Searching for the
Perfect Piece of Land for Your New Getaway?
Marshall Homes offers tips to help you find your cottage country retreat If you’re planning to build in the Kawarthas, selecting the right cottage property is vital to ensure the successful outcome of your project. For most, the dream of owning a cottage is as much about your surroundings as the cottage itself. A spot that makes you feel inspired, relaxed and at home is ideal. But the land you choose for your custom cottage must also meet a number of practicalities, such as location and site elements. Striking the right balance between convenience, beauty and cost isn’t a simple task, but you can help narrow the field by keeping this simple criteria in mind. Read on for our best suggestions for finding a piece of land that you’ll love (nearly) as much as your new Marshall Home. - Imagine Your Ideal Escape and Create Your Checklist Before beginning (or continuing) your hunt for a property, build a springboard of search criteria. - Location, Location, Location That’s real estate’s number one rule, right? So let’s start here. One of the reasons we’re so bullish about the Kawarthas is access. While none of us is spared the snarl of traffic, the Kawarthas offer more routes and less traffic to cottage towns and lakes than heading up Hwy 400 to Muskoka.
6
July / August 2018 ~ Cottage Country Connection
When selecting the right spot for your future Marshall Home cottage in the Kawarthas, it’s essential to balance your dream of a remote getaway with the practicalities of everyday life. Think about favourite cottage villages and towns that offer the kind of amenities and fun you envision. How far do you want to drive? Weigh the pros and cons of a remote property with any time restrictions you may have. Remote may work if you plan to spend weeks at a time at the cottage. Something closer may be more practical if you’ll be a weekend warrior. Consider access to public utilities plus drive-time to shopping and emergency facilities like hospitals and fire stations. Factor in how much privacy you crave. Do you want a property with acreage or would you prefer a close, community feel? Look to your interests. Envision your ideal cottage vacation - do you see boating, swimming, hunting or hiking? If you prefer boating, a property with a dock or access to a local marina may fit the bill. If you love swimming or have children, a beachy spot along the shore might be a better fit. If a watery locale isn’t imperative, an off-water site can result in significant savings. - What Kind of Landscape Do You Envision? To help narrow down a location, decide on the physical landscape you want to be surrounded by. Do you want an agricultural feel, forested, or is it the wild, rocky terrain of the Canadian Shield that you crave?
Discovering Cottage Country

Create a checklist of site essentials. Water access a must? Do killer views top your wish list? Are you looking for a sloped property to accommodate a walkout basement? When you’re narrowing down the perfect property, a good local realtor can be your best ally. They’ll be able to answer questions about technical practicalities such as road access, easements and public utilities. While undeveloped land has a raw beauty that may make it appealing, it may also come with its own set of extenuating factors. A remote location can be a challenge during construction, making it tough (and costly) to deliver materials. Access to your cottage may be problematic in the winter months. If you plan on using the property during the winter, find out if the roads are maintained year-round. Ask your realtor about: • • • •
Access to public utilities. Where your water comes from? If it’s a well, is it reliable and potable (drinkable)? Easements or right-of-way considerations that could limit the amount of property you can build on or keep you from accessing it at certain times of the year. The topography of the land where you hope to place the cottage. Will you need to take any erosion-control measures? Or, if your site is particularly rocky, factor in the cost of excavating and preparing for the foundation.
Bonus Round: Here’s Where We Come In! Once you’ve purchased your property, the Marshall Homes team will come in and assess everything from zoning to septic tanks (if needed) and building permits. Need local approval? We’ll handle that as part of our custom package and fixed price commitment. It’s all part of our pledge to make custom easier for you.
your eyes and revisit each property in your mind. Which one stands out—makes you feel at ease and at home? Ultimately, building on a property that speaks to your heart, not just checks the spaces on your criteria list, will help make your Marshall custom cottage an even more perfect place to get away.
So go with your gut. After considering the pros and cons, go beyond your checklist, reflect on the distinct character of each property. Like every person, each piece of land has a unique look and feel. Close

Battling the Bite with Protective Plants Nature offers us so many great natural defences to the things that bother us. There are few pests more bothersome than the hated mosquito. Luckily we have options that you can grow in your garden that will help make mosquitoes buzz off. Lemon Grass – The smell that is given off when burning citronella candles or lanterns is actually the oil that naturally comes from this herbal plant! Also effective are: Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena, Lemon Basil and Lemon Thyme. Citronella Plant (Citronella Geranium or Mosquito Plant) – Widely known as the plant for keeping those pesky bloodsuckers away, this geranium has the citronella gene embedded in it to give us that lovely smell. Beebalm (Monarda) – An adaptable perennial that acts like an invisible shield for you. This plant gives off a strong incense-like odor that confuses mosquitoes and masks your smell. Crush the leaves to let out the fragrant oils locked inside. Lavender – It’s not just easy on the eyes, this perennial herb has a
12
scent we love to use in soaps and shampoos, but mosquitoes hate it. Marigold – You probably already know that most insects can’t stand the smell of marigolds, add mosquitoes to that list. The distinct scent of marigolds keeps mosquitoes at bay and is also great in your vegetable garden as a companion plant. Grow marigolds in containers that you can move around to your seating area or plant near your outdoor area. Peppermint – The strong scent that we love to infuse in our gum, toothpastes and drinks is not popular with mosquitoes. Grab a few leaves of mint, crush and rub on your body to give yourself a protective barrier. Rosemary – That’s right, the popular herb that adds big flavour to your food also keeps those little pests at bay too. It’s been used for hundreds of years for repelling mosquitoes. The oil of rosemary is also potent. By Vikki Whitney, Owner of Griffins Greenhouses www.griffinsgreenhouses.com 705-652-8638 or 1-877-647-4334

Paul Chester Evoking an Emotional Response Standing in front of a painting and giving it your full attention allows you to get lost in the feeling and emotion it bestows upon you. Art provides many a tool with which to speak directly to the souls of others. Paul Chester is one of those gifted artists that is able to take an idea and create it as a surreal, reminiscent work that speaks to that little memory bank in the back of your mind, telling yourself – ‘I think I’ve been here before’ Paul Chester is a contemporary impressionist, painting landscapes with both oil and acrylic mediums. He uses paint and glaze to build up the surfaces of the canvases and wood panels he uses, achieving a roughness that is indeed nature-like. You are instantly captured by Chesters artistry, his combination of brush strokes and painting knives creates such texture it leads the eye through the brilliance of the painting. “I enjoy using oil paint because it lends itself to being scraped and scratched, cutting

into the paint to reveal the colours beneath.” Says Chester. His subject matter is the natural world collected in memory from a walk or a simple Sunday drive; peaceful places and retreats – country fields, flowers, rolling hills, forests, horizons, cloud formations, and waterscapes. Paul, beginning with private lessons, studied painting and sculpture in art academies in Toronto and Paris and graduated from Ontario College Of Art in 1992. He has had 35 Solo Exhibitions and over 40 Group Shows across Canada, the United States and London, England and currently has a studio in Keene, Ontario. Paul aims to create an emotional response to what he sees in the natural landscape that surrounds his home and studio. Ethereal in nature, Paul is able to create images of landscapes and water painted from

memory and the experience of the moment “Painting for me is a poetic expression…a state of mind, rather than a photographic copy of nature. They are my visual diaries celebrating the beauty and peace found in nature.” To view more of Paul Chesters work visit http://www.paulchester.com

When Furniture Becomes Art Using 100-Year-Old Naturally Aged Barn Board
Finding contemporary furniture with the same durability and attention to detail as 100 years ago might seem difficult today. If factoring in sustainability, the choices narrow further - but a Peterborough Ontario business has a solution that marries the past to the present while keeping a keen eye toward the future. Gord Trask and partner Cindy Thompson set out to start their business, Sustain Furniture, considering the impact on the environment. Seeking a green resource for material, they quickly realized the potential of reclaiming wood from century barns. Finding an environmentally friendly finish was top priority for Gord who was in the fine woodworking industry for 6 years using harsh poisonous chemicals. “We believe that what you buy, what it's made from and where it comes from matters,” says Cindy. Confident that they found the right mix, Gord, who has 21 years experience as a licenced carpenter, set to work creating a line of wood furniture for every room of the house. “I love working with the fantastic character of barn boards, celebrating the impurities and reclaiming history, one piece of furniture at a time,” says Gord. “Barn board is completely different
Since 1994
than a veneer or newly milled lumber. The 100-year-old naturally aged beautiful tones are amazing and cannot be reproduced, every piece is truly unique.” While Sustain Furniture has an amazing product line to choose from, much of their business is custom-made furniture. Beds are their largest seller, although they craft everything from bedroom furniture to kitchen islands and everything in between. "If it's wood, we can make it," says Gord. "I can bring your ideas to life." The future of their product is also important to the pair. Their furniture is hand crafted for life and it won't end up in a landfill. Although they are an online business, should you wish to visit their shop for a behind the scenes look at their work, reach out to Cindy at 705-740-1100, she welcomes the opportunity to earn your business.

Lifting You Up When the Climb Has You Down
Cottage Lifts With fascinating landscapes abound in cottage country, structures are built where nature allows. Many properties remain water access, meaning if your cottage is also built on a hill or rock face you are carrying everything up that hill, every visit. Hillside homes and cottages offer great benefits - stunning sunsets, a breeze that keeps bugs away, and scenic views of the lake or landscape. Long steep climbs can make enjoying your property difficult. Families are less likely to make use of the waterfront when they have a long climb
Since 1994
back and forth. Steep climbs hinder accessibility, limiting who can visit, and the age and mobility of owners who aren’t ready to give up the cottage experience. Cottage Lifts, a business with more than 25 years of experience, can help you. Rekindling your love of your property with a lift system. Cottage Lifts has been working continuously to improve their lifts, thereby creating a superior product which is tailored to your property and its individual requirements. Always thinking of safety, Cottage Lifts have included a new braking system, this is in addition to the four independent safety controls they already have. This new brake is fully automatic and will stop a lift car before you even know you need to stop. Plus every lift comes
with remote control, capable of covering a quarter mile. In an effort to offer an off-grid lift, Cottage Lifts has been working on a prototype for about 5 years; and they are happy to announce it has been perfected! In their effort to find the perfect power source many options were tested, solar systems didn’t have enough energy, a battery system was too expensive, and a generator – expensive, large and cumbersome. Cottage lifts has now created a system that is totally independent of any conventional form of energy. It is a gasoline powered hydraulic system, has an electric start, and stops automatically at the top and bottom. You can find a demonstration model set up at Cottage Lifts showroom, stop in and take a ride! Complement your property by adding the features of a lift this season. Why A Park Model RV Makes Vacation A Breeze Owning a waterfront cottage may seem financially unattainable but have you considered a Park Model RV in an RV Park? Many RV Parks are located on water and can make your dreams of waterfront, recreational living a reality. RV Parks have come a long way from the “Tornado Target Trailer Park” stigma and should not be confused with a Mobile Home Park (year round living). If you aren’t keen on investing in an RV without first trying the RV Park lifestyle, many RV Parks offer rental cabins and cottages for you to enjoy on a weekend or weekly basis. Try it for a chance to get to know the Park and the options available for a Park Model RV to purchase. Waterfront or inland, shady, sunny, large, small, immaculately manicured or perfectly natural; campsites of every shape and size are available. There are hundreds of privately and provincially owned parks, offering seasonal stays. Security gates and park patrols keep your family, your property and privacy protected. The seasonal park allows you the opportunity to try a permanent site in a particular park without making the burdensome investment of a cottage. If you are concerned about too many people, that’s understandable but have no worries; enjoy your solitude, read a book on your deck or lounge on the beach - your kids can be swimming, riding their bikes, playing with their Park friends, socializing without a screen. Your partner can be entertained at this weekend’s Recreation Event. You can participate and socialize if you would like to and you can leave when you want to, return to the privacy of your own deck at any time. Visiting becomes a choice, not a chore. Entertaining becomes exciting not exhausting. A Park Model RV in a seasonal RV Park may be a solution to fit your budget, your lifestyle and your family. Discovering Cottage Country
Life is good - really good. I have spent most of my career working in and around Ontario’s glorious cottage country. I am an Ontario Land Surveyor. Your cottage property is your sanctuary - your paradise. It is the place where memories are built and ties with family and friends are solidified. But from a surveying perspective, cottage country is full of title and boundary issues that can play havoc with the peace of mind that should be associated with your cottage. Let me share the reality of some of the things I have seen. I have seen boathouses and cottages built on shore road allowances that are not part of the cottage lot. I have seen vehicular access cut off because the deeded right of way does not match with the physical right of way on the ground. I have seen boathouses, garages, bunkies and cottages built with the assumption that a hedgerow or a fence was on the property line - only to find out the fence was nowhere near the boundary. I have listened to countless cottage owners tell me where they believe the boundary lies - only to find out that they were 2’ or 10’ or even 100’ out. But, I have also been able to help each of these cottage owners. If there are problems that are uncovered during the surveying of a cottage property, Ontario Land Surveyors can offer solutions that will give you back your peace of mind. We can help you purchase the shore road allowance that your cottage lies on. We can help you sort out the access issues. We can help restore peace of mind and peace in the neighbourhood.
Since 1994
Not all properties have problems. In fact, the vast majority of properties are, from a surveying perspective, problem free. Even still, the benefits of surveying your property are many. Having confidence in knowing where your property lines lie on the ground is - maybe not priceless - but certainly valuable. My experience points to one BIG TICKET advantage to getting a survey of your little piece of paradise. Eventually you plan to either pass the property on to another family member, or to sell the property. Discovering there is an issue at the point of sale leaves you with several bad options. Let’s imagine the survey shows that the portion of the cottage actually lies on the shore road allowance. This may force a substantial reduction in the purchase price. You may lose the sale because the process to purchase that road allowance, although not incredibly costly, is going to take many months. Retaining the services of an Ontario Land Surveyor will give you the advantage of knowing if there is an issue that needs to be resolved. I have long told people that surveyors are much more than suppliers of plans. We are suppliers of knowledge. If you do purchase a survey for your little piece of paradise, in return you are not going to get a visible tangible item that you can admire and use every day. Instead, you will be purchasing knowledge and peace of mind. IBW Surveyors is very proud of part of that transaction. IBW Land Surveyors https://ibwsurveyors.com/ Advertisement

The Bliss
of Houseboating The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, you can hear the call of a loon in the distance – you sail the Trent Severn Waterway on a houseboat. With endless possibilities and attractions the Trent Severn offers 386 kilometers of canal, connecting Lake Ontario at Trenton to Lake Huron at Port Severn. While you travel the waterway going from lake to lake, passing through various small historic towns, you will find each one diverse and full of charm. Beautifully maintained parks will greet you at each lock. There are restaurants, bars, antique shops, bakeries, ice cream stores, shopping and spas. Each night you have the choice of staying in the towns or finding a quiet bay nearby. Houseboats combine the rewards of cottage living with the adventure of travel, allowing you to explore a different town or village each day, not having to worry about somewhere to stay. Soak up the sun, enjoy the scenery, spend time meeting new friends at each lock or tour until you find the perfect secluded bay for private relaxation.
The bliss of house boating is that you choose your destination each day, cruise westward to Lake Simcoe or east to Peterborough and see their famous Lift Lock. Drop anchor and stay in a favourite fishing spot. Choices like these are what separates using a houseboat from any other type of vacation – the freedom to choose your pace, to go where you want, when you want, and just relax, knowing you have all the comforts of a cottage along with you. You will appreciate their easy handling, maneuverability and stress-free operation. Egan Houseboat Rentals is a small family run business that operates from their marina in the heart of the Kawarthas – the most popular region on the Trent Severn Waterway. An Egan houseboat can accommodate one to three couples or one to two small families depending on the size of boat chosen (40' or 32'). Book with a group of friends, or for a memorable family retreat.

Dragon Flies & Fishing Poles Fishing is something I grew up with. My father spent many hours teaching my brothers and I how to cast, bait a hook, take a fish off the line, where to cast to catch the “big” bass and a slew of other tips and tricks. As a child, I spent many summer days in boats, on shorelines, on docks, anywhere a line could be cast, but a passion for fishing did not seem to come naturally to me. Despite many efforts, I found the sport of fishing to be quite dull. Sitting in a boat with flies swarming, the sun baking the tops of my knees holding onto a rod in hopes that some slimy fish decided to eat my lure was never appealing. When I was nine years old, my father took us fishing on Six Mile Lake. At the time, I had an irrational fear of dragonflies and for some reason, our boat seemed to attract quite a few that day. When one landed on my shoulder, this fear resulted in me screaming, flapping my arms, standing up and upsetting the boat. I almost tipped all of us into the water. I’m pretty sure that was the day that my father decided not to take me fishing anymore. Recently, while near the river with my son, we passed some kids fishing with their grandfather. We stopped to see if they had caught anything. Their grandfather quickly offered my son an extra rod so he could join in. And so it began - four boys casting out in hopes of catching a fish. Within minutes, I was in the water unsnagging lures from stumps. I stood beside the kids praising well executed casts, giving tips on when to jerk the rod up at just the precise moment to hook a fish, and when a fish was caught, I quickly unhooked it and tossed it back into the water. I had to chuckle and appreciate the effort my dad spent teaching me what I needed to know about fishing. I may not be a willing candidate for an early morning fishing trip, but my father’s persistence paid off and he has a daughter who can teach her kids to fish as well as protect him from dragonflies. 3 Steps to Success for Bert’s Appliances
Celebrating 50 Years in Business No stranger to hard work, Bert Macey had been a Seaman on the Great Lakes, a Seaman on the Merchant Marines, he drove a streetcar in Toronto, and later worked as a serviceman for General Electric. In 1969 Bert and his wife Rosemarie bought the Dandelion Snack Bar at Hickory Beach near Fenelon Falls. There, they operated the snack bar and Bert continued to do service repairs. Soon appliances were stocked at the snack bar and Bert was doing more and more business in Appliance Sales & Service. Eventually, Bert and Rosemarie sold the snack bar and started a showroom in the basement of their Fenelon Falls home. Nine years later they would move the business to town, where they purchased and renovated a Ford Car Dealership. When they weren’t working, Bert and Rosemarie enjoyed boating on the Trent Severn, Georgian Bay and the Niagara River. “Bert was the guy who could always make you laugh and he could fix

just about anything.” Rosemarie smiles remembering his outdoor “adventures and misadventures”, “whether snowmobiling or boating, funny things were always bound to happen with Bert.” When it came to business she smiles… “he always made sure that his customers knew that they were his absolute number one priority – he was grateful for their business and for him supporting his local community was everything.” Bert suffered from Alzheimer’s and both he and Rosemarie were supporters of the Alzheimer Society. This was back in the day when people were not discussing the illness to the degree that they are today. Bert was open about his condition and he talked freely about it, educating whoever he could. Bert died at 82 years of age in

The customer first focus remains along with home delivery and taking away old appliances...at Bert’s is all about paying attention to the details and it’s as important today as it was to Bert in 1969. Bert's Appliances offers a wide variety of appliances and mattresses. With hundreds of products to choose from, whether you are looking for kitchen appliances, laundry, garbage disposal, ventilation, mattresses or bases. Fenelon Falls, he and Rosemarie were together over 50 years.
Those Were The Days “All the Yesterdays Are Gone " Way back in 535 BC a Greek philosopher named Heraclitus made a profound statement, “you can never walk the same path twice”. I believe every one of us who have re-visited old homesteads, neighbourhoods or stomping grounds will attest his words to be not only sage insight but living truth. The Ambassador Bridge linking Windsor to Detroit, Michigan turned five years old the year I was born; the magnificent bridge was truly an engineering marvel but sadly, due to extreme deterioration from constant heavy truck and car traffic, a new bridge is needed and is presently under construction. During summer months hundreds of men, women and children flocked to the Ford City bathing beach, a two story wooden structure with a wading pool on one side and a four foot deep swimming pool on the other. A short distance down river was Beaumonts, the best fishing spot for miles around. The beach is now a high rise apartment building and a parking lot has nullified the once well-known fishing paradise. The Sandwich Coal Company truck came to our house in the fall to dump a load of the black gold into our basement preparing for winter. If we ran short Dad took our wagon and for .25 cents filled a few sacks to get us through the remaining cold nights. The coal company is now a fast food outlet. A small neighbourhood grocery store where everything was wrapped in brown paper and tied with string is long gone, so too the dairy outlet. I remember a shoe maker shop and five and dime store, even a billiards parlour originally built to accommodate the returning veterans but one by one they disappeared into the dust of the fast paced future. One thing I certainly do not miss is the terrifying howl of the towering air raid siren that was tested every Saturday afternoon. As time marched on I bought my first car for $150.00, a 1929 Ford. I could fill the tank for a dollar and if needed add a 25 cent quart of oil. If we wanted to haul a boat or trailer we just clamped a ten dollar hitch to the back metal bumper and away we go, with plastic bumpers today the same procedure costs mega bucks. We once followed a path through a dense bush to the nearest park or to the Royal Theater’s Saturday afternoon matinee. The theatre is a flea market and the bush has been replaced by a community of new streets and houses. My old high school is an office building, the bank where we purchased war stamps is a variety store, Wonder Bakeries where I got my first job is history and Father Time has even erased the church where my wife and I were married. Of course I fully understand it is the natural and accepted evolution of progress but it does prove Heraclitus’ adage, you can never walk the same path twice. Russ Sanders epigram@nexicom.net

Exploring
Our Own Backyard
One month ago, on June 21, we observed the Summer Solstice, and, more importantly, National Indigenous Peoples Day – a day when Indigenous Peoples' culture and heritage are celebrated through traditional song, dance, and spiritual reflection. What better way to celebrate the Earth's revolutions and its deep heritage than to reconnect with the beauty that surrounds us through the observation of such an important time of the year. It is also an opportunity to be thankful and appreciative of those who continue to steward the land. Here at Burleigh Falls Inn, we feel truly honoured and are continuously grateful to have the opportunity to be operating our business on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg people. Situated on the 11 acre Burleigh Island, where cascading waters create the “falls” between Lovesick and Ston(e)y Lake, our inn sits at the gateway to the Kawarthas in an area known as the “Land Between” - an ecotone, or, a place where two communities meet and integrate. The Land Between lies between the Shield and Lowlands stretching across south-central Ontario from Georgian Bay to the Frontenac Arch.
Since 1994
The Land Between boasts an array of small lakes, rivers, and wetlands, where you can glimpse the edge of the North’s Canadian Shield; it is comprised of small towns, farmlands, and deeply wooded areas. Rich in culture and heritage, it's the heartbeat of Ontario’s true bests – expansive and abundant provincial parks, signature sites, land conservations, with a National Historic Site in the Trent Severn Waterway which winds its way through its centre. This beautiful region is a natural wonder, it's an outdoor enthusiasts' paradise, a place of ancient stories and of new adventures. It is the home of the canoe, of kids camps, and of visible night skies, and it's where we're blessed with a vibrant culture in which First Nations, innovative settlers, entrepreneurs, and artists have integrated to form a warm and welcoming community. Our summer advice – get out and explore our backyard... it’s beautiful and full of surprises around every bend. Burleigh Falls Inn http://www.burgleighfallsinn.com

Fun on the Water Teaching Kids to Ski – and Love It Now that I have a daughter, people ask how long we will wait to teach her to ski. The reality; there is no age limit for learning to ski, and there are great tools to teach kids as young as one year old. We waited to see if she showed interest. She started on the tube, has spent time with us on the wakesurf board, and lots of time in and around the water. Her interest was sparked, so we got her a ski. Skis for little kids are as good as they have ever been, many companies have great trainers and there are some amazing hybrid ski/tube devices like the Easy Ski - perfect for building confidence. We chose the O’brien Platform Trainer. It has remarkable stability, a great binding setup, is really easy to modify, plus it’s made from bamboo so it’s super tough. My daughter really likes it because it’s green. Trainers can be complicated right out of the box, mainly the ropes. Trainer skis are often tied together, a rope tied to the front for kids to hold with another rope tied to the tips for adults to hold. An important note: most trainer skis are built to be held by parents in the boat - not attached to the boat itself. Always read the manual during setup and use. After choosing a ski help them get comfortable. That includes lots of on-land skiing, building excitement, and dragging them around the lawn working on stance with plenty of high fives. Onland training should still include a life jacket even if nowhere near the water, this gets them used to the feeling of being on the ski with it on. Next step - find a beach, similar to dragging through the grass - going through shallow water under man power builds confidence and gets them used to the feeling of sliding on the
Since 1994
water. Next, behind the boat - we will be using our ski boat. The thing about the platform trainer is there’s no need to go faster than about 5 mph, so with Mom in the water on a SUP, me on the boat holding the rope, and some extra helpers driving and being crew, we have successful skis every time. Keep the experience short and sweet; never push or force them to do something they are scared to do. Regardless of outcome, high fives and ice creams should take place after! Keep them excited and they will keep coming back to the water year after year. By Jay Poole, Buckeye Marine, http://www.buckeyemarine.com

Tourism has been a part of life in the Kawarthas since the 1800s. Perhaps the area’s first tourists were Royal Navy Captain Basil Hall and his wife Margaret, who visited both Cobourg and Peterborough in 1827. The lakes and woods around Peterborough quickly gained a reputation for great fishing and hunting, drawing hunters and fishermen from around Ontario, other parts of Canada, and even from the United States to the many lodges and camps established in the area.
train to Peterborough, change trains to Lakefield, then be taken by a steamboat to a cottage; he could reverse the trip on Sunday night and be behind his desk or retail counter by opening time on Monday, rested and refreshed by clean lake air and relaxed cottage time with the family.
Gradually, area tourism became family-oriented, especially when the construction of railways and the Trent Canal (now the TrentSevern Waterway) made the Kawartha Lakes more accessible for non-sporting members of the public. In the early 20th century, daily trains delivered cargo and passengers to Peterborough from all points, and steamboats plied Rice Lake, the Trent and Otonabee rivers, and other lakes, to bring guests and supplies to area hotels, lodges, and cottages. Extended summer cottaging became popular for upper- and middle-class urban families. Several weeks, a month, or even the entire summer was spent at a rented or owned cottage. What made long summer stays possible was the reliable rail and water transportation links between Peterborough, and such places as Toronto, Montreal, Belleville, Kingston, and Niagara, which allowed whole families to travel, with luggage and sometimes even furniture, from cities and towns to cottage regions. It became common for families to stay at a cottage or lodge, while men commuted from home to the cottage. For example, a man could work in Toronto all week, then on Friday evening catch a

Times have changed – automobiles replaced passenger trains and now gasoline or diesel engines drive boats instead of steam – but visiting the Kawarthas in the summer is still very popular, as are many activities of the past. A Month in Portugal at the Monte Santo Resort, Carvoeiro Musings from the Algarve by Ron Jeffery On March 1, 2018 twenty-four travellers flew to Lisbon, Portugal to our home for the next 28 nights in the village of Carvoeiro, Algarve at the Monte Santo Resort for a Merit Travel Longstay.
The staff at the resort were exceptional. They would accommodate virtually any request, including opening the restaurant early for those leaving on morning tours, or providing a box breakfast.
To sum up our home for the month – gorgeous! A five-star property through and through, it has one and two-bedroom units featuring two bathrooms, a washer and dryer, and a fully equipped kitchen.
In addition to the included tours to the nearby Loule Market, a trip to Lisbon for a walking and tapas tour, and a visit to the UNESCO site of Sintra, almost the entire group travelled together on optional tours to the west and east Algarve. Many of the group also booked additional tours. From Jeep off-roading tours to local food tours, to longer trips to Spain or Morocco, there was an adventure for everyone.
With proximity to three golf courses, the resort was ideal for the golf fans in our group, and the beach was a 20-minute walk through town, with access to a free shuttle when we didn’t want the stroll. Three couples in the group also rented cars so we were able to do grocery runs. The group quickly became its own little community, with everyone eager to experience everything on offer in the Algarve and at our accommodations. Happy Hour, for example was at 5p.m. each day and was attended by most of the group from beginning to end. Breakfast was included daily so we saw each other in the morning to make plans. The resort also featured a large and fully equipped wellness centre which was used extensively, and so became a meeting place unto itself.

It’s Just a Tree Fort When I was a young lad, my friends and I had a competition to see who could build the best fort. My father was a builder and luckily I had access to his leftover materials. My father was a busy man, so I learned on my own through trial and error. Not nearly as much fun to build by yourself. As the competition went on, I did build the best one - until my friend Mike built a better one. Not to be outdone, I added a second floor. Building is in my genes, seeing that I have been building homes for about 35 years now, and yes - some of the best! I find myself wishing that my father was here to share it with me, create memories, but I’m sure that he is watching me now as I follow in his footsteps. As a parent, I strive to give my kids as much of my time as I can. It’s important to share your passions with your kids and I have been lucky enough to create memories with my son, by building a tree fort.
Since 1994
As I did when I was a kid we used left over materials from my projects on the farm, and it continued to grow, along with the learning. Now we just have to look at it and it brings smiles to our faces every time, to us it is more than just a fort. As he gets older my son’s interests have changed, he’s not really as fascinated with hanging out in the tree fort anymore, but I am so glad that we took that window of time and created lasting memories together – with hammer and nail; and a bunch of laughter and lessons learned. I encourage you to make those memories whenever possible, and with whomever you are around. After all, it’s just a tree fort, right? By Dave Linkert, Site Supervisor, Port 32 Marshall Homes

Hutchison House Museum
Celebrates 40th Anniversary This year marks the 40th anniversary of Hutchison House Museum, located in one of the oldest limestone houses in Peterborough, at 270 Brock Street. The House is owned and operated as a living history museum by the Peterborough Historical Society. The original residents, Dr. John Hutchison, his wife Martha and their children moved into the house in 1837. Sir Sandford Fleming, who was Dr. Hutchison’s second cousin, arrived in Peterborough in 1845 when he was 18 years old and called the doctor’s house home for the next 2 years. The Sir Sandford Fleming room includes one of his original maps of Peterborough, along with his sextant and other surveying tools. The first two floors are restored to the time period when the Hutchison family lived there, including a doctor’s study with medical instruments, while the top floor is reminiscent of the Victorian era, during the time the Harvey & Connal families lived there.

TOMATO ONION SALAD with BLUE CHEESE If you’re barbecuing steak tonight, this is the salad to make! Fresh ripe tomatoes, grilled onions, topped with an incredible blue cheese dressing. Ingredients 6 medium heirloom tomatoes, sliced 1 Vidalia onion, sliced 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar 1 head of Boston lettuce For the dressing: 1/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar ¼ cup of blue cheese, crumbled kosher salt and black pepper
Instructions 1) Remove cores from tomatoes, turn onto sides and slice, ¼" thick. Reserve. 2) Turn onion on its side and slice into four even rings, about ¼" thick. Lay the slices flat on your work surface and carefully drive a metal brochette through the onion rings to secure them. Drive a second brochette through the onions in the same fashion. 3) Preheat barbecue to medium-high, about 450°F. Whisk 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil with the balsamic vinegar and brush onto the prepared onions. Transfer to hot barbecue and grill until they soften and caramelize. Brush with additional oil and vinegar mixture as required. Remove from grill and carefully remove brochettes. Separate into rings by hand. 4) Assemble the salad: Place a few leaves of Boston lettuce down onto the presentation plate or platter. Add a layer of sliced tomatoes in an attractive fashion. Sprinkle tomatoes with grilled onions and a pinch of kosher salt. Add another layer of tomatoes, onion and salt. Continue until all tomatoes and onion are used. 5) Prepare dressing: Place ingredients for dressing into a small bowl and gently whisk together, leaving small chunks of blue cheese still visible. 6) Spoon dressing over salad. Sprinkle with black pepper and serve.
ELOTE– MEXICAN STREET CORN This easy to make corn on the cob recipe will become a summer favourite. Grilled corn slathered in a tangy, garlicky mayo then rolled in cheese, cilantro and ancho powder – What’s not to love about Elote! Ingredients 4 ears of corn, shucked For the sauce: ¼ of a cup of mayonnaise ¼ of a cup of sour cream 1 clove of garlic, mashed juice of ½ a lime To complete the dish: 1 cup of Cotija cheese or feta cheese, crumbled
Instructions 1) Place all of the ingredients for the sauce into a small bowl and whisk together. Set aside along with a marinade or pastry brush. 2) Crumble cheese onto a shallow, medium-sized oval platter or dish. 3) Preheat barbecue to medium-high heat, about 450°F. Place ears of corn onto grill and cook until kernels begin to brown. Turn ears as they cook to ensure even grilling. Transfer cooked corn to a platter and return to kitchen.
1 tablespoon of ancho powder ¼ of a cup of fresh cilantro, rough chopped lime wedges for garnish
4) Liberally brush sauce on to ears then place into cheese and roll to coat. Sprinkle with ancho powder and chopped cilantro. Serve immediately with additional lime wedges as garnish.

One Call to HELP with that “What if ” There has been no shortage of media coverage concerning the plight of Canadian travelers stranded in other parts of the world with either illness or injury. Unless you’ve gone through the experience, you can’t possibly imagine how overwhelming these situations can be. The challenges run anywhere from enduring the complications of language barriers to financial constraints but most of all, needing someone to talk to who has the knowledge and experience to help with travel needs and decision making. “Going it alone” in a complex medical situation really isn’t a good idea because it often creates more complications and delays says Gail Courneyea Registered Nurse and Aeromedical Consultant. Although many travelers tend not to be prepared for a medical crisis away from home, you should find comfort in knowing that professional help is only one phone call away from anywhere in
Since 1994
the world, regardless of time zones. With resources to translate in over 200 languages, it is absolutely essential to understand what is going on medically. Moving forward with planning when and how you can be transported home will remove some worry out of the equation. Medical transportation such as Air Ambulances can be cost prohibitive for many and it is essential to select appropriate and qualified service providers. In the event finances are at issue, you should know assistance in the form of a loan may be available. A charity whose mission is to provide monies towards medical transportation for those in need might also be approached. The objective is to save critical time, international medical costs, and get the patient home safely. Global 911 International works with
a network of health care, aviation professionals and airlines worldwide. These relationships are imperative when combining travel needs, with a receiving hospital and time is critical. The best way you can help yourself is to consider a “what if” event and prepare a backup plan before your health is unexpectedly compromised. By joining the annual HALO MEDCARD PROGRAM your vital information, safely stored in an EMR system, will expedite your care and repatriation if necessary. With no additional cost or time constraints, you can consult with an Aeromedical Consultant who will be your advocate. Lots to consider! Remember – your most important call will be your first! Protection & Avoidance of Black Flies and Ticks Black flies are known to be prevalent from mid-May to approximately the end of June. (cold and wet can keep them here longer) Ticks, can be found in many wooded areas and are most active from approximately April to November. Here are some suggestions to help you protect yourself and avoid unwanted bites this year! • Educate yourself about ticks, their bites and black flies. • Leave perfumed products in the city. • Bring light colour clothes with long sleeves and high necks. They say dark colours for ticks but the ticks are hard to see. • Natural fabrics like cottons are best because they breathe. Shirts should be long enough to tuck into pants and pants long enough to tucked into your socks with boots, hiking shoes with closed toes. • Hats that fit over your ears or bug hats or jackets. • Stay in open areas and stay on the trails. Shrubs, tall grassy meadows and leaf litter increase your chances of being bitten. • The bugs are most active in moist, overcast days, early morning and late afternoon. • Ask at the visitor’s area of recreational parks if there are known risk areas for ticks. • Bug repellents work for both. Many prefer to coat clothing rather than applying directly to the skin. Bug repellents should not be used on children under 6 months. • Mosquito netting will help protect children in playpens or cribs along with proper clothing. • After hiking check yourself thoroughly at the entrance to your cottage. Clothes should go directly in washing machine. A dryer will make sure they are gone. Don’t forget backpacks. • A shower will wash away loose ticks. Please educate yourself how to safely remove if one is imbedded.

• Bug sticks don’t smell nice and they do sting, but they will ease itching & swelling. • A lint remover is invaluable for removing any loose ticks on both you and your pets. • Don’t forget to check your pets after being outdoors. • An Epi Pen and a pair of tweezers should be in your First Aid Kit. • Excessive swelling and/or discomfort should be medically treated. Peterborough Kia
Under New Ownership This year got off to an exciting start for Paul Seminara when he achieved one of his lifetime goals; he worked in the car business for over 20 years before finally realizing his dream of owning his own dealership. In January of 2018, Paul took over the Kia premises in Peterborough. Paul began his automotive career as a salesperson with Chrysler before being promoted to leasing manager, then to new and preowned sales manager, and eventually becoming general manager. Impressed by the newly redesigned Kia Forte, Paul made the decision to move from Chrysler to Kia about 8 years ago. Paul has been happily married to his wife Cheryl for 23 years and they have 3 children – Frank, Nick, and Samantha. Paul is grateful for his family's support without which his dream may not have been possible. In addition to his passion for cars Paul also enjoys golfing, boating and live music. Previous owners Brian and Lynn Hill left Paul with “a great client base and fantastic employees” - one of the major deciding factors for him in undertaking such a big step of purchasing the dealership. Day to day operations at Peterborough Kia will remain the same,

although Paul says he will be looking to expand the lot size of the dealership and undertake some re-imaging of the exterior and interior. Peterborough Kia, 238 Lansdowne St., Peterborough www.peterboroughkia.ca

Road Art
Ensuring Your Financial Affairs Are Ready For A Worst Case Scenario Summer is finally here and while many Canadians will make the annual sojourn up to cottage country for the season, a large number will also take to the road, air and water for trips further afar. While the focus before travel is usually on getting new clothes, arranging for pets and making sure the neighbours bring in the mail; there are even more important considerations that most tend to omit. This includes ensuring our affairs are in order should something happen to us when we are away. The first item is the status of our will. If it was reviewed or changed within the last few years then chances are everything is in order, though it is still good practice to review it with a lawyer before a major journey. This is especially true if you are travelling with your children and/ or grandchildren since a worst case scenario could present major problems in terms of where the estate flows to. I have known several high net worth individuals who insisted on travelling separate from their children for this
60
very reason. If your will has not been reviewed for several years, then it is simply good practice to do so well before your travel date. Many individuals have wills that have not been looked at or changed for over ten years. We also need to review of all other financial assets where individual or charitable beneficiaries are named. Examples of this would include life insurance policies. Some will name their estates as the beneficiary of a policy where their estate is complicated, but the majority of people will typically name spouses, children and grandchildren. What many don’t realize is that they can name contingent beneficiaries on these policies in the event that the primary beneficiary is deceased. This is important in the case where spouses have each named as primary beneficiary and travel extensively. Similarly, we can also name contingent beneficiaries on registered accounts like RRSPs,
July / August 2018 ~ Cottage Country Connection
RRIFs and TFSAs. This is not to minimize income tax at estate time (registered accounts other TFSAs are deemed to have been disposed of at the time of death and their values are treated as income), but if the assets of these accounts can flow through to a beneficiary instead of the estate, it is possible to minimize probate. No one likes to think about the end of life, especially when the summer is supposed to be filled with the joy of spending time with loved ones, but spending a little time going over your estate and plans can help alleviate financial pressures in the event we are not here. As always, it is important to review these issues with your legal representative and professional tax advisor beforehand. You’ve been moving around and renting for the past five years or more, but now want to buy a home. Unfortunately, the only savings you have are in RRSPs. Don’t cash them in! The Home Buyer’s Plan (HBP) allows you to “borrow” up to $25,000 of your own savings. Fill out Area 1 of Form T1036 and take it to your financial advisor. OR you have decided to return to school full-time. The Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) allows you to “borrow” from your RRSPs up to $10,000 a year to a maximum of $20,000. Fill out Area 1 of Form RC96 and take it to your financial advisor. These withdrawals will not be taxable and will not have tax withheld, but they must be repaid by making an RRSP contribution and flagging it as an HBP or LLP repayment on Schedule 7 of your tax return. 1. For the HBP, payments start the 2nd year after you withdrew under the plan. You have 15 years to pay it all back. 2. For the LLP, payments starts the year after you cease being a full-time student (to a maximum of four years). You have 10 years to pay it back. Any year you miss all or part of the repayment, the balance of the amount that you were supposed to pay is added to your taxable income as if you withdrew from your RRSP. In some cases, for example a year of very low income, this is an effective tax saving strategy. There are some restrictions that are beyond the scope of this article related to, for example, RRSP contributions in the 3 months before you withdraw under either plan, the definition of a “first-time homebuyer”, and the type of residence or postsecondary education that qualifies. Be sure to read up on these or consult an expert. Cottage Country Connection Magazine is pleased to welcome Belinda Wilson as Sales & Marketing Account Executive. Hailing from Fenelon Falls, Belinda attended school there, continuing her education at Trent University – focusing on English Literature, History, and Education. She says her first ‘real’ job was working at the North Kawartha Times community Newspaper where she got her first taste of photography “I was afraid to hold a camera until one day the publisher gave me the camera bag and 6 rolls of film and told me not to come back until I had shot all 6 rolls – that was the beginning of an amazing journey!” With many different jobs and skills under her belt Belinda now owns Celtic Roots Photography, is co-owner of Victoria County Signs, and has been working in sales and marketing since 1996; all while continuing to pursue a part-time music career as a singer/songwriter/musician. Fun Fact: Belinda received her first royalty cheque in 1994 for “That Ol’ Moon”. She plays piano, keyboards, saxophone, autoharp, harmonica, percussion, but prefers to perform with her guitar. Find her performing every Tuesday evening this summer at Murphy’s Lockside Pub & Patio in Fenelon Falls. Belinda gives back to her community regularly, an avid member of the Royal Canadian Legion, she was Branch 238 President from 2007-2016, along with other chairmanship roles. Belinda received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal and Life Membership in 2013, and won several District and Provincial awards for “The Bugle”, a branch magazine published bi-monthly. Currently Belinda offers her time to the Fenelon Falls Santa Day Committee, the Kawartha Arts Festival Board and the Fenelon Agricultural Society as the Photography Exhibits chair at the Fenelon Fair. Belinda says that one of her defining moments was being selected to represent Ontario as part of the 2013 Royal Canadian Legion Pilgrimage of Remembrance.; a two-week trip to Northern France and Belgium, visiting Canadian battle sites, memorials and cemeteries. Belinda has also been honored to travel across the province as guest speaker at Legion branches, conventions, youth groups, church groups, cadet corps and service clubs; from Sarnia to Lyndhurst, and over 50 points in between, sharing her experiences through pictures, words and original songs. With her great knowledge of cottage country and her creative spirit, we couldn’t be more pleased to have Belinda on board. She brings with her an amazing list of experience, a contagious smile and a great sense of humor. Connect with Belinda at cottagecountrybelinda@gmail.com 705-341-5723 or 705-652-8777.
