need to be different to survive in the face of online shopping, out-of-town centres and the dominance of supermarkets. That’s what Mary Portas said and I agree. So we’ll keep on nurturing our independent traders so the city can remain unique and prosper in the years to come. CS

Loyalty in the modern game

And so it begins! As the Premiership season kicks off, former Cheltenham Town football star Shane Duff lets us in on his predictions for the highs and lows that lay ahead…

‘IF A PLAYER THINKS THE CLUB ARE GOOD FOR THEM THEY WILL SIGN A CONTRACT. IF THEY DO NOT, THEY WILL LOOK ELSEWHERE. NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.’

AUGUST 2012

Who is going to win it this year? Man United I hope. I wasn't a happy bunny on the last day of last season. Sat in my front room on my own watching ten months of hard work unfold, looking through twitter and Facebook feeds seeing people bragging about what they thought was the outcome... And we all know what happened. Thankfully I wasn't one of those who spoke too soon. This year I cannot see past a winner that doesn't come from Manchester, be it United or City. Chelsea have made signings under their new manager, Roberto Di Matteo, and are brimming with confidence after their European victory. Liverpool also have a new manager and Tottenham have bizarrely parted company with their manager Harry Redknapp. I should really be mentioning Arsenal in this bracket but I don't think they are going to challenge, especially after their talisman Robin Van Persie has set his sights on a move away from the London outfit. Gone are the days when you look at the Arsenal team and believe that they will be a major force in the trophy stakes. Ask yourself how many of their current squad would walk into other top squads in the country. My answer would be not many! This takes me onto the issue of player loyalty. So much has been written about Robin Van Persie being a money grabber and disloyal, but you have to realise that he has given Arsenal some great years and scored many goals for them. His job description is to score goals, not to promise loyalty when his best playing

team mates are being sold around him. All footballers have individual goals and ambitions and they are often remembered for medals won. If Van Persie stays next year and gets injured for the season, the fans would be calling him a financial liability and the club would be quick to offload as he would be 30 years of age. Loyalty isn't something that is one way in football. Each club looks at each player individually and asks themselves "are they good for the club?" and the same thing happens the other way around. If a player thinks the club are good for them they will sign a contract. If they do not, they will look elsewhere. Not rocket science. Robin Van Persie will be 29 years old at the start of the next Premiership season which is arguably the peak of a players career. If his career was to end as sharply as mine did what medals has he won to show for his special talent. He will be thinking that he has an opportunity now to leave Arsenal for a cut price and go to a club where he believes will be challenging for top honours. If he was to stay he would always have wondered "what if ?". By moving on he reduces his risk of any regrets. Whatever happens the Premiership season will bring many trials and tribulations and I for one look forward to it very much. Best of luck to your team! Meet the owner… Adam Powell of the Fetish Bike Company tells us what his business means to cyclists in The Cotswolds…

Q.What do you do? I’m the Director of Fetish Bike Company and Lifestyle Escape. My background is in the fitness industry with over 13 years experience and am a fully qualified personal trainer and I am a British Cycling commissaire. I launched Fetish Bike Company in December 2011; it aims to offer something different and exciting to cyclists in the Cotswolds and nationally. My main role is developing and expanding the company and enabling the staff to work to the best of their abilities. I am very lucky to have a great team working for me at Fetish Bike Company. Once the guys arrive we go through the jobs for the day, marketing ideas, brands and internet orders, website development

and what racing is coming up at the weekend. After this it is a mix of training clients, speaking with customers, dealing with distributors and orders, tinkering with bikes, going to meetings and finding time to train myself!

Q. How are you different? The difference between ourselves and other bike shops is evident as soon as you walk through the door. We have 4000 square feet of space comprising retail, fitness, and workshop from the service point of view, but also a chill out area with coffee machine, sofas and TV through which we stream the latest movies, the Grand Tours and World Cup Downhill coverage and other sporting events.

‘FOR US AT FETISH BIKE COMPANY, IT IS ABOUT GETTING YOU AS A RIDER FITTER, FASTER, STRONGER AND ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE YOU SPEND ON YOUR BIKE.’

There is a fully equipped gym where we carry out full fitness tests on both our sponsored riders and customers alike, and create bespoke training plans to help transform their riding and racing, ensuring that they get the most from every session in the gym or time on the bike. There is a fully fitted changing room with a bike so that customers may try on clothing and test how well it performs. And taking into account the store's location, in relation to great riding both on the roads and off road, we installed bathroom and changing facilities so that customers and clients can get cleaned up after a ride and go straight to their next location, be it work or elsewhere, or relax on the sofa after browsing through the latest bikes, components and other stock on the shop floor. For us at Fetish Bike Company, it is about getting you as a rider fitter, faster, stronger and enjoying every minute you spend on your bike. We are passionate about cycling and this shows when you come in and talk with us. There is no pressure to buy anything, clients and customers are free to come in and talk bikes whilst having a tea or coffee and sometimes cake! Q. Do you offer support to athletes? 1. CHIN-UPS: This type of chin-up has the greatest range of movements of all chin-ups for both the lats and upper arms. The starting position begins with a bar grasp position. The hands should be held at shoulder width or slightly narrower. The arms should be straightened in a fully extended position with the torso in line with the upper arms. To begin the ascent, the relatively strong upper back and elbow flexor muscles will be used, as the elbows are drawn down and back.

2. FALMERS WALK: This tests more than just the grip. Sure, the grip is tested in this exercise, but so are the agility, upper back and leg strength. Starting with a heavy deadlift-like movement and then moving with the weight a certain distance is a great way to test the athleticism.

3. ROPE WHIPS: Rope exercises require the whole body but really focus the core, back, shoulders and arms. For example, the wave is an excellent arm and shoulder workout.

4. TRICEP MEDICINE BALL PRESS-UPS: Placing both hands on the medicine ball at about chest level, bend your arms to maximum depth and then push up and fully lock arms. This concentrates the tricep area. Again for a timed period or go to fatigue.

5. TYRE FLIP: When you flip the tyre it is best to start with the tyre flat on the ground. Place your fingers and hands as far under the tyre as you can in this position and keep your hands about shoulder width apart. Squat down and then while pulling the tyre up with your arms and back explode out of the bottom position. As the tyre comes up you should have enough momentum that you can change your hands from a pulling to a pushing position and push the tyre all the way over. Immediately after the tyre is pushed over and flat, start the process again.

6. KICKBOXING: Constantly put punches and kicks together for endurance 2 x 3min round. Concentrate mainly on achieving the correct technique.

7. REVOLUTIONS: This again works the shoulders and neck. Start by rotating the weight in a clockwise and smooth manner for 4 revolutions and then anti-clockwise 4 revolutions for a timed period.

Buckets of passion...

motoring

Eric Barton takes a look at car servicing and repairs with Richard Tan of Vehicle Solutions

In the late nineties the car industry managed to banish rust from just about every vehicle that was manufactured or imported. I’m not going to include the rust - ridden death traps that appeared from Russia though. The late nineties and in particular 1998 was the year that Mika Hakkinen won the Formula 1 World Championship and it was the year that saw us all bombing about in the newly launched Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus. Happily it was also the year that witnessed the demise of the horrible Rover 600 and 800. Hurrah. 1998 was also the year that an eighteen year old Richard Tan, owner of Vehicle Solutions in Cheltenham, had the passion to pick up a bucket and sponge and start his own business. Richard Tan saw an opportunity and with £250 in his back pocket decided that valeting and servicing cars was his future. It’s a humble start to what has now become a very stable and growing business that provides some of the best car servicing, bodywork, MOT’s, alloy refurbishment and valeting in Cheltenham. Richard says,’ It was a very meagre start, but after only a few years I managed to acquire an industrial unit, enabling the business to flourish and AUGUST 2012

provide the levels of service that I wanted to supply’. In fact Vehicle Solutions work locally on behalf of Volkswagen, Land Rover, Fiat and Mazda providing bodywork to the manufacturers’ specifications. There’s a whiff of uniqueness about the business and Richard goes on to comment, ‘our service levels here at Vehicle Solutions is second to none. Nothing leaves the workshop unless I see and approve it. I’ve set the bar very high here in terms of standards and we’ve built up a very loyal customer base in Cheltenham’. That personal touch that he’s on about extends to providing a free courtesy car to customers whilst their own car is being worked on. In this day and age that’s remarkable. I can think of some businesses that might (and I mean just might) grudgingly loan you a car and even then it might be something you’d need a disguise to drive. Richard Tan goes on to say, ‘we also offer a free collection and delivery service from home or work and in some cases we can be almost 60 per cent cheaper on repair costs versus the main dealerships’. Vehicle Solutions now have two locations in Cheltenham; one just off the Tewkesbury Road (not far from Homebase) and the other in the Lansdown

Industrial Estate. Richard says’ I’ve managed to grow the business bit by bit and now have nine brilliant staff ’. There’s a wee glint in Richards eye when I probe him more to see what makes him tick. He simply retorts,’ I really get a kick out of repairing a car that’s been involved in an accident and restoring it to the point that you’d never know it’s been damaged’. Everything these days seems to have gone (or be going) digital and Vehicle Solutions have brightly latched onto this phenomena. Simply take a picture of your cars damage and text it to Richard and his team and they’ll give you a quote straight back by text. That’s brilliant. It’s quick and it’s modern! So you see there’s a lot to be said for passion, especially when it involves a sponge… and I don’t mean the erstwhile ladies of the WI. Cheltenham Gents Outfitters “James of Montpellier” Kit themselves out with the New Kia Sportage

“IT FITS WITH OUR COMPANY IMAGE OF PROVIDING GREAT QUALITY WITH VALUE AND UNDERSTATED STYLE AND THE DEAL WAS FANTASTIC’’

AUGUST 2012

Business partners Graham Ellis and Iskander Alpan know a thing or two about looks and Style they have been in Business at the James of Montpellier Gents Boutique for over 25 years . They have both chosen to renew their cars with the latest Top of the Range Kia Sportage KX 3 model 4x4. Graham has driven many cars in the past although he comments from his youthful appearance you would not think so. The appeal of the Kia Sportage came from the looks and the great Build Quality coupled with the 7 year warranty it has given both myself and Iskander all that we need in a Vehicle. It fits with our company image of Providing great quality with value and understated Style and the deal was fantastic added Graham. Matthew Cripps General manager at Wessex Garages Kia in Gloucester has been a customer of ours for a number of years so when we came to renew our cars it was great to be able to try out the new cars for a couple of days. This was done with ease and Matthew organised various demonstration drives with his sales team for us.

Graham and Iskander comment they needed to make sure that they would be making the correct choice of new car as they said it is like a fine wine or the lady in your life you must always make sure you have made the correct decision as there is no going back once you have made the decision as it can be a very costly affair they said with their typical wry humour. We only stock top Quality Brands such as Eton Shirts, Roy Robson Suits, Buggati Jeans and casual wear, so like the fact that our Brands our very niche and are of high quality we see this in our new Kia Sportages not everyone knows what they are but once you have one you know you have made the right choice!!!! We would like to thank Matthew and the Wessex Kia Team for making the purchase easy and a pleasurable experience. Thanks also to all of our Clients old and new for their continued support and friendship over the last 25 years. motoring

Jim McGill test drives the new Audi A3 2.0 TDI 150PS...

Whenever a new Audi is launched, it’s always worth sitting up and taking notice: and in the case of the new Audi A3, that notice is well directed. The Audi rival to the MkVII VW Golf, which arrives towards the end of the year, is a car which demands your attention. A well-rounded premium hatch, the new A3 delivers an evolutionary new look and revolutionary leaps in quality, technological sophistication and driver appeal. And just for good measure, it offers an excellent specification across its SE, Sport and S line trim levels. Prices range from £19,205 to £26,560, and order books are already open with first deliveries scheduled for September. The new A3’s body is significantly lighter – by around 80kg – than that of the previous model. This has been achieved by extensive use of aluminium and highstrength steels. That, combined with savings in other areas, means the car is around an average passenger’s weight lighter despite being almost exactly the same size. Inside the cabin, Audi has further strengthened its reputation for leading the class in terms of trim quality and solidity. Everywhere your fingers touch, they are met by excellence in terms of materials and finishes. Look around the cabin, and you’ll quickly identify the eye-catching eyeball-style dashboard vents. Audi designers have increased the

interior space by stretching the new A3’s wheelbase, while keeping the car’s overall length the same. It’s also wider. The result is more elbow room for the driver and front passenger, and access to the rear seats isn’t as clumsy a manoeuvre as experienced in some other cars in its class. There’s also more storage space in the boot: up 15 litres to 365 litres. The rear seats also flip forward easily for more room. Audi has also introduced a much slimmer pop-up screen for the optional – must-have – MMI (multimedia interface) system. As you would expect for a leading car in its class, there are also a number of significant driver assistance systems available, including active lane assist, traffic sign detection and parking assistance. There are three very convincing fourcylinder petrol and TDI options to choose from at launch, all of which are essentially new developments bringing fuel economy gains of up to 12 per cent over their predecessors. The 1.4-litre and 1.8TFSI petrol engines and the 2.0TDI have outputs of 122PS, 180PS and 150PS respectively, and all drive the front wheels in this first phase. The 1.8TFSI is linked as standard to a seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission; the 1.4TFSI and 2.0TDI are paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

As if that wasn’t comprehensive enough, additional engine and transmission combinations, and new engines such as the 1.4TFSI with innovative cylinder on demand technology, will follow, as will models equipped with quattro permanent all-wheel-drive. We tested the A3 2.0 TDI 150PS, which returns a very attractive 68.9mpg and emits just 106g/km CO2, thus ensuring you won’t be polluting the Cotswold countryside as you enjoy your driving. And it’s no slouch: it’ll cover the 0-62mph sprint in 8.6secs and, where legal, carry on to a maximum or 134mph. Refinement levels on the road are, as you would expect, high, and the power delivery from the turbodiesel is silky smooth and relaxed. Perfectly at home mixing it with the town centre traffic, the A3 simply gobbles up the miles when faced by long motorway journeys thus ensuring you arrive fresh and relaxed. Initially the range will consist of a number of three-door hatchbacks, but this will be joined early on by a parallel line-up of five-door Sportback models. And don’t be surprised if a convertible version joins the party as well. Once again Audi has delivered a car worthy of close inspection. If it’s flawless build quality allied to comfort and class you desire in a car, then the new Audi A3 is certainly worth checking out. CS

This month, I want to talk about the weather. Because I haven’t done that much this summer (joke). Twice this year I have commented, in advance, on upcoming major equestrian events in Gloucestershire... that have both gone on to be cancelled due to the appallingly wet ground. It was almost inconceivable before, but outdoor events being postponed or ruined is rapidly becoming the norm during these ‘winter like’ summer conditions. At the time of going to press The Olympic Games is STILL ON. I’m aware of the irony – the eyes of the world are on us... this green and pleasant land... where everyone knows it can potentially rain a lot. I am always defending the notion that our climate is rubbish – it’s a perception, I declare. In fact, it can be really hot and dry for long periods I say to foreigners who wonder why I live here. They’re all looking at me like I’m utterly mad now. No point trying to say this year seems to be a one off (I hope it’s a one off!), it sounds a bit hollow from underneath an umbrella whilst standing in 6 inches of mud. In July. The tremendous rainfall has for many people been depressing, a pain, gloomy and miserable, but for some it has been catastrophic. Farmers across the country will be counting the cost for years to come – even if there were a few sunny days in a row, it is virtually impossible to make hay while the ground is so saturated. Cattle that have been kept in all winter to avoid poaching the summer grazing are out, doing it now instead. Smooth flat fields have been turned to a brown, churned up, gloopy mass. The National Trust has described the

rain in the UK as ‘almost apocalyptic’ for some wildlife. Bees, bats, birds and butterflies have really suffered, with fears some rare or isolated species may become extinct. On the other hand, though, slugs and snails have had a bumper year so far. Whoopie. The fields my horses live in are almost soupy, they are so wet – and the most dismal thing of all is that winter is just around the corner – usually when I’m wading through wellie sucking off conditions on a daily basis, I have imminent spring and summer to look forward to, but instead the leaves will soon be starting to turn! Clothes shops are in turmoil with excess summer wear left over – when we had good weather earlier in the year - the winter stuff was still on the rails. However, after all this doom, it is worth remembering the eternal optimism we seem able to conjure up. March was lovely and warm – the ground was hard, the sun shone and it stayed dry... and obviously the autumn will be the same. In fact, it’s probably good we’ve got all the rain out of the way before the Olympics – statistically we should have a fabulous August. Hmmmm. I don’t know anyone who is not consistently talking about the crappy weather – with an incredulous ‘how unlucky are we?’ face. But this does then move on to bright positivity about how it’s soon going to turn – cue ‘we’re proud to be able to handle it so well because we are British’ face. As I write its tipping down outside and I’m wearing the same clothes I had on in January, BUT… I’m taking my sandals with me today in case the sun comes out later. CS AUGUST 2012
