editor’s foreword

This month we warmly welcome the return of the Gloucester Quays Food Festival and we are very excited to bring you an interview with the queen of cakes, Mary Berry. Ahead of her appearance at the Festival on 19th July, you can read the interview with the first lady of baking on page16 where she also discloses her top tips for baking. Last year we were blessed with sunshine when Gloucester played host to foodie heaven and we have our fingers crossed for more of the same this month. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet not only Mary, but also celebrity chefs Gino D’Acampo and James Martin over the weekend of 19th-21st July. Entry to the festival is free and makes for a perfect family day out and tickets to see the chefs perform their live demonstrations can be purchased online. For full details turn to page 20. Aside from the cheeky Italian that is Gino and Yorkshireman James, our very own Eric Barton interviews two of our finest local chefs this month. Turn to page 23 to find out who they are… Holiday season is in full swing this month as the summer holidays begin and Jodie Hart shares her top tips for keeping the whole family active on page 125. If you are entertaining friends or family on lazy, hazy summer nights then Shelle Duffin has not one, but three, creative canapés recipes for you to dazzle guests with ahead of a bbq or dinner party. Turn to page 99. We hope that you have a sunshine-filled month and if you are a blushing bride then don’t forget to email us with your wedding snaps to appear on our real weddings page. See you next month!

The

Queen of Cakes She’s the queen of cakes and the nation’s favourite baker. Her TV career spans more than four decades, and she has written over 40 best-selling cookery books. She continues to write books and present TV shows and is now known to a new generation of food lovers through the success of The Great British Bake Off and Great British Food Revival. She’s also one of my favourite cooks and we’re lucky enough to have her at this year’s Cotswold Style Day at The Gloucester Quays Food Festival

‘‘

WORDS: SARAH SPEAKMAN GIBBS I use the term cook rather than chef because Mary Berry always makes the point that she is definitely a cook. When I spoke to her about demonstrating at the Cotswold Style Day, I asked her what defines the difference between a cook and a chef and why this is important. Mary explains, until fairly recently, there was a huge division between chefs and cooks; chefs didn’t write books and if they did they wrote them for themselves whereas cooks wrote for other people, to teach them how to do it. On the whole, cooks did the cooking at home and chefs did cooking in restaurants. “A chef is trained to cook in a restaurant,” she says. “When I cook, I don’t have a brigade behind me; I do it all myself. A chef is always cooking for numbers and particular different styles.” So Mary, without the assistance of sous chefs and others in her kitchen, aims to make cooking easier for herself by keeping it simple. And this is why she enjoys teaching others her tried-andtested recipes and short-cuts through her books, TV and demonstrations. “I love the thought I am writing or showing them what they can do at home,” she

I always enjoy it because people are so warm, welcoming and enthusiastic,” she continues. “When you’re on stage and you look at all the eager smiling faces, it’s a great feeling adds with great enthusiasm. “And when they send me a picture of themselves or their children standing behind a pile of éclairs, I know they’ve made from one of my recipes, and I’ve inspired them to do it, I feel very proud.” This is why the doyenne of family cookery is excited about joining us this year, for the first time at The Gloucester Quays Food Festival. Loving her teaching above all, Mary Berry loves demonstrating. “I always enjoy it because people are so warm, welcoming and

enthusiastic,” she continues. “When you’re on stage and you look at all the eager smiling faces, it’s a great feeling.” And Mary promises to show us all recipes she hopes we’ll enjoy and want to go straight home and cook, which I’m sure we all will! “The Gloucester Quays Food Festival will be a great event because it’s a family outing and there is lots to see and plenty to try.” Mary Berry is the cook who inspires so many food-lovers and bakers, who is her inspiration? Mary explains she looks at all chefs and cooks’ recipes: “I think it depends on the cuisine; if I wanted to cook Chinese I would go to Ken Hom, if I was thinking of fish I’d look to Rick Stein and Madhur Jaffrey for middle eastern. I always look about for inspiration.” Mary is very proud of The Great British Bake Off; but not because of her own involvement, but for the hard work and incredible talent that she describes as getting better and better each series. She finished filming just a few weeks ago and explains how it gets trickier for the bakers each time. “The competition becomes stiffer each time,” she says with admiration. And it sounds as if there will JULY 2013

real life

Mary Berry’s TOP TIPS for baking: 1. Choose a recipe you really want to make and your family will enjoy. 2. Weigh all the ingredients very, very carefully because in baking you need to be accurate. Digital scales will help you. 3. When it comes to baking, all ovens vary; make a note on the recipe how long you cooked your cake for, and at what temperature, so you get it right the next time. 4. Use the right size tin for the recipe, which a lot of people don’t and then they find it’s too thin or thick. 5. The choice of fat is important; use a fat that is specially formulated for cakes.

be more to come as Mary promises there are still many more recipes she’d like to do. It is clear Mary Berry loves to cook for herself as well as for others. I asked her who cooks when she goes on holiday, something many of us would simply choose not to do. “We all go on holiday as a family once a year and we take it in turns,” she explains. “It’s not a chore that way and we all enjoy it.” She also recommends taking a ready-prepared

JULY 2013

dish with you so there is at least one meal taken care of! Mary Berry applies the same practical organisation when hosting a supper party at home. “I’m a great one for preparing ahead,” she says. “You never know what’s going to happen before people arrive, and so I usually do a onepot dish if it’s a kitchen supper, and I try to get most of it done ahead so I can enjoy being with my pals!” Whether the hostess or guest, Mary

loves the sharing and the friendship food and eating provides. “It’s the company and the getting together that’s important; the food is an added bonus!” So with all of this in mind, I will now go and book my tickets for Mary Berry’s demonstration at The Gloucester Quays Food Festival on Friday 19th July, and I’ll take the children too! food and drink

Off the It’s that time of year again when great food meets superb drink in a headlong gastronomic emulsion that has everybody salivating. The 2013 Gloucester Quays Food Festival is upon us. Between 19th and the 21st of July it’ll be time to throw away the scales, the diet and get stuck into three days of full-on food and drink. The ‘Quays’ Food Festival is quite unique in that entry is free. Where else can you sample everything from local beef and sausages right through to locally produced cider, beer, cheese and bread?

‘‘

“I think this food festival is just brilliant because it allows we chefs to really showcase local, seasonal produce. And at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about”

dock…

And it’s right on our doorstep. Last year over 100,000 visitors bundled onto the re -developed Gloucester docks. This year looks to be no different. Over eighty speciality producers will be offering a veritable cornucopia of food and drink aimed at show casing not only quality, but the range of produce this country has to offer. No major food event these days would come without a sprinkling of TV Chefs and this year is no exception. James Martin and Gino D’Acampo will be making their third appearances at the show. They’ll be joined by the evergreen Mary Berry as she graces the event for the very first time. The Gloucester Quays Food Festival always has a local flavour and aroma attached to it and local heroes Phil Vickery MBE and Rob Rees MBE will be strutting their stuff in the live cookery theatre. Phil Vickery commented “ it’s amazing to see what they’ve done with Gloucester Quays and this event is right up there with the best of them. It’s a great way of tasting and buying quality produce”. Rob Rees then

Eric Barton sinks his teeth in the 2013 Gloucester Quays Food Festival

said, “I think this food festival is just brilliant because it allows we chefs to really showcase local, seasonal produce. And at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about”. The event also quite rightly latches onto the fact that there are a host of talented chefs working in some phenomenal restaurants and hotels right here in Gloucestershire. This festival also allows them to sharpen their knives and show off their skills. It’s a fantastic way for us (the punters) of obtaining a small glimpse of the levels of quality and culinary innovation that abounds locally. The Gloucester Quays Food Festival is more than just about food. To me it’s about community and family. The positioning of the event right in the beating heart of Gloucester (in the redeveloped discount shopping Mecca of the Gloucester Quays) is a smart move by the organisers. Where else can you munch on an old spot sausage, take in a glass of fizz, listen to a live band and buy a duvet? And not a slimy, charred ‘value hamburger’ in sight. The Peel Group who developed the Gloucester Quays have put enormous resource and effort into creating an event which is now firmly established on the ‘foodie’ calendar.. Alison Tennant, Marketing Director, The Peel Group said, “ it’s an event that’s growing year on year and the visitor feedback we get is just fantastic”. This event is off the dock and off the hook in terms of quality, quantity and entertainment. It’s a cracking day out for all the family and one not to be missed. Summer is here The sun stretches lazily in the azure blue sky as a gentle breeze whips up the occasional dust devil. Pigeons call idly and swifts fly past, screaming to any that will listen. It has happened. If only for a short while, almost in the peripheral vision of our minds, Summer is here. Then let us engage full heartily with all good grace (as Chaucer may have said), for the subtlety of benign weather is that we have a tendency to forget it. Make sure that you do not, for this is the payment of a winter of suffering. Run, oh run, as fast as you can, hand in hand with all that high summer may bring. Dance, imbibe, celebrate and be happy. We have only now. The past may remind us and the future enthrall, but now is all we have as a surety. Sumer is icumen in, Lhude sing Cuccu! (As Chaucer definitely did say). The busy season is upon us at the Castle: weddings at the weekends, coachloads of happy visitors during the week and a constant stream of day visitors. As I write we are looking forward to the arrival of the works that comprise this year’s display of art in the gardens. It is going to be a significant installation of pieces by the renowned American sculptor Alexander Calder, and the first ever display of his works outdoors in England. The exhibition is being undertaken by the Pace Gallery, in collaboration with The Calder Foundation (www.calder.org). I would recommend a visit to see these worldclass works and the juxta-position that they will enjoy within our garden setting. The summer display of planting is now complete. The long hours of preparation in the greenhouse and polytunnels have paid off, and our young horticultural charges are finally living the high life of summer sun and full growth. The display should reach its apogee in the dog days of August. The Romans first referred to the sultry days of August as dies caniculares in association with the Dog Star, Sirius: the brightest star in the night sky, and the largest in the constellation Canis Major. At times the summer may seem fleet, but we JULY 2013

“The busy season is upon us at the Castle: weddings at the weekends, coachloads of happy visitors during the week and a constant stream of day visitors.” should not hasten autumn. Make time to appreciate the abundance of growth and life that the season brings. Just for once, allow yourself to be Aesop’s grasshopper, fiddling happily whilst the ants make ready for winter. There is nothing wrong with a little music and joviality. Noticeably this year, we have a paucity of ducklings at Sudeley: none at all, in fact. This time last year we were awash with the little things. However, we do appear to have quite a number of nesting songbirds and at least one robin’s nest, which has appeared in the gardeners’ greenhouse. I will remind you to be aware of nesting birds when you are gardening and to avoid trimming your hedges until at least August. If you really cannot leave the growth alone, then check thoroughly first for any signs

of nesting. Remember, disturbing nesting birds is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and can lead to a hefty fine or six months’ imprisonment. For now, sit back; enjoy your garden, the weather and the company of those you care about. CS Sudeley Castle and Gardens is open for the 2013 season until the 3rd November. Check the website www.sudeleycastle.co.uk for full details of events including Tudor Family Fun Days, literary and historical talks and tours, or call 01242 602308. gardening “Lavender’s blue (dilly dilly), lavender’s green” so goes the well known 17th century rhyme and I can think of few other such recognisable and celebrated plants in this county today. In fact we need look no further than the naming of one of the most popular cultivars: Lavendula angustifolia Hidcote, to claim Gloucestershire’s stake on this plant of nasal perfection. This cultivar was of course named after the National Trust’s gardens at Hidcote near Chipping Campden and gifts us the most spectacular floral spikes of deep purple/blue and an outstanding scent for which lavender is known world wide. A Gloucestershire man who is to lavender as wine is to cheese, Andrew Bullock, resides high up in the Cotswolds. A visit a few years ago offered a collector’s paradise of lavenders being cared for in what would be the most highly prized of pre-school establishments. The Lavender Garden Nursery has also been seen on Cheltenham’s Promenade sharing its potently scented wares with the boulevarding masses. For a royal connection, plump for ‘Imperial Gem’ seen at Highgrove or for some Art Deco decadence, select ‘Miss Muffet’ which Clarice Cliff chose to tend while on a tea break from painting delicate crocus onto her sought after china. I am lucky enough to have been given a cutting from one of Clarice’s plants, which, as a Clarice Cliff collector (thanks to my grandmother and greatgrandmother’s penchant for all things floral), is very dear to me! A member of the mint family, this plant has its roots firmly imbedded in the Latin tongue, believed to have derived its name from the word lavare – to wash. Today we spend millions of pounds on lavender potions and creams following in the footsteps of the Romans who used the plant to add pleasing aromas to their bathwater. When the tomb of Tutankhamun was opened in the 1920s, fragments of lavender were found: amazingly, a slight aroma was still evident despite the tomb being sealed thousands of years ago! Follow your nose in Gloucestershire and the scented village of Snowshill can lay claim to over 30 acres of lavender fields, over 30 different varieties and 250,000 plants in total! Cheltenham horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has a wealth of green fingered knowledge and is currently working as an Assistant Producer on a brand new gardening programme for the BBC. Here she looks at a fragrant favourite that needs no introduction…

Lavender, responsible for this sea of blue, have tended the crop since it was planted at the turn of this century, distilling on site and creating a plethora of exquisitely scented products. A favourite of mine, although a little tender in these cold winters of ours, is Lavendula stoechas, otherwise known as French lavender. The little bunny rabbit type ears launch themselves from the top of the blossom spikes as if an attempt to stand tall on their hind legs and gain the attention of passers-by. (When I refer to bunny ears, I am imagining upright ears and not lop like my rabbit Bassett-Smith family)! At the Centenary RHS Chelsea Flower Show last month, I spent many glorious hours on press day wandering around and taking note of all the greatness that horticulture has to offer. Inside the floral marquee, one stand that always attracts

my attention is the Downderry Nursery lavender display. A mounded carpet of blue, purple, pink, magenta and white, a real showcase of lavender at its best and a worthy gold medal winner this year. Lavender essential oil is antibacterial and so is also useful in the medicine cabinet. Use as an antiseptic for cuts and small burns. It is also very handy as a stress reliever or sleep aid. Very useful as the holiday season arrives and we spend many hours at packed airports or trying to rest on flights that seem to last longer than your actual holiday! I could dedicate many pages to this fabulous plant, easily rivalling the 30 plus verses of “Lavender’s Blue” as mentioned at the start of this article, however I will leave you now in favour of a lavender shortbread biscuit (local Duchy – thank you Prince Charles) and a cup of tea (lavender of course)! Lord Ellenborough comes home to Southam

In July 2012 Henrietta Abel Smith, from Bisley in Gloucestershire, was commissioned to paint an oil on canvas reproduction of the original. Henrietta spent six months researching and painting, which included many hours studying the original at the National Gallery. Following its unveiling at a reception on the 30th May, the painting now hangs in the Great Hall of Ellenborough Park, a room where Lord Ellenborough would have spent many hours. It’s Festival time! On 14th July, the streets of Painswick will be bursting with activity – street entertainers, live music, artists, craft stalls and yummy local food and produce. And this year the visitors will be vying with each other for the prize for the most innovatively dressed festival-goer! In conjunction with Create Gloucestershire’s Art: Not What I Expected project, there will be a special prize for the visitor who has entered into the spirit of the day with the most aplomb. The body artists will once again be wowing visitors as they paint their models’ bodies for six hours in the Painswick Centre – always a popular spectator sport. And this year, all the Art Couture contestants will be walking around the village streets throughout the day displaying their costumes, so you can get photos, chat to the designers about their inspiration and wonder at the skill and hard work that has gone into these unique and truly amazing works of art. You can also vote for the ‘People’s Prize’ by visiting the Information Tent where you can engage further with the designers and information about their work. At 3:30 it’s all eyes up to watch the special flypast of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight: a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Lancaster - for those who can tear themselves away from the display of Morgan cars on the ground.

A panel of illustrious judges has been assembled to perform the impossible task of awarding prizes to the best entrants in the Art Couture Painswick competition. This year’s themes are: Metamorphosis, World Where You Live and Well Suited, with an additional headwear section with the theme of Head Gear. Competitors are arriving from all over the UK, from Orkney to Devon, and range in age from 5 to 95. After last year’s successful debut, the Sunday Festival will be preceded by Live@ACP: a concert by local musicians held on the main churchyard stage from 4:30 to 9:00. It will kick off in style with a parade of children from the Croft School who have been making wonderful things in a series of workshops to display before they start off the musical evening with their own contribution. Live@ACP is sponsored this year by Murrays, who will be adding some spice by presenting it too. A beautiful book has just been published that tells the story of Art Couture Painswick… so far! Lavishly presented, it is available through local retailers, as well as on the Art Couture

website and through booksellers including Amazon. The organisers are expecting many thousands of visitors this year, whose comfort and pleasure is at the forefront of their planning. Parking is available for £5 per vehicle at three large car-parks, and this fee includes one wristband and one programme. Extra programmes and entry wristbands will be available at £2.50 each at the Festival, or both items can be purchased in advance for £2.00 each from local retailers, or from the Stroud Tourist Information Centre. The programme and wristband are very collectable, and the bands have lasting value since, being sponsored by the Falcon and Royal Oak in Painswick, they are redeemable through the year for many discounted privileges. So don’t miss this unique event – there is truly something for everyone. CS Website: www.acpfestival.co.uk Facebook: facebook.com/ acpainswick Twitter: @acpainswick and #unexpectedart

Get your skin holiday-ready

If you want to achieve luminous, radiant skin in time for the holiday season, treat yourself to an Oxygen Infusion Facial with A-List Aesthetics, and be amazed by the instant visible results it can achieve for you.

Ready Steady Glow

This summer season we are doing away with heavy make up coverage and colours that mask your natural skin tone; instead we are daring to go bare face and with healthy glowing skin, which is now possible thanks to the celebrities favourite Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusions! “Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusions are among the best treatments on the market for deep hydration and achieving the ultimate glow – and as they are suitable for all skin types and ages, they are the most popular treatments in my clinic”, says Dr Zulia Frost. “We typically treat the face and neck and can add an atoxelene serum specifically formulated for around the delicate eye area to dramatically soften fine lines and reduce wrinkle depth by up to 63% after just one treatment. Intraceuticals Opulence treatments for the décolletage area are also very much in demand during the summer months.”

The Oxygen Infusions are fantastic at rehydrating tired, dull skin through the use of low molecular weight hyaluronan delivered into the skin using pressurized oxygen. The recent addition of booster serums (choose from Vitamin C, Collagen, Antioxidants and Vitamin A) means the effects can be enhanced further and treatments can be tailored to the needs of each individual. The treatment itself is very relaxing and soothing and leaves the skin feeling slightly cool to the touch, plumped up, fresh and dewy looking. Results are Intraceuticals instantaneous and also Vitamin C cumulative, and your skin will booster – your ultimate look better and better Dr summer skin Zulia Frost explains: to help brightener, £49 hold the moisture and prolong the results in the skin, a 3 step layering system for home use is recommended. Whilst one treatment is a good preparation for your summer holiday or special occasion, a course of treatments sees your skin dramatically transformed, plumped up and with a gorgeous finish to take you through the summer season!

business

‘‘

Raising the bar We talk to Sam Rossiter, Director of Imperial Hearing… Q When did you set up Imperial Hearing? A We’ve been established for seven years now. Simon, my fellow Director, and I took it on when it was Cheltenham and Tewkesbury Hearing. We quickly realised that we wanted the company to be a little bigger than it was so we changed the name to Imperial Hearing because otherwise we were restricted geographically. We expanded and we now have a centre over in Stow on the Wold, one down in Bristol, one in Chipping Sodbury and in Newport, as well as here in Cheltenham and over in Tewkesbury. Q What sets your business apart? A We’ve been really lucky but we have also worked really hard to create and maintain a brand. There is a lot of competition in the market but we tend to gain the clients who want the job to be done properly rather than just being sold to. The market is quite a complicated one for consumers as there are so many different advertising messages that it make it almost impossible to know if an offering that is coming from a large national for £1000 is going to be the same that we will offer for a little more so it is all about trying to educate the patient. What we are about isn’t a product but the customer service, the after care, the professionalism and the whole package.

Q You have a great reputation, do you have plans to expand again? A Most of our business comes from recommendations, referrals and repeat business. Which is exactly how we want it to be! We do some internal referral work from GPs and consultants. But we have got to a nice size now where we can look after people without them having to wait for too long. It’s an organic process but as a company we are at a great stage, the right size and patients are being looked after in the right way. We are very conscious that it’s all about the patient really. JULY 2013

What we are about isn’t a product but the customer service, the after care, the professionalism and the whole package.

www.ahip.org.uk is a great resource but we want to make it even easier for patients to navigate their way to a professional.

Q What is next for you on a personal level? A I have very recently been appointed as Chair of AHIP or Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Practitioners. It’s an organsiation that has been running alongside the independent sector and is a group that wanted to offer a guaranteed level of service to the patients. It’s got bigger and better and we have been involved with it since the start of Imperial really and I was involved with the running of it for six years. Two years ago I became the Vice Chairman and took on the role of Chair last weekend. The association has changed and developed and it is a brilliant association but we need to tell the people about it a bit more. We want the patients to know what they should be receiving from their hearing healthcare. We are the most local centre involved with this. The network has changed a lot and we want to continue raisng the bar for the independent market so that people understand what they should be getting from their provider. Our website

Q Do you find that there is reluctance from people wanting to come and have their hearing tested? A I don’t think that anybody wants to come in and have a hearing aid fitted! It’s not a luxury item and vanity does indeed play a part. But there have been massive advancements in technology and equipment now is so much more discreet. The manufacturers understand that they need to break down barriers and the market has changed massively. Consumers are so much more educated now with the marketers feeding them but fundamentally the patient must be assessed in the right way. Lots of companies place the onus on the sale but we remain true to our patients. The NHS is a huge player within the audiology market and we are a big supporter but there are patients that need some private or specialist support and that’s what we are here for. CS

extra mile Going the

Q. What have you been up to since we last caught up with you? A. Quite a bit. We’ve expanded the product range which now includes Hosted Voice over IP (VoIP), to add to our traditional Telephone System products. We have also launched our new Data Networking and Cloud Computing offerings and also Web design in collaboration with our partner Twice Creative. We also have a Managed Energy proposition which we are cross-selling to our established Telecoms customers. The business has just celebrated its sixth birthday and we’ve launched our new website. So it’s been a very busy time. Q. Can we meet the team? A. There are four of us working fulltime. Paul Dixon is the Operations Director, Richard Price is Programme Manager, and Mel Green splits her time between supporting the Telecoms and Energy parts of the business. I have responsibility for Business Development and Sales. Clive Thomas is our part-time Finance Director and Ian Rogers the Installations Manager. We’ve been working together in various businesses, off and on, for the best part of 20 years. Q. How does being based here in Eagle Tower help your business? A. There is a real buzz in and around Eagle Tower. The many friends that we have made here over the years have helped us to increase the size of our customer base by introducing us to their business contacts. In addition, we have a number of valued customers in the Eagle Tower building. It’s a well known Cheltenham landmark and a great base for supporting our local customers. Q. What sets you apart from the competition? A. Two things… JULY 2013

Craig Derrick Photography

We catch up with Keith Dunne, Director of Outsource Voice Ltd...

Firstly, it’s all too easy to say, but we really do go the extra mile to ensure our customers’ needs are looked after. Most Telecoms suppliers (especially the traditional, large, call-centre based operators) just cannot provide the levels of personal care that local operators such as OutsourceVoice deliver. If a customer has a problem that we cannot diagnose immediately via our state-ofthe-art monitoring tools, then we will have no hesitation in getting someone on site (usually same day) to diagnose and action. It’s all part of our service. Secondly, we are all industry experts with many, many years of experience and this allows us to evaluate a customer’s needs and propose solutions that are right for them. We are an independent provider of telephone systems and, as such, we are not constrained in the choices that we recommend. You can be sure that, at OutsourceVoice, we will exercise our independence and recommend only those systems that fully meet a customer’s unique, individual requirements. We really do feel that the customer’s

interests are best served by using a reputable, experienced local supplier.

Q. What’s next for the business? A. Our new Hosted VoIP and Wide Area Wi-Fi products are being marketed under the MontpellierNet brand. This is an exciting, innovative and fast moving part of our business. MontpellierNet customers enjoy free customer to customer calls, generating worthwhile savings. We are also running regular seminars for Telecoms buyers. We have already delivered our first seminar at Eagle Tower ‘buying Telecoms for business’ and this is generating some really good feedback. Our next seminar is planned for the end of July 2013. CS

business

Don’t go it alone! With smaller companies now facing the reality of auto-enrolment, Brunsdon CEO Brian Morman says that help is at hand to ease the considerable administration burden Every employer in the land should now be familiar with the new workplace pension legislation and auto-enrolment. It’s the Government’s initiative to ‘nudge’ workers to begin a pension plan to help fund what is likely to be a long retirement and avoid the so-called ‘pensions time bomb’ of people living longer without the financial means to support themselves. If you are an employer, the emphasis is firmly on you to set up a qualifying pension scheme and encourage staff to join it. Failure to introduce a compliant scheme by the staging date – the date allocated to each firm by which autoenrolment has to be implemented – will be a criminal offence attracting a fixed penalty of up to £50,000, or fines of up to £500 a day! The majority of employers, including those with fewer than 500 staff, should now have been given their staging date. For many firms that will have been a massive reality check, especially if they have as yet made no preparations. It doesn’t matter if you have just a few employees or hundreds. The preparation needed is the same. To avoid penalties, as an employer you’ll need to set aside time to prepare a plan and put it into motion to identify which staff – by law – must be enrolled into a scheme. Even this is not straightforward. Well, you didn’t really think it would be, did you? For example, are Partners of the firm employees or are they self-employed? How about independent contractors? And what about British people working abroad, or support staff ? Other considerations to be taken into account include making sure the right communications are sent to relevant employees on time, understanding which employees have opted out of the scheme (because they can if they wish), and how to make contribution payments. JULY 2013

If you are an employer, the emphasis is firmly on you to set up a qualifying pension scheme and encourage staff to join it Businesses will need to make sure systems are in place for efficient record maintenance and data exchange. It’s essential to get it right, because the Government will check and there will be sanctions for non-compliance. Make no mistake, for most firms this will not be a walk in the park. Even legal firms are struggling to get to grips with auto-enrolment. According to www.lawgazette.co.uk (3 June 2013), one third of law firms are unsure how to handle the tricky issues of autoenrolment compliance and administration. All companies will have to prepare by budgeting for the additional costs of making employer contributions, dealing with staff queries, upgrading payroll systems, collecting and paying over contributions and keeping the required records. Needless to say, these costs will be on-going. So at a time when firms are being asked to do more for less, and when they are already facing rising costs and increased administration and legislation, the hassle surrounding autoenrolment and constantly having to

provide real-time information could be just too much to handle – without help! As I see it, the perfect answer could be to outsource the administration. At Brunsdon, we fully understand the issues and are geared up to step in and ease the auto-enrolment administrative burden for employers. And of course, if no qualifying pension scheme is in place, we can advise on that also. I know that very, very few financial advisers will be in a position to offer this service, so as more and more smaller businesses approach their staging dates and seek advice in a panic, be prepared for a log jam. There may not be enough qualified advice to go around! My advice now is that if you, as an employer, are unsure of your legal duties under the auto-enrolment legislation, or are worried that you will be unable to meet your staging date deadline, contact me straight away. At Brunsdon, our experts are here to help you with all the support you need and provide the peace of mind that your firm will be fully compliant by your staging date. “Sometimes you shouldn’t over-think things”

‘‘

This month we meet Lisa Gettins, Partner and Head of Employment at BPE Solicitors LLP in Cheltenham Lisa joined BPE in 2009 and heads the Employment Team. She has specialised in employment law since qualification in 1997 and has previously worked inhouse in manufacturing, and for an international law firm. She has advised clients ranging from owner managed businesses to international financial institutions; small charities to NHS Trusts and local government. “I moved to work in Cheltenham four years ago, but was actually living in Cheltenham for 18 months before that. Having worked in London and Birmingham, Cheltenham was a completely different marketplace. It’s a very well networked business community and a far nicer business community”, Lisa explains. “But it was a bit of a shock to go to events and suddenly realise that I didn’t know anyone! During my first year I think I went to the opening of every envelope. You really do just have to get out there and do it. I relied on close contacts to introduce me to others back then.” “I am a little more ruthless now with my time and go to the events that are of the most use but when you start you have to throw yourself into it. There is no easy way of doing it. It helps if you enjoy it too and I was very much supported within the firm.” Lisa worked in-house in manufacturing for five years, before moving to international law firm DLA Piper for five years. She then moved to Bevan Brittan, specialising in advice to the public

Manufacturing was a hugely maledominated environment and I was in my early-twenties and had to work hard in those days to earn respect. I loved it and thoroughly enjoyed the job and it’s a sector I love working in now. “I spent five years there and then moved on to work for a firm called DLA and moved into their employment law team. I intended to do a couple of years there but I had a fantastic time and stayed there for five years. I got exposure to such a high level of work with such incredible clients.” “I moved here effectively to become number two in the department and then

a week before I started I received a telephone call to ask me if I would like to head up the department. I knew that this was the right firm for me. It was gut instinct. “ “I head up a team of 10 here and they are fantastic people. I’m certainly not a softie and will challenge my team but I like to think that I am more of a trusted advisor really. I think it is about respect between both parties and my role is largely about developing people, too. The feedback I am getting at the moment is that the employment team is the model of how it should be done.” “Cheltenham is very closely connected but in a good way, it is far more sociable then other areas. Here, you get to know all areas of the business community. There is a grow Gloucestershire philosophy and there is a real coming together of people that you just don’t get in the cities.” “I set myself a resolution of doing less at the beginning of this year. I take on too much and so I made the decision to try and pull back and do less. It is hard but that’s been a real challenge and it is something that I came to recognise that I was trying to do too much. I try to be outside, doing lots of mountain biking and things that keep me fit and being with family and friends. We love to go to Cranham and the Forest of Dean.” We ask Lisa what her advice would be: “It is really important to just go for it, sometimes you shouldn’t over-think things too much. And don’t lose sight of the fact that you should also have a bit of fun!” CS

A vision to grow Gloucestershire Having lived in Gloucestershire for over 30 years, it is like a passion that never fades. For me, it is a beautiful county with diverse areas of enterprise, rural idylls and vibrant urban dynamism... So it’s no surprise that when the opportunity came my way to set up GFirst LEP, just over two years ago, I jumped at the chance. As one of 39 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) in England, GFirst LEP was launched to steer the growth of Gloucestershire’s economy with business at its epicentre and working closely with the public sector. Birthdays come round quickly and in June, we were delighted to celebrate the second anniversary of GFirst LEP to share with the business community and public sector, the impressive achievements over the last year and unveil future plans. At the Parabola Arts Centre, as part of the Science Festival in Cheltenham, we were able to say a big thank you to the hundreds of people who were able to join us on the day, and to those who were unable to attend across the county who are helping us to make real change happen for businesses and the community. For me personally, the Parabola Arts Centre holds a special meaning – when I was Chief Operating Officer at SuperGroup, we regularly held our AGMs there. Last month, however, it was very different and very exciting, an opportunity to look to the future while also showcasing and celebrating some of the significant successes we have seen in the past two years. The results of GFirst LEP’s work to galvanise the business community and public sector into working together for the benefit of the county are impressive. Our Banking Sector Group is recognised by the Government and the Bank of England Governor as a model of best practice for helping small businesses access financial support. I’m also delighted that JULY 2013

With Diane Savory, Chair of GFirst LEP, Gloucestershire’s Local Enterprise Partnership Gloucestershire is leading the agenda on boosting UK high streets, following the Mary Portas review. Thanks to the expertise and dedication within the county for creating busy and profitable town centres, GFirst LEP has been appointed retail Pathfinder by Government and asked to help lift high streets across the UK. Cirencester will be one of the first towns to benefit by using the toolkit we developed specifically to help towns in the county and nationally to identify how they could make positive changes to create vibrant and flourishing high streets once more. The achievements we have celebrated so far, and plans to meet the challenges ahead, wouldn’t be made possible without the valuable work that our Ambassadors do. From all walks of life, we have recruited over 300 local business people to become GL Ambassadors, to share their expertise and inspire others. Sharing their zeal for growing Gloucestershire and opening new doors for firms across the county, their work has been a huge success in inspiring and moulding the business leaders of today and tomorrow. At our birthday celebration, we were able to award six Ambassadors in recognition for their outstanding contribution in making a difference. The decision was difficult as we have so many Ambassadors that carry out vital work helping other businesses or inspiring young people, in addition to their busy careers and businesses. We are however, always keen to welcome new Ambassadors on board, and so I would say that if you think you could help others with an area of expertise, then please sign up at www.gl-am.co.uk.

Our second anniversary event was also an opportunity to share my personal vision and that of the GFirst LEP to grow Gloucestershire. In the next 12 months, we will be charged with creating a plan for growth that will secure tens of millions of pounds for Gloucestershire. It’s an exhilarating time to aim for the vision that by 2022, the county will have even more world-class companies, a diverse portfolio and a reputation for starting and growing great businesses. In other words, I and GFirst LEP want Gloucestershire to become an even more vibrant and successful county to live, work and invest in. So what about the future? I’ve no doubt at all that the path ahead will be just as busy and successful. The real challenge for us now, the whole business community and the public sector is to get a plan together that we can convince the Government to invest in Gloucestershire. What I would say, is that you have to start first with a vision and the ambition to make it work. So long as we can all share that same vision and ambition, we can and will make it work. Business in Gloucestershire is already going from strength to strength, and the responsibilities and powers of Local Enterprise Partnerships are growing. If you’re not already connecting with us, you could be missing out. So get involved to help your business prosper while playing your part in making Gloucestershire great. restaurant review

L’Anatra Bourton-on-the-Water Reviewed by Shelle Duffin A visit to the Cotswolds is not complete without a trip to one of its most famous villages, Bourton-on-the-Water. The Chester House Hotel, located opposite the river, is one of the village’s famous landmarks and has recently bought some eccentricity to the culinary scene by opening an in-house Italian restaurant. As we walked through the door, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, Donna Holland, and shown to our table in the restaurant, positioned in the window with a view of the River Windrush. The river flows through the middle of the village, earning it the nickname ‘The Venice of the Cotswolds’ – and we definitely had the best seats in the house. Having studied the wine list, we settled on a refreshing glass of Fathoms Sauvignon Blanc, which embodied flavours of elderflower and gooseberry, and at an honest price of £16.95 a bottle was a delight for a bargain. L’Anatra has accomplished an intimate ambience that runs throughout the restaurant. Lit by a mixture of candlelight and fairy lights, it has all the

traditional features of Cotswold country chic in place and bestows a real feeling of home comfort. Multi-coloured pasta arrangements in vases are just a few of the subtle touches that have been added to the décor to remind us that this is in fact an Italian rather than a country pub, adding a real sense of authenticity thanks to the use of one of the country’s prime ingredients. The menu is simple Italian food that we all know and love. It begins with a list of the daily specials including the soup and risotto of the day, as well as a meat or fish dish. Starters include a traditional antipasti platter, a range of bruschettas, and their most popular dish, Pollo (chicken) Pesto Salad, made with their own homemade pesto. Having tried this, I can see why it’s become a best seller. The pesto is like no other found anywhere but Italy. I’ve even suggested they jar it up and sell it; it’s a true, and not to mention delicious representation that Italians would be proud of. Main courses range from Seabass alla Ligure and Chicken Principessa to the much loved Spaghetti Carbonara and linguini with mussels, crayfish and prawns, and are priced from £7.95 to £14.50. However, the real crowd pleasers are the handmade pizzas, which are available to eat-in or takeaway. Since L’Anatra has opened its doors, these have become the talk of the county with locals flocking from the surrounding villages. As we sat comfortably, indulging in our own pizzas, numerous people came to order theirs – and judging by the Donna’s knack of remembering past orders, this clearly wasn’t their first time at L’Anatra. Priced from £8.00 for a classic Margherita to £11.00 for a Formaggi (known to some as ‘cheese

heaven’) and made to order using only the freshest of ingredients, I’d say these are definitely ‘an eye for a bargain’. And if you can’t finish it at their table, they will happily box it up so you can take it home. To finish, no Italian feast can go amiss without a helping of Tiramisu and at L’Anatra, this is another dish chef Michele Samoila does to perfection. Priced at £6.00, the portion size is more than generous and for those with a sweet tooth, it’s a must try! Ingredients used in the kitchens at L’Anatra are seasonal and sourced locally, something that is consistent throughout the menu. During a conversation with Donna, she explained to me that it was important to them when sourcing their ingredients to support local producers, celebrating the delicious produce that this part of the country has to offer. To me, as I’m sure many of you will agree, listening to a restaurant owner and her chef talk so passionately about supporting the local community of food producers whilst we relish in the delicious dishes their goods have created is something rather special. Overall this is what L’Anatra is as a whole – special. From the setting in which it sits, the ambiance it has created, to the food which it produces, whether enjoyed in their surroundings or back home, I guarantee that the overall experience is one you will return for. restaurant review

No trouble at The Trouble House Lucinda Farrelle discovers the delights at Tetbury’s The Trouble House… Nestled between Cirencester and Tetbury on an isolated stretch of the A433, I discovered an intriguing public house with a history and name suited to a Daphne Du Maurier novel. The Trouble House, (don’t you want to go there already and does it not set your heart racing?) is a 17th century pub, the first recorded landlord being John Reeve in 1775. The exterior is appropriately aged and wonderfully non-descript in accordance with the period, however step inside and be prepared for a surprise. The name proved to be most apt as two suicides have been associated with the Inn, the Luddite Rebellion and in 1830; the Swing Riots took place in Tetbury, where men rioted, and setting fire to local farms in a protest against the increasing mechanisation of agriculture. One night, aggrieved agricultural workers gathered at the Trouble House to divide the results of their looting, and drink to their own success. Some, according to the local newspapers, weren’t bona fide workers, but troublemakers who attached themselves to those with genuine grievances in order to cause havoc and profit from robbing and looting….hence the name. The mayhem and history has settled well into the walls and the hostelry now provides an atmospheric, friendly and enjoyable pastime, within thankfully, a peaceable and welcoming setting. The Chef and co –landlord, Liam Parr, grew up in Gloucestershire, and trained with Gary Rhodes at his London restaurant City Rhodes (1*) then Harveys Bristol (1*) and worked at various places around the world including: New York, Spain and

Switzerland. Recently Liam has worked at Calcot Manor before moving on to Trouble House. On arrival we are greeted by a convivial barmaid who shows my guest and I to our table in the restaurant. The restaurant mirrors all the charm of what you’d expect to see in rustic country pub; exposed wooden beams, olive green wooden paneling on the walls, an open fire place. The room is perfectly lit with ambient lighting and unambiguous wall lamps and the whole effect is understated, unpretentious and intimate.

The menu offers an exciting combination of innovative yet familiar locally sourced British produce to suit the most discerning pallet. To start, we had a delicate appetizer of fresh baby local asparagus, drizzled in a warm hollandaise sauce. My choice was marinated beef carpaccio, which was beautifully presented as cornucopia of summer on a plate, with the bright pink finely sliced tender beef and the greens, oranges, reds of the garden fresh salad... - the roast pepper dressing and parmesan garnished the salad just perfectly and complemented the dish,

allowing you to taste the earthy flavours of the crisp salad. A perfect starter. My guest ordered the celeriac and apple soup with double Gloucester fritters; the soup was creamy and delicious; the subtle apple tones against the celeriac was just right- the double Gloucester fritters provided a lovely soft alternative to croutons. A variety of supurb warm home baked bread rolls accompanied our starter. For my main course I had Braised Local Lamb and Merguez with spiced Aubergine and couscous. The lamb was cooked to perfection. The Merguez is a spiced lamb sausage, popular in North African and Middle Eastern cuisine. It is flavoured with fennel, garlic, cumin and chili pepper, which heightens the intensity of the flavorsome lamb. The spiced aubergine and couscous was a fantastic companion to the meat- a real taste of Morocco. My guest, being a vegetarian was keen to order something different and so Shane, the co-landlord, kindly suggested Spiced Aubergine Parcel, accompanied with couscous. To finish, we had mini selection of all of the desserts on offer and wow! Each dessert was freshly made in the kitchen… I’d recommend the Citrus Spiced Crème Brulee or the steamed apple and Raisin Sponge… to die for! All in all there is no trouble at The Trouble House; it is a fantastic country pub, with an impressive menu. The food is intelligent, creative and expertly prepared, as was the service we received from the staff, landlords, Liam and his wife Shane, who oversee every aspect of the service to ensure the dining experience is of the highest standard without being overly obtrusive. events

In Gloucestershire, we take great pride in our festivals, from Literature through to Science; now celebrating their third year, we decided to catch up with Lee Martin, organiser of local music and watersports festival, Lakefest, to find out more about this year’s line-up and why we should all be attending! Lakefest started out as a large cider festival back in 2011 and has grown into an amazing festival with lots of nominations for awards and a huge following; how did Lakefest come about? Our first cider festival was a decision made over breakfast between myself and my co-organisers (Steve Daff and Martin Newell) as a way of promoting a bar we had taken over at Croft Farm; we joked it was Gloucestershire's best kept secret. We had such amazing feedback from the cider festival that we decided to create a proper music festival. At first we were tempted to do another cider festival but we realised we could offer so much more; hence 'Lakefest' was born!

What has been your favourite memory from both the 2011 and 2012 festivals? Wow, there's been a lot. In terms of music it would be the set by The Roving Crows before the Wurzels took the stage; they forced 2000 people in a gigantic marquee to completely lose themselves for around five minutes. It made the hairs on my neck stand up and the euphoria was out of this world. Last year when Reef played "place your hands" and the entire crowd were singing it back was a special moment; I used to listen to that song lots back in the day with my school mates and it made it unforgettable. JULY 2013

What can we expect new for 2013? We're always learning and so 2013’s festival will be a lot bigger and better than previous years. We have more stages, more for children, great entertainment and better food; all with the same rustic vibe. Martin, myself and Daffy all have our own responsibilities to focus on to make sure Lakefest is the best it can be; no-one at Lakefest is just a number. Apart from arranging Lakefest, what else do you enjoy doing? Alongside running the Lakeside Café & Bar at Croft Farm, I indulge in loads of different things and proudly run a few businesses; Pig on The Hill, a local premium catering company, recently organised the bar and catering for Shane Warne and Liz Hurley’s charity cricket match!

Why should people come to Lakefest? Everyone is welcome at Lakefest! We want people to spend three days away from this ridiculously fast life we are immersed in and have amazing fun, be free, be respectful and let themselves go! What better way to celebrate the summer than to be amongst friends, family and great entertainment! CS

Can you fill in the missing lyric? In partnership with Cotswold Style, Lakefest is offering avid music fans the chance to win a family ticket with camping to enjoy this year’s festival. All you have to do is fill in the online form including the missing lyric and we’ll enter you into the prize draw to win this great prize. Once you have entered, you can also buy a family ticket to make sure you don’t miss out and if you win this great prize, we’ll refund the value of the tickets up to £190.

Good Life

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRAIG DERRICK

We have a beautiful Gloucester cow called Cindy who we’ve been using in our milking demonstrations. In order for her to produce milk, she needs to give birth to a calf, then she’s milked twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening. Cindy is led up onto a secure milking stand where she can munch away on some food to keep her still and occupied, while we explain to our visitors how modern day milking is ‘done’. Meanwhile, Cindy’s little calf, Indigo, sits waiting in the wings, keen for her mother’s delicious warm milk. Nothing goes to waste. As soon as the demo is finished, we pour out the five litres or so of Cindy’s milk into a very large bottle with a very large teet, emulating Cindy’s udders. Through hand rearing, you really can strike up a very moving and genuine bond with these beautiful creatures. I love holding the bottle for her – and Indigo will literally drawl and slurp up every single last drop of her feed. Gloucesters are my favourite cows. I love their dainty little horns, beautifully shiny black and white hides and sensitive nature. I was amazed to discover that there were only 30 left in the 1970s. Thankfully Adam’s father, Joe Henson, JULY 2013

“I’ve been looking forward to this all year… hand-rearing our milking calf Indigo” who founded the Cotswold Farm Park, was amongst some special individuals who decided to save the breed. There are now about 150 Gloucester Cattle and counting. Their milk is used for single and double Gloucester cheese. Last season we had another Gloucester milking cow called Dodd. I named her little bullock Dave and we really did strike up the most wonderful bond. He once dived over a

gate to get to me – it was very bucking bronco! He always got excited when I went to feed or muck him out and he used to dance around the stable with me, playing and nudging me. He even tried to flip me over, but he wasn’t strong enough thankfully. Dave is now running with the herd. I swear that he knew the day I had to say goodbye to him. As I knew that he would no longer be under my care, I tickled and scratched his head for twenty minutes or so, then walked away with tears in my eyes – and then he moo'd and moo'd until I went back to fuss him some more. As I went away again, he leapt up at the five bar gate and for a split second I thought he was literally going to clear it to get to me, but it was too high. It was very emotional and I really did adore him. I know he is happy enjoying life on the farm, so happy! And now it’s time for Cindy and Indigo to follow in Dave’s footsteps and go out onto the farm, so that’ll be another fond farewell. Time to invest in a new hankie. Our new milking demonstration animal is Chloe the goat, so I’m really looking forward to working more closely with a smaller type of milker! Why not come and see for yourself… CS The Cotswold Farm Park is open every day from 10.30am. Milking demonstrations continue until November. Including tips from Tony Soprano and what not to say in your wedding speech…

So it was a bit of a biggie for the Alpha Scot and me this year – our 20 year wedding anniversary. Cue sharp intakes of breath and raised eyebrows - roughly translated as how the hell did you two manage that? (Not sure whether to take that as an insult or a compliment). But it does take you up a notch in the matrimony stakes. We’re like Tony and Carmela in The Sopranos, or Tom and Nicole in Eyes Wide Shut (maybe not the best examples, look what happened to them). But then that’s the thing about relationships. It’s really hard to predict which ones are going to last the distance. Or is it? Some say it’s simply love, a mercurial unquantifiable measure, whilst others are more pragmatic and say it’s just common sense and all about avoiding conflict with your partner. But successful marriages are much more about the how – rather than the what. Like a good

cognac, it’s all about the blend. (Come to think of it, good cognac has played a surprisingly large role in my marriage…) It’s not so much that you fight, it’s how you do it, because everyone has their issues to deal with. The key is working out which are the ones that matter. See I have a theory (what a surprise): You need to respect your partner to make it last the distance. Don’t’ get me wrong, it doesn’t mean they can’t drive you mad sometimes, but if you don’t admire each other then forget it. Research suggests few things predict the future of a marriage more accurately than whether one partner rolls their eyes at the other – even done in jest, it’s a sign of contempt, and that my friends is the beginning of the end. And another thing: put in the graft. You’ve got to remember why you got married in the first place and focus on all the good things you’ve done together, rather than the bad. Go out, have dates, have fun, watch your wedding DVD (Although scratch that – ours is a source of conflict: the opening words of the Alpha Scot’s speech – “I’m constantly being told how lucky I am to be marrying Amanda – mainly by Amanda” wasn’t quite what I was expecting on the day). To quote Tolstoy: “What counts in a happy marriage is not how compatible you are – but how you deal with incompatibility”. Marriage is not always a bed of roses; but it sure is more fun if you roll around in the petals rather than the thorns. CS

SURTEES’ MARRIAGE GUIDANCE TIPS • Personal space. It’s no good giving him come to bed eyes if he’s just cut himself on your toenail clippings. You don’t have to share everything. • Have dates and get out of the house together (note: Going to shop at Waitrose does not count as a date). • Learn to compromise; not to change who you are, but be prepared to accept faults. Nobody is perfect (I say nobody – obviously I exclude myself from that maxim.) • Have a laugh. Remember all the good times you’ve had; reminiscing together is a very powerful drug.

“I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.”

I would love to hear from you! Please write to me, Amanda Toner (maiden name Surtees!) via editor@stylemagazines.co.uk

Initially started to fund a new children’s hospital for the county, the charity now helps sick children from across Gloucestershire in many different ways. Winston’s Wish, which is based in Cheltenham, is the leading childhood bereavement charity and the largest provider of services to bereaved children, young people and their families in the UK. The charity helps young people re-adjust to life after the death of a parent or sibling. Wessex Garages is a privately owned company that has outlets in Bristol, Cardiff, Gloucester and Newport. It specialises in new and used car sales across South Wales and the South West. Matthew added: “We have established a reputation for honesty, reliability and outstanding value for money and we pride ourselves on passing on massive savings on new and used cars direct to our customers, while still providing an aftersales service that is both friendly and professional.” CS For more information about Wessex Garages on Mercia Road, please call 0844 247 3181, visit www.wessexgarages.com, follow the company on Twitter at www.twitter.com/wessexgarages or log on to www.facebook.com/wessexgarages.

Michael immediately sparked with the Redbacks and produced such consistent performances that after two summers in Adelaide he was appointed captain. He has represented Australia A and was a member of the tour party to England in the summer of 2012. His other teams include Adelaide Strikers and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Michael is a quality performer in all three formats, averaging 37.25 in first class cricket, 41.17 in List A games and 28.35 in T20.

Q. We hear you’ve been injured, how are you? A. Yes, I have had a strain which I got on the last day of the four-day game against Lancashire but it’s not a big deal, I will be back on form in no time, I’m sure of it! Q. Who’s been the biggest influence on your career? A. That’s a tough one. Overall my father and brother as they were always encouraging me, they have been great people to lean on up until now. So yeah, I would say those two have been the biggest influence on me.

Q. What made you want to play cricket professionally? A. Back home as a kid I always played cricket in the summer and football in the winter. Probably at the age of 14/15, I decided to concentrate on one of the sports and I chose cricket. So I have been lucky enough to be able to play professionally from 18 and I’m 32 now, so 14 years - which has been great. Q. Aside from cricket, what is your favourite sport? A. Aussie Rules football. Not many people may have heard of it here in the UK, it’s a very big sport back in Australia, especially in the Southern states. It’s a bit more like rugby, I would say. Q. Who is the toughest opponent you’ve played? A. Andy Bichel from Queensland. He’s a fast bowler. He was super competitive and someone that I knew I was in a contest with, that’s for sure.

Q. What do you think of the Cotswolds? A. It’s a lovely part of the country. We had a sponsors night, which was held around the Montpellier area, so that is the main part of Cheltenham I’ve seen so far. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the area when my family arrive.

Q. Where does your nickname ‘Maxi’ come from? A. Do you know the show called ‘M.A.S.H’? Well, there is a character in there called Maxwell Klinger… so from that! I have been nicknamed that for quite a while now. Even some family members call me by it now, so it is pretty much my second name now. I don’t mind though.

Q. Do your children express an interest in cricket? A. They are still very young, I have a son who is turning three at the end of July and a daughter who has just turned one. Bailey, my son, tries to pick up a bat and throw a ball but he is really enjoying his football and going to the park and having a kick around. Q. Do you have any tips for budding batsmen? A. I think the most important thing for young kids, is to just enjoy it. I’ve seen kids take it too seriously which then affects them but if you enjoy it, it makes the game a lot easier. CS JULY 2013

Lowest points total to win the premier League next year? I believe so. With three managerial changes at three clubs in the top four from last season I believe that next season is going to be an unpredictable one... WORDS BY SHANE DUFF

JULY 2013

Sir Alex Ferguson (Man Utd), Rafa Benitez (Chelsea) and Roberto Mancini (Man City) have been replaced by David Moyes, Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini respectively. A change of manager brings around different routines and styles so there will be some changes to the recipe that made them successful previously. Following Sir Alex is a daunting task but Mr Moyes definitely inherits a fantastic squad. Mourinho’s arrival nearly a decade ago made an instant impact so expectations will be high. Man City’s situation is a little unknown to me. I am not sure how they will cope and bounce back after last season’s disappointments. To coincide with this, Arsenal seem to have paid off lots of stadium debt and now in a cash rich state and have some money to burn. It has been a few trophy less years for Arsenal fans so expectations for them will be higher also if they manage to get in some big name signings. Their North London rivals Tottenham are a club I like very much and have a soft spot for their manager Andre Villas Boas after the tough period he had at Chelsea. They seem very stable to me will want to progress again and finish into the top four of the league for Champions League qualification.

Therefore I believe that the Champions this coming season will do so with the fewest number of points compared to the champions in the past five to ten seasons. The teams will beat one another more frequently. I can’t wait to see it unfold. Before this we have a number of sporting events coming up with the Wimbledon Tennis and Cricket’s ‘Ashes’ Series against the old enemy. I love these events and would love be a live spectator at every day. Sadly I may have to settle for a sofa and television. If I manage the time to watch, that is. Away from sport I went away for a family get together last week for my mum’s 60th birthday (she won’t thank me for that). We went to a Golf Hotel and Spa in Ireland, where the majority of the family live and had an absolute ball. Talks of an annual event are now taking place. The old man is one of 10 kids and seven of them were able to make the weekend which was a cracking effort. Sadly my sister, Kerry, couldn’t make the trip as she now resides in Malaysia and is teaching. My cousin Brona was only too happy to step in for the family photograph. I’m not sure how funny Kerry found it though. CS

Jodie’s tips to keep the family active over the school holidays... It’s never been more important to get children active. The use of the internet and computer games, combined with increased car usage and parental concerns about allowing children out alone, has resulted in lower levels of activity in kids... There are plenty of activities that the whole family can get involved in which the kids will love (and parents too!). These will set a great example and contribute to keeping your children fit, active, and most importantly, healthy

• Walking or running with the family Get outside, there are some beautiful walks or runs around the Cotswolds... go and explore. We have all the ingredients for a great family activity right on our doorstep.

• Family cycling Even if your children are too young to control a bike on their own, you can buy child seats or attachments that link their bike to yours so that you can all enjoy a session together.

• Outdoor activities for the family Whether it’s playing in the garden, a game of ‘tag’ in the local park or some fun on the swings and slides, simple outdoor games and activities are great for quality family time and exercise. The children will love it and you’ll also benefit from the getting your heart rate a little higher. Make sure all the family

• Swimming with the family Swimming is always a sure-fire hit with the kids. In fact the difficulty is persuading them to get out of the pool. Swimming is an excellent family activity because it’s great fun and everyone can participate at their own level.

JULY 2013

• Indoor games for the family Badminton, ten-pin bowling and tabletennis are all activities that everyone in the family can have a go.

members can get involved so that everyone has the chance to exercise.

• Family activity holidays Nowadays, there is a growing trend for the traditional beach holiday to be supplemented by something a little more dynamic and adventurous that involves sport and/or other activities. E.g. Water sports, trekking or cycling. CS

“A little horse with a BIG future” On a recent stable tour, I caught up with Barry Preece, the Cheltenham based owner of Trackmate... a little horse with a big future who is trained by James Evans just over the county border in Worcestershire I have visited many training establishments over the years but few have impressed me as much as the Broadwas On Teme set up of James and Jane Evans. If you’re looking for a small yard that gets results, look no further, you’ve just found it: www.hjamesevans.co.uk

Q. So, Barry, how did you acquireTrackmate? A. I acquired Trackmate from the Brightwells sales at Cheltenham in May 2011. James Evans had about half a dozen marked that took the eye in the brochure. He has a good eye and experience in what to look out for, as he was former professional Jockey who rode in two Grand Nationals. So the smallest horse (not quite 16h but with the biggest ears!) came through the ring and it was obvious that no one else had any interest in him. I was lucky enough to get him for a bargain basement price. The trainer had picked him out after seeing him before he went into the ring after watching a point to point video of him. He told me he was clearly staying on in his races and was pulling the arms out of the poor female jockey aboard. So, he said to me this little fella has an engine and will stay - just teach him to settle at the start of his races and you’ll have some fun with him. You couldn’t quite see him in the sale ring as he came through - just a set of ears going up and down as he was walking around. I said to James "he’s not very big and isn’t he bred to be a sprinter?" and he said "So was Red Rum”. One maiden bid and he was mine! JULY 2013

Left: Trackmate with Liam Treadwell and Jane Evans.

Q. What are his future plans? A. Regarding future plans; the formula that is working is 3m hurdles, preferably going left handed with Liam Treadwell in the plate. We are looking at the Pertemps Qualifier at Cheltenham in October then a 3m handicap hurdle at Cheltenham in November. These of course lead to The Pertemps Hurdle at the Festival. Long term aim is the 3m Handicap Hurdle at Aintree at The Grand National meeting. We aren’t convinced he will like Cheltenham (flat galloping tracks seem to suit him best) Quite proud of the fact the little wee fella has earned his right to race at Cheltenham with the elite of horses and trainers. Most of all, I’m happy for our trainer.

Q. How would you describe James as a Trainer? A. It’s a small, relaxed environment and they are happy to have all different owners who are important to them which they treat equally. They have time for everyone and are happy to show them around their yard and horses. The other week they had 20 children of all ages and were showing them around the stables, the gallops, the starting stalls, the jumps and chatting to them. James and his wife Jane are incredibly hard working. They have help of a small team helping them but they are completely hands on with everything. Their desire to succeed in the very tough and competitive world of racing is plain to see. They are conscientious and committed to each individual horse and owners and always have time to chat and they are honest and straight talking.

Q. And very quickly, what does Cheltenham mean to you? A. Cheltenham is home, it’s cosmopolitan without losing the local touch and of course it’s the headquarters of jump racing! CS Cathryn Fry Twitter @cathrynfry

ROCK GOD Rick had kindly taken time from his full-on rehearsing schedule to speak with Style… WORDS: MARTIN MCDONALD MM: What brings you to Gloucestershire?

RW: “Two shows at Blackfriar’s Abbey in Gloucester. These are unique shows where I will be performing with two of my sons, Oliver who up until recently was playing with YES and my second eldest son Adam who plays with Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne and would you believe Will Young as well! He does a lot of things but he’s been with Black Sabbath for ten years now. Also playing will be my daughter Jemma. Although we have performed together at times we have never had all four of us playing together and it will never happen again because Adam’s away touring nine months of the year with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath and Oliver’s away all of the time. In fact Adam flew in from Finland the night before the concerts at Blackfriar’s and the chances of seeing him are quite amazing really.” MM: You mentioned a little bit about performing with the family, tell us a little bit about that because it must be exciting for you?

RW: “It’s nice, I’ve got six kids and in fact there will only be two missing. There’s Gemma, Oliver and Adam who will be playing. My son Ben, he’s flown in from Switzerland specially to see the shows and to see his brothers and sisters who he doesn’t get to see very often, and his nieces and nephews. The only two that are missing are Amanda, my daughter in America and my son Oscar who lives in Chile. Yes it’s lovely to play with them, they don’t like me saying it but they’re still kids to me. It’s nice and it’s a one-off and because it’s a one-off we’ll have a lot of fun with it. I dread to think some of the stories they’re likely

128 COTSWOLD STYLE

to tell about their Dad, but there you go I’ll have to live with it won’t I really.”

MM: Clearly you’ve had huge success with YES and with your solo career, what’s left for you to do? What are those big personal ambitions?

RW: “Well there’s tons! There’s always stuff to do. We’re doing a big Musical stage version of Journey (to the Centre of the Earth) with Roger Dean staging and heaven knows what else. We’re taking that around the world and there’s a hundred and something shows lined up for that. There’s always more stuff to do. I’m lucky in as much as I’m spread out, I do a lot of telly, radio and I’ve got another book coming out, so there’s a real mixture of stuff I do. I’m doing less and less one man shows and probably the last of these will be when I do the Edinburgh Festival this year with one of those and that’ll be it then. But there’s always so much to do that I haven’t had a day off for years and I quite like it like that. So there will always be stuff to do to be honest with you…. and after four marriages, there has to be!” MM: There must be so many highlights but is there something from your career that really has that stand out, wow?

RW: “To be honest with you the answer is no. I’ve had hundreds of great highs, you have hundreds of great lows. But there isn’t one thing you stand and look at and go, wow. There are loads and loads of defining moments. Defining moments when you look back. If I had to stop and never play anymore from now and somebody said, what is the one thing? There honestly isn’t. There’s a lot of defining moments in your life. But you don’t really realise them until many years later. So I honestly don’t have one, particular one that is.”

MM: There’s a whole world of music styles and people making great music. Is there anyone in particular with whom you’d really like to collaborate? RW: “That’s a hard one. I’ve been lucky with all the sessions and the things I’ve done over so many years. I never did anything with McCartney… I would have liked to have done something or played on something of Paul McCartney’s or done something with him. That would have been nice. I think he’s just a genius songwriter so that would have been really good to do.” MM: What do you think of today’s music artists and the way music is going?

RW: “I don’t really, I mean there’s a lot of music I listen to and hear and with six kids I get sent all sorts of stuff. You like this and don’t like that. I remember the first time I heard MUSE and I thought they’re either going to be sensational or disappear with out trace. Thankfully they’ve been brilliant, they are a fantastic band and a very special bunch. I am not a great rap fan although amazingly enough a lot of my stuff gets used for rap. Luckily there’s room for all kinds of JULY 2013

music. At the end of the day it’s the general public that choose whatever they like – so that’s what’s most important. I listen to quite a lot. For me there’s too much emphasis on singers these days, you never ever hear about a great new guitarist or a great new base player or a great drummer, or a great new sax player, it’s always all about the singer. I think that’s a shame, but that’s life.” MM: You’ve been down to Gloucestershire now in preparation for this series of events has it give you the chance to form an impression of the County and Cheltenham.

RW: I know quite a lot about Gloucestershire, my eldest boy Oliver lives in Bourton on the Water and he was in Northleach before that, so I know the area very well because we come and visit an awful lot. I do like medieval places and towns so I’ve got a soft spot for Gloucester. Cheltenham is just a beautiful city. I think Gloucester could be stunning but it needs a whole group of people to go: “Hold on a minute let’s get rid of the crap bit and sort it all out”. There’s so many great parts of Gloucester that need a bit of hoovering, and I don’t mean rubbish by that, you know what I mean. I think Gloucester’s lovely but sometimes people can’t see through the things perhaps shouldn’t be there, to see such JULY 2013

wonderful medieval buildings and the Cathedral. Actually I like Gloucester I must admit.”

MM: It’s not widely known that you have a fantastic knowledge personally of medieval history and I guess you must feel an affinity to a place like Gloucester Cathedral.

RW: “I do, specially because of that. The whole medieval period I find fascinating. I’ve done trips over to Estonia, to Tallinn and I like to look at medieval cities. The word medieval conjures up “primitive” but it was far from a primitive era. It was a very advanced era for its time. It’s nice when you go to medieval cities and towns, but sometimes you do have to wade through a lot of modern architecture or architecture that really doesn’t fit. If I had my way all medieval cities and towns would be like Tallinn, the walled medieval city. It’s not changed at all, they’re not allowed to change anything, it’s as it was. Yes they have modern shops but the modern shops are within all the old buildings. So even if someone knows little about the medieval period they can actually say: “Oh wow this is how it was, this is how it is.” I appreciate that that’s not always easy because people have to live in the cities and they move on, but yeah, it’s a fascinating period of time.”

MM: If you ever got the opportunity to take part in one of those jungle programmes, a reality show, would you like to do that?

RW: (laughing) “I have turned down I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, I’ve turned that down four times. I’ve turned down Strictly Come Dancing four times, I’ve turned down Dancing on Ice twice, I’ve turned down Celebrity Big Brother twice. Basically I’m not interested because, well there’s two things really, the main one being, that’s the thing you get remembered for. I know loads of people who’ve done it, and everything else they’ve done in their lives gets kicked to one side with: “Oh you did Jungle!” If it were for financial purposes I’d have done them all because they offer stonking amounts of money and if you turn it down they come back and offer you more money. If you turn in down again they come back and say what do you want then? Someone I know said: “Why don’t you do it? Think of the money”, but I really don’t want my genitals eaten my rats, it’s not something that really appeals to me, not for any amount of money in the world! If I’d wanted to be mutilated by strange creatures I’d have stayed married to one of my exwives…” CS

The Great Outdoors This month, I have reached a ‘crisis in parenting’ point. My children are allofasudden asking for more freedom. Yikes. (That just about sums up my reaction to my 7 year old daughter requesting permission to cycle to her friend’s house half a mile away). I have had to calm down a bit since the first moment I contemplated this prospect… when my son, who is now 9, first asked permission to walk to the park with a friend I actually felt tearful. My reaction was a mingling of fear and loss – genuinely wondering if he’s old enough / street wise enough to stay safe and realising that my baby is growing up. Anyway, he did go (this was last summer) and managed to stay alive, not get run over, flashed at or abducted by aliens. The best part, though was that TWO of my friends from the village called me to see if I knew he was out, so unusual was the sighting – and we live on a main road. Daughter, Libbi wanted to go from home - the back way, via two fields and a lane to another farm. Maybe it’s the second child thing, but there were fewer tears from me this time and I was a tiny bit excited on her behalf…. Nevertheless, heart was in mouth as she set off on the rather epic bike ride through three gates and a field with a Bull. However, she was thrilled at her new found independence. So much so, it seems, that Libbi aged 7 (nearly 8) took it upon herself to alter her route and bypass her friend’s house… instead, continuing on down the lane for about another mile to visit the ‘barky but cute’ dogs on the corner. It was around this point that a very Nice Lady had to brake fairly suddenly coming round the bend to avoid daughter riding bike up middle of lane. Concerned at this small child alone in the middle of nowhere, Nice Lady stopped to check all was in order. “I’m lost” said Libbi. She was SOOOO not lost! I still have no idea why she claimed she was – other than seeking an opportunity for a bit of drama. Anyway, after a further 5 minutes of

130 COTSWOLD STYLE

questioning, who should come round the corner, to witness Libbi – bike in the middle of the road, looking forlorn and TALKING TO STRANGERS – but my brother. Who actually lives in Denmark so this was about as likely as bumping into Santa in July. (He was apparently on his way to visit us and several hours early). So alarmed was he at Libbi’s woeful tale and the somewhat shocked face of Nice Lady, he elected to take my daughter, not back to me, but to my parent’s house instead, believing perhaps that I had lost my mind and wasn’t capable of making sensible decisions regarding my children’s welfare. I’m surprised he didn’t swing by the house to gather up my son too. A family meeting ensued, where I was chastised for allowing this sorry state of

affairs to occur, an agreement was made to arm lone offspring with a mobile phone and a decision taken that solitary cycling trips were not appropriate for anyone under 10. For now, both children seem content to stay home – but this has brought about a new crisis. They have discovered Skype and Facebook chat and so all I ever hear from upstairs is them yelling at their mates across the internet. But it is sort of reassuring to know they – even as technological natives – still think you have to shout loud to be heard so far away (haha).
