editor’s foreword As the nights begin to draw in, it seems only natural to curl up on the sofa with a good book. And so what better treat for bookworms this month than the arrival of The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival? From 5th-14th October, the ‘Literati’ will flock to Cheltenham. This year’s programme is bursting with nearly five hundred events featuring some of the world’s greatest writers, actors, politicians, poets and leading opinion formers. Turn to page 24 to follow our indispensable guide to who’s heading to town, and which events should absolutely not be missed. Continuing with the literary theme, Andrew Marshall interviews Darcey Bussell on page 75. As Andrew says, “For those of you who may still be unaware of Darcey you will surely remember her appearance at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics, and also in The Vicar of Dibley and on The French and Saunders Show, The latter two of which emphasises the rich vein of humour that she possesses”. As well as being present at this year’s Festival, Darcey is also a resident judge on BBC’s Strictly Coming Dancing. Racing style is all wrapped up with a guide on how to both dress your hair for the races from Laura Leigh Hairdressing, along with a contemporary twist on tweed on page 88. Winter wardrobes come into focus this month, with a look at the styles available at Gloucester Quays, turn to page 80 to look at the fashion available right on your doorstep. “I don’t know how it happened!” With help from her loyal team of ‘Spoonettes’, local business woman Katie Dobson’s dreams have come true with a contract to supply Liberty London with her bespoke cutlery. Emma Roberts talks to ‘The High Commissioner’ of the Cheltenham based company that is catapulting its way to success… As I walk to meet Katie at The Montpellier Chapter in Cheltenham, I have a thousand questions racing through my mind relating to her inspiring business journey. Having already spotted and fallen in love with her gorgeous designs, I can’t help but feel a little envious of such a simple business idea that is now so widely known and highly regarded, let me introduce you to The Cutlery Commission. Katie’s original hand crafted designs have found their way into many of my family and friends’ homes; I often read magazine features and see perfectly propped shots featuring her clever cutlery, and am greeted with the unique designs in local shops too. And so it’s hard to believe that Katie only launched the business as recently as six months ago on a full-time basis. Glowing with the kind of happiness that comes from doing a job that you love, Katie explains how she came up with the idea, “I love car boot sales! My favourite is the one that is held at

Cheltenham Racecourse. One day I found myself hunting through boxes of china looking for a gift for a friend and found a rather sad looking silver spoon. I had no idea that this simple discovery would lead me to where I am today! I used my old steel letters from my silversmithing days and a hammer to stamp the words ‘HEY SUGAR’ onto the spoon and instantly fell a little bit in love. Since then I haven’t looked back.” After posting a photograph on Facebook of one of her designs, Katie soon realised that there was huge demand for her cutlery. “I never set out to build a brand”, she says, “The whole process has been very organic and I feel incredibly thankful that people have always come to me to place orders and that I haven’t had to heavily push any of my ideas. I love my job! When I wake up I feel really excited… I’ve never been like this before.” Gradually, Katie began sourcing more vintage cutlery to stamp and give as special gifts to friends and family. Word spread around the Cotswolds and within a matter of months she had left her parttime job and had taken up position as ‘The High Commissioner’ of The Cutlery Commission. “My dining room is currently The Cutlery Commission HQ”, Katie explains. “Much to my boyfriend’s OCTOBER 2012

“RECENTLY A CUSTOMER BOUGHT 45 ‘SPREAD THE LOVE’ BUTTER KNIVES AS WEDDING FAVOURS”

dismay at times, when he is watching television and I’m hammering out designs. But he has been wonderfully supportive throughout this journey, as have my Spoonettes!” Katie has found support in the form of her four fabulous Spoonettes. The Spoonettes are four of Katie’s friends who help to complete orders by hammering out the wording that she has designed. Every letter or digit is stamped individually either by Katie or one of her fabulous team and this is how the typography achieves such an individual form. Of course, this also means that no two pieces of cutlery are ever the same and this is what really sets the brand apart. “The cutlery is all silver plated and hand crafted and so each piece is unique and is a kind of keepsake”, Katie says. “I love being involved with my customers’

design decisions and have had some lovely requests. Recently a customer bought 45 ‘Spread the love’ butter knives as wedding favours. I love to follow these stories up, such as the ‘Marry me?’ designs.” “If somebody had said to me a year ago that I would have set up my own company and doing all of this then I would never have believed them. However, it’s all kind of snowballed and with the news that my designs are now being sold in Liberty London, I just could not be happier!” Katie reflects. I ask Katie if she has ever had any doubts about giving up her previous job to pursue this dream. “I think if I had ever sat down and really thought about it then I may not be doing this today. Imagining myself handling international imports and exports and expanding the range and building the website would just not have seemed real. That’s why I always advise people to just go for it!” Katie kindly hands me a gift of two gorgeous pieces of cutlery before she leaves and it’s instantly apparent why her business has grown so fast… the kind of gifts that offer as much happiness to the recipient as they do to the bearer. All the fun of The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival, 5-14 October The kids have gone back to school, the summer holidays are a long distant memory, and there’s a distinctly autumnal chill in the air…which can all only mean one thing – Cheltenham Literature Festival is just around the corner! This year’s programme is bursting with nearly five hundred events featuring some of the world’s greatest writers, actors, politicians, poets and leading opinion formers. It’s going to be a big ten days – so here’s our indispensable guide of who’s heading to town, and which events should absolutely not be missed… DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF AWARD-WINNING WRITERS

S

At its heart the festival is all about the joy of words – whether that’s reading,

er Reafdfer O

To celebrate the start of the Festival, we’re treating one lucky winner to two tickets to the Women of Downton Abbey event on Sunday 7th October and a copy of the sumptuous new book ‘The Chronicles of Downton Abbey’. writing or just having a good chat. And because of that, it’s a brilliant place to find out how some of the world’s best writers get their ideas, and turn them into award-winning books. This year’s line-up features such literary talents as Man Booker prize winners Ian McEwan, Pat Barker and Salman Rushdie; best-selling authors Sebastian Faulks, Paul Auster, Mark Haddon, Iain Banks and Alexander McCall Smith; and popular crime writers PD James, Val McDermid, Kathy Reichs and Ian Rankin. In a real coup the Festival also features a rare, now sold-out, appearance from writing royalty (and our cover star) J.K. Rowling. All of these literary giants will be revealing their latest novels, looking at what makes a great book and sharing their tips for penning the next best-seller. It’s a great chance to get your creative juices flowing, as well as discovering the next big thing in literature. GO BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE STAGE AND SCREEN

For the ten days of the Festival you’d be hard pushed not to notice a famous face or two strolling about the town. Spotting a Hollywood star window-shopping on the Promenade or bumping into your favourite TV chef in the book tent is a brilliant perk of a day at the Festival. This year’s programme presents plenty of opportunities to ‘spot’ some of the country’s best loved actors and performers. You can discover the secrets of the stage and screen with acting greats Roger Moore, Rupert Everett, Stephen Mangan, Tom Hollander, Christopher Eccleston, Jenny Agutter and John Simm; go behind the scenes of some outstanding TV dramas with a look back at Olympic comedy Twenty Twelve, a focus on the Women of Downton Abbey and an insiders view of Poirot from David Suchet himself; and meet home and garden gurus Nigella Lawson,

Kevin McCloud, Kirstie Allsopp and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. You can also enjoy some sequinspangled glamour courtesy of the stars of Strictly Come Dancing as new judge and prima ballerina Darcey Bussell, ballroom dancer Anton Du Beke, 2012 contestant Victoria Pendleton and previous champion Tom Chambers are all in this year’s Festival line-up. A brilliant excuse to get your dancing shoes on… A GRAND DAY OUT… FOR ALL THE FAMILY!

From being read your first picture book as a baby, to discovering a classic tale for the first time – the joy of books starts from a very young age! The festival has a whole feast of storytelling, drawing, workshops and free fun for even the youngest of literary lovers in its family festival within a festival – Book It! There will be appearances from old favourites like Fireman Sam, Peter Rabbit, Elmer and Spot as well as the chance to discover new friends from some brilliant children’s authors like Jacqueline Wilson, Terry Pratchett, Anthony Horowitz, Eoin Colfer and Judith Kerr. In between a packed day of events, the whole family will be able to relax, refresh and recharge in the Festival’s brand new Food Hall. It will showcase the best local produce and a feast of world cuisines for all to enjoy. So, whether you want to debate the merits of Dickens, learn how to write your first novel, hold hands with Peter Rabbit, or get the backstage scoop on your favourite TV drama – you’ll find a world of words at Cheltenham Literature Festival this month. The Gables, Beckford Hall Beckford Setting the Scene: The Gables is situated in the popular village of Beckford, roughly equidistant between the towns of Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and Evesham. The village offers local amenities including a village shop/post office, public house, village hall and tennis courts. Why we love it: The Gables is the major part of Beckford Hall, which traces its origins back to the 12th century and was converted into four dwellings in the 1970s. The property retains many period features including a grand staircase with a carved balustrade and acorn finials. The Minstrel’s Gallery has wonderful stone carved “musicians” to three sides with a magnificent glass roof, said to have been painted by a pupil of Pugin, supported by deeply carved beams depicting roses and acorns, all of which give to The Gables, real charm and elegance. The house is quite simply stunning with the accommodation, which is arranged over four floors, providing wonderful living and entertaining space and with the lower ground floor offering the potential for conversion to further living accommodation, subject to the necessary consents being obtained, or for being used for storage having the original flagstone floors and being in excellent condition. It has 3 reception rooms, minstrel’s gallery, kitchen/breakfast room, 2 bedroom suites, 4 further bedrooms, a shower room and family bathroom. In addition there is a double garage and parking for several cars. The property is approached along a gravelled driveway through the gardens, leading past the double garage and culminating in a parking area. Cotswold ‘village’ new show-home now open New homes sophistication and style is now very much on view at what is surely one of the Cotswolds’ most ideal locations

Broadway show-home ‘on view’ Newland Homes has opened the doors of its superb new 4-bedroom family ‘Broadway’ show-home at atmospheric Coln Gardens, an eclectic collection of thirty-nine, high quality specification 2, 3,4 and 5-bedroom homes, located just a short ‘hop’ from Cheltenham and right in the heart of the community minded ‘village’ of Andoversford. Expertly presented The new Broadway show-home has been expertly prepared and presented by Cheltenham designer, Barbara Caspari, who has assembled numerous imaginative, eye-catching and highly innovative room settings using memorable colours, tones, décor and textures throughout. Particularly eye-catching are the splashes of vibrant colour and the modern almost ‘funky’ feel to be found within the home. Drama, impact and sophistication Barbara explains: “My challenge was to achieve a memorable interior presentation, which nevertheless was in step with the traditional atmosphere of the wonderful stone finish exterior to be found at Coln Gardens. I went for impact and sophistication, achieved through the use of silver, with a splash of purple and black to add drama and I also used some highly original reflective surfaces. The ‘Broadway’ show-home admirably demonstrates how unique and stylish a living environment can be created within every Newland home.” High quality Currently available for immediate reservation are 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes, priced from £174,950 - 269,950. OCTOBER 2012

The homes at exclusively private Coln Gardens are of a high quality specification. They are set in a traditional atmospheric environment having Cotswold stone elevations, natural slate to roofs and traditionally laid dry-stone walling boundary. Best of both worlds Andoversford offers the best of both worlds being located just off the A40 Oxford-Cheltenham, with the famous Cotswold countryside all around road. But the excellent amenities of Cheltenham are just a short drive away. Also, this unique development is within easy access to the Cotswolds countryside and the likes of Cirencester, Stroud and Oxford. ...for every lifestyle A major attraction of Coln Gardens is that there are no fewer than 12 different house styles to choose from – so, there is certain to be a home for every buyer, no matter what their lifestyle ...as standard As well as numerous home style choices,

all the properties at Coln Gardens are built to a high quality specification and finish. Newland Homes includes as standard the many fittings and features which numerous other developers charge for as ‘extras’. Solar panels too All the Newland Homes properties for sale at Coln Gardens are highly energy efficient and have up-to-the-minute electricity generating solar panels installed. Newland has won praise for this particular feature and also for the exceptional design and environmentally sensitive presentation of the Coln Gardens development as a whole. Surprised Newland Sales Manager, Gail Remnant, explains “Our visitors and buyers alike always say how impressed, even surprised, they are to find such a wonderful, traditional stone-built brand new home in a Cotswold village, which is modern, superbly fitted and finished and affordable too - and which can really be theirs. It can be - it is here now at Coln Gardens! ” CS

AN OCTOBER

JEWEL with Camilla Bassett-Smith

Gloucestershire Horticulturalist Camilla Bassett-Smith has a Chelsea Gold Medal and was part of the BBC production team for Gardeners’World. She has just completed the role of horticultural consultant on BBC programme ‘The Flowerpot Gang’. This month we unwrap the Guernsey Lily...

OCTOBER 2012

As we busy ourselves buying spring flowering bulbs to plant, there is one bulb that is busy flowering now: the nerine. This fascinating plant is a member of the Amaryllidaceae family and the shocking pink of Nerine bowdenii (one of only a few hardy members of this genus) is gracing many a Cotswold garden as we speak. They favour a sunny well drained site in poor soil and a border at the base of a sunny wall is ideal. They quite like to be ‘baked’ over a hot summer and a very good friend of mine and former researcher on Gardeners’ World, found one in a greenhouse that had been forgotten about, but flowered in fine form! Don’t plant too deeply either, leaving the bulb neck exposed above the soil is often practiced or just an inch under the soil surface will suffice. There are around 30 species of nerine, originally from South Africa, with the majority being non-hardy in this country. One such non-hardy species is Nerine sarniensis, often referred to as ‘The Guernsey Lily’ in addition to the ‘Diamond’ or ‘Jewel’ Lily. It was the first nerine to be cultivated in Europe and there are a few accounts on how this spectacular orange bloom came to be associated with Guernsey. The first is of the ocean variety and points to a shipwreck in the 17th Century, when a ship survivor gave a gift of nerine bulbs to a local family who offered him hospitality. Another similar version states that boxes of nerines headed for Holland were lost from a sinking ship and took root on the shores of Guernsey. A contrasting tale tells of a fairy encounter. It is said that a visiting fairy prince put a spell on a Guernsey beauty called Michelle and on taking her with him to fairyland, left in her place a beautiful pink flower to comfort those

Michelle had left behind. A final tale suggests that the bulbs may have been taken to the island from London by General John Lambert who had acquired bulbs from Paris in the 17th Century. Whichever you chose to believe, the bulbs made their way to Guernsey and flourish there to this day, on show in the annual Nerine Festival which takes place on the island this month. ‘Sarnia’, by the way, is the Roman name for Guernsey, hence sarniensis. They were originally known as Lillium sarniensis, until William Herbert – an expert on Amaryllids – named them nerines in the 19th Century. William was clearly a believer of one of the nautical legends as ‘Nerine’ is a sea nymph from the world of Greek mythology. The famous actress Lillie Langtry was holding a nerine in the well known Millais portrait of her. Entitled ‘The Jersey Lily’, as Lillie was known, it was said no Amaryllis belladonna (Jersey lillies) were available for the sitting, hence a ‘Guernsey Lily’ was the next best thing! It was thanks to Gloucestershire’s very own Henry John Elwes at the end of the 19th Century that a breakthrough in breeding of nerines came about, resulting in the availability of a wider variety of colours. Exbury Gardens in Hampshire then entered centre stage (or centre glasshouse) in the art deco period, when Lionel de Rothschild was busy hybridising. His grandson, Nicholas, is president of the Nerine Society and shares his grandfather’s passion for nerines today producing over 100 new hybrids at Exbury Gardens. A visit to Hampshire to view this fantastic collection is well worth it this October, or for a trip further afield, head to the Lower Glasshouse at Candie Gardens in Guernsey between the 7th and 21st for the Guersney Nerine Festival 2012. Failing that buy a couple of pots from your local nursery and start your own autumn display! CS

The golden month with Jon Hodder

Head Gardener at Sudeley Castle, Jon Hodder, comments on all things autumnal... Can it really be that Autumn is upon us? The greater part of the Summer has resembled October, with a few small moments of genuine summery joy. At least the weather will now finally match the season. September presented itself with good grace, and was as fair as ever it can be: a golden month indeed. The gardens are beginning to slow down and some of the growth is already being cut back. Now is a good time to ensure that secateurs and loppers are prepared for the forthcoming trimming. A short rub over with some sort of sharpening stone and the application of some light oil should be all they will require. Seed gathering can be done at the same time as the tidying. It’s best to store seed in envelopes, especially the finer kind such as Foxglove and Campanula. 2012 has been a memorable season at Sudeley. The re-enactment of Katherine Parr’s funeral on the 9th September sold out and heralded the end of the 500th anniversary celebrations. The other notable aspect of this year has been the extraordinary weather. The grass growth never slowed and in August we were cutting as much off as we usually do in the Spring. The extra time absorbed by grass cutting meant that maintaining the rest of the gardens carried new challenges. My fellow gardeners worked hard and together we managed to rise to the challenge. Owls: the creatures of the night; symbol of wise goddess Athena; birds of mystery and newly-arrived occupants in the Pheasantry at Sudeley. The Owls are proving to be very popular with our visitors, who are enjoying watching their transformation OCTOBER 2012

‘‘

“SO, THE SEASON OF MISTS AND MELLOW FRUITFULNESS INDEED. ENJOY THE MISTS, ENSURE THAT YOU BECOME FRUITFUL AND TRY TO REMAIN MELLOW”

from little feathery bundles with beak and claws to fine-feathered, majestic birds of prey. We have a pair of Snowy Owls, who were named Thomas and Katherine after Thomas Seymour and his wife Katherine Parr, following a competition we held on Facebook There’s also a Barn Owl and my personal favourite, a European Eagle Owl. He is a splendid bird. Tall, with beautiful markings and always animated. He will call quite freely and fix you with his steely gaze, the orange corona of his large eyes striking an amazing contrast with his brown feathers. A short while after his arrival I was watching him in his pen. A peacock had alighted on the top of the enclosure and was walking around in the supremely confident manner which they all too frequently posses. As he came to the area immediately above Eddie (as I am inclined to call him) he stopped short, and began to move with extreme caution. Eddie simply turned his head and gazed at the peacock with a

perceived air of nonchalance, as if to say ‘were the wire not between us my friend …’ So, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness indeed. Enjoy the mists, ensure that you become fruitful and try to remain mellow. In addition to all that, try to make some cider, ideally on Apple day October 21st. Have a look at www.commonground.org.uk for more information and for ideas including community orchards and tree dressing. CS Sudeley remains open until Sunday 28th October and for many this is the best season to visit. Check the website http://www.sudeleycastle.co.uk for full details of events, or call 01242 602308. Sudeley Castle Gardeners can be seen on their Facebook pages: www.facebook.com/ SudeleyCastleGardeners or follow @SudeleyCastle on Twitter.

Race for life Regular columnist, Heart presenter Niall Foster, tells us all about the plans that lay ahead for supporting Cancer Research UK...

Its great when something you are closely involved in elicits a heartfelt response. The job of a solo radio presenter can at times be a lonely one, unless you fill the studio with onlookers, guests or co-hosts anything you say or play is effectively to an empty room. It is hard to mentally compute at the time that the output is being sent to a transmitter, broadcast to thousands of radios and therefore in to the ears of a listening public. More often than not, the immediate response to anything is an empty room. That is why I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through the comments section of our Race For Life pages from this summer. Through our relationship with Cancer Research UK we have been honoured to support the Race For Life series in Gloucestershire and are set to continue to do so, with the opportunity to sign up for next year’s race already here (see link below). Personally I spent a glorious sun filled morning on the Bathurst estate just outside Cirencester this summer, where I was lucky enough to send off and welcome over the finish line thousands of runners, walkers and joggers who all shared one thing in common; their lives had been touched by cancer and they wanted to take the chance to do something about it, whether in memory of a loved one or as an active fundraiser and often both. It is reading the

comments that some posted on our website, that brings home the strength of feelings that are felt:

‘I lost my Dad 3 yrs ago after only 3 weeks from diagnosis, also I’ve lost my maternal Grandparents, my husbands Dad , a close friend, my best friends Dad and my Uncle has just been diagnosed. I race for them and a cure. ONE DAY WE WILL BEAT IT.’ Terri ‘I did my Race for Life because I have lost friends and family to this and my wonderful uncle Phil at time was suffering from it, but now in remission. Wahooooo’. Maria

‘I ran for my nan and mum who cancer has sadly touched. nan lost her battle but mum has won three times. Go Mum! The emotion which was felt during the minute's silence during the pre-run warm up was awe inspiring. Looking forward to next year.’ Lucy These are just three examples of many and display why the Race For Life series is such a successful and emotional event. Standing on the finish line handing out the high fives, hugs and congratulations I was exposed to a range of emotions that ran from grief and distress right through to hope and a real sense of achievement, and when you know that the work of Cancer Research UK has helped to double the survival rates for cancer sufferers in the last forty years you know that what you have done has been worthwhile. CS

If you want to get next year’s dates in your diary now then sign up early, all the details on the races including many more stories and comments from people who have completed an event are online here: www.heart.co.uk/gloucestershire/ events/race-for-life OCTOBER 2012

‘‘

Cheltenham Literary Festival Interview By Andrew Marshall Until the internet police locked down our computers at work, Darcey Bussell was my screen saver. It was not only an artistic picture but a picture that reflected the warmth, charm and natural beauty that still oozes out of the former principal dancer at the Royal Ballet, who continues to glide effortlessly across the ground. Darcey’s dancing career started at the age of 16, progressing to the Royal Ballet Upper School, before graduating into the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet in 1987. It was here that she appeared in a number of productions resulting her landing the leading role in 1988 in The Prince of the Pagodas, before moving on to The Royal Ballet. For those of you who may still be unaware of Darcey you will surely remember her appearance at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics, and also in The Vicar of Dibley and on The French and Saunders Show, the latter two of which emphasises the rich vein of humour that she possesses. Away from the Royal Ballet life has had high and low moments. Highs have come with the publication of her six books in the children’s series The Magic Ballerina, and her numerous modeling assignments with regular appearances in Vogue, Tatler, and now Cotswold Style. And as for the lows, Darcey writes about them in her new photo-biography. She is incredibly open and philosophical about the whole situation. “I have two beautiful children, Phoebe and Zoe, and they are the world to me. It had always been my intention to live abroad on my retirement. Angus is Australian, so we set up home in Sydney. Here I thought I could be an ordinary mum, if there is such a thing. It was a great adventure for us, but because I had been so incredibly active until my retirement in 2007, and the sudden change of pace left me with a void in my life that at the time I just could not fill. In turn this led me into a deep depression. “It was my husband, Angus, who brought home to me the reality of how low I had sunk. He made me realise that I was at my best when I was busy. At the OCTOBER 2012

Darcey

Bussell “IT WAS MY HUSBAND, ANGUS, WHO BROUGHT HOME TO ME THE REALITY OF HOW LOW I HAD SUNK. HE MADE ME REALISE THAT I WAS AT MY BEST WHEN I WAS BUSY. AT THE TIME I WASN’T PREPARED TO ADMIT THAT I WAS SUFFERING’

time I wasn’t prepared to admit that I was suffering. Outwardly to everyone I appeared the happy person that people had always known, but inside I was suffering. To me it was a weakness to admit that I couldn’t cope. Once I realised where I was at I took action to make myself busy again.” “Although I have retired from the stage, I am only 43 with a great deal of life ahead of me. I still play an active part as president of the Royal Academy of Dance, which trains teachers and students, and am looking forward to appearing on Strictly Come Dancing as one of the judges. Rehearsals are underway and will be happening by the time your readers see this”.

’’

So are there any lingering thoughts on early retirement? “Not at all. At one stage I thought I could retire. I realise now that I need to be busy as well. Although the kids love Australia and we still have our house in Sydney, the Olympics and Strictly have brought me back here. This last year has seen a wonderful change for me. Life is good again, so with the house rented out there are no plans to return for at least a couple of years.” Darcey will be appearing at this year’s Cheltenham Literary festival. “I’m thrilled with the book and the opportunity to appear at the festival. It will give me the chance of meeting some of you.” CS

fashion Committee Member, Chris Mercer, reflects on the huge success of this summer’s Art Couture Painswick Festival, and looks ahead to next year’s fabulous event...

Perfect PAINSWICK Photography by All in the Image

What an amazing summer we’ve had, apart from the weather of course! The whole Olympics triumph has really put a spring back into our steps and made us proud to be British again. Here in Painswick, these euphoric feelings began back in mid-July with the third ACP Festival. How did we turn the sleepy streets of picture-perfect Painswick into the mustattend festival event of 2012, drawing a crowd of some 10,000 people? How did we also pick the only dry day in months on which to hold it? The iconic St Mary’s churchyard, with its distinctive sculptured yew trees and table tombs, was the perfect backdrop for body art, music and the sculptural creations of Art Couture, whilst the Painswick streets were crammed with a feast of art, craft, produce and fabulous

food stalls, served up with a garnish of street entertainment and belly dancing! This remarkable festival focuses on a competition to create a piece of wearable art, inspired by one of the four themes dreamt up by the organisers. Open to all ages and abilities, the competition is judged by a panel of luminaries from the worlds of art and fashion, and prestigious prizes are awarded. Other highlights of the festival this year included the body art competition - universally acclaimed - and the locally sourced musical talent who played the perfect soundtrack to the weekend. So, next year? Hot off the press, so run for your diaries, the ACP Festival will take place on Sunday 14th July. We hope to see you there!

Left: Millie Mercer, winner with her brother Joshua of the Open 12-17 category Below: Octavia Elwes, Best in Show winner for the Head Candy section

Next month, exclusively in Cotswold Style, we will reveal the ACP themes for 2013, to get your creative juices flowing. We will also feature an interview with one of this year’s winning designers, who can hopefully pass on some secrets to their success! “I love Novostrata” ‘Working mum’ doesn’t quite cover it in this case, maybe ‘Supermum’ is more appropriate. Amanda Stretton juggles working mum status with being the first British female Le Mans racing driver, a TV presenter, speaker, writer and model Amanda Stretton inherited her love of speed from her late father, Terry Cohn, well known in classic and historic vehicle circles. While most girls were still playing with dolls, Amanda was learning race-craft on two wheels. Taking on the men at their own game, Amanda has won races in the tough FIA GT Championship. She’s an accomplished TV presenter with a string of programmes for Channel 4 and Channel 5 behind her. However, as a mother to two young children, Amanda manages to combine this hectic lifestyle with a skincare regime that delivers wonderful results, and we find out how. How important is looking after your skin to you? Incredibly important! Working in studios with heavy lighting and on freezing cold and windy racetracks, my skin is constantly put to the test. I need products that deliver results quickly. I’m also a huge believer in the fact that when you look better, you feel better and that can only be a good thing!

Q A

What are your favourite products to use? I love the Novostrata Regeneration Eye Cream, it hides a multitude of sins and is my absolute favourite! I’m a stickler for keeping my skin both cleansed and moisturised and it’s also important to use products that contain UV protection. I spend so much time outside in conditions that can be harsh on my skin. Race tracks are notoriously cold, windy, rainy and full of exhaust fumes and so I need to use products that I can trust to protect my skin.

Q A

When did you begin using Novostrata products? I started to use them around two years ago and haven’t looked back since. Since I began using the BioCollagen Foaming Cleanser and the Hydrogel Mask I have noticed a slowdown in the deterioration of my skin and love the fact that they are so quick and easy to use. They’re schoolrun friendly products!

• Uneven skin pigment Patches of dark skin, known as age spots, are common once we hit our 50s. It’s caused by sun exposure and hormonal changes. Use a daily moisturiser with adequate SPF to protect skin from UV rays all year round. Try Novostrata Dual Effect Sunblock SPF 42 • Bags under eyes The skin around our eyes becomes weaker as we age and skin sags, causing bags. Old fashion treatments such as placing cucumber slices or used teabags under each eye helps reduce puffiness. Try Novostrata Regeneration Eye Cream

light pressure. The Rejuvenate serum contains light-weight hyaluronic acid meaning that smaller, nano- particles can easily infused into the skin. The Unique Rejuvenate Serum also contains a powerful combination of vitamins (Vit A. Vit E, Vit C) and antioxidants (Green Tea and Aloe Vera). The Hyaluronic Acid helps instantly to hydrate the skin resulting in increased firmness, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and improves facial contours and overall radiance. All composites are natural, plant derived and Paraben free. To understand better the effects on the sagging skin, let’s look into the causes for it: Collagen fibres that are holding the facial skin structure are also normally lubricated by hyaluronic acid, with age or smoking your skin becomes dehydrated and as a result, poor lubrication causes the collagen fibres to become saggy and brittle. That is why hydration of the facial fibres is a very important part of combating the loss of elasticity.” From October, A-List Aesthetics will be offering a new range of Rejuvenate serums that contain an instant booster with collagen to have a double action,

We all dream of having picture perfect skin, but more often than not we need a little helping hand along the way. Hollywood has found a best friend in the form of the skin plumping effects of the Oxygen Facial. In order to achieve flawless skin that is worthy of the red carpet, Hollywood royalty is hooked on the skin boosting effects of this fabulous facial. I was intrigued and so went along to visit Dr Zulia Frost at A-List Aesthetics in Cheltenham. Following an analysis of my skin type and the kind of results that I’m looking to achieve, I was guided through the benefits of the treatment. Dr Zulia explains, “As part of aging, the human body declines in making a natural lubricant called ‘hyaluronic acid’ roughly when we reach late 20s. This hyaluronan, (another name is glycon) is called by cosmetic scientists a ‘substance of youth’ due to its ability to bind to water molecules and provide deep hydration. Hyaluronic acid when bound with water swells up to 10,000 times its weight, bringing back a youthful hydrated state of the skin. However, the molecules are large and have to be delivered to the deeper layers of the skin to make this effect. Until recently, the only effective way was the invasive method of injections, however, now there is a new technology allowing delivery by using Oxygen under a gentle

deep hydration and collage increase. Other boosters are available with powerful natural antioxidants sourced from the Australian rainforest, Vit C and Vit A to strengthen, protect and support healthy skin. A-List Aesthetics address the most challenging skin conditions through breakthrough science, with treatments and natural products that create immediate, dramatic effects and accumulative, long term changes to skin. If all that skin science might seem a bit daunting, you can rest assured that Dr Zulia Frost and her team will make you feel at ease the moment you meet them. Their treatments are beautifully soothing and calming, they work their magic on your skin like artists and you will experience a unique treatment, focusing on your worst worries, whatever they are: frown lines, dark circles with droopy eyelids, or saggy chin. So whether you are looking to regain and maintain youthful looking skin by improving the overall health, texture, hydration and elasticity of the skin, or are simply looking for a one off treatment for instantly smooth and radiant looking skin for that special occasion, they help you achieve beautiful skin, naturally. Llewelyn-Bowen lends a helping hand Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa unveil their stylish new surroundings Fabulous new interiors have been unveiled at the luxury Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa in Cheltenham. A sleek and modern monochrome scheme now adorns the salon’s flagship premises in Imperial Square. With the support of celebrity client and design guru, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, The Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa now boasts a brand new look and feel. The refurbishment of the four storey regency building is a totally sympathetic renovation of a listedbuilding that incorporates a fabulous contemporary slant. Stuart and Sara Holmes, a renowned husband and wife team, have tried to continue to emulate the feel of a city boutique hotel with the enhanced reception and waiting areas giving clients an area in which to totally relax. Lattes, cappuccinos and glasses of

‘‘

Champagne are readily served alongside nibbles to clients as they arrive. A new colour scheme, funky wallpapers by LLB Design and luxurious new furniture add an exciting extra dimension to the whole salon. The recent renovation saw the creation of eight new cutting sections plus the instillation of a luxury Hair Spa. The Hair Spa, which is located on the floor above the salon, is used as the main hair washing area and provides a serene environment where clients can enjoy total relaxation without having to listen to the whirl of the hairdryers and general noise on the salon floor. The Hair Spa is subtly lit with sensual mood lighting, boasts footstools for each washing station and is adorned with

8ft high Stuart Holmes branded Shu Uemura art. Speaking exclusively to Cotswold Style, Stuart said: “Many of our clients lead very busy lifestyles, so from the moment they step inside The Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa we want them to feel entirely relaxed. The redesign has extended the relaxation ethos within the salon. The first floor is now more open plan and combined with the huge windows extenuates the high ceilings and gives the salon a really grand feel. Our brand new Hair Spa goes that little bit further and creates an experience which is truly unique.” With a history in The Savoy Hotel Group, Sara Holmes has truly put her hospitality and hotel background to work within the salon. The new interior truly solidifies the feeling of a beautiful boutique hotel. The Kingdom of SWAZILAND

Max Le Grand relishes a kingdom of glass blowers and plentiful brides

Polygamy is part of life’s rich pattern in The Kingdom of Swaziland. No wonder the loins of white colonialists, have been inflamed by the suppression of monogamy. At the last count, King Mswati III had thirteen wives, all chosen from respected clans. Swaziland is embraced by South Africa and Mozambique. You could encapsulate the kingdom within an area the size of Ulster. The country is ideal for senior travellers and gap year students, striving for the Africa-in-One experience. Unlike most capitals, where the seat of power is city based. The politicians prefer to work in the open countryside of Lobamba, just south-east of the capital Mbabane. Parliament is open to visitors along with the national archives. The nearby Royal Residence was out of bounds. However, I did meet with Prince Philip, a member of the royal Dlamini family. The Prince is the monarch’s appointed artist. Apparently, the King has residences throughout his domain. He likes to fraternise with his subjects. That’s why Swazi’s are fiercely patriotic. They love to sing and dance, while the clan chief will introduce single or married men to prospective wives, at the drop of a hat. Moving around by car, I noticed the metalled roads are well marked and sign posted. Over loaded vehicles are known to career off the road. I had a narrow squeak when a wheel came past me, then an errant car, with a driver fighting for control. It veered to a halt on three wheels, in Right: Lobamba tribal dancers Below: Running to work at Bulembu

front of my vehicle. Seven people emerged unscathed. Secondary roads are dusty dirt tracks, akin to rally stages. Torrential rain reduced the surface to a quagmire. Swazi’s deplore cycling because of the undulating high veldt. Youngsters prefer to run. However, hotels do provide mountain bikes, for the more energetic overseas visitors. Just north-east of Mbabane, is the village of Ngwenya. Here I found the only glass blowing factory in Southern Africa. Swaziland was introduced to this molten art with appropriate machinery by a Swedish Aid Project in 1979. Amazingly, the Swazi’s took to glass blowing like kids to bubble gum. They produce some beautiful glass ornaments. Sheltered by Malolotja’s majestic peaks, Hawane Resort is worth a stop over. The roomy chalet’s offer a traditional thatched roof. Some boisterous guests went rock climbing, quad biking or paddling kayak’s. I was content to ride a docile dobbin called ‘Image’ over the hills. The area is reminiscent to the Lake District, open and extremely wind blown on this occasion. I drove along another pot holed track, to the one time ghost village of Bulembu, right up against the border with South Africa. A British owned asbestos mining company was abandoned in 2001, when the market collapsed. Bulembu fell into dilapidation. Fortunately, forestry workers moved in to re-establish the overgrown dwellings. The lodge, previously the Managing Directors retreat, now provides spacious accommodation. British remnants can be seen on road signs like, Winston

Churchill Crescent and Hyde Park Lane. Bulembu is a heavenly bolt hole. There are five game parks in Swaziland. Mkhaya is some 10,000 hectares of wild bush. Soon after we plunged into the reserve, an elephant charged across our bow, just missing the 4x4 Land Rover by a hairs breadth. Clearly, we were the impostors in this animal kingdom. If you have never been on safari, the driver appeared drunk as he meandered aimlessly through the bush searching for animals. We stumbled upon a group of rhino, wallowing in a mud pool. They rose clumsily then lumbered into the undergrowth. We then spotted two giraffe gnawing at the tree tops. They stood palace guard still as we photographed them. A lake revealed the nasal periscopes of hippos. Their calm was rudely imposed upon as a monstrous crocodile slipped off the bank into the lake. The hippos downed periscopes, their surface wake betrayed a dash for survival. The tranquil location of Stone Camp on the reserve, was broken, when an Austrian lady screamed at being invaded in the chalet bathroom. While sheltered by solid walls and a strong roof, she failed to notice there was no glass in the wide framed windows. Monkey’s had caused the commotion. Swaziland really is a microcosm of Africa. Monogamist gentlemen should resist temptation. CS Holidays to The Kingdom of Swaziland can be arranged by Rod Gethins on 01 242 226578. www.worldsaparttravel.co.uk

The Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival 2012 ~A retrospective ~

By Alex Barrell, Regional Director, Brewin Dolphin

As early autumn dawns to the drone of combine harvesters across the Cotswolds amidst the beginnings of an ‘Indian summer’ (perhaps?!), a wistful yearning for the sun to have arrived two months previously could be forgiven. You do not need to be reminded that 2012 has been the wettest summer for 100 years, fatally scotching thousands of events across the country, not least Gatcombe and Badminton Horse Trials as well as the Game Fair - all ‘country’ events where a pair of wellies or a stout pair of walking boots one felt sure would have sufficed! It is therefore with great pride that the Brewin Dolphin Cheltenham Cricket Festival survived the meteorological onslaught to host another year of top class cricket, albeit one where a couple of matches were foreshortened. Huge credit must go to the ground staff who worked miracles to produce a first class playing surface and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club members and players who remained resolute in their optimism. ….and to all the cricket lovers and the massed hoards in the hospitality marquees who were not going to let a spot of rain dampen their spirits. OCTOBER 2012

The last time we saw so much rain at the Festival was 1912 when a match against a touring Australian team was rain interrupted and a match against Surrey was abandoned on the first day due to a waterlogged pitch! One needs long memories to put the weather of 2012 into perspective which is something that the Festival their sponsors, Investment Managers Brewin Dolphin, have in abundance. The former was founded in 1872 whilst Brewin Dolphin can trace its origins back to 1762 since when they have guided clients through the independence of the Americas, two world wars, the Great Depression of the 1930’s and the current economic uncertainties. Patience, fortitude and an unswerving professionalism is what characterises both institutions, qualities which were especially needed in 2012. Both the Cheltenham Cricket Festival and Brewin Dolphin are not successful because they have long histories; rather they have long histories because they are very good at what they do and I am delighted that the association is only in its infancy. The first week of the 2012 Festival was sadly blighted by weather for the

most part with glimpses of sun sadly unable to dry a waterlogged outfield. During the second week the rain abated and the true majesty of cricket at Cheltenham college was restored. Gloucestershire won their match against local rival Worcestershire with the help of Australian Ed Cowan who only the week before had been sent on a Euro Star train to Paris in order to gain his visa. The final day of the festival was one of the hottest days of the year, finally rewarding the Festival with a crowd of over 5000 people who were treated to a thrilling day’s play. For Brewin Dolphin it has been a baptism of fire (or should that be ‘water’!) that we have fully embraced and enjoyed. We have welcomed many clients and professional contacts to the Festival and have made many friends in the process. We would like to thank all the staff of GCCC, the players (especially captain Alex Gidman in his benefit year), officials, volunteers and ground staff for their tireless efforts in making the Festival of 2012 such a success. We look forward with anticipation to welcoming everyone back again next year to what we feel sure will be a much sunnier affair! CS

OCTOBER 2012

Resolve. Determination. Resilience. Passion. Just some of the qualities necessary to succeed in business and in life. Now add sheer willpower to the mix. In my book, that’s a pretty powerful combination. Seb Merritt, Brunsdon’s Employee Benefits Manager, possesses those qualities in spades. But Seb is the first to admit it wasn’t always like that. “I was brought up by my grandfather who I regarded as my dad. He was a fantastic role model – strong, exmilitary police, rational and a great believer in principle - the biggest influence in my life. Sadly he died when I was 16 and that had a profound effect on me. I dealt with the stress of his loss by comfort eating on a grand scale. I was always a big lad, but by my early twenties my weight had ballooned to 36 stone. Then one day I woke up and realised I was in a life or death situation. Not only that, but I was letting my dad down. That was the turning point and that’s when my determination and willpower kicked in. Within six months I’d lost 10 stone. Today, I’m literally half the man I was.” Seb joined Brunsdon in 2005 and immediately impressed my Partners and I as a real character with great potential. His background in group pension scheme administration (during which time he’d looked after the BBC’s scheme) seemed to be just what we were looking for to develop and expand our own Employee Benefits proposition. And we were proved right. Within a short period, his successful hard work highlighted the need for a dedicated Employee Benefits section and he was the natural choice to manage it. His approach is very ‘hands on’ and unique, in that he has the rare ability to blend the ‘front stage’ and ‘back stage’ roles when it comes to managing client relationships. “I intend to deliver the best possible service level experience to our customers,” he says. “We now administer schemes for

some very large household name companies and they deserve and expect nothing less. I see my role as making sure we exceed their expectations in every way.” I admire Seb’s ‘never say die’ and rational, down to earth attitude. He won’t be manipulated and his excellent negotiation skills help secure the best products and prices for our clients. He calls this ‘smart broking.’ Of course, all the talk on the Employee Benefits scene at the moment is about auto-enrolment. This is the biggest workplace pensions shake-up in decades and it’s due to start this month. All employers will have to automatically enrol eligible employees into a qualifying pension scheme – and contribute to it! “This is a massive challenge for most companies, and a great opportunity for Brunsdon to show what we can do, “ says Seb. “ The very large employers have to move on this immediately, whilst smaller companies have a little longer to prepare. But it’s the preparation which takes the time as a large amount of work has to be done beforehand. My concern is that a lot of companies have still not grasped the nettle and according to a recent survey,* half of all UK workers are still in the dark about the potential ramifications of autoenrolment. Here at Brunsdon we have all the facilities at our disposal to help employers address this issue.” Seb’s competitive streak and passion extends beyond work into sport. He plays rugby as prop for Cinderford RFC’s senior squad and coaches the juniors. And for relaxation? Fishing is his thing. Seb may be just a shadow of his former self in terms of weight, but as a force to be reckoned with in Employee Benefits he has grown in stature. Respect. I am getting divorced, and two years ago I suffered a severe car accident, and have been fighting for compensation ever since. I anticipate receiving something over ÂŁ150,000 within the next six months, but meanwhile my husband has left me, and I am frightened that, as we do not have a great deal of money, he will be entitled to half of my damages for personal injury. Is this right?

A

In the recent case of Mansfield v Mansfield 2011 the Court of Appeal dealt with just this issue. Lord Justice Thorpe stated that the fact that any capital available to a married couple came by way of compensation should not exclude it from the Courts' consideration, but that each case must be looked at on its own facts, and in many cases the application of the general sharing rule on divorce should be tempered to reflect the needs of the person suffering from personal injury and the purpose of the compensation they have obtained. In my view, if your husband's needs can be met without the Court having to dip into your capital, there is every possibility that your capital will remain untouched and reserved for your own use. You do not tell me what injuries you have suffered, but if the compensation is designed to assist with your future needs then those extra needs will have to be taken into account by the Court and money set aside to deal with them. This is therefore another way in which you could preserve your own compensation.

If you have been married for more than twenty years, the start point of the Court will be to look for an equal division of assets, but there is nothing to

Escape the rain... but avoid the puddles!

This year’s unusually soggy summer may have helped you make that decision to purchase a holiday home in dryer climes. Naturally, there are any numbers of practicalities to consider if this is the case. Although the meteorological climate in your dream location may be better than here, if you are considering Europe, the economic one may not be. For instance, from July this year even if you are not resident in France for French tax purposes, not only will you be liable for French income tax on any French rental income and French capital gains tax on the sale of the property, but you will also be liable for French ‘social contributions’ at a rate of 15.5% on top of these taxes. Traditionally non-French residents have not been liable to social contributions because non-residents are unlikely to use the French medical and others services as frequently as French residents do. Another point to consider is the local succession law. Here in the UK we have ‘testamentary freedom’. In principle you can leave everything you own to the Donkey Sanctuary should you wish to do so. However, in many European jurisdictions there are fixed rules stating who you can leave your property to. There is a set proportion that must pass

to a spouse and to each child (depending on their number) plus a freely disposable portion. The court in the UK heard recently the case of turkeyman Bernard Matthews, who tried to leave his ‘bootiful’ French chateau entirely to his mistress of many years. Some of his children of his marriage have chosen to ignore a letter he wrote them before he died and are insisting on being given their legal portions of the chateau under French succession rules. Although there is no fixed portion for mistresses (even in France), Mr Matthews could have structured his ownership of the chateau differently, in order to get around the French succession rules. It is sensible to make a Will in the jurisdiction in which your property is situated. This will make administration of your foreign estate easier for your beneficiaries. However, it is important to make sure the foreign Will is made in conjunction with your UK Will so as to ensure that one does not revoke the other, that both Wills are structured efficiently for tax purposes and that

“ALTHOUGH THE METEOROLOGICAL CLIMATE IN YOUR DREAM LOCATION MAY BE BETTER THAN HERE, IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING EUROPE, THE ECONOMIC ONE MAY NOT BE”

both work together to ensure the right people benefit from the worldwide estate overall. Although Rickerbys can advise on the law of England and Wales only, we are experienced in advising clients with assets in different countries and working with local advisers to ensure the client’s ownership is structured efficiently. Donna was appointed as Chief Executive of Cheltenham Festivals in 2006. Heading up one of the leading cultural organisations in the country, with all four festivals boasting combined ticket sales in excess of 150,000, she is certainly not short of responsibility. However, cool, calm and collected, Donna is bursting with ideas to promote creativity within the town. “I have known festivals all of my life and was always immensely impressed with the festivals that we hold here in Cheltenham. I could see how much potential they had. Following a role at the University of Gloucestershire, I came to the festivals in 2001 to help to organise the Science Festival” Donna explains, “My husband is a Scientist and so this one was particularly close to my heart. During the planning of the Science Festival, I wanted to become increasingly involved and was so happy when it launched in 2002.” Her progression to Chief Executive role happened organically. Following the departure of the Head of Fundraising, Donna saw the opportunities that lay ahead and embraced the role. “After this, the Chief Executive left and I became Head of Festivals on a job share basis. I quickly caught the bug for the festivals and saw it as my duty to make them the very best that they could possibly be”.

Donna has certainly succeeded, with the festivals generating £5.2 million for the local economy and creating some 139 jobs. The positive economic impact on the town is immense, as well as providing us all with fantastic events to attend right on our doorstep. The festivals provide a huge boost in tourism to the town. Donna is keen to develop a central hub for creativity within the town. “The world has changed and we all live in a constantly evolving environment. We can’t simply do the same thing each year, but I love this challenging side and am surrounded by a fantastic team to help me to come up with new ideas each year,” Donna says. “My vision for the future is to make the festivals even more cutting edge in style and to develop a centre in Gloucestershire for our creative industries. Bristol and Bath are home to many creative hubs and I think it would be great to pursue this in our town.” This month’s festival is certain not to disappoint its attendees. “We’re very excited about the speakers that we have

this year”, Donna says. “It just keeps on getting better and that’s thanks to our sponsors and voluntary board as well. The festivals hold a special place in people’s hearts and that’s what keeps visitors returning year after year.” “ I have a fantastic working relationship with our Chairman, Peter Bond, and he is an incredibly inspiring person to work with.” Donna says. “I would encourage people to always grab anything that looks like a good opportunity! It can be life changing”. CS

The Changing Face of

TWEED Today, British Tweed is well known throughout the world, with famous names such as Harris Tweed widely promoting their products and designers using tweed in exciting, new and innovative ways. Our home-grown tweeds are considered to be the best in the world; with many being made by hand in small quantities, by craftsmen and women in the far-flung corners of the British Isles. Going back in time, it was middle class Edwardian Britain that took tweed to its heart and made famous the moisture resistant & durable fabrics, long before the fashion industry discovered its versatility. Traditionally tweed is thought of as a rather dull, heavy and itchy fabric in green or brown (with all shades in between), worn by the aristocracy and gamekeepers whilst enjoying country pursuits. In fact, many of us conjure up pictures of the Royal Family enjoying their leisure time at Balmoral. However, tweed has recently undergone a resurgence with the addition of new

colours and lighter weight fabrics, including the addition of cashmere and wool blends, which are appropriate for our modern lifestyle. At the same time many people are keen to support niche businesses and actively shun cheap products that are ‘made in China’. Artisan products are becoming highly sought after and the tide is turning on mass produced chain store clothes which are badly made in low quality fabrics suited to the ‘throwaway’ society and lacking individuality. Environmentally friendly production methods are desirable and those with a conscience can rest at ease as these versatile garments can last for many years and have a timeless elegant style. Tweed garments and accessories have recently become high fashion with companies such as Nike incorporating Harris Tweed into their footwear

ranges and Ness making beautiful accessories such as bags and wellies using colourful tweed. Many now spend their weekend enjoying the countryside and want to wear well fitting and comfortable clothes – gone are the days of settling for second best. But tweed is also suitable for wear in the city with light weight fabrics that breathe. Suit the Country has recently launched its made-tomeasure range for both men and women, blending modern technology to manufacture one-off garments to fit all shapes and sizes following the trend for quality fit and timeless elegance – county with a fresh, modern twist. So for those of us that love natural fabric but want to wear something soft and comfortable we now have plenty of choice and as a result, we can be assured that the future for tweed is looking bright. Sheriff of Gloucester

At the end of September, a posse of Sheriffs (yes, that is the right phrase!) descended upon Gloucester. The City is one of only fifteen towns and cities in England and Wales to have maintained the role of Sheriff. Other Cathedral cities like Lincoln and Norwich are amongst the number, as are smaller towns like Carmarthen and Haverfordwest. Robin Hood fans will be pleased to know that there is still a Sheriff of Nottingham! The term Sheriff is derived from the phrase “Shire Reeve” when a “Reeve” administered a town or city on behalf of the Crown. The Sheriff was originally the agent of Royal jurisdiction in Gloucester. He presided over the local courts, he had powers of summons and distraint, he held prisoners and collected fines and taxes. The position, in Gloucester at least, is now combined

with the role of Deputy Mayor and is purely ceremonial. In fact, the role of Sheriff is much older than that of the Mayor. The roots of the Sheriff of Gloucester stretch back to the early 1200s, whereas the office of Mayor was created by the charter granted to the City in 1483 by Richard III. The reason the Sheriffs gathered in Gloucester was for the Annual Weekend of the National Association of City and Town Sheriffs in England and Wales (NACTSEW). The organisation was founded in Gloucester in 1984 when the then Sheriff, Councillor Andrew Gravells, called together his counterparts from other towns and cities to form the Association. Andrew, still a councillor in Gloucester, was the Association’s first Chairman, is now its Life President and has seen the organisation grow from strength to

strength. Every year since that initial get-together, serving and former Sheriffs meet up in one of the places that still maintain this historic office. This year it was, once again, Gloucester’s turn. Our visitors held their Annual Meeting in Blackfriars Priory, toured the historic parts of the city and processed through the city centre to a Cathedral Service on the Sunday morning. I was fortunate to serve as the Sheriff of Gloucester in 2002-3 and had a memorable year. I got used to the jokes - my colleagues put a Sheriff ’s star on my desk and people would sing “I shot the Sheriff ” whenever I walked into a pub holding a karaoke night! Together with Pam Tracey as Mayor, we opened the GL1 Leisure Centre, attended the opening of the new Oxstalls Campus of the University of Gloucestershire, had a trip on board HMS Gloucester and, most memorably of all, welcomed Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh to Gloucester for the Maundy Service. Pam and I brought back the Annual Civic Charity Ball. And I reintroduced the Sheriff ’s Assize of Ale – a very quirky charity pub crawl where everyone dresses in medieval costume – which has, over the years, raised thousands for good causes. I regard the civic role of a councillor as an important part of the job. I know not everyone shares that view. Some people feel that we should just get on with making sure the bins are emptied, the streets are clean and the council tax is kept down. But, particularly in a historic city like Gloucester, putting on your robes and ceremonial hat to attend the Annual Civic Service, Remembrance Sunday or the opening of the Three Choirs Festival is, in my view, important too. Supporting the non-partisan roles of Mayor and Sheriff help to maintain some dignity in local government. Keeping the office of Sheriff has made Gloucester part of an exclusive club. NACTSEW exists, amongst other things, to maintain the historic office of Sheriff. If you value your history and your traditions, as we do in Gloucester, that’s an objective you can’t fail to agree with. CS

Instead of call centres, we offer everyday access to a one-to-one point of contact – a dedicated local account manager – whether face-to-face, by direct line, email or mobile phone. Handelsbanken has been independently ranked as being top for satisfaction and loyalty for the last three years by both our corporate and individual banking customers. PEPPERED PINEAPPLE MARGARITA

Presents the cocktail of the month...

The Margarita story

There are many stories but the most known of all the historical claims behind the Margarita cocktail originates in 1948. A fabulous hostess and Dallas socialite, Margarita Sames, hosted a pool side Christmas party at her holiday home in Acapulco, Mexico. That evening she mixed tequila with Cointreau and lime juice. The result was a success among her guests and quickly travelled through the elite groups in Texas and soon to Hollywood under the name of Margarita. Ingredients:

50ml Black Pepper infused Tequila 25ml Agave Syrup

25ml Pineapple Juice 25ml Lime Juice 0.5g Chilli Sugar

1 Lime Wedge for garnis Method:

• Rub half the rim of your margarita glass with lime juice and dip into the saucer of sugar.

• Grind a dried red chilli and mix with granulated sugar in a saucer.

• Strain into your glass and garnish with the lime wedge. Enjoy!

• Infuse 5 crushed black peppercorns per 100ml of Tequila for 3 days.

• Put all remaining ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake shake shake.

interview

A real benefit… Eric Barton meets up with Gloucester Rugby’s Nick Wood I hate difficult decisions. You know the kind of thing; save the World, don’t save the World, curry or a Chinese? There’s a gossamer thin line between doing the right thing for yourself and others around you…and dropping the proverbial clanger. The Gloucester Rugby loose head prop, Nick Wood has just embarked on his benefit year. It’s a twelve month sojourn that celebrates his unique qualities that sets him apart from his friends and colleagues in the Cherry and Whites, flags up his passion for local charities and provides Nick with a unique way of putting something back into local rugby. Losing a loved one is horrendous. It’s as simple as that. As a ten year old boy Nick Wood lost his mum to breast cancer and in a sense that loss proved ultimately to be his epiphany. The focus and determination to survive this kind of grief is hard to come by and it was rugby that channelled his natural aggression and strength, enabling him to move forward in his life. Applying himself to his studies at Radley College, Nick Wood set his sights on a languages degree at Oxford. It is for many, a lifelong dream to be able to study amongst the dreaming spires and venerable corridors of academia at Brasenose College, Oxford. A cognitive wish that Nick Wood would eventually turn his back on. Whilst at School (Radley College), Coach Richard Greed played a huge part in pushing Nick towards being chosen for Oxfordshire under 18’s and then onto a place representing the South West. England beckoned. A six-week tour to Canada, Australia and New Zealand followed. It beggars belief that you could manage to achieve all this and still be studying. Nick Wood comments, ‘it was a tough first year at Oxford but I managed to get through it’. At this point the Cherry and Whites were knocking at OCTOBER 2012

his door. Nick goes onto say, ‘it’s like having a bag of sweets. You’ve got everything you’ve ever dreamt of and now it’s time to cast one aside’. Some decisions had to be made. The Kingsholm bug got a firm grip on Nick Wood and he departed Oxford for a career in rugby that has made him one of the most formidable forwards in the Premiership. The benefit year is a celebration of everything that’s great about the rugby community and his enduring selfsacrifice to club, supporters and the sport he transparently loves. Nick further commented,’ I was approached by a number of fans and friends who wanted to put the benefit year together’. The benefit year committee has also nominated two charities; Maggie’s, which is the walk in cancer centre in Cheltenham and The National Star College. Nick is very much a ‘local lad’ and lives in Gloucester with his wife Kate. He goes onto to further say,’ we

just loving love living in and around the Cotswolds. It gives me the chance to meet Gloucester fans and to also enjoy the stunning local countryside’. Outside rugby Nick loves aviation and fast cars. After a visit to Castle Bromwich (where they built the Spitfire) Nick got the flying bug and said.’ If I didn’t have a career in rugby I’d love to fly for a living’ Nick Woods’ benefit year has hot bubbling curry at its core. It’s a unique way of Nick going ‘on tour’ to twelve local rugby clubs, meet fans, have a curry and say thanks. There is the odd black tie event planned, but Nick’s committee also wanted something that would be more accessible for everybody. So you see, some difficult choices are often made for the right reasons and I can’t think of a time that Nick Wood dropped even the ball, never mind a clanger. Welcome Aboard, “It was the magic of the FA Cup that took me to Cheltenham in the eighties. John Murphy was manager and the club were preparing for a first round tie against Wolves who were then top of the old fourth division. I was working for ITV Central Sport and the focus was on the Robins as the non leaguers. John was working at GCHQ and borrowing ideas from the TV drama of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy we shot a spoof secret agent film around Montpellier and then the ground pretending he was on a special mission. The camera closed in as he drew a top secret file from his office cabinet only to reveal a scouting report on the Wolves. I can remember the team were training on the pitch under one floodlight - how times have changed. The arrival of Andy Gray was another story we filmed and after that we called in from time to time but it wasn't until the rise of the super Robins under Steve Cotterill that Whaddon Road became a home from home. The warmth and welcome from everybody at the club was second to none and on the road to Wembley there was such an air of excitement around the whole town. Steve and his team along with Paul Baker and his team were a pleasure to work with and what a ride it was to the league and the play-offs. I've been lucky in my life as a journalist to walk and talk with some of the greats and report on World Cups, Wembley Finals, League Championship glory and nights in Europe to remember with the likes of Aston Villa but one of the games that come to me time and time again is when Cheltenham beat Yeovil at Whaddon Road to seal promotion to the Football League. It was one of those I was there moments and when the whistle went I can still see Steve Cotterill sink to his knees on the touchline with everybody piling on top - what a night , what a party and what a team”. Gaining promotion to the Football League is an incredible achievement for any club but just what was it like watching the Robins’ spectacular rise into the professional ranks, 13 years ago? “In a word - unbelievable. I've always said that if someone back in the eighties OCTOBER 2012

Tim Russon

An introduction to the newest addition to the Cheltenham Town Football Club Board of Directors... offered a wager on Cheltenham being an established league team one day you would have laughed long and loud - no chance. So to see them rise and be lucky enough to report and film on the way has been something very special. It's been great fun too. The club have always been so warm with their welcome and so willing to open the doors and their minds to lots of ideas. For a documentary I can remember every player, every director and every member of staff turned out for a giant team picture on the pitch. We've had Whaddney in town buying sweets, an opera singer performing in honour of the Robins in Imperial Gardens, John Ward and his players dressing up as pantomime dames at the Everyman, the team joining in with the tradition of FA Cup cakes and lots more. On a serious note what has been achieved over the years has been amazing and you only have to stand and look around the ground to see for yourself how far the club have come in a relatively short time”. “Cheltenham Town has rightly always enjoyed a good reputation and been well respected both in the local community and the wider world of football and going forward we have to build as many partnerships and forge as many friendships as possible. The club has always enjoyed strong support from the local business world which is much appreciated and greatly valued and the key now is how we can help each other. Cheltenham Town and professional football is a shop window - a showcase for local businesses to use to promote themselves while the club needs as much support as possible to grow too. The name of Cheltenham Town and the football league brand travels and is transmitted around the globe day by day, week by week. Working together and building partnerships can bring rewards for everybody - sporting success lifts

commerce and community in so many ways. Within reason the answer from Cheltenham Town has to be yes to what local business needs from us .The Abbey Business Stadium and the backdrop of professional football is a great place both to encourage business and to enjoy. On a match day our sponsorship lounges and boxes are something to be seen and the quality of service and food is second to none. When the whistle blows and the ground is empty we have modern and stylish meeting rooms and conference areas. Whaddon Road is a ground for all occasions. Sponsorship, advertising, entertaining, meeting, networking, promoting or just enjoying - we aim to do it all for local business”. “First and foremost it's vital the club shows itself off on the pitch. Manager Mark Yates reached for the stars last season by taking the team to the play-offs and by playing entertaining and winning football - fans and fame will follow. The key words are information and communication - we have to make sure that everyone in town and in the county knows what's happening. The team's success will draw people in - but there are so many other aspects of the club which need shouting about from the rooftops. There's the Community Trust which is working wonders with its coaching and education programme which highlights the good that football clubs such as Cheltenham Town do”. “My personal ambition is to be part of the great team that is Cheltenham Town and I guess the aim as ever is to work hard and do my best. As to the future we want supporters to have fun and enjoy following their team - for local people to have pride in their local club and for the players to be rewarded for their hard work and talent. Most of all we want the club to keep smiling”. CS Visit www.ctfc.com for more news.

“GRASSROOTS SPORT NEEDS FUNDING YEAR ON YEAR FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME TO DEVELOP AN ONGOING SPORT ETHOS AMONGST THE YOUNGER GENERATION”

150 COTSWOLD STYLE

Former Cheltenham Town football star Shane Duff discusses funding in sport following the Olympics Following on from the Olympics success story it has proved that investment at elite level can return medals and inspire people to take up sport. But immediately after the games, sports were warned that funding will be cut before the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. Is this the right thing to do I ask? “There’s no point funding sports that are not going to qualify,” said sports minister Hugh Robertson. “We will fund any sport where we think there is a realistic chance of a medal in Rio or in the 2020 Games”. I can see the logic in this as the public would go crazy if millions of pounds are invested with no return, but I also see the flip side argument. Critics insist that investment is needed to develop Britain’s less popular sports to allow Britain to compete at international level. So what do the public want? There are shouts for an Olympic legacy and longevity in sport participation on all levels but there simply isn’t enough money to do this. It all relies on funding from government sources to improve facilities and accessibility. If the vast amounts of money was taken from elite sport and invested at grass roots level it may help get more people involved in sport for longer periods, but in my opinion, will never happen. £508million is to be invested in elite sport by the next Olympic Games. If this was passed down to grassroots sport, there would be no measurable return (medals) within 4 years to

show the investment is worthwhile. I don’t believe the public would allow it to happen. Grassroots sport needs funding year on year for a long period of time to develop an ongoing sport ethos amongst the younger generation. Also it may not be enough. The £508 million will be directed at hundreds of performers, where at grassroots level, there are so many more people to reach. I feel a lot of it is guess work. Lord Coe, organising committee chairman of London 2012, has urged politicians to invest heavily in elite sport, insisting that achievements by Team GB’s medal winners will drive grassroots participation, despite little evidence from previous Games to support the theory. Like I said, it’s guess work!! Fast forward a year and the Olympics will sadly be only a memory. He went on to say “You can never spend too much on elite sport. It will always be the greatest driver of sporting participation and we should be unashamed about that. Those British moments, those international moments that we’ve seen in those venues will do more than anything else to inspire people to take up sport.” I don’t know where is best to invest money. The Olympic success is so inspiring but the answer is so hard to find long term. Everyone will have their opinion and I’m guessing it will take a lot of money and a lot of years to find out more. fitness

Know your body better This month, Personal Trainer Jodie Hart answers all of your questions about fitness and nutrition... ‘Help! I eat unhealthy snacks’

I’m out and about all day with work and often grab food on the go and snack on unhealthy things. How can I eat better? When you’re busy and on the go, it’s easy to believe you haven’t got time to eat properly. It just takes a bit of planning in advance. If you know you’re not going to have time to stop for lunch you could make something healthy to take with you such as a flask of soup, a sandwich or a smoothie and take a banana and a small container of nuts to snack on.

Q A

Q&A

The fact you feel starving could be due to not eating enough food or the right mix of foods before your workout. It also may be making your workouts less effective because you don’t have enough energy to workout properly. Eating healthily is important for your body’s defences and its ability to heal and get stronger. Muscles need protein to get stronger and your body needs carbohydrates to fuel your workouts so aim to include foods like wholemeal pasta, wholemeal rice, chicken, fish and fruit and vegetables into your diet. Aim to have this meal no longer than two hours before your workout and then have a snack such as an apple, yoghurt or some nuts around 30 minutes before you train. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout. Then eat within an hour of training as this is the best time for your body to make the best use of the food you eat and give you more energy for the rest of the day and for the next day.

A

RECLAIM YOUR LUNCH HOUR If you feel there is never enough time in the day, make the most of your lunch hour and at the same time get fit. Not only does working through your lunch make you less productive in the afternoon, but you will feel more fatigued more stressed and won’t be able to work as effectively. So do yourself a favour and take your lunch break! Club together with your colleagues and book a personal training session in your lunch hour! we could either take over your meeting room or meet in the park or you could come to the gym in Cheltenham where I PT. You will all see some great results plus feel more energized for the rest of the afternoon.

‘What exercise would suit me’

I find gyms intimidating but don’t like exercising on my own. How can I find something that works for me? If you find the gym intimidating is it because you don’t feel confident with what you are doing and need some help working out what to do to hit your goals. A non-intimidating option could be to try a one to one PT session with me. We could then work on a series of exercises that will help you to see amazing results and you can do them knowing you are doing the right thing! You don’t need to be a member of a gym, there are several options we can discuss, either in a gym where I PT, in

Q A

‘How should I eat around exercise?’

I always feel starving after working out. I don’t eat a heavy meal for two hours before my workouts, but then often end up eating lots late at night, which can’t be good for me. What should I do?

the park or at your home. If this option is not for you, you could try coming along to one of my bootcamp classes where you can join other people who have similar goals to yourself. I have a 10 week course starting on 3rd October which could work perfectly for you. If you would like more information on this then call me on 07787 561 303 or email me at Jodie@hartfitness.co.uk CS

The Mare’s beginning to get up and as they come to the line, she’s made it, Dawn Run has won it” Sir Peter O’Sullivan, 13th March 1986

A misty March day at Prestbury Park in the mid-eighties played out a scene that instantly became part of horse racing legend. The mare Dawn Run, had won the Champion Hurdle two years previously. On this occasion she was sent off the 15/8 favourite to win Steeplechasing’s ultimate prize. At the last she appeared beaten, seemingly booked for third place. All of a sudden, running up that famous hill in the shadow of the winning post, the mare began to make up ground. That momentum produced a roar from the crowd that nearly uprooted the pylons on Cleeve Hill. As Dawn Run passed the post in first place; her victorious Jockey punched the air in jubilation. That man was Jonjo O’Neill, it is this particular day he nominates as the best of his riding career. Twenty six years later, Jonjo is in his eleventh year as master of Jackdaws Castle. Regarded as one of the best training establishments in the country, it is sheer paradise for the Racehorse which is set in 500 acres of beautiful Cotswold countryside. A mere twelve miles separates Jackdaws Castle from Cheltenham’s hallowed turf. It is on that field of dreams that Jonjo rode nine Festival winners which included two Gold Cups and two Champion Hurdles. To date Jonjo has had twenty-one Cheltenham Festival victories as a Trainer. The most recent being Synchronised who under seventeen times Champion Jockey A.P McCoy won this year’s Gold Cup. The little horse

with the big white face went from handicapper to Grade One hero. Sadly, jubilation turned to tragedy when Synchronised lost his life in the Grand National, four weeks after his finest hour. In 2010 Don’t Push It provided Jonjo with a win in the Grand National, the race that had always eluded him as a jockey. This year Sunnyhillboy came agonisingly close to landing him a second Grand National. Ridden by Richie Mclernon, the duo went down by the shortest of margins - a nose on the line to winner Neptune Collonges. A model of consistency in staying chases; Sunnyhillboy had previously won the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. He is currently on his way back to full health after an operation for a tendon injury, all being well we will see him again line up in Liverpool on April

6th. Stablemate Alfie Sherrin who was the first of Jonjo’s trio of Cheltenham Festival winners this year is also likely to be heading to the Grand National. Jackdaws Castle is rich in both human and equine talent. Established stable stars such as the 2010 and 2011 Ryan Air Chase winner Albertas Run along with Grade Two wining hurdler Get Me Out Of Here are joined by up and coming names such as Shutthefrontdoor who has been victorious in three of his bumpers, Reportedly he goes chasing next year and is definitely one for the notebook. Another who has taken my eye is Listen And Learn, winner of a bumper at Bangor last time out. CS

162 COTSWOLD STYLE

Well, the summer holidays are truly over. We are already so ensconced in the school routine, it almost feels like they never happened. That is, until the moment I go into the kid’s bedrooms. OMG. It is like we’ve been burgled by eighty drunk students who only had fifteen minutes to find something really small. Someone – or something – with vicious tendencies towards my state of mind has blasted in and destroyed any semblance of order or peace. And ability to see any of the carpet. Having started the attempt at clean up (an apparently FEEBLE effort that looked like nothing had occurred when in fact I spent an entire day moving things from a to b and b to c and c to d…) I have had to accept the fact that I will need to dedicate a collective SIXTY ONE hours to properly restoring order. This time value has been calculated by the level of impact my already invested seven hours had on the carnage. Not much. I can’t even be bothered to chastise myself for letting things get this bad in the first place… and if one more person ‘helpfully’ suggests I get the kids to do it themselves, I’ll punch them. The little darlings have been doing all the tidying on their own. That is a major contributor to the massacre. My seven year old daughter is very good at tidying up; once EVERY item of clothing and EVERY single toy (and there are many) is out, it is probably about time to put them away… ALL in the same place… and when that one drawer is full we can continue trying to get everything in it for another half a day and then give up. Clothes are then folded into teeny squares and placed on top of each other in a ‘leaning tower’ style, wherever they happen to be – bathroom, landing, dog’s bed etc. But they ARE folded, mummy. I start with a whirlwind like

tendency… rapidly sweeping through the house gathering up child related objects that appear to have settled in the wrong room. This usually involves around three hundred trips up and down the stairs and the discovery of twelve loads of washing. By now, the whirlwind has reduced to more of a light breeze. And it’s probably time to help with homework, cook dinner, eat it and wash up afterwards. Wine inevitably follows this which further reduces the light breeze to Mill Pond level. The likelihood of having another imminent free day – that doesn’t include going to work, doing the shopping, cleaning the bathrooms etc is… well… nil. So by the next time the whirlwind and the empty seven hours combine, we are pretty much back to square one and the swooping stair climbing, laundry discovering routine has to recommence. ‘Doing the children’s rooms’ has now become PROJECT territory; much like decorating. Vacuuming the carpet, cleaning the kitchen, washing the socks and all that daily faff is normal humdrum , regular stuff, but decorating – well that requires time off work, possibly some professional help and at least six months’ worth of planning. How my offspring’s bedrooms have managed to become so toxic I need half a year and a house doctor to get them back to normal, I’m not entirely sure. Nevertheless, the thought of removing it off the ‘To Do Today’ list and onto the ‘To Do This Year’ list is enormously therapeutic. The pesky kids say this proves the answer lies in attitude not housework – relax, shut the door and fret less about the mess and allofasudden it is not as bad as first imagined. And then they are free, once again, to go and play dress up with ten friends and every item of clothing in the entire house. CS OCTOBER 2012
