Precious Resource recently scouted a stunning house on Long Island Sound. Not so unusual, you might say. It has an indoor pool. Fairly common, you might think. But the ingenious architecture of the structure made water the focus of the home no matter where you were. Upon entering, I stood five feet from an indoor pool encased in a glass cube, so it formed a central courtyard and every room had views of the pool. In fact, many rooms had views of the pool on one wall and of Long Island Sound on another. It truly blurred the line between indoors and out. It was more jaw-dropping because I drove to the house and didn’t jump on a plane to some tropical island. My eyes kept looking at these two bodies of water the entire time I was in the house! It gave the house a calming vibe and I did not want to leave. ■ Like most people, I am drawn to water in any shape or form. It is my secret energy source. It refreshes me and brings me peace of mind (although I dread heading to the pool to swim laps in the winter!). With summer just ahead, I am thinking more and more about spending as much time as possible in, on or near a body of water. For me it is a liquid asset and I seek it out. But as much as I love it, I am becoming more aware of what a precious asset it is and how scarce it is in different parts of the world. With climate change, this wonderful resource is in danger, even here at home. In fact, nothing annoys me more than driving past a home where the automatic sprinklers are on—in a rainstorm! ■ While attending the National Kitchen & Bath Show in Orlando this past winter, I noticed an increased effort by manufacturers to design products that conserve water with smarter technology. Dishwashers, shower heads and hands-free kitchen faucets, for example, save water while being functional and beautiful. Manufacturers know that design sells, but also that consumers won’t give up what they love just to purchase more environmentally friendly systems. In a sense, beauty and conservation are not mutually exclusive. So it is up to all of us to do our part. And then we all win.

am having people over for the first time in three years!

Apart from family, there have been no lunches, dinners or parties here at my home. It is fortunate that my colleague Melissa Groher is getting married, and I am able to host her bridal shower. The fact that much of my house is made up of decks that extend over the Silvermine River—providing great views and perfect outdoor social-distancing opportunities—has emboldened me in this happy endeavor. ■ A metamorphosis of sorts has occurred indoors, as tarnished silver and dusty crystal have emerged from a cocoon of neglect. All the polishing and washing has brought back a familiar feeling, for I am at my happiest washing, drying and storing my treasures. ■ I tend to fuss. It takes me days to set the table and organize flowers and place settings. So, imagine my delight when I recently attended the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House gala in New York, where 40 tables were decorated by top designers. We were seated at the fabulous Buccellati table—described as a “whimsical otherworldly totem” that I am sure was 10 feet tall—which was festooned with trees and branches sporting a myriad of exotic plants, including a vogueish and a mercifully empty hornet’s nest. Nestled in this cornucopia was all manner of silver-coated objects, centerpieces, dishes and flatware. Oh, heaven! ■ In the coming summer months, I hope we can all find more socializing opportunities—whether casual or formal— and lots of fresh air.

HEN IT COMES TO ARCHITECTURE, you could say the Quakers were the original modernists. As early settlers of Nantucket, they brought their spare religious practices and equally sparse building style to the island in the 1650s. While later residences constructed during the whaling boom would introduce everything from louvered shutters to elaborate pilasters and porticos, it was the Quaker approach that attracted architect and Workshop APD principal Andrew Kotchen when he designed a compound for a Connecticut family. “The Quakers distilled everything down to its simplest form, and it’s that idea of form stripped of all embellishment that we try to apply to everything we do,” says Kotchen. The two structures he conceived—both crafted with white cedar shingles and featuring flat-topped, unadorned pergolas— honor that tradition. access and the other located at street level. Razing the existing structures brought the challenges of the property into focus—among them flood-plain restrictions that mandated elevating the lower-level structure, and a dune back between the properties that needed to be maintained. “For the main house, we didn’t want a large structure that would have negative impact from the harbor,” says Kotchen, who along with landscape designer Miroslava Ahern used strategic placement of decks, concrete planters and plant material to help the four-bedroom house meld with the environment. “Grasses were a no brainer,” says Ahern, who mingled beach grasses with a profusion of hydrangeas to soften the arrival sequence. “We were right on the harbor, so it made sense to use something that would survive easily in that environment and was attractive and elegant.” A series of pathways and a winding driveway connect the lower house to the guest house, where the structure intentionally appears like two buildings split apart with a pool in between. The outward focus is evident everywhere, from the living room chaises where someone cuddled up with a good book need only glance up to see the vista to the meticulously formatted kitchen where a floating sofa attached to the marble island mandates the outward gaze of anyone sipping a morning coffee. In the primary suite—with its prime prow-of-the-ship location—the cozy quarters open to a private terrace where the sea grasses lap the edges, and an outdoor shower provides the ultimate intouch-with-nature experience. When the cool ocean breezes blow, a freestanding fireplace in the living room warms the soft upholstered seating. Along with twin chandeliers that spray out an assembly of wooden sticks in a dramatic starburst pattern, the result is a relaxed boho chic vibe with a dose of sophistication. “The homeowners came to the table focused on casual elegance,” notes Kotchen. In the guest house—where the emphasis shifts to the casual end of the spectrum—layers of blue and brown in an array of patterns and textures, and a suspended fireplace all contribute to the more playful atmosphere. “Fun was the operative word,” says Kotchen, about the five-bedroom building that includes a gym and media room. “The idea was to have a completely different experience from the main house, but have spaces that encourage going back and forth.” With the finished product beautifully showcasing the architecture, interior architecture and interior design arms of his company, Kotchen shares that the project is featured in their new book, Workshop/APD Homes: Architecture, Interiors, and the Spaces Between: “The book illustrates the holistic vision of connecting inside to outside that we’ve worked for 20 years to build on Nantucket, and this house embodies that ideal.” ✹ Images by Read Mckendree, from Workshop/APD Homes: Architecture, Interiors, and the Spaces Between by Andrew Kotchen and Matt Berman, Rizzoli New York, 2022.

OR A FAMILY WITH THREE YOUNG children moving into their first house outside of Manhattan, this sprawling 6,000-square-foot home near the water in Darien was their suburban dream come true. They enlisted designer Lilly Bunn (of her eponymous New York City firm) to free the space of its beige origins and create a home that could accommodate every member of the family, all year round. Bunn designed the clients’ previous apartment and was well equipped to transition their existing pieces into the much larger footprint along with new finds. “This area of Darien feels like Nantucket,” Bunn says of the locale’s tall grasses and views of Long Island Sound. “The house was decorated in the same light colors throughout and felt so beachy. We wanted to make it more flexible for all times of year.” For the front living room, the designer envisioned a space where the family could celebrate Christmas. She opted for a high-gloss raspberry paint and layered in rich fabrics, like a sectional covered in green Holly Hunt velvet and a textural John Roselli animal-print bench. “We also lowered the enormous mantel and had Chesneys custom-make something a bit smaller,” Bunn explains. 58

“I want you to be able to use a room at all times of the day, all times of the year,” she says. “My projects are always kid friendly, so you can feel comfortable drinking your coffee on the sofa and feel just as comfortable having people over wearing high heels and a cocktail dress in those rooms.” Bunn was able to take advantage of the roomy floor plan and create spaces with varying intentions. For example, the front entryway feels very formal, with its mural-like Gracie wallpaper, antique commode and bright carpet. Meanwhile, the back entry features a mudroom that’s a bit more playful, complete with a bright Schumacher butterfly-motif wallpaper, vintage sofa and desk for schoolwork. “It’s happy and upbeat to welcome the kids home from school,” Bunn says, noting that the mudroom is one of the family’s favorite spaces in the house. “For an evening party, you can put candles by the front door to lead guests to that entrance, then you can leave all of the family stuff in the mudroom. It’s nice to have two entries; in an apartment, you only have one.” Similarly, the homeowners opted to forgo a formal dining room in favor of a large kitchen that could not only host parties and but also serve as the everyday hub. “And the space overlooks the pool, so if someone is in the kitchen cooking, they can still watch the kids outside,” she adds.

The kitchen also leads back to the family room, which is decorated in neutrals with a John Roselli grasscloth wallcovering for a lighter vibe. “I like to have a balance of color and no color,” Bunn notes, adding that the primary bedroom was another opportunity for a quiet moment. There, mom and dad enjoy a respite with white Quadrille drapery and a cream Beauvais carpet. Children’s rooms, on the other hand, are always going to have color, the designer explains, thanks to all their toys. But the home wasn’t designed for 62

the little ones to be relegated to their rooms. “We wanted to create lots of spaces where the family can be together,” Bunn confirms. “They knew that moving from NYC to Connecticut meant they would be entertaining and hosting, and this house would really be the hub for their family to do everything they needed to do. We wanted it to feel like a Connecticut house— cozy and traditional—but to bring in some of the more modern architectural details of the house.” ✹

This bathroom, designed by Vincent Falotico, is part of a glass box that includes the primary bedroom. The tub area is separated from the bedroom by a large pocket door, and the wood floor from the bedroom flows into the tub area, so that when standing in the primary bedroom, full views include the glass corners at both sides. The wood of the floating vanity adds some warmth to the room, which is mostly stone and glass. The tile is from Greenwich Marble & Tile; the millwork is by Yuri Construction.

This ensuite bathroom by Denise Davies was designed for a growing boy who loves the color blue. The space captures a fun-yet-sophisticated vibe. Graphic blue and white tile from the Cement Tile Shop, glass shower doors, a floating vanity and a round mirror are in keeping with the modern and updated design. The vanity is from RH, as well as the swing arm wall sconce. The mirror is from Room&Board; faucet is Grohe.

The team of Nancy Davilman of ND Interiors and Kimberly Martelli of KTM Architect worked closely with Stephen Moliterno of MJS Contracting to create this primary bathroom that marries rustic and modern elements. The bespoke driftwood vanity by Diffused Productions topped with a bluestone-inspired concrete countertop by Concrete Encounter grounds the space, while the nautically inspired lines of marble sourced at the Tile Shop add visual flair. ary Morant likes not only to speak Dutch but also to live like the Dutch. When the noted landscape and portrait painter was living in Holland with her children and then-husband years ago, she learned a new word she still intones: gezellig. “In Holland, the term refers to a home that’s cozy or inviting, lived in,” she says. “I wanted my home here, in Westport, to feel gezellig. Being surrounded by all the things you love creates that feeling.” She refers to her two dwellings that occupy the same uncannily narrow waterfront lot (the main house is a mere 20 feet wide). Her onebedroom cottage, which embodies a gezellig feeling for its Connecticut fisherman’s cottage-like look, fronts Sherwood Mill Pond, while the larger, new house at the opposite end of the lot faces Long Island Sound. A grassy lawn area fills a middle ground between the dwellings. Westport architect Peter Cadoux was commissioned by Morant to gut the existing 1940s-era cottage and reinvent it as a new vernacular-style dwelling, while simultaneously building a brand-new june 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

larger house to replace a decrepit one that had occupied its site for decades. Cadoux, who has designed numerous houses along the Connecticut shoreline, recognized— and welcomed—the dynamic at hand: “It’s always more challenging to design a smaller house that has to live bigger.” By that, he means that he needed to find a way to design a new house with three bedrooms, a cottage with one, and accommodate both on a lot so narrow that one side allows for a seven-and-a-half-foot breezeway and the other a six-inch one. “Peter and the builder did such a great job,” says Morant. “They were able to restore the cottage so that it still feels and looks old, while making a new house that is more midcentury modern, with its open plan and airiness.” Even though Morant had lived in Darien for 30 years, she has yet to forget her Southern roots, having done much of her growing up in Alabama. “The moment I saw this property, I was reminded instantly of Lake Martin—a still, quiet body of water where I spent a lot of time as a girl,” she says. “Just like there, Westport, this Cozy Harbors (clockwise across spread from top) The primary bedroom has a custom bed constructed by Segerson Builders, dressed in an Yves Delorme quilt and Serena & Lily linens; the headboard is upholstered with a Kravet fabric, while a David Weeks sconce provides a reading light. spot, is magical. It’s another world.” One tactical element of her past that she insisted on including was “tabby,” a distinctly Southern building material, whose recipe of ingredients requires a mixture of burned oyster shells, sand, water, ash and concrete. Ironically, just behind her Westport property, on Hummock Island, is an oyster farm, and while those shells were not allowed to be used to make tabby (reserved instead to reseed Long Island Sound waters), the relationship between Morant’s land and those of her

girlhood struck her. Cadoux and his team cooked up a version of the material, using it to skin portions of the façade of the main house. “No one had seen that material up here,” says Morant, “and just having it in place now reminds me of the South. Even though this material is new and fresh, it looks old. We love old, decrepit things in the South and anything with a story. This material tells a story to me.” Working in close consort with her aunt, Carolyn Malone, a practicing interior designer in Atlanta,

Morant created the interiors of both dwellings. “My aunt and I spent a whole day picking out different whites to use in the main house,” she recalls, the two of them skewing toward warmer whites on the two upstairs levels, including an attic area that features an outdoor deck, and darker hues on the lower level. “When you have this many windows and this much water on both sides, the light changes and the rooms take on different characters,” she says. While much of the prevailing color schemes inside harken to those of the nature outside—sand, water, sky—Morant has accessorized her rooms with her own paintings, as well as objects collected by her late mother, including first-edition books, sculptural Moulthrop bowls, and pewter. “Everything on the built-in bookshelves in the living room are things that mean the most to me. Alisha and Sean McFetridge Designed by climate-conscious couple Alisha and Sean McFetridge, the innovative new RainStick is a plumbing fixture that creates a spa-like shower that cleans and recycles shower water, saving gallons while boosting the rate of flow. Residents of the Okanagan desert region in western Canada, they grew up conscious of water conservation, a concern heightened in their early careers. While working in Kenya for an education charity, Alisha saw students missing school in order to walk hours to fetch water, and Sean’s energy consulting led him to deplore the massive amount of water he saw wasted in restaurant kitchens. Married after meeting at an ecology film festival, their shared concern advanced into a need to do something about water conservation. Realizing bathroom use consumes 50 percent of home water, they zeroed in on the shower, where an average 10-minute session uses up to 26 gallons. Recalling summer jobs where he helped clean and recycle the loop at a city water park, Sean started sketching concept drawings and consulting designers for insight. After several prototypes, and setting up a makeshift “wet laboratory” crate where friends were invited to test showers, the RainStick was launched. rainstickshower.com. How does RainStick work? Instead of going straight down the drain, water sprayed through the nozzle is collected by a pump, cycled through a filter to remove soaps and impurities, disinfected by a UV light, and re-sprayed through the nozzle, recirculating up to 5 times. Simultaneously, the pump increases the rate of flow so the water is ejected with more satisfying pressure. What was your approach to design? A shower is a simple thing: valves of hot and cold water and a drain. We had to keep it extremely simple—durable, easy to clean and maintain. What was the biggest engineering challenge? The pump: We had to find a pump that was small enough, quiet and powerful. It took 18 months to finalize; it was a big component. Why are there top and bottom spout outlets? The lower spout can be engaged for cleaning, and it is a place to attach the optional handheld nozzle. Why can’t I buy one for my current shower? We say it is for new construction and renovation. There is an electrical component, and the main reason is the catchment basin that needs to be installed in the shower floor. Any plumber is familiar with that procedure. The cycling feature can be disengaged so it can also be used any time as a traditional shower. What is the effect? It reverts to regular 1.5 gallonper-minute low flow, and the benefit of the pump’s increased three-gallon flow pressure is lost.

What are customers’ reactions? There are two different camps: Some people are passionate about the water savings, others like the experience of doubling the water flow. Why did you include a Wi-Fi component? Using it is optional; it works fine without it. But those who use it can figure out how much energy and water they’re saving and can set their preferences, so you press a button and it goes right to your preferred temperature and flow. You’re married business partners. What’s the division of labor? Sean is CTO, the engineer developing the product. Alisha has a master’s degree in climate change and worked organizing global

events. She is CEO and manages the business end, sales and marketing. What songs do you sing in the shower? Oh, that’s the place to turn on the Calm app. Besides hiking with Milo, your Bernese Mountain Dog, what are your hobbies? We’re lucky, Kelowna has mountains and a lake. In the winter, we ski on the same snow that melts into the lake where we swim and boat in the summer. What is your ultimate goal? Currently, people use about 90 gallons of water per day.
