The sun mighT be seTTing earlier and The days growing shorter, but why would anyone ever snub their nose at glorious, splendid September? For many people, it’s the most beautiful time of year, whether they’re strolling Manhattan’s sidewalks on a weekday afternoon or sitting on a dock on an Upstate lake or ambling along nearly empty Hamptons beaches. And if the busy summer is any indication, the train’s not stopping anytime soon. ■ How far we’ve come since the pandemic dawned nearly three years ago. In the past few months, I’ve been overwhelmed by the new vitality of New York City, excited to attend in-person press previews at design buildings and showrooms and to see brand-new product introductions. I’ve been especially impressed with the way the restaurant industry has bounced back. Within the past two weeks, I enjoyed dining at Harry’s Table in the beautifully designed Bellini Italian market near Lincoln Center one night, only to be bowled over by the heady Persian cuisine at Eyval in Bushwick the next. ■ And the Hamptons summer happen ings couldn’t have been better, from the Watermill Center’s annual benefit “Stand” to a party kicking off this month’s Armory Show at the Javits Center to a toandcomeeverythingBallroombycocktailboho-meets-burlesqueanddinnerhostedtheartsorganizationMarfa.Suddenly,seemstohavebesoexuberant,colorful,freshlyenergized.Here’sSeptember!

Eleven years ago, mother-daughter design duo Suzanne and Lauren McGrath joined forces to create their Greenwich-based firm, McGrath II (“The Big Reveal,” page 92), but it always seemed meant to be. “Lauren often tagged along on my site visits when she was a child,” recalls Suzanne (on right), who studied at Parsons School of Design. “I could tell she had an amazing color sense.” Her daughter, who studied art history at Bowdoin College, adds, “We are partners, juggling challenges as they come up. Weekends are when we catch up on family stuff.”

For the Brooklyn headquarters of the brand-building company Collins (“Office Romance,” page 80), architect Nancy Thiel set out to “create a loft version of Jeannie’s bottle, mixing pop cultural references with a rigorous work environment.” After a stint as a dancer and choreographer in Princeton, New Jersey, Thiel switched gears and took an administrative position with celebrated architect Michael Graves. “I found that I had an aptitude for design, especially given my sensitivity to movement through space.”

A longtime collector of vintage jewelry— everything from Native American pieces to silver from Taxco, Mexico, and Georg Jensen— she originally intended to sell her vast holdings under the moniker Silver Per Se. But “then I realized that there was more to it than just selling jewelry,” she says. “I wanted to learn how to make it.”

“Using heat is a tricky thing,” Clayton muses.

“There’s a panache about handmade pieces, and a special type of person who is drawn to and understands their magic,” Clayton muses.

To make her jewelry, Clayton starts out by forging heavy-gauge sheets of alloyed sterling silver, a process known as annealing. The metal is heated until it is softened and pliable, after which it can be shaped with a variety of tools.

For her rings, for example, the sheet is first flattened through a metal-rolling mill, and then a bezel is soldered onto it and trimmed off. To connect the shank (also called the band) to the bezel, she uses a clamping tool to hold it in place while she solders the pieces together.

After positioning the ring into a cushioned table vise, she uses a leather mallet and a bezel rocker to push the bezel around the gemstone, then gently smooths the edge of the bezel with a “swifty” wheel on a rotary hand tool. Finally, the piece is polished in a tumbler filled with water, metal shot, and a drop of dish soap.

After a couple of years on pause, HC&G was delighted to celebrate its 10th edition of the Hamptons Innovation in Design Awards (IDAs), held on August 4 at Bridgehampton’s Topping Rose House. At the event, we recognized the best regional projects in the categories of architecture and interior, garden, small space, kitchen, and product design, selected from dozens of entries by an esteemed panel of industry experts including garden designer Frederico Azevedo, hotelier Antonella Bertello, interior designer Rayman Boozer, architect and designer Francis D’Haene, and interior designers and business partners Tatyana Miron and Alexandra Pappas. In this Amagansett house, nature appears before your eyes with the push of a button. Expansive motorized sliding doors open from the living, dining, family, and kitchen areas to the yard, gardens, and pool. The clients asked for a modern house, and the architects obliged with a dynamic series of structured volumes comprising floor-toceiling glass walls juxtaposed with handsome, solid expanses that foster privacy. “I could live here,” enthuses judge Rayman Boozer, who was struck by the house’s “Taoist blending with nature.”

Today, Napeague is still thought of as a quiet community of modest cottages nestled in the dunes, but over time, the area has grown, accommodating more homes and the traffic that comes with expansion. For a site on this beautiful stretch of the Hamptons, Bates Masi + Architects designed a structure with solid half-timber walls that face the highway and extend into side yards and over the roofline. Additionally, the firm re-sculpted the front yard upward, in response to new flood codes that require the first floor to rise eight feet above grade. “The simplicity, scale, and connection to nature are striking,” notes judge Tatyana Miron.

Workshop/APD refers to the finished interiors of this five-bedroom Sagaponack house as a “neutral wonderland.” Indeed, the all-white home exudes a sense of purity, but the overall effect is softened and warmed with a range of textures, materials, artworks, and sculptural furnishings, which are put to the test in the airy, vaulted double-height living room. Although judge Alexandra Pappas cops to being “a little intimidated by all-white interiors,” she describes this home as “inviting and serene,” whereas judge Tatyana Miron notes how the “gorgeous wood and interesting shapes pop against the neutral backdrop.”

What began as a circa-1900 barn was transformed into a thoroughly modern home for a family of six. Large floor-to-ceiling windows fill this Amagansett house with natural light, all the better to reveal the textures, patterns, and colors introduced by Farrin Cary, including a blend of custom and vintage furnishings reupholstered in family-friendly fabrics and finishes such as blue denim. Judge Frederico Azevedo points to the “exclusive use of colors in a subtle background,” while judge Francis D’Haene “loves the soft tones, warm materials, and unusual textures” that prevail.

Despite its “white, boxy spaces,” comments judge Francis D’Haene, SheltonMindel was able to infuse the interiors of this bayfront Sag Harbor house with warmth and visual interest. The firm introduced simple, yet elegant maple millwork that runs throughout the two-story residence and focused on key sculptural and colorful elements: a hovering living room fireplace, an abstract work by North Fork–based artist Ugo Rondinone, a frosted faceted-glass chandelier in the dining room. The result: “Classic, cool, modern—an ideal beach house,” concludes judge Alexandra Pappas.

Visitors approach this Water Mill estate via a long, winding driveway, revealing alternating patches of woods and light. LaGuardia Design unified the undulating five-acre site with a central allée linking the main residence with the pool house garden. Elsewhere, a fountain plays on a rectangular lawn, beds of flowering perennials soften the sharp geometries of limestone pathways, and a series of steps vault a still pool. Judge Francis D’Haene says he was taken with “the manicured, yet organic feel of the plantings,” while judge Alexandra Pappas notes the “beautiful mix of tamed and wild elements.”

The artworks, plantings, and practical sculptural elements that fill this fouracre site in Southampton appeal both to the people who occupy it and to the birds and butterflies that are encouraged to make it home. “The fact that it was designed for pollinators as well as people is the icing on the cake,” says judge Antonella Bertello. This 600-square-foot pool pavilion “says look at me,” exclaims judge Rayman Boozer, but it’s simultaneously a structure that “disappears into the landscape,” adds judge Tatyana Miron. The architects aimed to create a building that stands out on the property while not interfering with views of the pool and the bay. From the main house, the pavilion appears as a solid presence, yet remains transparent enough to keep water views in sight. A sweeping roofline reduces solar heat and works to cover an outdoor seating area. The effect of the building is “airy and free,” says judge Antonella Bertello.

A 40-foot-long wooden arbor serves as a resort-style retreat from the main residence. Sited on a sloping field, the pavilion nonetheless captures elevated views of a freshwater pond and a swimming pool with a vanishing edge. Tropical mahogany and ipé woods were chosen for cladding and flooring, since both can weather extreme climate conditions in the Hamptons. The designers also incorporated multiple seating areas, providing room for contemplation in what judge Francis D’Haene calls a “beautiful outdoor space perfectly oriented and placed within the landscape.”

What was once solely a garage and mechanical room is now a vaulted, even sculptural, pool house and small residence. The doubleheight space and multifaceted ceiling in the bedroom create “a serene escape,” says judge Alexandra Pappas, adding that the “dramatic volume and great windows maximize the pool views.” The designers made a deliberate effort to incorporate furnishings comprising Bauhaus-style building blocks, inside and out, which blur the distinction between the exterior and interior, not to mention what is sculpture and what is furniture.

Beauty and function define this Water Mill kitchen, intended not only for serious cooking, but also for dedicated entertaining. Ciuffo Cabinetry designed an expansive T-shaped marble island that doubles as prep counter and party central. Two-tone cabinetry accented with polished stainless-steel framing, a custom hood that resembles a work of sculpture, and a waterfall-style island make “the space endless,” says judge Frederico Azevedo.

Judge Rayman Boozer characterizes this Amagansett kitchen as “fun, bright, and optimistic.” Indeed, the generous windows and cathedral ceiling infuse the space with Hamptons light, while the Bardiglio stone on the eight-by-10-foot island continues onto the backsplash for a lovely, unifying effect. The intentional use of natural materials is a way to bring the outdoors inside, making this space “feel like the center of the house” for the family of six that lives here, says judge Francis D’Haene.

This Amagansett house comes with a pedigree, having been designed and lived in by the late architect Charles Gwathmey. The directive for the kitchen refresh was to preserve Gwathmey’s original vision while giving the space a modern update. The new palette features the same stained cedar and hickory wood, while introducing cutting-edge materials that didn’t exist when the house was built. he 1960s ranch house, on a generous acre with distant views of Scallop Pond Preserve in North Sea, was apparently abandoned, save for a couple of gravestones tucked into the property. Eyeing an opportunity, Saunders & Associates broker Lylla Carter purchased the place for herself as a teardown and enlisted architect Cass Calder Smith, a friend and trusted collaborator, for a full set of new house plans. Smith came up with a bold 2,500-square-foot villa that took its style cues from modern architectural tropes typical of the West Coast, where he had spent his formative years. His proposal fea tured a flat roof and white stucco walls, with gray cedar accents. “I don’t really create controversial buildings,” says Smith, who cites legendary Southern California modernist Richard Neutra as an important influence. Nevertheless, this would be a memorable, iconic house, very visible from the road. Turns out it was not to be. Carter never razed the ranch or even broke ground for the structure. Instead, she sold the lot in 2018 to

immunologist Fairley Pilaro—and graciously threw in the unreal ized plans. The new owner, a single mother of four who has lived on Long Island for a dozen years, was delighted, having already toured several Smith houses with her boyfriend, Joe Messina, a builder with Joseph Scott Consulting. Half of the front porch had collapsed and “nothing was salvageable,” Pilaro recounts, although she was pleased that she got “a lot more bang” for her real estate buck. But after closely studying Smith’s scale model, a miniature in cardboard and strips of wood, Pilaro and Messina decided that the layout was too small for their blended family, which often increases in size when relatives arrive for extended beach stays.

“We have an open-door policy and are kind of full service when anyone comes here,” Pilaro says. “I’m a home girl.” Smith went back to the drawing board. “I’m not the type who considers my houses trophies, and I don’t have any ego about it,” the architect says. What had been a boomerang-shaped foot print grew into more of a U. The front retained its relationship to the road, and views through the rear windows are still ori ented to a spectacular specimen oak—now spotlit as a backyard focal point. (“I hate cutting down trees,” Smith admits.) The total square footage ballooned to 8,585 square feet, including an enormous earth-sheltered lower level, six bedrooms, and a primary suite above the garage, which can be completely com partmentalized and sealed off for extra privacy or even seasonal renters. “I’m a down-to-earth person,” Pilaro jokes, but “nobody else needs to sleep in my bed!” Following six months of design adjustments and approvals, Messina finally began building the couple’s dream house. One

Smith signed off on the inventive banquette that Messina inserted into what had been drawn, originally, as an enormous kitchen island. Pilaro and Messina also added a koi pond and chose earth tones and neutrals for painted interior walls, while interior paneling recalls the cedar outside. They finished decorat ing and moved in just as COVID-19 was at its height. Still, the pandemic didn’t put a damper on the couple’s socially distanced housewarming party, complete with live band. But the hostess, ever the immunologist, put the kibosh on the chips and dip.

of Pilaro’s sons even apprenticed for his summer job—despite having no construction experience. He proved handy for “things older guys don’t want to do,” Messina recalls, particularly riding the crane piggyback and helping to position large, unwieldy windows throughout the house. Cleverly, he also found space for a laundry chute. (His reward for the summer stint: a nail gun of his very own.)

Suzanne and Lauren McGrath happen to be the mother-daughter team who run McGrath II, the design firm the Verrochis hired on the advice of friends. Straightaway, they announced that they had some news for their new clients. Nothing dire, but still not the kind of information anyone would want to share with people who were moving across the country to live in a house they had never stepped foot in before. Upon walking through the home’s graciously scaled rooms, the McGraths realized that it “had become dated over time,” Suzanne recounts. “But we knew that this was an exceptional

mong the consider able fallout from the pandemic vis-à-vis the real estate world was the deeper meaning of the phrase “caveat emptor.” Buyer beware—never more so than when purchasing real estate sight unseen. Yet that was a familiar practice in the frenetic early months of COVID-19, when homeowners desperate to get out of cities and otherwise tight spaces snapped up properties simply by viewing them online, or even after just hearing about them over the phone. The competition was that intense.

Jessica Verrochi was among that group of risk-takers. “It was the middle of the pandemic, our kids were in school, and we needed to relocate to the East Coast from San Francisco,” she recalls of the lightning-fast run-up to the purchase of her 1920s neo-Colonial in Rye. “The market was moving quickly, and we found ourselves in a bidding war. But even from afar, my husband and I knew that Suzanne and Lauren would be able to take care of everything.”

“The call we got wasn’t one of those ‘Are you sitting down?’ ones,” Verrochi remembers. “After all, we liked the bones of the house, its layout, and location. But Lauren and Suzanne very diplomatically told us that many of the floors had been torn apart by the prior owners’ dogs, the stair case banister was falling down, and the fireplaces needed to be replaced.” With plenty of work needing to be done, the Verrochis decamped with their young children, leaving behind their stucco house in Presidio Heights and the majority of its furnishings. Fortunately, Jessica Verrochi and the design team found common ground in a passion for antiques. “She really appreciates beautiful American and European antiques,” Lauren McGrath

“I learned quickly that antiques stand out most in a house,” says Verrochi. “I didn’t have a ton of experience shopping for them, but given supply-chain delays and the fact that people want to make their homes feel bespoke and one-of-a-kind, they’ve become popular again.” Among the few items the couple did bring with them from the West Coast was a collection of copper cookpots once used by husband Matt’s mother. “After gutting the kitchen, we started the re-do with those pots in mind,” says Lauren. But the prevailing design scheme for the house hinges on the custom floor covering in the liv ing room, its graphic pattern replicating a classic American hooked rug and inspiring “the patterns and colors found in all the rooms.”

So, on a Friday night, Verrochi and her husband got the green light and went over. “When we walked through the door, music was playing, and glasses of wine were waiting for us,” Verrochi says. “Very slowly, we went room by room through our new home, taking it all in. It was the perfect big reveal.” ✹

As the work was being done, Verrochi and her family were living in a nearby rental house, although she couldn’t resist stopping by daily to see the progress. But as the “big reveal” neared, the McGraths diplomatically asked her to stay away for four days. “We always make sure we aren’t present for that initial moment when everything’s finally in place,” Suzanne says. “It’s a private moment, an emotional one. The clients deserve privacy.”

Stairway To Heaven

Barsanti, who acknowledges that his clients gave him a lot of leeway, thought that the house might feel more special if it differed significantly from their primary home in Westchester County, which is traditional in style and quite colorful. The designer and his team—including colleague

hen previous clients of designers Daniel Barsanti and his wife, Rena Levine, bought a house in the Hamptons, it seemed natural for them to engage Barsanti’s firm, Barsanti Desmone, to turn the place into a family getaway.

The traditional 4,100-square-foot house, which was built in 2000 on a .61acre lot, lies in the Redwood section of Sag Harbor, a low-key enclave on a neck of land that’s attached to the historic village by a narrow causeway.

The house, inside and out, was a throwback to earlier decades, but the new owners loved the flow of it, including a primary bedroom on the main floor and big upstairs rooms for their three kids, aged 14 to 20. Additionally, the five-bedroom home faces west, has a great view of sunsets over the water, and welcomes light all day long. The light was key for Barsanti. “My first step in any project is to visit the site to see how a house attracts light, reflects light, plays with light,” he says, “and that is especially true near the water, where the light is indescribably beautiful. In this project, light informed every decision we made, right down to furniture placement.”

“Every decision we made was about how the space would be used,” the decorator says. The homeowners work in the financial sector and like to entertain, so they requested a substantial dining option, but “we bought two tables that could be separated, so if you were on your own you wouldn’t feel isolated at a long table.” And then there was the light: A huge round mirror in the primary bedroom, which is discreetly tucked into the home’s eastern elevation, reflects water views from the custom bed.

“The goal of this project was not to turn the house into a design object, although we wanted it to be attractive and a bit sexy. The goal was to create a place for joyful family gatherings, a place where the kids and parents would be happy spending time together, and that remained the same from day one. Everything we did was an attempt to reach that goal.” ✹

“We didn’t want anything that was only ‘of the moment,’” he says, “and we didn’t want traditional overtones, either. We wanted it clean and simple, easy to main tain, and something with lasting visual value.” To that end, most of the pieces are unusual, refined, or custom-designed. Still, Barsanti doesn’t shy away from stretching the budget with artful applications of high and low. One bedroom, for example, has a plush James Perse throw at the foot of the bed, whereas the wall-mounted headboard is covered in an Ikea carpet.

Barsanti upended laid-back beach house stereotypes with sophisticated fur nishings throughout, far more modern than the home’s exterior would suggest.

Let the tomatoes cool on the sheet pan. The juices will thicken and the tomatoes will be easier to handle when they’reOncecool.cooled, layer tomatoes with wax or parchment paper in a lidded container. Place in the refrigerator until cold, then freeze for later use. —Susan Spungen

• For a quick pasta sauce, sauté chopped roasted tomatoes. Top with a dollop of ricotta and a handful of chopped basil.

As the moisture is slowly cooked out of the tomatoes, the flavors concentrate and the fruit is coaxed into jammy perfection. If the skins of the tomatoes are thin, you can eat them or easily slip them off once they’re cooked.

Brush them with the oil, taking care to distribute the garlic evenly, and sprinkle the thyme leaves on top.

• Toss chopped roasted tomatoes with cubed grilled or toasted sourdough and cucumbers for a twist on panzanella.

3 large garlic cloves, peeled and grated on a Microplane 3 T olive oil 14 to 16 plum tomatoes, halved lengthwise 1 tsp. kosher salt Freshly ground pepper 1 T fresh thyme leaves 1 T Aleppo-style pepper (optional)

Place on the center rack of the oven and bake until the tomatoes are shriveled but still a bit juicy, and juices on the parchment start to darken. (This can take anywhere from 1½ to 2½ hours, depending on the size of the tomato halves.) To make a spicy version, sprinkle the Aleppo-style pepper on the tomatoes after the first hour of cooking.
