HAUNTED GLOUCESTERSHIRE Author Rupert Matthews – Logaston Press

Equally certain is the identity of the white lady of Dover’s Hill, one Beatrice Maurice who was born in Littleworth around 1620 into a family of staunchly puritan protestant religion. When the English Civil War broke out, the Maurice family unsurprisingly sided with Parliament against King Charles I. This was a potentially dangerous move as the lord of the manor, Sir Roger Littleworth, was for the king. However, Sir Roger and Beatrice knew each other from school, and he promised no harm to her or her family. The dashing, youthful Sir Roger rode off to fight for the king, while Beatrice and her brother John stayed at home, but sent as much money as they could afford to support Parliament. By the time the war ended with the execution of King Charles in 1649 and the defeat of his son, the future Charles II, at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, things had changed at Littleworth. The Maurice family were in high favour with officialdom, being granted profitable positions and generally lording it over all and sundry. Sir Roger, in contrast, was on the run, wanted by the new government for this support of Charles at the battle of Worcester.

www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com

The months passed, and the neighbourhood was soon abuzz with talk of a dashing highwayman mounted on a flossy and clearly expensive pure black charger. The man invariably wore a mask, but was elegantly dressed in the finest clothing decorated with silver buttons, and carried a silver-hilted sword, backed up by pistols decorated with mother of pearl and silver chasing. Almost inevitably he became know as the Silver Highwayman. Unlike many such criminals, this rogue proved to be popular in the area for he never robbed locals, preying only on rich outsiders. Late on evening the Silver Highwayman held up a coach in which was travelling young Beatrice Maurice. Although the horseman wore his habitual mask, she recognised him instantly from his voice as the missing renegade Royalist, Sir Roger Littleworth. Guessing that he was being given shelter by local Royalists, Beatrice set out to track down her old playmate. She soon found him and before long the two were deeply in love.

On calm evenings, when she could get away from her home, Beatrice would climb to the top of Dover’s Hill and tie a white cloth to a particular bush. It could be seen from miles around and if Sir Roger was about he would ride up to the hilltop to meet his love. The pair made plans to flee the country, just as soon as the Silver Highwayman had gathered enough loot to pay their fare to France. The tragedy struck. John Maurice realised his sister was sneaking off regularly and followed her one night. He saw what transpired and was filled with anger, both at his sister’s treachery – as he saw it – and at the carefree manner in which his old enemy rode the land. The next evening, John locked his sister in a storeroom, rounded up a group of local toughs and climbed Dover’s Hill. There he tied a white cloth to the bush and waited. Sure enough, up rode Sir Roger. This time he was attacked by the thugs, rather than sinking into the arms of his beloved. The dashing highwayman was dragged off to Gloucester to be tried and hanged for treason and for highway robbery. Poor, distraught Beatrice was not allowed to visit him before his execution. Over the months that followed she was often to be seen wandering disconsolately over Do-

ver’s Hill. And one morning she was found there dead and cold. Ever since, her ghost has appeared on the hill on calm, summer’s evenings. She walks quietly, looking up every now and then as if hoping to see somebody approaching. But nobody ever does, and she fades from view. She is seen so often that the area where she appears is now know as White Lady’s Gate. The site is today better known for the Cotswold Olympics than for its ghost. It was in 1612 that Robert Dover transformed the age-old Whitsuntide feast held here into a grand festival of sport. Some of the events were modelled on those of Ancient Greece, but others were distinctly local. Two cheeses were rolled down the steep hill and were won by the first man to run down and lay hold of them. While a cake was won by the man who cold pull the ugliest face. A large bag of snuff was awarded to the old woman who could keep up an unbroken stream of chattering gossip for the longest period of time. By comparison, the set of ribbons awarded to the best dancer seems positively normal. The festivities continue to this day.

Available exclusively on www.theflamboyant. co.uk, LLB’s Pink Flamingo Racy Rosé is made from grapes grown and harvested in Sussex: predominantly Bacchus and Rondo varieties, expertly blended to create a rosé fizz with a gorgeous pale pink hue and a light red fruit filled flavour and naturally low in sugar. The Flamboyant Wine Company produces a selection of limited edition wines and spritzer’s, featuring innovative labels designed in-house.

ABOUT LLB DESIGN

“We will always use English suppliers when we can to support the blossoming English wine industry whilst keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible and consumers have told us that they appreciate its low food miles. Our wines are not mass produced, so each line is a limited edition ensuring we maintain high quality and over deliver on price.” “Cans are lighter than bottles and easier to recycle, which significantly decreases the carbon footprint left on the environment during storing, transporting, and distributing. People don’t want to keep giving up quality when buying canned wine to take on gatherings, picnics, or walks – nor should they have to.“ Karen Wheeler, Director of The Flamboyant Wine Company Canned wines chill down more quickly and hold their fizz when opened and are more portable than bottles. Perfect for a celebration for one or two, plus at only £5 for 250ml (two glasses) it means bubbles are not just reserved for special occasions! Canned wine products make for a convenient and easily transportable drink that consumers can enjoy on-the-go and al fresco.

Founded in 1998 by renowned designer, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Llewelyn-Bowen Design has always held an ethos that exceptional design should be democratic, and accessible to all. LLB is, first and foremost, a design agency, and a desire to create has led to their involvement in a truly diverse selection of projects over three decades, from the Blackpool Illuminations and offices in a castle to theatres and restaurants. Best known for Home Interior Design, LLB’s work has been recognised nationally, and continues to make headlines to this day. Their products are sold throughout national retailers in our quest to make your home the loveliest, the most YOU, it can possibly be.

ABOUT THE FLAMBOYANT WINE COMPANY First launched in the summer of 2021 at Hampton Court Flower Show, The Flamboyant range began with our initial Rosé Fizz and Still Rosé cans and we were absolutely thrilled with how it was received. Repeat orders as a result of having the opportunity to present the wines and explain the ethos of the brand in person have been hugely gratifying and confirms that our decision from day one to offer a hi-end high quality product within a price range that was acceptable was right. We have added to that range since then and will be announcing new varieties in the coming months – our incredible Rose and Hibiscus Spritzer is already in production with further rather special innovative creations hot on its heels.

THE BEST REASONS TO BUY A TESLA MODEL 3 We had a chance to test drive and review Tesla’s Model 3

Everyone is making a big deal out of the power of Tesla models, which is why it was such a fantastic opportunity to be able to review the Model 3 to find out for myself what they are truly like. This is the smallest and most affordable car Tesla has on offer.

12

www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com

The Model 3 has received a variety of changes, including more efficient tyres and the 18/19” Sports Wheels have been refreshed. If this is not enough, then the Model 3 Performance can now be ordered with 20” Uberturbine wheels. Either way, the grip on these tyres is awesome and they did not disappoint when the car was being tested on the road.

Speaking of it is worth noting how incredible the performance of this model is. The Model 3 Performance is the fastest car in its class, and it is the quickest vehicle I have ever driven so far. It is capable of achieving 0-60 MPH in 3.1 seconds. If you have eaten your lunch before driving this car,you might want to let it settle down before you jump behind the wheel of the Model 3. Though I wasn’t sick, thankfully, the power of this car made me feel like I’d just come off the waltzers at a fayre. I was so stunned that it felt literally breathtaking. Its performance is enhanced by an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution and DualMotor All-Wheel Drive, which also improves the car’s traction in any weather. Tesla has gone to a great deal of effort to boost the Model 3 Performance’s top speed to 162 MPH and added a carbon fibre spoiler and aluminium alloy pedals for maximum handling and improved stability. The Track Mode is unique to the Model 3 Performance and there are also red performance brake calipers.

Furthermore, once the Model 3 has been fully charged, it provides up to 360 miles of range, and that is enough to get drivers from Edinburgh to Exeter, for example. Not bad! The boot is another reason why the Model 3 is designed for long car journeys like the one mentioned above. The new Powerlift Trunk opens at the touch of a button on the boot itself or from the touchscreen or the Tesla app. With 425 litres of boot space, it is very spacious. But the rest of the interior is where it’s at thanks to updates such as a heat pump as seen on the Model Y, which improves the model’s cold weather efficiency. An updated matte black finish replaces the gloss ‘piano’ black finish. With such a luxurious interior and lush seats on top, it is hard ot to feel right at home inside the Model 3. It deserves a 10/10 for comfort.

13

www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com

That feeling is only enhanced by the infotainment. There is a central screen that feels like atelevision and with plenty of entertainment features, the Model 3 is more than ideal for those longer journeys to keep both you and the children entertained throughout. The 15” touchscreen seamlessly integrates media, navigation, communications, cabin control, and vehicle data into one intuitive interface. One of the best things about it is the way it updates your journey when there are roadworks. Funnily enough, all the usual routes from the Tesla dealership in Stratford to Blockley were closed due to roadwords, but thanks to the navigation, it was easy to return to the latter location regardless.

14

www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com

The centre console has been redesigned and it features fixed inductive charging mats for two smartphones wrapped in luxurious microsuede. Two extra high-powered USB-C ports have been included for high-speed device charging. And it just gets even better because of an additional USB-A port in the glove compartment to use for storage devices for Sentry Mode and Dash Cam footage. Indeed, the camera is brilliant when it comes to parking, and it is easy to see what’s behind you. With a focus on safety, eight surround cameras allow for 360-degree vision, while 12 ultrasonic sensors provide detection of surrounding objects. The forward-facing radar enables you to see through heavy rain, fog, dust, and beyond the vehicle ahead. No wonder the Model 3 achieved a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating in every category with the highest score in the Safety Assist tests.

Not only is the car safe but driving feels less burdensome due to Autopilot. Basic Autopilot comes as standard and allows you to steer, accelerate and brake automatically for other vehicles and pedestrians within its lane. The Enhanced Autopilot package provides drivers additional functionality with Autopark, Auto Lane Change, Summon and Navigate on Autopilot. Another option is Full Self- Driving Capability, which includes all the functionality of Basic Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot.

This all sounds rather wonderful, so it is good to know how much this Tesla model costs. The Model Standard Range Plus variant is the cheapest one at £40,990, whilst the Model 3 Long Range costs £48,490. The Model 3 Performance (the one we tested) is the most expensive at £59,990. Tesla have done themselves proud with the Model 3 Performance and they should be pleased with this vehicle. It certainly feels like the future of the automotive industry in this car. If you are looking for an electric car and can afford the Model 3, it is worth considering. ARE YOU S.A.D? Studies have shown 29% adults experience symptoms of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) at this time of year. Dee Swinton from Dorset MIND has some suggestions on staying positive in the darker season.

SAD is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health most of the year exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year. Usually, it’s more common in the winter months, when we experience dark nights and gloomy days. The causes are still not clear,

18

www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com

but there is evidence to suggest reduced sunlight exposure makes us have a decrease in serotonin levels and a lack of vitamin D. It can also increase the production of melatonin, which makes you sleepier. These can result in depressive feelings and low mood.

Symptoms of SAD range in severity, and can include: • Low energy • Anxiety • Low self-esteem and not wanting to see people • Changes in appetite; usually eating more and craving carbohydrates • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions • Feelings of hopelessness and at extreme, suicidal thoughts Here’s our advice for helping you stay positive during the winter months: Get Active – Any movement can boost serotonin, endorphins and other feelgood chemicals in your brain. These will help lift your mood and sleep better, plus look after your physical health. Build exercise into your day if you can, and if you’re able to get outside, you’ll benefit from exposure to vitamin D too! Connect – Speak to your family and friends, this is a key step of the Five Ways to Wellbeing. Reduce your isolation by reaching out and make sure you interact with people regularly – not just via your phone.

Eat Well – For a season that’s known for over-indulgence, we encourage you to get a variety of fruit and vegetables into your diet each day. Eating sugary or processed foods will affect your energy and mood swings. A balanced nutritious diet is essential for maintaining a positive mood and avoiding lows. Don’t forget to hydrate regularly too. Combat Stress – A build up of stress can tip over into a crisis and/or burnout, which should be avoided where possible. Focus on what you can control, break tasks down into manageable chunks and seek help if you need it. Relaxation techniques are all beneficial for your wellbeing. Create Joy – Bring some joy into your life every day if you can. Incorporate more of the things you enjoy doing and it will help keep your stress levels under control. Treatment and support - Always seek the advice of your GP as your first step. SAD itself has a choice of ways to help treat it; Light therapy exposes you to bright lights that mimic outdoor light, talking therapies can help, as can medication and social prescription solutions such as eco-therapy. Your doctor will recommend the best option for you. Copy courtesy of The Blackmore Vale & Dorset Mind.

Gloucestershire and Worcestershire Mind offers low-cost online counselling and eco therapy as part of a range of 1-2-1 and group support for adults. Find out more by visiting: https://www.sgmind.org.uk 19

THE CHILDSWICKHAM INN, BROADWAY RESTAURANT REVIEW ‘A brilliant pub worth visiting.’

This inn is a beautiful little gem located in the

my fiancée, being true to her vegetarian diet,

The Childswickham Inn, Broadway Road,

pesto, halloumi, spiced gordal olives, stuffed

North Cotswold village of Childswickham Broadway, WR12 7HP.

Considering my fiancée and I visited The

Childswickham Inn on a cold winter’s day,

stepping into the venue warmed us up, not just in the literal sense of the word, but the

staff are so warm and friendly that they make you feel welcome from the minute you enter the pub.

But it is not just the amazing staff that make The Childswickham Inn a brilliant pub worth visiting. The food is just out of this world. I

had the Devon crab, smoked salmon and

baby caper with Arancini with a chive butter

sauce for £7.50, and my better half ate some halloumi fries with a sweet chilli dip which

cost £6.95. We sampled each other’s dishes and the texture of these foods and the way

they were cooked just left us wanting more. We were so excited for the mains!

Following on from some encouraging

starters, the mains were just incredible. I

ate a pan fried sirloin steak with a tomato,

mushrooms, fries and salad for £24.00, and

26

www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com

sampled a vegetarian mezze with marinated vine leaves, balsamic onions, hummus, and a pitta bread for £14.95. Being the foody

that I am, I soon helped my fiancée with her

sharing plater whilst she nicked a few of my chips, and all I can say is that these mains

were worth waiting for. The steak was juicy and my fiancee’s sharing plater had the

perfect selection of dips and food. How could we not want a dessert after that?

To conclude our worthwhile trip to The

Childswickham Inn, I ate a chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce, and my fiancée

enjoyed a mango, coconut and malibu

crème brulee with shortbread. Both of them cost £7.50 each. My dessert was the best

brownie I have ever had at a pub so far whilst my fiancee’s crème brulee was just fantastic. The Childswickham Inn is a beautiful little

gem located in this North Cotswold village. If

you are travelling through the Cotswolds and

need feeding, I cannot recommend this place enough.

NEED TO USE UP YOUR REMAINING FRUIT? MAKE AN APPLE CHARLOTTE! Apples taste even better in a baked dessert called the apple charlotte. There are numerous types of this but this one is buttery and delicious.

Here are the ingredients needed to make it for four people, according to Rick Stein: 125g butter 350g Bramley apples 350g Cox’s apples Grated lemon zest 8 slices of white bread Custard, clotted cream, or ice cream to serve Method: • Grease a pudding basin with lots of butter, and then peel and slice the apples. Place them in cold water and put them in a saucepan with the sugar, lemon zest and 30g of butter. Cook them using low heat and then beat them with a wooden spoon. Leave them to cool whilst preheating the oven to 200C/fan 180C. •

Each slice of bread should then be dipped into melted butter, and then line a pudding basin with about 75 per cent, or three quarters, of the slices of bread. Leaving no space, pack them in closely. Spoon in the cooled apple puree and cover with the outstanding buttered pieces of bread. After that, push them down.

Bake the pudding for about half an hour, but ensure the pudding is covered with foil first. Remove the foil and bake for an additional eight to 10 minutes until the top is golden brown. Once it has rested, serve the pudding with custard, clotted cream, or ice cream. Your choice!
