Welcome

It’s the heavenly month of June and summer is well and truly now here. Cotswold Style brings you some fascinating characters this month. First we meet our Real Life, Jennifer Simms who is a Ward Sister at Cheltenham General Hospital. Nigel Aplin has been ascertaining the vocational world of nursing and the fantastic contribution these ‘angels’ give to society. While Stef Calleja-Gera has discovered the charitable input made by one of Gloucestershire’s most prominent aristocrats, The Countess Bathurst who resides at Cirencester Park. Lady Bathurst was recently appointed as The High Sheriff for Gloucestershire and is already extremely busy with her commitments in the county, including reaching out to adults who are illiterate. June is the time when many parents can expect to see some ‘action’ courtesy of their offspring. Whether it is the school Sports Day, end of term galas and proms or for many, the time to celebrate now that crucial exams have finished, especially those doing GCSEs and A Levels. The Cotswold Gent and Angela Chancellor from Cotswoldia have written about the somewhat cringey incidents that can happen at the Parents Day picnic and School Ball. They are sure to give you a good chuckle! June is going to be the most important political month most of our lives will ever witness. The gauntlet will finally be laid when we go to the polls to vote on the status quo of Britain remaining or leaving the European Union. The county’s MPs are split with their decision and give their reasons why in this month’s Westminster In The Cotswolds column, which may help, if you’re still undecided with you your decision. The residents of the Cotswolds along with the rest of Britain will be celebrating the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II this month. We are all indebted to what our dynamic monarch has done to fly the flag for our state. So it goes without saying on behalf of all the residents of The Cotswolds, HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY YOUR MAJESTY and may there be plenty more! Best wishes,

Emma Logan, Editor editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

Style Interview

REAL LIFE

JENNIFER SIMMS Nigel Aplin met with Jennifer Simms, a Ward Sister at Cheltenham General Hospital PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANGUS BETHUNE

I don't know Andrew Lloyd Webber nor have I ever met him. I need to now. Picture a hospital ward, a singing sister serenading her patients, the first evermedical musical; I’ve even met the lead. Problem is, even though she's a trained classical singer, given to spontaneous arias whilst changing the odd bedpan, Sister Jennifer Simms has no intention of ever giving up the real role that life has asked her to play, a leading lady in the care of her patients at Cheltenham General Hospital. For sure, humour and a little levity have their place in such an environment; the Greeks would have it so, masters of early medicine, comedy and tragedy. Never, though, more appropriate than in the reach of those who ease us in and out of life. It is more than tempting to search for superlatives over and above superlatives which cannot fully illustrate the demands of the role nurses fulfil. They don't exist, they are etched in the faces and broken bodies of the patients they imbue with physical and mental relief. That there is an intuitive spirit of extreme sensitivity and care is one of life's sacred truths, that there are those with healing hands, that you and I do not possess, is one of life's eternal mysteries and a nod towards divine compensation; a gift for which we are inadequately grateful when fate deals us an unwanted hand. Our hospitals are populated with genuine carers who give much more than life has any right to ask of them. As such, this is as much about them as the person who sits opposite me, a natural and charismatic ambassador for the

profession she is so driven by with a compelling and vehement passion, Sister Jennifer Simms. Jennifer greets me in uniform. Jennifer not Jenny, she's not a Jenny, I do not even ask, as Mandy to Amanda, there is a marked difference, a personality shift that is either assured or demure. Some people need the authority of uniform to define what they do. Not Jennifer. She transcends it with the sheer vitality of a comet's velocity through stardust; a laugh that dances and sparkles and a thirst for what makes life good. Having been born in London, her parents moved to Jersey. Yes, she did play at nurses, at two, much taken by the uniform of a nurse visiting her newly born sister; she became ‘Jennifer the Nurse.’ Cabin fevered by the island she called home, it was a naïve eighteen year old that found herself in London as a student nurse at the Middlesex, “I’m still naïve in a way; I like to think the best of people and find myself extremely disappointed when they don’t live up to expectations. I’ve always been very giving which is why I knew I always wanted to be a nurse.” Initially wanting to become a midwife, Jennifer, quite literally, did not find people

sick enough whilst paediatrics was an emotional challenge too close to the desire to have children herself. Her time spent at the Middlesex were defining years, as they were for the hospital, which pioneered one of the first AIDS Centre’s and the first sex change operation. There is no doubt in Jennifer’s mind that there was no better place to learn her craft or, indeed, to confirm that she was a vocational rather than a career nurse, “The difference is that I’m eclectic; as some people develop they find themselves in administrative and management positions. I’m not one of them, as my personality changed, so did my specialisation but I have always wanted to be involved in some aspect of nursing.” It becomes self-evident that Jennifer’s days were as halcyon as they were heady, barefoot in taffeta at The Savoy or the Café Royal, dancing into the dawn to see a new sunrise through to sunset. Ding Dong. The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there. And yet, always near, too near to that thin line which has defined her life, “The first death which really affected me was that of a very handsome young man in his early twenties, as I laid him out I was aware of what a beautiful and unmarked body he had, he died of testicular cancer.” “I am scared of death personally; I don't know why because it's so peaceful, it's so beautiful at the end if you can achieve that and I love achieving that sense of peace both with my patients and relatives. A patient of mine had just moved into rehab in Tewkesbury, she >>> COTSWOLD STYLE JUNE 2016 13

“I have never understood the mawkish compulsion to watch Holby City or Casualty; they really aren’t real or indicative of the real spirit and camaraderie that bonds this happy band of sisters.” had been ill before but was told she only had a matter of a month to live. She asked me what it was going to be like at the end. Understandably her daughter was very anxious and they both needed to come to terms with the situation in a very short period of time. I answered their questions as honestly and clearly as I could, giving them peace of mind. As the end drew ever nearer I asked her to do one thing for me, ‘when you get up there, you've got to save me a seat please?’ She looked at me and said, ‘with a really big gin and tonic?’ I said ‘yes, that’s for me when I get there’; she died at peace.” “I’m spiritual rather than religious but I love being in a church listening to or singing choral music especially a solo, it really gets me deep inside. The best nurses are those that are emotionally intelligent and have a sense of intuitive spirituality, it is vital for what we do. My experience of life and losing people has made me more of a spiritual nurse. I remember a young nurse, only 21 or 22 years old; she had a very rare insight into people’s humanity and spirituality. She was very religious but it varies; obviously some nurses are totally agnostic, it’s not black and white and our everyday experiences can make us go one way or another.” After London she moved to Birmingham and cardiology, “There was something innately uplifting with the arrival of the helicopter and a newly harvested heart.” It is Jennifer’s contention that men do not change after the age of twenty-five, by implication women do. Another life change and a move to ITU, intensive care, constantly on the edge of life and death, an ever moving conveyor belt of horrific road accidents and life threatening cases 14 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

requiring anything from dialysis to cardiac drugs. Having spent twenty years in intensive care Jennifer came to the self-realisation that her personality was better suited to active engagement with patients and their families, “I was better when patients were awake needing psychological support to wean them off a ventilator; preferring when I had a fully sedated patient to build relationship with the relatives. I’m very personable that's what I'm good at; relationships within the context of my job.” Jennifer’s specialisation at Cheltenham is all things gastrology, basically everything from the throat down to well beyond the waist and everything in between. I sense Jennifer is on the brink of delivering something of importance. She is. It’s something where she wants to use her words carefully, “It’s not nice,” she tells me. “It’s a horrible way to die.” Give it to me Jennifer. Journalism isn’t good journalism unless it seeks to inform and educate. The biggest killer for the under 60s is now alcohol related. “Watching people die with internal bleeding is one of the worst ways to see somebody die; I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Alcohol is so socially acceptable it is not positioned in the same way as tobacco; no awful images on bottles as there are cigarette packets. Dealing with cases related to alcohol are incredibly complex and challenging and we all want to succeed; there is nothing worse than releasing an alcoholic only to have them return within a month with cirrhosis of the liver. I like a good gin and tonic or glass of wine but alcohol abuse is of epidemic proportions. I don’t want to preach or lecture anybody but my alcohol consumption has certainly lessened.” I do not know how many nurses or

doctors work or have ever worked at the Department of Health. Not many I’m willing to bet. If I were Minister of Health my first appointment would be that of a senior Sister, somebody of Jennifer’s wisdom and experience. Jennifer herself is quite convinced of the excellence of the NHS, not necessarily of how it is run. “I'm passionate about the NHS; if you're really sick you need to be in an NHS hospital, they put so much money into on-going training and management training. I did the Institute of Leadership and Management course last year, the knowledge of how to manage people is invaluable and we can do it far better than the business world. So much time and investment is put into the way doctors and nurses train and manage, it is easily the best health service in the world but it is the doctors and nurses who really know how to make it work, there is no substitute for ‘hands on’ experience.”

000 Real Life Jennifer Simms June 2016:Layout 1

Somebody call Jeremy Hunt. I asked Jennifer what she’d do straight away to improve the NHS and of course she knows what to do, “We need a thoroughly workable and comprehensive rehab system; we desperately need more rehab beds that enable patients to be looked after, a ‘step down’ unit for patients who are getting better. They still need nursing care and they still need to be helped with their washes but they don't need to be in an acute setting. It would make such a difference to the move out of hospital, stopping this bed-blocking situation, enabling the discharge teams to improve the fantastic job they already do. Above all it would radically diminish the chance of infection which is one of our greatest problems.” I have never understood the mawkish compulsion to watch Holby City or Casualty; they really aren’t real or indicative of the real spirit and camaraderie that bonds this happy band

of sisters. Jennifer is the first to admit that she works with an incredibly driven team, “We couldn’t do this job without the support of each other, we are very much a family dedicated to the welfare of our patients, which is absolutely typical of nurses throughout the NHS.” They look after each other to set the highest standard of nursing they continuously strive for; a team spirit that inspires and fuels the force of healing in circumstances humanity can barely comprehend. It is difficult to fully assess how much our nurses are undervalued, in pure economic terms hugely. Given the length of their days and weeks and willingness to stay on when something has to be and it is done, it is inestimable. I find there is a compelling argument to means-test patients who can afford to pay somewhat towards the cost of such exceptional care. There’s no discretionary 12.5 % service charge in hospitals and the

lights aren’t turned off at midnight. Jennifer’s professional devotion and competence is truly inspiring and it is tempting to think it leaves little time for the person underneath. I’m not sure that it does but if anybody can find the time, Jennifer can. We talk of families, two children, Edward doing his ‘A’ Levels and Charlotte at Liverpool reading English. We talk of divorce. Nurses bleed too. Jennifer’s perfect day would be a round of golf first thing in the morning, allowing enough time for early morning coffee and laughter with a really good friend, a fitness session followed by a yoga session, a little retail therapy on the way down to the cinema, then a wonderful concert either at Gloucester Cathedral or the College chapel in the evening followed by a curry, “That would be heaven.” I leave Jennifer, spiritually charged with gas and air, a shot in the soul. First cut is the deepest... COTSWOLD STYLE JUNE 2016 15

INTERVIEW

THE HIGH SHERIFF OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE Stef Calleja-Gera met with the Countess Bathurst to chat about her most important role to date PHOTOGRAPHY BY: STEF CALLEJA-GERA WWW.SCG-PHOTOGRAPHY.COM

First things first, we just have to know who designed your outfit for your recent ceremony to become High Sheriff of Gloucestershire? The lovely Lindka Cierach, who came out of retirement specially to make my High Sheriff outfit for me, designed my gorgeous outfit. Lindka is best known for her design of The Duchess of York’s wedding dress and we have worked together in the past. We spent many happy hours tweaking and brainstorming and I am so delighted with it. Judy Bentinck – who is none other than Lady Cirencester and The Countess of Portland in her other life, designed the equally fabulous hat! Her husband is well known actor Tim Bentinck (also Lord Cirencester and The Earl of Portland), who plays David on The Archers and has had many other film, stage and TV roles to his credit. I wanted something with a little bit of the ‘wow’ factor but also a suit that would last a lifetime. I hope we managed a bit of both. We already know that you are a shrewd business woman, generous philanthropist and an incredible multi-tasker but we’d love to know what makes Lady Bathurst tick & a bit more about your history…. I was born in Marlborough but moved fairly soon afterwards to be closer to our family in Devon and Dorset, where I was brought up with my elder brother Mark. We were both instilled with good oldfashioned values and traditional views and this has always been the basis of my overview of life. Privately educated throughout school, I by-passed university 28 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

and instead decided to start my working life as soon as I could. After a few years of various ‘teenage’ jobs, I struck out independently by travelling abroad to the States and instead of spending the planned 6 months; I ended up staying 5 years. I loved every moment but at 26 decided it was time to grow up and returned home to become a partner in the family book business in Dorset. We had three independent bookshops at the time and I ran the flagship branch in Lyme Regis.

I am sure our readers would like to hear how you met your husband the Earl? Mutual friends introduced us at a lunch party in Tetbury, November 1993. I genuinely had no idea who he was until about the moment we tucked into the apple crumble, if memory serves. We didn’t see each other again until the following summer when I was returning from a friend’s wedding (I actually caught the bouquet!) - I was driving past Cirencester and dropped in to say hello. I never really left. We were married in 1996 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Having spent some time with you, I’m in awe of your ability to combine a huge respect for English traditions with a stalwart attitude towards “getting the job done” regardless of how muddy or messy it might be! Can you explain to the readers why that mix of tradition with a forward thinking attitude is so important to maintain… I’ve always been a stickler for a good work ethic and I’m also as traditional as they come. I love the British way of life, and having been brought up with a family filled with veterans from the First and Second World Wars, plus my father who fought in the Sumatra, I want to protect it as much as I can – especially within the countryside. Having said that, it’s vital to look forward to the future and I truly believe we can do that without losing our traditions and values. The world is moving at an incredibly fast pace and we should embrace it and remain flexible – yet this should never be at the cost of our core respect, compassion and kindness for each other and our country. You’re undoubtedly a very busy woman who’s passionate about a number of different causes, both local and beyond the Gloucestershire borders. Tell us a bit about them and what drives you… That’s a difficult question! My interests and passions are so varied I’m not sure I could list them all here! My year as High Sheriff is only one month in and I’m already learning so much about this wonderful county. The voluntary sector is full to bursting of extraordinary >>>

people who are giving so much of their time to support those who need it and I’m deeply impressed by all they do. To give an example; our Police Force is extraordinary and I’ve had a fascinating time learning about the huge role they play in the county, keeping us as safe as they can. People are too quick to malign them and I hope I’ll be able to support them in any way I’m able. They are dedicated and committed – I’m a huge fan. I’m also incredibly keen to help with illiteracy during my year as High Sheriff; sadly a very high number of our adults are unable to read and I hope I’ll be able to do something constructive to help. I’ve started a Book Club in Eastwood Park Women’s Prison, and the groups of ladies I have are responding well to the initiative. It’s something I plan to carry on after my year, as I like to see things through – no matter how long it takes. What drives me? I think a deep-set wish to help people. I’m in an incredibly fortunate position and I hope over the last 20 years I’ve been of use to my community and I’d like to continue to get involved in as many projects and initiatives as time will allow. I have a deep sense of duty and whilst I’m only one little fish in a very large pond, if I can make a difference, no matter how small, then that will mean the world to me.

I know that you are also the proud owner of 4 fabulous holiday lettings in Gloucestershire and Devon, which I’ve been lucky enough to visit and photograph. Please do tell us more about them… My four holiday cottages are my pride and joy. I’d been wanting for many years to develop a small number of properties to offer to the holiday market and of course Gloucestershire is one of the most beautiful destinations to visit in Europe, if not the world. I now have three here on the estate – my first was gorgeous Apsley Cottage in Sapperton, which was almost derelict when I took it on and so I was able to transform it into a cosy three bedroom Cotswold stone cottage – ‘chocolate box’ perfect! Keepers Barn and Clover Barn came a year later when we purchased Kemble Farm in 2013 and they’re right in the middle of the farm, so have gorgeous 30 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

views and are incredibly peaceful. Since I refurbished them, they’ve proved to be very popular; the views are stunning. Then at the beginning of 2014 my beloved Aunt died and I inherited our family home in East Devon. It took two years and much stress if I was honest, to completely overhaul. But it’s now utterly beautiful and has a uniqueness that I hope will make it a home away from home for visiting families. It sleeps 12, has a HUGE garden, games room and the 360degree views are breathtaking; you can see right through to the sea beyond the hills. I adore it, as I spent much of my childhood there (my family have lived at High Grange since 1950, my father farmed the land) and it is a place of peace and tranquillity. A little girl who stayed there was inconsolable when she left and said ‘I don’t want to leave the Happy House’ – it was the biggest compliment she could have paid me because that’s exactly what it is. It’s 5* in décor and I’m so pleased with all the effort I made as it’s now truly the most amazing place. It brings back so many happy memories and now I’ve opened it as a holiday home, I hope that many more families will add to those special times by making some of their own memories. I know my aunt would have approved, as she always believed it was a family home through and through. I understand you have also set up a school for butlers and an online clothing store; that’s quite an array of different projects! Do you go looking for new ideas or do they find you? I have what I call ‘light bulb moments’ – some good, some not so good! But I love having a go at everything and I’m constantly thinking of new ideas. (At

High Grange

which point, to be fair, everyone dives under the nearest piece of furniture for cover.) I’ve got lists and lists - life will not be long enough to fulfil them all I fear! But as long as I can meet my Maker, look him in the eye and say ‘I did my best’ then I think that’s a good way to go. Life is for living and it’s all a learning process too – so if there’s a will, there’s a way. And I definitely wouldn’t want to have any regrets, or be accused of ‘not having a bash’ at something I believed in.

You’ve recently been appointed as High Sheriff of Gloucestershire. For those who don’t know, can you tell us a bit about how that came about, the history of the position and some of your new duties? I cannot even begin to describe what an honour it has been to be invited to fulfil this historical role. ‘Shire Reeves’ date back to the late 10th century when King Edgar brought the entire country under one crown but he needed a representative in each county to keep the peace, to muster an army when needed, to oversee law and order, to collect taxes for the crown and to protect the judiciary when they visited the county, amongst many other duties. It is one of the oldest offices in the country and is steeped in history. Nowadays the High Sheriff of each county is a more ceremonial office but

25/05/2016

12:01

Page 31

Style Interview holds a great deal of influence when it comes to supporting the charitable sector, as well as the more historical roles of working with law and order. My duties include working with charities and helping to connect those that have a natural synergy with others. Supporting the sitting Crown Court judges, the magistrates and the visiting Circuit Court judges, as well as the police, the prison service and helping organisations whose aims are to engage with young people who may be faced with the temptation of slipping onto the wrong side of the law, thereby guiding them away from anti-social behaviour. There are of course the ‘High Days’ when I’m able to support the Lord Lieutenant on Royal Visits within the county, as well as being invited to the annual official events but there is also much to be done behind the scenes. Each High Sheriff has his or her own interests and as previously described, I’m passionate about improving adult illiteracy. It’s a huge role and is more than fulltime but because it is entirely independent (each High Sheriff is completely selffunded and has no financial support whatsoever from the public purse), the opportunities to really explore the extraordinary projects, groups and charities within the county are endless. It’s enormously exciting and I love every second. We are so lucky in Gloucestershire to have a massive section of society who want to help others and largely on a voluntary basis. It’s humbling to see how much is given by a great number of people to simply better the lives of others. It’s quite unusual to have so many women in such senior roles, in fact it could possibly be the first time in history - how does it feel to have so many women in power? Much has been made about the number of women in positions of power within the county over this year and whilst truly historic, it’s not some marvellous conspiracy to promote feminism! In fact, on a personal level I could not be less of a feminist. This may horrify some but whilst equality has its place on many levels, I truly believe that it should always be a case of ‘the right person for the right job’ and whilst an interesting coincidence, it is not designed to fly the flag of sisterhood! The fact there are so

many women in senior positions is due to the merits of each individual – I’d be slightly horrified if it was for any other reason. I’m rather un-PC when it comes to this sort of thing and I still enjoy the oldfashioned values of a true gent. I make no apology for the fact I appreciate a door being opened for me, or a seat being proffered, I will never shrink from acts of good manners and I will always enjoy the protection of a chivalrous man. Does this make me a lesser woman? No. Of course not. Is it demeaning to women to expect chivalrous behaviour? I truly believe not. Intelligent women recognise we are equal to men in brainpower and this is absolutely right and we should enjoy equal opportunities in that respect – but muscle-power? No, I’ll leave the chopping of the logs to a chap if that’s ok with you!

On the subject of women in positions of power, the Queen recently celebrated her 90th birthday and is still working tirelessly – do you see her as a role model for yourself and the younger generation? Her Majesty is an extraordinary lady. She has given her life completely selflessly to her country and she has always been for me, throughout my life, a role model. Her contribution to the lives of her subjects is an example to every single one of us and is a constant reminder that we should serve our communities in whatever way we are able. If we could follow in her footsteps, then we would be better people for it. I have enormous admiration for The Queen and for her family. In short, we could all learn from their example. I am honoured to be in the office of High Sheriff during her 90th year and I just hope I can do my bit to support her incredible work. It’s clear to see that you’re also hot on your social media – people might not associate a person with the title of “Lady” as someone who’s so techsavvy; do you feel it’s important to stay so connected? Modern technology is here to stay and forms, for better or worse, an integral part of our society. I tweet regularly (@CotswoldLadyB – feel free to follow!) and I enjoy it but one has to be constantly wary of the darker side of social media and the tendency for anonymous ‘keyboard warriors’ to attack

those who cannot defend themselves. But on the positive side, there is the huge ability to converse with people who are fascinating and funny, intelligent and informed, positive, kind or thoughtful. It connects members of our society who may be otherwise lonely or disengaged and it offers the ability to do an enormous amount of good in times of desperation. I can think of endless examples of lost children found, dogs returned to their families, charities highlighted and promoted, to say nothing of the promotion of the common good. In my case it’s a wonderful opportunity to highlight the work of the High Sheriff – you’d be surprised by the number of people who have not heard of the role or have any idea of what a High Sheriff does and so it’s this side of social media that I enjoy and encourage. I’ve met some wonderful people through Twitter and I hope to meet many more. I value them all and the capacity for humour is endless.

It seems like you’re already an extremely busy lady but are you looking to get involved in any other projects – what does the future hold for Lady Bathurst? At the moment I’m concentrating wholly on my role as High Sheriff and as this will take me to April 2017, I’m not really making any concrete plans other than to do the best I can for Gloucestershire over that time. For the long-term future? Who knows – watch this space, there won’t be a dull moment! www.bathurstholidaycottages.co.uk Twitter: @CotswoldLadyB

150 LAKES BANG IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COTSWOLDS Jill Bewley from the Cotswold Water Park Trust takes you on a journey of discovery through the water, wildlife and wonderful activities all available in the Cotswold Water Park As a holiday destination, the Cotswold Water Park is relatively new but this unique area owes its watery landscape to the rich deposits of Ice Age gravel which were laid down here many thousands of years ago, on top of blue grey Oxford clay formed from ancient Jurassic seabeds. Millions of tons of sand and gravel have been extracted over the past fifty years leaving behind a network of more than 150 crystal clear lakes, set across the Gloucestershire and Wiltshire countryside lying north of Swindon and south of Cirencester. These lakes of varying depths, shapes and sizes are now home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, watersports and wonderful places to stay and are collectively known as the Cotswold Water Park. There is so much happening within the Water Park that it can be difficult to know where to start – many people begin their visit at the Gateway Information Centre, ideally situated just off the main A419 near South Cerney, with easy access and plenty of free parking. Why not collect a free map of the area from here and take the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the layout whilst enjoying a coffee and cake overlooking the lake? During busy times, the information desk is manned by friendly and very knowledgeable volunteers who will help you get the most from your stay, whether it’s just a few hours birdwatching or a fortnight with the family. Did we mention there were 150 lakes in the Cotswold Water Park? This means that there literally is ‘something for everyone’. If adrenaline fuelled watersports are your thing, then you are in the right place. For wakeboarding, waterskiing, 32 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

cableskiing, inflatable rides and more, you can try these out at Lakeside Ski (www.lakeside-ski.co.uk) and Cotswold Watersports (www.cotswold watersports.co.uk) – make sure you book ahead though, the summer holidays are a very popular time. For slightly more sedate watersports (but no less wet) such as sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding and more, there are plenty of places where you can dip your toe in the water. Contact CWP Hire (www.cwphire.com), Cotswold Country Park and Beach, which also has the famous inland beach too (www.cotswold countrypark.co.uk), South Cerney Outdoor (www.southcerney outdoor.co.uk) and Waterland (www.uk watersports.co.uk) all of whom will be happy to help you have a great time, whether you are a beginner or a pro. Again, during busy times, to avoid disappointment, check their websites for more information about booking and availability. For people looking to join a

club and learn how to sail, there are many long established sailing clubs, including Cotswold Sailing Club, Whitefriars, South Cerney and Bowmoor. For people who would prefer to stay on terra firma, then there is still so much to choose from in terms of activities. How about angling, archery, clay pigeon shooting, cycling, high ropes adventure, forest skills, rally driving, horseriding, sculpture trails, nature reserves to name but a few? For more information of any of these outdoor pursuits, take a look at the website for the Water Park – www.waterpark.org – you should find it all on there. If you like to sample the local food and drink, then again the choice is huge – from lakeside cafes, bustling brasseries, gastro pubs and tasty takeaways – the only problem is choosing which one. Many of the pubs in the area are dog friendly and have lovely beer gardens for those long summer evenings – plus don’t

forget the beautiful towns located in the Water Park area, of Cricklade, Fairford and Lechlade all offering a great choice of eateries. For people wishing to stay in the Water Park, either on a short break, a summer holiday, or even purchase a property, then the best thing is to explore the area, to see what ‘floats your boat’. The Cotswold Water Park Four Pillars Hotel offers luxury lakeside accommodation, either in the main hotel or in self-catering apartments with use of onsite spa facilities, restaurant and brasserie. Nearby you will find the luxury three to six bedroom Watermark holiday homes set on lakes with names like Isis, Spring, Windrush and Summer, all with great views of the lakes, and loads of facilities. Lake Pochard provides spacious fully equipped accommodation in detached Scandinavian lodges, set along the lake edge, with a great cafe serving home cooked food and quality fishing on site. Lower Mill Estate, near the village of Somerford Keynes is a collection of luxury vacation homes set within a 550 acre private estate with eight lakes, two rivers, private spa and tons of wildlife. If you need some help with choosing a place to stay then the

Centre or download the walks off the website www.waterpark.org. This will help you get the most out of the area and really get amongst the landscape – head off down old railway lines, canal towpaths, country lanes, and lakeside paths. You can even take the dog – we just ask if you are near a lake to keep the dog on the lead as it can cause huge disturbance to the thousands of waterbirds living here, in particular at nesting time between March and August. Cycling is a great way to explore, as it’s so flat round here – to be safe, make sure you keep to the bridlepaths and designated cyclepaths and please give way to pedestrians. Hopefully this brief guide to the Cotswold Water Park has whet your appetite to come and explore – and we haven’t even mentioned the Nature Reserves, the country parks, the riverside walks at Lechlade, the peaceful villages... A Winning Combination Clive Burling is loving the look s regular readers will know I’m a fan of mixing things up a bit and I absolutely love working with bright colours. When Jane Saunders and her daughter Lucy told me about a new project they were working on I got quite excited. My input in the end was minimal as they already had a very clear vision of the look and feel of the new business they wanted to create. They told me that the “Cosmetic Boutique” would be a new concept, where ladies can receive beauty & aesthetic treatments and experience a styling service all under one roof. The idea of combining treatments alongside clothing came about when Jane and Lucy were running their last business, the successful ‘’Monday Boutique’’ in Cirencester and establishing their “House of Monday” clothing line. Lucy then trained with Nouveau Contour in Semi Permanent Make Up and together with her degree in fashion and Jane’s knowledge and previous experience in the Holistic field, it was a natural progression.

A

They found the ideal location for the new venture in Cheltenham’s idyllic Montpellier and have restored all four floors of a beautiful Regency terraced building, retaining all the original features but at the same time creating a feeling of light and space in the treatment rooms upstairs as well as the boutique in the basement. Lucy’s love of crystals and anything turquoise was the inspiration for the digitally created floor covering in the ground floor reception area and

“I rescued the letters from the old shop sign in Cirencester, stripped and gilded them with a copper finish and they are now leading the way to the new boutique.”

together with the cast iron Corinthian columns, creates an almost mystical atmosphere. I rescued the letters from the old shop sign in Cirencester, stripped and gilded them with a copper finish and they are now leading the way to the new boutique. Jane and Lucy found the stunning neon sign in London. It is the centrepiece of the ground floor and to me sums up the whole look and feel of this unique business. Fun, relaxing but with loads of creative energy. A winning combination for sure! The wisteria is out and the beautiful tones of this colour should be celebrated. The glory of this deep amethyst is that it works brilliantly with neutral colours and has a depth of colour that is regal with a sense of dignity and calm. No room is complete without fresh flowers and with both Iris (named after the greek Goddess who rode rainbows) and Delphinium in season, they will give you fabulously vibrant colour to instantly import – joyous and always exciting.

The Room Clinic Cotswold Style caught up with Agata Barcinska a leading Interior Designer who has recently moved to the Cotswolds Please tell us a bit more about your company, The Room Clinic and your background experience? I initially studied fine art and went into interior design after being inspired by my father's work in refurbishing. The Room Clinic began when I moved to the UK from my native Poland. I used to work in London’s, Chelsea Harbour Design Centre for a textile company when I noticed there is a market for unique and more individual projects. I thought I could harness my creative skills to help people create more imaginative spaces though I started by designing accessories, which led me towards residential interior design. Please tell us about your move to the Cotswolds/ Cheltenham? I followed my partner who moved to Cheltenham for personal reasons. Only having lived in London, I was a little bit apprehensive at the beginning but within a very short period I have met some really lovely people and discovered some amazing places.

Are there particular suppliers you use and why did you choose their services? After 10 years of working in the design industry I know where to source pieces according to my clients’ individual needs and their budget. I value high quality products and this is what I look for regardless of project spend. I also try to work with local artisans and upcoming artists as much as I can. I love to experiment with textures,

Left: Agata Barcinska

colours and new materials. The biggest inspiration in my life is… my life; I use travelling as my largest sourcing directory.

Please give us some details of projects you have recently completed? My last few projects were about redesigning residential spaces, which were lacking key pieces and colour coordination. The main thing in these briefs was to add some character and personalise the rooms. It was very enjoyable and creative to connect with the clients, give them something artistic and functional at the same time. What advice would you give to people who are thinking about updating their house? Simply go for it. The starting point is sometimes the hardest part. The key thing is to make the decision about setting off the process, finding someone you can trust and feel comfortable with, to talk about your ideal space.

What are the benefits of using an Interior Designer? For me it's about saving time and taking all the stress away. Interior design is not only about soft furnishings like cushions and curtains. It's about functionality and fluid space. Designers not only know how to put the room together in a technical way and using the best contractors but they can also redesign your space to make you use it in a new way.

Do you offer a full design service and are you happy to work on small projects such as sofa refurbishments etc? I offer full design and build service, styling and also sourcing service anywhere required. I do believe in authenticity and fun while creating something special so I am happy to do both as long as I find it interesting. Finding art, styling the feature wall or bringing back to life an old sofa can make a big a difference to the feeling of a room. My aim is always to create a ‘wow’ factor even on a smaller scale. Having worked as a visual merchandiser for fashion brands and collaborating with photographers on set designs this has showed me that interior design can be taken into a different level. I never say ‘no’ to getting involved in art experiments. The Room Clinic Tel: 07765 254 002 www.theroomclinic.com Email: info@theroomclinic.com

Through the Garden Gate Camilla Bassett-Smith is our Cheltenham based media horticulturalist, currently working as Producer on a brand new Channel 4 series called ‘Inside Out Homes’. This month, she invites you to a glorious garden celebrating its seriously capable creation….. botanically beautiful Bowood House and Gardens. Your historical horticultural host is none other than Lancelot Capability Brown, who credits this green and pleasant spot in Wiltshire as one of his best preserved landscapes. He was of course well paid for his services, with the 1st Earl of Shelburne parting with over £4,300 in return for the re-design of the Park in the 1760s. They certainly would have been the 'swinging sixties' for Capabilty's team not music and endless parties but the swing of the shovel and axe as earth moving on a mammoth scale took place, in particular to create a lake of over 30 acres! The water was to cover a small

L

hamlet and residents were required to move house to make way for the overflowing of the pond. Not the first time Cotswoldians have been forced to re-locate due to flooding, although in this situation they didn't have to deal with insurance claims and dehumidifiers,

having only a distant memory of their bricks and mortar as they lay beneath the grandest of lakes like an aristocratic Atlantis. The stamp of Capability is everywhere here, the borrowed landscape catching your eye like the most stunning of Turner's brush strokes. Thousands of trees were planted in clumps around the estate forming a huge belt to contain this botanical body and Lord Shelburne made it his business to obtain the latest seeds and trees to proudly display in his newly designed grounds. A bill from the time shows that twenty two Cedar of Lebanon cones were bought for a shilling each, whether these sprang forth into growth or not, we can only guess

but five such Cedars stand tall on the estate today and it is thought that these may be the fruits of this very order. No mountain was too high for this celebrated designer to climb, although one mound was higher than he liked and so naturally he called for it to be lowered and lowered it was, imagine a top being sliced off a boiled egg and instantly his view was improved. 300 years after the birth of Lancelot seems a fitting anniversary for Bowood to celebrate, with the creation of an exhibition in the house called 'Terrestrial Delights: Capabilty Brown & The Bowood Landscape’. The Orangery has replaced the sweet scents of citrus with the fragrances of Old Father time display case after display case filled with original cheques offering payment for the design, hand written letters from the 18th century, seed bills, plans of the park before and after the re-design and so much more. How wonderful that the

Landsdowne family, who have been in residence since 1754, have held onto so many priceless records and documents offering us this sneak preview into Bowood’s past and allowing the garden team at the estate to continue to plant according to Lancelot’s plans where appropriate. The Embroiderers’ Guild has also joined in swapping trowels for needles as they display their Capability inspired textiles as part of the exhibition. Back outside and special Capability Brown garden tours can be pre-booked promising to be fact-filled and fabulous! You can also book a separate tour to view the 4 acre walled garden with its 15 foot high walls, herbaceous borders, soft fruit and the most glorious wisteria with racemes falling like stalactites. If you’re lucky, there may still be time at the start of this month to wander amongst the rhododendrons in the Woodland Garden, before their blooms fade for another year.

“A bill from the time shows that twenty two Cedar of Lebanon cones were bought for a shilling each, whether these sprang forth into growth or not, we can only guess...” A little tired now after all of your walking? Taken in all the colours and scents and looking for somewhere to rest your weary head? Then luckily The Bowood Hotel Spa & Gold Resort is right on hand to offer you the height of luxury and relaxation. I spent a blissful evening there, enjoying fine dining and spa delights. If only Capability and his team could have experienced a similar wind down after all of their digging... although if they had, maybe this stunning landscape would never have been created. Colour for every Room Brewers Decorator Centre has just opened in Cheltenham, with an emphasis on choice and great service, you are sure to find the colour and finish for every room in your home. rewers have thousands of paint colours in all the main brands from Dulux and Crown to Farrow & Ball and Little Greene. So whether you are looking for paint for a fun and family friendly kitchen or a calm, sophisticated living space, you will find the colour at Brewers. If you can’t find an exact match for your furnishings then the staff at Brewers can mix it for you using the latest technology for colour matching – just bring a sample with you. When choosing your colour scheme consider how it will work with the rest of your interiors. Choosing complementary colours from a similar hue in each room will help to give the illusion of space and a cohesive harmonised feel across your whole home. To choose the basis of your colour scheme, think about the use of the rooms and the atmosphere you are trying to create. If you want a calm, relaxing feel for a living space or bedroom opt for layering co-ordinating soft shades across the walls, floors and furniture. If you prefer a more dramatic feel, go for dark blues and strong warm shades; combine them with light, bright whites and neutrals for a contrasting look or mix with soft complementary shades. Light is a very important consideration when thinking about redecorating your home. Light can dramatically affect the look of a colour and that’s why it is always recommended to buy a sample pot first. Try testing your chosen colour on some card or lining paper and position it in the room so you can see how it looks in natural light, shadow and artificial light. Small spaces and irregular shaped rooms can be a challenge. For irregular shaped rooms, try basing the colour scheme on a single hue. This will draw less attention to any awkward angles and make the space feel more unified. For small spaces or rooms without much natural light, cool light shades will help make your room feel bigger and brighter. Another creative way to use colour is to highlight areas of interest such as shelves,

B

alcoves or windowsills with your signature colour and then repeat this colour by introducing it in your soft furnishings, rugs or even picture frames. Instead of traditional white for woodwork such as skirting, picture rails and door frames, continue the wall colour from ceiling to floor to give an illusion of space. Alternatively, use a fun, contrasting colour such as black, in a monochrome inspired interior, or choose a complementary colour to your wallpaper creating a frame effect. There is a vast range of wallpaper designs from bold, luxurious patterns to retro inspired prints. In the showroom area of Brewers you’ll find thousands of wallpaper patterns in over two hundred books from all the leading brands, which you can ponder over in branch, sat at the book bar, or in the comfort of your home, using the pattern book loan service. If you are looking for more choice there is the showroom terminal where you can

browse over ten thousand patterns choosing by colour or design. Alternatively view wallpaperdirect.com at home and use the click and collect service to pick up your order from Brewers at your convenience. The showroom area is not just about wallpaper though, it is dedicated to help you realise your vision for your home. You have colour brush out boards from some of the leading brands in designer paint including Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Paint Library allowing you to visualise your colour scheme. The showroom terminal also gives you access to Brewers Home a great range of furniture, lighting, curtains, blinds, shutters and soft furnishings, many of which are exclusive to Brewers – everything to complete your home. Brewers also stock a whole host of wood treatments, specialist coatings, problem-solving paints, vast array of decorating accessories and more, in fact, everything you need for decorating. Jerry Weeks, Branch Manager, and his team have a wealth of experience and are always on hand to provide a friendly, personal service. They can help with all your decorating dilemmas and because Brewers are independent they can recommend the best product for the job, whether it is dealing with damp and mould or refreshing an exterior lime render. The Brewers Decorator Centre is located just off the A4019, there is plenty of parking at the branch and they offer a free delivery service, with no minimum order value, so you can get anything delivered to your home or work. Castaway COLLECTION

Accomplished chef and heartwarming character Rosemary Shrager has graced our screens for well over a decade. A frontrunner for television cookery, Rosemary is best known for dominating TV kitchens on programmes including Ladette to Lady, Soapstar Superchef and Chopping Block, along with countless cookery books and a Cookery School under her belt. Celebrity Columnist Ellie Mainwaring caught up with the chef, the nation has taken to their hearts. The Caribbean island of Grenada. It’s entirely self sufficient with everything one could need for food. You’d have a great time cooking! What item of jewellery or accessory would you take and why

Bracelets, I have lots of very thin gold bangles and like to wear six or so on my wrist when I go out for occasions. I don’t wear them from day to day in the kitchen so they make me feel extra special when I do wear them. I love the clinking sound they make. You can take the entire works of one musician to your Castaway destination.

A toss-up between Paul Simon and Neil Diamond. Together they have provided a soundtrack throughout my life and their songs would bring back fond memories and past times. Many of their tracks are joyous and I’d be able to sing along to them – something I’d imagine would be very important for keeping spirits up when alone on an island. My West Highland Terrier Haggis who sadly is now no longer with us. I would be able to talk to her and she’d be my friend. What pet would you take?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil and chilli to give a punch of seasoning to my food. I’d be living on a What would be your luxury item?

diet of fish and foliage, so would crave strong flavours.

PHOTO: CHRISTIAN BARNETT

Where in the world would you choose to be castaway to and why?

Name one possession you would take and one to leave behind for a loved one?

I’d take my walking stick, which would prove very useful on a desert island. You could use the stick for a great many things – catching fish, reaching things from high trees, a post to rest things on to keep them out of the sand – no end of uses. I’d leave behind my paintings as they represent memories. I would leave to the team at my Cookery School the painting of the cookery school, which means more than anything else in the world. Doctor Zhivago, the original with Omar Shariff. I absolutely adore the spectacle and its music. Films today just aren’t made like that. It’s a long epic film and I could completely immerse myself in the glorious cinematic scenes. What movie would you take?

What would be your last supper before departing?

A generous helping of Chicken and Potato Pie followed by a scrumptious pudding of Californian Prune Tart. I’d be really nervous of the trials that lay ahead of me and this would be the ultimate comfort food. You can take one celebrity companion, dead or alive. Who will it be?

My great friend Linda

Robson. We were together in the jungle of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Linda always has a great humour and would keep us smiling as well as being a gutsy lady. What would be the chosen beauty item you would take?

They say you choose your face or your bottom and I chose my face. I’d take my face cream and serum. It’s the most important thing I do – morning and night. If you had a superpower, what would it be and why?

I’d super power me off the island so that I could be reunited with my family! Passionate about produce, Rosemary is an ambassador for California Prunes. www.californiaprunes.co.uk

Style Culture

Cotswolds Culture Diamonds are the Queen’s Best Friend Susan Blanchfield explores the relevance of our Monarch’s collection of precious stones Diamonds. Their glittering significance can ignite the most complex of emotions in us as the ongoing squabble over the ownership of the famous Koh-I-Noor diamond, considered by India to be an integral part of their history and culture demonstrates. This decades old, bitter debate over the ownership of a jewel that was given to Queen Victoria by the last ruler of the Sikhs, demonstrates that the powerful currency of symbolic value is often more significant than the value of the object in question. Diamonds play a significant part of the Queen’s reign. As the planets most photographed and relentlessly public figure, she understands the power of symbolic attire and as a result, the dazzling jewels worn by her, are always carefully considered choice. Not for her the last minute frantic, rooting, scramble for a sparkly number to sling on five minutes before a State dinner for a couple of hundred. The Queen’s selection will be a thoughtful and carefully researched process; whether the occasion calls for a simple broach, or a powerfully radiant ensemble to convey a subtle, yet powerful message to her onlookers. For centuries, diamonds, the most expensive, opulent jewel, have been worn by British monarchs to create a regal aura and sense of majesty, reflecting an intensely hierarchical and status-conscious society. The word ‘diamond’ derives from the Greek “adamas”, meaning unconquerable “either by fire or by blows”; qualities that every monarch strove to be associated with. At the beginnings of empire, as diamonds became more plentiful, India and South Africa became centres of trade and a fascination with

their brilliance and significance began. Ever engaged with the idea of symbolising authority, our Queen’s forebearers wore spectacular pieces, often crafted for an occasion, as a display of political strength, wealth and earthly power. In a relatively benign modern age, where the notion of empire is fast fading and trade, migration and the enlightened adoption of cultural and religious traditions is widespread, our Queen has drawn lessons from her ancestors; she still uses her jewels as part of her armory but in a more unifying way and with a sartorial nod to the past. During the many transitional processes that have taken place throughout her long reign, she has judiciously sported historically appropriate rocks to show respect for former colonies as well as honouring Britain’s history with other countries. There are countless examples of her utilising the power of jewels’ diplomatic significance too; for example, wearing the Fringe Brooch; a gift from the Sultan of Turkey to Queen Victoria for Britain’s help in the Crimean War, at the State Banquet for the President of Turkey. Or during her last visit to South Africa, where she wore the 21 diamond necklace and bracelet given to her by the South African government as a 21st birthday gift. In keeping with the British requirement for occasion and tradition, she still travels to and from each state opening of Parliament in the 1,333 brilliant-cut

stone Diamond Diadem, originally made for George IV and adorned with a rose, thistle and two shamrocks celebrating the 1707 Act of Union. The Queen’s role is by and large, symbolic; she is unable to voice an opinion in public and to her audience, she is an impenetrably private individual who, in a paradox, is also entirely familiar. We never know what she is thinking and in an age of intense media scrutiny, her use of multifaceted gems to convey messages becomes more relevant in our diplomatic age. As Britain’s longest serving Monarch, she understands that although history can be shared between countries, events rarely run smoothly, and the past is more often than not a bumpy ride of exploitation and imperial force majeure. Her diplomatic experience and counsel will prove vital when it comes to resolving the sensitive issue of the Koh-I-Noor once and for all. As senior curator for the royal collection, Caroline de Guitaut remarks; “Diamonds are a potent symbol of virtue, endurance and longevity, making them an extremely suitable emblem for the woman who is our Queen.” In a very material sense, her reign has been glittering. Happy 90th Birthday your Majesty! Susan Blanchfield is a Patron and Trustee of Cheltenham Festivals; she is a postgraduate doctoral researcher at the University of Gloucestershire and has a life long passion for the Arts in Education. Cotswoldia Angela Chancellor’s Cautionary Tale… he end of the school year is nigh and with it comes the annual end of school year rituals. For some it will be a sports day, for others the school picnic but surely the fairest finale of them all is the school ball. Being of a generation still nursed through childhood with a healthy diet of fairy tales, balls for me always invoke dreamy notions of Cinderella. Dressed in your best frock and with hopefully a pair of perfect Jimmy Choos, with your prince firmly in your sights or even on your arm and with any luck you will be arriving in a Porsche not a pumpkin. Fairy tales being what they are though, there has to always be a cautionary element to any story. So, for all you Cinderella's out there, this is a timely reminder that the Anastasia's and Drizella's will of course also be there. This being a thoroughly modern ball, you and your prince may have been swaying enchantedly at last year’s ball but alas this year you may likely have to face the music sans beau, who has been snapped away by one of the evil sisters and you can most likely rely on her having absolutely no intention of not rubbing it in your face. Why would she, when all year long she has been ever-present pitch side, come rain or shine, to cheer her beloved little

T

darlings with deafening enthusiasm; missing not a single opportunity to shrilly and definitely never subtly chastise any error or missed opportunity, no matter how small, might have been made by yours and god forbid one of yours might gain yet another point towards the winning score. This is not about winning for the team this is about her win and hers alone. But take comfort, the evil sister may have shredded your dress and stamped all over your dreams but the fairy godmother will not give her the time of day and she will be far too busy snarking to notice that what friends she has, flinch at her missives and secretly can't wait to be relieved of her tyranny and jump ship to your side of the party. Adorned in all her finery, she may be wearing the most extravagant gown but no amount of 'designer' will create the glow of being surrounded by a gaggle of jolly good friends.

“So, for all you Cinderella's out there, this is a timely reminder that the Anastasia's and Drizella's will of course also be there.”

At the picnic she will be far too busy flitting about, perpetually glancing over your shoulder, seeking out the parents whom she deems most shiny, no doubt hoping a little lustre might rub off on her. Well she obviously jolly well needs it because no amount of well placed charm will hide the shrieking shrew she is when the chips are down and the dice have not rolled in her favour. Let her flutter about, she's missed the point. She may have supped her way through countless canapés and glasses of free Champagne but she will provide much mirth to you and yours along the way and she most definitely won’t be at the after party and everybody knows that that's the only one that really counts. Retiring early and having dragged her trophy, previously known as your handsome prince, back to her lair, spare a moment of sympathy for him despite his flaws, as she will behind closed doors and stripped of all her purpose, no doubt turn back into the crow she truly is. Enough of the cautionary tales for this month, my work is done, the sun is shining and the garden is beckoning and there may yet be time for a few glasses of delicious Pimms before bedtime. Sweet dreams my darlings and I hope to see you at the ball...

She has visited Canada to mark other landmark events such as in 1967 for Canada’s 100th anniversary and the 1976 Olympic Games in the French Canadian capital, Montreal. She officially opened the Games, which Princess Anne was competing in as a member of the British equestrian team. In 1977 she visited for her Silver Jubilee, in 1978 for the Commonwealth Games, in 1992 to mark the 125th anniversary of Confederation and the 40th anniversary of her accession to the throne and in 2002

for the Golden Jubilee. It is not surprising that the Queen has visited Canada on so many occasions as it is a country of superlatives and together with its sheer scale gives it a most intriguing and formidable quality. Canada is the size of a continent stretching from its boundary with Alaska to the most remote wilderness of North America and is home to a vast array of natural beauty and amazing diversity from unspoilt, wildlife wilderness to history-rich centres of culture and cuisine and activity-laden mountains and coastline. Vancouver Island offers a vast array of fun in both the city and great outdoors with nature on its doorstep where you can adventure in the mountains in the morning and hit the beach in the afternoon. A highlight of a visit to Canada is a Calgary Stampede Indian Princes waves at spectators at the Canada Day Parade in Banff, Alberta

sighting of the famous grizzly brown bear in its natural habitat and a unique way to do this is to travel inland to the depths of the wilderness by light aircraft to British Colombia’s Great Bear Rainforest. The majestic Great Canadian Rockies offer some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet with snow-capped mountain peaks, virgin forests, lush alpine meadows, towering waterfalls and plummeting canyons bejewelled with swirling rivers that glitter into turquoise lakes below. The Rockies offer some of the world’s best climbing, hiking, biking, riding, paddling, fishing and skiing and this is where we headed for our family holiday. We drove to sparkling Lake Louise and past stunning Victoria Glacier to Banff, the pretty capital of the Rockies for some exhilarating exploration. We soared into the

the body with a wonderful soak in the hot mineral springs followed by a delicious feast in Wild Bill’s saloon! Having made a detour for some dinosaur fossil hunting, we then headed to Calgary for the July cowboy extravaganza heralded ‘The Greatest

The event is one of the largest rodeos in the world, with shows, wagon racing and parades and was a unique and wonderful spectacle polar opposite from the dazzling wilderness of the Rockies. We plan to visit multiple times and fit in a six week royal tour like the Queen to soak up more of Canada’s wonderful treasures, but the wild stories and memories of the mountain scenery, fabulous wildlife, delicious food and hospitable Canadians will last us a lifetime. Somewhere for the Weekend?

It’s over 25 years since Glasgow was named as the European City of Culture, yet the city is bursting with more culture now than every before. In fact National Geographic has named it one of the top 20 best places to visit in the world for 2016. This buzzy destination is home to an outstanding collection of museums and galleries (mostly free entry), a worldclass music scene and a fascinating mix of historic and contemporary architecture. Mrs & Mr Jones discovered all this, alongside fabulous shopping, hotels and restaurants. Mr Jones found the city streets easy to negotiate as they are laid out on a grid system, reminding him of New York. Also similar are the brownstone buildings and the variety of vibrant neighbourhoods waiting to be explored. Each neighbourhood has its own character, such as historic Merchant City and the fashionable and bohemian West End. Mrs Jones was very taken with the hip neighbourhood of Finnieston, with its array of cool eateries and the Hidden Lane, a vibrant community of artists and musicians.

Getting Around The City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus is a great way to get around the city (citysightseeingglasgow.co.uk). There are 21 stops covering the main points of interest. It takes 1 hour 20 minutes to do 60 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

the whole loop, accompanied by live or recorded commentary. While Mrs Jones loved the bus as it saved her from sore feet, Mr Jones found it slightly irritating that it only moves in one direction around the city. He came to the conclusion you have to plan your sightseeing carefully around the loop. If you fancy stepping out of the city, regular trains will take you to the shores of Loch Lomond in less than an hour from Glasgow Queen Street.

Architecture This year, Glasgow is celebrating Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design with a year-

round programme of events. There are plenty of fascinating buildings to look out for while exploring the city, from the Victorian grandeur of the City Chambers to the Art Nouveau of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (see spotlight on Mackintosh). Mr Jones persuaded Mrs Jones away from the shops to have a look at the cathedral. On the hill above it, they found the impressive sight of the Necropolis. This Victorian cemetery is grand on a Parisian scale, filled with impressive tombs and mausoleums. Mrs Jones would never have imagined she could spend a pleasurable hour wandering around the gravestones. Contemporary structures down on the River Clyde include the Norman Foster

The Riverside Museum

Museums Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum is definitely worth a visit. It’s not only an architectural masterpiece but also houses an outstanding collection of historic objects and artworks, including Dali’s iconic Christ of St John of the Cross. On Glasgow Green, the People’s Palace tells the story of the city from the late 18th century onwards. Stop for a coffee in the café located in the Winter Gardens – a tropical glasshouse. Mrs Jones enjoyed visiting the Tenement House (National Trust), giving her a glimpse back into the life of Miss Toward who lived in a four-room apartment there in the early 20th century. Mr Jones’ favourite was the Riverside Museum, declaring it the best transport museum he’d ever visited. Behind it, a Tall Ship is moored and available to explore.

Art Attack Glasgow is a city stuffed full of art. See spotlight on Mackintosh for more about his work. The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) hosts regular exhibitions alongside its permanent collection. If you like contemporary art, then check out the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Tramway and Trongate 103.

Lovers of street art can download the City Centre Mural Trail and enjoy seeking out some amazing graffiti. Mrs Jones loved the homage to famous Glaswegians painted onto the hoarding surrounding the now derelict Clutha Bar. The award-winning Burrell Collection, is a short distance out of the city, set in Pollok Country Park. It is one of the greatest collections ever assembled by just one person and includes works by Cezanne, Degas and Rodin.

Splurge The award-winning Gannet (thegannetgla.com), in the hip district of Finnieston, serves up modern Scottish cuisine foraged from the countryside or sourced from the rich coastline. Mrs Jones loved her choice of wild garlic ravioli and crispy-skinned sea trout. During lunchtime and early evening, small plates offer an economical and delicately sized portion of their a la carte equivalent.

Shopping Mr Jones hadn’t cottoned on to the fact that Glasgow is one of the best places to shop in the UK. Mrs Jones was in her element exploring the ‘style mile’, a whole square mile of shopping, cafes and restaurants in the heart of the city. You’ll find everything from high street to designer names in Princes Square, Buchanan Street, the Buchanan Galleries and St Enoch Centre. Mrs Jones’ favourite was Argyle Arcade, a small, yet perfectly formed, arcade full of jewellery shops. It was here she managed to persuade Mr Jones to buy her a small but expensive memento of their trip. Out of the centre, vintage lovers should look out for Vintage Guru (vintageguru.co.uk) and Starry Starry Night (starrystarrynightvintage.co.uk).

Eating Glasgow has developed a fantastic foodie scene. Whether you’re looking for modern Scottish or the freshest fish from nearby lochs, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Mrs & Mr Jones quickly discovered that Glasgow is the curry capital of Britain.

Mid Range Mother India (motherindia.co.uk) is one of the best Indian restaurants in the city. Dishes include smoked lamb with mushrooms and fennel, spiced haddock and the rich, but delicious, butter chicken. Seafood lovers will enjoy Crabshakk (crabshakk.com). Afternoon tea aficionados should visit the Mackintosh-designed Willow Tea Rooms (willowtearooms.co.uk), see Spotlight on Mackintosh.

Budget The 78 is a superb vegan restaurant with a small but freshly cooked menu (the78cafebar.com). Soba Bar & Kitchen offers a taste of pan-Asian street food with an economical set menu for lunch (barsoba.co.uk). >>> COTSWOLD STYLE JUNE 2016 61

Spotlight on...

Mackintosh

Just as Gaudi is associated with Barcelona, Charles Rennie Mackintosh is integral to the cityscape of Glasgow. A leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement, his innovative works can be seen throughout the city. The best place to begin following in the footsteps of Mackintosh, is to book a tour at the Glasgow School of Art. To get a real insight into the evolving architectural style of Mackintosh, the Glasgow School of

Art is considered to be his masterpiece. Due to the devastating fire in 2014, it’s not possible to enter into the original building, but you can visit the Window on Mackintosh visitor centre and take a guided tour of the exterior (gsa.ac.uk/visitgsa/tours). Famous alumni include Peter Capaldi and Robbie Coltrane. The Hunterian Art Gallery and Mackintosh House at the University of Glasgow, houses one of the most important collections of Mackintosh and his wife, the artist Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (gla.ac.uk/hunterian). You can look round the interior of their home,

which has been painstakingly recreated. Kelvingrove Art Gallery is home to the ‘Mackintosh and the Glasgow Style Gallery’ showcasing the largest permanent display of work in the world by the key names of the movement (glasgowlife.org.uk/ museums). The Lighthouse was once the Glasgow Herald newspaper building and is now the Centre for Design and Architecture. The Mackintosh Interpretation Centre contains original objects and the Mackintosh Tower has a magnificent spiral staircase providing fabulous views over the city. With all that sightseeing, it must be time to take a breather. The original Willow Tea Rooms on Sauchiehall Street was designed by Mackintosh in 1903 (willowtearooms.co.uk). Not only did he design the interior and exterior for its then owner, but he was also commissioned to design the cutlery and staff uniforms. Here is your chance to spoil yourself with afternoon tea whilst soaking up the beautiful Mackintosh surroundings.

Mind, Body & Soul We discover some of the new, sensational treatments or products available in the Cotswolds and surrounding areas to recuperate your mind, body and soul ELEMIS BIOTEC AT CAVENDISH HOUSE, CHELTENHAM by Sandra Paul Right now, I’m in a mad panic to get myself ‘ready’ to reveal myself for summer. It is such an effort when you are my age. Not only is it about making sure I’ve actually shaved and tanned my legs. After months of horrible weather inflicting rain and wind on my face, I have had to face the fact a lick of self-tanner will not rejuvenate let alone restore a youthful visage! Elemis, is a fantastic brand that is known for its innovative skincare products. It has just launched a new range of BIOTEC treatments designed to remedy specific problem areas resulting from the aging process and lifestyle challenges such as stress, lack of sleep and living life to the ‘max’. The BIOTEC skincare range claims to fuse groundbreaking technology, where the best of science and the best of nature are harnessed for extraordinary results. The skincare range is used alongside 8 particular facials using the BIOTEC machine. These highly charged facial treatments target specific skin needs revealing a radiant complexion and a youthful glow. All the Elemis therapists are highly trained in particular techniques to help maximize the use of the products and the technology. Before any BIOTEC facial treatment Emily, my therapist, explained that she needed to conduct a facial assessment report that would highlight areas of concern requiring attention. This would enable her to recommend a specific treatment tailored specifically for me, which would deal specifically with the problem. I have spent years neglecting to put sun cream on my face believing that my makeup provided a thick enough barrier to prevent sun damage. However, in recent years I am ‘blotch-city’ and it is hard to see where one ‘freckle’ as I like to call these brown patches, ends, and another begins! Emily suggested the Elemis BIOTEC anti-pigment brightener treatment, which

68 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

would last 60 minutes and took place in the Elemis Treatment room at Cavendish House. She began by cleansing my eyes and lips with Elemis White Flowers make-up Remover and Pro-Collagen Cleansing balm, a heavenly scented non-greasy balm that gently eliminated the impurities and dirt from my face. Then she applied the White Brightening Even Tone Cleanser, the White Brightening Tone Lotion before beginning the Ultrasonic Peeling. I have never undergone a ‘peeling’ or microdermabrasion procedure. The very sound of the word ‘peeling’ panics me but Emily explained that the benefits of this gentle scrape included exfoliation, removing impurities, providing a deep cleanse and minimizing pigmentation. It is far less abrasive than microdermabrasion. The ultrasonic peeling helps remove the top layer of skin cells and encourages cell renewal but it is far less aggressive that microdermabrasion. Ultrasound causes rapid vibrations drawing out impurities, deep cleansing and gently exfoliating surface impurities and pigmentation and does not hurt at all. Another effect is that it promotes collagen production, minimizing the appearance of fine lines. Emily used a range of the Brightening

products including the BIOTEC Brightening Activator and the Hydra Gel Soothing Eye mask and White Brightening Even Tone Peel Off mask. The BIOTEC Brightening Activator is smeared thickly over the face while the Blue Light therapy – another new innovation by Elemis - was used. The benefits, Emily explained, included soothing and calming any redness. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory. The skin consultation that took place earlier, allowed me to do a proper ‘before’ and ‘after’ review of my face following the treatment. And I was so impressed that I booked in for further treatments and bought the Advanced Brightening Even Tone Serum. My dark spots and areas of pigmentation were minimized and my skin was glowing, looking and feeling so fresh and clear. Emily advised that continuing the treatment at home with the serum would help prevent dark areas popping up again. A few weeks on and the brightness is still visible and has not lapsed back to my original grey, patchy face and I am convinced that giving BIOTEC another go will continue the good work. For further information, visit the Elemis counter at Cavendish House in Cheltenham.

Style Health WHY YOU SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT THE SUGAR CRISIS People often think that an unhealthy diet mainly contains high quantities of fat. But one of the main ingredients causing health issues in the UK population at the moment is sugar. You might think there’s no harm in a sugary treat or two but do you know the maximum amount of sugar you should be consuming? With the average person consuming at least twice as much sugar as they should be doing, there are major health ramifications looming. How much sugar should I be eating? Maximum recommended sugar consumption varies by age but the key thing is that, at every age range, people are eating far too much - around 60g a day, which is two times the suggested limit for adults and three times the suggested limit for under sixes. Four to six-year-olds should be eating a maximum of 19g a day, roughly five sugar cubes. Seven to ten-year-olds should be eating a maximum of 24g a day, which is roughly six sugar cubes. From the age of eleven onwards you should be consuming a maximum of 30g a day, or seven sugar cubes - bear that in mind if you like two sugars in your coffee. Sugar is added to a lot of unexpected products You probably won’t be surprised to know that there is a lot of sugar in foods like cake or chocolate but did you realise sugar is added to many foods; low-fat diet foods in particular to improve the flavour and the texture? It is also present in sauces such as ketchup and salad cream (which are more than one fifth sugar), cereal bars (which are more than a third sugar) and even in baby foods, meaning that young children are gaining a sweet tooth at a very early age. The worst culprit for sugar content across all ages is the ordinary fizzy drink. A can of cola has around 36g of sugar, more than the recommended daily limit for an adult. These make up around 30% of the sugar in an average child’s diet. The combination of sugar and the drink’s acidic properties means that they are very likely to decay the teeth. You may also have seen the recent articles about the quantities of sugar hiding in high-street coffee chains, with many of them having over the daily limit of sugar in a single

Looking for a healthy sugar-free snack? IN THE NOOD A new health food snack with a twist as it lets you customise and roll your own energy ball A brand new health food snack, called In the Nood has launched for summer. The brains behind the product are Alex and Sam Lai, a husband and wife team from Winchcombe, Gloucestershire who have created their 'roll your own energy ball' to stop those mid-week, mid-afternoon cravings and add a healthy dose of the good stuff, instead of the usual sweet treats. The packs have no added sugar making them a great addition to a healthy eating regimen. Raw, Vegan, Paleo and gluten free, In the Nood is the perfect roll-grab-and-go snack that is tasty and guilt-free. They come in a pack with fully mixed

cup - some of them up to 99g in a single serving! You’d be better off drinking your tea and coffee without sugar or syrups. Sugar is an addictive substance Having a ‘sweet tooth’ is real - sugar is an addictive substance (it has been found that cocaine-addicted rats will choose sugar over cocaine in the vast majority of cases) and will drive you to snack more, especially on sugary foods. In many cases, if dieters followed a balanced no-added-sugar diet they would be more successful. Sugars are also snuck into foods under other names; dextrose, corn syrup, sucrose, fructose, glucose, agave nectar, molasses and corn sweetener are all sugar. Another source of sugar that you might not have considered is honey - though this ‘natural’ sugar has some nutritional benefits that are lacking from refined sugar, honey can still cause tooth decay and obesity if not eaten in moderation. The risks of excessive sugar consumption Eating too much sugar can lead to a whole host of problems. We’re well aware of tooth decay, where the bacteria in your mouth feed off of the sugar, multiplying and excreting enamel-dissolving acid. But we often fail to remember that

dates, coconut, cacao and other amazing ingredients so you can roll your own energy ball and are just full of good stuff such as antioxidants, fibre and minerals and no added nasties. One ball is a 25g serving, coming in at about 166 Kcal and you can create 7 x 25g balls per pack. They come in three flavours: Orange and Cacao, Simpy Cacao, and Crunchy Cacao. Packs can be bought online for £7.99 at www.inthenood.com

sugar consumption can cause other health issues such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and visceral fat buildup, which can cause heart disease and is linked to some cancers. Three quarters of adults have had a tooth extracted at some point and a fifth have full or partial dentures; if sugar consumption continues to rise, that number could become far higher. What you can do The most obvious advice to follow is to reduce sugar consumption for you and your family - not being raised with a sweet tooth will help children make healthier food choices in the long run. You can also protect your teeth and gums from decay by brushing your teeth thoroughly twice a day, flossing and chewing sugar-free gum between meals to help kill some of the bacteria in your mouth. If you have other concerns about sugar, or about your dental health in general, speak to your dentist. They should be able to offer you tailored advice for your and your family’s care. top makes a very exciting outfit and at £36, the scoop split midi dress is a fabulous ‘LBD’ to have in your wardrobe, where it can be played up or down with accessories. The prettiest dress of the ‘toppers’ collection has to be the blue laced detailed skater dress. The lace is of good quality with a luxurious feel. Having not yet succumbed to a jumpsuit (and in all honesty, not really sure whether I want one!) the one I like the most is this halter jumpsuit. It’s very classy yet at the same time uber sexy. Last but not least, the jacket to go over everything, to dress up or down, is the divine petit pin stripe blazer. My very favourite brand this season has to be ‘Sandro’ found in Selfridges in Birmingham. Beautiful feminine pieces working alongside suede jackets, fabulous red leather and luxurious knits and stunning working pieces to grace anyone’s wardrobe. Whilst there, take a look at Maje, a reasonably priced designer brand found next to Sandro. I especially loved the beaded evening dresses. This season, I personally have tried to be resourceful, spending a whole day in my dressing room with the talented seamstress/dress designer Tracy Sarmis. Taking off handfuls of clothes from years gone by, Tracy is setting about my new wardrobe as we speak. And I am so excited. Watch this Space! www.topshop.com

WESTMINSTER IN THE COTSWOLDS Emma Logan has asked the county’s MPs to inform Cotswold Style readers what they have be doing to represent their constituencies both locally and from Westminster. This month they discuss the EU Referendum Vote, which takes place on 23rd June.

Neil Carmichael

NEIL CARMICHAEL, MP FOR STROUD May saw elections locally – all seats for Stroud District Council were contested and the relatively new position of Police and Crime Commissioner was also contested. It is a sign of a secure democracy when so many candidates from a wide range of political and independent positions seek election so, to them all, thank you for giving so much of your time to this vital civic activity. The results were more in keeping with ‘steady as she goes’ than any spectacular about turn. Martin Surl was re-elected as Police and Crime Commissioner, reflecting the advantage incumbency brings and also the instinct of many electors to be in favour of independence in dealing with law and justice. Congratulations to Martin. Stroud District Council has a similar political balance to the proceeding one with some ‘churn’ coming from the impact of boundary reviews. Normally, 84 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

the governing party takes a battering in elections during a parliamentary session but this year, Conservatives remain comfortably the largest party. Again, congratulations to all winners from all parties. To defeated councillors, thanks for all you have done for your communities; being elected to any body is a huge responsibility and is much more than just a political position. Reform of local government is still on the agenda so it will be interesting to see how the potential devolution of more powers to Gloucestershire will be handled. Such an enormous transfer of decision making from government departments and agencies to local people must be accompanied by appropriately accountable and transparent mechanisms so ambition, courage, vision and rigour will all need to be the hallmarks of the final proposals if they are to be successful. More immediately, the referendum to decide on our membership of the European Union looms large. This will be the most important decision we make through the ballot box for some decades to come. It is nothing less than the fate of our nation being in our hands; the clear choice is between more prosperity, safety and international influence through continued membership, or isolation, disengagement and loss of trade if we leave. Neil Carmichael is the Member of Parliament for Stroud and Chair of the Education Select Committee. Contact Neil at neil.carmichael.mp @parliament.uk or his constituency office on 01453 751 572.

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown

GEOFFREY CLIFTON-BROWN, MP FOR COTSWOLDS On 23rd June we will go to the polls to decide whether Britain’s future lies inside or outside the EU. I passionately believe we should vote to leave, that outside the EU we could be a more dynamic trading nation, making our deals all over the world with our companies free from burdensome regulation and I have written about my reasons why in this column before. Despite what you might hear on your television or from the Government there is no right or wrong answer to this question, this is about deciding what sort of Britain you would like us to be in the future: a Britain that is committed to EU membership and everything that brings with it or a Britain that seeks to go its own way. There is no certainty of stability, or GDP, or growth whether we remain or we leave, despite what the Government are saying, a vote to stay in the EU is not a vote for the status quo. The EU is still blighted by the Eurozone debt crisis, which will become headline news again when Greece’s next repayments are due next month. The EU itself could cease to exist as an entity, particularly as there appears to be a growing political frustration across the continent with Europe’s institutions. There is also an acute crisis of migration affecting Europe that shows no sign of abating. The EU has proven itself incapable of coming up with a

27/05/2016

08:11

Page 85

Style Politics coherent response to waves of migration from North Africa and this situation is already causing huge destabilisation to some European countries, with the potential to undermine Europe politically and economically. Agriculture is a particular concern raised by those hesitant for us to leave, citing the levels of subsidy our farmers currently receive from Europe but to me this is a red herring. In 2014 the UK contributed £4.6 billion to the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy programme and yet received only £2.9 billion of that back, meaning a net loss of £1.7 billion pounds, our area per hectare payments were also lower in the UK than the EU average. I feel that by leaving we can free our businesses from burdensome EU regulation and repatriate sovereignty over our laws back to our national Parliament. In governing any country there are few right or wrong answers and no issue is usually simple but fundamentally I believe that the power to make these decisions must rest with the people of the UK and their government. However you choose to vote on June 23rd this is a once in a generation opportunity to make your voice heard in deciding our country’s destiny and I would urge you all to stand up and be counted. www.geoffreycliftonbrown.co.uk

Alex Chalk

ALEX CHALK, MP FOR CHELTENHAM My views on the EU come down to a tussle between head and heart. My heart says leave. On the issue of sovereignty I have long deplored the steady erosion of British powers. Large areas of our lives are now subject to laws that in practice we cannot change.

They are devised by an EU Commission we did not elect and enforced by a European Court which even our most senior judges cannot overrule. So my heart wants my children to grow up in a free country where they can elect people who actually have the power to change things, and kick them out when they have failed. But my head tells me it’s not that simple. First, the economy. Brexit will likely lead to a tortuous renegotiation of our trading relationship with the EU. Scorned Eurocrats can be expected to give no quarter; they’ll want to make Brexit as painful as possible. And how long would it all take? Canada’s deal took seven years. Throughout this delay, jobs and investment in Gloucestershire would be put at risk by uncertainty as global businesses weigh up whether to choose the UK as a place to invest. That’s instability we cannot afford. Second, immigration. I doubt we would be any better off. Take Norway, which is outside the EU. Norway has access to the single market, but the price has been accepting all its rules, including paying contributions and allowing free movement of people. Switzerland too, also outside the EU, has higher levels of net EU migration per head than we do. So it’s unlikely it would make very much difference to immigration either. Third, constitutional instability. Brexit would almost certainly lead to a second referendum on Scottish independence. For those of us who believe passionately in the integrity of our United Kingdom, a country that is a force in the world and continues to carry influence, not least through its permanent membership of the UN Security Council, this would be a disaster. Fourth, security. Our friends across the world, from the US to Australia to New Zealand (who share intelligence with us by the way) are clamouring for us to stay. The one leader who would be guaranteed to cheer Brexit is Putin. Let me be clear: I have no love for Brussels. I only care about what is right for our country. But after careful thought my conclusion is that the risks to jobs, security, and the integrity of our United Kingdom are just too great. On balance, I think we need to hold our nose and stay. www.alexchalk.com

Laurence Robertson

LAURENCE ROBERTSON, MP FOR TEWKESBURY I am campaigning and voting to come out of the European Union (EU) for four basic reasons. First, I want the UK to make all its own laws. We have 650 MPs and thousands of councillors, directly elected by the British people to do so and that provides a direct, democratic link between those who make the rules and those affected by them. The EU does not have this democratic accountability about it. Secondly, I want us to control our own borders. With world terrorism on the increase, I believe it's important for us to do so. Also, immigration to this country is running at an unsustainable level. It's not all from the EU but a lot of it is and we must be in a position to control it Thirdly, I want us to stop sending billions of pounds of hard-working taxpayers' money to the EU, when that money would be better spent in our own country on hospitals, schools, the police and social services. And fourthly, I want us to be able to make our own trade arrangements with countries across the world, which we currently cannot do due to our EU membership. Most countries in the world enjoy the freedoms, which I am calling for and on 23rd June we can rediscover our pride and re-establish our sovereign democracy by voting to leave the EU. It's the chance of a lifetime and I hope that people will not miss it. As ever, if constituents would like to contact me about anything they can reach me on laurence.robertson.mp @parliament.uk or at the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA. COTSWOLD STYLE JUNE 2016 85

EXPLA N THE MARKET The Engineering Explosion Explain The Market’s Guy Shone, looks at some success stories taking place in The Cotswolds British engineering is booming and Cotswold companies are playing an increasingly leading role. The UK engineering industry generates over £400 billion for our economy – that’s over a quarter of our total GDP. It’s a success story that continues to excite city analysts and investors – but to the wider public these firms are often less well known. The names might be less recognisable than high street brands but so often these hi-tech firms do the business basics extremely well. Many are cash rich, enjoy strong overseas exports and retain loyal and long-serving workers. Whether it is materials, machinery or hitech systems – some of the biggest and best examples are thriving right here in the Cotswolds. This month I was invited to look behind the scenes at one the top UK firms based in Gloucestershire. Renishaw PLC is one of the world’s leading producers of 3D printing technology. The person leading much of this work is their senior engineer Lucy Ackland. Lucy showed me around Renishaw’s hi-tech innovation centre nestling among the idyllic countryside near Wotton-under-Edge. She also shared her own story of starting a career in engineering. Rather than business school or university Lucy opted to begin her career as an apprentice. In 2014, Lucy was awarded the Women’s Engineering Society Prize. She is now one of the UK’s top engineers in charge of 3D printing projects. Lucy explained how engineers now come in all shapes and sizes. “We take a wide range of people – apprentices and graduates, women and men and even people with experience from other careers. The Cotswolds is a fantastic place to work and from here we export the best in hi-tech engineering to countries all over the world.” 3D printing is a topic that has certainly captured the public’s imagination - but to be honest I used to imagine a giant, magical 86 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

version of the printer in the office or home study. Lucy explained how 3D printing is actually more about a new way of thinking that is transforming production lines.” “Normally you would start with a raw material and then shape it into a product – but 3D printing is the opposite – the machine creates the object from scratch.” It’s an approach experts describe as ‘additive manufacturing’, which rapidly builds objects into any shape imaginable. Across the UK right now these machines are busy creating parts for fighter jets, formula one racing cars, artificial limbs and even false teeth! Lucy’s career serves as a useful example with so many UK engineering firms aiming to boost recruitment to help our firms meet a big rise in global demand. It’s a problem caused by commercial success. Demand for hi-tech engineering products is now so great that economists predict almost 200,000 new recruits will be needed over the next 5 years to meet demand. Neil Carmichael, MP for Stroud is clear on the importance of engineering to the local area, “Stroud District has been a powerhouse of manufacturing and engineering for hundreds of years – inventing and developing many of the products we nowadays take for granted. It’s a real success story and I am determined, both through my work as Chairman of the Education Select Committee, and as the Founder of FESTOMANE, the Stroud Festival of Manufacturing and Engineering, to promote opportunities for young people in our county to obtain the skills and experience needed to pursue fulfilling careers in manufacturing and engineering.” Research also reveals that attitudes to towards engineering are changing. Since 2011 the proportion of 11 to 14 year olds who desire an engineering career has balmost doubled to 43%. Parents are becoming more positive too. Almost 2 out of 3 UK parents would welcome a career

in engineering for their kids. It’s not hard to understand when you look at the data. The average starting salary for engineering graduates is now £27,000 – over 20% higher than the national average. These statistics offer encouragement to those busy trying to double the number of graduates and apprentices entering the engineering industry. It is a huge task but a worthy one – not just because of the direct impact on such an important industry but also because of the wider benefit to our economy. Meeting these bold recruitment targets would generate an extra £27 billion for the economy every year from 2022 equivalent to building 1,800 schools or 110 hospitals. It’s really in everyone’s interest to get behind British engineering. So whether you are an investor, parent or student why not think about how you could get involved? IS A CARE HOME REALLY THE BEST OPTION FOR MUM?

S

o what do you do for the best when you know your elderly parent isn’t coping at home? You know they need looking after and a little extra support, but is a care home really necessary and is it the best and only option? “It’s a problem facing many peopleâ€? says David Westerby, Village Manager at the soon to open Richmond Witney Retirement Village. “Every day IDPLO\ PHPEHUV WHOO PH KRZ Ă€HUFHO\ independent their parents are, but the reality is often very different with many ageing parents reliant on a great deal of support from a combination of family, friends, neighbours and public services. The stresses on families can be enormousâ€?. Of course families and friends are there to help as much as they can and generally do their utmost, but often they’re not local and have many other important responsibilities and demands on their time. “It’s a real conundrumâ€? says David, “and often people are still isolated at home with no real quality of

life despite the sterling efforts of their family and friends to sustain them. So what is the alternative? In the past the only obvious solution has been residential care, but this might seem like an unnecessarily draconian step to take when, with a little extra care and support, an elderly parent can continue to enjoy a more independent lifestyle. The answer could be a Village Suite at award-winning retirement village operator Richmond Villages, who are part of Bupa. People purchase their own apartment and enjoy a level of support which includes all meals, cleaning, laundry and household chores, with personal care on hand 24/7 if required. “Most people have at least one meal a day with friends in the restaurant or take the option of having meals brought to their apartment. continues David, “Dining with friends is a regular social occasion for most people, but the social aspect is enhanced further by our activities and events team who facilitate everything from bridge clubs to cultural festivals, all designed around the

Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival hits a six on and off the pitch with a new stylish summer vibe he 2016 Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival promises to bowl over the Cheltenham community with an injection of new events throughout the 12 day extravaganza in July. Fusing the wellestablished cricket festival hospitality and traditions with some new stylish social events and inspired activities will bring this much-loved summer occasion to a new audience. Keen cricket supporters will be able to watch international stars of the future at the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival this summer with two international “A” games being held at the historic College Ground for the first time. Bringing a truly international flavor to Cheltenham, England Lions will take on Pakistan A on July 19 with Sri Lanka A facing Pakistan the previous day. The two matches are part of a bumper programme that is among the most diverse and exciting to be staged at the world’s longest-running cricket festival from July 13 to 24. The 12 day event includes the chance to see Gloucestershire across all three formats of the game, including the Royal London One-Day Cup which they won in thrilling style at Lord’s last year. The idyllic setting, with its magnificent backdrop of Cheltenham College, will provide the perfect stage for some of the top names in cricket, including the Australian duo Michael Klinger and Andrew Tye, to entertain the famously passionate Cheltenham crowds. Off the pitch there will be a fantastic showcase of refreshments, hospitality and evening entertainment. This year the Cricket Festival is ramping ups its offering for foodies with some exciting food vendors to be announced. Gill Kirkham from Rare Event, who is organising and marketing the off-pitch activities, says: ‘We really wanted to make the festival even more appealing by giving it a new injection of vitality. The gates will open to the public eight days of the twelve from 4pm so that they can soak up the atmosphere of this

T

incredible event in the heart of Cheltenham. ‘As well as enjoying the cricket matches, there will be schedule of evening entertainment and food, we’ll have a host of new shops, show casing local entrepreneurs, artists, suppliers and a garden chill-out area that will add to the whole festival vibe. We’ve kept it stylish to compliment the traditional cricket ambiance, but we also wanted to add to the character of the festival overall. ‘I’m delighted to announce Cheltenham’s first yogathon that will take place on Saturday July 16th in the evening. This is going to be a fantastic event on the pitch, and we expect at least 300 yogis to attend with mats and bare feet. The aim is to raise funds for Hiren Joshi who is well loved in Cheltenham and Gloucester. His battle with Pancreatic Cancer is very real and current and we want to help towards his cause. Everyone is welcome to this event.’ Gill is also instrumental in setting up the new-look Ladies’ Day in collaboration with Richard Smith of the new The Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospital that includes Egyptian bellydancing by Ann Blagden and a stylish boho-chic theme. Gill says: ‘We are encouraging ladies to dress with a boho theme as floaty and cricket go so well together, and we’ll be hosting a best dressed competition. This special day is about celebrating the female form, as well as being about the cricket! For the less versed, we’ll be providing a guide to all things cricket-related so the ladies can

really get involved and cheer on the teams.’ This year the festival will interactive with Twitter and Facebook adding to the social element. People will be invited to upload camera shots and win prizes. All supporters during the festival can enjoy superb views from one of the onsite hospitality marquees that local businesses use to treat clients, or which friends gather together in to celebrate as part of the 144 year old Festival. Unbelievable! Sandra Paul wishes Her Majesty, a ‘Very Happy 90th Birthday’ ords I never thought I would hear myself say. My father used to make my brother and I stand to attention throughout the Queen’s Speech every Christmas Day. Ex-RAF, he believed strongly in showing respect to the Royal Family but his devotion had the opposite effect on us – at that time, the Royals seemed to have no real relevance in our lives. They were distant and stuck up. They were a drain on the nation. Other than opening garden fetes, they didn’t really seem to ‘do’ anything. Then Prince Charles got married and suddenly Princess Diana brought glamour and celebrity to what had hitherto seemed dull and dusty. In my early twenties I worked with various anti-drug and youth bodies. Involving HRH Princess Diana in some way was crucial to us as her participation meant the media spotlight would be shone on all the related issues including homelessness, rehabilitation and AIDs. Her critics wailed that she participated because she was in thrall with the media and sought publicity for herself. Possibly. But I saw her in action and there is no doubt that her celebrity status held huge power to change the hearts and minds of the public and officials – and to bring in the cash for those charities. My affection for Princess Diana did not extend to the rest of the Royal Family and I was disappointed at their officious response when she died so tragically. It is only in the last decade or so that I have really come to admire and have some affection for the Queen and her family. And it is probably the younger generation - her grandchildren, who have led the way to my peace with their elders. Actually, it is the children of Princess Diana who have created this ‘brand rehabilitation’. I admire Prince William for doing a ‘normal’ job and continuing to serve the public good as an air-ambulance pilot. I am also a huge admirer of Prince Harry, particularly for initiating the Invictus Games, following his career in the armed forces. For both these men, leaving the forces to become ‘full-time’ Royals must have

W

92 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

been a blow. Forsaking the camaraderie, the adrenalin highs of combat and the knowledge that they are serving their country in a practical way simply to become full-time Princes, must have seemed especially hard. They could have ended up like Prince Andrew - given an honorary position on behalf of Britain, travelling the world from party to party and doing nothing to support the positive image of Royalty. One imagines how his mother must wince each time she sees yet another headline revealing the dodgy deals her son has allegedly participated in. William and Harry are always mindful to pay tribute to their grandmother for the example she has set in doing her duty. Both Princes have turned their personal charities into proper businesses. The success of Invictus is not because Prince Harry turns up for scheduled photo calls but it is because he is personally involved at every level and you can see that. He has used his royal status to make a global impact with Invictus and has turned the spotlight of the global media and therefore public awareness, onto the wounded returning heroes. Simply appearing at the Chelsea Flower Show year after year or opening a new hospital wing, is not seen as particularly important by the general British public but is viewed as more of a tourist attraction for foreign visitors. In

fact, when any discussion of the Royal Family takes place, the question of how much revenue they generate through inward tourism as opposed to how much the British taxpayer pays to maintain a Royal family, is often trotted out. Weighing up the monetary benefits, however, is not enough in my opinion. ‘Brand Royal’ needs to do more than bring in the money and that is where the young Princes have an influence. Making a practical contribution on an ongoing basis to issues that hold humanity back, are crucial in these times. At the same time, showing a little humour goes a long way to creating affection, which is just as important to our perception of the Royals, as admiration. And it is William and Harry’s influence, I am sure, that has made their grandmother, the Queen, lighten up a little. Her participation in the Olympic Games alongside James Bond, and her quip to Prince Harry in the Invictus video, reveal a Queen with a sense of humour and in touch with her people. Vital, if the Royal Family is to have any longevity. Sandra Paul has been in the communications industry for over twenty years working for Prime Ministers, Presidents and CEOs. R&R A monthly column exploring the perfect location to clear your head and spend quality time with the ‘lovely one’ in your life This month Susan Blanchfield reviews The Fish Hotel, Broadway What’s with the name ‘Fish?’ inquired our children when we told them we were heading to the intriguingly sounding hotel just outside Broadway. The Fish, as it turns out, is rather an apt moniker for a hotel that likes to be, well, a little bit different. Set in a village-style resort on the glorious, rolling, 400-acre Farncombe estate, the Fish Hotel eschews your average style of large hotel building and instead, is housed in an imaginatively constructed collection of rooms and annexes, scattered around connecting hillside paths. Our visit began well, with a fault free, seamless check in, handled by smiling and enthusiastic staff. So far, so good. We waved away the offer of golf card transportation and wandered down the short steep hillside towards our room. It didn’t disappoint. The scandi style palate of soothing creams and greys housed simple, chic furniture and a large, comfortable bed. The luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bath and rain shower also included quirky touches such as the mismatched floor tiles. Fauxfur throws and comfortable chairs with foot rests provided lux, chalet style comfort and finally, the biggest treat of all; a lovely wood-burning stove, replete with a stocked log basket and the witty signage “come on baby, light my fire” with instructions for those who needed to summon assistance with the business of lighting their stove. Four legged friends are not forgotten either; a comfy padded blanket and doggy treats sat close by for additional family members. Legend has it that the Benedictine

monks of Evesham Abbey used to keep and cure their fish in caves around the hill on which the Fish is situated. This story has been embraced by the owners of the hotel and there is a nod to the legend, throughout, particularly in the hotel Restaurant which has a distinctly nautical feel to it. To our regret, a torrential downpour hijacked any plans we might have had to explore the Estate so we grabbed one of the big golf umbrellas left by the door to our room (another nice touch) and opted for an early supper at The Lodge which houses the social and dining hub of the Fish. Our 2 minute walk brought us back to the reception and into the skilfully designed bar with its adjacent dedicated games room that included a billiard table, Playstation and more; ideal for entertaining children. Dinner was spot on. The menu was extensive enough to appeal to most palates without being over fussy and pretentious and the variety enough to appease meat and non-meat eaters alike. Throughout dinner the service was just right; discreet, friendly and efficient and the views from the floor to ceiling restaurant windows were gorgeous; the surrounding outdoor terrace offering wonderful views over the valley. Hotels are nothing without their people and here, the staff exude enthusiasm for their work as well as having extensive knowledge about the

wealth of outdoor activities offered by the Fish. These include walks from your hotel room, bike trails and thrill inducing quad bike options as well as clay pigeon shooting and archery. You can even take a guided Segway safari. If you prefer to amble, the grounds are worth exploring, with extensive, woodland and views over the Vale of Evesham. Broadway, the closest village to the hotel, is a 30 minute walk down the hill, it is classic Cotswolds and as well as the usual outdoor clothing stores, tea rooms and pubs, it offers an offshoot of Oxford’s Ashmolean museum. The following morning we dived into the big buffet breakfast as well as sampling the sensational bacon and eggs from the a la carte. It was still raining, although a swift ten minute walk to the brow of the hill to view the valley spread out below was worth the soaking. The Fish has nailed a tricky market by offering affordable, cosy chic for couples and families wanting a relaxing yet energetic break. It is a haven for children, with vast spaces to explore and it also offers terrific choice of imaginative activities for older kids and teens as well as adults. The layout and stylish setting has an informal feel and it feels like miles from anywhere until you arrive at the Estate entrance to the main road and you realise you are actually in the middle of everything. What’s in a name? Turns out, in the case of the Fish, a great deal. Rates at The Fish Hotel start from £89 per room per night including breakfast and VAT. Based on two sharing a standard room. Picnic Rivalry Food Writer, Rachel Cappuccini provides the most decadent of picnic ideas for this summer’s tartan rugs here is something both romantic and exciting about a picnic, evoking happy childhood memories; possibly why most of us remain devoted to the same picnic foods we are familiar with. Except of course on the school fields, when picnic rivalry is abundant and creativity flourishes. A close friend who managed a very prestigious hotel in Aberdeen remembers the annual hamper ball in the grounds with a smile. He witnessed one family unload a whole side of beef which was placed on a table covered with stiff white linen and carved with the family silver. Fabulous, though a little extreme for most of us, yet with a little effort and 20 minutes or less for assembly, you can create the kind of picnic that will put pre-prepared shop foods to shame while saving you a small fortune. Preparation is key and a few essential rules and equipment helpful. There are some stunning rugs, plastic dining ware, contemporary bamboo cutlery and so on all at very affordable prices. For a vintage look you can pick up some mismatched china plates at local flea markets and throw some faded linens over your waterproof picnic rug. Take some storm lamps with you to set the scene and burning citronella candles keeps the insects at bay. Don’t forget the gadgets, a corkscrew being key. I love the stakes you can buy to hold down glasses and bottles in the grass, and food tents are useful to keep the insects off. Be prepared for rain, or indeed very hot weather avoiding disasters with chocolate or cream. Another great tip is to put some salad dressing into a jam jar and add to salad before serving so the salad doesn’t go soggy. And don’t forget the black sacks! I could fill the magazine with picnic food ideas but I like the idea of some old favourites, smartened up along with some refreshing salads and a few interesting extras. Everyone loves chicken wings or drumsticks - try marinating the night before in piri piri or

Cajun spices, or char-grill chicken fillets and serve with a green chilli and corn salsa. Homemade meatloaf, pork pies, scotch eggs (try falafel scotch eggs) and classic Quiche Lorraine are hard to beat. I always like to take some smoked trout or salmon pate I’ve made by blitzing with cream cheese, herbs and lemon and maybe an aubergine and tahini dip too, delicious with crusty French bread or lighter crackers. Perk up the sandwiches a little. Sliced charred steak and caramelized red onion with crumbled feta is delicious in baguette or smear some whole wheat tortilla wraps with home-made humus and add raw crudites of beetroot, cucumber, red pepper and avocado. Lime and crème fraiche lobster rolls in soft white baps are amazingly decadent – mix cooked lobster with crème fraiche, lime rind, black pepper and chopped chives. To drink alongside the chilled rose wine, home made pink lemonade is delicious or for something different try some blueberry and mint iced tea. Both lovely to keep stocked in the fridge for the warmer days ahead. A couple of colourful salads in plastic storage boxes tipped out onto pretty plates make a picnic. Throw over some edible flowers to complete the picture. Here are some ideas to inspire

you…fennel, pomegranate and peeled broad beans; red cabbage slaw; torn toasted pitta, ripe tomaotes, olives, parsley and mint; fruity tabbouleh with crumbled feta. Mixed melon varities with strawberries and mint. The list is endless. As a lighter alternative or addition to pork pies and sausage rolls try these mini frittatas and finish off with Pimms Jelly Jars.

The Royal Oak has had a rich and varied history since it’s initial construction in 1628. From our very first viewing we could immediately see the potential and decided that this beautiful, historic pub deserved more. My family and I purchased the freehold in 2015 with a vision to breathe new life into an otherwise neglected public house. We aim to create space for exquisite dining, an ale to suit every palate and a warm, welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors alike. Our son is an extremely accomplished chef who has trained at some of the most established hotels up and down the country. He is now bringing his 3 rosette knowledge to the table and along with his brigade, has put together a menu fit for both fine dining connoisseurs and classic pub food lovers.

THE ROYAL OAK, ANDOVERSFORD Food Writer, Rachel Cappuccini visited The Royal Oak, Andoversford I am probably not the best candidate to go and review a local pub’s traditional Sunday lunch menu (though I am a huge advocate of Sunday lunch at it is often the only time families get to sit down together), it often fills me with dread, conjuring up plates piled high with meat, soggy vegetables and roast potatoes, which have clearly been keeping warm for several hours, all drenched in gravygranule-gravy. As a Yorkshire lass, I am partial to a Yorkshire pudding and I cringe at the number of times I have been offered a sunken stodgy pudding my mother would have something to say about. Times have changed though and there is now many a pub or gastro pub offering much lighter healthier alternatives or a more modern take on our traditional Sunday lunch. So it was with a little trepidation that I pulled up outside the Royal Oak in Andoversford, a mere 10 minute drive out of Cheltenham, with my good friend Jennifer, to sample their Sunday lunch menu. I asked for a later booking and they happily obliged seating us at 2.30pm, so after a lovely long walk with the dogs in neighbouring countryside we pulled up in the ample car park with the sun shining. At that point the old adage ‘one should never judge a book by its cover’ sprang to mind as my thoughts once again turned to old school Sunday lunches. I could not have got it so very wrong. We were met by smiling faces at the bar and a lovely young lady showed us to our table, situated on an internal balcony overlooking the main bar/restaurant area. For me the real test of a good Sunday lunch is that the food is still fresh after the busy period is finished. The quiet table enabled my friend and I to relax over a gin and tonic whilst we looked at the menu. Upon first glance I thought it looked a little sparse with only traditional dishes on offer for main courses. However, upon second glance I decided that I liked its simplicity and shortness and Jennifer and I agreed we would start by

sharing three starters. Greedy I know, but I love that style of dining and it was very hard to choose between them. My taste buds were warming up now and I was certainly not disappointed and managed a surprised gasp as the three plates were put down before us. Each starter was simply delicious and very well presented. The beetroot cured salmon with smoked mackerel rillettes, hazelnuts and melba toast was refreshingly light. We also had a chicken, ham hock and wild mushroom terrine served with a celeriac remoulade and brioche, a heartier wholesome offering; as well as a goat’s cheese croquette served with a red onion tartlet and pickled fennel. The croquette was crispy, light and non greasy and I loved the pickled fennel. The starters were very reasonably priced at around £5.50-6 each. Superb value. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all though was the main courses. Jennifer was keen to try the fish of the day, a meaty portion of sea bream served with a tangy salsa verde and a light turmeric sauce. Again, stunningly presented and not over-facing. I opted for the Gloucester Old Spot Pork Belly with apple sauce. I would even go as far as saying this is one of the best ever pork belly dishes I’ve ever tasted. The light but crispy crackling on both sides of the meat simply melted along with the meat. No toothpick required at all! The apple green sauce, tart and tangy as it should be with very little sugar. And a perfectly

cooked Yorkshire pudding! Main courses are also very reasonably priced around £13. I decided this would be a good time to meet the chef, Phil Brown, and ask for his recommendation for pud. Phil arrived in shiny whites. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting to this enthusiastic young man who has an infectious passion for food and pushing the boundaries. He and his family bought the pub recently and are slowly bringing it back to life. I had chosen the right moment to meet him as he confessed his real passion is pastry, enthusing about a frozen parsnip soufflé he had recently created. More appealing to Jennifer was a selection of home-made sorbets and ice cream; basil; pear and sparkling wine and pistachio ice cream. The noises coming from opposite me reminded me of that scene in ‘When Harry Met Sally’. I opted for a lemon and thyme posset. Anything with lemon or lime always wins me over, and the subtle flavor of thyme left on the palette was a delight. Finally … tea in the garden in the late sun was a delightful end to a superb lunch. I will certainly go back and the experience has refreshed my attitude towards the English Sunday lunch and taught me not to judge a book by its cover! HIIT WORKOUT The Kydd Fitness Way Cotswold Style’s Fitness Expert, Luciano Kydd takes you through The ‘Awesome 6’ Routine With HIIT workout being all the rage of late I decided this month to create my own bodyweight KyddFitness HIIT workout call “THE AWESOME 6” which will get you sweating in half the time for those timepoor individuals or for someone who’s looking to mix things up whether in the comfort of your home, park or local gym. High Intensity Interval Training, also known as HIIT, is a favourite type of workout among fitness professional and it's quite an effective training method for helping to burn fat, along with a sensible eating plan. Not only does it help burn fat, but it also helps with improving your cardiovascular fitness if time is an issue. Regular HIIT workouts can help to make you fitter, stronger and leaner if done correctly with the right nutritional intake. If you are looking for a nutrition guideline why not try my recipe ebook at: (www.kyddfitness.co.uk/product/theultimate-recipes-for-weight-fat-loss-ebook/) One of the benefits is that it only takes approximately, 20 minutes of your day if you’re just starting out and cannot get in a full 60 mins gym session - finding time is always a big excuse for people wanting to get fit! HIIT involves short bursts of intense exercise pushing you towards your own max, followed by recovery periods of lowintensity activity or rest. You can try one of these different approaches of one minute cycles, such as 20 seconds of really hard work towards your maximum, followed by 40 seconds of rest. Or you can tone it down it down by doing 30 seconds of hard effort, followed by 30 seconds of rest, or even 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds rest. You repeat this for 15–20 minutes and you’re good to go. Try this 4-5 time a week and the rest of the day is yours. Another benefit of HIIT is that you don’t need always need a gym or even any equipment. All you really need is some time, focus, motivation, space and a good old-fashioned timer or your phone. You can smash a HIIT session with a mix of bodyweight exercises. All you need to do is

102 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

choose an exercise or a combo of exercises that are good for you and work hard for 20 minutes. If you do have access to a gym, you can also do great HIIT workouts using a combination of free weight and cardio equipment if you like, as long as you are working as hard as you can, using correct technique and the right selection of weights. HIIT workouts can be tailored to your fitness levels, so whether you’re 18 years old or 55, a good HIIT session can be designed for your own bespoke personal level of fitness. The aim is to get your heart rate up to near maximal levels during the intense sets, before recovering during the rest periods. Try my AWESOME 6 workout using any of the templates described; now get a water bottle, a towel and off you go and upon finishing, why not drop me a line via my Facebook page Kydd-Fitness, to tell me how you got on. 1. Bodyweight Jump Squat (for individuals who cannot do high impact exercise, stick with the basic bodyweight squat.)

2. Bodyweight Renegade Row

3. Y-raises with superman

4. Jumping Lunges (for individuals who cannot do high impact exercise, stick with the basic bodyweight walking lunges.)

5. Lying Leg Raises

ROYAL ASCOT Nigel Aplin, Betlive Radio’s expert racing pundit, previews summer’s greatest Racing Festival oyal Ascot gets under way this year on Tuesday 14th June with its traditional opening race, the Group One Queen Anne Stakes.

R

QUEEN ANNE STAKES Open to horses aged four and over, the competitive curtain-raiser over the Straight Mile course is contested over a trip of one mile, and often proves to be one of the biggest betting races of the meeting as punters look to get off to the perfect start with a winner. The Queen Anne Stakes has grown into a top-class contest, but favourites only have a respectable record in recent times. Goldikova’s win in the race back in 2010 was the first winning favourite since Intikhab back in 1998 prior to the race becoming a Group One contest. In terms of the most impressive winner, Frankel would surely be top of anyone’s list. Previous Ascot form is always a plus, even more so if it has been gained at the Royal Meeting, while a past win in Group One class is particularly noteworthy. Horses who have run several times prior to this race tend to do less well than those who come into the race on the back of just one or two runs. Brilliant North American race mare Tepin signed off on her domestic duties in America before her visit to Royal Ascot with yet another utterly

104 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

dominant performance to win the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile. With the Churchill Downs racecaller dubbing her ‘The Queen of the Turf ’, her trainer Mark Casse confirmed that the plan now is to travel to Britain for the Queen Anne Stakes. “I guess we better start figuring out how we do this," he said. “As long as she is happy and healthy, the next day or two we'll map out a plan. So I guess Royal Ascot here we come.” Mares have not got a brilliant record in this race and it may pay to take a big each way price about The Lockinge winner Belardo.

KING'S STAND STAKES International horses that go to the trouble of travelling the massive distances to come over for Royal Ascot tend to be champions in their own countries, and there was a school of thought that foreign sprinters were far superior to their British and Irish counterparts. Australian runners are always respected, and in recent times the number of challengers from America has been steadily increasing. It is surely only a matter of time before they start making their mark on the Group One sprint races in Britain. Cue Acapulco, trained in America by Wesley Ward, this phenomenal physical specimen of a filly who dominated her fellow two-year-olds in last season's Queen Mary Stakes, a race that has worked out well, with Besharah subsequently winning at Group Two level. Wesley Ward was quoted immediately following that effort as saying: “She ran a fantastic race and I really believe we could have had an even better result on quicker ground, but I don’t want to take anything away from the winner, who ran a monstrously huge race. I had dinner with Michael Tabor

(part-owner) that night and I suggested that we should now work backwards from the King’s Stand and he said, ‘Done’, so that is the plan. We hope to be back for the King’s Stand and the Nunthorpe again next year as a three-year-old filly and hopefully we’ll bring her back there 110 per cent.” One thing that is almost guaranteed these days at Royal Ascot is fast ground, and that should help her turn around the Nunthorpe form with Mecca’s Angel. She confirmed her wellbeing this season with a comfortable win and, all things considered, should Acapulco turn up in the fullness of health, there is every chance she will be only a small fraction of the 8/1 currently available. COVENTRY STAKES I can pass on a good word for Psychedelic Funk who has a terrific attitude. Ger Lyons, his trainer was also quick to praise his temperament after his recent win whilst Irish horses have a very good record in this race at 7/1, a good each way bet.

Wednesday THE PRINCE OF WALES STAKES The highlight of day two of Royal Ascot, the Prince of Wales's Stakes, is a Group One contest open to four-year olds and older, and takes place over a distance of 1m 2f. Considered by many to be the premier race of the five days of Royal Ascot, the race can trace its’ history all the way back to 1862 where it was won by Carisbrook. Invariably the race throws up a strong and talented field for this contest, and it can be difficult for punters to come up with a likely winner given the strength of the participants. It can often pay then to look for value in the likelier candidates

who could run into a place rather than look for the winner. The winner has in recent years come from the top four in the betting, and the race is a fair contest for favourites. Bigger priced winners are relatively rare though, so it should pay to stick with the top runners. I am a great fan of French trainer Andre Fabre and if he brings over New Bay and wins, at about 5/1, then I'm all in for staying in Europe.

Thursday THE ASCOT GOLD CUP Traditionally run on Ladies’ Day, the race is steeped in history, and is among the most eagerly anticipated races on the calendar each year. The Queen has attended the Royal Ascot meeting every year during her reign, and upwards of 60,000 racegoers will flock to the Berkshire venue to witness the Gold Cup in person. The Queen herself famously won this race in 2013 with Estimate, the first time ever that a reigning monarch has won the race. Irish horses have done well in the race, with Aidan O’ Brien also saddling Fame and Glory and Leading Light to victory in recent times. Horses tend to come into the race in good form, with most winners having run that season, and last time out winners also have a good record. It is also a good race for those horses towards the head of the market, favourites have a decent record, and highly rated horses also seem to be the ones to focus on. All things considered, if you are a punter who likes to back 33/1 shots, this probably isn’t the race for you, although an each way outsider often runs into a place. As such Burmese probably won't have the class to win this but at a big price is

Style Sport worth each way having finished fifth in the Sagaro Stakes. It will take a good horse to beat the Aiden O’Brien horse Order Of St George who could be far too good for these having won the Irish St Leger by eleven lengths. Scotland who was sixth in last year's Gold Cup and, like most German bred horse, has a tough streak in him, he’s unexposed, despite being a five year old, and at 33/1 is also worth an each way punt.

Friday THE CORONATION STAKES The Coronation Stakes is a chance for the top three-year-old fillies to come out and play as they take centre stage on day four of the 2016 Royal Ascot meeting. As I write it is unclear whom will run but if Nemoralia goes I really fancy her after a huge run at York’s May Dante meeting

Saturday THE DIAMOND JUBILEE STAKES The Group One Diamond Jubilee Stakes headlines the final day of horse racing action at Royal Ascot, and the top-class sprint contest is one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the week as some of the best sprinters from around the globe contest for a share of a prize-pot in excess of £600,000. Fillies and mares tend to struggle in this race when coming up against their male counterparts, while British-bred runners have a terrible recent record. Irish and US-bred horses have a much better time of things in this race, while there is no apparent draw bias with recent winners coming from across the stalls on both sides of the track. The Diamond Jubilee Stakes is without a doubt one of the top sprint contests in the world, drawing together top speedsters from around the globe, and an always-fiercely contested event showcases the best of Royal Ascot and what makes it such a popular event for punters to savour. I am a great fan of trainer Henry Candy and his horse Twilight Son and would be delighted for them both to come out winners. Nigel Aplin, formally Head of Broadcast for William Hill, is founder of www.betliveradio.com, which features a daily digest of betting banter.

Claire in the County Claire Thayers is tucking into all the food and drink ow I love June – mainly because I’m a podgy little moo and this month I intend to spend the birthday money, I received last month on a really special meal in the Cotswolds. This little cow has a perfect excuse to eat drink and be merry not that I ever really need an excuse, in this house - it’s a top priority! BUT where do you go? Living in the Cotswolds we have so many amazing places to choose from. The other problem is that if you are inviting friends to join you (at their cost, I hasten, as I am a poor little heifer), there is double the pressure. Do they do gluten free, will my vegetarian friend be happy, do they serve local food (I do like to support the local farmers), is it central to everyone, is there parking? How much is perceived as reasonable - believe you me, my friends are wide and varied and what may seem good value to one may seem expensive to another. What sort of food will they want and at what time of the day. THEN there is the sweet joy of sorting a date out – OMG how difficult can that be? VERY is the answer. If you ever have to organise supper, use Doodle online – takes a whole lot of

W

the stress out of finding a mutually convenient time and you don’t loose hours of your life on the phone. Can I also stress the need to agree how you are going to manage the bill at the end of the meal too… not sure if you have ever had this happen you but when you are self employed and waiting on a client to pay up, sometimes, you have to work to a budget. The worst was when a gang of us, ex Young Farmers went out to the pub. I agreed to drive so I drank orange juice all night long, watched everyone downing their Pinot’s, G&T’s and Pimms, then to add insult to injury I made a pathetic excuse that I wasn’t hungry and just a starter would suffice for me yet everyone else (yep you have guessed it) guzzled down three courses; salmon to start, fillet steak and dessert, oh and Irish coffee! What a fool was I? I should have had the same. Lesson learnt. So when you have chosen your venue, agreed the date and received written confirmation, signed in blood and the booking is made – just make sure you don’t loose your deposit too (I learnt that lesson this weekend). In fact now that I am writing this – I have to ask myself, why do I always take

on the mantel of event organiser for everyone? If it’s a festival, a meal, or a trip to the theatre, I seem to be the one that ends up doing all the work and I am the one that is working full time, organising kids, stressed out, and then I end up loosing out financially too. Will I stop? No of course not, why? Easy… because I love my friends, love having a laugh and love good food and wine … whether we eat out … or throw some supper together and invite everyone to mine and now that summer is almost here, get everyone to bring food to you, one course each. It’s great fun and takes all that pressure away. Throw it all into the middle of the table and start troughing. So think of this greedy heifer, tucking into her birthday supper this month which, with a bit of luck will be the best oysters, a nice bit of chateaubriand, washed down with a decent red and a vintage Port. You never know, with a bit of luck my maths may fail me and for once I may end up on the winning side for a change! Claire Thayers & Associates Email: claire@clairethayers.co.uk Tel: 07870632093

The Cotswold Gent On the elevation of the School Summer Picnic ith the impending arrival of the summer season I have been asked to turn my thoughts to those pastimes, which punctuate the lazy, hazy days of summer ahead. As I look out of my study window I note that the grass is lush and a moderately green shade of yellow – not bad considering the amount of rain that has fallen over the winter months. The trees appear to be fully in leaf – with the exception of my rather precious Gingko – which is always the last to awaken and my trusty garden helper appears to have successfully extracted the outdoor furniture from the shed and blasted it with the pressure washer to evict the cobwebs and their architects – thus rendering it serviceable for another summer of al fresco dining. And it is the theme of outdoor dining at this point to which I turn and in particular to the school speech day picnic - or whatever version of this summer festival your school may conduct - cricket matches, parent open days, the dreaded ‘art’ exhibition – the list is long and illustrious. Endless opportunities to be ‘out-picnicked’, sending shivers down the spine of the somewhat laissez faire picnicker that is your trusty correspondent! Now when I say laissez faire I do not mean that I don't have half an eye on the essentials. A bottle of Pimms is clearly a pre requisite with an abundance of diced fruit and mint to shove in the glass (although why, I know not) and a decent

W

white burgundy, essential to accompany the Queen of picnic dishes – Coronation Chicken. The Memsaab is none too keen on my next favourite picnic item - the trusty Pork Pie – preferring to substitute it with couscous, salad and other wholly indigestible flora from the vegetable garden. I am more of a ‘salad as a garnish’ type of chap really – you know – an honest half a tomato on top of a lettuce leaf next to my Pork Pie and Scotch Egg is ample greenery for me (rather like the fruit in Pimms issue – also unnecessary in my view). The Memsaab however is firmly of the view that the assemblage of an enormous salad together with some sort of dreaded haloumi is firm evidence of the personal effort that goes into making a satisfactory and acceptable picnic. I on the other hand, am certain that a tactical whip around the aisles of Waitrose can accomplish all very easily on the morning of the event. Comestibles aside however, my dear lady and myself are collectively flummoxed these days by the growing trend seen in some parents to outdo one another with outdoor equipment. And by equipment I mean sundry erections of anything from a relatively simple gazebo type thing – four tent poles and a lid – to the most extraordinary marquees resplendent with rather vulgar flowerpots and box hedging in a bucket - and some sort of water feature. There is quite definitely an arms race in the production of picnic facilities so to speak. Gone it

seems are the days of a hamper out of the back of the trusty Land Rover... we are into a whole new world of picnic buildings. And this leads me to my next concern. When faced with these epic structures – what is the correct picnic etiquette? Previously (in the olden days as my delightful young people tell me) it was perfectly good form to pull up adjacent to the boundary, or on the athletics field open up the back of the car, pull out a couple of deck chairs and crack open the fizz. Thereafter one would wander gently around the pitch – pit stopping at ones chums – or at least other parents we may have met along the way - and share in similar sort of picnic fayre as we offered from our own vehicle. Nowadays I feel almost certain that we are moments away from being issued with badges to attend some of the extravaganzas being offered by our fellow parents. One hardly feels comfortable negotiating with the doorman / driver whilst endeavouring to poke ones head around the corner and assess the quality of coronation chicken on offer in these majestic palaces. The summer school picnic has alas been elevated as in all other aspects of life – be it a child’s birthday party or a kitchen supper – into a colossal arms race of prosperity versus humility. Which brings me back to the pork pie… The humblest of picnic food... The most honest of English essentials... Forget marquees and gazebos... This must remain the mainstay of the English summer picnic! COTSWOLD STYLE JUNE 2016 113

This Month with Kate Justice

Wedding Dramas… Kate Justice is preparing for her best friend’s nuptials How many weddings are you going to this summer? It’s always busy for weddings around now... all that LOVE in the summer heat. This month, I am quite heavily involved in a Gloucestershire wedding; one of my best friends, Tracy, is getting married on June 18th. It’s been so long since I was around anyone planning a wedding I’d forgotten just how much effort goes in. (My own wedding ten years ago, was a bit of a last minute throw together in California, so I have never experienced it first hand anyway.) For Tracy’s wedding, my daughter is a bridesmaid, my son is an usher and we are all going to the ceremony at Longhope church – parents too – and then to the after party, sorry, Reception, at The Yew Tree in Clifford’s Mesne. It is a big day for all the family and I am embroiled in a fair bit of the build up and prep. And oh my gosh what a lot of prep there is! This is a very nice and fairly size-able do and it’s been about 18 months in the planning. One thing that has struck me as I’ve attended dress selection days (almost a whole day in one shop), suit fittings and make up practice sessions, is just how much EVERYONE is into the wedding too. It is perfectly normal to expect – and receive - several one on one dedicated fitting sessions with your own personal assistant, for every single outfit required! The level of dedication from those involved has actually cheered me up. It’s only one day, but DOZENS of professionals around the county are poised and willing to spend a considerable amount of time discussing the ins and outs of ‘teal’ versus ‘magenta’ and the difference an inch on the veil will make to the dress. Time-after-time. Week-after-week. I love it. LOVE it: People buying a new car spend less time analysing. Heck, a new house – purchase price half a million - has seen fewer hours spent on decision making. (And once that decision is made, there’s a lot more to deal with than the colour of the bouquet.) Obviously, the lengthy planning / 114 JUNE 2016 COTSWOLD STYLE

“It’s only one day, but DOZENS of professionals around the county are poised and willing to spend a considerable amount of time discussing the ins and outs of ‘teal’ versus ‘magenta’...” indulgent shopping time also reflects the potential life long commitment that a wedding day leads to. It might only be for one day... but goodness what a lot that day represents. After that one day – there will be a new family. Two adults agreeing to share all their worldly possessions with one another...and most of their evenings too. It’s the emotional side to that day that affords it the gravity; justifying the hours, sweat and tears involved in the run up. I’d love to know what percentage of

people cry at weddings (bride and groom aside) but I’m willing to bet a month’s salary (apparently what a chap should spend on an engagement ring) that no one retains a dry eye in the dress shop when the wedding gown is first fitted. It’s the cold light of day, I’ve struggled to park, I’m running late, I only have 20 mins and the bride to be is not in the correct undies... but...

….wrap my beautiful friend in flowing ivory lace, with every woman in the room helping to flounce out the skirts with a hundred slender fingers balancing the glistening tiara, nestling in a silken fountain of veil that spells elegance, poise and sexuality all at once and I’m a sobbing heap in the corner. God help me on the day when my own children escort her down the aisle! Good luck Tracy and Marcel, I love you.
