WHILE EDITING THE “FANTASY KITCHENS & BATHS” CHAPTER OF THIS YEAR’S Hamptons Design Guide, I think I laughed out loud when I read designer Roric Tobin’s hot take that subway tile can “look like a cheap subdivision,” while “bold, trendy tile looks like a spec house based on HGTV.” Then in his response, decorator Scott Sanders says he is a “huge fan” of subway tile for a traditional look. (Flip to page 92 to see how Sanders recommends making them more interesting.)

Similarly, I was surprised by our designers’ “Tips for a Classic Hamptons Look/Style” in Chapter 5 “Ready, Set, Decorate!” (page 132). Spoiler alert, there’s no slipcovered sofa plus sisal rug plus hydrangea blue equals East End–chic formula. Inside and out, this diverse community is embracing an array of home styles and landscapes. For example, our panel of landscape architects is shying away from perfectly manicured gardens and rolling lawns in favor of native plants and natural meadows.

So, if you had an idea of what your Hamptons home should be, you might be surprised that our guide is not a compendium of hard-and-fast rules. Rather, it’s a conversation of (often differing) opinions from the East End’s most influential design professionals. Like browsing the boutiques of East Hampton and selecting your favorite home accessories (we can help you there, too, on page 154), you must follow the advice that resonates with your tastes and family’s specific needs. Interior designer Philip Gorrivan perhaps said it best: “The beauty of the Hamptons is that there’s not just one look. Each home is very personal.” Welcome to the conversation.
