editor’s foreword

“Can’'t repeat the past? Why of course you can!”… to quote Jay Gatsby in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. Whatever your opinion is of Baz Luhrmann’s cinematic version of the literary classic, you can’t deny that Gatsby fever is sweeping the nation. With that in mind, we decided to glance back to the Roaring Twenties and celebrate the glitz and glamour of the era. Turn to page 52 to view Stefanie Trower’s fashion shoot, mixing modern aspects with flapper girl style to create gorgeously glossy results. Our love affair with vintage style is more popular than ever and we take a look at how to style this trend for yourself, taking inspiration from stockists right here in the Cotswolds. On pages 56 and 57 our experts show you how to follow the vintage trend in order to make it your own. Don’t forget Dad this month. Father’s Day is on Sunday 16th June and we think he deserves a treat. Enter our competition opposite and you could win the chance to take Dad for a meal at The Daffodil. Cheltenham Science Festival is hitting the town from June 4th-9th and promises to be as diverse as ever. Another great idea if you are stuck for a gift idea! For the foodies amongst you, we have something to whet the appetite this month. Cheltenham Food and Drink Festival takes place from 14th-16th June. Don’t miss our Cotswold Style Real Food and Drinks Theatre. Talks take place here across the three days, featuring everything from ‘An Introduction to Single Cask Whisky’, to ‘Easy Entertaining on a budget with Patsy Shilling’. Fingers crossed for lots of beautiful sunshine! I hope that you enjoy reading the issue and if you have any comments at all please drop me an email at the address below.

Cotswold Style Magazine ROYAL GARDEN PARTY at BUCKINGHAM PALACE Sarah Speakman from The Cheltenham Hat Company explains how to put the finishing touch to your outfit for any Royal occasion this summer. ‘Clothes are to us what fur and feathers are to beasts and birds; they not only add to our appearance, but they are our appearance. How we look to others entirely depends upon what we wear and how we wear it’ - Emily Post (1873–1960). Etiquette, 1922. The same is still true today. And should you be visiting the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot this year, or be fortunate enough to attend one of the Queen’s famous garden parties, it is essential you get the dress code spot on.

“Hats and head pieces have always played an important role in Royal occasions,” says Sarah. “And for any Royal occasion or event where the Queen is present, Suzanne Hall-Gibbins hats or substantial head-pieces must be worn; the crown of the head needs to be covered and the base of any headpiece must be at least 4 inches in diameter, ruling out most fascinators. “I have many customers who are looking for the right headpiece and we need to make sure we get it right. Some of my customers will always opt for a

full hat just to be safe, but a half-hat or percher is perfectly acceptable, and in some cases, bigger than many of my hats.” It is also recommended that black is not worn. Angela Edwards For Royal Ascot, skirts should sit below the knee and straps should be at least 1 inch wide, but these rules are relaxed slightly for Royal garden parties although ladies’ dress should be modest and appropriate for such an occasion.

Kathryn: “Having bounced a few ideas off each other we realised a gap in the market. This area is brimming with talented designers and quality products. We are delighted to find a diversity of products and ranges available, to include, but not exhaustive, designer cufflinks; award winning children’s gifts; great gifts in tins; as well as handmade items.”

The moment you really thought “We’ve made it”? Kathryn: “The moment our website was launched. Many hours of fun, hard work, sweat and glasses of wine to see our work come to fruition. Also, surviving and enjoying our first Christmas period!”

Cat: “Getting that first order. However, what still drives us both further is the desire to still want to ‘make it’ and develop the company further through offering new and exciting products.”

What is my background? My introduction… We are a ‘no cost to the customer’ service which provides expertise to those who would otherwise be entering into a project with no building knowledge. Atlas Building Consultants will oversee any job. From ground works, landscape gardening and complete refurbishments to kitchen and bathroom re-fits. We are your first line of defence in the protection of your interests. Our team will manage your project from planning; straight through to completion ensuring the client any variations are legitimate, necessary and transparent. We have found that an issue which is common with private residential projects is that the customer does not speak the same language as the trades people. We work as the interpreter for the client, free of charge, to strategise and organise the project, maintain the everyday running of the project and act as a liaison between the client and the trades people to ensure that nothing gets lost in translation and transparency is upheld throughout the project at absolutely no cost to the client. Our goal is to alleviate you of the indescribable and often intimidating task of finding the right builder and trades people for you. Whether or not we undertake the responsibility of securing the planning permission or not, one of our functions is to tender your project to our accredited and trusted trades people from the local community. Whilst we ensure and maintain transparency with our clients and trades people alike, it will be for the client to decide which tender best suits their personal needs. Personal needs could include issues such as the need to sticking to a strict time frame for project completion which will be imperative with regards to family disruption. Others might include budgeting issues, neighbour proximity/rights of way and respecting those neighbours' rights etc. All these concerns are addressed from the onset. We will only tender those trades JUNE 2013

Meet Adam Bertrand, our property expert from Atlas Building Consultants… people we deem fit-for-purpose for your particular project whilst ensuring that the client has the final say. Again, the hope here is to relieve the client of any stress and potential inhibitions about whether the builders they choose are right for the job. All our trades people are registered with the Federation of Master Builders or associations relating to their specific trade. Our aim is to protect the quality of the workmanship whilst maintaining a reasonably high level of quantity at an affordable rate. A reasonably common question at the beginning of a project is whether or not planning or planning permission is needed. For the most part this can be a difficult task. It must be done in a meticulous manner to ensure that you adhere to all relevant procedures relating to your project. The hurdles that need to be jumped can be, at times, both daunting and difficult to understand. As a result, it is easy to find, during the early stages of your project, that the project can be very stressful and time consuming. Without the proper planning and/or planning permission the stresses can be exasperating Planning permission would only apply to those people engaging in new build projects, those making a major change to their existing building such as an extension, and those who intend to change the usage of their building by possibly turning their building from a single family dwelling to multiple flats. Our function as consultants is to remove this burden from the client and engage in all the early planning processes that will enable them to successfully begin their project. We hope that a stress free incubation period will deliver a stress free project for our valued clients. If, on the other hand, your project

Rain, rain go away

JUNE 2013

Jon Hodder, Sudeley Castle’s Senior Gardener, addresses the weather...

www.facebook.com/bbcgloucestershire

‘‘ PHOTO: BBC Radio Gloucestershire

It would be quite out of place for me not to mention the weather. The vagaries of the persistent, and dry, cold weather have meant that this year’s 'season' is already presenting us with difficulties. Currently it would appear that we are going into late spring/summer with a distinct and concerning dryness in the top few inches of the soil. The very dry and cold weather in April has delayed flowering in many plants by about three weeks and has also had an effect on wildlife, the most obvious at Sudeley being the distinct lack of ducklings. At the time of writing (mid May) I have as yet seen none. This time last year the gardeners’ yard was alive with them. I have seen mating newts in the ponds, but very few frogs and toads. The effects of the last twelve months will be with us for a while yet. I have noticed that the local rooks appear to be nesting high. There is an old saying that says if they do, the summer will be fair. My hope is that the rooks know something that we cannot discern. The prospect of another ruined, welly-wearing summer is not something that I relish. The Castle was recently been featured in the media, which has caused much excitement and lots of visitors to our website. BBC TV’s Countryfile filmed here and the entire programme centred on Sudeley. The gardens were featured, including Sir Roddy Llewellyn’s plans for the Banqueting Hall garden designs, but sadly not the Gardeners. The Hollywood contract remains elusive. We have, however, done some pieces for radio recently, including Radio Winchcombe and most recently three of us did a short interview with BBC Radio Gloucestershire, which aired on Mayday bank holiday. As I am writing this, the rain is pouring down, and the wind is blowing a gale. It is as if we have been plunged back into October. As I basked in the warm sun of the first May bank holiday I foolishly thought that perhaps we might just be able to enjoy a reasonable

I will speak freely and voice the opinion that I am completely fed up with the fickle nature of the weather that we have been experiencing for the last few years. It is beginning to stretch my stoicism to the extremes. The only certainty is that there is no certainty. The tulip display at the Castle was standing well, right up to the point that we experienced storm force winds and driving rain. The tulip is a wonderful thing, and this year we had a lot of new varieties, which lit the gardens up really well but they seldom fare well in a strong wind. The day after the storm I walked around the gardens and viewed the broken stalks and wind-strewn petals with a certain resignation. Nothing indeed lasts for ever, but had the

weather been a little kinder all our effort in the Autumn could have endured a little longer. This is the quiet pain and upset, which is part of being a gardener, as much as enjoying the wonderful blooms and splendid scents. It is a reminder to us all to enjoy the moment, because tomorrow it may all be as dust. Keep an eye on your weeds, show any bindweed you find no mercy and be aware of those nesting birds, hiding in your shrubberies. gardening In 2010 I had the honour of being one of the last few visitors to the Leonardslee Estate gardens in Sussex prior to its sale and subsequent closure to the public. This was the garden where plant collector Sir Edmund Loder filled every inch with a sweetshop collection of trees and shrubs. It was here that he crossed Rhododendron griffithianum with Rhododendron fortunei to create the famous Loderi rhododendrons. The colossal scented blooms on thick stems of some of these ancient vast examples were pointed out to me by Robin Loder and it was a real privilege to stand side by side with these trunks of horticultural heritage. Although the gardens are no longer open, the collection of rhododendrons will live on as custodians of the estate and keeping quiet watch from above on the new owners. Happily Loder Plants is still run by the family and can boast one of the largest collections of rhododendrons in Europe! Closer to home you need look no further than the Dowdeswell Reservoir alongside the A40, where my early years were spent in a regular parallel drive back and forth from Cheltenham to Compton Abdale, to appreciate the sophisticated wash of purple that jumps out from the other side of the water. These acid loving plants are often found in woodland, happiest neighbouring a lake or river and really lift an otherwise darkened area like illuminated powder puffs in the shadows. With almost 30,000 cultivars, there is something for everyone: from the dwarf to the tall and evergreen to deciduous and from the sweetest cream, through all hues of lilac and pink to the deepest magenta. As if this wasn’t enough, it was at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2011 that I was introduced to news that caused lime soil dwellers everywhere to rejoice as Millais Nurseries showcased a new lime tolerant rootstock. This ‘Inkarho’ rootstock really has signalled a new age in rhododendron appreciation enabling those in lime rich areas to partake in growing and has welcomed a whole new era of enthusiasts from any ‘soil’ of life. Native to all continents in the world, apart from Africa and South America, these plants are prized for their structure and stately beauty. Such is their beauty JUNE 2013

stately

A BEAUTY

Cheltenham horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith was trained at Pershore College and has a wealth of green fingered experience to her name, working on a variety of TV gardening output from Gardener’s World to The Flowerpot Gang and is currently working on a brand new programme for the BBC. Here we look at a sophisticated woodland favourite...

that it is not hard to see why a rhododendron has been shortlisted as RHS Plant of the Century at the 100th RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year. By the time this goes to print we will know whether Rhododendron yakushimanum Koichiro Wada has won that title! Rhododendron gets its name from the Greek words rhodon (a rose) and dendron (a tree) and has been believed to symbolize protection. Certainly a physical protective arm could be

perceived in the branch of a Rhododendron giganteum as it creeps upwards towards 100 feet! There are some however who would far rather not be under the watch of the rhododendron, as a group of red squirrels in Brownsea Island in Dorset can testify having been almost wiped out by an ever increasing army of Rhododendron ponticum introduced in the 19th Century. Rhododendrons can, you see, become invasive and in such a situation threaten wildlife, with removal being the best option as was the case in Dorset where the shrubs were eventually removed and the red squirrels saved. However this is only necessary on rare occasions and most of the time we can enjoy their stately splendour, so loved by the Victorians. Lionel de Rothschild with his collection at Exbury gardens, Edmund Loder and his Loderi creations and Joseph Hooker who introduced a vast number of species to the UK from the Himalayas in 1850, all played a vital part in the introduction and popularisation of this stunning plant in this country. However for me, W S Gilbert’s stamp of approval by mass rhododendron planting around his self built lake is more than enough to convert this Cheltenham lady! CS

Why I won’t be buying a cover-up and why I despise capsule wardrobes…

Ah, summer’s here. Even if the weather doesn’t give you a clue, you can’t fight your way through the shops without knocking into a beachwear display or tripping over flip flops. Who uses those beach cover-ups anyway? Since when did leopard skin patterned nylon hide anyone’s wobbly bits? The shops should be prosecuted under the trades descriptions act if you ask me; all that beachwear does is cling embarrassingly to our nether regions and make you sweat. Better to go the safe route à la the Nigella Burka, or how about a good old-fashioned towel – thick enough to disguise the most rubenesque of figures, (and keeps you warm if you’ve been conned into a staycation in the UK by a miserly husband). But, however much of a mistake, you still buy one, because it’s a holiday rite of passage isn’t it? Holidays make lots of rules null and void: like airport drinking – you wouldn’t dream of pouring a glass of wine at 8am with your cornflakes, but suddenly at Bristol’s departure lounge it seems perfectly normal. As it does on flights; On my last (hopefully never to be repeated) Ryanair flight to

Newcastle, after a delayed departure because Dave, the Stag, was thrown off the flight for puking on the flight deck and Sharon and her fellow hens had started inflating their 100 condoms – I really needed a drink. When I asked for a gin and tonic (and readers, if you’ve been following this column, you know I don’t like my G&Ts to be messed with), the hostess informed me they had no tonic – would I like coke instead? “Do you get asked for gin and coke often?” I quizzed. “No, but people aren’t normally bothered if we’ve got nowt else”… Ah the joys and glamour of the discerning air passenger. I’ve been officially Cheltenhamised – I’m snobby and proud of it, so you can take your gin and cokes and stick ‘em up your nylon wraps. I’m a cultured lady, a Hendricks and Fevertree kinda gal, pure silk and natural fibres only… Fast forward to my last night in Newcastle, wearing my new chiffon (posh nylon) blouse, swigging shots (gin with a coke chaser) and dancing on the bar with Dave the Stag. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you can take the girl out of Newcastle... CS

HOLIDAY PACKING TIPS… • Ignore all the magazines - Don’t take a capsule wardrobe; instead pack loads of outfits. How boring will it be to look back on your photos five years later and have the same outfit on every day? Short term cost – long term gain. • Do put in a glitzy outfit and heels. A Boden fleece and Crocs just won’t cut it at a yacht party… (I can dream can’t I?) • Ignore anything on the cosmetic counter which promises a glow – You’ll just look like you’re menopausal with a hot sweat coming on. Same goes for tousled hair – at 24, bed hair looks amazing – at 44, the look is more slattern than sexy. You need done hair. • Do pack earplugs – It will drown out the sound of crying and vomiting – from the adults, not children. • Don’t leave wooden shoe trees in when you pack your case. They weigh a lot* *cited from experience.

I would love to hear from you! Please write to me, Amanda Toner (maiden name Surtees!) via editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

When Kelly from Ingleside House mentioned how much she loved The Great Gatsby book and would love some unique and alternative vintagestyle images to promote her fabulous venue, we thought it would be a great idea to put together a shoot that combines classic Roaring Twenties fashions with today's edgier and more urban look, hence the brightly coloured hair and lighting and the odd tattoo thrown in for good measure! I love high fashion, so we approached it from that perspective and I think the results speak for themselves - the feedback we've had so far has been fantastic. Page 59

GATSBY GLAMOUR There’s nothing more elegant than a classic vintage wedding. And there are many reasons why vintage can work to your advantage for your Special Day… “The key to a successful vintage wedding is that the beauty is in the detail”, says Clare, Manor By The Lake’s Wedding Consultant. “Subtle details and little touches are the key. Vintage is a great choice for couples looking for simple elegance, who want to avoid the extravagance of a more modern wedding.” Manor By The Lake, in Cheltenham, is one of Gloucestershire’s best-kept secrets. Currently undergoing a grand restoration, including the addition of a West Wing Ballroom and 12 en-suite luxury bedrooms, the wedding team are currently booking private viewings for excited future brides-to-be, to show off this hidden gem and reveal the plans. Being a 19th centuary mansion, Manor By The Lake provides a natural setting for a Victorian wedding. The building oozes romance, class and grace, which are the underlying themes across all vintage weddings, regardless of the chosen era. “A lot of couples these days are opting for themed weddings,” adds Nichola, Manor By The Lake’s Wedding Manager. “A truly unique way to achieve a vintage themed wedding is to offer guests Afternoon Tea. Vintage cars are also a beautiful touch. They certainly add a sense of grandeur to the whole event and look great against our stunning Victorian manor for wedding photographs.” Vintage weddings allow an opportunity for people to be transported back in time. The elegant feel of past decades creates an atmosphere of nostalgia. A current exciting era for a vintage wedding is the 1920’s. With the release this year of the film The Great Gatsby, we are seeing more flapper dresses, glamourously embellished headpieces and classic cocktails becoming a feature of weddings. For many brides, a vintage wedding also allows them the opportunity to keep things simple, without neglecting

JUNE 2013

“BEAUTY IS IN THE DETAIL”

elegance. Pastel colours allow for soft femininity and great scope for some of the most beautiful floral arrangements. A vintage wedding dress allows the bride to fulfill every girl’s desire of wearing a truly unique piece on her wedding day. The natural fabrics, couture detailing and extravagant embellishments of vintage wedding dresses allows the bride experience true luxury on her wedding day, deprived of the extensive price tag of a new design of similar quality. “Our vintage themes tend to be more popular for our smaller weddings.” says Clare, “More intimate weddings allow bigger scope for many more personal touches.” Clare’s vision of a vintage wedding includes a natural colour scheme, letting the trimmings do the talking, “A vintage

theme allows for the smaller touches to create a big effect. For a vintage wedding here at Manor By The Lake we can provide everything from vintage crockery, bunting and parasols to vintage wedding signage. A really great way to capture the feel of your chosen era is by incorporating a themed menu. This could be anything from a classic Hog Roast or a traditional British High Tea, to an extravagant ‘feast’.” Manor By The Lake prides themselves on their ability to host both larger wedding parties and more intimate weddings, due to their stunning collection of oak-paneled, stained-glass adorned rooms of varying sizes, complete with large marble fireplaces. It is the perfect setting for a vintage wedding! Director, John Preston notes, “we like to cater for a variety of customers and budgets but the one common factor is an appreciation of aesthetics as much as practicality. We ask our clients to visualise in their minds what they want out of their event in terms of theme, décor and ambience, and to approach us with these ideas. We then take into account practical considerations such as terrain of the venue, number of guests and access etc. The result being a tailored tent and styling to suit individual needs, both aesthetically and practically.”

GATSBY GLAMOUR

Our Love Affair with Vintage Weddings

BY NATALIE LETCH

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRACEY SALT

The love affair with all things vintage, particularly in the wedding world, would have been difficult to miss and is a love that will not be diminishing any time soon. Brides and grooms are bypassing contemporary style and instead embracing a bygone era. There are so many to choose from that you are simply spoiled for choice! The nostalgia attached to the past is something that we can all identify with and the desire to be individual, reflecting your personalities as a couple, is more important than ever. There is so much inspiration for you to choose from and local suppliers offer extremely high quality services that will cater to your vintage desires. Do you fancy indulging in the decadent glamour of The Great Gatsby and channelling your inner Daisy Buchanan, adorning yourself in pearls, a fanciful headdress with a flapper style wedding dress?

Maybe the figure-hugging style of the 50’s, or the sultry swinging Mad Men 60’s is what you envision...Whatever the era, there is a style that suits all shapes and caters for all tastes. Whether it’s vintage inspired or antique, there is an ever increasing range of vintage suppliers who will not only style you, but your venue, too. The build-up to and subsequent release of The Great Gatsby has made 1920’s fans out of most of us. The visual elements of the book are so vivid and will, undoubtedly, fuel inspiration and result in an elevated presence of 20’s themed weddings across the globe. Let’s be honest, The Great Gatsby is probably one of the most iconic pieces of classic literature that the wedding industry adores to recreate. So, achieving the quintessential 20’s soirée, or indeed, a vintage affair that has echoes of the past

in varying styles is easier than ever. Art Deco is an era that spanned from the Roaring 1920’s through to the 1930’s and exuded glamour and grandeur. The theme can be embraced in its entirety or by simply adopting key elements, giving your wedding a vintage twist. One of the most eye-catching ways of incorporating a 20’s theme is through your bridal attire. The styling was very glamorous and slinky, dresses were short, flapper style or full length. Hair can be styled in an up-do: finger curls, waves, or a side sweep and embellished with a delicate vintage hair piece, head band or birdcage veil. The theme, of course, can be continued into the boudoir, with a range of vintage inspired silk lingerie and nightwear - not only a treat for you but a gift to your husband-to-be too. The versatile range of vintage inspired fashion and accessories means that you can revel in period fashion - sparkle and pearl embellishments can be as outlandish, or as subtle, as you fancy. ‘Vintage’ as a theme also lends itself perfectly to a handmade wedding. Enlisting the help of friends, family and local suppliers will really give you a quirky and unique edge to your day and is easily achievable. Of course, hiring a glamorous venue such as Manor By The Lake or The Daffodil will provide the perfect setting, alongside the Jazz sounds of the past, instantly. Incorporating some or all vintage elements that you most admire from the past will be a key way to ensure your day is quirky and unique resulting in a true ‘WOW’ factor at your day, for the right reasons! So, what are you waiting for? Go, and be inspired and indulge in Gatsby Glamour. CS Images courtesy of Chanticleer www.chanticleerbrides.co.uk

23/05/2013

A word from Tamsin... The set design is based around the idea of ‘The Egg Thief ’ which is an imaginative, surreal story which I created from the inspiration of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Shona Heath, Tim Walker and The Birds (Hitchcock). The story I wanted to create is of a spoiled little girl climbing into a bird box to steal the eggs. As she steals the eggs the owl looks in as she tries to hide whilst stealing/breaking the eggs. I wanted the girl to portray a spoiled brat look therefore the contrast in the clothes and the set but also the contrast in the clothes (pastels) and her personality. I wanted the lighting to be as if it was night, with shards of light peering into the bird box but I wanted it to have a sinister/foreboding feeling like most fairytales do and this is where I took my inspiration from The Birds (Hitchcock). I wanted this set design to become a story or a moment which doesn’t exist but for a second it makes you believe.

Art Couture Painswick welcomes new sponsors

Art Couture Painswick is run entirely by volunteers, and being a registered charity makes no profit. So how do they manage to put on such an amazing show each year? Because they receive very generous support from individuals, local businesses and major companies man, Good Energy provided transport around the village by rickshaws and Mondo Salon presented some amazing hair artistry. And Fabric Architecture provided their fabulous structure over the stage, which had arrived fresh from Buckingham Palace and the Jubilee celebrations. Brewin Dolphin is the latest company to sign up as a Headline Sponsor for Art Couture Painswick, and they are offering significant support in the coming months. A well-known local Gloucestershire company, Renishaw is one of the Festival sponsors. As a recognised world leader in dimensional metrology, the company boasts that innovation is its mantra. Renishaw has just been announced as a winner of the Queen’s Award to Industry for Innovation. They have seen the opportunity to provide an amazing new prize trophy, using state-ofthe-art 3D printing to create a ‘wearable trophy’. A fabulous mix of art, technology and manufacturing skills. Blushes salon is also joining in the fun,

Local people are very involved with their festival: more than 100 volunteers help during the festival itself, and there is a committed group of about 20 people who work hard all year to make things happen. People are also invited to join as Members and donate annual contributions which help to keep a regular income stream going, and many local businesses provide money to fund prizes, entertainment, printing costs and many unexciting but inevitable expenses. To cover the costs of such a huge enterprise, though, needs direct sponsorship and this year Art Couture Painswick is very happy to announce the involvement of local companies including Brewin Dolphin, Renishaw, Blushes, BPE Solicitors and Good Energy as well as The Falcon and The Royal Oak – two wonderful Painswick pubs. Of course, this being Art Couture Painswick, sponsors get inspired to be inventive and join in the fun. Last year Mandarin Stone commissioned a body painting of a rather gorgeous marble

and 20 of their staff will be around on the day to help to sell admission bracelets to visitors and will doubtless be looking the part too. Good Energy are once again contributing their exciting ideas, and will create a trophy that they will donate for the creation they judge to be the best use of recycled materials. Art Couture Painswick is grateful to all its supporters in many capacities, from cash and in-kind donations to the willing and eager help from volunteers through the year and on the Festival day. It’s part of what makes them special. CS

AT THE EVERYMAN THEATRE

A very entertaining evening at the Everyman Theatre with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. The excellent programme was divided into three parts, the first ‘lyric pieces’ commissioned in 2012, beautifully danced to piano accompaniment. The second, called ‘Bite-size Ballet’ was three classical pas de deux, again superbly danced. The third and final part was a very lively and humorous excerpt from Pineapple Poll. The music was by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. A thoroughly enjoyable performance with a full audience in Cheltenham’s beautiful Everyman Theatre. Who could ask for more? Attended by Anita Claridge. Laura Leigh

Laura Leigh looks at three key summer hair trends and the products that go with them

Style: Poker Straight The key to this look is to get your hair glossy and healthy. Apply Luxe oil from the mid-lengths to the ends of the hair and blow-dry the hair smooth. Take sections of hair two inches thick and straighten from the top to the tip. Be on trend with a middle parting.

Luxe Oil – £25.00 Uses a reconstructive transform technology that benefits hair from inside and out. Transforms the texture of your hair and leaves it up to ten times smoother.

Style: Loose Waves Easy and effortless! Prep your hair with a volumizing mousse such as Mousse Forte and rough-dry or dry with a diffuser. Part the hair in the centre and tuck neatly behind your ears. Massage the roots to create a bit of volume and a tousled texture!

Mousse Forte – £19.60 Provides hold to build volume that stays soft to the touch.

Style: Volume A wonderful look for the summer! It’s easy to create bounce and life in your hair by using Thickefy Foam before blowdrying. Then backcomb at the roots and gently tease the hair to maintain the height. For a chic spring look pull the hair back into a high ponytail, keeping the sides sleek and super shiny.

Thickefy Foam – £20.50 Weightless flexible styler creates the look and feel of naturally thick and voluminous hair. Its liquid- to- foam technology increases volume for long-lasting body and pliable hold.

health

Gut instinct GUT HEALTH – We don’t like to talk about it but read here to understand just why it is so important.... WITH LAURA MILNE Your gut is so, so important; it is the pivot of your health. Did you know that 85% of your immune system is in your gut? Your gut is designed to protect your body from foreign toxins that enter the body; a poorly gut equals a poor immune system. Signs of a weakened digestive system can range from constipation, bloating, cramps, diarrhoea, flatulence and now unfortunately IBS is so common. You think it is the norm to have symptoms like these and you just deal with them… It is not normal or fun. I am pleased to say you can help heal your gut and reduce your symptoms dramatically or even have them vanish completely. Another interesting fact is that 90% of nutrient absorption takes place in the small intestines. If you suffer from the symptoms above then you are likely to have some form of vitamin or mineral deficiencies to and this can lead onto so many health issues and problems such as cancers, heart disease, infertility, Alzheimer’s the list goes on. Lets look at the foreign particles that your gut protects you from… these include the food toxins as mentioned in last months article on The Liver Cleanse; Dairy, wheat/gluten, caffeine, processed foods, additives, alcohol and sugar. They all play havoc with the levels of

LAURA MILNE Body & Health Coach 07737209523 www.glosladiesgethealthy.co.uk www.finalfitnessformula.com • 2013 Finalist Gloucestershire Women in Business

good and bad bacteria in your gut and as does an array of other things especially antibiotics and medications. These foreign particles are extremely destructive in your gut and can make tiny holes in your gut lining; this is called Leaky Gut Syndrome (no one wants a leaky gut). I am pretty sure a very high percentage of us have a leaky gut to some degree. With a leaky gut small particles of the food you consume, bad bacteria, toxins and others substances can leak from your gut into your blood stream. Your immune system fires up and works tirelessly to deal with these foreign bodies. If the holes are not repaired your immune system is on a constant battle and this can really make you ill, tired, fatigued and generally feeling not good at all. CS

HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR GUT 1) Dramatically reduce the food toxins or better still complete a 14 day liver cleanse as explained in April’s edition or check out my blog. 2) Take a teaspoon of glutamine powder with water twice a day – It helps repair and heal the gut wall lining. 3) Gut flora – increase your good bacteria in your gut and I don’t mean take an actimel. Actimel has added sugar, preservatives and sweeteners. Buy a good quality live Probiotic supplement or increase fermented foods. 4) Increase Prebiotic foods – prebiotics help feed probiotics to keep the gut healthy. Foods include Jerusalem artichokes, onions, garlic and chicory. 5) Drink plenty of water.

NO PASTA LASAGNE I always get asked what do I have instead of pasta, rice, bread etc…believe me there are so many choices (millions). I have lots of great ideas in my cookbooks. INGREDIENTS 750ml jar of Pasatta 450g mince beef 1 onion 1 large carrot, cubed 2-3 courgettes, cut into thin long ribbons (use a peeler) 1 lemon 100g goats cheese Lots of fresh basil 2 garlic cloves Black pepper 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme A handful of pine nuts (optional) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Pan fry 1 onion, garlic, thyme and chopped onion for 5 mins then add the carrots for a further 5 mins. 2. In a separate pan, brown the mince and drain the fat 3. Add the mince to the onions, the Pasatta and juice of one lemon 4. Roughly chop lots of basil and add to the pan. Simmer for 10 mins 5. In a lasagna dish place just a third of the meat mixture in the pan 6. Then add a layer of the courgette ribbons/slices. Repeat again with the third layer on top. 7. Scatter with the goats cheese and pine nuts and baked in the oven for around 20-30 minutes.

Aspiring artists take centre stage PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY MURRELL

THE 2ND ANNUAL COUTTS COWLEY MANOR ARTS AWARD SUPPORTING YOUNG TALENT FROM THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART The Royal College of Art sculpture exhibition is available to view at Cowley Manor until September 2013 Following a successful inaugural year, the 2nd annual Coutts Cowley Manor Arts Award (CCMA), showcases the emerging talent of young British artists from the world famous Royal College of Art (RCA). The outdoor sculpture exhibition and competition is set in the 55 acres of Grade II listed gardens at Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds, and features pieces which have been carefully vetted by a prestigious panel of judges. The award fosters young talent by funding both materials and tutoring for the artists, while exposing them to the reputable panel of judges who have been hand-selected by Coutts and Cowley Manor. This year’s panel boasts an impressive list of highly regarded collectors and artists, including Millicent Wilner, Director at the Gagosian Gallery in London, John Swannell, reputed

photographer, artists Mat Collishaw and Polly Morgan, sculptor Richard Hudson, local entrepreneur Kuldip Singh Dhillon, and Peter and Jessica Frankopan, owners of A Curious Group of Hotels. Providing a strong support for the arts and the RCA in particular, the award also presents an opportunity for students to create a commercial commission, as the winning sculpture will be purchased for permanent display within the grounds of Cowley Manor. On 28th January the panel met to select the finalists whose sculptures would be on show from May – September 2013. The winner was selected on 7th May, the launch of the exhibition, following a panel review and judging of the finalists. The theme of the exhibition will once again celebrate the past, present and future of Cowley Manor, from its original Italianate design, to the more

whimsical connection to Lewis Carroll and his best known book Alice in Wonderland, and as it is today, the quintessential, contemporary country house hotel and spa. Christine Wadley, Director for Coutts in Cheltenham, commented: “Coutts has a long-standing history of championing the creative industries, and have looked after many clients from within the art and design world for many decades. We recognise and support British design excellence in order to aid growth and foster future British talent. This partnership with Cowley Manor and the RCA is further evidence of this.” CS For more information about A Curious Group of Hotels & Cowley Manor please visit www.curioushotels.com & www.cowleymanor.com

The National Star College Midsummer Night’s Dream Ball

s

A star-studded ball has raised £35,000 for the National Star Foundation to support young people with complex disabilities. More than 280 people attended the Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed ball held in a marquee in the grounds of National Star College. Dr Dawn Harper, local GP and presenter of Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies welcomed guests which included former England rugby champion Phil Vickery, Countryfile

presenter Adam Henson and Cotswolds-based designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. The most popular auction prize was a week’s stay at a Cornish cottage owned by Laurence and Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen. The Foundation raises money to provide facilities and much-needed equipment. Every year National Star College supports more than 1600 people. “Our Star Ball raised a fabulous amount and we thank all those who 7

attended and supported this, our most important fundraiser of the year,” said Kate Green, Director of Fundraising at the Foundation. “If you missed out don’t worry you can join in the fun by taking part in our Be a Star for a Day fundraising event on June 7.” To find out how to take part in Star for the day, contact Rachel Hurring on 01242 524478 or email rhurring@natstar.ac.uk. Father’s Day this year falls on Sunday 16th June, and as it approaches I find myself caught in the usual dilemma... whether to give voice to my natural and long held cynicism or soften my attitude and embrace the occasion. It was easy to declare I wanted nothing to do with such a fabricated festival of fatherhood when my children were too young to understand, and any gesture of celebration needed to be instigated by my partner. Yet now that my two are old enough to be affected by television advertising, popular culture and the peer pressure of school activities, I’m just not so sure. I can’t personally seem to remember making such a fuss of this date in the past. Unfortunately my father died nearly fifteen years ago but the understated and undemonstrative person that he was meant that there was no fanfare on Father’s Day. I may have made a card in school but in my later childhood years I

can hardly remember marking the date in any way. These days switch the television on, visit a supermarket or drive past a pub or restaurant and you are likely to be bombarded with reminders of the oncoming date and your obligation to get involved. So what attitude to adopt? I certainly feel my children aren’t quite ready to understand the concept that we don’t need a specific date to celebrate all that our fathers do. The same as for St. Valentine’s Day for lovers and Mother’s Day for mothers. Appreciation should be a three hundred and sixty five day a year approach to all our relationships, and physical gestures of gratitude should be spontaneous, unprompted and random in their timing, not forced by obligation to a date. I’m not sure all adults would agree with the above sentiment, let alone sitting down a four year old and six year old and expecting them to understand and agree. Therefore I am duty bound to show some enthusiasm. The challenge is to capture the spirit of the occasion in a simple and noncommercial way. By that I mean I don’t expect any money to be spent, yet the things that could be presented as gifts may be priceless. I’m happy to accept anything made in school or nursery, an extra hour of lie-in or to indulge in a hobby of my choice and perhaps most importantly some extra good behaviour throughout the day are all things high on my wish list as a father every day of the year. If any combination of these is presented on the day, I’ll be a happy man. I’ll spare a thought at some point during the day for my father, but providing a grateful and happy response to anything my children can produce will be my main goal on the date, as seeing them happy is the greatest gift I could surely ever receive. I’ll keep the cynicism (or what the other half simply calls ‘misery’) for future years. CS JUNE 2013

business

Creating investment

OPPORTUNITIES Brian Morman, CEO of Brunsdon, tells us what prompted the company to launch its own range of investment funds Are you happy with the return on your savings? Have your financial investments been doing well lately? In the current economic climate the answer to those questions may well be ‘No.’ If you are a financial services company, with a responsibility to do the best for your clients, you might want to do something about that. That’s why, back in 2011, Brunsdon made a bold move into the investment arena. CS Brian, that’s a big step to take. Was it a difficult process?

BM The decision to do it was easy, but the process was very difficult. Even way before 2011 we were really disappointed with the performance of investments. The credit crunch had started to bite and investments were losing value rapidly. We knew there had to be an alternative solution and with our experience and determination, we could probably find it. We spent a couple of years researching the market, and it has to be said, doing some pretty tough talking to various investment managers. In the event we were pleased to team up with Standard Life Wealth, one of the most respected investment managers in the business, and Investment Fund Services Ltd. (IFSL), well known for their excellent fund hosting capabilities, and were ready to launch two funds – the IFSL Brunsdon Adventurous Growth Fund and the IFSL Brunsdon Cautious Growth Fund – in October 2011. CS So what makes the IFSL Brunsdon Funds special?

BM In-built volatility management has a lot to do with it. Let me put it like this. If you were to ask serious investors to compile a wish list of the qualities they’d like to see in an investment, then

JUNE 2013

volatility management would be high on the list, so that performance would still be acceptable even when the markets are erratic. They’d also like the funds to be actively managed on a daily basis and of course they’d like the fund charges to be competitive. And if they also had access to institution funds not normally available to private investors, so much the better! These funds tick all those boxes. CS Have the Funds lived up to your expectations?

BM Yes. The results speak for themselves. If you look at Bloomberg, the global provider of real-time financial news and information, up to the end of March this year, the IFSL Brunsdon Adventurous Growth Fund has returned a very solid 11.9% since launch (6% for the period 31 March 2012 to 31 March 2013), whilst the IFSL Brunsdon Cautious Growth Fund has achieved 9.4% (3.60%, 31 March 2012 to 31 March 2013). And what makes these results even better is that these are the returns after fund charges have been deducted! CS So does that mean you can now sit back and relax and just let the Funds do their work?

BM Not at all. At Brunsdon we have a very active hands-on investment committee that continually monitors the Funds – and keeps the fund managers on their toes! It’s important that we ensure the Funds continually deliver to the mandate we set way back at the beginning, certainly in terms of volatility management, because that’s what’s made them so successful so far. In just 18 months, we have about £34,000,000 invested in the IFSL Brunsdon Funds.

And as the Funds grow, we’ll be able to reduce the charges – reductions that will be passed on to our clients and make the investments even more attractive. CS Finally, are the IFSL Brunsdon Funds suitable for everyone?

BM As you know, all financial investments carry some risk. Values can go down as well as up and returns cannot be guaranteed. They may not be suitable for very low risk or very high risk investors. Both Funds can be blended to achieve a balanced investment but of course we’d be very happy to talk to anyone interested in learning more about our Funds. women in business

A woman in a man’s world? Having trained for a career in the media and following several years working in radio, Marie Carter is now Cheltenham Town FC’s Marketing Manager and is a joy to meet. Marie is confident without being pushy in any way and has the kind of friendly demeanour that has obviously got her to where she is today. Marie always wanted to become a television presenter and following the completion of a Media Production degree, she spent six months working in PR in London. Home for Marie was Wiltshire and she admits, “I am a country bumpkin at heart and didn’t really like London to be honest! I returned to Salisbury and worked for the local radio station. I then moved to Cheltenham and worked as a presenter and journalist, but really wanted to be involved more in the business side. I wanted to go down the business route.” Marie went on to become MD of Cat FM and then made a sideways move into a regional role. “It just wasn’t what I really wanted to do”, she says “I had built up a strong relationship with CTFC and so when the role became available here it was absolutely the right thing to do. At that point in time, around eleven years ago, Steve Cotterill had got the club to the play-offs and there was a huge buzz around the club as a whole. I knew nothing about football! But that went in my favour. The Directors of the club were looking for somebody who knew the local business community well and I certainly brought that to the table!”

This month we speak with Marie Carter, Marketing Manager at Cheltenham Town Football Club...

“We have a board of seven Directors here and they do a fantastic job of operating the club. I am very lucky within my role and have been granted the freedom to really drive the commercial aspects of the club forward. I did actually leave for three years to raise my two daughters, but returned last year. We place great emphasis on family here and we are a great choice for family days out.” Marie’s focus is now to keep doing what she has been doing. “It may sound silly, but you don’t have to love football to enjoy CTFC as a brand. We have superb grounds here and are a great choice for business days out. Plus the food is great!” CS

business

‘BYOD’ boon or booby trap for your business Nick Rowntree, Operations Director at Jatech, the Stonehouse based software development company, reflects on the trend of employees using their own mobile devices in the workplace and how to avoid the pitfalls Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a trend that is rapidly gathering pace where staff of organisations are bringing their own mobile devices, iPads, smartphones and tablets to work and – wanting to access business resources - emails, files and applications. The first thought of the owner could well be that this is positive as sales people have access to emails and information at customer sites. Also there could be a positive image created with the customer they are visiting because the use of latest technology is being used. However we are basically introducing consumer devices into the business environment and these consumer devices, by default, have consumer security. So, with a traditional Microsoft infrastructure, which is designed to provide secure access to the company resources, the use of a secure password that must be changed after a certain time period is enforced by the server. This means that to access every laptop or desktop, a password is required. The same is true of business based mobile devices such as the Blackberry. Whereas the consumer devices by default do not need a password to access them and when the password for the email access is set the first time, it, by default, provides unlimited access to the business email account just by touching the email icon. So, your salesperson leaves their mobile device at the potential customer and on the device is an email with all of your pricing calculations on. Or, the employee with the personal mobile device loses it in the street and it is found by some tech savvy but JUNE 2013

mischievous children who decide to send a rather impolite email to all your staff and customers. Then there is the case of the employee who leaves – you can be handed the laptop back with all of the company information on but what about the mobile device? So, do we ban all BYOD and potentially upset some of our most valuable and productive employees? As in all business decisions, the key is to have good plan of what you want to achieve with BYOD, how to secure the devices, what they are allowed to access and then what to do if a disaster happens. With the technology industry responding to these concerns it is now possible from the server to force that a password must be used every time a user wants to access the companies email from a mobile device. Access to business information can be controlled by using your own company

‘app’ on the device that again needs a password to access. Software can be used that, if a device is lost or stolen, it will notify the device and delete all of the information on the device so that thieves cannot use the device inappropriately or access confidential information. So with the right plan your employees can use their own devices to support their business activities and you can be sure in the knowledge that your confidential information is secure. Jatech is an IT company that has been advising on network and computer security over the past 15 years in the Gloucestershire area. So to put your fears at rest and get in contact for an initial discussion on securing your computer systems so BYOD devices can be used. business This is why GFirst LEP is working on a number of projects, as part of our commitment to helping students find their path and to helping the county’s businesses attract the best young talent. After going to art school, I set out to gain first-hand experience of the business world. I worked for a range of different types and sizes of organisation, at times employed and at times self-employed. My ‘big break’ came when I retrained in finance and joined Gloucestershire firm Cult LLP in 1991, a company still in its infancy. In 2010, as Chief Operating Officer, I took the business – now known as SuperGroup – to full flotation on the London Stock Exchange and into the FTSE 250. It was one of my proudest moments. I know from my own experiences that Gloucestershire is an exciting place to do business. There’s a wealth of new and exciting opportunities in the county, and competition for jobs among young people is fierce. Those with grit and determination can reap the rewards, but only if they have the right skills to do so. The good news is that GFirst LEP is helping young people gain these skills, and at the same time ensuring that the pool of young talent is continually restocked for local firms. We are working closely with Gloucestershire’s schools, colleges and

Helping young people suceed As a child I dreamed of being a dentist, before a moment of clarity came with a realisation I don’t like the sight of blood. People often assume I wanted to go into retail, but my career choice wasn’t so straightforward and I know there are many young people in Gloucestershire today in the same boat... universities to ensure we are collectively meeting the needs of our students and businesses. Young people can learn a lot, and find their own niche, by talking to ‘old hands’ and getting stuck in with work experience. Last year we ran a range of schools and business pilots to do just that. For one we teamed up with Moog, a global engineering company based in Tewkesbury, along with Tewkesbury School. Teachers spent time at Moog to see how the business worked and how their curriculum could be adapted to prepare

students for the needs of business. It was such a success that the Moog Academy has now launched, with students from the school visiting the company to get to grips with business and learn from the experts. This year we have launched Challenge 2013, a project to get 2,013 primary school children involved in science, engineering, technology and maths throughout the year. Working with around 40 primary schools and six county-based engineering and manufacturing firms, the aim is to get school children inspired by engineering and technology and give them a taste of working in this industry. We have already exceeded our target and I’m convinced Challenge 2013 is proving such a success because of the support and enthusiasm of the schools and business people involved. As a business community, we want our young people to thrive. So we must play our part in ensuring that they have the skills and experience we are looking for. Work experience placements, giving an hour to take part in practice interviews or letting your local school take a tour of your firm – it is all part of the broader picture of growing Gloucestershire’s economy. CS If you want to help inspire the next generation of leaders in your industry, visit www.gloslep.co.uk to find out more. Barbara Jordan, Divorce and Family Lawyer answers your questions...

Q

I have been married to my husband for 30 years and am 55 years of age. My husband left one year ago and our two children are now independent. My own financial position is very poor, as I do not work. I have not had to work since the children were small because my husband is the major shareholder in his family business. This is doing extremely well and I think that it is likely to do even better in the future. I have been told that where couples divorce after a long marriage of more than 20 years there should be an equal division of assets and an equality of outcome, but my husband is saying that he should be entitled to more than 50% of both our assets, which include his shareholding in the business, and his income. He argues that he has made more of a contribution to the business than I have, that it would damage the family business if he were to pay me a large lump sum and that the company will inevitably grow in the future when we are no longer together. Is his argument correct?

A

It may well be that the Court will look favourably on some of your husband's argument.

It is true that in the year 2000 Lord Justice Thorpe stated that in the case of a long marriage the Court should take as a start point an equal division of assets and an equality of outcome, but this is certainly not an order that every Court will always make in the case of a marriage of more than 20 years.

In the case of R–v–R at the end of last year, the husband argued that the company in which he had shares could simply not afford to pay his wife sufficient to allow her a share of future profits of the business and that any significant payment out from the business would be damaging.

The Judge made a number of rulings and comments in this regard. She firstly took the view that Mrs R would continue to benefit from the increased profits of the company if she received an on-going maintenance payment from her husband and that that in itself would cover off the wife's argument in relation to future profits.

The Judge accepted that an immediate payment out of the company may be impossible and gave some thought to the wife's request for some of the husband's shares to be transferred to her. However, the Judge decided against this instead deciding that the wife should be awarded a lump sum to be paid by instalments and secured by way of company loan notes to be issued in the wife's favour. Only if the husband failed to raise capital, as ordered, would the Court award shares to Mrs R of a value equivalent to any outstanding value of those loan notes. In this way the Court sought to take account of both the husband and the wife's concerns.

travel

Not just royals… I love spuds and a trip to the stunning island of Jersey offered me an opportunity to chomp my way through a veritable barrow - load of Jersey Royals. It’s a ‘potato fest’ not to be missed, as these beauties are right in season right up to the end of June… and where better to enjoy them than on Jersey itself ? Long- haul travel has become tedious; the essential security checks, the delays, time differences, the Euro and the Dollar. I could go on. How good is it that with just a 20 minute check-in at Gloucestershire Airport and then with only an hour’s flight you can be on the idyllic Island of Jersey. Trust me; it’s a world away from Cheltenham or Gloucester. Jersey is a beautifully sculpted Island with its own government and traditions, but still retains proud links (and the pound) with the United Kingdom. The beaches on Jersey are just sublime. They’re almost clinically clean, with sand that’s yellow and feels likes sand. Not like some beaches I could mention where you get a ‘builders yard’ with seaweed. Jersey is the most southerly Island in the British Isles. It sits just fourteen miles off the French coast, so therefore has a large slice of French influence which manifests itself in some really top- notch restaurants and food. The range and choice of eateries on the island is incredible. Being stuck for choice won’t be a dilemma, as there’s

JUNE 2013

Eric Barton takes a lingering look at the Island of Jersey

something for everyone; fine dining, casual al fresco by the ocean, or great gastro pubs producing a range of simple, but yet delicious food. It’s a pure melange of everything that’s good in food. The seafood in particular is utterly stunning in its freshness and preparation. Try the locally caught lobster, simply prepared with some jersey royals and a side salad. You’ll be in gastronomic heaven. You’ll be amazed at the choice of beaches and coastal walks to be had on Jersey. Whether it’s just kicking - back and topping up the tan, or a good old trudge around the many coastal paths, Jersey has got the lot. My particular favourites are St Aubins and The Old Courthouse Restaurant which is just ten minutes outside St Helier (the islands capital). St Brelades Bay, which has a broad, sweeping, long sandy beach is also worth a visit. It’s almost Caribbean in looks. Just stunning. There’s also a plethora of perfectly crafted little harbours and villages to visit with their own character and history. And for the more energetic; the island also offers great diving and sport fishing. Jersey produces a number of festivals throughout the year. Look out for the

Battle of Flowers in August which is one of the best carnivals in Europe. Also, there’s the Seaside Festival which celebrates the islands close connection with all things marine. I travelled with Citywing from Gloucestershire Airport. The flight was quick, easy, very relaxing and on time. Citywing fly to Jersey from Gloucestershire Airport every Saturday mid – morning, which is very civilised and a perfect prelude for a weeks’ stay on the Island. Prices start at a very reasonable £84.95 with no credit card fees, booking fees or fuel surcharges. Oh… and parking for passengers is free at Gloucestershire Airport, How good is that? No need to troll up or down to either Birmingham or Bristol to get away for that relaxing week in a little slice of heaven that also champions the spud. Can’t be bad. The

Good Life

This month Mandy Hall, our monthly Cotswold Farm Park columnist, would like to introduce you to her ‘farm family’… PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRAIG DERRICK

As well as all of our amazing animals, we have our shop, a campsite, a fantastic restaurant and cafe, the adventure playground…the list is endless…so as well as all the people you meet when you visit us, there are plenty of people behind the scenes – and they all have something different to offer. First up is Mike, our Livestock manager, who has worked on the farm for six years. He is sooo knowledgeable about all the livestock. He also assists Adam by preparing animals for display, filming on Countryfile and other media work – from Joules clothing adverts to Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood. He’s often telling me little snippets and funny stories about them all, as he knows pretty much all of their characters. For example, there’s a leader of our flock of Llynn Sheep (aptly named Lynn) who, when she reaches a gate, will stand on her hind legs and walk up the gate to look back to see if the others are all there.... How funny is that? Andy assists Mike and is one of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. He's unique, so patient, kind and knowledgeable, with an obvious love for all the animals. He's an excellent role model for all of us, as he has a very special way about him, a way of making you understand and remember things. We all have so much respect for him, that as a token of our appreciation we bought him a crook recently, to help him catch wandering animals. If you see either of them when JUNE 2013

visiting the farm, please do stop and talk to them if there is anything you need to know. There are seven of us on the Display Team, supported by weekend and holiday staff to help with our busiest times. I love how we’re all so passionate about the Farm Park and our animals. Alastair, our manager has rustled up some fab new ideas, including the recently launched conservation area and he is working with our deputy manager, Liz, to develop our school activities. Alastair often gets mistaken for Adam, as he also has ginger hair! Fran is a top girl, who has her own flock of sheep on her family farm, along with cows, chicken and dogs. She's very knowledgeable and has taught me so much over the past year. She has her own Nubian goat at the Farm Park, which she adopted and named Baby. Baby used to call out to her and follow her everywhere, but over the winter months, Baby grew up and had a romantic liaison – and recently produced two kids! One of them, named Nom Nom by Fran, is now one of our pet goat kids that our visitors love to bottle feed.

Dan has a great sense of humour, which we all find amusing. He's a dab hand at catching chickens, especially at this time of year, when its sunny and most of the chickens are reluctant to go in. He plays rugby and I'm sure he has transferred his skills to the chicken catching. He's also mad about horses, so we both share this passion. Matt has a degree in animal welfare and behaviour. His favourite animals are the ducks and ducklings, he’s excellent at public demonstrations and super duper fit, having just completed the London Marathon. Like the rest of the team, he’s great fun. They all make a rainy and bitterly cold day a happy one… I look forward to getting to know our newest team members Liam, Katie, Sooz and Laura as the season continues! Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter @mandyfarmpark for all the latest farm updates! CS The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. Our daily milking and shearing demonstrations are now in full swing, so come and see for yourself. For more information visit www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk

restaurant review

The Bell at Stow Reviewed by renowned racehorse trainer, Kim Bailey The Bell at Stow has undergone a complete refurbishment and a change of ownership since I last poked my nose through the front door of this fine old pub. It seems to be the norm nowadays that the majority of pubs go gastro, with rooms to stay in and The Bell is no exception. Stow on the Wold is full of good eating establishments and places to say, so the competition is certainly hot in this small little market town in the middle of Gloucestershire. The Bell, under its new ownership, is fronted by the hugely welcoming and mightily efficient Rachel Hawkins; Rachel will certainly guarantee a very warm and sincere welcome when you walk through the front door. You are already half way to enjoying yourself. A drink at the bar gives you a great chance to soak up the atmosphere and perhaps view other visitors in the open plan entrance area. You are bound to see somebody you know as it seems to be very popular, certainly with the under 40s! After your drink you need to attack the exciting menu. The choice is varied and different so you soon feel excited, and why not as the specials board is certainly worth a second look? For starters, the four of us settled JUNE 2013

for: crab, goat’s cheese and spring onion brulee with watercress and home baked soda bread; Salt and pepper squid, mango and green chilli dip; Brown shrimp on granary toast, poached duck egg and hollandaise and corned beef and caramelised onion hash. All passed the taste test. For the main course Jerk spiced swordfish steak, cucumber and mint yoghurt, pineapple salsa and sweet potato fries was a winner, as was the Canoed sea bass, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, potato gnocchi, tomato and basil sauce. We all chose fish as it was

hugely recommended and the Sea bream fillet, coconut lentils, crayfish samosa and sweet chilli and ginger sauce was good as was the pan-roasted cod, baby potatoes, chorizo, cherry tomatoes and parsley. You don’t have to worry about the menu as it has most of what you want on it. My waist line did not stretch for desserts although the chocolate fondue looked good as did Peanoffee pie. You will enjoy visiting the Bell as it has a great buzz about the place, helped by great friendly staff and food that just wanted eating. Yes, it is well worthwhile passing through the town of Stow on the Wold and stopping at The Bell as you leave the bottom of town. Don’t miss it as you will only regret it. The Bell is certainly more than capable of taking on all of its neighbouring restaurants; is Stow becoming a mini Ludlow? CS

A seasonal sensation with Food Writer Shelle Duffin Summer is on the horizon of the Cotswolds Hills and there’s plenty to get excited about. Giffords Circus have embarked on another one of their magical tours of local village greens across the Cotswolds, tickets are on sale for Cornbury Music Festival, The Wilderness and Jamie Oliver’s and Alex James’s ‘Big Feastival’; not to mention numerous food and cricket festivals, polo matches and horse trials. The first barbeques of 2013 have been lit and Pimms is now on special offer at

Waitrose – are you beginning to feel the vibe? All that’s needed now is some good weather and fine food to make the great British summer complete. Even though I’ve dreamt of having such power, unfortunately I cannot control the weather, no more than Michael Fish could; however I can assist with the food. At this time of year, with the lighter nights which on occasion are blessed with the warming glow of sunset, it’s all about alfresco dining. This year, the local butchers have come up trumps with meats for the barbeque and as a big supporter of local produce I’m not going to trample on their glory. Instead I am going to

provide you with a recipe for afters, a sweet seasonal sensation that will bring a ‘happily ever after’ to a summer meal. Cook’s note: In this recipe, I am using seasonal ingredients. As a culinary crusader, I like many of you relish the taste of British produce, taking pleasure and pride indulging in something produced on our own turf. In recent years, there has been a vast increase in cheap imports, having a dramatic effect on farmers and growers all over the UK. When I’m cooking, I try to use only seasonal ingredients – if I can’t get it from my local greengrocer or butcher, I’m less enthusiastic about using them.

So many people are put off making soufflés because they appear complex to make, often ending in disaster. I can assure you that this is a misconception, and one I myself have been deceived by on many occasions. This is an easy and simple dish to make, with deliciously mouth-watering results that will send a message to the taste buds that summer has arrived.

Makes 6 INGREDIENTS 300g raspberries 3tbsp elderflower liqueur (alternatively you can use cordial) 1tbsp cornflour 100g caster sugar 3 large egg whites Icing sugar for dusting 6 ramekins Butter, for greasing

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and place a baking tray in the oven to warm up 2. Grease each of the ramekins with a little butter 3. Put the raspberries into a saucepan and gently heat for 5 minutes until the fruit softens and has a ‘mushy’ consistency 4. Meanwhile in a bowl, mix the elderflower liqueur (or cordial) with the cornflour and stir until smooth 5. Add a little of the raspberry mixture to the cornflour; stirring well before pouring the cornflower into the pan with the raspberries 6. Stir on a medium heat until the mixture begins to thicken. Once the mixture has thickened, place to one side and leave to go completely cold 7. Using an electric whisk, mix the egg

whites together, adding a spoonful of sugar at a time until it has all been absorbed and the egg whites are stiff 8. Carefully stir in the cold raspberry mixture and mix until it has all combined together 9. Spoon the mixture equally into the ramekins and level the top to give each one a smooth surface 10. Place on the baking tray and put in the oven for 8 minutes, by which point the soufflés should have risen 11. Remove from the oven, dust with a little icing sugar and serve immediately with fresh raspberries and ice-cream or sorbet.

Summer! Here comes the

We need a summer, not just because you are all hoping to give the barbecue more of an airing this year than last and enjoy some super al fresco eating and drinking, but also because our English and Welsh winemakers need periods of continuous, consistent sunshine over the next few months. They need to ensure that 2013 is a harvest to remember, unlike 2012 which was dominated by wet and cool weather as we all know, resulting in producers making a lot less wine, although the quality was good. Perhaps surprising for you is the fact that, if everything goes to plan, in England and Wales this year around 7.5 million bottles of wine will be produced, up from 3 million bottles from the 2011 vintage! English and Welsh wines are rightly winning lots of accolades because we are making some of the best sparkling wines in the world here. Try these from producers like Nyetimber, Camel Valley, and Gusbourne Estate and, locally, Three Choirs www.threechoirs.com in Newent. If you are looking for an easy drinking white then try Three Choirs Coleridge Hill or Willow Brook, both at around 11% abv. Alternatively, have a taste of the excellent Bacchus – the best white variety for quality still whites in England – from Brightwell Vineyard in Wallingford www.brightwell.co.uk . Whilst the majority of production in England and Wales is of sparkling and white wines, there are good pink fizzes and still rosés too, with a few reds produced by specialists like Strawberry Hill Vineyards in Newent www.strawberryhillvineyard who make Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. So if you haven’t visited an English vineyard, then you definitely should, or alternatively come along to my Waitrose JUNE 2013

Wagers Dr L Riesling, Loosen Bros 2011, abv 8.5%, Mosel, Germany, £8.49. Stockist: Majestic Don’t ignore Wines from Germany and don’t ignore Riesling because this grape variety produces wines which will either age for a long time or are wonderfully fresh like this off dry, refreshing, citrus and floral white, which is a perfect Summer aperitif wine. Innocent Bystander Pinot Gris 2011, abv 12.5%,Yarra Valley, Australia, £13.69. Stockist: WineBear Dry, elegant, quality Aussie white, with lychee, apple and kiwi fruits. This is just right for those summer salads.

English Wines Masterclass at The Cheltenham Food and Drink Festival on Saturday 15th June, where I will be featuring wines from local producers like Three Choirs and Brightwell.

Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival 14th-16th June I love presenting at Food and Drink Festivals and last year, despite the weather, we had a great time with the wine masterclasses at The Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival which this year is on from 14th to 16th June www.gardenevents.com We are running wine masterclasses on all three days of the show and our wonderful wine journey will start on Friday at 12.30pm with Podere Sant’ Alberto wines from Tuscany and end on Sunday afternoon by

Aurora Pinot Noir Reserve 2012, abv 12.5%, Serra Gaûcha, Vinicola Aurora, Brazil, £9.99. Stockist: Stevens Garnier. Watch this space because there will be more wines from Brazil appearing in this column. This smooth, elegant, medium bodied red is low on tannins, with soft cherry fruit and could easily be served lightly chilled. Brouilly 2011, Henry Fessy, 12.5% abv, Beaujolais, France, £11.99 Stockist: Waitrose Erase Beaujolais Nouveau from your memory and try Beaujolais from a string of wonderful vintages in 2009, 2010 and 2011. This Brouilly, one of the 10 Beaujolais crus, is light, with vibrant, upfront strawberry fruit and cloves – just the quality, balanced red you need on hand for the summer season.

Celebrating with Wines of Brazil! In the meantime we’ll take a dash across South America with Santa Rita, taste Kleine Zalze wines from South Africa, Yealands Estate wines from New Zealand, head back to Europe to the under-rated world of Wines of Germany, taste some new grape varieties from some high quality producers from Croatia, then head to the innovative world of Spanish Wines, making sure you don’t miss out on some fabulous wines from Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley with Les Dauphins. If you like the sunshine join Birds with Bottle for some rosés and reds for Summer. Cheers! CS www.thewinetipster.co.uk twitter.com/TheWineTipster

Wine

GEMS Reviewed by Natalie Letch

Are you a budding wine enthusiast who has previously overlooked wines, which you would like to enjoy but couldn’t justify buying? Would you be tempted to do so, if we told you that The Montpellier Chapter are offering indulgent wines, at very special prices? We thought so. The Montpellier Chapter are passionate about wine and want to share their special wines with their guests. In addition to their extensive wine list, each month, two exclusive and regionally chosen wines are selected for their monthly ‘Wine Gems’. Guests are offered only the very best of the specifically chosen regions, there is no compromise or ‘end of the line’ just simply high-end wines at half price. They are renowned for their impressive wine collection and extensive cellar, so this really is the perfect opportunity for you to take advantage of their incredible offer and enjoy a selection of phenomenal wines. The Montpellier Chapter ‘experience’ can be enjoyed any day of the week through the month, yet, Thursdays are an increasingly popular night with people opting to start their weekend a day early and there is no surprise why. The grand theatre kitchen takes the leading role. Chefs take centre stage chargrilling their half price steaks for their guests while you peruse the iPad wine list. Very impressive. The Sommelier will, of course, tell you all about their current ‘Wine Gems’ and which dishes they compliment. As you enjoy your meal, you will smile, knowingly, that you are enjoying not only top service, but quality food and JUNE 2013

dazzling wines at a fraction of the price. We spoke to restaurant manager, Michael Stanford, who told us more about ‘Wine Gems’, “At almost half price, suddenly wines are opened up to a different range of people. It’s still an indulgence but it all about the experience not the profit. Superb wines would otherwise sit in the cellar, so it provides an excellent opportunity to wine lovers who would never normally buy a bottle at that price”. The ‘experience’ is paramount to The Montpellier Chapter, “It’s a way of sharing wines all over the world and bringing them to our guests. I map out the regions three months ahead so guests can choose which month they

like the sound of or opt to try something new”. With Michael’s impressive background and knowledge in wines, all guests are guaranteed to experience outstanding wines. As the ‘Wine Gems’ are changed monthly, guests are invited to follow the wines through carefully selected regions. In June, the premium wines derive from Mendoza, which is a strong producer from an up and coming region. Michael says, “People are really embracing the Malbec, it’s possibly the ‘It’ wine of the moment”. The red, Catena Zapata Malbec ‘Nicasia Vineyard’, reduced from £100 to £50, is a big, powerful wine, yet elegant and once decanted has a soft, chocolate aroma. The wine goes hand in hand with red meat and would reflect, what many would say, the staple diet of the Argentineans. The white, ‘Catena Alta Chardonnay 2009’, is reduced from £80 to £40. Michael describes the wine as a Begundian style chardonnay, a young wine but oaky white with rich flavours to it. This would sit well with rich fishes, Scallops in particular, or a Sea Bass with a cream sauce and white meats. Doesn’t that sound appetising? We definitely think so. June’s ‘Wine Gems’ have already generated immense interest from Cheltenham’s wine enthusiasts. You will be unlikely to find these wines at any cheaper cost, so this is a truly exclusive offer. CS

Elvis Presley of the blue rinse brigade? The hip swivelling moves may be a thing of the past but Des O’Connor, often described as the ‘Elvis Presley of the blue rinse brigade’, shows no signs of losing his enthusiasm for life, work and the sheer enjoyment he gains from performing. “Of course the Roses is a special place as it is where my dear friend Eric came to an end, and for sure he will get a mention somewhere during the show. Personally, I don’t give a single thought as to how my life will end. I believe that if you dwell on or think about when you will go or how you will go you take away the ability to relax and enjoy your life to the full. “I am very fortunate in that I have a choice in what I do though it wasn’t always like that. I did manage to catch up on my education, but early school days were not good as my house in the east end of London took a direct hit during the war. “Following our evacuation up to Northampton I had my first job in a shoe factory handling complaints. Then after doing National Service in the RAF I entered show business with my first theatre appearances in variety, touring all over the country before I broke into television in the 50’s. “You name them and I will have worked with them. All the major

personalities of the day, actors, TV celebrities, pop stars, and politicians. I gave many of our best known comics and entertainers their first break on TV. A couple missed out on appearing on my shows... Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra and Buddy Holly. All were booked but for good reasons were unable to attend. “I love my sport and being active. I spent time as a professional footballer with Northampton Town. I even had my jockey’s licence although I never got to race. Life is very good as I have a wonderful son Adam aged eight with my beautiful wife Jodie who is younger than two of my daughters, so I take every opportunity to play sport with him. His being here makes me determined to look after myself and ensure that I do not miss out on him growing up.

“In January 2012 I completed a wonderful season in the hit musical Dreamboats and Petticoats at the Playhouse Theatre, London. I then took on the role of The Wizard at the London Palladium without missing a single performance. Even the dog, Toto, got one day off a week. I have appeared there over 1200 times, so I think only Tommy Steele has appeared more. “I have a passion for writing and am forever writing down anecdotes and witticisms. I don’t like rudeness or vulgarity. It is not my style and there is no need for it, especially when the age range of the audience is so wide. Staying on stage for too long is just a case of self-indulgence... so I don’t do that. “As for the show itself I am back doing what I really enjoy, variety. There is a band of five musicians who have been with me for some time. Sometimes even they don’t know what song I’m going to sing next. All the right songs but not necessarily in the right order. “I have been in variety all my life, so the only time I will consider retiring is when no one comes along to the theatre or the audience leave without a smile on their face. I recall one time up north at a theatre where the husbands had obviously been dragged along and hearing one of them say afterwards: “Hey, that weren’t half bad lass.” CS

The map is now available at www.cheltenhamhalf.co.uk Cheltenham’s Half Marathon which takes place on Sunday 15th September 2013 will see 3000 runners gather at the race village in Pittville Park before starting their 13.1mile journey around Cheltenham. The course will start and finish on Evesham Road, running alongside the Approach Golf Course and around Pittville Park before heading south along Tommy Taylor’s Lane. The route then takes runners along Clarence Road and onto Winchcombe Street towards the town centre. Runners will then cross the High Street and follow Rodney Road passing the Town Hall, before joining the tree-lined Promenade towards Montpellier. Runners will be treated to the broad, flat streets of Lansdown Road, passing along Hatherley Road and re-joining the A40 towards Cheltenham College. Race organiser, Amy Budd, from GO2 explains: “The route has been designed to show-off Cheltenham - the beautiful regency streets, Pittville Park and the Racecourse. The course is as flat as we could make it with one climb along Prestbury Road. It is set to be a great fitness challenge for the autumn!” At the half-way mark runners will pass

along Montpellier Terrace and head to the north of the town along Prestbury Road. The final section of the route takes a stunning lap of Cheltenham racecourse, then on past Pittville Pump Rooms before crossing the finish line at Evesham Road. Amy says: “It’s really something to run with so many others, when you’re all facing the same challenge. Especially as you know people have challenged themselves for important reasons; in memory of a loved one, to raise money for the community, to transform their fitness or simply for the love of running. Everyone has a reason to run so if you’re thinking about signing up - go for it!” Councillor Rowena Hay, cabinet member for sport and culture, says “It’s great that Cheltenham is having its own half marathon. We welcome the event

which will help keep people fit, healthy and active, and will also be good for promoting the town.” Race organiser, Amy Budd, from GO2 continues: “The initial response has been fantastic with 500 people signed up in the first week. We don’t want people to miss out, so make sure you sign up at www.cheltenhamhalf.co.uk” The British Heart Foundation and Winston’s Wish are the Official Charity Partners for Cheltenham’s Half Marathon 2013. Runners can request a fundraising pack for the British Heart Foundation and Winston’s Wish via the online registration system at www.cheltenhamhalf.co.uk CS To register for the race, for a route map and for more information visit www.cheltenhamhalf.co.uk

So the football season has ended... But the news stories don’t relent Shane Duff discusses the issues surrounding retirement in the game

Normally these attributes would rub me up the wrong way, but Jose gets ‘Special’ treatment.

The game schedule has been completed for all of the English football leagues (except championship play-off final at the time of writing) and the players all around the country will be heading to airports jetting off to find some sunshine and well earned ‘R and R’. The premier league news has been so enthralling since the last weekend of the season. Player retirements of many high profile players, many of whom were players that I really looked up to in my teenage years. Also the managerial merrygo-round has begun. The top three league finishers will all start next season with new managers, which I am sure has never happened before. Jose Mourinho, the self proclaimed ‘special one’ looks to be heading back to our shores and no doubt give the media plenty of ammo for their columns. One thing that you can say about our Portuguese friend is that he is box office. His press conferences would generate income if they were ticketed. I for one am gripped by his ego and arrogance. Normally these attributes would rub me up the wrong way, but Jose gets ‘Special’ treatment. Local football seasons have also come to an end and last night I was delighted to be asked to be present the trophies to all of the award winners at the Annual

Cheltenham League awards evening at Cheltenham Town Hall. This is the second time I have been given the task and one that I am sure won’t happen again as my ‘footballer status’ is dwindling due to my recent retirement. There can be nothing more embarrassing than getting announced onto the stage and all of the kids turn to each other and say ‘who’s that?’. To my surprise last night, this was not the case and I was given a very warm welcome by all. It was pleasing to see lots of familiar faces that have attended my Soccer Camps be recognised for their success in the season and pick up an award. Away from football the cricket season has started for me and I have started on fire. My bat was a gift from Gloucestershire batsman Hamish Marshall and manufactured by the Indian company BOOM BOOM. You could say that it is in full working order. The first three knocks of the season have produced a 90, 67 and 50.... A cracking start if I do say so myself (a bit of Jose coming out there....). Let’s hope it carries on into the summer. CS

Jodie’s motivational tips to keep you

EXERCISING

Even with the best intentions in the world, sometimes it is very easy to find any excuse to stop you exercising. If you feel like this is you, have a read through these tips to keep you motivated for exercise so nothing stands in your way... Vary your training – Nothing is more likely to keep you going than adding variety to your fitness training. Look at what else you can do – running, walking, cycling, rowing and swimming, resistance training all add to your training and improve flexibility, strength and general fitness.

Get an exercise training plan – If you have the knowledge of what you should be doing in the gym or even at home (if gyms scare you) to help you achieve your goals you will feel more motivated to exercise. You don’t have to train every day, in fact overtraining is a huge demotivator. A structured plan will

increase your motivation and your chances of success. Get in touch with me if you would like a training plan put together specifically for you.

Set yourself a fitness goal – Enter an event. There is a real sense of satisfaction if you actually enter an event, commit to something, for example, Race for Life or a local 10k run, or a swim. Be realistic with your goals but make them hard enough to be a good challenge. Once you start talking about your event to others, you will have the motivation to make it happen and hey presto you are getting fit at the same time. Record your training progress – Keep a training schedule of what exercise you do. Then you can see how you are progressing by reviewing yourself improving.

Make your exercise social – If you get bored exercising on your own, train with a friend or join a class. My new bootcamp starts on June 12th. Come and join a group of similar minded people, who like you want to get fitter and shape up. CS

dawn As Cheltenham Racecourse awaits it’s £45m redevelopment which is due to begin immediately after the 2014 Festival, I took a look at the history behind the home of National Hunt racing... The original site of the Racecourse is actually where the Pylons stand on Cleeve Hill, it was here that a three mile flat race known as ‘The Cheltenham Gold Cup’ was run for the first time in 1819. I guess we should in a way thank the disillusioned Reverend Francis Close for burning down the Grandstand at that original site. It was due to his outrage on gambling and his woeful conduct that Cheltenham Racecourse moved to Prestbury Park in 1831. A natural amphitheatre looked over by the finest of Cotswold Hills. At the time the land belonged to the Minister for War; Lord Ellenborough who offered its use after being outraged by the actions of the screaming Reverend, who had famously exclaimed that Horseracing was the manifestation of the Devil on Earth! Fast forward to 1907; Messrs Pratt took over the management of Prestbury Park and decided that as Newmarket was the Headquarters of British Flat Racing then Cheltenham should be the Headquarters of British Jump Racing and so it remains. I very often refer to Cheltenham as HQ. Steeplechasing started in Britain in 1831, having begun in Ireland. Ireland JUNE 2013

is of course the home of the horse. In 1911 The Cheltenham National Hunt Festival was staged for the first time, it was a two day fixture which grew to three days in 1923. In the 1930’s Steeplechasing hit the big time when Golden Miller won the Cheltenham Gold Cup five times. The race had been introduced as a three and a quarter mile steeplechase in 1924. Cheltenham raced on during the years of the Second World War. It was in the post war years that the fun really starts. 1948 saw the invasion of the Irish which continues to this day. Ireland’s love affair with Cheltenham started when Legendry trainer Vincent O’Brien brought Cottage Rake across the sea to win the 1948 Gold Cup, he returned the following year to successfully defend his crown. Rolling on to the swinging sixties the equine King of Ireland – Arkle, nicknamed “himself ” won three Gold Cups on the bounce. In his first triumph in 1964 he broke the heart of the top british steeplechaser Mill House. In previous articles in this magazine I have talked extensively about the two best Gold Cups of the 1980’s, if not the

two best Gold Cups to date. They are Dawn Run in 1986 and Desert Orchid in 1989. I won’t cover old ground but these are the two races that sum up Cheltenham in the 80’s to me. The transition period between the 1990’s and the new millennium belonged to the Irish hurdler; Istabraq. He took the Champion Hurdle three times between 1998 – 2000, he would have made it four if had not been for the outbreak of foot and mouth disease that cancelled the Festival in 2001. So here we stand in 2013, a year in which Cheltenham welcomed over 235,000 people to the Festival. Cheltenham is about to see another new dawn in its wonderful history. Subject to planning permission, the proposed developments will create a state-of-the-art grandstand, which will include new annual members' facilities, viewing areas, private boxes and Royal Box facilities. Elevated Walkways will provide mobility and multi-tiered viewing of the Parade Ring. CS Cathryn Fry Twitter @cathrynfry

“Ooo, there is some rivalry there - Jilly Cooper couldn’t even make it up!” I wonder if the people at Rolex breathe a sigh of relief when another year goes by without a Grand Slam win? (The Grand Slam I’m talking about, being a mega bucks prize – sponsored by Rolex offered to those who win consecutively in their sport within a calendar year at the very top, international level). Looking only at the equestrian side of their sponsorship… Rolex were closer than ever to handing out $350.000 last month at Badminton Horse Trials, only a few days after they nonchalantly announced a brand NEW Grand Slam of Jumping with a cool ONE MILLION EUROS as the prize. I say ‘nonchalantly’ – in fairness, they did have a bit of a shin dig with plentiful champagne and really posh canapés. To summarise, you have to win three massive international Grand Prix Jumping competitions consecutively in Germany, Canada and Switzerland. No one has ever done it before – but now there is a rather larger goal to aim at! For the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing, it’s Badminton in Gloucestershire, Burghley in Lincolnshire and Kentucky, USA. Pippa Funnell did it once, ten years ago and this year in an almost incomprehensible twist, we had TWO competitors lined up for the megaprize. William Fox-Pitt won Burghley 2011, then went on to be victorious at Kentucky 2012, before Badminton that year was called off due to the weather; rolling it on to the 2013 event. THEN, Andrew Nicholson won the subsequent Burghley and Kentucky, meaning he was also in the running to scoop the $350.000. This does get slightly more interesting and dramatic, when you learn that roughly around the time Pippa Funnell was victorious, Andrew Nicholson was busy running off with William FP’s wife. Ooo, there is some rivalry there - Jilly Cooper couldn’t even make it up!

Kate Justice takes a look back at The Badminton Horse Trials... Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials winner 2013 Jonathan Paget riding Clifton Promise.

If you would like to share your thoughts on this subject with Kate Justice, please email the Editor at editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

Anyway, neither of them won Badminton in the end, so it’s all a bit boring. Jonathan Paget, a first timer took the Mitsubishi Motors title in Gloucestershire and starts a new cycle of grand slamming. The favourite to win, current World, European and Olympic Champion Michael Jung was in the lead all the way through the competition, but…. had the FINAL fence down! It was a moment I’ll never forget – the whole crowd had pretty much accepted he’d gone clear and claimed the victory. A whoop began to go round… and then as he cantered away to the finish, the pole fell. There wasn’t even a collective ‘OH NO’. Everything fell silent as several thousand people found themselves speechless. Apart from witnessing sporting history unfold, Badminton 2013 has also left me with other delicious memories. I managed to get an invite to the much hyped Rider’s Cocktail party at Badminton House – the jolly Duke of Beaufort’s - and my word,

the canapés were fabulous. Bizarrely, they were being passed through a window into the main lounge, from what looked like a mini marquee outside. I admit I was rather underwhelmed when I noticed that – how many rooms does the estate have? And they cook in a tent?! Anyway, unperturbed I indulged in a few smoked salmon blinis, mini goat’s cheese tarts and chili cocktail sausages. Oh and a couple of glasses of Tattinger. Other than champagne at The House, I was generally sitting in a portacabin next to the main arena, interviewing riders. (Oh! the highs and lows – just so you don’t envy my position too much). The weather (I am really going to try and NOT talk incessantly about it for the rest of my life) was typically British – freezing and wet on day one, a boiling hot blazer by the end and just about everything else in between, but the international competition brought to our doorstep in the Cotswolds was nothing short of #onceinalifetime.
