S eptember is always a special month for me. In 2004, we launched this magazine. Over the past 18 years, I have fallen more deeply in love with Connecticut than I ever expected. And for this girl, who started her life across the globe in Bahrain, that’s saying a lot. As a young child, my family moved often because of my father’s work. I remember always having to say goodbye to friends. Every home felt temporary, almost like I was a visitor even though I spent years in those homes. At CTC&G, we have always been about a “sense of place.” ■ Fast forward to last year when our daughter got engaged, and we started to look for the perfect venue for Adaire and her fiancé, Alex, to celebrate their wedding. We scoured beautiful locations in Fairfield County, in the Berkshires and on Martha’s Vineyard. They found their special place in Sharon, CT. It seemed that Lion Rock Farm had all the right elements for these two. It was in their home state, where they both grew up and still love to spend time exploring on weekends. Adaire said it best: “Not fussy, but chic with so much to offer.” Alex added, “I was born in London and have lived around the world, but consider Connecticut my home.” We cannot wait to share this special corner of Litchfield County with our guests in October. ■ You would think that after 18 years, I’ve seen all there is to see in this state, but I am still discovering new places in Connecticut. While there are neighborhoods that keep drawing me back, there’s always a new area that I am excited to explore. Spending time preparing for the wedding has given me the opportunity to get to know Sharon and its surrounding areas, rich in architecture and culture. While I make a habit of spending time throughout Connecticut, I am amazed at how many residents don’t take the time to explore. I am hoping that over the years CTC&G has revealed just how rich and beautiful our home state is. I encourage all of you to take a trip or two this fall—drive the coast or go to the Litchfield Hills or head to a museum in Hartford. And, honestly, I have never been to the “Quiet Corner.” We are all so busy going places far. Why not go near? Now is the time to take in the journey. I know you will come away feeling great that Connecticut is your home. I know I do.

Here Has always been a lot of talk about history and architecture in Connecticut. From the relatively modern Philip Johnson’s Glass House and the work of the Harvard Five in New Canaan to 18th-century houses, such as the colonial built by Isaac Parmelee in 1713 (now the Hyland House Museum in Guilford) and the Ebenezer Avery House in Groton where the British brought injured soldiers after the battle of Groton Heights in 1781, and all of the known and unknown houses in between, there is usually a story to be told. ■ This has made me think about my own little piece of architectural history. The dam and the foundation of what is said to be the oldest mill in continuous operation in the United States lies on my property. First built in 1688 on the Silvermine River in Silvermine, Connecticut, the Buttery Sawmill burned down and was rebuilt in 1741. ■ I dug up architectural drawings for the mill on the Library of Congress’s Historic American Buildings Survey, and they look just like contemporary plans for modern barns. It makes me smile, for it appears that whether in the 1680s or the 1980s or right this minute, a simplicity of purpose defines the best architecture we have. CEO New York Times called the Buttery Sawmill one of the damagedirreparablyTheMerrittforintowereshowsThiskindbuildingsandphotographedmostpaintedofitsinAmerica.1938photologsthatconvertedguardrailsConnecticut’sParkway.millwasby the great flood of 1955.

A SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATION DELIVERS A STYLISH SALON AT THE DELAMAR SOUTHPORT A Fresh Look
R ecently, CTC&G caught up with Elie and Danielle Camoro— the owners of Camoro Boutique Salon—and their decorating team of independent interior designers Eric Cohler and Christopher Maya. The husband-and-wife team had years of experience working in New York salons, but when Covid hit, they moved to their home in Fairfield and saw their clients out of their pool house. At the suggestion of one of their clients, they enquired about a space at the Delamar Southport. This new location at the hotel would keep them closer to home and their young boys. The Camoros were familiar with Eric and Christopher, yet they had never collaborated on a project before. The time seemed right to bring the four together. –DJ Carey What was your original concept for the space?
Elie: Our clientele is mostly New York expats who are happy to find their salon in the ’burbs. A unique point about this project is that the two of you have your own design firms. How did this collaboration come about?
MCDERMOTTELLEN 54 ctc&g cottagesgardens.com september 2022
Danielle: I wanted a bright space for our well-travelled clients to unwind that would become their happy place. We also wanted our staff to feel inspired every day. The vibe is relaxing but on point to every detail. Huge, beautiful windows, design inspiration at every turn and beautiful craftsmanship.
Eric: Christopher and I have always talked about collaborating on a project over the years, and this was the perfect opportunity.
Christopher: We worked flawlessly together as we have a similar design sensibility.
SPOTLIGHT
Christopher: Lighting is crucial in a hair salon because it needs to be clean and even. The mirrors were backlit, and the downlights were strategically planned around the workstations. The hanging light fixtures in the waiting room and the wash stations are mostly decorative.
Eric: Because the salon opens directly off the parking lot, we kept the space quiet by using soft upholstered furnishings, then added citrus trees, as well as shutters for each window.
What was the original space like, and what types of challenges presented themselves?
september 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g 55
How did you create such a quiet space?
Danielle: The blue high-gloss paint in the powder room!
Eric: The space was originally the nondescript office of an investment firm and was formulaic gray carpet, white walls, rubber baseboards, dropped ceilings and florescent lighting
The variety of textures and materials in the space gives it a more residential feel. Can you talk about some of the materials you chose?
Christopher: Fabrics for the waiting room and dressing room are a mix of mohair and cotton prints. The three decorative light fixtures in the salon are custom made of natural plaster and hang from the ceiling by natural jute rope. The high-gloss painted blue walls of the powder room provide yet another texture, which evokes the natural element of water.
What are your favorite elements in the new salon?
Christopher: To create a peaceful sanctuary with a wellness vibe, we limited the number of chairs to seven. Additionally, for a serene feeling, we used wideplank, white-oak floors, plaster walls and ceilings.
Eric: Texture breathes life into a space adding dimension and visual interest. The fabrics and wallcoverings are a mix of practical and luxurious.
Elie: The handcrafted cerused white oak and the tambour profile stations.
Tres Chic (clockwise from far left) White-oak flooring is from Carlisle. The powder room sports high-gloss paint by Floe Painting; artwork is by Mary Maguire. INSIDE STORIES BEHIND AREA
C onnecticut was recognized as a colony nearly 400 years ago, and since then we’ve amassed a wide range of housing styles. That’s why a “classic” Connecticut abode can mean anything from a clapboard Colonial to a midcentury modern and— enjoying a revival—the Shingle-style home. To celebrate our state’s rich architectural history, we bring you six listings, each one representing a housing icon.

ARCHITECTURAL ICONS
A seven-acre Lyme compound—most of it painted a pretty pink—is nothing short of a history lesson. At the heart of the property are two adjoining circa-1760 homes, one of which belonged to war hero Lieutenant John Mansfield. Antique details include windows salvaged from Middlebury College and an 18th-century walnut staircase from a barn in Maine. There’s also a post-and-beam barn that was moved to the site from the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The property lists for $1,975,000 with Paul Smyth of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty in Old Lyme. 860-867-6620.
height, exposed-beamed ceilings, a massive hearth, expansive walls of glass and an easy passage to the kitchen and dining spaces. It also connects to an outdoor pergola and covered breezeway, offering a fire pit and access to the climate-controlled, four-car garage. Plus, the home is surrounded by dramatic hardscapes, featuring colossal stones, wild meadows, and a meditation folly. Finally, fun fact, the property was owned by Jane-Howard Hammerstein, the screenwriter and granddaughter of the composer Oscar Hammerstein. It lists with Pels Matthews of the Matthews Group, affiliated with William Raveis.
rowayton is a seaside village famous for the beachy enclaves that surround its central harbor. In the heart of town—equidistant from the train station and the water—is a shingled, cottage-style home, just listed for $1,695,000. The entryway features a curving, three-story staircase that ascends to a luxurious primary bedroom suite, boasting a private balcony, a fireplace and a soaking tub, plus a large walk-in shower. At the heart of the main floor is the formal dining room with French doors opening onto the stone patio and an all-white kitchen and adjoining living room with a stone hearth. Liz Beinfield and Zoe Hamann of Compass Connecticut have the listing.
Another rustic-modern compound—this one styled like a Lodgepole Pine House—sits on 15 acres in Bristol. The materials used to create the 4,500-square-foot interiors are outstanding, including 100-year-old white oak floors, recycled chestnut counters and custom cabinetry crafted from birch. It also boasts such luxe features as a lap pool and Jacuzzi in a glasswalled pavilion—suitable for year-round use—with a yoga platform built into the terrace and a wood-fired pizza oven. On the grounds are more than 500 specimen trees, organic gardens and a wisteria-covered gazebo. Back inside—and perfect for cozy winter weekends—is an impressive wine cellar housing 3,000 bottles. It lists for $1,750,000 with Mela Case and Kate D’Addabo, both with Remax Right Choice.

Another Shingle-style beauty has just hit the Westport market, listed for $3,950,000. While traditional in its aesthetic, the 6,100-square-foot interiors seem purpose-built for relaxed entertaining. The recently updated kitchen, for instance, has gorgeous “leathered” granite countertops, three dishwashers and an easy flow into a great room. There’s a wine-tasting room with two large Sub-Zero wine coolers and a third-floor rec room for gaming and Ping-Pong. And, on the one-acre lot, there’s a pretty bluestone patio with a fireplace. It lists with Mersene Norbom and Lainie Floyd of the LM Homes Team, affiliated with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty.
Finally, in Greenwich, an all-American antique is newly listed for $2 million. Once the main house on what was called Hobby Farm, the circa-1870 Colonial has been beautifully renovated. The nearly 4,000-square-foot interiors still include period features, such as wide, pumpkin-pine floorboards along with fireplaces with ornate surrounds. But the kitchen is all new, featuring a marble island, a wet bar, a breakfast nook with built-in seating, and an adjoining, wood-paneled den. Danielle Claroni and Christian Perry of Sotheby’s International Realty have the listing. —Diane di Costanzo & DON’TS

espite a career that began with studying interior design in South Carolina and followed by a move to New York City— where she eventually opened her own interior design studio—Catalina Castaño has never lost sight of her Colombian roots. “I grew up in a playful, colorful country,” she shares. “My background figures into all of my designs but always mingled with my client’s ideas.” So, when a couple with two grown children and a penchant for midcentury modern approached her to work with them on their Litchfield County residence, Castaño responded by crafting interiors that honored the homeowners’ style while bringing her own signature vibrancy to the mix. The residence in question—a contemporary structure on a tight sloping lot—was designed

by architectural designer Harold Tittman as an “upside down house.” “The structure is sandwiched between two roads with the main entrance and living spaces on the same level as the upper road,” explains Tittman, who notes, from there it’s down one flight to the bedrooms followed by the final descent to the media room and gym. “The boat house is on the other side of the lower road,” he adds. To maximize the incomparable lake vistas, the house is intentionally long and narrow, and even the mudroom has a view. “Windows are a trademark in my architecture, and I made sure each room got extra-large openings,” Tittman says.

Taking her cues from the environment, Castaño began in the living room by introducing a commodious two-piece wool and mohair sofa in a deep shade of green. “It reminds me of the trees,” says the designer, who added a marble coffee table with a walnut base. “It looks like it’s floating,” she says about the additional nod to nature. A pair of wood-frame midcentury modern chairs sporting geometric Hermès wool fabric with splashes of subtle orange and teal sets the tone for the palette that repeats throughout the house. imported from Belgium, and Venetian plaster walls provide a consistent, neutral backdrop.
Meanwhile, teal velvet drapes with a contrasting linen trim in the primary bedroom look like they were color matched to the lake. “You open these drapes and you feel like you are touching the water,” says Castaño. A wood-frame bed of her own design is upholstered in velvet, and glass and brass sconces resembling branches look to be growing out of the headboard. “I wanted it to feel like a beautiful luxury five-star hotel.”
In the family room—where Castaño also designed the tuxedo-back sofa topped with Hermès covered accent pillows—a pair of art panels in bold hues enliven the gathering place. As she explains about the pieces from the homeowners’ collection, “They are made out of metal and are from a 1930s theater set.”
Elsewhere, intentional interjections of blues and greens—like the shimmery blue ceramic tile in the son’s bathroom, kitchen bar stools stained a Midori green, and a teal velvet bolster pillow on the primary suite bed—guarantee the lake connection is never lost. But just in case such gestures proved too subtle, Castaño left no doubt about the importance of the water locale in the powder room where a floating marble vanity backed by wallpaper featuring fish darting in every direction makes an unforgettable statement. About her design strategy Castaño says, “In Colombia, we cover every wall with color but in this country that is too much. Instead, I use pops of color to make the spaces happy.” ✹

One of the characteristics of centuries-old Connecticut residences that appeal to both men is the way that such houses overtly reveal their evolution.
But with this house, a 1923 addition was so seamlessly added that it looks original. “The addition is exceedingly sympathetic to the rest of the house,” MillerMilleremphasizes.admitsto being a natural born collector, though he insists after hav ing lived with Landy for some 20 years that his husband, too, possesses the

henever they are inside their Redding home, Bill Miller and Paul Landy liken themselves to Goldilocks.
Just as the heroine of the fairytale finds herself comfortable enough in the home of the three bears to wander the rooms, try out the furniture, eat a good meal, and then fall asleep in their bed, so, too, do Miller and Landy feel completely at home in their 1773 Colonial. “The house is not too big for us or too small,” says Miller, who has recently retired from his work as a private banker. “Goldilocks found everything to be just right for her, just as we do, though we had to work to get the house to feel perfect. It had been abused by its previous owners.”

What they agree on—and both adhere to—is maintaining a careful balance between collecting and cluttering. “We do understand that differentiation,” says
Color Ways (this page, top to bottom) Original period colors found under wallpaper were replicated through Benjamin Moore’s Historical Colors series, notably a Colonial Blue for the kitchen. In the den an 1820 convex mirror through Lennox Cato visually expands the room. A rustic table in the kitchen serves as an additional dining area, its surface lit from above by a Civil War–era chandelier. See Resources inclination to accumulate good things, “though Paul might deny that.” But as creative director of retail for New York’s Neue Galerie, Landy is used to purchasing fine objects and displaying them in ways that get them noticed. In assessing their home collections, though, comprised of such things as 18th-century engraved scenes of ancient Greece, Noh masks, Wedgwood basalt ware, Sicilian porcelain plates, Grand Tour depictions of an erupting Vesuvius, and vintage deer heads, Miller claims that he revels in symmetrical groupings, while Landy better understands placement. “I’m a neoclassicist at heart,” Miller claims, “which means I’m all about balance and symmetry— and that can get boring, whereas Paul understands the interest that comes with asymmetry. He has a certain way with displaying things, a real knack.”
While their period house is now filled with period items of many eras, nothing feels dated. As Miller explains, “We feel done with our collecting, and so we like to characterize our house now as being contemporary but with a classical feel.” ✹
Miller. Despite what might at first glance seem a plethora of fine objects and furnishings, artworks and accessories, no room feels overwhelmed by things. Because of the couple’s uncanny skill at placing goods in a room, every object stands out on its own. “If you’re not careful, you could wind up like Citizen Kane,” says Miller, referencing the Orson Welles character who amasses so many things he has trouble finding any one of them. Indeed, as a way to further emphasize the objects and furnishings they own, the couple has kept the walls saturated with colors—deep greens, jewellike reds, Colonial blues. While their paint hues were chosen from Benjamin Moore’s Historical Colors series, what appears in their rooms is actually authentic and original to the house. As Landy and Miller explain, when they first began the renovation of the house in 2018, they removed all of the uninspiring wallpaper, beneath which were found the house’s original paint colors, many of which they attempted to replicate. The deep tones work to highlight every object. “I’m also a bit of a magpie,” says Miller, referencing the less-than-shy bird that likes to admire itself in mirrored surfaces. Throughout their rooms, Miller and Landy have added touches of gold and gilt, notably for the way they play on rosewood and mahogany furniture surfaces. “Colonial houses were dark,” says Miller, “and candles helped reflect the gold on furniture and objects, throwing light around a room. And the more polished a surface, the greater the reflections. Gilding brightens things up.”

Blair, a former broadcast journalist and producer, was married for 23 years before her husband, composer Marvin Hamlisch, died. Blair was living in Bedford and walking with a friend when she fell in love with the charm of Rowayton. As luck would have it, Garfield’s barn was on the market and the perfect spot to start fresh: “The ceilings are soaring, it has such a patina that you can almost feel the history,” she notes. “It doesn’t feel dated, but also doesn’t feel new and soulless. It brought tears to my eyes.” She sold her Bedford house furnished and arrived in Rowayton empty-handed—save for an Argentinian mirror and a commissioned candelabra. “I had to start over but was happy to,” says Blair. “I like to keep memories in my heart.” Blair’s former living space was contemporary, and she felt the need to carry on Garfield’s legacy. “I didn’t want it to look decorated, and I wanted it to seem that it has been there forever,” she says. hen Terre Blair walked into her his toric home in Rowayton for the first time, “It took my breath away—I knew it was going to be my house,” says Blair. The house, built in 2005 by late visionary designer Barbara Garfield, is an 1800s reclaimed barn from New Hampshire. Garfield—a famous fixture in town for her anti-McMansion movement to live simply—reassembled the old barn in her own voice and filled it with antique architectural elements from Germany and France. “One of the reasons this house is so special to me,” says Blair, “is that of the four she did here [in Rowayton], this was the last house she lived in. I am grateful and honored to live here.”
While searching for authentic French antiques, Blair met Kathy Sachs, who owns Le Barn Antiques, and the house took on an entire new layer. “Anything that is fake, you feel it,” says Blair, “Authentic French pieces kept to Garfield’s vision.” In the entrance, a Swedish chair sits with a midcentury chair covered in a zebra print, and a Normandy table. The mix is tranquil and serene. Says Blair, “It is very healing. What you are noticing is me: mix ing things of different styles but somehow keeping that same harmonious feeling.” That same vibe reverberates throughout. The living room houses a coffee table from Le Barn Antiques, a sofa covered in an unpretentious white denim and a Burmese chair. Perhaps her biggest lifestyle change though, is her garden. Having never planted a garden before, Blair turned to Stone Barns Center and the Vegetable and Cut Flower Garden Kits it offers for home gardeners (pro ceeds benefit the center’s community garden initiatives and outreach). “They gave me so much confidence, and the garden worked!” says Blair. “I could pull things out of the ground and eat them, and it was through Jack [Jack Algiere Director of Agroecology at Stone Barns Center] that I was able to do this. W EEKENDS WERE MADE FOR relaxing at this historic farmhouse in bucolic Washington, CT, especially now that it’s been fully reimagined to suit a modern family of five. After enjoying the place as a rental in the past, the homeowners purchased the rustic 1830s country retreat to create a family getaway and soon connected with Susan Bednar Long of S.B. Long Interiors. “We both were weekenders owning homes in the area and became friends,” notes Long. “I remember going to their home for a party and loving the rambling house with wonderful barns and discussing the history of the house with the husband.”
Durability of materials and easy maintenance were top of mind for the clients, who love to entertain. The overall goal was to brighten the space, modernize functionality and bring the residence back to its classic roots. “Like most old country homes, it has a rambling interior—the main original struc ture has a long barn-like addition on the back,” says Long. “Over many years, things had been remodeled inside without much thought to the home’s tra dition and original design. The client asked me to clean-up the interior from years of quirky remodeling choices as a rental property.” Updates included building out the kids’ study area, remodeling the primary bathroom and closet, gutting and reconfiguring the kitchen/breakfast area, redesigning and building out the attic space, mudroom and laundry, plus adding a new wet bar in a narrow hallway between the front entry hall and the dining room.

When designing the primary suite, Long answered the clients penchant for jewel tones by adding pops of plum to a neutral palette of taupe and cream. And she incorporated the hallway between the closet and the bath room to create a luxurious closet. “We used every available wall for cabinetry and added the built-in bench with storage below,” explains Long. “Mirroring the cabinet doors was a way to elevate the space and make it brighter.” ✹

Long added a wet bar into the hallway between the dining room and the front entry hallway that leads to the living room. “It’s such a central location—it made a lot of sense for the flow of entertaining,” she says. “I wanted to make it modern, using rustic materials. The property has amazing stone walls, and I wanted to bring the stone inside. The contractor—Sean Woodward of Woodco LLC—had to carefully chisel out some of the existing old chimney wall to create space for an under-counter wine cooler.”
Shades of blue enter the space with seascapes from the homeowners’ collec tion and a pair of tall Oly wingchairs. A set of double doors open into the more casual sunroom, which runs the length of the living room and leads out to the back pool patio.
In the living room, a custom sofa in a Delany & Long acrylic linen is paired with a round four-foot limestone coffee table with a hand-forged base.
The original attic space was remodeled during Covid into a private office space and media room, and a barn-like extension off the original home was redesigned to be the kids’ wing with media room, game area and bedrooms. “The kids’ area was one of the first phases we did,” says Long. “They have three boys, who ranged in age from 7 to 14, and their main request was easy seating to allow them to have friends over and play video games.”
Colonial Williamsburg’s colors inspired the palette for the kitchen and dining room. “I love blues, greens and grays, and that seemed the right fit for the interiors in general,” says Long. A Target Practice painting by Stephanie Lear Henderson lends a modern touch to the space and balances a large green built-in. “We extended the kitchen cabinetry over to eliminate the previous hallway space and brought the ovens and pantry over to that side,” explains Long. “And we installed a new window behind the banquette to allow more sunlight over the table and designed a window over the sink to allow food to be passed easily to the outside patio during parties.”
“A lot of our redesign focused on millwork details, colors, fixtures and fur nishings that unified the rooms, while giving a relaxed and fresh feel for their country retreat,” says Long. “The careful mix of modern with traditional ele ments was important to me. I wanted to celebrate the wide-plank floors and exposed wood beams while marrying it with modern furnishings. The clients like color, so we used accent paints and fabrics in key areas.”

I am fortunate that quite a number of celebrities dine at our restaurants. —Sharon King Hoge
Smiles, Everyone! Whole lobster (left) from Happy Monkey (above), Vongerichten’s new Greenwich restaurant. happymonkeygreenwich.com.
Involved in every aspect of developing dining spots, he masterminds concept, menu, architectural design, staff selections and trainings. His original New York restaurant—dubbed with his childhood nickname, JoJo—and Happy Monkey are among the more than 40 acclaimed eateries he oversees worldwide. Constantly developing new concepts, Vongerichten has published several cookbooks and frequently appears as a television guest. jean-georges.com.
Alsatian born and bred, Jean-Georges Vongerichten honed his skills in his native France apprenticing with world-renowned chefs before traveling to Asia, where he discovered the exotic flavors of the East. Instead of classic meat stocks and creams, his signature cuisine features intense flavors and textures from vegetable juices, fruit essences, light broths and herbal vinaigrettes.

112 ctc&g cottagesgardens.com september 2022 MONKEYHAPPY MEET THE CHEF
Explain how the name Happy Monkey came about? The restaurant features a prominent mural depicting famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo along with her playful pet spider monkey—a nod to the restaurant’s name. We designed the restaurant to be a fun spot for the community to come together over food—a place that gives you a daily dose of happy, as its name implies.
Why did you choose to study cooking in Asia? Growing up, I lived in a small village, so when I got a taste of traveling, I was hooked. I felt like I had to explore my mind and palate. Within 24 hours of landing in Bangkok, I went to the local food markets and tried so many new dishes. It was the beginning of my culinary journey and inspiration. What is the driving force of your dishes? My food compositions are product driven. Once I distinguish that main ingredient—a vegetable, meat or seafood—I experiment with different flavors, spices, acidity levels and sweetness that complement and elevate that product to ultimately create a perfect dish. What makes a flavor adventurous? Utilizing a flavor or ingredient in multiple ways. Take ginger— you can juice it, infuse it, grate it, chop it, make a sauce out of it. There are so many different uses for it—and it’s always an adventure working with it.
What was your reaction when you received your first Michelin star? It was a combination of emotions. I felt so proud of my team and the work we had put in together. I felt accomplished but yearning to challenge myself and earn a second and third star. Why have you “long eyed Connecticut as a prospective location”? With the pandemic, a lot of people moved out of the city, so we thought it would be a great time. I spend a lot of time on the weekends in the summer out of the city. Greenwich is an amazing town with so much history. I have been many times and just love it there.
What is the aim of Food Dreams, the nonprofit you founded with your daughter Louise? Food Dreams is dedicated to bridging the gap between the working culinary community and underprivileged students, helping them to access culinary education and providing them with various externships at our restaurants, mentorships, and career opportunities.
Connecticut diners are ordering shrimp tacos with spicy peanut sauce, roast cauliflower with sour cherry mole and other unique Latin dishes at Happy Monkey—a new Greenwich restaurant by one of the world’s most famous chefs.
What is one of your earliest food memories? My mom made me crushed overripe banana with orange juice squeezed on top. It was just the perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.
What is gained by cooking at home? I love where family and friends are gathered together and all participating in the cooking, making it a true experience for everyone. You can spend time with the ingredients and close ones. It’s more relaxed when you don’t need to rush and you can enjoy the whole experience. You’re constantly on the road. What do you gain from that? Traveling is where I get most of my inspiration. I am constantly looking for inspiration and opening my mind to new ingredients, flavors, cooking techniques. Who is a celebrity you’d like to cook for? I want to cook for everyone—whether they’re actors, musicians, performers, in the tech field and more.
