editor’s foreword
We focus on fashion this month, as we move into September and celebrate the long-awaited and exciting launch of Cheltenham Fashion Week. Taking place from September 17th, Festival Director, Sam Bawden, has done a fantastic job of organising the event and tickets are still available to buy. Turn to page 18 to read our exclusive interview with fashion designer George Davies and his interest in Cheltenham’s fashionista fodder. The summer holidays always seem to fly by and it’s hard to believe that it’s time for the children to return to school. Send them on their way with a healthy helping hand from The Nutrition Centre on page 99 as we take a look at back to school health. And if you’re a mother feeling a little fraught after six weeks of keeping the little ones entertained then what better way to reward yourself than with a browse though this month’s fashion pages to pick out your new autumn wardrobe. House of Fraser in Cirencester provides the perfect solution to a capsule winter wardrobe from page 70. From this month, we welcome our new Racing Correspondent, Cathryn Fry, and look forward to her guiding us through all things equestrian as we gallop towards the events ahead of us. And sticking with a sporting theme, Gloucester Rugby Club’s new interim MD, Chris Ferguson, talks to us on page 145. I hope that you enjoy this month’s issue as we welcome a new season and look forward to a fabulous autumn in the Cotswolds. FAMILY
!HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2012 Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th September The year soon goes round and already it’s nearly time for Heritage Open days again. Lots of interesting buildings will be open in Gloucestershire towns. Buildings which open on Heritage Days are ones which are usually closed for the rest of the year – or else buildings which normally charge a fee to go in. On Heritage Days they’re absolutely free, and a trip round a few in your area will make a wonderful and unusual day out for all the family. Different buildings are open at different times on the four days, so you need to find out what’s going on in your area – or the town you plan to visit. You can do this on www.heritageopendays.org.uk, or local websites such as: www.cheltenhamcivicsociety.org.uk/ chods; or you can get hold of a leaflet from your local tourist office. Many properties will be open in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Cirencester, Stroud, to name but a few. In Cheltenham a number of private homes will also be available for visiting: these are homes which have installed some ecological improvements in the past year, so you can see the way private house development is likely to be going in the future. Also in both Cheltenham and Gloucester there will be a series of themed guided walks to show
off interesting aspects of town or city centres – all free naturally. Do note the dates and keep them free to get involved. It’s a once-a-year opportunity. You’ll love it! ART IN THE COTSWOLDS Wednesday 19th - Tuesday 25th September Come and browse the broad selection of paintings, pottery, stained glass, jewellery, textiles... all by local artists in this beautiful Cotswold village. ST EDWARD’S PUPILS BUILD THEIR OWN CLASSICAL GUITARS
David Cullimore, Chris Gale and Dan Lewis, Sixth Form students at St Edward’s School, together with three members of the teaching staff used their physics and engineering knowledge to build six perfect classical guitars which were played by world renowned classical guitarist’s, the Katona Twins, at a recent concert at Pittville Pump. Christopher Bate, Physics Teacher, came up with the idea last summer after hearing the Katona Twins in a concert and asking them if they would play on guitars that the school would build. They were very interested and agreed. The project, which took a year to complete, culminated in a marvellous performance at the Pump rooms where the Katona Twins played each guitar in turn. They were delighted with the quality of the instruments and played tribute to the pupils and staff. Christopher Bate says, “We are very fortunate at St Edward’s because our timetable is flexible enough to incorporate creative projects, which go way beyond a standard academic curriculum. Building high quality, precision instruments, such as these guitars, can be a life-changing moment. I am so proud of the dedication and commitment of everyone who took part.” For further details about St Edward’s School please contact: a.naylor@stedwards.co.uk

September just got
As Cheltenham Fashion Week gets set to launch on 17th September, we talk to fashion designer George Davies about his collaboration with the fantastic event
We’re very excited about the launch of Cheltenham Fashion Week, what are you most looking forward to? I’m very excited to be part of this celebration and particularly seeing the work that the various students have produced covering the 7–11, 11–16 and 16 plus age categories.
Q A
How have you been involved with the event to date? I have had a number of meetings with the various organisers, made a number of suggestions and visited Gloucestershire College, Cheltenham Campus to view the area where the event for the students will take place and I was particularly impressed with the giant stiletto shoe and took part in a fashion shoot with the team involved.
Q A
Did you always know that fashion was the industry you wanted to excel in? I understand that dentistry was once an option? After leaving Birmingham University Dental School prematurely I joined Littlewoods in Liverpool and started my fashion career as a trainee in fashion. I have much to thank Littlewoods for, the training they have me in mills, pattern cutting, manufacturing and of course in the retail stores.
Q A
You are now a recognisable household name, often purely from your Christian name! What was your big break? The biggest break was being approached by Hepworth Ltd who wanted to diversify out of menswear into womenswear. They asked me to carry out market research, develop a concept and put

a team together to run it and to come up with a name that had great appeal, that was the start of next, or Next as it is now known!
What does living in the Cotswolds mean to you? I love the space; I love the stonework, which was once described to me as having the sun trapped in it. I love the villages. I think the Cotswold Council have done a tremendous job in ensuring that any development is in line with the Cotswolds great history and of course above everything else, the people!
Q A
What does Cheltenham Fashion Week mean to you? For the past 15 years I have been involved in all forms of education: • Chitra Lane – a school in Sri Lanka for special needs children • Mvumi School Trust – a school in Tanzania formed to give better education needs to the local children • Soham of Kids – a school in Hyderabad set up to provide education to children from underprivileged backgrounds • Heriot Watt MA Course – Working with Heriot Watt University sponsoring the George Davies Centre of Excellence
Q A
SEPTEMBER 2012
• Birmingham University – helping under privileged students gain access to degree courses.
And to be involved with a group of people who are passionate about supporting young and older students is a fantastic thrill.
What advice would you give to a budding young designer? The most important thing about design is being inventive, creative, knowing your fabrics, understanding the manufacturing process but above all understanding your market i.e. your potential customers, so therefore, you have to be driven and focussed on all these aspects, as well as understanding the products that are successfully received by the public you have to analyse and understand those products that disappoint.
Q A
Which rising designers do you think we should look out for? Hopefully I’ll be able to give you the answer to this after I’ve seen the Fashion Shows on 18th September at Gloucestershire College, Cheltenham Campus, Princess Elizabeth Way, Cheltenham GL51 7SJ. CS

Hall Road Cheltenham Setting the scene: An extended and improved Victorian semi-detached family home with generous, light and bright accommodation. The Plot at Sydenham Villas Road Cheltenham Setting the scene: A rare opportunity to acquire a building plot with planning permission to build a contemporary three bedroom home in a highly desirable location close to the centre of Cheltenham. Why we love it: As building land becomes more valuable and harder to find, a buyers dream of building their own home rarely comes to pass. Sometimes the land is available in a location that is not the desired one or the planning consent does not match the image of the home they wish to build. It is for this reason that we are so pleased to be able to offer for sale a building plot in a highly desirable central Cheltenham location. The Asters of Autumn with Camilla Bassett-Smith
Gloucestershire Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has a Chelsea Gold Medal and was part of the BBC production team for BBC Gardeners’ World. She has just completed the role of horticultural consultant on BBC programme ‘The Flowerpot Gang’ on our screens until MidSeptember. As autumn arrives, she turns to all things aster...
SEPTEMBER 2012
The 29th September is known as Michaelmas, the feast of St Michael the Archangel, a date which falls near to the equinox and rings in autumn and darker days with fading colour. Luckily just as many border friends are settling down for a long rest, the asters or ‘Michaelmas daisies’ come to our rescue and ensure our borders are lightened and cheered as the days draw in. These herbaceous perennials are members of the Asteracea family, and nearly all of our favoured cultivars in this country are related to native North American species. The obvious birth flower for September, legend says that Astraea, the goddess of innocence, left earth for heaven to live as the constellation Virgo. When she took pity on some lost earthlings below, she created starlight to guide them. Her tears of pity landed on the earth and the starlike aster flower was born. The literal meaning for aster in Latin is star, and is still rooted in many words in use today: asterisk (meaning little star) and disaster (something that was ‘ill-starred’). Historically, you may have heard of
the ‘Aster revolution’. This was a name given to the Hungarian revolution of 1918 when protestors in Budapest wore aster flowers as they seized public buildings contributing to the proclamation of the Hungarian Democratic Republic. Perhaps the largest collection of asters in the world is only a stone’s throw away from us at The Picton Garden in Colwall, Malvern. The Picton family have continued the work of breeder Ernest Ballard who in the early 20th Century was one of the first to concentrate on breeding asters and whose fields of Michaelmas daises were known throughout the world! A visit to The Picton Garden today will reward you with over 400 varieties and it is said that the asters of Colwall were apparently featured on the first ever gardening television programme to be transmitted in colour! Popular throughout the early and mid 20th Century, these autumn daisies sadly saw a decline in interest in the 1970s. One wonders whether the susceptibility to mildew was partly responsible and for many, a problem too far. The most popular group of asters, the Aster novibelgii group, are very numerous in cultivars, but sadly always have been prone to mildew. A wise choice is to opt for the New England asters (Aster novaeangliae) which are mildew resistant. Don’t rule out novi-belgii hybrids though, still well worth growing as so much choice and with good air supply around the plants this should discourage mildew. (An open and sunny position is advisable for all Michaelmas daisies). In Chinese medicine, Aster tataricus is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in use. Expect it to feature in treatment for a bad cough or relief of asthma. Asters are in fact in the same family as the celebrated cold preventing echinacea which we featured in last month’s issue. In ancient medicine, aster is also listed in the treatment of rheumatic pains. So as the leaves begin to turn and the boutiques in Cheltenham fill with the autumnal colours of brown, green and orange, our borders will be a far more pastel affair with the purples, whites, pinks and blues of the asters of autumn. The fairest month with Jon Hodder
Head Gardener at Sudeley Castle, Jon Hodder, comments on the approach to autumn Photograph Jennie Rainsford September, perhaps the fairest month: fully foliaged and with only a hint of autumn in the cool of the morning dampness. The temperatures are usually exactly that: temperate. The sun still high enough to convince us that summer may never end; the days still long enough to enjoy a bit of gardening in the evening. It’s a beautiful month. No longer the burning heat of summer, nor yet autumn’s splendour. At its very best, September has no equal. Usually. This year, we can but hope that the weather will lead us into an Indian summer. Small recompense for a stolen summer of washed out festivals, damp holidays and wind battered gardens. The cool, damp weather has made this year almost perfect for establishing new plants. As we move towards autumn, now can be a good time to think about what plants you would like to move and divide and where to plant new ones. This month can be for consideration, with October and November, for planting. The theory is that the ground usually has some residual heat in it and that the plants will have all of the winter (and its rainfall) to slowly establish themselves, ready for the rigours of spring. Now can be a good time to look at your garden and consider if there are any plants that need removing. I am sure that we have all spent unnecessary amounts of time nursing along a plant that clearly has no intention of performing. Dig it out, make the ground up with some wellrotted manure and find something that will grow. Life really is too short for that sort of self-inflicted heartache. Perhaps consider swapping plants with friends or neighbours. Make sure that SEPTEMBER 2012
newcomers to the garden don't bring any unwanted guests. It wouldn't be the first time that ground elder or bindweed had been unwittingly introduced. If you have any doubts, simply remove the plant from its pot and gently wash the soil from its roots. Any unwanted roots should then become apparent. With the schools returned, the gardens at Sudeley are quiet once again with the exception of the high-pitched wail of our hedge cutters. The necessary task of the annual trim is in full flow. This may be that last year that we use petrol hedge-cutters on our Yew hedges, as we investigate more environmentally friendly ways of working. We are currently looking into batteryoperated equipment. This is a better option all round. Quieter and more comfortable for the user: easier on the ear of our visitors. If you are thinking of lawn repair, there are two months that are our favourites: April and September. The warm ground and fair temperatures will see seed strike well and still have time to make good roots before the winter. Keep an eye on the weather and water
when the soil starts to look dry. Queen Katherine Parr looms large in the parade of historical figures associated with the Sudeley Castle. She lived and died here. On the 9th September there will be a reenactment of her funeral, including people in historic costume and a service in St Mary’s chapel. There are services in the morning and afternoon, both of which are ticketed. Further information from the website. Enjoy the late summer weather; begin to make ready for the rigours of winter and if you have enough apples, make cider. CS Check the website for full details of Queen Katherine Parr Quincentenary Festival which includes Tudor Family Fun Days, literary and historical talks and events, /www.sudeleycastle.co.uk/ or call 01242 602308. We head to the thriving town of Cirencester this month and bring you new season fashion from the town’s House of Fraser store, shot on location at The Fleece... Cirencester is a picturesque market town situated in the Cotswolds, and is often referred to as “Capital of the Cotswolds” due to its excellent location and amenities. Steeped in history, it was one of the most important towns in Roman Britain, after London and was a wealthy market town during the Tudor period, when it was famed for its wool merchants. A typical Cotswold town with many buildings made from the famous Cotswold Stone, Cirencester attracts thousands of tourists every year. Set in the heart of the Cotswolds, its central location makes it an ideal place to stay in order to view other Cotswold villages, such as; Bourton-on-the-

water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Burford. It also has great transport connections, close to Kemble Station and frequent bus service to London Victoria. Cirencester is home to Cirencester Park, the family seat of the Earls Of Bathurst. Within the 3000 acre grounds is Cirencester Park Polo Club, said to be one of the prettiest polo grounds in the country and counts Royal Princes William and Harry as members. Cirencester is also home to a wide array of markets which happen every Monday and Friday and include; farmer’s, crafts and antiques. This includes both local and chain shops in a wide array of sectors, it really does have something for everybody, from Swan Yard to the Market Place, where House of Fraser is situated opposite the Corn Hall. The store offers an excellent shopping experience to visitors. Cirencester really has a lot to offer and has earned its title of “Capital of the Cotswolds.”

October sees the launch of a new pop-up shop in Cheltenham’s Montpellier Arcade, here we find out how it can help you…
Montpellier is home to some gorgeous independent businesses and next month it welcomes the launch of Novostrata’s skincare pop-up shop. The shop will open its doors from Friday 5th October to Saturday 27th October and will offer skin hydration tests using the latest state of the art technology. Mini facials and expert advice are also available. Novostrata has been pioneered by Regenerative Medical System (RMS), a leading medical bio-engineering company and it has taken more than 15 years to research and develop its advanced BioCollagen Cosmeceuticals range. This revolutionary anti-aging regeneration skincare system works on three levels. Firstly, it actually rejuvenates the elasticity of individual cells to improve fine lines by stimulating skin cells to produce their own collagen and elastin. Secondly, it creates a new skin layer
similar to human skin on the epidermis with pure atelocollagen to hydrate skin and stop the loss of hyaluronic acid. Finally, the bio-skin layer protects the skin from external stimuli or stress all day long. The result is gorgeously soft, deeply hydrated, more youthfullooking skin. Throughout the month, there will be a wide variety of events and promotions to take advantage of and a visit to the shop comes highly recommended. On Tuesday 23rd October there will be a ‘Skincare in Seconds’ workshop for busy mothers between 11am and 2pm. If you need a faster and more effective beauty regime and are looking for some musthave beauty tricks then head to the shop and the Novostrata team will help you to re-discover your skin with a hydration test and consultation. beauty
Blushes are set to welcome Director Stylist Robert Hicks to their Cheltenham salon this month. Robert has enjoyed a hugely successful career at Trevor Sorbie until now but has taken the decision to move back to his childhood home in Cheltenham following the birth of a new baby daughter. Career highlights for Robert have been styling backstage on the John Galliano show at London Fashion Week, being selected following a presentation to a packed audience by L’Oreal in their national TalentSpotting competition and his exceptional training prowess. Rob’s expertise meant he was responsible for heading up the assistant training at Trevor Sorbie. Robert has long been one of the most popular and requested stylists within Trevor Sorbie and is keen to bring these talents to Blushes. beauty review
If, like me, you find it hard to justify the time to indulge your nails in a muchneeded manicure then this is just the place for you. Until now, I’ve usually got by with a speedy file and polish, normally applied at home just as I’m flying out of the door – it’s always guaranteed to end in a story of smudged and chipped nail varnish by the time I arrive at my next destination. But now help is at hand. The difference that The Nail Lounge offers is that it has a competitive pricing matrix, but also affords the kind of pampering experience that will ensure that you leave feeling like a new woman… and the best bit is that this is able to be achieved within your lunch hour. You’ll find it nestled above Mu Brasserie on Cheltenham’s Regent Street, like an oasis of calm. As I enter, I’m greeted by a friendly member of staff who offers me a complimentary ice cold drink (it’s rare I know, but it was hot on this particular day), a tea or coffee, or I can choose to treat myself to a glass of bubbles instead. The décor has been

carefully considered and is Vintage French splendour, offering a relaxing and chic ambience to today’s busy woman. I opt for a Shellac manicure and make my shade selection from the rainbow of colours available. Guided by the expertise of the nail technician, I take a seat and am talked through what the process will involve and how best to care for my nails. No production line philosophy is in place here. The Nail Lounge offers a room with a view as you are invited to sit back and watch the world go by on the street below. If you fancy a leisurely lunch after, then Mu Brasserie offers a delicious menu of steak and salads and is, rather conveniently, just downstairs. Men are also made to feel at home here with the opportunity to appreciate a file, polish and shine or a manicure.
Although this feels much more opulent, prices start from just £7 for an Express Manicure and £23 for Shellac Gel Nails. Threading and Tailored Brows are also on the menu. For younger fashionistas, mini-manicures start from £10 for those aged 14 or younger and are a fantastic gift idea. I leave feeling completely relaxed and beautified by the expertly applied Shellac. Highly recommended, simply exquisite surroundings and exactly what Cheltenham has been waiting for! Can you explain what you do? I design, plan and style exclusive private and corporate events. With experience in interior design, design and management, I can confidently interpret my client’s ideas. My events reflect both the individuality of my clients and my meticulous attention to detail.
Q A
How can you help our readers? Being an experienced event planner, I can help with any type of event; wedding, large celebration, child’s birthday or even an intimate dinner party. I can plan, help and advise as little or as much as needed. Sometimes it’s nice to have someone to bounce ideas off or to be there to take over at the end, so you can enjoy hosting your party.
Q A
What is the best part of your job? I love weddings and especially a good party! I feel extraordinarily privileged to be part of such a special day and a huge weight of responsibility to get it just right for my client. There is no better feeling than seeing every idea and plan come beautifully to life.
Q A
Q A
Who are your clients?
I have a great and varied client list. I have created exclusive events for large corporate companies and high profile clients. I appreciate the importance of discretion. Usually SEPTEMBER 2012
my clients come through recommendations, sometimes they’re friends of friends and sometimes clients become friends!
What are the most common requests? Every event is different and I try to reflect the personality of my client in the detail to make it unique. Every client wants to make their event the most memorable! The details really do matter and guests should feel they know you a little bit better after they leave your party.
Q A
How does being based in The Cotswolds help you? I’m so lucky to be based in The Cotswolds. The Cotswolds are just so beautifully inspirational. We have so many great venues and experienced suppliers, which makes my job a lot easier!
Q A
What are the best words of wisdom you have ever received? I live by the rules of The Secret, based on the law of attraction. Put positive thoughts and energy out into the world and you will only attract positivity.
Q A
Where do you take your inspiration from? I buy too many magazines and take a lot of photographs. I find inspiration everywhere. I’m also very lucky to be invited to amazing parties, fashion shows and events around the world, which keeps me inspired!
Q A
What are your plans for the future? I’m looking forward to 2013, with more parties and weddings in the diary, lovely clients and exciting plans. I have lots happening and I am extending my business, so watch this space!
Q A
How do you juggle your family life with the business? As a new mum I learned very quickly that you can’t do everything and that sacrifices have to be made. It’s a learning curve – having a good support system of family and friends helps! The key is balance! My daughter Beau is now five and I have just had my son Lyon. I have to keep my priorities straight and my goals clear and so being organised is essential. CS

Top tips for a healthy return to school With the new school year approaching, leading Gloucestershire health and wellbeing pioneers, The Nutrition Centre, offer advice for staying healthy and achieving optimum performance
Just as New Year’s Day on the 1st of January is the appointed time for setting new goals for a healthy year ahead, so the ‘Back to School’ week in early September is an ideal time to put a new set of positive intentions into motion for your child’s health and wellbeing. The Nutrition Centre is eager to advise parents on caring for their children’s health at this crucial time in the school calendar, setting a good precedent to follow for the rest of the year. The first challenge at the start of any new school year is beating the ominous round of bugs that typically spread like wildfire around Gloucestershire schools following the long summer break. Infections increase in September as back at school children all muck in together again, often in closed environments with insufficient ventilation. The various viruses and parasites then spread from children to their families back home and into workplaces, causing havoc.
Helen Galpin, a Director of the Nutrition Centre who runs the family company with her husband David and daughter Clare shares advice for beating the back to school bugs: “We recommend that the key to keeping your child healthy is a strong immune system which can be achieved by maintaining a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, getting a good night’s sleep of 10-11 hours and taking an hour of physical exercise each day. Echinacea is a great preventative medicine for boosting the immune system and radically reducing the chance of infection, and a good multivitamin also really helps to keep sickness at bay. “Regular hand washing is also important,” Helen continues. “And for nits, which tend to be SEPTEMBER 2012
very prevalent this time of year, we recommend a herbal head lice removal kit as a natural remedy.” Illness aside, another important consideration at the start of the school year is keeping the brain healthy and vital for optimum performance in the classroom. Helen Galpin says: “A good balanced diet is crucial to brain health and mental performance in children, while fish oils are fantastic for boosting brain power, memory and performance and can also enhance mood and concentration.” Helen Galpin also stresses the importance of a healthy breakfast for boosting performance: “A nutritious breakfast improves early morning concentration levels, prevents mid morning snacking on sugary foods and really sets your child up for the day. We recommend fresh fruit and healthy organic cereals, porridge oats (good for reducing cholesterol levels) and pancakes,
all of which are high in fibre and protein and an excellent source of energy. Pancakes with nutritious fillings can be quick and easy to prepare as well as delicious. “ Much modern research testifies to the benefits of a healthy breakfast. A recent report by the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) revealing that one in six UK school pupils skip breakfast, concluded: “'Students going without breakfast cannot be at their best for learning during morning lessons and so can be less attentive and a disruption in class.” Helen Galpin recommends that a lunch box should contain plenty of nutrients and foods with minimal levels of sugar and saturated fat. She says: “We recommend starchy foods for energy intake like wholemeal or seeded bread, rice, potatoes and pasta; protein foods like meat, fish, eggs and beans; and plenty of fruit and vegetables or salad. For fillers, instead of chocolate and crisps go for savoury snacks like rice cakes, organic energy bars and oat cakes. And in place of fizzy drinks, fruit juice or an energising Guarana or soya drink. You could also make up a tasty fruit salad - be inventive, encourage your children to try something different. “The healthy changes to your child’s lunchbox will make the world of difference to their health, mood and performance,” Helen continues. “It may take time to adjust to the changes but it’s well worth the effort, so keep trying.” CS

business Lynis Bassett’s passion for education and entrepreneurial spirit motivated her to start her own business which is rapidly emerging into a market leader
Everyone remembers a favourite teacher, whether it be that particularly animated music teacher, the maths professor who helped you crack that seemingly impossible equation , or simply a member of staff you could really confide in. When you experience great teaching, you remember those people for the rest of your life. Lynis Bassett founded Classpeople and is passionate about the education sector and enhancing children’s development with the very best people to inspire and leave a lasting impression on our younger generations. Classpeople, an independent supply teaching agency, run by teachers for teachers, was launched by Lynis back in 2003; having worked as a teacher herself and recognising that children deserved the very best talent available in order to access quality education, something which all children have a legal right to benefit from. Established in Cheltenham but with a client portfolio now extending beyond county boundaries, Classpeople’s reputation as education sector experts in recruitment has resulted in impressive business growth, with offices now in Bristol, Swindon and Birmingham, as well as the head office in, Cheltenham. Classpeople pride themselves on not only supplying the best classroom personnel - which includes nursery school staff, classroom assistants and teachers - but understanding the complexities and the ever evolving structures of the education industry as well the career needs and preferences of teachers themselves. A fact which is reflected by the CV building workshops and Continuing Professional Development Courses that Class People offer to teachers looking to develop and progress in their careers Lynis believes that fitting the right people with the particular ethos and culture of a school is vital, and the consultancy is painstaking in its efforts to SEPTEMBER 2012
A class act! get this right, both for the school and the individual teacher: “The schools themselves have appreciated this enormously, hence the long term relationships that Classpeople have been able to build up with clients, comprising literally hundreds of teaching and learning establishments. Classpeople supplies teachers to 150 primary schools and 50+ early years centres in Gloucestershire, let alone the secondary schools and other organisations on its books, and the client base is expanding all the time.” The success of the business has seen the head office team in Cheltenham move recently from Imperial Square to its smart new open plan offices in Eagle Tower, covering 1,750 square feet and allowing for plenty more expansion and growth over the next few years. While supplying teachers to primary schools is where the business started, expanding quickly into the secondary school market too, the team soon recognised the value they could add in niche sectors, such as Special Education Needs and early years, and the move to
Eagle Tower and larger premises has allowed them to set up desks dedicated to serving clients in each of these additional but specialist areas. Lynis comments: “The move to the new premises marks the 10 year anniversary of the business and the team will be celebrating in style with a champagne and canapé reception in October to welcome staff, both past and present, friends and contacts to the new offices and raise a toast to the success of Classpeople.” Are you a teacher looking for a change in career direction? Why not contact Classpeople who are looking to recruit top quality teachers to join their expanding team and help in the mission to make a positive contribution to the profession and business of education in Britain. SEPTEMBER 2012
I live in a pet free home. It’s not my fault, honestly. I was brought up by a cat loving father and a dog loving mother, so depending on who was having their way most prominently the house was populated by either cats, a dog, and if they ever could get on, both. The current problem is my partner, who had a pet free childhood, has a general dislike for domestic animals and what verges on a real fear of dogs. If an especially large dog approaches us my girlfriend will do everything she can to give it a very wide berth. I have tried to persuade her that animals can bring joy to a household. We had a tropical fish tank bringing colour to our dining room for a few years and there was a short lived, ill fated experience with a hamster. I say ill fated as after a few months the poor creature developed a very odd way of walking. She would raise her leg as high as she could, stretch it forward then make a very deliberate and slow step down. This clearly caused some concern, so a trip to the vet was the obvious step. Unfortunately the vet told us that with small animals such as a hamster there is not much investigation they can do in to any physical problems that may cause such a walk and she feared the problem might be mental. Already at
an advanced age when we adopted her, I’m afraid the vet suggested the inevitable conclusion, and little Ginger the hamster has never been replaced. The issue now is that our two young children have developed a fascination with pets. They have discovered friends’ pets, and love nothing more than dragging us in to a pet supermarket to stare wide eyed at the jumbled furry balls of multiple sleeping hamsters and coo over the cute, floppy eared rabbits. Yet so far, their calls for a furry companion have been met with a hopeful maybe. Hopeful on our behalf that they will quickly forget the request and move on to something else, yet why does it seem that this never comes true, unless you give in and buy them something only for them to go off it ten minutes later? Or is that just my children? So, as we can’t run the risk of a pet being a short term fascination, the stand off continues. I want my children to have the valuable life lessons that the presence of a family pet will help to teach. I also want them to enjoy the pleasure and companionship that a furry member of the family will bring to the home. It is just a case now of persuading the other half, although with odds of three to one I fancy our chances in the near future. CS

ROUNDING THE HORN Max Le Grand aboard a luxury cruise to Antarctica
Edgar, hailed from Nebraska in America. This brusque man from the mid-west had never seen an ocean in his life. I encountered him on Celebrity Cruises good ship ‘Infinity’. He asked, “Waddaya reckon on this boat son?” I had sailed as crew on Great Britain II in the 27,000 mile 1977-78 Whitbread around the world race. We won and I was enrolled into the International Cape Horner’s Association. Over 30 years later, this was my first cruise. So by comparison with the Chay Blyth’s ketch, I was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the liner. “Edgar, it’s hard to believe 2,000 guests and 1,000 crew are on board. I’ve discovered a theatre, cinema, casino, dance floors, lecture auditoriums, a health spa, two swimming pools, shops, bars and restaurants”. He glared at me. “Don’t get to make yourself too much at home son. These pesky vessels sink”. We had assembled in January, midsummer in Argentina, at the port of Buenos Aires. Our ultimate destination, the Antarctic Peninsula. Embarkation upon Infinity appeared to be random. Nevertheless, Celebrity Cruises do have a working system. We wore stickers numbered 1-9. The V.I.P’s had orange labels. Some brashly mounted the stairs, as if the ship belonged to them. More apologetic souls, slunk through the barrier, in fear of an uprising. We heard our number called, a veritable United Nations of 200 foreigners queued to face formalities. We’d been told that Captain Margaritis, was a stickler for punctuality. Upon departure, I read that our floating pleasure palace had a velocity of 24 knots, measured 964 feet alongside with a beam of 106 feet. After two days at sea, we arrived at The Falkland Islands to anchor off Port Stanley. Not since the Argentineans had invaded in 1982, had the kelpers felt so

overwhelmed. I met the Chief Superintendent at the police station. After pleasantries, the officer presented me with a silver plated Royal Falkland Islands Police badge. After a wonderful day at Bluff Cove seeing the penguins, I enjoyed a ‘smoko’- tea and cake, in Hattie’s café. She showed us the wild life museum, before we made the rough ride by Land Rover, over a glutinous peat bog track, back to Stanley. Our voyage continued south to the Drake Strait where the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans converge between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula. We made the 620 mile passage from The Falklands to Elephant Island, where a snow avalanche almost engulfed Infinity. Adventurer Sir Ernest Shackelton, sought refuge on Elephant Island, after his ship was wrecked. The steep, snow covered rock faces looked forbidding. Shackelton landed there with 28 crew. Then, with a handful of men, he set off in a life boat for help. Four months
later he returned aboard a Chilean tug to rescue the remaining group. Every man survived. As we approached Antarctica, our cruise liner meandered through the Gerlache Strait. A dazzling sun illuminated the virgin white scene. Bearing in mind it was mid-summer, just 10F above freezing, many passengers were dolled up in woolly hats, goggles, and heavy body gear, boots and gloves. Now I could imagine how Cheltenham’s adventurer Edward Wilson felt, who with Captain Scott trekked to the South Pole on their tragic one way expedition. Ice ‘growlers’ with seals basking, scudded along the hull as Paradise Bay emerged to port. We had reached our southern most bearing at 64.50S and 62.8E. The Captain informed us, that we were still a minority in the world to visit the region. We spotted a whale surface for a blow. A lonesome albatross glided by, as Infinity edged starboard to drift through the pack ice. Our Captain warned us that a westerly wind of up to 90 mph was blowing over the Drake Strait. It would create swells of 35 foot height. Not a piece of crockery fell off the tables in the Trellis Restaurant at dinner that night. Mind you, attendance for the evening meal was sparse. Many, who felt queasy, had staid in their rooms. As Infinity, trickled around Cape Horn into the Beagle Channel, sunrise brightened the mountains. Ushuaia is the southern most city in the world. Under British occupation in the 1800’s, the settlement became a penal colony, for civil and military prisoners. Today the prison is a museum. Peering into one cell, an effigy depicted an escaped prisoner, breaking back inside, for shelter from the hostile environment. Argentina riled against a British colony within its borders. The Spanish moved in SEPTEMBER 2012

and now the city is a thriving port. Ushuaia’s location on the Ilsa Grande de Tierra del Fuego, is surrounded by Chile. There is a signpost that read, London 8,326 miles and Prudhoe Bay in Alaska is 29,800 miles along a convoluted PanAmerican Highway. During the 730 mile cruise north to Puerto Madryn in Patagonia, our Captain warned of temperatures above 90F as we docked. The parched

scrubland, was first settled by the Welsh over 150 years ago. Our 170 mile drive to the penguin rookery at Punto Tombo, was dust laden. The area harbours the largest Magellan Penguin colony in South America. It looked like a waiter’s convention in Blackpool. I wondered why these proud birds annually homed upon such a hostile climate, to breed among the Llama like Guanacos. We reversed our time pieces by one hour as we approached Uruguay. Montevideo’s port was already host to three large cruise ships. While many guests explored the port city, I took the two hour drive to Colonia del Sacramento. The small fortress town faces over the Rio de la Plata. Today, this beautiful tree lined medieval city, still maintains cobbled streets that wreck car suspensions. Part of the charm, are the vintage motors and an old tram that are parked where they broke down years ago. Weeds and flowers emanate through the car windows. Locals are a pot-puree of Portuguese and Spanish. They sat outside their houses, supping El Mate,
an herbal drink drawn from the gourd, through a communal metal straw. The finicky British politely blanched at sipping from the same cup. That night, we departed Montevideo for Buenos Aires. Before joining the scrum at dawn, to catch transport to airports and hotels, I encountered Edgar and asked if he had enjoyed the voyage? Apparently, the library had been his second domicile. He had eaten and drank well; approved of his spacious state room and service, and he had taken a few Tango lessons. Our Nebraskan had also ventured forth into Ushuaia and Montevideo. The 65 nations aboard Infinity had been far from mutinous. He was glad to have survived a wondrous experience. Edgar admitted, that ocean cruising must have improved considerably since the ‘Titanic’ disaster, one hundred years ago. Fast paced city life, idyllic beaches and exquisite cuisine. Rebecca Leech, Trade and Retail Marketing Coordinator at Kuoni, travels to Vietnam to see what the hype is about
Bleary eyed but excited as we landed in Saigon, we were eager to explore this city’s rich culture and history and experience the exquisite culinary delights. Heading into the hot and humid centre to explore and see some of the sites, we began at the Reunification Palace; the building where the Vietnamese war ended on April 30, 1975. Walking through the desolate rooms and corridors with high ceilings and remnants from the war, there is an element of grandeur retained by this eerie building. Moving on from the buzz of Saigon we stayed in the beautiful old fishing town of Hoi An. This UNESCO listed town is charming and especially beautiful at night when all the hanging lanterns are alight and flood the town with a colourful glow. This little town offers so much to do during the day – wander through the winding streets and fabulous shops, visit the tailors for exquisite handmade clothes, cycle to the stunning beaches nearby or take a lesson in traditional Vietnamese cookery. There is also an incredible choice of restaurants along the river offering an
array of Vietnamese cuisine from the South, North and middle of the country. From Hoi An we travelled to the island of Con Son in the Con Dao archipelago which lies off Southern Vietnam and can be reached by a 45-minute flight from Saigon. We stayed at Six Senses Con Dao; this incredibly luxurious escape has been designed in the style of a traditional Vietnamese fishing village and is an ecofriendly contemporary resort. This breathtakingly beautiful island offers fabulous snorkelling in the protected marine reserve with the opportunity to spot the rarely seen dugongs and the sea turtles which come here to nest and lay their eggs. Whether you choose to spend your days experiencing the many activities offered by this fabulous resort or go out exploring the town and visit the prison that was once considered hell on earth for those confined to it during the French and American regimes, Con Son island is idyllic and is the perfect escape for relaxation during your visit to Vietnam. On the last leg of this incredible holiday, we visited Hanoi and travelled to
Halong Bay. The minute I saw Halong Bay come into view I was amazed by this awe-inspiring sight with tall and imposing limestone islets that appear endless. The bay was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and has since been listed as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2011. Cruising through the bay on a traditional junk was amazing and we had the opportunity to meet one of the fishing communities that reside in the bay on boats and floating houses was an incredible experience. There is so much to do in Hanoi that it was hard to fit it all in during such a short space of time but on our last day we visited some of the historical attractions including the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison dubbed ‘Hanoi Hilton’ by the US POWS, Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and the One Pillar Pagoda. Hanoi is a city with a very French feel and throughout there is subtle influences that have remained from the time that was spent here by the French. Vietnam is an incredible country and with so much to see and do still remaining, I will certainly be going back. CS To book a holiday to Vietnam, pop into Kuoni Cheltenham, 50 The Promenade, GL50 1LY or call 01242 261116.

“Reputation is everything”
‘Beyond the threshold of the 1816 Portland Chapel, now lovingly restored to a Day Spa, there’s a multitude of sensory experiences waiting to be enjoyed, and a very enthusiastic Spa team to look after your every need’… this is the welcome blurb that Emma has chosen for her website and it could not be more accurate. Emma has worked hard to establish a business with a fine reputation and serves as a motivational figure for her team. “I started the business over five years ago now”, Emma explains. “I completed my qualification in Beauty Therapy and then worked at Esporta, before moving on to Cowley Manor. As a first job, this was a fantastic challenge since I was only 20 and heading up a team of 12 people.” At the age of 21, Emma was offered the position of Spa Manager and showed exactly how ambitious she was since she was the youngest person at the time to hold this position within a 5-star hotel environment. “Hotel work was incredibly intense”, Emma recalls, “But it inspired me to want to run my own business. I am of the mindset that once I decide I want to do something, I have to do it! So when I heard that the Chapel Spa building was up for sale, my parents bought the building and I bought the business and the rest is history!” Like many good business leaders,
Emma is largely self-taught and as a result has many strings to her bow. “I had to get to grips with marketing, accountancy etc all very quickly and I inherited 20 staff, however there was no real structure in place,” Emma says. “It was a real eye-opener for me and for the first year of operation, I essentially took us back to basics. We worked incredibly hard to build relationships with the local community and really focus on customer service skills. At the end of the first year we invested in a huge refurbishment of what is a spectacular building and I then spent the next few years developing the girls, building on our brand reputation and as a result we remained strong throughout the recession. Reputation really is everything.” The one thing that Emma would wish for is to have a little more time. “I am a bit of a Scrooge and don’t like to pay other people to do something that I can do myself!” Emma laughs, “I read a lot of books and also like to tweet as often as I can as this is so important for filling any last-minute bookings etc. It’s a juggling act but one that I very much enjoy. Our feedback is always so positive and this is a great motivator for all of my staff. I

believe in our brand and am very headstrong and so have always remained loyal to our original values. I think it’s important to always believe in what you are doing rather than trying to emulate what others are doing.” And the future is looking rather bright for Emma and her team. The new website is set to launch and a new logo is being designed. “We really are incredibly lucky”, Emma says, “Clients travel from London to see us as they appreciate the setting that we can offer and find it nice to come somewhere so intimate. We have both regular and transient guests and that’s what keeps everything here so fluid. I love coming to work and I like to think that we have created an atmosphere that will leave people wanting to return.” CS

Have you noticed how some characters leave a lasting impression on you without even trying? Genial? Yes. Enthusiastic? Certainly. Approachable? Always. But there’s invariably also that something extra you can’t really put a finger on. I would call that something extra a ‘larger than life’ personality and no-one typifies that more than my fellow Brunsdon Director, Paul Baldwin. In fact, ‘larger than life’ is probably the first thing you’ll notice when meeting Paul for the first time. He’s the sort of person that will immediately dominate the space – in the nicest possible way! Paul is a rounded character in every sense of the word. Leaving Sir Thomas Rich’s school on a Friday, he started at Brunsdon as a junior motor insurance clerk the following Monday. That was in 1982, a year before I myself set foot in the company. So began a career lasting 30 years to date, during which time he gained experience in every facet of insurance and financial services before finding his niche as a Partner of the firm and independent financial adviser (IFA). Maybe that’s not surprising, as success as an IFA depends largely on a skill set that includes above all the ability to interact with clients. And Paul is nothing if not a ‘people person.’ Latterly, Paul’s position in the company has undergone a major shift. He’s reluctantly stepped aside from his client-facing advice role to concentrate on promoting the company as Operations Director, a job he was born to do and an opportunity he’s grabbed with both hands. Gloucester born and bred, Paul has always been passionate about his county and proud of the company’s heritage. His philosophy is very simple. “Gilbert Brunsdon started this firm way back in
1932 on the basis of ethics, integrity and service,” he says. “I want to make sure we continue to carry those qualities forward and build the business on the same footing. And I want to cast our net further afield to allow more people to benefit from what we have to offer.” What we have to offer is considerable. Notwithstanding the challenges posed by the Government’s Retail Distribution Review, due to be implemented at the end of this year, Paul has played a huge part in making sure Brunsdon is more than prepared, although he stresses there is no room for complacency. “No company has a given right to success. Success has to be continually earned and we can’t rest on our laurels. We are fortunate to be in an industry that is needed whatever the financial climate and as a relatively small company we have always punched above our weight. So we face competition from the big firms and one-man-bands. That always keeps us on our toes.” Paul was also the natural choice to take on the position of Chairman of Brunsdon’s Heartfelt foundation, our money-raising arm for local charities which last year raised a staggering £22,000. “Brunsdon is in the fortunate position of being able to give something back to the local community. Handing over a large sum of money to a worthwhile cause gives us a huge buzz which resonates throughout the company,” said Paul, following his most recent cheque handover to St. James City Farm in Gloucester. I’m convinced that with Paul as Director of Operations, we have the right man in the right place at the right time. Business is all about image and passion and creating a lasting impression. Enough said. CS

Carolyn Green, Head of Family Law at Rickerbys LLP Solicitors, and a practitioner with over 25 years experience, has recently been admitted as a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and appointed as a Family Law Arbitrator. Carolyn was interviewed to uncover more about arbitration Please explain what Arbitration is and how it can work in divorce cases? Arbitration has long been used in commercial disputes but its principles can be applied very successfully to family disputes. It is a modern, cost effective way of dealing with financial disputes that arise with relationship breakdown and divorce. The essence of arbitration is that a couple who are in dispute agree that it be resolved by a third party, in this case their arbitrator. The arbitrator’s decision is binding and is enforceable through the Court just like a Judgment. Family arbitrators are all experienced family law specialists which ensures that the couple will be dealt with by someone familiar with the language and application of family law.
Q A
What are the advantages of choosing arbitration rather than the more formal route of Court proceedings? Family arbitration, unlike Court proceedings offers the advantage of being a private process. Venues are chosen by the parties and at flexible times which can avoid the hostility, the inconvenience and the costs of going to Court. The Arbitration Award provides finality which can be enforced through the Courts.
Q A
What is your role as an arbitrator? My role as an arbitrator is to assist the parties in progressing their issues. I remain with the case from start to finish which provides consistency which is often sadly lacking in the Court system because of overworked Courts and financial funding constraints.
Q A
SEPTEMBER 2012
with Carolyn Green
Either approach must be approved by the Institute who will issue an Arbitration Agreement Form which, when signed, will bind the couple to the arbitration process. After this the couple themselves decide what format their arbitration should take. They are assisted in this by the principles of the Arbitration Act 1996. The main emphasis of that Act is to avoid unnecessary delay and expense, and to allow the parties to own, as far as possible the process they embark on.
Q A
What types of issues are covered? The process deals with exactly the same issues as divorce or family financial disputes but is based on the idea of party autonomy. The couple themselves are able to decide how documentation and evidence is gathered, how many hearings they need to have to determine issues and how quickly these hearings should occur. It is designed for parties to be able to represent themselves if they wish or to have solicitors and barristers to act on their behalf. It can speed up the process considerably.
Q A
How can you be engaged to arbitrate? I can be approached by a couple direct or through the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Q A
What rules govern this?
The Institute of Family Law Arbitrators have drawn up a set of rules which can be plugged into the Arbitration Act and used as a modern effective family dispute process.
How do you see your role and are there any others in the area? I understand that I am the first family law arbitrator to be appointed in Gloucestershire and indeed in a much wider area. I see my role as bringing fairness and speed to matrimonial cases, based on well developed legal procedures that produce certainty of outcome with a confidential and autonomous approach. Over many years I have become very aware of the pain caused by the divorce process and the delays and formality inherent in the Court process. I believe the arbitration process will reduce a lot of this pain and formality. CS

Fox, Suzanne Hall-Gibbins and Adrian Gill
Marketing for GROWTH In a conversation with Suzanne Hall-Gibbins at the Chamber, Fox and Adrian Gill from GillFoxJames talks about marketing as part of a growth strategy
Adrian: We are pleased to share some insights with businesses and support the Chamber in its role in connecting and supporting businesses in the County. After many years avoiding such institutions we have found that the Chamber is a great place to do business! We work with a variety of businesses from large corporates to SME’s and have found that these basic questions work for all. Is Marketing a science or an art? The answer is both. The science is around data and psychology. Understanding behaviour and measuring/predicting it via data. Once you know who to target and how, then the creative process takes over to do the sell. The campaign, the proposition, the hook that will drive the potential customer to your door. The key is bringing the two together.
Which segment of my audiences drives me the most profit? The quickest profit or adds the highest value to a potential trade buyer? If you cannot answer these do not spend any money on marketing until you can. You shouldn't rely on anecdotal evidence. Nor should you treat your SEPTEMBER 2012
clients as one. In understanding more about each segment you can truly understand how to speak to your different customers. Successful companies take time to look at the different ways they could segment their audiences (e.g. for B2B by industry, by job function, by size and if B2C then by age, by sex or by demographic). Understand the motivations for each segment, their buying process and how they consume information. From here create contact strategies that work out when, what and how to communicate. They don’t start with a question, “Should I use Facebook?” They start with what are the objectives, how are we going to measure them? What are the segments and relevant propositions and from here the optimum communication plan. In this plan will be the answer to whether or not to use Facebook, or how to use it.
What are the steps we should take to drive the business through Marketing? • First understand what strategic marketing is • Make sure all company growth/value objectives have tangible metrics that give a clear steer to the marketing function – KPIs
• Understand fully who your existing clients are – which are the most desirable and why. Once you have segmented your clients find out fully what they want from you – their motivations (critical success factors) • Audit the business against these critical success factors (including competitor analysis) • Audit marketing resource and decide if you need external support • If yes, all agencies are not the same. First understand what you are buying. E.g. an advertising agency is different to a design agency. Marketing strategy is a discipline in its own right. The strategy usually would take more than one person and at a very high calibre – your company depends on it. Get this wrong at your peril. • Produce a marketing strategy and a delivery roadmap with KPIs • Role out activity but use testing before committing any large budgets • Constantly review against objectives • Don’t start with Facebook! CS If you need any advice or help on anything in this article then please contact the Chamber of Commerce on 01242 308030.

business
Dressing for success is simple if you understand the rules At Suit the City we meet hundreds of people every year and many of them have the same question on their mind – what should I wear to create the right impression? Things used to be so simple; the more conservative (boring), the better. A twopiece suit was the only option when I started work in London in the eighties, directives were sent out instructing all staff to wear dark suits, white shirts, dark shoes and socks and sober ties! So dressing was easy for the men, but what about the women – did they want us to look like we had just left St Trinians? Weekends were about comfort, after a week suited and booted, we wore jeans whenever we could. Fast forward 25 years and the choices seem limitless, there are hundreds of retail outlets all vying for our trade and wanting to take our hard earned cash. At the same time, we are inundated with messages about first impressions, along with dress down directives in trendy companies, and articles describing fashion for the weekend, so where does that leave us? Confused, bewildered, unsure… yes, you are normal! So ladies, here are the rules for work:
1. Don’t reveal flesh, it is distracting and will only get you the wrong kind of attention. So, whatever they say in the magazines, don’t show too much cleavage, skirts should allow you to sit comfortably without exposing your thighs, underwear is not outerwear and leather is definitely off limits. Seethrough is a big no-no and you are not on holiday, so no spaghetti straps or bare midriffs.
2. Do wear well-fitting, well made, high quality garments. A natural fabric such as wool, cotton or cashmere will wear well, feel comfortable, it will keep you cool in the heat and warm when it’s colder. 3. You should wear colour, just not too much or you will risk looking like you work for an airline. Add some tasteful
116 COTSWOLD STYLE
jewellery to express your femininity, just nothing too big and noisy or it will distract everyone around you.
By Carol Rawson, Director, Suit the City & Suit the Country www.suitthecity.com
4. Do invest in a few classic items that mix and match together and you will feel professional, confident and comfortable whatever the occasion. Accessories should reflect your status – bags and shoes should be classic and make-up just enough. Men, here are your rules for work:
1. Keep your trainers and sportswear in the gym, where they belong. T shirts with slogans, shorts, cargo trousers and other beach or casual wear will undermine your authority and you may even risk being overlooked for promotion. 2. Avoid comedy ties and socks, throw out your badly fitting, tired, shiny suits and baggy trousers if you don’t want to look dated and cheap. Creased jackets and faded polo shirts are our pet hate, please make a bit of effort!
3. A well-cut suit will always look good; they do say that the suit maketh the man and we wholeheartedly agree. You can wear colourful ties and shirts to express your individuality. Just don’t mix up the checks and stripes and go for toning colours if you are unsure.
4. If you work in a dress down company or have dress down days, a beautifully fitted shirt in pure cotton will always look professional, as will well cut wool trousers or chinos. We all give out subliminal messages by what we wear, it is generally perceived that black is the colour of authority, red is about confidence (and will cheer up your colleagues), blue is about creating trust and shows traditional values. So, think about what message you want to give out. If you struggle with colour, keep items that go together next to each other in the wardrobe. I will never forget
a colleague coming into work wearing one brown and one black shoe – he had dressed in the dark to avoid waking his wife and only noticed when he walked into the bright lights of the office for a meeting! Grooming is another area where you can create the right impression, at all times you should be clean and tidy, we once turned away a job applicant because he had dirty fingernails and a greasy collar on his white shirt. Always keep your clothes clean and pressed, it is best to clean matching garments together. Your hair should be well cut and tidy, we suggest booking a regular appointment so that you always look good. Don’t wear overpowering perfume or aftershave, some of us find it overwhelming and it tends to infer that you haven’t had time to wash! Finally, you are not a walking billboard; let the brands pay for their advertising; create your own professional brand by following the rules and looking good! CS SEPTEMBER 2012

Community change If you want to make a difference in Gloucestershire, this is where to start:
Gloucestershire Community Foundation is dedicated to strengthening and engaging local communities by funding community based action that improves the lives of Gloucestershire’s most disadvantaged. Child poverty, unemployment, isolation, homelessness, domestic violence, people with life limiting illness and excluded young people are just some of the issues we’re helping tackle. We work in partnership with local people, helping fund local solutions to local problems. Our vision is to inspire and encourage local giving that enables positive change to benefit the most needy in our community. Our mission is threefold:
• to build an endowment that will permanently increase the level of funds available to community and voluntary groups in Gloucestershire; • to identify and understand where need exists in Gloucestershire; • to connect this need with local donors, distributing grants to community and voluntary organisations to address those needs. With the generosity and involvement of our donors, we have distributed over SEPTEMBER 2012
£3m in grants over the past five years supporting projects across Gloucestershire. Whether you’re an individual, a company, trust or local authority, we can help you to make an impact on an issue you care about. We act independently and our only agenda is to ensure that donors’ giving makes a lasting impact in areas they care about. Whether you have £500 or £5million to give, it doesn’t matter we value all donors and we aim to make giving affordable and enjoyable. From joining one of our funding initiatives to setting up your own Fund, to creating a legacy for the future, we can help you make a difference.
We ensure that our funds are open and accessible to voluntary and community groups across the county, by operating on a personal scale and allowing easy access to funds. We’re one of 57 foundations in the UK all sharing a common creed – that stronger communities can be built through local funding, local action and local knowledge of what makes each and every community unique. In times of financial stringency it is important to ensure that your charitable giving is as efficient and appropriate as possible. In partnership with Rickerbys LLP Solicitors and Brewin Dolphin, Investment Managers, we will be holding a legacy seminar during Remember A Charity Week in September, where we will highlight tax effective gifting opportunities/strategies and how Gloucestershire Community Foundation can play an important part in helping you to leave a lasting benefit for your local community. A meeting of minds The Daffodil is pleased to welcome their new Head Chef, Tom Rains. Emma Roberts went along to meet him and sample the culinary delights…
The Daffodil never fails to exude excellence through both the gorgeously glamorous setting and the execution of its dining standards. And so when restaurateur, Mark Stephens, invited me to meet their newest recruit in the shape of the great talent that is Tom Rains, how could I refuse? Tom Rain’s career started with a four year Savoy scholarship apprenticeship at The Lygon arms Hotel in Broadway with Head Chef Clive Howe, after which he moved to London, working as a Commis Chef under the guidance of John Williams at The Berkeley Hotel. Tom then moved to The Lanesborough Hotel where he worked his way up from Chef de Partie to Sous Chef under Paul Gaylor over a period of three years. Next came the opportunity to work a season for legendary Chef Peter Wyss at the world renowned 5 Star deluxe Palace Hotel in Gstaad, Switzerland. Returning to London, Tom worked one again for John Williams, but this time as his Sous Chef at Mayfair’s iconic hotel, Claridge’s. After three years in this position he continued to climb the culinary ladder and joined the infamous SEPTEMBER 2012
Marco Pierre White at L’Escargot as his Senior Sous Chef for a year, followed by a move to work with legendary Chef Anton Mosimann as Senior Sous Chef of his Private Dining Club in Knightsbridge. After 10 years of invaluable London experience, Tom moved to Wiltshire to take up his first Head Chef position at The Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury where he spent six years honing his leadership skills before accepting the unique opportunity to work with bestselling Food Writer and Chef Simon Hopkinson, overseeing a 10 strong brigade at The Montpellier Chapter Hotel in Cheltenham in 2011. This year, Tom joined forces with Mark Stephens at The Daffodil and accepted the challenge of heading up a team of 10. The plan now is to further develop the iconic status of the wonderful restaurant and build on its culinary reputation. Now in its fourteenth year, The Daffodil offers diners an air of sophistication. Tom explains what it means to him to be resident here, “I feel as though I have come home,” he
enthuses. “I love the restaurant and want to put my own stamp on the menu. I believe that the same standard of service should be observed, regardless of whether we are serving a table of two or a party of 40.” Tom doesn’t fail to disappoint with a lunch menu that is to die for. A wide selection of dishes are on offer and each is entirely faultless. He aims to add his own signature dishes to the menu but his focus is on sourcing the very best ingredients. “I’m lucky that Mark and I are approaching things from the same direction. As an independent, we are able to make informed decisions immediately with no complicated chain of command to adhere to and the collaboration between the two of us will be apparent in the finished product. If I discover a great new cheese or calf ’s liver, as I have recently, then I get a yes immediately! For me, cooking is fun again.” If you haven’t already then I strongly recommend going to witness Tom’s influence on the already great establishment. The synergie between the two is a star combination! CS

The story behind tea leaves
Never before has there been so much interest in the sourcing of produce and the traceability of where our food has come from. From meat to vegetables to the sourcing of olive oils, consumers and producers alike have developed a passion for talking about the journey of our food from field to plate. Stories can emerge which trigger a fascination and the story behind the tea served at The Montpellier Chapter is one of those. The Chapter, located in Cheltenham’s Bayshill Road, has a everyday house tea called Grandpa’s Anytime - a brew which has been sourced for them by Cliftonbased tea importers Lahloo. The tea is named after Arthur Njuguna Komo (pictured), the oldest known tea farmer in the world who turns 113 this year. His farm is located on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya at a relatively high altitude of 2036m. Arthur has been growing tea all his life but only recently has started importing directly to the UK. It was his granddaughter, Joy, who persuaded him to develop direct import links rather than selling his leaves anonymously to auction. The special bond with her grandfather and her modernist commercial aptitude is what makes this story intriguing. Joy has helped develop her grandfather as a brand and given unprecedented exposure to a traditional tea farmer who has barely left his hometown. His tea is now gaining international acclaim. Joy said: “When I think about my grandfather, I am reminded of all that is good and decent in this world. A handshake that means more than a contract, his direct questions that hide no ulterior motive, as he genuinely wants to know the answer. He taught me to be honest even when I would lose credibility. And in a vast world that he would never travel, he taught me the universal law of “Do unto others as you SEPTEMBER 2012
would have others do unto you.” Arthur and his granddaughter developed links with Kate Gover from Lahloo who has helped the family import their leaves to the UK. The aroma of this dry leaf is sweet and slightly tangy. It brews into a rich, red licqour. Kate Gover said: “The tea is delicious served black but a dash of milk also makes this a tea that is superior to most English Breakfast-style blends. I fell in love with it when I tasted it and importing it under the name, Grandpas Anytime, gives consumers a reassurance that this is a traditional blend.” Arthur’s farm lies between two main rivers (Rundu and Mukengeria) that have their source in Mt Kenya’s forest. The rivers supply the local community, farms and factory with clean unpolluted water. Approximately 3,700 small-scale tea farmers with a combined acreage of about 2092 acres farm the region. Most
On Friday September 7, The Montpellier Chapter will be staging an event entitled “Discover The World of Tea.” Guests will have the chance to sample a wide selection of teas under the guidance of Kate Gover, from Lahloo. Teas to sample will include white, black and green teas plus a chilled White Peony tea and a Darjeeling Afternoon from Makaibari served as a Darjeeling Rum Punch. Tickets are priced at £15 and include full afternoon tea served afterwards. Booking essential. Telephone 01242 527788. www.themontpellierchapterhotel.com
of the farmers are related and farm ancestral pieces of land that have been passed down from generation to generation. Women traditionally pluck the tea on the farms that belong to their husbands or fathers. Kate added: “Just like fine wine, a tea’s unique tastes and aromas are influenced by the “terrior” – the country, altitude, soil, rain, sun and the maker. As an importer of tea, I love to share the stories which help the consumers understand more about where their good old cuppa came from.” CS

Olympics vs football
Former Cheltenham Town football star Shane Duff compares our footballing heroes to our Olympic stars
‘I AM NOT TRYING TO SAY THAT FOOTBALLERS ARE SAINTS. I AM JUST TRYING TO SAY THAT THE COMPARISON ISN'T A FAIR ONE’
142 COTSWOLD STYLE
This is a comparison that has been rife in the press in recent weeks in light of the TeamGB success in London 2012. Footballers have a stereotype for being overpaid, arrogant mercenaries and up there own backsides. I have to agree that the money they earn is madness but they are only being paid ‘the going rate’ for their services at the present time. The money involved is crazy but who’s fault is that? Every big business is desperate to be involved in football as it is the worlds number one sport. It brings together so many. Olympians are seen as heroes, people who have dedicated their lives to becoming a WINNER. Even those who made the Olympic squad but fail to get a medal are seen as a success. I completely agree with the Olympians story, and find it inspiring to see the commitment and work ethic behind the scenes pay dividends. They deserve everything they get. I just disagree with the comparison to footballers as I don’t see it as a fair. It isn’t ‘like for like.’ One quote I have seen many times is this, “Olympic characters – just think of the main man Usain Bolt – all fun, interaction, taking pics with spectators camera’s – you would not really get that at football tournaments, or even Premiership games”. I feel that Usain Bolt is great with fans but he is allowed to. He wins the 100m Gold medal and dives into the stands celebrating embracing the public. In my opinion it is great to see. A footballer that scores a goal and dives into the crowd for photographs is rewarded with a yellow card and possibly a fine from his club or the Football governing body. Stupid if you ask me but that is the rules. In my experience of life I find that negative people shout louder. An example of this is the football world.
All football clubs have internet fans forums where fans post their thoughts after a game. I would bet that there are more fans posting messages after a defeat rather than a win. It’s the nature of society today. Prior to the Olympics all we read during the three week build up was of the shambolic organisation, whether it be transport networks, security or the cost of the whole event. In reality London hosted a fantastic spectacle and the world looked on in awe. The newspapers and press are so quick to slam the football industry, but in two weeks time the papers will make their money highlighting everything to do with football. We have all heard about the Olympics leaving a legacy and aiming to get more involved in sport. Something I am behind massively. Inside of me feels that when winter comes around, the Olympics will be a distant memory and normal life will resume. Football on the other hand increases participation year on year and inspires generation after generation of children to go out and play in a quest to emulate their heroes. I am not trying to say that footballers are saints. I am just trying to say that the comparison isn’t a fair one. If Wayne Rooney was to go on a night out and be photographed drunk it would be headline news. If he went to 5 charity dinners to help raise lots of money I don’t feel it would get the same exposure as it isn’t scandal. My point being that all the good things footballers do is never highlighted in the main. Stories like this don’t sell newspapers. interview “A WELL RUN CLUB SHOULD OPERATE IN THE BLACK AND IT’S IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT THE CLUB IS FINANCIALLY SELF- SUSTAINING’’
Anything that’s focused with fervour and resolve is always a good thing, unless of course it’s starting world wars or robbing banks. On and off the pitch the levels of intensity at Gloucester Rugby have always been driven with passion, guts and a strong belief that success is always within reach and the next few months at this venerable club will be no different. The former Financial Director has taken over as the Interim Managing Director. No dark clouds of change, no whiff of a new broom without a handle. It’s an appointment that’s been made for all the right reasons. Chris Ferguson is a hugely affable man with a ready smile. There’s no mask, no hidden agenda, just old school sincerity. His pedigree goes back to reading English at Oxford and then onto a Masters in Tourism/Management. This was followed by globetrotting in various guises within the travel industry; which included working in both China and the USA. Time spent at British Airways and then at Ascot Racecourse overseeing a £200M development primed him for his present position. Chris Ferguson commented,’ I’ve been lucky to see how other stadiums are run throughout the World, especially in the USA where they really know how to operate family friendly venues’. Chris further says,’ Ken Nottage the former MD here was incredibly generous in his belief and guidance, encouraging me to take on more general responsibilities for running the club’. The business model at Gloucester Rugby is a fine commercial balance between satisfying the fans, players, coaching staff and sponsors and then making the sums work. However Chris goes on to further say, ’this is a people business and I don’t want to be seen as some faceless bean counter. A club with this lineage deserves only the very best in terms of financial and operational steerage, but steerage where the individual is taken into account. The courage and skill of the team on the pitch is clearly vital, but equally important is our excellent team of coaching, medical, SEPTEMBER 2012
Fever pitch... Eric Barton meets up with Gloucester Rugby’s Interim Managing Director Chris Ferguson
operational and commercial staff who work tirelessly to put on the show’. In fact Gloucester Rugby turns over approximately £11M per year, returning a small profit in each of the last two years. Chris Ferguson simply says, ’a well run club should operate in the black and it’s important to ensure that the club is financially self- sustaining’. Only three out of the top twelve English clubs were able to achieve this in the 2010/11 season and Gloucester Rugby was one of them. Chris goes on to comment.’ It’s my job to make everything off the pitch run smoothly. The Gloucester fans are amazing and it’s true to say at home games they are the sixteenth man’. As I touch on Chris’ life outside Gloucester Rugby his eyes visibly brighten as he says,’ I have a great wife and two wonderful daughters, and I spend as much time as I can with them’. Kingsholm sits on seven acres with the infamous ‘shed’ being the focus of the fans passion. During the summer the club hosted a Tom Jones concert which played to a sell- out audience. Chris Ferguson said,’ it was a superb evening and a brilliant example of our supporters
connecting to something else through their club’. Match days at Kinsholm are of course very special and fans turn out in their thousands. Chris finally comments,’ it’s like a big party and we’re the hosts. The atmosphere at home games is electric. We put in two giant screens last summer and a new PA system this summer. We have a 16,000 capacity and we want to make sure that every one of those fans enjoys a great match day experience. I believe that if you have a happy team then you will have a performing team. Our new Director of Rugby, Nigel Davies is already making a huge positive difference to the club and it’s my job to help him in any way I can. The addition of some great new signings including England’s Ben Morgan at number eight, will also improve the squad’s strength’. It won’t be so much as a fever, more a controlled simmer as Chris Ferguson steers the Gloucester Rugby business into the immediate future. Fence Sponsorship at Calmsden Horse Trials marks 70 years of history
Calmsden Horse Trials is held at Ampney Down Farm in Gloucestershire and is organised by Jo and Chris Verey. The Verey family has farmed this land since 1959 and for the past 20 years it has been the venue for many hunt and pony club events. Now in its third year Calmsden is recognised as a highly desirable event and this year will welcome a number of new sponsors. A particularly nice addition to this year’s sponsors is Barnsley House Hotel which ironically is the house where Chris Verey grew up as a child. 70 years ago Chris Verey was born at Barnsley House and shortly after his mother; Rosemary Verey transformed the gardens combining styles from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The garden includes well known features such as the laburnum walk, temple with its pool, the knot garden and the potager. The gardens still attract visitors from around the globe. The gardens are now cared for and maintained by Richard Gatenby and his team who have very kindly volunteered SEPTEMBER 2012
to design a garden themed fence for the horse trials in October. The fence will be dressed to represent the gardens at Barnsley House Hotel and will be a really exciting addition to this year’s cross country course. “Rosemary Verey’s internationallyacclaimed garden at Barnsley House continues to be at the heart and soul of the 18 bedroom hotel, inspiring the interiors, menus and various other details,” comments Richard who has worked at Barnsley House since Mrs. Verey’s day. “In designing the fence for the horse trials, it’s been really marvelous to have the chance to extend the reach of her gardens beyond the hotel’s grounds, intertwining Mrs Verey’s spirit as a gardener with another timeless Cotswold pastime.” Calmsden are also delighted to have a title sponsor for the 2012 event. A and E Fire Protection who offer exceptional customer focus and fire safety products and are now one of the leading Fire Protection Centres for the West Midlands and the South West. Managing
Director Dene Stallard is a strong supporter of British Eventing and competes successfully at BE90 and BE100 Level. Other new sponsors include Cirencester Fire and Security Ltd, Chetwood Wealth Management Ltd and Haygain who will be sponsoring a fence at this year’s event. Calmsden is also very fortunate to have the support of Rendcomb College, McGills Accountants and NFU Mutual who have all been strong sponsors of the event since it started in 2010 and have agreed to support the event again this year. For spectators there will be a good selection of trade stands and hot and cold food available. Entrance for spectators is £5 including programme. CS For further enquiries regarding the event including trade stand and sponsorship enquiries please contact Jo Verey on 01285 654026 or email jo@ampneydownequestrian.co.uk. Welcome Cathryn Fry, our new regular racing correspondent to guide you through all things festival related this season...
I am delighted to be the racing correspondent for Cotswold Style for the 2012 / 2013 National Hunt Season. Over the winter months I will be bringing you previews of the major Cheltenham meetings, along with features on Cotswold racing life and interviews with local racing celebrities. To me the Cotswolds represent home, Cheltenham is my home town, we are truly blessed to have such beauty on our doorsteps. I think one of my favourite views in the whole of the world is standing on top of Cleeve Hill looking down at the natural amphitheatre of Cheltenham Racecourse. I first became involved in racing by attending race meetings and Point to Points with my family from a very early age. My late father was passionate about the sport and that love was passed on to me. It became very clear that by the time I was ten years old I was simply obsessed with horse racing. I was compiling my own form books, pictures of racehorses adorned my bedroom walls and I lived for weekends to be able to go to the races or to watch at home. My favourite racing memory happened just days after my thirteenth birthday in March 1989 when Desert Orchid won the Gold Cup. “Dessie” really did not appreciate the unique contours of the Cheltenham course neither did he like the underfoot conditions, which were officially described as heavy. There had been some doubt as to whether Racing would go ahead on the morning of the race, due to excessive rain and snow. Desert Orchid was by this time a National hero, Prestbury Park was packed to the rafters to see the Flying Grey take the Blue Riband of Steeplechasing. His sheer class, courage and tenacity got him past the post in front that day. Cheltenham rightly erupted, it was said that you could hear the cheer of the crowd in the Town Centre. Hats and papers flew in the air. I will never tire of watching that race. Racing is a rollercoaster of emotions, a heady mix of highs and lows. It is SEPTEMBER 2012

addictive, it will make you laugh and in equal measure it will make you cry. If I was trying to persuade someone to join me at a Cheltenham meeting for the first time, I would take them to either a day at the Paddy Power meeting in November or a day at the Festival itself. I guarantee that they would return again just from sampling the atmosphere alone. However, I would make sure that they saw every aspect of a day at the races, right from the saddling and parading of the horses through to the triumphant return to the winner’s enclosure. My greatest inspiration has been my father; everything I work on in the sport is for him. In every word I write and in every horse or race that moves me, his legacy lives on. I have been lucky enough to attend every major Racing Festival in the UK & Ireland all are fabulous in their own right but there is nothing that compares to the Cheltenham Festival, as they rightly say it is the greatest show on turf. If I could have a dinner party with three racing personalities I would invite: Sir Henry Cecil, trainer of 25 classic winners, who handles the mighty Frankel. Willie Mullins, Champion National Hunt Trainer in Ireland. He has the darling of Ireland; Hurricane Fly in his care. Last but by no means least would be Richard Dunwoody, my childhood hero who retired from riding on medical advice in 1999; he was a three time Champion National Hunt Jockey.

This March I took part in a broadcast for the major Irish Bookmaker Paddy Power. Are you ready for bootcamp? Editors are renowned for spending too much time seated at a desk, (insert derogatory remark here), but Personal Trainer Jodie Hart has set her sights on training Emma Roberts… So, the Olympics came and conquered any negative preconceptions and now Rio seems so far away. However, with Jodie’s help I think I stand a fighting chance of a place on the team… kind of. Personal training has always seemed a little intimidating to me. I like the fact that I can shout about the act of going for a “run” when actually I’ve probably covered no greater distance than a gentle jog to the local shop and back. However, this way of life has come to an end. I’ve been training with Jodie for
around a month now and she is a great motivator who gets results. She designs a workout to suit each particular client’s needs and targets the areas that you would most like to focus on. And she doesn’t need to shout at her clients to get them to work harder. Having a trainer like Jodie on hand to push you that bit further each time and to ensure that you are carrying out each exercise both effectively and safely is essential. And the best part is that I’m already seeing results and feeling a lot more energised. CS

A pioneering new expo on sustainable transport is set to put Cheltenham in pole position in the race for a greener, cleaner lifestyle It may be famed for its Regency heritage however Cheltenham is set to get a glimpse of the future with the arrival of a pioneering event, the Qualcomm Halo Sustainable Moto Expo 2012. Taking place at Cheltenham Town Hall on 8 and 9 September, the Expo is set to inspire a new generation of young engineers and showcase some of Britain’s latest lowcarbon thinking and technology. During the weekend, Cheltenham’s Inner Promenade will be turned into a futuristic car showroom as a range of low-carbon vehicles go on display. The vehicles, which range from super-sleek concept cars to robust ready-to-buy models, will give visitors an idea of how our roads could look in the not-toodistant future. Pete Allison is the man who brought the Greenbelt Arts Festival and Wychwood to Cheltenham; as Events Director for the Expo he is excited about the wider significance of the event: “The British motorsports and automotive industries are two sectors that are growing and forging a way through a difficult time,” he says. “We’re exploring the future and bringing some very exciting people to Cheltenham. Furthermore, the public will see some phenomenal cars that are really beautiful to look at, cars that will change perceptions of what green motoring means.” At a time of skills shortages in the UK, the event is being viewed as a muchneeded way of stimulating interest in the engineering sector. Such is the significance of the Expo, it has caught the attention of Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, who will be participating in the debates and talks taking place at the Town Hall alongside major industry and academic figures. Cotswold-based actor and presenter Robert Llewellyn – star of TV programmes such as Red Dwarf and Scrapheap Challenge – is an advocate of green motoring and among the line up of speakers. Martin Horwood MP – also on the line-up – believes the event will show energy efficient vehicles in a good light: “It’s terrific that the Expo is happening here in Cheltenham. This will be a showcase for greener transport but a great showcase for Cheltenham too.” Some of Gloucestershire’s young engineers of the future will be taking part in the event. Students from Dean Close, Pate’s Grammar, Chosen Hill and Chipping Sodbury schools will be debating the future of green transport while young teams who have designed, built and raced energy-efficient vehicles will be showing off their cars and sharing their experiences with the crowds. A team from Oxford Brookes University will show how design ideas become efficient engineering solutions, while members of the Energy and Power Group at the University of Oxford
will showcase their super-sleek electric vehicle PEGGIE. The Expo took seed from an original idea by the Rotary Club of Cheltenham North to hold a karting event and is the first step towards a regulated low-carbon street race planned for next year in Cheltenham. The 2013 race will be the forerunner of a groundbreaking fullperformance low-carbon Cheltenham Street Race. Planned for 2015, it will see Cheltenham’s streets transformed into a racetrack as low-carbon racecars compete on a circuit around the town. At a time of high oil prices and exciting developments in low-carbon technology, Britain is leading the way in the low-carbon automotive and motorsports sectors. The innovation showcased during the two-day event is bound to touch many aspects of our lives in the future, reaching beyond transport and into our homes and our workplaces. It’s an exciting and unique insight into what the future has in store – fasten your seatbelts! CS For more information visit www.cheltenhammotorsports.com

How will you remember the London 2012 Olympic Games? Dust isn’t allowed to settle on the park just yet, we’re now gearing up for the Paras, but so many people are nevertheless, in a period of reflection… with pride, enjoyment, surprise, and fresh ambition just some of the emotions involved. Whatever your experience it will be hard not to retain some pretty vivid memories. Friends who went to watch, say London was almost like a theme park – with a contagiously glorious atmosphere. “Not like London at all” I’ve been told. “Everyone so friendly and happy!” (The irony is not lost on me). For me, the outstanding memory has to be without question, the almost unfathomable achievement for Team GB in the Equestrian sports: Silver for the Eventing team (it was a team Bronze in Hong Kong… so guess what we want in Brazil?!). To include a member of the Royal family in Golden Jubilee year, added to the fairy tale. Gold for the Show jumping team – including the most dramatic jump off I think I’ve ever seen in my life. And an almost total clean-up in the Dressage: Team AND individual Gold… and an individual Bronze. British Dressage has never previously won an Olympic medal, ever - of any colour. So to come back with so much bling is not only a remarkable achievement… it’s also history in the making. The last two years have seen tremendous results for our riders and their incredible horses and hopes were high for the Games, but in any sport – and especially where there are animals involved – you cannot take anything for granted. Oh and by the way, all those medals in Dressage have come back to
Gloucestershire. Carl Hester and his pupil (!) Charlotte Dujardin are based in Newent, with third winning team member Laura Bechtolsheimer in the Cotswolds. Carl has had his sights on an Olympic medal for many years, but for Charlotte – her rise to the very top of the sport has been meteoric. Two years ago, Charlotte had never even competed at Grand Prix level and now she is individual Olympic Gold Medallist. I went to see Carl and Charlotte at the yard, a few days after the closing ceremony. They are back at work, training the younger horses and heading off to more competitions. For both of them, after the overwhelming pride of seeing their self-produced horses perform so magnificently at the Olympics, the sight of them now happily grazing in the field at home enjoying such a well-earned rest, is almost just as good. The thing about achievement like that, on a world stage, is that pride is so infectious. I was jumping up and down with nails bitten to the quick, watching their medal winning performances and I don’t mind admitting that I cried and cried and hugged everyone within 20 metres when Charlotte got the Gold. I wasn’t there, I’ve never been any help to any of them and I can lay no claim on any of our athlete’s phenomenal achievements. But I’m British – and so are they. Everyone who took part did it for our country… and we are all a part of that. It spreads like fire… pride, a sense of belonging and enormous accomplishment. That is why these games have achieved the biggest success of all; giving every one of us, a sense of triumph. Roll on the Paralympics. CS SEPTEMBER 2012
