WELCOME MIDE CARTER.

It’s a pleasure to introduce myself as part of the Cotswold XL team.

My name is Mide and I work primarily on the magazine - writing articles, interviewing and general editing and content. I’m really interested in people, all things creative, design, delicious food, nature and anything dog related.

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR.

I love this time of year as autumn drifts into winter in a whirl of golden leaves, squally showers and blazing sunny days - it really is special. I’ve taken up running again and always find it easier in the cooler seasons through the stunning ever-changing scenery, and believe me, I need all the help I can get.

This year is extra special for me as it’s my first issue as editor of the Cotswold XL magazine. My name is Mide (an Irish name pronounced ‘Meeda’) and I’m excited and grateful to be working with such a brilliant team and to be joining the wider Cotswold XL family. I can’t wait to bring you fabulous stories, features and business news from all over the Cotswolds and the Vale.

Over the coming months we will be introducing a number of regular features that we hope will become firm favourites with all of you, as well as telling stories about people and places right on your doorstep.

At CotswoldXL we are keen supporters of local businesses, and we’ll keep you upto-date with news and offers of all these fantastic services in the local area.

In this month’s features you can learn about the delight of Spiders and Red Kites too, and If you’ve ever considered using a landscape designer to redesign your beautiful garden spaces then your in luck... and also fill up on our factoids dotted through-out the magazine.

Most Importantly I can’t wait to meet as many of you as possible. For me, this job is all learning about the people around me and finding out how your worlds work - I really do consider it an absolute privilege.

If you have a story to share, an idea for a feature, business news you’d love to get out there or anything else please do get in touch at: midecarter@gmail.com

And have a wonderful Autumn.

The ultimate Cotswold wine tasting experience.

We’ll tell you our story...

Little Oak Vineyard is a beautiful vineyard located in the small Cotswold market town of Chipping Campden. Since planting their first vines in 2005 the vineyard has gone on to produce high quality white wine, award-winning sparkling wine and a superb brandy.

Owned by Steve and managed by Gemma, who also hosts the tours, their most recent accolade is being awarded Gold in the 50 Greatest Sparkling Wines of the World competition. Why not book a tour and share our amazing stories!

The ultimate wine tasting experience…

Give your taste buds a treat with a vineyard tour and wine tasting at the award-winning Little Oak Vineyard, where you’ll sample their high-quality white wine, award-winning sparkling wine and superb brandy.

You’ll start your experience with a short introduction about the vineyard and its wine before heading out on a fascinating tour around the vineyard. Once back in the tasting room you’ll taste and learn about the white wines, sparkling wine and brandy made by Little Oak. Following your experience stay and enjoy a traditional Cotswold ploughmans lunch of local hams, cheeses, chutneys, crusty bread and salad, with your favourite white wine from your tasting. Before you leave make sure to visit the store and purchase some mementoes from your visit - whether a bottle of their award-winning sparkling wine or even a vine lease, so that you can own a little piece of Little Oak!

Tours run daily and can go ahead no matter the weather.

Buy a Soup Maker

What’s not to love about a soup maker? Cheaper and cleaner to run than using a hob and blender separately and once you added your veg’ and stock the soup maker does all the hard work for you. No hanging around to keep an eye on it - you can just head off to do some chores, keep working, help the kids with their homework or just put your feet up with a cup of tea. It’s an efficient and tasty way to get your vitamins and vegetables and there is an array of recipes to keep everyone interested. I wouldn’t be without one in the colder months.

Visit an Arboretum for Mother Nature’s Breath-Taking Autumnal Parade.

For such a beautiful yet fleeting part of the year where better to drink in the delights than a garden devoted to trees. Batsford Arboretum near Moreton-in-Marsh doesn’t disappoint; with a spectacular range of trees, beautiful views and a spacious brand-new wood clad cafe it’s well worth a visit. Additionally, there is marvellous Westonbirt The National Arboretum near Tetbury. It’s a 600-acre arboretum with over 2,500 species of trees where you can’t fail to get lost in the glory of Autumn.

Start a Film Club with Friends.

As the long dark nights descend upon us and the cold sets in, those leisurely summer evenings in the garden seem like a distant memory. Invite a few

friends round for drinks and nibbles, then choose a good film to hunker down and enjoy together. I like one with lots of laughs. Finding ways to connect in the darker seasons is so good for us. Lots of our villages also run film nights which can be a lovely way of keeping up with the people around us.

Buy some sensible footwear.

Another slightly humdrum offering but hear me out. If you really want to take advantage of the countryside during autumn and winter in the Cotswolds and Vale, a great pair of welly boots is a must. For me it’s the difference between a cold and soggy trudge and a lovely rambunctious ramble.

If you haven’t already invested in a sturdy, top class waterproof pair of wellingtons then now’s the time to do it. I tend to think if a farmer wears them then they must be good. I get the same recommendations from farmer friends over and over again:

1. Skellerup Quattro Sport Green Field Welly

2. Muck Boots Unisex Adults Wetland’s Boot approx. around £100

3. Le Chameu Neoprene Lined Boots approx. £200

4. Dunlop Blizzard Fleece lined Insulated Boot approx. £40

Plant some Bulbs

Come the first signs of spring I always feel envious of those who’ve made the effort to plant bulbs in the preceding autumn. Who can fail to feel happy and hopeful as those pretty blooms emerge tentatively into the last days of Winter? This year we’ve invested in a metal bulb planter and a bulb attachment for our drill. We’ve ordered an array of bulbs, each emerging at a different time to the next, overlapping to guarantee a delightful drawn-out display of flowers. Next year we intend to be full members of spring’s welcoming committee.

Start your Christmas shopping

There are those enviable people in the world who have their Christmas shopping done and dusted by the beginning of November at the very latest. Then there are those, who with the best intentions, are still scrambling around the shops at closing time on Christmas Eve. I fall roughly somewhere between the two; I’d very much like to change that. So, if you’re like me let’s commit to getting it done early.

Write your list and ask your friends and family the all-important gift question and for those who don’t respond in a timely manner it’s a book token, Gin or wine (and with so many beautiful bookshops in our villages and towns, first-class gin and wine who’s complaining). Then make a date with a friend and head to the shops. Some purchases will always have to be

done online but it’s so satisfying to support our local traders. This year I’m trying to think outside the box and am buying one or two presents from the vast range of antique and vintage barns we have dotted around. Find some of my favourites below.

THE GLORIOUS RED KITE.

Red kites have to be one of the great conservation success stories in recent UK history. Driven into extinction in 1870 by bounty hunters, poachers and egg thieves, reintroduction began in July 1990 in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ambitiously some 13 young Red Kites from the Navarra region in Spain were launched into our skies. Thankfully it is now one of the world’s longest running protection programmes and we are all familiar with their graceful, hypnotic flight as they circle our skies and effortlessly glide about on the wind. How utterly thrilling to view the world from this majestic bird’s perspective.

SPIDERS... LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM?

Spiders, for many people incite a very particular kind of fear and as we nestle gently into September many of us feel like spiders are invading our homes.

However, they aren’t really - some are on an important mission. Male spiders leave their webs in the Autumn and embark on a perilous journey to find a mate. Really, it’s just romance they’re after. Others might come indoors to warm up as the weather chills outside. Some just need a helping hand back to the garden.

There is a staggering 650 species of spider in the UK, the two you’re most likely to see inside are Giant House Spiders and the Cellar Spider aka ‘Daddy long-legs’.

Just a few species of Spider live in our homes all year round, doing their best to avoid contact and eating pests that cause humans problems –yes spiders actually help us.

For most of us it’s nothing but a minor inconvenience. Rarely, much like with a bee sting it can cause a reaction. Obviously, anyone feeling unwell should seek medical attention immediately. For the rest of us maybe it’s time we tolerated these quiet little helpers who actually make our world a better place.

Words by Mide Carter.

A scuttle across your foot as you’re watching television can make the most rational person flail about, but they’re almost completely harmless to humans. There is only three that cause an obvious bite, one being the much-maligned False Widow spider who, left with no choice might nip.

Information from the national History Museum: https://www.nhm.ac.uk/take-part/identify-nature/ spiders-in-your-home.html)

How can something so small create so much fear?

GARDENS ARE GOOD FOR THE SOUL.

We can eat, play, entertain and unwind. Experience the simple pleasures of pottering about with plants or just while away the hours drinking a little wine and gazing at the stars.

A landscape designer sounds extravagant. However, consider it an investment, potentially increasing your home’s value, and it can start to look like a compelling option... and quite often for less money then you’d think!

Research is obviously key; scan social media and reviews. Consult friends and neighbours. Always aiming for 3 or more quotes. Remember, landscape design can be done at any time of year, but Autumn planting gives new trees and shrubs the best chance of survival.

But how exactly do you transform that tired bit of land into something that makes your heart sing?

Research is obviously key; scan social media and reviews. Consult friends and neighbours. Always aiming for 3 or more quotes. Remember, landscape design can be done at any time of year, but Autumn planting gives new trees and shrubs the best chance of survival.

Then the fun begins; scour social media, magazines and Google to create an image mood board to collate your ideas. Search different options e.g. cottage garden, Japanese garden, modern garden etc and quickly you’ll find out what brings you joy. Do some rough sketches as ideas take shape.

All this is an excellent starting point for your designer. They can tell you what will work, what’s cost effective and what isn’t. They eat and breathe this stuff day in and day out. They will also have special relationships with suppliers and will source the best deals.

When the jobs done and you’re feeling pride and delight in your new garden –let yourself revel in that very particular pleasure that is money well spent.

SLOE GIN MAGIC.

I always feel a little giddy in Autumn when I see those plump purple sloes nestling in the Blackthorn bushes. They cry out to be plucked and sunk into some delectable Gin. Plus, there’s nothing quite like foraging about outside and bringing home your bounty to make you feel wholesome and connected with mother nature.

The best time for picking is after the first frost when the cold ignites the flavour of the berries. It’s a good sign if they’ve started dropping to the ground that they’re ready for picking. I always make sure I leave 2/3 for the birds and take the rest for myself – this is responsible foraging. Although this year if the blackberries are anything to go by, I think there will be more than enough to go around.

You’ll need the following:

. 500g ripe sloes.

. 250g golden caster sugar.

. 1 litre of Gin.

.2 Litre mason jar

Step 1. First give the sloes a good wash then pat down gently with a tea towel. Then, with the end of a sharp chopping knife poke a hole in each berry – this will release the flavour into the gin. Then tip them into your mason jar.

Step 2. Add the sugar and the gin and seal the jar. Give the jar a really good shake once a day for seven days. Leave for two to three months in a cool dark place.

Step 3. When ready line a sieve with some cheese cloth and place it over a bowel to strain the gin through. Then decant into clean steralised bottles. Give as gifts or sip slowly after a Sunday lunch with the dog at your feet.

CHRISTMAS FAIRS & MARKETS

Half the fun of Christmas as an adult is the build-up and when the festive season is so stunning in the Cotswolds and Vale it’s only right that we make the absolute most of it. One great way to kick start the seasonal buzz is the all-important and very charming Christmas Fairs and Markets. Many of the local schools do brilliant events with a first-class array of local craftspeople selling unique and quirky items at reasonable prices and of course, you might just get lucky on the tombola. A quick google of your local school’s website should point you in the right direction.

There are also many others dotted around here and there in our villages and towns with entertainment and an array of artisan treasures that make very special gifts.

See the next paragraph for a handful of the Christmas Fairs and markets in The Cotswolds and Vale.

• Broadway Late Night Christmas Shopping Market. Friday November 25th and Friday December 2nd. 5.308.30pm

• Evesham Medieval Artisan Fair. 26th27th November . Evesham Market Square 10am -10pm

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE AND DECLUTTER.

Autumn might not seem like the most obvious time to de-clutter but if you think about it, we spend a lot more time indoors in the autumn and winter so how our homes look and feel inside matters that bit more. It makes sense that a little harmony will go a long way and help keep us sane and happy in the dark and cold months ahead. You don’t have to devote yourself to minimalism or become neurotic about the odd bit of family mess, just commit to less stuff and a little more organisation.

First off start small, make it a project to last a month or so and don’t put loads of pressure on yourself- what’s the pointcommit to half an hour a day. Have one large reusable shopping bag for things to sell (if you can be bothered), another for charity and the last one for things for the bin. Start on your wardrobe as this will give you a kick each morning when you open it. When you’ve worked your way through your wardrobe and filled the bags divide everything that’s left in the wardrobe that you’re keeping into sections; tops, skirts, trousers etc. Then colour code each section – red tops together, blue etc. Make sure you can see everything, don’t double clothes up on coat hangers and hide things. Good organisation is about being able to see exactly what you’ve got.

Then it’s time to think about storage. You need to buy some containers and make sure you’ve got enough coat hangers. Aim for containers in a variety of sizes and some with lids - if you like a bit of cottage core (I do) go wicker. Fold jumpers and place them horizontally upwards so you can always see what you’ve got. This is Smart Folding and has changed my life. Put handbags in a container, belts, shoes etc.

The point is to have a place for everything. Apart from just having too much stuff, a lot of mess is made by consistently shoving things willy-nilly into wardrobes, cupboards and drawers which induces a sense of chaos when we can’t find what we want and are confronted by mess and disorganisation. To tackle the rest of the house, follow the same principles. There’s also some great books and journals out there that can be really useful.
