Happy 25 Birthday to Us th

Cottage Country Connection is now 25 years old as of April 2019. To celebrate we look back on its growth!

Heritage is so important, and we work to bring you interesting information about the history of our area - our Cottage Country. The past 25 years have been years of great change and growth in the world, and certainly here in Cottage Country. Let us welcome the change, but also work hard to preserve our natural environment and our traditions. With its beginnings in April 1994 as a newspaper called The Causeway Connection - in reference to the James A. Gifford Causeway which spans Chemong Lake between Bridgenorth and Ennismore - it

embraced the symbolism of connection between communities, between the natural beauty and the people who live and play here. Founded by Andrew and Catherine Shedden, The Causeway Connection welcomed readers by engaging them in the history of the causeway - in the 1940's it was a floating bridge which could be tricky to cross at times - as well as offering tax tips, articles about local businesses and information on community groups and activities. The second issue in May 1994 gave a full history of the lake crossing before the current causeway. Chemong Lake was crossed by a

“scow” before there was a bridge. The first floating bridge was opened May 24, 1870 and cost $1,000 to build. In total there were three floating bridges before the current J. A. Gifford Causeway was built. The story continued in the June 1994 issue with a description of the June 23, 1949 opening of the current causeway named after James Alfred Gifford, a long time Reeve of Ennismore and Warden of Peterborough County. The newspaper was a success in the local community, and its readership and distribution expanded. In May 1996 the last issue titled The Causeway Connection dropped the Bridgenorth and Ennismore reference, focusing on the word “Connection” on its cover.

September 2003 was the last issue published by the Sheddens, and the paper now known as “The Connection” was sold ahead of the October issue to Chantal and Pierre Saville. The Savilles, a young energetic couple, moved their lives from Toronto to the Kawarthas looking for a change of pace. They ushered the paper into the Internet age, immediately establishing the connectionnewspaper.com website. The first issue the Savilles published in October 2003 had the banner “Serving the Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield”, and true to its roots, it had a photo of the J.A. Gifford Causeway on the cover. The Savilles operated the paper, expanded circulation beyond the current Selwyn Township, and developed a thriving website. They operated the Connection for over 10 years before deciding it was time to move on in January 2014.

As of 2019, Cottage Country Connection again has a new owner. Kelly Welsh purchased the publication with the vision of making the publication a place for readers to find interesting, relevant local information. An award-winning graphic designer, Kelly has been designing the publication since its newspaper days in 2014. As the new owner she promises nothing but the best throughout the stunning pages of the newspaper turned magazine. Kelly understands the significance, as well as the importance, of sticking to your roots - Cottage Country roots that is!! There have been many impassioned, creative and talented hands in making Cottage Country Magazine what you see today.

With new owners, 2014 marked more new growth for The Connection; the beginnings of social media. This brought a new dynamic and energy to the publication. Soon after, the publication name was changed to “Cottage Country Connection”, and in 2016 the newspaper took the leap to a high gloss magazine.

Currently the publication prints six issues per year. The issues are produced bi-monthly with a readership per issue of approximately 108,000. Distributed from Peterborough to Haliburton and from Fenelon Falls to Campbellford, with over 130 pick-up locations, and via Canada Post, there is an issue close to you.

In 2015, Cottage Country Connection received the Peterborough Chamber Marketing & Promotion Award of Excellence & in 2016 received the Kawartha Chamber Award of Excellence for Entrepreneur Innovation and a nomination for Tourism & Hospitality.

The magazine employs a team of friendly consultants who are happy to reach out to cottage country businesses and the folks who run them, working with them to meet their individual needs, and every member of the team lives right here in Cottage Country!!

This issue of Cottage Country Connection reminds us to look back nostalgically at the first 25 years of the Connection and stride forward to the future. That future includes, of course, the internet and the ability to communicate and inform far beyond what a monthly printed newspaper could do. Printing and graphic technology has changed with the help of computers, allowing us to present a higher quality publication. Striving to keep pace with new technologies which help us bring instant information, Cottage Country Magazine is active on social media – follow us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest. The magazine can also be read online, making it accessible anytime, anywhere at www.cottage.rocks The full magazine is available online and you can read it easily on any device, but we recognize that most people still like to hold a physical magazine in their hands when they read. This is true especially when they are relaxing on the dock at the cottage or in a country home. You can leave technology behind, and enjoy peace and quiet within the pages of our magazine.

History & Adventure on Pigeon Lake Pigeon Lake is on the Trent Severn Waterway, right in the heart of Cottage Country, within the City of Kawartha Lakes and just west of the County of Peterborough. A large lake, covering 13,200 acres, Pigeon Lake is known for excellent bass, walleye and muskellunge fishing. Pigeon Lake is quite shallow with an average depth of 3 metres, with its deepest point reaching 15 metres. Pigeon is a popular lake with a number of cottages and permanent residences, together with many resorts. Egan Marine uses Pigeon Lake as its base for the rental of houseboats, which provide exciting vacations on the Trent Severn Waterway. Before World War I large estate cottages were built in an area now known as Trent Lakes on Pigeon Lake. These include “Missisquoi on Sandy Point, built in 1913 by businessman and politician

Since 1994

Sir Edward Kemp. For modern-day cottagers the lake offers access to many day-trip destinations, excellent fishing and play. If an estate property is not in your budget there are many less costly alternatives for a place to call home on Pigeon Lake. Emily Provincial Park is also located on Pigeon Lake. The park has great facilities and over 150 campsites, which makes it an ideal place for families who wish to vacation on the lake. The park offers natural heritage programs, two sandy beaches and easy access to beautiful Pigeon Lake. Fed by the Pigeon River located near Omemee, Pigeon Lake is long and narrow, extending north from Omemee to Bobcaygeon where you will find Lock 32 on the Trent Severn Waterway. At Bobcaygeon,

Pigeon Lake meets Sturgeon Lake to the west at the northern top of the chain of large lakes. These access points make it a great lake to spend the entire day exploring. In the 1800s lumber was "king" in the Kawarthas, with large mills built in the 1820s and 1830s. In 1832, Thomas Need built the biggest lumber mill at Bobcaygeon on the Sturgeon Pigeon narrows. The mill proved to be very busy due to its strategic location. It continued to operate until the early 1900's, long after other mills in the Kawartha Lakes had closed. Need turned the mill over to Mossom Boyd to manage it in the 1840's as he continued on to other businesses. These men played a key role in development of the area, including steps taken towards building the famous Trent Severn Waterway.

Current Cottage Decorating Trends

Get Inspired!

“Everyone can identify with a fragrant garden, with beauty of sunset, with the quiet of nature, with a warm and cozy cottage.” Thomas Kincade

Summer is in sight and there is nothing more exciting than opening up the cottage, breathing in the warm air and imagining all the shared memories that lie ahead. From campfires to board games, cottaging evokes the nostalgia of either growing up cottaging or being inspired by the cottage look for your own home. So how do you work with current interior design trends when it comes to the cottage? How can you integrate some of the fresh new looks into your own cottage design without losing that real “cottage” feel that we so often crave at the end of a work week. For 2019 it just so happens that many of the new trends are easy design considerations for cottage country!

Floral Focus The traditional look of floral patterns couldn’t be more ideal for that cottage feel and is an exciting fresh new look we are seeing in all types of design environments. Perhaps it's time to take out that antique floral quilt, or spend a weekend antiquing for that perfect find. From homespun influences to retro patterns and prints, floral design is having a major influence in rooms everywhere. Consider the low-cost solution of framing a variety of floral wallpapers for a bedroom wall or bathroom. The easy part is this look encompasses everything from intense bold color to vintage finds, making it easy and budget friendly to inject florals into a few throw cushions or bedspreads.

Human-Kind Meets Nature This look is all about being organic, and our relationship to nature. What better place to be able to do that than at the cottage! Bringing in smooth, worn, medium-size stones as door stops, bouquets of wild grasses and branches or integrating natural, vibrant and warm paint colors. There are a multitude of ways to go biophilic and explore this natural trend which will allow you the connectivity to nature that we are currently craving.

Jewel Box Tones Good-bye grey and hello layered, rich deep tones, especially emerald green. Layer with dark blues and yellows. For this trend, the more you can make these colors pop the better - consider setting them against neutrals like black and white. Imagine a side chair in a cottage bedroom upholstered in one of these vibrant colors against a white wall; or a mirror frame spray-painted in Kelly green for extra pop. Incorporate beach towels in these tones to lend interest and layers to your bathroom area. Rugs are another great find, especially with those floral patterns we talked about earlier. Or maybe you prefer the whimsy of an old dresser painted in a fabulous jewel tone, with a pile of colored antique books layered on top. Lamp shades, artwork and collectibles are all ways to work in the jewel tone trend.

Joanne Clark Joanne is a design enthusiast with a passion for all things interior design. Her homes have appeared in publications such as Canadian House & Home, Style at Home and most recently Our Homes Magazine. Joanne has spent her career in senior leadership roles in Marketing and Public Relations for both the private and public sectors. As an avid gardener Joanne enjoys weekends on Stoney Lake and spending time with friends and family throughout the Kawarthas while taking in the odd game of golf.

Hand-Made is Home-Made Been meaning to sign up for that local pottery class? Now is the time. Feeling the earth and appreciating the sustainability of home-made items is making this trend a hip consideration for many. Hand-made pieces are super easy to find and work into cottage dĂŠcor. Think hand-made rugs which can be used as wall hangings, large comfy blankets doubling as shawls around the campfire. The future is about reusing and the maker movement has gained traction in our time of consumer fatigue. This has schooled us in looming, weaving and wood turning in pursuit of craftsmanship. Think clay, cork, bamboo and other natural textures where we give our planet a rest and embrace the art of something well made.

Comfortable Abundance Sounds basic right? But we are in a movement of comfort being a little more elegant. Consider the warmth of well-made antiques, finding a spot for family heirlooms which provide a sense of emotional comfort alongside that old well-worn couch and arm chair. We are living in rushed and deadline-driven times. This desire for comfort needs to wrap around us and give us what we are craving. Imagine that worn armchair in a quiet reading nook with an ottoman and floral throw blanket for a cozy nesting feel. This is a trend where secondhand items are centre stage. Cruise those cottage country garage sales for things which tell a story; look for traditional furniture and patterns. Ultimately all these trends can overlap, making it even easier to integrate into current cottage dÊcor. Don’t be afraid to let your choices tell a story. What better place than the cottage to weave in your new stories with the old? This is the beauty of reusing and recycling for more sustainable choices. So, mix those patterns, create and layer in texture - your 2019 cottage summer inspiration is all around you! Pictures from East of Eden Antiques

Your Backyard Nature Oasis Your backyard can come alive with beautiful birds and butterflies when you know the right plants and features to add to your garden. Your yard is a place to relax and enjoy, and enhancing it naturally to attract these beautiful species will create your very own nature oasis. Setting up the right environment to attract creatures can be easy to do with a little time and effort. Birds, butterflies, bees and other critters will come to your yard looking for three main things - food, water and shelter. They find this through trees, shrubs, grasses, vines and flowering plants which provide food, shelter and places to nest. The more plants the better! It is important to select native plants for your gardens, meaning plants which occur naturally in the area where you live. Native plants offer some of the best nectar needed by pollinators, including bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. They also require less maintenance than non-native species because they are perfectly suited to the soil and climate. Always refrain from using pesticides, including herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, etc. BUTTERFLIES • Select flowers in red, yellow, orange, pink and purple, as butterflies are attracted to these colours. • The plants you choose for nectar for butterflies should receive full sun from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, as they generally feed only in the sun. • Choose plants that continuously bloom, as butterflies need nectar throughout the adult phase of their life span. • Butterflies need a place to rest and warm their wings for flight, so find a sunny spot to place flat stones in your garden. • Some recommended native plants for butterflies include black eyed susan, blazing star, evening primrose, swamp milkweed, butterfly weed, wild lupine and bergamot. BIRDS • Birds are looking for food sources, so choose plants which provide fruit, seeds, sap and beneficial insects birds feed upon. • Place a bird bath in your yard to provide a place for birds to bathe and drink. Birds prefer shallow basins with a rough surface for good gripping. • Choose shrubs and trees that are dense enough to support nests. • Provide a spot in your garden for native tall and ornamental grasses to attract several species, and leave them to stand into the winter for a supply of seeds. Plant grasses such as big bluestem, indian grass and switchgrass. by Tracey Allison

Protect Your

Lake & Wildlife As cottagers we all share a deep love of our peaceful lakes. There are many things that you can do as a cottager to protect our beloved waterways and wildlife! Here are just a couple of quick tips: One way you can help is by avoiding phosphates and synthetic chemicals in toiletries, soaps, detergents & lawn maintenance. Phosphates remain in wastewater and end up in our lakes, causing nutrient pollution which can lead to harmful algae blooms. Phosphates commonly get into our water through lawn fertilizers/pesticides. Products containing synthetic chemicals and antibacterial chemicals also harm our natural system. What you can do: try switching conventional soaps for a natural castile soap, from synthetic, chemical-filled detergents for washing soda and plant-based options, and switching out antibacterial cleaners for simple vinegar and baking soda. You can swap synthetic beauty products for food grade, natural alternatives. This will not only make the lakes and environment healthier, but it will make your family healthier too! A wonderful way to protect our lakes is to naturalize your shoreline. This is a beautiful project for anyone who loves gardening. There should be a natural buffer of plant life between the lake and your lawn and there are many advantages to naturalizing, including helping with natural flood protection. Dogwood and other native shrubs will help with soil erosion. Consider native milkweeds and Joe-pye weed, which help our butterflies and pollinators. Black eyed Susan, wild bergamot, and foxglove beardtongue are great options in the Kawartha Lakes as well. Blue Flag Iris do well right at the shore line. You can also maintain natural structure of the underwater environment. Bass need rock outcroppings and vegetation to hide in and forage in for example. What you can do: Join a Native Plant Distribution Program! To learn more about safe natural products for the cottage you can visit my blog to learn how to make my homemade cleaners or grab one of my safe product PDFs. My Favourite Room

Porches and sunrooms are exciting projects for Nortech! We enjoy installing what will soon become your family’s favourite room where you will welcome your friends to make memories that last a lifetime. A porch is a special gathering place for chatting and sharing laughter. It draws families together around board games, decks of cards, and meals you can share in the fresh air with loved ones lounging on couches, and sprawling in a jumble of blankets on the floor. It is a place of meandering conversations, scaling from big decisions about which college to attend, to small bantering discussions like whose turn it is to wash the dishes. It also serves as a private sanctuary, where you can rest and dream with a book in hand, and the beauty of the natural world all around you. Are you hoping to entertain guests in your own outdoor space? Summer will bring sounds of thumping suitcases and exclamations of delight as loved ones are ushered in. Small children are special guests. Their squeals of delight fill the air as sopping wet swimmers dash through, leaving puddle footprints in their wake. Our beloved pets have their own places in our sunrooms as well, as they find their favourite spots on a comfy mat at our feet, or sunny perches on the window sill. As summer beckons, we all feel the tug to venture outside. Are you looking to create your own outdoor living space by adding a sunroom to your property? Nortech can help. A prefab-modular Sunspace sunroom allows you to increase your entertainment space, enjoying nature without the expense of a full-blown renovation. It is the perfect stress-free addition to all homes and cottages. If swatting mosquitos is growing tiresome, and you are thinking of enclosing your porch, Nortech has the solution. Nortech’s WeatherMaster By Sunspace window and door system opens to 75% screen ventilation and closes for 100% weather protection. By adding WeatherMaster windows to your space, you can enjoy comfortable outdoor living without toxic insect repellants. Without bugs or bees to interrupt, you can simply enjoy an evening meal or conversation in peace. Whether you are renovating an existing porch or sunroom, or planning to create a new outdoor living space, we can design a cozy, functional and affordable room for you. Your sunroom or enclosed porch brings much more than light and air - It brings loved ones and the rejuvenation of nature. It is a place where memories are made and tales are told, where friends are welcomed and bugs are banned. Nortech Home Improvements Inc. 705 738 0304 www.nortechwindows.com

It's spring at the lake. While getting the cottage ready for summer is exciting, for many of us it can be hard work. Putting in docks, cleaning up the property - all the raking! Keeping Your Hilltop View when Accessibility is an Issue In today’s market buying a cottage is not quite as easy as it might have been in the past. Seasonal vacation properties come with large price tags now. When you think about cottage properties, your mind automatically pictures a sunny waterfront with your family enjoying the warm sun and the shining lake. When many people see cottages perched atop a hill, they don’t like the idea of the hike up and down to the water and they can’t fathom the idea of carrying everything up the rocky hill-face every trip to the cottage. But cottage properties atop a hill are usually less expensive, so you can think beyond stairs and add a lift! Worried about how a lift will look? Inclined Elevation knows you head to the cottage to enjoy being surrounded by nature. The

track support structures of their lift have a footprint of only 1 to 8 square feet for each 20’ section of track; far less than stairs separated with multiple landings. The track also lets enough light through to support the growth of the vegetation underneath, keeping the natural look of your property. This is especially important on sandy hillsides where vegetation is essential to the stability of the slope. A lift has the ability to add instant value to your hillside property, by allowing easy access to the water, dockside entertaining and living becomes easy; transforming your cottage experience. Think panoramic views, cooling breezes and greater privacy; “With the lift, all the disadvantages of living high off the water become the advantages of living high off the water.” – Owner Lift 48 Steep climbs and many stairs can limit how those with mobility or health issues can use their hillside properties. A lift can add years of enjoyment with easy, pleasant rides up and down the hillside. “You have to look into the future, it’s ok when you’re 45 to carry things, but as you get older and your knees and hips go, it means you can use the cottage longer.” – Owner Lift 17 Inclined Elevation Inc. is located in Bracebridge, Ontario, was founded in 2006 by Dr. John Weinstein, PhD. They offer beautifully integrated solutions, custom designed for your property, and installed with pride. With an experienced team, Inclined Elevation is dedicated to building the smartest, safest, most reliable and durable, smoothest running, most attractive lifts on the market. GO BIG or Go Dry

Weather-wise, we don’t know what we’ll get until we get it. This past Spring has taught us that. With that in mind, it is important to take steps in our container planting to be prepared for weather extremes. If we get a hot and dry summer, it is practical to replace small pots (less than 14” in diameter) with larger, deeper pots. BIG pots hold a lot of soil and soil holds water. It’s quite simple: large pots dry out less frequently than small pots. Plants that do not experience the extreme stress/destress/stress/de-stress patterns remain lush, full of bloom and healthy. Therefore, instead of three or five small pots scattered on the stairs to your front door, consider one or two large pots (18”+) at the base of the stairs. A visitor’s eye will

be instantly drawn to it and its largesse will allow for spectacular and welcoming plant arrangements, with minimal care. In case of a wet, cloudy summer, do take care that any pot you choose has drain holes for excess water to escape. Yes, water will leak out of the holes and get on your deck or patio, but it’s just water. Sweep or mop it away. It is extremely important that plants not sit in excess water or in constantly wet soil. A large pot can be expensive to fill with proper Container Soil. Remembering that

20 Spring Into Summer 2019 ~ Cottage Country Lifestyle Magazine

soil holds moisture, find a balance between using “filler” and topping up with soil. If the environment is windy, add bricks or rocks to the bottom of the pot. If the need to move the pots easily is priority, then use unused nursery pots flipped into the bottom of the pot or pieces of large Styrofoam. At least 50% of the large pot should be soil to make the moisture retentive soil work in your favour. Do I Really Need A Lift for My Boat? This is a question we at R&J Machine get asked often. Whether you have purchased a new boat or personal watercraft, or you already have one, a lift is a great investment. Here are some reasons why a boat lift is so important to protect that investment, while extending the life of your boat. Boats can be stored in the water for the summer months, however over time this can cause deterioration of the exterior of your boat; blisters on the hull, damage to the lower unit as well as algae build up. By storing your boat on a lift, its appearance will be protected and you will save on costly repairs, improving its resale value. A boat lift offers protection against fluctuating water levels, and from storms and floating debris. A lift keeps your boat high and dry during a storm, and protects it from damage caused by banging against your dock, or taking on too much water.

water conditions. They offer standalone units for beside a dock, or overhead lifts for in a boathouse. R&J Machine has lifts which can operate manually, or with an A/C or D/C motor, depending on your shoreline power. Visit rjmachine.ca to see which boat lift is right for you. R&J Machine, 705-652-6731

A boat lift will also assist a driver when launching or docking during windy or rough conditions. A lift stabilizes the boat, and full length side guides and carpeted bunks guide your boat onto the lift safely. R&J Machine is local manufacturer of boat lifts for all types of boats/watercraft and

Cottage Country Connection would like to thank Russ Sanders for contributing his many articles over the years and sharing his fond memories. Russ and his wife have just celebrated 65 years of marriage and we at Cottage Country send our very best wishes. CONGRATULATIONS!!

Those Were The Days

“Times They Are A-Changing” I was in one of the larger mall stores when a noisy commotion down one of the aisles not only caught my eye but the attention of quite a few shoppers. A lady in her middle forties was arguing with a boy we assumed was her son. The boy, approximately fourteen years of age, was shouting at his mother using language spotted with four letter adjectives. As he ranted on, the mother appeared ashamed but more so frustrated. I started toward them as did a couple other enraged shoppers, all of us wanting to belt this kid across his swelled head; but in today’s world that is a no-no, if we intervened then we would be subjected to arrest. What could the mother do? Maybe kick his behind from here to kingdom come but again a no-no. If the mother severely reprimanded the boy then she too would be arrested for assaulting a minor, even though it is her own foul-mouthed son. Someone once said “without discipline there is only anarchy” and in a small but significant way, it was being acted out right here in the store. When I was that age the thought would never enter my mind to sass my parents in such a manner. No son or daughter in our generation, and generations to follow, would even consider talking back to their parents that way, or, for that matter, to anyone in authority. During my early teens police cars were all black with a tall aerial on the left front fender and an aerial on the right rear fender. We could recognize them coming from a block away and we usually stood still to see where they were going; or simply disappeared, not because we did something wrong but because both young and old recognized the law as the ultimate authority. When the bell rang at school, we lined up to get to class and if a teacher told us to quietly take our seats that is exactly what we did, after all, teachers were there to give us an education so how dare any of us question when we were told to do something. Did I ever get physically disciplined? I sure did. Dad tanned my hide because I stole some pillows off Mrs. Barnier’s porch and hid them in an underground bunk I had made. Call the police? No way, I deserved the punishment and to this day I still remember the lesson I learned. I am not advocating physical harm, discipline can come in many different forms. I was born during the Depression and raised witnessing the awful events of World War II. I was taught the lessons of want, need, have, appreciate, respect and love - lessons today's generations seem to have forgotten. Oh, I know some will call me an old guy out of touch with the world, but there is a song with words “times they are a changing” and I fully recognize over the past years there have been drastic changes, I just do not have to agree with them. Why “Victoria Day”? Many Canadians consider 24 May – or “May Two-Four” – the unofficial beginning of summer each year, although the summer solstice does not occur until late June. By May, however, the weather is warming, snow is all or mostly gone, new plants are sprouting, tourist sites are opening, and Canadians who have been confined by winter begin to venture out on drives and trips – thus making it an ideal time for a long weekend. The origin of our 24 May holiday dates back to 1837, when young Queen Victoria came to the throne of the United Kingdom – she was born on 24 May 1819. The British and British North Americans traditionally celebrated their monarch’s birthday with military parades, reviews, and other events. Victoria’s ascension, however, was seen as an opportunity to create common ground between English and French citizens in Canada; both peoples perceived loyalty to the monarchy as a differentiation between Canadians and Americans. In 1845, the Province of Canada’s legislature declared the Queen’s Birthday to be a public holiday; it was held on the actual date, or on the next day if the 24th fell on a Sunday. Peterborough, like most Canadian communities, marked Victoria Day in style – with closed shops, parades (often organized and led

Since 1994

by local militia units or the fire brigade), banquets, public steamboat excursions, and fireworks. While most Victoria Days went well, occasionally holiday events went awry: in 1855 the guest Cobourg Fire Brigade returned home early and abruptly from Peterborough, somehow having been insulted during a controversial hose competition with their host brigade. After Queen Victoria’s death in 1901, her birthday remained a public holiday in Canada. In 1952, Victoria Day was changed from 24 May and fixed annually as the Monday before that date, thus creating the long weekend of today. 1957 saw the Canadian government designate Victoria Day as the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II also, although her actual birthday is 21 April. Whether you spend your Victoria Day opening a cottage, travelling, or at home, we all can look forward to the imminent arrival of summer’s warm and sunny days. Contracting Work

You Need lt Done Right Summer is almost here and it’s time to get your projects moving. Should you do it yourself or hire a professional? Hiring a contractor can be more stressful than the project itself. Follow these simple tips to ease your stress and enjoy your project. Draft your plan: Write out a scope of the work and the responsibilities right down to the clean up. Educate yourself first. There are great web sources available at your finger tips. Check into all permits needed and be aware of any set backs that may come into play. Each quote should be based on your plan: Apples to apples, so hire a contractor who specializes in that trade. Use local trades where possible and just make sure they have a solid reputation and have been in business for some time. When you get a written quote (not an estimate!) make sure to check that materials and labour are included in the quote. If using multiple trades, ensure all insurance and WSIB are current for each trade being used. Set a schedule with a start and end date and ask about a warranty. Set a clear payment schedule: It is very critical to set a payment schedule and down payment amount. Only a small deposit, if any, should be required. Contractors, good reputable ones, all have accounts to buy materials. Payments should be based on stages in the project to completion. NEVER pay up front and never pay in full until the project has been completed and agreed upon by all parties involved in the initial quote. What If…? Determine how any unforeseen problems will be handled and an alteration to the contract should be made if needed. Sub Trades: If sub trades are being used, determine who is paying them - you or the contractor you have hired (as they are the sub trades being utilized by the main contractor). A contract with a description of details on materials, labor and the process for the project will be necessary for any sub trades. Tips to find the right contractor: • Ask trusted friends and family members for recommendations • Post on Facebook asking for recommendations • Look for local and specific knowledge trades - most good contractors are busy, so be prepared for that. • Ask potential candidates you are considering to share before-and-after photos of similar projects • Ask if they supply the materials or labour only? • Ask who is responsible for getting permits and how much? • Ask if drawings are needed and if so is there a charge and who pays? • Make sure you get a Quote and not an Estimate. • Have a clear time frame with your contractor and a schedule commitment • Get three quotes and remember cheap is not always the best choice • Keep track of progress and payments based on stages of completion • Do a PDI (pre-delivery inspection upon completion of the project) If you follow these steps, your project should be all you hoped it would be. HitcHinge: Safer & Easier Andy Assinck decided there needed to be safer and easier ways to install and remove docks every season. After 35 years as a design builder in the Kawarthas, Andy developed a simple but revolutionary dock coupling system that is self-supporting, child and pet friendly; plus, silent! The HitcHinge offers a simple process that supports the ramp/ bridge loads in alignment while actuating from above decking with a single tool. The hinges are completely self-contained, that means no parts to lose, misplace, or drop in frigid waters. This also allows folks to remove and or install a dock with ease. “No need to swim after a lost part again!" says Assinck "The HitcHinge uses gravity instead of a balancing act between loads and flotation, counter balancing between wind, weight and waves to connect dock sections," says Assinck, owner of HitcHinge.ca. "Once installed on your dock or ramps, unlike traditional systems, you can make the gap small enough to become worry-free, safer for children and pets and still leave room for wave and wind movement, based on your location." HitcHinge is a well-engineered product, stamped and designed with inner bushings resulting in durability and silent operation. With "no metal on metal" there is little noise from the hardware when the dock moves with the waves, and wind equaling a quiet and peaceful waterfront. HitcHinge is used in pairs, and can be easily installed into new and existing docks, often replacing the hinges that are already there. There are a large selection of hinge components for mixing opposing halves, with a variety of bolt sizes and bolt patterns to meet your custom needs. "You simply place the hitch over the hinge and spin it in!" HitcHinge www.hitchinge.ca, dockhitchinge@gmail.com 705-933-8439

Hooked

Leisure Fishing with Pro Angler Mike Williams

Memories of a Lifetime As far back as I can remember I get anxious with the anticipation of a new fishing season. From the very first sunfish I caught off the bridge my grandfather Wellington built at our cabin on Fox Island, to looking forward to fishing Spring crappie with my kids - it has always brought me the excitement of a child on Christmas morning. Always wondering what awaits me, what fish I will catch? What memories will be made? What new friends I will meet? Maybe this year my partner Duane Jacobs and I can return as CSFL Team of the Year and Classic Champs; or maybe this is the year Josh Westerink and I can combine the most fun on the water with winning the FLW Canadian Championship. I say this every year, but I don’t think I have ever been more excited for a season to begin. I have been very fortunate with help from family and friends to be able to fulfill two lifelong dreams; owning my own fishing guide business, Williams Outfitters and becoming a successful tournament angler. Over the last couple of seasons it seems like all of this hard work and dedication is paying off. I have been blessed to have people come into my life who believe in me enough to graciously offer help in the way of sponsorships. What started with a chance meeting on Stoney Lake with a friend from school - Deborah (Paris) Lineberry, has turned into a great partnership, and started the ball rolling for me. Being sponsored

Since 1994

by Paris Marine has led to other prominent fishing companies coming on board. I went from running an old boat, to a new deal with Crestliner, and am now running the new PT20 fully loaded with Power-Poles and the latest Garmin electronics. This also led me here to Cottage Country Magazine, writing an article and promoting my company. This offseason I was also lucky enough to hook up with Daiwa, Kistler Rods and Livingston Lures, and I look forward to promoting all of my sponsors every chance I get through tournaments, shows, and guiding clients. I wish to share all of the knowledge and experience I have gained over my 20 years on the water. If you are looking for an unbelievable fishing experience, visit my website and check out our availability and packages. If you are looking for more information on the products offered by my sponsors, or just want to chat about your latest catch, all you have to do is look me up, friend me on facebook, or simply approach me! I will always have time for a fish story or just a chat. See you out on the water and best of luck on your next fishing adventure! The Kawartha ATV Association

Ride With Us

30 Spring Into Summer 2019 ~ Cottage Country Lifestyle Magazine

Explore Cottage Country

Are you new to the area, visiting over the summer or just looking for a new place to ride your ATV or Side by Side? The Kawartha ATV Association (KATVA) has the trails for you. Every year thousands of people travel to the Kawarthas to ride the KATVA trail systems. KATVA is the largest ATV club in Ontario with over 1500 annual members, and they have two unique trail systems they manage in the City of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough County. If you are new to riding and are looking for some nice easy rural trails, start with the Victoria Rail Trail Corridor. The VRTC is 84 kms of railway bed that connects to the Haliburton Rail Trail just north of Kinmount. You can take a nice scenic ride on your ATV from Fenelon Falls to Haliburton Village for lunch, and return back to Fenelon Falls to do some shopping right in town, or take a detour off of the VRTC into the Somerville Forest Tract. The Somerville forest is a 6000 acre block of pine compartments that are actively forested. Most of these trails are suitable for beginner or intermediate riders, but there are a couple of more difficult trails for those who are more experienced, and are looking for a more technical ride. If you are looking for something a little more challenging, check out the 5 Points trail system. The trails here are tailored to the more intermediate and expert riders, and are made up of everything from old logging roads to rocky ridges and mud holes. They are by far the most popular trails in the Kawarthas. The 5 Points trails are located in Trent Lakes, a municipality of Peterborough County, and run through

Since 1994

mixed parcels of crown land and private land, including a 104 acre property that KATVA purchased in January 2019. The 5 Points trails have been around for many years and are a main attraction to all motorized trail users, including off-road trucks, off-road motorcycles, and snowmobilers alike. KATVA also has a long standing reciprocal agreement with Haliburton ATV Association including their chapter clubs, Algonquin West ATV Club and Lake of Bays ATV Club, or as they call themselves the “Family of Clubs”. The most recent addition to the family was Quad Niagara, which operates a trail system in the Welland area. This reciprocal agreement means that members of these organizations have the benefit of enjoying each others trails at no additional costs. This agreement has been in place for almost 10 years, and continues to be the most successful partnership between ATV clubs in Ontario. With the warm weather quickly arriving we can’t wait to get out on the trails. It’s a great way to feel immersed in nature, and take in the scenery of the area – and maybe a little wildlife too! Dog Agility Look at the grins on each of their faces!

They love it!

Agility as a sport has been around since the mid-80’s. With each passing decade, the game has become faster and more challenging with an emphasis on FUN! I warn all of my students prior to starting this game with your dog that it is so addictive! It’s why I own the business; to pay for my addiction! This game really builds the element of teamwork between the dog and handler. I think my favourite part of teaching a new team about the sport is when the dog completes an obstacle and looks back at their handler to "ask" what's next? That's the moment the dog has fallen in love with the game, and it inspires the owners to keep playing. There are different games within the sport which offer challenges

to both the dog and the handlers. Each course can be made up of a series of jumps, tunnels, a teeter, A-Frame and weave poles. The goal is to complete the course with no faults, and if you are a really serious competitor, the fastest time. Most of our students play for the fun of it. It's a great way to keep both physically and mentally active. I have a student who has been playing with us for over a decade with different dogs and she is in her late 80's. I keep telling her she is my hero. I want to be able to play with my dogs until my body won't let me. Because agility is played with the dog off leash, it's a great way to build that off leash control that all of us dog owners crave. The dogs learn to work with you, not against you, and because of the bonding

that naturally occurs through training, the dogs want to work for you. They learn that you are a lot of fun to be with. The sport is demanding on a dog's body and mind. Therefore it's not just a great form of exercise but also a great source of mental stimulation. As you progress as a team, the dogs are required to learn to problem solve and make split second decisions that will benefit the team as a whole. Have a dog that's bored? Getting into mischief? Agility will solve a lot of those issues. What's nice is that any breed can play including mixes. Keep in mind though that some dogs physically aren't built to be agile but I do know of some Mastiffs and Great Danes that play. Recently we've had a beagle join the program. She is awesome.

Since 1994

We've recently revamped our training program to allow puppies to start learning the game at a young age. We are still careful to protect young, soft joints, so we start the dogs using obstacles that you can find around your household. For example, empty water jugs to teach distance skills and collection cues, toilet plungers for "weave poles", broom handles for "jumps". You are limited only by your imagination. Paus-n-Train offers agility classes year round. Classes are 1 hour per week for 6 weeks with an after tax total of $152.55. You can register online through our website at: www.paus-n-train.com.

Showing Horses Competing with horses includes sacrifice. A friend and I have asked each other over the years, “Would we prefer to go on a vacation? Or attend this horse show?” The answer is: “The horse show.” Competition has changed since my friend and I started out. There was a day, when competing at an American Quarter Horse show could exclude the entourage of trainer, the inclusion of 4-day camping fees, stall fees and large exhibitor fees. So why do we do it? Competition motivates us to improve our horsemanship skills, thereby increasing the partnership we have with our horse and improving their ability to perform certain maneuvers. There are so many disciplines and levels within the spectrum of 'showing horses' that this editorial can only address a tiny sector. This is an attempt to explain the wonderful world of competition with horses.

to Lindsay Central Exhibition Grounds in 2019. Spring Classic May 17-20; Summerama June 29-July 3; Summer Circuit August 9-11. Be a horse show spectator and make a difference for someone! Janice Ecclestone, Inukshuk Farm, 1940 Birch Island Road, Selwyn 705-652-0578, inukshuk@nexicom.net New Website www.inukshukfarm.ca

Riders and their horse attend horse shows to showcase their partnership and ability to perform under pressure with others in their chosen discipline. Competition can be great for all ages, and my favourite shows have included both children and adults with big smiles and a lot of “try” as they compete! The partnership is what stands out; often the rider does not own the horse, or train the horse, but they ride the horse and they have a connection! Then there are those special cases where the owner, rider and trainer are all one! And that is a lucky horse. My favourite memories of horse shows include shows (and there were many) my mother attended. She didn’t groom or ride or train, but she did offer the best loving support, sitting in her lawn chair and just watching. Dedicating this to my mother “Leona (McLean) Wolfreys” (May 8, 1923 – December 27, 2018) A true horse show spectator and supporter of the sport! Adopt Some

Senior Love

Imagine sleeping in on a Saturday morning with a warm body curled up nearby emanating a musical masterpiece of soft snuffles and snores. Or, a Sunday afternoon spent puttering around the garden while your sidekick soaks in the sunshine, content to leave her digging days behind. Truly, “age is a work of art.” Love and loss only strengthen the joyful spirits, dignity and timeless beauty of senior pets. For those of us who’ve adopted a senior, or enjoy the love of a senior pet, it is an amazing experience that can change our outlook and attitude towards life. An unbreakable bond Forming a strong connection with a pet has little to do with the animal’s age at the time of adoption. Adult animals make trusting, loyal companions. Many seem to understand they’ve been given a special “second chance” and form extraordinary bonds with their new families. Senior pets often make ideal companions for seniors. Adult animals are more likely to be calm, and more easily managed than younger pets. Families with children can also benefit from adopting a mature pet who interacts well with kids, especially if the children are too young to safely handle a younger pet. Puppies and kittens may nip and claw, which can frighten or injure children, and senior pets are often wonderful teachers of patience, gentleness and respect.

Add to their life – and yours! Adopting a senior not only adds years to your senior pet’s life – it adds years to your own! Studies show that companion animals help people live healthier, happier and longer lives. A senior pet’s joyful spirit, acceptance of limitations, and ability to live in each moment fully and completely with love and gratitude will make your own life that much sweeter. Ready, set, adopt! Senior pets have much to offer, including plenty of love. Instead of passing by older pets at our adoption centres, take the time to stop and visit our golden oldies. You may discover that you need a special senior in your life as much as she needs you! Emily Cook, Ontario SPCA www. ontariospca.ca

Old souls and young hearts Adult animals can be every bit as sweet, cute and playful as their younger counterparts who quickly leave behind their physical baby traits. While it’s hard to determine what kind of characteristics a puppy or kitten will develop, it is much easier for potential adopters to get a sense of a mature animal’s qualities – including size, temperament and personality. For many, busy schedules prevent them from being able to provide the kind of constant care that younger animals require. Mature pets don’t need as much exercise and stimulation, and dogs are typically housetrained, past the destructive chewing phase, and familiar with basic requests (e.g. sit, down). Adult cats are more likely to be litter box trained.

Dragonfly Snacks This is a fun little spring themed snack for kids to take in their lunches, or to take on a picnic; I’ve even seen them used as party favours. All you need is a clothespin (we used wooden), a snack sized plastic zipper seal bag, glue, a pipe cleaner, paint or markers, small googly eyes and some snacks. Fill half of the bag with one snack, and the other half with another – be sure to leave room to twist the bag in the centre. Decorate your clothes pin with fun colours, stickers and sparkles work great too. Slide the centre of the pipe cleaner into the opening of the clothespin and twist together to make antennae; add eyes to the opening end of the clothespin. When done decorating, clamp the clothespin over the twisted center of the snack bag. Voila! Dragonfly snacks to go. Emily Ireland

‘Summertime, and the Living is Easy’... Summertime, are your children learning? Most young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer break. According to the National Summer Learning Association (www.summerlearning.org), research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. Harris Cooper, professor at Duke University states, “We found that kids do forget over the summer. Across the board, all kids lose some math skills. … We also found that summer learning programs have a significant positive effect.” His research showed that small, individualized programs with parental involvement were the most effective. Summer is a great time to learn, especially for the younger children, because it is a less stressful time where programs can be individualized. What can parents do to improve their children’s reading abilities? James Kim, assistant professor at Harvard University has studied this question. “We’ve learned that if you are trying to improve children’s reading abilities, you have to provide books that match the child’s reading level and interest and you have to know how to

Since 1994

monitor comprehension”. Just providing books without guidance, especially for young readers, is not enough. “Reading is most effective when parents… can provide reading guidance and make sure that kids understand what they are reading. Reading can be both a solitary activity and a social activity that fosters learning and recreation.” You need to ask questions about the story and encourage the child to ask questions. Repetition is very valuable to the child. Have them reread the story, especially the challenging passages. Discuss the story and ideas presented in the book. Ask your child to summarize and sequence the story. These are a few of the relatively simple techniques that reading specialists use to increase fluency and comprehension. Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do. Dance and sports programs enhance body awareness and fitness. Why not include a summer learning program for your child this year and add brain fitness as well? Brian Nashman, Director Scholars Education Centre, Peterborough

Keeping the Shine on Your Golden Years in Fenelon Falls

Seniors: Living the Good Life in Cottage Country Whether cottage country has always been home, or you have chosen to trade the big city for a more relaxed, unhurried way of life, there is one thing you have in common with the rest of our growing senior population – a desire for retirement to be healthy, wholesome and fulfilling. You may be wondering how best to stay active and engaged. Municipal swimming pools have swim and aquacise programs geared to seniors. Year-round and seasonal walking groups are available in many areas, and golf courses abound. Search out lawn bowling clubs and bowling alleys. There are countless opportunities – you only need look for them. Seniors Clubs run by and for seniors in search of activity and socializing can be found in many communities. Jean Smith, president of the Senior Citizens’ Club of Fenelon Falls, took time out of her busy schedule to speak to us about what the club has to offer. “We have SAGES (Safe And Gentle Exercise for Seniors) twice a week – it’s so important that we do what we can to stay limber, in order to help with balance, heart health and overall well-being,” she told us, adding “we also have line dancing and shuffleboard.”

Meals on Wheels, driving for Community Care or the Cancer Society, and helping at other local clubs and groups. Jean is a valued volunteer at the Fenelon Falls Legion and at her church. Jean identifies the major challenges for rural seniors: limited shopping opportunities, affordable housing and transportation. The club has always been front and center when it comes to advocating for improvements in these areas. “It’s all about providing the best quality of life for the seniors in our community.” The club’s membership of 105+ is supported by about 20 volunteers, all seniors themselves, and if volunteering is your thing, you would be welcomed with open arms. Jean says she got involved in the club in 2002. “I started playing cards there and began helping out. I just love people, and I can’t sit home and do nothing,” Jean told us. And this busy lady shows no signs of slowing down yet – after all, she is only 89 years old. The Senior Citizens’ Club of Fenelon Falls is located at 58 Murray Street, Fenelon Falls. Follow them on Facebook, call 705-887-7007.

“We offer much more to keep our seniors engaged. Socializing is a very important aspect to overall seniors’ health, and we have cards and bingo on a regular basis. These are a great reason for folks to get out of the house and meet people,” she explained. The club provides monthly lunches through Community Care and hosts fundraising events such as garage sales, bake sales and concerts. They also give back to the community, including providing financial support for the Langton Public School Breakfast program, and hosting Breakfast With Santa for over 200 children at this annual kick-off to Santa Day. Many of the club’s members also volunteer their time to programs like

For the Salad:

1 clove of garlic, finely minced

2 cups of baby spinach leaves,

2 tablespoons of honey

washed and dried

Juice of half a lemon

1 cup of microgreens

1 tablespoon of poppy seeds

1 cup of cherry tomatoes, halved

Kosher salt to taste

2 extra-large eggs, hardboiled and sliced

2% milk, enough to thin out the dressing

4 rashers of bacon, cooked and chopped

Instructions 1. Prepare the dressing: Place the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic, honey, lemon juice and poppy seeds into a small bowl and whisk together until smooth. Adjust flavour with salt. Adjust thickness by adding milk, about 1 tablespoon at a time. Transfer dressing into a squeeze bottle for ease of application.

2. Prepare salad: Begin layering salad ingredients into a plate or flat-bottomed bowl starting with the spinach. Add a small handful of microgreens, a few cherry tomato halves, some egg and a sprinkle of bacon. Drizzle with a tiny bit of the dressing. Repeat process two additional times.

3. Garnish the salad with a bit of black pepper if you wish and serve immediately. Present additional dressing on the side, if desired.

SOUR CREAM COFFEE CAKE Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 325°F with the rack in the middle position. Lightly grease a bundt pan with butter and set aside. 2. Sift together flour, baking powder and baking soda and set aside. Place all of the topping ingredients into a separate small bowl, toss together and set aside. 3. Cream butter and sugar in a medium-sized bowl using a hand mixer until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and beat on medium until incorporated. Alternate adding thirds of the flour mixture and sour cream into the egg and butter mix. Combine well.

Kick Off the Start of Summer with the Kawartha Chamber Summer in the Kawarthas is one of our favourite times of the year – the area is bustling with visitors and residents alike and there are so many great events taking place! Before we get in summer mode, we have two great events planned. You won’t want to miss them – they’re the last events we have planned until September. During July & August, we support community events in the area – connecting with our members and the community, and strengthening tourism in the Kawarthas. The first event we have planned in May is a Business Owners Sharing Solutions (B.O.S.S) panel discussion on Cyber Security. The event is on Wednesday, May 15th at Beachwood Resort (3043 Beachwood Drive) from 7:30-9:00am. At the start of the year, we asked our members which professional development topics they would like to see our B.O.S.S panels discuss, and one of the most popular topics was cyber security. With cybercrime emerging as a big threat to small business, it’ll be a great session for small business owners to attend, both Chamber Members and non-Chamber Members alike. Our panel will focus on cyber security concerns specific to small business, such as website security, email and telephone scams, and online banking security. Then, to kick off the start of summer, we’re hosting a Business After Hours: Stoney Lake Boat Cruise with Stoney Lake Cruises (610 Mt. Julian-Viamede Road) in June! The cruise is on Wednesday, June 19th from 5-7pm. Refreshments will be provided by Burleigh Falls Inn. We begin boarding at 4:30pm. The boat departs at 5:00pm sharp. To register or view pricing for these events, visit KawarthaChamber.ca/Events or call 705-652-6963. Thanks to our Professional Development Sponsor, Lynn Woodcroft, Sale Rep., Royal LePage Frank Real Estate and our Networking Event Sponsor, Blue Diamond Window Cleaning.

Two Friends,

One Inspired Dream Nearly six years ago, I started as an esthetician at the massage clinic in Bridgenorth where Sue was working. Our connection was instant. We had both attended Fleming College as mature students, and were working moms with teenagers. We had similar views on health and wellness, continuing education, client care, and shared interests outside of work. Over the years we have grown into close friends, often dreaming together of the kind of health and wellness facility we would love to create. A place that exudes calmness, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere – where clients can fully relax and enjoy a variety of treatments with a personal touch. A place that offers a full range of therapeutic and spa services, from Registered Massage Therapy, Bowen and Shock Wave Therapy to Pedicures, Reflexology, Microdermabrasion, Facial AcuZone Reflexology (FAZR), and more. A space that inspires health and wellness on multiple levels. Well, the time for that dream to become reality is here. With the help and support of our family, friends and clients, we have recently moved to a new location, 1467 Chemong Rd., at

Since 1994

Chemong RV, under the new name Inspired Health and Wellness. We are excited to be taking this step towards our vision, and we welcome clients, new and old, to check out our new place. (Please note: enter the gates at Chemong RV and you can park right in front of our little yellow building.) So many exciting things are happening! Aside from setting up the physical space, we have plans to expand our essential oils and offer yoga classes, beginning this summer. We are developing signage, and a new website is under construction: www.inspiredhealthandwellness.ca. Social media will follow. Our contact information remains the same: Sue Nott, RMT, Bowen Practitioner (705) 313-0536. Julie Humphries, Esthetician, Reflexologist (705) 927-5499.

Saving for That

First Home It is comforting when I meet with younger Canadians who have not fallen into the debt trap and are starting to build their financial futures on a foundation of sound saving. For most of them, the early years of their careers will be spent examining where they will live and they are naturally drawn to buying a home. True, this has become much more challenging given the spike in home prices in recent years, yet home ownership is still achievable provided they keep an eye on affordability. The questions I often hear from these young savers is how to plan towards the time when they will put their down payment on the table?

The first step is to determine how best to save for this event. That will key off the amount of time between now and the home purchase. A short time frame will argue in favour of a near zero-risk strategy (such as a savings account, or GICs and other lower risk fixed income investments). A longer time horizon may allow for slightly more risk to be introduced, such as large cap equities. Where these investments are held will also be an important decision. While a bank account or straight GICs might seem simple, there will be tax implications from the interest earned, whereas if this money were

held in a Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA), the tax issues disappear and the individual still has the flexibility of drawing out the required down payment whenever they choose. Another option is to use the funds in a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), under the first-time home buyer’s program. While some younger Canadians struggle with the decision of saving in an RRSP versus putting money aside for a down payment, they can indeed do both and get the immediate tax benefits of making contributions to the RRSP while they wait for the big day. Of course, any money taken out of the RRSP for a home purchase has to be repaid, but it is still a useful option. At the end of the day, the most important thing for young Canadians to remember is to lay out a comprehensive financial plan that incorporates all of the options discussed. Buzz Off Mike Dunlop invented the Dragonfly Wingman, an eco-friendly alternative to the arm-flailing method of shooing away deer & horseflies. Deer & horseflies are visual hunters, the Wingman mimics the look and behavior of their most feared predator, the dragonfly. Simply clip on the Wingman, it waggles and bobs on its wire, imitating a dragonfly's natural quick, unpredictable flight patterns, to ward off deer & horseflies with the illusion of a threat.
