Artful Living

Living an artful life in the Hamptons means immersing oneself in a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. From strolling through our quaint villages dotted with galleries showcasing both local talents and renowned masters to attending intimate concerts in historic venues, every day offers a new opportunity to engage with the creative spirit. ■ But it’s not just about observing art; it’s about living it. In the Hamptons, creativity permeates every aspect of life, from the farm-to-table feasts prepared with locally sourced ingredients to the meticulously curated interiors of elegant homes. It’s about hosting intimate gettogethers where conversation flows as freely as the wine, and where every detail, from the floral arrangements to the choice of music, is thoughtfully considered. ■ There’s a palpable sense of authenticity that grounds the Hamptons lifestyle. It’s about connecting with nature through long walks on windswept beaches and finding inspiration in the simplicity of a sunrise over the bay. It’s about fostering community through collaborative projects and supporting local artisans who infuse their work with passion and purpose. ■ In the Hamptons, summertime isn’t just a season; it’s a state of mind—an invitation to embrace life’s beauty and live it with a sense of creativity and wonder. It’s a reminder that true artistry isn’t confined to museums and galleries, but can be found in the everyday moments of sun, sand, and sea.

Palm Beach North

Last month we were delighted to announce the addition of Palm Beach Cottages & Gardens to our portfolio. Set to join the market in Winter 2024, this latest addition joins the beloved ranks of HC&G (Hamptons Cottages & Gardens), CTC&G (Connecticut Cottages & Gardens) and NYC&G (New York Cottages & Gardens). ■ Palm Beach Cottages & Gardens will uphold the characteristics of its sister publications, with an oversized format celebrated for its visual and editorial excellence as well as an inclusive view of local and international design trends. ■ The uptick in new homeowners, the growth of design retailers, and the migration of distinguished Design Professionals (DPs) to the area calls for a publication that encapsulates the essence of Palm Beach’s sense of place. Harriet Mays Powell, our longterm luxury and jewelry editor will helm the new magazine as editor. ■ I have just returned from a Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce breakfast at the acclaimed Breakers Hotel. A huge affair demonstrating the year-roundness of the market (no more snowbirds, they said) was attended by captains of industry and several Design Professionals (DPs) I know from the Hamptons who have homes and businesses there.

I even heard a couple refer to the Hamptons as Palm Beach North!

■ The premier issue of Palm Beach Cottages & Gardens will arrive in December/January, followed by a Spring issue in February/ March 2025. ■ For additional information regarding publication or advertising, please contact me.

DAVID MASELLO

Writer David Masello’s love for the Hamptons has deep roots. “I found a new group of friends, and for every summer, for years, we rented a house out on the East End. I’ve never forgotten those days, the new friendships that arose, and the memories of going to places like Sam’s Pizza, the Swamp, biking along Bluff Road to Atlantic Avenue Beach, doing the Sunday crossword puzzle on the train ride back to the city.” Featured in this issue’s “The Art of Restraint” (page 106), Masello says, “And with every story I get to write about a home in the Hamptons, there’s always a happy ending.”

JENNIFER BOLES

As a noted author and design historian, Jennifer Boles has long been a chronicler of great style. Her two books, In With The Old: Classic Decor from A to Z, and Inspired Design: The 100 Most Important Designers of the Past 100 Years, are not only coffee table staples, but they offer remarkable lessons on interior design and legendary tastemakers within the field. Boles is also the founder of the website, The Peak of Chic. For us, she penned the story on a Southampton residence by Allison Babcock (page 74).

MICHELLE GERSON

“Before I was an interior designer, I worked for eight years as a clothing designer, designing sports wear and evening wear for Victor Alfaro. I went to Parsons for fashion design, and I took some courses in drafting so I could learn scale.” Gerson, featured in this issue’s “The Art of Color” (page 96), says of designing in the Hamptons that it’s usually not the client’s first home, so there’s a little more freedom to let loose. “It’s a place to entertain, they’re not as serious and more willing to do some outrageous stuff! Plus, I really love a beachy vibe.”

Time and Again

Old-fashioned annuals pop again in unexpected new colors.

Who will be the new Dahlia ‘Café au Lait’?

The flower that led to the rebirth of the dahlia and a revival of cutting flowers in general has some new friends in equally interesting shades. Dare we say, “Gladiolus anyone?” — Alejandro Saralegui

1. ZINNIA

The bold and brassy colors of Benary Giant zinnias are fine

for some, but we’re liking softer tones like this pink and lime green one that is the little black dress of the cutting garden. For even more subtle colorations, seek out the Dawn Creek series of zinnias.

2. SNAPDRAGON

If you pinch the flowers, they roar, hence the name and a favorite of children for ages. The Chantilly line of snaps are a favorite at Floret Farm for their warm colors, strong tall stems and citrus-y scent.

3. NASTURTIUM

This classic of Monet’s garden has been undergoing some breeding in the past few years, resulting in a greater color range. ‘Empress of India’ is great for the name alone, and shown here is ‘Ladybird Rose.’

4. STRAWFLOWER

You might think that strawflowers are decidedly 1970s hippy, but they have been enjoying a recent revival. The demand for local flowers throughout the year makes these a prime candidate for dried winter arrangements.

5. QUEEN ANNE’S LACE

There are several of these umbel type flowers, including the roadside Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota), but we prefer Ammi majus. ‘Dara’ is a dusted purple color, while ‘Green Mist,’ as the name implies, is dewy freshness personified.

6. GLADIOLUS

They aren’t just for funerals any longer. And a bright lime color like this one is a

fresh addition to a summer arrangement. Also, keep a lookout for species grads that are perennial and have a more delicate flower.

7. CALENDULA

A staple of vegetable gardens, the calendula (or pot marigold), is having a moment with new softer colorings like this pale salmon-toned ‘Pink Surprise,’ perfect for mint julep cups.

8. COSMOS

White-pink and red were the colors for cosmos back in the day. New breeding programs have brought about burgundy flowers like ‘Rubenza’ and, shown here, ‘Apricot Lemonade.’

9. AMARANTH

You might associate amaranth with dusty Victorian parlors and great grandmother’s garden. But, again, new colorations have brought them back to life. ‘Coral Fountain’ is a new one that will blend in much better with any of the flowers here and, of course, ‘Cafe au lait’ dahlias.

ISLAND INSPIRATION

Artist and textile designer Serena Dugan of Serena Dugan Studio just released four new patterns to her portfolio of wallcoverings and fabrics. The Shelter Island collection was inspired by her East Coast home, where she has incorporated her latest designs. The collection includes: Anya, an ikat-inspired micro floral; East End, a contemporary wave pattern; Jakarta, a floral which blends Indonesian batik with traditional Jacobean elements; and Camille, a grasscloth depicting painterly botanical vines. The former Chief Creative Officer of Serena & Lily launched her Sausalito, CA, studio in 2020, and in addition to her artwork, fabrics and wallcoverings, she has designed a line of rugs in collaboration with Erik Lindström. The Inside Scoop on East End Real Estate

LIVE LIKE A DESIGNER

Sure, you could take on a renovation of your own, but not everyone has the time or patience for that, especially in the summer! Luckily, some remarkable properties are currently up for grabs that have already benefitted from the skilled hand of an uber-talented design pro.

DREW’S NEWS

One of the most high-profile of the bunch is owned by actress, producer, and talk-show host Drew Barrymore. OK, though not a decorator by trade, Barrymore has a popular home furnishings collection, a smart magazine, and even helps design other people’s spaces with aplomb on her morning TV show, which has hit a ratings high. (Even the kitchen on her set is next-level enviable.) So it’s no wonder that her own 1.7-acre Sagaponack estate at 16 Old Barn Lane—currently on the market for $8.45 million with Kathy Konzet of Sotheby’s International Realty—looks like it’s photo shoot ready. The residence, a converted barn from 1920, has

been added onto over the years and now occupies 6,850 square feet and contains seven bedrooms. Inside, unique touches include original beams and wood flooring as well as a pale-pink study. A roof deck adjoins the onebedroom guest cottage, and the grounds include a pool, pool house, bocce court, and vegetable, herb, and flower gardens. Barrymore reportedly paid $5.5 million for the idyllic escape in 2019 before embarking on the renovation.

SHELTERING IN PLACE

Over on Shelter Island, the in-demand interior designer and former chief creative retail officer for Ralph Lauren Home, Alfredo Paredes, is parting ways with his iconic 1883 Victorian at 21 Harbor Lane. He renovated the home and added a front porch, but was careful to use a light touch when making any changes. The 0.7-acre Dering Harbor property features 3,928 square feet of living space, including five bedrooms, a library, and a screened porch. The listing—available for $9.1

million with Peter M. McCracken and Rebecca M. Shafer of the Corcoran Group—also comes with a pool and a deep-water dock. And if you haven’t heard, Paredes is the genius behind the design of Sailor, a new restaurant addition to Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood from renown Chef April Bloomfield.

MAGIC MAKER

Another uber-talented architect and designer, Steven Gambrel, is known for creating magic when it comes to historic Sag Harbor homes, including his own—and many others across the country, and the property at 20 Union Street is no different. He recently embarked

on a three-year renovation of the three-story 1796 Victorian, which once served as the “Summer White House” for President Chester A. Arthur (the 21st to hold the position, from 1881-85). The 5,900-square-foot sixbedroom house has several fireplaces, a media room, a library, and a wine cellar as well as an outdoor pool. Corcoran’s Susan Breitenbach, Cutter Koster, and Felicitas Kohl hold the $12.995 million listing.

ENGLISH ACCENT

Nearby at 186 Main Street in Sag Harbor, the historic Hannibal French House is on the market for $18.9 million with Compass’s David Cox. Decorated by London-based Veere Grenney, the 6,500-square-foot seven-bedroom residence retains many original details, contains 10 fireplaces, and supposedly boasts the only formal ballroom in Sag Harbor. The 0.6-acre property—which was constructed in 1834 and expanded in 1860—comes complete with a pool. (Grenney has a new 256-page tome out with Vendome Press that beautifully captures his personal Moroccan compound in Tangier in case the new owner is in need of additional inspiration from this iconic designer.)

BRILLIANT ABODE

Not ready to commit to a full-time house just yet? Designer Anthony Baratta is renting his spirited and joyful two-bedroom, two-bath

Flanders getaway for $25,000 (July) or $30,000 (August through Labor Day), through Lisa Cea of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. The postmodern pad incorporates vibrant pops of color and pattern and includes a sauna, a fireplace, a detached workspace, an expansive deck for dining and lounging, and a pool—all the makings of a relaxing summer escape.

BIG DEAL

THIS ISSUE’S BY THE NUMBERS

Buyers in search of a true summer compound may not need to look any further. Situated on a private peninsula spanning more than 21 acres, 70 and 71 Cobb Lane in Water Mill boasts two residences, 3,100 feet of private shoreline on Burnett Creek, and access to Mecox Bay. The offering—priced at a whopping $99.5 million—features 24 bedrooms between the two properties: A Barnes Coy−designed 17,000-square-foot residence overlooking the bay with a tennis court, saltwater pool, and two-story pool house; and a more contemporary 28,000-square-foot home, conceived by A+M+L Architecture, which includes an indoor swimming pool, a spa with sauna and steam room, a 14-seat theater, a bowling alley, a half court for basketball, and a 350-bottle wine cellar. “Rarely does a compound of this size and scale exist on the water, let alone come to the public market,” says Preston Kaye, co-founder of Hedgerow Exclusive Properties, which holds the listing. —Jean Nayar

SURF’S UP IN MONTAUK SMOOTH SAILING

It may be known as “The Last Resort,” but the historic hamlet of Montauk is anything but, with its own unique scene that persuades people to continue driving east on Montauk Highway.

A major draw is the newly renovated Montauk Yacht Club, which reopened in May under new management and features the Ocean Club Montauk restaurant and bar. A refreshed fitness center and spa, racquet facilities, café, and indoor and outdoor bars are also on tap for this summer.

BE OUR GUEST

Entrepreneurs and commercial real estate developers who missed out on snapping up Montauk Yacht Club but are hoping to ride the wave may be in luck, as a few former inns and motels are on the market. In fact, the former Montauk mainstay Ruschmeyer’s at 161 Second House Road is currently on the selling block for $22.5 million with Hal Zwick, Sean Deery, and Jeffrey Sztorc of Compass. Complete with 19 newly renovated rooms, a 162-seat restaurant, and a separate nightclub, budding hoteliers have the chance to put their own stamp on a beloved venue. The 10,250-square-foot resort also comes with an additional one-acre parcel and four-bedroom dwelling at 151 Second House Road.

THE VIEW FROM HERE

James Blueweiss BEFORE THEY WERE BROKERS:

The same Compass team is also marketing 685 Old Montauk Highway, where a 5,940-squarefoot inn, restaurant, and bar boasts ocean views and year-round appeal. The $7.25 million threelevel property is currently configured with 11 rooms on the second and third floors. And at 411 West Lake Drive, a 6,240-square-foot motel is tucked away from the busy waterfront yet a short walk to Montauk Harbor, shops, and restaurants. Listed by John D’Agostino of Martha Greene Real Estate, the $9.35 million facility is comprised of eight one-bedroom efficiencies and nine studio efficiencies.

—Pamela Brill

As a former senior vice president of Meredith Corporation and CBS Television Distribution, Brown Harris Stevens’s James Blueweiss is no stranger to highstakes deals. After growing up on the water in South Bellmore, New York, Blueweiss studied marketing and communications at the University of Wisconsin with dreams of getting into show business. Over three decades— while living in New York City—Blueweiss sold countless shows, including such hits as Martha Stewart Living, Home Again with Bob Vila, and Better Homes and Gardens. Another beloved project came in 2007, when he purchased the intellectual property rights for the iconic New York City nightclub CBGB and launched a series of licensing ventures and experiences to breathe new life into the brand. And a couple of years ago, Blueweiss decided to use his hefty rolodex to pursue another passion, real estate—this time out East, where he has owned a home for 25 years. “I can actually pinpoint my love of show business and real estate to the episode of I Love Lucy in which Lucy and Ethel go on a bus tour of celebrity homes in Beverly Hills,” says the agent. “I saw it as a kid, and while I was on a family vacation in Los Angeles at the age of 12 I made my parents do our own driving tour. Even now, when my friends visit the Hamptons, my favorite thing to do is take them on a driving tour of celebrity houses.” This longtime love of homes and professional experience marketing design talents has set him up perfectly for a new chapter. “I’m also a people person,” says Blueweiss. “You meet a lot of strong, bright, demanding people in showbiz, and being able to navigate different personalities is important, whether you’re dealing with a celebrity or a real estate client.” —A.

When Designer Allison Babcock’s clients purchased their Southampton beach retreat a few years ago, they acquired a home that was nearly perfect for them. Built in the early 2000s, the Fleetwood & McMullan-designed house had great bones, a classic shingle-style exterior, and ample room to accommodate the new homeowners’ grown children and guests. The only thing that did not entirely suit them was the home’s traditional interiors, which conflicted with the couple’s pared-down aesthetic. With the approaching summer season a mere six months away, a time-consuming interior renovation was out of the question. Instead, the new owners engaged Babcock to cosmetically update the interiors to make the house their own. Fifth and Dune Partners, a contracting and construction firm, was also part of the collaborative team.

To establish the clean look that the couple envisioned, Babcock first lightened the entirety of the home’s interior using whitewashed floors and Benjamin Moore’s “Swiss Coffee” paint, which she specified for every wall and trim. “Everything is fairly neutral so that you’re not shocked when you move from room to room. It flows really nicely,” Babcock explains. Color was introduced judiciously to avoid disturbing the tranquil environment. Fabrics and accessories in soft shades of blue and green, which echo the exterior landscape, accent the home’s more casual spaces like the sunroom. Elsewhere in the house, the couple’s art collection, which includes pieces by East End artists, provides refreshing splashes of color.

Because the house was to be furnished from scratch, Babcock employed one of her favorite design techniques to prevent the interiors from seeming too newly assembled. “I love mixing the modern with antiques and artwork. It makes the room more interesting and collected-looking,” she says. The entry hall, for example, is simply appointed

A similar mix of styles appears in the living room, where streamlined white upholstery and elegant Art Deco-style armchairs mingle with nature-inspired pieces, like stone and wood tables and even a brass floor lamp shaped like a cluster of flowers. “The organic touches bring down the room’s formality and speak to where we are,” remarks Babcock.

Traditional beach house furnishings, such as rattan furniture, linen fabrics, and lightweight woven rugs, are sprinkled throughout the home, further establishing a sense of place. Other coastal classics, however, have been reimagined. Grasscloth wallcovering, which envelops the small but dramatic powder room, is embellished with geometric-patterned embroidery, an unexpected twist on a perennial favorite. Babcock took similar liberties with the obligatory shell accents, which she used sparingly. In the primary bedroom, a plaster limpet chandelier and a mirror surrounded by coral-like branches reference the nearby water, doing so in a high-style way.

When indoors, the couple and their children spend most of their time in the comfortable kitchenfamily room, a bright, open space that segues nicely to the outdoors, where the family can also often be found during their summer visits. Lured there by a pool, tennis court, and a covered patio that is used for outdoor lounging and dining, the owners are particularly drawn to the home’s gardens, which had been another major selling point of the house. Designed twenty years ago by Hollander Design Landscape Architects, the inviting landscape required little updating other than the addition of a vegetable and herb garden. By seamlessly blending the old with the new, Babcock and her clients enhanced what was already a beautiful house. Now light, airy, and filled with sophisticated furnishings, the home feels refreshingly timeless, thereby ensuring its lasting appeal. ✹

THE ART OF COLLECTING

Designer Eddie Lee takes on the task of melding weekend guests with an assemblage of the owners’ favorite things, all with an effortless aplomb.

After Eddie Lee’s future clients had visited a summer home that he had designed for their friends, the couple called upon the celebrated designer to devise a unique challenge for themselves: to create a guest house in Water Mill for not only their grown children, friends and extended family, but also a space that would seamlessly house their classic car collection.

Although their modes of transportation are as covetable as a painting on the wall or a sculpture atop a pedestal, they are not static objects, nor too precious to put into use on Route 27.

“The cool thing,” says Lee, “is that they use all of the cars.” Weekend outings and Sunday drives ensure that one vehicle or another is in regular rotation. And when not in use, they’re sure-fire conversation starters for guests and friends.

Although the new residence features a traditional shingle-style façade that echoes the main house next door, the interiors differ. The primary home is more classic in style, while Lee was called upon to create something more au courant, melding an open-concept floor plan with a decidedly more contemporary mix of interior detailing and bespoke furnishings. Architect John Laffey was Lee’s collaborator on the project, and was integral to the home’s overall design, as well.

“I wanted it to be a nod to the machine age and to industrial design without it being too in your face,”

88 HC&G | COTTAGESGARDENS.COM | JULY 1, 2024

says Lee of the references to the adjacent, enviable automobiles. “It’s a refined aesthetic.”

The homeowners also love to host a party, and the guest house is a beacon of hospitality; those who gather can effortlessly flow from one dining, entertaining, and lounging space to the next. The floor plan combines these spaces into one vast room, while textural and organic materials keep everything grounded. With a canape in one hand, they can peruse a variety of cars — from coupes to convertibles, and beyond.

“One of the main drivers of this project was making the design fun, as well as creating spaces that are worry-free when entertaining,” says Lee. “I incorporated a number of tailored upholstered pieces that don’t require constant fluffing, but it’s an informal, relaxed atmosphere that still feels chic.”

As for the entire collaboration, when Lee is in the driver’s seat of intuitive design for his clients, it’s zero to 60 in terms of creating high style—all the while at ease. ✹

the art of COLOR

TDesigner Michelle Gerson creates a happy and harmonious home with a fresh palette and optimistic point of view.
BY SHANNON ASSENZA | PHOTOGRAPHS BY BRITTANY AMBRIDGE

his is such an inviting home. What kind of first impression did you want the foyer to make?

Designer Michelle Gerson: To me, I felt like the house needed to look super chic and really pretty because the client is really pretty! If you met her, you would be like ‘This is so her house!’ She wanted it light, but wanted to use color, to make it kind of fun. It’s boring to do an allneutral beach house all the time. She added a lot of art with color, which is cool.

Which piece of furniture or décor do you feel executes the theme or concept you were going for the most?

MG: Our main thing was to make it a house for entertaining, so we changed what would normally be the living room into a bar. So, the bar is really the big signature piece in the house—we think it’s the call to party! Right behind it is an entertaining space that brings you through the house to the outdoor space, so it all flows really nicely.

I notice there are pops of color and patterns in the living room. How does a designer strike the right balance?

MG: This living room is also like a lounge. The color is in the marble—it’s lilac— and there are colored pillows, and a lot of color in the rug that was custom made by Art & Loom. We were inspired by the pillows and the Frank Stella artwork.

How did you select the furnishings for the space?

MG: The sectional and ottoman are custom, and the swivel chairs are from Dooq, made in periwinkle mohair. The sofa is made out of a soft polyester—it feels like a teddy bear.

What was the design directive in the junior primary bedroom?

MG: The junior primary is a perfect example of how we mix high and low; the bed is from Lulu & Georgia, the nightstands and lamps are from Crate & Barrel, and we put in a gorgeous wallpaper from Moth Paper and did everything else simple. We made a bedroom that wasn’t a million dollars—it’s very doable and cost efficient.

Tell me about the design choices in the kitchen.

MG: We happened to have beautiful cabinets by Ciuffo Cabinetry. We did a high-gloss finish on top, mixed with natural oak whitewashed bottom cabinetry, and mixed in some bronze to give it an extra chicness. We picked the most gorgeous calacatta gold marble we could find. Beautiful marble takes you really far when it comes to a kitchen!

I love the wall covering in the dining room. How did you choose it?

MG: The wall covering is from de Gournay, and is in a pink opalescent and silver motif. I showed a sample to the client, and she was like, ‘I love it,’ and I was like, ‘I love you!’ I always say you’re only as good as your clients, and if they aren’t able to trust you, and take leaps of faith with you, they miss out on opportunities. ✹

THE ART OF RESTRAINT

For a Victorian-era house in Water Mill and its new, adjacent guest cottage, Designer Sergio Mercado achieves big effects with a less-is-more, lighter-than-air palette

Sergio Mercado was able to do something that most designers only dream of—he slept a few nights in the home whose interiors he had designed for a client. As he does every year, Mercado was set to attend the Hampton Designer Showhouse and when he mentioned the date to his client in Water Mill, she insisted he stay in one of the guest rooms he had created.

“It’s very rare that you get to inhabit a home you’ve designed,” says Mercado. “As a guest, you’re really given the opportunity to test things out—anything from figuring out whether the espresso machine is in the right counter spot to seeing if the drawers in the dresser work.” For this stay, Mercado occupied the pool house, though he had also done the interiors for the main residence.

The principal residence was built as a carriage house in 1896 and reflects its late-Victorian pastiche of brickwork, cedar shingles, and pitched roofs.

Mark Matthews, the Southampton-based architect, fashioned a wholly new pool house in keeping with the architectural style of the main dwelling. He characterizes the two-bedroom house he designed on the site of a garage as “a true guest cottage instead of just a pool house.” And just as he sought to visually link the new dwelling to the old, so, too, did Mercado wish to have both dwellings echo each other in terms of interior design.

Although Mercado has completed numerous projects in New York City, the Hamptons, and upstate, he says that “the vibe out on the East End is definitely where I can best practice my signature style.” For this project, he admits to having been granted virtual carte blanche, an apt term for a designer who likes bleached, neutral, unfussy, muted interiors. But what might appear at first glance as simple, is in fact a perfect example of Mercado’s honed ability to exercise the art of restraint.

Natural Beauty

(opposite) The pool house was designed by Mark Matthews Architecture. The umbrellas are by Santa Barbara Designs. See Resources

“She and I were speaking the same language from the start,” he says, referring to the client, an enlightened philanthropist (among other endeavors). “For instance, she suggested lime washed walls, and she was right.” Mercado rhapsodizes about the resulting visual texture that the process produces—a streaking effect that both captures and reflects light.

“I just love undyed natural textiles and that’s what we used as our springboard here,” says Mercado. Among the first changes was to expand and open up the entry, and to then have it meld visually with the living and dining rooms beyond. “The living room still had its original supporting ceiling beams, but the entry

had none.” Mercado cleverly sourced antique oak beams, had them stripped, bleached, lightly stained, then coated with a matte sealer to replicate the beams in the other rooms. “The idea was to maintain the original feel of the house and honor its history.”

Mercado also professes a “love of corners,” pointing to a long sectional that courses the length of a bay window in the living room and wraps a windowed corner. He also likes shapes, as evidenced by his embrace of vigorous geometries—a rectangular coffee table that culminates in a sweeping curve, an exuberant Francois Salem ceramic Rubans lamp at the entry, and lighting fixtures that assume the pres-

ence of hovering sculptures. The entry is lit with an Italian frosted globe tinged with a muted rose hue, while an elliptical incandescent source in the dining room appears to wear a multi-tiered skirt of hand painted porcelain pieces.

During his stay in the pool house/guest cottage, Mercado realized his work on the project was a success. “I’ve worked through many different design styles, but I know now that this particular project really reflects the aesthetic that represents my personal style. When a client gives you the freedom to create, without limitations, it results in work that makes you and them happy.” ✹
