Stanway viaduct, British engineering at its finest… The impressive Stanway Viaduct is an imposing 50 foot high feature on the Honeybourne Line, spanning the cotswold countryside valley with its 15 majestic arches leading to the famous Toddington station. During the 1950s express trains running between Wolverhampton, the West Country and Wales would have crossed the viaduct reaching speeds of up to 60 mph. The last time paying passengers crossed the viaduct was in 1968 on diesel trains that operated between Leamington and Gloucester. The service finally came to an end on 23 March 1968 and the black-and-white picture taken by David Aldred on that last day, shows the train powering across the viaduct towards its Gloucester-bound destination.

The Flamboyant Wine Company produces a selection of limited edition wines and spritzer’s, featuring innovative labels designed in-house.
ABOUT LLB DESIGN
“We will always use English suppliers when we can to support the blossoming English wine industry whilst keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible and consumers have told us that they appreciate its low food miles. Our wines are not mass produced, so each line is a limited edition ensuring we maintain high quality and over deliver on price.” “Cans are lighter than bottles and easier to recycle, which significantly decreases the carbon footprint left on the environment during storing, transporting, and distributing. People don’t want to keep giving up quality when buying canned wine to take on gatherings, picnics, or walks – nor should they have to.“ Karen Wheeler, Director of The Flamboyant Wine Company Canned wines chill down more quickly and hold their fizz when opened and are more portable than bottles. Perfect for a celebration for one or two, plus at only £5 for 250ml (two glasses) it means bubbles are not just reserved for special occasions! Canned wine products make for a convenient and easily transportable drink that consumers can enjoy on-the-go and al fresco.
Founded in 1998 by renowned designer, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Llewelyn-Bowen Design has always held an ethos that exceptional design should be democratic, and accessible to all. LLB is, first and foremost, a design agency, and a desire to create has led to their involvement in a truly diverse selection of projects over three decades, from the Blackpool Illuminations and offices in a castle to theatres and restaurants. Best known for Home Interior Design, LLB’s work has been recognised nationally, and continues to make headlines to this day. Their products are sold throughout national retailers in our quest to make your home the loveliest, the most YOU, it can possibly be.
ABOUT THE FLAMBOYANT WINE COMPANY First launched in the summer of 2021 at Hampton Court Flower Show, The Flamboyant range began with our initial Rosé Fizz and Still Rosé cans and we were absolutely thrilled with how it was received. Repeat orders as a result of having the opportunity to present the wines and explain the ethos of the brand in person have been hugely gratifying and confirms that our decision from day one to offer a hi-end high quality product within a price range that was acceptable was right. We have added to that range since then and will be announcing new varieties in the coming months – our incredible Rose and Hibiscus Spritzer is already in production with further rather special innovative creations hot on its heels.

SPRING ON THE FLOWER FARM Jo Thompson - Wye Valley Flowers
Our Gloucestershire flower farm is bursting with life and colour - a kaleidoscope of daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, muscari, anemones, hellebore and our favourite ranunculus with peonylike petals. Flower farmers, like gardeners, are optimistic by nature – planting bulbs in the autumn, not knowing for certain whether they will be rewarded with any blooms in the spring. Most of our family were born in the month of February and we all look out for snowdrops to indicate the start of spring and the proximity to the birthday season! These nodding messengers announce the worst of the dark days are over and light is returning. It also heralds Mothering Sunday and Easter are approaching, the perfect time to think about buying a bouquet and one of our busiest times of year – but did you know the average bouquet will have travelled over 4,000 miles to get here? British flower growing is having a renaissance and many artisan growers, like ourselves, take a gentler approach to planting and floral design – no plastic packaging, no chemicals or pesticides, no dyes, no floral foam, and no air miles.
10
www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com
The favourite cut flowers at this of time of year tend to be the blousy daffodil British grown, cheap, and cheerful from your local supermarket, and synonymous with spring! For more impressive blooms though, look instead to growers listed on the Flowers from the Farm website, who have been cultivating more subtle and sustainably grown varieties throughout the winter, available in a delicate range of soft and creamy shades of white through to buttery yellows. Also, look for scented varieties in particular such as Thalia and paperwhites - perfect in a simple vase on windowsills or grouped in single stems in narrow vintage jars. Remember spring cut flowers often need a little more attention and tulips particularly will need recutting every few days, as they keep growing above the rest of the arrangement. We don’t tend to favour piercing the stem of tulips as it can lead to bacteria getting in, but if they do flop, wrap them in a newspaper cone for support in clean water overnight, which should elongate the stems again.
11
www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com
Cutting the stems at an angle, like a quill, will also give more surface area for them to draw up water. Don’t recut daffodils if they are in a mixed vase, as they have a poisonous, gloopy sap – instead cut them and leave separately for 24 hours before adding to other types of flowers. We don’t use flower food as it contains bleach, which isn’t a particularly pleasant product for the environment. Spring flowers fresh from a grower, properly conditioned, shouldn’t need anything more than clean water to look great for up to 2 weeks. Finally, let’s talk foliage! There are enough bits of twig and tree strewn across the garden after the earlier storms. Place some in a heavy based vase for an instant feel-good effect. Branches with buds and catkins, such as alder, birch, hazel, willow, elegant magnolia, and hickory are particularly pleasing. These woody stems will muck up the water in your vase though, so refresh regularly and enjoy!

TESLA MODEL 3 LONG RANGE REVIEW Inspired by our last review of a Tesla Model 3, the team at CotswoldXL was chosen to review the new Long Range, which is the latest trim of the Model 3.
16
www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com
For three exciting days, the CotswoldXL team put this impeccable machine through its paces on the roads of the Cotswolds and the Vale of Evesham. It’s fair to say that we were blown away with the magnitude of this fine machine. The Model 3 combines industry-leading powertrain efficiency, aerodynamics and chassis technology to deliver the longest range of any similar electric saloon. The Model 3 provides up to an impressive 360 miles WLTP range for daily travel. This is ideal for those living in the towns and villages , and spend driving time nipping around or fancy a longer trip out of the area…without having to worry about the car running out of battery power unexpectedly. In order to ensure that the battery does not run out of juice, charge the Model 3 at home. Designed and built by Tesla, Superchargers charge the Long Range in minutes as opposed to hours. Superchargers are strategically placed allowing Tesla owners to conveniently charge on most major routes across the UK, which is why driving through the Cotswolds and the Vale of Evesham should be a doddle for drivers. There are a variety of changes, including an updated matt black trim and upgraded efficient tyres. Also, the 18/19-inch Sports Wheels have been stylishly refreshed. It is good to know that the Long Range has decent tyres, making the handling of this car a pleasure to drive… (The Cotswold roads are notoriously poor and littered with potholes, which can appear out of nowhere on the many farming roads). If you need to get any items out of your boot when you arrive at your destination, the new Powerlift Trunk opens at the touch of a button on the boot itself, or from the touchscreen or the Tesla app. The boot is nice and spacious, but not recommended for those who want to take their dogs for a walk with its plush interior.
17
www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com
Speaking of the touchscreen, it is 15-inches and it seamlessly integrates media, navigation, communications, cabin control and vehicle data into one intuitive interface. Tesla models regularly receive over-the-air software updates that add new features, increased performance and enhance existing functionality via Wi-Fi. The updates help make the car more attractive to those who haven’t considered buying a Tesla as they add plenty of music, entertainment and games. The quality of the sound system is incredible. It’s like being in a nightclub inside your own car!
12 ultrasonic sensors provide detection of surrounding objects. The forward-facing radar can see through heavy rain, fog, dust, and beyond the vehicle ahead, helping to prevent accidents by providing simultaneous visibility in every direction. It is reassuring to know that the Long Range achieved a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating in every category. And if you are worried about driving, then the Autopilot advanced safety and convenience features are designed to assist you with the most tiresome parts of driving. Basic Autopilot comes as standard and enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically for other vehicles and pedestrians within its lane. The Enhanced Autopilot package gives drivers extra functionality with Autopark and Auto Lane Change. An additional option is Full Self-Driving Capability, which includes all the functionality of Basic Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot, alongside the latest upcoming features.
Interior updates include a heat pump which improves cold weather efficiency, keeping us toasty for this January Long Range road test. Furthermore, there’s no need to worry about charging your phone as there are two additional high-powered USB-C ports that have been added for high-speed device charging. Also, there is an additional USB-A port in the glove compartment to use for storage devices for Sentry Mode and Dash Cam footage. The quality of the footage was truly stunning and it was hard not to be impressed by it…a real bonus when navigating the Long Range through the infamously tricky roads of the Cotswolds and the Vale of Evesham. The Model 3 has safety in mind thanks to standard active safety features and hardware built to provide visibility that a driver cannot access alone. Eight surround cameras allow for 360-degree vision, while
18
www.cotswoldxlmamagazine.com
But what makes driving the Long Range even better is its performance. According to Tesla, it can zoom from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds. Its top speed is 145mph. The three of us agreed that it is fun to drive on a sunny day in the Cotswolds and/or the Vale of Evesham. Considering price is a common complaint when it comes to EVs, Tesla has made the Long Range a bit more affordable than other electric cars. It costs £49,990. That may still sound like a lot of money to some people, but Tesla deserves credit for trying to ensure that their cars appeal to a broader audience. The all Electric Model 3 Long Range is perfect for people living in this area, and loaded safety features… impressive, Stylish, quick and easy to drive….But don’t just take our word for it – We parked it up in Broadway and asked the locals to have their say on the model.

Having beaten Worcester, Old Halesonians, Gosford All-Blacks and most recently Eton Manor, this fantastic squad of 29 players have every chance of making the final which will be played in a neutral premiership ground later on this spring. Ebony has been playing rugby from a very young age and was a regular at her local club Stow-on-The-Wold before moving on to Cheltenham North’s thriving girls team.

Trainer John Poulton adds, “This is an immense achievement for such a new squad playing together in their first season, and more importantly playing in the biggest national competition available to this age group. Everyone involved at the club is so excited to see these fantastic girls representing us in such a professional way and doing so well. Imagine If they go on to win ! ” Good luck to the Cheltenham North girls rugby team, and especially to our very own Cotswold player, Ebony Dean-Brown.
VAPING, THE NOT SO HEALTHY SMOKING ALTERNATIVE. Vaping has become a national phenomenon, with 3.3 million people in the UK picking up a vape daily. The original purpose of e-cigarettes was to pry individuals off regular cigarettes, with vaping looking like a more promising and healthier option. But now information has surfaced that the effects of vaping can be just as, or even more harmful, than smoking cigarettes. Some early research and studies suggest that vaping e-liquids could potentially have a devastating effect on your lungs, increasing the risk of acute lung disease. The most commonlyreported adverse side-effects of vaping include: coughing, dry mouth and throat, shortness of breath, mouth and throat irritation and headaches.
These studies are made even more concerning when you look at the age groups of vape users. It is said that 20% of all vape users are aged 18-29, but as vaping becomes more popular, individuals are starting younger and younger. Vapes, like cigarettes, contain nicotine, making them just as addictive. But for some individuals this warning of nicotine addiction does not scare them and the lure of following popular culture is much more appealing. The liquid used in e-cigarettes often contains nicotine and artificial flavourings, and there are hundreds of flavours for individuals to choose from. With flavours like ‘Strawberry Custard’ and ‘Lemon Drizzle’, it is easy to see how e-cigarettes are gripping an ever increasing younger demographic. A worrying aspect of this is that there is not enough data to firmly know what the long-term effects of continual vape use is going to have on the human body over a long period of time. Some of the younger vape users do not understand the harmful effects nicotine and e-liquids are having on their health right now, let alone what currently unknown potential complications could arise as a result of continual use in the future. The increase in vape usage is to be expected though, with numerous vape shops located in almost every town and even more in bigger cities. Therefore, are we as a society doing everything we can to protect children from the potential dangers of vaping e-liquids? Or should we be thankful that they opt for the vape and not a lit cigarette? I guess only time will tell…

TOP 10 TIPS TO SURVING UNIVERSITY: Our student writer Izzy Greenlaw gives some welcome advice for students just starting unversity.
Starting university can be overwhelming for anyone, whether you are moving
across the country or going to a university five minutes away. As a recent fresher, here are some top tips I wish that someone had told me before starting uni: 1. Make sure that you are organised
Whether you write a timetable every Sunday

2. Not everyone has the same experience You don’t understand uni life until you are experiencing it. Nothing you have
experienced before can compare to it.
Therefore, if you are not enjoying it, don’t give up right away - just try and adapt to these radical changes to your life.
3. Feeling lonely
This is a very apparent emotion for many,
and some may choose to ignore it, but it is
completely acceptable to feel alone initially. If you have a particular hobby, why not join one
of the university societies? There are hundreds of them!

THE GEORGE AND DRAGON: WHERE DID THE FAMOUS PUB NAME COME FROM? Evesham once had a pub with the name George and Dragon, and there is a pub in Clifton with the same name. With St. George’s Day coming round the corner, now is an appropriate time to revisit this classic pub name’s origins. Saint George is thought to have been born in Turkey during the third century. As a soldier in the Roman army, he refused to denounce his faith and persecute fellow Christians leading to his martyrdom in 303 AD.
The story goes that to stop a dragon from terrorising Dragon Hill in Uffington, Berkshire, the king’s daughter was sacrificed to appease the monster. Disgusted by what he heard; George slayed the dragon by using his sword to slash a vulnerable patch of skin under its arm. King Edward III (1327-1377) made St. George England’s saint, but it was not until Henry VIII’s reign that the St. George’s cross was used as England’s flag. Happy St. George’s Day, folks!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY On Tuesday 8th of March, the world
celebrated International Women’s day,
celebrating all things girl power. This day, which occurs every year, sets out the
achievements of many women all across
the world. This year the key theme revolved around ‘Gender equality for today for a
sustainable tomorrow’, highlighting the
barriers women have to face every day and
in particular, the workplace. The theme urged and challenged individuals to think about
their inclusivity and basis towards females within the workplace.
Every year there is a select group of women who are recognised for their outstanding
contributions to society, from helping tackle important social issues to successful and
inspiring examples of entrepreneurship. Some examples for 2022 include: Reilly Turner- UCLA & Nike footballer, Mikaela Loach- climate
justice activist and Kavya Kopparapu- the
founder of Girls Computing. The Suffragette
Movement is one which many will remember on International Women’s day, as the
individuals that were involved are seen by many as the founders of Women’s Rights
Activism. The Suffragettes fought for the right for women to vote, which was previously only available to men, which therefore paved
the way for better laws and regulations on gender equality.
This day should be celebrated every year,
by remembering and celebrating not only those that changed the course of history for women, but also those who dedicate
their lives to cultivate a more equal and fair society for all.

MOTHERING SUNDAY OR NOT, HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD APPRECIATE YOUR MUM EVERY DAY
Mothering Sunday is about more than just giving your mum a box of chocolates and flowers to say ‘thanks’ for everything she has done for you throughout the year. Here are three reasons why you should show your appreciation for your mum every day: Her love is incomparable: A mother teaches her children every emotion and she is one of your biggest fans in life. She always pushes you to be the very best: They believe in you unreservedly and know you can achieve great things. She tolerates your different phases in life: A no-brainer considering children can scream down a house and then they become teenagers with mood swings. The fun never ends when you are a parent.

With Mother’s Day fast approaching on Sunday 27 March this year, there is no better time to buy your mum a bouquet of flowers to say thanks for everything mums do for us! The tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day started in the Middle Ages as people who had moved away from home returned to their village churches, or ‘mother’ churches back then. Some of these people were as young as ten when they left their homes, so Mothering Sunday became an opportunity for families to reunite, as it is to this day. Furthermore, Mothering Sunday became established as a holiday for servants who were given leave from their employers to visit their mothers. They would gather fresh flowers on their journey home and give them as a gift. This is because motherhood is synonymous with springtime and plants, as the two are representative of life and fertility.
WHERE DID THE HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY COME FROM?
Flowers emanate beauty and purity, attributes many of us associate with our own mums. Also, churches held Mothering Sunday services, where flowers were given out to children to pass on to their mums. Mother’s Day is normally celebrated on the fourth Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent, the dates of which change each year. Chris had a keen interest in Dry Stone walling and attended a course organised by the Dry-Stone Walling Association (DSWA) in 2003, which he has stated was an “extremely well run, interesting and enjoyable weekend”. He then transferred the skills learnt into practising his art at every opportunity until he felt ready to take the plunge and resign from his employed work. Chris was offered an opportunity with Batsford Estate where he continues to work regularly. Thanks to the miles of Dry-stone Walls around the Cotswolds he is keenly sought-after. Chris obtains much of his work through word of mouth. His high standards of craftsmanship have built up a reputation throughout the
