welcome

editor’s foreword

June is a month of celebration as we mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee - 60 years on the throne. In light of this momentous occasion we bring you our own Jubilee themed features, including our patriotic fashion spread, Jubilee inspired hair advice and recipes and we reveal the very first Jubilee Diamond, designed and created by Beards. We talk to a Gloucester couple who are celebrating their own 60 year anniversary and find out how business is booming as commerce celebrates the Best of British. The Queen’s Jubilee has a personal significance for me as my own parents celebrated 60 years together on their Diamond Wedding Anniversary this year. Margaret and Peter Francis (pictured) were married in 1952 and admit that 60 years of marriage takes compromise and hard work. Remembering the Queen’s accession to the throne in 1952 Margaret admits that ‘even though there was still rationing there was a sense of hope and the new ‘Elizabethan era’ brought with it a sense of optimism.’ And after 60 years on the throne, the Queen has reached a remarkable milestone - the only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897. Communities all over the region will be celebrating over an extended bank holiday weekend, and with it brings optimism for a boost to the local economy. This month we also bring you an exclusive interview with Hollywood actor Jack Davenport, who returned to his former school, Cheltenham College to mentor young drama students and provide inspiration for their future careers. We also introduce the line-up for next month’s Gloucester Food Festival and offer fantastic reader competitions - see pages 91 and 139. This month I will be handing over the reins of Editor to my successor Emma Roberts as I take a sabbatical to raise my young family. I will be continuing as Web Editor to develop and grow our new and improved website. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to serve our readers as Editor and extremely proud of all that we are achieving at Cotswold Style. Enjoy this month’s magazine.

The former pupil of the prestigious college admits that he wouldn’t be in the privileged position he is in if it weren’t for the dedciated teachers who encouraged him as a student. “When I was at school, drama was an extracurricular activity, it wasn’t a subject, but there were a couple of teachers who were prepared to put in huge amounts of time and effort to direct plays so without their passion I wouldn’t be here,” says Jack. “My school years at Cheltenham College were hugely important.” Performing in plays at the college every year, Jack had found his vocation and managed to find work professionally soon after leaving school. He wrote a letter to John Cleese asking for work in production behind the camera and landed himself with a small role! “I asked if I could get some experience in the film production but he misunderstood my request and handed the letter to the casting department. I ended up with a part!” Soon after appearing as a student zookeeper in Fierce Creatures, Jack landed the role of Miles Stewart in the BBC drama This Life. Since then he has famously appeared in Pirates of the

18 COTSWOLD STYLE

Caribbean and its sequels, which has rocketed Jack to stardom. Jack accepted an invitation to return to his former college to run drama workshops and have a Q&A session with pupils before attending a black tie dinner. “I was flattered to be asked to come and speak to pupils, it was really nice to be asked. I think it’s important to let young people kow that they have to be realistic about going into show business. It’s hard work and it would be remiss of me to pretend that it was all a bed of roses. It is important for young people to be clear about their motivation for going into show business, to make sure that it is not all about fame.” Jack now lives in New York but comes back to Cheltenham for the occasional Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse and to visit his father, who lives in Stow-onthe-wold. “I’ve been lucky to be part of films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, I had a remarkable time working on films on such a huge scale. It’s definitely been a highlight.” Now a father to his son, Harry, born in 2010, Jack admits that he doesn’t know what he would have done if he hadn’t gone into acting. “Drama is a valuable subject in schools and a great career choice. My personal goal this year is to keep going and CS working hard.” CS JUNE 2012

a great family D FOO day out FESTIVAL R

GLOUCESTE

ND JULY 20TH-22

Next month sees the return of the hugely popular Gloucester Quays Food Festival, packed with live cookery theatres, masterclasses, family entertainment and two of the UK’s favourite TV chefs Gino D’Acampo and James Martin. Here, we show you the highlights of this year’s event... Gloucester Quays is delighted to announce the return of its free three-day Food Festival this summer, following its scorching debut last year which attracted over 80,000 visitors. The team behind the show have once again secured two of the UK’s favourite TV chefs, Gino D’Acampo and James Martin, who will be cooking live on stage on Saturday and Sunday. The event will also see a debut Gloucester appearance from hot new kids on the block Tom and Henry Herbert, as seen on Channel 4’s The Fabulous Baker Brothers, also cooking live on Saturday and Sunday. The brothers come from a long line of family foodies and are carrying on the tradition with gusto. Both are 5th generation bakers with baking in their genes, and between them have put their bakery and butchery, Hobb’s House in Chipping Sodbury, firmly on the UK foodie map. The fact that they’re good looking young men hasn’t hindered them either! The festival will kick off with a powerhouse performance in every sense of the word on Friday, when Gloucester and England rugby legend and Celebrity Masterchef winner Phil Vickery MBE will be the star of the show, recreating his winning dishes that blew away Masterchef judges Greg Wallace and John Torode to see him take the ultimate TV cooking crown. Phil will be the headline performer on a day put together by Cotswold Style Magazine, which will feature a selection

of multi award-winning chefs from some of the county’s finest restaurants, all cooking live and sharing their experiences and tips with the audience. The day will be kicked off by Rob Rees, The Cotswold Chef, and will also feature Paul Mottram, head chef at Cheltenham’s Hotel Du Vin, and David Kelman, head chef at Ellenborough Park, Cheltenham. The event will also feature masterclass performances featuring tasting sessions and the opportunity for visitors to ‘have a go’, plus more than 60 great stalls selling fine food and drink to try and buy, plus cookware, crafts and accessories. Entry to the Festival is free including Phil’s cookery demonstrations, for those wanting to see Gino D'Acampo, James Martin and Tom and Henry Herbert, the organisers are urging people to book before the event to guarantee a seat. They can be booked online at www.gloucesterquaysfoodfestival.co.uk or at the Gloucester Quays Outlet customer service desks. “I can’t wait to see everyone again - we had so much fun last year,” says Gino. “I’ve got some new tricks up my sleeve and some tasty new dishes to serve up this year using fresh ingredients from Gloucestershire and far flung shores so I hope you can make it!” James Martin confirms: “Sampling the delights of some local producers last year really inspired me during the cooking demonstrations so I’m looking JUNE 2012

Anne Bartlett is a specialist Blue Badge Tourist Guide for the Cotswolds and feels proud to share the region’s rich heritage and stunning landscape with visitors from around the world. Here, she chats to Eve Holmes. Photograph Mike Charity. Anne Bartlett feels privileged to be able to share the beauty and history of the Cotswolds with enthusiastic visitors from all over the world. As a specialist Blue Badge Tourist Guide, Anne relishes in revealing historic facts about the region’s hotspots and seeing the delight that it brings. “The Cotswolds is such a fascinating region and I want to give as much information to visitors so they go away having enjoyed their time here. It adds value to their holiday and it is very important to me,” says Anne. Previously working for the Visitor Centre at Severn Trent Water, Anne was responsible for taking visitors on a guided tour behind the scenes of the works. “It became very popular and soon we expanded the tour to the reservoirs in the Heart of England, which was a great day out for the family.” Hearing about a Blue Badge training course to become a tourist guide for the whole region Anne signed up to the nine month intensive course which included lectures, practical work and guided tours. After completing the final exams Anne was then a qualified Blue Badge Tourist Guide, meaning that she has been trained and tested to meet the highest standards of guiding required by the Institute of Tourist Guides. “The area is so rich in history and varied and I enjoy sharing the Cotswolds with visitors. No two tours are the same and you never know what might happen there have been a few unexpected moments!

22 COTSWOLD STYLE

“On a tour of Cheltenham Ladies College I was talking to my group about famous former pupils and behind me a voice piped up adding herself to the list. It was Fiona Mactaggart, Labour MP, and she stopped to talk to the group which made their day. “On another occasion I was taking a coach of visitors through Stanton and Sue Barker cycled past and gave a wave. It is these unexpected moments that make each tour different and exciting.” Visitors also delight in the chance to meet the guardians of the region’s stately homes and historic places. “The owners of our estates are delighted to welcome visitors. The Earl of Wemyss has always been very charming when we visit Stanway Manor, taking time out to show visitors around his estate. It is also a privilege to meet Lady Ashcombe at Sudeley Castle and on a visit to The Laskett Gardens, the owner Sir Roy Strong was delighted to chat to my group in detail before exploring the gardens. It really enhances the tour,” says Anne. Living next to one of Cheltenham’s most prestigious landmarks, The Pittville Pump Room, Anne is passionate about the beauty of the Cotswolds and spends time conducting extra research before a tour to enhance her visitors’ experience. The themes of her tours can be as diverse as exploring the region’s hotspots, film locations, famous gardens and many more. Anne’s knowledge of the area is abundant and spending even a few minutes in her company is fascinating as she reels off historic facts and intersting nuggets of JUNE 2012

information about the Cotswolds. “People love the history of the area. The Cotswolds were once prosperous from the wool trade but with competition from Europe it crashed. The Cotswolds then became an important centre for the Arts and Crafts Movement in the early 20th century which brought about a revival. Today the area is thriving and its honeygold cottages and rolling hills attracts top name celebrities keen to own a getaway pad and enjoy the quintessential Cotswolds.” JUNE 2012

When asked for interesting facts about the area Anne is quick to share a couple. “Our rich cloth making history is still very much alive and not many people realise that the yellow cloth used for tennis balls is made here in the Cotswolds. Also, Stroud inventor Edward Budding invented the lawn mower in 1827 after watching the machines that cut the nap on cloth. He realised that the same process could be used to cut grass.” Anne’s passion for the Cotswolds is infectious and it is clear to see why visitors

from around the world choose her to be their personal tour guide around our glorious region. “Having the Blue Badge accreditation is enormously satisfying and the studying is ongoing. I strive to create a unique experience for each visitor. It is very important to me that they have an amazing experience here.” CS To contact Anne please visit her website www.tourandexplore.com or follow her on twitter @GuideU.

Broadway

the jewel of the Cotswolds

Broadway has it all - history, beauty and great shopping. The beautiful village of Broadway is situated beneath the Worcestershire hills of the Cotswolds. This charming and quaint village attracts visitors from all over the world and it is easy to see why. With a history that dates back to the 16th century, this little village has it all. Featuring an array of good quality pubs, restaurants and hotels as well as a range of independent and boutique shops in a tranquil and natural setting, this is the perfect location for a day trip or weekend away. Its location also makes it an ideal base for visiting other glorious Cotswold attractions such as Stratford upon Avon, Cheltenham, Oxford, Bath amongst others. From Saturday 9th until Sunday 17th June, Broadway will play host to the Broadway Arts Festival. Dedicated to John Singer Sargent RA and the JUNE 2012

Broadway Colony, featuring artist and garden designer Alfred Parsons RA (1847-1920). This biennial event was first established in 2010 with the sole purpose of recognising Broadway’s artistic heritage. It celebrated the 125th anniversary of John Singer Sargent RA first visit to Broadway and the now iconic painting of ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’, painted by Sargent between 1885 and 1886. His artistic talent was one of many that were drawn to the village, others included writers, actors and architects such as Henry James, Mary Anderson and Edwin Austin amongst others. The idea of the festival was dreamed up in 2009 when this link between these fantastic Edwardian artists and the village was rediscovered. This year’s festival is jammed packed full of events that all the family can enjoy.

From a Photographic Exhibition to an Arts Fair, Piano Recitals and live music from The Voice UK contestant Vince Freeman, there is something to suit every single person that attends. The whole village from artists, local schools, traders and residents have got together to make the 2012 festival a huge success. If 2010 is anything to go by then this tradition will definitely be continuing for many years to come. Walking through Broadway, it is easy to forget the hustle and bustle of your day to day life. Whether you want to have afternoon tea and cream cakes in the picturesque tea-room, find a unique item of clothing in one of the many independent shops or just take in the unique history, Broadway has really earned its name as the ‘Jewel of The Cotswolds’. QU QUEEN’S JUBILEE

The Queen’s Jubilee

60th wedding anniversary...

Gloucester couple Edna and John McIntyre are celebrating their own 60th anniversary in the year of the Queen’s Jubilee. Married in Nottingham in 1952, Edna and John, a Sergeant in the Air Force, met at a local tea dance. Once married they moved around the world with the Air Force and settled in Gloucester in the late 1960s. “It comes as a bit of a surprise to celebrate 60 years of marriage,” admits Edna, a mother of seven with 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. “There hasn’t been any particular secret to a long marriage, the truth is that in our generation there wasn’t really any other than working your way

through problems that came along. “The year of our marriage was the year of the Queen’s accession to the throne, and the country felt an injection of hope. It was spectacular to see a new monarch coming to the throne and not everyone had the privilege of owning a television so most of us had to go to the cinema to see the ceremonies.” As a Monarchist, Edna and John were thrilled to receive a congratulatory card from The Queen on their anniversary, particularly as Edna recalls her encounters with The Queen as an 18-year-old Princess on Royal duties in Nottingham and again in Germany (where the couple and their young family were posted with the Air Force) during

Tom Wharton, owner of Barrington Ayre, the Cotswolds’ visiting tailor, is proud to deliver a ‘Made in England’ label to his customers in the year of the Diamond Jubilee. “I am incredibly patriotic and love the fact that we can highlight our Made in Britain clothing during the Jubilee Year. We have seen increased traffic and sales on the back of it,” says Tom. Barrington Ayre’s Made in England label was born after three years making its clothing in Portugal through an English company. “I worked alongside my English wool suppliers to find a top quality English workroom to make all of our clothing. There are only a small number of these factories left and I spent time visiting them, working alongside them and making sure that they made the clothing to our high standards. I loved their ethos

and the quality of their clothing, so I decided to work with them and supported them through their tough periods. This held me in great stead when everyone wanted to move their manufacturing back to the UK. The workrooms rewarded my loyalty by turning down top name brands and stuck with me as they believed in the British spirit of Barrington Ayre and the fact that I was there through their tough times.” Tom admits that customers seek out the company thanks in part to its Made in England label. “It is of paramount importance to us about having our clothing made in England. It is also a huge selling point and we have customers from all over the world asking us to make their clothes purely on the fact that we are Made in England. They then love the fact that we also offer a very traditional English

I just wish that local governments and the the coalition would support smaller firms and help us set up workrooms and factories to create local jobs. This is an amazing place to live and work and being from The Cotswolds and Made in England is a huge selling point.” CS www.barringtonayre.co.uk

a long legacy…

Eric Barton gets on site with local carpenter Lance Turbyfield. Photograph Rob Wheatman. One hundred and twenty five years is a long time by anyone’s imagination. In fact it was a hundred and twenty five years ago that Mercedes- Benz was formed and the first ever man (Thomas Stevens) cycled round the World. It’s also the birth of a long carpentry and construction legacy in Cheltenham that happily still exists to this day. Lance Turbyfield is the direct descendent in a long distinguished line of carpenters going back as far as his Great Great Grandfather. I arrive on site in Cheltenham to find Lance driving a digger. ‘Won’t be a mo’, he says as he leaps off the digger with a big confident grin to shake my hand. There’s passion and pride in his tone as he chats about not only his company, but his enduring family history in carpentry and building. ’My Dad was a Barnwoods apprentice and I’m also City and Guilds qualified. There’s no substitute for training, learning your craft and getting some real experience’, he comments. Lance should know, as he’s worked all over the planet honing his skills. It reads like a travel journal; Miami. Haiti, Jamaica and Turks and Caicos. Lance further comments,’ being able work with so many talented tradesmen in other countries teaches you a lot about the job and yourself. It was a real learning curve to work with shipwrights and truly skilled craftsmen who really know their stuff ’. There’s a deep - rooted sense of pride in his voice when he talks about his father and the family legacy that in a sense he has to bear and carry forward. It’s tantamount to a degree of pressure in something that’s got real dynasty attached to it. No bad thing. Lance tells me,’ I’m all about quality and having a logical approach to everything that I do. It has to be right, not only for me, but my customers too. JUNE 2012

There’s simply no point in doing a job unless it’s done perfectly’. The star player in any team does need good support and Lance is no different. He goes on to say,’ I have some great lads working with me, but I do honestly fear for the newer generation of carpenters and builders coming up through the ranks. They simply don’t have the training to be able to handle the kind of quality work that we produce. We need to get younger people more galvanised in the building and carpentry trade’. Stern words indeed but true I suppose, or we’ll all be living in ‘Cowboy cottage’ if we’re not careful. Lance further quips,’ my seven year old Son can drive a small digger better that some blokes who say they do it for a living’. Now that is starting them early. Lance Turbyfield has a heartfelt belief that his three sons (7, 6 and 5yrs) should be following him into the business. ‘It’s the future of not only

my business and my work ethics, but also my family’s long tradition of supplying quality work at a reasonable price’ he says. When Lance Turbyfield employs anybody it seems to be very unrelenting in the standards that are set. Lance comments, ‘first we try, then we trust and only then do they work for us. My customers will always come first. All my work is by referral or repeat jobs’. The business which is N.H.B.C. registered undertakes about twenty projects a year with the latest job (£160K) being completed in just three months. Effective project management is at the very heart of what Turbyfield and Sons do and all projects are thoroughly planned out and executed to make sure that projects finish on time and on budget. The future of the business looks rosy indeed, with the order books glowing healthily and a portfolio of happy satisfied clients. Lance further says, ’we seem to be bucking the trend right now as we’re in a period of controlled growth. We keep our overheads low, with no fancy vans or extraneous expenditure’. Good to know that there’s a level head there when you need it. It’s crystal clear how fond of his three children he is. Weekend rockclimbing seems to feature as a hobby, as does taking his family (when he gets time) on holiday. Lance finally says, ’I’d love my three boys to learn a trade when they’re older and join me in the business. It’s a business I love and just hope they acquire the same passion I have for carpentry and construction’. Looks like the Turbyfield legacy is in good hands. Leader of the Gloucester City Council Paul James celebrates this month’s Queen’s Jubilee...

To contact Paul, visit www.pauljames.org.uk or follow him on Twitter @cllrpauljames. JUNE 2012

Gloucester has a rich but mixed history when it comes to our royal connections. Our cathedral has had a king crowned there (Henry III) and a king buried (Edward II). At Christmas, successive Kings from the time of Edward the Confessor held court in Gloucester. But in the Civil War, we were on the Parliamentarian side, holding out against the Royalists and changing the course of England’s history. The Royals didn’t forget this in a hurry and Charles II tore down the city’s walls as an act of revenge. All that said, our affection for the current monarch has never been in question. I’ve been fortunate enough to welcome Her Majesty to Gloucester on two occasions – to the Cathedral for the annual Maundy Service in 2003 and to see the progress of the city’s regeneration in 2009. On both occasions crowds packed the streets in a genuine display of respect and appreciation for Her Majesty. I was Sheriff of Gloucester during the Golden Jubilee year and attended concerts, street parties and community events to mark the occasion. For the Diamond Jubilee, just as much is planned in the city, if not more. As well as celebrations in Gloucester Park and in local communities, a beacon will be lit and the city centre streets will be decked with bunting. And we will uphold the tradition of presenting the monarch with a lamprey pie to mark the occasion. The city used to send one every year at Christmas until 1836 when it was deemed to be too expensive. Now it is reserved for special occasions such as Coronations and Jubilees. I recall the last time we performed this task for Her Majesty’s the Golden Jubilee. Then, as now, lampreys from the Severn were protected species and we had to import them from Canada where they are considered pests. This time, however, it seemed to capture the imagination of the media, with coverage in the Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph, BBC Television and even

Canadian TV. And that’s not to mention the way it’s gone viral on the internet! Added to all of this, I’ve received a letter from someone who was involved in making the pie for the Coronation, when the task was undertaken by RAF Innsworth and had emails from abroad. The pie crust is a very ornate piece of work, with the city’s crest adorned - in contrast with the lampreys themselves which have been compared with vacuum cleaner attachments! I’m hoping that the pie will be presented during our Jubilee Royal visit later in June. In addition to the real pie, we’ll be presenting another containing messages of support from local schoolchildren on lamprey-shaped pieces of paper. It would be nice to be able to produce a pie every year that is unique to Gloucester. We can’t really import lampreys from Canada to do this every year and besides we’ve got some great local produce ourselves. So, I’m hoping we’ll soon be able to launch a new Gloucester Pie for the 21st century. I believe that it’s important to maintain traditions, however quirky – whether it is the Lamprey Pie, the Cheese Rolling or the Mock Mayor of Barton. As well as being part of our heritage, they do provide some light relief and at times we need that. I don’t believe there is any prospect of Her Majesty actually eating the Lamprey Pie and it’s probably just as well. King Henry I, according to legend, died of food poisoning after eating a ‘surfeit of lampreys’ in 1135. We’ve tried hard over the last four centuries to repair relations with the Monarchy after our little run-in during the Siege of Gloucester. A repeat of King Henry’s misfortune during Jubilee year could set that back. That’s not something I’d want on my conscience, so I hope Her Majesty’s courtiers will advise her that the historic Lamprey Pie is better to look at than to taste. CS

need more energy?

In today’s hectic lifestyle a sauna is a great place to relax and recharge. Here, Iain Cother from The Bathroom Studio, reveals the top health benefits of using a sauna...

‘A SAUNA RELAXES THE BODY, IMPROVES CIRCULATION AND STIMULATES THE RELEASE OF ENDORPHINS – THE BODY’S NATURAL ‘FEEL GOOD’ CHEMICAL’

JUNE 2012

Research shows that people who use a sauna on a daily basis feel better, sleep better and overall have more energy. Read on for the top 10 health benefits of using a sauna. The number one benefit of using a sauna is to relieve stress. Medical studies have shown that stress in our daily lives affects our health. The sauna provides a warm space without any distractions, and the heat relaxes the body, improves circulation and stimulates the release of endorphins – the body’s natural ‘feel good’ chemical. Under high heat, the body temperature rises causing blood vessels to dilate and circulation to increase. The increased blood flow accelerates the body’s natural healing process which relaxes muscles and soothes aches and pains. In today’s lifestyles, many of us do not actively sweat on a daily basis – in fact we go to lengths to ensure that we don’t! Sweat production is primarily for cooling the body, and is composed of 99 per cent water, but deep sweating in a sauna can help reduce levels of toxins commonly picked up from our environment. Saunas are one of the oldest treatments for the skin – when deep sweating occurs, the skin is cleansed and dead skin cells are replaced. Cleansing of the pores improves the capillary circulation and gives the skin a soft, revitalised appearance. The sauna is not a cure for acne, but often helps by cleaning the pores from inside out. Using a sauna also helps you to sleep!

As all of us know when you don’t have a good night’s sleep, you feel sluggish and demotivated the following day. In addition to the release of endorphins, when body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, facilitating sleep. The social benefit of a sauna is often forgotten and should not be trivialised. With busy schedules and hectic lives the sauna can be a perfect environment to relax and socialise with family and friends. Sauna users will be pleased to hear that it can help to burn calories. Some individuals may experience high amounts of calories burned initially – particularly those in poor shape, but over the long term most will sweat off 500 grams in a sauna in a single session, consuming nearly 300 calories in the process. Fighting illness is an important health benefit – studies have shown that saunas significantly reduce colds and influenza. As the body is exposed to a sauna’s heat and steam, it produces white blood cells more rapidly, which in turn helps fight illness and kill viruses. The final benefit of using a sauna is that is feels good! As we go through our stressful lives, the sauna provides a pampering treat where we can relax and restore body and soul... so why not get one in your own home? a stunning sight Head Gardener at Sudeley Castle, Jon Hodder, encourages visitors to experience the beauty of the gardens during Rose Week. Photograph Xander Casey. Flaming June? Following this May I have my doubts. After what has been one of the wettest springs I can recall, we may well be faced with two options. We will either be baked by the heat of a suddenly punishing sun, eager to banish all thought of the lengthy ‘Winterspring’ we have just endured or, and I feel this is the more likely option, we will be subjected to further biblical downpours until the ground conditions are similar to those experienced around the time of the Black Death. A period so wet that crops rotted in the fields and mysteriously large fungal fruiting bodies appeared, as if set by the very Devil himself. Of course, that was a long time ago and medieval crop-drying technology wasn’t all it could have been. However, without recourse to modern methods of production and storage, this year and its meteorological vagaries would probably be on its way to plunging us into a famine. The weather has had moments of kindness. The recent visit by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, Patron of the Queen Katherine Parr Quincentenary Festival, was blessed with a dry and comparatively warm day. It was a memorable occasion with a palpable atmosphere of celebration. There were lots of smiles, the joyous sight of local schoolchildren in Tudor costumes and at JUNE 2012

least one Harris Hawk. I was fortunate to be able to meet our future Queen, in the courtyard of the Castle. We shook hands and she spoke to me about the gardens. I enjoyed the sense of history evoked by the meeting. Sudeley has the power to present the perceptive visitor with the past as a living experience. The Royal visit is a good example. Despite the dreariness of the ‘cheating’ spring, nature has still responded to the increasing daylight hours. The amount of young ducklings that gather in the gardeners yard for feeding in the mornings is noticeable. When the feed is scattered, a benign chaos ensues. Ducklings are invariably separated from the safety of their hungry mothers, and for a few busy minutes the area is alive with concerned quacking and plaintive peeping as different families hurriedly re-group. In previous years we have raised the occasional orphan. I recall one such unfortunate who spent a happy few weeks growing up in the safety of the greenhouse... complete with her own hastily made ‘pond’. They may only be ‘bloomin’ mallards’, but who can resist the charm of a newborn duckling? For those of you who may be thinking of visiting us, Rose Week could well be the time. The second week of June this year: the date has moved occasionally as we try to place Rose week to coincide

with the optimum flowering of the Queens Garden. Our aim is to present you with an abundance of old-fashioned roses in full bloom: a stunning sight and of course these traditional varieties present an abundant perfume, the combination almost overwhelming the senses. For further information of up coming events, including a charming lecture by Sudeley’s Garden Design Consultant Sir Roddy Llewellyn I must recommend that you consult our website. Until next month... don’t cut your grass too short, keep on top of your weeds and turn your compost! CS

A bespoke kitchen is the perfect solution to fit your lifestyle and space. Here we inspire you with four stunning kitchens from Roundhouse...

Forbes: A white matt lacquer ‘Shark’ kitchen (with very fine mitred edge to the worktop) with white composite worktops in an extension to a family terraced house. This kitchen includes a small home study area on the right.

Muncey: Another hand painted ‘Classic’ kitchen with tall ‘pantry’ cabinets and a wine rack plus a lovely large island in Oak.

Fisher: A contemporary take on a traditional framed kitchen - a ‘Classic’ kitchen hand painted in Farrow & Ball ‘Tallow’ with granite worktops. A peninsular provides a breakfast bar and links the kitchen with the dining area.

Rogers: A white matt lacquer ‘Metro’ kitchen with matching box shelves, a stylish white Aga and contrasting black granite worktops.

Gloucestershire Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has a Chelsea Gold Medal and was part of the production team for BBC Gardeners’ World, recently she has been working on a new gardening makeover programme to debut on the BBC in August. Here she shares the joy of one of summer’s most scented shrubs… Known to many as ‘mock orange’ or ‘orange blossom’ due to the blooms’ similarity to citrus blossoms, this exquisite flowering shrub ensures that (to quote Oscar Hammerstein in ‘Carousel’) June really is “busting out all over”! Named after an Egyptian King: Ptolemy II Philadelphus, this plant is everything you look for in a life long garden partner – low maintenance, quick growing, hardy and overflowing with the sweetest of scents. The most widely grown form is probably Philadelphus coronarius: a drought resistant friend for any corner of your garden. Philadelphus coronarius ‘Aureus’ has been awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit for its ability to offer bright gold leaves to add to the beauty of the sparkling white blooms. My favourite on the market has to be Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’: the fragrance is breath taking: the sweetest of sweets on the sweet shop shelf! The flowers, made up of four petals of bright white with dark purple maroon centres with prominent sunshine yellow stamens at the end of woody stems, are a privilege to observe. Its compact size (up to around two metres) also makes this a

68 COTSWOLD STYLE

WITH CAMILLA BASSETT-SMITH good choice for most gardens. More dainty, but equal in scent is the recently introduced Philadelphus ‘Sweet Clare’ which caused much excitement at Chelsea 2010. For pure white double flowers, Philadelphus ‘Virginal’ is an excellent choice. Some refer to philadelphus as syringa, but this is misleading as this is the Latin name for lilac. The two do have some similarities though as both were introduced from Ottoman gardens to European ones at the same time, and also both shrubs have been known as ‘pipe trees’ or ‘blew pipe’ - so called because they were formerly used to make pipe stems. It is often said that it is unlucky to bring the flowers of this shrub indoors, a choice of course up to the individual. My parents chose to decorate the aisles of the church with the blossoms for their June 1970 Charlton Kings wedding… maybe they should have taken heed as the Church burnt down that week! On

the upside though they are still happily married 42 years later! Always traditionally a June flowering shrub, in recent years due to warm spring weather we have seen orange blossom sneak into May as bluebells have with April as we witness a changing of the seasons. However the colder weather of spring 2012 seems to have coerced many plants back to their original show dates, and June promises to be alive with the fragranced feast of mock orange once more. George Washington was an admirer of the beauty of the philadelphus and is said to have ordered some from the famous botanist John Batram in the late 18th Century. (The shrubs are native to North and Central America, in addition to Asia and South-East Europe). These members of the Hydrangeaceae family are happy in any well-drained site in full sun or partial shade. Exposed or sheltered, they are easy to please! Prune after flowering to strong shoots further down the stems to keep your philadelphus happy and add a garden seat nearby to keep you happy as you take in one of the best scents nature has to offer! Cheltenham Fashion Week M

CHELTENHA

EEK FASHION W 17TH-22ND 2012 SEPTEMBER

celebrating fashion With the very first Cheltenham Fashion Week approaching, we speak to Festival Director Sam Bawden to find out what we can expect...

What is the ethos of Cheltenham Fashion Week? Providing the opportunity to engage in and celebrate fashion; Supporting and mentoring talent of all ages; an eclectic exploration of new and existing talent.

What can visitors expect? The most important thing is that each visitor feels valued, included and inspired. All events and workshops are designed to be enjoyed with friends or Fashion Week goers and to come away feeling empowered and motivated by local, regional and national designers and brands. What inspired you to launch Cheltenham Fashion Week? Cheltenham Fashion Week was inspired from an idea that was created by myself and Emma Whitelaw (Chapel Spa) when we were discussing fashion, local events and talent and has grown into the concept that it is today. We wanted to create an event that celebrated the skills, products and services that our community creates. Are you proud of the innovation of designers locally? Yes, I am continually fascinated by the creative ambition and skill in Gloucestershire and this vibrant town. It is vital we support the people who have had the talent and courage to start or run their own business. I personally love working with designers and watching them create ‘their art’; whether JUNE 2012

it is a dress made from silk, crisp packets, or revamping an existing item of clothing.

What can visitors expect each day? The week starts with our student fashion show which has already attracted so much interest we may have to programme an additional show. Children from as young as seven are creating fashions for our catwalk show, along with categories for older students and independent designers. If you want to enter it is not too late! We are also thrilled to be taking over Cowley Manor Hotel for a unique shopping experience where each bedroom will be transformed into a ‘one off ’ designer boutique. Each room will be a themed installation ‘dressed’ by the very best local designers, milliners, and tailors coupled with stylists, make-up artists, and hairdressers. Interactive workshops will run throughout covering seasonal trends, investment pieces, recycling and catwalk shows. Throughout the week there will be additional events to attend including creative workshops for all age groups and a variety of career talks from top professionals in the fashion industry.

The Cheltenham Fashion Week’ strives to educate as well as entertain. What important messages are you also trying to convey? The fashion industry is tough and highly competitive yet for those who are prepared to work really hard, there are many roles and job possibilities. We will

host educational talks and events which provide an insight into the profession as a career and help those interested to identify their skill sets. The industry is now starting to recognise that we do not all subscribe to the idea of being a size zero and that we do all in fact have a uniqueness that just needs to be celebrated.

What sponsors are involved? Cowley Manor, Creative, Mercedes Benz of Cheltenham & Gloucester, Coutts, Cotswold Style, Entourage Events, Chapel Spa, Gloucestershire College, Prism Printing are the first group of businesses to support this pioneering venture. They have been proactive and whilst promoting their successful brands have given time, ideas, skills and encouragement to the development of this project. This exchange and mentoring reinforces the ethos of what Cheltenham Fashion Week is about. CS Tickets will go on sale from Cheltenham Festivals box office on Friday 29th June 2012 and online at www.cheltenhamfestivals.com. BEAUTY ROOM

Hannah Baker from House of Fraser Cheltenham reveals her beauty secrets for fresh, younger looking skin. Photograph Yasmin Hussain. Why is it important to have regular La Prairie facials? La Prairie facials offer you the opportunity to experience our products on your skin and through a facial intensely see the difference in the mirror. Just like diet and exercise, facials visibly improves the feel and look of your skin, of course, along with a good regular skincare regime at home. Apart from the physical changes, facials are also incredibly relaxing, whilst in the comfort of your therapist offering expert skin analysis and diagnosis.

What does a La Prairie facial consist of ? The facials are a hands-on service, entailing a mixture of silken creams and a luxury exfoliator, offering an unprecedented blend of pure pleasure and high performance achieved through important breakthroughs in biotechnology. The facials are tailor-made to suit each client’s individual needs and personal concerns, using specifically selected products. To begin each facial starts with a cleanse and exfoliation followed with La Prairie’s pampering signature eye, face, neck and décolleté massage. An intensive face mask is applied while a hand and arm massage is performed. Each facial finishes with the application of daily skincare products. Why is it important to exfoliate? It is crucial to exfoliate regularly to remove excess dead skin cells, therefore skincare products work even better. A perfect exfoliator is La Prairie’s Cellular JUNE 2012

Microdermabrasion Cream, containing freshwater pearls, quartz crystals and micronized diamonds. It perfects the skin’s surface and reduces imperfections such as flakiness, uneven skin tone and fine lines. It also helps accelerate the circulation near the skin’s surface for a healthy glow; uncovered skin appears translucent with fine lines appearing diminished. It also bathes skin with hydrators and replenishing nutrients.

What are the benefits of massage? Having a facial massage on a regular basis can lead to firmer, more radiant skin by minimising fine lines and wrinkles, moisturising and releasing tension, all of which helps slows down the aging process. What can you use at home when your skin craves special attention? Occasionally, your skin craves ‘intensive care’ at home. The kind that produces immediate results, immediate gratification. Stress, fatigue and excessive exposure to sun, wind, heat and cold all take their toll. Skin starts to look dehydrated, dull and tired. This is where the cellular nutrients of La Prairie can make all the difference. Cellular Hydralift Firming Mask, containing a protein concentrate and plant extracts provides immediate relief to moisture parched skin, significantly improves the appearance of skin’s firmness and elasticity as fine lines and wrinkles are minimised. a month for optimism

charity of the month

In celebration of Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Month in June, we highlight the vital work carried out by the charity to support people with MND and their families...

What is the charity’s ethos? Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rapidly progressive, fatal neurological condition affecting 5,000 people in the UK at any one time. With no effective treatment or cure, five people die every day. Average life expectancy is only 2-5 years, and people with MND lose the use of arms, legs, speech, swallowing and breathing during the course of the disease. The Motor Neurone Disease Association funds and promotes research and provides support for people affected by MND. The Gloucestershire branch began nearly 25 years ago when two MND widows determined to help others with MND access vital equipment. It is still run by volunteers and aims to: • Support people with MND and their families; • Fundraise for people with MND in Gloucestershire and support the national organisation’s mission to care for those with MND and fund research; • Raise awareness. To meet our aims we: • Run a support group for people with MND and their families; • Support MNDA-trained volunteers (Association Visitors) to assist those affected by MND; • Fundraise and assist others in Gloucestershire fundraising for the MNDA; • Run a website and a quarterly newsletter; • Campaign to improve care and support for people with MND and their families.

Challenges for 2012: The challenges facing the branch in 2012 inevitably centre on the difficult economic climate and resulting reductions in health and social care. Demands on our resources are increasing as is the burden of care on families. Consider what living with, or caring for someone with MND entails. With increasing paralysis, the person with MND needs help with every aspect of personal care, difficult transfers from bed to wheelchair, to shower, to toilet etc, JUNE 2012

Branch Founder Betty Leddington and Committee Member Ruth Hellewell.

assistance with eating and drinking, suctioning of saliva they can’t swallow and communication difficulties when speech has gone. Even when settled in bed, painful spasms, inability to turn and breathing problems mean that neither the person affected by MND, nor their partner, ever achieves a good night’s sleep. Having MND usually means being unable to work and similarly for their partner, as caring becomes full time. Aids to help manage the disease are often not freely available and financing even small house adaptations to make life easier and give back some independence, becomes unaffordable. As a small group of enthusiastic volunteers, the branch try to make a positive difference for everyone in Gloucestershire with MND and increase awareness of this under-resourced and under-researched condition. Fundraising, awareness raising, individual support and collaborative working with the health and social service providers in the county do make a real difference to lives blighted by MND and such input is needed more and more. Your latest fundraising efforts: The branch is always delighted to accept fundraising efforts on our behalf. In the last year we have been grateful to marathon runners, challenge event participants, coffee morning hosts, adoption by diverse organisations and events as their chosen charity and we couldn’t manage without them. No matter how large or small the event, every penny really does count.

Our own most recent fundraiser was a ladies charity film night featuring the ever popular Mama Mia. Alongside the film itself, bubbly, popcorn, live entertainment from Stagecoach, wonderful raffle prizes and sponsorship from local businesses produced a fun and successful evening. The next venture for the branch is running the Coffee shop at Tewkesbury Abbey on June 9th. June is MND awareness month with the theme ‘Bake MND History’. Everything we serve will be freshly baked. Come along, eat well and help us fight this devastating disease! It will be followed at 2.30 pm in the Abbey grounds by a mass balloon release, where anyone touched by MND can release their own balloon and attach a personal tribute.

How can people support MNDA? Volunteers are always welcome to join us on an ad hoc or regular basis. Whether you are business looking for a charity to support, an individual with an imaginative fundraising idea, a wish to train with the MNDA to support people in their own homes or join us campaigning to raise awareness and levels of care for MND, we would be delighted to hear from you. Together we can make a real difference!

restoring confidence

health

Sam Rossiter, Director of Imperial Hearing answers the commonly asked questions about tackling hearing problems... Q: How can a hearing aid help transform my life? A hearing loss can be an extremely disabling condition that often makes the sufferer feel excluded, confused or embarrassed as sounds we all take for granted (particularly speech) are misheard, misconstrued or even not heard at all. A hearing system can help replace the confidence that has been taken away by allowing complete communication with the world again and all of the enjoyment that goes with it! Q: How has technology advanced in recent years? Originally a hearing aid was a crude amplifier that simply made sounds louder but not necessarily any clearer. Over the past 10 years, we have discovered so much more about our hearing and how to be more specific about how to ‘aid’ it when a loss becomes apparent. This development has been dramatic to the point where a hearing system will now operate at the same speed we can physically process sound and across such a wide range of frequencies so it is impossible to tell an amplified sound from natural sound. Hearing systems have now developed into wireless technology to connect to televisions, telephones and music systems which are proven to give a better sound to a hearing aid wearer than somebody with normal hearing!

Q: How do digital hearing aids work? A digital hearing aid is an extremely sophisticated processor with algorithms and precise calculations. In essence, a hearing loss is a prescription made up of multiple figures as a comparison to ‘normal’ hearing and a digital hearing aid JUNE 2012

is the means to satisfy the prescription. It does this by a microphone (or microphones) collecting the external sounds and gathering them on its computer (processor). The processor then makes thousands of calculations and adjustments and amplifies each frequency just enough to bring it back to normal hearing whilst allowing for personal sound preferences of the hearing aid wearer to be factored in. Q: What will a consultation at Imperial Hearing consist of ? Essentially, the whole purpose of a consultation is to gather information on the individual. Once we understand somebody’s issues it is easier to be more certain that what is being recommended will work for that person. There are certain tests that we need to do to give us the actual hearing prescription but they are completely non-invasive, pain free and only take about 20 minutes to complete, after which you are able to see the results for yourself and have them explained in an easy to understand way.

Q: Are modern hearing aids discreet to wear? Absolutely! Ever since the introduction of hearing aids there has been a reluctance to wear them due to how they look and in turn, the stigma that goes with that. Manufacturers have poured over this issue and have recently developed hearing aids that are truly invisible as they fit so far into the ear and/or behind the ear with an invisible wire. It is of course dependent on a hearing loss and best advice is always to wear a hearing aid that offers the best sound not the best look, but there are very few patients now that need to wear

an obvious hearing aid with a traditional tube.

Q: How much will a hearing aid cost? The million dollar question! It is notoriously difficult to get a price for hearing aids when calling a hearing company - and to a large part, for good reason. Until you have had a consultation with an audiologist, it is extremely difficult to suggest a particular make or model as they all have very different features and satisfy different requirements. Having said that, expect to pay anywhere between £900 - £3,000 dependent on level of technology, features and what you need the instrument to do. My advice would be don’t be fooled by an initial low price. It is easy to get drawn into the price comparison that is all too available on the internet. These are often faceless organisations that have not assessed your specific requirements and are very keen on the sale of the product. A hearing assessment is very important as your audiologists will be looking for indications of other complications that may be causing the hearing loss, not just looking at the symptoms to assist. Remember, the hearing aid is only a part of the overall process. You will need to have constant visits to your audiologists for check ups, re-tests, problems to be resolved and general advice so it is vital that you are comfortable with your specialist and understand the costs of the aftercare before committing. CS Visit www.aihhp.org for further advice on independent audiology and how you can make the right decisions the first time around.

Laura Leigh celebrates patriotic style with this stunning look inspired by the Queen’s Jubilee...

I vow to thee my country that, in my pride and loyalty, I shall look fierce. A splash of red, a dollop of white and a dash of blue and you’ve nailed it. Wear your patriotic heart on your red/white/blue sleeve with a union jack scarf, shoe or clutch and wear your hair in a style fit for a royal celebration. With the UK in the spotlight this summer and with Laura’s recent success in the Wella Trend Vision 2012 awards we reveal our winning style inspired by the Queen’s Jubilee. PHONE BOX LOOK: Your step by step guide to creating Victory Rolls:

1. Prep the hair with Sebastian Whipped cream and blast dry. 2. Comb a horseshoe section of hair to one side of the crown. Pin in place along one side. 3. Taking the section that you pinned, roll the ends of the hair back on themselves, towards the top of the head and pin in place. Next take the side sections and fix in place with Sebastian Re-shaper hairspray. 4. Spritz the remaining hair with Sebastian Trilliant spray for heat protection, then tong the remaining loose hair. All featured products are available at Laura Leigh Hairdressing.

LAURA LEIGH VICTORY: Congratulations to Laura Leigh on successfully reaching the finals of the Wella Trend Vision awards. Laura spent time researching current trends and interpreting them into her own ideas to create the finished look. Laura created a short, sharp precise hair cut inspired by the 1920s with bold contrasting colours combining femininity with androgyny. With an overwhelming one thousand entrants from across the UK, Laura’s trend interpretation was picked as one of 20 finalists to show her work on stage. Laura will have the opportunity to work alongside the industry’s icons and will be involved in all the future Wella shows and exhibitions.

there is life after redundancy

business

Entrepreneur Carol Rawson from Suit the City and Suit the Country explains how starting a business as a franchisee can change your life and put you in control of your own destiny after redundancy... With the difficult economic situation starting to bite, many people who thought that they were in secure jobs are finding themselves redundant. For some, this is the first time that they have been unemployed since they left full time education and it comes as a great shock to find that they no longer have the routine or income provided by employment. Many spend months or years trying to get back into the corporate world only to discover that they are on the shelf, sometimes this is due to the loss of confidence, frequently it is a lack of transferable skills (particularly if they have only worked for one organisation), sometimes they just are ‘too old’ and ‘invisible’ to the 20 something recruiters, despite having many years of working life ahead of them. So what next? A life on benefits, depression, anxiety over finances? Never! Here is some advice if you are made redundant: 1. Firstly, remember that it’s not your fault; you have done nothing wrong, redundancy happens to many people during a downturn.

2. Stop and take a bit of time to recover – you will be grieving for your lost life and colleagues – remember life may not be the same again – it could be even better!

3. Assess your skills and the gaps in your skills (do you need training to catch up with new technology). Don’t forget your life skills, and collect evidence of those skills, if nothing else it will make you feel more confident and capable. 4. List what you want – know what you JUNE 2012

10. And, finally don’t forget to enjoy the rest of your life!

really want from life – it may not be the same as what you had in your previous life, in fact, it may be radically different. Who said there were no second chances? 5. Explore different opportunities, not just the obvious ones, but ideas that you have a passion about.

6. Enlist support for your ideas; ask your good friends what they think (don’t ask the friend who is likely to be negative until you have made your decision, then get them to help you plan for the pitfalls) . 7. Use free resources, talk to people, go to networking events, look for inspiration wherever you go, this is your opportunity to change your life for the better. 8. Once you have explored the possibilities, investigate further.

9. Make a decision, take a calculated risk – start a business, retrain, go into a new field. If you want to take up photography or painting – just do it!

Once they have taken time out, many redundant workers are keen to explore the possibilities of setting up their own business; maybe they fancy a change of lifestyle; forgetting the commute; maybe they just want to be their own boss and to be in control of their own destiny. The only problem is how do you know what business to set up? There are concerns about risk; children needing financial support, mortgages and bills to pay. This is where buying a franchise can be an interesting and safer option, a tried and tested business, with training and support provided. Others will have made all the mistakes and you can avoid start up costs and start earning again quickly. So, redundancy doesn’t have to be the end of the world. It can be an exciting opportunity, a new beginning! CS Carol Rawson has been coaching business people for 20 years and launched Suit the City in 2007; followed by Suit the Country in 2011, she has recently launched the Suit the City franchise scheme with a passion! She is planning an open day in Cheltenham shortly, if you would like to attend, please email franchise@suitthecity.com to book a place. www.suitthecity.com www.suitthecountry.com

Growing and developing your business is an aspiration and a necessity for many businesses and it’s top of the Government’s agenda to ensure a sustained UK recovery. So much so, that the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg recently announced at a national conference held at the Bristol and Bath Science Park, a further £1 billion additional support for UK businesses as part of the Regional Growth Fund. However, businesses continue to tell us that they face barriers and challenges to growth in this uncertain economic environment. Here, we provide some pointers to help businesses grow. Securing finance “In the current climate, businesses face a variety of financial issues particularly SMEs who risk losing everything if they feel they are not in control of their finances,” says Mike Stutter, a high-growth business coach specialising in finance working with the County Chamber. “I have 33 years experience in the financial sector and as a Business West Finance Coach I work with managers and entrepreneurs to explain how our ‘Understanding Finance for Business’ programme can help them. The programme covers a wide range of financial issues and it’s my job to help businesses find their way through the financial maze. Through one-to-one coaching we explore the different funding options including debt solutions and potential equity available and I help them prepare funding proposals. I can also help businesses find alternative sources of finance and provide practical support for negotiation meetings with banks and other lenders.” Export development Exporting is a great way to accelerate the growth of your business and it can help to maintain a leading edge in an increasingly competitive environment. Andrew Fraser, international trade adviser, says: “I act as your guide to help develop your international business strategy and give you JUNE 2012

the confidence to explore or expand in overseas markets.” As well as his own experience, Andrew can draw on a network of over 2,400 staff across 96 key global markets and open doors overseas to help identify export opportunities and reach customers/business partners otherwise not accessible,

Driving sales through marketing Marketing is one of the most important aspects of growing your business, and is an investment that will pay for itself over and over again, yet it is often misunderstood, or neglected due to a lack of time, resources or knowledge of its potential. “Marketing is also often confused with selling or advertising,” says Dev Chakraborty, highgrowth business coach specialising in marketing. “But it encompasses much more, including market research, company culture, reputation, price points, distribution, new business, product development, advertising and promotion. Right now customers are becoming increasingly demanding and your competitors more savvy. The way you market your company’s brand, products and services can mean the difference between you or your competitor getting the sale. I can help you develop a tailored marketing strategy capable of delivering market awareness, sales leads and loyalty.”

Developing business opportunities Gloucestershire Chamber is part of Business West which represents more than 6,000 businesses across Bristol, Bath, and Gloucestershire through its Chambers of Commerce network. This huge local business community can be tapped into via a number of routes, allowing you to make new business contacts and develop business opportunities. Suzanne HallGibbins Chief Executive Gloucestershire Chamber says: “Through our three Chambers of Commerce there’s lots of ways you can, share knowledge, learn, network and identify new local suppliers and partnerships. Our aim is to continue to generate a community of members with energy, enthusiasm, ideas and know-how. So, if you’re not already part of one the largest membership organisation in the region and you want to grow, connect and have your voice heard by government, why not join us?” CS GET CONNECTED: Please contact Suzanne Hall-Gibbins, Gloucestershire Chamber of Commerce,183 Westgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 2RN. Independent Financial Adviser Brian Morman explains how auto-enrolment will affect companies and their staff.

Later this year, the Government is introducing legislation that will precipitate what promises to be the biggest shake-up in workplace pensions yet. It will also be one of the biggest challenges most companies will have to face in terms of providing benefits for their staff. From October 2012, the new law, universally referred to as auto-enrolment, will require all employers to enrol (eligible) staff into a qualifying workplace pension scheme if they are not already in one – and pay compulsory contributions into it! That’s a big deal, because at present, the Government estimates about 7 million people are not saving at all for retirement, or are not saving enough. Couple that with the fact that we’re all living longer and will need a lot more money to live on in retirement and we have a potentially very worrying situation brewing. The state pension is hardly likely to be a panacea as its value continually erodes. Auto-enrolment is intended to provide a solution for these problems. The legislation programme consists of two distinct threads – auto-enrolment and compulsory contributions, and the introduction of a new, low cost, Government-backed pension scheme, the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST), which could provide a solution for employers to meet their obligations. Both will take effect from 1st October, but there are staged implementation dates, largely dependent on the number of staff on payroll, with the larger employers ‘going first,’ as it were. So what constitutes an auto-enrolment ‘qualifying scheme?’ Well, essentially it must pay enough contributions to meet the minimum levels set by the Government and offer a default fund into which the contributions are automatically invested. It should also have the administrative infrastructure in place to enable auto-enrolment of all eligible

employees. Eligible employees are those aged between 22 and state pension age, earning more than the ‘minimum threshold.’ (£8,105 in the 2012/13 tax year.) Now, here’s the rub. Employees can choose to opt out if they don’t mind giving up their employer’s contribution! That’s right. There is no compulsion on anyone to remain in the scheme. I call this odd contradiction ‘voluntary compulsion.’ Employees are about to be compelled to save for a pension – but only if they want to! With money tight at the moment, I guess quite a few workers, especially the younger element, may elect to exercise this option, which could conceivably stall the Government’s vision of creating a new era in pensions saving. Those employers who have yet to address the auto-enrolment issue will have to move fast. The Pensions Trust (www.tptae.org.uk) estimate some firms will need more than a year to get ready! Companies need to check their staging dates, assess the financial impact (which could be considerable) and decide which type of scheme to adopt. Pension schemes already in place will have to be checked to ensure they meet the minimum standards for auto-enrolment. The whole procedure is very complex and I would advise employers to seek independent financial advice as soon as possible. At Brunsdon, we are arranging a number of auto-enrolment seminars in the coming months to help companies prepare. We have also produced a free guide to auto-enrolment and NEST which is available on request. We’re here to help. Don’t leave it too late. ‘THE GENERAL PUBLIC SEEMS TO BELIEVE IT WILL REDUCE THEIR OVERALL LIABILITY TO PAY CARE FEES. THIS SEEMS UNLIKELY’

WITH PHILLIPA BRUCE-KERR For further information, please contact Phillipa Bruce-Kerr, Private Client Partner at Rickerbys LLP Solicitors, on 01242 246430 or email Phillipa on Phillipa.BruceKerr@Rickerbys.com. JUNE 2012

Social Care Funding Phillipa Bruce-Kerr from Rickerbys discusses the ‘elephant in the room’ that is Social Care Funding... The statement issued by the Local Government Association (LGA) on 27 April puts further pressure on the Government to publish its White Paper on Social Care Funding. The White Paper was supposed to have been published in December last year but there is still no firm date for publication. The Care Services Minister, Paul Burstow, promises imminent action. Social Care Funding has been an ‘elephant in the room’ for some time, as the trend for people to live longer has been no secret. As the population profile changes, it is clear that a smaller percentage of the working population will not be able to continue to support the increasing percentage of the population who are living longer in the way that support is offered now. The austerity measures being forced on the health service and local authorities is magnifying the effect, with the result that the LGA states that local authorities are faced with a choice of cutting library and parks services and public toilets or the level and quality of care services provided to older and vulnerable people in their communities. As they already face criticism that those services are patchy and inadequate, and they have legal obligations to deliver certain care services, things do not look so good for libraries and parks. The proposed Care Funding legislation arises from the Dilnot Commission Report which (among other things)

recommends a cap on the capital contributions people will have to make towards care fees. The recommendation is for a figure between £25,000 and £50,000 and there is wide acceptance that cap will probably be set at £35,000. The report also recommends that no contribution should be made towards care fees when the value of capital assets drops below £100,000. The LGA are anxious to see the recommended structures introduced as they believe they will deliver an additional income stream. It is believed the Government are seeking to establish cross party support for the White Paper before proceeding. The general public seems to believe it will reduce their overall liability to pay care fees. This seems unlikely. The Dilnot Commission distinguished between social care fees, health care fees and hotel costs (food, heat, lighting etc), and any assessed contributions and limits will apply to social care fees. It also seems to be gaining acceptance that the contributions towards social care fees will only be counted towards the cap when the care needs have been assessed at severe or critical. CS For assistance on matters relating to old and vulnerable people, care fees and financial assistance, please contact Phillipa Bruce- Kerr, Private Client Partner at Rickerbys LLP on 01242 246430 or email Phillipa.Brucekerr@rickerbys.com

innovative solutions We talked to Aynsley Damery, Partner at Tayabali-Tomlin Chartered Accountants, to find out a bit more about the company and why they are different. Q: What do you do? Tayabali-Tomlin is a leading firm of chartered accountants, tax specialists and business advisers with offices in Cheltenham, Moreton-in-Marsh and London. Founded over 30 years ago we provide a comprehensive portfolio of services designed to specifically support our clients with business advisory, tax planning and accountancy services. Q: How do you differ from other accountancy firms? Many business owners have a misconceived notion of what an accountant is or does. With TayabaliTomlin you can forget the stereotype! We start where other firms finish, helping shape your future, not tidying up history. We do not see the preparation of accounts and tax returns as our primary objective. They are a statutory requirement, a necessary evil, and provide our clients with no added value. JUNE 2012

All of us at Tayabali-Tomlin are passionate about what we do. We understand business. We ‘get’ it. We want to use our experience and expertise to help our clients create more profit, more jobs, and always with an eye on the end game: more wealth. Our focus is on finding innovative solutions to drive our clients’ businesses from strength to strength. Q: Why would a client choose Tayabali-Tomlin? By choosing to work with us our clients experience top quality, large firm services with all the added benefits that a local firm can offer, getting business advice and support which is imaginative and effective, and ideas which have a spark of ingenuity to lift their business beyond the norm and deliver better results time after time. Of course we crunch numbers like most accountants, but that’s not what inspires us. We are

not just bean-counters, but a team of financial professionals with the commercial intelligence to help our clients and their families build better businesses and create more wealth.

What’s the next step? If you’re feeling unloved, have received a surprise tax bill, an unexpected fee or just not getting all that you should from your existing relationship, it costs you nothing to get a second opinion. Why not drop in for a cup of coffee and a relaxed chat, or just call us absolutely no obligation! CS

business

an instant response

Conducting business in a fast-paced world requires keeping on top of your communication with customers. Here, Roger White Managing Director of SSL discusses remote email access and technology that will keep businesses ahead of the game...

‘IF YOU DON’T HAVE A RAPID RESPONSE TO EMAILS THEN YOUR SERVICE IS PERCEIVED AS NOT BEING AS EFFICIENT’

WITH ROGER WHITE Severnside Software Ltd, The White House, No. 3 Wheatstone Court, Waterwells Business Park, Quedgeley, Gloucester, GL2 2AQ. tel: 01452 720250. www.ssl-uk.net

JUNE 2012

With today’s fast paced world and more businesses operating on an international level, email communication has become more important than ever. Roger White from SSL emphasises that ‘email on the go’ is the life blood of today’s modern business. “We know that customers expect an instant reply, or at least a same day response, to business emails so expectations for communication have increased considerably. If you don’t have a rapid response to emails then your service is perceived as not being as efficient. “With today’s mobile devices email is readily available so it is very inexpensive to achieve email on the go,” says Roger. Outsourcing your IT requirements can be beneficial for small businesses and will provide you with professional support, secure backup facilities and expert advice to suit your individual circumstances. SSL have been providing IT solutions to businesses for over 20 years and provide support to over 40 customers across four time zones. “A professional IT provider can offer all the support you need to ensure that your server is regularly maintained and your information is backed up. They will also be up to date with the latest technologies and advise businesses on the best software currently available on the market.” Roger reveals that Cloud-based email services are the future and can be a very cost effective way of managing your

communications. Cloud computing involves running your programs on a remote server and all information is stored in a central pace lending itself to better collaboration between staff members. Documents are automatically updated whenever a user modifies them and data no longer has to be backed up routinely. “Cloud-based email is the future and you won’t need to worry about antispam or anti-virus programmes which is another huge advantage. Some people may worry about security if information is stored remotely but it is often passwords that let down security. Many people choose passwords that are related to family, house names or pets, which are easy to identify. It is important to add letters and numbers to your chosen password to increase its strength.” Despite the many advantages of instant email communication, Roger emphasises that instant replies can sometimes get people in hot water. “It is very important to always send structured replies to emails. Your company can appear unprofessional if you don’t give your response a lot of thought. If you reply late at night or after a drink you may send something you might regret! “Also, with such advances to email there is a temptation to be checking your mobile device constantly which can leave partners and friends frustrated. “Use your email responsibly and it can be a very effective tool and enhance your company’s reputation.” CS

‘it’s totally fascinating’

women in business

Eve Holmes talks to Norma Tang, Head of Legal and Company Secretary at Renishaw, a pioneering engineering company which has seen huge expansion in the last 18 months and is listed in the top 350 companies on the London Stock Exchange.

Norma Tang is a woman of many talents. A qualified solicitor, Norma has over 20 years’ experience acting for clients and inhouse legal teams and is currently at Renishaw, one of Gloucestershire’s top performing companies, in the key role of Head of Legal and Company Secretary. Norma started her career in commercial law in the exciting period of the late 80s which saw many interesting legal challenges for business. In the nineties she decided to make the move in-house and worked with the legal team at the Nationwide Building Society at a time when there were huge changes in the industry. “In the eighties building societies were buying up businesses to expand their services to customers, but by the nineties they had decided that some of those purchases had been a mistake. I led the legal team that sold off Nationwide’s network of estate agents for £1, which at the time hit the headlines,” says Norma. When Norma came across Renishaw in 2001, she already had a growing family and was drawn to the pioneering company and its location in Wotton-under-Edge, which was close to home and helped her juggle a family life with a demanding work role. “My appointment at Renishaw was the first in-house legal role for the company so it was an exciting challenge and joining an engineering company was a huge learning curve, coming to grips with the technical aspects of the products.” Renishaw designs, manufactures and sells innovative products that are used in a variety of applications as diverse as measuring and inspection systems used in manufacturing, machine position sensing JUNE 2012

and calibration systems, CAD/CAM dentistry, neurosurgery and medical diagnostics. The company has a global presence with more than 50 offices in 32 countries and 95 per cent of sales are made overseas. Since Norma joined the company, Renishaw has gone from an offering of six product lines to 13 and has more than doubled its turnover from £125 million in 2001 to £288 million in 2011, seeing much of its expansion over the last 18 months. “Our newest venture into the healthcare sector has brought with it completely new challenges, working under stringent regulations and the intricacies of bringing a new product to market. It is a totally fascinating company and building up my team has been a joy. I really love the mentoring aspect of my role.” Norma’s passion for mentoring and nurturing her team extends also to encouraging school students and young lawyers to gain valuable work experience. “It is so important for young lawyers to make contacts in the industry and to be proactive about networking. Work placements are invaluable so I would encourage anyone to get as much experience in the workplace as possible.” Norma’s achievements throughout her career are further enhanced by her muscial talent. Singing since she was a child, Norma is a member of the Jubilate Chamber Choir, one of

Gloucestershire’s leading chamber choirs, and she admits that had she not gone into law then music would have been her chosen career. “I was all set to do a music degree and to pursue a musical career until a teacher mentioned law and I decided that it would be a more stable career choice.” Jubilate Chamber Choir has travelled the UK and Europe performing a diverse range of music with guest soloists and chamber orchestras. One of the choir’s highlights was last year performing at Highnam Court for the BBC One Show. This year the choir will be performing a Midsummer Serenade at St Mary’s Church, Charlton Kings on June 16th to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. “I absolutely love performing and the teamwork involved in singing in a small group.” Looking ahead to the rest of 2012, Norma is helping to manage the rapid growth the company has experienced in the last 18 months. “In addition to our established businesses we have several new product lines that need to be supported across the world so our focus for 2012 is managing the company’s growth. It is an exciting time and I am proud to be part of such an innovative company right in the heart of Gloucestershire. There is never a dull moment.” CS

in a blink…

interview

Eric Barton meets up with Coutts Private Banker, Charlie Ellison. Last month saw Coutts’ Cheltenham office sponsor a sculpture competition for post graduates from the Royal College of Art, which has gone on to be displayed at Cowley Manor’s 55 acre grade II listed gardens. The sculptures will be on display until 30th September, before they will go on to be auctioned with proceeds going back to the graduates. Charlie Ellison, Private Banker for Coutts in Cheltenham commented, ‘Coutts has a long-standing history of championing the creative industries, and have looked after many clients from within the art and design world for many decades. Today we recognise and support British design excellent in order to aid growth and foster future British talent. This partnership with Cowley and the RCA is further evidence of that’. You can trace Coutts Bank right back to 1692, when an erstwhile canny Scot by the name of John Campbell set up shop as a Goldsmith Banker on the southern side of the Strand in London. By way of history that dates Coutts as far back as the massacre at Culloden and places its conception even before the ‘union’ was created between England and Scotland. In what seems a blink, Coutts has now become one of the Worlds foremost institutions for private banking, wealth management and good sturdy, solid investment advice. As global economics become more uncertain and the onslaught of the Euro zone impacts on almost everything we do here in the UK, information and being informed is crucial in planning for the future. And key to this planning is the close relationship that the Coutts Private Bankers have with their clients. Charlie Ellison is a prime example of how hard work, dedication and actually caring about clients can make a difference. I’m guided into the inner sanctum of the beautiful regency offices of Coutts in Cheltenham and JUNE 2012

immediately feel scruffy. Wish I’d worn a tie. It transpires that Charlie Ellison is one of only two female private bankers at Coutts, Cheltenham. She left school after her A levels to join The Halifax in 1992. After a steadfast period there as a Mortgage Advisor, Financial Consultant and Private Banking Manager she joined Coutts when they opened their Cheltenham office in 2008. She now deals with 150 private and investment banking clients. Charlie comments, ‘the best part of my job is meeting and advising my clients. I have a great one to-one relationship with all of them, as it’s paramount to understand their needs and provide them with the best guidance possible’. Charlie Ellison’s client portfolio at Coutts has a large sprinkling of entrepreneurs who by definition are forward thinkers and good planners. Charlie further comments, ’2008 saw a lot of pressure in the markets and it’s been challenging to say the least. My aim is to be proactive and keep our clients well informed of the global financial situations and markets at all times. During the banking crisis we ensured that all our clients had the best possible up to date information. It’s what we do’.

Information technology these days is at the ‘coal face’ of the banking industry and Coutts have taken a leading edge enabling them to embrace all the wizardry that’s available. A bank that was formed in 1692 now has a Twitter account. Brilliant. Coutts also make a point of informing and embracing the younger generation, holding small dedicated seminars in London for the 16-25 year old bracket of burgeoning entrepreneurs. It’s apparent that banking is at the very soul of Charlie Ellison. Cut her in half and you’ll probably find facts and figures coursing through her veins. Glaringly transparent is her keenness and passion in inspiring young women in business. As soon as Charlie Ellison joined Coutts one of her first moves was to form the Cheltenham Coutts Women’s Network, which now has over 30 members meeting up to promote women in business on a bi-monthly basis. Alongside her banking duties Charlie also finds time to be involved in ‘Maggies’, the walk-in day care cancer centre in Cheltenham and The National Star College. It’s the face of Coutts in the community making a contribution, rolling up their sleeves and getting involved. Good for them. As a true born and bred ‘Cheltonian’, Charlie Ellison is quite rightly proud of her home town. ‘Where else’, she says ‘has everything that we have to offer right here in Cheltenham? There are all the festivals, the theatre, the shops and restaurants and our beautiful Cotswolds’. Her weekends are spent with her 13 year old daughter and husband and given the choice of hobbies or pastimes she simply says. ‘shopping’. Charlie Ellison blinks a smile as she sees me off the premises. Wish I’d worn a tie. CS For more information on Coutts charlie.ellison@coutts.com Tel: 01242 649774. www.coutts.com

Montpellier is headed up by Simon Whitney who is one of the most respected financial advisors locally. He has well established links with both local accountants and solicitors and has been helping clients to manage their wealth for over 20 years. Montpellier are a fee based firm so there is no commission bias in any of the recommendations that they make for their clients. In the current climate this is very refreshing as sophisticated investors know that it is advice and not products that solve their financial aims and objectives.

Q. What makes Montpellier different? Montpellier are not restricted in the choice of investments or products in the way that banks and many wealth managers are. This means that we can act in our clients’ best interests knowing that we have full access to the market. We also understand the importance of face to face advice and our client relationships are hugely important to us. We also accept that our clients like to check their investments online regularly. We have therefore fused the very best technology with our understanding of personal relationships. Care and responsibility are at the core of our organisation and as such we have enjoyed sustained growth as well as ongoing customer loyalty. Q. What would you do to help clients at the start of the tax year? I like to look at a client’s position and to see what is best for them, traditionally ISA investments and using Capital Gains Tax allowances are the first port of call, but I also assess whether clients could reduce how much income tax they are paying, and also to see if assets could be passed between husband and wife where

there is a disparity in income. If the husband is earning £150,000 and his wife £10,000 each year, then some of the investments held by the husband could be passed to his wife to avoid paying higher rates of tax on the dividends, this is the same with cash holdings paying interest. I look at highly complicated and technical areas with my advisory team, but I also like to try and focus on the basics as well, as often this is where people should start with their planning. These often do not cost the client anything and is simply good financial advice.

Q. What mistakes do you often see clients make? Unfortunately I have seen on numerous occasions clients try to plan their affairs themselves without taking specialist advice. The common mistake is when clients transfer the legal title in their home to their children, but continue to live in the property, or if they transfer ownership of a buy to let flat to their children, but the parents hold on to the income. These cases present significant issues not least in relation to Inheritance Tax and possibly Capital Gains Tax. We often help clients to rectify these issues, but prefer to correctly structure the transfer to make them as tax efficient as possible.

What is your area of focus for clients? My experience is in helping clients to invest their funds and really make sure that the investments fit with the level of risk that they are happy to take. I also look to minimise the amount of taxes that my clients pay whether this is Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax or Income Tax, using a range of different approaches. CS

SINGAPORE SLING

Presents the cocktail of the month...

An international classic, this refreshing concoction was created in 1915 at The Raffles Hotel in Singapore by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon and the hotel’s original hand scribbled recipe remains on display today at the Raffles Hotel Museum.

Due to its immense popularity throughout the pacific, many different variations of the drink now exist. Most recipes substitute bottled pineapple juice for fresh however our ‘tried and tested’ recipe uses fresh everything and soda water is added last to provide the foamy finish.

Singaore Sling in the mix: 50ml Bombay Sapphire Gin 20ml Cherry brandy 10ml Benedictine 10ml Cointreau 50ml fresh pineapple juice 20ml fresh lime juice 2 dashes of pomegranate grenadine 1 dash Angostura Bitters Soda Water

Method: • Combine all the ingredients except soda water into a cocktail shaker. • Add fresh ice and shake hard vigorously until outside of tin becomes frosted.

• Fine strain the contents into your glass with a couple of ice cubes. • Top up with soda and stir gently.

Garnish: Pineapple Slice and Leaf, Maraschino Cherry Glass: Sling, Highball or Collins

• Garnish with the maraschino cherry, pineapple slice and leaf.

• Relax in the summer sunshine and enjoy!

‘a Foodie’s American Dream’

review

Shelle Duffin enjoys the vibrant atmosphere and first class service at The Tavern in Cheltenham... I love eating, who doesn’t? Apart from satiating my appetite with delicious food, I relish the social enjoyment of dining, whether it’s a dinner party at home or in a restaurant with friends. For a foodie, there is nothing more exciting than discovering a new culinary haven. One of my favourite haunts is The Wheatsheaf in Northleach - its seasonal, locally sourced menu is affordable to all, and when washed down with locally brewed ales in warm atmospheric surroundings, it’s everything you need from ‘the local’. Naturally then, upon discovering that its newly refurbished sister pub, The Tavern, was re-opening in Cheltenham, I was simply bursting with excitement to get through that door. Having eaten at many of Cheltenham’s restaurants, I was beginning to crave something different with The Tavern; this is exactly what I got. My merry party were escorted to our table, situated opposite the open-plan kitchen; I couldn’t have asked for a better position. As somewhat of a ‘nosey parker’, I love observing chefs at work preparing various dishes – it’s a brilliant way of creating inspiration. It’s also a brave task to undertake, as on a busy night with all eyes upon you, anything could go wrong. However, I have never seen chefs in a restaurant kitchen having so much fun whilst cooking –each was at ease yet passionate, made more evident in their finished dishes - for me and Head Chef, Julian Habbot, that is how cooking should be. Once seated, we were offered an appetiser of spiced popcorn to arouse our taste-buds as we studied the menu whilst sipping a fragrant Le Fume Blanc from the Loire Valley. The bottle was chilled in an old milk can, introducing JUNE 2012

another quirky element that emphasised their unique attention to detail. Inspired by London’s Spuntino and New York’s The Spotted Pig, The Tavern menu boasts something distinctive and exciting. A Modern American theme with worldwide influences, one half presents the daily specials and the other, bites, salads, sliders (mini burgers), big plates, slides and puddings - consisting of mouth-watering, seasonal combinations. What I particularly loved was the opportunity to share dishes and sample a variety of meals, thus avoiding the threat of food envy! I ordered pan-fried scallops with asparagus and pancetta, something I’ve craved since asparagus recently came

into season. This was followed by chicken sumac (popcorn chicken coated in a Middle Eastern spiced batter) served with a fragrant aioli. It all looked as good as it tasted – one dish modelling rustic chic and the other a simple, classic masterpiece of colour – both of which quelled my appetite whilst simultaneously leaving my taste-buds asking for more. As a lover of calamari, my eyes lit up when I discovered it on the menu, but in true Tavern style, they’ve added an Asian-infused twist. Served with garlic and rosemary fries, this is my idea of heaven and every mouthful was just that. Followed by two of life’s guilty pleasures - croissant bread and butter pudding and freshly made doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce - it would be fair to say I was content until the end! The service was faultless, and it’s rare that I say this! The waitresses demonstrated good knowledge and enthusiasm for the menu, confidently answering any questions with a friendly, bubbly approach reflected in the atmosphere amongst the diners. Verdict: Excellent food with a twist: first-class service, vibrant atmosphere, and a quirky degree of patriotism coming from the toilets with Winston Churchill’s wartime speeches blasting out - I could have happily eaten pudding in there! An absolute must visit. CS To make a reservation, call 01242 221212; www.thetaverncheltenham.com; Facebook – The Tavern Cheltenham; Twitter - @tavernchelt

Style readers which includes admission and parking for all three days together with entry for a family four (children admits two adults and two children between the ages of 12-18 years). How to enter: All you have to do is answer this simple question. Q: Who is the Director of the Festival of British Eventing, Gatcombe Park? Please email your answer with your full name and phone number to editor@stylemagazines.co.uk by July 1st 2012.

138 COTSWOLD STYLE

We get personal with Tim Henson, Director of the Festival of British Eventing and ask him to describe the highlights of this year’s Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park in July. Photograph Kit Houghton Q: What experience can visitors expect at this year’s Festival of British Eventing? The Festival of British Eventing (13-15 July 2012), presented by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), is being held two weeks earlier this year, due to the Festival’s traditional date clashing with the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Festival offers excellence in equestrianism as well as a fantastic family day out in the beautiful rolling hills of the Cotswold countryside. The Festival plays host to some top class competition with national and international riders and horses vying to win one of three championship classes, The Dodson & Horrell British Eventing Novice Championship, The Smith & Williamson British Eventing Intermediate Championship and The British Eventing Open Championship presented by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), in addition the best place British rider in the Open Championship becomes National Champion. There will be fantastic shopping with a huge variety of stands in our retail village with art, sculpture, furniture, and clothing and of course everything needed for the horse and rider as well as a host of other attractions for everyone to enjoy. Q: What challenges will riders face in each of the three levels of Eventing? The Festival of British Eventing is unique in that it incorporates the British Championships at three levels of Eventing - the Novice, Intermediate and Open Championships. The much-coveted British Eventing Open Championship has an impressive roll of

honour. New Zealand’s Andrew Nicholson took the top two spots last year with Nereo and Avebury. Other past winners include British team stalwarts Mary King, William Fox-Pitt and Pippa Funnell, Badminton winner Mark Todd and Blyth Tait. A One Day Event is just that - it means that each horse and rider combination must complete the three phases of the event in one day Dressage, Show Jumping & Cross Country - although, due to the number of competitors here some competitors will do their dressage one day and the Show Jumping & Cross Country the next. Q: Which riders should we be looking out for in particular this year? We expect some of the very best riders in the world to be competing at The Festival with a truly international flavour as well as many ‘grass roots’ riders who will be aiming to make their name in the sport of eventing. We are confident that many of our potential London 2012 Olympic competitors will be bringing horses – William Fox-Pitt, Mary King, Piggy French to name a few as well as Pippa Funnell, Kristina Cook and many others. Of course, the international riders will be out in force – Andrew Nicholson, Jonathon Paget, Mark Todd to name a few but until the entries close we cannot finally confirm the excellent list of competitors expected to attend. Q: Are there any exciting additions to this year’s event? As this is the last major event prior to London 2012 we will be giving our own JUNE 2012

Equestrian Team GBR Eventing squad a great send off as the riders parade in the main arena on Sunday the last chance we will have to see them all together prior to them heading off to Greenwich Park in their bid for Gold.

Q: In addition to top class eventing, what other attractions are there for visitors and entertainment for the whole family? The shopping – there is a marvellous array of shopping for everyone to enjoy and you can find the latest fashion trends, the very best culinary delights as well as a host of other ‘nick nacks’ and equestrian goodies for all the family to enjoy. The family can enjoy a variety of food at The Festival ranging from wood fired pizza, Mexican, steaks and pies to all sorts of delicacies and the wonderful terrain and ‘Park Bowl’ area at Gatcombe Park provides the ideal picnic area for all the family who can watch the highlights JUNE 2012

of the cross-country course in this superb setting. In addition you can have a go at the Dog Agility and the chance for anyone to enter their best canine friend in the Scruffts cross-breed competition. Classes for Most Handsome, Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch, Child’s Best Friend and Golden Oldie so an experience for everyone to enjoy. New to The Festival this year is a Young Rider Combined Training Trial. The dressage phase will be held on the Saturday afternoon and will be followed by the jumping element, which will take place on Saturday evening and also Scurry Driving – a qualifying competition – which demonstrates the skill and agility of pony driving. Q: As Festival Director what are your challenges in the build up to this year’s event? This year, as the sport moves forward to London 2012, I think the challenge will be the unforeseen impact of an event so close to the Olympics. With such a huge interest in the sport generally added with London 2012 fever I am not sure what to expect - we anticipate it being a bumper year for the Festival as people congregate to celebrate equestrian sport and wish our teams the best of luck. Q: What are your highlights of the event every year? For me, The Festival is all about the best of the best coming together to celebrate our great spot of Eventing – our leading riders and horses, the three National Championships, all together in one amazing location held over one weekend – it doesn’t get any better than that. Olympic legacy

Page 143

Former Cheltenham Town football star Shane Duff turned football coach hopes that the country’s Olympic year will leave a lasting legacy for encouraging people to get involved in sport...

‘THE GOVERNMENT ARE SPENDING MILLIONS ON INITIATIVES TO GET PEOPLE INTO SPORT AND ACTIVITY WITH AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE AN OLYMPIC LEGACY’

JUNE 2012

Obesity is crippling the nation, but why does nobody seem to care? Crime is down, but parks are empty. The cost of dealing with obesity to the NHS has risen steeply in the last 14 years: - 1998 - £470m to deal with consequences related to Coronary Heart disease and Type II diabetes; - 2002 - total costs of £1 billion; - 2007 - total costs of £4.2 billion; - Estimated costs by 2015 is £6.3 billion (Health story, 2009). The UK has the third highest level of obesity behind only the USA and Mexico (Health Story, 2009). The Department of Health stated in 2011 that 60 per cent of adults and one third of 10-11 year olds are overweight or obese. These statistics are worrying and look set to become even worse. Big efforts need to be made by parents, guardians, coaches and school teachers to encourage youngsters to start taking part in physical activity and to sustain it. We live in an age of convenience where time saving devices are firmly integrated into everyday life. The development in the transport industry makes tasks such as walking and cycling more dangerous. Home entertainment is keeping people inactive for long periods. The likelihood of obesity increases two per cent for every hour of TV watched (Health Story, 2009). The fear factor of crime is possibly an issue. The fear of letting our children outside and being a victim. But should this be the case? The Home Office released figures in 2009 that show crime rates have been vastly reduced since the early 1990s. So why are we so scared? The blame lies with the media. The media outlets now are so advanced that we hear of more incidents involving crime. We can’t turn around without hearing bad news. So why don’t we exercise? Not enough

time, it’s boring, too tired, it’s too hot, too cold, it’s raining, too expensive. Just a few excuses we have all used in our time to avoid doing exercise; 37 per cent of people who die from Cardiovascular Disease each year is caused due to inactivity (British Heart Foundation, 2009). I believe this can be prevented. The current age of spectatorism doesn’t help matters either. People have so much joy watching a sport these days that playing isn’t the be all end all. I have been involved in many conversations like this one: “What’s your favourite sport?” “Football.” “So do you play?” “No but I love watching.” It’s a common theme that needs to change in order to benefit the nation’s health and save millions of pounds of the tax payer’s money. In Japan companies are fined if their staff exceed a specific waistline guide. This way companies are forced to put on activity sessions in work time to promote a healthy lifestyle. The workers have to buy into the regime or they may find themselves out of a job. No surprises that Japan is the second lowest in the obesity table. The Olympics being held in our country this summer is an ideal time to change that way of life. The inspiration is there being beamed through to us via every available media outlet. The Government are spending millions on initiatives to get people into sport and activity with an attempt to create an Olympic legacy. Why not be a part of this legacy and do your bit to make yourself healthier, fitter and less of a drain on public service money in years to come. CS Follow Shane on Twitter @duffo16

girls shoot too…

Clay Pigeon Shooting is social, competitive and fun and more women are taking up this exciting sport. Cotswold Style’s Sarah Prankerd went along to Ian Coley Shooting School to test her skills... I only had a go at clay shooting many years ago, so I can’t remember much about it, although it was in a field at a show and I do remember getting a kick on the gun. So I find myself at the Ian Coley Shooting School to give it another go – and all I can say is ‘amazing!’. The day I arrived was a very special moment for the school; the evening before Ian Coley Shooting school was named Best Shooting Ground 2012 in the prestigious Shooting Industry Awards. I was met by my instructor Shaun Porter and by Phil Coley, son of Ian, both who have vast experience in the shooting arena. Shaun is a top clay shot and Phil is a leading sports psychologist in shooting sports, lucky the psychological assessment of me will wait for another day. Shaun took me through a safety talk, looked at the fitting of the gun and also my vision. The thing that impressed me at this stage was how long Shaun took to make sure I had the right gun for me, and also the selection of a 20 gauge gun. The 20b Beretta was selected for me as it was light and would not kick me, not just because of the gun, but the cartridges used are a low recoil spec – so my JUNE 2012

memories of being kicked were soon to be dispelled. The ground itself is set in rolling countryside, the walkways to the stands are all gravelled and many of the stands are undercover. I was dressed as I would be for the office, so I did not need to have any special clothing or worry about getting mud on my shoes. I was not surprised to learn that the school had just won the Best Shooting Ground Award. So Shaun took me to three different stands for my Have-a-Go lesson, where we shot varying targets. I started on the crow which was a target coming towards me and finished on a rabbit target, which rolled along the floor in front of me. I loved every minute of it, the thrill of hitting the target is amazing and such fun. In fact more and more ladies are taking the sport of clay shooting up as a leisure pastime, something that Ian Coley was keen to promote. My overall view of the lesson was amazing. I dispelled any fear of a kick, I hit many more targets than I thought I would and the manner in which I was coached was a relaxed and patient approach.

After the lesson I spent time in the club house and even looked around the gunshop, which stocks over 700 shotguns and rifles. I was taken in by how beautiful the shotguns are with delicate engraving and stunning woods. I then actually booked another lesson and am looking forward to shooting with other ladies on an upcoming Ian Coley Ladies Day. Would I recommend clay shooting? Absolutely! CS

OLD SCHOOL

Ring out the old, bring in the new. Works sometimes, but not always. Intrinsic to any sales or service operation are the levels of care and attention they provide. Just think of the last bad experience you had at a car dealership; either making a purchase or getting your existing vehicle serviced. It can be like being giving a new toy, it then breaks and no one will fix it. Now that’s ‘new school’ and to be avoided at all costs. At Three Counties Subaru just outside Tewkesbury it’s definitely old school. And why? Well, the driving force and owner of the business is totally customer focused, as is his 14 staff on site. Jason Jones has been in the car trade for over 24 years and you can tell he’s a thoroughbred by the way his face lights up when you mention cars… and particularly Subaru cars. Jason has spent over four years selling and servicing Subaru cars and it’s been a journey that’s seen growth upon growth to take the company to an annual turnover of £9million. That’s a lot of cars and servicing for one dealership. Jason Jones comments: “in total we sold over 1,000 cars last year which was incredible considering that when we started here over eight years ago we sold only 100 cars in that year.” An active ingredient to that success is the way Jason and his 14 staff treat their customers. I was in reception and it was like a ‘Subaru social gathering’. No long-winded formalities going on and certainly no stuffiness. Just pure undiluted care for their customers. Refreshing to see. Jason goes to further say: “The location here is ideal, as we’re just off the M5 and the M50, with Cheltenham and Tewkesbury on the doorstep and Worcester only up the road.”

Three Counties Subaru is a true family business and Jason is one of those rare commodities; a true born and bred ‘Cheltonian’ who lives in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. Jason says “I’m a complete workaholic and the little time I do have off I spend with my family.” The business also supplements its Subaru activity with stocking over 80 other types of cars at any one time ranging from £4K-£20K. All the used stock has had only one previous owner, with less than 30,000 miles on the clock. In other words, good quality used cars at a reasonable price. Jason goes onto further comment: “We treat customers here the way we would like to be treated ourselves.” It must be working, as the success of the business is built on referrals with second generations of families coming back to either purchase cars or to get some servicing done. And on that note I happily find out they’ll even provide a loan car whilst your own car is being dealt with. It’s a glowing indictment on the business that they are in the top ten dealerships for Subaru in the UK. Now I know as a motoring journalist that Subaru set incredibly high standards, so Three Counties Subaru must be doing something right. The future for the business looks bright. “I’d like to think we will have another Subaru site within three years’. So you see old school lessons and values can mean growth and to celebrate this very fact Three counties Subaru are offering every Style reader a complimentary five year guarantee with any vehicle purchased in June. What nice chaps. CS

a nippy city car Jim McGill test drives the Skoda Citigo 1.0...

Take Skoda’s new city car, the sweetlynamed Citigo, and the awesomely fast and powerful Bugatti Veyron. Ok, it’s not often you’ll ever see such extremes of the automotive world placed in the same sentence, but the question is: what do they have in common? The answer is Josef Kaban. The man who styled the 987bhp, 8.0-litre, 268mph Veyron is exactly the same Slovakian gentleman who has penned the 59bhp, three-cylinder Skoda city car. The Citigo is the smallest car Skoda has ever built and its first-ever production three-door; it’s also available in five-door form; but most importantly it’s the biggest change in the company’s history. Why? Because this is the first time it has been able to offer a car which will appeal to any age or gender, so it’s a huge leap forward. This is the car many people believe will change the general public’s perception of Skoda and bring in a new breed of customer. But don’t think Skoda’s struggling in the ever-more demanding global car market: far from it. Last year it sold over 879,000 cars – up 15.3% on 2010 – so with the introduction of the Citigo, those figures are only set to improve further. Built in Bratislava in Slovakia, alongside the near identical Volkswagen up! and the JUNE 2012

Seat Mi, the Citigo is available in three trim levels - S, SE and Elegance. There’s only one engine, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol. It is though available in a choice of two outputs, 59bhp and 73bhp. Will there be a diesel? According to Skoda insiders, it’s a very definite ‘no’. Too expensive and thus unsaleable, are the reasons. Can’t argue with that. Both three and five door Citigos have the same dimensions: 3,560mm long, 1,650mm wide and 1,480mm tall. They also both offer the same class-leading 251-litre boot space, which increases to 959 litres with the rear seats folded. A similarly sized Kia Picanto, by contrast, delivers only 200 and 605 litres respectively. There’s enough room for adults to sit front and back, thanks to the space under the front seats for the rear passengers’ feet. The compact cabin is well thought out and put together, plus the quality of finish rivals that of many larger, more expensive cars. There are a number of nice touches. There’s small pockets on the edge of the front seats for a bit of extra storage, and if you’re tired of trying to catch your mobile phone as it goes flying from its resting place in your current car, you’ll be pleased to learn the Citigo has a special holder for a mobile phone which keeps it secure. An optional £250 pre-equipped portable

navigation systems sits cleverly on the top of the dashboard. The Citigo also benefits from a hands-free Bluetooth telephone, infotainment system and on-board trip computer which all utilise the same system. The Citigo’s 59bhp Green tech engine means there’s no road tax to pay, by dint of its low CO2 emissions of 96g/km. It will also return, according to Skoda, 68.9mpg. Despite its size, the little engine thrives on buzzing around town. Its raspy three-pot exhaust note merely adds to the pleasure, and its nippy acceleration makes city lane-changing fun. And don’t worry about coping with motorway traffic; even the smallest of the Citigo powerplants is capable of mixing it at 70mph. All models have stability control (ESP) fitted as standard, and Skoda the five-door is just £350 more expensive than the three-door. Cleverly, the entry-level Skoda Citigo, the £7630 1.0 MPI 60 S, undercuts the equivalent VW up! by £365 and Seat Mii by £215. At £8530, the SE returns 62.8mpg and, at 95g/km, ducks comfortably below the 100g/km barrier when it comes to CO2 emissions. Looks as though Skoda has yet another winner on its hands. CS

Born in London in October 1988 to famous parents, former model Marisol Acuna and football star John Fashanu, Amal Fashanu at 1.8m tall can be described as catwalk gorgeous with to die for ‘Bambi’ eyes. But there is much more to her than this beautiful exterior. Well educated and able to speak fluent Spanish, English and French, Amal after a sojourn in Madrid returned to London in 2006, to earn a degree in Communications and Media before venturing into a public career of modelling. For those of you who did not see the recent BBC 3 documentary, Amal is actively supporting ‘The Justin Campaign’. A charity with the slogan, ‘Footballers Against Homophobia’ (www.thejustincampaign.com) founded in honour of her late uncle, Justin Fashanu, the first £1m black footballer. “I was very young at the time and remember my uncle with great affection. So this was a very emotional journey for me as I concentrated on the sacrifice that he made and to try to come to some understanding as to why there are still no openly gay footballers. No one seems to generate such venom in the same way with other sports or toward openly gay women, so the question has to be: why?” There is a war on words. Variations on the word ‘homophobe’ are often used to describe anyone who disagrees with homosexuality. If the user, by doing so, can get a reaction from using them then much of the ‘battle’ as they see it is won. In accusing anyone who disapproves the intention is to generate a negative emotional connotation and accuse the guilty party of unwarranted prejudice and discrimination. It is a disingenuous way of handling the subject, and is used when JUNE 2012

intellectual arguments in its support are not strong. All around the world there are people who disapprove of various behaviours such as adultery, hatred, mockery, stealing, lying. Because of this they are automatically labelled as a ‘....phobe’. Disapproving of something does not mean that the person has an unwarranted or unhealthy fear of it based on prejudice, ignorance or bigotry. So to describe someone as a ‘homophobe’ is not an argument that is based on logic or evidence, but on weak emotionalism and judgement. Amal continues: “Since Mahatma Gandhi said: ‘Love the sinner, hate the sin’, it has been used to do violence to people ever since. This, surely, was never his intention? More acceptability is required throughout our society in general. “I believe that if a footballer were to come out then this would have a major and positive impact on our behaviour.” We pride ourselves on being a nation of tolerance but often we worry about a speck in our friend’s eye when we have a log in our own. How can you think of saying, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Tolerance enables us to rid ourselves of the log from our own eyes; and when clear, we will see well enough to deal with the speck in our friend’s eye. The future is bright for Amal. Having completed her education, attended classes in dance, singing drama and being a successful model, Amal is now in a position to follow her dream of a career in the entertainment industry as a singer and song writer; helped by all the recent excitement she is generating in the media, for which she is extremely grateful. England, this summer is beginning to feel rather like, a whirl wind. There is absolutely no chance of anyone being able to avoid all things Olympic or Jubilee. Last month the torch came through Gloucestershire – and I have to say I was damn proud of the welcome and send off we gave it. Whatever your feelings or politics are about the Games or the Diamond Jubilee - and I know there are some who would rather move to Japan for the entire duration (probably the same people who brick up the fireplace on Christmas eve) – at the very least, a few moments of immense pride and JOY have surely got to be inevitable? Three months ago, I had a horrible accident, when I fell of my horse and broke a bone in my back while show jumping. I had nerve damage and for a period of time lost the feeling in my right leg. I also spent days terrified to move a muscle – the pain was almost unbearable. But as I recovered, I was able to do something I normally find impossible: relax, sit still, let the world keep spinning while I just… waited. This turned into a period of fairly dramatic reflection. If you stop, you begin to see things you might normally miss. Instead of being frustrated at my incapacity as all my friends expected I would be, I embraced the chance to actually get a little bored. (Not being able to do any housework or chores was also a bit of a treat). I usually crave a glass of wine at the end of a long day… but laid up in bed for great chunks of time, each day much like the last, I had no desire whatsoever for

anything to help me relax. I was already relaxed! My friends sent flowers and cards, took turns looking after my horses and visited me regularly (we installed a ‘visitor’s chair’ by the bed) and it made me feel very loved. My children would lie down with me for hours, while we told each other stories. I realised how much time people have for ME – have I ever been able to offer that much of myself to anyone else? I am now fully recovered (as well as I’ll ever be after breaking my back) and I am without a doubt more chilled out than I was before the accident. I have learnt the true number of minutes in a day and ironically, even though I waste less time and feel I am getting more things done… I am enormously less stressed and actually feel freer. The question I’ve been asked the most is, will I be getting back on a horse? Yes, in a heartbeat. I have always been very aware of the dangers, but if I give up now, I could end up being afraid to take any risks at all. How would we be getting on with our Olympic endeavour if no one ever took any risks? Sport, at whatever level you do it, requires enormous focus and dedication – a certain amount of risk is obligatory. The risk of failure being the most feared of all. What will earn Great Britain the Gold medals this year is exactly what I will be doing, along with hundreds of thousands of others across our nation inspired by the incredible commitment of all the athletes – getting right back up on that horse.
