welcome

editor’s foreword

Welcome to your July issue of Cotswold Style. As you can see, things have changed a little from this month forwards and I’d like to introduce myself as the new Editor and wish Eve well as she takes a sabbatical to raise her young family. Eve will remain a creative force within the brand as she becomes Web Editor and continues to develop and grow our new and exciting website. Patriotism is well and truly alive this month as talk of Olympic preparations come to an end and we get set to play host to the greatest games on earth from July 27thAugust 12th. I caught up with Olympic athlete and Team GB hockey midfielder, Ashleigh Ball, to find out what this fantastic opportunity means to her and how she is handling the pressure. Read the interview on page 18. Don’t miss Gloucester Quays Food Festival, which takes place from July 20th 22nd. The three-day event offers free entry and there is also the chance to watch live cooking demonstrations from TV chefs Gino D’Acampo and James Martin, along with hot new kids on the block Tom and Henry Herbert, as seen on Channel 4’s The Fabulous Baker Brothers. Kings Chrysler Cheltenham and Gloucester are exhibiting their range at the festival and so make sure you pop along and visit their stand. Friday 20th is Cotswold Style Day at the Food Festival and provides you with the opportunity to meet award winning local chefs, kicking off with Rob Rees at 10.30am. Turn to pages 46-49 for the full details. Consume a little culture as The Cheltenham Music Festival returns to town for 2012. The 11 day festival features some of the finest musicians from across the world. See page 11 for more details. And check to see if you’ve been spotted by our Style Spy on page 83, a brand new feature that puts you and your fashion choices in the spotlight, supported by Cheltenham Fashion Week. As always, please let me know what you think of the latest issue. We always welcome your views and opinions via Facebook, or drop me a line at the email address below. Enjoy the issue!

real life

As Olympic fever hits Britain this month, Emma Roberts chats to local athlete, Ashleigh Ball, and finds out what it means to her to be representing her country on an international stage. Photograph Rob Wheatman.

I, like many of you I’m sure, am feeling truly patriotic this summer. Still reeling from the excitement of the Jubilee, we now have the world’s gaze firmly fixed upon us as we get set to play host to the 2012 Olympic games. But it’s one thing being lucky enough to have tickets to attend the games, or cheering our country’s best on in front of the box, more fascinating is finding out exactly how a star player is handling the pressure. Step-up Ashleigh Ball! Selected for the Great Britain hockey squad for the Olympics, Ashleigh has admitted that the news was greeted with a huge amount of relief. The 26-year-old Brighton-born midfielder, who lives in Cheltenham, will make up part of the 16-strong team and isn’t willing to settle for anything less than Olympic Gold. Ashleigh started playing hockey at primary school when she was 10. I don’t need to tell you how that has turned out for her, but it’s nice to know that she remains sympathetic to her fellow athletes who weren’t lucky enough to be selected. “I mostly felt relief when I heard that I had been selected, but with that came a huge sense of pride and excitement,” Ashleigh explains. “But also sadness for the girls in my squad that have missed out on this selection. We have been training together for 3 years and have had some incredible experiences both on and off the pitch during this time. The final 16 players represent a wider squad of players who have focused their lives on striving to achieve Gold in London.” “Not until the announcement was made that the Olympics were to be held in London did I consider the possibility of becoming an Olympian,” Ashleigh recalls. I can only imagine the elation that must have captivated the local athlete when she heard the news at being selected. But is she now feeling the pressure? “Dealing with the

18 COTSWOLD STYLE

expectations of a wider audience than we are used to and not feeling the pressure will certainly be a challenge”, Ashleigh says, but this isn’t a team that isn’t prepared. “I started training with the senior team in 2009. The squad relocated to Bisham Abbey where our centralised program is based, and we have all of our training facilities, medical practitioners, support staff, and video analysis rooms in one location.” The GB team is ranked fourth in the world, and as one would expect Ashleigh has her eyes on the prize, “We have World Cup bronze medals, we have a Champions Trophy silver, and have beaten the 3 teams ahead of us before, so Gold is the aim.” When she isn’t playing hockey, Ashleigh enjoys spending time with her friends and family, “At the moment there isn’t much free time and so I see friends and family when I can, this often revolves around us cooking or drinking coffee!” But she is happy to be based here and appreciates what’s on her doorstep, “I love Cheltenham. I like the escape it offers from the busy cities, while being surrounded by the most beautiful countryside in England. And the shopping and nightlife are good too!” And will she follow any other sport during Olympic season? “Not much, probably! It will be very much about remaining focused on our job. Our tournament runs for 11 days so it will be a long period of competition. But I will be supporting every British athlete and trying to experience as much of the other sports as possible, probably by following on the TV during rest times.” It’s inspiring to meet somebody so committed to their vocation and we all wish Ashleigh and team GB the Gold they deserve. And for any budding hockey stars of the future, Ashleigh has these final words of advice, “Get involved with your local club, aim high, and work hard!” CS JULY 2012

Woodmancote Cheltenham Setting the scene: Set in the heart of the village, enjoying views back towards Nottingham Hill, the property sits on a level, mature and relatively private plot of just over a third of an acre. Thought to date from the 1920’s, the property has undergone significant extension and more recently a thorough refurbishment. Why we love it: The well-proportioned accommodation is arranged over two floors with the primary rooms being of an excellent size, with multiple aspects onto the gardens or up toward the hills. Currently the property is being used as a whole, but has the capacity to create a generous two bedroom Annex within, with own private access along with two linking doors to the main house. The garden to the rear is completely enclosed with the benefit of a sizable area of lawn, well stocked herbaceous borders, numerous sun traps and seating areas. Cheltenham letting agent launches new business Cheltenham entrepreneur and letting agent Alex Clark has recently launched a new business, Alex Clark Lettings Franchise.

Based on his successful Cheltenham lettings agency the new company, which had its official launch at the Franchise Show in London, is now open for business and looking for franchisees across the UK. Success has been swift and the company has already awarded four franchises to Vince Mitchell in Gloucester , Nik Bugler in Weston super Mare, George Hughes in Hertford and Peter Greenwood in Kingston-UponThames. The strength of the Alex Clark brand is such that growth is likely to stem from the South West area initially but a nationwide advertising campaign will soon bring the Alex Clark Lettings Franchise brand to the rest of the UK. With the 2011 Nat West/BFA survey stating that franchising brings £12.4 billion to the UK economy and that 90% of franchised businesses are in profit, it’s no surprise that new franchisee Vince Mitchell who now owns Alex Clark Lettings – Gloucester is delighted with his new business, ‘The knowledge and support I have obtained by going the franchise route with Alex gives me a huge advantage to get under-way and be successful much more quickly and

40 COTSWOLD STYLE

confidently that I would have done otherwise.’ Says Alex, ‘We’re absolutely delighted to have Vince, Nik, George and Peter on board and the team at head office have been working closely with them recently to ensure they have all the support and training they need to build a sustainable and profitable business.’ He continues, ‘After many months of planning and paperwork finally launching at the show was fantastic; we were able to get in front of the public and tell them about, what we believe to be, the best property lettings franchise in the market place. The response from visitors to our stand was fantastic and we’re now in the process of following up the numerous leads from the show.’ With a business strap line that says ‘The Adventure starts here’ Alex explains, ‘We truly believe that the difference between us and others in our industry is that we are genuine experts in our field.

My staff and I are drawing on over 20 years of experience of letting properties and we want to pass all of that knowledge on to our franchisees to make sure they are fully equipped to run sustainable, profitable businesses. Our franchisees can be sure that whatever questions they have or issues they come across, we’ve seen them and dealt with them before. Our franchise model, recently accepted by the British Franchise Association, is a great way to get into this rapidly expanding sector and we cannot wait to start helping motivated individuals across Gloucestershire and its environs to build their own highly successful businesses.’ CS

Food Festival 2012

a great family D FOO day out FESTIVAL R

GLOUCESTE

ND JULY 20TH-22

This month sees the return of the hugely popular Gloucester Quays Food Festival, packed with live cookery theatres, masterclasses, family entertainment and two of the UK’s favourite TV chefs Gino D’Acampo and James Martin. Here, we show you the highlights of this year’s event... Gloucester Quays is delighted to announce the return of its free three-day Food Festival this summer, following its scorching debut last year which attracted over 80,000 visitors. The team behind the show have once again secured two of the UK’s favourite TV chefs, Gino D’Acampo and James Martin, who will be cooking live on stage on Saturday and Sunday. The event will also see a debut Gloucester appearance from hot new kids on the block Tom and Henry Herbert, as seen on Channel 4’s The Fabulous Baker Brothers, also cooking live on Saturday and Sunday. The brothers come from a long line of family foodies and are carrying on the tradition with gusto. Both are 5th generation bakers with baking in their genes, and between them have put their bakery and butchery, Hobb’s House in Chipping Sodbury, firmly on the UK foodie map. The fact that they’re good looking young men hasn’t hindered them either! The festival will kick off with a powerhouse performance in every sense of the word on Friday, when Gloucester and England rugby legend and Celebrity Masterchef winner Phil Vickery MBE will be the star of the show, recreating his winning dishes that blew away Masterchef judges Greg Wallace and John Torode to see him take the ultimate TV cooking crown. Phil will be the headline performer on a day put together by Cotswold Style Magazine, which will feature a selection

of multi award-winning chefs from some of the county’s finest restaurants, all cooking live and sharing their experiences and tips with the audience. The day will be kicked off by Rob Rees, The Cotswold Chef, and will also feature Paul Mottram, head chef at Cheltenham’s Hotel Du Vin, and David Kelman, head chef at Ellenborough Park, Cheltenham. The event will also feature masterclass performances featuring tasting sessions and the opportunity for visitors to ‘have a go’, plus more than 60 great stalls selling fine food and drink to try and buy, plus cookware, crafts and accessories. Entry to the Festival is free including Phil’s cookery demonstrations, for those wanting to see Gino D'Acampo, James Martin and Tom and Henry Herbert, the organisers are urging people to book before the event to guarantee a seat. They can be booked online at www.gloucesterquaysfoodfestival.co.uk or at the Gloucester Quays Outlet customer service desks. “I can’t wait to see everyone again - we had so much fun last year,” says Gino. “I’ve got some new tricks up my sleeve and some tasty new dishes to serve up this year using fresh ingredients from Gloucestershire and far flung shores so I hope you can make it!” James Martin confirms: “Sampling the delights of some local producers last year really inspired me during the cooking demonstrations so I’m looking JULY 2012

GOLD

Sophie Taylor, wedding and event planner, gives her tips and advice on holding your own Olympic party. Friday the 27th of July will mark the start of the Olympics 2012 in London. So, on your marks, get set and ready to party! You don't need a track-side view to fully enjoy the Olympics 2012! Why not host your own “official” opening ceremony party at home? Get in the spirit with personalised invitations from fatflyers.com (Bath Rd, Cheltenham). They offer a comprehensive design service – go for a ticket style look. Make your guests feel privileged to be invited!

Rule 1: Lots of layering As with any event styling, layering is key. Choose 1-2 base colours and keep adding. I started with a white tablecloth and a gold runner. To introduce colour why not have a go at making your own Olympics rings. Or do as I did and simply use balloons; these balloons were from the balloon experts bannersnballoons.co.uk of Cheltenham. You can go as big as you like with balloon decoration and they can create ANYTHING! Rule 2: Reach new heights Now, you can’t have an Olympic party without a winners podium. I made my own winners podium from foam card, but paper covered shoe boxes will work just as well, then add printed numbers. Use your podium to display your food, JULY 2012

drink or flowers! Varying heights are important with any display and will help to add both drama and proportion. My patriotic flower display is from the very talented Richard at bumblebeez.co.uk of Cheltenham. And of course your table needs an Olympic torch. Gold spray paint transforms old vases and add coloured tissue for the 'flame'.

Rule 3: Satisfy appetites I chose quintessentially British grub. Quiches, pork pies, sausage rolls, mini trifles, scones and strawberries are all great. The gorgeous Swallow Bakery in Cheltenham made the amazing Olympic and patriotic Union Jack cupcakes! If, however, you’ve had quite enough of the Great British party menu (at least until the next Jubilee), then go for worldfare instead; Mini burgers from the USA, nachos from Mexico, dim sum from China, veggie pakoras from India - you get the picture! To drink; (this one is strictly for the grown ups).If you fancy yourself as a bit of a mixologist or just like to experiment then make your own punch or cocktail. This is my WINNING cocktail! GOING FOR GOLD • 2 1/2 oz Vodka • 1 1/2 oz Coconut Rum • 1 tsp shredded coconut Garnish: • Coconut flakes • Edible gold powder (available at

bakery/cake decorating outlets) Coat the bottom of a martini glass with gold powder. Combine remaining ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into gold-coated martini glass. The gold powder should float to the top. Sprinkle extra powder to deepen the colour. Garnish with coconut flakes and you’re done! Rule 4: All in the detail The finishing touches to your table or room are the most important. For these I raided theultimatepartyshop.co.uk in Cheltenham, where they have patriotic bunting, flags, hats, streamers and more! Don't forget your guests will make up the final layer, so insist on a dress code and award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals to the best dressed. And finally, with food, drink and decoration sorted sit back and enjoy the festivities. Let the games begin! CS www.sophietaylorcreative.co.uk follow on twitter @officialstaylor

Barnwood Construction – building on 50 years of excellence This year, Barnwood Group, incorporating Barnwood Construction and Barnwood Shopfitting divisions, celebrates its 50th anniversary, starting from humble beginnings to become one of the largest and most prestigious building companies in the county. Cotswold Style looks back on half a century of steady growth. 1962 was a year of historic headlines, including the Beatles’ first hit record, the Cuban missile crisis and the Anglo-French agreement to build the Concorde supersonic airliner. Meanwhile, in Gloucester, to a slightly more restrained public fanfare, Frank Evans, Pat and Dick Nicholls and Bert Davies formed the company that was to become Barnwood Construction. The Gloucester Stone Company Building Department, as it was then called, occupied the same Barnwood Road site where the company is still based. From the outset, the company built on solid foundations, establishing a reputation for quality construction and customer care that has remained unchanged in spite of the radical advances in building techniques and technology. Chris Gabb, current MD of Barnwood Group, which now incorporates Barnwood Construction and Barnwood Shopfitting, joined the company as assistant joinery manager on the shopfitting side in 1971. In his early years he was mentored by Bert Davies, taking over from Bert as MD of Barnwood Shopfitting when he retired in 1983. “Looking back, Barnwood Builders was small enough to quote flexibly but we thought through and managed projects like a much larger organisation - a miniature main JULY 2012

contractor rather than a jobbing builder if you like,” he said. “In the early days architects tended to be in charge and buildings weren’t built for fixed sums of money – costs were approximated. Barnwood always tried to be more definitive in supplying costs. We were also always prepared to work with clients to develop the solutions they were comfortable with. “Frank Evans tried to make sure we worked on a wide range of projects each year, mostly industrial or commercial but also; schools like Cheltenham Boys College, pubs like the Basketmaker in Quedgeley, health centres like Rikenel Health Centre, Gloucester and the occasional residential project. “Frank and Bert were always aware of how important our people are and that continues today. Our philosophy is that good men gather together and good skilled people like working with good skilled others. So, once someone good was employed all steps possible were taken to look after and keep them and train them to make them even better. Similarly, good subcontractors were always made to feel valued too. “While Frank looked after the building side, Bert Davies controlled the internal production systems and managed work through the internal departments, like joinery.

“Early Shopfitting clients included WH Smith, Leeds Permanent Building Society and The Halifax. In the late 70s the shopfitting division was called Barnwood Joinery but by the mid 80s became Barnwood Shopfitting, as it is now. “With the 80s and 90s we were moving into the age of the property developer. Developers we have worked with over the years include private developer Norman Davis, Robert Hitchins and Ladbrokes to name but a few. “As we notch up our 50th anniversary we intend to continue to build on our success – so here’s to the next 50 years.” Building projects completed this year include the new Moreton-in-Marsh Community Hospital and the Haskins Garden Centre at Roundstone, West Sussex. Other recent landmark contracts include the refurbishment and flats conversion of the Biddle and Shipton, Reynolds and Vinings warehouses in Gloucester Docks, a three storey newbuild Pure Offices building in Oldbury and the Kestrel Court office and studio workshop complex at Waterwells, Gloucester. The glories of “Flaming June” have passed, leaving only memories of battered plants, rose-balled roses and long days wrapped up against the cold. I feel that it would be remiss of me not to mention the appalling weather that we have all been subject to. None may escape its vagaries, save for a brief sojourn to parts foreign. We gardeners must carry on and deepen our experiential stoicism. There is no real point in becoming angry... indeed it is a fools rage, blinded by lack of purpose. Cutting the grass has become a challenge. Being able to gain enough dry time to cut all of the lawns at Sudeley has been virtually impossible and on a couple of occasions we have had to cut in the rain. If you have not cut grass in the wet, I cannot suggest that you try it! The drought of March and its parched, brown lawns could almost be from a different decade. The ducks at the Castle are having a particularly good year and we have been witness to three separate hatchings. The yard at feeding time is even more chaotic than it was in the early spring. The dour weather appears to have silenced the swifts. Robbed of the azure blue that best suits them they skulk near ground level in silent protest. Masters of the air, a scything shadow, they are the last of our migrant birds to arrive and the first to leave. The swifts’ numbers have begun to decline nationally. One of the reasons for the rapid decrease in their numbers is the unsympathetic treatment of their former nesting sites: they nest in roof space of old buildings.

gardening

As more buildings are restored and improved, access for swifts has become harder. The loss of nest sites has led to an inevitable population crash. I am not an avid bird watcher, but would encourage you all to visit the RSPB website. They are conducting a survey with the aim of gaining an insight into areas of swift population. The information gained will be used to help understand the best way to proceed. They also have useful information and links showing how you can identify the bird and help stall the decline of this marvellous avian friend. The idea of a summer sky devoid of their joyous wheeling and diving is one best not considered. We must always remember that we are as much a part of the natural world as the next creature. As they begin to decline, our own existence is gradually belittled. So, plans for this month: dead-head your roses, prune back any extension growth on your climbers and be careful with any ladders that you use... Oh, and contact the RSPB! PHLOX with Camilla Bassett-Smith

Gloucestershire Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has a Chelsea Gold Medal and was part of the production team for BBC Gardeners’ World. She is currently working as the horticultural consultant on a new BBC gardening makeover programme to be seen on our screens in August. Here Camilla opens her heart on the subject of a romantic cottage garden stalwart...

JULY 2012

Native to America, yet this plant is as vital to an English herbaceous border as a roast potato is to our Sunday lunch. There are around 67 species of Phlox, from creeping to upright, from annual to perennial, providing flowers across the species from spring to autumn, but the best choice for your summer flowering cottage garden borders is the hardy perennial phlox paniculata. (The name paniculata refers to the flowers which occur in panicles or clusters). This was one of the first phlox to be cultivated and early selections appeared on the market in England at the start of the 18th Century. Further successful breeding of paniculata occurred in England during the mid 1900s, thanks to the work of Captain Bertram SymonsJeune and Alan Bloom. In fact Symons-Jeune’s daughter married into one of Britain’s great horticultural dynasties, that of the Loder family of rhododendron fame. Phlox paniculata add height to your border, with mops of fragranced flowers from pinks to purples and reds to whites. Particularly attractive are cultivars with contrasting centres, so a light pink with a darker eye such as ‘Bright Eyes’ is a popular choice. For an appropriate purchase in this jubilee year, a deep rose pink cultivar ‘Windsor’ should be on your list. Phlox, as with many other traditional cottage garden plants, were considered quite unfashionable in the 1970s and 1980s, but I am pleased to say that in

recent years we have seen a surge of interest in the herbaceous borders of times gone by. This, in addition to a trend to garden in a wildlife friendly fashion, has seen a rekindled love for the butterfly enticing phlox. There really is nothing like a wide border of phlox paniculata stretching its way along a lawn, like a satin ribbon of pink and white encasing a gift of the most exquisite scent. My Grandmother’s borders were always filled with paniculata, originally purchased from the old ‘Telling & Coates’ nursery in Charlton Kings. German nurseryman Karl Foerster is quoted as saying "a garden without phlox is an error!" I totally agree with him! Breeding today concentrates on increasing mildew resistance, introducing dwarf cultivars and increasing the number of breeds with variegated foliage. A fantastic example of a new variegated introduction is 'Frosted Elegance': the pink flowers that we all love, but with white edged leaves to add further interest and colour prior to flowering. Phlox favour a rich soil and a site in sun or partial shade, and in the language of flowers stand for united souls, so a good choice for a harmonious family garden! As we welcome the Olympics to our country this month, it seems highly appropriate to be singing the praises of the phlox, a word which in Greek means ‘flame’! CS

Strawberry Laser Lipo Want to achieve instant inch loss? Now you can painlessly and safely achieve permanent fat removal with the Strawberry Laser Lipo, the latest revolutionary technology in non surgical liposuction – clinically proven to be as effective as traditional surgical liposuction with up to 30% reduction in the fat layer depth after just one treatment.

For further information contact: music@rendcomb.gloucs.sch.uk or email info@beyondeternityproductions.com

The laser is a class 3b red laser and emits low levels of laser energy into the fat layer. The electrical charge in the fat cell membranes are disrupted releasing intra-cellular fat. This causes the cell to lose its round shape by changing the permeability of the cell membrane. This does not affect the neighbouring structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves and is very safe. Before & After Lipo Treatment Triglycerides, or fatty acids, spill our from the broken cell membranes and are released into the interstitial space, where they are slowly transported through the body’s natural metabolic functions, with no adverse physiological effects. They are used by the body as an energy source, just as if you were dieting and using your body fat for energy.

Blushes STYLE Pod takes expertise to another level Reinvent yourself at Blushes with the launch of their unique consultation service... the ‘style pod’

What sets a hair salon apart from the rest? There are many elements... the level of hairdressing, the atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff, choice of refreshments and so much more. It’s crucial to get everything just right but at Blushes the focus has always been on getting to know the client and gently uncovering what suits them and why. This expertise is unrivalled anywhere in the country because quite simply style expertise is BLUSHES thing.

‘It’s what we do best’ say co-founders Darrell & Mark Blake who saw their STYLE POD concept launched this month. ‘We’ve always been renowned for the level of our consultation, it’s really become the ‘core element’ of what’s special about Blushes... over the years this expertise has progressed beyond anything that other salons provide and providing a ‘discreet space’ was the obvious thing to do. So the Style Pod was launched, a special space just for consultation! The Blushes Style Pod is somewhere where you can sit face to face with a Style Expert and discuss exactly what you want from your experience at Blushes. It takes the experience miles away from just a stylist standing behind you talking to the mirror. It’s 30 minutes of intense YOU time where you can be taken through colour and style choices and really get under the skin of why certain styles and colours suit you and how to unravel the very best version of yourself. An in-depth service is priced at incredible £10 including your own prescriptive style pod card to remind you of your key style points. This is then deducted off your follow up hair appointment so in effect it’s actually complimentary. Think of it as ‘the best 30 minutes that any one (women or guys) can spend on themselves. It’s the perfect confidence booster, preinterview experience, first job style experience, or just a life ‘pick me up’. We all know what the best possible version of ourselves can look like. This experience just helps you to get there quicker. The Cotswold Style team will certainly be booking their Style Pod appointment right now so get in quick if you want an appointment. cosmetic dentistry

The benefits from smiling reach more than just one person at a time and this month we show you where you can achieve yours...

CIRENCESTER DENTAL PRACTICE Cosmetic dentistry is the most gratifying element of dentistry and is truly life changing for those that delve in! Research by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists has shown that over 80 per cent of people notice a persons smile the first time they meet someone, and can make an instant judgment based on that smile. Changing a smile can boost massively self esteem and self confidence – to levels that even surprises me still. However it is a very challenging and technique sensitive process and one that should be undertaken only by appropriately trained professionals. There are organisations in the UK which help to train and promote best practice for dentists in the UK such as the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry – and if you are thinking of undertaking costly and very involved cosmetic procedures then you should look for dentists who are members of organisations such as these. Choose Cirencester Dental and Implant Practice Tel. 01285 640248 for experienced cosmetic clinicians. THE REGENCY HOUSE DENTAL PRACTICE We offer a full range of modern routine and cosmetic dental care. Want to fight for your fitness? Q A

Lucy Davis, founder of Windrush Fitness, reveals how she is the first to bring the celebrity craze ‘Piloxing’ to the Cotswolds and why it’s the best way to get fit for the summer...

Q A

What is Piloxing?

How is this exercise any different? Piloxing is the first programme that blends muscle sculpting of Pilates, the strengthening of boxing and the fun of dance all in one format. The combination of these disciplines keeps classes fun and fresh, whilst sticking to techniques that have been scientifically proven to be cutting edge for Weightloss. Barefoot training is encouraged as it improves posture, balance stamina and prevent injuries. Piloxing is a complete cardio-vascular workout which will keep the heart healthy, reduce fat, and will keep you in better shape. Rather than just focusing on one type of exercise, Piloxing covers all three, giving you the individual benefits from each one such as flexibility from Pilates, Agility from boxing and free movement from dancing.

A combination of boxing and Pilates, Piloxing beautifully unites the power, speed and agility of boxing with the sculpting and flexibility of Pilates. The contrasts of the two sports complement each other nicely, whilst burning the calories. Using the most current science with formats such as interval and barefoot training, Piloxing is designed to burn maximum calories and increase stamina. As the idea of Swedish dancer and celebrity trainer Vivica Jensen, the new work-out has made a huge impact on celebrities, with the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Vanessa Hudgens and Hilary Duff amongst the devoted Hollywood following. Since founding the Piloxing academy in 2010, Viveca has spread the word and trained over 2,000 instructors worldwide.

Q A

Q A

What made you want to bring it to the Cotswolds? First discovering Piloxing in a newspaper article about the latest Hollywood crazes, I was curious about how the combination of boxing and Pilates would work together. I love boxing and I teach Callanetics, which has a lot in similar with Pilates, so I ordered one of Viveca’s DVDs. I have never had so much fun doing a high energy workout in my life. I have never sweated so much either! If celebrities can have these amazing bodies why can’t we? I saw that we have nothing like this before and I wanted to bring it to my fitness centre in Bourton-on-the-Water. It’s such an exciting new way to exercise; I immediately contacted the Academy about becoming a trainer.

Q A

Why should we exercise?

There are many benefits to exercising, physically and mentally. Not only do you want to look good, but JULY 2012

you want to feel good. In today’s hectic lifestyle it may seem hard to fit in time to exercise, but with only 30 minutes of cardio recommended daily, a great body and huge confidence is achievable. Whilst giving you great health benefits, exercise can also reduce the risk of major illnesses such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease by up to 50%. Obesity in the UK has more than tripled in the last 25 years causing the Government to encourage more people to exercise. Rather than treat working-out as a chore, there are many ways to enjoy losing the weight and burning the calories.

How much will it cost?

As the only fitness centre in the Cotswolds that offer this particular form of exercise and more, we offer a range of different offers and prices so there is something for everyone. A monthly unlimited offer cost of £99 covers all classes at the fitness centre and could save you up to £30 a month. A personal tuition and training lesson costs £35 per hour or only £150 for 5 sessions. After holding taster classes at the studio in Bourton-on-the-Water to show the clientele how exciting this exercise is, there has been a lot of positive feedback. “Love it, love it, love it!” and “that was so much fun!” are just a couple of the student comments after just one class. There are 4 classes a week scheduled on the timetable with times to suit everyone. Gloucester housing

comment

Photograph by Nick Clark

A recent article in The Times featured Gloucester as a place to live. The article accurately highlighted some of the city’s strengths – a great location, a number of high-performing schools and good value for money property compared with many other places. Mind you, not all of the article was spot-on. Horrendous though the floods of 2007 were, I would dispute that the whole city was “submerged”. Some of our less attractive buildings are not due to Gloucester being bombed during the war – it’s more the bulldozer than the bomber we have to thank for that. And I’d like to know how to buy a home in College Green for £350,000 when the Cathedral authorities maintain a vice-like grip on ownership of its precincts. Housing in the city has changed over time. Living in the city centre used to be the choice of many of the wealthy – and some of the houses are still there. 26

Westgate Street, recently featured on Griff Rhys Jones’s television programme “Britain’s Lost Routes”, is one of the finest 16th century Merchants Houses in the country. St Nicholas House, also highlighted on the same programme, was the townhouse of the Whittington family of Pauntley and Ladybellegate House was home to the Raikes family. Even Blackfriars Priory, recently opened as an event venue by the City Council, was a private dwelling in the 16th century. The area around Gloucester Park was also home to many of the local nobility and businesspeople until relatively recently. The houses were then seen to be too big for single dwellings when the more wealthy took flight from the city and were gradually converted to flats and bedsits. Since the Park itself was regenerated, the area surrounding it has started to lift.

JULY 2012

Gloucester’s housing stock is fairly short supply at the top end of the market. There are only 180 properties in council tax Band G and just 7 in Band H out of over 54,000 in the city. There does seem to be a ceiling of around £700,000 for which properties in the city will sell – unless you get slightly beyond the city boundaries where are our “stately homes” of Highnam Court, Hardwicke Court and Elmore Court stand. That’s not to say there aren’t some attractive properties within the city, because there certainly are. And they tend to be sprinkled around almost every part of Gloucester. Brunswick Square, known as Gaudy Green during the Civil War, is made up of attractive Regency townhouses and even boasts the City MP as a resident. Hempsted, as Gloucester’s only “village”, is much sought-after and can offer some truly stunning views. Properties in parts of Stroud Road have long been seen as having real status. And parts of Matson, Hucclecote, Barnwood and my own patch of Longlevens can be pretty desirable too. The newly-converted Docks apartments have a certain cache. Although most are fairly standard one and two bedroom homes, each warehouse has a penthouse apartment or two which can be very special – particularly the new build duplex ones on the West Quay. The Lock Warehouse, formerly home to Gloucester Antiques Centre, is the latest to undergo residential conversion. When I took another Times property journalist on a walking tour of the city a couple of years ago, she asked whether The Deanery would sell for around £1 million. I responded that I didn’t know as it had never been for sale. I teased the new Dean about living in a £1 million house and he joked that he used to live in a £2 million property in St Albans! The Deanery aside, I don’t think there is a £1 million house in Gloucester. The city’s housing needs are many and varied, but when a few more of our properties make it onto the pages of magazines like Cotswold Style, I think it will be a sign that our regeneration has reached another level! it’s still OK to invest

investment

Independent Financial Adviser Brian Morman answers some of the more frequently-asked questions about investment. The on-going uncertainty in the financial markets has, not surprisingly, made many people nervous about saving and investments. A recent survey by YouGov SixthSense (www.totalinvestor.co.uk, 6 June 2012), ‘discovered’ that the majority of consumers have lost trust in banks and building societies. Mmmm. A classic case of stating the obvious, perhaps? But the survey also highlighted the fact that consumers do place trust in long-established financial firms that are motivated to help their customers and make good on their promises. As an IFA, I find that very encouraging, as it boldly underlines my personal approach, and the approach taken by my colleagues at Brunsdon, to delivering the quality advice and support our clients deserve. Having said that, all clients, even seasoned investors, naturally harbour concerns. These are some of the questions I am often asked.

Q A

The financial markets are depressed. Why should I invest now? Investments follow a distinct pattern. History shows that the lean times of market volatility and instability, such as the ones we are experiencing right now, are invariably followed by periods of sustained growth. No-one knows how long the current episode of stagnation will persist, but what is clear is that money invested now will buy more of your chosen shares or fund units. Like everything else, you get more for your money when prices are low. This is a good medium-to-long term investment strategy.

Q A

But why should I even need to save or invest at all? It’s an undisputed fact that we are all living longer. We can reasonably expect to spend at least a third of our lives in retirement. Maybe 30 or 40 years during which we will have to fund our own lifestyles. We can no longer assume the State will provide because it simply

JULY 2012

won’t be able to afford it. That’s another undisputed fact. I always advise clients that a good rule of thumb is to adopt the 80:20 habit. Spend 80% of your income on day-to-day living, but put aside 20% for the future.

Q A

How will I know how much I am being charged for financial advice? I agree that the old, commissionbased way of paying for the service was always a murky area as far as consumers were concerned. But that’s set to change from the end of this year as the Government’s Retail Distribution Review comes into effect. That’s when all IFAs will have to set out their stalls and charge set fees for the advice and services they dispense. You’ll be able to see upfront just how much it will cost you and what you are getting for your money. This means you will also be able to make comparisons with other firms. It’s all about transparency. At Brunsdon, our fee-based system of remuneration was established some years ago, in line with our policy of treating customers fairly.

Q A

What investment options will I be offered? That depends on a number of factors and the firm with which you are dealing. Certainly in the first analysis, I and my colleagues would undertake a full financial profiling exercise to understand your attitude to risk and objectives. In effect, together we’d establish a financial game plan for you. We are able to offer a huge range of investment options, which could include managed funds, multi-managed funds, risk-based model portfolios, discretionary fund management, guaranteed funds and Cotswold Asset Management, with its institutional-style investment techniques for individuals and well-proven volatility management. I need to point out of course that investment returns cannot be guaranteed and can fall as well as rise.

Q A

Will I then be ‘left on my own?’ Not at all. Our ongoing advice and recommendations will form an important part of your agreed Service Level. We understand that your circumstances and priorities may change. Your investment portfolio will almost certainly need to be rebalanced on a regular basis to ensure it keeps on track with your objectives. If you have any other questions or concerns about any aspect of saving and investment, please do not hesitate to contact me.

prenuptial agreements making an impact

business

Elizabeth Bruce, solicitor and collaborative family lawyer at Rickerbys shares her advice... Over recent years, the legal status of Pre-Nuptial Agreements in this country has changed. Lawyers had previously advised their clients for many years that Pre-Nuptial Agreements are not binding in English Law. However, the reality as a result of the Radmacher – v Granatino case is that Pre-Nuptial Agreements now have the ability to certainly influence or in some cases even determine the manner in which our Courts exercise its discretion when making a decision as to how the financial assets of a marriage should be divided between divorcing couples. The case of Radmacher concerned a couple where the wife was from Germany and the husband was from France who had entered into a Pre Nuptial Agreement that would be legally binding in both those countries. On the Continent, matrimonial property regimes are also very common where couples adopt a regime as to how their property is held prior to marriage. The regime is then applied in the event of divorce. However, this is something that is not recognised by the UK Courts. The case of Radmacher did not deal specifically with how the Court should deal with matrimonial property regimes and this is an issue that has now been tackled by the High Court in the case of Z -v- Z. This involved a French couple who JULY 2012

with Elizabeth Bruce had married in 1994 and financial matters in relation to their divorce were decided in 2011. This was therefore viewed as a long marriage. As required by French law, the parties had entered into a property regime and had nominated a “separation of property regime” prior to their marriage. They moved to London in 2007 and as such the wife issued divorce proceedings in this country. The wife argued to the Court that the property regime did not represent a fair result. Rather, she argued the Court should firstly take into consideration her financial needs and then after that apply the principle of sharing the assets. The Court acknowledged that in normal circumstances this case would be appropriate for an Order providing for an equal division of assets between the parties. However, following the Radmacher case, the husband argued that the matrimonial property regime should be upheld. Eventually, the Court decided that there should be a disproportionate split of the matrimonial assets in the husband’s favour and the wife was

awarded in the region of 40% of the total assets. The departure from the property regime was to take into consideration the wife’s potential claim for maintenance against the husband. Clearly therefore the decision was a departure from the regime that the parties had elected in France. However, it is just as clearly a departure from what would otherwise have been an Order for an equal division of the matrimonial assets between the parties, which demonstrates the effect Pre Nuptial Agreements or such issues can have on the Court’s decision making. Divorcing parties therefore can no longer rely on the Courts in this country to protect them from the laws and issues that arise in other jurisdictions and as such any agreements entered into out of this country can and may be applied by the courts here. putting you first

business

Branch Manager, Di Pitts, introduced me to her team in their friendly and welcoming town centre offices, to discover more about the bank that does so much more than what it says on the tin…

Q A

What can customers expect from you? David Pye, Corporate Banking Manager: As you can see, we’re a small team here and as a result we know one another very well, and make the point of getting to know our customers. Unlike other banks, we sit down with you, have a coffee and really spend time finding out exactly what is it that is best for you and your investment. There is a real sense of intimacy and there is no centralised call centre to contend with. One of our customers lives just across the road and pops in for a chat and a cup of coffee... or tea, we offer both! We have an established customer base and we love the fact that when customers come to see us they say “Wow, this is so different for a bank!” Sometimes we even let them make the coffee!

Q A

Handelsbanken Westmoreland House 80-86 Bath Road Cheltenham Tel: 01242 224535 www.handelsbanken.co.uk

JULY 2012

What is the best part of your job? Louise Griffiths, Individual Banking Manager: Being trusted and encouraged to get on and do the job means that we can have fun at the same time and this translates to the customer. As a team, we each feel appreciated and valued for the vast amount of experience that we all have and we are able to run things as we see fit, with no impossible targets as we’re working towards one common aim. It means that things are not as restrictive as in other environments and we have a great atmosphere in the office. It’s a real family environment. Working for a Swedish company places emphasis on a work/life balance and recognises the importance of family time. Our CEO visits us her in Cheltenham and knows each of us by name. He guides our business through stormy waters and once again we are the strongest European bank in Europe.

Q

You recently celebrated your first birthday here in Cheltenham, how did you celebrate? Mandy Ackrill, Documentation Manager: We invited 97 guests to Ellenborough Park to join us for Champagne and canapés, to say a huge thank you to our customers. Clients mixed with professionals so it was a fantastic networking event too. We read them a poem rather than boring them with a speech! We like to think that we’re a breath of fresh air to those left feeling jaded by other banks. We have a team meeting each day and eat lunch together and it’s that communication that keeps us on track to achieving our goals. One man was even tweeting while he was at the party to say how great it was.

A

Q A

What’s next for you?

Di Pitts, Branch Manager: I’m delighted with how successful this past year has been and am looking forward to continued growth. We will turn people away… but only for the right reasons. And perhaps when their circumstances change and they are better suited to banking with us then they will return and thank us for our initial honesty. We don’t give people an hour long slot. Our customers matter and they can have as much time as they need. We’re not here for the short term and we don’t want our customers for the short term either. We now have 128 branches and we are reaching so many more people through customers talking about us and because of that we are reaching so many more people. We’ve even been talked about on the terraces of Norwich City Football Club! CS

Julie Randall is a welcoming, astute and positive businessperson. It’s easy to see that she is a person both at home and happy in her chosen career. Julie qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1987 and moved into industry where she gained her experience in the engineering and financial sectors. “I’d always known that I wanted to be a professional person and I have a very logical brain”, Julie says, “Accountancy was something that I knew was meant for me.” In 2002, Julie joined Vero as Group Financial Controller and was appointed Finance Director in 2003. With its headquarters in Cheltenham, Vero software designs, develops and supplies CAD/CAM/CAE software that radically enhances the efficiency of design and manufacturing processes. In October last year, Vero announced a merger with Planit Holdings. The combined businesses have a projected turnover of £40 million and the company employs 29 people here in Cheltenham and over 400 at other offices both in the UK and around the world. Julie lives in Ashleworth with her husband and two children. “My father was in the Air Force and so growing up we moved around a lot”, Julie explains, JULY 2012

“but we settled here in Gloucestershire and I met my husband at University. We initially lived with my parents following completion of our Degrees and, as luck had it, we were both offered jobs here. I love living here. I was once offered the opportunity to move away for work but declined since I didn’t want to leave the area.” After qualifying, Julie decided to work in industry and this was very much a conscious decision. She says, “I was after an instrumental role in business and business is what interests me. I didn’t want to just walk into an office, tick a report and say yes you’ve added it up properly!” Her first role in industry was with Corin Medical. From Corin Medical, Julie moved into an internal audit team to learn more about business and then crossed to Trinity Insurance as Operations Manager. Sadly the company got into difficulties and so as life so often has a habit of working things out, Julie found herself at the perfect point to start a family and in 1993 gave birth to her daughter. She worked from home but a return to the workplace was firmly in her sights, she recalls “As many women do, I worked remotely for some time but missed the social interaction and after having our son I returned to work full time.” “I joined Vero in June 2002 and it was very much an opportunity to learn so many new things. There was so much going on that I had to pick up very quickly and although at times I was apprehensive, I think it’s important to always challenge yourself and push the boundaries. There is something so liberating about stepping

out of one’s comfort zone and learning on your feet,” Julie says A positive outlook is a great motivator for this trailblazer and she tells me that she is content in the knowledge that she is really very happy and has no regrets. “I’m just where I am and who I am. If you go for it, it will work out. Optimism is key. I’ve asked a lot of my team over the past year and we work hard but remain positive and focused.” Julie says. When asked what advice she would offer to others, Julie firmly believes in the importance of gaining professional qualifications since they open doors to you and afford you a certain amount of credibility. And on a more personal note, I ask how her friends would describe her. “Oh, I don’t know, cheerful and positive I would hope!” Julie says. I throw “Inspirational?” into the mix and am met with an “Oh gosh, no!” But I’m afraid that I have to disagree. CS

estate planning An Inheritance isn’t all about the Tax.

PHOTOGRAPH WWW.ALLINTHEIMAGE.CO.UK

Inheritance Tax (IHT) in the UK is charged at 40% on the value of the estate that exceeds the Nil Rate Band – currently £325,000. It is possible to carry forward the Nil Rate Band between spouses which means that potentially £650,000 can be sheltered from Inheritance Tax. We look to try and assist clients to reduce their Inheritance Tax as much as possible within the rules allowed!!

Q A

What view do your clients take in relation to Inheritance Tax? At Montpellier Asset Management we recognise that our clients have different circumstances and needs, but many of their underlying concerns are the same. The primary focus for many clients is that they want to pay less tax and where possible no tax! Some clients even take the view that their estate will receive sufficient cash and assets and that it is only fair that their beneficiaries should pay some tax. What joins these two extreme view points together from a client’s perspective is that they wish to ensure that their beneficiaries’ financial future is secure.

For a free consultation with Simon to understand where he can make a difference to your finances see his details below. simon@montpellierasset.com; tel: 01242 530999; www.montpellierasset.com

For our guide on Inheritance Tax and methods of tax mitigation please get in touch by phone, email or letter. JULY 2012

Q A

Other than Inheritance Tax what worries your clients the most? Clients looking to create a legacy that lasts are often worried about the possibility of their beneficiaries taking business risks that expose them to bankruptcy or marriages that could end in a potential dispute leading to a divorce tax of 50%! Other clients just feel that their beneficiaries have not had enough experience with money and that a significant cash sum may not be invested wisely or even worse squandered until it is all gone. We look at a range of methods to help clients structure their financial affairs with as much flexibility as possible, but

also in such a way that works within the Inheritance Tax rules. Trusts are very useful and while some clients are put off by trusts they can be hugely effective when managed correctly. They also protect assets from tax, possible bankruptcy and divorce. There are some complexities in this area especially around divorce and this subject can be discussed in further detail where relevant to the client.

Q A

Could clients simply leave the UK to avoid paying Inheritance Tax? A UK person (technically referred to as a UK Domicile) is liable to Inheritance Tax on their worldwide assets. It does not matter whether the asset is cash in a Swiss bank account or a property in the South of France, Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will look to tax the asset at 40%. It is very common for us to meet with clients who are looking to leave the UK or have already left the UK who feel that they no longer have a liability to IHT after they have departed. HMRC do not generally make it easy for UK tax payers to escape the tax net. In order for a client to move abroad and claim that they are no longer liable to UK IHT they must have shed all ties with the UK and show no intention to return for anything other than occasional holidays. Richard Burton lived overseas but was buried in Wales and this was enough for him to still be linked to the UK and result in a significant IHT liability! Inheritance Tax planning is a complicated area and failure to exercise the planning correctly can result in a more complex situation with additional taxes to pay. We would welcome the opportunity to speak with you, to understand your circumstances and to see where our specialist knowledge can be used to help you and your family. CS

Finally we reach the month that can be properly considered ‘summer’. Children finishing school, temperatures (hopefully) rising and the prospect of holidays rapidly approaching all add to the excitement of the month. Time then, to consider one of the most important decisions you may have to make this year, what you will wear on the beach. For men, it’s simple. Shorts, even of variable length, are always acceptable. Tight skimpy swimwear is not. Unless you are diving in to the pool in the hope of an Olympic medal in London this summer you should never seriously consider the sort of diminutive lycra briefs that we expect to see hugging the rears of our aqua Olympians. For women however, it is not so simple. Something I found out after monumentally putting my foot in it recently with the girlfriend. After nearly thirteen years of relationship you may hope I would have developed the capacity for tact, but for some reason asking “you are not going to wear that thing you wore last year, are you?” is not

an appropriate conversation opener. ‘That thing’ being a sort of bikini, but with camisole top and skirt attached to it. Which I now know, after patient explanation, was bought with the intention that it could double as suitable sunbathing and beach wear, as well as being appropriate for wear to, and from the beach. Unfortunately, in my humble opinion, bearing in mind I am no Gok Wan, whilst on the beach, the said swimwear was just too much. Too much fabric, it covered too much and it didn’t seem to me to be all that suitable for wearing in the water. I should perhaps stress at this point that I have no real opinion as to how much flesh my girlfriend wishes to expose on the beach, I simply come at this from the angle of wanting her to be comfortable and happy in what she wears. I am pretty certain there are no body confidence issues at stake here, my girlfriend is no supermodel yet beautiful in my eyes, and my suggestion that she buy a well fitted one piece swimsuit was met with disdain. Foreign beaches are perhaps the only place you can wear a bikini and not feel naked, so I’m told. So I’ve learnt a lesson, keep my nose out and say nothing that could be construed as critical of her summer fashion choices and god forbid, her body. I think I saved the situation by ensuring her that I will make time for me to have the children so she can shop for holiday clothes to her heart’s content, without any inexpert advice from me. My shorts will be the first thing in the case, and if you want my sartorial take on how they should be worn; one inch above the knee, definitely no longer. CS

000 Ellenborough Park Interview July 2012:Layout 1

21/06/2012

17:06

Page 111

interview

Eric Barton meets up with General Managers, Graham Vass and John Hanna of Ellenborough Park Hotel.

Just outside Cheltenham there’s a nirvana of undulating green parkland that stretches from Prestbury to Winchcombe, providing the perfect canvass for one of the UK’s best hotels. Hugging the lower reaches of Cleeve Hill, Ellenborough Park Spa Hotel majestically spreads its fingers across this elegant vista. There’s been a changing of the guard at Ellenborough Park Hotel as the sword of managerial responsibility has now been handed over. No fuss, no fist fights, no handbags at dawn. In fact it’s been like a good cocktail dress, seamless. The outgoing General Manager Graham Vass is an extremely affable South African with a delightful accent to boot. It’s rakish safari hats; it’s lions in the bush and tanned men in tents. He was in every sense a ‘Mogambo’ moment. After opening the hotel for the Mantis Group in the freezing snows of 2011, Graham Vass has now passed the reins of responsibility to the new General Manager John Hanna. Like two friendly cockerels, Graham Vass and John Hanna haven’t danced around each other like posturing alpha males to ease the passage of change. It’s been a handover of generous collaboration. Simple as that. Outgoing politicians and London Mayors take note. The new General Manager, John Hanna has a ready smile and elegant way with him. Unlike distant drums, he’s very clear about the future of Ellenborough Park and his commitment to continuity of service and standards. As a young man John wanted to be a chef. And that’s where it ended; in the wanting. He says,’ I love cooking but at that level I just didn’t have the talent’. His career, like most people who are any good in the hotel industry, started at the bottom. Back in the eighties when pop nonsense ‘Kajagoogoo’ were annoying everybody, John Hanna had a small sojourn managing a 400 - seat restaurant with the redoubtable Bernie Inn Corporation. This it transpired whetted his appetite for JULY 2012

a career in hotel management. After two years and a spell working locally for a small entrepreneurial hotel group (where he reached General Manager at 21yrs of age) John took to the high seas to explore the world as a steward with P&O Cruises. He said ’it’s the hardest work I’ve ever done’. Time tumbled on and in 1986 with a degree of hard toil behind him and some seaborne grit, John Hanna eventually found himself at the renowned Cliveden House Hotel in Berkshire (initially as Assistant Restaurant Manager and then eventually as Hotel Manager). The next ten years flew by in an award - winning epoch, as John and the Cliveden House team scooped just about every industry bauble possible. The Cliveden Group expanded its operation and in 1996 John went to work at their head office. In 2002 he joined The Mantis Group (who operate Ellenborough Park) becoming a Director of the UK company and has been actively involved with Ellenborough Park since the investors purchased the property in 2007. John arrived at Ellenborough Park last December to engage in a period of hand over with Graham Vass. In a blink it seems that

John Hanna has gone from serving Irish coffees in the eighties, through sailing the seven seas, to reaching this lofty height. All earned through sheer hard work, determination, a passion for the industry and accepting no compromises on standards or service. John further says, ‘I firmly believe in hiring the values and training the skills. In any hotel operation the staff is crucial’. John finally comments, ‘I actually like hotels, but I’m not the best guest, I’m always looking around to see what can be done better’. The litany of awards that Ellenborough Park is currently winning must be making other hotels grimace with jealousy. They are the World Travel Awards leading UK country house hotel, 2011 and are also finalists in the Employer of the Year Awards. Seeing eye to eye is about belief and trust. Even the most myopic critic couldn’t miss spotting that these two gents are from the same mould. It’s been good for them and it’s ultimately good for us. Treat yourself...

Food writer, Ali Nightingale, reviews the new menu to tantalise your taste buds at Hotel du Vin Spring is a time to take stock, refresh and renew – and that’s exactly what’s happened at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham as it launches two new menus. The hotel, one of Hotel du Vin’s 14 properties across the UK, is delighted to introduce a new lunch menu for quicker, less formal lunches with colleagues or friends and to announce a revised à la carte menu. The new lunch menu offers one, two or three courses for £9.95, £12.95 and £14.95 respectively, as well as a selection of salads, sandwiches and tartines, giving diners the flexibility to enjoy Hotel du Vin’s delicious cuisine even when time is short. The new à la carte menu retains its great grill section with delicious dry aged steaks that have been matured for at least 28 days, but returns to the classics of French bistro dining in its choices for all courses. On the reverse of the à la carte menu there is also a hand-picked selection of great wines for all palates and purses. This allows the diner to make a quicker wine choice if desired, but there is still the full Hotel du Vin expansive wine list of 500 vintages to choose from. The dessert menu helpfully suggests wine or digestif pairings. Signature dishes for the new menu are as follows: JULY 2012

To start: French Onion Soup and Chicken Liver Parfait, Toasted Brioche, Raisin Chutney Main Course: Moules du Vin, Frites, Lemon Sole Meunière, Normandy Chicken Dessert: Baba au Rhum, Chocolate Pavé The other thing to remember at Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is that there are three great private dining rooms and the Laroche Tasting room to sample wine. So the Hotel du Vin Cheltenham can serve their great new menu to groups of friends or colleagues in beautiful private spaces for celebrations, company meetings and away days. At what cost?

Former Cheltenham Town football star Shane Duff turned football coach comments on kids in sport

‘THE PROBLEM CAN BE GREATER WHEN FAMILIES HAVE MULTIPLE CHILDREN TO LOOK AFTER’

JULY 2012

Cost of putting kids in after school clubs and holiday camps. EXTORTION OR MONEY WELL SPENT? After spending time in the coaching industry at all levels I have been able to see firsthand the different offerings available to children in the area. In my opinion clubs and sports available are plentiful and very well run, but at what cost? Gone are the days where all schools are able to offer after school clubs free of charge. Schools and their teachers are pushed for time so much so that these clubs are run by external businesses. These companies are specialists in their field and put a price on access to their activity. I have said in previous editorials that clubs like these can have a huge positive impact on a child’s personal development and children should be involved. So this argues that the money is well spent surely? I don’t think companies can be frowned upon for charging fees as they are running these clubs very well and as a business. They have bills to pay like the rest of the country. Also the cost of professional childcare can be high and these clubs are often available for a lesser price, so money can be saved by using these clubs. The problem can be greater when families have multiple children to look after. Club costs can become very high. And families that cannot afford this, the children lose out. So is there enough out there to support children’s activities and

development if money is tight? I have recently become heavily involved the company ‘Footballers Careers’ which is ran by Julian Alsop (ex Cheltenham Town FC player and record league goal scorer). Julian has gone into partnership with the YMCA (a local charity) to promote a great service at very low cost. Julian previously offered football camps in half terms for £10 per day, which I felt was very low. Since partnering up with the YMCA it has been reduced to £5 per day. The YMCA has aims and their “main objective is meeting the needs of young people and creating personal development opportunities for all”. The response from parents has been fantastic. Some parents can now send their kids to these fun days out when previously they may not have been able to do so. This scheme does not make money; it is about raising accessibility to more children in Gloucestershire. More details on this can be found at www.footballerscareers.com Not all kids are into football so there is a need for other sports and activities. One that I am familiar with and can recommend is www.justcamps.co.uk . A range of activities available such us Multi-Sports, Dance, Olympics, Kids Zumba, Fun Team Games, Face Paints and Arts & Crafts. Wessex Gloucester Launch their Brands into the Spotlight The setting for The Gloucester Motor Show looked decidedly dreary on Friday 8th June, as Wessex Garages Gloucester arrived to set up for the weekend show, which ran from 9-10th June. Torrential rain meant one of the show organiser’s fifteen ton trucks began to churn up the picturesque grounds at Highnam Court House, before Estate owner Roger Head and his assistant Milly came to the rescue with a 4x4 and helped to tow the hospitality units onto the display ground.

By Friday afternoon, however, the sun had come out and Wessex’s star of the show, the latest Nissan GT-R, was gleaming in a patch of sunshine by Highnam Court’s lower lake. Wessex made the GT-R available to visitors at the motor show whilst raising money for The Pied Piper Charity appeal, who aim to improve the lives of sick children in Gloucestershire. Visitors who made a donation to the charity were taken for a drive in the supercar. Matthew Cripps, General Manager of Wessex Gloucester, has informed us that one Customer was so taken with the GT-R that he returned to the show and purchased the £75,000 car. The enthusiastic customer was local Gloucester Aerospace Engineer Mr Stan Lee. Mr Lee has been responsible for some very intricate aircraft designs, therefore is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to high performance and technology. We are sure he will be very satisfied with his new purchase. Wessex also had over 20 cars from the Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Fiat and Abarth ranges on display, with another focal point of the Wessex stand being the all new Kia Cee’d. The Cee’d is the latest in the Kia range from the Frankfurt design studios of Avan Garde Kia Designer Peter Schreyer. Wessex also attracted a lot of attention due to the all-electric, zero emission creation from Nissan, The Leaf. Matthew Cripps, General Manager of Wessex Garages Gloucester, would like to thank all of The Gloucester Motor Show organisers and every current, new and potential customer that visited the Wessex Team at the two-day event. In total Wessex took over £125,000 of new orders during the event, and can safely say they will be back at the Gloucester Motor Show in 2013. Shaun Taylor, of Car Trade Direct, has been with the garage for 17 years. He tells us what sets this business apart from the rest....

Q A

What is it that you do?

We make selling your car easy and offer two hassle free options. We offer to buy any used car immediately for cash or we will prepare and market your car for you on our prime location forecourt and advertise on leading car advertising web sites. You will receive the retail value less a pre-negotiated sales fee. Your car will be prepared for sale and we will handle the sale for you. The forecourt is in a prime location on the A38, which is secure and fully insured.

Q A

What sets you apart from the competition? We understand that selling your car can be a hassle. We offer fair, honest, professional individual advice, with two easy options to selling your car. We provide an honest valuation of your vehicle and strive to get you that price. If you are looking for an immediate sale we will buy any car for cash. We are local with over thirty years buying and selling experience and have been at the same forecourt for seventeen years. You can call at our office anytime or we will come to you. We offer honest professional advice, there are no hidden commission fees or deflated on line offers.

Q A

What are your future plans for the business? We are striving to make Car Trade Direct the one stop shop for selling you car in Gloucestershire. A dedicated car buying centre with the facility to sell your car.

Q A

What buying mistakes do you often see clients make? We see that people are quick to take deflated prices from large national online buying companies. Customers often comment that they have received a lower price than what they were originally quoted. Also selling your car privately can be time consuming and we see that privately the price being asked for the car is so close to garage retail price yet selling your car privately offers no car dealer facilities ie) finance, part exchange, warranty. interview

“Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob, Bob” Andrew Marshall: Interview with Robert Powell For many the mention of his name conjures up his portrayal of Jesus Christ in Franco Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth, but irrespective of your generation, Robert Powell, born in Salford, is one of those actors to whom everyone appears to have some form of affinity. “Studying at Manchester for a law degree, I was under pressure to get a degree. Having appeared in a week long College Revue of Comedy sketches, I knew there was more fun to be had elsewhere. However, it was after appearing in Beaumont’s ‘The Night of Burning Pestle’ that Prof. Hunt from the drama department suggested I change direction. I dropped the law degree and turned to drama. I didn’t have the right qualifications at the time, needing an ‘O’-level in English literature, but I quickly got that.” TV appearances followed a short spell at a repertory theatre, with the role of the scientist Toby Wren in the highly successful Doomwatch series of the 1970’s. This led to more success in a number of BBC drama serials. Although appearing as a member of the gang in The Italian Job, more in depth film roles came along. He chuckles as he recalls the role of Captain Walker in the highly successful Tommy: “That was great fun and even had the opportunity to roll about naked in a stream with Ann Margaret, which can’t be bad.” John Buchan’s, The Thirty Nine Steps is a Boy’s Own adventure story of the highest order. The third film version in 1978 saw Robert taking on the part of the adventurer Richard Hannay. Many years later, he reprised the role in Hannay, in the adaption of John Buchan’s short stories. To the envy of many, in 1975 he married Pan’s People dancer Bab’s Lord. “I had seen the girls several times at the BBC during rehearsal whilst working on JULY 2012

a documentary. Then one day in the canteen we were finally introduced. At the time I was very shy, so didn’t ask her out directly. In the end I invited them all out to dinner.” Jasper Carrott gave him the opportunity to return to his comedy roots in a series of sketches under the banner of The Detectives. “Jasper and I have been mates for years. When he was asked who he thought might play the part of Briggs he suggested me. He was laughed at: ‘he’ll never do anything like that’. I jumped at the chance. It would have been different if I had been asked to play his straight man, then it would have been a straight no.” Appearing at The Everyman in Doctor in the House with Joe Pasquale for the week 16th July, is now one of the increasing rare live performances by the man who spans the generations. “I was offered about 10 plays to appear in, but knowing the economic climate for 2012 was not looking good, I wanted to do something that was going to be fun, and attract a good size audience. Set in the 50’s it has a real saucy ‘seaside postcard’ feel to it, so together with playing the iconic Sir Lancelot Spratt, this was a perfect choice. It has been suggested that my stint in Holby City has helped with the medical references, but there are none in the play.” “This is the first time I have worked with Joe as the world of acting and comedy rarely cross. We are not together on the stage much, so share few laughs here. But off he is a really great guy. We make each other laugh.” What of the future. “For me age is totally irrelevant, you are as old as you feel. If you start mentioning it then you tend to be pigeon holed. I have no burning ambitions to do as I have done it all. So for me as long as I am able to keep on working then I am content.” CS

Eventing fans across the country will be rubbing their hands together with glee this month... If you love horses, you might have been feeling a little frustrated so far this year: The great British weather has led to the cancellation of countless equestrian events, including the world famous Badminton Horse Trials… and managing to get tickets to the Olympics has been, for many, rather hit and miss. But fear not, July brings the glorious Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park. Gatcombe is the Gloucestershire home of The Princess Royal – who can inevitably be seen wandering round the grounds, walkie talkie in hand, checking out the shops, watching the action and presenting the prizes. Olympic preview wise, her daughter Zara Phillips (pictured, previously competing at The Festival) is already entered, as well as William Fox-Pitt and Mary King who are all on the British Team. (We won’t know until nearer the date exactly who will be in the final list of competitors). I am always particularly keen to go to Gatcombe as the non-horsey element of my family love it so much. I don’t know how the organisers do it – such an enormously prestigious and high level sporting event at the home of a member of the Royal Family… that manages to feel so friendly and relaxed you could almost be at your local village show – until of course you notice the calibre of the competitors - dotted with several Olympians. The catering is fabulous and in true English countryside style, with rows of shops and stalls, a field is transformed into a mall. If you’ve never seen a Shetland Pony Grand National, please don’t miss it this year – on Saturday afternoon, the schedule of

entertainment in the Main Arena is brilliant. Dad goes for the Birds of Prey, Husband for the Pimms, Kids for the fairground rides and pony races and Mum likes to remember her daughter (me) receiving a trophy from Princess Anne having ridden round myself fifteen years ago (albeit the much smaller version of the competition later in the year). It is not often you can picnic on a Princess’s lawn while Olympic athletes perform in front of you. An old colleague of mine surprised me by turning up a few years ago with his entire family. Not one of them had ever ridden a horse, but champagne and shopping at the Royal address was too much to resist… now they go every year. In the end, the youngest daughter was so inspired, she took up riding and plans to compete there herself before she’s 30. Gatcombe Park, as I touched on before, manages to maintain a level of down to earth honesty where everyone is welcome and important and where you cannot fail to be entertained… yet it remains a stage for world class equestrian sport – right here on our doorstep. The Festival of British Eventing, presented by British Equestrian Trade Association is on from 13th to 15th July 2012 – earlier than usual this year due to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For a time table of attractions and to book tickets go to www.gatcombe-horse.co.uk. Family tickets are discounted and only available in advance. The Box Office number is 0843 208 7455. I very much look forward to seeing you there. CS
