Inspire
Peyton Henry - Dancey
Peterborough photographer Heather Doughty has a vision – to recognize outstanding Canadian women who enrich their communities every day.
Inspire: The Women’s Portrait Project began as a four-month photographic celebration of women from the area who were nominated to participate. Overwhelmed by the response, and by the possibilities of expanding the timeframe and geographic scope, Ms. Doughty has set her sights on reaching right across the country. Doughty works with makeup artist Selena K. Wilson and freelance writer Paula Cassidy to develop an up-close-and-personal vignette of each exceptional woman who has been nominated. “Each photo not only celebrates an extraordinary woman but showcases the strength of community that happens when people uplift and support each other,” Doughty explained at the recent Women’s Expo Peterborough. The project’s website currently features 62 women, including: Hajni Hos - Executive Director at the New Canadians Centre, Peterborough: “…I am a mom, lead a non-profit, but I am also a lawyer and a teacher. I lead a community choir. I moved to the other side of the world because of a handsome fellow with a good heart…I learned 6 languages and don’t speak any of them properly…I love people, music, humour and sheep. I love to cook and I love to love. My faith is my strength and humour is my tool. I am way too direct and blunt…I don’t fit in a box.”
SELENA K. WILSON
Peyton Henry - Dancey – 8-year-old philanthropist, big sister to twin brothers, and future paleontologist: “I don’t ask for birthday presents because I have everything I need. Instead I ask for donations and donate them to local shelters, like the humane society and the warming room.” Cancer survivors, area ambassadors, professionals, artists, musicians, women with dreams, women with vision, from different walks of life – women who have overcome personal tragedies and reinvented themselves out of necessity, women who have filled a need where none existed, and who empower others by the very nature of their individual and collective spirits – these are the women of Inspire. In gloves, jacket and winter boots it allows lighter and

Do You Hear What I Hear? Said the night wind to the little lamb, "Do you see what I see? Way up in the sky, little lamb, Do you see what I see? A star, a star, dancing in the night With a tail as big as a kite, With a tail as big as a kite."
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy, "Do you hear what I hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy, Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song high above the trees With a voice as big as the the sea, With a voice as big as the the sea."
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king, "Do you know what I know? In your palace warm, mighty king, Do you know what I know? A Child, a Child shivers in the cold-Let us bring him silver and gold, Let us bring him silver and gold."
Said the king to the people everywhere, "Listen to what I say! Pray for peace, people, everywhere, Listen to what I say! The Child, the Child sleeping in the night He will bring us goodness and light, He will bring us goodness and light."

Bobcaygeon Communities in Bloom
Project Reaps Rewards Bobcaygeon has earned a prestigious 4 Blooms with a Special Mention for Community Involvement, as well as two awards for Ontario's top scores in Floral Displays and Environmental Action. Martin Quinn, Community in Blooms National Director, announced the results of the 2018 Bobcaygeon entry at a ceremony at Kawartha Coffee on Saturday, October 6th. Bobcaygeon's multi-group effort competed against other Ontario towns with populations between 1,501 and 5,000. Winning 4 blooms out of a possible 5 is considered an exceptional accomplishment for a first-time attempt. “That moment while we awaited the official announcement was a heart-pounder,” says volunteer Bonnie Harris. “This was an allnew challenge for all of us. When we heard the judges' decision, a huge cheer went up, but I could still hear sighs of relief. It was a powerful validation of everyone's joint efforts. We know we're building relationships that form a firm foundation for future projects, but having our effort recognized so visibly is the icing on the cake.” Along with beautification of the entire village, participation in the program brings many
benefits. It promotes green and sustainable initiatives, serves as a way to share best practices, and successful entrants often see an increase in tourism to the area. It also increases civic pride -- “People, Plants & Pride . . .Growing Together” is top-of-page for Communities in Bloom. “The Bobcaygeon Communities in Bloom team would like to thank Bobcaygeon’s amazing business owners, organizations, residents, cottagers, and the City of Kawartha Lakes staff who worked together to help put our best foot forward for Bobcaygeon’s Communities in Bloom effort this summer,” says Ann Adare, leader of the multi-group team. “Volunteers pitched in and helped where they were
needed and groups shared their resources – so many showed up and donated their most precious commodity, their time. From stepping up to help save an island; creating, planting and maintaining our gardens, trails and parks; picking up trash left behind or participating in one of many fundraisers and everything else in between — looking around at what we have accomplished, we can be so proud of our village of Bobcaygeon. Individually we had achieved a great deal but working together we have accomplished so much more.” For more information about Bobcaygeon's Communities in Bloom project and a list of all those who helped make it a success, see www.BobcaygeonCommunitiesInBloom.com

You Don't Have to be a Saint to be filled with Spirit of Christmas, but …THIS ONE IS! It’s Lindsay, Ontario’s St. Dave’s Diner and their 10th Annual Community Seniors Dinner on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. This festive event started in 2009 when David and Mariska Tomlinson, the founders of St. Dave’s Diner in Lindsay, decided to host a complimentary Christmas dinner, after hours at the restaurant, for the lowincome seniors from Hamilton Place. The first year saw about 20 people attend. Attendance grew each year and word spread via the seniors & their various support workers, and by popular demand a couple of years ago St. Dave’s opened it up to all the seniors in all of the community housing in Lindsay. Complimentary bussing is now provided by the City of Kawartha Lakes. St. Dave’s staff and several members of the community, including bus drivers and even Santa, donate their time. Some of the food is donated by the Diner’s suppliers. Since 2016 New Guys Taxi have donated their services to transport seniors that are not in housing and will be working again this year. Annual attendance is now close to 100. Somewhere along the way the seniors decided they wanted to give something back and although no payment is required to attend, those that can bring a toy or donate $5.00. All donations go to the Kinsmen Toy Drive - one generation looking after another as St. Dave’s (recent) new owner Jason Hore, likes to call it. Even Lindsay’s Mayor has dropped in to extend his Season's Greetings. Of the many events St. Dave’s Diner does, this one is clearly their favourite. Not only do these seniors get a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, which many would not get otherwise, they get out of the house to socialize with others (something that is a rarity for many). Seeing them dressed in their finest Christmas attire with smiles on their faces, and joining in a singalong with Santa is a wonderful way to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Their evening begins at 5:00 pm, dinner is served at 5:30 pm and it usually wraps up by 6:30 pm. St. Dave’s welcome you to come and join them for the meal or just stop in to say hello and share some time with these wonderful senior members of the Kawartha Lakes community. St. Dave's Diner is located at 2925 Highway 35, in Lindsay, Ontario and you can reach them at 705-328-9411

Find Your
Hat & Mitts It's sad to say, but colder weather is on its way. Hopefully your cottage is ready to go until spring, but you should do winter checks whenever possible. It would not be fun to arrive at the cottage in spring to find damage of any kind. The snow loads up north are much more than in the city so if the drifts on your roof at home are large, you can be sure that they are larger at the cottage. If you head up this winter, make sure to bring the keys, a snow shovel, a roof rake, some basic hand tools and spare batteries for smoke detectors and flashlights. When you arrive, do a perimeter walk look for heavy snow, broken windows, etc; clear the area around your furnace vents and your propane tanks. Make sure that there is fuel for when you are there next. Remove any branches, and check for leaning or broken trees. Keep an eye out for critter tracks too.
Once inside, check the plumbing for any noticeable water marks or broken drains. Change the furnace filter and the batteries in the smoke detectors. I have heard that it is a good idea to run your furnace and appliances while you are there - this will help keep parts from seizing up. If everything inside is good, head outside and start to clear the snow from the roof and walkways. Clear as much snow away from the cottage as you can. This will help to avoid any rot to the building in the spring melt. If you are unable to make it up to the cottage during the winter, consider hiring a company to monitor and maintain your
investment. It is not an expensive service for the work provided, and it will give you piece of mind. It is also becoming popular to install cameras which you can access from your smartphone. For those of you who have snowmobiles, now would be a good time to go for a ride. Enjoy yourself while you are there. Go for a walk and enjoy the beauty of nature, the same beauty that inspired you to buy your piece of paradise. Merry Christmas! Dave Linkert Port 32 Marshall Homes, Bobcaygeon Photo by Katie Ellement

Avoiding
“Cookie Cutter” Decor It is fun and exciting to decorate indoors and outdoors for the winter season. However, many of the materials we use are the same (evergreens, birch sticks, pinecones), so it is a challenge to make your personal decor stand out. The quest is to avoid having “cookie cutter” creations. For your outdoor pots (any pot can be used, as long as it is winterproof) a base of mixed evergreen boughs can be pressed into the existing soil of the container. What you add next can highlight the design of your home or your unique personality. Do you have a country-inspired home and style? Add in some birch logs or a funky driftwood stick for height and drama. Perhaps hang a pair of skates on a branch of the wood if your family loves to skate or play hockey. Do you have a formal home? Fill your pots full and lush with magnolia tips, draping evergreens and perhaps a hook with a metal lantern. A modern home? Add brightly painted sticks and various greens in neat rows of each variety; this is a trendy, modern, European look. Consider additional pieces to accent your container creations. A pair of skis leaning against the wall tied with a bow? A sled

integrated into a scene on the porch? Branches draped in mini lights? Your imagination and style can run wild! Indoors, small snips of evergreens can be added to a simple Poinsettia by inserting the stems directly into the soil of the plant. Safe, realistic battery operated candles can be added to any arrangement of fresh or potted flowers or nestled on plates of candies, pinecones and nuts. White and green are the trend colours for indoor decor – clean, crisp and so effective highlighted with mini lights! How can you add this pallet, creatively, to your own home? Every Season for
Summer is over, and what a great summer it was, wasn’t it? But it’s time to pack up those water wings, picnic baskets, sunblock, and swimsuits for another season. Time to break out the shovels and the parkas; look out onto the short grey days, and long arctic nights of the metropolitan winter, with all of it’s slush, salt, and tedium. But wait! There’s no need to hibernate! No need to loathe winter! If you haven’t been back to our lovely cottage region over the winter months, you are missing out on a whole new wonderful world. A lot of folks don’t realise or remember that there are still plenty of lovely, cozy cottages available in the so-called ‘offseason’, and there’s still plenty to do and see even after the snow has started falling in the Haliburton region. Have you ever tried dog-sledding? Yup, there’s the Winterdance dog sledding competitions, but you can actually try the sport if you like, and take a tour. How about downhill skiing at Sir Sam's, or cross-country skiing at Pinestone Resort? There are also hundreds of
groomed cross-country ski trails which criss-cross the region. Get a whole new perspective of the Highlands by taking a skate hike across one of our many lakes. How about icefishing, snowshoeing, or even camping and hiking? It goes without saying that there are also many snowmobile trails which cross the region, including the national trails. Choose one of the many outdoor adventures offered at yoursoutdoors.ca. Everything takes on a new, magical wonder in the majesty and natural beauty of the Ontario Highlands in the winter. Even if your thing is just staying close to the cottage and surrounding yourself with family during the holidays, or just ‘getting away from it all’, a whole new world is waiting just a couple of hours north of Toronto, or a few hours west of Ottawa. Those Were The Days “And Then A New Year”
I fondly remember when I was a boy - my grandfather standing on our front porch, taking out his pocket watch and at exactly twelve o’clock in his beautiful English accent proclaiming loud and clear, “Appy Noo Yeeah”; his personal welcome to twelve new months of special days and holidays. I guess the most special day of the year is our own birthday when we look forward to many wishes for happiness, a birthday cake with candles and hopefully a present or two. I am not sure when it happens exactly but there comes a time around my age when birthdays are just another number and candles on a cake? Oh my, heaven forbid such a bonfire. In the New Year our wedding anniversary is to us a special day, so much as this coming March will be our sixty-fifth. The Valentine card will once again be placed in a drawer as we look forward to both Mother’s and Father’s Day, two of my extra special days. My parents have long since taken their place among the angels but every night without fail I still look at their picture and say good night. Of course we honour and respect our sons and their wives, our grandkids and great-grandkids - their birthdays and anniversaries and meaningful holidays such as Good Friday and Easter, but I guess in my own mind the two days each year that stand out for me are Remembrance Day and Christmas Day. I have devoted many pages in my book to the men and women who gave their lives so that we may enjoy today’s freedoms although having no idea why I feel such a strong kinship with those who fought and died long before I was even born and to those who gave their all in wars I too vividly remember.
THE CENOTAPH by Russ Sanders
They came, Some in wheel chairs, Some with canes, But they were there.
They marched, Some slowly, Some out of step, But all with pride.
They stood in the cold, Some erect, Some bent and shivering, But they endured.
They wore their medals, Some with many, Some with few, But each one earned.
They saluted their flag, Some with newfound strength, Some with feebled strain, But all with patriot heart.
They heard the hymns, Some with steely gaze, Some with teary eye, Each in private thought.
They looked into the past, Some with blank stare, Some with mirrored eyes, But all with memories.
They came, To remind us, Lest we forget, ..... Some for the last time.
And then Christmas, the most wonderful time of the entire year. A time when Peace On Earth has real meaning. A time when strangers shake hands with strangers wishing each a very merry and healthy future. A time when we feed the hungry, give to the less fortunate and exchange gifts with friends, loved ones and even strangers. I remember our family Christmases, each one a bit better than the one before. We can celebrate many things in our lives for various reasons and various memories but surely Christmas is one of my most cherished holidays. A Very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy New Year to all my readers. Russ Sanders epigram@nexicom.net

The Railway
Comes to Peterborough Getting to Peterborough and its environs has not always been easy: after disembarking at the port of Cobourg, early settlers walked the fifteen miles to Rice Lake then boated across the lake and up the Otonabee River; by 1845, when Sandford Fleming arrived from Scotland, there was a “winter road” from Port Hope that entered Peterborough from the west. The Backwoods became much more accessible when the first railway arrived in Peterborough. The idea of a railway from Cobourg to Rice Lake for shipping timber and agricultural products was initially proposed in the early 1830s, but was not realized until 1854. The Cobourg & Peterborough Railway was chartered on 10 December 1852, and construction began on 7 February 1853 with a sod-turning ceremony in Cobourg. Tracks reached Rice Lake at Harwood in May 1854, followed within the year by the
Rice Lake Bridge which spanned the three miles between Harwood and Hiawatha. The last stretch of line continued to the Peterborough station in Ashburnham Village. The first train pulled into Ashburnham on 29 December 1854. There was no charge for the “throngs” of Cobourg residents who made this trip, but it was far from luxurious – only open flatcars with rough wooden benches were provided. Imagine that 28.8mile ride with no protection from cold and wind! Perhaps there was a warmup stop in Harwood, but it is very likely that some passengers brought along flasks of “antifreeze”. This free trip was truly a case of “you get what you pay for”. Within a year, ice damaged the bridge. In 1860 it was deemed unsafe for the visiting Prince of Wales to cross Rice Lake by train, so he went by steamer. The Cobourg &
Peterborough Railway operated until about 1865 with steamboats replacing the bridge -- primarily carrying millions of board feet of lumber and tons of uncut timber to Cobourg -- but succumbed to competition from the better-financed Port Hope, Lindsay & Beaverton Railway. Signs of the old Cobourg & Peterborough Railway still exist, however, at Harwood and Hiawatha, and in Rice Lake. Make Sure Your Heating System is
Ready For Winter If you travel the roads in the Kawartha Lakes and surrounding areas, you have probably seen a Highlands Propane truck – whether they are delivering propane, doing an installation or completing a service call they are on call 24/7.
With natural gas coming to the Fenelon Falls area, Highlands Propane wants to reassure the community that their team of licensed technicians are ready and available to assist them in their transition to natural gas.
The family-owned/operated business was started almost 30 years ago by a young Shawn Bellwood, whose first office was his bedroom in his parents’ home. Today Shawn, with his wife Jackie, brother Jim and a staff of nearly 30 employees are proud to work with other industry leaders like Empire Heating Systems, Enviro, Kingsman Fireplaces, Hot Dawg, Unique Off-Grid Appliances, Trane, Continental Heating & Cooling and Rinnai so they can continue to offer the very best possible service and products to their customers.
They encourage anyone interested in converting to natural gas to contact Highlands Propane, where their staff will walk them through the process and help them make an informed decision that is best for the individual needs of the customer and their families.
Community involvement comes naturally to the Bellwoods. They serve on many boards, committees and associations, as well as being active members in the Lions Club, and organizing the annual Car, Truck & Bike Show on the Civic Holiday weekend. They also take great pride in providing sponsorship and support to local sports organizations, youth activities and charitable endeavours.
As winter approaches, Highlands Propane reminds you that it is time to book your service appointment, to make sure your heating system is ready to keep you warm and safe during the cold months ahead. One great recipe, two different centres; rum-soaked cherry, or a luscious rum buttercream. Both are perfect for the holidays.

CHOCOLATE RUM BALLS Ingredients & Amounts For the chocolate coating: 1½ cups of toasted ground hazelnuts 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate, ground 1 cup of icing sugar 1 tablespoon of premium dark rum 2 tablespoons of pasteurized egg whites For the cherry centres: 18 sour cherries, drained 1 cup of premium dark rum
For the rum buttercream filling: 2 hardboiled egg yolks 5 tablespoons of butter, unsalted at room temperature 10 tablespoons of icing sugar 1 tablespoon of premium dark rum For the outside finish: 1 cup of toasted ground hazelnuts 6 ounces of white chocolate, ground
Instructions Prepare the sour cherries: Place 18 sour cherries in a small bowl. Add rum, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or up to a week for a more pronounced flavour. Prepare rum buttercream: Pass the cooked egg yolks through a fine sieve and combine with the butter and sugar. Stir with a spoon until light and fluffy. Add the rum and stir to combine. Transfer filling into a piping bag and pipe small ½" knobs onto a parchment-lined plate. Transfer buttercream into the freezer until the knobs harden. Prepare chocolate coating: Place all of the ingredients into a medium-sized bowl and stir together. Gather mixture together by hand until it has a dough-like consistency. Roll into 1-inch balls, 36 in total. Prepare rum balls: Flatten a ball of chocolate, put either one cherry or one knob of buttercream in the centre. Form the chocolate around filling until sealed. Roll in finish: Roll the cherry-filled balls in the ground hazelnuts. Roll the buttercream-filled balls in the white chocolate. Store in an airtight container and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before enjoying so that they’re melt-in-your mouth soft.
WHO DOESN’T LOVE SHORTBREADS? Rich, buttery cookies flavoured with rolled oats and finished with a snowflake motif; it all begs the question, “who doesn't love shortbreads?" Ingredients & Amounts ¾ cup of old-fashioned rolled oats 2½ cups of unbleached all-purpose flour ½ cup of cornstarch 1¼ cups of confectioners’ sugar ½ teaspoon of salt 1 1/8 cups of unsalted butter, chilled and cut into 18 tablespoons granulated or icing sugar for sprinkling Instructions Adjust oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 300˚F. Place rolled oats into a food processor fitted with a blade attachment. Process until finely chopped. Transfer to a mediumsized bowl and add flour, cornstarch, sugar and salt. Whisk dry ingredients together.
and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Gently create holiday motif by applying a cookie press form down onto each.
Transfer dry ingredients into a food processor fitted with a paddle attachment. Add butter and run on a low setting until shortbread dough forms.
Transfer cookies to oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until lightly golden, watching carefully that they don’t burn.
Divide dough in two. Wrap one half in plastic wrap and refrigerate until use, up to four days. On a floured surface, take the remaining dough and roll it out to a ¼ inch thickness. Cut out cookie shapes
Remove from oven and sprinkle with either confectioners’ or granulated sugar. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week, if they last that long!

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer Irish Rovers
Grandma got run over by a reindeer Walking home from our house Christmas eve. You can say there's no such thing as Santa, But as for me and Grandpa, we believe. She'd been drinkin' too much egg nog, And we'd begged her not to go. But she'd left her medication, So she stumbled out the door into the snow. When they found her Christmas mornin', At the scene of the attack. There were hoof prints on her forehead, And incriminatin' Claus marks on her back. Grandma got run over by a reindeer, Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa, But as for me and Grandpa, we believe. Now were all so proud of Grandpa, He's been takin' this so well. See him in there watchin' football, Drinkin' beer and playin' cards with cousin Belle.
Now the goose is on the table And the pudding made of fig. And a blue and silver candle, That would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig.
It's not Christmas without Grandma. All the family's dressed in black. And we just can't help but wonder: Should we open up her gifts or send them back?
I've warned all my friends and neighbours. Better watch out for yourselves." They should never give a license, To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.
Grandma got run over by a reindeer, Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve. You can say there's no such thing as Santa, But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Jingle Bells Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh Over the fields we go, laughing all the way; Bells on bob-tail ring, making spirits bright What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight Chorus Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank and we got upsot (Chorus) A day or two ago, the story I must tell I went out on the snow, and on my back I fell; A gent was riding by, in a one-horse open sleigh He laughed as there I sprawling lie but quickly drove away (Chorus) Now the ground is white, go it while you're young Take the girls tonight, and sing this sleighing song; Just get a bob-tailed bay, two-forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! you'll take the lead (Chorus) James Pierpont - 1857

Popsicle Stick Soldier There are so many fun Christmas crafts floating around on the internet, we chose to do the popsicle stick soldiers. It was a fun afternoon craft. What you need: • Jumbo craft sticks • Popsicle sticks • Red, yellow, blue, and black acrylic paint • Foam brushes with the sponge tip and plastic insert removed • Mod Podge • Hot glue • Twine • Paintbrushes Directions: First we put the sponge hat on so we could see where the face would go, you can glue it on, we didn’t feel the need for the jumbo craft stick fit perfect. We painted the popsicle sticks first and let them dry. Next we Mod Podged all the pieces. After that was dry we used the Mod Podge to glue the arms on, you have to hold these till they stick. I also taped the back of the arm just for extra support. After our soldier was all glued together, we added a drop of hot glue to the back of his hat and attached the twine. Voilà – a perfect soldier.
All I Want For Christmas Is My 2 Front Teeth Every body stops and stares at me These two teeth are gone as you can see I don't know just who to blame for this catastrophe! But my one wish on Christmas Eve is as plain as it can be! All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth! Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could with you "Merry Christmas." It seems so long since I could say, "Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!" Gosh oh gee, how happy I'd be, if I could only whistle (thhhh) All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth. Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth,
Away in a Manger
then I could wish you "Merry Christmas!"
Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Mary’s Wedding – And a Soldier's Horse The ominous sky, with sun peeking through the clouds; an ideal setting to create the poetic dreamlike memory of a lover lost in war, his horse and the woman he loved. Inukshuk Farm is a place that welcomes new challenges, and we had just that last weekend! Our farm was honoured to welcome Mary Young Leckie, producer, Kent Staines, Director, and Cinematographer Glenn Warner to shoot a “trailer” for the play Mary’s Wedding, written by Stephen Massicotte and opening in Toronto January 2019. Of course, there was preplanning for a suitable location on the farm as well as confirming our horse, Dexter, had the right look, presence, character and manners to cooperate during hours of filming. And so it was, criteria was met and there I was walking across our field with Fedora’s Mr. Redford (Dexter) slowing walking behind – I thought about the script and how fortunate we are to play a small part in remembering the WWI story; the soldiers along with their four-legged war comrades lost and their lovers left behind. Just to think, our Dexter may help touch the hearts of many viewers as they watch this ‘trailer’ and feel compelled to see more as we approach the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War 1 – 1918. This story is
a moving memorial to both the Great War and great love. Dexter is not an experienced horse with cameras, directors, and actors but he rose to the occasion and connected quickly with Katie Ross (Mary) and Fraser Elsdon (Charlie). We understand how charisma between actors is important, Dexter needed to have that connection too. It happened quickly, as if he understood his sombre duty to give those watching a sense of a soldier and his horse. At the end of the day and as darkness fell on Inukshuk Farm, “the sound of a single horse riding away into the distance” echoed in our ears with poetic imagination. We encourage everyone to purchase tickets to see Mary’s Wedding an epic, unforgettable story of love, hope, and survival. www. crowstheatre.com (647)341-7390 Submitted by Janice Ecclestone, Inukshuk Farm www.inukshukfarm.com

The Season of Giving The holiday season seems to arrive faster and faster with each passing year. It's a time to be with family and friends, to count our blessings and to think about those less fortunate. It is important for each of us to set out plans for year-end in an attempt not to fall into a debt trap from over spending, but some of us look beyond the gifts to those around us and how we can provide for causes that are dear to our hearts. Indeed, there has been a shift in recent years towards giving charitable donations in lieu of gifts. These might be small token gestures or they might be more substantial, yet in both cases the enrichment from giving to the needy can exceed that from what we wrap up in paper and bows this season. As much as we stress the importance of sound financial planning to discover what and how we should spend this time of year, a plan may also uncover the resources and advantages of significant gifting. Often this is something that individuals will outline in their wills and much has been written about how this can be extremely useful in estate planning. For instance, a large charitable bequest when we pass can be used to offset additional taxes that may be incurred at estate time; such as how the remaining balances of an RRSP or RRIF or taxed, or capital gains that materialize on the deemed disposition of secondary properties or non-registered investments.
years. There are two advantages to taking this approach. First, it has always been my belief that being alive to see your charitable support in action carries more satisfaction than waiting until we pass away. It is also possible that a charity that you name in your will may not be considered an eligible charity in the future. Second, if there are identified tax risks to your estate from those areas outlined above, it might make sense to bring your charitable donations forward so that you mitigate those additional taxes today. This might involve using tax credits from donations today to take more than your minimum RRIF payments and therefore put your RRIF on a trajectory towards a smaller balance at death. The same might be true in terms of triggering capital gains, such as in the selling or gifting of your cottage property. In both cases, always consider the gifting of investments that carry large capital gains.
Remember that as joyous as this season is, there are people and support agencies which have greater needs this time of year. Providing assistance will not only bring you more joy, but it might even be a smart tax strategy as well. An even stronger case can be made for advanced gifting. This involves identifying the ability to make a charitable bequest on our passing and bringing it forward either in a lump sum, or spread out over a number of
