editor’s foreword
Welcome to our May issue! Summer is almost with us, my dear readers, so just hang on in there – I’m certain that sun will shine for us anytime soon *fingers crossed*. To get you into the mood for summer we have our travel writer, Lucy Garbutt, transporting us on a mystical journey to Peru (page 68). Lucy writes: “Tantalising hints of the ruins emerged as the sun rapidly rose until the ruins glowed like an emerald jewel to salute a new day.” – Doesn’t that sound like a line out of an Indiana Jones film? May also welcomes the return of the Cheltenham Jazz Festival together with the RHS Malvern Spring Festival this month. Turn to page 15 to see our interview with soul-singing sensation, Natalie Williams, (what a lovely name she has!) and then take a look at page 17 to find out all about the RHS Malvern Festival. The photographs from our exclusive photo-shoot combining the two will be sure to ‘wow’ you - they certainly did us! Recycling, sustainability, global warming, these are all terms that are now ingrained in our mindsets, yet how many businesses are adopting ‘green-eco’ values? We celebrate a number of Gloucestershire businesses that are doing just that in our supplement: ‘Gloucestershire’s Green Eco-nomy’ (page 104). Reading the stories of these businesses are sure to leave you, like me, inspired to make tweaks to your daily routine both at home and at work. If you have ‘green’ core values in your workplace, do let us know – we are always after innovative ideas! We hope you have a marvellous May, enjoy the festivals and we will see you in June.

Jazz
Soul-singer and songwriter, Natalie Williams, discusses the crescendo of her musical career, her plans for Cheltenham Jazz festival and her friendship with the unforgettable and vivacious Amy Winehouse WORDS BY ALICE LLOYD
Natalie Williams has always had music in her veins and a song in her heart. Her father, who is a writer and poet, was over the moon when she told him of her dream to become a singer. That father-daughter bond has only been strengthened as they co wrote some of Natalie’s new album together; and she even used one of his poems as a basis for a song. She feels that writing music is something personal and emotional that can be very therapeutic. Music is a universal gift, and the album has universal themes that people can relate to. As the legendary soul singer, Stevie Wonder, said; “Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand.” This rings true, as the emotions Natalie evokes in her soulful melodies can be shared worldwide. She wanted to write songs that were about her own life and experiences, but that were also relatable. “I was very lucky to find what I wanted to do at a young age,” she said, “everyone appreciates music.” Her newest album, ‘Where You Are’, is dedicated to her Nan, who recently passed away. She admits that she tapped into a variety of emotions when writing the album and there were even times where she burst into tears. After all, soul music comes from the soul, and Natalie does not hide from this as she sings with a fervent passion. Natalie already boasts a successful and dynamic career, working alongside huge names like Amy Winehouse, drum and bass legend, Goldie and the musical maestro, Jamie Cullum - who incidentally said that, ‘Where You Are’ is
“her best album yet!” We asked who else she would most like to perform with. Natalie mentioned the classics, such as Stevie Wonder and Prince. However, she remained grounded and admits; “I’m not very good a talking to famous people, I get rather starstruck – so I really don’t know.” We couldn’t let Natalie go without asking her about her friendship with the wild-child Amy Winehouse. Their careers started up at around the same time and Natalie fondly reminisces about the nights where Winehouse would travel to SoHo with her trumpet player, Frank, to watch Natalie’s gigs. “Amy and I once went on a trip to Greece together, which was quite adventurous,” she laughed, “It was very funny; she was brilliant. She was really only getting going. She came to my first Jazz Cafe gig then, she was being her mischievous self!” Out of the cafe and onto the red
carpet, Natalie was nominated for the celebrated MOBO awards in 2010. “I was in Hungary visiting my grandmother, just taking some time off,” she said, “and I suddenly got a call on my mobile saying that I had been nominated for the MOBOS - it was surreal. So, I got to do the whole thing; the dressing up, the red carpet.” She wore her favourite designer, Patrizia Pepe and watched a close friend of hers play piano with Jessie J: “It was great, it was so nice to be backstage and experience that.” The Cheltenham Jazz festival is fastapproaching. Each year it welcomes a fanfare of noise, colour and culture to the town and rouses a diverse group of people who share a love for jazz, soul and the blues. Natalie joins in with this excitement as she will be performing at the festival again and will ensure that everyone is clapping along to well-known crowd-pleasers such as Pharrell Williams’s, ‘Happy’, or The 1975’s ‘Chocolate.’ Although the new album taps into Natalie’s jazz roots, she listens to a wide variety of genres. She said; “I like being surprised. I'm really into Brazilian music right now, my boyfriend is into it, and he will put something on and it's amazing! It’s good to find some interesting covers too.” Natalie will be playing at The Cheltenham Jazz Festival on May 5th and will also perform at the Love Supreme Festival in Sussex in July. Also, check out her 10 piece band, ‘Soul Family’ on YouTube.

A STROLL AROUND Bishops Walk
At the heart Cirencester, Bishops Walk is the town’s only indoor shopping centre, featuring a range of shops and cafes, selling everything from coffee and cooking pots, to computer games and mobile phones. As well as being a hotspot for local shoppers, Bishops Walk is also known for showcasing the work and skills of students from Cirencester College and Deer Park School. Over the coming weeks, first and second year students from the college will showcase their photographic skills in a stunning weeklong exhibition, beginning on the 19th of May, temporarily replacing the atrium’s famous mobiles that were previously created by older students. This will be followed in the coming months, by a musical performance from Cirencester Primary School which is set to showcase the musical work that they recently presented at the NEC in Birmingham. With a wonderful selection of shops and a regular selection of work from local students, Bishops Walk is fast becoming the place to be in Cirencester. David Allberry, managing agent for Bishops Walk said: “We’re delighted that everyone’s hard work and dedication to raise the game in Bishops Walk has paid off, and that it is once more a popular venue for shopping in Cirencester”.

They began designing and manufacturing beautiful, bespoke kitchens and the big old shed transformed into an Aladdin’s cave with room after room of stunning kitchen displays! They are a small, friendly, family
business, and believe that getting to know each customer, on a personal level, enables us to tailor each kitchen to individual space and requirement. A kitchen is no longer just a cooking area, and how it works with, and integrates into, overall living space is crucial to a successful design. Years on, they are still going strong, and have recently launched a new range of predesigned cabinets. Please pop in and visit them. Some of the original team are still here. We just look a little bit more lived in! www.parlourfarm.com

Cotswold Living
The amazing resurgence of Painted Furniture is clear to see for anybody taking an interest in interior trends, and using painted furniture in the living and dining areas is becoming as popular as it always has been in the bedroom. The availability of a wide choice of colours outside of the realms of high end bespoke furniture is what has really made the
difference and Cirencester’s own Cotswold Living have been one of the earliest proponents. The company run a beautiful showroom in Gosditch Street and the online retailer; www.paintedfurnitureco.co.uk, Rosy Brown, Managing director, is fully committed to keeping a high street presence for the business, “We regularly have customers who travel two hours or more to visit the showroom after using the website to choose the collections they want to view. To many people the idea of combining a furniture buying trip with a day out in the Cotswolds is quite appealing so we do play on it a bit! Cirencester the town is part of our brand” What makes the difference is being able to see the collections in a range of colour options, of course there is the Classic White and Ivory but also a whole range contemporary greys and soft greens, the latest collection called Lymington is a stunning soft limestone colour, beautifully light and summery.
Le Beaujolais
Believe it or not, once a month at Cirencester’s favourite French restaurant, Le Beaujolais, around 40 French lovers get together and talk, or try to talk, in French. Out of the 170 current members of Club des Amis, a third are French, some are English with fluent French, but most
Researched & compiled by Beth Mahoney
have joined for the fun of a French-style evening out, whilst enjoying a range of food from the kitchen of renowned chef, Eric Lepine. Club des Amis has now become so popular that regular members, Tony and Jan Kidman have become honorary administrators, in charge of organising evenings and events. Restaurant owner, Kiean Glynn, has said how the club began as just dinner and a chat but has now become much more than that: “Now the guests swap French books, films, dvds, recipes, and at each dinner a member introduces him or herself and talks about their lives and love of France”. The menu, which changes each month, could include a range of dishes, including beef bourguignon, with a galette du rois pudding, fish and ratatouille, a chicken casserole, a cheese board or fruit tarts. Each meal costs just £12.50, plus wine, which of course, is usually French.

Gardening
Keeping it Simple James Alexander-Sinclair is a garden designer, journalist and broadcaster. He spends his time darting around the country making patches of our green and pleasant land more beautiful. He’s usually the one wearing a hat… May is one of the merriest months of the year. It is full of the promise of things to come, emerging buds, unfurling shoots and flurries of blossom. It is also the start of the RHS Flower Shows with the magnificent RHS Malvern at the Three Counties Showground from 8-11th May. I will be cavorting amongst the alliums and tulips at the show as well as introducing various glorious gardeners such as the delightful Carol Klein and the dashing Chris Beardshaw in the Spring Festival Theatre. The show gardens are always the biggest draw at these affairs and with this in mind I thought that it would be an idea to share with Cotswold Style some simple planting tips that have stood me in relatively good stead over the years. Keep it simple. I cannot stress this enough, the less is more philosophy will always serve one well. As gardeners we are all guilty of cruising the aisles of nurseries and garden shows nationwide, scratching the itch that is satisfied only by a new plant purchase but it leaves borders bulging with a plethora of mismatched beauties. Limit the colour palette and species and marvel in the result.
Plant along paths. There is nothing finer on a balmy summer’s eve than the waft of something wonderful on the breeze. Flanking pathways with aromatics means that their heavenly scent is released as you perambulate your walkways. Always avoid anything thorny, prickly or spiky when planting near people, however. Don’t ignore the dark patches. All gardens have a shady spot, which are often sadly ignored. There are many plants that will thrive in full shade and their flowers are often coloured to attract attention. The pure white of the tricky Trillium grandiflorum sings from the shadows and the zingy lime of Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae is bright enough to catch even the most unobservant eye. Give trees a chance. They add height, year round interest and form and every garden should have one, no matter how small. Look at fastigiate varieties for smaller plots; Malus tschonoskii is a winner. Choose the right variety and there will be blossom in spring, beautiful foliage in
summer, stunning autumn colour followed by bright winter berries. Think about the shape of your flowers. When planning a border choose a variety of flower shapes: there are three basic shapes, umbels are flat like Achilleas, spires are tall and thin like the delicious Delphinium and balls are round and bouncy like the indispensable Allium. Avoid one hit wonders, they are fine in containers but in a border plants should earn their keep. Stick with species that have longevity in their flowering season, there are many that will flower from May to September and even have great seedheads that will look fantastic in the frosts; Eryngium giganteum, Phlomis russelliana and Echinacea purpurea all hold their shape well into winter. James Alexander-Sinclair can be seen at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival 8-11th May. Tickets are on sale now, priced from £14.50 for RHS/TCAS members, £15.50 for nonmembers. Tickets available on the gate from £18. For more information please visit www.threecounties/rhsmalvern

Dear
Rachel ....
Rachel Vincent answers your latest interior design dilemmas
Q: I desperately need to give my bathroom a face lift but can’t afford to buy a new bathroom suite, can you advise me on how to update my bathroom without it costing a fortune? James from Andoversford A: James, bathrooms can be updated quite easily and cheaply if you spend your money on the right things. If it’s your taps that look dated then spend your money on some new chrome bath and sink taps, this will instantly update the look of your bathroom. DIY sheds now sell a huge selection of contemporary inexpensive bathroom accessories, it’s amazing the difference a shiny new towel ring and mirror can make to a flagging bathroom. Go for fresh, bright colours on the walls to create a more dramatic contrast against old tired sanitary ware and spruce up with fresh white towels. For paint, I would suggest a Duck Egg or Sage by Laura Ashley Paint, which will create an instant uplift. They also do fantastic offers on their home furnishings so you may be able to pick up some new fabric for a blind at the same time!
Q: After many years of living in a period house I have moved to newly built property and am struggling to get the house to feel cosy, how can I inject character into a house that has none? Sarah from Prestbury A: Sarah, it’s all about warmth, after all there’s no point in having fireplaces and beams galore if the house doesn’t feel like a home. I would recommend using some warm paint tones from Farrow and Ball, they make paints from natural pigments and are predominately based on historical colour schemes so will add a more “period” feel to your scheme, Colours such as, “Red Earth” and “Olive”, will cosy up just about any space as they have such warm
Q: We have bought a beautiful 16th century cottage and the ceilings are incredibly low, do you have any advice on how to make them feel and look taller? Elizabeth from Cirencester A: One of the key things is proportion so try and use low slung sofas and chairs rather than high back furniture that will only visually reduce your ceiling height. To create a feeling of increased height use portrait rather than landscape framed pictures on your walls, always
undertones. Team this with natural wool fabrics at the windows, lots of textured throws and cushions and if at all possible, utilise or install some form of fireplace or wood burner in your sitting room – they make very convincing electric woodburners now if you don’t want the mess of a traditional burner, this addition which will inject instant warmth and atmosphere into your space.
try to use floor length curtains to create clean simple vertical lines and forgo fussy pelmets and headings, which cut into the illusion of height. Try and expose as much glass as possible; set curtains back from patio doors and de-clutter window sills – this will all draw the eye into the garden and the room will feel far less claustrophobic and in turn more spacious. In short, anything on the floor needs to be low and wide and everything on the walls needs to be tall and thin; it’s all about creating an illusion.
Thanks for all your questions and I hope the advice helps. It’s not always about making big changes to gain maximum impact, sometimes all you have to do is make small adjustments to what you’ve already got. So, before the sledgehammer comes out, look at what really is the problem and see if by making a few simple changes you can solve your own problem.

The praise of Interior & Furniture Designer Joanna Berryman, perfects her art of combining the old with the new in her stunning Cotswold home
FOLLY
WORDS BY RACHEL TOZZA PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMON WILLIAMS
The exterior of The Folly in Didmarton, is a traditional Cotswold vision of classic, honey-hued limestone. But take a step inside the 16th Century Gloucestershire farmhouse and you are greeted with a style that is anything but conventional. In 2010, The Folly utterly transformed when Joanna purchased the property for her family to use as a weekend bolt hole. The London based creative force behind Matrushka set to work, creating an aesthetic that is “fashion-forward meets rock 'n' roll, meddled with English eccentricity” and is a look that has the world-wide residential & commercial client base of Matrushka flocking to Joanna for her Interior & styling expertise. The sympathetic restoration of the farmhouse was essential to Joanna. Remaining true to the integrity & soul of the house, local flagstones were sourced to replace the existing carpet on the ground floor and reclaimed timber floorboards were laid. Interior walls were painted in French Grey and Hardwicke
56 MAY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
White by Farrow & Ball, creating the perfect backdrop for Joanna to bring her signature Matrushka style of edgy glamour & laid back luxe to life. When it came to furnishing, Joanna, a former fashion stylist, applied the same styling principles of ‘pulling together a look’, whilst cleverly drawing on her perfected art of combining the old with the new. Contemporary Kartell chairs juxtapose heirloom furniture & vintage treasures. Flea market finds and antique photography sit comfortably alongside bold modern art. Vibrant pops of colour and bold decorative gestures grab your attention and feminine meets masculine in a wonderfully eclectic blend.
Where hard edges were found, they have been instantly softened with sumptuous and often velvet, textiles and stylish, whimsical soft furnishings. ‘Poetic Chaos’ is the Matrushka ethos. Joanna believes ‘interiors lie on the threshold between art, fashion and functional spaces and it is the constantly shifting elements of these realms that keep us alert and open to the new’. The Folly is a perfect reflection of this characterisation and reveals a carefully curated, luxurious yet approachable Cotswold retreat. It’s a home with such a unique character and an interior that will continually evolve and can only get better with age.

Gardening
A May Time Star This month Camilla Bassett-Smith moves away from the allotment and towards a woodland beauty loved by royalty… Lily of the Valley – which valley? Somewhere in Stroud? The Golden Valley? Well actually a valley near Limoges in France if one of the legends as to how the name came about is to be believed. It’s all quite complex but basically involves Saint Leonard who lived in the Vienne Valley fighting with an evil dragon in the woods. It is said that where drops of the blood from Saint Leonard fell, these dainty flowers sprung up. What a fragrant place A&E would be if that were true of every casualty. It is a woodland flower full of folklore and Christian meaning. The songs of Solomon in The Bible make reference to the plant and another belief held is that the flowers were created out of Mary’s tears at the cross. This explains one of the common names for the plant ‘Mary’s Tears’. If you’re a fairy lover then these delicate perennial visitors are often said to ring when the fairy folk sing, and the little flowers have been likened to fairy cups. Some Gloucestershire residents also recall the use of the name ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ around the time of World War 2. Anyway let’s get back to the 21st century and this native rhizomatous beauty which is currently peeping out from the shade across our green and pleasant land. A more un-fussy plant you’ll rarely meet, happy in poor soil and it can soon establish its own family
gathering beneath your trees. It prefers woodland conditions in dappled shade, but can cope with heavy shade too, so a brilliant choice for brightening up that dingy corner where nothing much else will grow. Having said that, my Grandfather has an excellent row of them in quite a sunny spot in Cheltenham (albeit shaded a little by a large conifer hedge behind). Ease of growth however is not their top trump, this is saved for the virtue of their outstanding fragrance which is not only appreciated in the garden but in the world of commerce too. An amble around Cheltenham’s town centre for a start could prove a fragrant experience taking in the blissful Penhaligons range at Cavendish House, then a tootle to Crabtree & Evelyn, taking in Yardley at Boots and finishing off in Marks & Spencer. I love snow and revert to an eight year old when the sky across Gloucestershire turns to frozen precipitation and to me these little wonders resemble an arch of perfect white snowflakes. However, there is also a beautiful little dusky pink variation of the traditional favourite: Convallaria majalis var. rosea. Very sought after and a real treat to grow. Convallaria majalis, means “belonging
to May” and if like my fabulous parents you celebrate your birthday this month, then this is your birth flower. It’s believed by many to bring good luck and in France bunches are handed out by flower sellers on May 1st. Helston in Cornwall also use the flowers in celebration as they host their Furry Dance on the 8th May every year. This is one of our country’s oldest customs and celebrates the passing of winter and sees the dancers accompanied by the snow white Lily of the Valley which jangle in the enthusiastic air. In stark contrast, many believe it is unlucky to bring the flowers indoors. Clearly the nobly born prefer to believe the luck inducing tales, as numerous royal weddings have included the dainty blossoms in their bridal bouquets including those of Grace Kelly and our most recent Cambridge wedding. Queen Victoria was also a great admirer. Talking of queens, the iconic rock band of the same name even featured a number called ‘Lily of the Valley’ on their third studio album in 1974! It may hide away in a shaded valley, but don’t let its shy nature prevent you from befriending this May time star. From fairies and dragons to queens and rock stars, this really is a flower for all. Into the BLUE
Interior designer, Kelly James, tells us why we should go for indigo... PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOWPLAY MEDIA
Kelly James is one half of the husband and wife team – Shadowplay Design. Based in Cheltenham, Shadowplay Media is a creative production studio specializing in photography, CGI and video for over 2 decades. Interior and product design is their new offering through Shadowplay Design; current projects include photographic and CG images for a bar and nightclub, interiors for a restaurant and coffee shop and domestic interior design. Phil and Kelly James have 2 sons and a dachshund. With a business and family to juggle life can be busy, frustrating at times but always fun.
Balancing between blue and violet is indigo. Named after the indigo dye it has a wide spectrum and spans all colours of the ocean. As unsettled as the ocean and as uncertain as the British spring weather it has a variety of bright, deep, soft and electric shades – could this be why it’s one of this seasons strongest colours?
BALANCING BETWEEN BLUE & VIOLET IS INDIGO
Indigo is a very familiar colour, for generations we have been wearing indigo - denim. The large choice of denim shades offers a variety of looks, with the options of dark, bleached, vintage, faded and even stone wash finishes we can wear denim for all occasions. Like the classic dress code: smart/casual, indigo offers a great base for an outfit as well as a perfect interiors
colour – everything works with Indigo! A strong contrasting colour is yellow, bright citrus yellows are also very popular at the moment and looks fantastic with Indigo blue – the two colours sit beautifully together in interiors as they sit naturally together with the indigo blue of the ocean and the bright yellow of the sun. As this seasons colour there is a lot of choice of Indigo products on the market. These options are always there but due to fashion and products being highlighted in interior magazines as ‘the new seasons colour’ it’s become a popular choice. Consider Indigo as a change to your home?
EVERYTHING WORKS WITH INDIGO!

Good Life

Now that all of our beautiful lambs are flourishing, skipping and dancing about in this beautiful spring sunshine, we can finally pack away our lambing shed for another year. It's a very gruelling schedule for some of our stock team, and they're exhausted after delivering 1,497 lambs this season. We've had a few predictable sad outcomes but mostly a very successful year. Bottle feeding takes place at the Farm Park twice daily, throughout the year, so we do need a hearty handful of fresh and fluffy lambs and kids to let the public feed. As you can imagine, along the way there are bound to be a few lambs or kids (baby goats) that need hand rearing. Amongst the lovable crew being fostered by the team this year is a little bit of a star. You may already have seen his beautiful smiling face in the local press, as he was one of our first sets of quad goat kids for a very long time. This special little one is a Boer goat and his name is Herbert! One morning at about 7.30 am, I went into the demo barn during lambing to check on all the new lambs we'd had in the night. Right at the front in a pen of three other kids, nestled under a
heated lamp, was the cutest little goat of all. As soon as he heard my footsteps, he jumped up on his tiny hooves, wiggling his bottom. He was the friendliest little fella I've come across in my three years on the farm. He was the noisiest little chap as well and so demanding of my attention. I put my hand over to greet him and he instantly pushed his tiny little face into my warm palm. This seems to be one of his favourite pastimes, his record for standing there with his face in my palm is an amazing 45 minutes! This has become one of the quirks he’s now famous for amongst the team. “WE LOVE HERBERT!” - I might get some T-shirts emblazoned with this phrase. He is such a sweetheart; we want you all to experience Herbert and keep in touch with him, and so we’ve given him his own twitter account. You can follow him: @herbertthegoat, to keep up to date with his antics. So as our lambing has come to an end for another year, we are now introducing our next demonstration which will be milking, taking place twice daily. Then in

In the summer holidays, our Sheep Show boys we will be back on Stage 9 of our sheep breeds help us take a trip through history, starting back in Neolithic times and coming right up to our present day, commercial sheep…and boy, can you see the differences throughout time! They're all pretty well behaved (most of the time), but we've had a few escapees and Tyson the Texel is full of beans. He’s a greedy one, so he's always bursting to get on stage to get to the food. During the demo, children can join in and have fun dressing up in costumes that represent man in the different eras of time. I hope you and your families find the time to come and meet all these special characters over the next few months. We have fantastic food in our restaurant, using locally sourced produce (some of it’s even our own), not to mention the amazing cakes! An absolute must. Failing that, you’re welcome to bring a picnic and just hang out at the park for the day. The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. PERU
FEED THE IMAGINATION AND BROADEN THE MIND Self-professed adventuress; Lucy Garbutt is left serene and spiritual when she takes a mystical journey to Peru From the spectacular Inca ruins of Machu Picchu and the shimmering waters of Lake Titicaca to the lush rainforest of the Amazon basin, the huge diversity of Peru’s attractions will never cease to enchant and enthuse the visitor. Reluctant to depart the wonderful Peruvian cuisine and magnificent colonial architecture of Lima with its Spanish plazas, churches, cloisters and monasteries, I was soon buzzing excitedly south aboard a light aircraft. As we traversed the glorious isolation of the Nazca Desert, suddenly the Nazca Lines were below us, a series of ancient geoglyphs carved into the plateau. The remaining short flight to Arequipa was a dream going back in time, theorising the Nazca Lines as extra-terrestrial runways or as an early settler’s water-sourcing religious symbol. I snapped out of my day dream as a stupendous scene emerged from the plane’s window with snow-capped volcano El Misti appearing within a backdrop of Pichu-Pichu and Chachani mountains with Arequipa nestled below. Arequipa is a shining ‘White City’, of exquisite Spanish-inspired architectural treasures created from the chalk

coloured volcanic stone of the area. One could spend many sunny days ambling the plazas, gardens, churches and the enchanting Santa Catalina Convent, but once again I had to drag myself away from Arequipa’s beauty and fascinating history. Adventure beckoned as the bus climbed past cattle, llamas and traditionally dressed Andean women travelling beside the road into the spectacularly dramatic volcanic panorama of Colca Canyon. The Colca Canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and its steep jutting walls are home to the mighty Andean condor. My heart pounded in my rib-cage as I perched on the rugged cliff edge, watching condors nesting, scavenging and gliding on the thermals below. The Rio Colca snakes its way through the heart of the gorge, with sunshine glancing off the terraced slopes and within the majesty of being in the upper world of the gods, I was lost once again – soaring with the condors in a wingsuit and imagining the thrill of human flight! After the road journey through continuously magical landscapes, we arrived at Lake Titicaca. A calmness descended upon me and I felt I’d reached the top of the world with the lake’s majestic deep blue waters reflecting the vast sky back on itself. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and pretty soon a motor boat zipped me across its glassy surface to the man-made floating Uros Islands where the Quechua speaking inhabitants still live as they did centuries ago when they retreated here from the Incas. The islands are made from layers of totora reeds that grow in the shallows of Titicaca. I revelled in my
glimpse of this very unusual way of life marvelling at the ingenuity of this community as they continuously weave the totora into roofs, walls, mats and fishing rafts. Taquile Island is nonfloating but an equally fascinating place in the middle of the lake with a wide variety of pre-Incan and Incan ruins, whilst the private Suasi Island is perfect for those wishing to explore the quieter, less travelled side of the lake.
Once again reluctant to leave but thrilled to arrive in mythical Cusco, ‘Navel of the world,’ the important Inca religious and military stronghold. Cusco is absolutely stunning with an extraordinary mixture of pre-Columbian ruins, elaborate Incan stonework and citadels with beautiful colonial Spanish architecture. To make the treat complete I had arrived in time for one of the many hundreds of festivals held in Cusco to pay homage to various patron saints or important attributes of Mother Earth. Peruvians are joyous people, sociable and welcoming and never more so than during a fiesta! This festival is a re-enactment of Inca traditions to thank the Sun God for healthy crops. The spectacle involves much rejoicing, pan-

pipes blasting, elaborately costumed street dancers whirling to live music, high priests praying while processing along flower festooned streets with the first born Son of the Sun carried on a golden throne. Cusco is a rare treat in itself but combined with the festival, a most enlightening experience! The highlight of my journey was experiencing the famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu in its awe-inspiring and very inaccessible location high in the Andes. The adventure commenced aboard the enchanting Machu Picchu train and culminated in a fascinating journey of helter skelter as the train traversed the steep mountain slopes, with the climax being a series of switch backs where the train crawled back and forth on its journey up the mountain. From here the route continues along original stone Inca Highways traversing a mountain range, crossing rivers and valleys through dry scrub, lush cloud
forest and high-altitude grassland. After hours of uphill labour I was rewarded with a most spectacular site of exquisite ruins and curved agricultural terraces clinging to the steep ridge high above the valley below – I had arrived at Winay Wayna. Blown away amidst these distinctive ruins my imagination soared with the magnitude of my surroundings and an otherworldly spiritual surge pulsed through every nerve in my body. I sat still for a very long time taking it all in. My first glimpses of Machu Picchu were no less epic. I made the dramatic entrance to the lost city at dawn through lush jungle flora to the elevated Sun Gate. The jagged peaks and terracing, shrouded in mist, added to the magic. Tantalising hints of the ruins emerged as the sun rapidly rose until the ruins glowed like an emerald jewel to salute a new day. My day at Machu Picchu was spent in stratospheric levels of awe as I explored the site with its polished drystone walls which were once palaces of the finest Inca stonework, and inlaid steps, baths, water channels, temples, fountains, tombs and sacred squares. This high altitude site was the antithesis of anything I have ever seen before and
the hours melted away while I marvelled its beauty, mystery and purpose. It was a bonus to climb the lushly forested Huayna Picchu for a view back across the famous saddle - straddled with ruins spilling down the terraced slopes, framed with dramatic views of the Urubamba Canyon and its roaring river far below. Rabbiting On
This May sees the return of Rabbit Awareness Week. This is an annual event designed so rabbit experts such as vets, pet retailers and welfare charities can work together to educate the public about proper care and welfare of the nation’s bunnies. At Vets on the Park, we will be offering free health checks for your rabbits and heaps of information on feeding and care. Rabbits are now the third most popular pets in Britain with an estimated 1.7 million being kept as companions. Diet, environment, behaviour and healthcare are all very important and must be considered before choosing a rabbit as a pet. Diet
Firstly, diet. Rabbits have a very complex digestive system and if they are not fed correctly it can be very serious, in some cases life threatening. Research has shown that the oldfashioned muesli type diets can cause many health problems including selective feeding – leading to nutritional imbalances, obesity, eating less hay – which can cause dental disease, and most serious of all gut stasis, which is often fatal. Rabbits should be fed fibre rabbit pellet- this make up no more than 20% of the diet, which means about a tablespoon twice a day. The rest of the diet must be made up of a good quality hay or grass. Rabbits may also have small quantities of fresh greens such as kale, spinach ad savoy cabbage, however sometimes these can be too rich for rabbits and cause diarrhoea, Greens also contain high levels of calcium, which can cause bladder stones. Carrots are very high in sugar so must be given in small quantities occasionally as a treat. Always ensure your bunny has a plentiful supply of fresh water. 70 MAY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
Environment
In the wild, your rabbit’s territory would span 30 tennis courts! Sadly, today many rabbits suffer in tiny hutches barely big enough for them to turn around in. Ideally they should have a hutch that acts as their bedroom which should be big enough for them to hop across 3 times and tall enough that they can stand. It should have plenty of clean hay for bedding to keep them warm. On particularly cold nights the hutch should be taken into a shed, garage or into the house. In addition to their “bedroom”, they should have a large exercise run or even better a paddock, which should be secure, have plenty of hiding spaces and an area for digging. Their toilet area should be cleaned daily and their bedroom should be cleaned out regularly. Behaviour
Being prey animals it is important that rabbits have plenty of places to hide, such as tunnels and cardboard boxes. You can also enrich their environment with toys, unsprayed twigs and tree stumps and digging boxes. Rabbits spend 80% of their time in the wild foraging so it is a great idea to put their food in different places or even in brown paper bags so they have to unwrap it. All of these little tricks will help them to replicate some of the normal behaviour
that they would display in the wild, thus reducing stress and anxiety. Rabbits are social creatures and much happier kept in groups of 2 or more – but please make sure either you have same sex or they are neutered! Healthcare
Your rabbit should receive regular health checks from the vet as well as annual vaccinations. We vaccinate against myxomatosis which is a virus spread by fleas, mites and mosquitoes. Signs of this disease are a puffiness around the face and eyes which over a few days progress to cause blindness, in most cases it results in death. We also vaccinate against Viral Heamorrhagic Disease, which is a virus that is spread by direct contact between rabbits, or from insects people, clothing or shoes – it causes internal bleeding and liver disease. Your rabbits should also receive regular dental checks as their teeth can quickly become overgrown which can lead to painful abscesses and difficulty eating. They should also be regularly treated for fleas mites and worms. During the warmer months ensure that your bunny’s bottom is clean on a daily basis, dirty bottoms can very quickly result in fly strike – causing terrible wounds. If you see fly eggs or maggots on your rabbit seek urgent veterinary advice. At Vets on the Park we will be offering free health checks for your rabbits and heaps of free information on feeding and care. Please call 01242 517199 for your RAW healthcare appointment. www.vetsonthepark.co.uk

HYDRATE Hydration is key all year round, but even more so during the summer months. Along with keeping your water intake up, remember to moisturise daily. For plump and radiant skin one of my favourites is the Avocado & Jojoba Hydrating Day Cream by Pai skincare (£30); it’s both fast absorbing and vitamin-rich. Rebalancing your skin at night is also really important, as this is when your skin best replenishes itself. Face oils have become a staple part of my evening routine, and the Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil (£30) works a treat to restore lost moisture, helping to fight fine lines and wrinkles. Remember, skincare goes for your lips too. Use a balm with ingredients to nourish and care for your lips. Bobbi Brown’s Lip Balm (£15) has both SPF15 and is a great choice with a combination of wheat germ and olive oil to keep chapped lips at bay.
SUMMER COMPLEXION For that beautiful summer complexion I suggest opting for a tinted moisturiser. It will give the appearance of a healthy glow whilst feeling light and natural on the skin. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser (£34) is fantastic and also provides SPF20 to keep your skin protected. For those with fairer skin, always top this up to a minimum of factor 30. DON’T LET IT SLIP As the weather starts to heat up, so does our makeup. To counteract this, switch to a waterproof mascara to prevent any makeup meltdowns. I love No7 Extreme Length Waterproof Mascara (£12.50). It creates the most perfect fluttery lashes without the panda eyes look. And as an extra step, be sure to use a primer underneath your makeup to avoid it from slipping during the day. DARE TO BARE? If you’re wanting a subtle boost to your complexion you could try using a gradual tanner. Prep the skin by using a scrub to remove any dead skin cells. I
wouldn’t be without Soap and Glory’s Sugar Crush Body scrub (£8) – it has the most delicious scent! As gradual tanners are buildable there’s no need to worry about any streaky patches and there’s no hassle as you just use it like your usual body lotion. For your face try No7’s Naturally Sunkissed Gradual Face Tan (£9.95) and for body Garnier Skin Naturals Summer Body Moisturising Lotion (£4.99).

NEON IS BACK Just when you though this seasons style couldn’t get much more cliche, you started reading this sentence. Yes, this page is full of colour – it is spring after all – but I’m not going to bore you with the tired old trends, nor convince you that you do look great in that daring shade of (insert most featured colour here). Oh no, this month ladies, I’m going to run you through neons; Grace style. Words by Grace Parry, fashion and lifestyle writer Neons aren’t the usual colour pallete that springs to mind at this time of year. At best, I can work with pastels, but never brights, so you can imagine how I feel when those brights are ramped up a little – or a lot. This year something seems to have snapped. No more are the colours a cross between the worst of the ‘80s and your trusty office highlighter. They’re vibrant, charming and so much calmer than you could ever imagine possible when picturing a neon. Think natural fruits and florals or maybe even just a slice or a petal popping up in your wardrobe; that’s what neon means this spring! Take the Warehouse print top – it’s most definitely not what would come to mind when the horrifying neon name is dropped, yet it still forms part of the trend. The yellow outline against the neutrals is just enough to bring a fresh breath to spring florals and show you mean business when it comes to this current trend stuff!
Now if you’re on board with the yellow but fancy yourself a little more daring, Hobbs have your perfect Tee. Dubbed striking sunflower, the cut and colour couldn’t be teamed more perfectly with skinnies for day or a skirt for the evening, wouldn’t you agree? Oasis have really caught my eye for spring. I have not one, but two-come-three looks for you courtesy of the High Street wonder. I’m a diehard advocate of matching sets, or co-ords, if you will. The prominent pink Tee and Midi combo are the best I’ve spotted so far. The print is vibrant and modern, without being to overbearing. And best of all? You can take them as separates to team with block colour or wear them as a set – it’s practically a weeks wardrobe in one! Next comes the pleated lace number, again courtesy of Oasis. If there’s one thing I know about brights and neons, it’s their relationship with neutrals. If you’re looking to try something brighter but want it to have a more subtle effect,
this is the dress for you. The lace overlay gives the perfect pop of colour that you know would be too powerful on it’s own! Finally I’m going to leave you with a couple of classics. Karen Millen know their colours. Best of all, they know how to style them.
Whether it’s a bright skinny (a la lime) or a bold jacket (in cool cobalt), Karen Millen always promise an on-trend look by teaming up with a monochrome base; think black or white accompanying attire. So next time you want to wince at the word neon, smile instead. Take the tasteful approach and wear them with pride. If the teaming co-ords is a bit too bold, try subtle accents in prints or a pop of colour with block black and/or white, even with accessories. It’ll be a lot easier than you think!

Hair
Style Yourself Gorgeous We speak to Kara Hair & Beauty to find out about their one-stop salon that caters to all your hair and beauty needs... 1. What is the history behind Kara Hair, where did it originate from? The name ‘Kara’ comes from its founder, Kara Ball, who in 1967 opened her first salon in Northgate Street, with the help of her husband, Tom. After several successful years, Tom went to London to learn some new skills at one of Vidal Sassoon’s top training schools and brought a new level of cutting and styling back with him. They soon went on to opening more salons in the Oxebode and in Cheltenham. In 2011 we moved into our biggest premises so far in Southgate Street, Gloucester, where we have seen great success with our ground floor salon. We have expanded our services even more with hair, beauty and piercing bringing in more customers than ever. Kara having retired in 2013, sons Adrian and Karl, now run the salon and both hope to improve upon what is one of Gloucester biggest and longest running salons. 2. When did you introduce the beauty section to the salon; which treatments do you find most popular? In 1990 Kara introduced beauty treatments into her salon. Focusing originally on weight loss and muscle toning; however these days the beauty business now includes many services like massage, waxing, spray tanning, teeth whitening and much much more. There are several relaxing private treatment rooms and many of our customers return especially for our new CACI treatments. 3. What is CACI, who is this best for? CACI is a non-invasive treatment that targets ageing with dramatic visible results without the need for surgery. With great reviews from celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Lisa Snowdon, CACI has proven to be one of our more popular treatments. Not only does it target wrinkles and lines it will help tone muscles in the face and body. The CACI hydatone treatment combines electrically conductive face firming rollers
with the hydro mask which has an instant soothing and calming effect to reduce redness and irritation. There is a light therapy that uses specific wavelengths of coloured light that has proven to be very effective on ache and blemishes. 4. You have a body piercing studio; what made you decide to branch into that? Having offered ear piercing since Kara first opened, it was only a matter of time and changes in fashion before Kara decided to branch into other areas of piercing. It was in the early 90's when seeing a model walking the catwalk with her navel pierced on TV that Tom suggested we offer that service in the salon. We now offer many types of piercings from the waist up including surface piercings and skin divers. 5. How would you guide someone who for medical reasons, wanted to get a wig. Could they be certain that it would look as natural as possible? We have a private consultation room where clients can have a one to one chat with one of our trained stylists who will help them choose the style of the wig they desire. Through a series of questions and books the client can look through, it’s possible to have a wig custom made that fits perfectly, looks natural and feels real for each individual. We can offer advice on how to maintain their wig and what to do when the natural hair starts to grow back. We work closely with ‘The Little Princess Trust’ and have helped many children and teenagers through difficult times. If a wig is for a medical reasons the client is exempt from paying VAT. 6. What treatment would you offer to someone who has thick, unruly hair that seems to frizz at every opportunity? Whether it's frizz, dandruff, dry hair or just plain unruly hair, we can help you. All of our staff are trained in what to look for
and how to offer you the best advice. There are plenty of in salon treatments and products for the client to take and use at home. I sometimes think that with so many cheap products available in the supermarkets, a lot of people would rather save money by spending less on their hair, but for just a little more and the right advice they could have hair that shines and looks great all the time. 7. Are there any treatments that you would offer to men who want to indulge a bit of pampering but that wouldnít feel too feminine? The line between masculinity and femininity is getting thinner and thinner with more men having spray tans, eyebrow shapes and waxing than ever before. But for those who consider themselves to be 'real men' we have a dedicated barbering section where they can get their hair cut and even lie back in one of our barbering chairs for a good old fashioned wet shave. There are plenty of other options like waxing and massage that many men return regularly for. 8. What is the best way for people to get in contact with you? If you wish to make an appointment please call us on 01452 526940. You can also contact us by email at salon@kara.uk.com or join us on Facebook or Twitter @Kara Gloucester. We look forward to seeing you soon at Kara Hair & Beauty where we “Promise the best”

Charity
A Sporting Event with a Twist We speak to Danny Callaghan and Rich Benson ahead of their sporting fundraising night in June for Winston’s Wish... Winston’s Wish is one of those charities that once you hear about the work they do, you never forget them; they resonate with people from all walks of life. Winston’s Wish supports children and young people following the death of a close family relative by helping them to come to terms with their loss and build confidence and hope. Danny Callaghan and Rich Benson (pictured) have created a somewhat unique way of raising money for this magnificent charity; a sporting event, yet this is by no means a run-of-the-mill sporting event. On the 12th June, Danny and Rich alongside 70 guests will embark upon Tailors in Cheltenham, for night filled with professional croupiers, poker, sports memorabilia, a raffle and a charity auction. The event will also coincide with one of the biggest events in football – the England vs Italy match. Rich says, “It will be an opportunity to spend the entire evening with us. There will be a lot of people there who are really into it, some real high octane power. We all enjoy taking a punt and have a real competitive streak in us, so I imagine there will be a fantastic and somewhat adrenaline filled atmosphere on the night”. So, why Winston’s Wish? Rich poignantly said, “It’s that type of charity that once exposed, people will want to donate. I think that is especially true for parents. God forbid if anything were to happen, I think it puts people into a reflective mode that if we were to go, there is a charity there that can support the children”. Elizabeth of Winston’s Wish says, “We rely almost entirely on individuals like Danny and Rich to raise money for us to maintain our services and support more bereaved children.” Events like these are so important and expectations will naturally be high. Despite not setting a definite target, I can just sense that
these two are determined to make it a huge success. Tailors was a natural venue choice, “It’s the best known sports bar in town and Susie has supported us in the way of levying the room hire fee, putting extra staff on. It really was the perfect place to hold the event”, says Danny. The response to the event has been impressive; a waiting list of 200 is steadily rising despite there being just 70 places available. Nevertheless, you can still be involved and donate to this wonderful cause by either donating online, entering the raffle or bidding for the auction prizes. The evening will commence with Danny interviewing Elizabeth and one of the people that has experienced Winston’s Wish firsthand. Rich noted: “I think if that doesn’t get tears in the audience - I don’t know what will. It will help reinforce why we are all there and why the charity is so important”. The event will be audited by a certified accountant to prove that every single penny will be going to charity. Danny added, “We’ve created, alongside Winston’s Wish who are doing the main work on the website, a page which gives people the opportunity to donate who may not be going to the event. There are three ways that people can do this: donate, buy a raffle ticket, or to bid for one of the auction prizes. Auction prizes will include: A box at Ascot, a return trip to the Isle of Wight on a skippered yacht, tickets for top sporting events, memorabilia from top
premiership clubs and a holiday abroad and much more. There will also be a prestigious poker tournament for the Frank Callaghan and Jimmy Benson silver trophy. Cash prizes for the winner, second place and third there will even be consolation trophies! The tournament, scheduled for two and a half hours, will result in the winner being handed the Frank & Jimmy Memorial Cup; a cup in memory of both Danny’s father, Frank Callaghan, who passed away at 60 and Rich’s brother, Jimmy Benson, who died at 40. Having lost members of their immediate family is yet another reason why this charity is so important to each of them. Rich says, “It’s going to be a really great trophy, with the winners names engraved on it – in fact, we’re all so competitive that you may even see us both trying to win it!”. www.winstonswish.org.uk

You’ve nothing to fear – Cheltenham’s Tooth Fairies are here! If the thought of visiting the dentist fills you with dread, you’re not alone, says Arnica Dental... Dental phobia is a very common phenomenon among adults and children alike, and many people would choose to suffer a toothache in silence rather than get it treated. Of course, avoiding the dentist altogether is the worst thing you can do, as it will only lead to more complex issues further down the line. The great news for dental-phobic people in Cheltenham is that, whether it’s a routine check-up or a more complex treatment you need, Dr Sarah Higham and Dr Leah Adams of Arnica Dental Care (pictured) are on hand to allay your fears. As well as making anxious patients feel at ease with their friendly chairside manner, both Sarah and Leah are experts in dental sedation. In fact, along with principal dentist Dr Ellie Ledger, they form one of the most qualified and experienced dental sedation teams in the region. Dental sedation is a process that involves the use of drugs to help patients relax during a dental procedure. Arnica Dental Care, Cheltenham’s Dental Sedation Centre, provide a range of sedation techniques including intravenous sedation, oral sedation, inhalation sedation and ‘gentle dentistry’ – all of which are highly effective in reducing anxiety when administered by highly skilled professionals like Sarah and Leah. Qualifying from Guy’s Hospital in 1993, Sarah has over twenty years’ experience of working in both general practice and hospital dentistry. She gained her Postgraduate Diploma in Sedation in 1998 and later spent four 92 MAY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
years in Australia teaching a Postgraduate Diploma in Sedation at Sydney University before joining Arnica. A board member of SAAD (The National Society for Dental Sedation), Sarah shares her passion for dental sedation by lecturing and mentoring local dentists on the subject. Dr Leah Adams qualified from Birmingham University in 1997. After gaining five years’ experience in hospital, general practice and community dentistry, Leah spent five years specialising in treating nervous and anxious adults and children before joining Arnica in 2007. Always keen to push herself and develop new skills, she completed a Diploma in Conscious Sedation at Cardiff University and has recently completed a Master’s Degree in Dental Sedation. As a clinical lecturer in Conscious Sedation at Cardiff Dental School, Leah also teaches sedation to undergraduate dental students and postgraduates. Whilst both Sarah and Leah are passionate about teaching, they are at
their happiest when providing dental treatment for the people of Cheltenham. Whether it’s a routine procedure like a filling or more complex treatments like dental implants, they understand and empathise with anxious patients, and there is nothing more rewarding to them than treating such individuals. And it’s not just anxious adults, either – Sarah and Leah are also experienced in providing dental treatment for children. As mums themselves, they are able to quickly establish a rapport with them, which creates a relaxed environment for the nervous child (and the nervous parent!). So if you’re currently enduring a toothache and can’t pluck up the courage to get it looked at, or if you’re worried about anything at all related to your oral health, contact Arnica Dental Care today – they soon put a gleaming smile back on your face. “BE THE BEST”
Firstly, congratulations Jessica, you must be very proud. Thank you! I am thrilled with the outcome of the awards, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine winning one let alone two awards! It was a huge nod to the team at Earl’s for all their hard work.
Your team feature a lot on the trip advisor and Facebook reviews, they obviously contribute a great deal the shops reputation, how do you select your staff and ensure they gel so well together and with clients. It isn’t easy! We have six members now, seven including myself. They are all individual with their own unique style and way with customers. They all work to the core values of Earl’s & Co. whilst adding their own personality to the mix. The results are a genuine group of people doing what they love in a place that they love. You mentioned the ‘core values’ of Earl’s & Co. what values do you instil in your team? I tell them to ‘Be the Best’ weather that’s making the best cup of coffee, doing the best mani/pedi or haircut, whatever it is; be the best at it. It’s easy to sit back on your laurels but if you’re constantly striving to be the best, you will be. Customers notice the attention to detail and the high standard of service, they comment on it and in turn it encourages the team to go further.
Let’s talk about the Awards! The first one was for Young Entrepreneur of the Year, how was it winning that? Did you see yourself as an Entrepreneur? It was surreal! I have never labelled myself as an entrepreneur but when I embarked on this journey into the business world I was curious and optimistic; I wasn’t afraid to turn my hand to anything. I guess that’s what an entrepreneur is. I love watching my business grow and can’t wait for the next steps. Being awarded this is confirmation to me that I am doing ok and to keep going!
Jessica Earl cleaned up at the Women & Business Awards last month winning New Business of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the year just 18 months after launching her new concept business; A Traditional Barbers, Whisky Bar & Lounge. Champagne Nail & Beauty Bar. Here we find out what makes a young entrepreneur tic and how Earl’s & Co. has become such a roaring success in Cheltenham
You have recently been made a mentor for Virgin StartUp. Do you feel that now you have the award you are able to give more to your role? I hope so! It is a great honour to be mentoring some of Britain’s best young entrepreneurs. Virgin has inspired me throughout my career and has now enabled so many people to do what I did 18 months ago. I hope I can offer them some productive pieces of advice and encouragement. The second award was for New Business of the year. We have so many businesses that have started over the last few years, what makes Earl’s & Co. stand out? The support we get from our customers is second to none. We all go above and beyond every day ensuring that we offer a fantastic service to every single person that comes through the door, emails or calls. Our customers pick up on that and they tell their friends or write reviews. Without that kind of support we wouldn’t be where we are right now. People ‘get’
Earl’s & Co. and what we are trying to do, they are embracing our brand which is all we could ask for.
There always seems to be something up your sleeve Jess, what’s on the horizon for you and Earl’s? That is the million pound question! I’ll let you know when I know! In the short term we are gearing up for summer, already getting busy with bride/groom parties, and providing more and more Whisky tastings. We have expanded and added another treatment/tan/waxing room so we now occupy three storeys! It’s all going on! Mostly we are maintaining our core values and having fun while we do it! Thank you for your time Jessica. If you’d like to see what all the fuss is about, head to Earl’s & Co. on 19 Regent Street. A Traditional Barbers, Whisky Bar & Lounge with a Champagne Nail & Beauty Bar for ladies. (What’s not to love?) www.earlsandco.com

Your questions answered by Erin Sawyer at Jordans Solicitors
Q
My husband and I got married 4 years ago, after living together for 6 years. We have had some difficulties recently and we are now separated. I have stayed in the house we have lived in during our relationship, as our son, who is 6 months old, is settled here. I don't work as I left my job in recruitment to look after our son, and my husband earns quite a decent income. My husband is now saying that because he owns the house I am living in with our son, and he bought it before we moved in together and we've only been married a short time, I'm not entitled to anything from the house or from him and I will have to move out to a rented property. I am really worried about this because I don't have any income of my own and I can't afford to rent, whereas the mortgage on my husband's house is only ÂŁ150 per month, but it's only worth ÂŁ130,000. What can I do?
A
I do not know whether your husband has yet had legal advice himself, but it seems to me that he is just trying to scare you. The fact that you have only been married for 4 years is not of particular significance, if your husband and you lived together for the period of 6 years and transitioned seamlessly into marriage. On this basis, the Court would consider that the relevant length of your relationship is 10 years. In any event, because you have a very young child, your son's needs (and thus your needs, as his primary carer) will be of primary concern to the Court. This will include your housing and income needs.
It is not the case that because your husband purchased a property before you both began living together, that the property cannot be regarded by the Court as an asset available for division. In any event, I anticipate that the Court would consider it necessary to provide you with a home for your son and you. You have not told me whether your husband or you have any other significant assets, but if not, clearly it will be difficult for both your husband and you to purchase houses with net proceeds of sale of less than ÂŁ130,000, and you will have no significant mortgage capacity in the foreseeable future. You have said that your husband earns a reasonable salary. Your husband will have a statutory obligation to pay your Child Maintenance, which will be calculated by reference to his income. I would suggest that you contact the Child Maintenance Service to deal with this particular issue at this stage.
You may also have a claim for spousal maintenance which would mean that your husband would have to give you a specified sum each month, probably for a particular period of time, the duration of which will depend on a number of circumstances. It is possible that the Court may take the view that your son and you should stay in the house in which you are living for the foreseeable future, but this will depend on whether you can afford to do so, by reference to all income sources, including maintenance from your husband, state benefits, and any other income you may receive. As your son is still very young, I do not think that the Court would absolutely require you to return to work at this stage, but certainly as you previously had a career in recruitment, there would be some expectation that you will return to work in the future, either on a fulltime basis or perhaps initially on a part-time basis. This will impact your ability to continue to afford living in your current house, or elsewhere.
The Court will take into account your husband's housing needs as well, and these needs will be balanced with your needs and those of your son, but they are not equally weighted. For example, the Court may take the view that your husband should continue to live in rented accommodation, or that he could raise a small deposit through his income in order to buy a property, with the aid of a mortgage, as he will, I anticipate, have a greater mortgage capacity than you in the reasonably foreseeable future.
The Court has a fairly wide discretion in dividing assets and addressing the needs of the parties in each case. The above is intended to give you an example of the types of orders the Court can make. I would need full and frank disclosure of your financial position and that of your husband before I could provide you with more definitive advice, but rest assured, it is unlikely in the extreme that the Court would leave your son and you in the sort of position your husband has suggested. Privacy, email and right to a private life This month has seen the French reach a national agreement to stop workers answering phones and emails after 6pm. Indeed our Gallic cousins have made it illegal for workers to actually answer such approaches in their own time. Apart from fuelling stereotypes about long meals involving good wine and cheese, it is about family. Will it happen here and does email interfere with family? The answer is that it probably won’t, not in the foreseeable future. For a start, this legislation has not been handed down from Europe, but is French domestic legislation. It does, however, cause a moment of reflection on such matters, not least because the poor beleaguered British employment lawyer (!) is constantly approached about problems arising from electronic communications and stress. There is a myth within British industry that an employer cannot look at an employee’s emails. While this view is not universal it is, in my experience, widespread. Various sources of this position are quoted, the right to a private life, the Data Protection Act or the contract of employment. As a nation we appear paralysed by anything electronic in communication and employers often lose sight of the big picture. For example, some years back a lawyer at this firm was asked the question “Can I look at an employee’s internet history?” The answer came back “Probably, why do you want to look?” The employer replied “We have had a complaint from a cleaner, she entered Mr X’s office yesterday evening and found him sat at his computer with his trousers around his ankles”. The big question for the lawyer was “Why do you need to see his internet history, is this not enough to take action?” This example highlights the paralysis experienced by employers. If Mr X had been thumbing the pages of a “girly magazine” would the employer have felt the need to examine the magazine? Of course not. (As an aside, if Mr X had a shred of decency he would have cleared his desk and slipped off that evening.) For some reason because the medium was electronic, no one could see the wood for the trees. To set the record straight, the Data
Darren Sherborne
Protection Act states that you cannot review an employee’s email if the employee has a “reasonable expectation of privacy”. The extent to which someone has such an expectation on a work computer is open to debate. However, as long as the employer has made it clear either in the contract or in a policy or handbook, that no such expectation exists, then all doubt is removed. The employer’s hand is strengthened further by other legislation which allows the interception of email if something suggests wrongdoing, such as the subject heading. The same goes for internet visits. Whilst undoubtedly providing huge benefits, electronic communications work against us all in many ways. Access to limitless information and immediate legally binding communications are something that we don’t appear to have evolved the mental ability to deal with yet. Many spend as much of their day as possible hypnotised by endless images and trivia about the things that interest us, Facebook, ebay Wikipedia, often instead of doing the work that we leave home to do in the first place. Then after such a day, we come home and spend the time we should be treating as our own answering
emails. In the worst cases, this leads to stress, illness and all sorts of unhappiness. So what should employers do about this modern confusion? The answer lies with the employers philosophy on such things, there is no magic formula. If an employer is concerned, the best action is to ensure a robust policy setting out what can and can’t be done electronically, and when it can be done. At least the employer is then free to act appropriately should the need arise. For my part I would ensure that employees are clear about their limits of binding authority. After all, a binding contract can be created by email, and because responses can be so swift, such contracts can be made without much thought. But going back to my original point, I don’t see the French approach catching on in this country yet. There is an overly developed sense of own rights in the UK which is not matched by people’s sense of obligation. Stop them answering emails in the evening and some won’t do any work at all! But it is wise to keep an eye on those assiduous employees who work at all hours. Of course we all know someone who answers emails at midnight or 5 in the morning and copies in colleagues, more of a demonstration of the need for attention, or poor organisational skills than any amount of work done, but there are still plenty who run themselves ragged keeping up with high workloads. Look after them, they are worth keeping. Darren Sherborne is a partner at Sherbornes Solicitors LLP and specialises in employment law. www.sherbornesllp.co.uk

Following the recent release of the fifth report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR5), there is finally more than 99% certainty that manmade climate change exists and that radical change is required to control the devastating impacts which will arise if we continue at our current trajectory. This may not be the most uplifting opening gambit for an environmental feature – but it certainly sets in context the fact that organisations that are putting sustainability front and centre of their business strategy should no longer be viewed as alternative or ‘green’. In the coming years legislation, regulation and natural selection will ensure that responsible business is the norm, and it really will be a case of ‘adapt or die’. Whole industries are in massive transition now: – energy, construction, automotive, aerospace, food and drink, apparel – in fact wherever you look you will see examples of innovation, diversification and adaptation. Economists are referring to this period as ‘divergence’. It follows the industrial revolution in the nineteenth century, consumerism and the information age in the mid-late twentieth century. The 21st century is characterised by an overwhelmingly complex set of sociopolitical and economic factors topped off
by the spectre of climate change which is so visibly evidenced by extreme and chaotic weather and natural events which we can no longer ignore. With this acceptance that there will be no such option as ‘business as usual’, it is great to recognise and celebrate the Cotswold businesses which have taken a strategic view and are either adapting their existing model to become future-proof; or identifying opportunities in new and emerging sectors to ensure they are wellplaced for new market growth. Indeed, with global green trade predicted to reach $2.2 trillion by 2020 (UNEP, 2013 Green Economy and TradeTrends, Challenges and Opportunities) there is certainly every reason to reap the rewards of the new eco-nomy.

benefits of installing green products in the home” www.bence.co.uk
The George Bence group are Gloucestershire’s leading independent builder merchant, established in 1854 they pride themselves on their high quality of customer service awhile keeping up to date with the industries latest technologies. We spoke to Bence about their dedicated renewable energy saving centre called Primera Eco. Primera Eco has been set up to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy costs in the Gloucestershire area. Bence gave us a brief summary of the services they offer “our saving centre offers a full range of energy saving products from heat pumps to insulation”. Bence also have plans to reduce their carbon footprint, they are in the process of changing their existing lights to more energy efficient LEDs and are currently trying to recycle as much waste as possible. Bences offices and warehouse currently recycle approximately 80% of their waste through metal and plastic recycling to paper and cardboard. As well as improving their own sustainability Bence also try and educate their client base in the values of using sustainable materials, they see this as an important part of the construction supply chain. Bence gave some advice for people looking to live a more sustainable life, they urged readers to come and visit their renewable centre where they can receive individual feedback related to the size of their home. With the governments latest green initiatives, Bence have seen an increase in the demand for greener products. Although they stated the scheme didn’t really kick off, they said it achieved, “greater exposure to the cost saving
Ecotricity Ecotricity is a fully accredited under the EU’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is the gold standard for business environmental management. They reached this standard in 2010 and joined the elite group of organisations in the UK. They are currently still the only energy company in the whole of Europe with EMAS across all of their operations. They recently published their fourth annual environmental report named 'Our Footprint Report' this gives the company a clear picture of what their impacts are, their progress over the last three years and what they need to become a zero carbon organisation Ecotricity are so focused on living a sustainable life that they run on 100% renewable energy with 40% self generated from their windmills. The remainder of this percentage is purchased from other renewable generators. As a core value Ecotricitys mission was and still remains to change the way electricity is made and used in Britain. In 1996 Green electricity didn’t exist and Ecotricity became not only Britain’s but also the world's first green electricity company. Ecotricitys main future goal is to eventually source 100% of the green energy they supply to their own business and to their customers from their own renewable generator. When speaking to Stuart Brennan, he says they are
currently at 40% of this goal. I asked Stuart what was the best advice to give readers that want to live a more sustainable life and he says to look at how you choose to spend your money on the 3 everyday necessities; energy, transport and food. By looking and changing this it could influence up to 80% of your environmental footprint. Ecotricity believe that people should be treated the way in which our selves would like to be treated. By this they offer their customers a one simple tariff for their electricity and one for the gas, customers are always on the latest best price regardless to when they joined the company and customers are allowed to leave ecotricity whenever they wish with no penalties. Ecotricity as a company like to make a difference to the environment in other ways such as recycling. They recycle all office waste such as paper, plastic, cans and cardboard and all their IT equipment is recycled through the WEEE regulations, which stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Their recycling rate has increased from 61.36% in 2009 to 75.90% in 2013. www.ecotricity.co.uk

Space Catering Space catering were founded in 2000, they are currently one of the UK’s leading commercial kitchen design companies, they are based in Gloucester and regularly hold live cookery displays where they showcase the latest cooking methods and equipment. Space Catering pride themselves with high levels of professionalism, attention to detail and innovative design ethos. They aim to provide clients with catering equipment that is more sustainable and energy efficient than the norm. Space catering told us about their initiative called 'green footprint', this is where
equipment that meets specific energy saving criteria is identified. Space Catering are attempting to reduce their carbon footprint by having company cars that have a very low C02 output, all lights in the meeting rooms, toilets and stores are on PIR switches, which means they cannot be left on. Both these methods attempt to reduce the companies CO2 emissions and improve their sustainability as a business. Space Catering also help their customers with their carbon c02 footprint by teaching them how to be more energy efficient with their products. When asked about their core green values Space Catering replied with "delivering sustainable solutions is a big part of what we do and we are well known in the industry as specialists in this field" They have won the award for the most sustainable food service installations for the work they did at 5 star eco hotel in Cornwall called the scarlet. Due to media exposure, Space Catering has seen a vast increase in interest for their sustainable solutions, which has lead to winning some prestigious awards and increasing their profile in the trade media. www.spacecatering.co.uk

Sustainable Direction Ltd Sustainable Direction Ltd (SDL) is a consultancy firm specialising in sustainability and the environment. They help organisations to identify ways to be more profitable and successful starting with how they can reduce their environmental impact, from their energy use to the amount of waste they generate. SDL was founded in 2005 by John Henry Looney and started trading 2 years later in 2007. I met with John Henry, the founder of Sustainable Direction to learn a bit more about what his company offers their clients, and what they do to help the environment. Since 2007, John Henry and his team have seen a huge increase year after year in the demand for organisations wanting to be more sustainable. A lot of their clients have heard about Sustainable Direction through recommendation and word of mouth and this is increasing the demand for their services. They have helped companies double production, debottleneck productively, win awards and recognition and, importantly, reduce both their bills and carbon footprint. The team also goes above and beyond to reduce their carbon footprint. It is part of the job description to have a passion for environmentally friendly living and this is strongly put across when trying to help clients. One of the team member’s cycles to work instead of driving, John Henry walks to work to reduce his carbon footprint as well as owning a Honda Hybrid to drive when walking or cycling is not appropriate. The team takes the train when possible to again reduce their carbon footprint when travelling long distances. A third of their electricity a year is powered by solar panels and the heating is generated by waste energy from office waste onsite. John Henry and his team base their core values on the Brundtland Commission’s definition of sustainability: “development which meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
This is also the message they try to get out to their clients, by defining needs and ways to meet these through efficiency and reinventing the way they do business. They want organisation to understand what sustainability looks like for them and their goals before making changes, and some of this involves making it personal, looking at your work footprint as well as your home footprint and seeing how you can incorporate them together to be more sustainable in your everyday life. www.sustainabledirection.com
Whole Foods Market Whole Foods Market has a ‘Green Mission’ team in every store that is made up with representatives from each department. This allows them to discuss relevant 'green' issues, ensuring each team becomes more effective, leading to benefits across the store. A good example of their ‘Green Mission’ working in front of their customers is that you’ll notice is the fresh produce, which is loose and unpacked. Not only does fruit and veg look far better when it’s not wrapped, it cuts out wasteful packaging. You’ll also see this in their ‘Cook department’ where we sell rice, pulses, nuts and other ingredients ‘loose’. Customers can buy as much or as little as they like by filling up a bag there and then. No ‘packaging’ to speak of – just the essentials. Whole Foods Market pride themselves on buying as locally as possible with the UK as a priority for seeking out the best natural and organic suppliers. Reducing carbon emissions is important to them across the business; from transporting
their supplies to making sure they make the most of resources such as teleconferencing, even down to making sure their people – as well as their products aren’t costing the earth valuable carbon. The stores are independently audited by the Soil Association to ensure organic integrity of ingredients and share their view that organic is food you can trust, better for the environment and animal welfare. Bees, butterflies and the soil all benefit from organic agriculture. The own-label milk is organically produced and they only sell cage-free eggs. As a company that champions natural and organic food and beauty products, environmental concerns are part of the stringent ‘test’, which they put each and every product through. Whole Foods want their customers to be reassured that the products they sell are as environmentally sound as they can be. The stores also operate several initiatives, which reinforces how serious they are about the environment that we live in. One initiative is, ‘Zero Waste’ Days, are held monthly; a snap shot of the weight of waste being produced by their stores and they aim to improve on this each time. The result from their last day was 92% diversion away from landfill. They plan to keep improving this number as much as possible! www.wholefoodsmarket.com

I’ve never really liked tree-huggers and I’m not that keen on lentils either. Having said that, even a ‘greenostine’ like me can appreciate the need to protect and covet the environment, especially in the way that we develop new buildings and road systems. Let’s face it the oil is running out and the planet is getting warmer. Not sure? Just ask the mob down on the Somerset Levels. We all need to do our bit. Going green isn’t easy. It’s sometimes just seen as toadying and pandering to the ‘new order’. Being sustainable for any business is complicated and needs a degree of knowledge and indeed passion to ensure all the green boxes get ticked. It’s a sensible and forward thinking company that can do this and actually mean it. Formed in 1960, the very year that the birth control pill was released Britannia Construction (based just outside Cheltenham) was born. So we’re not talking about a young fledgling company here. From little and humble beginnings this local firm has grown to a £30M turnover employing at any one time over 300 staff. Britannia specialise in construction and civil engineering with an enviable record of fast track, innovative and sustainable delivery

solutions across a huge selection of projects. They’ve earned a reputation for high quality and reliability, backed up by long-term relationships with many of their clients and consultants. Their teams have over the years, developed specialist skills and expertise across the retail, commercial, industrial, leisure and infrastructure sectors. It’s a real mix of skill sets born out of long experience and a commitment to quality. Paul Halfpenny, MD at Britannia Construction steers the company knowing full well that the sustainability and ‘green build ‘options of all his companies’ projects need to be fully on their radar. Paul spent the majority of his 25-year construction industry career in the South and West of England. His experience spans many sectors across Construction and Civil Engineering. So he knows a thing or two. This Managing Director is in a sense a bit of a Robin Hood. He’s a champion of causes

that directly affect the environment and hugely committed to ensuring that his company do make a difference to the environment in the way that they operate. Paul Halfpenny comments, ‘in my view business efficiency is directly linked to the awareness you have about the environment. We take our responsibility here at Britannia Construction very seriously when it comes to recycling, waste and the way we operate the business on a day-to-day basis’. The full

remit of the business is both extensive and embraces several sectors; Construction, Civil Engineering, Design/Build and specialist minor works. The latest project at Emersons Green near Bristol is a shining example of really managing the resource and the impact the project has had on the local green footprint. The project encompassed the design and construction of the primary infrastructure for a new village which will have approx. 3000 new homes, light industrial units, 3 schools and communal areas. It’s a massive project
and the environmental impact was really put under the green microscope. Paul Halfpenny goes on to further comment, ‘this was a huge project for us and we were determined that where we could recycle and manage the footprint better we would’. In fact Britannia Construction was so smart they even managed to hew the rocks and rubble from beneath the road to be used in creating the walls that surround the roads. That’s simply ecological smartness meeting up with business efficiency. Paul goes on to further say,’ it’s a very simple equation. Reducing your waste and recycling what you can does make your business more efficient at the bottom line. It’s attractive in both terms of finance and environmental contribution’. In fact at Emersons Green they even deployed extensive ecological measures to deal with a number of badger sets, slow worms, reptiles and bats. David Attenborough would be very impressed. Making an impact on the environment for any company has to be

“It’s my mission here to empower people where I can. I’m a great believer that you should let people get on with their job” instilled from the top and Paul further says. ‘it’s my mission here to empower people where I can. I’m a great believer that you should let people get on with their job. The staff were very pro-active here in determining the initial burst of activity when it came to recycling and waste’. On all their projects Britannia strive to do everything possible to ensure the impact on the environment is kept to an absolute minimum; through the selection of sustainable materials, minimizing waste, avoidance of air and noise pollution to adjacent land/building occupiers… and safe working practices. Just look at the recent seventh death in Brazil over the World Cup stadia building to see why good working practices are essential. Environmental issues are a major consideration through-out every project programme that Britannia are
working on. When they appoint design consultants, they look to businesses with a similar ethos towards the environment, taking into account past record, experience and attitude towards sustainable construction. It’s a green package from concept through to completion. On site they encourage sub-contractors to minimize waste by appointing them on a supply and labour basis wherever possible. Recycling of materials is also encouraged; this is especially relevant to the many restoration projects they undertake. In addition, both air and noise pollution is taken into consideration when carrying out any activity. Nobody wants a noisy neighbour! Britannia have also implemented practices to reduce their carbon footprint too and this in itself completes the circle to take us back to a warming planet and what companies
doing about it? Paul finally comments. ’every company can do what we are doing. They just simply need the desire. It’s not difficult and in many cases you end up saving money’ It’s a far cry from the ‘bulldoze and be dammed’ attitude that some other construction companies have. This is a company that cares and do what they do without cynicism. They’re clearly big enough to cope but bijou enough to define their own direction and stamp on the environment. They’re also corporate members of the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, which further highlights their recognition to the overall responsibilities they have to the natural environment whilst executing the various projects. So you see the toads need not worry. For more information www.britanniaconstruction.co.uk

A Fresh Approach to Cleaning
Alice Lloyd speaks to Claire Blizard of The Big Green Cleaning Company
Ten years ago it's fair to say that a typical response to telling people that they need separate their waste and recycling, would be to quite simply, laugh and sha In fact, if you told someone they need to be more ‘green,’ they might have thought you’d gone around the bend. They’d whisper to others, ‘that person is doolally - they told me to paint myself green!’ Not Claire Blizard. This entrepreneur, with excellent marketing and advertising experience had a vision and saw a necessity to make the world that little bit more eco-friendly. Claire started up her own cleaning company, formerly known as ‘Green Mop’, which has now been rebranded
114 MAY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
as ‘The Big Green Cleaning Company.’ It offers a wide range of services including domestic, commercial, building sites and end of tenancy cleaning. They will even pop into your house while you are away to check that everything is spick and span - with permission of course! This is a service they offer whilst you’re away on a long break - and you need your mind putting at rest that your house is safe.Alternatively, Claire added, “If you’re having trades people in whilst your away, we clean up after them so you come back to your house clean and no mess plus we will also forward your post if needed”. When asked what it’s all about, Claire said quite plainly; “We only use green products, we keep it simple, we keep it green, we don’t compromise.”
She runs an ethical company with a 15-strong team. “We are different in that sense,” she smiled, “we’re young and funky, we’re not your normal cleaning company. We’re in it together, unlike these large companies that might hire 60-100 people, my employees are not a number, they’ve got names. We look at things differently and take a fresh approach.” Claire’s personality shines through the company as she guarantees to meet every client one-on-one to cater to their needs and supervise her team. So what makes the company so kind to Mother Nature then? Well, all the cleaning products are 100% natural, they use enviro-products that anyone can buy online, such as seaweed oven cleaner or white vinegar spray - which is excellent for glass or marble, but I’ve been warned that it’s not so great to put on your fish and chips. “People say green doesn’t clean very well, green doesn’t smell very nice, well that’s just rubbish!” Claire exclaimed, “You don’t have horrible smelling products these days, ‘green’ has come on in leaps and bounds, and it’s competitively priced.” In fact, she has considered branching out into her own

brand of cleaning products as she receives so many compliments from clients. Eco-friendly products are particularly important in domestic cleaning. “We do a lot with family,” Claire said, “If parents have children with eczema or asthma and they clean a bath with something like ‘Cif,’ they’ll be itching all over. Parents can be quite conscious and they don’t want to use products with harsh chemicals in their house – and they don’t need to!” Saving the world is no easy feat, but if everyone starts small, like reducing waste, we’ll get there
eventually. While the world will thank Claire for her green efforts, businesses will too as the Big Green Cleaning Company can help towards accreditations such as the ISO 14001 compliance. “Being green means we’re adding to their business,” Claire explained, “places like BrightSource have lots of awards up saying, ‘we saved this rainforest over the last 4 years.’ So everyone is doing their bit. It’s all about change, it’s all
about educating these companies that it doesn’t have to be too taxing, but you can do it in very small ways.” The company predominantly covers areas in Worcester and Cheltenham but Claire hopes to expand into Gloucester. Claire is optimistic for the future “give it another 10 years and we won’t have any waste bins.” The company has already cycled into the future as the staff use some nippy, electric bikes to travel to their jobs. PRINTWASTE LEADS THE WAY The business of Printwaste Recycling & Shredding focuses on environmental issues. Our core values emanate from looking at the long term environmental impact; working together with customers and people that care. Working safely and securely, advising and assisting in order to achieve customer’s environmental aims. Making this possible by waste audits and monitoring which changes waste stream content with the clear aim to stop waste and save money. Printwaste leads the way in business recycling with over 99% of all material collected being recycled—near Zero waste to landfill. What’s important about reducing waste? Firstly, it can save the customer a lot of money—a big consideration as we put out of the economic recession. Looking forward, it protects our family’s future as new resources become scarcer— sustainable recycling; the use of material again and again, saves energy, water
and time. The way in which Printwaste works with customers has the potential to improve the quality of life for everybody. We deliver sustainable recycling services to meet the needs of schools, hospitals, councils, shops, factories and offices. We collect and receive over 50,000 tonnes each year working with and recycling almost any type of material which includes: Paper, cardboard, plastics, plastic bottles, tin cans, batteries, metal, wood, WEEE, polystyrene, fluorescent light tubes plus
much more. We achieve this at our three Gloucestershire depots by ensuring our staff, all security vetted, are fully trained and work with environmental objectives such as fuel saving and use of electricity. This fits well with our customers who often recognise their own impact on the environment and want to work with us to achieve sustainable environmental outcomes coupled with cost effective waste management. The use of technology is driving the sustainable economy. Recycled materials are increasing used in manufacturing processes. What is vital in order to achieve zero waste is to design tomorrow’s products so that the materials can be recycled again and again. Printwaste do not design out your waste but we will certainly find the green and sustainable route for it. COME RAIN OR SHINE Sustainable/recycling garden at RHS Malvern Spring Festival Sue Crawford, Rowena Davidson and Samantha Evans have collaborated (as CDE Design) on a garden design which has been chosen as one of four “Festival Show Gardens” to be built at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival. Their garden “Levels: A Garden Come Rain Or Shine” is a garden that faces the challenges created by climate change – particularly increased rainfall. The inspiration for the garden came from the recent torrential rain and flooding in the South West, including in the Cotswolds. Their show garden imagines a young “creative media” couple who require a “work/relax” space outside their ECO

house. Rainwater is collected from the roof via “rain chains” – a modern take on chain “downpipes” used on traditional agricultural buildings. This water is channelled via a pebble rill into a pond, overflowing if necessary into an underground rain cistern. CDE’s design
maximises rain water conservation whilst enhancing the aesthetics of the garden. The sustainable theme continues with recycled birch poles making a fence (to which an outside LCD screen is affixed). The decking could be recycled timber. A “solar” table - charged by sunlight for night time illumination [see picture – solar table by Foscarini] - enhances the curvaceous decking. The garden features solar panels on the roof made from recycled cola cans (to heat the house). The serene planting – predominantly green and white – accommodates both the drier climate and water loving grasses.

C2S Business Update EXECUTIVE FORUM LEARNS HOW RENISHAW APPROACHES NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Words by Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Director of Circle2Success The C2S members were busy during April; meeting each other and sharing ideas about how they might grow their businesses. As testament to the calibre of the businesses engaged in C2S, it was fantastic when on the 21st April the Queens Awards were announced. Of the 5 award winners in the County, C2S members accounted for 3 of them – Fluid Transfer for Export; Prima Dental for Export and Renishaw for Innovation. These awards are only granted to companies that have demonstrated outstanding achievements. Members of the Executive Forum met recently at new C2S members Renishaw’s New Mills Headquarters. They were treated to a rare insight into how Renishaw approach New Product Development. This is a company that has received 19 Queens Awards over the years, many for Innovation as well as Export, so they are well versed in understanding how to create and sustain a culture of innovation. They shared with members their ‘Orange Book’, which has been 10 years in the creation. A new member to the Executive Forum, Gareth Cooke from TTC, said: “It was great to have the opportunity to hear how an excellent company like Renishaw approach this subject and to be able to ask questions and discuss with other members of the Forum how they approach innovation.” Members of C2S are clearly seeing the green shoots of recovery in the economy and investing in their businesses and people. Suganthy Suthagar owns Courtland Dental Practical in Gloucester and she has embarked on an ambitious refurbishment plan to
provide state of the art facilities for patients and create an environment that is comfortable and modern. Suganthy said: “I love working in Gloucester and it is important to me to provide the best possible care for my patients and this needs to be matched by the best possible surroundings. It was a big decision but I know it is the right thing to do and I am very excited about the future.” Courtland Dentist Practice is based at 208 Painswick Road, Gloucester, 01452 304800.
Members of the Business Club met as usual at the Daffodil and heard from Mike Lury of Wine Merchants Corney and Barrow, about a delightful Spanish Rioja and a wonderful Italian Fiano. Members of the C2S Business Club got an opportunity to introduce themselves to each other and say a few words about their business. We also heard from the gorgeous Juliet Crosby, the current Miss Gloucester.. Juliet, as promised, wore her sash and tiara. The next Business Club takes place at the Daffodil on Wednesday 21st May.

Interview
“Run Rabbit Run” Natalie Letch, caught up David Kelman, Ellenborough Park’s 3 AA Rosette head chef, ahead of his appearance on BBC2’s Great British Menu WORDS BY BETH MAHONEY
Renowned for his delightful food, David, who is currently working as the Executive Head Chef at award winning Cotswold country retreat, Ellenborough Park, chatted to Natalie about how he had been hoping to get a chance to go on Great British Menu for the past few years. You might not know this, but David who moved to the Cotswold’s around eight years ago, was previously invited to go on the Great British Menu but turned down the opportunity as he didn’t feel he could represent Wales well enough at the time. A proud Welshman, David has since represented Wales in many culinary competitions, as well as having been fortunate enough to cook for HRH the Prince of Wales and Her Majesty the Queen. After training as a chef in Wales, David moved to the Cotswold’s where he went on to work in some of Gloucestershire’s very best restaurants, serving some of finest food the county has seen. Since turning down the opportunity to appear on BBC Two’s Great British Menu nearly a decade ago, David said how he became a real fan of the program, all the while hoping he would once again get the chance to appear on the show: “I thought to myself; ‘I could do better than that’ - not in an arrogant way, but I could represent Wales in a different way for food.” After moving to Ellenborough Park, David’s hopes of being invited to be part of the Great British Menu became one of his most important personal aims – luckily for him, he was contacted last year and asked to do a screen test for the show’s 2014 ninth series: “They filmed in the kitchen to see how we were with people, banter with guys, cooking – they liked that. All they want to see is what you’re going to be like on camera.” Explaining how much he loves the show, David said how to him personally,
as a chef, it makes him think outside the box: “You’ve got to think about the brief that they give you, the food you’re going to put on the table; the story it tells.” Battling against 2 other Welsh chefs in his category for a chance to cook the 70th World War 2 D Day anniversary banquet that will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral, David’s given dish was entitled ‘Run Rabbit Run’. For David, the decision to use this dish as his signature piece was emotionally significant as it was created in memory of his biggest fan, his Nan, who sadly passed away just a few months before filming took place. Explaining how stressful filming could be, David explained how he isn’t normally an emotional person but broke down due to the emotional pressure and connections to his dish: “There are 3 cameras around you. You get picked up around 6am and leave around 9pm – so it’s a really long day and you’re cooking throughout the day. It is hard. On the second day of filming, you’re tired, stressed, on the main course I actually broke down crying, as I had created
the dish in memory of my Nan.” Being part of this series of Great British Menu, which is set to mark the 70th anniversary of D Day, was also particularly important to David, who recently visited Holland, explaining how he was incredibly moved by the experience, then going on to say how honoured he felt to be in a position to cook for the veterans. Unsure of how he will come cross on television, when asked about how he feels about the airing of the Welsh round of the show, which is set to air on BBC Two on Monday 26th May, David explained how he isn’t looking forward to seeing himself on TV: “I hope I don’t come across as arrogant. I will be hiding at home. I don’t want to be in work while it is on. My wife and kids were interviewed for the programme, so they are nervous, too!”. Don’t forget to tune into BBC2 on 26th May to watch him in action. WIN AN EXCLUSIVE 3 HOUR COOKING LESSON WITH DAVID KELMAN... See page 9 for more details.

Avoid grumpy submariners…. I just love fresh air. The invigoration you get from an oxygen rush is just sublime. Taking away the very air that we breathe is tantamount to suffocation. Just ask any bloke in a submarine that’s been cooped up in a fetid environment for months on end and he’ll set you straight. However and it’s a bit of a confusing however, all wines suffer from too much air in the actual bottle. It’s called oxidisation and it’s the harbinger of doom for anybody who’s trying to keep open bottles of wine at their optimum best. Happily, Mark Stephens, Managing Director at Cheltenham’s famous Daffodil restaurant has now installed a state-of-the-art wine dispenser and chiller that really saves the day, offering customers an incredible tasting experience without gurgling down the whole bottle. It’s genius really. Sometimes you don’t want to drink the contents of the bottle dry. It may be that you just want to sample a glass. Well now you can thanks to some Italian wizardry that Mark has installed. The device is called an ‘Enomatic’ and it does two amazing jobs in one. It keeps any wine at its optimum temperature (not that amazing) but the real magic is in the removal of the aforementioned nasty oxygen by introducing nitrogen, which in essence forces out the oxygen, keeping the wine at the level of quality as if it had never been opened. Brilliant. Mark Stephens said,’ this is a real boon to our customers as we can now offer really fine wines by the glass without the inherent danger of the wine in the bottle reducing in quality or taste. Mark goes on to further comment,’ it also means that we can now suggest small 25ml tasting glasses that will enable our customers to ‘try before they buy’. Now to me, that’s a

revelation. In the real world you can justifiably send a wine back if it’s corked, but certainly not just because you don’t like it. This new delivery system at The Daffodil removes that doubt. Mark also goes on to further say,’ because of this new wine system we can now offer a carafe of really fine wine at an affordable price to the customer without them having to buy the whole bottle’. Again for me that’s a very neat trick in being able to offer different measures of wine from the same bottle. The carafe is 300ml which is easily enough for two over dinner or lunch. Mark also says,’ there is absolutely no compromise to the quality and the wine is as fresh as the day it was first opened. In fact the customer can also have a selection of 125ml glasses from various bottles’. This is a very valid and indeed trendy offer at the moment. We’re under pressure to drink less alcohol
Mark Stephens
which means we should all welcome the return of the small but beautiful 125ml glass. I well remember the bijou 125ml glass of wine. It used to be the standard measure. Then we started getting huge with everything; coffee in vast Americansized cups and fizzy drinks in paper containers the size of baths. Standard started to look tiny and the 125ml wine glass became rare enough to appear on Antiques Roadshow. Suddenly, almost everywhere you went, “small” had become 175ml, “large” 250ml which means you’ve drunk two thirds of a bottle if you have just a couple of drinks. Hic. Now at the Daffodil you can taste your way around the World without getting ‘bombed’. Mark finally comments,’ this has been a £20K investment for us. It simply means us being able to offer our customers these wines by the glass, the carafe or bottle… and in a condition that’s second to none’. So if you want to try some incredible wines at their very best without bumping into the wall or a bad tempered submariner, then head to The Daffodil Restaurant for a bit of sip, sip hooray! Restaurant Review
KIBOU, Cheltenham By Food Writer Shelle Duffin
My love for sushi has grown stronger over the past nine months, and this is before I’ve even had the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong ambition to visit its native country of Japan. All gratitude and praise for influencing my palate, which includes a new admiration for warm sake (Japanese wine) and an improved skill in mastering the art of using chopsticks, goes to Emma Graveney and her team at Kibou in Cheltenham. Having opened their doors last August with very little advertising, word of this fabulous restaurant soon got out, and they have taken the town’s dining scene by storm ever since. Kibou has become one of the most talked about restaurants in the area, reflecting the recognition they have rightly received for the quality of food and the high standard of service that they offer to customers. I first walked through their doors and sampled the exciting menu on their first week of opening, and I’m pleased to report that Kibou’s consistency to produce exquisite plates of food, using only the freshest of ingredients, has never faltered. With an impressive selection of dishes featuring all the classics such as nigiri, hosomaki and the popular ISO roll, Head Chef Yu Wang has used his knowledge and passion for Japanese cuisine to create his own flavoursome combinations. For those of you who are new to sushi, Kibou is the place to go. With hand-drawn illustrations representing each type of sushi positioned above the open-plan kitchen, as well as recommendations from the friendly, knowledgeable staff, you will encounter an experience that you won’t forget in a hurry. With a warm plum sake in hand - my new poison of choice with a deep, sweet flavour that shares a resemblance to sloe gin - we tucked into the ultimate sushi
experience. The starters began with prawn tempura, soft shell crab, ebi stak (a fragrant Japanese version of prawn toast), and pork gyozas – delightful little dumplings filled with succulent pork and infused with vibrant Asian flavours. From the specials board, other luxurious indulgences include monkfish tempura with a coriander dressing, and if you’re feeling somewhat adventurous, there’s an offering of octopus on there too – both of which are definitely worth a look in. Following a gratifying feeling of satisfaction and having politely fought over the last pork gyoza, we moved onto the main course - and at Kibou you’re definitely not short of exciting combinations to choose from. The Chef ’s selection of sashimi is a dish of refined beauty, which really sums up Kibou as a whole. Featuring tuna, salmon, scallop, prawn, crab, kisu (a Japanese white fish), and ikura (salmon roe), this is every inch a seafood lover’s dream. For meat lovers, the sirloin steak teriyaki will bring a smile to your face with its authentic presence alone. Cooked to personal preference (although I recommend you ask for it rare) and infused with coriander, ginger, chilli and lime, this dish gives an enjoyable insight into the flavours of Japanese cuisine. Being a fan of Kibou’s prawn tempura, the ebi katsu roll on the specials menu which features this succulent favourite wrapped in sushi rice and topped with tuna and tobiko (flying fish roe) sounded too good to resist and having polished off the plate with little intention of sharing, I can only recommend that you do the same. I find
the menu here is reasonably priced, with starters ranging from £2.90 to £7.50, and mains beginning at £3.20 and finishing at £15.00 – and matched against the quality of each dish, you certainly get what you pay for. Notorious for having eyes bigger than my stomach and with a menu full of affordable allurement, Kibou is the only place where I deem my tendency to order the entire left side of the menu acceptable. No judgment is passed, and if there is ever an occasion where there might be leftovers, the lovely staff are always on hand to box them up so you can relive the experience the very next day. With good food and excellent service, the only thing left to address is the atmosphere. Kibou only sits a few dozen covers and may not be big in size, however this is no reflection of the atmosphere you’ll find here. The dimmed lights and flickering candles create a sense of intimacy, but with the likes of Paulo Nutini, Beyonce and even some good old jazz music subtly playing in the background, there is a real positive ambiance as diners relish in the ultimate experience given at Kibou. BORDEAUX’S 2013 VINTAGE Nick Stephens tells us all about his recent trip to Bordeaux Every year Bordeaux goes into a frenzy when thousands of the world’s wine critics, merchants and journalists descend to taste the recent vintage from the barrel. It’s known at En Primeur (or sometimes Wine Futures). In good times, and if it is a good year, wine collectors and investors will speculate on the vintage buying the wine from merchants in the hope that it will accumulate in value before its released in bottle. I attend the En Primeur tastings each year and report back to my customers and followers. I taste my way through hundreds of wines and travel the length and breadth of Bordeaux. It’s exciting, exhausting and fast paced but gives me an invaluable insight as to the quality of the wine. This year I tasted the current vintage on offer, the 2013. The 2013 Bordeaux Dry White wines and Sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac are exceptional. This will be a fantastic vintage to buy if you enjoy your whites. I could hardly fault any wines from Sauternes and Barsac – the majority contained all the characteristics of the terroir and the grapes with all the fruit and honeyed sweetness of true Sweet wines. These AOCs are also producing some very good Dry Whites as well as the more traditional Sweet wines and S de Suduiraut (from Sauternes Chateau Suduiraut) is a good example. Other excellent Dry Whites from the Pessac Leognan and Graves AOCs are: Domaine de Chevalier Chateau Pape Clement Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Chateau Haut Brion
However 2013 was a difficult year for the winemakers with severe weather, reduced
yields, mildew and growing problems. This was reflected in the Red wines which lacked colour, are thinner, brighter and less complex than normal. Centuries ago Bordelaise producers would have used wines from the Rhone or even Spain to improve the blend but this is no longer permitted. Nowadays in poor vintages wine makers are allowed to add up to 15% of wine from a Reserve vintage (Volume Complémentaire Individuel, VCI for short) from a good year that has been put aside to the afflicted blend. It’s known as the 85/15 Rule. It is a particularly useful technique should a producer have reduced yields and needs to increase the quality. The VCI wine cannot be sold as it is and can only be kept for a limited number of years. Perhaps some estates used this method this year and others didn’t. Those who did would have benefitted. 2013 wines will drink a lot younger and is definitely not a speculators vintage. It is a unique vintage as there is no previous vintage to compare it against. Should the growing conditions had prevailed during 201, 20 years ago a vintage would not have been made. It is only with the application of technology and wine expertise that Châteaux have produced a wine from last year’s crop. If you prefer
deep fruity complex Red wines then I’d recommend buying back vintages of Bordeaux wines such as 2008 instead of 2013. The quality is far superior and they are being offered at very reasonable prices. There are some notable exceptions. I believe true value for the true Bordeaux drinker, will be from the lesser known estates at Cru Bourgeois level. Having tasted numerous wines at the Cru Bourgeois tasting (which presented over 240 wines) there were wines there which are better than those made by the top Grand Cru Classé (GCC). Cru Bourgeois wines are made by artisan chateaux with great history and offer some glorious undiscovered gems. The biggest problem that I feel will affect the 2013 vintage will be the price tag the chateaux put on their wine. Which is why, if you want to buy, you will really have to trust your wine merchant to be honest with you. Fitness
What is fitness? We meet Lucy Denver, our new fitness writer, who talks us through two key things in life: fitness and food For my first official article for Cotswold Style, I’ve decided against bombarding you with my favourite products: sumptuous sportswear, straightforward supplements and simple snacks that won’t send your blood sugar through the roof. Trust me, you will hear about all of these things (they’re too fabulous to keep secret) but I want to start with something far more basic than that. Scene-setting, if you will. I want to start by finding out what the term ‘fitness’ means to you. ‘Fitness’ never really used to register on my radar. A shocking claim for any fitness professional to make, perhaps. What I mean is that I was so obsessed by the way my body looked and the number on the scales that exercise was a means to an end; certainly not something to be enjoyed or a way to improve my health. I ran, I cycled, I climbed, but I didn’t look after my body. I wanted it to behave (fit into the right size of jeans, look great in a bikini) but I was trying to achieve that by denying my body what it really needed. For much of this time I wasn’t very happy, and neither was my body. Then I wised up. The saying ‘until you love yourself no one else can love you’ applies to the way you treat your body too. To do this often requires a big change in the way you view yourself, swapping negative thoughts for positive ones; and a fundamental shift to understanding that exercising and eating healthily is not a chore, or a punishment, but proof that you love your body enough to want to look after it. This, to me, is fitness: both of the
“
“There is absolutely no point slogging through a 5 mile run every couple of days if you dread it and feel terrible afterwards.”

body and of the mind. The first trick is to find an exercise you enjoy. There is absolutely no point slogging through a 5 mile run every couple of days if you dread it and feel terrible afterwards. Equally if running is your bag then you’re in luck: it’s free, you can do it at anytime, and that view is one hell of a reward for reaching the top of Leckhampton Hill. My personal favourite is CrossFit, as my Twitter followers already know. It’s varied, it’s dynamic, it completely wears you out and you feel so proud of yourself for making it through each session. There’s an abundance of CrossFit boxes in the Cotswolds so give one of them a go. Whatever you choose, start slowly and smile – exercise should leave you feeling fantastic, even if you hate it at the time! Onto food. Oh, food. So many of us, men and women, have a bad relationship with food. For real,
honest-to-goodness fitness, you have to eat real, honest-to-goodness food. Exercise will give you about 20% of the results but if you’re subsisting on carrot sticks or gorging on takeaway pizza, ultimately you are not going to attain a good level of fitness. That most common of questions, “How do I get rid of this belly fat?”, is easily answered: it’s all down to diet. Eating is not only an essential part of life, it’s vital to support an exercise routine of any kind. We are finally getting to the stage where it’s no longer cool to boast about how little one has eaten. Women are taking pride in eating proper food, probably because we are wising up to the fact that inducing the body’s starvation response leads to fat storage, physical tiredness and occasionally passing out. Attractive? I think not. Give me bacon and eggs over half a grapefruit any day! That’s what fitness means to me. Tweet me @denvertronix or vist my Facebook page to get in touch: Lucy Denver Coaching

Drop a dress size through exercising! Change the way you think about losing weight, tone up and lose the fat without dieting, says Jodie Molyneux Dieting may be a short-term fix to dropping a dress size, but in the longterm they don’t work because they are unsustainable. When a diet is then abandoned you are left feeling like a failure. Instead, why not drop a dress size simply by exercising? It’s time to think differently about the way you lose weight. It’s time to introduce an exercise plan into your lifestyle that you can realistically stick to; one that burns calories and targets problem areas. You need to MAKE TIME to tone up and lose fat without embarking on any extreme diets. Like the sound of that? The best bit is you only need a minimum of two training sessions per week in order for you to see results. This will ensure that improvements are maintained. Do note that training seven days per week will not help you to achieve
your goals seven times as fast. Rest is key in any training programme as it allows time for your body to recover. A minimum of one day’s rest between sessions is necessary to facilitate recovery. If you don’t schedule rest days into your plan, fatigue and over-training can occur, resulting in reduced gains because the body is still tired from the previous session. Try a mixture of the following: Stomach exercises
For your upper stomach muscles: Sit-ups and crunches Lower stomach muscles: V-sits and leg extensions
Build up to completing three sets of 12 repetitions, with a 60 second recovery between sets.
Obliques Oblique crunches (side crunches) on a stability ball. Build up to completing three sets of 12 repetitions, with a 60 second recovery between sets.
Thighs and bum exercises Any aerobic activity including: cycling, walking, jogging, running, rowing and so on, which involves using the legs. Aim to build up to completing three, 20 minute sessions each week.
Triceps Any triceps exercise will do the trick. Tricep dips, Tricep extensions, Tricep kickbacks. Build up to completing three sets of 12 repetitions, with a 60 second recovery between sets. Core exercises Core exercises strengthen your inner postural muscles. These muscles act like a girdle and stabilise your body during movement. A weak core can leave you susceptible to poor posture and lower back pain so it’s important to include core exercises in your training plan. Good core exercises include: The plank, sitting on a stability ball and stability ball floor bridge.Build up to holding each exercise for 60 seconds.
By following this plan as part of your new lifestyle, you will soon notice your body becoming noticeably leaner and firmer without enduring any crash diets. Go on, give it a go. Walk a Mile in My Shoes Step out in Cheltenham, wearing someone else’s shoes, to show your support for local unpaid carers. It’s time to sign up for ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ 2014, says Sarah Speakman Ever fancied stepping into a pair of goldmedal-winning trainers or a teeny pair of Jimmy Choos, once worn by someone fabulous? If so, read on! It’s that time of year again, when Carers Gloucestershire invite us all to Walk a Mile in My Shoes. Not my shoes, obviously, but just someone else’s; in this case, one of the 63,000 unpaid, family carers across Gloucestershire. The idea is that we all swap shoes for a one-mile walk around Pittville Park on Saturday 14th June, 2014, to get an idea what it’s really like stepping into someone else’s shoes. Why? To try and understand what it must be like to be a carer, looking after someone who couldn’t manage without that help. For you and me, caring for someone probably means looking after the children or making the occasional cup of hot lemon and honey for an ailing husband; but for tens of thousands of Gloucestershire people, just like you and me, caring is a way of life. Every day in Gloucestershire, a staggering 25 people take on a caring role, looking after someone who otherwise wouldn’t manage. If you think about it, we probably all know someone who’s a carer, many of whom have to juggle work and care. And when you think of that someone, who is that unpaid carer, have you ever thought what it must be like? More people than ever before are turning to ‘Carers Gloucestershire’ for help, whose aim is to make sure no-one has to face caring alone. And it’s not just the elderly; many people find themselves caring for a loved one, unexpectedly, much earlier in life. Of course, when we pledge our love for one another, it’s in sickness and in health; when we take the big step and have children, we love and care for them unconditionally. So of course, most of us will be more than willing to step up to the carers’ role; but it’s tough, really tough, and nothing can prepare you for how you’ll feel, behave or cope with the huge challenges caring presents.
This year’s, Walk a Mile in My Shoes, will be the biggest carer awareness event in the South West. The one-mile stroll will host people from across Gloucestershire, swapping footwear with their sons, daughters, husbands, friends, neighbours or even a complete stranger, to show support for local unpaid carers. And wow, we’ve got some shoes for you! Carers Gloucestershire have already snapped up some very exciting pairs, with shoes donated by Sir Steve Redgrave, Dr Dawn Harper and Gloucester Rugby. And what’s more, all of the shoes could be yours as they’re to be sold-off after the walk on the 14th June in Cheltenham’s biggest ever second-hand shoe sale, at Pittville Park! So what should you do next? Well, if you have any fabulous shoes, or know someone else who’d like to donate a pair, please get in touch with Carers Gloucestershire. And if you’d like to take part in this unique event, please register, for just £10, to help this local charity reach their £10,000 fundraising target, to raise funds for their ‘Time out for Carers’ service’. This project helps unpaid family carers, who wouldn’t normally get a break from their responsibilities, take a much needed holiday or short break. It enables financially-disadvantaged people to have some well-earned and desperately needed time off. Tim Poole, Chief Executive of Carers Gloucestershire said: “For many carers, their caring role has a real impact on their
own health and wellbeing. A short break can often be the one thing that stands between them and a complete breakdown. By joining us and stepping out at Pittville Park, you will be helping to make a real difference to the lives of unpaid carers across Gloucestershire.” Be one of the first 100 people to sign up and you will be entered into a draw to win a pair of Dr Dawn Harper’s killer heels! “We want as many people as possible to walk the mile”, Mr Poole continued, “to show that Gloucestershire recognises, and appreciates, the efforts and willingness of our unpaid carers.” The walk is part of a larger fun day with a BBQ, a Tea Tent and family activities, Cheltenham Town Football Club’s ‘Speed Shot’, a children’s village, face painting, dancing and music, all of which will celebrate the contribution of Gloucestershire’s 63,000 unpaid family carers. Registration for walk a mile in my shoes is £10.00, which includes your ‘Walk a mile in my Shoes 2014’ t-shirt and goody bag, and you can now sign up online at www.carersgloucestershire.org.uk or call their fundraising team on 01452 386283 if you can help out with donating some fabulous shoes. Dr Mark Porter MBE said: “Carers Gloucestershire is the very definition of a worthy cause. Carers offer an invaluable service which, while very much appreciated by those they look after, is all too often overlooked by the rest of us.” COTSWOLD STYLE MAY 2014 137

CALL MY BLUFF... Eric Barton gets to grips with the Land Rover Freelander TD4 XS 2 At TH White in Royal Wootton Basset they know a thing or two about providing the right machinery to do the job. It’s a long tradition going back over twenty nine years. In fact T H White Land Rover and Fiat Group Brand Centre are part of the T H White group of businesses that has traded in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Berkshire since 1832. So it’s no surprise that a dealership that’s well entrenched in the rural and local town communities have a good array of suitable vehicles to the job they were intended for. I just hate the pointless 4 x 4’s that aren’t fit for purpose. I won’t name names but we all know who they are. It’s a desperate scene of broken axles and drive shafts. Not so of course with the mighty and elegant Freelander. Land Rover as we all know have a long and sustainable legacy in the off road market. I climbed behind the wheel of the TD4 XS to trundle around the lanes and farm tracks around Royal Wootton Bassett and indeed all the way back to Cheltenham to find out that the Freelander has lost none of its original intention or allure. The Freelander's bluff no-nonsense looks and spacious interior has an appeal that’s still drawing a crowd. And quite rightly so. The interior is where the real improvements have been made. The basic dashboard layout is still there, with its upright centre column that houses all the major switchgear. However, where there was an ugly collection of buttons
and a scattering of retro green backlit displays to accompany them, there is now a streamlined array of rotary dials and less buttons. Much cleaner and more tactile. Even the bulky Terrain Response rotary dial has been lost in favour of some minimalist switches in front of the gearlever. The colour touch-screen is standard from mid-range XS models upwards and becomes easier to se with a little practice. In this case familiarity doesn’t breed contempt. Having the one-touch buttons beneath the screen to take you straight to a chosen main function is really nifty. This upgrade has also endowed it with one of the most appealing interiors in the class. And that’s no mean feat. A new colour screen also sits between the speedo and rev counter, making the Freelander's interior feel much more modern. The huge expanse of glass offers great visibility and provides a relaxing place to cover many miles. On the outside the addition of new LED headlights are subtle, as are the other styling touches. The driving experience in the Freelander is much the same as it was. Don’t get me wrong that’s no bad thing and the cabin is now a fairly serene place to be at lower speeds. There have been no changes to the suspension, so the Freelander gobbles up rutted surfaces and potholes better than most cars in this sector. The handling is slightly ponderous, but lets remember that’s this isn’t a track car. The Freelander does
however remain well controlled and manageable, even at higher speeds and in tight corners. The engines were refreshed back in 2011 and remain unaltered, which means a 2.2-litre diesel with 148bhp or 188bhp is the only option. The lower-powered engine is available with two- or fourwheel drive and badged eD4 and TD4 respectively. Both variants get a six-speed manual gearbox. This means the headline figures remain the same, with the greenest (at 158g/km and 47.1mpg) and the cheapest Freelander 2 eD4 kicking the range off at £23,700. The variable four-wheel drive system, Terrain Response, has been upgraded and is now standard on all four-wheel drive models. There’s no bluff with the Freelander. It’s built for purpose and in an often ugly world of 4x4’s but still holds its head up high in terms of looks. The mid-range £32,200 XS model with 148bhp and four-wheel drive will get you the must have interior features and do go for the 17-inch alloys which will deliver the best ride experience. So my bluff was called. Make no bones about it the Freelander is still top dog. For more information and to book a test www.thwhite.swindon.landrover.co.uk Tel 01793 222017

The Atlantic Polo Team wins fours in Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge
Tiny Dancer braces the Ocean Polo players ditch mallets for ores to row The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in the World’s Number One Ocean Endurance Race WORDS BY ANNABEL BOX
Four professional polo players, the captain Bobby Dundas, Henry Brett (former captain of England), James Glasson and Fergus Scholes from The Atlantic Polo Team took it within themselves to compete their toughest challenge ever to raise money for three charities. The Brook, Hilton on the Community Foundation and Right to Play. Their boat ‘Tiny Dancer', set off on the 2nd December from San Sebastian de La Gomera, Spain to Antigua. They managed to row the three thousand miles in forty eight days and seven minutes on board a seven by two meter craft. Coming second out of sixteen teams and winning their division. These polo players are used to the high life, jetting across the world, playing and partying with the very wealthy. Rowing twenty-four hours nonstop in two hours shifts was completely out of their comfort zone. So what on earth made them swop their mallets for ores? This is one question I had for Cotswold based Bobby Dundas, the one with the testing idea, who plays at both Cirencester Park and The Beaufort. 146 MAY 2014 COTSWOLD STYLE
Bobby wanted to achieve a challenging goal doing something out of the ordinary. Despite having volunteered with several charity projects in the world before, everyone still thought he was crazy as he had no experience in rowing; but that didn’t stop him asking three other team mate’s to join him. The other competing rower’s didn’t take these polo boys too seriously either, especially the team of ex-military men, Row2Recovery who came in third and with only five limbs between them, supported by their friend Prince Harry. These two teams had trained from the same base in Surrey for months before the start with the polo boys training from scratch, assisted by specialists for strength and conditioning. The exmilitary guys would give the players a lot of light banter about being born with silver spoons in their mouths, joking they had no place to be rowing the Atlantic, doubting they would even make the start line. Nobody did. This is what the players had in the back of their minds when rowing, they needed to prove everybody wrong and they did. Polo players are competitive after all!
The players eventually arrived into Antigua to huge cheers from their friends and families. Looking like a crew of castaways, covered in blisters, sweat, wearing full beards and a stone lighter. Relieved to be on dry land after battling forty feet waves, during which two men had gone overboard. Suffering sickness and at one stage they had no choice but to hibernate in their cramped cabins for three days due to a vast mid Atlantic storm which lost them valuable time. Fortunately they were the only boat competing not to capsize. To top it off their automatic water pump, used for distilling salt water, had packed up which meant in their rest period the lads had to manually pump around 500 pumps to gain a litre of drinking water. More people have climbed Mount Everest than rowed the Atlantic Ocean. These guys are an inspiration. The Atlantic Polo Team and the Row2Recovery team will be holding a charity polo match with Prince Harry playing this coming summer. The date is yet to be fixed. www.atlanticpoloteam.com
