Havelock Jamboree

Celebrates 30 Years Growing up, we all have something we remember each summer that holds a special memory - something you look forward to because has become a tradition. For me those memories all include music. I grew up in a family where gatherings were kitchen parties, guitar players filled all the kitchen chairs. I also grew up going to the Havelock Jamboree - it was a family affair as my uncles rocked the stage with The Swamp Band. In August 1990 the Havelock Jamboree was born - for three days 1000 country music fans camped on 10 acres with many well-known local bands crossing the stage. Since then the festival has grown from its small town country roots and now includes full service grounds, paved roads, street lights and some 600 hydro campsites that allow campers to stay comfortably. The festival grounds now encompass 500 acres, and come that special week in August the grounds are packed with friends all looking for that one-of-a-kind Havelock Jamboree party. Touring around the grounds you will see smiling faces everywhere, the droves of people who attend are all just so happy to be brought

together for a common interest. Friendly faces, laughter and ‘Happy Havelock’ greet you as you travel through any of the 20 camping fields. Over the years the Jamboree has been host to over 4200 award winning musicians with names like Kenny Rogers, Ronnie Hawkins, Reba, Randy Travis, Loretta Lynn, Alan Jackson, Blue Rodeo, Lee Bryce, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Doc Walker, Lonestar, The Band Perry, Tebey, Gord Bamford & George Canyon, gracing the twin stages – and the list goes on and on. 2019 added a little rock twist to the lineup with April Wine and Randy Bachman (The Guess Who & BTO). CCMA winner Brett Kissel astounded with his stellar performance, inviting not only

the Road Hammers to join him on stage but the Washboard Union as well! The Jamboree’s 30th birthday brought to the stage a long list of predominantly Canadian performers, and the estimated 30,000 fans enjoyed every minute. The team at the Havelock Jamboree work tirelessly to ensure every year is packed with fun, and without the countless volunteers the weekend wouldn’t go as smoothly as it does. The Jamboree also works hard to give back to the community that hosts it, and over the years has supported many local charities and endeavours. This year I turn 35 - I have missed a few but for the most part have been attending the Havelock Jamboree for most of my life. The excitement leading up to that weekend is like a kid at Christmas, and the feeling as you pull into the fields is best explained as a feeling of coming home. After you have attended the Jamboree once, you become a part of the Havelock family. By Emily Ireland The Cottage Country Team congratulates you on 30 amazing years! Happy Havelock!

Laughter, New Experiences & Teachable Moments I took my children camping. My husband was away and I decided that taking a baby, a toddler and a ten-year-old into the bush on a weekend was a great idea. I had the blessing of the camping gods upon me though, as both young ones slept the entire way to the site and I got to enjoy a heavenly cup of coffee in silence. The trip was hard work. I had neurotically prepared with many scribbled mom-lists and many totes packed with every possible food, cleaning and first aid item that could be required in a three-day span. Amidst the barrage of questions that mostly included, “When can we go swimming?” and “What’s for dinner?”, sleeping bags were unrolled, food was unpacked, and life jackets and paddles made their way quickly to the water. Now at this point, I could focus on the chaos, the screaming, the crying and a few meltdowns that may or may not have been the result of a scary spider on the ceiling of the trailer at midnight. However, what unfolded over the next forty hours was a ton of laughter, new experiences and teaching moments that were the direct result of my children spending time with their grandparents. My parents were part of the trip and spent every waking moment of the day with my kids. They taught them how to build a proper fire, took them fishing, swimming, kayaking, walked them up and down to the lake countless times, listened to campfire stories, played many rounds of UNO around the picnic table, snorkeled, took them tubing, and also supplied my kids with an endless amount of kisses, hugs and cuddles. These same memories that I hold dear from my childhood are being made with my own brood. So despite the hard work, the lack of sleep and scary spiders; I took my children camping with Nana and Pops, and it was a great idea. The creative possibilities are endless when it comes to setting a cottage table for entertaining friends and family! Add a dose of whimsy, an edge of rustic or trim with formal and you have an interesting and memorable tablescape. The cottage setting conjures up a relaxed and carefree feeling, this is where the creative inspiration for setting a table can really take hold. Anything can take centre stage when you look around at what you have within your own cottage environment. From place setting name tags imprinted on rocks to small bouquets of wildflowers, setting a cottage table can be inexpensive, inclusive and leave a lasting impression on your guests. Consider supporting local artists by investing in unique linen napkins and textiles which are hand-painted and hand-made. These offer up an interesting story and can be matched with more rustic accessories like pine cones, antlers, wooden candlesticks and pretty tealight holders. Home stores generally have an assortment of themed napkins at reasonable price points - stock up on these to use as a starting point for your color scheme or theme. Nautical prints and patterns are easy to find, along with forest and animal inspired imagery. Starting with the napkin allows you to further consider other handy accessories which can be layered into your tablescape. Mixing textures and shades like stone, greenery and muted colors will evoke a soft and approachable ambiance that keeps your dinner setting relaxed long into the night. Guests will appreciate the effort and everyone of all ages can participate by hunting and gathering items for the table theme. Try impactful and unexpected designs and patterns to keep your table setting whimsical. Incorporating something you don’t see every day is a way to create a dining experience your guests will remember long after the weekend has passed.

The Army in Morrow Park Europe was engulfed in war in the summer of 1940. Canada and other Commonwealth countries were mobilizing to help Britain defend herself from threatened invasion by Nazi Germany. Peterborough area men enlisted in all branches of Canada’s armed forces, local manufacturers began converting their factories to produce materiel for the war effort, and City Council offered the Exhibition Grounds (now Morrow Park) to the Department of Defence as one of 40 military training grounds it would build across Canada. There was doubt if the Peterborough Exhibition could be held in 1940, but the Canadian Army engineers supervising the training centre’s construction delayed it by a week to accommodate the fair. The Ex ran 14-17 August and was one of the best in memory, with strong showings in all categories of animals and produce, a good midway, and fine entertainment shows. Attendance was respectable but down a bit – partly attributed to farmers harvesting their crops instead of going to the Ex, because of a wartime farm labour shortage. Within a few hours of the fair’s closing, lumber for constructing barracks and other camp buildings was on the grounds. Army engineers arrived shortly and put crews of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and labourers to work. By 28 August, water

and sewer lines were laid to serve the 43 buildings completed or nearly finished. Total cost for building the camp was about $300,000. The first of 27,000 recruits who would eventually rotate through No. 32 Canadian Military Training Centre arrived in early October for their basic training. My father, George Willcock, remembered that when he trained there in 1941 the Centre had no gymnasium or swimming pool, so they regularly marched up and down George Street to use the YMCA facilities at George and Murray.

repairs to the grounds. Auctioning off surplus buildings, intact or as construction materials, raised $30,500 more. Many “wartime” houses were built for returning City servicemen’s families from the remains of No. 32 CMTC – some of which still exist. Fall Garden Clean Up with Vikki

Most perennials require a cut back before the next year’s growth emerges in the spring. You can choose to cut them down to four to six inches in height in the fall or early spring - it’s your call. Our display garden here at Griffin’s Greenhouses is cut back in the fall because we don’t have time to do it in the spring and we prefer the look of a clean landscape over winter. You may choose to leave up all perennials or even just certain ones (ornamental grasses and hydrangeas, for example) and deal with them in the spring.

shrubs can be cut back? Do call a good garden centre for advice.

To cut back a perennial, use sharp cutters or shears and remove the foliage from the remaining stalks. Perennials that don’t need cutting back include low growing ground covers such as sedum, thyme and hens ‘n chicks. Unsure if your flowering

When beds are empty of annuals and excess perennial foliage, spots to plant spring flowering bulbs can be decided. Adding tulips and daffodils which will bloom in April and early May is a fabulous way to add succession of bloom to your garden.

Tender summer bulbs such as dahlias and cannas are removed, scrubbed free of excess soil and left in the outdoor sun to dry for about a week. Store them in a paper bag in a cool location indoors for the winter. Tropical plants can be sprayed with preventative insecticidal soap and gradually brought to a sunny window inside your home.

Lastly, shredded leaves can be raked into beds as protection in case we get a winter without snow – yes, snow is our friend and it insulates the plants! Leaf mulch should be hilled around the base of roses and tender perennials (Rose of Sharon and perennial hibiscus) around mid-November, as one of the last tasks of the season. Plant a Tree this Fall When typical autumn conditions arrive, the weather turns cool and with lots of rain the soil conditions become perfect for tree roots to establish themselves; this makes fall the best time to plant a tree. It is time to choose the right tree for the yard at your home or cottage. Trees are well known for improving air quality, providing wildlife habitat, growing food, and increasing property value. Their ability to combat climate change, reduce energy needs and improve our physical and psychological health is clear. Many of us have a favourite tree species that we’d like to see in our yard, however, it is best to understand the planting location before choosing a species to plant there. The more you know about your yard, the easier it will be to select a species that will thrive there. Just like people, trees are particular about their living conditions. It is best to find a good match between the tree’s requirements and the conditions present in your yard. Soil type, moisture, sun, and exposure are all important factors which will affect tree growth. You can start by understanding the soil so that you are able to plant species that will grow healthy roots. Is the soil heavy and wet? Is it dry and gritty?

virginiana) or the stunning Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) for more shady locations. Consider choosing a species that is native to our region. They have developed complex evolutionary relationships with other native species, grow well in local soil conditions and have adapted to the area’s unique climate. It is always beneficial to plant a diverse range of species. With a changing climate, we are able to consider planting a broader range of trees and shrubs which are now able to thrive in the Peterborough area. For example, planting Carolinian forest species, which typically thrive in more southern regions, allows even greater biodiversity; Hoptree (Ptelea trifoliata), Kentucky Coffee Tree (Gymnocladus dioicus), and Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) are unique trees able to grow in sites protected from bitter winter winds.

When choosing a planting location, you will want to consider the tree from its roots all the way up to the canopy. If the planting location is in a low lying area which remains moist, you will want to plant a species that will thrive with ‘wet feet’ as its roots will be moist for extended periods of time. Trees that grow well in more moist conditions include Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis), Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor), and Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)

Whether you are planting a tree to increase shade, attract birds, beautify your yard, grow food or reduce flooding, there is a lot to consider. Mark your calendar and visit GreenUP Ecology Park at 1899 Ashburnham Drive, Peterborough for the Autumn Tree Sale to choose the right tree for the job. It is on Saturday, October 5th 10am to 4pm. Sale species and prices will be available at Ecology Park on sale day only. Staff will be on hand to answer your questions and help you choose the right tree for your yard.

Up to the canopy – how much sun will the tree receive? Some trees are tolerant of shady conditions while others are not and need full sun to prosper. Consider Honey-Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) or White Birch (Betula papyrifera) for full sun and Ironwood (Ostrya

If you don’t know much about your soil, you can look for some clues about its consistency. For example, when you water plants in your yard, does the water soak in quickly? If so, it is likely to be a sandy or gravelly soil; on clay, water will sit longer and soak in after some time. You can gain more information by digging up a small sample. Clay feels lumpy and sticky when it is wet; sandy soil feels gritty; silty soil feels soapy; and loamy soil is spongy. A handful of soil with a high clay consistency will form a shape in your hand when you squeeze it in your fist, whereas sandier soil will break apart.

Trust the Walden Family with the

Kitchen of Your Dreams The best parties always happen in the kitchen - it seems to be the gathering place in most homes. Some of the best memories are played out across the kitchen table - family meals filled with helping hands and home-cooked meals, laughter over the counter as the table is set and the family sits down to recap all the highlights of the day. Families gather in kitchens. Erwin and Ann Walden, along with their two sons, opened Walden's Kitchen Centre in 1990. Erwin, a German master cabinet maker moved to Canada in 1960, bringing extensive knowledge and the value of good workmanship. The business was passed to Ann and Erwin’s sons in 2005, keeping the family-run business a wholesome experience as Erwin and Ann moved into retirement. Now solely owned by Ken Walden, the younger of the two sons, Ken has been installing and working in the kitchen industry alongside his dad since he was five years old. In keeping with the family tradition Ken’s daughter Kacey is the third generation Walden to work in the store. Kacey has a passion for interior design and woodworking, and as Walden tradition goes has been working by her dad's side since she was a kid.

Walden’s offers a 3D design centre and showroom featuring ‘Live Design’, an amazing experience during which you sit down with the Walden’s team and watch the design of your kitchen come together right in front of your eyes! 3D rendering presents you with a visual walk-through, allowing you to preview exactly what your space and layout will feel like.. The Right Person for the Right Job – Is it You? Finally, Fall is upon us, and the weather has been pretty decent for the most part. A late start to summer meant I was thrown way behind on my improvement projects, and I’m expecting that you are much the same. I was worried that all of my plans would not be completed before summer came to a close. Summer temperatures and sunshine are definitely ideal for working on our lists, but it is also important to enjoy each of the seasons and not just work them away, which is really an odd thing for me. Luckily, I have found a solution to this dilemma. Take a look at your list and pick a few jobs that you can realistically accomplish yourself without giving up too much of your time to relax. For the rest, take the must-haves for this year and hire someone to do it for you. Some jobs just simply need a professional tradesperson, for your own good and the good of your cottage. I know that I have touched on this before, but I am a strong believer in hiring the right person for the job. This concept works well for most things in life, so why not use it for your place of relaxation. Don’t get me wrong, sweat equity can go a long way, and be very rewarding as well as less costly, usually. Be sure to hire locally. Trades know trades, which will make your hiring decisions easier when you get to that point. We have worked hard to get where we are and it’s time to enjoy it, so take another look at that list and choose wisely. As always, I would like to offer my thoughts on your projects, challenges and questions, so feel free to contact me at the email below and I will do my best to help out! Maybe your next question will be featured in an upcoming issue! Enjoy your down time this Fall. Fishing for Fall Time Fatties With the fishing season winding down, temperatures in Cottage Country start to drop and the lakes become less populated. Summer vacations come to an end, kids return to school and cottagers head back to the grind in the city. Now this may sound depressing to most, but this is the perfect time for anglers to hit the water to fish for their favourite target species. As the water temperatures cool, the lakes start to turn over, this is nature’s signal for bass, muskie and walleye to start putting on the proverbial feed bags. This means action can be hot and heavy with fish becoming more active, foraging furiously to fatten up for the cold winter months ahead. When fish behave more aggressively you can catch them on a variety of your favourite presentations. From fast moving baits such as crank baits, spinner baits and top waters, to slower presentations such as jigs, soft plastics and live bait; they all seem to work with more consistency at this time of year. Fall is also a time which historically yields record catches! All of the factors above are why hardcore trophy-anglers will find themselves braving these cold conditions with hopes of landing one of these monsters. So before you pack up your tackle boxes, put away your rods and winterize your boat, get out on your favorite body of water for a final fishing trip before the ice hits, and pursue your fall fish of a lifetime! See you on the water! Your friend in fishing, Mike Williams Pro Angler & Owner of Williams Outfitters in Curve Lake First Nation www.williamsoutfitters.com

Independent Publisher Book Awards recognizes local author, Pauline Kiely, for her riveting memoir

No Poverty Between the Sheets Pauline Kiely was made in the dark, in a hurry, in the backseat of a 1953 Buick - Hudson Jet. Her Irish father is the fourth of ten children, and her French Canadian mother the baby of twelve. These young parents are described as two sticks of dynamite, and the rollicking romp through Kiely's childhood and adolescent years includes the introduction of siblings, a Maltese terrier named Pixie, and her faithful horse, Jet. This true story may stir memories and emotions you might have forgotten you had. It spans four generations and brims with lively animated characters. Readers are treated to holidays in Ireland, camping adventures at Bon Echo Park, and quality time spent on Frog Island at Belmont Lake. Kiely describes her book as sort of a cross between “All in the Family” and “The Walton's”. When the author poses the question, "If you were so poor why did you have ten kids?", her witty Granny Kiely replies, "To be certain, there was no poverty between the sheets!" Inspired by Frank McCourt’s Angela's Ashes, and Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle, this author has been chipping away at her sassy memoir for 20 years, consistently taking relative courses at Trent University, University of Toronto, Fleming College, and workshops offered by The Writers' Union of Canada. In 2011 a yearlong bi-weekly evening course, A Novel Approach to Memoir, facilitated by Susan Reynolds, produced a rough first edition in time for her mother's 70th birthday. Once Kiely digested feedback she applied some suggested changes, polished her manuscript, and reached out for a professional edit by Ruth Walker of Writescape.ca A brilliant new cover was designed by Robyn Barton of

Since 1994

Barton Creative. At long last the file went to press, and Kiely's books were ready for pick-up on February 15th. Her entry reached the Independent Publisher competition coordinators, The Jenkins Group, in Traverse City, Michigan, a day before the deadline of February 23rd. On April 10th when the winners were posted, Kiely asked her husband to review them while she paced holding her breath. When he looked up and said, "Lovey, you won, you won Silver for nonfiction, Canada East Region!", tears tumbled down her face - all the years of dedication, perseverance, and hard work had finally been validated.

The author enjoys doing readings and speaking engagements, and No Poverty Between the Sheets is a gem for book clubs. This book is currently available at: Books Galore - Port Perry, Kent Bookstore and Coles - Lindsay; Chapters and Hunter Street Books Peterborough; Celtic Connections - Lakefield; Zen Den - Bobcaygeon; and The Book Lady - Fenelon Falls. It is offered at Peterborough, Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Brock and York Region Libraries, and from the author.

The 23rd annual Independent Publisher Book Awards ceremony took place on May 28th, 2019 at The Copacabana in New York City. Medal winning books are listed from around the world: five Australian states, seven Canadian provinces, forty-two United States, District of Columbia and Guam, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, and seven winners are from the United Kingdom. Gold, Silver and Bronze IPPY medallions were awarded in 85 national, 24 regional, plus 11 e-book categories. This year's contest drew 4,500 entries. (www. independentpublisher.com)

"I couldn't put this book down! I started laughing on the very first page and couldn't wait to get to the next paragraph. What also impresses me is Kiely's style of writing which is so honest and down-to-earth."

Jim Barnes, Director of the Awards, says, "The creators of our IPPY medal-winners are truly out to make a difference. With inspirational storytelling, independent publishing is all about compassion for people and dedication for improving the world. Congratulations to all medalists for their independent spirit!"

CHEX Television Alumni/CTV forecaster, Dave Devall, says,

Weather

Actor/Author/Comedian, Neil Crone, says, "A lovely read through. Very conversational, and all those wonderful people are painted beautifully. Kiely's love for them shines through on every page." Author/Equestrian, Hugh Morshead, says, "Kiely tackles a hilarious heritage with both hands on the reins and sparks flying from her spurs!" No Poverty Between the Sheets is the first of a trilogy series. The sequel title, The Ricochet Rodeo, is sited to launch towards the end of the year, and Kiely's third book, The Heart of a Horse, in December 2020.

Those Were The Days

“A Circle of Love”

For the past dozen or so years my wife has spent the entire month of July in Windsor visiting with her siblings. I would drive Kay there and sometime around the first of August drive back and bring her home. This year she decided not to go, possibly because of her and my advanced years, but mostly as Kay explained at length, she did not want me driving the long distance there and back alone. It really didn’t bother me but it was her vacation therefore her decision. I knew she wanted to go but not for an entire month so I suggested we go together, get a motel for a week, and visit with as many relatives as we could then drive home together. She thought that was a great idea so we went ahead and made the reservations and arrangements. We arrived on Sunday, returning home the following Saturday and would you believe in the five days of visiting we met with twentyseven relatives, some whom we had not seen in over twenty years? Nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, out-laws, you name it, and we embraced them all. Thank you to two nieces, Cathy and Lucette, who put on splendid dinners, inviting a house full; and to cousin Gloria who arranged for other cousins to gather with us at her house. The drives there and back were uneventful, the car ran beautifully, it was 34 degrees Celsius but the air conditioner in the motel room and car coped and we were comfortable the entire week. Although time did speed by, we had such a good time, grateful to many who worked very hard to put the memorable week together. So you know what? Next year, God willing and the weather fine, we just may do it again. The conversations were vast covering places we went, people we knew and memories we thought were long forgotten. We laughed when we discussed some amusing oddities that happened during our various childhoods, and surprised with exciting events that have occurred in recent years. Of course our families have lost members, all of whom we lovingly remembered, bringing to life the good times and sad times we shared way back then, and now. One of my cousins asked if I knew his wife had a crush on me when she was around twelve years old (blush, blush), yes I knew but I reminded him who she married. Another cousin broke up with laughter when I remembered her mother running out to proudly show my uncle a potty that held her very first - ah, poo-poo. We had good and bad in our family tree and I think we mentioned every one of them; Grandpa Sanders who was Windsor’s Park Superintendent and overseer of the famous Jackson Park, and a much discussed uncle who was the family alcoholic. My wife and I decided to go to Windsor for a week, we let a few relatives know, and how thankful we are to all twenty seven who showed up at the scrumptious dinners, the gatherings over coffee and for the memories were able to relive and create. To those who are reading this, take a week, visit the past and relatives you have almost forgotten - the reminiscing made us young again. Russ Sanders epigram@nexicom.net

your chest. It touches your soul in a way that only live music can; despite standing shoulder to shoulder with thousands of other people, you feel like that music - that singer - is singing just for you. The Boots & Hearts Country Music Festival offers music lovers the chance to enjoy a fantastic collection of industry bests all in one place. The festival which takes place at Burl’s Creek Event Grounds was held from August 8th to 11th, and the crew from Cottage Country Lifestyle Magazine were thrilled to be invited as Media to cover the event. In its eighth year, Boots & Hearts headliners like Maren Morris, Cole Swindell, Kip Moore, Miranda Lambert, Hardy, Tim Hicks and Jason Aldean graced the stage. The Boots lineup is bursting with a great mix of well-known names, and mustsee up-and-comers who pack the weekend with foot-stompin’ good music.

The festival brings together an eclectic collection of people from young to old, all gathering, laughing and dancing together in the name of good music, and a good time. Country fans partied through four days, enjoying live music everyday with intimate performances at the Front Porch Stage, and dancing the night away with the larger-than-life country music stars rocking the Main Stage. While you enjoy the music there is lots to keep you occupied in the festival event grounds. You will never go hungry with a massive

selection of food trucks – everything from healthy option wraps, to the best poutine, Greek and Italian food plus so many more options; even the Canadian Favorite – Beaver Tails for dessert! Interactive lounges offer a cushy space to relax in the sun with a beverage, and a beautiful sandy volleyball court keeps the game going all day. As the sun sets on Burl’s Creek your eyes are automatically drawn to the lights which emanate from the enormous ferris wheel and other rides that give you a birds eye view of the event grounds. There is definitely a certain adrenaline that flows through the crowd as the moon comes up and everyone gears up for the party of the summer. You always head home from Boots with new friends. While camping under the stars the party happens amongst all the tents and trailers. New weekend neighbors brought together by their love of country music leave as friends, with a cheers to beers and a plan to connect next year. We drove away from Boots and Hearts trailer in tow, sun kissed, exhausted (in the best way) and smiling. Until next year, Boots & Hearts; we can’t wait to come back.

Kawartha Chamber Business Awards of Excellence With the Kawartha Chamber Business Awards of Excellence and Social Gala coming up fast, the list of finalists for the Awards of Excellence has been released!

The Best Reasons to Play Golf in the Fall Fantastic temperatures After a summer of heat and humidity it’s refreshing to get out and play on warm sunny days without feeling like you are melting. With average daily temperatures stretching into the mid to high teens and sometimes a stretch of Indian summer, September and October are great times to get out and play. Spectacular views Courses are often in tip-top shape after a summer of fulltime maintenance, and gorgeous fall colours provide the perfect backdrop to a day on the links. Keep a close eye on your ball – even a perfect shot in the fairway can be lost in a pile of leaves. Less crowded With most of the cottagers having returned home for the season and the kids back to school, getting your preferred tee time is usually a breeze. Reduced rates With the departure of the cottagers comes the reduction of green fees and earlier twilight rates as well as membership specials for next season. You may be able to play the rest of this season for free if you sign up for next season – talk to your local club to see what they offer. There are some downsides to keep in mind: less daylight means less hours in a day to play and cooler temps at night can lead to frost delays in the mornings. Make sure you call ahead if you have an early morning time. By Shana Kelly of Kelly’s Glen Golf Learning Centre www.kellysglen.com

The Chamber would like to remind all nominees, whether they are a finalist or not, that they should be very proud of their accomplishments. Award recipients will be announced at the 20th Annual Awards of Excellence & Social Gala on Thursday, October 10th at Lakefield College School. Showcases Local Business Women Women’s Expo Peterborough is ready to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit of women in business again this September. In its second year, the Women’s Expo embodies their mission “To make a difference by creating a fun, empowering experience for all, alongside supporting small to medium businesses to reach their business goals, to educate and to support the growth of local business communities.” Founders Shari Pearce, Audrey McDonald and Linda Gratton – and with two new members this year; Crystal Wilkinson and Annie Carson, this unique trade show showcases local businesswomen. “We felt there was something missing in the community for women entrepreneurs,” explains Pearce when asked about the motivation for this event. Connecting You with Opportunity Fenelon Falls Chamber of Commerce The cooler evenings and shorter days remind us that summer is winding down and it’s time to get back into the fall routines. The same applies to the Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce (FFDCC), as we transition from the busy tourism season to connecting with our member businesses, associations and community groups. Creating opportunities for members to connect, learn and grow their business is one of the main goals of the FFDCC. One of the ways this is accomplished are the Chamber Member Events. Whether you’re a morning person, or prefer to relax in the evening after work, we have something for you. Member breakfasts are held once a month at a local member restaurant, or hosted by a business owner. These casual mornings are a relaxed way to share ideas and learn from each other over a cup of coffee. For the evening person, Cocktails & Conversations is the right mix of business and pleasure after a day at the office. Throughout the year there is occasion for more formal events, guest speakers share about a specific topic of interest or importance to the community. No matter what, the time spent away from the office will encourage and refresh you, and may even launch your next big idea. For more information about the fall lineup of Chamber Member events please call the Chamber Office at 705-887-3409.

Safety Tips The fall is a great time to get outside with our pets – it’s not too hot or too cold. Although fall is such an ideal time for pets temperature wise, there are still some important considerations that need to be taken into account during this colourful time.

Local Humane Society's

• Active pets need more food during the colder seasons. This helps generate body heat and keep pets energized. But make sure not to over feed your pet if they have a heavier body condition. Speak with your animal hospital staff about choosing the right diet for your pet.

Humane Society Of Kawartha Lakes 111 McLaughlin Rd., Lindsay 705-878-4618 • www.hskl.ca

• Watch out for snakes. Snakes preparing for hibernation may not like being disturbed so the chance of bites during this time is higher. Know what kind of venomous snakes are in your area and where they may be found so you can avoid those areas. • Some wildlife are also preparing for cold weather and may be more active than usual. Be aware of wildlife in your area and keep your pet away.

Lakefield Animal Welfare Society 2887 Lakefield Rd. • 705-652-0588 www.lakefieldanimalwelfare.org

Animal Rescue Krew (ARK) 3307 Lakefield Rd., Lakefield • 705-651-0069 Home Again Bancroft 613-474-3450 • www.homeagainbancroft.ca Peterborough Humane Society 385 Lansdowne St. E., Peterborough • 705-745-7676 www.peterboroughhumanesociety.ca

• Fall is mushroom season! Some of these mushrooms may be toxic to pets and produce life-threatening problems. Keep pets away from any areas where these might be growing. • As colder weather develops, outdoor cats are often looking for hiding places to keep warm. Unfortunately, under a car hood is a common place they use. To avoid seriously injuring cats, please bang on your vehicles’ hood before starting it to ensure no outdoor cats are hiding there for warmth. by Emily Cook Ontario SPCA and Humane Society www.ontariospca.ca

Patience, Partnership & Trust Our driveway was full! All vacancies were booked months in advance for the Inukshuk Farm two-day clinic featuring clinician, David Cowley. Welcoming this Canadian cowboy to Inukshuk Farm was a pleasure, and his Two Way Trust Horsemanship Clinic was both fun and educational. David Cowley practises his own brand of horsemanship based on partnership and trust. He was inspired to teach people and their horses to connect and understand each other, as he believes by helping people who own horses, he is also helping horses. David Cowley grew up on the Rafter Six Ranch Resort in Alberta and his story, along with that of his family, is told in the CBC Documentary “Back In the Saddle” - a story of this Alberta family’s struggle to keep their ranch and their dream alive. His connection and love of horses was evident as he instructed and assisted his students (horses and human) during the seven hours each day at Inukshuk Farm. David was the first and only person to ride a horse across a glass-floored walkway

Since 1994

(Glacier Skywalk in the Canadian Rockies), to ride to the top of the Calgary Tower with six different horses, and to ride into the John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. Now a clinician, and President of Cowboy Up Productions, he is sought after across the country to share his knowledge and unique way of training horses. David Cowley starts out with simple exercises such as carrying plastic bags attached to sticks, crossing tarps and fearlessly stepping through flapping noodles; to the more advanced second day, where riders and horses fearlessly carry flags over bridges, knock balls out of the way and so much more. He spent time teaching the riders how to build trust and be patient, waiting for the horse to arrive at the right answer. We aren’t ready just yet to trailer our horses to Alberta to walk across the Glacier Skywalk, but who knows what our Inukshuk Farm group will do next year! We do know that our horses trust us (and we them) a little more than we did before.

Fact or Treat Halloween Trivia

Halloween is almost here. Soon ghosts, goblins and ghouls will be knocking on doors looking for their share of yummy treats. Why not wow them with your Halloween knowledge – perhaps a Fact for a Treat, rather than a trick! Check out these fun and interesting historical Halloween facts. • Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death. • Jack O’Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday.

• The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human. • The fear of Halloween is known as Samhainopobia. • There really are so-called vampire bats, but they're not from Transylvania. They live in Central and South America and feed on the blood of cattle, horses and birds. • Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back over 2000 years ago. • Owls are associated with Halloween because, in Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches. To hear an owls call meant someone was about to die. • If you see a spider on Halloween, it is considered a good luck, as it means the spirit of a loved one is guarding you. • The 1978 blockbuster, Halloween, was only made in 21 days on a very limited budget. • The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with an 836 lb. pumpkin. • The first known mention of trick-or-treating in print in North America occurred in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta, Canada.

Do Hand-clapping Songs Improve Cognitive Skills? Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar? Was it you number one? Who me? Yes you. Not I. Then who?.....

I remember my sisters playing hand-clapping games. Facing each other, singing and hand slapping in various combinations to the beat. They tried teaching their little brother but he usually messed up. Little did they know that they were improving their motor and cognitive skills while having such childhood fun. A recent study at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev revealed that such activities improve cognitive function. “We found that children in the first, second and third grades who sing these songs demonstrate skills absent in children who don’t take part in similar activities,” explains Dr. Idit Sulkin author of the study. “We also found that children who spontaneously perform hand-clapping songs in the yard during recess have neater handwriting, write better and make fewer spelling errors.” She noted that these activities seem to be a developmental process that children go through from about age 7 to 10, after which they are abruptly abandoned and replaced by sports. Dr. Warren Brodsky, the music psychologist who supervised the study said Sulkin’s findings lead to the presumption that “children who don’t participate in such games may be more at risk for developmental learning problems like dyslexia and dyscalculia. There’s no doubt such activities train the brain and influence development in other areas. Interestingly, Sulkin also found that hand-clapping song activity has a positive effect on adults as well. “These techniques are associated with childhood and many adults treat them as a joke,” she said. “But once they start clapping, they report feeling more alert and in a better mood” This study should encourage teachers to add songs and movement to their classroom as part of play based learning. Improving motor and cognitive skills enhances all learning. Souce: e!
