A Message From the
Boss Dawg… “Wow!” That’s how I acknowledged the awesome design work in this month’s issue done by our talented new Art Director, Kiele Stevens. Kiele’s brought many fresh new ideas with her, and thanks to her and Editor Bryan Dearsley, you can expect to see some subtle improvements over the upcoming months (and some not so subtle… check out our incredible logo redesign!). As we continue to grow in size and success, we’ve been able to bring onboard some of the top creative talent in Canada, starting with our stable of freelancers and contributors, our cartoonists and photographers, and of course the behind the scenes folks. So first things first… a massive thank you to all! Then, of course, we owe a huge tip of the baseball cap (it is the season, after all), to you, our wonderful CottageDog readers! You’ve been sending us – via email and through our Facebook presence – some fantastic tales of your pooches, along with truly remarkable photos to go with them. In this issue of CottageDog alone, we’re thrilled to boast that no less than three of our wonderful features came from you, our readers! First up is Joanne George’s inspiring story of her young son, Shepherd, who has been heralded by Millan Cesar as “Canada’s youngest do whisperer”. Then there’s Arlene Cole’s sweet tale of her island-hopping Dachshunds, and our firstever dog-treat recipe, submitted by reader Jennifer Sawchuk. Well done all, and keep those wonderful stories coming in! Other treats in store include a low-down on the best SUVs for travelling back and forth to cottage country by long-time cottager and rov(er) ing reporter Vince Grittani. Plus, be sure to check out my report on petfriendly Nova Scotia… sure, I’m biased, but it’s one of the most incredibly dog-and-people-friendly places on the planet! On a more serious note, dog behavior expert Kerry Vinson provides tips and tactics to wildlife-proof your pets, and for cat lovers (come on, we know some of you love these cute critters!), we’ve got Part 2 of Chibley’s Travels, our seafaring feline aboard the tall ship Picton Castle. A personal favourite this issue – and one you can participate in – is our fun Chipmunk Challenge. Created by CottageDog in conjunction with young agility trainer Sara Carson, it’s a chance to try your hand at training a chipmunk to do a miniature obstacle course, record your entry and even win a prize! We’ve also been busy putting together fantastic partnerships with groups like DockDogs, organizers of the exciting dock jumping sport. We’ll continue to follow DockDog contests over the coming months, including event details and results, top jump photography, and “how-to” tips. Thank You For Changing My Life By Dr. Jason McLeod
M
y life has changed. I am no longer the owner of an old dog. My goofy, stout-faced compadre Thor is no longer with me. I often still get that squeeze around my heart and the sudden watery tear in my eye when I think of him. A silent haze will overtake me and I will go quietly back to a not so distant memory. I miss his gentle nature, his unbending loyalty, his constant companionship. He was my shadow everywhere I went, and most people who know me still expect to see him somewhere in my proximity when we cross paths. Clients ask where he is and get that sudden look of despair in their faces when told of the news. Without fail, their sadness is quickly followed with a recollection of the last time they saw him and how he made them laugh.
“Thor was such a huge part of my life. He was like my North Star – that guiding light that everyone needs, or finds, in something.” I awake everyday to a picture of him on my nightstand and, although less frequently as time passes, still sometimes fall into the natural routine we had in the morning. One in which his needs, and that of our family’s true masters – the cats – dictated how the day would - 8 - CottageDog - June 2011
begin. I was used to him knowing me, and me knowing him. It was effortless and without thought. I felt empty for many days after his last. I remind myself everyday that he lived a long and wonderful life with us. Although we only had him for slightly less than eight of his 15 plus years, we are filled with memories that generate laughter and joy from deep within. I look at pictures from not so long ago and see my mighty boy in all his glory, his fuzzy tennis ball inevitably perched between his jaws, his tongue hanging out, coated with saliva like a soft pink water slide. He was always ready to play and, without encouragement, eager to please. His love of car rides to… wherever, it did not matter. Love of every person, especially those willing to take some time to toss a disgustingly slimy ball, preferably for hours on end. And love of treats! Oh boy, those treats… healthy, or not; vet-approved, or not; edible… sometimes not. I recall a time when I was so pre-occupied with getting an order correct at the local coffee shop drive through, I didn’t notice as I drove away that I had closed the rear passenger window on his head while he was still outstretched, anxiously awaiting another tiny donut morsel from the young lady that served us. He held no grudge, as he never did, probably because he received most of my donut as a peace offering in the moments afterward.
Photos evoke strong memories
I am still trying to put together a collective montage of pictures that represent his true character. Looking through these photos, that have sat silent in picture boxes, for the first time in so long is more joyous, yet more difficult than I would have imagined. I have not had more than a welling of tears for weeks now, but today they are gushing like a glacier-fed stream. I see him from our early years together, so happy to have two people doting on him as if he were British royalty. The photos recall his muscular, handsome physique reminiscent of a Greek god. He was the Boy Scout explorer when on hikes through the Algonquin wilderness; the trailblazer when out snowshoeing across the frozen Muskoka lakes; the stoic leader at the bow of the canoe when gently gliding through the marshlands on a dew-filled morning. Even from the backseat of the car, he was our unspoken GPS as still evidenced by the crusted remnants from his jowls on the back of my headrest.

Life is busy, and as time goes on it only seems to get busier.” As time passed, he became the focus of our family at home and at work. To call him a workplace mascot would not do him justice. Every client knew him and if he happened to be in a deep snooze in the staff room neglecting his duties to give a jovial welcome, we all heard about it. He got into a habit of giving relatively forceful “nose-butts” to our team members when talking with clients. A sudden smack in the derrière would inevitably get everyone laughing and lead to a treat. Although never known as the smartest of dogs, this kind of reward system quickly became engrained. It was not long before clients would be surprised with a little “goose” in the backside when standing a little too close to the treat jar. When our son was born, Thor seemed to inherently change his role with class and dignity. He recognized and accepted that playtime was reduced and thus it became precious. To our surprise, he was a willing big brother with a gentle heart within his gigantic frame. The numerous times he sent our son flying with an inadvertent body check were immediately followed with a sudden flash of calm and of unspoken remorse. We so wish that our son could have grown up with him a little longer. Our son will never know of how much he had in a dog.
The beginning of the end
Over the past year I knew his time in this world was approaching an end. I tried to make the most of
every day with him. Life is busy, and as time goes on it only seems to get busier. Thor aged suddenly and it was a wake up call for me to slow down. I consciously spent more time with him, even if it was just sitting by the water’s edge watching his alarmingly fragile body trying to navigate the unsteady rocks and pebbles beneath his feet. His previously athletic body had been reduced to one of skinny legs and an arched back like that of an old man. He was still so happy to be alive. Thor was such a huge part of my life. He was like my North Star – that guiding light that everyone needs, or finds, in something. He made me laugh everyday, and with it I would feel my body’s stresses subside. On days when I did not feel the world was with me, he would suddenly be there with a gentle nudge. When I was sick or exhausted, he seemed to empathize and would curl up on the couch or bed beside me and be content that play would have to wait another day. At times when I questioned why I chose to be a veterinarian, I would simply need to look at him and remember it is my calling. So when the time came, as it inevitably does for us all, I needed to conjure the strength from within that I so respect in the clients we service. It was a perfect evening with a warm fire and Thor lying on his bed only a few feet away. He had the opportunity for those to say goodbye that were truly impacted by him everyday. He passed away while in a deep snooze with the arms of his mom wrapped tightly around his body. He opened his eyes one last time and looked at me just before his last breath. I know he said “thank you”, as I did to him.

Dog Whisperer… Cottage a place where youngsters bond with family and pets

y summers, along with many a cold winter weekend, were spent at my parent’s cottage, Trout Fish Inn – my dad was a keen fisherman! – on Kennisis Lake in Haliburton where I explored the forest and shoreline with my best friend Winnie. My mom felt some security knowing that while I was missing for most of the day, our female Labrador mix breed would never leave my side. Now, the next generation of ‘child and dog’ bonding has begun at the cottage! My son Shepherd is fortunate to spend his summers up here, and is even more blessed to share his dog days of summer with three canine pals. Pearl and Pippi are Border Collies, and Smiley is a Golden Retriever born without eyes. Consequently, Smiley ‘sees’ the world differently, through smells, sounds and energy.
“The dogs came to recognize him as a pack leader…” When Shepherd was born I knew I had plenty of work to do to make sure the family dynamics of pets and tiny people worked. The Border Collies are from true working lines and have competed very successfully in sheepherding. They were wary around children and nipped at me if I walked too fast down the hall. Smiley came to me when he was one or two years of age from a puppy mill and was never properly socialized; with his disability, what would he think of a small baby who cried all the time and who grabbed his fur? I had to keep this baby safe and wanted to live happily with our three dogs. And so the training started. A lot of dog training with a brand new baby in my arms. Two hour walks with all three dogs and Shepherd in a carriage. Shepherd took a great liking to the dogs from very early on. When only six months or so, it was evident he wouldn’t eat unless Smiley was right there beside him, and he could tell the difference between Pippi and Pearl (my mother still can’t tell them apart!). The dogs came to recognize him as a pack leader, too. To keep him safe, I created a ‘bubble’ around him, and they learned not to enter his personal space. If he had food, they looked the other way, and if Smiley smelled food around Shepherd, he put his head down. - 10 - CottageDog - June 2011
Leader of the pack Shepherd’s name quite literally means ‘to care for’, ‘lead’ and ‘guide’. And that he does, big time. So much so, in fact, that people have called him the “Baby Dog Whisperer”. When he was a baby, Smiley sensed his helplessness and would always try to comfort him when he cried. He was always careful to detect whether Shepherd was on the floor when he entered a room so to not trudge over him. Now Shepherd helps Smiley, guiding him to the stairs on the deck to lead him to the grass below, bringing a treat right to his nose and consoling him when he bumps his head. When he was just 1½, Shepherd appeared with Cesar Millan as “Canada’s Youngest Pack Leader” live on stage at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto with Smiley and myself. It was a dream come true! He’ll be two in June, and he now ushers the dogs into their room at night and corrects them with a “tssst” and a finger, instructing them to go back in if they step over the line... and they listen. As a dog trainer, I would always tell people “you can never trust a dog 100% around kids.” I never thought I would ever say this, but I do trust all three of my dogs with my son, 100%. So, do I have exceptional dogs? Or do I have an exceptional child? Joanne George is a veterinary technician, certified dog trainer and a full-time mother. Ontario Dockdogs shows how it’s done
o many of you have read the articles in CottageDog, seen the sport on TV, or been to events like the All About Pets Show where it’s performed. Many of you no doubt wondered how you, too, can get your dog involved. Believe it or not, it’s easy to get started. All that’s needed is an inflatable toy, a dog that’s over six months old, and a desire to have the time of your life with your pup travelling this great country of ours! There are many events throughout the spring, summer and fall all over Canada. These can be found at the DockDogs national website (www.dockdogs.com) or by visiting the club closest to you. Ontario Dockdogs (www.ontariodockdogs.com) covers most of the southern and southwestern section of the province, while 1000 Islands (www.1000islandsdockdogs.com) covers events anywhere from Kingston to Ottawa. We can also be found at festivals, shows and pet-related events.
When attending an event, there are a few things you should keep in mind. The first is that we’re all there to have FUN! Of course, there are a few things you can do to help improve your dog’s performance once you hit the dock, but let’s start with the basics. One of the most common questions is, “What should I expect from an event?” That’s easy: great fun, new friends, and an addiction to a sport that you’d have never thought possible – not to mention a greater admiration and appreciation for the relationship you have with your dog. When attending an event, there are a few things you should keep in mind. The first is that we’re all there to have FUN! New dogs may not jump right away, and there are several reasons why. First off, don’t be disappointed if this happens to you. What we’re asking our dogs to do may not come naturally. For a start, the dock and pool are both 40ft long. And the water at most events is crystal clear – just like we’d have in our swimming pools – and the reflection from the sun and liner can be very intimidating. Never mind the fact that the dock is 2ft above the water: for some of the smallest dogs, it could be the equivalent of jumping off the top of Niagara Falls. - 12 - CottageDog - June 2011

There are also the large crowds to contend with, and dogs – just like us – may have stage fright. If so, don’t be discouraged as it will all fall into place eventually. Events can also prove somewhat intimidating for us, too, especially that first time on the dock. You’re bound to feel nervous, but after awhile you realize the crowd isn’t there to watch you, but rather to watch your dog. All the nerves then fade away. Just have fun, and remind yourself it’s a privilege to have a dog so willing to work with you and do what you’re asking them to do.
Setting up camp When arriving at the event, set up your home base with a tent, etc., and head to the registration table to sign in. If you registered online, make sure you have a copy of your booking and confirmation number with you – if a mistake arises, it can be easily corrected. Approximately 30 minutes before your ‘wave’, a handlers meeting will be held. You must attend this. Leave your dog with someone during this time, as there could be up to 40 dogs within a wave. All that barking and carrying on could distract you and the other handlers from roll call and other important information that will be given to you at that time. During roll call, be sure to pay attention to which group you’re in as there are several groups of dogs and handlers within each wave (if you have any - 13 - CottageDog - June 2011
questions, now’s the time to ask). Once done, head back to home base and wait for your group to be called. You may need to listen closely as most events can be quite noisy with all the dogs barking with anticipation and background noise from the festival. Once the competition begins you’ll be placed into a lineup by the “Wrangler”. The Wrangler will be located at the bottom of the stairs during the wave to tell you when it’s safe to head up the dock to jump. During the competition, you’re only allowed 90 seconds once your dog sets foot on the dock. This is to get your dog lined up and then into the water. It may not seem like a very long time but it actually is sufficient. The most important thing is that you enjoy yourself doing it!
Anyone can do this sport – male, female, physically challenged, and young at heart. The throw is critical in this sport. However, if the toy goes out of the pool, no worries – organizers will be sure to get the toy for your dog to retrieve while in the pool. Once the dog has retrieved the toy you must call them back over to the dock for them to get out. The ramp attached to the pool is there for both dog and handler. But be careful – we’ve certainly seen our fair share of unexpected swimmers. Once you’ve taken control of your dog and he’s back on his leash, exit down the stairs and line up for your second jump. All competitors will get two jumps where the average distance will count towards their position within the group. If for some reason your dog doesn’t jump within the 90-second time limit, you’ll be asked to leave the dock and won’t be given a score for that jump. While at the event, talk with people already a part of the club. They’ll be more than willing to help you with techniques, providing ideas on how to improve or get your dog in the water for the first time. Speaking of which, here are two methods commonly used during competition to get your dog into the water: • Place and send method – lead your dog to the water, throw the toy in and take them back to the dock; rev them up in readiness to jump, then let them go and see how far they fly; or • Chase method – position your dog on the dock in a sit stay, and have them chase the toy that you have in your hand as you throw it into the air for them to chase. This is one of the more difficult but most effective ways to have your dog jump as most dogs see the water and want to go for it. After your dog has jumped and the wave has been completed (meaning all groups within that wave have jumped) you can go to the registration desk to see how your dog positioned within the group and receive your ribbon. - 14 - CottageDog - June 2011
What to bring To help you further, we’ve listed a few things to bring with you that are a must to make this an enjoyable experience for both you and your pup. • Flat buckled collar (choke collars, prong collars or electronic collars – including electronic collar receivers & transmitters – gentle leaders, halti-collars, or any other collar other than a flat buckled collar are not allowed on the dock during competition or practice) • Four ft. non flexi-line leash • Dog crate • Water bowls • Bottled water for dogs and humans • Fold up chair • Poop bags (please be sure to clean up after your dog so that we’re invited back to our hosting venue!) • Shade tent if you’re at an outside venue (both for rain and sun) • Floatable toys (bring a few different ones, you may want to switch things up) • Towels/Chamois (for you and your dog) • A sense of humour! Finally, remember that anyone can do this sport – male, female, physically challenged, and young at heart. Ontario DockDogs has handlers ranging in age from seven to 70, and each one enjoys the sport. Everyone’s there to have fun and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have – and there’s nothing more exciting than watching new dogs take that first plunge and seeing the joy the experience brings to their owners!

After losing my 11-year old Golden Retriever (Doral), with whom I did agility for four years, I thought I should look for a new sport. With some healing, we welcomed Torrey into our lives, and she’s now 14 months old and she is a DockDog! From the time Torrey was three months old she was swimming in my sister’s pool, racing to get out just so she could jump back in. While seeking out information regarding this sport, I was reunited with an old friend from my agility days, Heather MacLeod. I was delighted to find her again, and to find out she was spearheading this wonderful, fun sport called Dock Diving. We attended our first training session (with Ruff Sport, www.ruffsport.ca) in February, and after a few minutes on the platform Heather said, “I think you’ve got a diver on your hands.” While on our way to Florida for our spring vacation, we decided to stop in Lagrange, GA, for another crack at DockDogs 101 (a learning session for beginners). Well, what fun we had with the Dixie DockDogs! Once in Florida, we found an event being held in Cape Coral, and for fun and exercise signed up for our first competition. Although not really knowing what we were doing, I was sure Torrey would jump. That wouldn’t be an issue! After an extremely fun filled weekend with the Suncoast DockDogs, Torrey managed to jump in seven waves, making it to the Big Air Finals on Sunday in the Novice Division, placing 2nd overall. Quite simply, this is fun and exercise for us. Whatever Torrey does, she does. She’ll always jump, we can count on that, and after some training we’ll understand technique and see how we get on. This sport could be the most fun you’ll ever have with your dog. Think about it... what’s not to like about jumping off a dock? But truly, my pleasure comes from my little girl, quivering and shaking like there’s no tomorrow, as if to say, “Let me at it, Momma!” Her excitement is my reward.

Family weekends on Bella Lake My dad loved to spend his weekends at our family cottage “way back” on Bella Lake. This involved travelling back roads so rough that little girls who didn’t wear seatbelts would find themselves airborne at least a dozen times. It took sheer intestinal fortitude (or luck) not to upchuck. My father was always in a hurry and would of course floor the gas over the topside of every steep hill. I always brought my dog, and I recall him emptying his belly over my shoulder or lap more often than I care to remember. The abrupt bouncing stopped at the local dump, always welcomed as a means to steady equilibriums, where we’d count the multitudes of foraging black bears and raccoons before jumping back into the still vibrating car.

I think my father must have had ADHD because he rarely stayed put in any place very long. I had to run to keep up with his long legs, but thankfully that made me a very strong and fast runner when I grew into my full leg size. My mother didn’t like going to the cottage and that meant there was room for my twin cousins Eddie and John and older cousin Alan. And my dad, who always wanted a son, would delight in teaching them how to build outhouses or shoot a 2-10 over-and-under shotgun at potatoes on tin cans. And that meant I could chose to be involved or disappear to explore the reeds and fishing spots. Unfortunately, the boys did a poor job of cutting out the outhouse seat. They used a chainsaw, which meant I had to hold onto the wood for dear life and got my fair share of slivers hanging my wee bottom (it really was back then!) over the pit. However, I didn’t mind the target practices as I found I had pretty good hand eye co-ordination, something that served me well in my love of sports as I grew older. There was a bit of a setback in my sleep patterns for a short while, however, after cousin Alan fired the shotgun inside the cabin during the dead of night. Fortunately, he got the mouse inside the tin can and just the outside of the cabin and nothing else. There was another particularly disturbing time when I had to eat duck for breakfast, lunch and supper because my father forgot some boxes of groceries and it was duck hunting season. Fortunately again I was able to put that behind me when I discovered Muscovy duck makes for a much better tasting meal than the memory of the very gamey, cardboard like mallard.
More often than not my dog and I would disappear and enjoy our time back at the cottage together. I remember one time when we had gone back during the winter and spent a lot of time ice fishing, and I was looking forward to getting home and warm when my dog and I ran ahead of my father and cousins to where the car was parked on the other side of the lake. I had a big woolly hat on and couldn’t hear my dad yelling at me to stop running as he was afraid I would be cold waiting for them at the car. But I did hear the gun blast just as a gust of wind took off my woolly hat, and was convinced my excellent marksman of a father had shot at me. He tried for years to convince me it was my imagination, that it was the wind that took my hat off. I half expected him to tell me the truth on his dying bed, but that never came.

This Puparazzi Reporter found an abundance of accessible and beautiful beaches for her two dogs to enjoy while photographing a vast array of equally blessed beach pooches. Some were social gathering places for small groups of retirees and their dogs... perfect for their walking talkies! Others were clearly for solitude sojourning with your dog(s), a chance to inhale the salty sea air as the tide ebbs and flows. Dachshunds feel at home in Cottage Country

t’s an early July morning as my husband and I finish the last sips of our morning coffee while listening to the weather report on the radio. We are hoping for a long range forecast without rain, so we can pack up our gear and leave the comfort of our summer home for the peace and tranquility of our special island.
“Casey, our standard red Dachshund, rides atop our canoe pack trying to get the best view of the lake.” As soon as Ken begins to make his several trips between the shed and the car, our three Dachshunds immediately become restless. They can sense that their day is about to improve drastically. It isn’t until they spot the canoe being portaged from its resting place that they begin to pace and whine on the enclosed deck. Once their dog crate is carried to the car, they know it’s time to go. It’s less than an hour’s drive to the lock where we launch our canoe. Amongst the many large boats and rented houseboats, we are somewhat of a rarity as we load our gear into our tiny vessel. Once the dogs are secured in their individual life jackets, we are ready to launch our adventure. The sun is shining yet the temperature is still cool with the promise of a hot, humid day as we paddle across the lake amidst cottagers enjoying their morning coffee sitting on their docks. We pass a small island where a small poodle barks a greeting to the three dogs in the canoe passing his cottage. As we veer past a rock face and into another channel we are greeted by a pair of howling coonhounds, whose call echoes across the lake.

Chipmunk Challenge Introducing the next big cottage craze! By Erika Phillips

ave you ever sat back and wondered what’s happening to our youth these days? With all the television and video games, with sports being removed from the school systems and extra curricular events being anything but education or fitness oriented, we’re constantly talking about the state of young people. Little respect, lacking in disciple and responsibility… kids just aren’t like they used to be! But then there’s Sara Carson. Sara’s a teenager, a 16 year-old, in fact. A young adult. She resides in the small northern Ontario town of North Bay, where she has spent her entire life. What makes Sara different than most of today’s teens? She is eloquent and sophisticated, responsible, driven and inventive. Not to mention possessing great foresight and imagination.

Sara was selling rat agility equipment… yes, you heard right! After making contact, we learned that Sara has in fact trained several rats to complete and run full agility courses. “I picked up two furry little rodents from the local pet store and brought them to their forever home,” said Sara. “Oreo and Sparky. I’ve been teaching them tricks like ‘spin’, ‘sit up’ and ‘open it’. They can open drawers and are starting to close them. I adopted two more rats from a couple on the Internet. Phantom and Chum Chum also know tricks. These rats were all taught using positive reinforcement. Then, my grandpa made me rat agility equipment and I started training them how to use it. They enjoyed it so much that they started doing it all by themselves!” Agility has become a huge canine sport that now spans the globe. Around since the early 1980’s, dog agility is a sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run offleash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. Consequently, the handler’s controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal, and plenty of coordination on the part of the handler. Perhaps not surprisingly, Sara has also trained her own agility dog… and yes, even a chipmunk. It all started when spending her summers hanging out in the woods around her grandma’s house in northern Ontario. On a warm summer’s day in 2009, a chipmunk – later named Peanut – started eating out of Sara’s hand. Peanut became very trust- 28 - CottageDog - June 2011
ing, and Sara decided to start training him. She built mini pieces of agility equipment from cardboard and lured him over the equipment. Whenever she had success, she’d offer the chipmunk a treat and say “good boy”. Every time Sara returned to her Grandmother’s house, she’d go to the back door and call for Peanut and he’d come running through the grass to come see her! Her favourite piece of equipment for Peanut was a set of weave poles made from Popsicle sticks that she taped toothpicks to and stuck them in the ground. Peanut was a natural and picked up the ‘game’ quickly. Together, they practiced agility together for over a year. Why agility, we asked Sara? When just eight years old, and after much thought and consideration, her family decided to bring home a puppy. An English Cocker Spaniel was the breed of choice, named Maple. Sara was a natural at teaching tricks and so taught Maple to roll over,
to retrieve things and do all the basic obedience behaviors. One day, while browsing the Internet, she came across a video of another girl running her dog through various obstacles. Sara then started doing the same thing with Maple, teaching him to jump the garden fence and chairs. She did more research on the sport and learned all the training methods. There were no professionals or training facilities at the time in her area so her grandpa built her a jump, teeter and an a-frame to start. Eventually, over time, she managed to save her money and added weave poles, six jumps, a tunnel and a chute. “We had our first agility trial in July 2009,” says Sara. “I thought we were ready since Maple could do everything at home with such confidence and speed, but I was wrong. As we walked into the ring and made our way towards the first obstacle, Maple just went around it and left the ring! I was crushed! Years of practice and then that.”

After a year’s break from competing, Sara decided to retry in July 2010. She’d spent the interim practicing in parks and different areas, building confidence in herself and Maple. That second agility trial led to Maple’s first qualifying score, making Sara “the happiest person on earth!” After further training and the introduction of more advanced tricks, Maple got his ‘Novice’ trick dog title. Every time Sara returned to her Grandmother’s house, she’d go to the back door and call for Peanut and he’d come running through the grass to come see her! This year is already shaping up to be a good year for Sara. Maple has now achieved his expert trick dog title, and as we go to press the pair are attending the AAC (Agility Association of Canada) 2011 Ontario Regionals. Sara’s still training her rats, who seem to be getting smarter and more trusting of her and people every day. And Peanut? On a sad note, Peanut passed away after being attacked by a bird or prey. Here’s Sara’s description of what happened: “It was a horrible day, and I still tear up thinking about it. I was at my grandma’s when I could hear a neighbour knocking on the backdoor. She was in a panic and was talking to my grandma. They ran outside and told me to stay in the house. I didn’t listen (I wish I had) and I saw Peanut rolling around in the grass, in pain. The neighbour said a bird must have grabbed him and not finished what he started. Peanut was brought into the house and put in a cardboard box. We called a few vets but got nothing in response. Soon after, my unbelievable little chipmunk, Peanut, passed away. The very next day, we were in the local paper...” Sadly, since Peanut’s demise, Sara hasn’t as yet plucked up the courage to train another chipmunk, although she doesn’t dismiss the idea entirely. But for now, she’s going to stick with dogs… oh, and rats.

Step 1: The Athlete Find a willing chipmunk. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as fishing with peanuts…
Step 2: The Reinforcement The most important thing to remember when teaching any animal certain behaviours is that you must always hold the ‘power’ in your hands. This usually takes the form of a reinforcement or reward. It’s necessary to convince a wild animal to do what you want it to do without it knowing that you want it to! You can’t force or coerce an animal into doing what you want, they must want to do it themselves. You must use cunning, manipulation, a little reverse psychology, and a really big incentive. And chipmunks, as we all know, love nuts, fruit… and cheesies!
Step 3: The Enclosure Depending on how long you’ve known your chipmunk, you may need to set up an enclosure to ensure your new buddy doesn’t bail on you. Include in it your obstacle or ‘agility’ course. This can be easily constructed from toilet roll tubes for tunnels, wood or cardboard ‘A’ frames, pause tables, straws or Popsicle sticks for weave poles etc. Make sure the enclosure is small enough that your chipmunk has no choice but to go through, over, under or around each object in order to get his reward or reinforcement at the end of the ‘run’. - 32 - CottageDog - June 2011

The problem with lure-based training is that they’re simply following a desired object and not actually engaged or thinking. Step 5: Putting It All Together
When you think the Chipmunk has learned the ‘game’ of going through each obstacle separately, start adding pieces together for a longer course. This is called behaviour chaining: the new behavior you want to build may be a series or chain of related behaviors. Another useful tool is to use a marker or signal to tell the chipmunk that a reinforcement is on its way. You can do this by using either a clicker or some other sound. This method also uses positive reinforcement and is also reward based. The clicker is used during the acquisition phase of training a new behavior, to allow the animal to rapidly identify that a behavior is sought, and also the precise behavior of interest. - 33 - CottageDog - June 2011

Even then the product - which read No DEET, Non Pesticide - had to be pulled off shelves and re-labeled due to a competitor complaint. But owner Lisa Brooks hasn’t lost her sense of humour. She says wryly, “A PMRA agent once told me that if a man’s tie had a mosquito design it would fall under PMRA authority.” She adds, “I think he was joking, but I’m not so sure!” It’s unfortunate that this all-natural product is so hamstrung given the concerns about DEET, which is in many insect repellents that do have a PMRA number. The Ontario Ministry of Health approves DEET but has these warnings on its website when using repellent containing the chemical: • Use federally registered insect repellents such as products containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) • Apply repellent sparingly on exposed skin or on top of clothing • Do not use under clothing • The repellent doesn’t have to be applied heavily to be effective – a light coating will do • The concentration of DEET should be no greater than 30 per cent for adults and no greater than 10 per cent for children • DEET-containing repellents are not to be used on children under 6 months of age • Use mosquito netting for babies and toddlers in cribs and strollers • Use only when needed and follow label directions carefully including restrictions for use on young children and maximum number of applications per day For many parents and pet owners, it’s not exactly reassuring. They might prefer to use a less controversial product, but it’s often hard finding such products as they’re so restricted in the claims they can make. “I use Bush Splash personally and on my pets and we sell it through our veterinarian clinic,” says Dr. Karen Barnes, DVM, and co-owner of North Bay Animal Hospital. “We find that most pet owners are very happy with it. It has a nice scent, and is both effective and well tolerated by people and pets. We used

2 cups 100% whole wheat (chemical free) check the ingredients. 1/2 cup organic apple sauce, 1 mashed organic banana, 1/2 cup pureed organic carrots, 1 egg, 1/2 tsp baking powder and use enough water to bring the mix to a batter ( usually 1 1/2 cups) for the frosting mix some flour with the peanut butter until its no longer runny, add carob powder to color it. grease an 8 inch funnel pan and bake at 350 degrees until a tooth pic comes out clean. could take up to 1 1/2 hours this is a chewy texture cake.

Ingredients: ½ cup all-purpose flour 1½ teaspoons baking powder ½ cup soft butter ½ cup corn oil or vegetable oil 1 x 213ml jar of baby food (Sahara’s favourite flavours include vegetable, beef and or spaghetti casserole) 4 x eggs 2-3 strips of beef jerky or beggin’ strips plain yogurt Step-by-Step Method: 1. Preheat oven to 325. 2. Grease and flour an 8x5x3 inch loaf pan. 3. Cream the butter until smooth. Add corn oil, baby food, and eggs. Mix until smooth. 4. Mix dry ingredients into wet mixture until batter is smooth. Crumble beef jerky and fold into batter.
5. Pour batter into loaf pan. 6. Bake 1 hour and 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack 15 minutes, then remove from pan and let cool completely for about 2 hours, before cutting into dog bone shape. 7. Frost with plain yogurt, and sprinkle with carrot shavings, then cut beefy jerky into strips and place in cake to resemble candles. 8. Enjoy!

As part of our continuing celebration of The Year of the Cat – a nationwide campaign spearheaded by Care for Cats in response to the over-population of felines – Cottagedog Magazine has asked the Captain and crew of the tall ship Picton Castle to keep tab(by)s on the exploits of the ship’s cat, Chibley (or, as the world’s best travelled feline would have it, Picton Castle is Chibley’s ship!). Second only to Captain Daniel Moreland in the amount of time spent on the ship – and in rank – Chibley has sailed around the world four times, been to the Great Lakes twice, made numerous voyages on the Atlantic coast of the US and Canada and the Caribbean, and spent a year sailing around the Atlantic basin. But of all the wonderful places she’s visited, her favourite is Lunenburg. When a landlubber, Chibley loves patrolling the Lunenburg waterfront, lying in the sun on the lawn of the Fishermen’s Memorial or exploring the smells at the Dory Shop. Chibley goes fishing One of Chibley’s favourite pastimes is fishing. Well, she doesn’t love the fishing part as much as she loves the catching. The crew has been particularly successful on this voyage, thanks to a lure called the “squid fiesta.” Chibley doesn’t care much for the methods, but she does care for the results. As soon as there’s a cry of “fish on!” from the aloha deck, Chibley is one of the first on the scene, waiting to see what the crew will reel in over the rail. Once the flapping and flopping and general shouts of delight subside, the fish is carried forward to be cleaned and filleted at the break in the deck just outside the galley. Chibley is always front and centre, putting on her most adorable face in hopes of scoring a piece of the freshest fish you can imagine.
As soon as there’s a cry of “fish on!” from the aloha deck, Chibley is one of the first on the scene, waiting to see what the crew will reel in over the rail. Shawn Anderson of Ingersoll, ON, is one of Picton Castle’s keenest fishermen. A paramedic in his life at home, at sea he has become an accomplished fisher of wahoo, mahi-mahi and yellowfin tuna. Shawn first sailed aboard Picton Castle in the summer of 2007 and hasn’t been able to stay away since, leading him to join the ship for 14 months to sail around the world. Working hard to advance his skills on deck and elsewhere, Shawn has even spent time learning the inner workings of Picton Castle’s engine room, an aspect of the ship that not many of the crew have the opportunity to learn. Shawn applied his skills by taking on a leadership role as lead seaman for his watch, leading fellow crewmembers in the daily duties that a ship under sail requires. He’s also a good shipmate, positive, outgoing and fun to be around. It’s not long now until we head north, sailing from the British Virgin Islands through the North Atlantic to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, with a brief stop at Bermuda on the way. Lunenburg is our home base between voyages and becomes a home for the crew. While there’s always a hint of sadness that the voyage is coming to an end, the day the ship sails into the harbour is a festive one, with hundreds of family members and friends from near and far standing on the dock to greet the ship and cheer the accomplishments of her crew. There’s electric tension in the air until the ship is first spotted sailing around Battery Point, then joyful celebration as she makes her way to the dock and families and friends are reunited. Saturday June 18 is the big day. But until then, Chibley and the crew will be soaking up the sun, sea and gentle trade winds of the Caribbean, one last period of tropical bliss before coming home. CD

f your life was a play and going to the cottage the plot, then most definitely your car would be a primary character. As life up at the lakeside retreat has improved over the years, so too has the journey back and forth. Long gone are the days when the Friday night drive up to the cottage involved crawling along a two-lane, pot-holed highway at a snail’s pace. No longer is spotting Volkswagen Beetles or laying across the rear window trying to get the driver of the car behind to wave back considered a form of entertainment for the kids.
“No longer is spotting Volkswagen Beetles or laying across the rear window trying to get the driver of the car behind to wave back considered a form of entertainment for the kids.” Today, even though the width of our highways has increased, so too has the volume of traffic. The four lanes we travel are often under construction causing us to still move at the pace of a small mollusc. However, now we trip along the highways in vehicles so well equipped and comfortable that only teleporting could be an improvement. Except for a few stragglers, the large gas guzzling SUVs of yesteryear have fallen out of favour with the average conscientious consumer, replaced by popular crossover automobiles. Although the name still suggests off-roading, these vehicles are more closely related to cars and vans than their more sporty utilitarian cousins. It may be debatable, but AMC can probably be accredited with leading the way back in 1979 with their sport/truck/car hybrid the Eagle. Since the new millennium, pretty well every car manufacturer has mimicked their move in one form or another.
Drives like a car One advantage of a crossover is that it drives more like a car than a truck but without having to sit low to the ground. Similar in size to a compact SUV such as the Ford Escape, crossovers still have the luxury of creating space by folding up and down a combination of seats to accom-
modate not only the kids, but also large dogs in crates or held securely behind barriers. Although their size is pretty similar across the board, a crossover’s power varies and is left up to the individual’s driving preference. In some models, one still has the choice of automatic and standard transmission, the latter offering more control on rough cottage roads where automatic is easier on the foot when inner city driving.

If you live in a rural environment and rarely find yourself crawling through urban traffic, the extra expense of a hybrid vehicle at this point in time is wasted since you’re probably more likely to travel on highways with speed limits of 80 km or more. With most crossovers, buyers still have a choice of front wheel or four-wheel transmissions. In many cases, it’s actually front wheel or all-wheel. For the novice, all-wheel simply means that the vehicle is powered mostly with the front wheels and in the event of skidding the vehicle automatically corrects itself by slipping into three or four wheel drive depending on the situation. What type of drive to chose depends on how you define your cottage lifestyle. If you visit the cottage year round, the four by four, or all-wheel crossover, is the better choice. In most cases it saves on having to change from summer to winter tires. Good all season tires will be sufficient. Most manufacturers will also offer a choice of power in the crossovers they sell with either four or six cylinder engines, and a few offer even bigger V-8 engines.
Making the right choice Here are a few things to consider before making a choice that reflects your cottage lifestyle. 1) Do you travel to the cottage every weekend with more than two other passengers and a small dog? 2) Do you tow a boat or full trailer on a regular basis? 3) Do you travel out of the city often during the winter months?
4) Is the driveway into your cottage either rough or steep and do you like to follow the road(s) less travelled? 5) Do you grocery shop in the city for the cottage? 6) Are you a handyman, a DIY cottager who is constantly carting lumber for weekend projects or taking loads of garbage to the dump? 7) Are you planning on building or renovating a cottage in the near future? 8) Will the rising price of gas influence the number of trips you make to and from the cottage? If you answered “yes” to one or more of the above questions then it’s important that you consider power and practicality and not just style and brand when it comes to purchasing your new crossover vehicle.

kay, so you want to getaway to unwind, and all you know for sure is your dog(s) need to come along. Well, I have the perfect road trip destination for you: Nova Scotia. Know this, though – you cannot travel there for a week or two without leaving a big chunk of you and (your dog’s) hearts behind. My two dogs and I have traveled back and forth to NS so many times that my German shepherd co-pilot, Rita, recognizes the landmarks long before I do. This is dog lovers country. The expansive beaches and provincial parks are dog-friendly, and mile-upon-mile of old railway lines have been made into extensive walking trails. A large population of retirees come here from all over Canada (the world, in fact), most of them with their dogs permanently attached to their walking boots. Full of culture and history, Halifax and all the other great UNESCO spots of NS are so polished and pristine with their lush flower gardens and their brightly coloured slate wood exteriors. Every colour combination imaginable brightens the streets of the provinces many delightful seaside towns. These ‘olde worlde’ gems will warm your heart with childhood memories of the cozy homes of our grandparents. As I write this I sit in a window overlooking the harbor of Lunenburg. Lamppost lights on the far side of the harbour outline the green strip under huge trees that spill shade on hot days, lining a favourite walking trail that leads to a beach where dogs can race and splash. The grass is always manicured by the hillside golf course so popular amongst locals. Everywhere you walk, low barrels with wooden lids wait discretely for your bags of dog waste so you don’t have to carry it very far. - 48 - CottageDog - June 2011
I am particularly fond of Lunenburg. So much so that I bought a house here five years ago when I turned 50 to enjoy as I move towards my own retirement. I love the fact that everything is in easy walking distance and all the stores have pet water dishes and unique pet paraphernalia alongside their other treasures. I love the fact that the store owners make it a point to know your dog’s name before they remember yours, and they bring out their treats as readily as their smiles. It truly is a special place to visit and come back to again and again.

Owned by an angel-beautiful woman called Sarah, you can slip in to wash your dog yourself or ask a young attendant to do it for you. Then there’s Ralph’s Place in Lunenburg where an old dog – Ralph, naturally – kisses your face with the sweetest, freshest dog breath as he welcomes you into his pet health food store (the store’s wares are attributed to saving his life many years back). After the initial meet and greet, Ralph spryly returns to his throne, a big sofa chair in the window to watch the sleepy world pass him by. Then there’s Oliver, the kind-eyed red dog who attends his owner’s Chiropractic clinic where Zella, the white long haired cat, resides in her windowsill bed, and the unnamed stray cat sleeps in the low box coffee table in the waiting room (whoever says no one cares about strays obviously forgot to tell the folks in Lunenburg). returning to Lunenburg on June 18th, 2011. I was there when the ship returned to port a couple of years ago; it was like stepping back into the past. Such sights and sounds I have never experienced before, an exhilarating feast for the senses. Bagpipes and ship horns announced her arrival as young sea hands – Chibley’s shipmates – climbed up and down the masts like monkeys. They then laid out their worldly goods along the large dockside buildings, an incredible display of colourful silks, inlaid bone in ornate wood furniture, hand carved boxes and baskets of incredible design, and spices and scented oils from all over the world. It was so authentic a presentation of old-time trade that I half expected Johnny Deep to appear Captain Jack Sparrow!
“Music, people and dogs aplenty were everywhere a part of the city’s endless street festival atmosphere.” Dogs like to be beside the seaside… My dogs and I love Nova Scotia’s many miles of oceanfront parks and long, long beaches. We love the feel of salt air and wind blowing life into our sometimes weary bones as we watch the bold ocean waves splash across the sand. And when nature calls, each beach has those same small toilet barrels for dog waste, as well as potties for we humans to slip into after the constant sound of water has had an effect on us. The famous Lighthouse Route has so many delightful spots to stop and explore. We all know Peggy’s Cove, but what an incredible treasure that spot is to so many after the people of Nova Scotia rushed to support and provide aid to the many families affected by the crash of Swissair Flight 111 in 1998. There’s much more to Peggy’s Cove than its lovely lighthouse. It’s actually a busy spot for commercial fishing, and has numerous uniquely built docks and fish sheds. And just a few minutes away is the tiny community of Blue Rocks, its rugged beauty untouched since the original fishermen cast those first nets - 50 - CottageDog - June 2011

countless years earlier. The day we visited, sun and seabirds filled the air as fishermen went about their business as if we weren’t even there. Halifax is another must-visit location, and is well known for its rich musical and theatrical heritage. It’s also a wonderful place to walk. The dogs and I walked along the harbor front and in and out of the many antique shops and eateries with their outdoor patios, enjoying the bustle as street vendors and buskers did their thing. Music, people and dogs aplenty were everywhere a part of the city’s endless street festival atmosphere. The wonderful Split Crow Pub, Halifax’s oldest, gave my pug and shepherd a little peek inside, and the acclaimed Shakespeare by the Sea Theatre Company also welcomes visitors and their dogs to their outdoor events all summer long. Yes, Nova Scotia may be a bit of drive, but my route through Quebec and New Brunswick from Ontario was not without its own charm and great locations to stop for a night. I particularly love Mike’s Smoked Meats on the outskirts of Montreal with its unbeatable food, cold drafts and Jazz. I love the big truck stops, too, and wonder why they’re only found in eastern Canada? They have such great meals and open areas to exercise your dogs, and most have nearby pet-friendly accommodations. Finally, I guess I should perhaps own up to the one downside that Nova Scotia has. It’s this: once you’ve been there, you simply can’t get it out of your system. It becomes a part of your spirit, and a part of you will always remain in NS. recently had the pleasure of interviewing many experts and specialists in the field of companion animals at the first of its kind AAHA/OVMA (American Animal Hospital Association and Ontario Veterinarian Medical Association) conference held in Toronto. Many excellent examples of how our pet industry is evolving were showcased, but I want to share with CottageDog readers one of the event’s hottest topics: stem cell therapy. It’s been an interest of mine for many years for personal reasons, and I was thrilled to learn that Avivagen Animal Health, a pet wellness company, is now offering this therapy in Canada. I met Avivagen representative Kira Andersen at the conference, along with her cottage dogs Thomas (a Dogue de Bordeaux) and Franklin (a Boxer). Thomas is afflicted with osteochondrosis (OCD) and dysplasia in both elbows – abnormalities in cartilage to bone formation in joints that can affect shoulders, elbows, stifles, knees and hips. Kira explained that Thomas was set to receive stem cell therapy, which immediately sparked my interest in researching the treatment further. Although he’d already received orthopedic surgery, Thomas’ dysplasia was discovered not long afterwards. Not wanting to put him through another operation, especially as Thomas required therapy now for both elbows and both shoulders, Kira soon realized the next best thing was stem cell therapy. “Stem Cells have a great ability to reduce inflammation in an area and in reducing pain,” says Kira. “It’s less intrusive and it’s using cells he already has.” With Kira’s help, I was put in touch with pioneers Vet-Stem in the US and Avivagen here in Canada to better understand stem cell therapy. It’s my hope that this story will put a face on the treatment by following the progress of canines benefiting from it. While I was too late to observe the harvesting of tissue from Thomas, I was invited

to watch the remarkable breakthrough of stem cells being administered to him. In case you’re unaware of the procedure, it involves removing adipose (fat) from the shoulder or stomach area of the patient (see sidebar). “When using stem cells from fat there, are no side effects,” says Avivagen’s Dr. Isabelle Verzberger-Epshtein. Her colleague, Dr. Corey Orava from Vet-Stem, adds: “It has been found that adipose contains an abundance of stem cells.” Dr. Jamie Nickerson from Avivagen explains further, “We like to have the vet give us as much fat as they can. It could be as many as two tubes of fat. Each tube is about 50ml or an average of 90 grams of fat.” To date, Avivagen has processed 15 cases in Canada. Thomas was number 15. I met him and Kira at Mississauga Oakville Veterinarian Emergency Hospital the day of his surgery. Thomas was bouncing around, tail wagging madly while mom held his teddy bear. The bond of love between them was awesome! After the intake and being weighed in at a whopping 114lbs of mostly muscle, Thomas was led away by the technician for pre-op. Catheterized and sedated, by the time we joined him, he was sleeping comfortably as his shoulders and elbows were shaved for the injections. I watched with fascination as Dr. Alexandra Bos administered a needle into the joint and withdrew syno-

To be a breed advocate and work with children. Work: Six days a week: five days at Avivagen Animal Health, and one day with children at the Wellness Program with his boxer buddy, Franklin. Disease: Thomas was diagnosed with OCD in both shoulders shortly before Christmas, 2010. He went for surgery January 4th and came home to recover two days later. He had a tough recovery, being so large with lots of extra skin. Shortly into rehab he was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia. Radiographs were sent to San Diego and New York – the response from both surgeons was that he required further surgery. I made the decision to elect stem cell therapy to treat both shoulders and elbows. Today: Post surgery, and Thomas is well! It makes me a believer and a tad bit melancholy as he now plays and bounces and chases his ball. He has less pain and an improved range of motion, something he’s never before experienced. He now gets to be the clumsy, silly puppy he’s supposed to be (off hours, of course). He looks forward to days of hiking and kayaking at the cottage in Port Perry, especially jumping off the dock… and jump he can! Chosen:
I left the hospital feeling privileged and excited to be a part of this remarkable new breakthrough in pet treatments, and to follow how this therapy was going to affect Thomas, along with another stem cell therapy patient I had the privilege of meeting – a Rottweiler called Sasha, and her owner, Linda Kenny. The day following the stem cell injections I spoke with both Kira and Linda. Both claimed their pets were doing well. There seemed to be no ill effects, and both were eagerly awaiting positive outcomes over the course of the next two to four weeks. “One thing I would like people to think about is this provides an alternative for them,” says David Hankinson, CEO of Avivagen. “There are different treatment methodologies out there that may be better for some dogs, but it’s certainly something that they should be speaking to their veterinarian about, particularly if there are dogs on high dosages of medication.” All of which is wonderful news for the many cottage pets that will once more, thanks to this breakthrough treatment, be able to fully enjoy the great outdoors again.

Love My Dog(s)! A ‘tail’ of romantic proportions By Vince Grittani

ating was not new for either of them. Both had previously been married, each was a parent to teenage or adult children, plus they both had successful careers. So when Don asked Chris out for dinner after being introduced through mutual friends, she felt comfortable enough that with all this in common, between the two of them there would be plenty to keep the conversation going. But early into the evening it didn’t take long for Don to “pop the question”. “Do you… do you… like dogs?” “Do you like dogs? I have five of them. Four Labs and a Jack Russell… and two cats. Oh yeah, plus four kids. They’re all adults.” “Actually, I have one myself.” “A dog?” “A teenage kid.“ “Oh.” “And two dogs.” Don grinned. “Two beautiful Blue Merle Collies names Skylar and Eden”, Chris added. “Not much for hunting, (besides being a BFF),” thought Don. “Perhaps they can keep the Canada Geese from messing up the dock.” Nine years later Don and Chris Peart are married and live happily on Lake Rosseau in Muskoka. Chris’s teenage son is now an adult. The Jack Russell and three of the labs have been replaced. Besides Baron, one of Don’s original labs and Chris’s two collies, the pack has welcomed

Fowler, another lab, and Addie, a German Wire Haired Pointer Don rescued and brought home after convincing Chris another pup in the pack wouldn’t be that much more work. Apparently Blaze, as Addie was originally named, was a trained birding dog and had been sentenced to a life in a hunting kennel. Today she enjoys the freedom of cottage life along with being an excellent companion to Don on pheasant hunts. However, Don will admit Addie does have one flaw. Apparently she likes to jump up and grab the falling prey before it hits the ground, which isn’t a wise move when surrounded by a bunch of hunters with guns.

Outside to the garden and even waited for her at the washroom door.” Overall, this contemporary blended family of humans and canines works well. In fact, their existence isn’t unlike the one found in your typical Brady Bunch-style family. There is definitely a learning curve that one has to experience first hand to really appreciate. Like children, criticizing your partner’s pooches only leads to defensive comebacks and a desire to compare characteristics that include everything from a dog’s appetite to their “fragrance”. Chris and Don do admit to accusing each other of favouring their own original pups. Of course, no two parents have identical disciplinary methods. When they met, Chris was more the free-range parent. She was used to lounging dogs. Easy going, relaxed four legged beings who could climb up and enjoy the comfort of the couch. Neither of these traits were part of Don’s doggie regimen. For Don, dogs are a man’s companion and should follow him wherever and always be at their master’s beckoning call. Dogs have a purpose like hunting and retrieving. This was awkward at first for Chris. The pack followed her everywhere. Down to the laundry room then into the kitchen. Outside to the garden and even waited for her at the washroom door. Eventually, she got used to it. Today it’s not uncommon to find Don sitting alone watching TV in their lovely new addition nicknamed “the man cave” while Chris scans the Internet in the Muskoka Room while holding canine court. Naturally, with two herding dogs, barking was not uncommon – a big “no, no” on Don’s list of dos and don’ts. Although Chris had grown up at her family cottage on Lake Erie, Don did have to fill her in on the physics of sound and how it travels so easily across inland lakes. In due course the happy couple came to a compromise. Bark collars are used to keep the noise down, and there’s one dedicated couch that any member of the pack can enjoy at will. And just as Marsha and Greg and the other Brady kids would have the occasional tiff, it’s only natural that when you bring the clan together there’s a period of adjustment. ages, sex and breed all influenced the pecking order. Even more influential on your relationship with your partner are the dog’s grooming, behaviour and health, all three of which can be financially challenging. However, as Chris and Don have come to accept, when you love someone you love all the “baggage” that accompanies them… and their loved ones.

Most recently, the youngest, Fowler, returned from a month at “boot camp”, Chris explains. Apparently, this loveable wrinkled face lab (who as a pup was once mistaken for a Shar-pei) used to challenge the invisible fence and wasn’t too swift when it came to acknowledging the recall command. Now he’s as astute as his older brother Baron who’s rarely seen walking about the cottage home without a stuffed, slimy object in his mouth – a reminder of his true purpose. Of course, grand-dogs often come into play when their kids visit with their families. And like every good grandparent, they love them like their own, safe in the knowledge that, like the children, they leave with their parents at the end of the day. Both Don and Chris admit that it takes time and patience when bringing two packs of pups together. Old dogs have to learn new tricks – and that includes the owners! But if you work together and agree to give and take, any potentially dysfunctional group can come together as one big happy family. However, there have been documented cases of small dogs (even in cities like Toronto) falling prey to coyotes, so it’s a good idea not to let smaller dogs wander in the woods. Unfortunately, the size of a dog doesn’t seem to matter to creatures like skunks and porcupines, as I can attest to from personal experience.
If you’ve ever had to clean up a dog after it’s been sprayed by a skunk, then you know this is something to avoid at all costs. Several times during my years in Canada my dogs have had run-ins with both skunks and porcupines, and they’ve always ended up on the short end of the stick as a result of these encounters. If you’ve ever had to clean up a dog after it’s been sprayed by a skunk, then you know this is something to avoid at all costs. You would think a dog would learn from experience to avoid this particular creature in the future, but it seems many of them don’t, and henceforth are repeat spraying victims. The same can be said for dogs getting a bunch of porcupine quills in their nose and mouth. This can have more serious consequences, and usually involves a trip to the vet to have the quills removed under anesthesia, unless you’re quite experienced in removing them yourself and have the rare dog that will let you do so. The moral is that it’s never a good idea to let your dog run in the woods unsupervised, even if you think it’s capable of taking care of itself. Of course, an argument could be made to dog owners in cottage country that they can eliminate problems associated with their dogs in the woods by working on the recall command. while this may be possible, it does take considerable time and effort to do so. For example, I once was able to teach two of my dogs to come back on voice command from 75 yards away. This was accomplished through daily reward based training sessions over a period of three months, increasing the distance by approximately one yard each day (guess I’m giving away my American roots here by using yards instead of meters). The bottom line is that there are many potential outcomes for dogs whose owners live in the woods, and several of them can involve negative consequences for the dogs involved if they are not under the proper guidance and leadership of their owners.

He has appeared nationally on Canada AM, CBC’s Doczone, The Outdoor Life Network, and Discovery Channel, and lectures at Colleges throughout Southern Ontario.
